Kent State Golden Flashes vs. Buffalo Bulls Preview and Predictions 11-06-2018

NCAAF Predictions 5th November 2018 By Charles Jay for Scores And Stats
by Charles Jay Scores & Stats on 11/05/2018

The Kent State Golden Flashes are not going to a bowl game this season, which means they are going to have to make the most of these last three games for first-year head coach Sean Lewis.

The Buffalo Bulls, on the other hand, are possibly headed toward their greatest season ever, with a quarterback who may be bound for the NFL someday and an offensive line that really knows how to protect him.

In the Mid-American Conference's quest for exposure, these teams get together for a Tuesday night showcase at UB Stadium in Buffalo.

TV: ESPNU, 7:30 PM ET. LINE: Buffalo -21.5

ABOUT KENT STATE: When you have an opportunity to get a win, you take it, and so Kent State (2-7 SU, 6-3 ATS) was happy to have encountered a floundering Bowling Green squad last Tuesday night. The Falcons lack defense and have been through a coaching change, and they also went into that game with a 1-7 record, but it was a struggle nonetheless for KSU, which trailed 13-7 at one point but came out of it with a 35-28 victory. Woody Barrett was inconsistent, going just 14 of 24 for 157 yards, but the Flashes really made the ground game work against a defense that was yielding 6.6 yards a carry. Barrett had 77 yards on the ground, but the real standout was Jo-el Shaw, who had 128 yards in place of the injured Justin Rankin. Shaw, from Pittsburgh, was originally committed to Syracuse, where current Kent State head coach Sean Lewis was the co-offensive coordinator. He didn't qualify academically, so he went to junior college. Lewis reached out for him when he got the head job with the Golden Flashes. Lewis' first signee at Kent State was Barrett, who was impressive enough as a high school prospect that he was brought aboard by Gus Malzahn at Auburn, and then transferred to JC ball last spring when there was too much of a logjam at quarterback.

ABOUT BUFFALO: Like Kent State, the Bulls (8-1 SU, 7-2 ATS) played last Tuesday on the ESPN networks, and although they had a difficult time with Miami of Ohio's Gus Ragland, they were almost impossible to stop in their 51-42 victory at home. Tyree Jackson threw for 358 yards, and the guy he repeatedly looked to was Anthony Johnson, who had eight receptions for 238 yards and three touchdowns. Jackson is a downfield passer, averaging almost eight yards an attempt, and he has 23 TD passes. The 6-7 junior has been sacked only eight times. Johnson had only one 100-yard game before last Tuesday; he is actually the team's second-leading receiver, behind KJ Osborn (730 yards). There are a lot of other reasons the Bulls have been successful. They have some balance in the offense, with Kevin Marks and Jaret Patterson both approaching 600 yards rushing. And they've also got a +10 turnover margin. They are very competitive on the stop end, and in fact rank 16th in the nation in Passing Efficiency Defense. Junior linebacker Khalil Hodge ranks sixth in the nation in tackles. Last season he was second. Buffalo currently leads the MAC East division with a 5-0 record.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Buffalo head coach Lance Leipold won six national championships at the Division III level at Wisconsin-Whitewater and was runner-up another occasion. In each case, his team played Mount Union in the title game.

2. Kent State likes to operate with some "tempo," and indeed they are ninth in the nation in "Adjusted Pace." But since they don't generate enough on offense, they are outside the nation's top 100 in Time of Possession.

3. Kent State is dead last in the nation in two categories - Tackles for Loss allowed (10.56 per game) and Penalties Per Game (10.22).

PREDICTION: Buffalo 44, Kent State 21

Michigan St Spartans vs. Kansas Jayhawks Preview and Predictions 11-06-2018

NCAAB Predictions 4th November 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 11/04/2018

Two of the top teams in the nation face off in a season-opening contest when top-ranked Kansas and No. 10 Michigan State battle in the State Farm Champions Classic in Indianapolis on Tuesday. The Jayhawks and Spartans lost key players from last season's squads but bring back experienced players as well as some top recruits to make themselves into title contenders again.

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo would like to have NBA lottery picks Miles Bridges and Jaren Jackson Jr. back, but he has three starters returning including point guard Cassius Winston, the team's leading returning scorer (12.6 points) and the Big Ten's assist leader (6.9). Forward Nick Ward will be the key for the Spartans down low after averaging 12.4 points and 7.1 rebounds in 18.9 minutes as a sophomore. Ward and the Spartans could have a tough time in the paint against Kansas thanks to the presence of 7-0 junior center Udoka Azubuike (13 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.7 blocks last season), who is a load on both ends of the floor. Jayhawks fans are excited about the brother duo of Dedric and K.J. Lawson, who are eligible to play after transferring from Memphis, where they averaged 19.2 and 12.3 points, respectively, in 2016-17.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT MICHIGAN STATE (2017-18: 30-5): Ward and Winston have garnered a majority of the preseason headlines and accolades, but for Izzo and Michigan State, the most important returning junior starter is likely guard Joshua Langford. The junior was the only Spartan to start every game last season, averaged 11.7 points, but was inconsistent with his shot and his scoring output. For example, one game after opening the NCAA Tournament with 22 points on 7-of-10 shooting, Langford was 1-of-12 -- including 1-of-7 from 3-point range -- against the zone defense of Syracuse, one of the reasons for the Spartans' upset loss to the Orange.

ABOUT KANSAS (2017-18: 31-8): With the departure of the team's leading scorer and assist man, Devonte' Graham, coach Bill Self has to figure out a new starter at the point guard position, though he has a few options. To start the season, Self will likely go with highly regarded freshman Devon Dotson, a McDonald's All-American, who averaged seven points and three assists in the team's two exhibition contests. If Dotson struggles, Self can turn to California transfer Charlie Moore, who led the Golden Bears in assists as a freshman, though both will certainly see plenty of time throughout the season.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Winston led the Big Ten in 3-point field goal percentage in 2017-18, hitting 49.7 percent of his shots from beyond the arc.

2. Azubuike led the nation and set the Kansas and Big 12 single-season record for field goal percentage at 77.0 in 2007-18.

3. Michigan State has lost three of its last four contests at the Champions Classic, though that one win was over Kansas in 2015.

PREDICTION: Kansas 82, Michigan State 72

Duke Blue Devils vs. Kentucky Wildcats Preview and Predictions 11-06-2018

NCAAB Predictions 5th November 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 11/05/2018

A major showdown will take place on the opening night of the season when No. 2 Kentucky faces No. 3 Duke in the State Farm Champions Classic in Indianapolis on Tuesday. The Wildcats have a deep incoming class while also landing Stanford transfer Reid Travis, and the Blue Devils unveil the nation's top three recruits in RJ Barrett, Zion Williamson and Cam Reddish.

Travis brings 98 games of experience to a young roster and is looking forward to a top-level opponent in his first game at Kentucky. "The mood is a lot of excitement," Travis said in a press conference. "Taking it game by game, but obviously we're getting to the real big games so it's a lot of excitement in the locker room. We want to get better, and just continue to prepare to grow." Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski is still defining roles but will throw his freshman trio of stars into the fire and see how things play out. "We'll face different tempos and obviously Kentucky will be one of the most talented teams that we will play, but we just have to keep moving," Krzyzewski said during a press conference. "We're developing really good habits."

TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT DUKE (2017-18: 29-8): The college debut of Williamson has been an anticipated event since early in his high school career and Kentucky was one of the schools he shunned. The 6-foot-7, 285-pound Williamson has mixed well with fellow forwards Barrett and Reddish as well as another incoming freshman in point guard Tre Jones while also impressing his older teammates. "He's so much more than just an incredible athlete," junior forward Jack White said during a press conference. "One thing that sticks out to me is his passing ability. He can really pass the ball. He's a really smart player. He always seems to make the right play. He makes his teammates better."

ABOUT KENTUCKY (2017-18: 26-11): Travis (19.5 points, 8.7 rebounds) and sophomore forward PJ Washington (10.8 points, 5.7 rebounds) give the Wildcats a solid frontcourt duo that ranks among the best in the nation. Sophomore guard Quade Green (9.3) was a part-time starter last season and freshman Tyler Herro is expected to be a major 3-point threat, but Kentucky may get some answers about some of the other newcomers during the game against the Blue Devils. "We've got a couple of days to prepare for this next one, that will be a hard game," Kentucky coach John Calipari said at a press conference. "Now may be harder than I thought. We need more energy defensively and the game Tuesday will be great for film to see who needs to do what."

TIP-INS

1. Kentucky leads the series 12-9, but Duke has prevailed in seven of the past nine meetings.

2. Junior C Marques Bolden (3.9 average) is the Blue Devils' leading returning scorer.

3. Travis scored 20 or more points on 18 occasions and posted 16 double-doubles in his final season at Stanford.

PREDICTION: Kentucky 76, Duke 75

Atlanta Hawks vs. Charlotte Hornets Preview and Predictions 11-06-2018

NBA Predictions 5th November 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 11/05/2018

The Charlotte Hornets look to defeat Atlanta for the eighth time in the past nine meetings when they host the Hawks on Tuesday. Charlotte is 2-1 on a four-game homestand with double-digit wins over the Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers along with a loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Hornets notched their largest winning margin (32 points) of the season when they rolled a 126-94 victory over the Cavaliers on Saturday. Star guard Kemba Walker scored a season-low 18 points in the contest but he was one of seven players in double figures. The Hawks halted a four-game slide with a 123-118 win over the Heat on Saturday as they recorded their second-highest scoring output of the campaign. Rookie point guard Trae Young contributed 24 points and a season-best 15 assists for his second straight double-double and third of the season.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Southeast (Atlanta, Charlotte)

ABOUT THE HAWKS (3-6): Young has made an immediate impact and is averaging team-best marks of 19.1 points and 7.9 assists. He has scored 20 or more points on four occasions and reached double figures in all nine games but his 3-point shooting (18-of-56) has been inconsistent. Forward Taurean Prince ranks second in scoring at 15.4 points and he tallied 15 points against Miami after averaging just seven on 7-of-35 shooting over a three-game stretch.

ABOUT THE HORNETS (5-5): Backup guard Jeremy Lamb scored a season-best 19 points against Cleveland and has reached double digits in eight of the first 10 games. Lamb is averaging 11.9 points while sparking the second unit and coach James Borrego is pleased with the 26-year-old's production. "I thought he was fantastic," Borrego told reporters after the win over the Cavaliers. "Just his aggressiveness and a lot of it wasn't just settling for shots, he was getting to the rim, into the paint, he put pressure on the defense."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Hornets won last season's four meetings by an average of 13.5 points.

2. Charlotte PG Tony Parker has scored in double digits in each of his past five games and is averaging 16.2 points during the stretch.

3. Atlanta released an update of F John Collins (ankle) on Monday, saying he was re-evaluated and may return to practice later this week.

PREDICTION: Hornets 106, Hawks 99

Washington Wizards vs. Dallas Mavericks Preview and Predictions 11-06-2018

NBA Predictions 5th November 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 11/05/2018

The Dallas Mavericks aim to snap a six-game losing streak when they host the Washington Wizards on Tuesday. The good news for Dallas is seeing the Wizards on the schedule as the Mavericks have won the last four meetings and 15 of the past 16.

Dallas lost by single digits in each of the first five games of its slide before suffering a 118-106 setback against the New York Knicks on Friday. "At this point, we've got to get angry," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle told reporters. "We've got to get more together. We've got to have two great practice days. That's where we are." Washington is off to a miserable start but is coming off a solid 108-95 defensive-minded win over the Knicks on Sunday. "It was nice to see below 100," Wizards coach Scott Brooks told reporters. "We haven't seen that. I think the guys competed. We started off the game with our best defense of the early season and then we finished that."

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, NBATV, NBCS Washington, FS Southwest (Dallas)

ABOUT THE WIZARDS (2-7): Center Dwight Howard had a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds) on Sunday after scoring 20 points two nights earlier in his season debut. Howard is bothered by a strained muscle in his buttocks that makes it extremely painful to try to sit down but his first two efforts were encouraging considering the circumstances. "If you want me to judge him after two games, he did pretty good," Brooks told reporters. "I like his enthusiasm. I like his smile. He's a good-looking guy, and he uses it all the time."

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (2-7): Standout rookie forward Luka Doncic is dealing with an ankle injury but he returned to practice on Monday and his availability will be firmed up on Tuesday. Doncic has been an impact player with Dallas and is averaging 19.4 points, 6.6 rebounds and 4.6 assists through nine games. "He's unique as an NBA rookie because he's been a professional for six years already (in the EuroLeague)," Carlisle told reporters. "That is an advantage for him coming into this. He's played in a lot of high stakes competition both in the EuroLeague and internationally with Slovenia. Those games with the national team are high pressure games for national pride, and it's a big deal."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Mavericks won last season's two meetings by an average of 18.5 points.

2. Dallas backup PG Devin Harris (hamstring) is making progress but Carlisle termed it an unlikely that Harris will play against the Wizards.

3. Washington SF Otto Porter Jr. (toe) returned to practice after sitting out Sunday's game.

PREDICTION: Wizards 116, Mavericks 109

Brooklyn Nets vs. Phoenix Suns Preview and Predictions 11-06-2018

NBA Predictions 5th November 2018 by Gracenote
Nets vs. Suns Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 11/05/2018

The Phoenix Suns missed Devin Booker when he wasn't in the lineup and look to post a second straight win when they host the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday. Booker drained the decisive shot in Sunday's 102-100 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies to end Phoenix's seven-game slide.

The star shooting guard missed three games with a hamstring injury before returning for Friday's loss against the Toronto Raptors and looked on his game Sunday when he scored 25 points and hit the game-winning shot with 1.7 seconds remaining. "It's new life around here," Booker told reporters. "New energy. You see a lot of smiles. Hopefully, we like this feeling and want to come out and play that much harder versus Brooklyn." The Nets are just 1-4 on the road as they begin a stretch in which they play four straight and seven of nine in enemy venues. Brooklyn is coming off a strong performance in which it rolled to a 122-97 triumph over the Philadelphia 76ers.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, YES (Brooklyn), FS Arizona (Phoenix)

ABOUT THE NETS (4-6): Forward Rondae Hollis-Jefferson enjoyed his top offensive performance of the season against Philadelphia by scoring 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting. Hollis-Jefferson is just finding his stride after missing all of the preseason due to an adductor strain and anything he provides offensively is a bonus as he typically makes a big impact on the defensive end. "Whatever he adds on the offensive end or wherever else, I think that's just the cherry on top," point guard D'Angelo Russell told reporters. "But he's always going to be that work hard, scrappy guy, make the play, but he has offensive skills as well. I think he's falling into his rhythm. He needed that game just to get that confidence right."

ABOUT THE SUNS (2-7): Rookie forward Mikal Bridges contributed 14 points in the win over Memphis, two games after scoring a season-high 16 against the San Antonio Spurs. Bridges has played more than 20 minutes in four of the past five games and is carving himself a role while impressing his teammates. "I love being on the floor with him," Booker told reporters. "He does everything it takes to win. He spaces the floor, he defends, he's long and lanky, he has really good instincts that not a lot of people have and he's well-coached at Villanova. They know how to win."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Nets have won five of the past six meetings.

2. Brooklyn SG Caris LeVert has scored 20 or more points in back-to-back games and six times overall this season.

3. Phoenix waived C Tyson Chandler after agreeing to a buyout of his contract.

PREDICTION: Suns 114, Nets 111

Milwaukee Bucks vs. Portland Trail Blazers Preview and Predictions 11-06-2018

NBA Predictions 5th November 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 11/05/2018

The Milwaukee Bucks have matched the best nine-game start in franchise history and look to add another victory when they visit the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday. Milwaukee has won eight of its first nine games to join the 1971-72 squad led by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the franchise's top mark.

The Bucks continued their strong opening stretch by rolling to a 144-109 win over the Sacramento Kings on Sunday. Milwaukee set a franchise record with 22 made 3-pointers and also registered its most points in a non-overtime game since racking up 147 against the San Antonio Spurs on March 18, 1979. Portland has won four of its last five games and pounded the Minnesota Timberwolves 111-81 on Sunday to improve to 7-3. "To be sitting where we are now, I'm sure people didn't expect it," star point guard Damian Lillard told reporters. "I think we're playing good basketball. We've been pretty consistent with the things that we need to do to win games and it's showing."

TV: 10 p.m. ET, FS Wisconsin (Milwaukee), NBCS Northwest (Portland)

ABOUT THE BUCKS (8-1): Star forward Giannis Antetokounmpo posted his second triple-double of the season and 12th of his career with 26 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists in the rout of the Kings. Antetokounmpo was one of eight players to reach double digits against Sacramento as solid ball movement was evident throughout the easy victory. "Hopefully, one of the keys to Giannis being great is everybody around him being great," Milwaukee coach Mike Budenholzer told reporters. "We can also talk about a lot of other guys who played well, too. So, that's a great sign for Giannis and a great sign for us."

ABOUT THE TRAIL BLAZERS (7-3): The victory over Minnesota came one night after a stunning home loss against the Los Angeles Lakers and Lillard liked how his team bounced back against the Timberwolves, who were without guards Jimmy Butler and Derrick Rose. "I think it speaks to our maturity," Lillard told reporters. "In the past, we might have let that one slip (Saturday) and then come back and been, I guess, too emotional about it, like a younger team would be, kind of holding on to it. It would carry over to (Sunday)." Center Jusuf Nurkic has posted back-to-back double-doubles after recording 19 points and 12 rebounds against Minnesota and has five for the season.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Bucks won both of last season's meetings and prevailed in six of the past seven.

2. Milwaukee SF Khris Middleton has made three or more 3-pointers in eight of the first nine games.

3. Portland backup SG Nik Stauskas (quadriceps) is questionable after departing Sunday's game.

PREDICTION: Trail Blazers 112 Bucks 110

Dallas Stars vs. Columbus Blue Jackets Preview and Predictions 11-06-2018

NHL Predictions 6th November 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 11/06/2018

The Dallas Stars' three-game winning streak may be over, but they hope to continue their run of points when they conclude a six-game road trip Tuesday against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Dallas began the trek with a loss in Detroit but reeled off three straight victories before dropping a 2-1 overtime decision in Boston on Monday.

Radek Faksa scored the lone goal in the setback for the Stars, who are 3-3-1 overall on the road this season and have recorded a total of four tallies in the defeats. Columbus looks to avoid a third consecutive loss after falling 3-2 in overtime at Anaheim on Sunday. Pierre-Luc Dubois netted both tallies for the Blue Jackets, giving him five in his last seven contests and pulling him within one of Josh Anderson (seven) for the team lead. Artemi Panarin leads Columbus with 15 points but has been kept off the scoresheet in each of his last four contests.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, Sportsnet, FS Southwest Plus (Dallas), FS Ohio (Columbus)

ABOUT THE STARS (8-5-1): Tyler Seguin leads the team with 14 points but has scored only three goals after registering a career-high 40 last season. The 26-year-old center has gone 11 games without a tally, notching just six assists in that span. Captain Jamie Benn, who tops the club with six goals, was kept off the scoresheet Monday after recording two tallies and an assist during a three-game point streak.

ABOUT THE BLUE JACKETS (7-6-1): Despite a lack of offensive production, Markus Hannikainen has earned the favor of coach John Tortorella over the last six games after being scratched for each of the team's first eight contests. "He's not coming out of the lineup," Tortorella told the team's website of the 25-year-old Finnish left wing, who has recorded two assists in six games. "He's played that well as far as his effort and around the puck." Brandon Dubinsky has recorded an assist in two games since returning from an oblique injury, giving him three points in four contests this season.

OVERTIME

1. Blue Jackets LW Anthony Duclair is three points shy of 100 for his career.

2. Dallas G Ben Bishop will be in the crease Tuesday after Anton Khudobin made his fourth start of the season in the loss to Boston.

3. Columbus has gone 0-for-20 on the power play over its last five games while allowing three short-handed goals.

PREDICTION: Stars 4, Blue Jackets 3

Montreal Canadiens vs. New York Rangers Preview and Predictions 11-06-2018

NHL Predictions 5th November 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 11/05/2018

The New York Rangers attempt to extend their season-high winning streak to four games when they host the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday for a battle between Original Six teams. New York had not recorded consecutive victories this campaign prior to its current run, which was stretched with Sunday's 3-1 home triumph over Buffalo.

Jimmy Vesey ended his six-game goal-scoring drought with authority as he registered his second two-goal performance of 2018-19 for the Rangers, who have posted four of their six wins at home. New York could be without a pair of forwards against Montreal as Ryan Spooner (lower body) is day-to-day while rookie Brett Howden, who has recorded a goal and four assists in his last five games, exited Sunday's win after crashing face-first into the end boards. The Canadiens are hoping to register consecutive victories for just the second time this season after edging the New York Islanders 4-3 in a shootout on Monday. Montreal rallied from a 3-1 deficit and improved to 3-1-2 on the road when Joel Armia scored the lone goal of the bonus format in the fifth round.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, TSN2, RDS (Montreal), MSG (New York)

ABOUT THE CANADIENS (8-4-2): Max Domi has been wielding a hot stick for Montreal, registering at least one of his team-leading 15 points in nine of his last 10 games after notching a goal and an assist on Monday. The 23-year-old center, who is the son of former NHL enforcer Tie Domi, has tallied in seven of his last nine contests. The Canadiens are hoping forward Jonathan Drouin also is heating up, as the 23-year-old scored a goal and set up another versus the Islanders after recording just one assist in his previous five games.

ABOUT THE RANGERS (6-7-1): Mats Zuccarello has notched seven points in his last nine games and leads the team with seven assists. The 31-year-old Norwegian's next assist will be his 221st, snapping a tie with Phil Esposito for 25th place on the franchise list. Henrik Lundqvist has posted back-to-back victories following an 0-3-1 stretch and needs two wins to tie the legendary Jacques Plante (437) for seventh place on the all-time list.

OVERTIME

1. Lundqvist has gone 4-0-0 with one shutout, a 0.94 goals-against average and a .967 save percentage in his last four appearances - including playoffs - versus the Canadiens.

2. Montreal LW Artturi Lehkonen scored the game-tying goal on Monday, his first tally since the season opener at Toronto on Oct. 3.

3. The Rangers recalled 20-year-old C Lias Andersson, who recorded a goal and an assist in seven games with the club last season, from Hartford of the American Hockey League.

PREDICTION: Rangers 5, Canadiens 2

Vegas Golden Knights vs. Toronto Maple Leafs Preview and Predictions 11-06-2018

NHL Predictions 5th November 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 11/05/2018

While the Toronto Maple Leafs have yet to taste defeat on the road, their home cooking has left a bit to be desired heading into Tuesday's contest versus the visiting Vegas Golden Knights. The Maple Leafs have seen their offense take a significant dip in front of the home folks, registering just 2.0 goals per game at home (3-5-0) after recording a gaudy 5.33 on the road (6-0-0).

John Tavares' numbers have followed suit, as he has mustered just four points (one goal, three assists) in eight games in Toronto as opposed to 12 (seven goals, five assists) in six road contests - including a goal and an assist in Saturday's 5-0 romp in Pittsburgh. "A textbook win on the road, nice to get that feeling back. We have to try and have a little bit of that mindset (at home), simplify things maybe, trust who we are as a team and individually," the 28-year-old Ontario native told reporters. While Toronto has prospered on the road, Vegas has struggled away from Sin City with losses in five of seven such contests heading into the opener of its four-game road trip. Marc-Andre Fleury turned aside all 34 shots he faced in Saturday's 3-0 triumph over Carolina to record his 50th career shutout, although the three-time Stanley Cup winner is just 2-3-0 with a 2.81 goals-against average on the road.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain (Vegas), TSN4 (Toronto)

ABOUT THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS (6-7-1): Erik Haula notched a two-assist performance for the second time in four games on Saturday and had a goal and an assist as Vegas split its season series with Toronto in 2017-18. Fellow forward William Karlsson tallied three times and set up another goal in the Golden Knights' 6-3 romp over the Maple Leafs on New Year's Eve. The 25-year-old Swede has yet to find the back of the net on the road this season, although he does have five of his team co-leading seven assists away from T-Mobile Arena.

ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAFS (9-5-0): Morgan Rielly tallied twice against the Penguins to take the lead among all NHL defensemen in goals (six) and points (18) this season. The 24-year-old already has matched his goal total from last season - in 62 fewer games, no less - and hopes his good fortune on the road translates to the rest of his team at home. "We feel good about the road, but it's time we assert ourselves in our own building," Rielly told reporters.

OVERTIME

1. Vegas RW Ryan Reaves has scored four goals in his last seven games after failing to notch a point in each of his previous seven contests.

2. Toronto C Mitch Marner has seven assists in his last six contests.

3. Golden Knights D Shea Theodore is riding a three-game assist streak.

Edmonton Oilers vs. Tampa Bay Lightning Preview and Predictions 11-06-2018

NHL Predictions 6th November 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 11/06/2018

Two of last season's three 100-point scorers will be on display when the improving Edmonton Oilers visit the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday for a high-octane battle. Edmonton captain Connor McDavid is well on his way to a third-straight 100-point campaign with 21 and Tampa Bay's Nikita Kucherov is averaging a point per game in the early going for the Eastern Conference-leading Lightning.

Tampa Bay became the first team in the East to reach 10 wins on Sunday, when it tied the game with 33 seconds remaining and won it on Yanni Gourde's goal 14 ticks into overtime for a 4-3 victory at Ottawa. "I really thought our guys chipped away, and it did not come easy," Lightning coach Jon Cooper told reporters after his team recorded a 37-12 advantage in shots over the last two periods and the extra session. "They had to continue to work, obviously all the way to the very end, but the group has showed that this year with us, and I thought they deserved the two points." Edmonton earned a point in six of seven games (5-1-1) before dropping a 4-2 decision at Washington on Monday as has split the first two contests of its four-game road trip that concludes at Florida on Thursday. McDavid scored his 10th goal in Monday's loss, giving him six tallies and five assists during his eight-game point streak.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network, Sportsnet West (Edmonton)

ABOUT THE OILERS (8-5-1): Ryan Nugent-Hopkins set up both goals on Monday and ranks second on the team with 16 points - trailing only McDavid (22), who is second in the league behind Colorado's Mikko Rantanen (24). Leon Draisaitl scored his eighth goal in the setback for Edmonton, which has gotten unexpectedly big production from Alex Chiasson (six goals) and Drake Caggiula (five). Ty Rattie (abdomen) could return to the lineup on Tuesday, with underachieving forwards Jesse Puljujarvi (one goal) and Ryan Strome (zero points) being candidates to sit out if he does.

ABOUT THE LIGHTNING (10-3-1): Rookie Mathieu Joseph, who has impressed with speed and grit to earn a consistent spot in the lineup, scored his first NHL goal Sunday in his 14th game. "You can see on the bench, everyone is excited for him," captain Steven Stamkos told reporters. "When you're in a stretch like that, you just keep going and, eventually, one will go in. It's even more special coming in the win." Brayden Point recorded the tying goal and set up the winner Sunday to push his team-leading point total to 17 - eight of which have come in the last four contests.

OVERTIME

1. Edmonton RW Tobias Rieder, who has notched seven assists in his first season with the team, has not scored in 18 straight games - including playoffs.

2. Tampa Bay G Andrei Vasilevskiy is tied for the league lead with seven wins and among the leaders with a 1.98 goals-against average.

3. The home team has won each of the last five meetings while the Lightning are 5-1-1 in the last seven matchups.

New Jersey Devils vs. Ottawa Senators Preview and Predictions 11-06-2018

NHL Predictions 5th November 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 11/05/2018

The New Jersey Devils earned a much-needed two points last time out and look to conclude their first set of back-to-back games of the campaign with a pair of victories when they visit the struggling Ottawa Senators on Tuesday. Brian Boyle recorded his first career hat trick as the Devils won 5-1 at Pittsburgh on Monday after dropping six of their previous seven contests (1-5-1).

Defenseman Will Butcher registered a season-high three points in the triumph for New Jersey, which had been outscored 15-6 while losing its previous three contests, and captain Andy Greene blocked four shots while making his 800th NHL appearance. The Senators, who have earned at least one point in their last six matchups (4-0-2) against the Devils, have faded since a strong start to the season - registering just one win in their last seven contests (1-4-2) after a dispiriting 4-3 overtime loss to Tampa Bay on Sunday. Ottawa surrendered a goal with 33 seconds left in regulation against the Eastern Conference-leading Lightning before giving up the winner just 14 ticks into the extra session. "As a group, collectively, we've got to take some ownership for our play and our results," Senators defenseman Mark Borowiecki told reporters. "It's been a few too many years here for us where the players haven't taken ownership. ... We're going through a rough patch here, and this is where it's a true test of our personalities and a true test of the group we have in here."

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, MSG Plus (New Jersey), TSN5, RDS2 (Ottawa)

ABOUT THE DEVILS (6-5-1): Kyle Palmieri set up a goal to increase his team-leading total to 15 points while reigning Hart Trophy winner Taylor Hall notched his team-best 12th assist in Monday's victory. Former third-round pick Joey Anderson recorded his first NHL point with an assist in his third game and Marcus Johansson registered his 200th career assist. Keith Kinkaid made 35 saves to post his sixth win of the season on Monday, which could give Cory Schneider (0-1-0, 3.24 goals-against average, .913 save percentage) the crease in Ottawa, but coach John Hynes reportedly has not committed to a starter.

ABOUT THE SENATORS (5-6-3): Ottawa has yielded at least four goals in six of its last seven contests after recording three straight victories and is last in the league in goals allowed at 4.21 per game. Defenseman Thomas Chabot has collected four assists in his last three contests to push his team-leading total to 17 points and Mark Stone (99 career goals) has set up five goals in the same span to rank second with 13. Ottawa's defense corps is averaging one goal per game and rookie blue-liner Maxime Lajoie scored on Sunday to pull even with Ryan Dzingel for the team lead with five tallies.

OVERTIME

1. Ottawa LW Mikkel Boedker has recorded an assist in three straight contests after enduring a four-game point drought.

2. New Jersey C Travis Zajac is one assist shy of 300 for his career.

3. The Senators are 4-for-9 on the power play over their last three games and ranked fifth in the league (27.3 percent) through Sunday.

PREDICTION: Devils 4, Senators 3

Vancouver Canucks vs. Detroit Red Wings Preview and Predictions 11-06-2018

NHL Predictions 5th November 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 11/05/2018

The Sedin twins were the face of the Canucks franchise for 18 seasons before retiring but starstruck Vancouver fans aren't seeing double anymore thanks to 19-year-old rookie Elias Pettersson. The fifth overall pick in the 2017 draft hopes to continue his fast start - nine goals in nine games - when the Canucks kick off their second six-game road trip of the season Tuesday against the Detroit Red Wings.

Pettersson, who like Henrik and Daniel Sedin hails from Sweden, became the youngest Vancouver player to record five points in a game when he had two goals and three assists in Friday's 7-6 overtime victory over Colorado. "We knew he was supposed to be a pretty good player. And he's been all of that," Canucks coach Travis Green told reporters about the 6-2, 165-pound Pettersson, who was named the NHL's Second Star of the Week on Monday and has 15 points despite missing six games with a concussion. Pettersson needed only 23 shots to become the 16th player in NHL history with at least nine goals in his first nine games and only the sixth after the league's inaugural season. Detroit is coming off a 4-3 loss to Edmonton on Saturday that snapped a three-game winning streak after a 1-7-2 start.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, Sportsnet Pacific (Vancouver), FS Detroit

ABOUT THE CANUCKS (9-6-0): Brock Boeser, a Calder Trophy finalist after scoring 29 goals in 62 games last season, had two goals and two assists Friday and owns four goals along with 11 points in 2018-19 while skating on a line with Pettersson. Defenseman Christopher Tanev (minus-4, 21:27 ice time per game) has missed the last five contests with a hip bone bruise but made the trip and could play Tuesday. Jacob Markstrom (6-3-0, 3.27 goals-against average, .899 save percentage) has allowed five or more goals in four games this season, winning for the first time in such contests Friday, and a total of nine in the other five contests.

ABOUT THE RED WINGS (4-8-2): Dylan Larkin leads the team with six goals and 15 points after scoring twice and recording six assists during a four-game point streak. The Red Wings are thin up front as Frans Nielsen and Andreas Athanasiou missed their third straight games Saturday with undisclosed injuries while Thomas Vanek (lower body) has been out for two contests. Tyler Bertuzzi (five goals) has scored in three of his last four games while 11 of Gustav Nyquist's 12 points are assists.

OVERTIME

1. Pettersson set a Vancouver record for points in a regular-season game by a rookie Saturday and eclipsed the previous mark for youngest to score five points in franchise history set by 20-year-old Trevor Linden in the 1990-91 season.

2. Detroit D Jonathan Ericsson, who missed the first seven games of the season with an upper-body injury, did not play Saturday (undisclosed).

3. The Red Wings have won three of the last four meetings with the road team winning the past three encounters.

Carolina Hurricanes vs. St. Louis Blues Preview and Predictions 11-06-2018

NHL Predictions 5th November 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 11/05/2018

The Carolina Hurricanes opened the season with a flourish, erupting for 22 goals in their first five games (4-0-1) before mustering just 16 during their current 2-6-1 slide. The Hurricanes aim to end a four-game losing skid on Tuesday when they play the third contest of their four-game road trip against the St. Louis Blues.

"You can feel sorry about yourself and hang your head, but nobody cares about that," Carolina coach Rod Brind'Amour told reporters. "We're going to get back to work and keep trying to get better. That's the only thing you can do." Sebastian Aho was held off the scoresheet for the second consecutive contest in Saturday's 3-0 setback versus Vegas after starting the season with a 12-game point streak (four goals, 13 assists) for the Hurricanes, who mustered just three goals in a pair of losses to the Blues in 2017-18. St. Louis had been keeping scoreboard operators busy with 24 tallies in their previous five games (3-1-1) before dropping a 5-1 decision to Minnesota on Saturday. "We were trending, we were going in the right direction, but we laid an egg there (Saturday). Let's not kid ourselves. That was a bad one," Blues coach Mike Yeo told reporters. "Now where are we after that? That's what I'm anxious to see (in Tuesday's) game. Are we still trending in the right direction or are we starting at ground zero again?"

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FS Carolinas, FS Midwest (St. Louis)

ABOUT THE HURRICANES (6-6-2): Carolina's goaltender carousel is expected to turn to either Scott Darling or Curtis McElhinney after fellow netminder Petr Mrazek was unable to practice on Monday due to the lower-body injury he sustained during Friday's 4-3 overtime loss at Arizona. "I just talked to (Mrazek), and he said he's feeling better," Brind'Amour told the media. "I know Petr is not ready to play, but the other two guys are." Darling has yielded three goals in losses to both Boston (Oct. 30) and Vegas while McElhinney owns a 3-1-0 mark - although his last game action came on Oct. 20 in a 3-1 setback against Colorado.

ABOUT THE BLUES (4-5-3): Ryan O'Reilly tallied against the Wild to give him four goals and eight assists during his seven-game point streak, which is one shy of matching his career best that he set on two different occasions. Vladimir Tarasenko set up O'Reilly on Saturday to give him four goals and one assist in the first four contests of the season-high seven-game homestand. The 26-year-old Russian has also recorded at least one point in four straight encounters with Carolina, registering one goal and four assists in the span.

OVERTIME

1. St. Louis has scored a power-play goal in five consecutive contests and 10 of 12 games this season.

2. Carolina captain RW Justin Williams has just two points (two assists) in his last nine outings.

3. Yeo told reporters that Blues C Brayden Schenn did not practice on Monday due to soreness in his upper body and is questionable to play versus the Hurricanes.

Wild vs. Sharks Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 11/05/2018

The surging Minnesota Wild try for their seventh straight victory over San Jose when they visit the Sharks on Tuesday. Minnesota has won seven of its last eight games, including a 5-1 victory against the Blues on Saturday that made the Wild 2-1-0 on a franchise-record seven-game road trip which continues with three in California and concludes with a return trip to St. Louis on Sunday.

"That was about as good of a team win as I think we've had all season," Wild center Eric Staal told reporters after scoring his 400th career goal. "We will try to continue this on the road (this) week." San Jose improved to 1-1-1 on its four-game homestand with a 4-3 victory over Philadelphia on Saturday on Timo Meier's overtime goal - his second of the game. "He's been great," Sharks coach Pete DeBoer told reporters about Meier, who has a club-most 11 goals this season and eight in his last seven games. "Thankfully he's off to the start he's off to. We need him. We needed somebody to step up." Minnesota has swept San Jose in the last two season series with Staal recording four tallies in each three-game set.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, FS North (Minnesota), NBCS California (San Jose)

ABOUT THE WILD (8-3-2): After beginning the season with three blank scoresheets, Mikael Granlund has unleashed a 10-game point streak with six goals and seven assists. Nick Seeler scored his first career goal and added two assists Saturday in his 35th NHL game, telling reporters: "It's nice to have that first one go in." Devan Dubnyk (6-2-2, 2.07 goals-against average, .937 save percentage) has yielded two or fewer goals in seven games and is 10-8-2, 2.89, .909 in his career versus the Sharks.

ABOUT THE SHARKS (7-4-3): Joe Thornton scored his first goal of the season Saturday in his third game since missing nine with an infection in his right knee, telling reporters: "I feel better. There are periods I feel great and times not so good. It's starting to come. It's a work in progress." Tomas Hertl (five goals, 14 points) left Saturday's game with a head injury and is questionable to play Tuesday. Brent Burns (397 career assists) leads the team with 13 assists and, like Meier and Logan Couture (five goals, seven assists during a nine-game point streak), has a club-high 16 points.

OVERTIME

1. Thornton has 398 goals and 1,429 points - 16th all-time - in 1,498 games.

2. Minnesota LW Zach Parise (12 points this season) has scored three of his four goals on the road.

3. San Jose has the third-best penalty-killing unit in the NHL at 87.8 percent after going 21-for-21 in its last eight games while the Wild (18-for-20 in the last five contests) are fifth at 85.2 entering Monday.

Ducks vs. Kings Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 11/05/2018

Willie Desjardins has been summoned to light a fire under the Los Angeles Kings, who named the 61-year-old as the team's interim head coach after dismissing John Stevens on Sunday. The Kings look to put their best foot forward under their new bench boss on Tuesday when they continue their seven-game homestand against the Anaheim Ducks in the first Freeway Series matchup of the season.

"I want to see us play fast," Desjardins told reporters following Monday's practice. "I want to see us play with passion. I want us to be excited when we get to the rink. I want us to start each period quick. ... We want to find ways to win." Los Angeles answered six consecutive losses with victories in two of its last three, but a sputtering offense has registered league lows in goals scored (28) and tallies per game (2.15). Anaheim's offense isn't doing much better, as the Ducks reside 29th in goals per game (2.4) despite defenseman Cam Fowler recording his first career hat trick on Sunday as the club snapped a seven-game winless skid (0-5-2) with a 3-2 overtime victory over Columbus. "The main thing is our team found a way to win the game and kind of find a way to get off this losing streak," said the 26-year-old Fowler, who has three goals and two assists on his three-game point streak.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, Prime Ticket (Anaheim), FS West (Los Angeles)

ABOUT THE DUCKS (6-6-3): Captain Ryan Getzlaf (team high-tying eight assists) returned to practice on Monday, one day removed from sitting out his sixth contest of the season - this time with an upper-body injury. The 33-year-old Getzlaf could draw back in the lineup and carry a four-game point streak (two goals, five assists) into Tuesday's encounter versus the Kings, against whom he has collected 55 points (19 goals, 36 assists) in 68 career meetings. Goaltender John Gibson has also fared well versus Los Angeles, sporting a 9-3-0 mark with a 1.79 goals-against average and .935 save percentage in 13 appearances.

ABOUT THE KINGS (4-8-1): Ilya Kovalchuk and captain Anze Kopitar each carry a three-game point streak into Tuesday's tilt, with the former scoring two goals and setting up four others while the latter has one tally and two assists. While Kovalchuk has been playing in the Kontinental Hockey League for several seasons, Kopitar registered five points (two goals, three assists) in five meetings with Anaheim in 2017-18. Defenseman Drew Doughty, who leads the team with nine assists, set up a pair of goals for the second time in three outings during Saturday's 4-1 win over Columbus.

OVERTIME

1. Anaheim's Randy Carlyle (460) will move past the late Roger Neilson and into sole possession of 30th place in NHL history with his next victory.

2. Los Angeles C Jeff Carter has scored and set up a goal in back-to-back contests after being held off the scoresheet in eight of his previous 11 contests.

3. The Ducks have yielded the first goal in six consecutive games this season while the Kings had done so in eight straight before Saturday's outing.

PREDICTION: Ducks 4, Kings 1

#10 SKYDIGGER ANDY (ML=15/1)
#7 GOLDEN POINT (ML=4/1)
#3 RUBY'S LOVE (ML=8/1)

SKYDIGGER ANDY - This gelding is in excellent form right now. Ended up third in the last race and comes back quickly. GOLDEN POINT - Taking a trip down the ladder based on class rating points; has the ability to make his presence felt. Don't often see a positive ROI like +999. This jock/conditioner duo has done well together over the last 12 months. RUBY'S LOVE - A repeat of that most recent effort on Oct 17th where he registered a speed fig of 74 looks high enough to prove victorious in this event. This gelding is in fine condition. Finished second on Oct 17th. This gelding is most obviously on the improve with speed figures of 58, 61, 74 last three out.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 ALEXANDER THEGREAT (ML=5/2), #9 BEEFY (ML=5/1), #4 CAN'T CATCH ME NOW (ML=6/1),

ALEXANDER THEGREAT - This morning-line favorite hasn't visited the track in awhile. No morning drills since last race. BEEFY - Never really did much at all in the last race on August 28th. Hard to invest in in today's event. CAN'T CATCH ME NOW - This horse likes to be there at the wire, but doesn't usually win. Forget the top spot. Doesn't really look inspiring to me after the lack of any sort of closing talent on October 7th. Will be hard for this entrant to beat this field off of that last fig. Doubtful to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's class rating, so put him on the likely underpriced contenders list.

I've got to go with BETTER IN LEATHER. Could best this group here, showing strong figs of late. Could best this field based on the Equibase Speed Fig - 66 - of her last outing. Is tough not to consider given the company run in lately. IKNOWYOURFACE - Has run quite well when racing a dirt route race. Raudales has her trained very well to break rapidly out of the gate. ZOOMBADABOOM - This animal has a wonderful win percentage in dirt routes. This filly has posted some nice finishes in her last couple of efforts.

#5 GRAZEN HONOR (ML=8/1)

KAREN'S GEM - This race horse is in great demand coming off two claims in her last two starts. Don't overlook this filly in your investing today. Ran last time out against a better field at Belmont Park. The move down the class scale should suit her well. I like this filly. Has the highest earnings per race in here. GRAZEN HONOR - This jockey/trainer duo has been producing a very lucrative ROI, right at +267.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 NTH DEGREE (ML=3/2), #7 SWEET TURN (ML=2/1), #4 STETSON GOLD (ML=9/2),

NTH DEGREE - Couldn't make up any ground whatsoever on Oct 17th. Hard to bet on this time out at the expected odds. When checking today's class figure, she will have to notch a much better speed rating than in the last race to be competitive in this dirt sprint. SWEET TURN - Awfully hard to bet on this horse when she hasn't been showing any indications of eagerness recently. Hard to bet this one after not being near the lead at 1 mile and now being spotted in a race of 7 furlongs. STETSON GOLD - This filly hasn't had any recent accomplishments in sprint races. Difficult to bet on her in this race.

# 3 MR. MATLOCK 20/1

My pick in this contest is CIRCUS ACT. He looks very good in this slot and I expect will be on the front end or close at the midpoint. A solid 99 avg Equibase class figure may give this gelding a distinct class edge versus this group of horses. Vaunts sound speed figures on average overall when compared with the rest of this group. MESA SKYLINE - Has to be considered against this group of horses displaying quite good figures recently and an average Equibase speed fig of 77 under similar conditions. MR. MATLOCK - Is worth careful consideration and may be a bet - strong Equibase Speed Figs (83 average) at today's distance and surface recently.

Four tips and tactics to bet NCAA basketball betting odds like a sharp
Maddy Palmer

College basketball is back, putting one of the strangest betting options back on the board for sports bettors.

For the most part, the general public doesn’t start looking at NCAA hoops until January and even then, most don’t think about it until March Madness begins. That’s when everyone becomes an instant expert, with brackets and bets in hand.

College basketball is and will always be a market ruled by the sharps, but if you’re looking to jump into those shark-infested waters in November and December, here are some helpful tips and tactics to help you wager on college basketball like a wiseguy:

Tip No. 1: Narrow down your options

There are more than 350 Division 1 college programs taking the court this season, and there’s no way you can stay on top of them all. The best way to approach the season, especially in the first two months, is to focus on a few conferences you care about – whether that’s conference in your area or ones that house your Alma Mater. Slimming down your focus allows you to really dig into a select number of teams, and truly understand them on a game-to-game basis.

Tip No. 2: Size matters

Unlike college football, which only has 11 conferences and groupings, college basketball has 32 different conferences and leagues, from Power 5 groups like the ACC and Big Ten, to small mid-majors like the Northeast Conference and Patriot League.

Because there are so many teams, oddsmakers dedicate themselves to the big-name conference which draw the most betting action, leaving them exposed when it comes to small conference lines. That means that if you can become an expert in one of these mid-majors, you give yourself an advantage over the bookies. But keep in mind that some small conference games don’t get betting odds, so research your wagering options.

Tip No. 3: Take on totals

Ask any oddsmaker or bookie and they’ll tell you the one market they fear the most is college basketball totals. On top of setting spreads for more than 300 games a week, sportsbooks will offer totals on those contests as well. These numbers are often attacked by sharp bettors the second they hit the board and adjust quickly, so if you can jump on a steam move and get a good Over or Under number before it adjusts too far, you’re at least on the wise side of the total.

Tip No. 4: Find value in the futures

For the most part, the NCAA tournament futures odds look the same every season with perennial powerhouse programs like Duke, Kansas, Kentucky and North Carolina at the top of the board. And even as the season plays out, those odds stay relatively unchanged from week to week.

If you can spot a March Madness sleeper beyond those college basketball blue bloods, you’ll likely get a number of 10 to 1 or higher and set yourself up for a solid pay day once the tournament kicks off in mid-March.

Tuesday’s college hoop games— Not a lot of info to go on until teams play some games…….

Michigan State-Kansas split their last four meetings, all on neutral courts, with Jayhawks winning last one, 90-70 in 2nd round of 2017 NCAA’s. Spartans haven’t been to the Sweet 16 the last three years; they’re favored to win the Big 14, with three starters back from LY. Kansas won 95 games the last three years; they’ve got lot of new players, but lot of talent. Last three years, Big X schools are 18-13 vs spread (19-12 SU) when playing a Big 14 opponent.

Duke-Kentucky have met only twice in last decade, splitting the pair of early season games. Duke has five new starters, four of whom are supposed to be freshmen— talented kids, but who the hell knows? Blue Devils missed last three Final Fours. Kentucky took a trip to Bahamas in August, so they had 10 extra practices this summer; Wildcats do have three experienced starters, two of whom start. Last three years, SEC teams are 32-29 vs spread when playing an ACC opponent.

North Carolina is opening the season at Wofford, which is odd; Tar Heels were down 14 at home to Wofford with 13:28 left LY, but rallied to win 79-75, and Terriers shot just 7-22 from the arc. UNC has three starters back; they also got a couple of talented frosh who may be 1-and-done. Wofford has 8 of its top 9 scorers back from LY’s 21-13 team that played in the CIT; they’re a favorite in SoCon this year. Last three years, ACC teams are 19-15-2 vs spread when playing a SoCon squad, 1-2 when the game is on the SoCon team’s court.

Ball State-Indiana State split their last four meetings; Sycamores lost five of last seven trips to Muncie, splitting last four. ISU has had four straight losing seasons, but they add two transfers this year, from Butler/Iowa State, so that should help- they lost four OT games LY. Ball State won 61 games the last three years; they’ve got three starters back from LY. Cardinals shoot the 3’s well but need to be better defensively. Last three years, MVC teams are 13-8 vs spread when playing a MAC opponent.

Temple lost 87-83 at LaSalle LY, just their 2nd loss in last 13 series games; four of last five meetings were decided by 6 or fewer points. Owls have three starters back from LY for coach Dunphy’s last team (he is retiring); their top two scorers from LY are back. LaSalle has a new coach, a Villanova assistant; Explorers have decent guards but are weak up front- the new coach is a good recruiter, but that won’t help this year’s team. Last three years, AAC squads are 12-10-1 vs spread when playing an A-14 team.

Wichita State lost nine players from LY’s 25-8 team; they also lost two assistant coaches in the spring. Shockers are a very young team; it’ll take time for them to gel. Louisiana Tech has four starters back from LY’s 17-16 (7-11 in C-USA) team; Bulldogs they had lot of injuries LY, so lot of young kids got playing time, which should help this year, but they’ve got only one returning senior. Last two years, C-USA teams are 9-4 vs spread when playing an AAC opponent.

Cal State-Fullerton played two Pac-12 teams LY, losing to USC/Cal by 6-42 points; they went on to win Big West tourney and make NCAA’s, but Titans are guard-heavy- they lost their NCAA game to Purdue by 26. Fullerton has four starters back but brought in new guys to help out up front. Arizona State was last D-I team in country to lose LY, then went 8-12 in their last 20 games; ASU lost three starters but bring in talented newcomers. Last three years, Pac-12 teams are 25-24-1 vs spread when playing a Big West squad.

Auburn has couple senior guards who helped Tigers reach NCAA’s LY for first time since ’03; Purifoy is suspended for first nine games of season. Auburn has depth now and much higher expectations this year. South Alabama has a new coach and four starters back from LY; Nicholls State played fast under this coach the last two years- will the Jaguars? USA has a decent roster- they’ve got three transfers sitting out for next year, too. Last three years, SEC teams are 15-9 vs spread when playing a Sun Belt team.

Florida State beat Florida the last four years, beating Gators by 2-5 points in their last two visits here- four of last five series games were decided by 5 or fewer points. Seminoles have three starters back from a 23-12, Elite 8 team; they return 75% of their scoring, 76% of rebounding from LY. Florida made NCAA’s last two years, still has experience; they’ll need to defend better this year. Last three years, SEC teams are 32-29 vs spread when playing an ACC opponent.

San Francisco made 10-22 on arc, shot 55% inside arc and beat Cal-Davis 74-61 at home LY. Dons won 42 games the last two years; they’ve got three starters back from LY’s team that lost the CIT title game. USF is picked #4 in WCC this winter. Cal-Davis has a 5-9 senior PG who led the Aggies to the Big West regular season title. Davis’ backcourt is their strength. Last three years, Big West teams are 30-26 vs spread when playing WCC foes.

New Mexico won 105-89 at Cal-Northridge in a Wooden Classic game two years ago; both teams have new coaches since then. Lobos lost star transfer Lyle to injury; they lost four starters from LY’s 19-15 team that was 12-6 in MW. Jackson is a transfer G from UConn who they need to be good. CSUN won only 36 games the last four years; Gottfried is a good coach, but players win games and the Matadors don’t have enough good ones yet. Last three years, Mountain West teams are 15-12-1 vs spread when facing a Big West team.

Washington hammered Western Kentucky 86-47 in Vegas two years ago. WKU won 27 games LY, lost in NIT semis; they’ve got six players back with decent experience, and Stansbury is recruiting above his grade level. Hilltoppers also have transfers eligible from Auburn/Austin Peay. Washington plays a 2-3 zone like Syracuse which can be tricky to beat early in season; Huskies have their top eight players back from LY- they brought in a freshman, pass-first PG who figures to free up the other guards to score more.

Nevada is ranked in top 10 this year, which adds pressure; Wolf Pack beat two WCC teams LY, winning by 30-13 points. Nevada is 81-29 under Musselman; they’ve got three starters back from LY’s Sweet 16 team, plus talented newcomers. BYU has four starters back from a 24-11 team, but their leading scorer from LY bolted school early. Still, 7 of their top 8 scorers are back from LY. Cougars won 22+ games each of the last five years. Last three years, Mountain West teams are 22-18 vs spread when playing a WCC opponent.

2019-19 NCAA BK Betting Preview
Tony Mejia

Kentucky and Duke square off to start the season, so they can settle who the No. 1 team should be going forward on the floor. As for the preseason stance, here is our Top 25.

While they open in Indianapolis as the nightcap of a doubleheader featuring Kansas and Michigan State, every team in the country wants to end up in Minneapolis when all is said and done.

The following is a list of the top candidates to do so, complete with early line movement courtesy of futures odds via the Las Vegas Westgate SuperBook.

In forecasting March Madness, you have to adjust for a little crazy. Where’s the wacky coming from? Who will follow Sister Jean’s act into prominence? How’s her beloved school looking? I’ll list my Final Four at the bottom but have given myself a requirement to select two favorites, one longshot and one super longshot. I reserve the right to change my mind once games are played, but the fun in November college basketball is seeing where teams if teams pick up where they left off.

Favorites (Odds to win title)

Duke (4/1): The Blue Devils were at 9-to-2 to win it all last week and will probably catch a better return somewhere along the line. Maybe they'll have a slight skid come ACC play. Still, this is the preferred choice. The task to pick a favorite freshman will be a daunting one. R.J. Barrett is the most talented, Zion Williamson has the Shawn Kemp-type appeal and Cam Reddish may be the most fun to watch. They're all delightful. This is your national champion.

Gonzaga (10/1): The odds are juicier than the 7-to-1 they were at a few weeks ago since power forward Killian Tillie will miss two months with a stress fracture in his foot. As long as he's around to help Rui Hachimura come February and March, the Zags will be a threat to win it all. Consider North Dakota grad transfer Geno Crandall the x-factor. He's got some special to him and can really take some of the pressure off backcout mate Josh Perkins.

Kansas (6/1): The Jayhawks were at 8-to-1 before the AP poll came out and voters placed the No. 1 tag on them, but they've got a lot of moving parts and probably shouldn't have been burdened with the top ranking. The Lawson twins come over from Memphis, star freshmen make up the backcourt. Stud wing LaGerald Vick and 7-footer Udonna Azubuike are shooting to impress NBA scouts while showing the others the ropes. If everything clicks, they can be tremendous.

Kentucky (7/1): Five 'Cats from last year's group are currently on NBA rosters, but with Stanford transfer Reid Travis joining P.J. Washington and Nick Richards up front, John Calipari's squad should be fiercely physical. Quade Green hopes to show significant improvement, while freshmen Keldon Johnson, Ashton Hagans, Immanuel Quickley and Tyler Herro can all fill in as impressive glue guys. Hagans will alter big games with his defense.

Nevada (12/1): Eric Musselman returns the bulk of last year's group, led by the Martin twins and wing Jordan Caroline. The Wolf Pack added Old Dominion transfer Trey Porter and Top-20 recruit Jordan Brown, both 6-foot-11, to bring an element they lacked last year, so don't write this team off as some flash-in-the-pan mid-major. They're going to be loaded.

North Carolina (8/1): It feels like Luke Maye has been at UNC forever and he'll have Pitt transfer Cameron Johnson around in addition to senior Kenny Williams to offer veteran help, so this group will be tough to beat. Roy Williams brought in a pair of potentially special freshmen in blur of a point guard Coby White and athletic wing Nassir Little, so there will be significant depth.

Longshots (Odds to win title)

Auburn (40/1): We'll finally get to see 7-footer Austin Wiley play, but it won't be right away. He's out with a foot injury and may be brought along slowly. Forward Danjel Purifoy also had to sit last season and will be sidelined for the first nine games, but adding two fantastic frontcourt pieces to the group Bruce Pearl led to 26 wins last season will make for a formidable group.

Indiana (30/1): The Hoosiers went from 200-to-1 to 40-to-1 and are now down even further due to all the talent Archie Miller has assembled on the roster. Freshman forward Romeo Langford has the best shot at becoming a household name and should be a one-and-done. It remains to be seen whether fellow freshman Robert Phenisee eventually takes over the point full-time but will start out sharing time with junior Devonte Green.

Kansas State (40/1): Bruce Weber got the Wildcats to the Elite Eight last March and returns all five starters, so rivalry games against KU will be must-see TV this season. Dean Wade, who wasn't part of the tourney run due to injury, puts the Wildcats over the top. This is a legitmate Top 10 team.

Michigan (30/1): After head coach John Beilein got heavily involved in the Pistons' hiring process, things could have looked a lot different than they do today. Versatile bigs Mo Wagner and Duncan Robinson are on NBA rosters, so there's more change on the way. Charles Matthews will have to improve on free-throws or he'll cost the Wolverines games in Big Ten play.

Michigan State (30/1): The Spartans lost Miles Bridges and Jaren Jackson, Jr. to the pros but will remain formidable so long as Cassius Winston is at the controls. He'll have freshman Michigan Mr. Basketball Foster Loyer to mentor and play alongside, while Nick Ward will get the bulk of the touches inside.

Oregon (20/1): Bol Bol looks like a beast, which is why the Ducks could win it all despite being relatively young. Dana Altman was fortunate to land Corpus Christi transfer Ehab Amin and Georgetown import Paul White to help add experience in the mix. Point guard Payton Pritchard will be the proverbial straw that stirs the drink and should flourish at a brisk pace. He's a winner.

Purdue (50/1): Top scorer Carsen Edwards returns, but the majority of last year's loaded group has graduated from the program. Edwards should lead the Big Ten in scoring as a result but needs to get help from Dartmouth transfer Evan Boudreaux and 7-foot-3 Matt Haarms up front to keep defenses from keying solely on him.

Syracuse (40/1): The Orange have moved from 50-to-1 and return last season's entire starting lineup thanks to Tyus Battle's last-minute decision to return for his junior year in order to improve his draft stock. The determined wing could make himself some bucks by improving his jumper and taking 'Cuse on a run deep into March.

Tennessee (25/1): With Grant Williams and Admiral Schofield leading the way, Rick Barnes has grown men in positions of power, which could swing the SEC his way and out of the grasp of usual suspects Kentucky and Florida.

Villanova (30/1): The top four Wildcats gone from last year's great group are already in the rotation of four separate NBA teams, so Jay Wright's team will be nowhere near as talented this season. The cupboard isn't entirely bare with Eric Paschall and Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree back up front and Phil Booth set to lead the team's backcourt efforts alongside Albany transfer Joe Cremo. Freshman Jahvon Quinerly will be the x-factor and could ultimately determine this team's ceiling.

Virginia (20/1): How does one overcome becoming the first No. 1 seed to lose to a 16 in the NCAA Tournament? We're about to find out. The loss of Deandre Hunter to a broken hand contributed to UVa's demise at the hands of UMBC, but he'll be back on the wing alongside guards Kyle Guy and Ty Jerome. Expect a bounce-back season.

West Virginia (30/1): Although the loss of Jevon Carter and Daxter Miles, Jr. hurts, wings James Bolden and Esa Ahmad have the opportunity to step up. It's on whoever is playing point to defend the way Carter did and establish an identity night after night. That's easier written than done.

Super Longshots (Odds to win title)

Florida (100/1): Mike White has topped 20 wins in each of his three seasons leading the Gators and has seniors Jalen Hudson, Kevaughn Allen and Kevarrius Hayes to lead the way. Canadian freshman x-factor Andrew Nembhard will step right into the starting lineup and could produce immediately.

Florida State (60/1): Although they'll have to overcome Leonard Hamilton's often brutal in-game coaching, the 'Noles return a number of key cogs from last year's Elite Eight squad. 7-foot-4 Christ Koumadje could be a game-changer come this year's Big Dance, forming an excellent veteran frontcourt alongside seniors Terance Mann and Phil Cofer.

Loyola-Chicago (300/1): How can the Ramblers follow up a 32-win season and Final Four trip? Winning the Horizon League seems like the most realistic expectations given the departure of a few key regulars, but head coach Porter Moser returns point guard Clayton Custer and big man Cameron Krutwig, so they may not take too large a step backward.

Mississippi State (100/1): Ben Howland's Bulldogs have four starters back and will be paced by junior point guard Lamar Peters, the Weatherspoon brothers and senior big man Aric Holman.

Texas Tech (60/1): Head coach Chris Beard simply finds ways to win, but he's got a massive undertaking ahead of him in attempting to replace Keenan Evans, Zhaire Smith and Zach Smith. Transfers Tariq Owens (St. John's) and Matt Mooney (South Dakota) will team with sophomore wing Jarrett Curlver and freshman guard Kyler Edwards to try to keep the success going in Lubbock.

Texas (80/1): Shaka Smart couldn't win big with the likes of Mo Bamba and couldn't feel worse about it. He's got versatile big man Dylan Osetowski available to lead this year's group but will have to do the coaching job of his career to be a significan tourney threat come March.

UCLA (100/1): The Bruins opened at 30/1 but have taken a hit with forward Cody Riley sidelined three weeks after running into 7-foot freshman Moses Brown. We'll see if the backcourt of Jaylen Hands and Prince Ali can be effective without first-round pick Aaron Holiday leading the charge.

UCF (200/1): Head coach Johnny Dawkins has his son Aubrey in the mix after an injured shoulder ended his season prematurely last year. 7-foot-6 center Tacko Fall is also back and will try to improve enough to land an NBA deal. He'll serve as the backbone of a UCF squad that should win the American.

USC (200/1): This is Bennie Boatwright's team, for better or worse. An ill-timed knee injury that required surgery is the lone reason he didn't leave for the pros, so Andy Enfield has to help Boatwright remain focused on making the best of a setback. The Trojans added a few key transfers to help the team become competitive.

Virginia Tech (60/1): Buzz Williams has a deep team at his disposal, but did lose a top scorer and go-to guy who must be replaced. Fortunately, the Hokies are deep and talented, which should assist them in pushing tempo and identifying the backbone for this group.

Wichita State (100/1): The Shockers were at 40-to-1 but had their odds adjusted and will likely struggle with Landry Shamet off playing for the 76ers and other key cogs done with their eligibility. Gregg Marshall doesn't lose often, so look for him to figure out the right way to play around transfer forward Markis McDuffie.

Final Four: Duke, Nevada, Auburn, Florida

Inside the Paint - Tuesday
Chris David

Game of the Night (10:05 p.m. ET)
Milwaukee (8-1 SU, 6-3 ATS) at Portland (7-3 SU, 7-3 ATS)

All eyes will be on the Moda Center on Tuesday as the Trail Blazers host the Bucks in a matchup of talented yet overlooked clubs. Portland enters this game with the third best record in the Western Conference while Milwaukee is second in the East behind a league-leading point differential of 15.8 points per game.

BookMaker.eu opened Portland as a one-point home favorite and the line has flipped to Milwaukee -1 at some betting shops in what’s expected to be a tight game. The Trail Blazers have gone 4-2 both SU and ATS at home this season and that includes a 111-81 win over Minnesota as a six-point favorite this past Sunday.

The Bucks didn’t get caught looking ahead to this matchup either as they pasted Sacramento 144-109 as 10-point home favorites on Sunday afternoon. The win came after Milwaukee dropped its first game of the season last Thursday, a 117-113 close call against the Celtics from TD Garden. This will be the fourth road game of the season for the Bucks, who are 2-1 SU and 1-2 ATS on the road. If you believe the West is the more dominant conference, Milwaukee is 2-0 both SU and ATS in those non-conference matchups while Portland sits at 2-2 versus the East.

The Bucks have gotten the best of the Trail Blazers recently, winning four straight and six of the last seven matchups in this series. Last season, Milwaukee stole a 113-110 victory at home before winning 103-91 at the Moda Center. Tight games have been common as three of the six wins by the Bucks have come by three points or less during this span and Portland’s goal should be to stay within reach tonight.

As noted above, the Bucks point-differential is off the charts right now and Milwaukee has only played in two games decided by single digits this season. And they went 1-1 SU and 0-2 ATS in those games.

The reason for Milwaukee’s success is scoring, which has gone from 106.1 PPG to 121.9 PPG. The team is shooting 37.9 percent from 3-point land while taking 41 attempts from distance, one of only two clubs in the NBA to shoot 40-plus bombs a game. They just set a franchise record for most 3-pointers made in a game with a 22-of-56 effort against the Kings on Sunday.

Head coach Mike Budenholzer loves the ‘bombs away’ style and some of you may have forgotten but he did lead Atlanta to 60 wins and a top seed in the East in the 2014-15 season. While that Hawks squad was solid with four All-Stars, this Bucks team has a superstar in Giannis Antetokounmpo (26.1 PPG, 13.9 RPG, 5.9 APG) and an underrated group of players.

After tonight, the Bucks will get tested again on Thursday as they meet Golden State in the Bay Area. Portland has a couple more home games on deck (Clippers, Celtics) before they begin a six-game road trip which will feature a rematch against Milwaukee on Nov. 21.

Charlotte Chalk

The largest spread on the board Tuesday takes place from the Spectrum Center in North Carolina when Charlotte (5-5 SU, 7-3 ATS) hosts Atlanta (3-6 SU, 3-6 ATS) in a Southeast Division matchup. The Hornets opened as 11-point favorites and while the line may seem a tad high, you can make a strong case for the favorite in this spot. Charlotte cleans up on weaker teams and it’s record as a favorite (4-2 SU, 4-2 ATS) has been solid, plus all four of those wins came by double digits. At home, the Hornets have notched wins versus the Bulls, Heat and Cavaliers while coming up short to the Bucks and Thunder which goes back to my ‘bully’ status on them.

The Hawks live and die from distance and you better hope they shoot a good percentage if you’re taking the points. Atlanta enters this game off a 123-118 win over Miami last Saturday as a 5 ½-point home underdog and it has captured back-to-back wins once this season. Again, you need Atlanta to score if you bet on the club knowing they’re allowing 120.2 PPG and that’s the third worst in the league. For what it’s worth, the spread hasn’t mattered in Hawks games this season. When they lose, they get run out of the building while all three of the wins were outright as ‘dogs.

Before placing a buy order on Atlanta money-line (+550), make a note that Charlotte swept the season series (4-0 SU, 4-0 ATS) last season and is 8-2 in the last 10 encounters and the last five wins in Charlotte came by an average of 14.2 PPG.

Pick your Poison

The other two games on Tuesday are tough to figure out and it seems like the oddsmakers just flipped a coin to see who should be favored.

Washington (2-7 SU, 2-7 ATS) at Dallas (2-7 SU, 5-4 ATS)

The recent history between this pair makes you do a double-take knowing Dallas has won 17 of the past 20 meetings (13-7 ATS) against Washington and that includes two blowout wins last season (113-99, 98-75). Dallas would love to keep the domination going since it enters Tuesday’s contest on a six-game losing skid. The Mavericks have had plenty of time to work on things with their last loss coming on Friday to the Knicks (118-106) at home.

Coincidentally, Washington just snapped a five-game losing streak on Sunday to New York with a 108-95 victory as a 6 ½-point home favorite. It was the best defensive effort of the season for the Wizards, who are currently listed as the worst defensive team (120.7 PPG) in the league. Washington is clearly the more talented team on paper and even though head coach Scott Brooks has faced early heat, the Wizards have played a tough schedule (ranked 7th) which started with a five-game road trip in the second week of the season.

Oddsmakers opened a healthy total (225 ½) on this matchup and despite not being great shooting clubs, neither is afraid to host from deep. Dallas and Washington both enter this game with 6-3 ‘over’ marks.

Brooklyn (4-6 SU, 5-5 ATS) at Phoenix (2-7 SU, 4-5 ATS)

The Suns haven’t been listed as favorites this season, the only team in the NBA not to lay points, and I’m not sure if they’ll receive enough attention to close in that role on Tuesday. Phoenix just won its second game of the season on Sunday, a 102-100 triumph over Memphis as a four-point home underdog. After its first win, they got clobbered by 28 in their next game so confidence shouldn’t be too high on Phoenix again.

The Suns are playing a Brooklyn team that does have confidence, winners in two of their last three games and that includes a 122-97 blowout win over Philadelphia on Sunday as a four-point home underdog as well. Just by looking at the lines for the Nets, you can see the oddsmakers have given them more respect this season at home but not as much on the road – point in case with tonight’s line. I agree with the pick ‘em opener especially with Brooklyn’s poor road record (1-4 SU, 3-2 ATS). The Nets also haven’t been as effective offensively (105 PPG) away from the Barclays Center. Similar to so many teams in the NBA these days, Brooklyn relies so much on the production of its outside shot.

The pair split last season but the Nets have won and covered five of the six meetings and that includes a run of three consecutive wins in the desert at Talking Stick Resort Arena.

This weeks NHL betting predictions and picks: Vegas' magic evaporated on road

The Golden Knights haven't had the same magic they did last season, especially on the road. Things won't get any easier when they visit the Maple Leafs on Tuesday night. We cover this game and much more in our NHL betting cheat sheet with need-to-know betting notes, goalie profiles and injury news to help you crack the NHL odds for the early week matchups.

VEGAS ROAD SHOW

The Vegas Golden Knights have been terrible on the road this season, going just 2-5 in their first seven contests away from home with a -10-goal differential and face one of the league’s best home teams in the Toronto Maple Leafs Tuesday. Toronto is still loaded offensively even without Auston Matthews and they’ve been dominant against Western Conference opponents with an 11-4 mark in their last 15 games. The magic seems to be gone from the Golden Knights and on the road, they look pedestrian at best. Take the Leafs at home at a reasonable price.

SINGING THE BLUES

The St. Louis Blues and Carolina Hurricanes are both in the midst of an early season swoon. While both teams need to focus on their defensive shortcomings, it leaves bettors in a nice position with the total as there is plenty of evidence to support another Over in this one. The Over is 5-0 in the last five for St. Louis and is 4-0 for the Hurricanes against a team with a losing record. Jake Allen and Scott Darling are expected to start in goal for their respective teams and both goaltenders have a sub .900 save percentage with a goals against average over 3.00. Take the Over on Tuesday night in St. Louis.

SPECIAL TEAMS

The Sharks offense deserves a better fate as they rank 10th in the NHL in goals for but are in second in total shots per game as they continue to pepper opposing goaltenders. Minnesota meanwhile is 14th in shots per game and goals per game but on average they give up the 10th most shots per contest. Expect the goaltenders to be busy in their matchup as both teams have a knack for getting the puck towards goal and that’s a good sign for Over bettors. The Over is 4-0 in the last four meetings between these two teams in San Jose and Tuesday night adds to that trend.

EXTRA ATTACKERS

The Oilers and Lightning meet up on Tuesday night as Connor McDavid and Steven Stamkos face off in Florida in a game many are expecting to go Over the number. The Oilers are hoping they can take advantage on the power play against a Lightning side that rarely gives up goals in bunches, but they’ll have to solve the leagues second best penalty killing unit. Edmonton is 20th in the NHL in goals for and while Tampa sits fourth in the league they will have to contend with Mikko Koskinen who has been playing ridiculously well of late for the Oilers. Stay conscious of special teams when wagering on this one.

GOALIE PROFILE

Mikko Koskinen, Edmonton Oilers: Speaking of Koskinen, the 2009 Islanders draft pick is enjoying a resurgence with the Oilers after spending most of his career in the KHL. The Finnish national has been excellent playing in Russia as he has never had a GAA over 2.42 and while competition in the KHL is not at the level of the NHL it is still quite impressive. Koskinen is 3-0 for Edmonton and faces off with Andrei Vasilevskiy of Tampa Bay who has been exceptional since the beginning of last season. The Under is 6-2 in the last eight meetings between these two teams and Tuesday night is no different.

INJURY UPDATE

The Canucks are expected to be without of their best players in Brock Boeser on Tuesday as he suffered a groin injury in Colorado over the weekend. Boeser has 11 points so far this season and that greatly hurts the offense of the Canucks who are currently ranked 11th in the NHL in goals for. The Wings meanwhile have the 25th ranked offense in the NHL and have trouble scoring against everyone which makes this a candidate for the Under.

HAT TRICK TRENDS

The Oilers are winless in last six against Tampa Bay and the home team is 13-3 in last 16 meetings.
The Road team is 5-1 in last six meetings between Vancouver and Detroit. The Red Wings are 0-7 in last seven vs Pacific division opponents.
The Under is 9-0 in Toronto’s last nine games overall and 8-2 in Vegas’ last 10.

So we have a great match up here on opening night for college basketball. I will take Sparty here tonight as a dog at this price on a neutral court. Sure they lost some talent, but they always replace with great recruits that fit his system. They still have 3 returning starters and I love Winston who will run the show and I think he will be the X Factor tonight that gives them a chance to win this game.
Everyone is making a big deal of Kansas being ranked #1 and bringing in all these transfers. While I do think they obviously have a good team it's tough for some of these new kids to step in and accept different roles especially when its game time.
Talent the edge goes to Kansas, Coaching big edge to Izzo. Take Sparty and the points tonight

1* FREE Pick on Wisconsin-Milwaukee +17
I like the value here with Wisconsin-Milwaukee as a big road dog against the Eagles. Boston College has come a long way in the last few years, but are still a work in progress. A few years ago they didn't win a single game in the ACC. Last year they won 7 and made the NIT.
With 4 starters back, I think this team is getting some love and people will see this as a short number to lay. I would much rather have the dog in this fight. The one starter the Eagles didn't bring back was 1st round NBA pick Jerome Robinson, who averaged just over 20 ppg. Putting up points will be a lot harder for this team without him around.
The Panthers have been a good program to back away from home as a dog, as they have covered 58% (118-85) as road underdog going back to 1997. Take Wisconsin-Milwaukee!

The Cavaliers begin their campaign with Towson on Tuesday night. The Tigers lost three senior starters and are looking to reload with youth and transfers. They are woefully undersized as well which doesn't play well against the Cavaliers. UVA will be playing with a chip on their shoulder. This is a team that clamps down on offenses and cover a lot of their big numbers. They are 20-9-1 in their last 30 games against the spread and 7-2 ATS in their last nine non-conference games. I don't like the Tigers chances to keep this close.

This line has climbed from its opener, enough that I feel we're now getting solid value with the underdog. Keep in mind that the Quakers made it to the NCAA Tournament last season, the first time in a decade. Coach Donahue had this to say: "With a veteran group that we have coming back, I think we'll be ready to compete and execute." Consider grabbing the points with PENN.

The Atlanta Hawks have been an OVER team this season. They are 6-3 OVER and scoring 111 PPG while giving up over 120 PPG. The Hornets have certainly improved dramatically on offense this season at nearly 116 PPG. They are giving up 108 PPG on defense. Recent meetings in this series suggest the OVER is a good bet as well since the OVER is 3-0 in the last three meetings with an average score of 236.7 PPG and a low of 231 points. The OVER is 5-1 in Hawks last six road games. The OVER is 16-6-1 in Hornets last 23 home games. Give me the OVER.

SIM grading and Recommended Strategy
Place a 5-star wager (5,7, or 10-Star grading) on Charlotte, who is currently priced as a 10.5-point home favorite.
SIM Projections and Results
Projection summary calls for Charlotte to score more between 112 and 120 points, have 12 or fewer turnovers, and will have a minimum advantage of 8 more total rebounds. Atlanta is just 9-29 ATS (-22.9 Units) when they allow 112 or more points in a game over the last 2 seasons; 6-19 ATS (-14.9 Units) when they allow 117 or more points in a game over the last 2 seasons. Charlotte is 25-10 ATS (+14.0 Units) when they score 112 or more points in a game over the last 2 seasons; 20-4 ATS (+15.6 Units) when they score 117 or more points in a game over the last 2 seasons.
In games where 112 to 120 points were scored, had 12 or fewer turnovers, and had a minimum rebounding edge of at least 8 boards, the Hornets are a perfect 6-0 ATS.

The following database situational query has produced a 66-29 ATS mark good for 70% winners since 1996. Play on home favorites off a home blowout win by 20 points or more and is now facing an opponent off an home win scoring 110 or more points.

My money is on the Owls to easily win here at home by double-digits against La Salle. Temple was a lot better than their 17-16 record a year ago and will be bringing back their top two scorers in Quinton Rose and Shizz Alston Jr. This is also a special season for the Owls, as head coach Fran Dunphy has announced it will be his last. Expect the players to play extra hard for him, as they want to at least send him out with an NCAA Tournament bid. It starts by taking care of the Explorers, who figure to have a tough time improving on last year's 13-19 record, given they lost B.J. Johnson, who averaged 20.8 ppg and 8.3 rpg. Bet Temple -8.5!

Scott "The Bulldog" Rickenbach NHL Game #61 Tuesday Free Pick OVER the total in Tampa Bay Lightning vs Edmonton Oilers @ 7:35 ET - No matter how hard you work, there are good breaks and bad breaks in sports betting that come with the territory. The key to long-term success is that you overall make strong plays and understand that the breaks (both good and bad) will even out in the long run. Why the intro here? Because I certainly had one that fell into the "bad break" category with the Edmonton Over yesterday. The Oilers and Capitals combined for 6 goals in the first two periods and then went scoreless in the 3rd to hand me a very tough push with a top play. As noted above, it is part of the business. Now, as a result, I won't hesitate to come right back with the Oilers Over again today! The over is 3-0 in Edmonton's Tuesday games this season. The over is 20-10 in Tampa Bay's Tuesday games the past 2+ seasons. The Lightning have scored an average of 4 goals per game their last dozen games. The Oilers had scored an average of 4 goals per game their last 7 games prior to being held to just 2 goals at Washington last night. Both the Bolts and Edmonton have been strong on the power play this season but the Oilers penalty kill has struggled. Look for plenty of goals in this one. Free Pick OVER the total in Tampa Bay

Game# 61-62
Play On: Under 6.0
Edmonton will be playing in its 3rd road game in 4 days. The Oilers will go with backup goaltender Mikko Koskinen for today’s game. However, Koskinen has been brilliant in his 3 starts this season while posting an outstanding .935 save percentage. Edmonton has compiled a respectable win percentage of .571 through its first 14 games of the season.
Tampa Bay is once again expected to go with #1 goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy on Tuesday. Vasilevskiy has posted a stellar .935 save percentage this season during 10 starts and 7 of those games went under the total. Tampa Bay is currently averaging 3.6 goals scored per game. Nevertheless, Edmonton has gone 27-13 (68%) under the total in road games during the past 2 seasons when facing teams that average 3.0 or more goals scored per game.
Any NHL team with a total of 3.0 or more that’s playing in its 3rd road game in 4 days during a first half of their season, and they possess a win percentage of .510 to .600, resulted in those games going 26-6 (81.2%) under the total since 1996.

NHL | Canucks vs Red Wings
Play on: Red Wings -104 at pinnacle

The set-up: Vancouver already has 18 points through 17 games, a surprise for sure after finishing with just 30 wins last year. But after a 7-6 win over the Avs, I think Vancouver stumbles in this difficult East Coast road venue. The Red Wings will look to take advantage of a contented Canucks side and to get back on track after their three-game win streak was snapped in a tight 4-3 setback to the Oilers most recently.
The pick: Note that the Canucks have been downright terrible in this spot, going just 8-28 (-19.3 units) in their last 36 after playing three consecutive home games. I think the Wings are the correct call in this one.

NBA | Nets vs Suns
Play on: OVER 221 -103

Jack’s Free Pick Tuesday: Nets/Suns OVER 221
I expect a shootout tonight between two bad teams that play little defense in the Phoenix Suns and Brooklyn Nets. This total of 221 is too low in my opinion, so we’ll back the OVER as Tuesday’s free pick.
The Nets have actually been efficient on offense, scoring 109.9 points per game this season. But they are giving up 111.3 points per game on defense. The Suns have been even worse on that end, allowing 114.9 points per game on 50.7% shooting.
A big reason the Suns have been held in check offensively thus far is due to injuries, most notably to Devin Booker. But he’s back healthy now and should give them a big boost moving forward. He is one of the premier scorers in the NBA today.
The Nets and Suns have combined for 222 or more combined points in four of their last five meetings. That fact alone shows there’s value with the OVER tonight. The OVER is 5-0 in Nets last five vs. Western Conference opponents. The OVER is 22-9 in Suns last 31 games following a win. The OVER is 7-1 in the last eight meetings in Phoenix. Bet the OVER in this game Tuesday.

NBA | Nets vs Suns
Play on: Suns +1 +102 at 5Dimes

My free play is on the Pho Suns at 9:05 ET.
Devin Booker missed three games with a hamstring injury before returning for the Suns' Friday's loss against the Toronto Raptors. However, he looked "back on his game" on Sunday when he scored 25 points and hit the game-winning shot with 1.7 seconds remaining against the Grizzlies. Sunday's 102-100 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies ended Phoenix's seven-game slide. The 2-7 Suns will welcome the Brooklyn Nets to Phoenix tonight, a team which is a modest 4-6 but one which is coming off a strong performance in its 122-97 triumph over the Philadelphia 76ers on Sunday.
This game in Phoenix begins a stretch in which the Nets will play four straight and seven of nine on the road. Forward Rondae Hollis-Jefferson (9.9 & 5.9) enjoyed his top offensive performance of the season against Philadelphia by scoring 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting, leading the way along with D'Angelo Russell (15.4), who also had 21. Shooting guard Caris LeVert had points in the win and has now scored 20 or more points in back-to-back games and six times overall this season (he's averaging 20.0 PPG).
Booker (25.7 PPG) had 14 points in the fourth quarter Sunday and may have found a new running mate in rookie small forward Mikal Bridges, who has played more than 20 minutes in four of the past five games and is carving himself a role while impressing his teammates. Let's NOT forget the No. 1 pick in the last draft, the 7-1 Deandre Ayton (16.0 & 10.7).
The Nets have used the same starting five -- LeVert, Russell, Joe Harris, Jarrett Allen and two-time former Sun Jared Dudley -- in each of their first 10 games, which is the good news. The bad news is, they are just 1-4 SU on the road this season and would need to win here, to cover. The Suns ended the game against Memphis on a 21-7 run and won for the first time since Booker scored 35 points in a 121-100 victory over Dallas on opening night. Expect the Suns to make it back-to-back wins for the first time this season by earning a victory here vs the highly beatable Nets.

Dave’s Tuesday Free Play:
1* on Duke +2.5
The Key: The Duke Blue Devils brought in the consensus No. 1 recruiting class and four of those players are expected to start right away. They’re led by preseason AP All-American R.J. Barrett and the athletic freak Zion Williamson. Point guard Tre Jones is the younger brother of Tyus Jones, who was the most outstanding player at the 2015 Final Four for Duke. Head coach Mike Krzyzewski is embracing the new one-and-done at Duke, and he’s mastering it. I think they make a statement here in the opener against Kentucky. Take Duke.

10* FREE NCAAB PICK (Kentucky -1)
I'll take my chances here with Kentucky at basically a pick'em in the much-anticipated season opener against Duke. The public loves the Blue Devils and there's a ton of hype around this year's team because of Zion Williamson and another loaded freshman class. I wouldn't doubt Coach K to turn this team into a title contender, but they lost all their key guys from last year. I just think it's going to take some time for this team to gel. Kentucky also has an equally strong freshmen crop, but they got some experienced guys back from last year's team, plus added in senior All-Pac-12 center Reid Travis (Stanford grad transfer). I think this could be one of the better Wildcat teams we have seen in recent years and I'm confident they take care of business tonight. Give me Kentucky -1!

Buffalo entered last Tuesday's home game against Miami-Ohio with the #1 rated defense in the MAC and they are as high as #31 in the nation in total defense, so expect them to make-up for the fact they allowed 42 points to be scored on them last week at home in this game against Kent State.

The Golden Flashes managed their biggest offensive output since September when they scored 35 points in last week's road win at Bowling Green, yet the game still held Under the total.

Kent has played 4 in a row this year Under the total, and the Under for the season is 6-3 in Kent's games.

Buffalo did soar Over last week against Miami-O, but they had been Under in their previous pair of conference games, holding Toledo to just 17 points, and the week prior allowing just 6 to Akron. The defense will be able to contain the offensively-inept Kent attack tonight, and while Buffalo can and will score the football, their output of offense combined with a bounce-back stifling defensive effort will keep this game just Under the posted total.

Series numbers show 2 of the last 3, and 5 of the previous 7 overall in this series having held Under the total.

Low we go at UB Stadium for Tuesday in this Kent State-Buffalo meeting.

My free play for Tuesday is Buffalo minus the points over Kent State.

The last place the 2-7 Golden Flashes want to be this Tuesday night is in a dreary and wet Buffalo to face a Bulls team that is chomping at the bit to notch another win and move one step closer to sewing up a berth in the MAC Championship Game at the end of this month.

Buffalo just keeps on truckin', as their win and cover last week at home over Miami-Ohio made it 8-1 straight up for the Bulls, and they also improved to 9-2 against the spread their last 11 home games!

Yes, Kent did pick up the win last Tuesday when they visited Bowling Green, but that was their biggest output of the year in conference action with 35 points. Cannot expect a repeat as this Buffalo defense was punctured for 42 points a week ago at home, but are by far the better of the pair of defenses on the field, as they rank at the top of the MAC in a host of defensive categories.

Kent is allowing right at 34 points per game to be scored against them, and lest you think Buffalo is just a one-trick defensive pony, remember that their quarterback Tyree Jackson is having a fantastic season, and he just threw it for well over 300 yards in last week's win.

They have a special season brewing in Buffalo, and tonight they take Kent State out back to the proverbial woodshed.

Lay the lumber with the Bulls.

My free play for tonight is on the Ball State Cardinals, as I like them minus the points against Indiana State.

The Cardinals figure to challenge for the Mid-American Conference title this season, and make their first trip to the dance since 2000. Remember, this is the same team that knocked off Notre Dame on the road in non-conference action last season, and was in the hunt for a league title. And once again the veterans are back, and will most certainly make a difference in leading this team.

Ball State has the experience, versatility, size and perimeter shooting this season, and will be led by talented point guard Tayler Persons. I think this team will cause problems all season, with firepower that includes returners Tahjal Teague, Trey Moses and Kyle Mallers. There's also Missouri-transfer K.J. Walton, who played in all 63 games for the Tigers, and will add punch to the Cardinals' lineup.

Indiana State, meanwhile, could experience a down year in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Sycamores have endured four straight losing seasons and it doesn't figure to get any better. The defense has lacked in years past, and until it gets tougher, the team will be bad.

Now, that said, playing teams like Ball State will get Indiana State ready for the Missouri Valley slate. But tonight, the Cardinals win and cover.

Philly college hoops coming out of the box hot tonight my friends, as the La Salle Explorers may the shirt trip cross-town to visit the Temple Owls.

Always entertaining when any of the Big Five rivals tangle, but when it's the first game of the season, even more exciting.

Looks like too many points for me to lay with Fran Dunphy's Owls who do return their top pair of scorers in Quinton Rose and Shizz Alston Jr., but are also minus a key front-court player in Obi Enechioniya who has graduated.

That and the fact the Explorers stopped a 3 game series losing streak with the 87-83 home win last November to even the series against the spread at 3-3-1 the past 7 showdowns.

La Salle has a new coach in former Villanova assistant Ashley Howard, and while their leading scorer BJ Johnson has also moved on, they do have some pop in their lineup with Pookie, as in Pookie Powell who averaged close to 17 points per game last year.

The Explorers have also added a transfer from Marquette in Traci Carter who started 23 games for the Golden Eagles last year.

It is usually the norm that any Big Five battle is hotly-contested, and this early in the season to be getting this many points is a offer too good to pass on.

Close one in Philadelphia tonight.

Take La Salle plus the points.

My free college basketball winner for tonight is on the Arizona State Sun Devils minus the points against the Cal State Fullerton Titans, in Tempe.

Gone are Tra Holder, Shannon Evans II and Kodi Justice - I get that. But established by now is coach Bobby Hurley's mental game of "Guard U." The Sun Devils went undefeated during non-conference play last season, and will be looking to re-emerge this season under the guidance of sophomore point guard Remy Martin. After infusing ASU with energy as a key played off the bench last season, his capabilities will be contagious this season.

The Devils have the talent to speed things up once again, but the diversity this year will be better, as Hurley could very well go bigger this season.

I'm intrigued to see stretch shooter Vitaliy Shibel, who started 20 games last season, not to mention 7-foot-1 Serbian freshman Uros Plavsic. Both figure to be contributing factors for the Devils this season.

Fullerton has a tough roster and will be a menace during the Big West season. The Titans surprised many last postseason, and could get there again. But to open the season in a tough venue against a Hurley-coach bunch is a huge chore.

Lay the home chalk.

COMPLIMENTARY WINNER

My free winner is going to be the road underdog Vancouver Canucks, as I think they can go into Motown and catch the Detroit Red Wings off guard.

There is something about the Canucks that is fun to watch, and of course it starts with rookie Elias Pettersson, who has taken the league by storm. When you add in Brock Boeser and Markus Granlund, the Canucks become awfully dangerous.

Pettersson, who has registered at least a point in seven of nine career games played, just registered a career-high five points on Nov. 2 against the Colorado Avalanche to set a franchise record for most in a regular-season game by a rookie. He leads all rookies in goals and points this season (9 goals, 6 assists, and became the 16th player in league history to score nine or more goals through his first nine career games.

Vancouver does an excellent job on face-offs, which is important when you have a kid like Pettersson, who has a quick shot and can make things happen when you're not paying attention. Bo Horvat, who has seven points (4 goals, 3 assists) over his past nine games, ranks second in the NHL in face-off wins (191), first in even-strength face-off wins (156) and first in faceoffs taken (340).

The Red Wings are just 4-8-2 on the young season, and I don't believe they'll be ready for the fast and steady Canucks. Take the road team.

Burns begins the college basketball campaign on a 51-39 ATS RUN since last year. That includes a 27-18/63% ATS RECORD his L45 top-rated sides. In fact, Ben's top rated CBB sides have CONSISTENTLY HIT BETTER THAN 55%, literally RAKING IN THE PROFITS, year after year. This game features the North Carolina Tar Heels and Wofford. Last season Wofford pulled off the big upset beating North Carolina 79-75 which is bringing a ton of action on UNC tonight but historically this team starts slow they always get some of the best young recruits but they are freshmen and they are playing a veteran team that treats this game like it's Super Bowl so expect an all out effort from Wofford as they keep this one close and give UNC a scare.

I think the Wings are the correct call in this one.

he Oilers might have a big name super star in their lineup McDavid, but they still dont do alot of scoring consistency as their 17th ranking in goals scored indicates. Their defence is actually the corner stone of their ability to compete in the NHL and they rank 14th overall. Meanwhile, TB despite of alot offensive talent , predicate their successes and failures on their ability to play solid D, and rank 8th in in goals allowed in the league. Tonight I expect a tired Oilers team playing their 3rd game in 4 nights to try to be conservative in their approach , and for TB to be center its abilities on slowing McDavid, which Im betting results in a low scoring affair that fails to eclipse the number.
