Stephen Nover's Bowl Game of the Year

NC State vs Arizona State

NC State - 6.5 (-110)

North Carolina State is a superior team to Arizona State. Now throw in the Sun Devils coaching upheaval and I see North Carolina State winning this game by more than a touchdown. The Wolfpack were in national playoff contention, but couldn't beat Notre Dame and Clemson. No shame in that. The Wolfpack aren't in that elite class. But they are a level higher than Arizona State. North Carolina State has bowl experience winning bowl games in two of the past three seasons. The Wolfpack field one of the most experienced teams in the country with 22 seniors. These seniors have accomplished going to a bowl three straight seasons so they want to end their college careers on a high note. Ryan Finley threw for more than 3,000 yards for North Carolina State this season while completing nearly 64 percent of his passes. He has a deep group of receivers, who can take advantage of Arizona State's 118th pass defense. The Sun Devils ranked 88th in scoring defense allowing 31.2 points per game. North Carolina State's defense is much stronger giving up fewer than 25 points per game and ranking 28th in run defense. The Wolfpack have a stout defensive line and ASU allowed the 10th-most sacks in the country. The kicker here is Arizona State's coaching situation. The Sun Devils fired Todd Graham and hired Herm Edwards, which was a bizarre hire in my opinion. The Sun Devils' offensive coordinator, Billy Napier, and defensive coordinator, Phil Bennett, then left the program. Napier departed to accept the head coaching job at Louisiana-Lafayette and Bennett left for personal reasons. So newcomer Edwards doesn't have either of his coordinators.

Analysis:
Not betting this one with my heart as I‚ have been an SC fan for 45 plus years. I thought Ohio State and USC were overrated from the get go and I was right. I still think Penn State was the best team in the Big Ten this year. Meanwhile the Trojans had several significant injuries especially on the offensive line and that accounted for a lot of forced and hurried throws from QB Sam Darnold.
The Running Backs are healthy now and Ronald Jones and Stephen Carr are as solid a tandem as there is in the country. WR Burnette leads a deep receiving corp that has grown up over the season with several key pass catchers missing time throughout the year.
The Defense led by signal caller MLB Cam Smith is steady. Not great but still physical. Nwosu is one of those freakish athletes that will get after JT Barrett. Although Barrett played his best quarter of football in the 4th quarter at home vs. Penn State in the 39-38 Buckeye win, I still think he is very inconsistent and will be under duress all game from SC. For OSU RB Dobbins is a special talent and receivers Campbell, Hill, McLaurin, Dixon & Victor make up a solid quintet for JT to throw to, yet they still have struggled time and again against quality competition.
Nick Bosa will provide a steady pass rush on Darnold but Sam will rely on flare passes and runs away from Bosa to open things up for downfield big plays to Burnette, Mitchell, Vaughns, Pittman & tight end Petite. I think the Trojans win the game. Buckeyes thought they were going to the play-off after win over Wiscinsin in Big Ten Title Game...SC knew they weren't getting in but will look to show why there should be at least an 8 game play-off! - NOTE- Still a chance Porter Gustin could play for Southern Cal on the Defensive Line and that would be a Big Welcome back to one of their best defensive assets!

Texas A&M next year will have Jimbo Fisher as their new head coach but too bad they won't have him on the sideline in Bank of America Stadium Friday afternoon. Both teams come into this bowl game with a 7-5 record and I hoping we will see the same Wake Forest team that beat NC State because if we do I see the Demon Deacons taking this Belk Bowl. Demon Deacons QB John Wolford will spread the ball around Friday afternoon and with the coaching change the Aggies had before this game I see Wake Forest pulling this game out in the second half. Wake Forest is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 bowl games and the Demon Deacons are 8-2 ATS against a team with a winning record. The A&M Aggies are 3-8 ATS their last 11 bowl games and 5-16 folowing a SU loss.

2 Unit Play. Take #249 Over 59.5 NC State vs Arizona St (3:00p.m., Friday December 29 CBS - Sun Bowl)

Friday late afternoon if we see the same Arizona St Sun Devils team that finished the season with a 42-30 win over Arizona and 40-24 win over Oregon St then Friday we should have no problem hitting this over play. NC State last three road games their defense gave up 30 points to Wake Forest and 35 to Notre Dame and I see the Wolfpack giving up some points to the Sun Devils. NC State is 5-0 O/U in their last 5 bowl games and the ASU Sun Devils are 5-1 O/U in their last 6 bowl games.

3 Unit Play. Take #252 Northwestern -7.5 over Kentucky (4:30p.m., Friday December 29 ESPN - Music City Bowl)

Two teams that ended the season totally opposite as the Kentucky Wildcats dropped 3 out of their last 4 games and their last 2 games their offense was M.I.A. The Wildcats of Northwestern comes to Nashville riding a 7-game win streak and the Wildcats ended the season going 9-3 ATS. Give me the Big 10 in this matchup as I see the Wildcats grabbing another bowl victory. Kentucky is 1-7 ATS in their last 8 games and the Northwestern Wildcats are 16-5 ATS in their last 21 games.

4 Unit Play. Take #254 New Mexico St +4.5 over Utah St (5:30p.m., Friday December 29 CBSC - Arizona Bowl)

The Arizona Bowl will have a pair of 6-6 teams but Friday night I see the New Mexico St Aggies coming out on top in Tucson, Arizona. Utah St barely made bowl eligible but they got to big cupcake games against Idaho St and San Jose St and yes I know the Utah St ended the season with some W's but overall I New Mexico St being the better team. New Mexico St hasn't been to a bowl game since 1960 and NMSU are pumped for this game and getting plus points in Tucson I see NMSU winning big. New Mexico St is 6-0-1 ATS against non-conference games and the Utah St Aggies are 2-9 ATS against Sun Belt conference teams.

3 Unit Play. Take #255 USC +7.5 over Ohio St (8:30p.m., Friday December 29 ESPN - Cotton Bowl)

A Rose Bowl matchup being played in the Cotton Bowl at AT&T Stadium Friday night. This game will be won by either QB and I know USC QB Sam Darnold struggled in the beginning of the season but he played well at the end of the season. Both teams come into this game riding winning streaks but I see USC keeping this game close for 4 quarters and whoever wins this game will only win by a field goal. It would not shock me to see USC quarterback Darnold have a big game like Baker Mayfield did against Ohio St. Ohio St is 0-4 ATS in their last 4 non-conference games and again I see this game being close for all four quarters.

When I cap this game I see to huge advantages to the over...
OSU has not seen a pure passer like DARNOLD since MAYFIELD and he carved them up. Darnold might even be a better pure passer here too..
With that...OSU comes in with an excellent rushing attack which I dont see USC seeing since ND in a game THEY GOT CARVED UP
I sit on these two advantages for the OVER ALONE. They are that HUGE !!! Whoever wins, I see the winner in the 40s....

1-Unit Play. Take #825 West Virginia (-2.5) over Oklahoma State (7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 29)
There's a reason that WVU is favored in this game. Oklahoma State wants to run. But the Mountaineers have been running - and defending - a lot longer than the Cowboys. West Virginia is not at all rattled about playing on the road in league play and their two senior stars, Jevon Carter and Daxter Miles, will set the tempo. Oklahoma State is off to a nice start thanks to an easy schedule. But they are not as tough as West Virginia. And I'll back the tougher team here.

1-Unit Play. #828 Take Appalachian State (-3.5) over Texas State (7:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 29)

2-Unit Play. Take #829 UT-Arlington (-4) over Coastal Carolina (7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 29)
This Coastal Carolina team isn't bad. They are better than their record suggests and they have near misses against South Carolina, Wake Forest and Charleston. However, as good as they are they aren't as good as Arlington. The Mavericks have the two best players on the floor in Erick Neal and Kevin Hervey. They don't have the size to match the Mavs and Arlington has already tested itself with road games at Alabama, Creighton and Northern Iowa. I'm noticing an early conference season trend. So I will keep backing the better team.

2-Unit Play. Take #837 UL-Lafayette (-10.5) over UA-Little Rock (8 p.m., Friday, Dec. 29)
Lafayette can score in a range that Little Rock can't. The Cajuns are coming off a blowout loss that was their worst showing of the season. I expect them to bounce back and to be completely motivated for this game. Lafayette beat Iowa and they have wrecked all the teams rated 250 or lower that they've played. Arkansas-Little Rock is in a major tailspin. They haven't won a game against a D-I team since Thanksgiving and they have gotten floored by any of the better team they've faced. These guys are awful. They can't shoot, they can't score, and if they are hoping that defense will save them in this game they are mistaken.

1-Unit Play. #841 Take Georgia Southern (Pk) over Troy (8 p.m., Friday, Dec. 29)

7-Unit Play. Take #845 Kansas State (-1) over Iowa State (9 p.m., Friday, Dec. 29)
I can't believe where this number opened. I thought that the Wildcats would be small favorites in this game. Instead they opened as small underdogs. That's muscle memory. That line was out of deference to how good Iowa State has been and how good they've been at home for the rest of this decade. But this isn't the same Iowa State team. But the market has corrected itself and this is exactly where I thought this number would come out at. And, in fact, it has because these guys aren't any good at all. It is great that they have won nine games in a row. But this team has faced a feeble schedule and their best wins have come against Iowa and Boise State. Hardly a murderer's row. Kansas State hasn't played anyone either. But I've seen enough of this team to know that they are just flat-out better than Iowa State. Kansas State has better guards - and guard play is what Iowa State hangs its hat on - and the Wildcats are much bigger and stronger in the post. It is going to be a long conference season for Iowa State. And I don't think they will get off to a good start. The wrong team is favored in this one and Kansas State will find a way to grind out a six-point win here.

2-Unit Play. Take #851 Washington (+11) over USC (10:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 29)
I have been all over USC to start this season. But even I think that this is too many points for them. They've flexed against mid-major teams but the Trojans have not been good at all against teams from major conferences, losing three of their four games against them this year. Washington is vastly improved and this team was good enough to win in Phog Allen this year. The Huskies have enough talent to at least put up a fight in this game. And with this spread that's all they need to do.

2-Unit Play. Take #853 Washington State (+14) over UCLA (11 p.m., Friday, Dec. 29)
You never know what you are going to get from Washington State. This is a team that beat St. Mary's and San Diego State but lost to UC-Davis and UTEP. Ernie Kent's team is all over the map. But what the hell has UCLA done this year to justify being such a big favorite? I think the Bruins stink. And they are coming off a win over Kentucky so they are poised for a letdown. I just think that this is too many points to lay out against a team that the Bruins are completely unfamiliar with and that they don't have a massive athleticism advantage over. Washington State can lose by nine and everyone can walk away happy.

North Dakota was one of the biggest overachievers in college basketball last year. They are coming back to earth this season though and haven't beaten a D-I team since Nov. 14. These guys aren't playing well on either end of the floor and I think that they will get lit up here. Idaho is one of the most experienced teams in the country. And they haven't lost to a team rated No. 200 or lower this year. Idaho went on the road and demolished a decent Western Michigan team by 30. I think they can do the same here. Idaho has revenge for losing to North Dakota in the Big Sky Tournament last year and they were blown out by 23 in their last trip up here. Idaho is going to be extremely focused for this game. They are bigger, better, more experienced and more motivated. They should get this win.

The Warriors can name their score here. The question is can they name it by a wide enough margin to cover this double-digit spread? I believe they can. They certainly did when the two teams met on Dec. 6 in Charlotte. The Warriors rolled past the Hornets, 101-87. Golden State achieved that win minus Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. Curry won't be back for this game. But Green is healthy and Golden State is home this time. The Warriors are 9-1 in the 10 games Curry has missed. They've held six of their last 10 foes to fewer than 100 points. The Hornets are a below average defensive club that may not even be good enough to sneak into the Eastern Conference playoffs. They have lost 13 of their last 17 games. Golden State leads the NBA in scoring and field goal percentage. Since losing to the Warriors, the Hornets have faced three other strong teams - Boston, Toronto and Houston. Charlotte dropped all three of those games by double-digits with the average loss being 13.6 points. Charlotte has been terrible on the road going 2-12 SU, 3-8-3 ATS. The Warriors host Memphis on Saturday, but after that game won't play again until Wednesday. So they should be playing hard.
I'm not anticipating Chris Paul to play, but if he does I still like this game to go Under. Paul would be rusty having missed the last three games. He likely wouldn't play big minutes either. The spot sets up for a hard-nose, defensive battle with both teams coming off losses. The Rockets blew a huge lead in losing 99-98 at Boston last night. Houston's four best players all logged more than 38 minutes in that game. The Under has cashed six of the last seven times the Rockets have played without rest. No Paul obviously would be good for the Under, too. Houston has another key injury. Center Clint Capela is out. He leads the NBA in field goal percentage. The Rockets lack an inside game minus Capela. I see reduced minutes for James Harden, Ryan Anderson, Eric Gordon and Trevor Ariza tonight with newly-signed veteran swingman Gerald Green picking up more minutes. Green made his Rockets debut last night going scoreless in 11 minutes. He's a big offensive downgrade from any of those four players. The Wizards still are mad from an embarrassing 113-99 road loss to the Hawks two nights ago. The Wizards weren't happy with their defense nor their lack of ball movement. I see the Wizards tightening their defense while also taking their time on offense to get the best shot rather than play up-tempo. The Under has cashed 13 of the last 17 times the Wizards have played on one day's rest. Washington is an underrated defensive club at home. The Wizards have yielded just 97.3 points per game during their last six games at Verizon Center.

You have a Wake Forrest team that did not like how they finished against Duke giving up 31 points and falling short but this is a team that had beat the likes of top 25 NC State 30-24, dropped 64 on Syracuse, went toe to toe against Notre Dame and played both Clemson and FSU close. Let's roll with Wake to get it done over Texas A&M who without Sumlin is like getting a gut punch and simply will not get up for the SEC Team.

Ohio State will get up to face USC in a big way as this team will absolutely relish the opportunity to face the Trojans and they have a lot to prove to the Committee in particular for next year. This is a USC team that has struggled against elite defenses and this is a Ohio State that is prepped by Urban Meyer who is as good as it comes when it comes to Bowl Games and he has a lot to prove to himself and his fan base in regards to the Bowl game after falling short the previous year. Let's roll with Ohio State in this quality public fade.

If Baylor loses by 13 to the likes of 13 to Xavier a top 15 team on the road, they are going to have all sorts of issues with a top 10 power ranking team in Texas Tech who is hungry for national recognition. Chicago is now 9-2 straight up and 10-1 ATS since Nikola Mirotic was activated and I’ve been on the Bulls many times during that run. The line value is starting to erode a bit but there is still enough value to play them tonight. My ratings favor Chicago by 4 ½ points with Victor Oladipo out for the Pacers and I’ll take Chicago in a 1-Star Best Bet at -2 or less.

**L.A. Clippers (-2 ½) over L.A. LAKERS

The Clippers are 6-4 straight up and 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games and as I’ve mentioned before, they are a better team now than their season rating even without Blake Griffin (a zero to negative impact player over his career), Patrick Beverley, and Danilo Gallinari. The Lakers a 1.7 points worse without Lonzo Ball and Brook Lopez (he’s valuable), who is best among the starters in plus-minus per 48 minutes. Ball is actually an overall positive influence on the team too based on my analysis and my player-specific ratings favor the Clippers by 5 ½ points in this game. I’ll take the Clippers in a 2-Star Best Bet at -3 points or less.
