Mahoning Valley Race Course - Race #5 - Post: 2:36pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $14,100 Class Rating: 86

Rating: 4

#6 GOODZAPPER (ML=9/2)
#3 AMERICAN SPARROW (ML=5/1)

GOODZAPPER - Have to like the way Bernardini has raced this gelding back into shape off the layoff. Horse is well spotted in this sprint and I think he'll run well today. AMERICAN SPARROW - Have to give this gelding a fair chance. Ran a nice outing last out within the last 30 days. Rodriguez was aboard this gelding last out and was impressed enough to take the animal right back. This gelding is rounding his way back into shape. Should compete well today.

Vulnerable Contenders: #9 INCREDIBLE DEE (ML=7/2), #1 ATHLETIC TEMPER (ML=4/1), #10 E Z MOON (ML=8/1),

INCREDIBLE DEE - Hasn't raced or had any works since December 8th. Not much value on this favorite. Tough to back any less than sharp equine in a short distance affair if he hasn't finished in the money in a sprint in the last couple months. ATHLETIC TEMPER - Last ran on December 12th at Mahoning Valley Race Cour, finishing fourth. Unlikely to move up off of that try in today's event. E Z MOON - Common fig in the last race at Mahoning Valley Race Cour at 6 furlongs. Don't believe this racer will improve too much in today's race. The bang up job last out may knock this gelding off stride this time out.

Parx Racing - Race #9 - Post: 4:01pm - Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $19,000 Class Rating: 88

Rating: 3

#3 SCARLY CHARLY (ML=4/1)
#4 PRODIGIOUS (ML=6/1)

SCARLY CHARLY - Ran last out against a higher rated class of horses at Parx Racing. The move down in class should suit him well. This gelding is at the top in EPS (earnings per start). Check out this one in the saddling enclosure. Handicapping information show this pony with three improving speed figures. Sanchez should be on a horse ready to go today. PRODIGIOUS - The rider and trainer combination have a beneficial ROI when they combine forces. This gelding is in good form. Ended up third on December 9th. Gelding is a few starts into a return here. Should give a big race today.

Vulnerable Contenders: #10 DOMINIC'S SMILE (ML=5/2), #9 GITIDONE (ML=8/1),

DOMINIC'S SMILE - In the last event this less than sharp equine finished eighth. Doesn't bode well for his chances this time out. GITIDONE - All sorts of crazy early zip on board for this race. No chance for this speedball. This mount ran a disappointing rating last out. He shouldn't run better and will probably get beat in today's race running that figure.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - SCARLY CHARLY - Having the best speed fig last race of 89 at Parx Racing on Nov 28th. This gelding has an excellent chance to win here.

# 7 EKATI WILDCAT 5/2

# 9 OFFICER GRIGGS 6/1

# 8 WINE N DIVINE 5/1

EKATI WILDCAT looks to be the bet in here. Should best this group here, showing very strong numbers of late. Recorded a very good Equibase Speed Fig last time out. With a nice class rating average of 89, has one of the most respectable class advantages in this group of horses. OFFICER GRIGGS - Has strong front-end speed and will probably fare solidly versus this group. Ran a strong last race. WINE N DIVINE - When this jockey and trainer team up, bettors often make money. Green has one of the top winning percentages in this group of horses with entries running at this distance and surface.

Heat vs. Raptors Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/09/2018

DeMar DeRozan has been lava-hot during Toronto's five-game winning streak and he looks to continue his torrid play when the Raptors visit the Miami Heat on Tuesday. DeRozan is averaging 33.4 points during the stretch, including a career-best 52-point outing against the Milwaukee Bucks on Jan. 1.

DeRozan was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week on Monday for the third time this season and he followed up the honor by scoring 35 points, including the go-ahead three-point play, as Toronto posted a 114-113 overtime victory over the Brooklyn Nets. DeRozan's scoring exploits have helped the Raptors average 121.8 points during their winning streak, including outputs of 131, 129 and 124. Miami arrives with a four-game winning streak as it begins a stretch in which seven of eight games are on the road. Point guard Goran Dragic is averaging 21 points and 8.3 assists during the four-game winning streak and has team-leading season averages of 16.7 points and 4.8 assists.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FS Sun (Miami), TSN (Toronto)

ABOUT THE HEAT (22-17): Forward Josh Richardson is developing nicely in his third NBA season by averaging 12.8 points - including 17.2 over the last 20 games - while displaying signs he is just scratching his potential. The 24-year-old has scored in double digits in a career-best 14 consecutive games and coach Erik Spoelstra told reporters that he is "ready for the next jump" while Richardson tries to maintain his perspective. "It's an NBA season," Richardson told reporters. "It never goes like you want it to go. I try not to get down on myself after the preseason, I try not to get too high, start feeling myself during the preseason, I just try to stay kind of even and I think that's been great for me."

ABOUT THE RAPTORS (28-10): Point guard Kyle Lowry suffered an acute back spasm after suffering a scary fall during the overtime and his status will be updated after he is re-evaluated Tuesday after he was reportedly seen leaving the arena Monday in a wheelchair. Lowry, who had 18 points and 11 assists, was competing for a rebound when he fell and landed hard on his lower back and buttocks and then was dealing with excruciating pain while on the floor before being taken for X-rays. "We rely on Kyle for everything he does for us, to be the general out there on the court," DeRozan said after the win. "And it's tough when he's not out there but we got to figure it out."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Heat have dropped a franchise-worst five straight games in Toronto.

2. Toronto swingman CJ Miles is 6-of-22 shooting over the last three games.

3. Miami C Kelly Olynyk has three double-doubles over the past six games after having one prior to the stretch.

PREDICTION: Raptors 115, Heat 110

Trail Blazers vs. Thunder Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/09/2018

Dealing with Russell Westbrook is hard enough and can only get worse if your top player is out of the lineup. The Portland Trail Blazers hope to have star point guard Damian Lillard back on the floor when then they visit Westbrook and the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday.

Lillard sat out Sunday's 111-110 victory over the San Antonio Spurs due to right calf and hamstring injuries and he has missed six of the past eight games. "We've got a big stretch of games coming up and having a little bit of a situation with my hamstring, it takes time, and then, aggravating my calf, and having both be on the same side, (the team training staff) just told me that it would probably be smarter to take it easy," Lillard told reporters about sitting out before a four-game road trip begins in Oklahoma City. The Trail Blazers have won six of their past eight meetings with the Thunder, who were drilled 114-100 by the Phoenix Suns on Sunday. Westbrook had 26 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds in the defeat for his 14th triple-double of the season.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBATV, NCSN Northwest, FS Oklahoma

ABOUT THE TRAIL BLAZERS (21-18): Shooting guard CJ McCollum once again took over the starring role with Lillard out and he scored the game-winning basket with a floater in the lane with 5.9 seconds left -- a shot that bounced on the rim seven times before dropping in. "It didn't want to go in. I think that's karma for all the in-and-outs I've missed all year so I was due for one," McCollum said after his 25-point outing. "I got a good look, so I can live with that even if it rolls out. That's the shot I practice over and over again." Portland has won five of its last seven games despite Lillard sitting out four of the victories but backup Shabazz Napier has stepped up to average 14.3 points over the past 10 games and he contributed 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting against the Spurs.

ABOUT THE THUNDER (22-18): Oklahoma City has lost three of its past five games and looked a step slow most of Sunday night while falling to the youthful Suns. "We just didn't play up to the level that we needed to," forward Paul George told reporters afterward. "It's a young team that played hard. They beat us in physicality. They were just aggressive, a young team playing aggressive on their floor. They got hot and it resulted in a loss for us." George struggled to 19 points on 5-of-14 shooting to halt a personal stretch in which he scored 24 or more in each of his past six games.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Lillard recorded 36 points and 13 assists as the Trail Blazers posted a 103-99 home win over the Thunder on Nov. 5.

2. Oklahoma City C Steven Adams scored 18 points on 9-of-11 shooting against Phoenix for his fourth straight game in double digits.

3. Portland C Jusuf Nurkic had 17 points and 13 rebounds against the Spurs for his ninth double-double of the season.

PREDICTION: Thunder 118, Trail Blazers 114

Magic vs. Mavericks Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/09/2018

The Dallas Mavericks aim to defeat Orlando for the 10th time in the past 12 meetings when they host the Magic on Tuesday. Both teams enter with losing streaks as Dallas has lost its past three games while Orlando has dropped four in a row and 13 of its last 14.

The Magic have lost by double digits in seven of their past 14 games and only a 40-point, fourth-quarter uprising kept them from another one on Saturday when they fell 131-127 to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Orlando trailed by 20 entering the final period and players pointed to how the team kept fighting as a positive in terms of moving forward. Dallas won a season-best four straight games before the current slide that reached three with Sunday's 100-96 home loss to the New York Knicks. "It's really the same old story. It's an early hole, it's a late rally, and then coming up short," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle told reporters afterward. "The bottom line is we've got to be better early in games."

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, FS Florida (Orlando), FS Southwest (Dallas)

ABOUT THE MAGIC (12-28): Forward Aaron Gordon scored 24 of his 30 points in the second half against Cleveland to reach at least 30 for the second time in four games and raise his average to 19.2. Coach Frank Vogel has seen a steady rise in consistency from the 22-year-old, who carried the Magic on his back in the fourth quarter against the Cavaliers. "I liked the fight that we played with, but we've got to play with that the whole game for us to compete and make a push," Gordon told reporters afterward. "My teammates put their trust in me, but we're all just trying to make the right play."

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (13-28): Dallas has lost by a total of 10 points over the past three games on the heels of the four-game winning streak. The defensive effort was a huge issue in two of the losses - allowing 127 points to Chicago and 125 to Golden State - and rookie point guard Dennis Smith Jr. fingered a reason that will certainly upset Carlisle. "We might have gotten a little too relaxed with our winning streak," Smith told reporters. "We're not coming out with enough intensity on both ends of the court."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Magic have dropped their past five visits to Dallas.

2. Dallas SF Harrison Barnes scored 25 points in the loss to the Knicks and is averaging 22.5 over the past four games.

3. Orlando PG Elfrid Payton scored 20 points against Cleveland for his third-highest output of the season.

Kings vs. Lakers Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/09/2018

The Los Angeles Lakers halted a nine-game losing streak and are hoping to move past comments made by LaVar Ball as they enter Tuesday's home game against the Sacramento Kings. The father of rookie point guard Lonzo Ball caused another distraction by claiming Lakers coach Luke Walton has lost control of the team.

The elder Ball made his comments Sunday, hours before the Lakers played inspired basketball by trouncing the Atlanta Hawks 132-113 for only their second victory in the past 14 games. "We need to focus our energy and minds on what we are doing and that is the message we send every day," Walton told reporters afterward. "Don't worry about what people on Twitter are saying, don't worry about what this media outlet is saying or that one or your agent. The people that matter to what we are trying to do are all in our room." Lonzo Ball and college nemesis De'Aaron Fox of Sacramento are squaring off for the second time this season and Ball (11 points, 11 assists, seven rebounds) had the better all-around game than Fox (13 points, three assists) despite the Kings recording a 113-102 victory Nov. 22. Sacramento let a 13-point lead get away Monday and lost 107-100 to the San Antonio Spurs for its sixth defeat in the past eight games.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, NBCS California (Sacramento), Spectrum Sports Net (Los Angeles)

ABOUT THE KINGS (13-26): Fox averaged 29.5 points in two games for Kentucky last season against Ball, including a memorable 39-point outing when the Wildcats eliminated Ball's UCLA team in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. His domination of Ball helped him rise to the No. 5 selection in the NBA draft (Ball went second) and he enters the latest matchup with a 15.3 average over the past three games. Fox had 11 points and matched his season best of 10 assists in Monday's loss to the Spurs, a contest in which center Willie Cauley-Stein stood out with 22 points and nine rebounds.

ABOUT THE LAKERS (12-27): Rookie forward Kyle Kuzma gets along fine with Ball the player but he publicly dismissed the comments by the father while backing Walton on Monday. "When you lose games, at the end of the day Luke isn't the one going out and shooting 2-for-15, turning the ball over, having turnovers or missing free throws," Kuzma told reporters. "That's us. Can't blame the coaching staff for everything." Kuzma, who averages a team-high 17.1 points, is trying to break out of a funk in which he has scored in single digits in three of the past seven games and experienced poor shooting performances such as 4-of-24 and 2-of-14.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Kings have won 10 of the past 12 meetings.

2. Sacramento PG George Hill is expected to miss his third straight game with his wife on the verge of giving birth.

3. Los Angeles SG Kentavious Caldwell-Pope completed his 25-day sentence for a probation violation related to his March DUI arrest and will now be available for all games after being available for home games plus road games in California while in a work release program during his jail stint.

PREDICTION: Kings 119, Lakers 117

Jets vs. Sabres Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/09/2018

The surprising Winnipeg Jets are perched atop the Central Division but staying there could be a challenge given their upcoming schedule. Owners of one the top home records in the NHL, the Jets begin a stretch of four straight and six of seven on the road that will take them to the All-Star break when they visit the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night.

Winnipeg has won five of six overall and extended its winning streak to five straight at home with a 4-1 victory over San Jose on Sunday to move two points ahead of St. Louis for first place in the Central. "November, December were tough schedules. We made the most of our home games which was really, really critical," Jets coach Paul Maurice said. "Some of those road trips can be a little taxing for your club, so you got to be good at home." Eastern Conference-worst Buffalo was forced to play the last seven away from home while the World Junior Championships were being contested at KeyBank Arena. The Sabres went 1-4-2 during that span and have dropped four in a row, including a 4-3 setback at Winnipeg on Jan. 5 that halted Buffalo's string of four straight wins in the series.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, TSN3 (Winnipeg), MSG-Buffalo

ABOUT THE JETS (25-11-7): Winnipeg is putting plenty of emphasis on the next three road games, which will take the team into its bye week. "You look at where we're positioned, and we like that. But there are teams right on our heels," said captain Blake Wheeler. "You have a bad week or two, and you're on the playoff bubble probably. There's no time for feeling gratified in January. We have to keep pushing forward." Wheeler has scored five times during a six-game point streak.

ABOUT THE SABRES (10-23-9): Starting goaltender Robin Lehner took a hard shot off the neck in Sunday's game and remained in the game after receiving treatment. He missed Monday's practice, prompting the recall of netminder Linus Ullmark and top defenseman prospect Brendan Guhle from the minors. With Lehner listed as day-to-day and backup goalie Chad Johnson falling to 1-7-3 on the season after the loss in Winnipeg, Ullmark could get the start Tuesday.

OVERTIME

1. Jets G Connor Hellebuyck is riding a nine-game point streak (7-0-2).

2. Sabres F Jason Pominville has three assists in the past 13 games -- two coming against the Jets.

3. Winnipeg has scored at least one power-play goal in five straight games, going 7-for-19 in that span.

PREDICTION: Jets 3, Sabres 2

Canucks vs. Capitals Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/09/2018

The Washington Capitals have ascended to the top of the Metropolitan Division due in large part to their resounding success at home. Winners of nine in a row and 15 of their last 17 at Capital One Arena, the Capitals vie for their fifth straight overall victory on Tuesday versus the visiting Vancouver Canucks.

Nicklas Backstrom capped his third straight multi-point performance in style on Sunday, scoring 4:17 into overtime in a 4-3 win over St. Louis to open a three-game homestand. The 30-year-old Swedish Olympian has two goals and five assists during his three-game point streak heading into a date versus Vancouver, against which he sat out a 6-2 setback on Oct. 26 due to illness. The Canucks' play of late has been rather sickly with four straight losses and a 2-10-2 mark in their last 14 contests, with losses in Toronto and Montreal over the weekend to begin their seven-game road trip. Sven Baertschi, who returned from an 11-game absence due to a broken jaw in Sunday's 5-2 loss to the Canadiens, scored two goals and added an assist in the first encounter versus Washington.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, Sportsnet Pacific (Vancouver), NBCS Washington

ABOUT THE CANUCKS (16-20-6): Daniel Sedin isn't pleased with the results, but the veteran Swede maintains that if the team continues to string together strong efforts that positive news will follow suit. "The guys are battling, for sure. That's really good to see, but I feel like we need to get that first win out of the way, and then we'll be a lot better," Sedin said. Jacob Markstrom certainly hopes so as he found himself on the wrong end of a 3-2 shootout loss at Toronto on Saturday and owns an 0-5-0 career mark with a 3.51 goals-against average and .889 save percentage versus the Capitals.

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (26-13-3): Braden Holtby came up large in overtime on Sunday to finish with 31 saves and run his unbeaten streak to four games and improve to 24-8-0 on the season. Fifteen of those wins have come at home, but the 2016 Vezina Trophy winner's worst loss of the season overall came at the hands of the Canucks after yielding five goals on 22 shots before being chased with five minutes left in the second period. Evgeny Kuznetsov scored in that contest, but has just one point - an assist - in his last six games.

OVERTIME

1. Washington has ventured past regulation in seven of its last nine games, posting a 5-0-2 mark.

2. The Canucks went 3-for-6 on the power play in the first meeting with the Capitals, but are 1-for-20 in their last seven overall.

3. Washington is 4-for-12 with the man advantage in its last four games.

PREDICTION: Capitals 5, Canucks 1

Hurricanes vs. Lightning Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/09/2018

The Tampa Bay Lightning emerged from a taxing road trip with at least a point in four of five games (3-1-1) and have two more contests before enjoying their off week, beginning with a visit from the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday night. The Lightning suffered their second straight defeat 6-3 in Ottawa on Saturday, but rebounded 24 hours later to win 5-2 at Detroit in a physical affair.

"I thought (the response) was outstanding," Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper told reporters after the victory. "You challenge these guys and they continue to answer the bell. This was an easy one to mail in. It's a five-game road trip, back to back, you go through customs. Pretty gutty effort by the guys." The Lightning should have No. 1 goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy (league-best 26 wins, .935 save percentage) back in net after he was rested Sunday, and have earned at least a point in seven straight encounters (6-0-1) with the Hurricanes, including a 5-1 decision in Carolina on Oct. 24 despite being outshot. The Hurricanes have cooled off after winning seven of eight by going 1-2-1 in their last four, capped by an embarrassing 7-1 loss at Boston on Saturday in which they surrendered five first-period goals. "Not the way we want to come into the midpoint of the season," Carolina coach Bill Peters told reporters, "but the reality is we didn't play very well."

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FS Carolinas, FS Sun (Tampa Bay)

ABOUT THE HURRICANES (19-14-8): Left wing Sebastian Aho, who shares the team lead in points (33) and goals (13), left Saturday's game with a lower-body injury but practiced Monday and is considered day-to-day. Left wing Teuvo Teravainen has posted four points in the last three games to tie the 20-year-old Fin for the top spot on the team and Jeff Skinner matches Aho in goals. Veteran right wing Justin Williams has cooled of late with one of his 25 points in the last seven contests and has not scored a goal in his past 10 outings.

ABOUT THE LIGHTNING (30-9-3): Tampa Bay had a big scare when Daniel Girardi was hit on the neck by a slapshot in Sunday's game, but the veteran defenseman is considered day-to-day after all tests came back negative Monday. Nikita Kucherov tied Alex Ovechkin for the league lead with his 27th goal Sunday and tops the NHL with 59 points - 25 of them in the last 19 contests. Forward Yanni Gourde recorded a "Gordie Howe hat trick" Sunday - the second of the season for the Lightning (also Brayden Point) - with a pair of a goals, an assist and a fight.

OVERTIME

1. Carolina activated F Lee Stempniak (upper-body) from injured reserve Monday and sent F Lucas Wallmark to AHL Charlotte.

2. The Lightning have killed all 15 power plays in the last five games and the Hurricanes are 17-for-18 over the past eight contests.

3. Carolina G Cam Ward was 8-0-2 in his previous 10 decisions before being pulled Saturday after allowing two goals on two shots.

Blackhawks vs. Senators Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/09/2018

The Christmas break has done wonders for Nick Schmaltz, who returned from the time off with eight points (four goals, four assists) in his last six games. The 21-year-old carries a three-game goal-scoring streak into Tuesday's contest as the Chicago Blackhawks aim to escape the cellar in the Central Division when they visit the Ottawa Senators.

"We've had some games where we want to be and then some nights where we're way off," Schmaltz said on the heels of Sunday's 4-1 victory over Edmonton. Captain Jonathan Toews, who has three goals and four assists during last four games, has meshed well with linemates Brandon Saad and recent recall Vinnie Hinostroza - with the latter collecting two goals and five assists during his five-game point streak. Like Schmaltz, Ottawa's Ryan Dzingel is also riding a three-game goal-scoring streak, with two tallies highlighting the team's 6-3 triumph over Tampa Bay on Saturday. The 25-year-old Illinois native's recent offensive eruption comes on the heels of a 10-game drought without a goal.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBCS Chicago, TSN5, RDS (Ottawa)

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (20-15-6): Chicago recalled Tomas Jurco from Rockford and assigned fellow forward John Hayden to the American Hockey League affiliate. Jurco has 13 goals and 12 assists with the IceHogs in 2017-18 but has underwhelmed in parts of five seasons with Detroit and the Blackhawks, with whom the 25-year-old Jurco had just one goal for his lone point in 13 games last season after being acquired for a third-round draft pick in February. Hayden, who has three goals and eight assists in 39 games this season, will be making his first trek to the minors after signing with Chicago following his senior season at Yale.

ABOUT THE SENATORS (14-17-9): Ottawa has answered a disastrous 3-8-3 mark with consecutive six-goal uprisings to win back-to-back contests for the first time since Dec. 13-16. "We're starting to come. It shows character and the ability to stick together as a team," said Mark Stone, who recorded one goal and two assists in each outing to increase his team-leading totals in both goals (17) and points (40). Captain Erik Karlsson, who has a club-best 27 assists, has set up seven goals in his last five outings.

OVERTIME

1. Blackhawks promising D Jordan Oesterle has three goals in his last five games.

2. Ottawa G Craig Anderson has made 108 saves over his last three outings (2-0-1).

3. Blackhawks D Cody Franson was placed on waivers Monday after recording one goal and six assists in 23 games this season while averaging under 15 minutes of ice time in four of his last five outings.

Flames vs. Wild Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/09/2018

The Minnesota Wild have been superb at home and a disaster on the road, a trend they hope continues for at least one more game when they host the Calgary Flames on Tuesday night. Minnesota has won four straight at home and dropped five in a row on the road after absorbing a 7-2 beating at Colorado on Saturday.

The wins and losses aside, the Wild have been been outscored 21-5 during the five-game drought away from home while owning a 19-7 scoring edge in their last four at Xcel Energy Center. "We got to learn how to win on the road," coach Bruce Boudreau said following the latest debacle. "That's ridiculous how we can play so good at home and completely opposite on the road." The Flames will kick off a four-game road trip after completing a perfect three-game homestand while extending their string of one-goal games to seven in a row. "We've had the same mindset these last few games," forward Micheal Ferland said. "We know how big these points are right now. We've just been playing simple hockey and waiting for our chances. I think it's working for us right now."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, Sportsnet West (Calgary), FS North (Minnesota)

ABOUT THE FLAMES (21-16-4): Reports that Calgary and Jaromir Jagr will be severing ties appear to be closer to fruition after the league's No. 2 career scorer did not accompany the team to Minnesota. Jagr, who will turn 46 next month, has collected only one goal and six assists in 22 games during an injury-plagued first season with the Flames. Goaltender Mike Smith has won three consecutive starts, but he is only 4-11-2 lifetime against Minnesota.

ABOUT THE WILD (22-17-3): Captain Mikko Koivu, having his least productive season since his rookie campaign in 2005-06, missed Monday's practice due to the flu and was labeled "questionable" by Boudreau. Eric Staal scored both goals Saturday at Colorado to give him seven in nine games and 19 on the season, bolstering his All-Star chances. "He'd be my pick," teammate Charlie Coyle said. "He's been a great player for us. He deserves it."

OVERTIME

1. The Wild have won both meetings this season after Calgary won the previous four matchups.

2. Flames F Johnny Gaudreau has five assists during a three-game point streak.

3. Wild G Alex Stalock, who earned the win in both matchups this season, will get the start Tuesday.

Panthers vs. Blues Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/09/2018

The St. Louis Blues owned the best record in the Western Conference a month ago but they have hit a rough patch as they prepare to play their final game before going into their bye week. St. Louis has dropped two straight and nine of its last 14 (5-8-1) but will be seeking its fourth consecutive home win versus the Florida Panthers on Tuesday night.

Coach Mike Yeo was pleased with the "response from the players" in Sunday's overtime loss at Washington after they were doubled up in Philadelphia the previous day. "Just getting that point after being down was big for us," said forward Paul Stastny, who won 17 of 24 faceoffs against the Capitals. The Panthers had a similar mindset after losing in a shootout at Columbus to fall to 0-2-1 entering the final stop of their road trip. "We've got to be happy with one point, but of course we want to win the games," center Aleksander Barkov said. "We're playing good hockey, but we're not getting two points. We need to find a way to get those two points."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FS Florida, FS Midwest (St. Louis)

ABOUT THE PANTHERS (17-18-6): James Reimer has started 14 consecutive games since Roberto Luongo was injured on Dec. 4 and it appears he will continue to take on a heavy workload. Coach Bob Boughner said Luongo is not expected to play until February after he started to feel soreness during his rehab last week. The outlook is better on forward Radim Vrbata, who has missed the last five games, but Boughner planned to talk to him to gauge his availability for Tuesday.

ABOUT THE BLUES (26-16-3): Third-leading scorer Jaden Schwartz, out since taking a puck off the foot on Dec. 9, shed his walking boot Monday but is still expected to be sidelined for at least two more weeks. Vladimir Tarasenko is picking up the offensive slack with three goals and six points over the past six games. "He seems to have not only elevated his game but the way that Barby's (Ivan Barbashev) playing right now, I think Vlady has a lot to do with that, too," Yeo said.

OVERTIME

1. Blues backup G Carter Hutton has started four of the past five in place of Jake Allen, who was in net in a 5-2 loss to Florida on Oct. 12.

2. Panthers F Jonathan Huberdeau has scored six goals in his last seven games.

3. St. Louis activated Vince Dunn off injured reserve and sent fellow D Jake Walman to Chicago of the American Hockey League.

Oilers vs. Predators Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/09/2018

Milan Lucic and the Edmonton Oilers enjoyed numerous positive memories during last season's breakout campaign, but the hurrahs have been few and far between in 2017-18. Losers of the first two contests of their five-game road trip and six of seven overall, the Oilers look to turn around their fortunes on Tuesday against a team that has defeated them 10 straight times in the Nashville Predators.

"We have to find a way to start having fun again," Lucic told the Edmonton Journal following Sunday's 4-1 setback to Chicago. "I don't think anyone is having fun right now. I think I'm speaking for everyone from the coaching staff to the trainers, the fans, everyone. Nobody is having fun right now." The Oilers have been outscored 20-3 in their last five games, and their 22nd-ranked offense and 31st-ranked penalty kill didn't help matters in their 4-0 loss to Nashville on Dec. 14. Roman Josi scored a power-play goal in that contest and also tallied in the Predators' 4-3 win over Los Angeles on Saturday. Fellow defenseman P.K. Subban set up Josi's goal versus Nashville and had two assists against the Kings to reside one point shy of 350 for his career.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network, Sportsnet (Edmonton), TVAS

ABOUT THE OILERS (18-22-3): General manager Peter Chiarelli gave coach Todd McLellan somewhat of a vote of confidence with the team spiraling in the standings. "I have no intentions of firing Todd," Chiarelli told Sportsnet. "I want to work with the coach, and I think he's a very good coach. As far as Todd goes, and (his staff), I am not considering firing them. At this point we're going to solve it together." Edmonton has languished in the standings this season after earning a playoff berth for the first time since 2006 in 2016-17.

ABOUT THE PREDATORS (24-11-6): While Kyle Turris has been music to the ears of the Nashville faithful since being acquired in a three-team trade, he has also provided Edmonton with sour notes on two occasions with two different clubs this season. The 28-year-old scored two goals and set up another in Ottawa's 6-1 rout on Oct. 14 before donning a Predators jersey with a goal and an assist against the Oilers last month. Turris increased his point total to 19 (five goals, 14 assists) by setting up Josi's goal against the Kings to give Nashville its third win in nine outings (3-4-2).

OVERTIME

1. Nashville G Pekka Rinne owns an 18-6-1 mark with four shutouts and a .915 save percentage in 28 career appearances versus Edmonton.

2. The Oilers failed on all three power-play opportunities versus the Predators in the first encounter to begin a stretch of going 3-for-34 with the man advantage in their last 12 games.

3. The 2017 Indy Car series champion and Hendersonville native Josef Newgarden will serve as the official towel waver at Tuesday's game.

Georgetown vs. St. John's Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/09/2018

Poor shooting and poor defense has Georgetown reeling heading into Tuesday's Big East game at St. John's. The Hoyas were blown out for the first time this season Saturday at home by No. 22 Creighton and will need to rebound to avoid a third straight defeat to the Red Storm.

No starter scored in double figures or played much defense against Creighton, which enjoyed a 30-point edge from beyond the arc and limited the Hoyas to 36.5 percent shooting in the 90-66 victory. "We have to do a better job of competing," Georgetown coach Patrick Ewing told the media. "Games like this is when we need to rise to the occasion. We have to play better." Jessie Govan was held to single digits in points and rebounds for the first time this season for the Hoyas, who had won 10 of 13 games this decade against St. John's prior to dropping a pair of close games last season. Shamorie Ponds has struggled in his return from a one-game absence because of a knee injury as the sophomore shot 31.5 percent from the field and 2-of-16 from 3-point territory in two games for the Red Storm, who have lost four straight.

TV: 6:30 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1

ABOUT GEORGETOWN (11-4, 1-3 Big East): The downward spiral of Jonathan Mulmore's game in the Big East may have hit rock bottom in the loss to Creighton. The senior point, who made a positive impact during an easy non-conference schedule, went scoreless and now has scored a total 13 points in four league games. Jagan Mosely, a sophomore, has thoroughly outplayed his teammate in Big East games and was the lone Hoya to hit double figures Saturday, but neither did a good job of finding Govan, who had a season-low seven field goal attempts.

ABOUT ST. JOHN'S (10-6, 0-4): Bashir Ahmed has played some of his best basketball during the four-game losing streak, including his first back-to-back 20-points games in the most recent losses to Creighton and DePaul, but the Red Storm haven't been able to make up for the absence of Marcus LoVett, who has missed the last nine contests. "We are at the bottom of the barrel and have to work our way up," coach Chris Mullin told the media. "The only way to do that is to work hard, be aggressive and I think we have to be more physical." Ponds could break out of his shooting slump at any time and the Brooklyn native averaged 17.7 points in the three games against the Hoyas last season, including 24 points in the home meeting.

TIP-INS

1. Govan has scored in double figures only once in five career games against St. John's.

2. The Red Storm had won eight straight at home against DePaul prior to Saturday's 91-74 loss.

3. St. John's, which owns a 28-11 mark at home in the series, has won two straight and seven of the last 10 meetings with Georgetown at Madison Square Garden, the site of Tuesday's game.

PREDICTION: Georgetown 78, St. John's 71

Penn State vs. Indiana Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/08/2018

A pair of Big Ten teams hoping to break free from the middle of the pack meet Tuesday in Indiana as the Hoosiers host Penn State in the first meeting since a triple-overtime thriller last February. Behind a career-high 28 points by Robert Johnson, Indiana picked up a big road win with a 75-71 triumph at Minnesota on Saturday to pull to .500 early in the conference schedule.

The win came after the Hoosiers learned that 6-10 sophomore De'Ron Davis would be out indefinitely with a leg injury and after sixth man Collin Hartman was unable to go due to a sore right shoulder. "It was a next-man-up mentality when De'Ron went down, and then we saw Collin go down," Indiana forward Juwan Morgan told reporters. "The show doesn't stop because we're missing a few actors." The Nittany Lions also received a career-best performance from Lamar Stevens, who made 14-of-19 shots en route to 30 points in a 78-63 win over Northwestern on Friday. The sophomore forward is averaging 17.8 points on 53.7 percent shooting in four Big Ten games for Penn State.

TV: 6:30 p.m. ET, Big Ten Network

ABOUT PENN STATE (12-5, 2-2 Big Ten): Stevens' big performance helped the Nittany Lions overcome a poor shooting game for leading scorer Tony Carr (18.3 points per game), who was 3-of-13 from the floor and had 12 points. Mike Watkins is emerging as a force along the front line and has two consecutive 17-rebound performances while producing 35 points on 13-of-17 shooting. Watkins ranks second among Big Ten players in field-goal percentage (68.3) and blocks (3.4), and Penn State has the league's top two players in steals with Josh Reaves (2.4) and Jamari Wheeler (2.1) leading the way.

ABOUT INDIANA (9-7, 2-2): Morgan also had a big game against Minnesota by scoring 20 points while tying career highs with 12 rebounds and four blocked shots. He and Johnson rank as the team's only two double-digit scorers but freshman Justin Smith had a breakout performance versus the Golden Gophers with 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Johnson has established season highs in assists in each of the last two games, first handing out five in a loss to Wisconsin and then dishing seven against Minnesota.

TIP-INS

1. Johnson's previous best scoring effort was a 27-point showing in the 110-102 win in three OTs against the Nittany Lions last season.

2. Penn State G Shep Garner averages 10.2 points but has a total of five on 2-of-9 shooting over his last two games.

3. The Nittany Lions rank fifth in the Big Ten in 3-point percentage at 37.8, while the Hoosiers are 13th at 31.2.

Baylor vs. West Virginia Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/09/2018

Entering the week with 14 straight wins and a sparkling-new No. 2 national ranking, West Virginia is the hottest team in the nation's top-ranked conference. The Mountaineers also are in the midst of a rugged scheduling stretch which continues Tuesday with a home game against Baylor.

On Saturday, West Virginia garnered national headlines by cooling off red-hot guard Trae Young, who entered the game leading the nation in scoring and assists, in an 89-76 home win over No. 7 Oklahoma. Senior guard and team scoring leader Jevon Carter had 16 points and did most of the defensive pestering of Young - who finished with a game-high 29 points but hit only 8-of-22 shots, including 3-of-12 3-pointers, and finished with a season-high eight turnovers - and was joined in double figures by teammates Teddy Allen (20 points), Lamont West (17) and Sagaba Konate (16). On the season, West Virginia has six players averaging at least 9.1 points per game while a slightly different six are averaging 3.4 rebounds or more per outing. "It hasn't been all JC (Jevon Carter)," Mountaineers coach Bob Huggins said Saturday in his post-game news conference. "Dax (Daxter Miles Jr.), Teddy (Allen) has his moments, Beetle (guard James Bolden) has had moments. ... It's like a golf scramble. Everyone doesn't have to hit a good shot - just somebody - and that's kind of what has happened to us. Someone always steps up and makes plays."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN2

ABOUT BAYLOR (11-4, 1-2 Big 12): The Bears had been ranked up until last week's poll but had lost their first two conference games prior to Saturday's 69-60 home win over Texas. Senior guard Manu Lecomte is pacing five double-digit scorers with 16.8 points per outing, but has struggled in Big 12 play, averaging 11 points on 25-percent shooting, including 4-of-18 from 3-point range. Fellow senior Jo Lual-Acuil Jr. (16.1 points), Terry Matson (10.4), Nuni Omot (10.4) and King McClure (10.3) also are averaging double figures while the 7-foot Lual-Acuil Jr. (9.8 rebounds) and Matson (7.0) are the team's leaders on the glass.

ABOUT WEST VIRGINIA (14-1, 3-0): The Mountaineers haven't lost since a season-opening 88-65 defeat to Texas A&M at Ramstein Air Base in Germany. Since then, they've won all six of their road/neutral-site games and have gone 8-0 at home, where they've won by an average of 34.2 points, including victories over top-10 foes Oklahoma and Virginia (68-61 on Dec. 5). Carter (16.7 points), Miles Jr. (13.9), West (12.9) and Bolden (10.5) are all averaging double figures while the 6-foot-8 Konate (7.2 boards), Carter (5.7) and West (5.4) are the leading rebounders.

TIP-INS

1. Baylor has won eight of the 12 meetings - all since 2011 - but West Virginia has won three of the last four, including an 89-68 home victory over the then-top-ranked Bears on Jan. 10, 2017.

2. The Bears will have to be very wary of taking care of the ball as the Mountaineers and their pressing defense are pacing the Big 12 and rank second nationally with a plus-8.3 average turnover margin while Baylor is last in the league and ranks 299th nationally at minus-2.0.

3. West Virginia's shortcomings have been few, but it does rank next to last in the Big 12 in 3-point shooting at 32.7 percent.

PREDICTION: West Virginia 78, Baylor 70

Texas A&M vs. Kentucky Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/09/2018

Two weeks removed from being a top-five team, reeling Texas A&M hopes to avoid an 0-4 start to SEC play when the Aggies travel to No. 20 Kentucky on Tuesday. The Wildcats are looking for a rebound of their own after having a three-game winning streak snapped Saturday at Tennessee.

The Aggies rolled into SEC play with an impressive resume, their lone defeat a three-point neutral-site loss to No. 21 Arizona, but a rash of injuries coincided with leading scorer D.J. Hogg's three-game suspension to spur a three-game skid to begin the SEC schedule. Hogg returned to the lineup for Saturday's 69-68 home loss to LSU, but the Aggies were without big man Robert Williams (illness), and guards Admon Gilder (knee) and Duane Wilson (knee), all of whose status will be game-time decisions Tuesday. Kentucky coach John Calipari was disappointed in his team's lack of toughness in a 76-65 loss to the No. 23 Volunteers. The Wildcats led by eight at halftime but had a tough time with Tennessee's big men in the second half, and will face another strong frontcourt against the Aggies.

ABOUT TEXAS A&M (11-4, 0-3 SEC): When the Aggies are at full strength, they create matchup problems all over the court. Big men Tyler Davis (14.1 points, 8.4 rebounds per game) and Williams (8.4 points, 10.0 rebounds, 2.7 blocks) are one of the strongest post duos in the nation, and Hogg (14.4 points, 6.8 rebounds) and Gilder (12.7 points, 5.3 rebounds) are big, physical guards who can score in various ways. They've missed having Wilson (12.1 points, 4.5 assists) at the point the past two games, averaging 15 turnovers without their primary distributor.

ABOUT KENTUCKY (12-3, 2-1): The Wildcats are young, even by Calipari's standards, as six of the eight players in their rotation are freshmen - including all five starters - and the other two are sophomores. Freshman forward Kevin Knox (14.0 points, 5.9 rebounds) is the team's leading scorer, but has averaged only 9.7 points while shooting 32.3 percent from the field in three SEC games, and No. 2 scorer Hamidou Diallo (13.7 points) has struggled to 7.3 points in conference play. Reserve guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (11.5 points, 4.3 assists) has had the hot hand in SEC play, averaging 14 points despite scoring only three versus the Volunteers.

TIP-INS

1. The Wildcats have won three in a row against the Aggies, including a 100-58 rout in the last matchup in Lexington, but four of the last seven meetings have gone to overtime.

2. Kentucky is 40-8 following a loss under Calipari.

3. Williams has blocked a shot in 41 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the nation.

Tulane vs. Memphis Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/09/2018

Memphis claimed its first American Athletic Conference victory Saturday, defeating Tulsa 76-67 to end its three-game skid. The Tigers remain at home for the second straight outing, taking on a Tulane team that fell to Tulsa on Sunday but rebounded four days later with a 73-70 victory over SMU, the Green Wave's 11th triumph, five more than last season's total.

The Tigers' win over the Golden Hurricane coincided with leading scorer Jeremiah Martin (17.3 points per game) regaining his shooting touch as the junior point guard connected on 9-of-17 shots en route to a career-best 28 points after hitting just 9-of-34 combined in the three prior games -- losses to LSU, Cincinnati and Central Florida. "What can you say about Jeremiah?" Memphis coach Tubby Smith told reporters afterward. "He really stepped up. He orchestrated. He ran the offense the right way." While the Tigers rely heavily on Martin, Tulane boasts the conference's No. 2 scoring duo (33.6 PPG) in Melvin Frazier (16.9) and Cameron Reynolds (16.7). The two spearheaded the Green Wave's comeback victory over the defending conference champion Mustangs the last time out, with Reynolds topping the team with 20 points and six rebounds and Frazier adding 15 points on 5-for-8 shooting, with five assists and four rebounds.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPNews

ABOUT TULANE (11-4, 2-1 AAC): The Green Wave made 18-of-20 free throws against SMU, including 9-of-10 in the second half when they took control en route to their fourth win in the last five games. Including the victory over SMU when he notched three steals, Frazier has seven games in which he has at least three takeaways and entered Monday ranked first in the conference with 36 steals and 2.4 per game. Reynolds (6.7) and Frazier (5.8) are also first and second on the team in rebounds, while sophomore forward Samir Sehic sits third on the team to the dynamic duo in both points (10.1) and rebounds (5.5).

ABOUT MEMPHIS (10-6, 1-2): For his efforts Sunday, which also included a season-high eight assists and 17 points during an 18-3 run in the second half, Martin was named to the AAC's weekly honor roll for the fourth time this season. Kyvon Davenport (12.6) is the only other Tiger averaging in double figures and he also tops the team with 5.8 rebounds per game. The Tigers are shooting just 29.3 percent from beyond the arc this season and sit last in the conference in defending the 3-point shot (37.2).

TIP-INS

1. Tulane's Mike Dunleavy, Sr., and Memphis' Smith are the only men's basketball head coaches with a son who is also a head coach at the NCAA Division I level -- Baker Dunleavy became the head coach at Quinnipiac in April 2017 and G.G. Smith took over Loyola-Maryland in 2013.

2. The Tigers have owned the series with the Green Wave, holding a 50-11 overall advantage, including winning the last three.

3. All 10 of Memphis' wins this season have come at FedEx Forum.

South Carolina vs. Alabama Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/09/2018

With the college football season finally coming to a close Monday, the focus on Alabama's campus shifts to men's basketball - yet another reason why the Crimson Tide need to clean things up heading into Tuesday's encounter with visiting South Carolina. Alabama's dismal showing from beyond the arc led to a 19-point loss to Georgia last time out, the Crimson Tide's third loss in the past four games.

Freshman phenom Collin Sexton scored 23 of Alabama's 46 points in the setback to the Bulldogs, as the Crimson Tide connected on just four of their 23 attempts from beyond the arc in their worst offensive showing of the season. "We just didn't make any backside 3s," coach Avery Johnson told reporters after the game. "Then there were times that we had backside 3s that we pump faked and drove when we were wide open." Up next: Alabama's only meeting of the season with a South Carolina team that opened SEC play with losses to Ole Miss and Missouri before defeating Vanderbilt 71-60. Chris Silva erupted for a collegiate-high 27 points and eight rebounds while Wesley Myers scored all 17 of his points after halftime.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, SEC Network

ABOUT SOUTH CAROLINA (10-5, 1-2 SEC): The Gamecocks face long odds to return to the Final Four, thanks in large part to a sputtering offense that ranks 286th nationally in shooting percentage (42.2), 253rd in 3-point success rate (33.2 percent) and 296th in free-throw percentage (66.5). Silva's 14.6 points and 8.1 rebounds pace the team, and he has connected on 13-of-21 shots over his previous two games. Frank Booker (10.9) is the only other South Carolina player averaging double figures in points and has a combined nine points on 1-of-9 shooting over his past two outings.

ABOUT ALABAMA (9-6, 1-2): Sexton has sufficiently recovered from a Texas-sized shooting slump in which he went just 7-for-24 against the Longhorns and Aggies after averaging 23.5 points on 56.7 percent shooting over his previous two games. But his long-range game has all but disappeared for the past month, with the Georgia native having connected on just 3-of-15 attempts over his past five contests. Second-year guard Dazon Ingram (11.1 ppg, 6.6 rpg) missed the loss to Georgia with the flu and is questionable for Tuesday's encounter with the Gamecocks.

TIP-INS

1. Alabama prevailed 90-86 in quadruple overtime in last year's only regular-season meeting.

2. Sexton has committed multiple turnovers in 10 of his last 11 games.

3. Silva averaged just 8.5 points and 6.5 rebounds in two encounters with the Crimson Tide last season.

PREDICTION: South Carolina 76, Alabama 70

Texas Tech vs. Oklahoma Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/08/2018

No 8 Texas Tech is off to a 3-0 start in Big 12 play for only the second time in school history and has yet to trail in conference action, quite an accomplishment when you consider two of the wins were over then-No. 18 Baylor (77-53) and at 13-time defending champion Kansas (85-73). But now the Red Raiders play two top-10 ranked teams in the span of five days this week beginning with a Tuesday night game at No. 9 Oklahoma.

The Sooners had a 10-game win streak snapped Saturday at current No. 2 West Virginia (89-76) which begins the week tied with Texas Tech for first place in the Big 12. The Mountaineers, who have won 14 in a row, will visit Lubbock on Saturday. Red Raiders coach Chris Beard, who was an assistant under Bobby Knight the last time Texas Tech started 3-0 in Big 12 play in 2003-04, knows his team will have to be at its best this week to build on its eight-game win streak. "These games are so hard to win," Beard said after his team's 74-58 victory over visiting Kansas State. "I don't think people understand how hard it is to win a game in the Big 12 Conference. There is great preparation, and you have to play well. ... We found a way to win out third Big 12 game. We are looking forward to the next one."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPNU

ABOUT TEXAS TECH (14-1, 3-0 Big 12): The Red Raiders rank fourth nationally in scoring defense allowing 59.2 points per game and fifth in field goal percentage defense (37.3 percent) while also topping the Big 12 in rebound margin (plus-8.5) but will be put to the test by Oklahoma, which leads in the nation in scoring (94.4) and is led by dynamic freshman guard Trae Young. Tech also has some pretty talented guards led by senior Keenan Evans, who leads the team in scoring (17.2), assists (3.6) and steals (23). Zhaire Smith, a 6-5 freshman guard, is second in scoring (10.7) and has scored in double figures in 10 straight games while freshman guard Jarrett Culver also is averaging in double digits (10.3).

ABOUT OKLAHOMA (12-2, 2-1): The 6-2 Young, who is drawing comparisons to NBA star Stephen Curry, leads the nation in both scoring (29.4) and assists (10.2) by wide margins but is coming off what for him was a so-so game in the loss to the Mountaineers, finishing with 29 points on just 8-of-22 shooting and turning the ball over a season-high eight times while dishing off just five assists. The Sooners had 17 turnovers at West Virginia which finished with a 21-9 edge in points off turnovers and held the Sooners to 43.1 percent shooting. Junior guard Christian James (12.6 points) and 6-9 freshman forward Brady Manek (11.0) also are averaging in double figures while senior forward Khadeem Lattin leads the team in rebounding (7.7).

TIP-INS

1. Young already has had seven games with at least 25 points and 10 assists, the most for a player in a college career over the last 20 years.

2. Evans has scored 25 or more points in a game four times this season and 20 or more points in a game 14 times in his career.

3. Texas Tech has outrebounded all three Big 12 opponents by double figures.

Boston College vs. North Carolina Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/09/2018

No. 18 North Carolina hopes to avoid its first three-game losing streak in four years when vastly-improved Boston College pays a visit for an ACC matchup on Tuesday night. The Tar Heels, who are off to their worst league start (1-2) since going 0-3 in 2013-14, lost by one point at Florida State last Wednesday and shot just 29.6 percent from the field while turning the ball over 19 times in a 61-49 setback at Virginia on Saturday.

"We just need some more guys to give effort," North Carolina senior point guard Joel Berry II told the Raleigh News & Observer. "That's the biggest thing right now - Xs and Os, all that stuff, you can take care of that. Playing hard and giving intensity and knowing that each and every play is important, that's what we've got to get guys to understand." The Tar Heels will have to be alert against Boston College, which has wins against Duke and Wake Forest at home and lost at Virginia by just a single point. Junior guard Jerome Robinson leads a high-scoring trio in the backcourt for the Eagles - all logging at least 34 minutes per game - and is averaging 27.3 points with 11 makes from 3-point range over the last three contests. "We don't wear down - knock on wood," BC coach Jim Christian told reporters. "We rest. We don't really practice that long because these guys know what we're doing."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ACC Network

ABOUT BOSTON COLLEGE (11-5, 2-2 ACC): Robinson tops the team in scoring (18.5) and is draining 46.8 percent of his 3-point attempts while sophomore Ky Bowman (15.7) and junior Jordan Chatman (13.5) give the Eagles three major threats. Chatman hopes to rebound from a 2-for-10 shooting performance over the last two games and Bowman contributes 7.1 rebounds along with a team-high 5.0 assists. Freshman forward Steffon Mitchell scored 17 against Wake Forest - more than 10 above his average - and boasts a season-high four blocks in each of the last two contests.

ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA (12-4, 1-2): Junior forward Luke Maye managed a season-low six points on 2-of-10 shooting at Virginia and relinquished the team scoring lead to Berry, dropping to 17.3 points along with a Tar Heel-best 10.4 rebounds. Berry averaged 20.7 points over the last six games to push his season mark to 17.9, but North Carolina started the week 178th in the nation in least turnovers per game (13.4). "It's lot of things," coach Roy Williams told reporters. "We've got to be stronger with the ball. ... You've got to get your brain and your heart both involved."

TIP-INS

1. The Tar Heels have won 10 straight meetings and the last time the Eagles won in Chapel Hill, N.C. was 2009.

2. North Carolina junior G Kenny Williams (12.7 points) has drained 34 from 3-point range - second on the team behind Berry (39).

3. Robinson, Bowman and Chatman have combined to shoot 40.2 percent from 3-point range, making 102 in all (6.4 per game).

Syracuse vs. Virginia Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/09/2018

Virginia once again is among the top defensive teams in the country and may be coming off its top defensive effort of the season. After holding the defending national champions to 49 points, the third-ranked Cavaliers aim to suffocate visiting Syracuse on Tuesday.

North Carolina made only 16 baskets, compared to 19 turnovers, and had virtually no answers for the Cavaliers' defense, which is allowing 52.5 points per game, tops in the nation. "I told (Virginia coach Tony Bennett) that's about as good a defensive game as anybody has played against us, maybe ever, but definitely in a long time," North Carolina coach Roy Williams said. Syracuse is coming off a two-point loss against Notre Dame, allowing a follow-up bucket with 2.6 seconds left to fall to 2-3 since opening the season with 11 wins in 12 games. "We've got to make a decision as a team," point guard Frank Howard said. "We got comfortable and you can just see that in our play. We're not going after the ball. We don't have that chip on our shoulder. We're going to lose if we play like that."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ACC Network

ABOUT SYRACUSE (12-4, 1-2 ACC): The Orange have not scored more than 68 points in any of their last five games, and only three players on the team scored more than four points against Notre Dame. Tyus Battle (21 points) led the way versus the Fighting Irish, while Howard and Oshae Brissett combined for 20 points on 7-of-24 shooting. Brissett's shooting percentage is down to 33.5 percent, although the freshman forward does have eight double-doubles on the season.

ABOUT VIRGINIA (14-1, 3-0): The Cavaliers are led by a trio of 3-point shooters - Kyle Guy, Devon Hall and Ty Jerome, all of whom shoot at least 44.1 percent from 3-point range. Guy, the team's top scorer at 14.9 points per game, had made multiple 3-pointers in seven straight games before going 1-of-6 from long range against North Carolina. Hall registered a team-high 16 points on 4-of-4 3-point shooting and had a season-high seven assists, while Jerome made a pair of 3s, giving him 16 over the last five games.

TIP-INS

1. Virginia F Isaiah Wilkins has 12 blocks over the last four games.

2. In last season's matchup, Syracuse overcame a 12-point deficit at halftime to upset Virginia, 66-62 at the Carrier Dome.

3. In the last 10 games, Battle has played 407 of a possible 410 minutes.

Wisconsin vs. Nebraska Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/09/2018

Nebraska is coming off a game in which it wishes it could get a mulligan for the first 10 minutes, while Wisconsin would probably like nothing more than to forget about its last outing altogether. A pair of teams hoping to sneak back over .500 in Big Ten play meet Tuesday when the Badgers travel to Lincoln to meet the Cornhuskers.

No. 7 Purdue raced out to a 15-point advantage less than 10 minutes into Saturday's game and managed to keep Nebraska at an arm's length thereafter in a 74-62 setback for the Cornhuskers, who held the Boilermakers to 36.7 percent from the field after they knocked down nine of their first 12 shots. "We'd definitely like to replay it. They came out stronger than we did. They sustained it. Every time we looked up at the clock later in the game, they were still up nine or 10. We just couldn't bounce back from it, and that hurts," Nebraska junior guard James Palmer Jr. told reporters. Wisconsin began a stretch in which it plays five of six away from home with a thud Friday, falling 64-60 at Rutgers to give the Scarlet Knights their first conference win of the season. "The most important thing was taking care of the ball and we didn't do that well at all. You've got to be able to maximize every possession and we had 14 possessions where we didn't do a good job," Badgers coach Greg Gard told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, Big Ten Network

ABOUT WISCONSIN (9-8, 2-2 Big Ten): The Badgers took care of business inside the arc Friday by converting 61.8 percent of their shots, but they could not overcome a 2-for-13 showing from 3-point range and were minus-eight in turnover differential. Ethan Happ is the only major-conference player averaging at least 16 points (16.7), eight rebounds (8.4) and three assists (3.5) per game and coming off his sixth double-double of the season (10 points, 10 boards), although the junior forward also committed half of his team's turnovers (seven) versus Rutgers. Brad Davison (11.9 points), who leads all Big Ten freshmen in scoring, is averaging 14.7 points over his last seven outings and has drained at least one 3-pointer in 15 of his last 16 games.

ABOUT NEBRASKA (11-6, 2-2): Palmer (team-best 15.6 points) and Isaac Copeland (12.4 points, team-high 6.5 rebounds) continued their usual steady play against the Boilermakers with 38 points on a combined 13-for-25 from the field, but their teammates could muster only 24 points on 9-of-29 shooting. One of the players who struggled the most was Glynn Watson Jr. (12.1 points), who finished 2-of-10 with seven points; the junior point guard had 19 points against Northwestern but has totaled 10 points in his other three games combined and is shooting 30.2 percent in his last five outings overall. Palmer (102) ranks fifth in the Big Ten in free-throw attempts and is one of only two guards in the conference with more than 100 for the season.

TIP-INS

1. Wisconsin has won eight of 10 in this series since Nebraska joined the Big Ten in 2011, although they split their meetings in 2015-16 and the Badgers prevailed 70-69 in overtime in their only meeting last season.

2. The Cornhuskers' 1.28 assist-to-turnover ratio is their best rate since posting a 1.64 mark in 1985-86.

3. Davison is vying to become only the fourth Badger in the last 20 years - joining Devin Harris, Alando Tucker and Happ - to average at least 10 points during his freshman campaign.

Butler vs. Creighton Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/09/2018

The good news for Butler is that the remainder of its schedule won't be nearly as difficult as it has been for the last 1 1/2 weeks, but the bad news is that its most challenging stretch of the season isn't quite over yet. The Bulldogs will play the last of four straight ranked Big East opponents Tuesday when they visit No. 22 Creighton.

Butler won each of its first two conference games, a double-overtime thriller at Georgetown on Dec. 27 just three days prior to handing No. 1 Villanova its only loss of the season, before its four-game winning streak was halted with last Tuesday's 86-79 setback at 10th-ranked Xavier. The Bulldogs picked up their second straight defeat Saturday, letting an 11-point lead with just under 10 minutes remaining slip away versus No. 15 Seton Hall. The Bluejays, who have won three of the last four meetings in this rivalry, drained 10 3-pointers in the first half and 16 for the game Saturday to cruise to a 90-66 victory over Georgetown. Creighton has won eight of its last nine overall and 11 straight home games, including a 10-0 mark this season in which it has outscored opponents by an average margin of 28.3 points.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1

ABOUT BUTLER (12-5, 2-2 Big East): The bench outscored Seton Hall's 32-14 and the Bulldogs finished 25-of-28 from the foul line Saturday, but its struggles defending the 3-pointer - Butler ranks 308th in Division I (37.7) - proved to be its downfall yet again as the Pirates shot 11-for-22 from long-range. Senior forward Kelan Martin, who ranks third in the conference in scoring (19.8 points) and paces the team in rebounding (6.5), is averaging 25.8 points on 48.7-percent shooting in league play. After scoring 26 points per game over his first three Big East outings, Kamar Baldwin (15.3 points, 4.9 boards) was limited to 14 versus the Pirates, although the 6-1 sophomore guard managed to extend his streak of collecting at least five rebounds to seven games.

ABOUT CREIGHTON (13-3, 3-1): Although sophomore forward Martin Krampelj (12.7 points, 8.2 rebounds) has emerged as a top offensive threat in the frontcourt this year and posted his third double-double in four games, it was Toby Hegner's turn in the spotlight Saturday, as the 6-10 senior buried a career-high five 3-pointers en route to a season-high 19-point effort. Sophomore guard Davion Mintz (8.1 points, 2.8 assists) responded well to a late-game benching in Wednesday's win over St. John's, tallying a career-high 17 points and six assists without committing a turnover Saturday. Leading scorer Marcus Foster (18.8 points) went 3-for-14 from the field and finished with nine points against the Hoyas, ending his 33-game streak of reaching double figures - which was the eighth-longest active streak in the country.

TIP-INS

1. Creighton has only trailed for 75:49 of a possible 640 minutes.

2. Martin and Baldwin have combined for five 25-point outings during Big East play this season. Over the previous three full seasons combined, the Bulldogs managed only 14 such performances.

3. Foster's nine-point effort Saturday marked only the third time he has scored in single figures in 51 career games with the Bluejays.

Seton Hall vs. Marquette Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/09/2018

Stopping Markus Howard will need to be the priority for No. 15 Seton Hall when it plays a Big East game Tuesday at Marquette. Howard has gone off for 89 points in the last two games for the Golden Eagles and the sophomore had some success against the Pirates last season.

After matching the Big East record of 52 points in a win over Providence, Howard threw down 37 points to go along with eight assists in a loss to No. 1 Villanova and has supplanted teammate Andrew Rowsey as the league's top scorer. Howard, who led the nation in 3-point shooting last season, didn't give much indication that he was about to tie or break several school and conference records as he scored 36 points and struggled from beyond the arc in the three games prior to facing Providence. In fact, it was Rowsey who entered the new year on a roll with back-to-back 30-point games and the senior can hurt the Pirates should they focus too much on Howard, whose 32 second-half points against the Friars are the most in any half in a Big East game, topping the 28 points scored by Kerry Kittles of Villanova in 1995. The Pirates received big games from the usual characters, including 28 points and 15 rebounds from Angel Delgado, to rally for a win at Butler and are the lone team with a perfect mark in Big East play.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, CBS Sports Network

ABOUT SETON HALL (14-2, 3-0 Big East): A loss to Rutgers in mid-December appears to have been the turning point for Khadeen Carrington, who has looked like his old self in the past five games. Perhaps the senior became more comfortable in the role of point guard or maybe coach Kevin Willard gave him the green light to shoot more but either way, the results are showing. After going 8-of-37 from 3-point range in the first 11 games, Carrington is 22-of-36 from deep in the past five games and has averaged 22.4 points to lead the Pirates to five straight wins.

ABOUT MARQUETTE (11-5, 2-2 Big East): Part of the reason that Howard and Rowsey have been able to produce such big games is that the Golden Eagles don't have anyone else that can do it. Sophomore Sam Hauser has been a solid player, averaging 14.0 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.1 assists, but the fourth-leading scorer for coach Steve Wojciechowski is a player that left the team in November. The frontcourt, which includes centers Matt Heldt and Harry Froling, and forward Jamal Cain doesn't supply much in the way of offense and will have to contend with two of the Big East's top players in Delgado and Angel Rodriguez on the defensive end.

TIP-INS

1. Howard averaged 18 points and hit seven 3-pointers as the Golden Eagles, who lead the series 16-7, split a pair of games last season with the Pirates.

2. Carrington needs four points and 14 assists to move into the top 15 in program history in both categories for Seton Hall, which has won three straight Big East road games dating back to last season.

3. Howard, who is 51-of-51 from the foul line, and Fletcher Magee of Wofford (40-for-40) are the only two players in the country to be perfect from the stripe.

NHL Betting Cheat Sheet and Odds: Caps back on top in the Metropolitan
Monty Andrews

The Washington Capitals are once again masters of the Metropolitan Division, as they put their four-game winning streak on the line Tuesday night against the visiting Vancouver Canucks.

The Only Game in Town

Hockey bettors might go a bit crazy this week, with just 13 total games on the schedule between Monday and Thursday. The week kicks off with a one-game ledger, as the Toronto Maple Leafs host the Columbus Blue Jackets on a night where most of the sports world will be fixated on the college football national championship game. But don't sleep on this one, with plenty of interesting trends to pursue. Most notably: The Maple Leafs have a significant home edge in this one; they've won five of their past six games at Air Canada Centre while the visiting Blue Jackets have dropped six of their previous seven away from Columbus.

Winning Washington

The Washington Capitals are once again masters of the Metropolitan Division, as they put their four-game winning streak on the line Tuesday night against the visiting Vancouver Canucks. The Capitals have used their recent hot stretch, combined with the New Jersey Devils' five-game winless skid, to open up a three-game edge atop the division coming into the week - and oddsmakers believe they'll stay there, making them the prohibitive +220 favorite on Bet365 to finish atop the Metropolitan by season's end. Things are decidedly bleaker for the Canucks, who come into this one having dropped four in a row.

Unlikely Central Cellar Dwellers

The Minnesota Wild and Chicago Blackhawks were expected to contend for the Central Division title coming into the season - but as we reach the unofficial first half of the campaign, neither team looks like a division champion as they square off Wednesday night at United Center. Both teams are on the periphery of the Western Conference playoff picture and occupy the bottom two spots in the division; the Wild own a one-point edge over Chicago, but the Blackhawks have a game in hand. Minnesota is installed at +1,300 on Bet365 to claim the Central title, while the Blackhawks find themselves at +1,700 as of Monday.

Injury Updates

* The New York Rangers will have to do without forward Chris Kreider for a while longer as he deals with a blood clot in his arm and a required rib resection. The Rangers are 11-4-1 SU in games in which Kreider has recorded at least one point.

* Winnipeg Jets forward Mark Scheifele is expected to be out another six weeks with an upper-body injury, but his team appears to be doing just fine without him. The Jets are 4-0-1 since Scheifele went down, scoring four or more goals four times in that span.

* The Colorado Avalanche are in a similar situation, having gone 5-1-0 since losing defensive star Tyson Barrie to a broken hand. Barrie, who is expected to be out another six weeks, is enjoying a sensational season with 27 points through 34 games.

Player News

* Looking for a model of consistency? Look no further than league scoring leader Nikita Kucherov of the Tampa Bay Lighting, who has been held without a point just seven times in 42 games. The Lightning are 3-3-1 SU in those seven contests.

* Colorado Avalanche forward Nathan McKinnon has surged into second place in the league scoring race with 52 points; 12 of those have come in his last five games. the Avs are 18-7-2 SU in games in which McKinnon hits the scoresheet.

* It has been nearly a month since Marc-Andre Fleury returned to action, and the Vegas Golden Knights netminder has been simply outstanding in that span. Fleury is 6-1-1 in eight starts, recording two shutouts and allowing more than two goals just once.

Stanley Cup Futures

* There's the Tampa Bay Lightning - and then there's everyone else. Bet365 has the East-leading Lightning as the runaway favorites to win their second Stanley Cup championship, installing them at +575 heading into the week.

* The slumping Devils have seen their Stanley Cup prospects take a nosedive, leaving them with the fifth-best odds in the East entering Monday. Bet365 has New Jersey at +1,400, behind Tampa, Washington, Boston and Toronto.

* Don't look now, but the Colorado Avalanche are paying out a lot less to end their Stanley Cup drought than they were earlier in the season. Colorado is now listed at +2,500 to win its first NHL championship since 2001.

Over/Under Trends

* As good a show as Vegas puts on at home (18-2-1 SU), the expansion Golden Knights have been plenty entertaining away from Sin City, as well. Vegas is 12-7-1 O/U through 20 road games, and 23-16-2 O/U so far this season.

* The Honda Center hasn't seen much red-light action this season, with the Anaheim Ducks having gone 6-14-1 O/U through their first 21 home contests. The Ducks rank 27th in home goals per game (2.62) and 14th in goals against (2.62).

10* FREE NCAAB PICK (Michigan +1.5)
I'll gladly take a shot here on the Wolverines as a home dog against the Boilermakers. There was concerns over how good this Michigan team would be after what they lost from last year, but John Beilein has done a nice job using what he had coming back and the new recruits to make this a legit Big Ten contender. Purdue is the No. 5 ranked team and coming in having won 11 straight, but I don't think they should be favored on the road here against a team of Michigan's caliber.
Purdue comes in off a couple of easy home wins over Rutgers and Nebraska, but are just 21-40 ATS in their last 61 road games after playing 2 straight as a home favorite. This is also the first true road game for the Boilermakers since they won by just 5 at Maryland back on the first day of December. Michigan is better than the Terps and are 7-1-1 ATS in their last 9 Big Ten Games and 3-0-1 ATS in their last 4 vs a team with a winning record. Give me the Wolverines +1.5!

The Lakers took out their frustration with a 132-113 rout of the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday. Their schedule was very difficult, and that’s why they lost nine straight games prior to that victory. But now they get another cupcake in the Sacramento Kings who will be in a very difficult spot tonight. The Kings will be playing the 2nd of a back-to-back and their 3rd game in 4 days after losing 100-107 at home to the short-handed Spurs last night. The Lakers should be able to take advantage tonight and blow them out of the building. The Kings are 1-6 ATS in their last seven vs. Western Conference teams. Give me the Lakers.

Play on: Indiana +1 -112 at 5Dimes

Jack’s Free Pick Tuesday: Indiana +1
The Indiana Hoosiers are improving rapidly under first-year head coach Archie Miller. They have gone 4-2 SU & 4-2 ATS in their last six games. They beat Notre Dame on a neutral, thumped Iowa by 13 at home, and won by 4 at Minnesota as 8-point underdogs here recently. I like the way this team is trending.
There’s no question that Penn State has one of its best teams in recent memory. However, the Nittany Lions are starting to get way too much respect from the books, and that’s evident in the fact that they are 1-point road favorites here. This is a Penn State team that just recently lost at home to Rider as 15-point favorites.
Indiana has won 13 of its last 16 home meetings with Penn State. The Nittany Lions are 1-10-1 ATS in their last 12 road games vs. a team with a winning home record. Penn State is 1-3-1 ATS in its last five road games this season. Bet Indiana Tuesday.

I think it's worth laying the points here for Kentucky as they get back on their home court after where they are a perfect 10-0.
I know Texas AM is expected to have a few guys back tonight, but there seems to be a problem going on. This team looked outstanding in November and now the wheels have fallen off. They have dropped 3 straight and the last two were on their home court.
Kentucky will be motivated here following a loss to Tennessee. Coach Cal will have them ready here tonight.

I will take the bait here and grab Nebraska. This is such a short price it scares me to take. This Wisconsin team is just not the same and we keep seeing more evidence every game.
Let's look at the last game where they lost @ Rutgers who is the worst team in the Big 10. Nebraska has started off league play both games on the road and now go home where they are 8-1 SU and 6-1 ATS.

Dave’s Tuesday Free Play:
1* on Butler +7
The Key: The Butler Bulldogs come in hungry for a victory tonight off two straight losses to Xavier and Seton Hall by a combined 10 points. They beat Villanova the game before, so they are clearly battle-tested right now. They are catching too many points on the road tonight against Creighton in this matchup. The Bluejays haven’t played many teams the caliber of Butler, and when they have they’ve lost to the likes of Seton Hall, Gonzaga and Baylor. Butler is 8-1 ATS after failing to cover 3 of their last 4 against the spread over the last 3 seasons. The Bulldogs are 15-6-1 ATS in their last 22 games following an ATS loss. The Bluejays are 1-11 ATS in their last 12 games following an ATS win. Take Butler.
