4-Unit Play: Take 903 Cubs +100 over Nats (7:05 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 6)




I'm backing the Cubs on Thursday with Hendricks over Strasburg. Chicago got a much-needed win to salvage the third game of its series with Milwaukee, which would have been only two games out of first place otherwise. Washington fell behind 7-0 to St. Louis before losing 7-6 on Wednesday night and it put the Nationals closer to being totally out of the playoff picture and it was their fifth loss in their last seven games. The Cubs have won 11 of their last 15 and they have won six of Kyle Hendricks' last seven starts. Hendricks has allowed a total of only three runs with no homers his last 20 innings in three starts. The right-hander is 5-2 with a 3.48 ERA since the All-Star break and in one start against the Nationals this year, Hendricks gave up two runs in six innings and the Cubs are 6-2 his last eight starts versus Washington. Stephen Strasburg has pitched better on the road than at home where he is 2-5 with a 5.40 ERA. Strasburg has a 6.53 ERA and .305 opponent batting average the second half of the season. For Thursday, Raise The Bar 1500♦ is the Atlanta Falcons over the Philadelphia Eagles. At 8:30 am eastern time, the Falcons are +1 in most areas in Vegas and offshore.


Update: at 2:15 pm eastern time, the line is now a pick.


Line value has been lost on this for Atlanta backers, as the Falcons opened around a +4 underdog, and as I type my analysis, they are down near a pick to +1 point pup.


I am sure the main reason the price dropped is because it was installed at the time when it looked like Carson Wentz was going to be the starting quarterback for this opening night affair, but Wentz has not yet been cleared for contact, so it will be Nick Foles. We all know how Foles delivered the Eagles to the promised land last February in helping Philly hoist their first Lombardi Trophy ever, and only a fool would doubt he won't deliver again when called upon this season.


I am no fool, but I did watch the Eagles this preseason, and I did not see the same Foles that I saw last season. Teams are now wise to the Philly run/pass option that they had much success with last year. Atlanta will be wise to it. Heck, they held the high-scoring Eagles offense to just 15 points in that bitter 15-10 loss last January in the divisional round, as the Eagles defense was able to hold back Matt Ryan's pass into the end zone in the final minute of play from the red-zone.


Defending Super Bowl champions have opened the following season 13 times at home, and have gone an eye-popping 11-2 straight up in those 13 season openers. One of the losses was back in 2012 when Dallas was able to win at the New York Giants, while the other loss happened just last season when Kansas City used a monster second half to comeback for the outright win at New England.


Atlanta had a pretty dreadful preseason as well, but they also did not use their main offensive cogs in Julio Jones, Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman. They have added Calvin Ridley to Matt Ryan's arsenal, and as this is a bit of a "homecoming" for Matty Ice who played his high school football out of Philly, I am going to look for the revenge angle to be a strong play angle tonight, and for the Falcons to spring the minor upset.

I feel like the defending champs are in a little bit of trouble out of the gate. And this spot sets up well for the Falcons. The Eagles have seen the usual amount of post-Super Bowl roster turnover and are missing some key guys from last year. They are also still without Carson Wentz. I like Nick Foles. He could be a starter for a dozen teams in the NFL. But he's been banged up this preseason and he's looked pretty bad when he's been out there. Let's be honest: he caught lightning in a bottle late last year and rode that to a title. But that momentum isn't going to carry over here. The Falcons have revenge after a tight loss in the playoffs last season. And the Eagles may be distracted by all the Super Bowl champion hoopla tonight. I think the Falcons come to play and I like them to get this win.

The O/U is 0-7 for the Falcons in their last 7 games against a conference opponent and the O/U is 6-12 for the Eagles in their last 18 home games. The Eagles will have to step up defensively if they want a shot at winning this game with all of the injuries they have offensively. You can also expect the Eagles to work the clock with their ground game in this home opener tonight with a healthy Ajayi in the backfield who practiced fully this week. The Eagles allowed just 12.4 ppg at home last season and just 5 ppg in the first half on their home games last season, while the Falcons allowed just 12.7 ppg over their last 3 games last season. Play the UNDER.

The Falcons were one Julio Jones jumpball away from taking out the eventual Super Bowl Champions last year in the playoffs. Atlanta is the same team only more potent offensively this year so this game could spell trouble for the Eagles. Philly is nursing a hang over the size of the Liberty Bell after they won their first title ever last year and with Nick Foles starting game one (Wentz is still out) they are at a major disadvantage in this one. They still have weapons, although Alshon Jeffery is out, and will be able to move the ball at times but the Foles magic will be tested with a fast and hungry Atlanta defense. Its is always great when football is back but the Eagles may need a few weeks for the dust to settle before they know if they can repeat. Take the Points but Atlanta has a chance to take this one outright.
