Louisiana Downs - Race #7 - Post: 6:07pm - Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $11,500 Class Rating: 77

Rating: Golden DollarGolden DollarGolden DollarGolden Dollar

#7 HOODUE (ML=6/1)
#2 COMBAT COMMAND (ML=6/1)
#4 GET IT TO GEAUX (ML=5/1)

HOODUE - I undeniably see positive things for this thoroughbred right here. COMBAT COMMAND - Gelding's last race was against tougher open company. He's in with easier 'state breds' today. This is a classic 'Lone Front-runner' scenario. If Delcid gets him out of the gate cleanly it'll likely be smooth sailing. Delcid and Hall partnered with one another are a punter's friend. GET IT TO GEAUX - I like that last race on Jun 6th at Louisiana Downs where he finished third.

Vulnerable Contenders: #9 GUITAR KING (ML=7/2), #5 JALEN HURTS (ML=4/1), #1 MIDDLE OF FOREVER (ML=9/2),

GUITAR KING - In the last affair this steed finished fourth. Doesn't bode well for his chances this time around. JALEN HURTS - Tough to play any horse to turn things around if there is no large gain to taking the shot. Mediocre fig last out at Louisiana Downs at 1 mile. Don't think this mount will improve too much in today's race. MIDDLE OF FOREVER - Pace makes the race and the shortage of pace means this come from behinder will have to rally without any help. This gelding just doesn't seem to like the one hole. His running lines show that he doesn't fare well from there.

# 5 GO HIPPO GO 6/1

# 4 ROCHESTER 3/1

# 3 OUT AT EIGHT 5/2

GO HIPPO GO looks quite good to best this field. Has run solidly when racing a dirt route race. ROCHESTER - With a solid 76 average Equibase Speed Fig at the distance, seems well suited for today's race. Looks to have a solid class edge based on the most recent company kept. OUT AT EIGHT - Will probably compete quite well in the early speed battle which bodes well with this field. Earned a decent speed figure last time out.

The Walker Group Picks

# 11 IT'S GOOD TO BE US 10/1

# 8 FROGMAN MEL 6/1

# 10 LITTLE SIETE 4/1

I like IT'S GOOD TO BE US for this race and is a competitive value bet given the line at 10/1. Has to be given consideration for this event if only for the quite good speed rating put up in the last outing. Can't overlook the connections here, a 25 winning percentage, one of the best at getting into the winner's circle. FROGMAN MEL - This gelding should be carefully examined just off the earnings per start in turf route events alone. Has competitive Equibase speed figs and has to be considered for a bet in this contest. LITTLE SIETE - Put up a very good speed figure last time out. Zulueta and Pennington have a strong win percentage together.

Rating: Golden DollarGolden DollarGolden DollarGolden Dollar

#1 TRUMP THAT (ML=6/1)

TRUMP THAT - The rest of the group may trail this thoroughbred all the way around the track. Based on this filly's recent efforts, she should be aided by this shorter trip. Ran a less than stellar race at Thistledown last time out. Racing on a fast track puts this filly at the top of my contenders roll call.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 LITTLE TITA (ML=5/2), #3 OK KID (ML=3/1), #5 CONGREELY (ML=7/2),

LITTLE TITA - This sustainer looks to have little chance without a ding-dong battle up front. Today's race is 6 furlongs. Hasn't hit the board in a sprint event in the last couple months. Not the greatest of signs. OK KID - Hard to keep chasing this kind of 'bridesmaid' horse. Showed indications of physical problems in the contest on Jun 11th at Thistledown. CONGREELY - This filly probably needs a better pace situation to make her late rush.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - TRUMP THAT - Equibase class rating today of 46. Taking a big drop in the level of competition and should respond to an easier level of competition. Worth a bet.

Oakland Athletics vs. Detroit Tigers Preview and Predictions 06-25-2018

MLB Previews 24th June 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 06/24/2018

edwin jackson will match a major-league record on monday afternoon when the veteran right-hander suits up for his 13th team as the oakland athletics open a four-game series against the detroit tigers at comerica park. jackson, who will join former reliever octavio dotel for the honor, opted out of his contract with washington before signing a minor-league deal with the athletics on june 6.

jackson could receive a jolt from an oakland offense that has made itself at home in opposing ballparks, with mark canha's lead-off blast in the fifth inning in sunday's 10-3 setback to the chicago white sox, helping the athletics set a major-league record with 25 straight road games with a homer. the 29-year-old's drive pushed his hitting streak to six games, during which he has three homers, six rbis and five runs scored. like oakland (40-38), detroit (36-42) was on the business end of a blowout on sunday to see its skid reach five straight games - tying a season high. nicholas castellanos answered a 1-for-13 slump by going 2-for-4 with a run scored in sunday's 12-2 setback.
tv: 3:10 p.m. et, mlb network, fs detroit
pitching matchup: athletics rh edwin jackson (2017: 5-6, 5.21 era) vs. tigers rh jordan zimmermann (2-0, 4.95)

jackson, who has pitched for the tigers among a host of other teams, posted a 0-1 mark with a 4.02 era and eight walks in 15 2/3 innings over three starts with triple-a nashville. the 34-year-old is lending a hand to an injury-ravaged rotation in oakland that is without trevor cahill (achilles'), daniel gossett (elbow), brett anderson (shoulder), andrew triggs (arm) and jharel cotton (elbow). victor martinez is 5-for-25 in his career versus jackson, while castellanos (0-for-3, two strikeouts), jose iglesias (0-for-3) and james mccann (0-for-2) are hitless against the hurler.
zimmermann retired the first 12 batters he faced before running into trouble in the fifth inning on june 16, eventually yielding four runs on as many hits in a no-decision against the chicago white sox. the start was the 32-year-old's first after missing six weeks with a right shoulder impingement. khris davis is 1-for-12 with four strikeouts versus zimmermann, who sports a 1-0 mark with a 1.14 whip in two career starts against oakland.
walk-offs

1. iglesias had nine hits in his previous six games before going 0-for-3 on sunday.

2. oakland has launched 68 homers in 38 road games this season, as opposed to just 36 in 40 home tilts.

3. the athletics own a 10-4 record against american league central representatives.

prediction: tigers 5, athletics 4

MLB Previews 24th June 2018 by Gracenote
Angels vs. Royals Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 06/24/2018

the kansas city royals own the worst record in the american league and are losers of 11 of their last 12 games after falling 11-3 to the houston astros on sunday. the royals will try to turn things around at home when they host mike trout and the los angeles angels on monday in the makeup of a rainout from april 15.

the royals scored three or fewer runs in each of their last six games and are last in the al in runs scored at 275 while owning a run differential of minus-151. kansas city had a chance to take the series from the defending-champion astros after earning a 1-0 win in the opener on friday but dropped a 4-3 decision in 12 innings on saturday before getting crushed on sunday. trout is still tied for the major league lead with 23 home runs but could not get the angels a series win against toronto, going a combined 2-for-9 with four strikeouts on saturday and sunday as los angeles dropped the final two of a four-game set to settle for a split. trout will try to find the power stroke again on monday against royals right-hander brad keller, who opposes lefty tyler skaggs.

tv: 4:15 p.m. et, mlb network, fs west (los angeles), fs kansas city
pitching matchup: angels lh tyler skaggs (6-4, 2.81 era) vs. royals rh brad keller (1-2, 2.63)
skaggs had his start pushed back due to a hamstring injury but came through a bullpen session with no trouble on saturday and is expected to rejoin the rotation monday. the 26-year-old allowed a total of one earned run over 20 innings while earning the win in each of his last three starts and struck out 22 in that span. skaggs is seeing kansas city for the first time this season and is 1-0 without a run allowed in 14 career innings against the royals.

keller is making a smooth transition from the bullpen to the rotation but is still looking for his first win as a starter. the 22-year-old allowed three runs and nine hits over six innings against houston in his last outing on june 17 but did not factor in the decision. keller started at the angels on june 5 and absorbed the loss while surrendering one run and five hits in 4 1/3 innings.
walk-offs

1. royals 1b lucas duda (foot) homered on sunday and is 2-for-7 in two games since coming off the disabled list.
2. los angeles rhp hansel robles, who was claimed off waivers from the new york mets on saturday, made his team debut sunday and absorbed the loss.

3. kansas city ss alcides escobar is 5-for-59 over his last 17 games.

prediction: angels 5, royals 2

New York Yankees vs. Philadelphia Phillies Preview and Predictions 06-25-2018

MLB Previews 25th June 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 06/25/2018

the new york yankees will be without one of their top sluggers as they attempt to halt a three-game slide when they visit the philadelphia phillies on monday for the opener of their three-game interleague series. gary sanchez, who is tied for third on the club with 14 homers, exited sunday's 12-inning setback at tampa bay with a right hip/groin injury and likely is headed to the disabled list.

in addition to sanchez, new york lost its season-high third straight contest sunday, dropping a 7-6 decision despite a 5-for-5 performance from giancarlo stanton. the 28-year-old homered to tie aaron judge for the team lead and pull within one blast of reaching the 20-homer plateau in each of his nine major-league campaigns. philadelphia returns home for a nine-game stretch after failing to complete a three-game sweep in washington on sunday. the phillies wasted two- and four-run leads in the 8-6 setback but went deep twice to give them six homers in the series while odubel herrera registered his seventh multi-hit performance in 10 contests.
tv: 7:05 p.m. et, mlb network, yes (new york), nbcs philadelphia plus
pitching matchup: yankees rh jonathan loaisiga (1-0, 3.12 era) vs. phillies rh vince velasquez (5-7, 4.82)

loaisiga will be making his third career start after a short outing against seattle on wednesday. the 23-year-old nicaraguan lasted only 3 2/3 innings versus the mariners but avoided a loss after yielding three runs on six hits and two walks. loaisiga, who went 3-1 with a 4.32 era in six turns with double-a trenton before joining the yankees, has yet to serve up a home run over 8 2/3 frames in his two major-league starts.
velasquez escaped with a no-decision against st. louis on tuesday after giving up four runs on four hits and three walks across 6 1/3 innings. the 26-year-old californian has won only one of his last six starts despite allowing fewer than three runs in four of the outings. velasquez made one start and one relief appearance against the yankees while with houston in 2015, yielding three runs and six hits over 8 1/3 frames without recording a decision.
walk-offs

1. stanton has gone 10-for-17 over his last four road games.

2. philadelphia placed 2b jesmuel valentin on the paternity list sunday and activated of dylan cozens (quadriceps) from the 10-day disabled list.

3. new york rookie 3b miguel andujar has hit safely in five of his last six games, recording three homers and seven rbis in that span.

Seattle Mariners vs. Baltimore Orioles Preview and Predictions 06-25-2018

MLB Previews 24th June 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 06/24/2018

the seattle mariners were cruising along and battling the houston astros for first place in the american league west before heading east for a 10-game road trip. the mariners did not have much luck against boston and new york but will try to bounce back when they visit the baltimore orioles for the opener of a four-game series on monday.

seattle was swept in three games by the yankees and dropped two of three at boston, including a 5-0 setback in the rubber match on sunday. the mariners were 21 games over .500 after a home win over boston on june 16 but since dropped six of seven to fall 4 1/2 games behind the surging astros in the al west. the orioles should pose less of a challenge as the last-place team in the al east but just got done taking two of three at the atlanta braves and broke out of a team-wide offensive funk by totaling 20 runs in the three-game set. seattle will try to keep baltimore in check with staff ace felix hernandez while the orioles counter with righty andrew cashner on monday.
tv: 7:05 p.m. et, root northwest (seattle), masn (baltimore)
pitching matchup: mariners rh felix hernandez (6-6, 5.14 era) vs. orioles rh andrew cashner (2-8, 4.72)

hernandez is trying to rediscover his all-star form and allowed one earned run in each of his last two outings while striking out 12 in as many innings against powerhouses boston and new york. the former cy young award winner surrendered just two home runs in his last seven starts after yielding 10 in his first nine turns. hernandez is seeing baltimore for the first time since july 25, 2014, when he struck out 10 in seven strong innings.
cashner scattered three hits over four scoreless innings at washington on wednesday but did not go back to the mound after a lengthy rain delay and was held out of the decision. the tcu product was making his first start since june 8 after dealing with a back injury. cashner made five starts against seattle as a member of the texas rangers last season and went 2-2 with a 4.23 era.
walk-offs

1. mariners ss jean segura (forearm infection) sat out the last four games and is day-to-day.

2. orioles of mark trumbo hit safely in each of his last eight games and homered five times in that span.

3. seattle dh nelson cruz is 10-for-16 with two homers, seven rbis and six runs scored in the last four games.

Nationals vs. Rays Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 06/25/2018

the tampa bay rays look to ride the momentum after sweeping the team with the best record in the majors when they host the washington nationals on monday for the opener of their two-game interleague series. rookie jake bauers' walk-off homer in the 12th inning on sunday gave the rays a 7-6 triumph over the visiting new york yankees - their sixth straight victory at tropicana field and fifth in seven games overall.

tampa bay, which was outscored 15-4 in two losses at washington earlier this month and is 0-7 in interleague play, registered nine of its 10 hits on sunday in the first three innings while scoring more than four runs for the first time in 12 games. all-star game candidate blake snell looks to reach 10 wins for the first time in his career and continue his strong pitching at home when he takes the mound monday against gio gonzalez. the nationals also look to build off a thrilling victory after rallying from four runs down to top philadelphia 8-6 on sunday and avoid a three-game sweep at the hands of their national league east rival. anthony rendon (14-for-32) and rookie juan soto (9-for-28) both bring eight-game hitting streaks into the series for washington while daniel murphy went 5-for-12 against the phillies over the weekend.
tv: 7:10 p.m. et, masn2 (washington), fs sun (tampa bay)
pitching matchup: nationals lh gio gonzalez (6-4, 3.08 era) vs. rays lh blake snell (9-4, 2.48)

gonzalez, who is winless in his last four starts, allowed two runs and five hits over four innings in a rain-shortened appearance against baltimore last time out. the 32-year-old floridian owns a 6.20 era in four turns this month after posting a 3-0 record and 1.47 era in may, including two scoreless outings. c.j. cron is 2-for-3 with a homer versus gonzalez, who is 2-2 with a 5.54 era in six career appearances (four starts) against tampa bay.
snell has gone 5-1 in his last seven starts after holding houston to one run on three hits and seven walks over seven innings - his longest outing since april - in his last turn. the 25-year-old native of seattle has recorded 11 quality starts in his last 14 trips to the mound and has been dominant at home, going 4-1 with a 0.96 era in six outings. snell will be facing washington for the first time in his career but is 3-2 with a 2.33 era in eight career interleague starts.
walk-offs

1. washington rf bryce harper went 3-for-5 with two runs and an rbi on sunday after going just 3-for-28 in his previous eight contests.

2. tampa bay ss adeiny hechavarria belted a solo homer on sunday and is 12-for-34 during his nine-game hitting streak.
3. the rays, who are 13-14 all-time against the washington franchise, will match its worst interleague start (0-8) in 2005 with a loss.

the new york mets get plenty of headlines for their struggles at the plate, but the pittsburgh pirates are hurting just as much with the bats. both teams will try to scratch out a few runs when the mets host the pirates on monday night in the opener of a three-game series.

the pirates are hitting the road for a nine-game trip through new york, san diego and los angeles on the heels of a five-game losing streak that saw them total eight runs. pittsburgh managed five hits while getting blanked 3-0 by the arizona diamondbacks on sunday and watched the nos. 4, 5 and 6 hitters in the lineup combine to go 0-for-9 with three strikeouts. the mets are actually hitting better of late but struggled on the mound while dropping six in a row - allowing an average of 7.8 runs in that span. new york will try to stop the bleeding with righty seth lugo on monday while the pirates send right-hander jameson taillon to the mound.
tv: 7:10 p.m. et, at&t sportsnet pittsburgh, sny (new york)

pitching matchup: pirates rh jameson taillon (4-6, 4.03 era) vs. mets rh seth lugo (2-2, 2.85)
taillon allowed three or fewer earned runs in nine of his last 10 starts but suffered a loss to milwaukee on tuesday, when he was reached for three runs on seven hits and a walk across five innings. the florida native struck out seven last time out and is allowing opponents a .247 batting average. taillon has not faced new york since making his first two major-league starts against the mets in 2016, when he allowed a total of three runs in 14 innings.
lugo struggled in his last two starts, allowing a total of 11 runs - eight earned - and 14 hits over eight innings at arizona and colorado. the 28-year-old is holding down a rotation spot while noah syndergaard (finger) is on the disabled list and yielded a total of three homers in his last two outings. lugo is seeing pittsburgh for the first time in his career and is 1-0 with a 0.90 era in 13 games - two starts - at home this season.

walk-offs

1. the pirates placed rhp michael feliz (shoulder) on the 10-day disabled list sunday.
2. new york of brandon nimmo (finger) left sunday's game after being hit by a pitch and is day-to-day.

3. pittsburgh of gregory polanco is batting .214 and was held out of the starting lineup in each of the last three games.

prediction: pirates 4, mets 1

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Miami Marlins Preview and Predictions 06-25-2018

MLB Previews 24th June 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 06/24/2018

shelby miller makes his first trip to a major-league mound in more than 14 months when the arizona diamondbacks look to continue their hot streak monday night in the first of four games against the host miami marlins. miller underwent tommy john surgery after making just four starts last season and hopes to help the diamondbacks win for the ninth time in 10 road games.

five-time all-star paul goldschmidt, who has hit safely in 17 of his last 18 contests, should be back in the lineup after resting in sunday's 3-0 victory as arizona completed a four-game sweep at pittsburgh and won for the 12th time in 16 outings overall. the national league west leaders, who gave up just six runs against the pirates, will face miami right-hander dan straily in the series opener monday. the marlins enter this series fresh off their first winning road trip of the season (5-4) after outlasting colorado 8-5 on sunday as derek dietrich homered among four hits to improve his batting average to .410 since may 31. miami was outscored 21-4 while getting swept in three games at arizona to start june but opens a 10-game homestand and has won three of its last four contests at marlins park.
tv: 7:10 p.m. et, fs arizona, fs florida (miami)
pitching matchup: diamondbacks rh shelby miller (2017: 2-2, 4.09 era) vs. marlins rh dan straily (2-3, 4.89)

miller, who won a career-high 15 games in 2013 with st. louis, makes his first appearance in the majors since april 23, 2017, and owns a 3.67 era in his career despite a 37-49 record. the 27-year-old texan made four rehab appearances at class-a visalia and double-a jackson while going 1-0 with a 4.66 era and 28 strikeouts over 19 1/3 innings. justin bour is 4-for-8 with a homer against miller, who is 2-4 with a 3.28 era in eight career starts versus miami.
straily is appealing a five-game suspension for hitting buster posey in tuesday's start at san francisco when he lasted only 1 1/3 innings and gave up four runs. the 29-year-old marshall product limited opponents to three runs or fewer in six of his previous eight turns before the loss against the giants last time out. daniel descalso is 2-for-7 with a double and four rbis versus straily, who gave up one run over 4 1/3 innings in a loss at arizona on june 3.
walk-offs

1. miami rookie rf/3b brian anderson was 1-for-5 on sunday to extend his on-base streak to a season-high 21 games - the best such run from a marlin in 2018.

2. arizona rookie rhp yoshihisa hirano has not allowed a run in his last 22 appearances - the third-longest such streak in franchise history.
3. diamondbacks lf david peralta has hit safely in seven straight games and was 5-for-11 with three homers in the previous series versus the marlins.

prediction: marlins 5, diamondbacks 3

Reds vs. Braves Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 06/24/2018

the cincinnati reds are soaring as they arrive in atlanta to open a three-game series monday with the braves, riding a seven-game winning streak during which they are smashing homers and scoring runs at an impressive clip. pitcher michael lorenzen and outfielder jesse winkler provided pinch-hit homers in sunday's 8-6 comeback victory over the cubs, and the reds begin the week hitting .322 as a team during the streak while averaging 7.6 runs and 11 hits per contest.

joey votto tallied three hits sunday and has drawn at least one walk in 14 of his past 15 games for the reds, while cincinnati's pitching staff has posted a 3.55 era while winning 10 of its past 12 contests. the braves shook off a three-game losing streak sunday, beating baltimore 7-3 as ozzie albies collected three hits one day after finishing with four. albies brings a six-game hitting streak into the contest (hitting .481 in that span), while right fielder nick markakis added two doubles and begins the week with a national-league best 99 hits on the season - three ahead of teammate freddie freeman. the national league east leaders left 25 runners on base in losing the first two games to the oriole but enter the series batting .287 with runners in scoring position this season.
tv: 7:35 p.m. et, fs ohio (cincinnati), fs southeast (atlanta)
pitching matchup: reds rh tyler mahle (6-6, 3.89 era) vs. braves rh mike foltynewicz (5-4, 2.16)

mahle has been fantastic so far in june, going 3-0 with a 1.62 era in four outings - two in which he did not allow a run. the 23-year-old rookie earned a no-decision against detroit on wednesday, striking out eight in six frames while giving up two runs - the ninth time in his past 12 starts mahle has not surrendered more than three runs. he held the braves to three runs on three hits with a career-high 11 strikeouts in a no-decision april 24.
foltynewicz returns from the disabled list after experiencing right triceps tightness in a june 12 start against the new york mets, in which he gave up two hits with six strikeouts in five scoreless innings. the 26-year-old has established himself as a potential all-star, holding opponents to a .199 batting average while entering sunday fourth in the nl in era, ninth in strikeouts (94) and ninth in whip (1.14). he faced cincinnati on april 23, giving up two runs with four walks across 4 2/3 innings in a no-decision.
walk-offs

1. atlanta rhp arodys vizcaino, who has 15 saves but has not pitched since june 17, was placed on the disabled list sunday (retroactive to june 21) with right shoulder inflammation.
2. the reds and braves split a four-game series in cincinnati in late april, as the reds scored 19 runs in winning the first two games before atlanta rallied to capture the final two contests.

3. cincinnati began sunday leading the majors with seven grand slams and has hit four in its past 11 games.

San Diego Padres vs. Texas Rangers Preview and Predictions 06-25-2018

MLB Previews 24th June 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 06/24/2018

although their season-best winning streak fell by the wayside over the weekend, the texas rangers' stretch of three consecutive series victories remains intact. the rangers should feel good about their chances of making it four in a row starting monday, when they begin an eight-game homestand with the first of three interleague contests against the san diego padres.

texas struggled to get anything going sunday at minnesota after a prolonged stretch of solid run production, managing only three hits in a 2-0 defeat that kept the club from recording only the fourth undefeated road trip of at least six games in club history. the rangers averaged 6.9 runs during their surge - a span during which they sandwiched three-game series victories over colorado and minnesota around a three-game sweep of kansas city. san diego appeared to be on the verge of splitting a four-game set in san francisco on sunday as it took a one-run lead in the 11th inning, but reliable closer brad hand gave up two runs in the bottom half to send the club to its seventh loss in eight contests. the padres have been unable to put together much offense during their slump, scoring 18 runs - including only 12 in their defeats.
tv: 8:05 p.m. et, fs san diego, fs southwest (texas)
pitching matchup: padres lh joey lucchesi (3-3, 3.86 era) vs. rangers lh cole hamels (4-6, 3.41)

lucchesi struggled mightily in his return from a month-plus stint on the disabled list on wednesday, taking the loss against oakland after surrendering four runs on three hits and two walks over 1 2/3 innings. the 25-year-old appeared ready after working four no-hit frames in a rehab start for single-a lake elsinore six days earlier and posted a 3.23 era in his first nine major-league turns prior to landing on the dl. right-handed hitters have accounted for all 10 of the homers lucchesi has allowed as he faces texas for the first time.
hamels secured his first victory in nearly a month tuesday in kansas city, permitting one unearned run while striking out seven over as many innings. the four-time all-star opened the campaign 1-3 with a 4.76 era over his first five turns, but he is 3-3 with a 2.81 era and has allowed opponents to bat .206 against him in his last 10 outings. eric hosmer is hitless in 13 at-bats versus hamels, who is 9-2 with a 2.25 era in 17 career starts against san diego - the last of which came in 2015.
walk-offs

1. rangers of shin-soo choo hit a leadoff double sunday to extend his on-base streak to a career-high 37 games - three shy of the best such mark in the majors this season (odubel herrera, 40).
2. san diego has yielded five runs or fewer in each of its last 14 road contests - the longest such streak in club history.

3. texas 3b adrian beltre went 6-for-13 against minnesota and needs one rbi to break a tie with sammy sosa (1,667) for 29th place on the all-time list.

prediction: rangers 5, padres 1

Toronto Blue Jays vs. Houston Astros Preview and Predictions 06-25-2018

MLB Previews 24th June 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 06/24/2018

yuli gurriel has been swinging a hot bat in june, but he has made a habit of delivering in key situations all season long. the 34-year-old cuban looks to continue his torrid month at the plate on monday, when the houston astros begin the final leg of their nine-game homestand with the first of three contests versus the toronto blue jays.

gurriel finished 3-for-5 with two doubles and a grand slam in sunday's 11-3 rout of kansas city, lifting his batting average for the month to .358 while also increasing his average with runners in scoring position to a major league-best .464. "he just has a knack for really putting the barrel on the ball and doing incredibly positive things. ... he can hit anything anywhere, and he usually hits it hard. and that was a big knockout blow for them early in the game," astros manager a.j. hinch told reporters after the game. kendrys morales clubbed a pinch-hit homer - the last of four blasts on the day for the team - to send toronto to a 7-6 road victory over the los angeles angels on sunday and a split of the four-game series. morales has been on an extended offensive tear for the blue jays, registering multiple hits in nine of his last 15 starts and batting .352 over his last 28 games overall.
tv: 8:10 p.m. et, sportsnet, tva (toronto), at&t sportsnet-southwest (houston)
pitching matchup: blue jays lh j.a. happ (9-3, 3.56 era) vs. astros rh justin verlander (9-2, 1.60)

happ is riding a five-game winning streak and managed to get the decision wednesday versus atlanta despite giving up four runs and six hits - two homers - in 8 1/3 innings. the 35-year-old northwestern alum is one victory away from last year's total and averaging 10.1 strikeouts per nine innings, which would be his best mark for a full season. houston's jose altuve is only 2-for-14 with a homer against happ, who is 4-2 with a 3.33 era in eight career starts versus his former team.
verlander posted his third 10-strikeout effort of the season, but houston fell to 0-3 in those games with tuesday's loss to tampa bay as he settled for a no-decision despite yielding only a solo homer and striking out 10 in 6 2/3 frames. the former american league mvp has yet to give up more than three earned runs in an outing, although four of the nine homers he has surrendered have come in his last three turns. morales is 13-for-44 with two homers and 10 rbis against verlander, who is 3-5 with a 4.67 era in 12 career starts versus toronto.
walk-offs

1. astros dh evan gattis also belted a pinch-hit solo shot on sunday, lifting his totals in 21 games this month to eight home runs and a majors-best 25 rbis.
2. morales has reached base safely multiple times in five straight games as a starter, one shy of matching the longest such run of his career.

3. houston has scored a league-high 142 runs in the seventh inning or later.

prediction: astros 3, blue jays 1

Buckeye State Bonanza
The Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Indians combined to make it a perfect week for the state of Ohio. The Reds and Indians are a combined 14-0 across their past 14 games, as each club is on a seven-game winning streak. The run by the Reds is quite a bit more surprising, as they're cellar dwellers in the National League Central Division. The huge winning streak has helped them carve into what was once an ugly run differential. It's now at just minus-43. They'll hit the road for Atlanta on Monday looking to stay hot with Tyler Mahle on the mound. The Reds have won five straight with Mahle on the hill, and five of his past six outings away from home. They have also rattled off four straight wins vs. right-handed starting pitchers. The Braves will counter with Mike Foltynewicz, and they're just 6-15 across his past 21, and 0-4 in his past four against NL Central foes.

The Indians have opened up an eight-game gap in the American League Central, sweeping the Tigers out of Progressive Field. They're now 10-3 against the Tigers, and 25-13 overall in their division. The only chink in the armor for the Tribe has been on the road, where they're 16-20. That's where the Indians will be starting on Monday night in St. Louis. The Indians have rattled off 23 victories in their past 29 appearances on Monday, but they're just 17-41 in their past 58 interleague road games against a team with a winning record, 2-5 in their past seven interleague road games vs. RHP and 1-4 in Mike Clevinger's past five road assignments. They're also 0-5 in his past five against a winning team. Luckily for the Indians, the Cards are just 1-4 in their past five at home, 2-5 in their past seven interleague battles and 0-5 in John Gant's past five outings.

Looking Ahead

Monday, June 25
The Blue Jays head down to the Gulf for a battle against the Astros. The Jays have gotten a little hotter lately, going 5-1 in their past six games against a right-handed starting pitcher, although Justin Verlander of the Astros represents the biggest test in a while. Toronto has posted a solid 6-2 record in their past eight games on a Monday, but they're just 3-10 in the past 13 games on the road. They're also 3-9 in the past 12 games against American League West Division opponents. The good news for Toronto is that they'll have LHP JA Happ on the bump. They're 10-4 over his past 14 assignments, while going 12-5 in his past 17 games against AL West opponents. Toronto is also a solid 36-17 over the past 53 with Happ on the hill against a team with a winning record.

For the Astros, they have posted a 5-2 mark in their past seven tries vs. LHP. They're also 5-2 in the past seven at Minute Maid Park against teams with a losing overall mark. Houston has posted a 42-19 record in their past 61 home games, and they're 35-16 in the past 51 against teams with a losing overall mark. Verlander has been gold for the defending champs, as Houston has posted a 19-7 record across his past 26 assignments, although they are a dismal 1-4 in the past five home outings by J.V. The Jays have managed just six wins in their past 21 trips to Houston, while the 'under' has connected in six of the past eight meetings at Minute Maid Park.

The Cubs and Dodgers hook up in L.A. in the only late-night game on Monday night. These two clubs just met last week at Wrigley Field, with the Cubs posting two wins in three tries. However, Chicago limps in after a shocking four-game sweep at the hands of the cellar-dwelling Reds. The Cubs pitching staff allowed 7.8 runs per game in the four-game brooming, so they'll need better pitching against Matt Kemp and the Dodgers. They turn to Duane Underwood Jr. in his major league debut on Monday. He'll be tasked with turning around an 0-5 skid in the past five road games, while going 0-4 in their past four vs. RHP. The Dodgers counter with Kenta Maeda, and they're 6-2 in his past eight starts vs. NL Central foes. They're also 12-5 in his past 17 starts at Chavez Ravine.

Weather Report
The winds will be howling at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, gusting from 12-15 mph from home plate to the left-center field power alley. Precipitation will not be a problem in Queens for the Pirates-Mets battle, but the wind will also be gusting there, too. However, the winds will be out of the north from 9-12 mph blowing in from right-center field to home plate.

The only trouble spot as far as precipitation will be in St. Louis, where there is a 40 percent or better chance of rain from 6pm through midnight.

Tuesday, June 26
It will be a southpaw battle in Detroit between A's LHP Sean Manaea and Tigers LHP Blaine Hardy. Oakland has posted a 5-2 mark over their past seven on the road with Manaea on the hill. They're also 6-0 in Manaea's past six starts against American League Central foes, while going 36-15 in their past 51 against Central opponents overall. They're also 20-8 in the past 28 against teams with a losing overall record while going 4-1 in their past five vs. LHP. For the Tigers, they're on a five-game losing skid heading into Monday's game. They are also a dismal 11-24 in their past 35 against AL West teams, while posting a 13-27 record in the past 40 at home vs. a team with a winning record. However, they have won five of their past six tries vs. LHP, including 4-0 in their past four at home vs. southpaws.

The Twins and White Sox will battle on the south side after a scheduled day off. Minnesota has struggled with rest, going just 3-7 in their past 10 games after a day off. They're also just 4-9 in their past 13 on the road, while going 1-5 in Lance Lynn's past six starts when opening a new series. The Pale Hose counter with Reynaldo Lopez, and they're 1-5 in his past six starts while going 0-5 in his past five inside the division. Chicago has managed a poor 2-6 record in their past eight at home, while going 18-39 in their past 57 vs. RHP. Minnesota has owned this series recently, going 9-3 in the past 12 overall, while posting an 11-5 mark in their past 16 trips to Guaranteed Rate Field.

Colorado and San Francisco renew acquaintances in the Bay Area. The Rockies struggled against the Marlins over the weekend, now they try to get better on the road. They're 0-7 in Chad Bettis' past seven battles against NL West rivals, and they're 1-6 in the past seven against teams with a winning overall record. Colorado has managed a subpar 2-5 mark in the past seven on the road. San Francisco has won five of the past six overall, and they're 5-1 in the past six at home. The Giants are also 13-3 in their past 16 vs. RHP, while going 4-1 in Derek Holland's past five starts. The Giants are 7-2 in the past nine at home vs. the Rockies, although they're 0-4 the past four times seeing Bettis at AT&T Park.

Weather Report
The weather is expected to move in to the Motor City in the later innings, perhaps hindering the A's-Tigers battle at Comerica. There is a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms around 9pm, increasing to better than 50 percent through the overnight hours.

At Fenway Park, the Angels and Red Sox will be dealing with a jetstream to left-center field blowing at 11-14 mph. The same holds true for the Pirates-Mets game. There will be no precip, but winds gusting from 11-14 mph to the left-center field power alley. A hot wind will be blowing in from right field to home plate at 12-15 mph with temperatures hovering around the 100-degree mark. In San Francisco, the Rockies-Giants will also be experiencing gusty winds humming from 13-17 mph out to left-center field.

It wouldn't be summer if Atlanta wasn't on the weather worry list. The Reds and Braves have thunderstorm chances of 40 percent for most of the evening, so it will be hit or miss there. Mother Nature might be the only thing that can cool off the Reds these days.

STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTING PITCHERS

Streaking: Tyler Skaggs, Los Angeles Angels (6-4, 2.81 ERA, $83)

The overall value has been modest, but Skaggs has been one of the top pitchers in baseball this month. Skaggs has reeled off three consecutive victories, allowing just one run while racking up 22 strikeouts over 20 sensational innings in that span. And with only one of those wins coming with the Angels as a favorite of better than -111, Skaggs has turned a tidy profit in June.

Look for that success to continue Monday night, with the Angels installed at -165 on Bet365 against Brad Keller and the woeful Kansas City Royals.

Slumping: Gio Gonzalez, Washington Nationals (6-4, 3.08 ERA, $5)

It has been an up-and-down kind of year for the veteran southpaw, who earned value in seven of eight starts during a recent stretch but has dropped his last two starts – including one as a -200 favorite. Gonzalez sports a 6.20 ERA in four starts this month, and has allowed at least one home run in six of his previous seven outings.

Gonzalez and the Nationals are +100 underdogs against red-hot Blake Snell and the Tampa Bay Rays; given the difficulty of the pitching matchup, bettors shouldn't put their faith in Gonzalez to turn things around Monday.

-- The Orioles are 0-11 SU as a home dog after Chris Davis was hitless in at least three at bats. Baltimore lost all abut one of these games by multiple runs and they are 0-7 SU in this spot THIS season.

Starter-Based Trend of the Day:

-- The Mariners are 13-0 SU when Felix Hernandez starts as a favorite when they lost both his last start and his last start against the current opponent. In the two occurrences from this season, the M's won 8-3 and 9-5.

Jack’s Free Pick Monday: Los Angeles Angels -1.5 (-105)
The Los Angeles Angels should have no problem winning by two runs or more tonight against the reeling Kansas City Royals. The Royals are 2-17 in their last 19 games overall with 12 of those losses coming by two runs or more.
Tyler Skaggs has been the Angels’ best starter this season at 6-4 with a 2.81 ERA and 1.225 WHIP in 14 starts. He has been at his best on the road, going 5-1 with a 2.27 ERA and 1.112 WHIP in eight starts away from home. Skaggs is 3-0 with a 0.45 ERA in his last three starts.
Skaggs has never lost to the Royals, going 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 0.714 WHIP in two career starts against them, pitching 14 shutout innings. He’ll be opposed by Brad Keller, who is 0-1 with a 3.38 ERA and 1.661 WHIP in four starts for the Royals this season, averaging just 4.7 innings per start.
The Angels are 14-2 vs. teams who win 38% or fewer of their games this season. They are beating these teams by 3.0 runs per game on average. Los Angeles is 12-1 vs. AL teams scoring 3.9 or less runs per game, winning these contests by 3.4 runs per game. Bet the Angels on the Run Line Monday.

1 Unit FREE PLAY on Pittsburgh Pirates -107
The Pirates had climbed their way back to .500 but have lost five straight since. They should be able to get back in the win column today against a team in the Mets that is struggling more than they are. The Mets have lost six in a row coming in. Jameson Taillon is having a productive season at 4-6 with a 4.03 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in 15 starts for the Pirates. Taillon has shut down the Mets in two previous starts against them, going 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA and 0.79 WHIP. Seth Lugo is used to being a reliever and is only averaging 4.5 innings per start for the Mets this season. This New York bullpen has posted a 4.73 ERA and has been overused this season, especially of late as the Mets have allowed 6 runs or more in five of their last six games. The Pirates are 13-6 in the last 19 meetings. Give me the Pirates.

I like the value here with the Orioles as a short road dog against the Mariners on Monday. Baltimore is finally starting to play some decent baseball. They just split a 6-game road trip against the Nationals and Braves.
A big reason is they are starting to produce at the plate. The Orioles scored 20 runs in their 3 games against Atlanta over the weekend and they should be able to keep it going against Seattle's Felix Hernandez, who owns an ugly 6.97 ERA and 1.600 WHIP in 8 road starts.
The Orioles will send out the red-hot Andrew Cashner, who has posted a strong 3.37 ERA in his last 3 starts, which have come against the Yankees, Blue Jays and Nationals.
Mariners are 1-5 in Hernandez's last 6 starts and have lost 4 straight road games against a right-handed starter. Take Baltimore!

10* FREE MLB PICK (Marlines +120)
I'll take my chances here with Miami at home against Arizona. The Diamondbacks come in fresh off a 4-game sweep of the Pirates in Pittsburgh. Arizona has already secured at least a split on their current 10-game road trip with a 5-1 start to the trip. I think off that 4-game sweep we could see Arizona come out a bit flat here in Miami, where they have lost 6 of their last 7 games at Marlins Park. Miami is also playing with some confidence, as they took the final 2 games of their 3-game series at Colorado to finish up their 9-game road trip with a 5-4 record. They put up 14 runs in the final 2 games against the Rockies and I look for the offense to carry the load here against Arizona's Shelby Miller, who will be making his first start since April of last year. It's also worth noting Miami has won 5 of their last 6 series openers and are 6-2 in Dan Straily's last 8 home starts and 4-1 in his last 5 starts vs a team with a winning record. Give me the Marlins +120!

Pittsburgh/Mets to go UNDER the total of 7-1/2
Pitching Matchup:
Pittsburgh (36-41) uses RHP Jameson Taillon (4-6, 4:03), the Mets (31-44) bring RHP Seth Lugo (2-2, 2.85) to challenge in game #1 of the series.
Game Analysis:
The Pirates and Mets show on Monday each in a deficit ridden losing streak, the Bucs have lost 5 in a row at the hands of Arizona and Milwaukee. Home standing New York is on a 0-6 downer with the Dodgers and Rockies the opponents. This will be the first meeting in 2018 in this series. Since 2016, the Mets have a 6-4 edge. Scoring consistency can be an issue with each squad, the Mets averaging only 3.14 runs at home, the Pirates 4.30 runs on the road. We note, Taillon has allowed 10 home runs this year but, then again this is New York at home! Also, Pittsburgh scored just 8 runs in the aforementioned losing streak.
The Mets would be a lean SU here, however, I prefer to try the total card. The series has gone OVER 6-1-1 last eight times out but, we have conflicting data with the Pirates/Taillon going UNDER in 5 straight road outings versus

My money is on the Indians as a short road favorite against the Cardinals. Cleveland comes in having won 7 straight and it's been quite the run. The Indians have scored at least 4 runs in all 7 wins and have put up 6 or more 5 times during this stretch. They have also not allowed more than 3 runs in any game during the win streak and have allowed a mere 9 runs total over the 7 games. I expect more of the same with Mike Clevinger on the mound for Cleveland and the Cardinals sending out John Gant. Clevinger is 6-2 with a 3.00 ERA in 15 starts, owns a 2.27 ERA in 7 road starts and a 1.69 ERA in his last 3 outings. Gant is 0-2 with a 6.00 ERA in 3 starts and has a 6.52 ERA and 1.449 WHIP in 2 home outings. Bet the Indians -120!

The Key: The Tampa Bay Rays just swept the Yankees at home last series. They went 5-5 during a 10-game stretch against the Astros and Yankees. Now they will take down the Nationals in Game 1 of this series Monday. The Nationals had a big comeback on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball last night over the Phillies and I always like fading teams off the Sunday Night game. Blake Snell has been awesome this season for the Rays are 9-4 with a 2.48 ERA and 1.06 WHIP in 16 starts. He has been lights out at home, going 4-1 with a 0.96 ERA and 0.94 WHIP in 6 home starts. Gio Gonzalez has faltered of late at 0-2 with a 7.43 ERA and 1.95 WHIP in his last 3 starts. Gonzalez is also 2-2 with a 4.64 ERA and 1.74 WHIP in 4 lifetime starts vs. Tampa Bay. The Nationals are 0-5 in their last 5 games following a win. Washington is 1-5 in its last 6 road games. The Rays are 6-0 in their last 6 home games. The Rays are 10-2 in Snell’s last 12 home starts vs. a team with a winning record. Take Tampa Bay.

MLB | Mariners vs Orioles
Play on: Mariners -117 at pinnacle

It doesn't take much for me to want to fade the Orioles, who are a staggering 30 games below .500 already. The spot, pitching matchup and value price are enough to do it here. It's Felix Hernandez versus Andrew Cashner. Hernandez isn't the King Felix of old, but he's in good form and rates a strong edge on Cashner, who hasn't been reliable since his days pitching at Petco Park with the Padres five years ago. Hernandez has allowed only one earned in each of his last two starts. Those outings were against the Red Sox and Yankees, too. Now he steps way down in class to face the Orioles, who rank in the bottom-three in runs and batting average. The Orioles have average power, but Hernandez has cut back on the long ball surrendering just two homers during his last seven starts Cashner is 2-8 with a 4.72 ERA on the year. The Mariners are 20-8 versus righthanders. It's a nice plus if the Mariners get back Jean Segura. The Mariners have been on the East Coast the past week. They've gone 1-5 in their last six games. Note, though, those matchups were against the Yankees and Red Sox. The Orioles haven't been home in a week. So they may not have their full focus. Baltimore hasn't played well at Camden Yards losing 11 of its past 12 home contests. The Orioles also have dropped 40 of their last 53 games against a righty starter.

Play on: Rangers -140 at betonline

Texas -140
The Rangers are worth a flyer here on Monday night.
Texas comes in laying juice but grabs a huge edge here pitching wise.
The Rangers send out LH Cole Hamels, who owns a very respectable 3.41 ERA on the season. Hamels has been on the unfortunate end of some lack of run support at times, but he may not need much here.
The Padres boast one of the worst offenses in the MLB, averaging only 3.41 runs per game on the road.
Some trends to note. Padres are 1-4 in their last 5 when their opponent scores 2 runs or less in their previous game. Padres are 1-5 in their last 6 road games.
Grab the home side here.
Back Texas.

#MLB FREE PICK FROM MIKE LUNDIN
The New York Mets are just 13-24 at home on the season, but right-hander Seth Lugo (2-2, 2.85 ERA) can't be blamed for the poor results as he's 1-0 with a 0.90 ERA in 13 games (two starts) at home this season.
I like the Mets to pick up a win here, hosting a Pirates team heading to New York on a five-game losing streak during which they've scored a total of just eight runs. The Mets may have dropped six in a row, but they have at least been productive at the plate during the slide with 32 runs scored for a 5.33 rpg average during that span.
Pittsburgh righty Jameson Taillon (4-6, 4.03 ERA) was tagged with three runs on seven hits and a walk across five innings of a 3-2 loss to the Brewers his last time out. He's served up a homer in three straight starts.
Mets are 13-3 in Lugo's last 16 starts vs. a team with a losing record and 9-3 in his last 12 home starts.

MLB | Diamondbacks vs Marlins
Play on: Diamondbacks -121 at BMaker

My free play is on the Arz D'backs at 7:10 ET. Arizona completed a four-game sweep at Pittsburgh on Sunday (3-0 victory), winning for the 12th time in its last 16 games. Five-time All-Star Paul Goldschmidt, who has hit safely in 17 of his last 18 contests, should be back in the lineup tonight, after resting in Sunday’s win. The National League West leaders (D'backs are 2 1/2 games up on the Dodgers) gave up just six runs against the Pirates and Monday will open a four-game series in Miami with the Marlins. The Marlins enter this series fresh off their first winning road trip of the season (5-4) after outlasting Colorado 8-5 on Sunday. However, Miami checks in with an NL-worst record of 31-47 and sits in last-place in the NL East, 14 games back of the division-leading Braves. The Marlins are hoping for a better result than when they were outscored 21-4 while getting swept in three games at Arizona to start June.
Arizona's Shelby Miller makes his first trip to a major-league mound in more than 14 months when he takes the mound in Marlins Park on Monday. He underwent Tommy John surgery after making just four starts last season and hopes to help the Diamondbacks win for the ninth time in 10 road games. Miller won a career-high 15 games in 2013 with St. Louis and makes his first appearance in the majors since April 23, 2017. His career record is below .500 (37-49) but he owns a 3.67 ERA.
Miami's Dan Straily (2-3, 4.89 ERA) is appealing a five-game suspension for hitting Buster Posey in Tuesday’s start at San Francisco, when he lasted only 1.1 innings and gave up four runs. He had limited opponents to three runs or fewer in six of his previous eight starts before the 6-3 loss against the Giants last time out. Straily faced Arizona earlier this year, allowing one run in 4.1 innings of a 6-1 loss to the Diamondbacks back on June 3.
The Marlins are 11-11 in June, which has already made this their best month of the season. A 10-game homestand is not necessarily good news though, as they have more road wins (17-26) than home victories (14-21) in 2018. Meanwhile, Arizona has a winning record at home (23-16) and on the road (21-17) this year plus the D'backs are 16-6 in June after a poor May (8-19). Shelby is an unknown quantity at the moment but I expect the Diamondbacks to move to 4-0 against the Marlins in 2018 with a victory tonight.
Good luck...Larry

The San Diego left-hander recently returned from the disabled list and the problems he was having before going on the DL have continued.
