FLYING MAGIC SONG - Was in a $15,000 Claiming race at Sam Houston in the last race. That affair had a class figure of 78 and she is moving down in this race. A certain serious competitor. This filly faced open company last time out. Moving into a restricted state bred today. Is well worth a look. PP lines show this thoroughbred with 3 improving speed ratings. Singh should be on a live one in this race. GRETA'S SERENADE - Taking a trip down the ladder based on class; has the class ability to make her presence felt. This mare has been training well, and the recent bullet work says she's primed for a big race today. Comes out of a last event against 'open' company on Nov 10th and faces what I believe are easier 'state breds' today. Just check out her recent speed fig, 70. That one fits in this group.

My Tuesday night comp play will be Rhode Island as the road favorite at La Salle this Tuesday night.

The Rams should find the conference road a little more to their liking tonight in Philadelphia, as their last contest on the road at St. Bonaventure saw their 16-game straight up winning streak halted by the Bonnies.

The Explorers have little hope at playing in the postseason beyond the conference tourney, as they stand at just 11-16 on the season. This will be the second meeting of the regular season between the conference rivals, and the first was a URI 12-point win and cover as the -11 point home favorite. The Rams have owned the Explorers to a tune of 6-1 straight up the past 7 showdowns, and 5-2 against the spread in those 7 games.

Expect Dan Hurley's team to start a new win streak tonight against the lowly Explorers who are just 7-19 on the season against the spread. Rhode Island has covered in 11 of their last 15 games this year, and that includes the first go-round at home versus La Salle.

No upset tonight, Rams to ram the Explorers. Lay it!

My free play is on the LSU Tigers vs. the Vanderbilt Commodores, in SEC play.

Coming off a momentous, last minute 64-63 win over Missouri on Saturday, I have to believe the Tigers are looking to carry the momentum into tonight's game against Vanderbilt.

The crowd was rowdy at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on Saturday, and it should be rockin tonight, as LSU looks to make it five home straight Baton Rouge wins.

The Tigers are in must-win mode at this point, as they enter the last two weeks of the season at 15-11 and 6-8 in the Southeastern Conference play, tied for ninth with Georgia and Ole Miss. The Tigers are two games out of the four-way tie for third place, yet get this, they're also a mere two games out of 14th place.

LSU needs just one win to guarantee a winning record for the regular season with 16 wins, after winning just two games a year ago.

Vanderbilt, on the other hand, is 11-16 and tied with South Carolina for 12th in the league. And since Vandy won the first meeting, 77-71, on Jan. 20 in Nashville, I think revenge is also a factor.

Lots of motivation for the Tigers tonight.

Defense a better barometer for ATS success in college basketball

The Virginia Cavaliers owe their 17-5-1 ATS record, and top spot in the AP poll, to their unrivaled defense this season. The Cavaliers allow 4.4 fewer points per game than any other team in the country.

The best defense is a good offense or so the saying goes in sports - although the Oklahoma Sooners are putting that theory to test.

The Sooners are first in the nation in points per game (87.5) and their freshman point guard Trae Young leads the country in scoring and assists. And yet Oklahoma is one of the worst bets in college basketball with an ugly 9-17 ATS record heading into Monday’s matchup with Kansas.

The Sooners are 0-5 straight up in their last five games and 1-10 against the spread in their last 11 games after an outright loss at home to Texas on Saturday as 6.5-point favorites. OU fans downplaying their team’s poor run would fit perfectly in a meme featuring a house fire and a talking dog seating at the kitchen table claiming everything is fine.

Meanwhile, Virginia, the best defensive team in college hoops, is first in the AP Poll rankings and is covering the spread at a 77 percent rate. The Cavaliers aren’t the only D-orientated team making money for their backers this season. Michigan, Texas Tech and Cincinnati are a combined 43-30-2 ATS and all near locks to receive invites to the NCAA Tournament.

Looking at the top 10 in offense and defense in college basketball in each of the last five seasons we found the slight wagering edge goes to elite defenses over high-quality offenses. Top-10 defensive teams in points per game are covering the spread in 55.2 percent of their games since the beginning of the 2012-2013 campaign whereas top-offenses own a 53.7 percent ATS win rate.

“There’s a high variance in 3-point shooting which makes it difficult to predict from a game-to-game basis,” Covers Expert Steve Merril says. “I prefer to lean on slow-paced defensive teams like Virginia rather than the up-tempo, 3-point shooting teams like North Carolina and Duke."

The strategy shouldn’t be followed on the way to the futures book. Eight of the last 10 national champions have ranked inside Ken Pomerory’s adjusted offensive efficiency. North Carolina won last season with the ninth highest-scoring offense and the 127th ranked defense in points allowed per game.

Teams like Virginia might be better for regular season betting but come tournament time it’s important to identify sides that can score against solid defensive teams.

The Tampa Bay Lightning no longer are atop the NHL in points and their lead in the Atlantic Division is in jeopardy as they begin a three-game road trip Tuesday against the Washington Capitals. The Lightning have dropped three of their last four games and three straight on the road as their defense continues to surrender goals, averaging 3.4 allowed per game this month.

Tampa Bay recorded 51 shots in Saturday’s 4-3 loss to New Jersey but gave up a short-handed goal and three others on miscues to see its lead over Boston in the Atlantic shrink to one point. “It was just not making the right reads at the right time,” Lightning captain Steven Stamkos told reporters after the setback. “Bad changes. Bad pinches. Bad defensive-zone coverage. When we did make a mistake, they capitalized on it.” The Capitals gave up their lead in the Metropolitan Division to Pittsburgh with a 7-1 loss at Chicago on Saturday but regained the top spot with a 3-2 victory at Buffalo two days later. Captain Alex Ovechkin scored his league-leading 35th goal in Monday’s win and has recorded 42 - and 84 points - in 65 career games against Tampa Bay, which has lost five straight at Washington.

I'm recommending laying the big number here with the Bears at home against the Catamounts. These two teams are headed in different directions. Mercer has won and covered 5 straight, while Western Carolina has dropped 3 in a row, all by double-digits.
A major factor here is just how much better the Bears are at home compared to on the road. Mercer is 10-3 at home compared to just 5-10 on the road. The Bears are outscoring opponents by almost 17 ppg at home. The Catamounts are just 5-12 away from home, where they are getting outscored by nearly 14 ppg.
Western Carolina is also a mere 8-20 ATS in their last 28 as a road dog of 10 or more points and just 2-11 ATS in their last 13 road games off a double-digit home loss. Take Mercer!

The Baylor Bears were dead in the water a few weeks ago when they were sitting at 12-10 after a 2-8 stretch with several close losses along the way. But instead of packing it in, the Bears have dug deep to go 5-0 SU & 5-0 ATS in their last five games overall.
The Bears are now on the bubble of the NCAA Tournament with more work to do. This stretch has included a 16-point home win over Kansas and a win over Texas Tech, the top two teams in the Big 12. They also beat Iowa State by 14 at home, and upset both Texas and Oklahoma State on the road.
Now they get to host a West Virginia team that is down and out right now. The Mountaineers blew a big lead late at Kansas over the weekend, and that loss sealed their fate and made it so that they are assured not to win the Big 12 this year. I think they’ll suffer a hangover from that defeat.
Baylor wants revenge from a 54-57 loss at West Virginia in their first meeting this season, adding to their motivation. Baylor is 6-0 ATS off a conference home win this season. West Virginia is 2-10 ATS in road games off three straight conference games over the last two years. The Bears are 6-0 ATS in their last six games vs. a team with a winning record. Even though The Citadel is one of the fastest paced teams in college basketball they don’t score as much as they should because of an inefficient offense that averages just 1.024 points per possession (233rd) and an EFG% offense that is 251st. Plus the Citadel will have a tough time scoring here against an ETSU defense that is one of the best statistically in the nation. I'm recommending a play on New Mexico plus the points on Tuesday. The Lobos won this season's first meeting 75-66 as a 2 1/2 point favorite after trailing by five at the half. Most important hustle stats went the way of the Lobos, but they committed 20 turnovers, yet still won by nine. New Mexico takes care of the basketball on the road, averaging 12.2 turnovers per game. The teams have similar defensive numbers in their last five games, but UNM owns the better offensive numbers of late, including shooting 46.4 percent to 42.4 percent for Wyoming. The Lobos are also nailing 42.6 percent of their 3-pointers in their last five, while averaging over 8 steals per contest. Neither team has been fattening wallets, but Wyoming has covered just one of their last seven games and they're on a 6-28-2 ATS slide against teams with losing records. The bottom line, Wyoming is often overvalued against sub-.500 teams and our power ratings say they're overvalued again. Recapping: These teams enjoy a similar pace, they're similar on the defensive end of late, but it's UNM that owns the better current form on the offensive end. Toledo has covered just twice in its last 11 visits to Eastern Michigan. The Rockets are off a 28-point road loss to Ball State this past Saturday. Yet they remain in great shape needing to win just once in their last four games to secure a first-round bye in the Mid-American Conference Tournament. So the Rockets are unlikley to bring a strong sense of urgency to this matchup. Eastern Michigan has won 11 of its 13 home games. The Eagles rank first in the MAC in defensive efficiency. Their zone defense can be tricky especially against opponents seeing it for the first time. That's the case here as this is the first matchup of the season between these two teams. Toledo could have problems handling James Thompson IV, who leads the MAC in rebounding and field goal percentage while averaging 15.1 points a game. The Rockets may also be minus starting guard Marreon Jackson, who is third on the team in assists and second in steals. He also is the team's best 3-point shooter. I'll gladly back the Razorbacks at home here against the Wildcats. Arkansas comes in having won 4 straight and the most recent was a 19-point (94-75) win at home over a good Texas A&M team. The Razorbacks are now 14-1 at home this season and it's going to electric tonight at Bud Walton Arena.
Kentucky comes in off a 81-71 win and cover over Alabama at home. I had the Wildcats in that contest, as that had the feeling of a must-win after they had dropped 4 straight, plus Kentucky is a much better team at home. I just don't trust this team on the road, as this is no where close to the caliber of Wildcat team that we have seen in the past under Calipari. Kentucky has lost 4 straight on the road in SEC play and all 4 have come by at least 8 points.
Arkansas isn't going to let the fact that this isn't a great Kentucky team from playing their hearts out here. The Razorbacks have lost 5 straight in the series, all by 15 or more points. It's time for Arkansas to get some revenge and make a statement here against the Wildcats at home. Give me the Razorbacks -5.5!
