#3 IS TOO (ML=7/2)
#1 A PRETTY FACE (ML=8/1)
#7 MISS BILLIE K (ML=8/1)

IS TOO - I like to wager on this handicapping theory, a thoroughbred coming back off a nice effort within the last month or so. A PRETTY FACE - Hernandez and Thomas partnered up are a horse gambler's friend. This animal could be tough in this race, especially since Hernandez rode in the last race and now should be plenty familiar with this one. MISS BILLIE K - For my money, a bullet workout is the best indicator of fitness there is. Look at that last one - 50.0. Very impressive.

Vulnerable Contenders: #12 SHAKOPEE TOWN (ML=3/1), #8 STELLA'S SURPRISE (ML=6/1), #13 FLAT OUT SASSY (ML=6/1),

SHAKOPEE TOWN - I'm predicting a less than stellar try out of her this time around. STELLA'S SURPRISE - If she goes off near the oddsmaker's morning line of 6/1, I'll have to pass. FLAT OUT SASSY - Didn't look like a winner last time out of the box. Probably won't do much running in today's race. Doubtful for this participant to make an impact with no recent success in a short distance event.

# 4 EMMY AND I 2/1

# 5 TOOMUCHISNOTENOUGH 9/5

# 3 AMBER LOUISE 5/1

I give my vote to EMMY AND I here. She has garnered quite good numbers under today's conditions and will probably fare well against this group. The average class rating alone makes this entrant a solid contender. This mare with Couton in the saddle makes her a solid contender. TOOMUCHISNOTENOUGH - She looks very good in this spot and I expect will be on the lead or close at the halfway point. Put up a competitive Equibase speed fig last time out. AMBER LOUISE - A solid 98 avg class fig may give this mare a distinct class edge against this group. One of the top win percentages between this jockey and conditioner make this mare dangerous.

# 8 FEISTY KATI 3/1

# 14 VALIANT LADY 6/1

# 12 H K'S CACTUS 20/1

FEISTY KATI has a very strong shot to take this race. Is worth considering and may be a bet - strong speed figs (66 average) at today's distance and surface recently. Look for a respectable pace improvement from this pony who enters with second time Lasix today. She has been running very well and the Equibase Speed Figures are among the best in this group of horses. VALIANT LADY - She has to be given consideration given the strong speed numbers. Could beat this group given the 62 speed figure posted in her last outing.

#5 FALLOW (ML=5/1)
#2 PEPPERMINT STICK (ML=7/2)

FALLOW - Trainer Albright moves this one down the ladder based on class rating points to face a less competitive field. Look for a good performance with this class drop. Flores rode this animal for the initial time in the last race and comes right back in today's race. This mare is in fine form, having run a strong race on March 10th, finishing third. This horse has increased her speed ratings from a fig of 29 to 48 to 55 in a row. PEPPERMINT STICK - The most dangerous animal in racing is the lone speed horse. If they let her get away early they probably won't catch her. Based on the TrackMaster data I've reviewed, this mare should run well off the layoff. Trainer Miller moves this thoroughbred down in class ranks to face a lower class of horses. Look for a strong race this time out. This horse is uppermost in earnings per race entered. She looks nice in today's race.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 MAD MEL (ML=9/5), #6 SOPHIA'S HEART (ML=3/1), #3 IMA FRAYED KNOT (ML=6/1),

MAD MEL - A rallier like this one needs a speed duel to set things up and she isn't likely to get one this time out. SOPHIA'S HEART - This horse hasn't been in the mix in either of her last two races. Not easy to play this steed this time out. Make her show you something in a short distance affair before you bet on her in a race of 6 furlongs. IMA FRAYED KNOT - 6/1 is not offering enough value for any horse in a sprint of 6 furlongs that hasn't hit the board in a sprint contest lately.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - FALLOW - Racing pattern would suggest this thoroughbred is fit for today's race. Should do well in this race.

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Detroit Tigers Preview and Predictions 03-30-2018

29th March 2018 by Gracenote
The Pittsburgh Pirates begin a new era without their MVP center fielder and No. 1 starting pitcher when they visit the Detroit Tigers on Friday to start a three-game interleague series, which was delayed 24 hours by rain. Perennial All-Star center fielder Andrew McCutchen was dealt to San Francisco while fire-balling right-hander Gerrit Cole was sent to Houston in the offseason as Pittsburgh hopes to retool quickly after two seasons without a playoff game.

"We've got young guys that are scratching, knocking on the door of their primes," Pirates 25-year-old first baseman Josh Bell, who belted 26 homers last season, told the Pittsburgh Gazette. "We've got to come up and capitalize on these opportunities, not let them pass by, because then we'll end up in the same as last year - trudging forward a bit and fizzling out." Ivan Nova gets the start in the opener for the Pirates and Detroit counters with fellow right-hander Jordan Zimmermann as both hurlers look to rebound from disappointing seasons. Ron Gardenhire takes over as manager for the Tigers, who have been picked to finish last in the American League Central Division by many experts but still have former MVP first baseman Miguel Cabrera and are expecting another big season from right fielder Nicholas Castellanos (career-high 26 homers and 101 RBIs in 2017). Rookie third baseman Jeimer Candelario is also a key for Detroit after a strong spring training as he registered seven doubles and a pair of homers.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh, FS Detroit

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates RH Ivan Nova (2017: 11-14, 4.14 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Jordan Zimmermann (2017: 8-13, 6.08)

Nova came to camp 10 pounds lighter and determined to improve on an up and down season that ended with a combined record of 1-6 over 10 starts in August and September. The 31-year-old Dominican Republic native gave up a career-most 29 homers over a career-high 187 innings in 2017 and had a tough time on the road (3-12, 5.02 ERA) while going 8-2 with a 2.80 ERA at home. Cabrera is 5-for-15 with a homer against Nova, who is 0-3 with a 7.04 ERA in six games (five starts) lifetime versus the Tigers.

Zimmermann won his fewest games since 2011 last season and posted the worst ERA of his career while allowing 29 homers in 29 starts, but he told reporters he is feeling strong. "He's our go-to guy," Gardenhire told reporters. "I don't worry about (Zimmermann) because we know who he is. He's an established major league pitcher when healthy, and that's our goal, to keep him healthy." Newcomer Corey Dickerson is 6-for-10 with a homer versus Zimmermann, who is 1-3 with a 3.96 ERA in four career starts against the Pirates.

WALK-OFFS

1. Detroit DH Victor Martinez, who was limited to 107 games by cardiac issues last season, belted five homers in Grapefruit League action.

2. Pittsburgh CF Starling Marte moves to McCutchen's spot after playing just 77 games last season due to a PED suspension.

3. The Pirates won three of the four meetings in 2017 after the Tigers took the series 3-1 in 2016.

PREDICTION: Pirates 4, Tigers 3

Washington Nationals vs. Cincinnati Reds Preview and Predictions 03-30-2018

29th March 2018 by Gracenote
The Washington Nationals parted ways with manager Dusty Baker in the offseason for his lack of postseason success despite the fact he guided the club to back-to-back National League East titles and two of the four most successful seasons in club history. Following Thursday's Opening Day postponement, Dave Martinez will take his first step toward achieving what his predecessor was unable to do Friday when the Nationals open with the first of three games against the host Cincinnati Reds.

Baker led his club to a 192-132 regular-season record during his two-year stint with Washington, but the Nationals fell in five games during the NL Division Series to Los Angeles Dodgers in 2016 and to the Chicago Cubs in 2017. Rather than opt for another experienced hand to take the club to the next level, Washington turned to Martinez, who will run a team for the first time after serving as a bench coach the last 10 seasons - all under Joe Maddon, including the last three with the Cubs. The Reds have posted consecutive 68-win campaigns and are coming off their third straight last-place finish in the NL Central, thanks largely to a pitching staff that has ranked 26th or worse in ERA each time over that span. Those woes were really magnified last season against Washington, which outscored Cincinnati 61-26 while winning six of the seven meetings.

TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, MASN 2 (Washington), FSN Ohio (Cincinnati)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals RH Max Scherzer (2017: 16-6, 2.51 ERA) vs. Reds RH Homer Bailey (6-9, 6.43)

Scherzer posted a sub-3.00 ERA, sub-1.00 WHIP and at least 250 strikeouts for the third time in as many seasons since signing with Washington in 2015. The back-to-back NL Cy Young Award winner is coming off an uneven spring, allowing 12 runs - including six homers - in 26 innings despite holding hitters to a .183 average and finishing with a 0.77 WHIP. Scherzer fanned 10 over six scoreless innings to get the win in his only start versus the Reds last season, improving to 2-1 with a 2.55 ERA in four starts against them.

Bailey will make his first Opening Day start at home and appears to be healthy after battling forearm and elbow injuries over the last three seasons, limiting him to 26 starts over that span. The 31-year-old didn't inspire a great deal of confidence during the exhibition season, however, going 0-2 with a 7.50 ERA in five turns while allowing seven homers in 18 frames. Bailey coughed up 16 runs in 5 2/3 innings while losing both his starts to the Nationals last season.

WALK-OFFS

1. Washington OF Bryce Harper went 12-for-29 with three home runs against Cincinnati last season.

2. Reds 1B Joey Votto, the 2017 NL MVP runner-up, managed only three singles in 22 at-bats against the Nationals in 2017.

3. Washington three-time All-Star 2B Daniel Murphy is expected to be out until at least mid-April as he continues his recovery from October microfracture knee surgery.

PREDICTION: Nationals 6, Reds 2

New York Yankees vs. Toronto Blue Jays Preview and Predictions 03-30-2018

29th March 2018 by Gracenote
Giancarlo Stanton lived up to the hype and then some in his New York Yankees debut, needing only two pitches to show he won't have much trouble making the transition to the American League. Stanton will have a tough act to follow as the Yankees attempt to build on their first Opening Day win since 2011 when they continue a four-game series Friday at the Toronto Blue Jays.

Stanton, who led the majors with 59 home runs with the Miami Marlins in 2017, went deep on the second pitch he saw and also homered in the ninth to cap a 3-for-5 day with four RBIs and punctuate New York's 6-1 victory. "Wow," said Yankees slugger and reigning AL home run champ Aaron Judge in marveling at the display by Stanton that pushed his career numbers at Rogers Centre to a staggering 9-for-16 with five blasts in four career games. Toronto already has plenty to worry about aside from the offensive futility that produced two hits -- third baseman Josh Donaldson bounced a number of throws to first base, which manager John Gibbons attributed to a dead arm. "I've been feeling it a little bit all spring," Donaldson said. "I don't have any pain or anything like that, which is always good. It's just about getting the strength back."

TV: 7:07 p.m. ET, MLB Network, YES (New York), Sportsnet, TVAS (Toronto)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees RH Masahiro Tanaka (2017: 13-12, 4.74 ERA) vs. Blue Jays RH Aaron Sanchez (2017: 1-3, 4.25)

Although he won at least 12 games for the fourth straight season, Tanaka spent too much of 2017 looking over his shoulder as he surrendered 35 home runs. However, he closed the year on a high note, allowing two runs and zero homers over his last four turns, including the postseason. One of those was a 15-strikeout, three-hit masterpiece against the Blue Jays on Sept. 29 after he allowed eight runs in Toronto one week earlier.

Sanchez had a sensational 2016 season, compiling a 15-2 mark and 3.00 ERA, but he won only once last year as recurring blister issues limited him to only eight starts. The 25-year-old Californian did not have any such issues with blisters in spring training and closed out the preseason by permitting one run and two hits over 6 1/3 innings versus Atlanta. Sanchez made three starts against New York in 2016, going 1-0 with a 1.83 ERA.

WALK-OFFS

1. Stanton joined Roger Maris (1960) as the only players with multiple homers in their first game with the Yankees.

2. The Blue Jays placed SS Troy Tulowitzki (heel bone spurs) on the 60-day disabled list.

3. New York's bullpen allowed one run on one hit while recording five strikeouts and zero walks in 3 1/3 innings.

PREDICTION: Yankees 5, Blue Jays 2

Boston Red Sox vs. Tampa Bay Rays Preview and Predictions 03-30-2018

29th March 2018 by Gracenote
Denard Span grew up in Tampa Bay and his first game with his hometown team turned out to be among the more memorable moments of his career. Span overcame an early wobble of his own in the season opener to deliver the big hit in a 6-4 victory for the Tampa Bay Rays, who look to make it two in a row over the Boston Red Sox on Friday night.

Span hesitated on a fly ball that led to a two-run inside-the-park homer by Boston's Eduardo Nunez, but his bases-loaded triple was the big blow in a six-run eighth inning that put the Rays ahead to stay. "Just a true blessing to be able to play in front of my family and friends and to help this ball club win, can't ask for anything better," said Span, who was acquired from San Francisco for Evan Longoria in the offseason. "In all my 9 1/2, 10 years, that was probably the best postgame celebration of any team I've been on." It was a stunning loss by the Red Sox, who wasted six scoreless innings of one-hit ball by ace Chris Sale before relievers Joe Kelly and Carson Smith combined to allow six runs in the eighth to spoil the managerial debut of Alex Cora. "At the end of the day, that's pretty pathetic what I did," Kelly said after walking three batters. "Can't do that. I don't think I've ever done it and it's probably going to be the last time."

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, NESN (Boston), FSN Sun (Tampa Bay)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox LH David Price (2017: 6-3, 3.38 ERA) vs. Rays LH Blake Snell (2017: 5-7, 4.04)

Price made only 16 appearances (11 starts) during an injury-riddled season that included multiple trips to the disabled list due to an ailing left elbow. Price has plenty of familiarity with Tampa Bay, winning 82 games in his first six-plus seasons with the franchise and posting a 36-30 record and 2.88 ERA at Tropicana Field. The Rays are a collective 12-for-94 with one homer versus Price, who is 3-3 against his former team.

Although the record suggests a mediocre year, Snell bounced back from a disastrous start to 2017 by earning all five of his victories in his last nine starts while permitting two runs or fewer in six of them. He went 0-6 over his first 15 starts last season, including a pair of losses at Boston in which he surrendered 10 runs on 13 hits over 10 2/3 innings. Xander Bogaerts had three hits Thursday but is 0-for-9 lifetime against Snell.

WALK-OFFS

1. Red Sox DH J.D. Martinez struck out twice, walked once and scored in his Boston debut.

2. Rays RHP Alex Colome, who had 47 saves last season, earned his first with a scoreless ninth.

3. Nunez's inside-the-park homer on Opening Day was Boston's first since Carl Yastrzemski in 1968.

Chicago Cubs vs. Miami Marlins Preview and Predictions 03-30-2018

29th March 2018 by Gracenote
After belting three home runs on Opening Day, the Chicago Cubs hope to feast on a rookie pitcher when they play the host Miami Marlins in the second of a four-game series Friday. The slugging Cubs figure to make things tough on left-hander Caleb Smith, who is making his Marlins debut and just his third big-league start.

Ian Happ homered on the first pitch of the game and Anthony Rizzo and Kyle Schwarber also went deep in the Cubs' 8-4 win Thursday. Both bullpens were taxed in the opener, as Miami's Jose Urena lasted only four innings and Chicago's Jon Lester was knocked out with one out in the fourth. The Cubs' bullpen was up to the task with five relievers combining to allow just one hit and three walks over 5 2/3 scoreless innings. The youthful Marlins started four rookies, who combined to go 3-for-14 on Opening Day.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, WGN (Chicago), FS Florida (Miami)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs RH Kyle Hendricks (2017: 7-5, 3.03 ERA) vs. Marlins LH Caleb Smith (2017: 0-1, 7.71)

After leading the league with a 2.13 ERA in 2016, Hendricks regressed slightly last year but he had a 2.19 ERA in 13 starts after the All-Star break. The 28-year-old posted quality starts in 14 of his 24 outings last season, including eight of his last nine in the regular season. Hendricks has dominated the Marlins in four meetings, going 2-1 with a 1.32 ERA.

Smith was acquired from the Yankees in November and slides into the rotation in place of injured Dan Straily. The 26-year-old had an excellent campaign in the minors a year ago in which he went 9-1 with a 2.41 ERA and struck out 102 batters in 100 2/3 innings, mostly at Triple-A. Smith was 0-2 with a 5.21 ERA in two starts and four relief outings this spring.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Marlins have 12 players who appeared on an Opening Day roster for the first time in their career, including Smith.

2. After going 9-for-31 with 10 walks and seven RBIs as a pinch hitter last season, Chicago's INF Tommy La Stella came off the bench to deliver a two-run double in the seventh Thursday.

3. The Cubs had seven extra-base hits Thursday, a total they surpassed only eight times all of last season.

Philadelphia Phillies vs. Atlanta Braves Preview and Predictions 03-30-2018

29th March 2018 by Gracenote
Philadelphia Phillies manager Gabe Kapler plans to lighten the load of the starting rotation by leaning heavily on his relievers this season. After seeing his bullpen implode on Opening Day, Kapler will hand the ball to right-hander Nick Pivetta on Friday in a bid to even the three-game series against the Atlanta Braves at SunTrust Park.

Freddie Freeman opened the floodgates with a two-run homer, Ozhaino Albies added a solo shot and Nick Markakis provided the final salvo with a walk-off, three-run blast in the ninth inning of Atlanta's 8-5 triumph on Thursday. Freeman belted 28 homers during an injury-ravaged campaign in 2017 for the Braves, who were battered to the tune of a 6-13 mark versus the Phillies last season. Philadelphia appeared poised to continue its mastery of its National League East rival as Cesar Hernandez homered in his second straight Opening Day appearance, but Kapler raised eyebrows by lifting starter Aaron Nola in the bottom of the sixth inning after just 68 pitches with a commanding 5-0 lead. The new manager also caused a stir by leaving Odubel Herrera out of the starting lineup for what he deemed as a matchup-based decision, but the latter is expected to draw in on Friday and face Braves starter Mike Foltynewicz.

TV: 7:35 p.m. ET, NBCS Philadelphia-Plus, FS South (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Nick Pivetta (2017: 8-10, 6.02 ERA) vs. Braves RH Mike Foltynewicz (2017: 10-13, 4.79)

Pivetta took his lumps last season with 25 homers and 144 hits allowed in 133.0 innings while seeing his WHIP climb to a gaudy 1.51. A postive for the 25-year-old British Columbian came in the form of his 140 strikeouts, with 13 coming as he limited the Braves to a .226 batting average en route to winning all three of his starts versus the club last season. Two of the starts were played in Atlanta, including a six-inning scoreless stint in his penultimate outing of the campaign.

Foltynewicz is hoping his strong spring washes the taste out of his mouth after he posted a 6.34 ERA following the All-Star break in 2017. The 26-year-old spent the offseason focusing his attention on his mechanics and pitched exclusively out of the stretch in the spring. Foltynewicz split a pair of outings against the Phillies last season and owns a 3-2 mark in seven career encounters, with Maikel Franco (.333) and Herrera (.313) faring well against him while going deep on one occasion.

WALK-OFFS

1. Philadelphia optioned 2015 NL Cy Young Award winner RHP Jake Arrieta to Advanced Class-A Clearwater on Thursday as he continues to round into shape for his expected first appearance on April 8.

2. Braves CF Ender Inciarte, who is 4-for-7 in his career versus Pivetta, batted .354 against the Phillies last season.

3. Atlanta's Kurt Suzuki is expected to get the start on Friday after relieving fellow C Tyler Flowers, who exited the season opener with left oblique discomfort.

Houston Astros vs. Texas Rangers Preview and Predictions 03-30-2018

29th March 2018 by Gracenote
The Texas Rangers have typically had their way with their Silver Boot Series rival - especially at home - over the course of time, but the Houston Astros have left little doubt recently which team holds the edge at the moment. The Astros eye a sixth straight victory in Globe Life Park on Friday when they continue a four-game set against the host Rangers.

Justin Verlander worked six scoreless innings while George Springer and Jake Marisnick clubbed solo homers en route to a 4-1 win on Opening Day against Texas. Houston has been even more dominant at Globe Life Park since the start of last season, outscoring the Rangers 70-31 while taking eight of the last 10 meetings at the venue after dropping 32 of the previous 41 in Arlington. Elvis Andrus and Adrian Beltre each had two hits in a losing cause for Texas, which went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and managed its only run on a wild pitch. The Rangers have suffered five straight defeats overall to their in-state rival and haven't won any of their previous three season-opening series under fourth-year manager Jeff Banister.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet Southwest (Houston), FSN Southwest (Texas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros LH Dallas Keuchel (2017: 14-5, 2.90 ERA) vs. Rangers RH Doug Fister (2017: 5-9, 4.88)

Keuchel recaptured the form last season that allowed him to claim the American League Cy Young Award in 2015, keeping his ERA below 3.00 and WHIP under 1.20 for the third time in four seasons after struggling in 2016. The 30-year-old, who drew the Opening Day nod for the team over each of the previous three years, is 40-24 with a 3.29 ERA in 89 career games (82 starts) prior to the All-Star break. Keuchel mostly had his way with the Rangers last season, going 3-1 with a 2.92 ERA in four turns.

Fister signed with Texas in late November after logging 18 games (15 starts) with the Boston Red Sox last season, going 5-2 with a 2.79 ERA for a seven-game stretch before finishing 0-2, 9.18 over his final four appearances. The Fresno State product will be joining his fifth team in six seasons, including a one-year stint with the Astros in 2016 during which he finished 12-13 with a 4.64 ERA. Fister dropped his only start against Houston last season, giving up three runs across 5 1/3 frames.

WALK-OFFS

1. Springer became the first player in major-league history with leadoff homers in consecutive season openers with his leadoff blast Thursday - the 100th home run of his career.

2. Andrus made his 10th consecutive Opening Day start Thursday, one shy of matching the club record held by Ivan Rodriguez and Michael Young.

3. Houston placed 1B Yuli Gurriel on the restricted list prior to the opener to start the clock on his five-game suspension, allowing for the possibility he could return as early as Tuesday if he doesn't need to go on the disabled list following February hand surgery.

Colorado Rockies vs. Arizona Diamondbacks Preview and Predictions 03-30-2018

30th March 2018 by Gracenote
The Arizona Diamondbacks were in fine form at the plate in their season opener and hope to continue swinging hot bats when they resume their three-game series against the visiting Colorado Rockies on Friday. Arizona pounded out 12 hits and put together a pair of three-run innings Thursday en route to an 8-2 victory.

Jake Lamb, who recorded a career-high 105 RBIs last season, got off to a good start as he drove in four runs and David Peralta went 3-for-5 with an RBI, but Paul Goldschmidt remains in search of his first hit of the year after going 0-for-2 with three walks. Colorado scored both of its runs on homers as DJ LeMahieu and Nolan Arenado both went deep. The 26-year-old Arenado is seeking his fourth consecutive season with at least 37 home runs and 130 RBIs. Chris Iannetta, who is in his second stint with the Rockies after spending last year in Arizona, made an impressive return to the team with which he began his career as he collected one-third of the club's nine hits in the opener.

TV: 9:40 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet-Rocky Mountain (Colorado), FS Arizona Plus

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies LH Tyler Anderson (2017: 6-6, 4.81 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks LH Robbie Ray (2017: 15-5, 2.89)

Anderson's 2017 season was interrupted by left knee surgery, but he finished strong upon his return, going 3-1 with a 1.19 ERA in four appearances (three starts). The 28-year-old native of Las Vegas was especially impressive in the victories as he struck out 12 batters and walked only two while scattering seven hits over 17 scoreless innings. Anderson has yet to lose to Arizona, going 2-0 with a 4.85 ERA and 34 strikeouts over 26 frames in six career games (four starts).

Ray registered more victories last year than in his first three major-league seasons combined (14) and led the National League with a rate of 12.11 strikeouts per nine innings while limiting opponents to a .199 batting average. The 26-year-old Tennessean suffered his last loss of the campaign on July 23, going 6-0 with a 2.20 ERA over his final nine starts. Ray owns a 2-3 record and 5.21 ERA in nine career turns against the Rockies.

WALK-OFFS

1. Diamondbacks OF Jarrod Dyson had an impressive debut for his new team on Thursday, going 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI.

2. Colorado OF Charlie Blackmon is a .519 career hitter with three homers and eight RBIs against Ray.

3. Arizona RHP Zack Greinke (groin) will start the series finale on Saturday.

Los Angeles Angels vs. Oakland Athletics Preview and Predictions 03-30-2018

29th March 2018 by Gracenote
After working overtime on Opening Day, the visiting Los Angeles Angels and the Oakland Athletics hook up for the encore Friday. The Athletics claimed a walk-off win in the 11th inning Thursday and send Sean Manaea to the mound opposite fellow left-hander Tyler Skaggs to try to make it two in a row against their American League West rivals.

Marcus Semien went 3-for-5 and drove in the winning run in the 11th while Khris Davis and Matt Olson hit back-to-back homers in the Athletics' 6-5 win Thursday. Zack Cozart and Kole Calhoun each homered among three hits and Albert Pujols also went deep for the Angels in the opener, but stars Mike Trout and Justin Upton were a combined 0-for-11. Japanese star Shohei Ohtani singled on the first pitch he saw in his major-league debut but finished 1-for-5 with a strikeout. Four Oakland relievers combined for six scoreless innings, and Los Angeles used six relievers, so both teams could use deep outings from their starters.

TV: 10:05 p.m. ET, FS West (Los Angeles), NBCS Bay Area (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels LH Tyler Skaggs (2017: 2-6, 4.55 ERA) vs. Athletics LH Sean Manaea (2017: 12-10, 4.37)

Skaggs has yet to make it through a full season in the majors without injury concerns, but his 16 starts last year were his most since making 18 in 2014. The 26-year-old had only one win in 11 starts after returning from the disabled list last August. Skaggs has never beaten the Athletics - he's 0-4 with a 6.26 ERA in five career meetings.

Manaea had a good spring, going 1-0 with a 2.53 ERA in 10 2/3 innings as he looks to build off a solid showing in his first full season in the majors. The 26-year-old is tough on lefties, who have hit just .207 against him in his career, and has been good at home, where he is 11-6 with a 3.55 ERA in 27 games (26 starts). The Angels have roughed him up, though, as he's 1-2 with a 5.10 ERA in six career meetings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Davis is 4-for-6 with two doubles and a homer against Skaggs.

2. Trout is 5-for-11 with a triple and two homers and Calhoun is 4-for-13 with two doubles versus Manaea.

3. Angels 2B Ian Kinsler sat out the opener with a groin injury but is expected to make his Los Angeles debut Friday.

Milwaukee Brewers vs. San Diego Padres Preview and Predictions 03-30-2018

29th March 2018 by Gracenote
The San Diego Padres' youth movement takes another step forward Friday, with 24-year-old left-hander Joey Lucchesi set to make his major-league debut against the visiting Milwaukee Brewers. The teams needed extra innings to decide Thursday's season opener, as Orlando Arcia's RBI single in the 12th proved to be the difference in the Brewers' 2-1 victory.

Lucchesi is taking the spot of expected starter Dinelson Lamet, who will miss at least a month with a flexor strain in his right elbow. The Padres haven't reached the postseason since winning the National League West in 2006 but boast one of the top farm systems in the baseball with Lucchesi part of a group that includes top prospects such as shortstop Fernando Tatis, Jr., outfielder Franchy Cordero and infielder Luis Urias along with pitchers Cal Quantrill and MacKenzie Gore. While San Diego is pointing toward the future, Milwaukee has added outfielders Lorenzo Cain and Christian Yelich in an effort to capture the NL Central crown after finishing second last season. Cain went 3-for-5 with a stolen base while hitting leadoff in the opener while Yelich batted second and was 1-for-4 with an RBI.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, FS Wisconsin (Milwaukee), FS San Diego

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Jhoulys Chacin (2017: 13-10, 3.89 ERA) vs. Padres LH Joey Lucchesi (MLB Debut)

Chacin signed a two-year contract with Milwaukee after working 180 1/3 innings over 32 starts for San Diego last season. The 30-year-old Venezuelan should feel right at home at Petco Park, where he posted a 1.79 ERA in 16 starts last year compared to a 6.53 mark in 16 turns everywhere else. Chacin recorded a 1.84 ERA over five appearances this spring and has gone 6-2 with a 3.07 ERA in 14 career games (10 starts) against the Padres.

Lucchesi recorded a 2.20 ERA in 139 innings between Single-A Lake Elsinore and Double-A San Antonio last season and earned Friday's turn after posting a 1.54 ERA in four spring starts. "His stuff plays. There's a real deception to it. It's tough to pick up," Padres manager Andy Green told reporters. "It's a real three-pitch mix that's going to play well at the big-league level." A fourth-round selection in the 2016 draft, Lucchesi possesses an impressive curve and change-up along with a mid-90s fastball.

WALK-OFFS

1. Green said Padres RHP Luis Perdomo will start Saturday's series finale while LHP Bryan Mitchell will get the nod Monday against Colorado.

2. After struggling in spring training, Brewers RHP Jacob Barnes earned the save Thursday by striking out the side in the 12th inning.

3. The Brewers purchased the contract of 1B Ji-Man Choi from Triple-A Colorado Springs prior to Thursday's game.

San Francisco Giants vs. Los Angeles Dodgers Preview and Predictions 03-30-2018

30th March 2018 by Gracenote
Few teams needed an Opening Day win more than the San Francisco Giants, who already have placed their closer and two starting pitchers on the disabled list. The Giants continue their four-game series against the host Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday with some much-needed momentum after topping Clayton Kershaw in Thursday's 1-0 victory.

With injured starters Madison Bumgarner and Jeff Samardzija sidelined for several more weeks, the Giants opened the season by having four relievers allow a total of three hits over four frames following five strong innings from Ty Blach. Hunter Strickland recorded the save in place of closer Mark Melancon, who landed on the DL on Thursday with a right elbow flexor strain but hopes to return in a few weeks. "No question, it is disheartening to lose your No. 1 and No. 3 (starters) and your closer," manager Bruce Bochy told reporters. "Last year, we didn't do such a good job dealing with adversity. I think this team is equipped to respond in a better way." The injury bug also has hit the Dodgers, who had Kiké Hernandez batting cleanup in their first game without Justin Turner (fractured left wrist), who is expected to return in 5-7 weeks.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, NBCS Bay Area (San Francisco), KTLA, SportsNet LA (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Johnny Cueto (2017: 8-8, 4.52 ERA) vs. Dodgers LH Alex Wood (2017: 16-3, 2.72)

Cueto is looking to bounce back after battling blister and forearm issues last season while posting his worst ERA since his rookie year in 2008. The two-time All-Star worked 19 innings this spring, allowing seven runs with 19 strikeouts in five starts. Matt Kemp is 12-for-37 with three homers against Cueto, who owns a 6-8 record and 3.44 ERA in 17 career turns against Los Angeles - including a 4-5 mark and 2.67 ERA in nine outings at Dodger Stadium.

After recording 10 wins and a 1.67 ERA in the first half last season, Wood struggled with injuries and posted a 3.89 ERA in the second half. The 27-year-old was 2-1 in five spring starts, registering a 3.63 ERA with 22 strikeouts against six walks. Buster Posey is 7-for-15 against Wood, who is 2-2 with a 5.35 ERA in five career starts against the Giants - including seven solid innings during a victory in his last outing on July 28.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Giants play 17 of their first 19 games against National League West rivals.

2. Kemp has hit .279 with 24 home runs in 177 career games versus the Giants.

3. Bochy said Strickland will serve as the team's regular closer until Melancon returns.

Chicago Bulls vs. Orlando Magic Preview and Predictions 03-30-2018

30th March 2018 by Gracenote
The Chicago Bulls have recorded just 24 victories all season, but three of them have come against the Orlando Magic. Chicago looks to complete a sweep of the four-game season series when it visits Orlando on Friday.

The Bulls fell to Miami 103-92 on Thursday for their seventh consecutive loss - the third time this season they have dropped at least seven in a row. Chicago will be without its starting backcourt for the eighth consecutive game as shooting guard Zach LaVine (knee) and point guard Kris Dunn (toe) continue to recuperate, although it is beginning to look like Dunn might not play again this season. Orlando has dropped nine of its last 11 contests, and its next setback will ensure it will win fewer than 30 games for the fifth time in the last six seasons. The Magic are 2-4 on their seven-game homestand after losing 114-111 to Brooklyn on Wednesday.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NBCS Chicago, FS Florida (Orlando)

ABOUT THE BULLS (24-51): Lauri Markkanen (elbow) is expected to play versus Orlando after sitting out Thursday and missing seven of the team's last nine games, including five due to a back ailment. The 20-year-old power forward, who averages 14.9 points and 7.5 rebounds, said prior to Thursday's contest that he would vote himself the NBA Rookie of the Year over the two true candidates - Utah's Donovan Mitchell and Philadelphia's Ben Simmons. Markkanen could finish third in the voting and certainly has proven he will be a solid building block for a Chicago franchise that will be aiming for respectability next season.

ABOUT THE MAGIC (22-52): With Orlando having one of the worst records in the league, a good number of its fans were happy with the loss to fellow Eastern Conference doormat Brooklyn in order to better the team's chances in the 2018 draft lottery. Coach Frank Vogel said the draft order isn't an issue as the team will get a solid player whether it selects first or 10th, while power forward Aaron Gordon admits it's disappointing to see the fan reaction. "It hurts just to be in that situation," Gordon told the Orlando Sentinel. "We don't want to be in the lottery. We don't want to be known as a team that tanks, especially when we go out there and we give our all. We put our body, our mind and our soul all out there every night."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Bulls have won six of the last seven meetings between the teams.

2. Chicago reserve PF Bobby Portis matched his career high of 16 rebounds while also contributing 13 points against Miami.

3. Orlando rookie F Jonathan Isaac (foot) is expected to return after a three-game absence.

Philadelphia 76ers vs. Atlanta Hawks Preview and Predictions 03-30-2018

29th March 2018 by Gracenote
The Philadelphia 76ers remain the hottest team in the Eastern Conference, but they may be forced to try to continue their surge without All-Star center Joel Embiid when they visit the Atlanta Hawks on Friday. Embiid left Wednesday's 118-101 home win over the New York Knicks following a collision with teammate Markelle Fultz.

The 24-year-old Embiid was taken to the hospital, where it was determined he had a facial contusion but no fractures and he passed concussion tests. "I know I hit him, but I believe he is OK," Fultz told reporters. "My heart dropped. He's a tough guy. All I can do is pray for him." Dario Saric picked up the slack with 26 points and 14 rebounds for the Sixers, who won their season-high eighth straight game and remained a half-game behind third-place Cleveland in the East. They get to play two of their remaining eight games at lowly Atlanta, which dropped 10 of its last 11 after a 126-114 loss at Minnesota on Wednesday to cap a 1-5 road trip.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBCS Philadelphia, FS Southeast (Atlanta)

ABOUT THE 76ERS (44-30): Philadelphia's winning streak is its longest since a nine-gamer in 2003 and it is 19-1 at Wells Fargo Center since January began. "It's a blessing just to be a part of that," Robert Covington - who chipped in 17 points against the Knicks - told reporters. "We are still going. We have a lot of basketball to play. So it's only the beginning." Fultz was playing in his second game after sitting out the bulk of the season with a shoulder issue and he has 15 assists with one turnover in 28 minutes since his return.

ABOUT THE HAWKS (21-54): Atlanta simply wants some positives to carry into the offseason and it received one Wednesday in the play of Mike Muscala, who scored a career-high 24 points in 25 minutes off the bench. "I thought we moved it well in transition and got some good looks from 3 and everything, and guards did a good job penetrating, finding open shooters and finishing at the rim," he told the media. Isaiah Taylor is averaging 21.3 points in three starts in the past week in place of point guard Dennis Schroder, who is day-to-day with a sprained ankle.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Covington scored 22 points and Embiid added 21 in a 119-109 win over Atlanta at home earlier this season.

2. Atlanta needs to win two of its remaining seven games to avoid the franchise's second 60-loss campaign.

3. Sixers PG Ben Simmons recorded at least 10 assists in eight of his last nine games.

PREDICTION: 76ers 109, Hawks 103

Phoenix Suns vs. Houston Rockets Preview and Predictions 03-30-2018

29th March 2018 by Gracenote
The Houston Rockets are on the verge of clinching first place in the Western Conference and homecourt advantage throughout the playoffs as they rip through the second half of their schedule. The Rockets will try to push their latest winning streak to 11 straight when they host the lowly Phoenix Suns on Friday.

Houston won 27 of its last 28 games and is picking on teams at the bottom of the standings of late after cruising past the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday and blasting the Chicago Bulls 118-86 on Tuesday despite resting MVP candidate James Harden. The Rockets are trying to maintain their intensity and execution heading into the postseason despite owning a big lead and already setting the franchise record for regular-season wins. The Suns are at the opposite end of the spectrum and sit in last place in the West, 42 1/2 games behind Houston. Phoenix dropped its last 13 games as it gives young players a chance to prove they belong in the team's future.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FS Arizona (Phoenix), AT&T SportsNet Southwest (Houston)

ABOUT THE SUNS (19-57): Two players that don't need to prove they are in the team's plans for the future are Devin Booker (hand) and TJ Warren (knee), but the two have both missed the last five games and the team is in no rush to get them back on the court. Point guard Tyler Ulis is getting plenty of chances to shine and scored a season-high 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting in 37 minutes in Wednesday's 111-99 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers. Fellow guard Shaquille Harrison scored 17 points in a season-high 31 minutes off the bench in the loss.

ABOUT THE ROCKETS (61-14): Harden's absence gave Eric Gordon a chance to step back into the starting lineup, and he responded by scoring 31 points on 11-of-17 shooting, including 8-of-13 from 3-point range. Gordon is averaging 22.4 points on 53.9 shooting over the last five games after failing to reach double figures in three of the previous four contests. Point guard Chris Paul (hamstring) returned from a three-game absence on Tuesday and collected 13 points and 10 assists in 28 minutes but is day-to-day with a sore left hip.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Suns PG Elfrid Payton (knee) sat out Wednesday and did not practice on Thursday.

2. Rockets PF Luc Mbah a Moute (knee) sat out the last three games and is questionable for Friday.

3. Houston took the last seven in the series while averaging 125.6 points.

New Orleans Pelicans vs. Cleveland Cavaliers Preview and Predictions 03-30-2018

29th March 2018 by Gracenote
The Cleveland Cavaliers are coming together as the postseason approaches and get a four-game homestand to try to lock up homecourt advantage in the first round. The Cavaliers will try to pick up their seventh win in eight games when they open that homestand by hosting the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday.

Cleveland enters play on Thursday in third place in the Eastern Conference, a half-game ahead of the Philadelphia 76ers, after bouncing back from a rare loss by knocking off the Charlotte Hornets 118-105 on Wednesday. That win came without All-Star forward Kevin Love, who was placed in the concussion protocol after taking an elbow to the face during a loss at Miami on Tuesday and is day-to-day. The Pelicans are fighting for position in the Western Conference and are sitting two games ahead of the ninth-place Los Angeles Clippers but are coming off back-to-back losses to a pair of teams above them in the standings. New Orleans dropped a 107-103 decision at home to the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday while committing 16 turnovers and giving up 17 offensive rebounds.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN, FS Ohio (Cleveland)

ABOUT THE PELICANS (43-32): Anthony Davis is trying to carry New Orleans but is getting plenty of help from guard Jrue Holiday, who collected a triple-double with 21 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists in the loss to Portland. "I think every game we've played, probably for a month and a half, felt like a playoff game," Holiday told reporters. "This one just hurts a little bit because we -- well, we really want to win every game, but this one, I think, we really wanted." Holiday took on some extra ball-handling responsibilities on Tuesday with Rajon Rondo (wrist) out, and Rondo is questionable for Friday.

ABOUT THE CAVALIERS (45-30): LeBron James continues to make history and is on the verge of passing Michael Jordan in consecutive double-digit scoring efforts. James scored 41 points in Wednesday's win to tie Jordan's record at 866 straight games. "I can't even tell you how I've been able to do it," James told reporters. "It's not like I go into every game saying, 'OK, I've got to get 10 points.' It's just kind of organic. It happens, and anytime I'm mentioned with some of the greats, and arguably the greatest basketball player of all time in Mike, it's just another feat for me to be appreciative and humbled by what I've been able to do."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Cavaliers PG George Hill is 6-of-19 from the floor over the last two games after combining to go 19-of-27 in the previous three.

2. Pelicans PF Nikola Mirotic is shooting 29 percent from the floor, including 20.5 percent from 3-point range, over his last 10 games.

3. New Orleans took the first meeting 123-101 at home on Oct. 28.

Denver Nuggets vs. Oklahoma City Thunder Preview and Predictions 03-30-2018

30th March 2018 by Gracenote
The Denver Nuggets are facing an uphill climb in their pursuit of a Western Conference playoff spot as they enter Friday's road contest against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Denver sits two games behind eighth-place Utah, with the Los Angeles Clippers sandwiched in between, after losing four of its last six contests.

The Nuggets suffered a 114-110 loss in Toronto on Tuesday, and coach Michael Malone was highly disappointed with his squad's lack of urgency. "We have seven games to go," Malone told reporters. "Every (darn) play matters, and right now, we're not playing like every play matters. We're playing like we have 30 games to go in the season, and I can't explain that. It's unacceptable." Oklahoma City dropped a 103-99 decision to San Antonio on Thursday and is tied for fourth place with the Spurs, who own the tiebreaker. Thunder star Russell Westbrook recorded 19 points and 11 rebounds but also committed seven turnovers and missed two late 3-point attempts, including an untimely air-ball.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, Altitude (Denver), FS Oklahoma

ABOUT THE NUGGETS (40-35): Denver is 2-4 on its six-game road trip and will finish it the way it started - without the services of shooting guard Gary Harris. The 23-year-old will miss his seventh straight contest due to the knee injury he suffered on March 15, and the Nuggets badly miss his ability to stretch defenses - as well as his 17.7 point average, which puts him second on the club behind Nikola Jokic (17.8). Denver received a strong performance from Jokic (29 points, 16 rebounds, eight assists) against Toronto, and he has scored 20 or more points in eight of his last 11 contests.

ABOUT THE THUNDER (44-32): All-Star Paul George had a stellar game against the Spurs with 26 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals. It was a much-needed performance for the 27-year-old after he averaged 14 points on 7-of-31 shooting - including missing all 13 3-point attempts - over his previous two contests. Meanwhile, Westbrook averaged 29 points, 10.5 rebounds and 9.5 assists over his previous four games before struggling through a lackluster 7-of-19 shooting effort against the Spurs.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Nuggets are 2-1 against the Thunder this season but dropped a 95-94 decision at Oklahoma City on Dec. 18.

2. Oklahoma City PF Carmelo Anthony is averaging just seven points on 8-of-27 shooting over his last three contests.

3. Denver PF Paul Millsap is averaging 18 points on 14-of-22 shooting over his last two games after scoring just two against Washington on March 23.

PREDICTION: Thunder 105, Nuggets 102

Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Dallas Mavericks Preview and Predictions 03-30-2018

29th March 2018 by Gracenote
Karl-Anthony Towns seeks an encore performance as he leads the Minnesota Timberwolves into a matchup at the Dallas Mavericks on Friday. Towns erupted for a franchise-record 56 points to go along with 15 rebounds and four assists in a much-needed 126-114 win over Atlanta at home Wednesday night.

The effort allowed the Timberwolves to snap an ill-timed two-game slide and stay in seventh place in the Western Conference, 1 1/2 games up on the ninth-place Los Angeles Clippers. "I just realized the ball kept coming to me more and more often," Towns told reporters after also setting a career high with his 63rd double-double. "I guess that was a sign to shoot the ball. Everyone just kept telling me, 'You need six more, you need eight more, for 50.' I wasn't really thinking about that. I was just trying to find a way to win." Minnesota plays its remaining six games against teams below it in the West standings, beginning with a Mavericks squad that has dropped six of its last seven. Dallas shot 39.3 percent from the field overall and managed only 12 points in the fourth quarter of a 103-93 loss at the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, FS North (Minnesota), FS Southwest Plus (Dallas)

ABOUT THE TIMBERWOLVES (43-33): Towns was 19-of-32 from the field, 6-of-8 from 3-point range and 12-of-15 from the foul line as he eclipsed the team's previous scoring high of 52 points set by Mo Williams in 2015. "He was all over the place, rebounding, scoring, dominating the game," teammate Andrew Wiggins told reporters. "They couldn't do nothing with him. He played amazing. Dominant performance. Special performance." Towns averages 24.7 points on 60.5 percent shooting to go along with 11.7 rebounds in three wins over Dallas this season.

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (23-52): Coach Rick Carlisle is utilizing his entire roster when he can and nine players saw between 20 and 26 minutes of action against the Lakers. Rookie star Dennis Smith Jr. finished with 14 points, eight assists and one turnover in 22 minutes after going for 19 points and six assists in 25 minutes in a win at Sacramento the previous night. Dirk Nowitzki averaged 4.3 points on 6-of-24 shooting over his previous three contests before recording 13 points on 4-of-7 on Wednesday.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Wiggins was held below 20 points for the fourth straight time against Atlanta after scoring 20 or more in nine of his previous 11 games.

2. Mavericks PG J.J. Barea missed the last two games due to personal reasons.

3. Minnesota won each of the last four meetings.

PREDICTION: Timberwolves 112, Mavericks 105

Memphis Grizzlies vs. Utah Jazz Preview and Predictions 03-30-2018

29th March 2018 by Gracenote
The Utah Jazz are fighting to stay in the top eight of the Western Conference and can't afford to drop another game to a team well out of the playoff race. The Jazz will try to avoid dropping back-to-back games for the first time since mid-January when they host the lowly Memphis Grizzlies on Friday.

Utah, which had a nine-game winning streak come to an end with a home loss to the Eastern Conference-worst Atlanta Hawks on Mar. 20, was stunned at the buzzer by the Boston Celtics in a 97-94 loss on Wednesday. "We just didn't execute the way we needed to in some situations," Jazz coach Quin Snyder told reporters. "All that aside, we didn't rebound defensively down the stretch. Whether it was the free-throw line late, I felt like if we could've secured a couple of defensive boards, that makes up for when you're struggling on the offensive end." Utah goes into play on Thursday in eighth place in the West, one game ahead of the ninth-place Los Angeles Clippers. The Grizzlies stunned another playoff contender with a 108-103 win over Portland on Wednesday as the roster tries to earn a spot not only in the franchise but in the NBA.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, FS Southeast (Memphis), AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain (Utah)

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (21-54): Memphis signed 29-year-old shooting guard MarShon Brooks to a 10-day contract and he scored 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting in his season debut on Wednesday. Brooks, who was playing in an NBA game for the first time since April 16, 2014, is a former first-round draft pick and went 5-of-5 from 3-point range against the Trail Blazers. "If you look back, he's a bucket getter," interim coach J.B. Bickerstaff told reporters of Brooks. "You look at what he's done since he's been in the Chinese league. That's what he does. He scores the ball. You don't have to run plays for him. The ball finds him and one-on-one situations, you see he's hard to guard. His ability to make shots from deep puts pressure on defenses."

ABOUT THE JAZZ (42-33): Rookie guard Donovan Mitchell scored a team-high 22 points on Wednesday but was 7-of-20 from the floor and committed four turnovers. "They just played zone," Mitchell told reporters. "It was a little different look. That was pretty much it. I turned the ball over at the end of the game. We have to take care of the ball." Backcourt mate Ricky Rubio was just 4-of-14 from the floor in the setback but finished with 10 assists after failing to record an assist in a win at Golden State on Sunday.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Grizzlies SG Wayne Selden scored in double figures in six of the last seven games, raising his season average to 9.1.

2. Jazz PG Dante Exum is 10-of-14 from the floor over the last three games.

3. Utah held Memphis to an average of 83 points in winning the last two meetings.

PREDICTION: Jazz 106, Grizzlies 89

Los Angeles Clippers vs. Portland Trail Blazers Preview and Predictions 03-30-2018

29th March 2018 by Gracenote
The Los Angeles Clippers are surging toward the top eight in the Western Conference with wins in three straight, but the schedule is not getting any easier down the stretch. The Clippers will try to push it to four in a row when they visit the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday.

Los Angeles sits one game behind the eighth-place Utah Jazz in a tightly-packed group led by the Trail Blazers, who occupy the No. 3 spot. The Clippers used an 18-0 run in the fourth quarter to skip past the Phoenix Suns in a 111-99 win on Wednesday and spent the night watching the rest of the scores from around the league. "Of course everybody is caught into that right now," Los Angeles guard Austin Rivers told reporters. "I think teams that aren't even in the race are caught up in it right now because they just want to see. So, we're watching. We know who lost tonight. We know who won tonight. We're not caught up in it, but we're definitely keeping an eye on it." Portland is keeping an eye on it as well and is suddenly looking vulnerable with losses in three of the last five games, including a stunning 108-103 setback at the lowly Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, FS Prime Ticket (Los Angeles), NBCS Northwest (Portland)

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (41-34): Los Angeles only has one road game left on the schedule after Friday -- at Utah on Thursday -- but will play six of its final seven games against teams with winning records. "Every game is do-or-die for us," center DeAndre Jordan told the Los Angeles Times. "Every game we drop, it's going to be tougher and tougher for us to extend our season, like I keep saying. We still got a chance and I think we're still optimistic in this locker room. But we've got to take care of business." Jordan is doing his part by averaging 17.3 rebounds while shooting 64.1 percent from the floor in March.

ABOUT THE TRAIL BLAZERS (46-29): Portland won 13 straight prior to the current lull and beat a pair of playoff teams on the road at Oklahoma City and New Orleans before suffering the letdown in Memphis. "We had leads and let them come back in the game; didn't sustain it," shooting guard CJ McCollum told reporters. "We didn't sustain our brand of basketball, gave up some easy points, gave up some second chance opportunities, and they competed, battled and won the game." McCollum scored 42 points on 16-of-25 shooting in the loss while All-Star point guard Damian Lillard missed the game following the birth of his child.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Blazers PG Wade Baldwin IV made his second appearance of the season on Wednesday and scored 15 points in 21 minutes off the bench.

2. Clippers PG Milos Teodosic (foot) sat out Wednesday and is day-to-day.

3. Los Angeles won 104-103 at Portland on Oct. 26 but lost the two meetings at home.

Milwaukee Bucks vs. Los Angeles Lakers Preview and Predictions 03-30-2018

30th March 2018 by Gracenote
The eighth-place Milwaukee Bucks strive to move closer to clinching an Eastern Conference playoff spot when they visit the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday. Milwaukee recorded an impressive 116-107 road victory over the Golden State Warriors on Thursday and is five games ahead of the ninth-place Detroit Pistons with seven games remaining.

All-Star small forward Giannis Antetokounmpo dominated the host Warriors with 32 points on 14-of-18 shooting and the Bucks took a 20-point lead into the fourth quarter before prevailing. "This gives us a lot of confidence," Antetokonumpo said in a postgame television interview. "We got another game (Friday) versus the Lakers. We got to come out and play hard but (this) is a great win." The Lakers might be without rookie point guard Lonzo Ball, who is listed as questionable after Thursday's MRI exam revealed he suffered a bruised left knee during Wednesday's 103-93 victory over the Dallas Mavericks. "It wasn't in the spot that I previously hurt it that caused me to miss a lot of games so I wasn't too worried about it," Ball told reporters, referring to a 15-game absence that stretched from mid-January through the following month's All-Star break. "It's just kind of like a bruise. It just hurts but I should be back soon."

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, FS Wisconsin (Milwaukee), Spectrum Sports Net (Los Angeles)

ABOUT THE BUCKS (40-35): Antetokounmpo tweaked the right ankle that caused him to miss a game last week during the third quarter of Thursday's game but indicated afterward that it wasn't an issue. "I feel good," Antetokounmpo said. "I just have to play through it and that's what I do." Swingman Khris Middleton scored 23 points despite briefly leaving during the first half with a hyperextended knee but he assured reporters after the contest that he would play against the Lakers.

ABOUT THE LAKERS (33-41): Guard Isaiah Thomas is done for the season and perhaps for good with the Lakers after undergoing surgery on his right hip Thursday. Thomas, who will be a unrestricted free agent following the campaign, averaged 15.6 points and five assists in 17 games after being acquired from the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles coach Luke Walton appreciated his attitude. "He never complained," Walton told reporters. "Every day, I asked him how he was feeling, he said, 'I feel great, coach.' Obviously, he was in some pain and had some discomfort. I didn't know about it because he was always saying how good he felt."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Antetokounmpo recorded 33 points and 15 rebounds as the Bucks defeated the visiting Lakers 98-90 on Nov. 11.

2. Milwaukee C Thon Maker (groin) is expected to miss his third straight game.

3. Los Angeles PF Julius Randle has posted four straight double-doubles and nine in the past 11 games, while averaging 22.4 points and 10.6 rebounds during the stretch.

Carolina Hurricanes vs. Washington Capitals Preview and Predictions 03-30-2018

29th March 2018 by Gracenote
The surging Washington Capitals have already wrapped up a playoff berth and are closing in on their third consecutive Metropolitan Division title. The two-time reigning Presidents' Trophy winners look to extend their winning streak to a season-high six games when they host the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday night.

Washington leads the division by five points and is peaking at the right time, completing a home-and-home sweep of the New York Rangers on Wednesday night to improve to 9-1-0 over its last 10 games and secure its fourth straight postseason berth. "It's the first step on the way," forward Lars Eller said after scoring the tying goal with under two minutes left in regulation in Wednesday's 3-2 overtime win over New York. "We want to win our division and go into the playoffs on a high note." The Capitals have won five of the past six meetings against the Hurricanes, although Carolina skated to a 3-1 victory in its last visit to Washington on Jan. 11. The Hurricanes' playoff hopes unraveled after they lost 11 of 14 starting in mid-February and, even if they win their final five, they will be mathematically eliminated from contention if New Jersey earns one point over its last five games.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Carolina, NBCS Washington

ABOUT THE HURRICANES (34-32-11): After managing one goal and one assist in an 18-game span, forward Phillip Di Giuseppe has come alive by netting three goals and setting up three others in the past four contests. "I like to think I've been doing the same things," Di Giuseppe said. "I've been trying to move my feet more and just shoot it and not overthink it." Rookie Warren Foegele scored in each of his first two NHL games, but he was sent back to Charlotte of the American Hockey League on Thursday.

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (46-24-7): With Philipp Grubauer ailing, Washington needed Braden Holtby to come up with a solid effort and he delivered with 35 saves against New York. It marked only the second time in 11 starts that Holtby yielded fewer than three goals. "I felt comfortable," Holtby said. "It's something I'm not used to -- not playing much. The stamina and such was a little different than I was used to, but it felt good to go out there and just get to work and play in a high-intensity game."

OVERTIME

1. Capitals C Nicklas Backstrom has eight assists during a three-game point streak and is four shy of reaching 50 for the fifth straight season.

2. The Hurricanes are 1-for-15 on the power play over the past seven games.

3. Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin has three goals and five points in three meetings versus Carolina this season.

PREDICTION: Capitals 4, Hurricanes 2

Toronto Maple Leafs vs. New York Islanders Preview and Predictions 03-30-2018

29th March 2018 by Gracenote
After setting franchise records with their 46th win overall and 27th at home this season, the Toronto Maple Leafs received their biggest victory this season without stepping foot on the ice. The now-playoff-bound Maple Leafs will vie for their eighth win in 10 outings when they visit the New York Islanders on Friday.

"I think those things are all great, but we've got bigger plans. We're just moving along and trying to get better," Toronto coach Mike Babcock said after Wednesday's 4-3 win over Florida pushed the club to the edge of a postseason berth -- one that was secured after the Panthers dropped a 3-2 shootout loss to Ottawa the following night. Mitch Marner recorded a goal and an assist versus Florida to raise his totals to four and 10, respectively, during his 10-game point streak heading into Friday's tilt versus New York. The Islanders' postseason aspirations sank like an anchor as the team dropped 14 of 16 (2-10-4) to plummet into the cellar of the Metropolitan Division before scratching for a 4-3 win over Ottawa on Tuesday. "As athletes we want to win, we hate losing so we want to compete, we want to go out there and work hard do the right thing," forward Anthony Beauvillier said. "It's about pride, it's about playing for us and it's about feeling good about ourselves."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, TSN4 (Toronto), MSG-Plus (New York)

ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAFS (46-24-7): Frederik Andersen turned side 30 shots against Florida to record his career-high 36th win this season, with a 28-save performance in a 5-0 victory on Jan. 31 highlighting his dominance over the Islanders. The 28-year-old Dane benefited from Marner and Auston Matthews scoring a goal in both meetings against New York to improve to his career mark to 5-1-1 versus the club. Speaking of Matthews, the former top overall pick hasn't missed a beat since returning from a month-long absence due to a right shoulder injury -- recording two goals and two assists in his last four outings.

ABOUT THE ISLANDERS (32-35-10): Anders Lee netted his sixth goal in the last six games to open the scoring in the first period on Tuesday and push his team-high total to 39, one shy of New York's previous high output by Jason Blake in 2006-07. The 27-year-old's power-play goal was New York's 10th in its past seven contests. Lee also assumed the team's ironman distinction after Nick Leddy saw his consecutive games streak end on Tuesday, although the latter is expected to join fellow defenseman Johnny Boychuk in being reinserted back into the lineup against the Maple Leafs.

OVERTIME

1. Toronto D Morgan Rielly has set up five goals in his last four games to boost his season total to 43 assists, with a career-high 22 coming at even strength.

2. New York C Casey Cizikas sat out Thursday's practice as he nurses an upper-body injury and has been ruled out for the team's back-to-back set with the Maple Leafs and New Jersey (Saturday).

3. Toronto F Leo Komarov practiced on Thursday for the first time since sustaining a lower-body injury and is expected to return versus Winnipeg on Saturday.

Tampa Bay Lightning vs. New York Rangers Preview and Predictions 03-30-2018

30th March 2018 by Gracenote
The Tampa Bay Lightning have dropped to second place in the Atlantic Division for the first time since October but try to regain the top spot Friday, when they visit the New York Rangers. Boston, which has played one fewer game and is idle on Friday, lead the division by one point after posting a 4-2 victory on Thursday over the Lightning, who have lost five of their last eight contests.

Tampa Bay defenseman Victor Hedman registered a goal and an assist in Thursday's setback while J.T. Miller netted his eighth tally in 14 games since being acquired from the Rangers in a blockbuster deal at the trade deadline. The Lightning are 5-5-1 in the second game of back-to-back sets in 2017-18 after winning their last two and attempt to capture the season series against the Rangers, who will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2009-10. New York has lost five of its last six (1-3-2) after coughing up a lead with 1:05 remaining in the third period and losing 3-2 in overtime at Washington on Wednesday. "So frustrating," Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist told reporters. "When you're tied up that late after playing so hard and doing so many good things, it doesn't matter where you are in the standings, you want to win games."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NHL Network, Sportsnet, TVA, FS Florida (Tampa Bay), MSG (New York)

ABOUT THE LIGHTNING (51-22-4): Nikita Kucherov was limited to one shot on Thursday but recorded an assist to move within three of the first career 100-point season. Captain Steven Stamkos also registered only one shot after missing the previous contest with a lower-body injury and is mired in a 10-game goal-scoring drought despite registering 86 points overall. Ryan Callahan (upper body) is close to returning to the lineup after missing the last four games, while Adam Erne (lower body) did not play Thursday and is out indefinitely.

ABOUT THE RANGERS (33-35-9): Lias Andersson and Filip Chytil, who both were selected in the first round of last year's draft, have made an impact in their first two games since being recalled from Hartford of the American Hockey League. Andersson recorded one goal, one assist and a plus-2 rating in the home-and-home series against Washington while Chytil, who also appeared in two contests in October, notched an assist in Monday's loss to the Capitals. Mika Zibanejad has been kept off the scoresheet in his last two games after scoring seven times in the previous five contests to increase his career-high total to 27 goals.

OVERTIME

1. New York C Vladislav Namestnikov has recorded two goals and an assist in 14 games since being acquired from the Lightning in the deadline deal.

2. Hedman needs one goal to match the career high of 16 he set last season and is two shy of his second straight 60-point campaign.

3. The Rangers have won five of the last seven meetings, including a split of two contests in Tampa Bay earlier this season.

Chicago Blackhawks vs. Colorado Avalanche Preview and Predictions 03-30-2018

30th March 2018 by Gracenote
The Colorado Avalanche hope to land themselves back into a playoff spot in the Western Conference when they host the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday. Colorado sits one point behind both St. Louis and Anaheim, who occupy the two wild-card positions, with five games remaining.

The Avalanche find themselves on the outside as a result of having lost three of their last four contests, including Wednesday's 2-1 setback against Philadelphia. Matt Nieto scored the lone goal in the loss to increase his point total to 24, which is three shy of the career high he set in 2014-15 with San Jose. Chicago extended its point streak to three games Thursday and halted its four-game slide at home with a 6-2 triumph over Winnipeg as Tomas Jurco recorded his first career two-goal performance. Colorado went 2-0-1 in its first three meetings with the Blackhawks this season, including two in Chicago earlier this month.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, NBCS Chicago, Altitude2 (Colorado)

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (32-36-10): Chicago recalled J.F. Berube from Rockford of the American Hockey League after being forced to spring emergency backup goaltender Scott Foster into action on Thursday. The 36-year-old Foster, a member of a beer league who was signed to an amateur tryout contract, entered in the third period and stopped all seven shots he faced after Collin Delia - also making his NHL debut after Anton Forsberg suffered a season-ending injury during the morning practice - succumbed to cramps. Jurco, who needs two goals to match the career high of eight he set in 2013-14 as a rookie with Detroit, is expected to appear in his 200th NHL game on Friday.

ABOUT THE AVALANCHE (41-28-8): Andrew Hammond made 31 saves Wednesday in his debut with Colorado, but his stint with the team may be a brief one as Jonathan Bernier returned to practice Thursday. The 29-year-old Bernier has missed three games due to an infection in a cut on his hand that earned him a stay in the hospital. Nathan MacKinnon, who leads the team with 92 points, remains two shy of 300 for his career after being kept off the scoresheet in three straight contests.

OVERTIME

1. Avalanche RW Sven Andrighetto, who has missed three games with a lower-body injury, practiced Thursday and could play against the Blackhawks.

2. Chicago D Brent Seabrook recorded one shot and a plus-1 rating over nearly 19 minutes of ice time Wednesday in his 1,000th NHL contest.

3. Colorado is just 1-for-13 on the power play over its last four games.

Los Angeles Kings vs. Anaheim Ducks Preview and Predictions 03-30-2018

30th March 2018 by Gracenote
The Los Angeles Kings appear to be heating up at just the right time and can tighten their grip on third place in the Pacific Division when they visit the Anaheim Ducks on Friday. Los Angeles topped Arizona 4-2 on Thursday to move two points ahead of the Ducks and improve to 6-2-2 in its last 10 contests.

Jeff Carter was the difference against the Coyotes as he celebrated his 900th NHL game with his sixth career regular-season hat trick, giving him 13 goals in his last 16 contests and seven points during his four-game streak. Anaheim, which has a game in hand on the Kings, is even in points with St. Louis but occupies the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference. The Ducks are beginning their final homestand of the season after going 2-1-1 on a road trip that concluded Tuesday with a 4-1 loss in Vancouver, which halted their six-game overall point streak (5-0-1). Anaheim, which has won three straight and is 10-1-2 in its last 13 at Honda Center, is 2-0-1 against Los Angeles this season - including a 2-1 home victory Jan. 19.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, Sportsnet One, KCOP-13 (Los Angeles), Prime Ticket (Anaheim)

ABOUT THE KINGS (43-28-7): Anze Kopitar scored his 35th goal of the season Thursday, eclipsing the previous career high he set in 2009-10. The 30-year-old Slovenian, who hasn't been kept off the scoresheet in consecutive contests since a three-game drought from Dec. 23-30, has registered 18 tallies and 31 assists over his last 39 games. Defenseman Jake Muzzin is expected to miss his second straight contest after suffering an upper-body injury in Monday's victory over Calgary.

St. Louis Blues vs. Vegas Golden Knights Preview and Predictions 03-30-2018

29th March 2018 by Gracenote
The St. Louis Blues have ventured past regulation on four occasions during their season-high six-game winning streak, with the willingness to work overtime and successful results allowing them to move into the top wild-card spot in the Western Conference. The Blues look to continue their good fortune on Friday as they open a brief two-game road trip versus the Vegas Golden Knights.

Vladimir Tarasenko has led the way during the sizzling stretch, scoring four times in his last three games and capping Tuesday's two-goal performance with a tap-in 2:33 into overtime of a 3-2 win against San Jose. The 26-year-old Russian has recorded four consecutive 30-goal seasons, becoming the first Blues player to accomplish the feat since Hall of Famer Brett Hull did so in six straight campaigns (1988-94). First-place Vegas has done quite all right during its inaugural season, although its 7-6-3 mark in the last 16 games has permitted surging San Jose to moved within five points in the Pacific Division. "I want our team to be a solid, 60-minute effort and we haven't had that the last three games," coach Gerard Gallant said after the Golden Knights' 3-2 loss to Arizona on Wednesday. "We've got to pick it up, we've got to get focused, we've got to get ready."

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, FS Midwest (St. Louis), AT&T Sportsnet-Rocky Mountains (Vegas)

ABOUT THE BLUES (43-28-5): NHL Second Star of the Week Jake Allen has turned aside 95 of 100 shots in his last four games and boasts an 8-1-0 mark in his last nine starts. Brayden Schenn has six points in his last six games (one goal, five assists) and set up a goal in each encounter versus Vegas this season. Captain Alex Pietrangelo scored in a 3-2 setback to the Golden Knights on Oct. 21 and has 13 points (four goals, nine assists) in his last nine games overall.

ABOUT THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS (48-22-7): Alex Tuch is enjoying a strong surge with goals in back-to-back outings, but the rookie openly lamented his team's sluggish starts of late. "When the opposing team scores first, it's kind of a downer," the 21-year-old Tuch said. "You can't really control emotions sometimes. We were chasing the puck, chasing the game, chasing the score, and we can't do that." Jonathan Marchessault notched an assist against the Coyotes to extend his point streak to six games (three goals, five assists).

OVERTIME

1. St. Louis has allowed an NHL-low 25 goals during its 8-2-1 mark in March.

2. Vegas G Marc-Andre Fleury, who owns a 403-228-70 record, is one win shy of moving into sole possession of 11th place on the NHL's career wins list.

3. Blues D Joel Edmundson will play in his 200th career game on Friday.

PREDICTION: Blues 4, Golden Knights 3

NBA | Nuggets vs Thunder
Play on: Nuggets +4½ -115 at MyBookie

Jack’s Free Pick Friday: Denver Nuggets +4.5
The Denver Nuggets are in must-win mode with just seven games remaining in their season. If they want to make the playoffs, they are going to need a big finish. They trail the Jazz by two games for the 8th and final playoff spot.
I like this spot for the Nuggets a lot. They will be coming in on two days’ rest after a tough 4-point loss in Toronto as 8-point underdogs on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Thunder will be playing the 2nd of a back-to-back after a 99-103 loss in San Antonio last night.
Few teams have had the Thunder’s number quite like the Nuggets. Indeed, Denver is 3-1 SU & 4-0 ATS in its last four meetings with Oklahoma City. The only loss came by a single point 95-94 on the road as 5-point underdogs.
Denver is 22-8 ATS in road games off a road loss over the last three seasons. Oklahoma City is 1-11 ATS when revenging a loss as a road favorite this season. The Thunder are 4-20 ATS when revenging all losses as a favorite this season. Bet the Nuggets Friday.

Play on: Clippers +6½ -110 at pinnacle

Every game from here on out is a must-win game for the Clippers. They have been playing very well lately and Doc Rivers is doing his best coaching job since his days in Boston. We think he will have his team ready tonight. Damian Lillard for the Blazers just had a kid and has been away from the team but is expected to play tonight, but he might not be here 100% mentally and we think the Clippers will be dialed in here. The Clippers are 10-4 ATS this season when getting six or more points and we think they bring their A Game tonight in what should be a very close game.

MLB | Astros vs Rangers
Play on: Astros -1½ -114 at 5Dimes

Take the Houston Astros on the RUN LINE (#965)
From all indications, the defending World Series champs are primed to be every bit as good in 2018, and there’s no reason to expect any sort of hangover. Dallas Keuchel: “We’re not the Cubs”; in reference to Chicago’s ‘hangover’ season last year following their World Series title in 2016.
Houston picked up right where they left off last October, taking care of business against the Rangers on opening day. This is a rotation loaded with legitimate aces, like Dallas Keuchel who is starting today. Keuchel dominated the Rangers on three separate occasions last year right here in Arlington – two earned runs allowed in 18.1 innings of work while striking out 22 batters and holding the Rangers to a .206 batting average against.
The Astros bullpen is truly elite – there’s a reason the Rangers notched only six hits at home on opening day; struggling to make contact even after Justin Verlander left the game and scoring their only run on a truly meaningless wild pitch in the ninth inning when trailing by four runs. There are no fatigue problems from that pen tonight. And when we’re talking about a lineup with multiple All Stars – four of their six hits yesterday went for extra bases, including a couple of dingers –it’s not like the Astros even need dominant starting pitching to win by multi-run margins on a regular basis against lesser foes like Texas.
I don’t overreact to Spring Training results. That being said, the Rangers 8-22 Spring Training – worst in the majors – was meaningful for a rebuilding team with low expectations, primed to struggle from Day 1 of the regular season. This team was nothing short of awful in Cactus League play. Their lineup lacks potency outside of a couple of middle of the order bats. And Texas has bullpen issues right from the get-go; bad news against the Astros big bats.
It’s not hard to make a case for betting against Doug Fister at this stage of his career. Fister has crapped out in Washington, Houston and Boston over the last three years – no contender wanted him back. Current Astros have hit .302 against him, but those numbers were worse last year – two appearances against Houston, 6.2 innings of work, six earned runs, nine hits and two walks allowed.
The fact that Fister is pitching out of the #2 spot in the rotation – a tired retread on a one year deal -- speaks volumes about the Rangers are precariously short on starting pitching options. Chalk worth laying, but not too much chalk – expect a win by multiple runs here, making the Run Line the preferred way to attack this wager! Take the Astros on the Run Line.

Play on: Grizzlies +15½ -108 at 5Dimes

Dave’s Friday Free Play:
1* on Memphis Grizzlies +15.5
The Key: Oddsmakers have adjusted this line too much in Utah’s favor. Of course the Jazz need to win, but that doesn’t mean they are going to win by 16-plus points to cover this huge 15.5-point spread. The Grizzlies have shown they aren’t just going to pack it in. They are coming off back-to-back upset wins against playoff teams, winning 101-93 in Minnesota as 13-point dogs and 108-103 at home against Portland as 5.5-point dogs. Utah has been upset 94-97 at home by Boston as 10.5-point favorites and 94-99 at home against Atlanta as 13.5-point favorites in its last 2 home games. The Jazz are starting to feel the pressure of trying to make the playoffs. Take Memphis.

1 Unit FREE PLAY on Cleveland Cavaliers -4
The Cleveland Cavaliers are trying to secure the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference. They are currently in that position and want to hold on so that way they’ll be matched up with the banged-up Celtics in the second round. Lebron James is playing as well as perhaps he’s every played right now, leading the Cavs to a 6-1 SU & 5-2 ATS stretch over their last seven games. The new players they got in the trade are starting to gel, and the Cavs will continue being a dangerous team moving forward. The home team is 6-1 ATS in the last seven meetings in this series. Give me the Cavs.

MLB | Yankees vs Blue Jays
Play on: Yankees -143 at 5Dimes

I'm backing the NY Yankees on Friday with Tanaka over Sanchez. New York is back to its dominating attack reminiscent of the late 1990s and the Yankees had no trouble with the Blue Jays on Opening Day as Giancarlo Stanton hit two home runs in his first game with the Bronx Bombers. Masahiro Tanaka has owned Toronto hitters, who have a collective .189 batting average against him and just a .360 slugging percentage. Tanaka was 3-1 versus Toronto with a .216 opposing batting average in five starts in 2017. Aaron Sanchez is trying to recover from four stints on the disabled list last season, three of which were due to blisters. In four starts at home, Sanchez allowed 14 runs (10 earned) on 19 hits in 13 innings. The Yanks have won eight of Tanaka's last 11 starts and five of his last six starts versus the Blue Jays. We're backing the NY Yankees on Friday. Thanks & GL! Scott Spreitzer.

10* FREE MLB PICK (Cubs -1.5)
I cashed in with the Cubs on the run line Thursday, as Chicago won 8-4 over the Marlins, despite a poor outing from starter Jon Lester. I'll gladly take my chances with the Cubs on the -1.5 run line again on Friday. Chicago's offense could have easily scored double-digits in the opener, as they let a bunch of opportunities go by. It was also a bit of bad luck that the 3 homers they hit all came with no runners on base. I see no reason they don't continue their offensive onslaught in Game 2 of the series, as Miami sends out Caleb Smith, who is only getting the nod here because of an injury to starter Dan Straily. Chicago counters with Kyle Hendricks, who I think is a legit threat to win the NL Cy Young this season. Hendricks had a down year in 2017, largely due to injuries, yet still went 7-5 with a solid 3.03 ERA in 24 starts. He should own this Marlins offense, which is easily the worst unit in the league. Give me the Cubs -1.5 (-123)!

NHL | Blues vs Golden Knights
Play on: UNDER 5½ -110

This is a 1* Free Play on the UNDER between St. Louis and Las Vegas.
St. Louis has won eight of ten, including six straight. None have been “easy” either, as four of the last six have been decided in OT, including its latest 3-2 OT win over the Sharks. These teams played to a lower-scoring affair the last time they got together in the Blues’ 2-1 victory in early January and we think that everything points to similar tightly-checked, lower-scoring contest. The Knights clinched their playoff spot and have since been resting players and re-working things in anticipation of the post-season. Vegas though will be eager to get untracked as it comes in having split its last ten games, including falling 3-2 to Arizona in its most recent action. Note that the Blues have seen the total go UNDER in 13 of 17 already this year when playing with two days rest, while Las Vegas has seen the total go UNDER the number in nine of 15 in trying to revenge a loss against an opponent. Consider the UNDER.

DMack's Free Play for Friday, March 30, 2018 is on the Orlando Magic
These are two teams really stinking up the joint while playing out the string and trying to accumulate the most ping pong balls for June. You'd be hard pressed to find a team expending as little effort as the Chicago Bulls who have now lost seven straight (2-5 ATS) including the first first three games of this roadie by 22-32-11. The Magic are 2-4 in their L6 and seem to at least play hard at times. As bad as the Bulls are right now, the Magic might not be able to help winning this by double-digits if the ball is going down.

#MLB FREE PICK FROM MIKE LUNDIN
The New York Yankees opened the season with a dominant 6-1 victory here at Toronto on Thursday. Giancarlo Stanton hit a two-run homer in his first at-bat as a Yankee and went 3-for-5 with two homers on the day to improve to five homers in four career games at Rogers Centre.
Toronto recorded just two hits in the defeat, and odds are that the Blue Jays will struggle to get on the board again when facing Masahiro Tanaka on the mound Friday night. Tanaka is 9-4 with a 2.95 ERA in 15 career starts against Toronto, allowing one earned run or no earned runs in seven of those starts. Yankees are 5-1 in Tanaka's last six starts vs. Blue Jays.
The Blue Jays turn to Aaron Sanchez who was sharp during spring training, but he won only once last year as recurring blister issues limited him to only eight starts. I don't see Sanchez getting enough run support in this contest.
