RECOMMENDED CHOICES
The Walker Group Picks

# 4 THE FIELD CRICKET 9/5

# 2 GOD I AM HANDSOME 5/2

# 5 JACK KETEL 5/1

THE FIELD CRICKET has a decent shot to take this race. Is a contender - given the 64 speed fig from his most recent race. Is tough not to consider given the company run in lately. Shows signs of the look of a lucrative play, averaging a solid 67 speed figure which is one of the most competitive in this group. GOD I AM HANDSOME - Ought to be given consideration here if only for the very good Equibase Speed Figure posted in the last affair. The average Equibase class rating alone makes this entrant a key contender. JACK KETEL - Has ran strongly in longer quarter horse races.

#6 OBVIOUS TWO (ML=7/2)

OBVIOUS TWO - Sprinters that come back to the races quickly are generally good plays. Gonzalez rode this mount for the initial time last time around the track and comes right back in this race. Is ranked at the top in EPS (earnings per start). A strong try right here will boost the lifetime total. Have to give this filly a chance. Ran a nice effort last out within the last 30 days.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 NAVAL COMMISSION (ML=5/2), #3 OUR DREAM (ML=3/1), #5 PRETTY PENNY PADDY (ML=6/1),

NAVAL COMMISSION - This favorite may be out of shape without any recent morning drills. Had to show me more than that last time around the track. Never made much of an impact. OUR DREAM - Don't believe this steed will make a winning move in today's event. That last speed fig was quite unimpressive when compared with today's class figure. PRETTY PENNY PADDY - Difficult to put your money on the win end of any horse that finishes second and third as often as this horse does. Should have at least finished in the money in the last two months in a short distance clash to be any kind of value at low odds in a sprint.

# 1 DETERMINATOR 3/1

# 4 DONTBOTHERMENOW 5/2

# 2 ANECHOIC 2/1

I lean toward DETERMINATOR here. Have to consider solely on class, with some of the top class numbers of this group of horses in this race. Has posted formidable Equibase Speed Figures in dirt route races in the past. Hard to pass on this gelding with Paucar in the saddle. DONTBOTHERMENOW - Have to think this equine will run well again this time out. Conditioner boasts very solid win figs at this distance and surface. ANECHOIC - With Rivera on top him, this gelding will almost certainly be able to break out quickly in this competition. Could best this group of horses based on the speed figure - 103 - of his last outing.

#6 WITH WINGS (ML=9/2)

WITH WINGS - Ran last time around the track against tougher competition at Parx Racing. The move down in class should suit her well.

Vulnerable Contenders: #10 WATEREE (ML=2/1), #3 YOU'RE DREAMIN (ML=3/1), #7 A PRINCESS SHE IS (ML=6/1),

WATEREE - This horse just hasn't looked sharp recently. A PRINCESS SHE IS - If you keep playing these kind of 'bridesmaid' types, you're going to be let down most of the time. Not probable that this horse will finish better than she did last time when finishing seventh.

Miami Heat vs. Philadelphia 76ers Preview and Predictions 04-16-2018

15th April 2018 by Gracenote
The Philadelphia 76ers' phenomenal 17-game winning streak now includes one playoff victory, the franchise's first in six years. The Sixers will try to make it two straight over the Miami Heat in their best-of-seven Eastern Conference first-round series when the teams meet in Game 2 on Monday in Philadelphia.

After a slow start in Saturday's opener, Philadelphia outscored the Heat by a whopping 74-43 margin in the second half en route to a convincing 130-103 Game 1 victory. "I feel this group has something special in it," coach Brett Brown told reporters after his team made 18-of-28 3-pointers and recorded 34 assists against just 10 turnovers in a dominant effort. The last nine of the Sixers' 17 straight wins have come without All-Star center Joel Embiid (orbital fracture), who could return as soon as Game 2 or 3. The Heat will need to get more out of their own big man, as Hassan Whiteside provided just two points on 1-of-4 shooting in 12 lackluster minutes.
Video: Dwyane Wade -- Miami Heat at Philadelphia 76ers Game 1 -- 04/14/2018

TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT, FS Sun (Miami), NBCS Philadelphia

ABOUT THE HEAT: Whiteside has expressed displeasure at times with head coach Erik Spoelstra and the center seemed to display frustration over his limited minutes in Game 1. "It's not about him," Spoelstra told the media. "This series and this game, it's going to move quickly. It's not necessarily an indictment to his (play)." The play of another 7-footer, Kelly Olynyk, was perhaps another reason for Whiteside's limited contributions, as Olynyk scored a team-high 26 points on 9-of-13 shooting - including 4-of-5 from beyond the arc - off the bench.

ABOUT THE 76ERS: With Embiid sidelined, Philadelphia has been thriving on its many quality outside shooters, and the quartet of JJ Redick, Dario Saric, Marco Belinelli and Ersan Ilyasova combined to hit 15-of-23 long-range attempts in Game 1. "Whether Ersan comes in or Marco comes in, that's who we are," Brown told reporters. "That's what we're trying to coach here. And the guys have bought in. We play fast, we look for each other. The 3-point shot, without Joel, has become a real big part of our identity. We'll continue to do that. You have to do that or you won't win games when it matters." Rookie Ben Simmons was the one finding most of those shooters and he finished his playoff debut with 17 points and 14 assists.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Redick scored a game-high 28 points in Game 1, the third time in his last four games going back to the regular season that he finished with that total.

2. Miami's starters combined to shoot 13-of-40 from the field in Game 1.

3. Including Game 1, Philadelphia won 24 of its last 25 games at Wells Fargo Center.

PREDICTION: 76ers 117, Heat 106

San Antonio Spurs vs. Golden State Warriors Preview and Predictions 04-16-2018

15th April 2018 by Gracenote
the golden state warriors came into the postseason injured and slumping but quickly proved they can flip the switch to playoff mode with a dominating game 1 win over the san antonio spurs on saturday. the warriors will try to keep the pressure on and get off to another hot start to make it a 2-0 cushion when they host the spurs in game 2 on monday.

golden state dropped 10 of its last 17 games in the regular season and struggled on defense but tightened things up that end and held the spurs to 17 first-quarter points to establish a lead it wouldn't relinquish in game 1. "just wanted to put our best defensive lineup on the floor from the beginning," warriors coach steve kerr, who inserted small forward andre iguodala into the starting lineup, told reporters. "i think the whole point of these games here early in this series is to re-establish our defense. i think you guys know, over the last month or so, our defense has been subpar. can't win in this league in the playoffs unless you defend, and they defended tonight, and we went with our best defensive group." san antonio's starting unit wasn't up to the task and only lamarcus aldridge (14 points) scored in double figures among the starting five. "i thought we were very prepared physically and mentally," spurs coach gregg popovich told reporters. "but i was mistaken. as i said, we looked like deer in the headlights. the defense was really poor as far as following game plan of the first quarter, and it's a bad combination to play defense like that and not shoot at the other end."

tv: 10:30 p.m. et, tnt, fs southwest (san antonio), nbcs bay area (golden state)
about the spurs: san antonio shot 40 percent from the floor in game 1 and managed only three offensive rebounds in the 113-92 setback. "we've got to regroup, feel hurt, upset, kind of desperate," guard manu ginobili told reporters. "we don't want to go home (down) 0-2. but at the same time, we've got to be smarter. offensively, we're going to have to move the ball better, sharper, be more aggressive and see what happens. we are underdogs. we've talked about it. to get a win here, we've got to overachieve." popovich started rudy gay in the second half over kyle anderson to generate more offense and could insert gay into the starting lineup for game 2.

about the warriors: starting iguodala over quinn cook left golden state without a true point guard, leading to all-star forward kevin durant running the offense. "it's not just one guy who has the ball all the time and making all the plays," durant, who finished with 24 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, told reporters. "i think that's the beauty of our team, that all of us can go off and score 30 or get eight, nine assists or grab 11 rebounds. that's just the beauty of our team, and all of us chip in when it comes to facilitating and orchestrating." the warriors recorded 32 assists on 44 made field goals in the win, led by forward draymond green's 11.
buzzer beaters

1. warriors sg klay thompson scored a game-high 27 points on 11-of-13 shooting in game 1.

2. spurs pg tony parker - a career 46.1 percent shooter in 222 postseason games - went 1-of-8 from the floor on saturday.

3. golden state won its last 10 postseason games at home.

prediction: warriors 110, spurs 103

Boston Bruins vs. Toronto Maple Leafs Preview and Predictions 04-16-2018

15th April 2018 by Gracenote
the toronto maple leafs are making back-to-back appearances in the postseason for the first time in 14 years but they appear headed for a second straight first-round exit barring a stunning turnaround. toronto has been manhandled in its eastern conference first-round series against the boston bruins and hopes a return home to air canada centre will get it back on track in monday night's game 3.

the maple leafs set franchise records for wins (49) and points (105) in a season but they have been completely overmatched by original six rival boston, which breezed to a 5-1 win in the series opener before scoring four times in the opening period in a 7-3 demolition in game 2. "obviously, they're dominating us," toronto coach mike babcock said. "it obviously hasn't gone the way we want it, we've given up 12 goals in two games, so we've got to go get some home cooking tomorrow, and come back and pull like we can, because we're a way better team than what we showed." boston's no. 1 line was expected to be a difficult test for the maple leafs and the least heralded member of the unit has turned it into a complete mismatch. david pastrnak eclipsed a record held by wayne gretzky by becoming the youngest player to register a six-point game in the postseason after a three-goal, three-assist masterpiece in game 2.
tv: 7 p.m. et, nbc sports network, nesn (boston), cbc, tvas (toronto)
about the bruins: center patrice bergeron and brad marchand form the other two-thirds of boston's top line and each collected four assists in saturday's romp, but pastrnak has been the driving force in helping the unit amass a staggering 20 points in the first two games. "a lot of people in boston already know how good he is," bergeron said of pastrnak, who scored 35 goals in the regular season. "i think people on the outside are getting to know." defenseman torey krug collected all three of his assists in the first-period outburst saturday to give him five for the series.
about the maple leafs: toronto has concerns from one end of the ice to the other, but the biggest are the lack of productivity of its own no. 1 line and the suddenly shaky play of netminder frederik andersen, who was yanked in game 2 after surrendering three goals on five shots. "you've got to give your goalie a chance to be good and we haven't done that," babcock said sunday. "freddy's our guy and he'll be back tomorrow." with nazem kadri serving a three-game suspension, the pressure is even greater on auston matthews and the top line, which has yet to score a point.
overtime

1. pastrnak tied former bruin phil esposito (1969) for the most points in the first two games of a postseason with nine.

2. maple leafs f leo komarov (lower body) was hurt in game 2 and his status is unclear for monday.

3. boston has converted on 5 of 10 power-play chances in the first two games.

prediction: bruins 4, maple leafs 3

Tampa Bay Lightning vs. New Jersey Devils Preview and Predictions 04-16-2018

15th April 2018 by Gracenote
the tampa bay lightning look to continue their offensive production and take a stranglehold of the eastern conference first-round series when they visit the new jersey devils for game 3 on monday night. the lightning scored 10 times while winning the first two games of the series, going 3-for-4 on the power-play and getting multiple goals from three players.

"we've got to play a desperate game," tampa bay defenseman victor hedman said of the next challenge after saturday's 5-3 victory. "we know they are going to come out flying in front of their fans. we've just got to stay calm and stay within our structure and play our game. that's the bottom line." the devils made a big push in the second period of game 1 and finished with a 44-25 advantage in shots after posting 19 in the final 20 minutes of game 2, but gave up three goals in a span of 2:47 in the middle session of that contest. "that's the playoffs, right?" new jersey captain andy greene told reporters. "that's what good teams do. they take opportunities and take advantage of them. that's what we got to realize, that every little play, every big thing, every detail matters." hart trophy candidate taylor hall had a goal and an assist in the first game of the series for the devils, but was shut out saturday despite six shots on net while logging 20:43 of ice time.
tv: 7:30 p.m. et, cnbc, sportsnet, tva2, fs florida (tampa bay), msg plus (new jersey)
about the lightning: alex killorn has often saved his best hockey for the postseason and he is off to another strong start with three goals in the first two games of the series after scoring twice saturday. "you play all season for this," killorn, who has 18 goals and 36 points in 49 career playoff games, told reporters. "playoff hockey is great. there are a few more cameras around, a couple more people watching, but i think we like that pressure." forwards nikita kucherov and tyler johnson have also scored twice in the first two games while defenseman ryan mcdonagh and left wing ondrej palat each boast three assists.
about the devils: cory schneider, who has not won a game since dec. 27 while struggling with injuries and an .863 save percentage since, stopped all 10 shots he faced in relief of keith kinkaid on saturday and could get the start monday. "it was good to give him an opportunity to get in there," coach john hynes told reporters, "and i thought he came in and made huge saves, looked solid, so that's a positive for us moving forward." hynes went with 11 forwards and seven defensemen saturday while inserting blue liner damon severson (three shots, 16:41 of ice time) into the lineup and hinted there could be more changes for game 3.

overtime

1. new jersey c nico hischier became the youngest player to score a playoff goal in franchise history saturday at 19 years, 100 days.

2. tampa bay rw ryan callahan (upper-body) and d dan girardi (undisclosed) left saturday's game and will be evaluated monday.

3. devils rw kyle palmieri and lw patrick maroon have totaled seven shots apiece in the first two games, but have yet to be included on the scoresheet.

prediction: lightning 4, devils 3

Nashville Predators vs. Colorado Avalanche Preview and Predictions 04-16-2018

15th April 2018 by Gracenote
the colorado avalanche are banking that the rocky mountain air will breathe new life into their western conference first-round series with the nashville predators. the avalanche, who matched franchise records for consecutive home wins (10) and total victories on the season (28), have dropped 12 straight to the predators -- including the first two heading into monday's game 3.

"we have been good there all season, we used our energy to our advantage," hart trophy candidate nathan mackinnon said. "we have won some big games at home. everyone feels good coming to the pepsi center, and hopefully we can get some offense there." the 22-year-old mackinnon recorded his fourth multi-point performance of his postseason career with a goal and an assist in a 5-4 win in saturday's game 2, giving him six points (three goals, three assists) in six contests versus nashville since the start of the 2017-18 season. the presidents' trophy-winning predators may lead the series but they have plenty of areas in which to improve, including sluggish starts that have seen the team outscored 2-0 in the first period. "we're going to be desperate too," nashville captain roman josi said. "it's a huge game for both teams. game 3 is always a big game. i think (coach peter laviolette) is right; desperation trumps momentum, and we have to make sure we match their desperation."
tv: 10 p.m. et, nbcsn, sportsnet, tvas, fs tennessee (nashville), altitude (colorado)
about the predators: nashville has spread its offense around in the first two games of the series, with eight players responsible for the team's 10 goals. filip forsberg and austin watson have each scored twice, with the former netting five goals in his last three contests while latter has tallied in three straight. ryan johansen scored in game 2 to extend his point streak to four contests while defenseman p.k. subban set up two goals on saturday to boost his point total to seven (one goal, six assists) in his last eight outings.
about the avalanche: while mackinnon has eight points (two goals, six assists) in his last seven games, captain gabriel landeskog has seven (two goals, five assists) in that stretch after scoring and setting up a goal in game 2. while the statistics are piling up, the wins are not -- but landeskog told reporters that a victory in game 3 would eliminate any lingering doubts on his club and generate some for the opponent. "i think it's win game 3 and all of a sudden you are feeling good and they start second-guessing themselves," the 25-year-old swede said. "we just got to make sure we take care of these two at home, that's the bottom line. especially game 3, we can't look too much further ahead than that, but make sure we win game 3 and then after that get rolling."

Anaheim Ducks vs. San Jose Sharks Preview and Predictions 04-16-2018

15th April 2018 by Gracenote
the anaheim ducks are in a familiar -- albeit uncomfortable -- position, having lost the opening two games at home for the third time in their last five postseason appearances. the ducks will have to find a way to claw back into their western conference first-round series on the road against a pacific division rival when they head north to face the san jose sharks on monday night.

anaheim closed the season with five consecutive wins to overtake the sharks by one point for second place in the division, but san jose quickly stole home-ice advantage with a 3-0 win in the series opener before putting the ducks on the ropes with a 3-2 victory in saturday's game 2. "we've been down (0-2) before. they have to win four. the series isn't over," anaheim defenseman brandon montour said. "it's tough to lose two at home, but we'll come back and play hard in the next game." the sharks are 5-0-1 against the ducks this season and have limited them to two regulation goals or fewer in eight consecutive meetings, but they are not taking anything for granted. "we've all been around this league a long time and know that team over there has been in this position before and they have been able to claw their way back into a series," san jose forward logan couture said. "we know how important the next game is."
tv: 10:30 p.m. et, cnbc, sportsnet1, tvas2, prime ticket (anaheim), nbcs california (san jose)
about the ducks: anaheim, which entered the postseason with the fewest goals of any of the 16 teams, now must attempt to duplicate last season's series against edmonton, when it dropped the first two at home before rally to prevail in seven games. "sure, we can draw on that," said ducks defenseman hampus lindholm, who scored one goal and set up another saturday. "people have not been believing in us all year but we know what we're capable of." rickard rakell, the team's leading goal (34) and overall scorer, has been limited to two shots on goal through the first two games.
about the sharks: goaltender martin jones won only once in his final five starts of the regulation season but he has turned away 53 of 55 shots in the series and has surrendered only seven goals in five matchups against the ducks this season. captain joe pavelski, who has collected three assists in the first two games, said a key factor for san jose was to not get rattled by the relentless physical play of anaheim. "nothing we haven't taken before," pavelski said. "maybe they are coming a little bit harder. be poised. make some plays. stick to what we are trying to do."

overtime

1. ducks g john gibson has lost six consecutive starts to the sharks.

2. couture had a goal and an assist in game 2 after collecting four points in four games in the regular-season series.

3. injured ducks d cam fowler will not accompany the team to san jose, coach randy carlyle said.

prediction: sharks 3, ducks 2

Miami Marlins vs. New York Yankees Preview and Predictions 04-16-2018

15th April 2018 by Gracenote
derek jeter won't be around, but there will still be plenty of familiarity when the new york yankees welcome the miami marlins on monday for the opener of a two-game interleague series. jeter, the former yankees great now running baseball operations for the marlins, will travel with the team but is not expected to attend either game.

"i went to a spring training game when we played new york, but it would be an awkward situation for me to actually go to yankee stadium," jeter, who spent 20 years as the yankees shortstop and is a likely future hall of famer, told reporters. the marlins have enough to worry about without concerning themselves over the presence of their ceo and roll into the bronx in last place in the national league east and last in the majors in team slugging percentage at .309. miami had a much better team slugging percentage last season with giancarlo stanton and his 59 home runs, but he is having some trouble finding that power stroke in his first season with new york after being traded away by jeter and company over the winter. new york was washed out saturday and sunday in detroit and will send well-rested ace luis severino to the mound on monday against left-hander caleb smith.

tv: 6:35 p.m. et, fs florida (miami), yes (new york)
pitching matchup: marlins lh caleb smith (0-1, 4.73 era) vs. yankees rh luis severino (2-1, 3.50)
smith surrendered three or fewer earned runs in each of his first three starts but has yet to complete six innings. the 26-year-old texan walked six in three innings at philadelphia on april 5 but cut that number down to one while striking out seven in five frames against the new york mets on tuesday. smith was drafted in the 14th round by the yankees in 2013 and pitched in nine games - two starts - for new york last season, posting a 0-1 record with a 7.71 era.
severino was not at his best at boston on tuesday, when he was knocked around for five runs on eight hits and three walks in five innings as new york went on to lose 14-1. the dominican republic native was much better in his first two outings, holding the toronto blue jays and tampa bay rays to a combined two runs and six hits in 13 innings. severino has never faced the marlins but is 4-0 with a 0.91 era in interleague play.

walk-offs

1. stanton is batting .220 with three home runs and 25 strikeouts in 59 at-bats.

2. marlins 2b starlin castro, who was acquired from the yankees in the stanton deal, is leading the team with a .295 batting average.

3. new york rf aaron judge hit safely in the last 11 games.

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Chicago Cubs Preview and Predictions 04-16-2018

15th April 2018 by Gracenote
mother nature made for an interesting - and incomplete - weekend of baseball at wrigley field for the chicago cubs, who hope to get some baseball in when they welcome the rival st. louis cardinals to town for the first of three games monday night. after dropping the opener of a set with the atlanta braves, the cubs stormed back with a nine-run eighth to steal saturday's contest 14-10 in horrible weather conditions.

sunday's contest was one of several across baseball that was postponed, leaving chicago to wait and hope that monday - which is predicted to be wet and cold again - allows for some baseball. "driving out again, it was remarkably bad," cubs manager joe maddon told reporters on sunday after the postponement. "it's just the right thing to do. it's not about just getting games in. you want to be able to play the game on a major league-caliber, championship-caliber level." the cardinals were forced to endure a rain delay sunday in cincinnati before finishing off a four-game sweep of the reds with a 3-2 win. catcher yadier molina had three two-hit games in the series, smacking two homers and driving in six.
tv: 7:05 p.m. et, espn, fs midwest (st. louis), wgn (chicago)
pitching matchup: cardinals rh adam wainwright (0-2, 5.06 era) vs. cubs lh jon lester (1-0, 4.40)

after lasting just 3 2/3 innings in his season debut, wainwright gave up three runs in seven frames against milwaukee on wednesday but still took the loss. the three-time all-star is 10-2 with a 3.79 era in his career at wrigley field, including 7 2/3 innings of two-run ball in his most recent chicago outing last july. addison russell is 6-for-15 with three doubles against wainwright, who is 14-9 with a 4.03 era overall against the cubs.
lester will be making his 100th start as a member of the cubs and looking to bounce back from an uneven outing against pittsburgh in which he gave up four runs in five innings. he was 2-1 with a 2.93 era in five starts against the cardinals in 2017, recording 34 strikeouts in 30 2/3 innings. molina is 12-for-35 with a home run against the 34-year-old lester, who is 25-14 in his career at wrigley field.

walk-offs

1. the cubs won 14 of 19 meetings last season.

2. cardinals 2b matt carpenter is 1-for-14 over his past four contests and is hitting .160 on the season.

3. chicago is averaging 13.5 runs in its last two wins and 0.5 runs in its last two losses.

Colorado Rockies vs. Pittsburgh Pirates Preview and Predictions 04-16-2018

15th April 2018 by Gracenote
the pittsburgh pirates will try to follow up a winning road trip with more success at home when they welcome the colorado rockies on monday for the first of three games. a 7-3 win at miami on sunday gave the pirates a 4-2 trip and sent them back home atop the national league central at 11-4, a surprising mark given the team's dramatic roster turnover this offseason.

starling marte carried pittsburgh on sunday with a 5-for-5 effort that included a ninth-inning homer and four runs scored. josh bell added three hits and corey dickerson was 2-for-4 with two rbis while extending his hitting streak to 10 games for the pirates. the rockies got a two-out homer from ian desmond in the ninth inning to pick up a 6-5 win in washington on sunday, improving to 7-4 on the road. colorado right-hander german marquez was ejected after three innings in his previous start for participating in a brawl with the san diego padres, and he'll get a chance to go deeper in this one opposite steven brault for the pirates.
tv: 7:05 p.m. et, at&t sportsnet rocky mountain (colorado), at&t sportsnet pittsburgh
pitching matchup: rockies rh german marquez (0-1, 4.97 era) vs. pirates lh steven brault (2-0, 3.46)

marquez tossed three scoreless innings while striking out four before the fight with the padres, during which he was spotted throwing a towel. the 23-year-old from venezuela issued 10 walks while fanning just six through his previous two starts. marquez went 2-0 with a 2.25 era in two starts against the pirates last season.
brault won his first two outings this season - one as a starter and one in relief - before struggling at wrigley field on wednesday. the california native was reached for four runs on seven hits in five innings of that game while getting a no-decision in a game the pirates would lose 13-5. brault allowed two runs in an inning of relief in his only prior encounter with the rockies.

walk-offs

1. pirates 2b josh harrison left sunday's game after being hit by a pitch on his left hand and is day-to-day.

2. rockies cf charlie blackmon is 3-for-8 with two homers and a double in two games since returning from a quadriceps injury.

3. the teams split six meetings last season.

Kansas City Royals vs. Toronto Blue Jays Preview and Predictions 04-16-2018

15th April 2018 by Gracenote
the toronto blue jays hope to continue their strong play after sitting out two straight days due to poor weather conditions as they open a three-game series against the visiting kansas city royals on monday. toronto has won nine of 12 games since starting the season with two losses, getting timely hitting despite a .230 team batting average and solid pitching.

"obviously, we've been playing really well, and you want that momentum going," blue jays pitcher marco estrada told the toronto sun. "maybe our first game out (monday), we might be a little rusty, but i don't think taking two days off is going to affect anybody." newcomer jaime garcia, who originally was slated to pitch saturday, is expected to get the start in the series opener for the blue jays while eric skoglund goes after his first victory of the season for kansas city. the royals also had their game against the los angeles angels on sunday postponed and may have needed the break after losing five straight contests in which they gave up a total of 29 runs as they begin a seven-game road trip. mike moustakas has been one of the team's lone bright spots of late as he is riding a seven-game hitting streak, going 13-for-29 with three homers and seven rbis during that stretch to raise his average to .327.
tv: 7:07 p.m. et, fs kansas city, sportsnet one (toronto)
pitching matchup: royals lh eric skoglund (0-1, 9.64 era) vs. blue jays lh jaime garcia (1-0, 3.18)

skoglund struggled in his only start of the season on tuesday as he was tagged for five runs and six hits while hitting three batters over 4 2/3 innings of a loss to seattle. the 25-year-old floridian has not won since his major-league debut on may 30, when he limited detroit to two hits over 6 1/3 scoreless frames. skoglund, who is 0-3 with a 13.22 era in five starts and two relief appearances since the victory, faces the blue jays for the first time in his career after being moved back a day due to sunday's postponement.
garcia recorded his first win with the blue jays in his last start on april 8 after allowing three runs, five hits and two walks with five strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings at texas. the 31-year-old mexican was even better in his season debut against the chicago white sox, giving up one run and four hits while striking out seven over six frames in a no-decision. lucas duda is 2-for-5 with a homer versus garcia, who is 1-1 with a 5.68 era in five career starts against the royals.

walk-offs

1. toronto rhp roberto osuna (five saves) has allowed two hits and struck out five with no walks in 7 1/3 scoreless innings to start the season.

2. kansas city is tied for last in the majors with just five home runs - three from moustakas and two by duda.

3. the royals won four of their six matchups against the blue jays and were 17-15 versus the american league east last year.

Washington Nationals vs. New York Mets Preview and Predictions 04-16-2018

15th April 2018 by Gracenote
the new york mets are sprinting off to the best start in franchise history while their three-game sweep of washington earlier this month sent the nationals spiraling down the standings. the red-hot mets aim to secure their 11th win in 12 contests on monday when they begin a three-game series against the nationals at citi field.

wilmer flores played the unlikely hero and allowed the rest of his teammates to get out of the elements with his third career walk-off homer in the ninth inning of sunday's 3-2 win over milwaukee. "it was good just to get out of that cold," said the 26-year-old venezuelan, who begrudgingly was the recipient of an ice-cold gatorade shower. while the mets won in the ninth inning, the nationals were undone in the same frame -- by a familiar face, no less -- as ian desmond belted a two-out homer against his former team in sunday's 6-5 setback versus colorado. washington has been outscored 58-38 en route to dropping nine of its last 12, including 17-9 during a three-game sweep at the hands of new york from april 5-8.
tv: 7:10 p.m. et, masn (washington), sny (new york)
pitching matchup: nationals rh jeremy hellickson (2017: 8-11, 5.43 era) vs. mets rh jacob degrom (2-0, 3.06)

hellickson, who will be added to washington's 25-man roster on monday, is ready to go after working a pair of extended spring straining league games in florida. the 31-year-old pitched well for a young philadelphia squad over parts of two seasons before limping down the stretch in 2017 with a 2-6 mark and gaudy 6.97 era in 10 outings with baltimore. hellickson owns a 2-4 record with a bloated 7.81 era in eight career starts versus the mets.
degrom surrendered just one earned run on four hits for the second time in as many starts this season as he improved to 6-4 in his career versus washington following an 8-2 triumph on april 5. the 29-year-old walked away with a no-decision in his last trip to the mound despite yielding four runs - including his first homer of the season - in six innings at miami. bryce harper (mlb-best seven homers) is 9-for-26 versus degrom, but the right-hander has kept anthony rendon (2-for-21, six strikeouts) and michael taylor (1-for-21, 11 strikeouts) under wraps.

walk-offs

1. washington won eight of 10 games at citi field last season.

2. new york of yoenis cespedes has struck out multiple times in nine of his last 10 games while ss jose reyes is mired in an 0-for-16 stretch.

3. nationals 2b daniel murphy (knee), who is a former met, was scheduled to report to extended spring training on monday in west palm beach, fla.

Texas Rangers vs. Tampa Bay Rays Preview and Predictions 04-16-2018

15th April 2018 by Gracenote
the tampa bay rays are struggling in all areas of the game while sinking to the bottom of the american league and hope to start the recovery process when they host the rejuvenated texas rangers for the opener of their three-game series on monday. the rays have lost four straight, allowing 19 runs in the last two, and manager kevin cash told reporters after sunday's 10-4 defeat against philadelphia that "nothing is working."

to compound tampa bay's problems, former gold glove-winning center fielder kevin kiermaier is likely to miss some time with a right thumb injury he sustained sunday after sliding head-first into second base. kiermaier will undergo an mri on monday as teammate blake snell takes the mound in search of back-to-back wins as he opposes martin perez, who has yet to defeat the rays in his career. the rangers reside in last place in the al west but come in off their first series victory of the season as they took the final two contests of a three-game set in houston. former rays catcher robinson chirinos homered and delivered a two-run double in the 10th inning of texas' 3-1 victory on sunday.
tv: 7:10 p.m. et, fs southwest (texas), fs sun plus (tampa bay)
pitching matchup: rangers lh martin perez (1-1, 11.88 era) vs. rays lh blake snell (1-1, 3.60)

perez was pounded by the los angeles angels on tuesday, when he allowed eight runs on nine hits and four walks over three innings of an 11-1 setback. the 27-year-old venezuelan, who posted a career-high 13 wins in 2017, won his season debut against oakland on april 5 as he yielded three runs and 10 hits across 5 1/3 frames. c.j. cron is 5-for-18 with a double, a triple and six rbis against perez, who is 0-2 with a 5.93 era in six career outings (five starts) versus tampa bay.
snell was overpowering against the chicago white sox on tuesday, striking out 10 while surrendering one run and one hit over six innings, but his pitch count ballooned to 114 with five walks. the 25-year-old native of washington held boston to three hits and two walks over 5 2/3 scoreless innings on march 30 in his only home start but settled for a no-decision. snell, who will be facing texas for the first time, has been markedly better at home (8-7, 3.05 era) than on the road (4-9, 4.65) in his career.

walk-offs

1. texas claimed inf-of renato nunez off waivers from oakland on sunday, and he is expected to join the team for the series opener.

2. tampa bay of mallex smith has gone 11-for-24 with three rbis over his last six games to raise his season average to a team-best .350.

3. the rangers took four of the six meetings last season, including all three at tampa bay.

Philadelphia Phillies vs. Atlanta Braves Preview and Predictions 04-16-2018

15th April 2018 by Gracenote
the atlanta braves endured a miserable weekend in chicago, but return home to open a seven-game homestand monday against the philadelphia phillies feeling good about the start to their season. the braves, who were rained out sunday after blowing an eight-run lead to the cubs in an epic saturday meltdown, nonetheless are 8-6 on the season and finished 4-4 on the three-city, eight-game road trip against three teams that reached the playoffs last season.

"if you'd have told me in the middle of march that we'd be sitting where we are, i'd have been fine," atlanta manager brian snitker told the media after sunday's game was postponed. the phillies also are playing well through the season's early days, extending their winning streak to six games behind red-hot rookie scott kingery with sunday's 10-4 victory at tampa bay. kingery has 12 rbis in his past eight games, and belted a three-run double to help philadelphia build a commanding 10-3 advantage sunday. "we're rolling right now and having fun with it," kingery told reporters afterward. "i think one of the big things is everybody is positive out there, no matter if we're down a couple of runs or up a couple of runs." the series is a rematch of the season-opening set in atlanta, taken by the braves two games to one, and both teams enter swinging the bats well as atlanta is averaging 5.9 runs per game on the season while the phillies have scored 6.2 runs per game during their winning streak.
tv: 7:35 p.m. et, nbcs philadelphia plus, fs southeast (atlanta)
pitching matchup: phillies rh aaron nola (1-0, 1.96 era) vs. braves rh julio teheran (0-1, 7.07)
nola pitched brilliantly against the braves in the season opener, giving up one run on three hits in 5 1/3 innings before being removed after 68 pitches in a game atlanta would rally to win. nola picked up his first victory of the season tuesday against cincinnati, allowing one run on three hits in eight stellar innings with six strikeouts. the 24-year-old has held opponents to a .161 batting average and just two extra-base hits through three starts.
any conversation about teheran starts with his struggles at home, where in 19 career games at suntrust park the 27-year-old is 3-10 with a 6.20 era and 21 homers allowed in 101 2/3 innings. he gave up three longballs in 2 1/3 innings at home against washington on april 3, five days after he surrendered four runs on four hits in 5 2/3 innings in the season opener against the phillies. teheran pitched well in an april 9 loss at washington, giving up two runs on five hits in six innings.

walk-offs

1. atlanta 2b ozzie albies already has five games with multiple extra-base hits this season, and leads the majors with 14 extra-base hits (eight doubles, one triple, five homers).

2. philadelphia scored four runs in the third inning sunday, and so far this season has tallied 39 runs in the opening three frames combined as compared to 40 runs scored in all the other innings.

3. the phillies seek their first seven-game winning streak since september 2012.

Cincinnati Reds vs. Milwaukee Brewers Preview and Predictions 04-16-2018

15th April 2018 by Gracenote
although miller park hasn't been kind to the milwaukee brewers, most venues haven't been hospitable for the cincinnati reds this season. the brewers will look for just their third home win in eight outings on monday when they open a three-game series versus the reeling reds, who have dropped eight in a row to make themselves comfortable in the cellar of the national league central.

the brewers snapped the new york mets' nine-game winning streak on saturday, but those good feelings were lost in the cold the following day as they sustained their eighth loss in 13 outings with a walk-off homer in the finale. to add insult to injury, eric thames (team-leading five homers) exited sunday's contest in the third inning with an ailing groin and ryan braun (club-best eight rbis), who is another option at first base, is plagued by a balky back that forced him to sit out the finale. while milwaukee has been limping physically, cincinnati hasn't held a lead in a staggering 32 innings and has been battered on the scoreboard to the tune of 48-19 during its losing skid. adam duvall belted a solo homer among his two hits in sunday's 3-2 setback to st. louis, improving to 4-for-11 in his last three games after going 1-for-22 with 11 strikeouts in his previous seven.
tv: 7:40 p.m. et, fs ohio (cincinnati), fs wisconsin (milwaukee)
pitching matchup: reds rh luis castillo (0-2, 7.31 era) vs. brewers lh brent suter (1-1, 4.70)

castillo overcame surrendering two homers for the second time in three starts to escape with a no-decision versus philadelphia on wednesday. the 25-year-old permitted season-low totals in runs (three) and hits (five) while failing to walk a batter in that outing. orlando arcia and travis shaw are both 2-for-5 versus castillo, but the right-hander has limited the remainder of the brewers' roster to going 3-for-30 with 12 strikeouts while posting a 1-0 mark with a 1.98 era in two encounters versus the club last season.
like castillo, suter also authored his best start of the young season in his last outing as he yielded one run on four hits in 5 1/3 innings of a no-decision at st. louis on tuesday. the 28-year-old kept the ball in the park for the second straight trip to the mound and permitted just one walk after issuing three in his previous start. joey votto is 3-for-6 with two doubles against suter, but the left-hander has kept billy hamilton (1-for-7, four strikeouts) and duvall (1-for-6) under wraps.

walk-offs

1. cincinnati's eight-game skid is one short of its longest losing streak of last season.

2. milwaukee rf domingo santana is 8-for-25 with three runs scored during his six-game hitting streak.

3. hamilton, who homered on sunday, batted just .171 with 24 strikeouts in 76 at-bats versus the brewers last season.

Chicago White Sox vs. Oakland Athletics Preview and Predictions 04-16-2018

15th April 2018 by Gracenote
the chicago white sox return from an unscheduled three-day break to continue their road trip monday, when they visit the oakland athletics for the opener of their three-game series. chicago's seven-game trek was reduced to four contests as the final three of its four-game set in minnesota were postponed due to a snowstorm.

the white sox, who have lost eight of 10 after winning their first two games of the season, will be back in action for the first time since suffering a 4-0 loss to the twins on thursday. chicago was limited to three singles in the setback, with tim anderson recording one to extend his hitting streak to five games. oakland looks to begin its first winning streak of 2018 after salvaging the finale of its three-game series in seattle on sunday. jed lowrie belted a two-run homer in the first inning and sean manaea made it stand by working seven strong frames as the athletics posted a 2-1 victory to finish 3-5 on their eight-game road trip.
tv: 10:05 p.m. et, nbcs chicago, nbcs california plus (oakland)
pitching matchup: white sox rh reynaldo lopez (0-1, 0.69 era) vs. athletics rh daniel mengden (1-2, 6.19)

lopez, whose turn on friday in minnesota was scrapped due to inclement weather, has been superb in the early going - allowing two runs (one earned) and four hits with 11 strikeouts over 13 innings in two starts - but has yet to record a victory. the only issue with the 24-year-old dominican has been his control, as he has walked seven batters - including five over seven frames in a loss against detroit on april 8. lopez, who gave up only two hits and an unearned run in the setback, will be facing oakland for the first time in his career.
mengden remains in search of his first career win at home, where he is 0-10 with a 6.45 era in 13 starts. the 25-year-old texan is coming off his initial victory of the season, a triumph over the dodgers in los angeles on wednesday in which he allowed four runs (three earned) and seven hits over five innings. mengden, who has issued only two walks in 16 frames this year, has yet to face chicago in his career.

walk-offs

1. lowrie is 8-for-18 with two homers and seven rbis over his last four games.

2. chicago c welington castillo is expected to be in the lineup monday after missing two contests with a sore right knee.

3. oakland lost inf-of renato nunez on sunday as the 24-year-old venezuelan was claimed off waivers by texas.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. San Diego Padres Preview and Predictions 04-16-2018

15th April 2018 by Gracenote
the los angeles dodgers needed their ace to end a dispiriting three-game losing streak last time out and will try to build on that effort when they visit the san diego padres on monday for the first of three contests. clayton kershaw struck out 12 in seven strong innings and finally got some offensive support as the dodgers rolled to a 7-2 victory over arizona on sunday after giving up 33 runs in three straight defeats.

los angeles had scored a total of three runs in kershaw's first three starts before chris taylor registered a double, a homer and three rbis on sunday as the team won for just the third time in 10 games. hyun-jin ryu tries to give the dodgers back-to-back strong starts when he takes the mound while robbie erlin gets the start for the padres, who have won three straight contests. san diego outscored san francisco 20-6 to win the final three contests of their four-game set and could have all-star first baseman eric hosmer back in the lineup after he sat out the last two games with lower-back tightness. rookie third baseman christian villanueva has made quite an impression, leading the padres with five homers and 11 rbis after belting a solo shot and registering a two-run double in sunday's 10-1 triumph.

pitching matchup: dodgers lh hyun-jin ryu (1-0, 2.79 era) vs. padres lh robbie erlin (0-1, 2.38)

ryu dazzled in his start on tuesday, striking out eight batters while allowing one hit and one walk over six scoreless innings for a 4-0 victory over oakland. the 31-year-old south korean was not nearly as efficient in his 2018 debut on april 2, when he yielded three runs on five hits and five walks over 3 2/3 innings at arizona but avoided a loss. ryu is 4-1 with a 2.57 era in seven career starts versus san diego.
erlin is taking the spot of the suspended luis perdomo in the rotation after making five relief appearances this year, allowing three runs, seven hits and two walks while striking out nine over 11 1/3 innings. the 27-year-old californian came into the season with 30 appearances in the majors and is 8-12 with a 4.49 era in 25 starts during his career. erlin has made two starts and one relief outing against the dodgers, going 1-1 with a 1.17 era.

walk-offs

1. san diego of jose pirela is 14-for-31 with five doubles and seven rbis over his last seven games.

2. the dodgers placed inf logan forsythe (shoulder) on the 10-day disabled list and recalled inf breyvic valera from triple-a oklahoma city.

3. los angeles took 13 of the 19 meetings in 2017 and has not lost a season series to the padres since 2010.

prediction: dodgers 5, padres 3

Houston Astros vs. Seattle Mariners Preview and Predictions 04-16-2018

16th April 2018 by Gracenote
the seattle mariners attempt to shake off their first loss in five contests when they begin a four-game series against the visiting houston astros on monday. seattle scored a total of 29 runs during a four-game winning streak before producing just one in sunday's 2-1 home loss to oakland.

taylor motter provided the run with a solo homer, which was one of only two hits for the mariners in the setback. kyle seager added a single and is 10-for-20 during his five-game hitting streak as he prepares to face houston, which has lost four of five after dropping a 3-1 decision to texas in 10 innings on sunday. the first 21 astros were retired by bartolo colon before carlos correa drew a leadoff walk in the eighth inning, advanced on josh reddick's double and scored on a sacrifice fly by yuli gurriel to forge a 1-1 tie. three-time american league batting champion jose altuve is riding a six-game hitting streak and has recorded at least one hit in 14 of 15 contests since going 0-for-2 on opening day.
tv: 10:10 p.m. et, mlb network, at&t sportsnet southwest (houston), root northwest (seattle)
pitching matchup: astros lh dallas keuchel (0-2, 4.20 era) vs. mariners lh james paxton (0-1, 5.74)

keuchel remains in search of his first win of 2018 as he makes his fourth start. the 30-year-old former cy young award winner lasted only four innings in a loss at minnesota on tuesday, surrendering three runs on six hits and four walks. keuchel has made 15 appearances (14 starts) against seattle in his career, going 8-5 with one complete game and a 2.70 era.
paxton has bounced back from a poor performance in his season debut with two solid outings but has yet to register his first victory of the year. the 29-year-old canadian has given up just two runs in each his last two turns, including a six-inning effort at kansas city on wednesday in which he matched his career high with 10 strikeouts but settled for a no-decision. paxton owns a 3-3 record and 3.38 era in eight lifetime starts against houston.
walk-offs

1. mariners 2b robinson cano has drawn a walk in five consecutive games and reached safely at least once in all 13 contests this year - the longest such streak to start a season of his career.

2. houston's starting pitchers have reached double digits in strikeouts in each of the team's last three games.

3. seattle c mike zunino (oblique) is expected to begin a rehab assignment with single-a modesto on monday.

prediction: astros 5, mariners 3

Monday's NBA Playoffs Betting Preview and Odds

The opening round of the 2018 NBA Playoffs continues Monday night with two games tipping off tonight, including the Warriors looking to win their fifth straight playoff game against the Spurs.

Miami Heat at Philadelphia 76ers (-6.5, 215.5)

TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT, FS Sun (Miami), NBCS Philadelphia

SERIES PRICE (PER PINNACLE):

BETTING ACTION AND LINE MOVES: The Sixers opened as 7-point home favorites and as of Monday morning that number is down to -6.5. According to consensus numbers 72 percent of the side wagers are on the favorites, so this is a little bit of reverse line movement. The total hit betting boards at 216.5 and has been dropped slightly to 215.5.

ABOUT THE HEAT (44-39 SU, 40-37-6 ATS, 38-44-1 O/U): Whiteside has expressed displeasure at times with head coach Erik Spoelstra and the center seemed to display frustration over his limited minutes in Game 1.

ABOUT THE 76ERS (53-30 SU, 48-33-2 ATS, 42-40-1 O/U): With Embiid sidelined, Philadelphia has been thriving on its many quality outside shooters, and the quartet of JJ Redick, Dario Saric, Marco Belinelli and Ersan Ilyasova combined to hit 15-of-23 long-range attempts in Game 1.

INJURY REPORT:

Heat - SG Dion Waiters (Out For Season, Ankle).

76ers - C Joel Embiid (Questionable, Face), SG Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot (Out Indefinitely, Knee).

MATCHUP CHART:

http://i63.tinypic.com/wm15s1.jpg

TRENDS:

* Heat are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 after scoring 100 points or more in their previous game.
* 76ers are 9-1 ATS in their last 10 games following a straight up win of more than 10 points.
* Over is 5-0 in Heat last 5 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
* Over is 5-0 in 76ers last 5 vs. Eastern Conference.
* Home team is 7-1-1 ATS in the last 9 meetings.

San Antonio Spurs at Golden State Warriors (-9.5, 205.5)

The Golden State Warriors came into the postseason injured and slumping but quickly proved they can flip the switch to playoff mode with a dominating Game 1 win over the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday. The Warriors will try to keep the pressure on and get off to another hot start to make it a 2-0 cushion when they host the Spurs in Game 2 on Monday.

Golden State dropped 10 of its last 17 games in the regular season and struggled on defense but tightened things up that end and held the Spurs to 17 first-quarter points to establish a lead it wouldn’t relinquish in Game 1.

SERIES PRICE (PER PINNACLE):

http://i65.tinypic.com/308frpu.jpg

BETTING ACTION AND LINE MOVES: The Warriors opened as 9.5-point home favorites for Game 2 and as of Monday morning that number has not moved. Consensus numbers are showing a fairly even split with 55 percent of the side wagers on the Dubs. The total hit betting boards at 206 and has been dropped slightly to 205.5.

ABOUT THE SPURS (47-36 SU, 42-39-2 ATS, 38-44-1 O/U): San Antonio shot 40 percent from the floor in Game 1 and managed only three offensive rebounds in the 113-92 setback.

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (59-24 SU, 35-47-1 ATS, 39-43-1 O/U): Starting Iguodala over Quinn Cook left Golden State without a true point guard, leading to All-Star forward Kevin Durant running the offense.

INJURY REPORT:

Spurs - SF Kawhi Leonard (Out For Season, Quadricep).

Warriors - PG Stephen Curry (Late April, Knee), SG Patrick McCaw (Out Indefinitely, Back), SF Chris Boucher (Out Indefinitely, Ankle).

MATCHUP CHART:

http://i68.tinypic.com/2552o8y.jpg

TRENDS:

* Spurs are 0-8 ATS in their last 8 road games.
* Over is 5-0-1 in Spurs last 6 road games.
* Over is 3-0-1 in Warriors last 4 home games.
* Over is 5-1-1 in the last 7 meetings in Golden State.

Monday's NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs Betting Preview and Odds

The opening round of the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs continues Monday night with the puck dropping on four games. Home ice has dominated these series except out West where the Sharks won both games in Anaheim and look to put a stranglehold on the series in Game 3.

Boston Bruins at Toronto Maple Leafs (-110, 5.5)

Bruins lead series 2-0.

SERIES PRICE (PER SPORTS INTERACTION):

http://i68.tinypic.com/20j0idf.jpg

LINE HISTORY: The Maple Leafs have been get pumped by Boston and still opened as -118 home chalk. However, money coming in on Boston has driven that line down to -110 or lower at some shops. The total hit the betting board at 5.5 and has held firm.

INJURY REPORT:

Bruins - C Riley Nash (Questionable, Ear), RW Tommy Wingels (Questionable, Upper Body), D Brandon Carlo (Out For Season, Ankle), LW Anders Bjork (Out For Season, Shoulder).

Maple Leafs - C Leo Komarov (Questionable, Lower Body), C Nazem Kadri (Eligible to return April 21, Suspension), LW Joffrey Lupul (I-R, Conditioning).

* Home team is 4-0 in the last 4 meetings.

Tampa Bay Lightning at New Jersey Devils (+120, 6)

Lightning lead series 2-0.

ABOUT THE LIGHTNING: Alex Killorn has often saved his best hockey for the postseason and he is off to another strong start with three goals in the first two games of the series after scoring twice Saturday. “You play all season for this,” Killorn, who has 18 goals and 36 points in 49 career playoff games, told reporters. “Playoff hockey is great. There are a few more cameras around, a couple more people watching, but I think we like that pressure.” Forwards Nikita Kucherov and Tyler Johnson have also scored twice in the first two games while defenseman Ryan McDonagh and left wing Ondrej Palat each boast three assists.

ABOUT THE DEVILS: Cory Schneider, who has not won a game since Dec. 27 while struggling with injuries and an .863 save percentage since, stopped all 10 shots he faced in relief of Keith Kinkaid on Saturday and could get the start Monday. “It was good to give him an opportunity to get in there,” coach John Hynes told reporters, “and I thought he came in and made huge saves, looked solid, so that’s a positive for us moving forward.” Hynes went with 11 forwards and seven defensemen Saturday while inserting blue liner Damon Severson (three shots, 16:41 of ice time) into the lineup and hinted there could be more changes for Game 3.

SERIES PRICE (PER SPORTS INTERACTION):

http://i63.tinypic.com/33z4hu8.jpg

Nashville Predators at Colorado Avalanche (+140, 5.5)

Predators lead series 2-0.

SERIES PRICE (PER SPORTS INTERACTION):

http://i66.tinypic.com/34zybnc.jpg

LINE HISTORY: The Predators opened as +120 road chalk and that number wasn't high enough as money rolled in on Nashville pushing the line as high as +140. The total opened at 6 and has been bet down slightly to 5.5.

Anaheim Ducks at San Jose Sharks (-140, 5)

Sharks lead series 2-0.

ABOUT THE DUCKS: Anaheim, which entered the postseason with the fewest goals of any of the 16 teams, now must attempt to duplicate last season's series against Edmonton, when it dropped the first two at home before rally to prevail in seven games. “Sure, we can draw on that,” said Ducks defenseman Hampus Lindholm, who scored one goal and set up another Saturday. “People have not been believing in us all year but we know what we’re capable of.” Rickard Rakell, the team's leading goal (34) and overall scorer, has been limited to two shots on goal through the first two games.

SERIES PRICE (PER SPORTS INTERACTION):

http://i68.tinypic.com/ny791h.jpg

LINE HISTORY: The Sharks opened as high as -161 home chalk and that number was too high and money coming in on Anaheim has dropped that moneyline down as low as -135 at some books. The total hit the betting board at 5 and has yet to move off the opening number.

INJURY REPORT:

Ducks - D Cam Fowler (Mid May, Shoulder), RW Patrick Eaves (Out For Season, Illness).

Sharks - C Joe Thornton (Questionable, Knee), RW Barclay Goodrow (Questionable, Upper Body).

MATCHUP CHART:

TRENDS:

* Sharks are 8-2 in their last 10 games following a win.
* Under is 7-1 in Ducks last 8 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600.
* Under is 6-0-1 in the last 7 meetings in San Jose.

Free Pick on Marlins/Yankees OVER
I'm recommending a play on the OVER in Monday's MLB interleague action between the Yankees and Marlins. The series is being played at Yankee Stadium, where the ball flies out of the park. New York has played 6 home games so far this season and the averaged combined score in those games is 11.1. The conditions for today's game will be ideal for a high-scoring game, as the wind is expected to be blowing out to left at close to 15 mph.
A big reason this total isn't higher is because the Yankees have Luis Severino on the mound against a bad Miami offense. However, Severino was far from sharp in his last start, giving up 5 runs on 8 hits and 3 walks in just 5 innings. Even if he pitches well here, the Marlins figure to score a few runs. On the flip side, it wouldn't come as a surprise at all if the Yankees covered this total on their own. Miami is sending out Caleb Smith, who has a 4.73 ERA and 1.575 WHIP in 3 starts. Take the OVER!

MLB | Phillies vs Braves
Play on: Braves +118 at BMaker

As a good strikeout pitcher, Foltynewicz generally puts bats to the bench in his games for Atlanta, as shown by his 18Ks in 15 innings over 3 starts. 28 yr old Freddie Freeman has more than enough of an arm to play 1B - and is a substantial offensive weapon with a .320 avg, 2HRs, and 12 RBI through 4.15.18. Atlanta has won 6 of their last 10 games - at home they will own this game. The very real issue with Philadelphia is that they are a bottom level hitting team with poor plate discipline. With over 123 strikeouts, and only batting .220 as a team. And obviously - the Philly rotation is still a big concern - with a very low strikeout ratio. Philadelphia's Carlos Santana has been playing really down this year after hitting .259 in 2017 - with a horrid .167 avg and a .259 OBP. On the road the Phils have been far worse than when at home. Braves are 7-3 in their last 10 home games. Atlanta wins this one on Monday night!

Jack’s Free Pick Monday: San Diego Padres +130
The San Diego Padres are feeling good about themselves with three straight victories coming into this series with the Los Angeles Dodgers. I think they are showing excellent value as +130 home underdogs here tonight in Game 1.
Robbie Erlin is 5-3 with a 2.71 ERA in 17 appearances (13 starts) at Petco Park. He isn’t getting the respect he deserves from oddsmakers tonight. Erlin is 1-1 with a 1.23 ERA and 0.682 WHIP in two career starts against the Dodgers, giving up just 2 earned runs and 10 base runners in 14 2/3 innings.
Hyun-Jin Ryu has been a major disappointment in a Dodgers uniform. He went 5-9 with a 3.77 ERA and 1.366 WHIP in 24 starts last season. The Dodgers have been a disappointment overall this season as they are off to just a 5-9 start. They are hitting just .239 and scoring 3.9 runs per game, including .221 and 3.0 runs per game on the road.
San Diego is 20-9 (+18.8 units) vs. an NL team with a batting average of .245 or worse over the last two seasons. The Dodgers are 0-7 (-10.7 units) as a favorite of -125 to -175 this season. The Dodgers are 2-9 in Ryu’s last 11 starts vs. division opponents. Ryu is 1-8 (-8.1 units) against the money line in road night games over the last two years. Bet the Padres Monday.

Colorado is in must-win mode down 2-0 to Nashville. The Avalanche have not been overwhelmed in losing the first two games. They held early leads in both games. Coming home should be big for the Avalanche, who have won 20 of their last 27 games at Pepsi Center. As good as the Predators are they don't have a superstar scorer the caliber of Nathan MacKinnon. Nashville is fat and happy up 2-0. The young Avalanche know they're dead if they lose this one. The Predators are going to have to take the Avalanche's best punch in order to win this game. The price is large enough to back the home 'dog. (Editor's note: Stephen Nover has won 86 percent of his last nine NHL totals and has two Stanley Cup totals plays going today. Don't miss either as Stephen is solidly beating the NHL for a third straight season!)

And getting Reynaldo Lopez at this kind of price is too good to pass up. Lopez has posted a 0.69 ERA and 0.85 WHIP in his two starts this season. Daniel Mengden has never had success at the major league level in any season. He is 1-2 with a 6.19 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in his three starts this season. The A’s are 2-7 in Mengden’s last nine home starts. Chicago is 8-3 in its last 11 meetings in Oakland. Give me the White Sox.

MLB | Rangers vs Rays
Play on: Rays -1½ +125 at MyBookie

10* FREE MLB PICK (Rays -1.5, +125)
I'll take my chances with Tampa Bay winning by at least 2 runs in Monday's home game against the Rangers. The Rays were just swept by the Phillies at home and have lost 4 straight overall, which I believe will have them 100% focused on getting this new series with Texas off to a strong start. For me, this all comes down to the starting pitching matchup. Tampa Bay sends out Blake Snell, who is better than he gets credit for. The Rangers will send out Martin Perez, who has been atrocious in his first two starts. Perez has allowed 11 runs on 19 hits and 4 walks with just 3 strikeouts in 8 1/3 innings of work. Hard to see Perez just flipping a switch here. Great spot here for the Rays to put up a big number and with Snell on the mound they should cruise to a win. Give me Tampa Bay -1.5 (+125)!

NHL | Predators vs Avalanche
Play on: Predators -155 at 5Dimes

DMack's Free Play for Monday, April 16, 2018 is on the Nashville Predators
The Preds won the first two games of this series in dominating fashion as you might imagine that they might having won 13 of the L16 in the series over just the last three years. The Preds headed on the up escalator in winning 5 of 6 after a flat spot. The Avalanche limped in the playoffs and are now on a 2-7 run since 3/26 without much in the way for prospects of turning things around. Pred goalie Rinne hasn't played especially well or things would really be ugly. Take Nashville.

Nashville vs Colorado Free Pick April 16, 2018

I bet on the Predators in both the first two games of this series, and one of the things I talked about was how well Nashville plays on home ice. The Preds aren't quite as dominant away from home, and given how competitive this series has been so far, I think there's value backing Colorado as a home dog in Game 3. The Avs actually have one of the best home record in the Western Conference, going 28-11-2 at the Pepsi Center. Jonathan Bernier was rock solid at home, posting a record of 13-4 with a 2.34 GAA. The Avs also boast top special teams units, with the league's #4 ranked penalty kill and 8th ranked power play. Nathan McKinnon finished second in the NHL in points (per game) with 97 points in 74 games. He did the majority of the damage at home, scoring 27 goals and adding 40 assists in 39 games. Colorado should give the Predators all they can handle here in Game 3.

Take COL +1.5.

MLB | Nationals vs Mets
Play on: Mets -165 at betonline

#MLB FREE PICK FROM MIKE LUNDIN
The New York Mets are off to their best start in franchise history and recorded a 3-2 victory against Milwaukee on Sunday. They'll host Washington Nationals in the opener of a three-game series at Citi Field tonight, and I think we're getting a reasonable price on the home team.
Jacob deGrom (2-0, 3.06 ERA) will take the ball for NYM. He's coming off a sub-par outing at Miami (gave up four runs through six frames), but held the Nats to a pair of runs (one earned) in six innings of an 8-2 triumph at Washington on April 5. deGrom is 6-4 with a 2.68 ERA in 13 career starts against the Nationals and has the current roster limited to a .213 AVG.
The Nats hand the ball to Jeremy Hellickson who will make his season debut. Hellickson is 2-4 with a 7.81 ERA in eight career starts against the Mets.
Washington has been outscored 58-38 during a 3-9 spell. A breakthrough is unlikely against the the hottest team in baseball.
Free pick on NY Mets.

Your Monday freebie is the Warriors to head to San Antonio up 2-games to none, as Golden State once again stretches it against the Spurs.

No Steph Curry, but no problem over the weekend, as coach Steve Kerr inserted Andre Iguodala as starting point guard, and it paid dividends as Golden State cruised to a 21-point win, 113-92! By starting Iggy, the Warriors were able to run their offense through Kevin Durant - 24 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists - as Durant continues to be a mismatch for the Spurs.

San Antonio did well to make it into the postseason yet again, but this is an older team, a team that has played without their number one player - Kawhi Leonard - pretty much all season long, a team that will once again get rocked on the road this Monday night.

Golden State swept San Antonio out of the postseason last year, covering in all 4 of their wins, and the Dubs are now on a 6-2 against the spread roll the past 8 times they have faced San Antone.

Go ahead and lay the wood tonight with Golden State.

My free play is on the Jays winning this big, as the rout will be on by the fifth inning.

IMPORTANT: As you know every single Run Line play and Total wager will automatically list the scheduled starting pitchers at the time of the wager. But with this game I am not concerned with who is pitching for either team tonight and want you playing this game on the Run Line regardless. That said, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to be sure you have action even if one of the pitchers scheduled to start is scratched, by betting the game over again in the event that takes place.

The Royals arrive north of the border at 3-10, their worst start over 13 games since 2012 when they also opened the campaign with three wins. Manager Ned Yost said his team is battling and he doesn't fault the players' effort, it's just a matter of getting in a groove and rolling with it.

Problem is, you can't do that in Toronto, where the Jays tend to find its own groove at the plate.

In eight of the last nine years, the Blue Jays have finished in MLB's top seven for hitting home runs in their own park. Last year was the lone season they did not. They know this has always been an advantage, and this year they need to get back on track inside Rogers Centre.

The Royals bring a 4.48 ERA to Toronto, and even worse, that number swells to 4.89 on the road. Kansas City has also given up the 10th most home runs (86) on the highway.

Tonight will be trouble, as the Jays look to tee off. Lay the Run Line.

Cracks me up how many people have forgotten how good the Boston Bruins were at the end of the season, and are actually leaning toward the Toronto Maple Leafs coming back in this series.

The Bruins are clearly the better playing team, and have a chance to serve the dagger in a very important game - much like we saw the Vegas Golden Knights do last night in Los Angeles.

After dominating the first two games of this series, outscoring the Maple Leafs 12-4, you're going to see Boston playing with a ton of confidence, from David Krejci, to Patrice Bergeron, to Torey Krug, to Zdeno Chara, to Tuukka Rask.

To put in perspective how strong the first two games were for Boston, it was 1-2-1 vs. Toronto in the regular season, when the Maple Leafs outscored the Bruins by a 12-10 margin. Again, Boston has outscored the Leafs, 12-4.

The Bruins are fired up, and want nothing more than to sweep this series and move on. They know the important game is tonight, and they can't afford to let the Leafs gain any momentum in Game 3. It would behoove Boston to let Game 4 go by the wayside, if that's the case, and win Game 5 in Beantown. But the Bruins can't lose tonight.

The Bruins enter tonight’s game with an all-time record of 24-7 in best-of-7 series when they have led a series 2-0. They have a 20-10 record in Game 3s when leading a series 2-0.

Take Boston tonight, as it treats this like a do-or-die.

About the only thing positive I can see for the New Jersey Devils this Monday night is the fact they will get to play this game versus the Tampa Bay Lightning on their home ice.

Tampa has lit the lamp 10 times in the first 2 games played, and they hold a 2-0 series lead as they lace up the skates for this Monday night contest on Devils ice.

New Jersey is shell-shocked right now, and coach John Hynes may turn towards netminder Corey Schneider in favor of regular keeper Keith Kinkaid who has not been able to keep Tampa Bay off the scoreboard thus far.

The bottom line is the Lightning are the # 1 seed in the Eastern Conference for a reason, and this team does have the playoff pedigree to not rest on their laurels here as they look to put this series in a vice-grip tonight.

With the postseason carrying on into the month of June, it is critical that teams end their series' as soon as possible, and then get a few days of rest.

Perfect spot tonight to lay a little road juice and back the Lightning to take the commanding 3-0 series lead.

4* TAMPA BAY

This Tampa Bay-New Jersey series is far from over, and yet so close to getting away from the Devils.

If the Lightning win in New Jersey tonight, the series is over. But if the Devils can knock off Tampa Bay, this 1-8 matchup becomes intriguing.

Top-seeded Tampa Bay lost all three meetings with No. 8 New Jersey, which does match up well with the Lightning.

The Devils can challenge Tampa Bay netminder Andrei Vasilevskiy with Hart Trophy-candidate Taylor Hall and star rookie Nico Hischier, who opened the scoring for the Devils in Game 2, 13:38 into the second period.

The question mark is in goal. Will it be Keith Kincaid or Cory Schneider?

Kinkaid started in net in Game 2, but was pulled at 13:12 of the second period. During his time in net, Kinkaid stopped 10 out of 15 shots. Schneider relieved Kinkaid, for his first playoff action since the 2013 playoffs, when he played for the Vancouver Canucks. Schneider stopped all 10 shots that he faced.

Only once in history have the Devils won a series when falling behind 2-0. That was in 1994 against the Boston Bruins. New Jersey switched goalies that season. Will the Devils do it again? After Schneider played well in the third period of Game 2, he could get the nod, shaking things up.

No matter what coach John Hines decides, the one thing they need to remember and feed off of is they were undefeated against Tampa Bay in the regular season.

2* DEVILS
