Between 1984 and through the 2016 season, 2.57 percent of all NFL games were decided by exactly a five-point margin. That only makes it the fourth-least common final score margin among single digits. The numbers 2 (2.56 percent), 8 (2.32 percent) and 9 (1.13 percent) are all less common, or more dead, numbers than 5.

What’s more is that wins of five points appear far more often since the NFL moved the extra-point attempt back to the 15-yard line in 2015. We’ve seen 40 games decided by exactly five points since then, which is five percent of games and nearly double the percentage we saw with this margin previously. We also saw 16 of them this past season, or in 6.1 percent of games.

(That’s astonishing when you consider that 7 is the most common margin of victory in the NFL with 7.17 percent of games finishing on this number from 1984 to the start of 2017.)

The change to more five-point win margins comes from the result of more missed extra-point attempts, which has also led to more two-point attempts after a touchdown. Teams haven’t averaged better than 94.2 percent on extra-point attempts in the three seasons since the rule change, compared to 99 percent or better in eight of the nine seasons previous to that.

It all means oddsmakers have to treat the number 5 a little more seriously than they did previously and bettors would be wise to do the same. It’s worth shopping around when the spread hovers around this number whereas before 2015, many recreational bettors wouldn’t have given this line a second thought.

Eagles Bettors Should be Happy that Gene Steratore is Working


Steratore was assigned the Super Bowl last week and brings 15 years of officiating experience into the game (12 years as referee) and it will be his first appearance in a Super Bowl.

During the regular season, Steratore worked 15 games, with favorites going 12-3 straight up and 8-5-2 against the spread. OVERs had a slight edge in totals, going 8-6-1 in those contests. He worked two Pats games (Week 7 vs the Falcons, Week 13 at Buffalo) and one Eagles game (Week 9 vs the Broncos) with the two Super Bowl LII participants winning and covering the spread.

As far as his playoff career is concerned, this will be his 10th game as referee. So far, underdogs have made out quite well, going 4-5 SU and 6-3 ATS.

Perhaps more interestingly, though, is the Eagles’ success with Steratore working their games. The Eagles have played 13 games since 2007 with Steratore and have gone 10-3 SU and 9-4 ATS. A more recent sample size reveals a five-game SU winning streak (4-1 ATS) and a mark of 9-1 SU since December 7, 2008.

This referee data here goes back to 2012 and the Eagles’ 5-1 SU record in Steratore games is tied for the best among NFL referees (with at least five games worked) with Clete Blakeman. As far as the spread goes, Philly’s 4-2 ATS record ranks fourth behind Ed Hochuli’s 6-1 ATS, Blakeman’s 5-1 ATS and Walt Coleman’s 5-2 ATS records.

As far as the Pats are concerned, there isn’t too much that pops off the page. The Pats have a SU winning percentage of 79.0 since the start of 2007 (regular season only) and an ATS winning percentage of 60.9. In Steratore’s games, the SU percentage dips a little to 73.3 (11-4 SU) while the ATS percentage drops to 57.1 (8-6 ATS with one push).

Childs said it took about 30 minutes Sunday night to move from 6.5 to 6. The line dropped to 5.5 early Monday morning.

“While we started to see some Patriots money at -5.5, it wasn't nearly enough, as we continued to see more money on the Eagles at that price. On Monday evening, we got to Pats -5, which is our current number. At 5, we're seeing some real nice two-way action, and I believe we'll be holding at 5 for a good while.”


It’s not just pointspread betting drawing concern at Sportsbook.ag. Childs said major moneyline liability is building up on the underdog Eagles.

“We're seeing tons of Eagles money, from the opener of +185 to what we're currently dealing, +170,” Childs said. “We're seeing a good 2/1 ratio of Eagles moneyline, and since all that money is at a plus payout, our liability has gotten a bit out of hand. At this point, I believe we'll go lower on this moneyline as we get closer to game day, but for now, we're going to hold tight at -200/+170.

“One thing we've seen and expect to see more of as we get closer to game day is that, while the amount of tickets is very much in favor of the Eagles, the bigger wagers have been laying the big lumber on the Pats moneyline.”

Nearly three times more money had been bet on Philadelphia on the point spread than had been wagered on the Patriots at Caesars Palace sportsbooks.

The Westgate SuperBook was also lopsided toward Philly, with 79 percent of the early money on the Eagles plus the points.

The Golden Nugget, however, was more balanced and was one the few books that was still offering New England -5 as of Monday morning. "We like the number (-5), and nobody's making us move," Golden Nugget sportsbook manager Aaron Kessler said on a social media message.

Avello hasn't moved the spread despite the action. He's been at -4.5 since Friday after opening -6.5 following the championship games. He also hasn't moved the total off 48 since then. However, he did move the Patriots money-line up to -185/+165.

Despite the Patriots money, things still aren't even yet.

"We're still high on the Eagles right now, but's it's evening out," Avello said.

The Patriots money is encouraging, but Avello is working his 31st Super Bowl behind the counter in Las Vegas and never assumes or expects anything.

"We've got 90% of our action still to come and I can't begin to tell you who we'll need by the time this game kicks off," he said. "I just don't know yet, I could be $2 million high on the Pats by then."

The clientele at Wynn is completely different from the average visitor staying throughout town. Some of these guys flow into town with a few million to get some thrills with and most of the time they don't even care what the number is when betting. These guys were laying -4.5 when they could have laid -4 at multiple bet shops. They did, however, get the best of the money-line. Several books were showing -180.


So what can we expect in the next 36 hours? Has the lowest number flat-lined at -4? Will we see sharper action jump in now on the Pats as it could be the lowest it'll get?
