1-Unit Play. Take #480 N.Y. Jets (+6.5) over Detroit (7 p.m., Monday, Sept. 10)

I don't love betting on a rookie quarterback making his first career start on the road. That's why this play is rated so low. However, everything else here points towards the Jets. I think that Matt Patricia is a joke. He doesn't look like he has the faintest clue what he's doing with this Lions team and he's trying to completely rebuild a group that really had been holding its own the last few years. The Lions defense is a mess and the offense isn't getting any younger. They were the worst team that I watched this preseason and their first team offense and defense combined to get outscored 40-16. This Jets team really impressed me with the way it overachieved last season. And I think that they are a young team with some upside. If Darnold clicks they could be in business. But this play is really mainly about betting against Patricia, and that's something you can expect often this year.


1-Unit Play. Take #482 Oakland (+4) over L.A. Rams (10 p.m., Monday, Sept. 10)

Let's pump the brakes on the Rams a little bit. This team ?won the offseason?. But how often does winning the offseason translate into winning during the regular season? Not often. Do you know how many teams with a winning record the Rams beat last year? Three. Playoff teams? Two, and one was the Jaguars. I think the Rams are overvalued coming into the season. That's not to say they aren't good. They are. They are going to win their division. But this team is no juggernaut. I don't like that they didn't play any of their starters this preseason and they could be a little rusty. I don't love the Jon Gruden situation in Oakland. And this Raiders franchise has some serious issues to deal with over the next two seasons. But the fans haven't fully turned on them yet. And they will still have a home field advantage in this one. Gruden has packed his rosters with veterans and instilled a tough mindset. I think they are going to pound away at the Rams and they won't back down in this matchup. Oakland could definitely win this game and I think the value is on the home dog.

5-Unit Play. Take #479 NY Jets +6.5 over Detroit (Monday, September 10th at 7:10 PM ET)

Take the NY Jets ATS as my 5-Unit NFL Smash for Monday night. This pick falls into one of my top NFL systems and I would not be shocked to see the Jets win this game outright Monday night. The Jets are a much-improved team on both sides of the ball coming into this season and they are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 games when playing on an artificial surface. The Jets allowed 25.7 ppg on the road last season, however this is a much better team defensively coming into this season. Darnold has plenty of weapons to utilize and if he can limit turnovers he will have success against this Lions defense that gave up 23.5 ppg last season. Opponents passed for 64.3% against this Lions defense last season and just 59% against the Jets defense. Play the NY Jets ATS.

4-Unit Play: Take 482 Raiders +4 over Rams (10:20 p.m., Monday, Sept. 10)

I'm grabbing the points with the Oakland Raiders on Monday night. We certainly respect what the Rams did last season, while Oakland, one of the most heavily bet teams early last season disappointed. But those results give us value on Monday. While many Raider fans are upset with Khalil Mack's departure, we believe the Raiders have to be happy to at least move on from the distraction. Besides, very few defensive players are worth as much as people think and we believe Mack, as good as he is, is replaceable. We like the talent up front on offense for the Raiders, they need however, to reach their potential and Jon Gruden's staff can help that cause. Derek Carr has gone from a media darling of a year ago, to drawing very little mention as we kickoff the new season. All the attention is on the Rams. The Raiders have covered six of their last eight September games and they fall under the system where teams that didn't make the playoffs the previous season are 57-33 ATS in week-one against teams that did make the playoffs. The teams off a postseason appearance are usually a tad overvalued in week-one for public consumption and we feel this one is a great example. I'm grabbing the points with the Raiders on Monday.

7-Unit Play. Take #479 N.Y. Jets (+6.5) over Detroit (7 p.m., Monday, September 10)

There is new hope for Jets fans and it comes in rookie signal caller Sam Darnold. The new quarterback is ready to take over a desperate franchise that went 5-11 last year and has been ugly in the past few years. New York is in a great spot to get off to a good start with a lot of guys returning from last year and playing a team that is not really sure who they are in Detroit. The Lions have a new head coach and a few new players in the backfield to try and bolster the leagues worst rushing attack so it remains to be seen what they are going to be this season. Matt Stafford is a solid quarterback and he can win games by himself at times but he will turn the ball over and make hasty decisions as well. This is a game the Jets can win and Darnold is as poised as any rookie we have seen in a while so take the points but don't be shocked if Sammy and the defense has them in it until the end with a chance to get a win.

For Monday, Top-Rated 1000♦ is the Detroit Lions as the home favorite over the N.Y. Jets. At 9:00 am eastern time, the Lions are -7 points in Vegas and offshore. If you line is -7 or -7 1/2, I advise buying down the half-point on Detroit.


The Jets have found their franchise quarterback, as they will give the starter to USC rookie Sam Darnold, and while hopes are high for New York fans, it is going to take a while before Darnold can lead this team back to glory, There are simply too many holes in the Jets' ship right now for Darnold to plug. Namely, an offensive line that did not do a very good job protecting the QB last season.


With little time to pass the football, expect Darnold to be putting up some high-risk passes against a Detroit secondary that recorded 17 picks a season ago. New coach Matt Patricia is a defense-first coach that is quite familiar with this opponent from his scheming days in New England.


One of my general rules of thumb in the NFL is to start with who is the better quarterback? Right now, the reply is hands-down Lions QB Matt Stafford who now has a pair of RB's in Johnson and Blount that will keep the Jets defense honest this Monday night.


Detroit covered 3 of their 4 tries last season as the home chalk, while New York went just 1-4-1 against the spread last season as the road dog.


Should be a good night to be a fan in the stands at Ford Field, as the Lions take it to the Jets in Matt Patrcia's head coaching debut.
