Giants vs. Padres Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 07/31/2018

The San Francisco Giants have emerged from a funk and look for their third straight victory when they visit the San Diego Padres on Tuesday afternoon for the finale of their two-game set. San Francisco lost six of seven games before posting back-to-back wins, including Monday's series-opening 5-3 victory in 12 innings.

The Giants once again reached the .500 mark with Monday's victory but badly need to improve on their 22-32 road record if they wish to be a viable National League wild-card contender. Gorkys Hernandez served as the hero in the series opener by leading off the 12th with a blast to left field, his 13th homer of the campaign. San Diego continues to sink in the NL West as it has suffered six straight defeats and 13 in its last 15 contests. Eric Hosmer has recorded back-to-back two-hit performances but is batting a dreadful .182 this month.

TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, NBCS Bay Area (San Francisco), FS San Diego

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Dereck Rodriguez (5-1, 2.75 ERA) vs. Padres LH Clayton Richard (7-10, 5.05)

Rodriguez has won four consecutive decisions since last losing on June 9. The 26-year-old rookie has allowed fewer than three runs in each of his last six outings after giving up two runs over six innings in a no-decision against Milwaukee in his last turn. Rodriguez yielded just one run and four hits over seven frames in a no-decision against the Padres on June 24.

Richard has dropped both starts since the All-Star break as he was roughed up for 13 runs in just eight innings. The 34-year-old is 0-4 over his last six starts after winning his previous four outings and six of seven decisions. Richard is 1-1 with a 7.20 ERA in three starts versus the Giants this year and owns a 7-8 record and 4.50 ERA in 23 career meetings (20 starts).

WALK-OFFS

1. The Giants placed RHP Johnny Cueto (elbow) and 3B Pablo Sandoval (hamstring) on the 10-day disabled list, activated 2B Joe Panik (groin) from the DL and recalled INF Kelby Tomlinson from Triple-A Sacramento.

2. San Diego 1B Wil Myers struck out four times over six hitless at-bats in the opener and has fanned 30 times in his last 15 contests.

3. San Francisco C Buster Posey went 2-for-6 with an RBI on Monday and is 9-for-18 with five RBIs and four runs scored over his last four games.

PREDICTION: Giants 4, Padres 2

Mets vs. Nationals Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 07/30/2018

The Washington Nationals and the New York Mets could look different by the time the National League East rivals square off for the opener of a two-game series in Washington on Tuesday. Both clubs could be active in front of Tuesday's non-waiver trade deadline, and some of the biggest pieces on the market reside on the teams.

The Nationals were thought to be using last weekend's series against Miami as an indicator of whether they were still in the race in the NL East and won the first two games but managed a total of one run in falling on Saturday and Sunday to enter the week one game under .500 at 52-53. "We've put ourselves in this position. They have to do what they've got to do," Washington outfielder Adam Eaton told reporters of the front office. "But the guys that are in this clubhouse every day, and whether they're here or not, we're going to all be pulling in the same direction and doing what we have to do in order to win ballgames." New York could bring back the biggest haul if it decided to make ace right-hander Jacob deGrom available, but another starting pitcher - righty Zack Wheeler - is the name getting tossed around the most as a potential trade candidate out of the Mets' rotation. New York will send lefty Steven Matz to the mound in Tuesday's opener while the Nationals counter with righty Tanner Roark.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), MASN 2 (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets LH Steven Matz (5-8, 3.79 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Tanner Roark (4-12, 4.55)

Matz snapped a three-start losing streak last time out while holding the Pittsburgh Pirates to four runs on three hits and a pair of walks in six innings. The 27-year-old served up a pair of home runs in that outing but struck out a season-high nine. Matz is making his fourth start against Washington this season and looking for his first win after going 0-1 with a 3.52 ERA in the first three chances.

Roark snapped a string of seven consecutive outings without a win (0-6) when he breezed through eight scoreless innings at Milwaukee on Wednesday. The Illinois native, who had allowed at least four runs in five of his previous six turns, scattered three hits and walked one while striking out a career-high 11 to pick up his first win since June 6. Roark's last loss came before the All-Star break at New York, when he was reached for four runs on eight hits and a pair of walks in five innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Nationals LHP Sean Doolittle underwent an MRI on Monday to determine the status of a stress reaction in his left foot.

2. New York SS Amed Rosario is 0-for-13 over his last three games, dropping his batting average to .241.

3. Washington SS Trea Turner apologized Sunday for insensitive tweets made as a teenager that resurfaced after the game.

PREDICTION: Nationals 3, Mets 2

Orioles vs. Yankees Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 07/30/2018

The New York Yankees bid to keep their focus on the immediate task at hand on Tuesday when they wrap up their homestand with the opener of an abbreviated two-game series against the Baltimore Orioles. The Yankees (67-37), who will begin a four-game set at rival Boston on Thursday, head into their series with the Orioles (32-74) after scoring 23 runs en route to taking three of four from Kansas City.

Aaron Hicks improved to 7-for-10 with four runs scored in the series after belting a two-run homer and falling a triple shy of the cycle in Sunday's 6-3 win over the Royals. The 28-year-old is 7-for-21 against Baltimore this season and fellow outfielder Brett Gardner is 13-for-41 with six extra-base hits (five doubles, one homer) versus the Orioles. While New York has aspirations of keeping pace with the red-hot Red Sox, cellar-dwelling Baltimore has won three of four games in the Bronx this year and even vented some frustration for its lost season by erupting for 37 runs en route to winning three straight against Tampa Bay over the weekend. Adam Jones, who is 11-for-30 versus Tuesday starter Masahiro Tanaka, had three hits during Sunday's 11-5 victory and is batting .417 during a nine-game hitting streak.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, MASN (Baltimore), YES (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Yefry Ramirez (1-3, 3.49 ERA) vs. Yankees RH Masahiro Tanaka (8-2, 4.09)

Ramirez heads into a tilt with his former organization with a bit of momentum after posting his first major-league win on Tuesday. The 24-year-old Dominican, who was acquired from the Yankees for international signing bonus money last summer, allowed three solo homers on four hits with six strikeouts over five innings of a 7-6 triumph over Boston. Ramirez struggled against the Yankees in his last encounter on July 9, permitting four runs on nine hits over four frames to pick up the loss.

Tanaka improved to 6-0 with a 3.47 ERA in his last 12 starts on Tuesday after scattering three hits and striking out nine in a complete-game 4-0 win over Tampa Bay. The 29-year-old owns a 2.29 ERA in three starts (19 2/3 innings), although he permitted three runs across 4 1/3 innings of no-decision versus Baltimore earlier this month. Tanaka picked up the win against the Orioles on June 2 despite surrendering three homers and four runs total in 5 1/3 frames of an 8-5 triumph.

WALK-OFFS

1. Baltimore 2B Jonathan Schoop, who was named the American League Player of the Week on Monday, has launched seven homers in his past nine games.

2. New York 2B Gleyber Torres is just 3-for-16 with five strikeouts since returning from the disabled list.

3. Orioles 1B Chris Davis, who is just 5-for-27 versus the Yankees this season, had three homers, five RBIs and eight runs scored in the series against the Rays.

PREDICTION: Yankees 5, Orioles 2

Cubs vs. Pirates Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 07/30/2018

The Pittsburgh Pirates have climbed to the fringes of the National League playoff race, and they have a chance to put another dent in the deficit. Winners of 15 of their last 19, the Pirates host the first-place Chicago Cubs for two critical games starting Tuesday.

The Cubs are clinging to a 1 1/2-game lead over second-place Milwaukee in the NL Central entering the week, but the Pirates have clawed within seven games of the lead. Pittsburgh's Gregory Polanco will try to keep up his hot streak, as he is 8-for-13 over the past three games. The Cubs have a 5-4 lead in the season series and took two of three in their previous trip to Pittsburgh from May 28-30. A couple Cubs will be excited to face Jameson Taillon for the first time this season as Javier Baez is 6-for-10 with a homer and Anthony Rizzo is 8-for-13 with two homers against the right-hander.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, NBCS Chicago, AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs LH Jon Lester (12-3, 3.06 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Jameson Taillon (7-8, 3.73)

After dropping a clunker coming out of the All-Star break, Lester got back on track last time out when he held Arizona to one run over six innings. The 34-year-old struck out seven and didn't issue a walk after giving up 14 free passes over his previous four outings. Lester is 7-5 with a 3.39 ERA in 15 starts against the Pirates, including a 2-0 mark in three meetings this season.

Taillon took a tough-luck loss last time out, but he posted his 11th consecutive start allowing three or fewer earned runs. The 26-year-old held Cleveland to two runs over seven innings in the 4-0 defeat last Wednesday for his fourth quality start in his past six outings. Taillon is 2-3 with a 5.06 ERA in five starts against the Cubs.

WALK-OFFS

1. Rizzo has homered in three of his past four games since ending a 25-game drought.

2. Pirates SS Jordy Mercer is 9-for-25 during an eight-game hitting streak.

3. Cubs INF David Bote has multiple hits in three of his past five contests.

PREDICTION: Cubs 5, Pirates 3

Angels vs. Rays Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 07/30/2018

The Tampa Bay Rays were quite generous on the mound over the weekend, and the end result saw the team outscored 37-12 during a three-game losing skid. After a day off, the Rays (53-53) look to tighten up defensively on Tuesday when they host the opener of a three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels (54-53).

"It's one series, we'll bounce back. ... Feels good to have an off-day. Kind of get these butt whuppins out of our head. Be ready to put it on the next team we go against," Tampa Bay's Mallex Smith told reporters after Sunday's 11-5 setback to Baltimore. C.J. Cron belted a pair of solo homers in that contest, but is just 3-for-17 this season against an Angels team with which he spent his first four seasons in the majors. Los Angeles' offense was clicking to the tune of 38 runs during the team's four-game winning streak before allowing seven in the first inning en route to dropping an 8-5 setback to Seattle on Sunday. Justin Upton launched a two-run homer in that contest and is 10-for-18 with five RBIs and as many runs scored in his last four games.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FS West (Los Angeles), FS Sun (Tampa Bay)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels LH Tyler Skaggs (8-6, 2.62 ERA) vs. Rays RH Ryne Stanek (1-3, 2.43)

Skaggs improved to 5-2 with a 1.44 ERA in his last eight outings on Wednesday after allowing one earned run on four hits over six innings of an 11-3 triumph versus the Chicago White Sox. The 27-year-old struck out a season-high nine batters in that encounter and fanned seven while permitting one run over six frames of a hard-luck loss to the Rays on May 17. Cron belted a solo homer versus Skaggs, who owns an 0-1 mark with a 4.50 ERA in two career outings versus Tampa Bay.

Stanek surrendered a pair of homers to Baltimore on Saturday to fall to 0-2 with a 2.38 ERA in 15 starts this season. The 27-year-old is expected to work just two innings at most before giving way to the bullpen, with left-hander Ryan Yarbrough and right-hander Austin Pruitt likely long-relief options. Stanek struggled in his lone appearance versus the Angels in 2018, permitting a two-run homer to Mike Trout on May 19 before exiting without retiring a batter.

WALK-OFFS

1. Trout is 9-for-29 with four homers, nine RBIs and 14 walks in 10 contests since the All-Star break.

2. Tampa Bay CF Kevin Kiermaier is 6-for-16 with two homers, three RBIs and four runs scored during his four-game hitting streak.

3. Los Angeles INF David Fletcher is 15-for-35 with eight runs scored in his last nine contests.

PREDICTION: Angels 6, Rays 2

Reds vs. Tigers Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 07/30/2018

The Cincinnati Reds are in the midst of their fifth consecutive losing season and sit in last place in the National League Central, making them one of the more interesting teams ahead of Tuesday's trade deadline. The Reds will sort out who remains on the roster when they visit the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday for the opener of a two-game interleague series.

Cincinnati put the trade rumors aside long enough to win three straight over NL East-leading Philadelphia over the weekend but is active on the market with right-hander Matt Harvey a leading candidate to be dealt. The Reds are winners of five of their last seven games while dodging the rumors and are beginning a nine-game road trip with the visit to Detroit. The Tigers are undergoing a rebuild as well and used a starter - left-hander Francisco Liriano - in relief Sunday in order to showcase him for opposing scouts. Right-hander Homer Bailey's contract, injury history and recent performance ensure that he will stay with Cincinnati through the deadline, and he will take the mound Tuesday opposite Detroit lefty Matthew Boyd.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FS Ohio (Cincinnati), FS Detroit

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds RH Homer Bailey (1-7, 6.29 ERA) vs. Tigers LH Matthew Boyd (5-9, 4.53)

Bailey turned in his fourth quality start of the season and first since April 15 when he came off the disabled list last Tuesday and limited the St. Louis Cardinals to two runs on five hits in 6 2/3 innings. The 32-year-old, who struck out eight in that no decision, has not reached 100 innings since 2014 and is due $23 million next season with a mutual option for $25 million in 2020. Bailey is making his second career start against Detroit and is 6-8 with a 5.92 ERA in 19 career interleague starts.

Boyd is coming off back-to-back solid outings, during which he allowed a total of three runs in 11 innings against the Boston Red Sox and Kansas City Royals. The 27-year-old earned his first win since June 7 by holding the Royals to two runs Wednesday and struck out seven without walking a batter. Boyd did not have his best stuff at Cincinnati on June 19, when he was ripped for five runs on six hits and three walks in four innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Reds 1B Joey Votto did not record an extra-base hit in any of his last 10 games.

2. Tigers RHP Warwick Saupold was outrighted to Triple-A Toledo after clearing waivers Monday.

3. Detroit RF Nick Castellanos is 5-for-38 over the last 10 games, dropping his average from .308 to .292.

PREDICTION: Reds 6, Tigers 5

Phillies vs. Red Sox Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 07/31/2018

The Boston Red Sox worked overtime to register their major league-best 75th victory of the season and picked up veteran second baseman Ian Kinsler for a pair of minor leaguers in a trade with the Los Angeles Angels on Monday. The Red Sox look to have another productive day when they host the slumping Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday for the finale of their two-game interleague series.

Blake Swihart extended his hitting streak to 10 contests (12-for-28) with a walk-off double in the 13th inning on Monday as Boston extended its winning streak to four contests and increased its lead in the American League East to six games. Drew Pomeranz, who could lose his spot in the rotation if he does not turn things around, gets the start for the Red Sox on Tuesday against Jake Arrieta, who is 1-1 in a pair of interleague starts in 2018. Philadelphia leads the National League East by one-half game over Atlanta after losing four in a row and totaling just seven runs during the slide. Rhys Hoskins recorded a pair of doubles in the series opener for the Phillies and has registered seven homers and 13 RBIs over his last 10 contests.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, ESPN, NBCS Philadelphia, NESN (Boston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Jake Arrieta (8-6, 3.45 ERA) vs. Red Sox LH Drew Pomeranz (1-4, 6.91)

Arrieta is unbeaten in five starts, including a win last time out as he held the Los Angeles Dodgers to three runs - two earned - and five hits with six strikeouts over six innings. The 32-year-old TCU product avoided a loss in his first start following the All-Star break on July 20, when he gave up five runs over 3 1/3 frames against San Diego. Mitch Moreland is 3-for-8 with a homer versus Arrieta, who is 1-4 with a 5.27 ERA in eight career appearances (seven starts) against Boston.

Pomeranz struggled in his first start following a stint of almost two months on the disabled list, allowing four runs and four hits (two homers) in 4 2/3 innings. The 29-year-old Ole Miss product is winless in his last six starts, completing more than five frames just once in that stretch, and owns a 7.85 ERA and .355 opponents' batting average at home in four outings. Asdrubal Cabrera is 2-for-4 with a double against Pomeranz, who is 0-2 with a 3.60 ERA in four career meetings with the Phillies.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cabrera recorded a double and a single on Monday and is 2-for-14 in three games since being acquired from the New York Mets.

2. Red Sox starting pitchers have allowed just 11 earned runs over 70 1/3 innings (1.41 ERA) in their last 12 contests.

3. Kinsler, who will fill in for All-Star 2B Dustin Pedroia (knee), is batting .239 with 13 homers and 32 RBis in 91 games this season.

Marlins vs. Braves Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 07/30/2018

There have been plenty of trade rumors surrounding the Atlanta Braves and a perceived need for a third baseman, but Johan Camargo continues showing there is no need for a deal at that position entering the middle contest of a three-game home series Tuesday against the Miami Marlins. Camargo finished 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles in Monday's 5-3 victory, and since the start of June is batting .278 with nine doubles, seven homers and 30 RBIs in 46 games.

Monday featured the continuation of Freddie Freeman's assault on Miami pitching, as the Braves first baseman belted his sixth homer of the season against the Marlins and comes into Tuesday hitting .450 in 10 games against them in 2018. The Marlins did hit their first homer since July 24 (also against the Braves) as right fielder Brian Anderson belted a two-run shot in the first inning, but fell for the seventh time in 10 games against Atlanta this season. Miami third baseman Martin Prado finished with two hits Monday, and since coming off the disabled list July 5 the veteran is hitting .333 with 10 RBIs in 18 games. Catcher J.T. Realmuto went 1-for-5 with a double in the series opener to extend his hitting streak to six games for the Marlins, driving in seven runs during that stretch.

TV: 7:35 p.m. ET, FS Florida (Miami), FS Southeast (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins RH Dan Straily (4-4, 4.07 ERA) vs. Braves LH Kolby Allard (NR)

Straily makes his sixth start of July and hopes to cap a solid month, one in which he has posted a 2.84 ERA with a 1.20 WHIP while holding opponents to a .205 batting average. The 29-year-old has won just once this month, getting a no-decision Thursday against Washington after allowing three runs on five hits with six strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings. Straily won back-to-back starts against Atlanta on May 11 and May 18, allowing two earned runs with 11 strikeouts across 12 innings.

Ranked as Atlanta's No. 8 prospect by MLB Pipeline and No. 93 in all of the majors, Allard makes his major-league debut after excelling at Triple-A Gwinnett as a 20-year-old. Atlanta's first-round pick in 2015, Allard posted a 1.21 WHIP at Gwinnett in 18 starts, walking only 33 hitters in 109 1/3 innings. Allard drew a no-decision in his last start in the minors on July 22, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits in five innings with six strikeouts.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Marlins, who are 15-24 against the NL East this season, play 37 of their final 54 games against division competition.

2. Atlanta LF Ronald Acuna hit his 10th homer of the season in the fifth inning, becoming the seventh player in franchise history to hit double-digit homers as a 20-year-old.

3. After Monday's game, the Braves traded three minor-league players for Cincinnati OF Adam Duvall.

Royals vs. White Sox Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 07/30/2018

The Kansas City Royals and the Chicago White Sox are in similar positions in the American League Central standings but are at opposite ends of the rebuilding process. The two losing clubs will square off after the trade deadline Tuesday when the White Sox host the Royals in the opener of a three-game series.

Kansas City is at the end of a window of contention that saw them ascend all the way to a World Series crown in 2015 but could be staring at another long rebuild while sitting 41 games below .500. "I'm embarrassed the way our major-league team has performed, OK?" Royals general manager Dayton Moore said during an interview on MLB Network radio. "I didn't necessarily expect us to be in the playoffs this year, but I didn't expect us to be on pace to lose 100-plus games. That's embarrassing to me personally, it's embarrassing to our organization. (Owner) Mr. Glass doesn't expect that, either, and so we've got to do a better job of that." The White Sox are well into their own rebuild and have several talented young players on the major league roster and more in the pipeline. One of the few holdovers from the 2015 World Series team, left-hander Danny Duffy, will take the mound for Kansas City on Tuesday opposite Chicago veteran righty James Shields.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, FS Kansas City, WGN (Chicago)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals LH Danny Duffy (6-9, 4.70 ERA) vs. White Sox RH James Shields (4-12, 4.53)

Duffy would be an attractive trade chip for a contending team, but Moore expressed a desire to hang onto the lefty in an effort to contend sooner rather than later. The 29-year-old yielded a total of one run during a three-start stretch from July 9-20 but fell off that pace while serving up seven runs on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings against Detroit on Wednesday. Duffy breezed through seven scoreless innings while yielding four hits and striking out eight in a win at Chicago on July 14.

Shields, one of the few veterans on the White Sox, could be dealt prior to Tuesday's contest but is not helping his value with performances like Wednesday at Los Angeles. The 36-year-old was ripped for six runs on seven hits - three home runs - in four innings against the Angels. Shields' last win came at home over Kansas City on July 13, when he surrendered four runs (two earned) on five hits over 6 2/3 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Royals SS/3B Alcides Escobar went 0-for-11 over the last three games, dropping his batting average to .197.

2. The White Sox acquired LHP Caleb Frare from the New York Yankees on Sunday in exchange for international bonus pool money.

3. Chicago C Omar Narvaez recorded his first career triple on Sunday while finishing a double shy of the cycle.

Indians vs. Twins Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 07/31/2018

The Minnesota Twins hope to continue their success against the American League Central-leading Cleveland Indians on Tuesday, when they host the middle contest of their three-game home set, despite being in selling mode at the non-waiver trade deadline. The Twins have won seven of their 10 meetings with Cleveland this season after recording a walk-off 5-4 victory in the series opener on the same day they dealt two productive veteran pitchers.

The Twins acquired four prospects in separate trades as right-handed starter Lance Lynn was sent to the New York Yankees and left-handed reliever Zach Duke was shipped to Seattle on Monday before they climbed within eight games of the Indians in the division. Kyle Gibson, who has allowed three runs over 12 2/3 innings in two starts against Cleveland this year, will try to help Minnesota move closer when he starts opposite Trevor Bauer on Tuesday. The Indians, who lead the majors with 147 runs this month, could be prominent Tuesday at the trade deadline as they look for an outfielder and perhaps some more pitching help. The big positive out of the series opener was All-Star Jose Ramirez, who broke out of a slump with a pair of homers to tie Boston's J.D. Martinez for the major-league lead with 32.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland), FS North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Trevor Bauer (9-6, 2.32 ERA) vs. Twins RH Kyle Gibson (5-7, 3.42)

Bauer registered his ninth quality start in 10 outings on Wednesday, when he limited Pittsburgh to two hits and struck out 10 over seven scoreless innings. The 27-year-old UCLA product is 2-0 with a 1.87 ERA in four starts this month but lost his only meeting with Minnesota on June 2, when he yielded seven runs - three earned - over 5 2/3 frames. Eddie Rosario is 12-for-30 with two homers versus Bauer, who is 4-7 with a 4.84 ERA in 17 career games (16 starts) against the Twins.

Gibson held Boston to one run on four hits and two walks over eight innings of a 2-1 victory on Thursday. It was the third win in four starts for the 30-year-old native of Indiana and he has worked at least seven frames in six of his last nine turns. Edwin Encarnacion (7-for-22, four homers), Yan Gomes (12-for-27, two) and Jason Kipnis (12-for-27, one) have hit well against Gibson, who is 3-6 with 5.21 ERA in 15 career games versus Cleveland.

WALK-OFFS

1. Ramirez has hit five homers against the Twins this season while SS Francisco Lindor and Encarnacion have belted four apiece.

2. Minnesota SS Jorge Polanco is 9-for-27 during his seven-game hitting streak and has notched four RBIs in his last three contests.

3. Cleveland 1B Yonder Alonso is 11-for-34 with five homers and 11 RBIs in 10 games since the All-Star break.

Rockies vs. Cardinals Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 07/31/2018

Marcell Ozuna is displaying the power that has been missing most of the season and aims to homer for a fourth straight game when the St. Louis Cardinals host the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday for the second contest of their four-game series. Ozuna hit his first career walk-off blast in the 10th inning of the opener as the Cardinals posted a 5-4 victory.

Ozuna has gone deep just 13 times this season after belting a career-best 37 shots for Miami last year. The 27-year-old has recorded just 24 extra-base hits to go with a lackluster .396 slugging percentage after registering 69 and .548, respectively, in 2017. St. Louis, which has won four of its last six games, overcame a 4-0 deficit as the Rockies lost for only the sixth time in 25 contests. National League home-run leader Nolan Arenado (28) hit his fifth career grand slam for the Colorado, giving him five homers over his last nine games.

TV: 8:15 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet-Rocky Mountain (Colorado), FS Midwest (St. Louis)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies RH Jon Gray (8-7, 5.16 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Jack Flaherty (4-5, 3.28)

Gray has returned from a brief demotion to Triple-A Albuquerque to produce back-to-back solid starts, giving up two runs and six hits over 14 1/3 innings. The 26-year-old defeated Seattle in the first outing and then allowed just two runs and one hit over seven frames in a no-decision against Houston in his last turn. Gray is 0-1 with an 11.88 ERA in two career starts against the Cardinals and has struggled with Ozuna (4-for-7) and Matt Carpenter (3-for-6, three RBIs).

Flaherty registered eight strikeouts over five innings in a loss to Cincinnati in his last turn as he gave up three runs and four hits. The 22-year-old has worked five or fewer frames in four straight turns and eight of his last 11. Flaherty has struck out 104 batters in 85 innings and is holding opposing batters to a .209 average.

WALK-OFFS

1. Carpenter went 3-for-4 with two RBIs in the series opener and is batting .333 with 10 homers and 19 RBIs this month.

2. Colorado All-Star SS Trevor Story was limited to pinch-hitting duties in the opener but will be back in the starting lineup on Tuesday.

3. St. Louis placed RHP Luke Gregerson (shoulder) on the 10-day disabled list, optioned LHP Tyler Webb to Triple-A Memphis, added LHP Chasen Shreve - who was acquired from New York Yankees - to the roster and activated RHP Carlos Martinez (oblique) from the DL, but the latter left Monday's start after 4 2/3 innings due to shoulder soreness.

Texas Rangers vs. Arizona Diamondbacks Preview and Predictions 07-31-2018 in MLB

MLB Previews 31st July 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 07/31/2018

The Texas Rangers look to conclude their five-game road trip with a perfect record when they visit the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday for the finale of their two-game interleague series. Texas surrendered 41 runs while being swept in a four-game home set by Oakland but outscored host Houston 22-8 while winning three straight and posted a 9-5 victory over Arizona in Monday's series opener.

Shin-Soo Choo homered twice and drove in four runs while Rougned Odor also went deep for the Rangers, who scored nine times over the final five innings. Choo's multi-homer performance was the 10th of his career and allowed him to reach the 20-blast plateau for the sixth time in the major leagues. Arizona returned to the desert after registering a three-game sweep in San Diego but kicked off its nine-game homestand with its fourth loss in five contests at Chase Field. Steven Souza Jr. belted a three-run homer on Monday while Eduardo Escobar recorded two hits and two RBIs, making him 4-for-8 over his first two games after being acquired from Minnesota.

TV: 9:40 p.m. ET, FS Southwest (Texas), FS Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers RH Bartolo Colon (5-9, 5.02 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks RH Zack Godley (11-6, 4.73)

Colon makes his fifth attempt at becoming the all-time winningest pitcher from Latin America as he fell to 0-4 with a 5.96 ERA in four turns this month when he surrendered six runs and nine hits over seven innings against Oakland on Thursday. The 45-year-old Dominican, who hasn't won since June 30, is tied with Nicaragua's Dennis Martinez with 245 major-league victories. Colon is 1-2 with a 3.94 ERA in five career starts versus Arizona.

Godley saw his unbeaten streak reach five appearances (four starts) on Thursday despite yielding four runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings against the Cubs in Chicago. The 28-year-old native of South Carolina has been keeping the ball in the park, as he has not allowed a homer in five starts and one relief outing this month. Godley, who has posted a 3.88 ERA at home as opposed to a 5.46 mark on the road this year, will be facing Texas for the first time in his career.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Rangers traded RHP Keone Kela to Pittsburgh for minor league LHP Taylor Hearn and a prospect to be named.

2. With a victory on Tuesday, Colon also will tie Houston's Justin Verlander for the most interleague wins (32) in major-league history.

3. Arizona 3B Jake Lamb will have his injured left shoulder examined by an orthopedic surgeon in Los Angeles on Tuesday.

Toronto Blue Jays vs. Oakland Athletics Preview and Predictions 07-31-2018 in MLB

MLB Previews 31st July 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 07/31/2018

The Oakland Athletics failed to take advantage of Coors Field over the weekend but bounced back offensively in Monday's series-opening victory. Oakland hopes to extend its home winning streak to four contests when it hosts the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday for the middle contest of their three-game series.

After scoring 51 runs during a six-game winning streak, the Athletics registered only four while being swept of a three-game set in Colorado but rediscovered their swing on Monday as they rolled to a 10-1 victory over Toronto. Jonathan Lucroy drove in three runs while Jed Lowrie and Khris Davis each recorded two RBIs as Oakland reached double digits in runs for the third time in its last five wins. Toronto managed only five hits en route to its fifth loss in seven contests, although three were for extra bases. Aledmys Diaz kept the Blue Jays from being shut out on Monday as he led off the ninth inning with his second homer in as many games, which extended his RBI streak to three contests.

TV: 10:05 p.m. ET, Sportsnet (Toronto), NBCS California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays RH Sam Gaviglio (2-3, 4.65 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Trevor Cahill (2-2, 3.43)

Gaviglio is hoping to snap a winless streak that reached 11 starts on Wednesday, when he came away with a no-decision against Minnesota after giving up three runs and six hits in five innings. The 28-year-old native of Oregon has not notched a victory since winning in Philadelphia on May 25 after allowing three runs and three hits over six frames in his second turn of the season. Gaviglio made his first start of 2018 versus the Athletics, settling for a no-decision after scattering six hits over 5 1/3 scoreless innings on May 19, and suffered a loss in his first career outing versus Oakland on July 6, 2017, when he was tagged for seven runs and nine hits in 4 2/3 frames while with Seattle.

Cahill recorded his first victory since his season debut on April 17 despite surrendering five runs on seven hits and three walks in five innings at Texas on Thursday. The 30-year-old Californian has posted a sparkling 0.80 ERA in five turns at home this year against a 6.44 mark in six outings on the road. Cahill has struggled in five career starts against Toronto, going 1-3 with a 6.83 ERA.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Blue Jays activated Marco Estrada (gluteus) from the 10-day disabled list on Monday and designated fellow RHP Oliver Drake for assignment.

2. Oakland recalled Ryan Dull from Triple-A Nashville on Monday and optioned fellow RHP Frankie Montas to the Sounds.

3. Toronto acquired RHPs Ken Giles, David Paulino and Hector Perez from Houston on Monday for RHP Roberto Osuna, who currently is serving a 75-game suspension under the MLB-MLBPA Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse policy.

Brewers vs. Dodgers Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 07/31/2018

After scoring a total of three runs in their last two games, the Los Angeles Dodgers look to jump-start their offense Tuesday when they continue their four-game series against the visiting Milwaukee Brewers. The Dodgers have lost two straight following a three-game winning streak while the Brewers have won six of their last eight to pull within one game of the first-place Chicago Cubs in the National League Central.

Eric Thames belted a three-run homer and Christian Yelich extended his hitting streak to 14 games in Monday's 5-2 victory as Milwaukee improved to 4-1 on its eight-game road trip. Yelich, the reigning NL Player of the Week, has hit safely in 19 of his last 20 games and is 29-for-59 with four homers and 15 RBIs during his hitting streak. The Dodgers have recorded a combined seven hits in their past two games and could use a spark from All-Star outfielder Matt Kemp, who is hitless in his last 18 at-bats. Infielder Manny Machado homered and walked twice on Monday in his Dodger Stadium debut to extend his on-base streak to a career-high 30 games.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FS Wisconsin (Milwaukee), SportsNet LA (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers LH Wade Miley (1-1, 2.01 ERA) vs. Dodgers RH Walker Buehler (4-3, 3.92)

Miley turned in a solid outing last Thursday against San Francisco but received a no-decision after allowing two runs on six hits over five innings. The 31-year-old native of Louisiana has walked 13 batters in his first five starts across 22 1/3 innings after missing much of the season due to groin and oblique injuries. Miley is 3-5 with a 3.86 ERA in 14 career starts (13 games) against the Dodgers, including 3-0 with a 2.41 ERA in six career starts at Dodger Stadium.

Buehler is looking to bounce back from a shaky outing last Wednesday, when he gave up five runs over 4 2/3 innings in a 7-3 loss to Philadelphia. The 24-year-old rookie has shuttled between the Dodgers and the minors this season but appears likely to stay in the rotation moving forward. "Things can change, but the thing is, with Walker, we're very synced up with understanding we need him through the season and into October," manager Dave Roberts told reporters. "He's a special player."

WALK-OFFS

1. The Brewers lead the majors with a record of 44-21 in night games this season.

2. The Dodgers placed Ross Stripling on the 10-day disabled list with right big toe inflammation and recalled fellow RHP Dylan Floro from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

3. Milwaukee 3B Mike Moustakas is 2-for-13 with no extra-base hits in his first three games since being acquired from Kansas City.

Astros vs. Mariners Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 07/31/2018

The Houston Astros are in a major tailspin and the host Seattle Mariners look to gain more ground on the American League West leaders when they meet on Tuesday for the middle contest of their three-game set. Seattle allowed just four singles in Monday's series-opening 2-0 victory to pull within three games of Houston, which has dropped a season-high five straight contests.

The Astros have been outscored 27-10 during their slide and the last four setbacks have come without All-Star second baseman Jose Altuve (knee), who currently is on the disabled list. Marwin Gonzalez is in a funk, going hitless in 12 at-bats during the Astros' skid. Seattle slugger Nelson Cruz delivered a two-run double on Monday and is 6-for-16 with three homers and six RBIs over his last four games. Edwin Diaz, the major-league leader in saves, worked a flawless ninth inning for the Mariners to become the fourth player in franchise history to register a 40-save season.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, AT&T SportsNet-Southwest (Houston), ROOT Northwest (Seattle)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Charlie Morton (11-2, 2.89 ERA) vs. Mariners RH Mike Leake (8-6, 4.15)

Morton is 1-1 with a 4.37 ERA in four starts this month after winning 10 of his first 11 decisions. The 34-year-old has registered 10 or more strikeouts on six occasions and his total of 151 is just 12 shy of the career high he set last season. Morton defeated Seattle on April 19, when he gave up three hits over seven scoreless innings, and is 2-2 with a 2.93 ERA in five career meetings.

Leake is winless over his last five starts, going 0-2 with a 4.28 ERA during the drought. The 30-year-old has been up-and-down at pitcher-friendly Safeco Field, compiling a 3-4 record and 4.30 ERA in 11 turns. Leake gave up five runs and seven hits over six innings in a loss on April 18 as he fell to 6-5 with a 3.65 ERA in 13 career appearances (11 starts) against the Astros.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Astros acquired RHP Roberto Osuna, who currently serving a 75-game suspension for domestic violence, from Toronto for RHPs Ken Giles, David Paulino and Hector Perez.

2. Seattle acquired LHP Zach Duke and cash from Minnesota for RHP Chase De Jong and INF Ryan Costello), obtained RHP Adam Warren from the New York Yankees for $1.25 million in international slot money, placed 3B Kyle Seager on the paternity list, optioned 1B Daniel Vogelbach to Triple-A Tacoma, recalled INF Zach Vincej from the same affiliate, designated INF Gordon Beckham for assignment and activated LHP James Paxton (back) - who pitched seven scoreless innings on Monday - from the DL.

3. Houston SS Carlos Correa (back) is expected to begin a minor-league rehab assignment later this week.

# 7 WILD HONEY 7/2

# 5 SPANISH BLESSING 3/1

# 3 SPEED TO RUSH 2/1

WILD HONEY has a formidable shot to take this race. Has performed well lately in sprint races, posting a nifty 57 avg speed rating. She looks strong in this spot and I expect will be on the lead or close at the midpoint. Is difficult not to look at based on Equibase Speed Figures which have been competitive - 50 avg - of late. SPANISH BLESSING - Has competitive Equibase Speed Figures and has to be considered for a bet in this event. Looks solid against this group of horses and will almost certainly be one of the leaders. SPEED TO RUSH - Johnston has one of the best winning percentages in this group with entries running at this distance and surface.

#3 LA FLOR (ML=5/2)
#1 SILENT SMOKE (ML=30/1)

LA FLOR - The jock and conditioner combination here have a high win pct when they combine forces. Just see her latest fig, 57. That one fits well in this group. May be extremely hard to beat this thoroughbred on the grass today. Last time around the track scored a nice turf number, the highest of any of these animals. SILENT SMOKE - Vincent has this filly signed up for the ideal event.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 SHE'S TOO COOL (ML=2/1), #11 LIL MONEY (ML=5/2), #9 ZIPITUPMYSISTER (ML=7/2),

SHE'S TOO COOL - This chalk horse may be out of shape without any recent morning activity. This animal doesn't have a tenacious character. Often finishes in the place or show hole. LIL MONEY - Tough to take this runner at these odds after the result (fifth) in the last event. ZIPITUPMYSISTER - Didn't land in the money on May 15th at Louisiana Downs. Followed it up with another lackluster try.

# 2 HIPARKO 8/1

# 7 PREACHER'S GIFT 3/1

# 8 TRY ME AGAIN 8/5

HIPARKO is my pick and the potential return justifies the dangerous nature of the long odds. It's a good signal that Spiess is using Oliveros on this horse. PREACHER'S GIFT - Has been running soundly lately and ought to be on the front end early on. Must be given a chance based on the very good Equibase Speed Figure recorded in the last race. TRY ME AGAIN - Has to be given a chance versus this field displaying solid figs lately and an average speed figure of 67 under similar conditions. Wagerers should take a good look at this one as this gelding has one of the best win percentages at this distance in this group.

#6 COGNAC CUTIE (ML=6/1)
#2 PURSUIT OF LUTE (ML=4/1)
#4 JUST TOO MUCH (ML=12/1)
#5 UNFLINCHING (ML=5/2)

COGNAC CUTIE - When Rohena and Englehart partner up on horses the win percentage has been tremendous at 30. Rohena was aboard this mare last time out and was impressed enough to take the horse right back. PURSUIT OF LUTE - You always have to be on the watch for revenue generating jockey/handler teams; we have it right here. Have to give this filly a chance. Ran a solid race last time around the track within the last month. Looking at this filly's running lines, I see she's almost always in the top three. Filly is a few starts into a return here. Should give a big race today. Multiple wins in this horse's life, all at Presque Isle Downs. Could add another win in today's race. JUST TOO MUCH - Always be wary of the longer priced horse when a trainer has an 'uncoupled' entry in a race. Was in a $25,000 Claiming race at Presque Isle Downs last out. That clash had a class figure of 92 and she is moving down right here in this race. A certain solid contender. UNFLINCHING - Running over a familiar track, where she has won multiple times before, I have to put this horse at the top of my list of strong contenders. A thoroughbred coming back this rapidly after a solid contest is a good signal. Another way to judge class is earnings per race entered. This entrant has the highest in the bunch. I think she'll be close at the finish line.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 GET SASSY (ML=2/1), #3 PRETTY SURPRISE (ML=8/1),

GET SASSY - Showed very little in the last contest. Really don't see any hint of any improvement today. A pattern of declining speed figs 83/78/73 for this pony. Pedestrian speed rating in the last race at Presque Isle Downs at 1 mile 70 yards. Don't feel this mount will improve too much today. PRETTY SURPRISE - Tough to put any money on this mare on the front end. Likes to land in the money though.

Best and worst MLB starting pitchers to bet on in August
Marc Lawrence

Since being traded away from Baltimore, this is the time of year Jake Arrieta is at his best. He might not throw as hard as he used to, but he still knows how to get hitter's out.

With the MLB trading deadline closed, and the NFL preseason whetting our pigskin palates, the month of August sets the table for the stretch run of the baseball season. The question is which pitchers can we count on to satisfy our tastes, and which ones figure to sour our stomachs? Take a look below.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team-starts over the course of the last three seasons during the month of August. On the flip side, we've also listed pitchers that struggle in August, winning 33% percent or less of their team-start efforts. To qualify, pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each August over the last three years. And for your convenience alongside each record we break down each pitcher’s greatest success or greatest failure rate either home (H) or away (A) within his good or bad month.

Note: * designates a categorical repeat appearance by this pitcher, maintaining status quo from last season’s August list.

I’ll be back next month with September’s Good Month Pitchers. Until then, make like legendary singer and songwriter Neil Diamond and enjoy the hot August nights.

GOOD MONTH PITCHERS

* Jake Arrieta, Philadelphia Phillies • 15-2 (8-1 A)

Since being traded away from Baltimore, this is the time of year Jake Arrieta is at his best. He might not throw as hard as he used to, but he still knows how to get hitter's out. He, along with Aaron Nola, will keep Philadelphia in the hunt for an NL East title. After giving up 23 homers last year, Arrieta has done a much better job keeping the ball in the yard with just 11 HRs allowed this season.

Bartolo Colon, Texas Rangers • 13-5 (7-2 A)

Though Colon has enjoyed success in August, he was not 45 years old, playing in a small ballpark like Texas and on a bad team. It would be great to see him finish with a flourish, but the fact remains the Rangers are so pitching deficient, they have to depend on the veteran. Amazingly, Colon has played in the majors the same number of years the Braves Ronald Acuna Jr, has been alive (20).

Danny Duffy, Kansas City Royals • 11-5 (7-1 H)

After a slow start, the K.C. lefthander had 2.89 ERA in May and June, But July rolled around and Duffy regressed and his ERA is approaching 5.00 again. His command has been awful, already with a career-high in walks for the season and on pace to match or surpass the 27 home runs he conceded two years ago. With this Royals team I do expect this month to be like those of the past for Duffy.

* Corey Kluber, Cleveland Indians • 14-4 (8-1 H)

The Cleveland right-hander has been very good, but not quite as good as 2014 and 2017 when he won Cy Young's. The biggest reason why is a balky right knee, which has caused him to leave more pitches up than usual and is why he's already very close to a career-high in home runs allowed with two months remaining. Nevertheless, he is still one the best hurlers in baseball and with his experience and the Indians having a mostly favorable slate this month, the winning should continue.

Rick Porcello, Boston Red Sox • 10-3 (6-1 H)

To this point, Rick Porcello's season has been a great deal like previous two. In 2016, Porcello won the Cy Young and was 22-4. Last year, the right-hander was completely the opposite and lost 17 games. This season he's 13-4 and often pitched like he did two seasons ago. But he's also left reminders of how bad he can be with a few incredibly bad performances this year. Expect Porcello to have a fine August, just keep in mind a stinker might also be included.

BAD MONTH PITCHERS

James Shields, Chicago White Sox • 5-12 (2-6 H)

It is really a shame to watch Shields end his career this way. The 36-year is on a team in the midst of rebuilding and at this point of his career he no longer has the needed separation in speed between his pitches to make his once feared change-up effective. Add in he's gone from 3-to-1 K/W ratio to 2-to-1 and it's not hard to imagine he and White Sox will keep losing games.

Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

Streaking: Jameson Taillon, Pittsburgh Pirates (7-8, 3.73 ERA, $100)

Hitting has made up a lot of the talk when it comes to the Pirates recent surge, but the pitching staff is doing their part as well. None more than big right-hander Jameson Taillon.

The 27-year-old has been dynamite over his last three starts, pitching to a 1.96 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP, while striking out 21 batters, compared to just four walks. Taillon hopes he can keep the Pirates rolling when they host the Cubs tonight. Pittsburgh is a slight -109 favorite.

Slumping: Steven Matz, New York Mets (5-8, 3.79 ERA, $202)

It's sounding like the Mets Big 3 starting pitchers aren't going anywhere today, in Matz case maybe it's because he's done nothing to help his trade value recently. Matz has a 6.23 ERA with a 1.44 WHIP over his last three starts. The lefty and the Mets are currently moderate +160 road underdogs for today's matchup against the Nationals.

Big Sexy Consistency

Bartolo Colon takes the mound for Texas tonight and the ageless wonder has been the model of consistency this season, but that hasn’t meant good things for Rangers fans. The veteran right-hander has given three or more runs in 10 of his last 12 starts. In each those 12 starts he’s allowed at least five hits and seven or more in 10 of those 12 contests.

Take a hard look at the Diamondbacks Over 8.5 hits (-135) tonight.

Birds Flying Over The Bay

The Blue Jays visit the A's in a matchup of teams taking an opposite approach to the deadline. The Jays are focusing on the future and unloading their tradeable assets, while the A's are making the push for the playoffs.

Besides a bit of a power outage in Colorado of all places the A's bats have been hot since the All-Star break and resumed that in Monday's 10-1 win in the series opener and get to face Sam Gaviglio in Game 2. The right-hander seems to be hitting a rookie wall according to his 7.13 ERA in his last four starts. Plus, the Jays bullpen is in shambles as they trade off their relievers and it could be worse by tonight. Toronto can also hit a bit. The Over 8.5 is worth a look.

Full Nelson

The Phillies and Red Sox continue their battle of division leaders at Fenway Park tonight and starters Jake Arrieta and Drew Pomeranz may get a hand from the man behind the plate. That man is Jeff Nelson and the Under is 12-3 in the last 15 games he has been calling balls and strikes.

Nelson has seen a total of just 6.89 total runs scored per game and has a strike rate pf 62.9 percent in 2018. With at least one very good pitcher on the mound, the Under 10 has some value here.

Your Tuesday freebie is the Over in the Rangers-Diamondbacks game.

Texas continues to be involved in games that feature plenty of crooked-digits, as last night's opener saw the teams combine for 14 runs and an Over.

The Rangers have now seen 9 of their last 12 games played land Over the total, while the Diamondbacks have followed a string of 4 Unders in a row by playing each of their last 5 games Over the posted price.

Since Bartolo Colon has allowed a whopping 15 runs to score in his last 17-plus innings pitched, with his last pair of starts landing Over the total, strong chance the runs add up in the desert again this Tuesday night.

Zack Godley's ERA is a little lofty as well, as he has seen 8 runs on 12 hits over his last 10-plus innings of work with a pair of Overs in the books his last two trips to the slab.

Offense keeps on rolling.

Rangers-Diamondbacks Over the total.

The Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies put on quite a show last night, with the Sox pulling out the 2-1 extra-inning victory. Tonight I'm playing the Sox straight, as I like them to continue to streak, while the Phils continue to struggle.

The Red Sox are the best team in baseball, and the Phillies are easily top three in the National League, despite failing to break out of a mini-slump they've endured lately. Philly has lost four in a row.

The Red Sox head into tonight's game with a six-game lead over the Yankees in the American League East. Boston's offense has compiled a .269 batting average as a team this season, led by Mookie Betts, who is hitting a filthy .339.

I'm looking for more offense than we saw last night, led by Betts and J.D. MartÃ*nez, who leads the Red Sox with 125 hits on the season. Martinez is batting .322 on the year, while Jackie Bradley Jr. has reached base 12 times in his past 10 games for Red Sox.

Take the Crimson Hose here.

Tuesday comp play is the Angels over the Rays.

Things have cooled off a little for the Tampa Bay Rays, as they enter the start of this series having dropped 3 straight. Not only have they lost those 3 straight, but they have been outscored 37-12 during their current slide.

As for the Angels, they have strung together wins in 4 of their last 5, and they have done so by posting some big offense. Los Angeles has pushed across 43 runs in those 5 games.

Tyler Skaggs continues to pitch quality baseball, as the All-Star hurler is on a 5-2 run his last 8 starts, with a 1.44 ERA.

Ryne Stanek makes the "bullpen" start again for Kevin Cash's club, and is expected to go just the first 2 innings of this series opener.

Willing to lay the road wood with Skaggs to stay in the zone.

Angels the comp play this Tuesday night.

On to my complimentary winner...

My free play for Tuesday is on the Atlanta Braves Run Line, over the Miami Marlins.

IMPORTANT: As you know every single Run Line play and Total wager will automatically list the scheduled starting pitchers at the time of the wager. Now, here is the thing with this game, I am not concerned with who is pitching for the Miami Marlins, but I do want you to double-check your ticket and be sure it includes Atlanta starter Kolby Allard. That said, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to be sure you have action even if Miami's starter is scratched, by betting the game over again in the event that takes place. If Allard doesn't go - this is a no-play.

Atlanta's young left-hander gets the nod to make his MLB debut, allowing for an additional day of rest to other Braves starters. The 20-year-old had the fifth-most strikeouts in Double-A in 2017, and arrives at SunTrust Park thriving on a three-pitch mix with quality command of his fastball.

The organization's top prospect is 6-4 this season in Gwinnett, with a 2.80 ERA and 1.21 WHIP over 18 starts. The crafty southpaw has struck out 87 and walked just 33 over 109.1 innings, getting hit at a rather impressive .249 clip. He’s shown some durability, too, throwing at least 90 pitches in each of his last six starts.

I'll side with the kid here.

5* BRAVES RUN LINE (With Allard only)

1* Free Pick on Texas Rangers +165
The Rangers followed up their 3-game weekend sweep of the Astros in Houston by taking game 1 over Arizona 9-5 on Monday for their 4th straight win. I see no reason why Texas can't add to their winning streak on Tuesday and we couldn't be getting a much better price.
Arizona might be the better team and do have the advantage of playing at home, but I simply don't trust Diamondbacks starter Zack Godley against the red-hot bats of the Rangers. Godley has a solid 11-6 record, but owns a mere 4.77 ERA and 1.530 WHIP in 21 starts.
Texas is averaging 7.4 runs/game over their last 7 and are hitting .281 as a team during this stretch. They put up 22 runs in their 3-game series against the Astros against three of their better starters in Keuchel, Verlander and McCullers.
After the loss on Monday, Arizona is now a mere 2-8 in their last 10 home games vs a team with a losing road record and 1-4 in their last 5 interleague games. Rangers are 5-1 in their last 6 interleague games and 21-7 in their last 28 interleague games vs a team with a winning record. Take Texas!

Jack’s Free Pick Tuesday: Indians/Twins UNDER 8.5
Two of the best starters in the AL Central go at it tonight when the Minnesota Twins host the Cleveland Indians for Game 2 of this series Tuesday. I find it very difficult for these teams to combine for 9 or more runs with Trevor Bauer and Kyle Gibson on the mound.
Bauer has been lights out all season. He is 9-6 with a 2.38 ERA and 1.120 WHIP in 22 starts with 192 K’s in 147 1/3 innings. He struck out 11 Twins in 5 2/3 innings in his only start against them this season back on June 2nd.
Gibson is 5-7 with a 3.42 ERA and 1.209 WHIP in 21 starts with 126 K’s in 129 innings. Gison is also 1-0 with a 2.13 ERA in two starts against the Indians this season, giving up just 3 earned runs in 12 2/3 innings.
Bauer is 14-2 UNDER in road games vs. AL teams slugging .400 or worse over the last three seasons. Bauer is 9-1 UNDER when the total is 8 to 8.5 over the last two years. The UNDER is 39-9-6 in Bauer’s last 54 road starts. The UNDER is 5-1 in Bauer’s last six starts against the Twins. The UNDER is 21-10 in the last 31 meetings. Bet the UNDER in this game Tuesday.

For those who don't know, James Shields is a signal that homeruns that are coming. Shields has led the MLB in HR surrendered twice and has allowed a total of 345 in his 13 year career. Only CC Sabathia and Bartolo Colon have surrendered more homreuns than Shields, among active pitchers. On the other side of the equation, Danny Duffy is not much better. In fact, Duffy is averaging 1.4 homeruns surrendered per game this season. Duffy is tied for 9th most homeruns surrendered this season, only 6 behind MLB leader Dylan Bundy. In addition to both pitchers surrendering a lot of homeruns, their 4.70 and 4.53 ERA will surely add to lots of runs as well. Look for the offensive fireworks tonight as this game goes over the total.

The Cardinals will enter tonight with confidence and momentum after overcoming a 4-0 deficit last night to eventually win in extra innings 5-4 over Colorado. Jack Flaherty has shown very good form in his last 3 starts for St. Louis while posting a stellar 2.40 ERA and 1.13 WHIP. Scott "The Bulldog" Rickenbach MLB Game #979 Tuesday Free Pick Texas Rangers Money Line (+) @ Arizona Diamondbacks @ 9:40 ET - The Rangers Bartolo Colon has struggled some of late but he has been surprisingly impressive on the road this season and he is still hungry to notch one more MLB victory. The 45-year old right-hander has 245 career wins which has him tied with Dennis Martinez for the most ever career wins from a Latin-American born pitcher. This looks like a great spot for him to finally break the record. Colon won his most recent start versus the Diamondbacks last season. Though he went 0-1-1 in his 2 prior starts versus Arizona he compiled a 2.45 ERA in those two outings. This season Colon has a solid 1.18 WHIP in his 10 road starts. Believe it or not, 8 of Colon's 10 road starts this season have been quality starts. That is, he went 6 or more innings while allowing 3 earned runs or less. As for the Diamondbacks Zack Godley, he actually has a 6.60 ERA in his 3 home starts in the month of July. Also, the Dbacks are a pricey favorite here considering they are only 9-9 their last 18 games. Texas had been struggling too but they've now won 4 straight games and Colon wants this one! It is a perfect set up for him in terms of run support as the Rangers have averaged 7.4 runs per game their last 7 games! Free Pick TEXAS

This NL Central rivalry has the Cubs with a slight edge this season, winning 5 of the 9 meetings in 2018. Owners of the best record in the National League (61-44), Chicago has a 1.5 game lead over Milwaukee in the Central Division, with Pittsburgh sitting in 3rd place, 7.0 GB. The 34-year old is on pace to have one of his best campaigns ever and has proven to be getting better with age, as he has gone into the 7th inning 5 times and has thrown over 100 pitches on 10 occasions this season. Overall, the team is 17-4 in his 21 starts. James Taillon gets the nod at home. The RH is 7-8 with a 3.73 ERA on the year. The 26-year old has pitched well on the campaign but owns a 2-3 mark, with a 5.06 ERA in 5 career starts against the Cubs. The problem this season is run support. The Pirates have a mediocre offense, ranking 14th in scoring (4.52 RPG). When playing at PNC Park, Pittsburgh accounts for just, 4.42 RPG, while Chicago averages over 4.92 RPG as a visitor. Head-2-Head, the Cubs are 4-1 the L5 games played at the Pirates and 4-0 in Lester's L4 starts vs. the Pirates. Take Chicago. Thank you.

MLB | Angels vs Rays
Play on: Angels -125 at GTBets

My free play is on the LA Angels at 7:10 ET. The 53-53 Tampa Bay Rays host the opener of a three-game series against the 54-53 Los Angeles Angels Tuesday night. Neither team is really a playoff contender as the Angels sit 9 1/2 games out of the second AL wild card spot, while the Rays are 10 back. Tampa Bay comes off an awful weekend, as after beating the Orioles 4-3 last Thursday, the Rays lost Friday, Saturday and Sunday while getting outscored 37-12 (note: Baltimore owns MLB's worst record at 32-74 plus its worst moneyline mark at minus-$37228). in contrast, LA's offense scored 38 runs during the team's four-game winning streak, before allowing seven first-inning runs on Sunday en route to dropping an 8-5 setback to Seattle.
Lefty Tyler Skaggs (8-6, 2.62 ERA) will get the start for LA. He enters on a roll, as he improved to 5-2 with a 1.44 ERA in his last eight outings last Wednesday (Angels are 6-2), after allowing one ER on four hits over six innings of an 11-3 win over the Chicago White Sox. Skaggs pitched well against the Rays back on May 17, taking a shutout into the sixth inning and giving up just one run and six hits while striking out seven. For his career, he's 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA against the Rays, with his other outing in 2014. Tampa Bay will turn to reliever-turned-"opener" Ryne Stanek (1-3, 2.43 ERA). He is 0-2 with a 2.38 ERA in 15 starts this season, with the Rays going 6-9, minus-$252 vs the moneyline in those 'starts!' Stanek comes in off a rare bad outing, giving up three runs on two HRs in two innings Saturday against the Orioles. After all, Stanek had allowed just three runs in his previous 23 appearances, going back to the beginning of June. However, he saw his ERA balloon from 1.86 to 2.43 in that one appearance.
Tampa Bay has pushed through trade after trade, as the offseason saw Evan Longoria, Corey Dickerson, Jake Odorizzi and Steven Souza all dealt away. Then, closer Jesus Colome and outfielder Denard Span were dealt early this season. However, despite all of that turnover and key injuries, the Rays were three games above .500 before the Orioles took the final three of a four-game series over the weekend. Now, Tampa Bay is expected to continue to sell off some of its key assets in advance of Tuesday's trade deadline, potentially including top starter Chris Archer. The Rays traded away three pitchers in three days last week, dealing away starter Nathan Eovaldi to the Boston Red Sox, reliever Matt Andriese to the Arizona Diamondbacks and reliever Jonny Venters to the Atlanta Braves. Too much uncertainty surrounding the Rays to NOT take the Angels in this one, especially with Skaggs pitching so well (1.44 ERA over his last eight starts / team is 6-2).
Good luck...Larry

1 Unit FREE PLAY on Philadelphia Phillies +141
I’ll take a shot with the Phillies today as big road underdogs to the Boston Red Sox. The Phillies have the better starter on the mound in Jake Arrieta, who is 8-6 with a 3.45 ERA in 20 starts this season. He is also 2-0 with a 3.31 ERA in his last three starts. Drew Pomeranz has been terrible for the Red Sox this year. He is 1-4 with a 6.91 ERA and 1.82 WHIP in nine starts, including 1-2 with a 7.86 ERA and 2.02 WHIP in four home starts. He has already allowed 9 homers, 23 walks and 53 hits in 41 2/3 innings this year. The Phillies are 8-1 when revenging a one-run loss against an opponent this season. Look for them to bounce back after losing in extras to the Red Sox last night. Give me the Phillies.

MLB | HOU vs SEA
Play on: UNDER 8 +102

10* FREE MLB PICK (Under 8)
We cashed in on the UNDER 7 in Seattle's 2-0 win over the Astros on Monday and I'll gladly take my chances with the UNDER 8 in game 2 on Tuesday. As I mentioned in yesterday's write-up, Houston's offense is really missing their two stars in Altuve and Correa. In the Astros last 7 games they are hitting a mere .186 as a team and have averaged just 3.3 runs/game during this stretch. They haven't exactly faced the toughest starters during their slump, which is why I'm confident that Seattle's Mike Leake can keep them in check. At the same time, I don't see the Mariners putting up a big number here. Houston is sending out Charlie Morton, who is 11-2 with a 2.89 ERA in 20 starts. He's also got a strong 2.93 ERA in 5 career starts against Seattle. Give me the UNDER 8!

DMack's Free Play for Tuesday, July 31, 2018 is on the Chicago Cubs (Lester Listed)
Not real concerned about Lester's recent numbers as they are skewed by on horrific start against the Cardinals two back. He's been the Blue Bears best starter all year and rocks 12-3 3.06 numbers for the year and one-hit the Bucs for 7 innings the last time he faced them on June 9th. Jameson Taillon (2-3, 5.60, 5 starts LT) has never been a mystery to the Cubs. Take the roadie in this pick 'em affair.

MLB | Brewers vs Dodgers
Play on: Brewers +165 at YouWager

1* Free Sharp Play on Brewers +165
My money is on Milwaukee to cash in as a big road dog against the Dodgers on Tuesday. The Brewers won the series opener 5-2 on Monday, improving to 6-2 over their last 8 games. A stretch in which they have scored 5 or more runs 6 times. I like the chances here of the offense staying hot against Los Angeles starter Walker Buehler, who has allowed 7 runs on 11 hits (4 HRs) in 9 2/3 innings in his first two starts back from a DL stint that coast him more than a month of action. On the flip side of this, the Brewers will send out Wade Miley, who has a 2.25 ERA in his 3 starts since returning to the team on 7/12. Miley has also enjoyed a ton of success pitching at Dodgers stadium, as he is 3-0 with a 2.41 ERA in 6 career starts as the visitor. Bet the Brewers +165!

MIT Simulator Tuesday MLB Free Pick: UNDER 9 in Washington - The Mets O/U is 6-10 when playing with a day off and Mets O/U also 14-23 in divisional games this season. In games against teams with a losing record this season, New York is 13-20. The Nationals O/U is 10-23 this season in games with an O/U of 8 or 8.5 runs. Washington is off of a shutout loss and the Nats O/U is 3-7 this season when off of a shutout loss. Mets Matz is off of a strong start at Pittsburgh and has a 3.35 ERA this season on the road. Washington's Roark is off of a strong start at Milwaukee as he got back on track. Roark is 7-3 with a 3.20 ERA in his dozen career starts against the Mets. Matz has a 2.64 ERA in his 7 career starts versus the Nationals. Considering all of the above it is easy to see why MIT Simulator is forecasting that this one stays UNDER

I am still not buying into Masahiro Tanaka deserves to be this kind of favorite versus any team. He is off a complete game and did receive some extra rest but is he really 100% this guy has been injury prone for awhile now and the Orioles have had some sort of rebirth since trading Machado away. Yefry Ramirez would like nothing more then to get revenge on his former team and he has been solid for the most part this season 1-3 with a 3.49 ERA. I think you will see extra effort from him and the Orioles tonight and I just can not pass this kind of plus money. Invest 9 units on the Orioles rotation #963

Red Sox over Phillies- I'm still kicking myself in the butt for not posting Boston as my 'Best' last night but those decisions haunt you if you let it. Listen, the Phillies are an exciting team but these Red Sox don't care who they are playing. Jake Arrieta (8-6, 3.45 ERA) is just 1-4 with a 5.27 ERA lifetime against Boston. Take the RED SOX!

This game features the 46-62 Marlins at the 56-47 Braves. We got an easy win last night with the Braves who are super motivated knowing the Phillies are taking on the Boston Red Sox if the Phillies lose tonight and the Braves win the Braves will be in first place. This line is high for a reason Kolby Allard is know scrap heap pitcher like Dan Straily is this guy is the #10 left handed pitcher prospect in all of baseball. He is just 20 years old and is 6-4 with a 2.80 ERA in triple A. 87 strike outs over 109.1 innings. Line is high but we should have no problem here take the Braves for a 15* winner.
