Ball State Cardinals vs. Toledo Rockets Preview and Predictions 10-31-2018 in NCAAF

NCAAF Previews 30th October 2018 By Charles Jay for Scores And Stats
by Charles Jay Scores & Stats on 10/30/2018

The Ball State Cardinals lost twice last time out. They not only got beaten 52-14 by Ohio, but they lost their starting quarterback as well. So now they will have to engage with one of the more explosive teams in the Mid-American Conference with a much less experienced signal-caller.

And the Toledo Rockets, who were coming off a dreadful second half in their loss to Buffalo, really found themselves on the offensive side of the ball in their last outing, although they also have some questions to answer at the quarterback spot.

Toledo will most likely be going to some kind of bowl game when all is said and done. But Ball State will have to win all three of its remaining games to be eligible.

These teams meet up at the Glass Bowl on Wednesday night on ESPN2.

TV: ESPN2, 7:30 PM ET. LINE: Toledo -18

ABOUT BALL STATE: It was thoroughly disappointing to the Cardinals (3-6 SU, 4-5 ATS) to have lost 52-14 to the Ohio Bobcats last time out, giving up 31 points in the second quarter, along with 411 yards rushing and 30 first downs. But on top of that, they lost quarterback Riley Neal, who tore a meniscus and won't be available this week. Neal actually played through the injury for a little while, but when coach Mike Neu noticed that he wasn't able to move laterally all that well, he took him out of the game and replaced them with Drew Plitt. Neal has thrown for 1917 yards and 11 touchdowns, completing 58%. Plitt has completed 18 of 29 for 235 yards in limited action. He also played some last season, including three starts, and was a 50% passer. Backups got plenty of time last year because Neal missed nine games with a knee injury. Ball State might be missing other personnel as well. Running back James Gilbert (586 yards, 4.4 yards per carry) has a back injury that has caused him to miss practice. He was first-team All-MAC back in 2016 and sat out with a medical redshirt last year. Also, Jacob White, middle linebacker and the team's leading tackler, is hobbled by an ankle injury. Neal's absence also affects the running game, as he has run for 357 yards. And BSU has had a very hard time stopping opponents on the ground, giving up 4.8 yards per rushing attempt. They are fifth in the nation first downs, but are 122nd in the nation when it comes to yards per point. They will have to win each of their remaining games – against Toledo, Western Michigan and Miami of Ohio – to become bowl-eligible.

ABOUT TOLEDO: They were completely flummoxed by Buffalo a couple of games ago, giving up 24 unanswered points in the second half while going limp on offense, but the Rockets (4-4 SU, 3-5 ATS) came through huge against Western Michigan last week. Of course, it didn't hurt them that Jon Wassink, the WMU quarterback, got injured on the opening drive and had to leave the game. But still, they cut through the Broncos' defense like a swath, rolling up 515 yards in a 51-24 romp. Their starting quarterback, Mitch Guadagni, had to leave the game with a shoulder injury, after producing 190 yards of total offense. He's 13th in the nation in Passing Efficiency, so that loss is usually felt. Eli Peters, the Illinois transfer, threw three touchdown passes. But he's only a 47% passer on the season. Cody Thompson had three touchdowns, and he currently ranks in the nation's top 10 with nine receiving TDs. Toledo is 12th the nation in scoring at 40.8 points per game. They have three players who have rushed for more than 400 yards; Guadagni is one of them, but there are two running backs – Brian Koback and Shakif Seymour. They only have two receivers with over 400 yards. But Diontae Johnson is seventh in the nation in kickoff returns. Peters and Guadagni have combined to throw 22 touchdowns with only five interceptions. Toledo's average field position for the offense is the 34-yard line, which is seventh best in the country. And 78.3% of their first downs have been achieved on either a first or second down.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Ball State is 127th in the country in the advanced metric of "IsoPPP," which measures explosiveness, according to the people at analytics site Football Outsiders. Meanwhile, Toledo is a very solid 22nd in that same category.

2. Toledo's backup tight end Reggie Gilliam, a sophomore, currently leads the nation in blocked kicks with four.

3. Toledo has been to four different bowl games the last four seasons - the GoDaddy, Boca Raton, Camellia and Dollar General Bowls. Their stadium was also the site of the Glass Bowl game, a post-season contest from 1946-49 in which the Rockets participated all four years.

PREDICTION: Toledo 43, Ball State 20

Chicago Blackhawks vs. Vancouver Canucks Preview and Predictions 10-31-2018 in NHL

NHL Previews 30th October 2018 by Gracenote
Blackhawks vs. Canucks Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 10/30/2018

Elias Pettersson has established himself as an extremely early favorite for the Calder Trophy with the season's first month coming to a close, and for good reason. With an NHL rookie-best total in goals (seven) and points (10) despite missing six games due to a concussion, Pettersson aims to continue his torrid streak on Wednesday as the Vancouver Canucks host the Chicago Blackhawks.

Pettersson, who is the 21st player in NHL history to score at least seven goals in his first seven contests, tallied in both the second and third period of Monday's 5-2 win over Minnesota. "He's got a really good mind for the game, his details are sharp," Canucks coach Travis Green told reporters of the 19-year-old Swede, who was the fifth overall pick of the 2017 NHL Draft. While Vancouver snapped a two-game skid to improve to 1-1-0 on its four-game homestand, Chicago has dropped a pair of contests heading into the opener of a three-game trek through the Pacific Northwest. Patrick Kane extended his point streak to six games for the Blackhawks with an assist on defenseman Brent Seabrook's 5-on-3 goal in the first period of Sunday's 2-1 overtime loss against Edmonton.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, NHL Network, WGN (Chicago), Sportsnet, Sportsnet One, Sportsnet360 (Vancouver)

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (6-3-3): Corey Crawford allowed one goal in three successive starts before getting gashed for six on Saturday in a 7-3 setback at St. Louis. The two-time Stanley Cup winner missed all three contests versus Vancouver last season due to a concussion which had effects that lingered for nearly 10 months, and he is not interested in talking about that anymore. "Is there a point?" Crawford asked Tuesday, via the Chicago Sun-Times. "It's done. It's over. It's almost a year ago. It's way, way past now, and I don't really care, to be honest."

ABOUT THE CANUCKS (7-6-0): Forward Brandon Sutter is expected to miss four-to-six weeks with a separated shoulder sustained during the second period of Monday's game versus the Wild. While Green elected against getting into specifics and said that Sutter's recovery time would not be days but "more like weeks," Vancouver recalled forwards Darren Archibald and Brendan Gaunce from Utica of the American Hockey League. Archibald scored a goal in Thursday's tilt versus Arizona in his lone Canucks appearance this season and is expected to contribute on the penalty kill.

OVERTIME

1. Chicago C Marcus Kruger (team-leading 14 penalty minutes) did not skate with any of the four lines during Tuesday's practice and is likely to be a scratch versus Vancouver.

2. The Canucks outscored the Blackhawks 14-6 en route to winning all three games last season.

3. Kane, who has collected six goals and four assists during his point streak, has failed to dent the scoresheet on just one occasion in 12 games this season.

PREDICTION: Canucks 4, Blackhawks 2

Utah Jazz vs. Minnesota Timberwolves Preview and Predictions 10-31-2018 in NBA

NBA Previews 30th October 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 10/30/2018

Jimmy Butler remains intent on leaving the Minnesota Timberwolves but his ability to put up strong performances may again be needed during Wednesday's home contest against the Utah Jazz. Butler scored 32 points for his second 30-point outing of the campaign when Minnesota notched a 124-120 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday.

Butler is averaging 22.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.0 steals despite his trade request drama overshadowing the team's play. "It's basketball," Butler told reporters. "I don't think nothing that has gone on before this game has anything to do with us going out there and competing. We all go out there and play together, play to win - with or without what is going on." Utah is looking to complete a sweep of a four-game road trip - it won the first three by an average of 13.7 points - and is thriving behind a balanced attack in which seven players are averaging more than nine points per game. "We're not about our starters, we are not about our bench and we are not about any one player," Jazz coach Quin Snyder told reporters.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, A&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain (Utah), FS North (Minnesota)

ABOUT THE JAZZ (4-2): Center Rudy Gobert has opened the season with six straight double-doubles and is averaging 17.7 points, 13.5 rebounds and 2.7 blocked shots. "I want to show that I'm not only a defensive star," Gobert told reporters about the rise in his offensive game. "I can be a star offensively, too." Shooting guard Donovan Mitchell is the team's star and he is averaging 22.8 points and has reached at least 20 points in three straight games and four times overall.

ABOUT THE TIMBERWOLVES (3-4): Center Karl-Anthony Towns notched his second double-double of the campaign by recording 25 points and 16 rebounds against Lakers. Towns, who led the NBA with 68 double-doubles last season, got off to a slow start this season and scored 17 or fewer points in five of Minnesota's first six games. Small forward Andrew Wiggins (quadriceps) could miss his fourth straight game and his absence would again be at least partially plugged by rookie Josh Okogie, who scored a season-best 17 points against Los Angeles.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The teams split four meetings last season.

2. Utah PF Derrick Favors (knee) is expected to return after a one-game absence, while SF Jae Crowder (ankle) is probable after injuring an ankle in Sunday's 113-104 win over the Dallas Mavericks.

3. Minnesota PG Jeff Teague is 4-of-22 shooting over the past two games, missing all nine 3-point attempts.

PREDICTION: Jazz 108, Timberwolves 104

Nuggets vs. Bulls Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 10/30/2018

The Chicago Bulls followed up their best defensive game of the young season with one of the worst defensive performances in franchise history. The Bulls will try to settle into some consistency at that end of the floor when they host the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday.

Chicago earned a 97-85 win at Atlanta on Saturday that marked a season low for points allowed but was shredded 149-124 at home by the Golden State Warriors on Monday - the most points allowed in a home game in franchise history. "It's unacceptable to start the game like that, especially against the defending champs," Bulls guard Zach LaVine told reporters after watching the Warriors open a 92-50 lead at the half. "We have to have better energy, better toughness. We just didn't have it. It's on us. They played the way they were supposed to." Denver's offense isn't quite as explosive as Golden State's, but it is plenty capable of putting up some big numbers. The Nuggets, who handed the Warriors their only loss so far this season, bounced back from their first setback by knocking off the New Orleans Pelicans 116-111 on Monday.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, Altitude (Denver), NBCS Chicago

ABOUT THE NUGGETS (5-1): Guards Gary Harris and Jamal Murray combined for 46 points and seven steals in Monday's win, and Harris believes this Denver squad is destined for more than the team that just missed out on the playoffs last season. "We have a lot of energy right now," Harris told reporters. "The vibe around the team is different this year, especially playing last year ... I think y'all can feel it, we can feel it, everybody can feel it. It's just a different vibe around the team." The Nuggets are built around center Nikola Jokic, who scored a season-low 12 points on Monday but came up just shy of a triple-double with 10 assists and nine rebounds.

ABOUT THE BULLS (2-5): Chicago allowed Warriors guard Klay Thompson to set an NBA record with 14 made 3-pointers in the rout and watched Golden State shoot 55.2 percent from the floor. "The disappointing thing is the lack of edge we played with to allow them to get comfortable and get confidence and get going," Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg told reporters. "When they hit us in the mouth, we didn't respond well. It's pretty simple: We got our (butt) kicked." The Bulls can find a positive in the play of rookie power forward Wendell Carter Jr., who scored a season-high 18 points in his second straight double-figure outing.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Nuggets PF Trey Lyles scored a season-high 17 points off the bench on Monday - his third straight game scoring in double figures.

2. LaVine scored 21 points on Monday and either led or tied for the team lead in scoring in each of the first seven games.

3. Denver took the last five in the series, including a 135-102 triumph at Chicago in the lone visit last season.

PREDICTION: Nuggets 111, Bulls 110

Indiana Pacers vs. New York Knicks Preview and Predictions 10-31-2018 in NBA

Pacers vs. Knicks Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 10/30/2018

The Indiana Pacers are trying to build some consistency on offense and stumbled at home in a loss to the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday. The Pacers will try to bounce back and move the ball more when they begin a two-game trip by visiting the New York Knicks on Wednesday.

Indiana averaged 117.5 points in wins at San Antonio and Cleveland last week but was held to 41.1 percent shooting in a 103-93 home loss to the Trail Blazers. "You're playing against a really good defensive team and they're making you move with their actions," Pacers point guard Darren Collison told reporters. "We're getting there, we're starting to become a really good offensive team and (coach) Nate (McMillan) has done a good job telling us to continue to move the ball. We just missed some easy shots, sometimes nights are going to be like that and it just wasn't our night." The Knicks are trying to build a winning culture with a young team and snapped a five-game slide with a 115-96 win over the Brooklyn Nets on Monday. "Just to keep your guys encouraged that's what they're doing, there's some fruits to that labor -- you want them to feel that joy of victory," New York coach David Fizdale told reporters. "For me, it's just relief. But you want them to see that all the hard work they're putting in is turning into something for them. We understand that this league is going to be unforgiving to us, but we want to try to get every win we can."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN, FS Indiana, MSG (New York)

ABOUT THE PACERS (4-3): All-Star guard Victor Oladipo collected 21 points, nine rebounds and seven assists on Monday but was 9-of-24 from the floor after going a combined 17-of-27 at San Antonio and Cleveland. "We just missed shots," Oladipo told reporters. "Even our open looks, we missed them. Just a tough night offensively." The exception to that rule was Collison, who went 8-of-14 from the floor en route to a season-high 17 points and is 13-of-22 in the last two contests after shooting 3-of-13 in the previous two games.

ABOUT THE KNICKS (2-5): Shooting guard Tim Hardaway Jr. led the way with 25 points, eight assists and five rebounds on Monday and is impressing his coach with his growth. "I'm proud of him," Fizdale told reporters of Hardaway. "He knows that this year is going to be an up and down year for us, a growing year. But his growth and what he's trying to take to heart is, how do I become a star? How do I become a go-to guy? What's the next step? What is the responsibility for that? That's why I'm really on him about defending. I think you can see he's competing." Hardaway, 26, is averaging 24.4 points after putting up 17.5 in his first season with New York last year.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Pacers PF Domantas Sabonis is 15-of-21 from the field in the last three games.

2. Knicks C Enes Kanter recorded his fifth double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds on Monday.

3. Indiana is looking for its first win at New York since April 3, 2016.

PREDICTION: Pacers 112, Knicks 105

Mavericks vs. Lakers Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 10/30/2018

LeBron James is getting tired of losing games and he hopes the Los Angeles Lakers can begin a turnaround when they host the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday. The James era started with five setbacks in seven games and three of the losses were by four or fewer points.

James had 29 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists in Monday's 124-120 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves but shaky defense and 18 turnovers derailed the Lakers' hopes. "We've got to get better. We know that," James told reporters. "We talk about patience, but we can't have reoccurrence of doing the same things over and over and over again and expecting a different result. That's insanity." The Mavericks are also struggling with four consecutive defeats and they committed a season-worst 23 turnovers in Monday's 113-108 overtime loss to the San Antonio Spurs. "When you go and play against a team like the Lakers, who is a fast breaking team who likes to get out in transition, we can't have 23 turnovers again," forward Harrison Barnes told reporters. "I'm glad the way we competed. It's unfortunate we lost it right at the end."

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, FS Southwest (Dallas), Spectrum SportsNet (Los Angeles)

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (2-5): Rookie forward Luka Doncic was superb in the loss to the Spurs with 31 points on 11-of-18 shooting, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range. The No. 3 overall pick played 40 minutes in the contest and also had eight rebounds and four assists, and the 19-year-old is highly anticipating the game against the Lakers. "I'm going to play against my idol," the native of Slovenia told reporters, speaking of James. "I can't wait for that game."

ABOUT THE LAKERS (2-5): Point guard Lonzo Ball strung together back-to-back lackluster outings in which he averaged five points, two assists and 1.5 rebounds while making 4-of-14 shots. Ball, who is currently starting ahead of veteran Rajon Rondo, said he needs to be more engaged and said he just isn't doing his job, something coach Luke Walton doesn't dispute. "There's different techniques, and we try them all," Walton told reporters. "Whether it's being hard on him, encouraging him, running more plays for him. We see it. It's just something where he's a young point guard and we will continue to monitor and work on with him."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Lakers went 3-1 against the Mavericks last season after Dallas won the previous 14 meetings.

2. Los Angeles SF Brandon Ingram scored a season-best 24 points against Minnesota in his return from a four-game suspension.

3. Dallas backup PG Devin Harris (hamstring) is expected to miss his seventh straight game.

PREDICTION: Lakers 118, Mavericks 112

Spurs vs. Suns Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 10/30/2018

The San Antonio Spurs are coming together as a revamped team as they enter Wednesday's road contest against the Phoenix Suns. The Spurs were fractured last season when the Kawhi Leonard drama sabotaged the squad but feel more camaraderie now that Leonard was dealt to the Toronto Raptors.

Star guard DeMar DeRozan was acquired in the Leonard deal and he poured in 34 points as the Spurs gutted out a 113-108 overtime win over the Dallas Mavericks on Monday. "I think we have a bunch of guys that are competitive and have the same goal, that's to win," power forward LaMarcus Aldridge told reporters. "I feel like that's not something hard to ask. I feel like every guy is trying to do what they can to make wins." Phoenix isn't finding many victories and has lost five straight after falling 117-110 to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday. Star shooting guard Devin Booker (hamstring) is in danger of missing his third straight contest.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, CW35 (San Antonio), FS Arizona (Phoenix)

ABOUT THE SPURS (4-2): DeRozan is averaging 28.3 points and eight assists through six games with his new club and he is already operating as the closer in tight fourth-quarter contests. "He's a really good player and he loves those moments," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich told reporters of DeRozan. "He's not afraid of failure. You know, Michael (Jordan) didn't make every shot at the end of the game, but there are very, very few people who want to be in that position all the time and (DeRozan's) one of those people who loves it. It's good to have that." Small forward Rudy Gay has posted three consecutive double-doubles for the first time in his career.

ABOUT THE SUNS (1-5): Booker, who is averaging 27.8 points, is listed as doubtful due to the injury he suffered on Oct. 24 against the Los Angeles Lakers. Phoenix is losing by an average of 18.8 points during the five-game skid and has allowed at least 117 points in each contest. No. 1 overall pick Deandre Ayton has recorded four double-doubles and three 20-point outings in his first six NBA games and is averaging 17.5 points and 10.3 rebounds.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Spurs won all four of last season's meetings and prevailed in 13 of the past 14 matchups.

2. Aldridge is just 18-of-51 from the field over the past three games.

3. Phoenix PG Isaiah Canaan (ankle) will be a game-time decision after being injured in Sunday's game.

PREDICTION: Spurs 121, Suns 117

Pelicans vs. Warriors Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 10/30/2018

Klay Thompson began the season in a massive shooting slump, but it only took one game to break out in a big way. Thompson will try to follow up a record-breaking performance as the Golden State Warriors return home to host the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday.

Thompson, who went 5-of-36 from beyond the arc in the first six games, buried an NBA-record 14 3-pointers and scored 52 points in a 149-124 win at the Chicago Bulls on Monday. "It's the best feeling," Thompson told reporters of finding his shooting stroke. "Something I haven't felt in the first six, seven games. To snap out of a slump with the record, I couldn't ask for a better way to do it. And I'm just going to continue this momentum on Wednesday, and it's one of the best feelings in basketball when you touch the ball and feel like it's going in every time." The Pelicans might have to stop Golden State without their best defender if star forward Anthony Davis (elbow) is forced to miss a third straight game. New Orleans got off to a 4-0 start with Davis leading the way but dropped the last two contests without him in the lineup.

TV: 10:30 p.m. FS New Orleans, NBCS Bay Area (Golden State)

ABOUT THE PELICANS (4-2): New Orleans coach Alvin Gentry refused to blame the absence of his superstar for a 116-111 loss at Denver on Monday in which his team turned the ball over 22 times. "I don't think it's ever understandable to turn the ball over 22 times," Gentry told reporters. "I think what happened is that some of our turnovers came because we were trying to play in really tight, confined spaces. Against that team, you can't do that." Five of those turnovers belonged to reserve power forward Julius Randle, who otherwise played a solid game with 24 points, eight rebounds and six assists in 27 minutes.

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (7-1): Golden State leads the NBA in team field-goal percentage (52.3) and assists (29.6), and coach Steve Kerr remains in awe of the unselfish nature of his team." I can't even tell you how lucky I am and how I feel every night just watching these guys and how unselfish they are," Kerr told reporters. "They basically take turns, they encourage each other, they want each other to do well, and we have all this talent, but the key is these guys are committed to each other, they play hard for each other, and they want each other to have success, and that's why it works, and it's been amazing to be along for the ride." Thompson broke the record of 13 set on Nov. 7, 2016 by teammate Stephen Curry, who went 13-of-17 in a 116-106 home win over New Orleans.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Pelicans PG Elfrid Payton (ankle) sat out Monday and is day-to-day.

2. Warriors PG Shaun Livingston (foot) missed the last two games and is questionable to play Wednesday.

3. The teams are meeting for the first time since Golden State knocked New Orleans out 4-1 in last season's Western Conference semifinals.

PREDICTION: Warriors 133, Pelican 121

# 4 C J'S FLAIR 7/5

# 1 BELLA CARMELLA 7/2

# 5 HER WILD LIFESTYLE 8/1

C J'S FLAIR has a solid shot to take this race. Duncan has this mare running well and is a solid choice based on the very good Speed Figures put up in sprint races as of late. Ran a solid last race. Is tough not to consider based on speed figures which have been decent - 85 avg - of late. BELLA CARMELLA - Has been running solidly and has among the strongest speed in the race for today's distance. Bentler has her trained very well to break promptly out of the gate. HER WILD LIFESTYLE - She has a good opportunity in this event as handler, Bahena, has strong win clip with horses going this distance. Will probably compete very well in the pace contest which bodes well with this group.

# 6 INFINITY OF HUMOR 5/2

# 7 NOW THAT'S A BENNY 3/1

# 4 BOBBY'S BDAY GIRL 6/1

INFINITY OF HUMOR supports the bet in here. Could provide positive returns based on very good recent Equibase Speed Figures with an average of 77. Has ran soundly in dirt sprint races. The speed figure of 81 from her most recent race looks respectable in here. NOW THAT'S A BENNY - Might best this group here, showing formidable numbers of late. I like the jock on this mare - very strong chance to win the contest. BOBBY'S BDAY GIRL - Seems to have a decent class edge based on the most recent company kept. Has performed admirably as of late in sprint races, posting a nifty 75 avg speed figure.

#3 ARMED ESCORT (ML=8/1)
#2 HOT MARKET (ML=5/2)

ARMED ESCORT - Looks like the lone speed of the race. Should be tough on the front-end. Finished off the board last out at Thistledown, but was within five lengths of the winner. Opening at 8/1 makes me think he's got a chance. HOT MARKET - Radosevich drops him down to this class. You don't need too much more from the pp lines to think this horse will be tough to beat at this level. I think Mahoning Valley Race Course players know a good thing when they see the jock/conditioner duo of Colon and Radosevich. Their win percentage together has been good.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 ABIE (ML=7/2), #6 SHEER TALENT (ML=4/1), #10 LAGOON OF DIAMONDS (ML=6/1),

ABIE - Hard to put your dough on the win end of any racer that finishes second and third as frequently as this entrant does. This come from behinder looks to have no chance without a speed battle up front. SHEER TALENT - This gelding finished out of the money on Sep 19th and wasn't close last time out either. LAGOON OF DIAMONDS - Recent deteriorating speed ratings of 86/83/65 give a sign that this horse may be going off form. When scrutinizing today's class rating, he will have to register a much better speed figure than last out to be competitive in this dirt sprint.

#1 LITTLE CHERIE (ML=5/1)
#6 ALMIGHTY STORM (ML=4/1)
#3 JACKIE EMS PAL (ML=8/1)

LITTLE CHERIE - This mare should be in fine condition, this far into her form cycle. Has the look of an overlay in this event at morning odds of 5/1. Finished fifth in last race at Penn National but was close at the end. ALMIGHTY STORM - Arce and Lake perform well when they are put together. It's hard to beat a +40 ROI for a jock and handler. Last out, finished sixth in the slop at Parx Racing. Have to do better in this field. JACKIE EMS PAL - Dropping 6 lbs from last race. Could be a deciding factor today.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 I ZOOM (ML=2/1), #2 AUNT ROSE (ML=5/2), #5 BOWTIE DIVA (ML=6/1),

I ZOOM - This morning-line favorite ran on October 3rd and hasn't had a drill after that. AUNT ROSE - Should have at least finished in the money in the last 60 days in a sprint race to be worth a shot at low odds in a sprint. BOWTIE DIVA - The Brain tells me to stay away from ponies in sprint contests that haven't hit the board in sprint contests of late. Won't be easy for this thoroughbred to beat this group off of that last speed fig. Not likely to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's class figure, so put her on the possibly overvalued equines list.

#1 LITTLE CHERIE to win at post-time odds of 4/1 or better

Game of the Night: Pelicans at Warriors – 10:35 PM EST

Eight games into the season, Golden State (7-1 SU, 4-4 ATS) continues to look like the team that has won three of the past four NBA championships. During this current five-game winning streak, the Warriors have won four of those contest by 20 points or more, while dropping 149 points on the Bulls in Monday’s blowout at the United Center.

Klay Thompson broke the NBA record for most three-pointers made in a game with 14, while putting up 52 points in the win. Perhaps more impressive than Thompson’s shooting barrage was Golden State putting up 92 points in the first half, while picking up a cover as a double-digit favorite for the fourth straight time.

The Pelicans (4-2 SU, 4-2 ATS) jumped out to an impressive 4-0 start, but are coming off back-to-back losses to the Jazz and Nuggets. It’s no coincidence that those defeats were suffered with star Anthony Davis sidelined due to an elbow injury, as his status is in question for tonight’s contest at Oracle Arena. Davis is averaging 27.3 points per game and 13.3 rebounds per game, but replacing the former Kentucky standout is a difficult task. In Monday’s loss at Denver, the Pelicans managed a cover as 9 ½-point underdogs, while fellow UK Wildcat Julius Randle posted a team-high 24 points.

The Warriors knocked out the Pelicans in five games of the opening round of the playoffs last season, but New Orleans managed a pair of covers at Oracle Arena as double-digit underdogs. New Orleans won at Golden State in its final regular season matchup this past April, 126-120 as six-point ‘dogs, as Davis led the Pelicans with 34 points and 12 rebounds.

Same Record, Different Expectations

Both the Lakers and Mavericks own identical 2-5 records. If we turned the clock back one year ago, this wouldn’t be a surprise for these two Western Conference foes. However, Los Angeles has stumbled out of the gate in LeBron James’ first season in Purple and Gold, as the Lakers return home following consecutive road losses at San Antonio and Minnesota. In Monday’s defeat to the Wolves, James scored 29 points, but Minnesota knocked down 14 three-pointers.

The Mavericks are winless away from American Airlines Center this season at 0-4, but picked up a cover as seven-point ‘dogs in Monday’s overtime defeat at San Antonio. Dallas is riding a three-game OVER streak, but have lost four straight since picking up back-to-back home wins over Minnesota and Chicago. Rookie Luka Doncic has been impressive for Dallas through seven games by averaging 20.4 ppg, while scoring a season-high 31 points against the Spurs.

This will be by far the weakest opponent the Lakers have faced at Staples Center this season, as L.A. has already lost to Houston and San Antonio, while handing Denver its only loss. The Lakers captured three of four matchups from the Mavs last season, including a pair of wins at Staples by double-digits.

Bull Crap

That’s exactly what Chicago (2-5 SU, 3-4 ATS) looked like on Monday night in a 149-124 rout at the hands of Golden State. It would have been worse if the Warriors didn’t call off the dogs after scoring 125 points through three quarters, as Chicago suffered its first ATS loss at the United Center this season. The Bulls welcome in another tough Western opponent tonight as Denver makes its lone trip to the Windy City this season.

The Nuggets (5-1 SU, 4-2 ATS) have played a home-heavy schedule so far by posting a 4-0 mark at the Pepsi Center, but failed to cash as nine-point favorites in Monday’s 116-111 victory over the Pelicans. The backcourt duo of Gary Harris and Jamal Murray scored 23 points apiece, while the Nuggets moved to 3-1 to the UNDER at home this season. In fact, this is the first game played east of Denver this season for the Nuggets, whose first two road games were against the L.A. teams. The Nuggets have won five straight meetings with the Bulls, including two straight blowouts at the United Center.

Perfect Sound

The Jazz (4-2 SU, 4-2 ATS) have yet to win a game at home this season, but are riding a 4-0 record away from Salt Lake City. Utah tries to finish off its four-game road trip without a blemish as the Jazz face the Wolves at Target Center. The first three wins were impressive as Utah knocked off Houston, New Orleans, and Dallas, while shooting 52% from the floor in Sunday’s nine-point victory over the Mavericks.

Minnesota (3-4 SU, 3-4 ATS) has not won back-to-back games yet this season, coming off Monday’s 124-120 triumph over the Lakers as a short ‘dog. Jimmy Butler is still on the trade block for Minnesota, but the forward scored 32 points, while knocking down 6-of-7 three-point attempts. These two Northwest division foes split four meetings last season, as each team won one matchup at home and one on the road.

Slowing Down

The Pistons (4-2 SU, 2-4 ATS) rolled out to a fast 4-0 start with only one win against a quality team, edging the 76ers in overtime. Detroit fell back to Earth following back-to-back losses to Boston, but the Pistons hung around in Tuesday’s 108-105 setback at TD Garden as 8 ½-point underdogs. Blake Griffin rebounded from a seven-point performance last Saturday against the Celtics to score 24 points last night and pull down 15 boards.

Detroit heads to Brooklyn with no rest to square off with a Nets’ (2-5 SU, 4-3 ATS) squad that is riding a three-game skid since routing Cleveland last Wednesday. Brooklyn is sitting in the favorite role for the second time this season as the Nets look to avenge an opening night loss at Detroit, 103-100 as six-point underdogs. The Nets haven’t had much luck against the Pistons at home, dropping a pair of contests last season at Barclays Center by 34 and 12 points.

MACtion continues tonight with an East Division contest. Toledo has skyrocketed from -17 to -19 9now. 18.5) and taken the total for a ride also, as that number has gone from 61.5 to 64.5. This Rockets club is not what we are used to watching at only 4-4 and the problem is the defense, which is permitting 33 PPG. Ball State only gains 15 fewer YPG than Toledo but has scored 23.8 PPG compared to their 40.7. The Cardinals will also be without their normal starting QB, which makes matters worse. If you figure the Rockets get their normal scoring average and Ball State just reaches 20, that's a cover for Toledo. The total seems high, but this home team is 17-4 OVER in their stadium after a win by 17 or more points.

10* FREE NCAAF PICK (Toledo -18.5)
I'll take my chances here with Toledo covering the big number at home. I just think that the injuries Ball State is dealing with on the offensive side of the ball are going to be too much to overcome.
The big story line here will be the Cardinals playing without starting quarterback Riley Neal, who is out with a knee injury. That's a big time loss for this team. Neal has a 11-4 TD-INT ratio and is second on the team with 357 rushing yards and tied for the team lead with 5 rushing touchdowns.
They could also be playing without leading rusher James Gilbert (questionable) and backup running back Caleb Huntley (questionable). Gilbert is dealing with a back injury and Huntley hasn't played the last 3 games. Starting left tackle Kaleb Slaven is also doubtful to play. There's only one injury on defense, but it's a big one in star linebacker Jacob White, who led the team in tackles last year.
After watching how badly this team played after Neal went down against Ohio last week, I just don't know how you can trust this team to show up on the road against a team like Toledo, who can score in bunches. The Rockets had over 515 yards on the road against a pretty good Western Michigan team and Ball State let Ohio rack up 554 yards in their last contest.
Another thing here, is this Ball State team hasn't exactly performed great when things are going poorly. The Cardinals are just 2-9 in their last 11 off a loss by 10 or more to a conference rival. They are also a mere 1-8 ATS off a loss by 21 or more and have lost the next time out by an average of 30.3 points/game.
On the flip side of this, the Rockets have been a great team to back when they are fresh off a big win. In fact, Toledo is 14-4 ATS in their last 18 home games off a conference win by 21 or more points. I just don't think it's asking a lot for the Rockets to win here by at least 20 points. Give me Toledo -18.5!

These two teams have already met the first game of the season and the Pistons came out on top winning by 3. In that game though the Nets were ice cold from long range shooting 18% from distance. That number will change and I think we get a motivated Nets team with revenge plus coming off an ugly loss against the Knicks.
The Pistons are in a tougher spot here giving a huge effort last night against the Celtics but came up short. In fact both of their losses are against Boston. The line is telling you something here wy the Nets are favored and this will move higher.

Scott "The Bulldog" Rickenbach NBA Game #701 Wednesday Free Pick Detroit Pistons (+) @ Brooklyn Nets @ 7:35 ET - This is a revenge game for the Nets and the Pistons are in a back to back spot. However, it won't matter. Brooklyn's strength on defense this season has been stopping the 3-ball but that is not what Detroit does. The Pistons pound teams inside with Blake Griffin and Andre Drummond and the Nets simply can not stop this! Also, Detroit is NOT in a good mood! They are fired up off back to back losses to the Celtics and that means there is no doubt that Detroit brings their "A game" for this one. The fact we can get a few points in addition to backing the team that should dominate this one is why you're reading about this right here in this spot. Looks like a great spot for a winner for us. In terms of technical support, the Pistons have won 3 straight games over Brooklyn and also the road team is a perfect 5-0 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these teams! The Nets are 19-70 SU in games against teams with a winning record! Grab the road dog here! Yes, it is a back to back but the Pistons are hungry and take out their frustration on an over-matched Brooklyn team in this one! Free Pick DETROIT

I like the Nets far more as a 'dog than favorite. The teams met opening night in Detroit and the Pistons won, 103-100. That game was close and Detroit failed to cover as a 6-point favorite. However, the Nets shot 48.8 percent from the floor while the Pistons hit just 42.4 percent of their field goal attempts. Both teams are off disappointing losses. The Pistons opened 4-0, but are now 4-2 after consecutive losses to the Celtics. No shame in that. The Pistons aren't in Boston's class for sure. But they are a level higher than the Nets. Brooklyn was blown out by the Knicks on Monday. The Nets were outrebounded, 53-32, by the Knicks. The Nets also were outrebounded by nine in their loss to the Pistons. They couldn't control Andre Drummond, who had 24 points and 20 rebounds. The Nets are going to have trouble again with Drummond on the boards. Blake Griffin and Drummond provide the Pistons with the two best players on the court. Detroit is 5-1 in its last six games against the Nets. The Pistons beat the Nets in both meetings at Barclays Center last season winning by 34 and 12 points. The Utah Jazz are one of the best teams in the NBA. And they’ve been playing their best on the road this season as they’ve gone 4-0 SU & 3-1 ATS with all four victories coming by at least 6 points. They won by 11 in Houston, by 21 in New Orleans and by 9 in Dallas in their last three games coming in. Now they face a Minnesota Timberwolves team that could be without three starters. Jimmy Butler is out due to rest and Jeff Teague is out with a knee injury. Andrew Wiggins is questionable with a quad injury. Give me the Jazz.

The Key: The Bulls are catching a few too many points at home tonight to the Denver Nuggets. The last thing the betting public remembers was the Bulls giving up 51 points and an NBA-record 14 3-pointers to Klay Thompson in a 149-124 Warriors win. But the Bulls had played well prior to that defeat and it was simply a once-in-a-lifetime performance from Thompson. They should be able to hang with the Nuggets tonight, who won’t be taking them too seriously. The Nuggets have played just 2 road games this season and split them with a win over the Clippers and a loss to the Lakers. They aren’t nearly as good on the road as they are at home through the years. Denver is 2-12 ATS in its last 14 games after scoring 110 points or more in 3 consecutive games. Take Chicago.

NBA | Mavs vs Lakers
Play on: Lakers -7½ -105 at 5Dimes

Jack’s Free Pick Wednesday: Los Angeles Lakers -7.5
The Los Angeles Lakers are highly motivated for a victory here Wednesday night when they host the Dallas Mavericks. They have gotten off to a disappointing 2-5 start this season and really need to get things turned around in a hurry. So they’ll be playing with a sense of urgency.
Part of the reason for the Lakers’ early struggles have been suspensions to Rajon Rondo and Brandon Ingram. But both are back now and the Lakers are at full strength. They will be a dangerous team moving forward. And you have to consider that all five of their losses have been by single-digits, so they’ve had a chance to win every game.
The Mavericks are also 2-5 this season. Both of their wins came at home against the struggling Bulls and Timberwolves. They also have road losses to two of the worst teams in the NBA in Phoenix (by 21) and Atlanta (by 7). I don’t think the Mavs have what it takes to hang with the Lakers tonight.
The Lakers went 3-1 SU & 3-1 ATS in their three meetings with the Mavs last season, winning their two home meetings by 22 and 10 points. The home team is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings. The Mavericks are 1-8 ATS in their last nine games following an ATS win. Dallas is 2-16 ATS off a cover where they lost straight up as an underdog over the last two seasons. Bet the Lakers Wednesday.

Play on: UNDER 234½ -105

1* Free Pick on Lakers/Mavs UNDER 234.5
We are seeing a big overreaction here with the total for tonight's NBA action between the Lakers and Mavs. LA has seen the OVER cash in 6 of their 7 games, while Dallas has gone OVER the mark in 5 of their 7. I'm not saying this won't be a high-scoring game, but there's simply too much value here with the UDNER at this price.
Note that the Mavs have only had two totals all season of 225 or more and both of those stayed UNDER the mark. The UNDER is 13-3 in Dallas' last 16 road games after 3 straight games with a combined score of 215 or more.
I also think we are going to get big efforts defensively from both teams. Dallas is desperate for a win after losing 4 straight and the Lakers really need a victory after starting out the season just 2-5.
History is also on our side, as the UNDER is 58-26 (69%) in the last 84 game s where you had two bad teams (25% to 40%) with a total of 220 or more. Take the UNDER!

My money is on the Lakers to cash in an easy win and cover at home against the Mavs tonight. Los Angeles desperately needs to get a win here, as they have started out just 2-5 on the season. It's not like they are playing poorly. All 5 losses have come by single digits. They just need to close out games late. That shouldn't be a problem against Dallas, who has lost 4 straight and figures to be on the outside looking in at the playoff race in the west. Mavs are 0-4 on the road, where they are getting outscored 115.2 to 104.7. Bet the Lakers -6.5!

**6-1 FREE PICK RUN ~ 18-8 SINCE SEPTEMBER 1**
The Phoenix Suns have lost five straight had failed to cover the spread in four consecutive games before finally losing by "only" seven as a 13.5-point underdog at Oklahoma City. I think they're in for a tough game here when hosting the San Antonio Spurs on Halloween.
The Spurs have won three of their last four but can't be all to excited about their performance in a 113-108 overtime win over the Dallas Mavericks on Monday. San Antonio should have closed out the game earlier but allowed Dallas to battle back in the second half.
I expect Spurs coach Gregg Popovich to have his team ready here for a Suns team which might have to do without star shooting guard Devin Booker for a third straight game.
Spurs are 8-3 ATS in the last 11 meetings and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400.
Free pick on San Antonio Spurs.

Big total for Halloween night in this Ball State-Toledo contest, especially when you consider that the Cardinals starting quarterback is officially out, while the Toledo quarterback is questionable.

Still, I say play the Over as these teams tend to both score points and give up points, especially Ball State which has allowed a whopping 94 points or the past 2 weeks.

The Rockets posted 51 points in their win at Western Michigan last week, as the Over moved to 6-2 for the year for Coach Candle's Rockets.

Last year the teams snapped a 4 game series Under streak in Toledo's 58-17 road win and cover.

It was Yogi Berra that once said: "It's deja-vu all over again!"

Well, another 58-17 Toledo win tonight on their home field at the Glass Bowl would not actually be that much of a stretch. You add up those numbers, and that totals 75 points which would be good enough for another Over.

Plenty of tricks and treats this Halloween in Toledo.

I hit the Charlotte Hornets as my free play last night, and tonight I'll nail the Indiana Pacers, who are on the road and laying -6 to the New York Knicks.

The Pacers, who dating back to last season have covered 11 of 14 against the Atlantic Division, have shown some offensive prowess this season.

It's that type of league again, where teams are scoring in droves, and averaging 100 points is low. Indiana is averaging 109, and has scored 110.2 in its last five overall. That won't bode well for the Knicks, who are struggling at the moment, having lost five of six - albeit they won their last gaame.

Against superior competition - Golden State, Miami, Milwaukee, Boston - the Knicks have been brutal. During a five-game losing streak, New York allowed the aforementioned four, plus Brooklyn, an average of 114.4 points per game.

While the home team has covered 22 of the last 28 meetings, the favorite has cashed out 15 of 22 times. Take the Pacers, as they roll to a double-digit win.

Comp play for Wednesday on the Jazz to play some sweet money music in Minnesota.

Utah is 4-2 on the season, and believe it or not, ALL 4 of their victories have come away from home where they are a perfect 4-0 straight up. Tonight concludes a 4 game road trip that has seen them cover in games at Houston, New Orleans and Dallas already.

Minnesota just ended a 2 game slide with a win at home over the LeBron James -led Lakers. My guess is the Wolves suffer a letdown after the hype of King James making a stop in the Twin Cities on Monday.

Utah has held the upper-hand of late, taking the last pair of showdowns, and 7 of the last 10 overall. The Jazz is also 4-1 against the spread the last 5 games played at the Target Center.

Cheap price to me based on the facts I just listed.

Play the Jazz.

My free play for tonight is on the Los Angeles Lakers against the Dallas Mavericks, as I'm laying the chalk with the King you don't want to be around when he becomes impatient.

It was a clip heard round the nation the other night, when a reporter asked LeBron James about him becoming impatient. And while it may be true nobody wants to be around him, the media happens to be every gameday in a scrum after morning shootaround, and before and after games.

James has to be frustrated with not the losses the Lakers are enduring, but the way they're losing. Of their five losses this season, the Lakers have lost the last three by 1, 4 and 4. They're not playing badly, they're just not executing at the time they need to, in order to get the win.

That'll change. They're seven games into the season, and they have a chance tonight to spark some motivation and momentum against a Dallas team that has lost four straight, allowing 113.25 points during the skid.

The Mavs are playing their fourth road game in eight days, and fifth overall in that span - in as many cities. Since Oct. 24, they've played in Atlanta, Toronto, Dallas, San Antonio and now Los Angeles.

The Jazz and Spurs were back-to-back, and the others had one day in between. Believe me, this team is very tired, and I expect the Lakers to pounce.

Lay the home chalk.

Wednesday comp play comes in the NHL as I look for Vancouver to win on their home ice over Chicago.

The Canucks have been a pleasant surprise this year, as they enter play for Wednesday with a 7-6 mark. That includes a 5-2 win over Minnesota on Monday night on their home ice. The Canucks boast the likely rookie-of-the-year in one Elias Pettersson who already has 7 goals this year which is remarkable considering he has missed 6 games with a concussion!

As for the Blackhawks, they are looking to snap a 2-game losing streak, but more importantly, they are looking to snap a 4-game series losing streak to the Canucks.

Not sure Chicago should be the favored team here?

Line value tonight in the lone NHL clash rests with the host.

Take 'em.

Vancouver the play.

My FREE Winner for tonight is on the VANCOUVER CANUCKS at home in their Western Conference skate against the Chicago Blackhawks.

The SKINNY on this Game - I love the Vancouver Canucks tonight, plus the money at home against the Chicago Blackhawks. No reason we don't take the money with a team that has been playing well, has enough momemtum - and motivation - not to mention the most talented rookie in the league, when it is getting money. Vancouver has one more win than Chicago, and has shown resiliency no matter who the opponent might be.

The X-FACTOR in this Game - My key is the aforementioned rookie, Elias Petterson, who has seven goals to start his career, in seven games. This is a kid who is meeting early expectations. He finds ways to get open, he communicates well on the ice, he finds himself in the right spots at the right times, he is good on the forecheck, and if you've actually watched this kid toe drag, with the perfect curve on his blade - watch him tonight. He is special, and I'm telling you now, he is the frontrunner for NHL Rookie of the Year.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS with this Game - The numbers I want you to focus on here come from special teams, as the Chicago Blackhawks have the second-worst power play unit in the league. They rank 30th after converting just 5-of-41 with a man advantage. That couples nicely with the Canucks, who rank 8th in the NHL on the penalty kill, allowing just 8-of-52 goals to the opposition on a power play. Also, the 'Hawks are 22nd in the NHL on the road with their penalty kill, so while they don't spend a lot of time in the box - they rank fourth in the league with 7.5 penalty minutes per game - they tend to be costly. Look for the home pup to grab the cash.

On Halloween night on ESPN 2 at 7:30 eastern we are backing Ball St pus the 17-18 points at Toledo. Ball St has covered the spread 6 straight times here and the road team has covered the last 4 in this series. Ball. St should be better here than they were last week in ohio. Toledo could be flat as they pulled a big upset dog win last week over Western Michigan. The Rockets are 0-5 ats off a spread win and have failed to cover 4 of 5 after passing for 280+ yards. They are 0-5 ats after rushing for over 200 yards. Toledo wins this but Ball St gets the cover. On Halloween no tricks just a 5* NBA Perfect system blowout headlining. RV- GC Sports
