Milwaukee Brewers vs. Pittsburgh Pirates Preview and Predictions 06-18-2018

17th June 2018 by Gracenote
the milwaukee brewers' rally fell short in the finale of a homestand, sending them into monday's opener of a three-game series at the pittsburgh pirates on a sour note. the brewers took the opener of a three-game set against the philadelphia phillies by a 13-2 margin before falling saturday and then dropping a 10-9 decision in the last meeting.

the brewers scored four times in the ninth and saw christian yelich's long drive caught for the final out, capping a 3-3 homestand. "we thought he went deep, the way it looked off the bat," first baseman eric thames - who slugged two homers in the loss - told reporters. "we were close to tying that game." the pirates won three in a row before sunday's 8-6 loss to the cincinnati reds. they will try to bounce back behind struggling right-hander trevor williams, who takes on milwaukee's jhoulys chacin in the opener.
tv: 7:05 p.m. et, fs wisconsin (milwaukee), at&t sportsnet pittsburgh

pitching matchup: brewers rh jhoulys chacin (6-1, 3.32 era) vs. pirates rh trevor williams (5-4, 4.38)
three of chacin's last five outings have been of the scoreless variety, including a six-inning effort in a win over the chicago cubs on wednesday. he has won his last six decisions and opponents are hitting .227 overall against the 30-year-old. chacin limited the pirates to one run in six innings in their one encounter this season to improve to 2-3 with a 4.76 era in seven career matchups.

williams lasted just three innings in each of his last two starts, giving up 12 runs (seven earned) and 10 hits with four walks in that span. that stretch extended his streak of outings without a quality start to five, during which the arizona state product is 0-2 with an 8.57 era. orlando arcia and domingo santana are both 3-for-6 against williams, who has a 3.29 era in three career games (two starts) against milwaukee.
walk-offs

1. pirates rf gregory polanco was 3-for-28 over a span of 11 games before going 3-for-3 on sunday.

2. brewers 1b jesus aguilar was 4-for-9 with two homers and five rbis in the series against the phillies.
3. pittsburgh c francisco cervelli is 0-for-13 over a five-game stretch.

New York Yankees vs. Washington Nationals Preview and Predictions 06-18-2018

17th June 2018 by Gracenote
washington nationals rookie juan soto launched a titanic blast to highlight his two-homer performance in last week's encounter with the new york yankees. the 19-year-old soto will get another look at the visiting yankees (46-21) on monday when the clubs resume a suspended game from may 15 that was tied at 3 in the sixth inning before playing a full contest as a result of a postponement from may 16.

soto, who was playing with double-a harrisburg during that may series, would love to recapture the form from prior to this past weekend's series sweep at the hands of toronto, against which he went 2-for-13 with six strikeouts. fellow outfielder bryce harper is mired in a 1-for-20 stretch with eight strikeouts in his last six games for the nationals (37-31) and is 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in his career versus sonny gray, who will start monday's latter contest. aaron hicks belted his second homer of new york's four-game series versus tampa bay, but its bid for a four-game sweep was averted by sunday's 3-1 loss. while neither team divulged the starting pitcher for the suspended game, washington's erick fredde will oppose gray in the rematch of wednesday's tilt in the bronx.
tv: 5:05 p.m. et (suspended game), mlb network, yes (new york), masn (washington)
pitching matchup: yankees rh sonny gray (4-4, 4.98 era) vs. nationals rh erick fedde (0-1, 5.91)

gray has yet to record a decision while posting a 4.74 era in three career encounters versus washington, including his four-run, seven-hit performance in five innings in last week's meeting. the 28-year-old served up a three-run homer to soto in the fourth inning and struck out just one batter, his lowest total since a 3 1/3-frame stint versus toronto on april 20. trea turner (3-for-5) and adam eaton (4-for-11) have gotten their licks in on gray, although harper is 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.
fedde will get his second straight look at the yankees after surrendering two homers and four runs total over five innings on wednesday. the 2014 first-round pick will make his sixth major-league start and third this season as he pitches in place of injured fireballer stephen strasburg. fedde posted a 3-2 mark with a 4.76 era in 11 starts with triple-a syracuse before getting recalled last week prior to the last meeting with new york.
walk-offs

1. new york ss didi gregorius, who had six hits versus tampa bay over the weekend, belted two homers against washington in a 3-0 win on tuesday.

2. nationals cf michael a. taylor went 5-for-7 with four stolen bases and two runs scored in his last two games.
3. yankees of giancarlo stanton had three singles in wednesday's loss to washington and also had a hit and run scored in the suspended game.

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Philadelphia Phillies Preview and Predictions 06-18-2018

18th June 2018 by Gracenote
after wrapping a homestand with a victory to halt a season-high four-game slide, the st. louis cardinals take to the road as they begin a seven-game trek on monday with the first of three contests against the philadelphia phillies. the cardinals went 2-4 during their six-game stretch at busch stadium, beginning it with a win over san diego and ending it with sunday's 5-0 triumph over the chicago cubs.

matt carpenter, who has hit safely in nine of his last 11 contests, belted a solo homer and tommy pham scored twice while extending his hitting streak to 11 games with a single as st. louis saw yadier molina tie the major-league record for games caught for one team (1,756), which was set by hall-of-famer gabby hartnett of the cubs. philadelphia aims for its first three-game winning streak since mid-may after withstanding a ninth-inning rally and hanging on for a 10-9 victory at milwaukee on sunday. maikel franco went 2-for-3 with a homer and four rbis for the phillies, who have won consecutive series for the first time since going 8-1 against miami, cincinnati and tampa bay from april 5-15. odubel herrera collected three hits and scored three runs while nick williams delivered a two-run single to improve to 6-for-13 with four rbis over his last five contests.
tv: 7:05 p.m. et, fs midwest (st. louis), nbcs philadelphia
pitching matchup: cardinals rh miles mikolas (7-2, 2.43 era) vs. phillies rh nick pivetta (4-6, 4.25)

after going 6-0 over the first two months of the season, mikolas has lost two of his three starts in june - including a setback against san diego on tuesday in which he allowed three runs and six hits over six innings. the 29-year-old floridian has yet to lose on the road this year, going 3-0 with a 3.41 era in six turns. mikolas made his only career appearance against the phillies in relief on may 11, 2012, when he yielded two runs on two hits and as many walks in one inning at philadelphia while with san diego.
pivetta's losing streak reached four starts on wednesday, when he was tagged for six runs on eight hits and three walks over five innings against colorado. the 25-year-old canadian has lost back-to-back turns at home after scattering four hits over seven scoreless frames versus atlanta at citizens bank park on may 21. pivetta made two starts against st. louis as a rookie last season, going 0-1 while giving up seven runs in 11 innings.
walk-offs

1. herrera has gone 7-for-18 with two homers and three rbis over his last four games.

2. st. louis 1b jose martinez is expected to return from paternity leave on monday while rhp greg holland (hip) will accompany the team on its road trip and likely be activated from the disabled list during the trek.
3. philadelphia on saturday placed luis garcia (wrist) on the 10-day disabled list, optioned mark leiter jr. to triple-a lehigh valley and recalled fellow rhps yacksel rios and jake thompson from the ironpigs.

Chicago White Sox vs. Cleveland Indians Preview and Predictions 06-18-2018

17th June 2018 by Gracenote
the cleveland indians avoided a sweep sunday and will try to build off the much-needed victory when they open a three-game series with the visiting chicago white sox on monday. the indians had dropped five straight to the minnesota twins - including the first two in their weekend set - before picking up a 4-1 win in the finale sunday afternoon.

yan gomes' three-run double was the difference for cleveland, which has won eight of its last 11 at home. yonder alonso had four hits in a four-game split against the white sox last week and is expected to return from the family medical emergency list for the indians. beginning with a loss in the final game of last week's encounter with cleveland, chicago has dropped four in a row. it left eight runners on base in a 3-1 loss to the detroit tigers on sunday.
tv: 7:10 p.m. et, nbcs chicago plus, sportstime ohio (cleveland)

pitching matchup: white sox rh dylan covey (3-1, 2.29 era) vs. indians rh trevor bauer (5-5, 2.69)

covey is 3-0 with a 1.84 era since being recalled from the minors may 19, and he matched his longest start with seven strong innings in a win over the indians on wednesday. that allowed him to get some revenge for his shortest outing at cleveland on may 28, when he let up five runs (two earned) in 4 1/3 frames. michael brantley and jose ramirez are a combined 7-for-11 against the 26-year-old covey.
bauer has struck out at least 11 batters in each of his last four starts, including 12 in a tough loss at chicago on wednesday. he held the white sox to three runs in 7 2/3 innings in the setback while yielding just four hits. yolmer sanchez is 1-for-22 with 11 strikeouts against the 27-year-old bauer, who is 6-3 with a 3.55 era in his career against the white sox.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Chicago Cubs Preview and Predictions 06-18-2018

18th June 2018 by Gracenote
the los angeles dodgers hope to continue their ascent toward first place in the national league west when they open a six-game road trip monday against the surging chicago cubs. the dodgers suffered a 4-1 loss against san francisco on sunday to finish a 6-2 homestand but have posted 21 wins in their last 28 contests to pull within 1 1/2 games of arizona for the top spot in the division.

joc pederson is among the major-league leaders with seven homers in june while going 13-for-30 and kike hernandez has hit safely in six consecutive games (7-for-19) for los angeles, which owns the best ops (.899) in baseball this month. kenta maeda makes his second start since missing two weeks with a hip injury for the dodgers, while the cubs counter with tyler chatwood in the series opener between the two teams with the most regular-season wins since 2015. chicago missed a chance to move into first place in the nl central on sunday, managing just four hits in a 5-0 loss at st. louis to spoil its hopes for a sweep, but the team is 14-6 in in its last 20 contests. chicago could be without infielder javier baez for the series opener after he was hit by a pitch in the setback and left with a left elbow contusion that will require x-rays.
tv: 8:05 p.m. et, sportsnet la (los angeles), nbcs chicago
pitching matchup: dodgers rh kenta maeda (4-4, 3.61 era) vs. cubs rh tyler chatwood (3-5, 4.12)

maeda put together his two best starts of the season - allowing four hits and striking out 20 over 14 2/3 innings - in late may but is winless in his last two turns. the 30-year-old native of japan, who recorded only three strikeouts on those two outings, gave up two runs on five hits and three walks over five frames in a no-decision versus texas on wednesday. maeda, who will be facing the cubs for the first time, has registered 69 strikeouts in 57 1/3 innings this year and is limiting right-handed hitters to a .196 average.
chatwood is winless in his last six outings after giving up four runs on five hits and two walks over five innings in a loss at milwaukee on tuesday. the 28-year-old californian has not completed more than 5 1/3 frames in any of his last eight starts and has posted a 5.19 era over the last two months after producing a 2.83 mark in april. yasmani grandal is 6-for-11 with a homer versus chatwood, who is 5-9 with a 4.07 era in 15 career appearances (14 starts) against the dodgers.
walk-offs

1. chicago of albert almora jr. recorded a pair of hits in sunday's loss and is 18-for-50 with six rbis this month.

2. los angeles 3b justin turner has hit safely in his last five contests, notching two doubles and a home run in that span.
3. cubs 1b anthony rizzo has gone five games without an rbi after recording 23 in his previous 22 contests with an at-bat.

Tampa Bay Rays vs. Houston Astros Preview and Predictions 06-18-2018

17th June 2018 by Gracenote
the red-hot houston astros look to surpass their top win streak from last season when they bid for their 12th consecutive victory on monday in the opener of a three-game series versus the visiting tampa bay rays (33-38). the astros (48-25) completed a perfect 10-game road trip with sweeps against texas, oakland and kansas city heading into the opener of their nine-game homestand.

carlos correa homered for the third time in six outings to highlight his fourth multi-hit performance in that span in houston's 7-4 triumph over kansas city on sunday. the 23-year-old also has eight rbis and as many runs scored in his last six games while hitting safely in eight of his last nine overall. while the astros' sizzling stretch has them atop the american league west, the rays snapped a three-game skid by scoring all of their runs in the second to post a 3-1 victory over the new york yankees. matt duffy's two-run single highlighted his eighth third-hit performance of the season heading into a tilt versus monday starter gerrit cole, against whom he is just 1-for-6 in his career.
tv: 8:10 p.m. et, fs sports sun (tampa bay), at&t sportsnet southwest (houston)
pitching matchup: rays rh ryne stanek (1-1, 2.55 era) vs. astros rh gerrit cole (8-1, 2.40)

Texas Rangers vs. Kansas City Royals Preview and Predictions 06-18-2018

17th June 2018 by Gracenote
the kansas city royals sit in last place in the american league central and are not showing any sign that a turnaround might be in the works. the royals will try to snap a six-game slide and win for just the second time in their last 14 contests when they host the texas rangers on monday in the opener of a three-game series.

kansas city had the misfortune of running into the defending champion houston astros over the weekend and were outscored 24-9 in the three-game series. the royals pitching staff gave up at least seven runs in each of the last four games and leads the majors in runs allowed (398) while owning the worst team era (5.37). the rangers are only slightly better on the mound and are fighting through their own rough stretch with losses in seven of the last nine games, but won the last two against colorado at home. texas will try to keep kansas city in the loss column with ageless veteran bartolo colon while the royals send fellow right-hander ian kennedy to the mound in search of a rare win.
tv: 8:15 p.m. et, fs southwest (texas), fs kansas city
pitching matchup: rangers rh bartolo colon (3-4, 4.94 era) vs. royals rh ian kennedy (1-6, 5.13)

colon was hammered last time out at the los angeles dodgers, serving up eight runs on nine hits and a walk over 3 1/3 innings to suffer the loss. the 45-year-old was reached for at least six earned runs in three of his last five outings and has served up 19 home runs in 74 2/3 innings. colon posted a quality start against the royals on may 26, yielding three runs on five hits and a pair of walks across seven frames without factoring in the decision.
kennedy posted his best start of the season on tuesday against cincinnati but could not get enough run support to earn the win and was left out of the decision despite scattering three hits across eight scoreless innings. the california native is winless in his last 12 starts but yielded just one run in his last two turns. kennedy went up against colon on may 26 and was also left out of the decision while allowing two runs on five hits and three walks over five frames.

New York Mets vs. Colorado Rockies Preview and Predictions 06-18-2018

17th June 2018 by Gracenote
two teams that have struggled mightily following promising starts meet monday as the new york mets visit the colorado rockies for the opener of their four-game series. the rockies have lost 12 of their last 16 games and hit a new low sunday, when closer wade davis gave up four runs in the ninth inning of a 13-12 interleague loss to texas.

the mets improved to 2-4 on their 10-game road trip with sunday's 5-3 win over arizona after staging a four-run rally in the ninth, which was highlighted by brandon nimmo's two-out homer and asdrubal cabrera's solo blast. nimmo continued to impress with three hits from the leadoff spot while right fielder jay bruce returned to the starting lineup after missing three games with a sore back and went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. colorado dropped two of three to the rangers over the weekend despite recording 15 hits in sunday's loss - including three from gerardo parra, who doubled twice and collected four rbis. the rockies are 4-11 this month and need better results from a bullpen that was viewed as a strength early in the season but faltered again sunday, allowing seven runs over 3 1/3 innings.
tv: 8:40 p.m. et, sny (new york), at&t sportsnet-rocky mountain (colorado)
pitching matchup: mets rh jacob degrom (4-2, 1.55 era) vs. rockies lh tyler anderson (4-1, 4.48)

degrom leads the majors with a 0.87 era since april 21, registering 83 strikeouts against 17 walks in 10 starts during that stretch. the floridian was a hard-luck loser on wednesday, when he allowed one run with seven strikeouts and no walks over seven innings in a 2-0 setback against atlanta. nolan arenado is 2-for-14 against degrom, who turns 30 on tuesday and owns a 3-0 record and 0.99 era in five career starts against colorado.
anderson matched his longest outing of the season on wednesday, allowing one run while striking out six over seven innings in a 7-2 win over philadelphia. the 28-year-old native of las vegas has gone 1-1 with a 5.14 era in five starts at coors field this season, compared to 3-0 with a 4.08 era in nine road outings. anderson is making his first start against the mets since settling for a no-decision on july 28, 2016, when he allowed one run over six frames.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Los Angeles Angels Preview and Predictions 06-18-2018

17th June 2018 by Gracenote
the los angeles angels and arizona diamondbacks both thought they would end the weekend on high notes, only to watch late leads slip away. both teams will try to bounce back from tough losses when the angels host the diamondbacks on monday in the opener of their two-game interleague series.

los angeles is trying to find enough healthy arms to get within shouting distance of houston and seattle in the american league west, but the bullpen is showing signs of wear. the angels' relief corps surrendered a lead in saturday's 6-4 setback and faltered again the following day, wasting eight strong innings from starter andrew heaney as it allowed two runs in the ninth to tie it before falling 6-5 in 11 innings. the diamondbacks had to settle for a split of a four-game series against the new york mets this weekend when closer brad boxberger served up four runs and four hits - two homers - in the ninth inning of a 5-3 setback on sunday. arizona ace zack greinke will try to keep it out of boxberger's hands on monday, while jaime barria gets the call for the angels.
tv: 10:07 p.m. et, espn, fs arizona, fs west (los angeles)
pitching matchup: diamondbacks rh zack greinke (5-5, 3.87 era) vs. angels rh jaime barria (5-2, 2.61)

greinke suffered a loss to pittsburgh on wednesday, when he surrendered five runs on as many hits and four walks in 4 2/3 innings. the veteran has not completed seven frames in any of his last six outings and could not make it through six in either of the last two turns. grienke is facing the angels for the first time since sept. 7, 2015, when he notched a win after allowing three runs in six innings.
barria had a string of five straight starts without a loss come to an end at seattle on tuesday, when he was charged with three runs - two earned - and eight hits in five innings. the 21-year-old panamanian kept texas scoreless over six frames in his previous major-league outing on june 1. barria is making his third career interleague start after picking up a win at colorado on may 9 and losing to san francisco on april 22.

Miami Marlins vs. San Francisco Giants Preview and Predictions 06-18-2018

17th June 2018 by Gracenote
the miami marlins are winners of five of their last seven games, which includes a series victory over the san francisco giants at home. the giants will try to get some revenge when they play host to the marlins in the opener of a three-game series on monday.

miami began its nine-game road trip by taking two of three from the major league-worst baltimore orioles over the weekend but fly across the country with a sour taste after suffering a 10-4 loss on sunday. the positive for the marlins was an end to the power drought from first baseman justin bour, who homered twice after going 19 straight games without a blast. a pair of home runs could be all it takes to get the better of the giants, who avoided a three-game sweep at the rival los angeles dodgers over the weekend with a 4-1 victory on sunday but totaled seven runs in the series. san francisco will try to get the bats going on monday against marlins lefty caleb smith while countering with rookie andrew suarez.

tv: 10:15 p.m. et, fs florida (miami), nbcs bay area (san francisco)
pitching matchup: marlins lh caleb smith (5-6, 3.75 era) vs. giants lh andrew suarez (2-4, 4.92)
smith is making his second consecutive start against san francisco after allowing three runs on eight hits over 6 1/3 innings at home on wednesday without factoring in the decision. the texas native surrendered three or fewer earned runs in eight of his last 10 outings and is limiting opponents to a .213 batting average. smith owns 83 strikeouts in 72 total innings while yielding just 56 hits.
suarez went up against smith on wednesday and also did not factor in the decision while allowing two runs on five hits and two walks across five innings. the 25-year-old failed to complete six innings in four of his last five starts and is 1-1 in that span. suarez is stronger at home, where he owns a 1-2 record with a 3.55 era and a 0.83 whip.

walk-offs

1. the giants reportedly signed no. 2 overall draft pick c joey bart to a $7.03 million bonus.

2. marlins inf miguel rojas (hand) sat out the last two games and is day-to-day.
3. san francisco lhp will smith did not allow a run in any of his last nine appearances, spanning nine innings.

# 4 SACRED WARRIOR 5/2

# 2 HONORED ENEMY 7/2

# 5 COLD MOON 9/2

I like SACRED WARRIOR here. This pick will feel the med change - with second time Lasix today. He has a good opportunity for this event as trainer, Kemper, has solid win rate with horses going this distance. Ought to compete solidly in the early speed contest which bodes well with this group of horses. HONORED ENEMY - Change in Lasix (with second time Lasix) may be the key to a turnaround. Can't overlook the connections here, a 16 winning percentage, one of the most competitive at getting into the winner's circle. COLD MOON - Bettors have been noting speed increases from entrants changing equipment (blinkers on today). Gonzalez will almost certainly be able to get this gelding to break out sharply in this competition.

#7 FEARLESS MAJESTY (ML=3/1)
#5 DA WINNER IS (ML=6/1)

FEARLESS MAJESTY - Have to give this gelding a good shot. Ran a solid outing last time around the track within the last 30 days. A repeat of that recent effort on June 2nd where he garnered a figure of 78 looks good enough to score in this affair. DA WINNER IS - Entered a $5,000 Claiming race at Laurel in the last race and raced on the mud finishing sixth. Have to do better in this field.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 NOW WE ARE FREE (ML=2/1), #2 NICARADALIC ROCKS (ML=4/1), #1 CAN'T CATCH ME NOW (ML=8/1),

NOW WE ARE FREE - Don't believe this racer will make an impact in today's race. That last speed rating was mediocre when compared with today's Equibase class figure. NICARADALIC ROCKS - Tough to put your dough on the win end of any horse that finishes second and third as often as this horse does. Will not be easy for this horse to beat this field off of that last speed fig. Not likely to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's Equibase class figure, so put him on the questionable contenders list. CAN'T CATCH ME NOW - Just can't wager on this runner. Didn't show me anything positive in the last race or on Aug 29th. Not likely that the speed figure he garnered on Sep 23rd will be good enough in this affair.

# 5 FIFTYPLUSTIP 2/1

# 2 ONCE IS FOREVER 5/2

# 3 MADDIE'S REVENGE 6/1

My selection here is FIFTYPLUSTIP. Has run strongly when racing a dirt sprint race. Change in Lasix (on Lasix) may be the secret to a major improvement. Barrow has her trained solidly to break swiftly out of the gate. ONCE IS FOREVER - Vaunts reliable speed figures on average overall when compared with the rest of this field. Make a note that this one runs with second time Lasix today. MADDIE'S REVENGE - Should wake up with Lasix change (with second time Lasix) today. Posted a formidable speed figure in the last race. Can run another good one in this contest.

#2 GOODNIGHT MOON (ML=6/1)
#7 BERBERSLILBRIEBRIE (ML=5/1)

GOODNIGHT MOON - Sneaky speed on this one. She'll probably be stalking horses on the back side, then crush them down the stretch. Trainer, Merryman, has been deliberate with this filly off the layoff. Look for a solid effort today. Took a significant drop in class rating last time around the track at Parx Racing. Returning to a similar level right here. Should perform well in this race. BERBERSLILBRIEBRIE - Finished out of the money last out at Parx Racing, but was within five lengths of the winner. Opening at 5/1 makes me think she's got a chance. This is this filly's first try on the turf. Ran well finishing second on March 30th. The track was slow that day, so I think this animal will take to the turf. Ran a lackluster race at Parx Racing last out. Racing on a fast track puts this filly at the top of my list of contenders.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 BEACH DIVA (ML=2/1), #8 MUTABAAHYIA (ML=7/2),

BEACH DIVA - Trying to beat this entrant this time at the value of 2/1. MUTABAAHYIA - Just don't think she is worth it at the likely odds.

Free Pick on Cleveland Indians -
I got no problem playing Cleveland as a a massive home favorite against the White Sox. The Indians are going to be extremely motivated in the series opener against Chicago after losing 2 of 3 to the Twins at home over the weekend. Cleveland did manage to win the finale over Minnesota on Sunday, so they got some momentum and will be facing a White Sox team that has lost 4 straight.
Even after losing 2 of 3 to the Twins, the Indians are still 21-13 at home, where they are averaging 5.6 runs/game. With Trevor Bauer on the mound, I'm confident Cleveland can outscore Chicago. Bauer has a 2.69 ERA and 1.121 WHIP in 14 starts. He comes in having struck out 10+ batters in each of his last 4 starts. In his last 3 starts against the White Sox, he's struck out 28 hitters in 20 innings of work. He also gave up 4 or fewer hits in each start. Take Cleveland!

Jack’s Free Pick Monday: Kansas City Royals +105
It’s not often I’m looking to back the Kansas City Royals. But they’re up against another last-place team in the Texas Rangers tonight and I like the value we are getting with them as home underdogs in Game 1 of this series.
Ian Kennedy has posted a respectable 4.40 ERA in eight home starts this season. Kennedy has posted a 3.59 ERA and 1.219 WHIP in seven career starts against the Rangers as well.
Bartolo Colon has come back down to reality of late. He is 1-3 with a 9.51 ERA in his last five starts, giving up 25 earned runs in 23 2/3 innings. Colon is also 0-1 with a 9.34 ERA in his last two starts against the Royals, allowing 9 earned runs in 8 2/3 innings.
Texas is 8-25 in road games vs. AL teams who score 3.9 or fewer runs per game over the last three seasons. The Rangers are 5-21 in their last 26 during Game 1 of a series. Texas is 10-25 in its last 35 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of less than .400. Bet the Royals Monday.

MLB | Rangers vs Royals
Play on: Royals -108 at 5Dimes

My free play is on the KC Royals at 8:15 ET. The Kansas City Royals had the bad luck to run into the defending champion Houston Astros over the weekend and were outscored 24-9 in getting swept in a three-game series. The 22-49 Royals sit in last place in the AL Central, as they get set to host the Texas Rangers on Monday in the opener of a three-game series. KC will be looking to snap a six-game slide and enter this contest a woeful 2-13 in June. The Royals' pitching staff has given up at least seven runs in each of the last four games and leads the majors in runs allowed (398) while owning the worst team ERA (5.37). The 29-44 Rangers are only slightly better than the Royals (Texas is also a last place team in the AL West) and enter with losses in seven of their last nine games (did win Sat & Sun against Colorado, ending a seven-game slide!). The Texas pitching staff owns a 4.92 ERA, which ranks 28th of 30 teams.
Bartolo Colon (3-4, 4.94 ERA) will take the mound for Texas and Ian Kennedy (1-6, 5.13 ERA) will get the nod for Kansas City. The ageless veteran Colon was hammered last time out in LA by the Dodgers, allowing eight runs on nine hits and a walk over 3 1/3 innings to suffer a 12-5 loss. The 45-year-old has been reached for at least six ERs in three of his last five outings and has served up 19 HRs in 74 2/3 innings in 2018. Colon posted a quality start against the Royals on May 26, yielding three runs on five hits and a pair of walks across seven innings without factoring in the decision (Texas won 4-3). He is 15-11 with a 5.00 ERA in 32 career games (31 starts) against the Royals.
Ian Kennedy is off his best start of the season this past Tuesday against Cincinnati, pitching eight scoreless innings. However, he could not get enough run support to earn the win, as KC lost 5-1 in 10 innings. Kennedy comes into this contest winless over his last 12 starts (KC is 2-10). Kennedy went up against Colon on May 26 and was also left out of the decision while allowing two runs on five hits and three walks over five innings in that 4-3 loss. Kennedy is 0-3 with a 4.40 ERA in seven career starts against Texas.
Pick your poison in this one. Colon owns a 9.51 ERA in his past five starts with opponents hitting .336 against him with a .710 slugging percentage. His season ERA has ballooned from 2.82 to 4.94 during that span while the season opponent's batting average climbed from .212 to .258 in that stretch. Then there is Kennedy, who is winless in his last 12 starts, going 0-6 with a 5.98 ERA since his last win on April 7 (Royals are 2-10). Yes, the Royals are are 10-26 at Kauffman Stadium, the worst home record in the majors. However, Texas is no better than a struggling last-place team (already 19 games out in the AL West), which over-performed yesterday in a 13-12 win over Colorado (the Rangers scored four runs in the ninth to steal the win!). Back to reality here and note that Kennedy comes in having allowed just one run over his last two starts (13 innings / 0.69 ERA). Take KC.

10* FREE MLB PICK (Mets -117)
I'll take my chances here with the Mets going into Colorado and taking the series opener behind ace Jacob deGrom. New York finally has some positive vibes after taking the final two games at Arizona, including a 4-run rally in the 9th to take the finale 5-3. The Mets have scored as many runs in their last 2 games as they had in their previous 5 games. I think there's a good chance the offense carries over that momentum to hitter-friendly Coors Field. Colorado will send out Tyler Anderson, who has a 5.14 ERA and 1.536 WHIP over 5 home starts. As for deGrom, the guys been one of the best pitchers in the game to start 2018. He's got a 1.55 ERA and 1.008 WHIP in 14 starts. He's allowed a whopping 15 earned runs in 87 1/3 innings of work. It's also worth noting that while New York is riding a high after their comeback win, Colorado is riding a low after they gave up 4 runs in the bottom of the 9th to lose 13-12 at Texas on Sunday. Give me the Mets -117!

My money is on Washington to defeat the Yankees Monday night regardless of what happens in the conclusion of the suspended game that will be played before this one. This is simply too good a price to pass up on Washington at home. Yankees are sending out Sonny Gray for the start in this one and while's been better of late, he's still got a 4.98 ERA and 1.485 WHIP in 13 starts. His most recent start came at home against these Nationals on 6/13 and he lasted just 5 innings after allowing 4 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks. Washington has scored 5+ runs in 3 of their last 4 and it's only a matter of time before Harper goes off. Bet the Nationals +114!

#MLB FREE PICK FROM MIKE LUNDIN
The Cleveland Indians host the Chicago White Sox for the opener of a three-game series Monday night, and I would be shocked if we'll see anything but a two-run+ win for the home team here.
Dylan Covey (3-1, 2.29 ERA) will take the ball for the visitors. The right-hander is 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA through three starts on the month and gave up just two runs through seven innings of a 3-2 win over Cleveland his last time out. It could however been way worse as he gave up 10 hits, and I expect the Tribe to more effective this time around.
Cleveland righty Trevor Bauer (5-5, 2.69 ERA) pitched 7 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on four hits with 12 strikeouts when pitching opposite Covey last week. He has struck out 10 or more batters in four consecutive starts.
The Indians will welcome first baseman Yonder Alonso back into the lineup as he will be activated off the family medical emergency list. In seven games against the White Sox this year, Alonso is hitting .400 (10-for-25) and he is 2-for-4 with a double and a walk off Covey.
Free pick on Cleveland Indians -1.5.

Streaky Teams (entering Monday)

Wins and Losses Streak Over/Under Streak

Baltimore 1-9 past 10 games overall Chicago Cubs Under 9-4 past 13 games
Colorado 4-12 past 16 games overall Chicago White Sox Under 14-1-1 past 16 games
Detroit 5-0 past five games overall Cincinnati Under 5-1 past six games
Houston 11-0 past 11 games overall Colorado Over 14-2-1 past 17 games
Kansas City 1-12 past 13 games overall Philadelphia Over 7-2 past nine games

South Side of the Total
The Chicago White Sox are on quite the 'under' streak lately, going 14-1-1 in the past 16 games against the total. They suffered a 3-1 loss against the Tigers on Sunday, and they have averaged just 2.7 runs per game across the past 10 outings. Chicago's pitching has stepped up lately, as they have yielded just 3.2 runs per outing. That's going to help the 'under' come in quite frequently. Their Windy City brethren, the Cubs, have also had the 'under' hit quite frequently lately. Outside of a 13-run explosion in the series-opening win on Friday, the under is 7-3 across the past 10 outings. The Cubs have been shut out three times in the past five outings, and they have scored three or fewer goals in five of their past 13 outings.

Chat Room
The Chicago Cubs will roll out RHP Tyler Chatwood against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night. He hasn't faced L.A. this season, but he is very familiar with the Dodgers from his time with the Colorado Rockies. Chatwood is 2-5 with a 4.82 ERA over seven starts and one relief appearances against Los Angeles since the start of the 2015 season with 34 strikeouts and 27 walks over 37 1/3 innings while the Dodgers are hitting .250 against him during the span. It won't be easy for Chatwood to turn things around against L.A., as RHP Kenta Maeda is 2-1 with a 3.86 ERA in four starts and a relief appearance on the road this season.

Looking Ahead

Monday, June 18
As mentioned above, the Dodgers and Cubs will battle on Monday night at Wrigley Field. The Dodgers roll into the game with a 10-1 record over their past 11 road games against a team with a winning record while going 9-1 in their past 10 road games overall. They have also been starting series very hot lately, going 7-0 in their past seven series openers. L.A. is also an impressive 17-5 in the past 22 against teams with a winning overall mark, as they look to turn things around after a slow start to the season. The Dodgers are also Maeda's past seven against NL Central foes. The Cubs are looking for revenge against the Dodgers for a loss in the National League Championship Series last season. While Chatwood has struggled against the Dodgers in recent seasons, the Cubs are 4-1 in his past five home outings while goling 14-6 in their past 20 games overall. The Dodgers have dominated, going 7-1 in the past eight meetings between these sides, while the 'under' is 14-3 in the past 17 meetings at Wrigley Field.

The Pirates and Brewers renew their National League Central rivalry on Monday night at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. The Brewers have been getting very good results from veteran Jhoulys Chacin lately, going 10-1 over his past 11 starts, including 5-1 over his past six road contests. They're also an impressive 4-0 in his past four against divisional foes, while going 5-0 in the past five road outings against teams with a losing record. The Bucs have struggled, going 9-19 over his past 28 voerall while posting a 2-6 record in the past eight against teams with a winning record. The Pirates counter with Trevor Williams, and the Bucs are just 1-4 in his past five outings, 2-5 in his past seven at home against teams with a winning mark and 1-5 in his past six against winning teams overall.

Weather Report
The weather is expected to hold off in the Steel City for the series opener between the Brewers and Pirates, but thw winds will be kicking up 10-13 mph blowing out from home plate to left field. Across the Keystone State in Philadelphia the Cardinals and Phillies will be locking horns. The precipitation will also be nil, but winds will be blowing out from 10-13 mph from home plate to straightaway center field at Citizens Bank Park.

In Cleveland, the tarpaulin is likely to come out at Progressive Field, as there is a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms at first pitch, increasing to 70 percent by 9pm through midnight. If they are able to squeeze the game in, the winds will be howling from 10-13 mph from home plate to right field.

In Chicago there is a 50 percent chance of thunderstorms, dying down to 30 percent or less by 9pm CDT. The winds will be blowing in from left field to first base, knocking down any fly balls.

In Kansas City, it will be a hot wind from 11-14 mph blowing balls out of Kauffman Stadium from home plate to left field. It will be much cooler at Coors Field for the Mets-Rockies battle, with thunderstorm chances of 40 percent from 8pm MDT through the wee hours.

Lastly, but certainly not least, the Marlins and Giants will be dealing with winds from home plate to the left-center field power alleys from 13-16 mph. The 'over' is 5-1 in the past six meetings between Miami and San Francisco, and 7-2 in the past nine battles altogether. It will be a battle of lefties, and the over is 6-2 in Miami's past eight on the road vs. LHP, while the over is 5-2 in San Francisco's past seven at home vs. LHP.

Tuesday, June 19
The Orioles and Nationals will renew acquaintances in their interleague rivalry on Tuesday night. Baltimore has struggled all across the board, but they're particularly poor lately in interleague games. They're 0-9 in their past nine interleague games against teams with a winning record, 0-5 in their past five interleague road outings against a team with a winning mark and 2-7 in their past nine interleague road assignments overall. Washington hasn't fared well in interleague games lately, either, going 1-4 in their past five heading into Monday's continuation of a game against the Nationals. However, Washington has taken advantage when playing the dregs of the league, going 48-23 in the past 71 games against teams with a winning percentage under .400. Washington has won five straight meetings against Baltimore, while going 'under' has hit in four in a row.

The Athletics and Padres will do battle in interleague play, as the A's look to hang around in the playoff chase. They enter the new week at 36-36, while the Padres are six games under .500 at 34-40. Oakland has stumbled in series openers, going 2-6 in their past eight Game 1s of a new series. They're also just 7-16 in their past 23 interleague games against a team with a losing record. San Diego has won four of their past five at home, but they're just 1-5 in their past six against the American League west, while winning just once in the past six interleague battles. Oakland has rattled off five wins in the past six trips to Petco Park, while going 8-3 in the past 11 meetings overall. Total bettors will like the fact the 'over' is 6-1 in the past seven at Petco, and 9-3 in the past 12 meetings overall.

Weather Report
The weather looks pretty good for most of the country outside of the Midwest. In Cincinnati, the Tigers and Reds will be looking at 40 percent chances of thunderstorms from 8-10pm ET. The same holds true for the Dodgers and Cubs at Wrigley Field, with 50 percent chances of storms dying down to 40 percent by 9pm CDT. If and when they do start, those west-southwest winds will be blowing in from left field to home plate again from 9-12 mph.

The winds will be gusting again in Kansas City, blowing 12-15 mph with temperatures flirting with the 100-degree mark. No precip in San Francisco, either, but the Marlins-Giants will again experience gusts from 14-17 mph to the left-center field power alleys.

Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

Streaking: Dylan Covey, Chicago White Sox (3-1, 2.29 ERA, $522)

The continual rebuild for the White Sox has been filled with disappointments, but Dylan Covey has blossomed from a has been prospect to a productive major league pitcher. In his last three outings, Covey is 2-0 (3-0 team win-loss) with an ERA of 1.00. Included in that stretch is six innings of shutout ball at Fenway - an impressive feat in 2018.

Covey takes to the hill as the White Sox take on The Indians at Progressive Field. The White Sox are currently huge +248 underdogs.

Slumping: Bartolo Colon, Texas Rangers (3-4, 3.90 ERA, $251)

Everyone's favourite PED user is slowly walking to the mound at Kauffman Stadium tonight for the Texas Rangers. 'Big Sexy' Bartolo Colon is still getting paid to be a starting pitcher in the majors and wow is he stealing money.

In June, Colon is sporting a 12.71 ERA in three starts and only thrown 11.1 innings. The scary stat is he's only struck out eight batters and allowed 6 home runs during this stretch.

Colon will look to use a time machine as he and the Rangers visit the Royals tonight. The Rangers can be found as -106 road chalk.
