Chicago Bulls vs. Indiana Pacers Preview and Predictions 12-04-2018

NBA Predictions 3rd December 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 12/03/2018

The Chicago Bulls fired Fred Hoiberg as coach of the struggling team and Jim Boylen will run the squad when they visit the Indiana Pacers on Tuesday. Hoiberg went 115-155 in three-plus seasons as coach but the club is a disastrous 5-19 this season.

The Bulls have dropped a season-worst six straight games and 10 of their last 11 and executive vice president of basketball operations John Paxson felt a move needed to be made. "Decisions like this one are never easy to make, however I felt this was the right choice for our organization at this time," Paxson said in a statement on Monday. "After a thorough evaluation, I elected to make this move with the overall development of our team in mind. As a team, I believe it is imperative that we make unfaltering strides in the right direction and build the right habits to help put our players in the best position to evolve not only now, but into the future." Meanwhile, Indiana has dropped four of its last six games after Sunday's 111-110 road loss to the Sacramento Kings. The Pacers will be without star shooting guard Victor Oladipo (knee) for the eighth consecutive game.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBCS Chicago, FS Indiana

ABOUT THE BULLS (5-19): Second-year power forward Lauri Markkanen (elbow) made his season debut in Saturday's 121-105 road loss to the Rockets and had 10 points and four rebounds in 26 minutes. Markkanen missed more than two months due to his preseason injury and was certainly trying to shake the rust off as he was just 4-of-14 shooting. "I missed some easy shots, but I think I played some decent defense, and that's where I tried to make an impact," Markkanen told reporters. "I'm not worried about my shots. I just have to get my legs back."

ABOUT THE PACERS (13-10): Small forward Bojan Bogdanovic scored 27 points in the loss to Sacramento and has tallied at least 20 in six of the past 10 games. Bogdanovic has picked up some of the scoring slack with Oladipo sidelined and he took the possible game-winning attempt against the Kings on Saturday but the shot rimmed out with 4.6 seconds remaining. Point guard Darren Collison registered season bests of 12 assists and six steals along with 11 points against Sacramento and he has topped 10 assists in three of the past four games.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Pacers overcame an 18-point, first-half deficit to post a 107-105 victory in Chicago on Nov. 2.

2. Bulls F Jabari Parker recorded 21 points and 12 rebounds against the Rockets for his fourth double-double in the past seven games.

3. Indiana backup SF Doug McDermott averaged 16.5 points during the four-game road trip while making 11-of-17 3-point shots.

PREDICTION: Pacers 105, Bulls 97

Orlando Magic vs. Miami Heat Preview and Predictions 12-04-2018

NBA Predictions 3rd December 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 12/03/2018

The Miami Heat have finally cured their ills at home and aim for their first three-game winning streak of the season when they host the Orlando Magic on Tuesday. Following a six-game losing streak at AmericanAirlines Arena, the Heat managed to squeak past New Orleans and Utah by a combined seven points to improve to 2-1 on their current four-game homestand.

The 102-100 victory over the Jazz on Sunday came with only nine healthy players and in spite of an early 19-point deficit. "In many regards, from a standpoint of grit and not making excuses or feeling sorry for ourselves, this was our signature game this year," coach Erik Spoelstra told the media. The Magic will be playing the final contest in their six-game road trip, which is tied for the longest on their schedule. They improved to 2-3 on the swing with a 99-85 victory at Phoenix on Friday.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FS Florida (Orlando), FS Sun (Miami)

ABOUT THE MAGIC (11-12): Center Nikola Vucevic has carried Orlando on the trip, averaging 24.4 points on 55.2 percent shooting and grabbing 11.6 rebounds in the five games, including 25 and 15 in the 99-85 win over the Suns. "I was just trying to stay aggressive," Vucevic told reporters of his matchup with Phoenix center and No. 1 overall pick Deandre Ayton. "For big men, it takes a little bit, especially on the defensive end, to kind of get a feel for it. The game is so fast." Terrence Ross chipped in 21 points off the bench while Aaron Gordon added 18 on 8-of-12 shooting after missing the previous game with a back issue.

ABOUT THE HEAT (9-13): Four key players were already missing Sunday's game due to injury -- including the seventh straight game for 2018 All-Star Goran Dragic (knee) -- and the ranks were further depleted when starting swingman Rodney McGruder sprained his right ankle in the first quarter. The bench stepped up as four reserves combined for 42 points, led by Dwyane Wade's 15 and team-high eight assists. Dragic will miss Tuesday's contest and McGruder is questionable, the team announced, but guard Tyler Johnson (hamstring) and forward Derrick Jones Jr. (hamstring) are listed as probable.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Heat C Hassan Whiteside had 23 points and 20 rebounds against the Jazz and entered Monday's action ranked second in the NBA in rebounding (13.9) and first in blocked shots (2.9).

2. Magic SG Evan Fournier is 17-for-55 from the field on the road trip.

3. Gordon finished with 26 points and 16 boards to lead Orlando to a 104-101 victory over visiting Miami in the season opener for both teams Oct. 17.

PREDICTION: Heat 109, Magic 105

Portland Trail Blazers vs. Dallas Mavericks Preview and Predictions 12-04-2018

NBA Predictions 3rd December 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 12/03/2018

The Portland Trail Blazers are experiencing issues after getting off to a strong start. Portland has dropped five of its last six games entering Tuesday's road game against the Dallas Mavericks, who have won nine of their past 12 games.

The Trail Blazers have allowed 125 or more points three times during the six-game stretch and the issues were evident during Sunday's 131-118 road setback against the San Antonio Spurs. "It's definitely been a struggle," Portland forward Al-Farouq Aminu told reporters. "Teams have been able to score at a highly efficient rate pretty easy the last couple of games. I like the way that we started the game, we had a couple of steals, guys getting on the floor -- we even showed that at halftime. We just have to make sure that we sustain." Dallas continued its recent stellar stretch with a 114-110 home win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday and the Mavericks have topped 100 points in four of their past five games. Impressive rookie forward Luka Doncic (hip) was unable to play against the Clippers and is expected to return against Portland.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, NBCS Northwest (Portland), FS Southwest (Dallas)

ABOUT THE TRAIL BLAZERS (13-10): The 131 points allowed to the Spurs is the second most allowed by Portland this season behind the poor showing in a 143-100 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Nov. 21. The Trail Blazers are giving up 111.7 points per game and often are trying to outscore teams behind the offensive attack averaging 113 per contest. Star point guard Damian Lillard had 37 points and 10 assists against San Antonio for his third 30-point effort in four games and his third double-digit assist outing of the campaign.

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (11-10): Second-year point guard Dennis Smith Jr. will be in the lineup but had a dentist appointment Monday after losing part of a tooth courtesy of an elbow from Clippers guard Patrick Beverley. "It's just a freak accident," Smith told reporters after the contest. "I'm sure he didn't do it on purpose. I'm sure that wasn't his intentions, but it happens. Come back in, finish the game, we got a win. That's all that matters. I love when the game gets like that. You can go out there, get mad, play with some intensity, heart. When it gets chippy, it's just like playing back home. That's the best way to play." Small forward Harrison Barnes scored a season-high 30 points against Los Angeles and is averaging 24 over the last five games.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Trail Blazers went 2-1 against the Mavericks last season to win the season series for the first time since 2009-10.

2. Dallas G J.J. Barea scored a season-best 24 points against the Clippers for his third 20-point performance of the campaign.

3. Portland G-F Evan Turner (Achilles) could miss his second straight game.

PREDICTION: Mavericks 116, Trail Blazers 112

Sacramento Kings vs. Phoenix Suns Preview and Predictions 12-04-2018

NBA Predictions 3rd December 2018 by Gracenote
Kings vs. Suns Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 12/03/2018

The top two picks of the 2018 NBA Draft will be on the floor together when the Phoenix Suns host the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday. Top overall pick Deandre Ayton is making an instant impact for the Suns while No. 2 pick Marvin Bagley III is being brought along at a slower pace by the Kings.

Ayton, who played at Arizona, has started all 23 of Phoenix's games and is averaging 16.2 points and 10.2 rebounds while shooting 59.9 percent from the field. Bagley, who played for Duke, is averaging 13 points and 6.8 rebounds in 21 games off the bench and hopes to be available after missing Saturday's victory over the Indiana Pacers due to back spasms. Bagley's team is performing better at the .500 mark while the Suns have lost five straight games and entered Monday with the worst mark in the NBA. Phoenix star shooting guard Devin Booker (hamstring) is questionable after being injured during Sunday's 120-96 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, NCBS California (Sacramento), FS Arizona

ABOUT THE KINGS (11-11): Second-year shooting guard Bogdan Bogdanovic scored 20 points against the Pacers for his third straight effort of 20 or more points. Bogdanovic is finding his stride after returning from knee surgery less than four weeks ago. "It's not been easy for him to have the injury that he had and try to catch up a little bit and get his rhythm," Sacramento coach Dave Joerger told reporters. "I think he finally felt very comfortable (last week). Whether the shots are going in or not doesn't make a difference if you're finding a rhythm. I think he's starting to feel a little bit better and that's good for us."

ABOUT THE SUNS (4-19): The status of Booker may not be known until game day as the club figures to be cautious since this is the second time he has injured the left hamstring this season. Phoenix struggles even when it has its best player and is on pace to win just 15 games this season. "It's kind of hard not to focus on the record, but we've still got games to play," forward Josh Jackson told reporters. "We show flashes of how good we could be. We just have to be able to start stringing those runs together and just be better all the time. The more consistent we get, the better we'll be."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Suns went 3-1 against the Kings last season and won both games in Phoenix.

2. Sacramento PG De'Aaron Fox was just 4-of-16 shooting against the Pacers is 25-of-78 over the past six games.

3. Phoenix SF T.J. Warren (ankle) could miss his third straight game.

PREDICTION: Kings 109, Suns 102

San Antonio Spurs vs. Utah Jazz Preview and Predictions 12-04-2018

NBA Predictions 3rd December 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 12/03/2018

Excuse the Utah Jazz if they need directions to the arena when they host the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday. The Jazz have played 10 of their past 12 games on the road and two thirds (16) of their first 24 games have been contested in away venues.

San Antonio dropped back-to-back games by an average of 35 points before getting things back together with a 131-118 home win over the Portland Trail Blazers. "It had to be better than the last two games, right?" Spurs coach Gregg Popovich told reporters. "Everybody's got to participate. Good individual defense matters and good team defense (matters), but there is no team defense without talking or trust. We're trying to get there with this new group." Utah finished up a three-game road swing by falling 102-100 to the Miami Heat on Sunday. The Jazz host the Houston Rockets on Thursday and the back-to-back home games will be their first since Nov. 7 and 9.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, NBATV, FS Southwest (San Antonio), AT&T Sportsnet (Utah)

ABOUT THE SPURS (11-12): Shooting guard DeMar DeRozan was on the mark with a season-high 36 points against Portland after averaging just 14 in the two blowout setbacks. "That's why he has been an All-Star for so long," Popovich told reporters. "You just keep going. If you have a bad stretch, you know the percentages are probably with you. He's been around a long time. He's very confident, and he knows what he can do. That's not going to bother him if he misses a few shots. Scorers shouldn't have a conscience." DeRozan has six 30-point outings this season and is teaming well with power forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who had 29 points and eight rebounds against the Trail Blazers.

ABOUT THE JAZZ (11-13): Point guard Ricky Rubio scored 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting against Miami after averaging 8.3 points on 7-of-28 shooting over a three-game span. "Ricky was really good," Utah coach Quin Snyder told reporters after the win. "I thought he was poised with the ball and controlled the game for us on the offensive end, and he defended really well, too. That's the kind of play we need from him, and that's what he's capable of doing." Star shooting guard Donovan Mitchell was just 8-of-24 shooting while scoring 18 points after being 50 percent or better the previous two games when he averaged 29.5 points.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Jazz have won four of the past five meetings.

2. Utah C Rudy Gobert had 12 points and 18 rebounds against Miami for his 21st double-double of the campaign.

3. San Antonio G Marco Belinelli (neck) will likely return after a one-game absence.

PREDICTION: Jazz 104, Spurs 101

Rating: Golden DollarGolden DollarGolden Dollar

#1 CRACKED CORN (ML=5/2)
#2 ACARAMELADO (ML=2/1)

CRACKED CORN - This animal didn't run well on a sloppy track in her last race around the track at Mahoning Valley Race Cour. You probably should throw out that showing. I believe this horse will be right there at the wire. Gets Lasix for the 2nd time, so Rone must have confidence in her. ACARAMELADO - I like the fact that this first time starter's recent works have been over this track. The addition of Lasix might make this animal wake up and smell the coffee in this event.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 IAMTHEBEST (ML=7/2), #5 COPPER TRAIL (ML=6/1), #7 COWTOWN HOME (ML=8/1),

IAMTHEBEST - Notched a mediocre speed fig last out in a Maiden Special race on November 19th. Not likely to see an improved performance off of that number. COPPER TRAIL - While Equibase's speed ratings are strong, I would cast aside the high one from the November 19th in the slop. Some horses just run well on the off going. Improbable that the speed figure she notched on November 19th will be good enough in this race. COWTOWN HOME - This filly finished off the board on Oct 17th and wasn't even close last time around the track either. Somewhat easily forgotten fig last race out at Mahoning Valley Race Cour at 5 1/2 furlongs. Don't believe this less than sharp equine will improve too much in today's race.

I think about DEE WAY TO GO here. Her 63 average has this filly with among the top speed figures in this race. Lately Radosevich has provided players with a very good winning percentage with horses racing in dirt sprint races. Rivera will most likely be able to get this filly to break out sharply in this event. REGINA GEORGE - With a +35 ROI, this rider and handler duo has produced competitive profits recently for bettors. TERRIFIC PLAY - Had one of the top speed figures of this field in her last race. Looks solid for the conditions of this race today, showing solid figures in dirt sprint races lately.

# 8 BLAZIN ON BY 9/2

# 5 BRANDYS PRIDE 12/1

# 1 WINDI'S MOMENT 5/1

I've got to go with BLAZIN ON BY. Is tough not to examine based on Equibase Speed Figures which have been respectable - 57 avg - of late. This filly gets a boost with Velazquez in the saddle. The average class fig of 57 makes this horse hard to beat. BRANDYS PRIDE - She has been running soundly and the speed figures are among the best in this field. With a reliable jock who has won at a competitive 29 percent clip over the last 30 days. This has to be one of the top selections.

#7 FIRST PLACE (ML=8/1)
#3 EMBELLISHING BOB (ML=3/1)
#2 YAH YAH SIR (ML=7/2)
#5 DEVIL'S TEETH (ML=5/1)

FIRST PLACE - Based on the TrackMaster data I've reviewed, this gelding should run well off the vacation. Sedillo moves this thoroughbred here to Zia Park from Ruidoso Downs. Looking at the horse's recent past performance lines, he has shown the ability to win at different tracks. This gelding might as well call Zia Park home. Don't overlook how he races well over this track. EMBELLISHING BOB - Garcia knows this horse pretty well. Strong win percentage of 67 when horse and jock join forces. Nice return on investment for this rider and handler tandem. Another way to judge class is (EPS) earnings per start. This thoroughbred has the highest in the bunch. I think he'll be close at the end. YAH YAH SIR - The return on investment when Juarez and Arnett team up is terrific. That 82 fig this gelding registered in his last affair tells me he's a big time player this time out. DEVIL'S TEETH - This gelding is the longer price of the 'split' entry from the barn of Arnett. Have to make this gelding a contender; he comes off a solid effort on Nov 25th.

Vulnerable Contenders: #8 BOMBAY BOB (ML=5/2), #6 SNAPY HOUR (ML=8/1),

BOMBAY BOB - On a downward moving sequence. Speed figures keep declining. Won't be easy for this horse to beat this group off of that last speed fig. Calgary Flames vs. Columbus Blue Jackets Preview and Predictions 12-04-2018

NHL Predictions 3rd December 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 12/03/2018

First-place Calgary has a hot goaltender on its hands in Mike Smith, who will try to make it four straight wins when the Flames visit the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday. Smith has allowed four goals in his last three starts with a .940 save percentage during that span, and has yielded three or fewer goals in six straight contests in helping the Flames lead Anaheim by one point in the Pacific Division.

"Something gets a little bit off and it's just like a golfer - golfers struggle sometimes and they have to get their game back," Smith's father, Ron, told the Calgary Herald after the Flames' 3-2 victory at Chicago on Sunday. "He still believed in himself, and that's half the battle - when you don't lose your confidence. So I knew he would get it back together." Columbus trails first-place Washington by one point in the Metropolitan Division after a 3-2 loss at the New York Islanders on Saturday and is 8-3-1 in its last 12 games. Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella wasn't feeling too nostalgic after Saturday's game - the first at Nassau Coliseum since 2015, telling reporters: "I don't (care) about the home team and how they feel. I'm a little concerned about the mistakes we made." Columbus has won three straight meetings, including a two-game season series sweep in 2017-18 when Pierre-Luc Dubois scored three goals and Sergei Bobrovsky allowed one goal on 60 shots.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, Sportsnet West (Calgary), FS Ohio (Columbus)

ABOUT THE FLAMES (16-9-2): Sean Monahan (29 points) scored his team-leading 15th goal Sunday and has 10 points (six goals) in his last eight games while Johnny Gaudreau (team-high 31 points) has 12 points (four goals) during that span. Calgary is eighth in scoring at 3.47 goals per game thanks to a deep attack that includes Matthew Tkachuk and Elias Lindholm (12 goals apiece). The Flames are receiving strong work at the blueline led by TJ Brodie (team-best plus-18) and captain Mark Giordano (24 points, plus-14), who has thrown his hat into a wide-open Norris Trophy race.

ABOUT THE BLUE JACKETS (15-9-2): Cam Atkinson (team-high 16 goals) extended his point streak to 10 games Sunday with his 300th career assist, giving him 10 goals and six assists during the run. Atkinson and Artemi Panarin share the club lead with 27 points with the latter recording nine in his last eight contests. Defenseman Ryan Murray (team-best plus-12) left Sunday's game in the third period with an undisclosed injury while Anthony Duclair (eight goals) has missed the last two contests (undisclosed).

OVERTIME

1. Calgary has scored a power-play goal in four straight games, going 5-for-19 during that span, while Columbus has killed 13-of-14 penalties over its last seven contests.

2. Dubois (13 goals, 25 points) has three goals and three assists in his last three games.

3. The road team has won 13 of the last 16 meetings.

Colorado Avalanche vs. Pittsburgh Penguins Preview and Predictions 12-04-2018

NHL Predictions 3rd December 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 12/03/2018

Nathan MacKinnon rode a sterling four-point performance (one goal, three assists) to lift the Colorado Avalanche to a 6-3 win last week over the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins, who received all of their offense courtesy of Sidney Crosby's 11th career hat trick. The Nova Scotia native will be back in action on Tuesday as the Avalanche carry an 11-game point streak (9-0-2) into PPG Paints Arena against the Penguins.

MacKinnon wasn't the lone member of the Avalanche to have his way with the Penguins, as linemates Gabriel Landeskog (one goal, one assist) and Mikko Rantanen (two assists) recorded two-point performances. The NHL's Second Star for November, MacKinnon continued his sizzling play with his team-leading 19th goal before setting up Landeskog's empty-net tally in Sunday's 2-0 win at Detroit to open Colorado's four-game road trip. While the Avalanche are ascending in the Central Division, Pittsburgh has plummeted in the Metropolitan after dropping 12 of its last 16 games (4-9-3). "We've just got to find consistency," Crosby told reporters. "We've got to find ways to not hurt ourselves in games with big mistakes, and if we do make them, we've got to find a way to bail each other out of those mistakes - get some big plays or big goals, whatever it is."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, TVA, Altitude (Colorado), AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh

ABOUT THE AVALANCHE (16-6-5): Rantanen set up two goals for the fifth time during his eight-game point streak (four goals, 12 assists) on Sunday to keep his two-point advantage over MacKinnon for the NHL lead in points (45). While the offense has been consistent, goaltender Semyon Varlamov has been strong as he provides the last line of defense - highlighted by his 24-save performance against the Red Wings for his first shutout of the season and 24th career. The 30-year-old Russian has allowed just 14 goals in his last seven starts overall (6-0-1) heading into a tilt with Pittsburgh, against which he sports a 4-1-1 mark with a .920 save percentage.

ABOUT THE PENGUINS (10-10-5): Crosby converted a 2-on-1 rush with Jake Guentzel to open the scoring just 39 seconds into Saturday's 4-2 setback versus Philadelphia and extend both players' respective point streaks to four games. The 31-year-old Crosby has collected 15 points (eight goals, seven assists) in his last nine games overall and has 13 points (nine goals, four assists) in 13 career encounters with Colorado. Fellow former Hart Trophy recipient Evgeni Malkin is also averaging a point per game against the Avalanche with 14 (six goals, eight assists) in as many contests.

OVERTIME

1. Pittsburgh has not permitted a power-play goal in each of its last eight games.

2. Avalanche D Erik Johnson, who scored in the first meeting with the Penguins, resides one assist shy of 200 for his career.

3. Pittsburgh acquired D Marcus Pettersson from Anaheim in exchange for F Daniel Sprong on Monday.

Winnipeg Jets vs. New York Islanders Preview and Predictions 12-04-2018

NHL Predictions 3rd December 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 12/03/2018

The New York Islanders hope a return to their former home will spark a winning streak after dropping four of the previous six games, and after Saturday's emotional victory over Columbus at Nassau Coliseum they are back at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Tuesday to host the Winnipeg Jets. The Islanders rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the first game at their old home since 2015, earning a 3-2 win New York hopes will spark an offense that netted four goals in its previous four defeats.

"From the get-go, the crowd was incredible," Islanders captain Anders Lee told reporters afterward. "That kind of energy wins you hockey games." It now is the Islanders challenge to carry that energy back from Long Island and into their more modern abode against a Jets squad coming off a thrilling comeback victory of their own. Winnipeg, which has made a habit of blowing late leads, rallied from a 3-0 deficit after two periods to top the Rangers 4-3 on Sunday, getting the shootout winner from NHL First Star of the Week Mark Scheifele. "It wasn't the start we wanted, but a great third (period)," Scheifele told the media afterward. "We had our chances and we capitalized on them, so we are happy with that."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, TSN3 (Winnipeg), MSG Plus (New York)

ABOUT THE JETS (16-8-2): Scheifele finished last week with five goals and three assists in four games, including a career-high tying three assists against Chicago on Thursday and the game-winning overtime tally Saturday at New Jersey. Patrik Laine, named the league's first star for November, began the week leading the NHL with 21 goals, while Blake Wheeler ranked third in assists (30). One area of concern has been the recent play of goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, a Vezina Trophy finalist last season who has posted a .858 save percentage while going 2-2-0 in his past five appearances.

ABOUT THE ISLANDERS (13-9-3): Coach Barry Trotz's move to start the physical line of Matt Martin, Cal Clutterbuck and Casey Cizikas line paid off as the trio set the tone Saturday, before Cizikas scored the go-ahead goal at 7:09 of the third period. Reigning Calder Trophy winner Mathew Barzal continues to struggle, scoring only three goals with a minus-10 rating after finishing with 22 goals one season ago. Thomas Greiss made 28 saves to earn his ninth win Saturday and is 3-1-0 in his past four starts.

OVERTIME

1. The Islanders started the week 26th in the NHL on the power play at 15.4 percent, while the Jets boast the league's second-best unit at 29.1 percent.

2. Winnipeg coach Paul Maurice has not decided if Hellebuyck or backup Laurent Brossoit will start in goal Tuesday.

3. After Tuesday, the Islanders play six of their next nine games away from home, where they are 6-6-1.

PREDICTION: Jets 4, Islanders 3

Boston Bruins vs. Florida Panthers Preview and Predictions 12-04-2018

NHL Predictions 3rd December 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 12/03/2018

The last-place Florida Panthers look to wash away the stain of coughing up a three-goal lead in a loss over the weekend when they host the Boston Bruins on Tuesday night in an Atlantic Division matchup. The Panthers led first-place Tampa Bay 4-1 before giving up the final four goals in an overtime setback Saturday and have not won two straight contests since a five-game winning streak Nov. 2-13.

"We started the week with a back-to-back, and we ended the week with a back-to-back," Florida coach Bob Boughner told reporters. "You could tell that the tank was a little bit empty toward the end. But I liked the way we managed the game with 8-9 minutes to go. ... We just couldn't finish it off against a good hockey team." The Panthers, who recorded a power-play goal in 15 of their last 16 contests, are 2-1-2 in the past five games overall and beat Boston twice in the last four days of the regular season in 2017-18 to keep the Bruins from winning the Atlantic Division. Injury-plagued Boston, which is missing All-Star center Patrice Bergeron along with three top-six defensemen - including Zdeno Chara - has hung in there at 4-2-2 the last eight games, but dropped a 4-2 decision at home to Detroit on Saturday. "Tonight, I think it's a bad road to go down with the what ifs and the woe is me," Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy told reporters after Saturday's loss. "We're winning games with this lineup. Tonight we didn't, but we'll bounce back."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, Sportsnet One, Sportsnet East, Sportsnet Ontario, Sportsnet Pacific; NESN (Boston), FS Florida

ABOUT THE BRUINS (14-8-4): Forward Ryan Donato had the shootout winner Thursday against the New York Islanders and scored in Saturday's loss after returning from nearly a month in the American Hockey League. "I've always kept that intensity level and effort level," Donato told reporters. "There are just some of the details that maybe I learned in the AHL that maybe make me look or appear more confident, but I've always had confidence in my offensive abilities." Left wing David Pastrnak leads the team with 19 goals and 30 points after scoring twice and setting up two others in the last three contests.

ABOUT THE PANTHERS (10-10-5): Left wing Jonathan Huberdeau has strung together five straight multi-point games while accumulating two goals and 11 assists over the past seven contests to take over the team lead with 28 points. Right wing Evgenii Dadonov boasts goals in three straight games and owns seven of his 26 points in the last five contests to sit second on the team - two ahead of left wing Mike Hoffman (12 goals). Captain Aleksander Barkov has recorded three goals and two assists during a four-game point streak and defenseman Keith Yandle boasts seven assists in his past eight contests.

OVERTIME

1. Boston G Tuukka Rask owns a .934 save percentage in his last five games overall and a 21-5-1 mark with a .946 SP all time versus the Panthers.

2. Florida G Roberto Luongo (lower body) reportedly went through a full practice Monday and could return to the lineup as early as Tuesday.

3. Bruins D Torey Krug, who skipped practice with an undisclosed injury Monday, is riding a five-game assist streak and has 12 in 15 contests this season.

Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Buffalo Sabres Preview and Predictions 12-04-2018

NHL Predictions 3rd December 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 12/03/2018

Auston Matthews has returned with a vengeance, recording three goals and an assist in two contests after missing 14 with a shoulder injury. The 21-year-old star looks to help the Toronto Maple Leafs extend their winning streak to five games when they visit the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday.

Matthews began the season with a seven-game multi-point streak but was kept off the scoresheet in four straight contests before being sidelined. The 2017 Calder Trophy winner appears to have regained his old form following his recovery, scoring two goals and setting up another in Toronto's victory over San Jose on Wednesday while also tallying in Saturday's 5-3 triumph at Minnesota. Buffalo returns to the comforts of home after completing an 0-2-1 road trip - which followed a 10-game winning streak - with a 2-1 setback in Nashville on Monday. Sam Reinhart scored the lone goal for the Sabres, who won all six of their contests at KeyBank Center in November and have gone 7-0-1 over their last eight in their own arena as they begin a four-game homestand.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network, TSN4 (Toronto)

ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAFS (19-8-0): The rich will be getting richer, as William Nylander - who was a restricted free agent - is expected to be in the lineup soon after signing a six-year, $45 million contract just before Saturday's deadline for eligibility to play in the NHL this season. The 22-year-old right wing, who has reached the 20-goal plateau each of the last two campaigns, figures to make his season debut either Thursday against Detroit or in Boston on Saturday as Toronto kicks off a five-game road trip. Mitch Marner, who leads the team with 38 points, is riding a four-game assist streak during which he has set up 10 goals.

ABOUT THE SABRES (17-8-3): Reinhart has been heating up for Buffalo as he enters Tuesday with a three-game goal-scoring streak during which he has netted four of his seven tallies on the season. The 23-year-old forward scored just once in his previous eight contests. Jeff Skinner was kept off the scoresheet Monday after registering points (six goals, one assist) in six of his previous seven games.

OVERTIME

1. Toronto LW Zach Hyman has recorded three goals in his last three games after scoring the same amount over his first 24 contests this season.

2. Buffalo D Rasmus Dahlin, who was named the NHL Rookie of the Month for November, has gone three contests without a point following a four-game assist streak.

3. The Maple Leafs acquired Michael Carcone from Vancouver for fellow LW Josh Leivo and recalled D Travis Dermott from the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League.

Ottawa Senators vs. Montreal Canadiens Preview and Predictions 12-04-2018

NHL Predictions 3rd December 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 12/03/2018

The Ottawa Senators were only two points out of a playoff spot when the week began and can extend their winning streak to a season-high four games when they visit the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday to start a home-and-home set. The Senators, who host the Canadiens on Thursday, rallied to win at Philadelphia to start the run before knocking off the New York Rangers (3-0) and San Jose (6-2) at home with two of their best efforts of the season.

"We've seen ourselves grow in the last two games," Ottawa goalie Craig Anderson told reporters after Saturday's win over the Sharks. ". ... We're starting to string some momentum together, and playing in the right direction, playing the right way, and I think our guys are getting rewarded, too." Anderson is expected back in net after turning aside 63 of the 65 shots he faced the last two games as the Senators attempt to catch the rival Canadiens for fifth place in the Atlantic Division with Montreal dropping six of its last seven games (1-4-2). The Canadiens outshot San Jose 22-7 in the final 20 minutes Sunday, but did not score and suffered a 3-1 setback. "We knew they were going to be hungry and I think they were the better team in the first period," Montreal defenseman Jeff Petry told reporters after scoring the only goal Sunday. "And as the game went on, I think we got better, but that's something we need to do from the start."

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, RDS, TSN2, TSN5

ABOUT THE SENATORS (12-12-3): Thomas Chabot led all NHL defensemen to start the week with 31 points and became the third fastest Ottawa blue liner (27 games) to reach 30 - behind only Wade Redden (24) and Erik Karlsson (26). Center Matt Duchene did not make the scoresheet Saturday, but recorded eight goals and 14 assists in 15 games during November and leads the team with 33 points. Right wing Mark Stone, who scored twice against Montreal earlier this season, tied Duchene for the team lead with 12 goals Saturday and has five of his 29 points in the last four games.

ABOUT THE CANADIENS (12-10-5): Max Domi, in his first season with Montreal, has made the scoresheet once in the last five games but leads the team with 27 points - five better than fellow forward Jonathan Drouin, who boasts 14 points in his past 14 games. Left wing Tomas Tatar has two goals in his last five games to tie Domi and right wing Brendan Gallagher for the team lead with 11 tallies. All-Star defenseman Shea Weber, who missed the first 24 contests while recovering from knee surgery, has two goals, one assist, a plus-2 rating and 11 shots in his first three games back.

OVERTIME

1. Montreal F Andrew Shaw registered his 200th career point Sunday and needs one goal to reach 100.

2. Ottawa D Mark Borowiecki (upper body) has missed five straight games and is expected to sit out the home-and-home series with Montreal.

3. The Canadiens are 6-1-1 in the last eight meetings, but dropped a 4-3 overtime decision at Ottawa on Oct. 20.

Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Detroit Red Wings Preview and Predictions 12-04-2018

NHL Predictions 3rd December 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 12/03/2018

The NHL-leading Tampa Bay Lightning look to continue their mastery in the all-time series when they visit the improving Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday for an Atlantic Division matchup. The Lightning dominated New Jersey 5-1 on Monday for their eighth win in 10 overall games and seek a 13th consecutive victory over the Red Wings - a streak that includes a 3-1 victory at home on Oct. 18 and four straight in Detroit.

Tampa Bay's Nikita Kucherov is one of the hottest players in the league after recording a goal and three assists in Monday's win to extend his point streak to 10 games - a stretch during which he has netted five tallies and set up 19 others. Detroit last played the Lightning during its frustrating 1-7-2 start to the season but is a much different team after going 11-5-1 over its last 17 games despite suffering a 2-0 home loss to Colorado on Sunday. The Red Wings won an emotional contest in Boston on Saturday and was within a goal against the high-powered Avalanche despite registering only 24 shots until Gabriel Landeskog's empty-netter with 59 seconds remaining sealed the setback. "I don't think playing (Saturday) had anything to do with it," Detroit defenseman Niklas Kronwall told reporters. "We just had too many turnovers that left us with too much time in our zone for no reason."

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FS Sun (Tampa Bay), FS Detroit

ABOUT THE LIGHTNING (20-7-1): Louis Domingue has started 11 straight games in net since Andrei Vasilevskiy went down with a foot injury, but 28-year-old Eddie Pasquale could make his NHL debut on Tuesday. Kucherov has climbed to third in the league in scoring with his torrid stretch and tops the team with 42 points - five more than linemate Brayden Point, who has collected six of his team-high 20 goals and five assists during his six-game point streak. Captain Steven Stamkos (25 points) has scored two goals and set up two others over his last three games while defenseman Ryan McDonagh (20 points, plus-18 rating) notched a pair of assists on Monday.

ABOUT THE RED WINGS (12-12-3): Tyler Bertuzzi, who is tied for third on the team with 16 points, was suspended for two games after his conduct in the loss to Colorado, but coach Jeff Blashill has liked the fight from his team of late. "We'll go a lot further sticking up for each other than any downside of losing guys (on fighting penalties)," Blashill told the Detroit Free Press after two straight physical games. "They're real good players, but we're going to win in this room as a group and we're going to win fighting for each other." Leading scorer Dylan Larkin (10 goals, 22 points) went through concussion protocol on Sunday but should be in the lineup against Tampa Bay.

OVERTIME

1. Detroit D Mike Green, who has recorded five points in his last five games, has collected 12 goals and 21 assists in 55 career contests against Tampa Bay.

2. Kucherov needs one power-play goal to break the tie with Vinny Prospal (44) for fifth place on the franchise list.

3. Red Wings G Jimmy Howard posted a .930 save percentage in November and stopped 38-of-40 shots in Boston on Saturday.

Wild vs. Canucks Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 12/03/2018

The visiting Minnesota Wild and reeling Vancouver Canucks are each mired in three-game losing skids heading into the finale of their regular-season series on Tuesday at Rogers Arena. The clubs have each secured a win at their home rink, however the Wild had won six of their previous eight trips to British Columbia before a 5-2 setback versus the Canucks on Oct. 29.

Minnesota, which posted a 6-2 win over Vancouver at Xcel Energy Center on Nov. 15, begins a three-game trek through Western Canada after dropping a 5-3 decision to Toronto on Saturday. Ryan Suter set up a goal in that contest and has five assists in his last five games to tie with captain Mikko Koivu with a team-leading 17 for the Wild. Suter and Koivu each have scored a goal and set up two others against the Canucks this season, while Vancouver rookie Elias Pettersson and Markus Granlund have scored twice in the series and Bo Horvat has a goal and an assist. The 23-year-old Horvat tallied late in the first period of Saturday's 2-1 loss versus Dallas, as Vancouver dropped to 0-2-1 on its five-game homestand and 1-9-2 in its last 12 contests overall.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, FS North, FS Wisconsin (Minnesota), Sportsnet Pacific (Vancouver)

ABOUT THE WILD (14-10-2): Zach Parise was held off the scoresheet against the Maple Leafs after erupting for 10 points (eight goals, two assists) in his previous 11 games. Fellow forward Eric Staal scored his 10th goal on Saturday to move within two of team leader Parise heading into the contest versus Vancouver, against which he has a goal and an assist this season to boost his point total to 14 (five goals, nine assists) in 21 career encounters. Defenseman Matt Dumba, who also has 10 tallies this season, has been held off the scoresheet in back-to-back contests after notching five goals and as many assists during a seven-game point streak.

ABOUT THE CANUCKS (11-15-3): Vancouver bolstered its depth at forward on Monday by acquiring Josh Leivo from Toronto in exchange for fellow forward Michael Carcone of Utica of the American Hockey League. The 25-year-old Leivo recorded six points (four goals, two assists) in 27 games this season for the Maple Leafs, who needed to free up a roster space after William Nylander signed a six-year contract on Saturday. Carcone, 22, has scored six goals and set up 11 others in 20 games with the Comets in 2018-19.

OVERTIME

2. Wild F Mikael Granlund (team-leading 26 points) is the older brother of Markus Granlund.

3. Canucks G Jacob Markstrom improved to 2-1-0 in four career appearances versus Minnesota after turning aside 37 shots on Oct. 29.

Washington Capitals vs. Vegas Golden Knights Preview and Predictions 12-04-2018

NHL Predictions 3rd December 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 12/03/2018

The Washington Capitals cashed in during their last trip to Las Vegas as they emerged victorious in Game 5 to capture the franchise's first Stanley Cup title. The Capitals, who continued their run of good fortune with a 5-2 win over the Vegas Golden Knights at home on Oct. 10, will look to complete the season sweep on Tuesday when the clubs meet at T-Mobile Arena.

Evgeny Kuznetsov scored a goal and set up three others in the first encounter versus Vegas after erupting for eight points (one goal, seven assists) in last season's Stanley Cup Final. The 26-year-old Russian returned from missing a little over two weeks with an upper-body injury to notch an assist in Friday's 6-3 victory versus New Jersey before seeing his team's seven-game winning streak come to a halt the following night with a 6-5 setback against Anaheim. Like Washington, Vegas saw its season-high winning streak snapped as it dropped its first decision in six outings with Saturday's 2-1 setback at Edmonton. William Karlsson scored against the Oilers to extend his goal-scoring streak to four games heading into the rematch with the Capitals, against whom he had an assist in the first meeting.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, Sportsnet, NBCS Washington, AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain (Vegas)

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (15-8-3): Captain Alex Ovechkin completed a fairy-tale postseason in June by recording one point in each of the five games versus Vegas to capture Conn Smythe Trophy honors. The 33-year-old Russian, who tallied twice in the first encounter with the Golden Knights this season, is riding high with an eight-game point streak (seven goals, five assists) to boost his team-leading goal total to 19. Ovechkin's 32 points are one shy of Nicklas Backstrom, who scored and set up a goal in the first meeting with Vegas and has four goals and as many assists in his last three contests.

ABOUT THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS (14-13-1): Reilly Smith (team-leading 13 assists) fueled Vegas' recent run of good fortune by recording 10 points (one goal, nine assists) in his previous seven games before being held off the scoresheet against Edmonton on Saturday. "You're going to run into a little bit of a hot goalie and it seemed like pucks were just hitting (goaltender Mikko Koskinen)," the 27-year-old Smith told reporters. "But I think, overall, we played a good game and if we keep that momentum and that pace into the next one, it will give us a good outcome." Cody Eakin, who joined Smith in scoring in the first meeting with Washington, is tied with Jonathan Marchessault and Max Pacioretty for the team lead in goals (10).

OVERTIME

1. Vegas G Marc-Andre Fleury has yielded 24 goals in his last six games versus Washington (Stanley Cup Finals included).

2. Capitals D John Carlson has 11 of his team-leading 24 assists in his last eight contests.

3. Golden Knights RW Alex Tuch has eight points (three goals, five assists) in his last six games.

Coyotes vs. Kings Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 12/03/2018

Struggling at the bottom of the Pacific Division standings, the Arizona Coyotes and Los Angeles Kings are feeling a bit better about themselves as they meet Tuesday in California. Los Angeles is coming off a 2-0 victory over Carolina on Sunday but has the fewest points in the NHL (21) along with St. Louis, which Arizona routed 6-1 on Saturday for its third straight victory.

"We need points. I don't care who's on the other side," Kings defenseman Alec Martinez told reporters Sunday after scoring the tiebreaking goal with 2:13 remaining. The Coyotes have received a lift from Adin Hill, who earned Second Star of the Week honors after yielding one goal on 61 shots in victories at Minnesota -- in relief -- and Nashville, and against St. Louis while filling in for Antti Raanta and Darcy Kuemper (lower-body injuries). "To come in and give us that calmness he's provided when other teams had chances, he's done a tremendous job both games he's started," Arizona's Christian Fischer told reporters about Hill. The clubs split their four-game season series in 2017-18 as the home team won each time with Los Angeles' Jeff Carter scoring five goals in the two contests he played and teammate Drew Doughty recording six assists.

ABOUT THE COYOTES (12-11-2): Nick Schmaltz has a goal and three assists in three games since coming over from Chicago via trade with coach Rick Tocchet telling reporters: "The sky's the limit on him. There's another level to him." Said Schmaltz about his new club: "If we're moving our feet, I don't think a lot of teams can skate with us. When we're playing fast and moving the puck north, our speed and skills can take over and eventually wear teams out." Clayton Keller has team highs of eight goals and 18 points after scoring three and adding two assists in the last three games.

ABOUT THE KINGS (10-16-1): Jonathan Quick, who missed 18 games this season with lower-body injuries, recorded his 50th career shutout Sunday -- the most among American-born goaltenders -- after stopping 34 shots for his first victory of the season. Captain Anze Kopitar (team-high 17 points) has been held off the scoresheet for two straight contests after recording a goal and seven assists during a four-game point streak. Dustin Brown leads the club with eight goals, including five in a three-game stretch before being shut out in the last two.

OVERTIME

1. Arizona owns the league's top penalty-killing unit at 89.7 percent, permitting eight power-play goals this season and no more than one in a game.

2. Los Angeles owns the second-worst power play at 14.4 percent with only 12 goals - four apiece from Carter and Brown - and the fourth-lowest penalty-killing rate at 73.8.

3. Kings F Adrian Kempe missed Sunday's game with an upper-body injury and is considered day-to-day.

PREDICTION: Kings 3, Coyotes 2

Tuesday's Tip Sheet
David Schwab

The Big Ten has started the tradition of playing a week of conference games early in the month of December. This unique twist in scheduling gives college basketball bettors their first glimpse of conference play ahead of the actual conference schedule that starts up right after the New Year’s holiday.

Tuesday night’s conference lineup features a pair of matchups on the Big Ten Network starting with the Indiana Hoosiers’ road game against Penn State. Later Tuesday night, the No. 7 Michigan Wolverines will be on the road against the Northwestern Wildcats.

Sunday was the third day of early conference play in the Big Ten and the Nebraska Cornhuskers were able to win their seventh game in eight outings straight-up with a 75-60 home victory against 2-6 Illinois as 13-point favorites.

Later that day in a battle of teams that came in with just one SU loss, the 7-1 Ohio State Buckeyes beat 6-2 Minnesota 79-59 as 8 ½-point favorites at home. The total ended as a PUSH in that game on a closing line of 138.

Indiana Hoosiers at Penn State Nittany Lions (Big Ten Network, 7:00 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Penn State -2 ½, Total 136

Betting Matchup

Indiana got things started in the Big Ten on Saturday with a tight 68-66 home victory against Northwestern as a seven-point favorite. This followed a 90-69 loss to Duke on Nov. 27 as a heavy 15-point underdog. The Hoosiers are 6-2 SU with a shaky 3-5 record ATS after failing to cover in each of their last five games. The total has stayed UNDER the closing line in four of their last five contests. Indiana is averaging 80.4 points per game while allowing an average of 64.8 points a game on defense. One question mark for Tuesday could be forward Juwan Morgan.

The Nittany Lions made a splash in last week’s ACC/Big Ten Challenge by knocking off then-No. 13 Virginia Tech 63-62 as five-point home favorites. They opened play in the conference with a tough 65-59 loss to Maryland on Saturday as 6 ½-point road underdogs. Penn State is 4-3 SU with a 3-4 record ATS. The total stayed UNDER 142 points in Saturday’s loss and it has now stayed UNDER in Penn State’s last six games on a scoring average of 69.7 PPG.

Betting Trends

-- The Hoosiers have gone 12-5 ATS in their last 17 Big Ten games and the total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in 13 of their last 16 road games.

-- The Lions are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 games against the conference and the total has stayed UNDER in 25 of their last 35 games played at home.

-- Head-to-head, the home teams has a 3-0-1 edge ATS and the total has stayed UNDER in seven of the last 10 meetings in Penn State.

No. 7 Michigan Wolverines at Northwestern Wildcats (Big Ten Network, 9:00 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Michigan -6 ½, Total 129

Betting Matchup

Michigan’s hot start has them rapidly climbing the ranks in both national polls. After embarrassing North Carolina 84-67 as a 3 ½-point home favorite in last week’s ACC/Big Ten Challenge, it opened conference play with a solid 76-57 victory against the ranked Purdue Boilermakers as six-point favorites at home on Saturday. The Wolverines are a perfect 8-0 straight-up with a 5-3 record against the spread. The total has stayed UNDER in five of their first eight games.

Northwestern’s only loss this season heading into conference play was a 78-59 setback against Fresno State on Nov. 22 as a 6 ½-point favorite. The Wildcats doubled their SU loss total on Saturday when they came up short against Indiana. They are 6-2 SU overall with a 5-3 record ATS. The total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in five of the eight games. Four different players scored in double figures in Saturday’s loss led by senior forward Vic Law. The senior forward leads the team in scoring with 17.6 points per game.

Betting Trends

-- The Wolverines have covered in eight of their last nine road games against a team with a SU winning record at home and the total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in seven of their last eight Big Ten games.

-- The Wildcats are 2-5 ATS in their last seven Tuesday games and the total has gone OVER in five of their last seven home games.

-- The home team in this matchup has covered in five of the last six meetings and the total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in seven of the last nine games between the two.

Hot & Not Report

Week of December 3rd

The college basketball regular season is about a month old now, and while top individual teams tend to generate the bulk of the headlines (Duke, anyone?), from a betting market perspective there are two specific conferences that have performed very distinctly against the spread.

Who's Hot

West Coast Conference – Eight of 10 teams are .500 or better ATS; combined 44-30-2 ATS

The West Coast Conference is most notably for housing the current #1 team in the Gonzaga Bulldogs, and the 'Zags 7-1 ATS mark leads the way for the conference. But when six of the other nine teams are above the .500 mark against the spread – including Pepperdine's 5-1 ATS mark and San Francisco's 4-1-2 ATS record – we might be at a point where the entire conference as a whole is rather underrated in the eyes of many. Gonzaga may be the program that leads the entire ship of the WCC, but the rest of the teams in this conference are certainly capable of pulling their own weight.

Of the two WCC teams with a losing ATS record, one is BYU (3-6 ATS) and they tend to find there way to the top of the conference standings when all is said and done. BYU and St Mary's (5-3 ATS) are typically the biggest competition for Gonzaga in the WCC, so it will be interesting to see if that changes as the year goes on. The fact that nine of the 10 teams in the conference have a .500 record or better in terms of outright wins, suggests that for as talented as Gonzaga is as the #1 team – that's still missing arguably their best player in Killian Tillie – the rest of the conference shouldn't be slept on at all.

There is still about another month of action for these 10 programs before they start to go to war with one another the rest of the way, so don't be scared to hunt out some value with these WCC teams over the next few weeks.

Who's Not

SEC Conference – Four of 14 teams are below .500 ATS; combined 40-53-3 ATS overall

The reputation of being a “football” conference seems plenty true for the SEC through the first month of the basketball season, as they might be a conference that's a little overranked from top to bottom. In terms of outright wins and losses they are very good – as only Texas A &M has a losing outright record – but maybe all of that winning has led to plenty of inflation in the numbers these teams are trying to cover.

A 40-53-3 ATS record overall isn't extremely bad, but when only 28% of the entire conference has a winning record against the number, things start to gain some perspective. And if it weren't for Auburn (5-0-1 ATS), Arkansas (5-1 ATS), and Mississippi (6-1 ATS) leading the way, things would look a hell of a lot worse. Take the ATS records of those three teams out of it, and the rest of the conference is a disastrous 24-51-1 ATS.

Like the WCC headlined by Gonzaga, the SEC in basketball is always going to be headlined by Kentucky, and the Wildcats 3-5 ATS record isn't all that bad considering they were blasted by Duke to start the year. But when you've got teams like LSU, Alabama, and South Carolina a combined 15-7 SU and just 4-17-1 ATS, it's likely that the oddsmakers have given the depth of this conference way too much respect. These schools may turn into great bets as underdogs when SEC begins in earnest, but the majority of them are laying big numbers on a nightly basis in this first month and not coming close to cashing.

Chicago (5-19 SU, 11-13 ATS) at Indiana (13-10 SU, 10-12-1 ATS)

Indiana squeaked out a 107-105 win at Chicago on Nov. 2 but failed to cover as a seven-point road favorite and that’s been a common theme in this series. Going back to last season, the Pacers are 4-1 between the pair but the Bulls have gone 3-2 ATS. For the rematch, Indiana opened as a nine-point favorite and that number should be higher but the absence of Victor Oladipo (knee) is worth at least 2 points. He’s missed the last seven games for Indiana and the team has gone 3-4 without him.

The Pacers will be playing their first game at home after finishing a four-game West Coast road trip that saw them go 2-2. Indiana started with a pair of wins before dropping two in a row to the Lakers (104-96) and Kings (111-110).

Chicago enters this matchup on a six-game losing streak it has been hit or miss during this run, losing three games by single digits and three by 10-plus points and that includes a 121-105 loss to Houston on Saturday. The club just fired head coach Fred Hoiberg on Monday and I’m not sure if that change will help considering it lacks experience and depth. The Bulls have the third worst point differential (9.6) in the league and its only road wins (2-10 SU, 4-8 ATS) came against the Knicks and Hawks.

Indiana isn’t exactly super at home (6-4 SU, 5-5 ATS) but it’s been a bully against sub .500 teams (11-3). Laying a big number on a team without its best player isn’t a great approach but I’d probably lean that way knowing the Pacers have the best scoring defense (102.7 PPG) in the league.

Orlando (11-12 SU, 14-9 ATS) at Miami (9-13 SU, 10-12 ATS)

Tight game expected in South Florida with the Heat (-2) listed as a short home favorite over the Magic and it’s hard to make a case for either team. Miami is coming off back-to-back home wins over the Pelicans and Jazz but it hasn’t won three in a row all season. Do you trust the Heat to get over the hump before they begin a six-game road trip? Miami hasn’t been good at home (5-8 SU, 5-8 ATS) this season and it’s been horrible in the division (1-6).

Orlando is far from a world beater but it’s been a profitable team to back and even though this is their sixth straight road game, they returned from the West Coast on Saturday with a 2-3 record. More importantly, they went 4-1 ATS and they were only embarrassed in one game which was a 112-87 decision at Denver. Including those results, the Magic have gone 5-6 SU and 8-3 ATS on the road.

The past two meetings between the pair were decided by a combined five points and that includes Orlando’s 104-101 opening night win over Miami as a 2 ½-point underdog. With the line being in the same neighborhood on Tuesday, you can see that the oddsmakers have adjusted their ratings up on Orlando and down on Miami.

Portland (13-10 SU, 11-12 ATS) at Dallas (11-10 SU, 14-7 ATS)

Another short number here with Dallas listed as a two-point home favorite and it almost looks like a trap. Bettors not following the NBA on a daily basis are probably surprised that Portland is catching points in this spot but you could argue that the number should be higher. The Trail Blazers have burned bettors with seven straight losses against the spread and it’s only 2-5 SU during this span. Meanwhile, Dallas has been one of the pleasant surprise stories of the season and it enters this game with an 8-2 record both SU and ATS over its last 10 games. Plus, the Mavericks have gone 9-2 both SU and ATS at home this season. The club stumbled out of the block when listed as a favorite but it has covered three straight games in that role and sits at 5-3 both SU and ATS overall. As an underdog, Portland is 3-5 overall but it has dropped four straight and those losses came by an average of 24 PPG. Last season, Portland won and covered two of the three meetings against Dallas and that included a split in the Lone Star State.

Sacramento (11-11 SU, 13-8-1 ATS) at Phoenix (4-19 SU, 8-15 ATS)

It’s rare to see the Kings as road favorites (-6), this being just the second time this season. In the first spot, Sacramento blasted Atlanta 146-115 on Nov. 1 as a 2 ½-point road favorite. Knowing Suns guard Devin Booker (hamstring) is listed as ‘doubtful’ for this game, it’s hard to imagine Phoenix keeping up with this Sacramento team that is full of confidence.

The Kings are the third fastest team in the league with 92 shots per game and even though they don’t hoist as much from distance, they’re shooting 38.5 percent from 3-point land and that’s ranked second in the league. The Suns are ranked 25th from beyond the arc and without Booker, that number certainly declines. Phoenix only has four wins but three of them came at home (3-8 SU) and they did manage to cover a couple of the losses (5-6 ATS).

Something has to give with the total (226) on this game knowing the Kings are 10-1 to the ‘over’ on the road but the Suns are 8-3 to the ‘under’ at home. Sacramento is averaging 118.9 PPG away from home and they’re close to 40 percent from downtown on the road as well. The Suns have struggled offensively (103 PPG) all season and missing Booker will likely play a factor.

San Antonio (11-12 SU, 11-12 ATS) at Utah (11-13 SU, 11-13 ATS)

Utah opened as a 5 ½-point favorite at BookMaker.eu and the number was pushed up to 7 as of Tuesday morning. Knowing the Jazz have been awful at home (2-6 SU, 3-5 ATS) and it will be playing its first game at home after a three-game East Coast road trip, can you justify backing them tonight? The Jazz went 2-1 both SU and ATS in the recent journey and while the loss to Miami (102-100) was tough, they needed to rally past the Nets before blowing out the Hornets.

While you could be hesitant to lean to the Jazz at home, do you feel confident backing a San Antonio squad that has gone 4-8 SU and 5-7 ATS away from home? And, two of those road wins came against the Hawks and Suns. Winning on the road for the Spurs used to be a staple for the franchise but they were poor last season (14-27) and that trend has carried over to this year. The main issue for the Spurs (112.3 PPG) has been defense and their numbers have been worse on the road (116.2 PPG).

The Jazz have certainly been a disappointment this season but their schedule has watched them play 19 of 24 games against teams above .500 and they’re 7-12 in those spots. Against losing clubs, which the Spurs are, they’re 4-1. In case you forgot, Utah started last season 17-24 before closing the second-half of the season 31-10 record and I would expect another run in the coming months.

The Jazz won three of the four encounters against the Spurs last season and they’ve taken the last three games played at Vivint Smart Home Arena but two of the wins came by four points or less. The ‘over’ has gone 8-2 in the last 10 games of this series but none of those totals were above 200 and Tuesday’s opener was 214 ½. Utah (15-9) and San Antonio (14-8) have both solid ‘over’ leans this season, especially the Jazz at home (7-1).

This week's NHL betting predictions and picks: Rantanen powers Avs offense
Monty Andrews

Mikko Rantanen and the high-powered Colorado Avalanche travel to Pittsburgh to take on the disappointing Penguins.

The first full week of December sees a number of teams in surprising spots in the standings including one of the league's most disappointing teams who will try to win a slugfest with a high-scoring opponent – but things could change in a hurry as the 2018 calendar winds down.

The best Finnish-er in the league

Patrik Laine will look to add to his league-leading goal total on Tuesday when the Winnipeg Jets visit the New York Islanders. Laine has been blanked in his first two games of December after producing an incredible 18 goals in November; the Jets are 8-3-0 when Laine scores at least one goal, and 8-5-2 when he doesn't. Laine, who has 21 goals on the season, would love nothing more than to check the Islanders off his to-do list; they're one of three teams against whom Laine has yet to score in his NHL career, along with the San Jose Sharks and Columbus Blue Jackets.

Avalanche of Goals in Pittsburgh?

Two of the league's top ten teams in goals per game will do battle Tuesday night as Mikko Rantanen and the Colorado Avalanche visit Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Avs earned a 6-3 win in Colorado in their previous meeting last week.

The Avalanche boast the second-ranked offense in the NHL at 3.67 goals per game and employ the most prolific duo in hockey, with Rantanen (45 points) and Nathan MacKinnon (43) ranked first and second in league scoring. Combine that with the scoring exploits of Evgeni Malkin (30 points) and Crosby (29 points), and the Over will be a popular play here.

Ducking Under the Total

The Anaheim Ducks were a sensational Under play for most of the 2017-18 season – and they continue to reward Under bettors through the beginning of the 2018-19 campaign. The Ducks carry an impressive 10-19 O/U mark into Wednesday's home encounter with the Chicago Blackhawks, who come in having lost six of their past seven games. There should be plenty of action on the Under yet again, with these teams having combined for five or fewer goals in 28 of their previous 36 head-to-head meetings dating back to the end of the 2008-09 season.

Goalie Profile: Martin Jones, San Jose Sharks

We highlighted Anaheim's John Gibson here recently as a starting netminder under fire due to his team's shoddy defense. Sharks counterpart Martin Jones is the exact opposite; while San Jose has done a great job limiting shots (29.1 per game, fifth-fewest in the NHL), Jones has done a dreadful job of stopping them. He comes into the week with a 3.00 goals-against average and an .894 save percentage, ranked 30th and 40th, respectively, among qualified goalies in those categories. It's a big reason why the Sharks are one of only two teams with 30+ points and a negative goal differential. Jones and the Sharks will be hosting the Carolina Hurricanes Wednesday night.
Injury Update

The Arizona Coyotes' sensational penalty kill has been dealt a major blow after forward Michael Grabner suffered a nasty left eye injury courtesy of a high stick from the St. Louis Blues' Sammy Blais. Grabner has been a dynamo when the Coyotes have been a man short so far in 2018-19, racking up a league-leading four shorthanded goals. While Grabner has just six goals and five assists on the season, Arizona will still miss his offense, having gone a red-hot 7-1-1 SU in nine games in which the former first-round pick has recorded at least one point.

Hat Trick Trends

• Totals bettors should keep an eye out for games refereed by Kyle Rehman this week. Rehman has overseen 15 Overs against just eight Unders on the season, with teams combining to produce an average of 6.66 goals in those contests. The road team has been particularly prolific, averaging 3.57 goals in his assignments.

• Road favorites had a field day over the previous seven days worth of games, going a sizzling 12-5-1 SU for a success rate of 66.7 percent. That brings the road faves' overall record on the season to .500 (63-47-14), with the home underdog still a good historical profit play heading into the first full week of December.

Dave’s Tuesday Free Play:
1* on Cincinnati -10.5
The Key: Northern Kentucky is getting way too much respect for its 8-1 start this season. The 8 wins have all come against suspect competition, and 3 of them came by 6 points or less over Northern Illinois, Manhattan and Coastal Carolina. In their toughest game of the season, Northern Kentucky lost 53-66 as 10-point dogs at UCF. And Cincinnati is the most talented team they will have faced yet, and this is a similar line to the UCF game with the Bearcats favored by 10.5 points. Cincinnati is 7-1 this season with its only loss to Ohio State in the opener. And the Norse are 0-6 ATS in their last 6 games against a team that wins better than 60% of their games. The Bearcats are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall. Take Cincinnati.

10* FREE NCAAB PICK (Boston College -3.5)
I'll take my chances here with the Eagles covering this small number at home against the Friars. Boston College is a program on the rise in the ACC and I just think they are flying under the radar right now. We recently saw the Eagles in a similar spot at home against Minnesota, where they won 68-56 as a slim 1-point favorite. I get that the Friars only two losses are to Wichita State and Michigan, but the Shockers are way down and the Wolverines destroyed them. They only got one win all season by more than 10 points, despite being a favorite of 10 or more 4 times. Clearly Providence is overvalued by the books. Give me the Eagles -3.5!

1* Free Sharp Play on Central Michigan -6½ -110
My money is on the Chippewas to cash in a win and cover on the road against the Penguins. Central Michigan is in a prime bounce back spot off an ugly 27-point loss at TCU. That's only their 2nd loss of the season, so they have been playing good basketball. Youngstown State isn't very good. The Penguins are just 3-6 and one of those wins was a game where they were favored by 20 against Heidelberg and another was such a mismatch they didn't post a line. Last time out they lost by 34 to a rebuilding West Virginia team. Bet Central Michigan -6.5!

NHL FREE PICK FROM MIKE LUNDIN
The Colorado Avalanche defeated the Penguins 6-3 in Denver last Wednesday. I think they'll pick up another win in the second meeting in six days when visiting Pittsburgh Tuesday night.
The red hot Avs opened a four-game road trip with a 2-0 win at Detroit Sunday to extend their point streak to 11 games (9-0-2). The Pens on the other hand have lost 12 of their last 16 overall and own a losing record home at PPG Paints Arena on the season.
Pittsburgh has conceded 10 goals in back-to-back losses and its defensive struggles is likely to continue against a Colorado team which is averaging 3.67 gpg, 2nd only to Tampa Bay.
Free pick on Colorado Avalanche.

NHL | Senators vs Canadiens
Play on: Canadiens -175 at 5Dimes

Montreal has lost six of its last seven games after a solid start to the season to fall to 12-10-5. The Canadiens are in the final game of their five-game homestand where they have gone 1-3 making this a big game to turn things around before heading out on a three-game roadtrip. Montreal is 18-6 in its last 24 games coming off a home loss by two goals or more. Ottawa meanwhile has won three straight games as the defense has actually looked decent. Two of those wins came at home however and the Senators are back on the road where they have lost nine of 12 games and the defense has been the issue on the highway as Ottawa is allowing a league-high 5.08 gpg. The Senators are 1-10 in their last 11 games after having won three of their last four games while going 2-14 in their last 16 road games against teams with a losing home record. Additionally, we play on favorites against the moneyline after scoring one goal or less in their previous game going up against an opponent after scoring six goals or more in their previous game. This situation is 51-11 (82.3 percent) over the last five seasons. Play (12) Montreal Canadiens

Scott "The Bulldog" Rickenbach NHL Game #11 Tuesday Free Pick Ottawa Senators Money Line (+) @ Montreal Canadiens @ 7:35 ET - The Canadiens are off another loss and have now lost 6 of their last 7 games. It is hard to win when you're struggling to find the back of the net and Montreal has been held to average of just 1.6 goals per game in their last 5 losses. The Habs are likely to struggle again here as the Senators have won 3 straight games and have allowed just 1.7 goals per game in the process. Ottawa has certainly been much more potent in the offensive zone of late than the Canadiens have. The Sens are scoring an average of 4.3 goals per game in their last 8 games. With goalie Craig Anderson now "in the zone" and playing very well, they make for a very dangerous divisional road dog in a game like this. The Canadiens have lost 8 of 12 games against teams with a losing record this season and Montreal also has lost 7 of 9 divisional games. I'll take the big dog every time when in a situation like this as it is filled with value. Free Pick OTTAWA Money Line

It’s hard to trust the 9-13 Miami Heat right now. They have a huge injury list and remain without their best player in Goran Dragic. These injuries have been a big reason to their slow start this season. The Magic have been one of the most underrated teams in the NBA up to this point. They are 11-12 SU and 14-8-1 ATS in their 23 games this year. They have been a great bet on the road, going 8-2-1 ATS in their 11 road games. The Magic have been doing most of their damage over the last month, going 10-1-1 ATS in their last 12 games overall. I think the wrong team is favored in this matchup. Give me the Magic.

Tampa Bay just keeps on scoring goals and finding new ways to win hockey games. They have all 4 lines playing to their maximum potential and the goakies have been sharp as well. Now on the road, but playing a bad Wings team, take the Bolts to win their fourth straight game.

Wofford has built a fine program at a small school, but here on the road vs Kansas hoops program that can recruit some of the best players in the nation, their in trouble , especially considering they will face a team that is wide awake after surviving a home court scare from Stanford last time out. Look for HC Bill Self to have his troops ready for a group that is capable of making life difficult for the Jayhawks and for a top tier effort to be on the agenda.
Note:Wofford's two losses this season were against Power 5 programs North Carolina and Oklahoma.

Tuesday's FREE NCAAB WINNER: Northeastern.
Game 719.
4:00 pm pst.
Northeastern is one of the most-accurate, sharp-shooting teams in the nation, hitting 43.3% from the field, 41.1% beyond the arc, and 79.7% from the FT line. Syracuse is not a very good shooting team. The Orange does play a tough "D", but they just don't have enough offensive prowess to lay this type of wood. The Huskies are 5-1 ATS the L6 vs. the ACC. Take Northeastern. Thank you.

NBA | Blazers vs Mavs
Play on: Mavs -1 -105 at 5Dimes

Jack’s Free Pick Tuesday: Dallas Mavericks -1
The Dallas Mavericks have been flying under the radar over the past few weeks. They have gone 8-2 SU & 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games overall. And now they are basically a pick ‘em at home tonight against the Portland Trail Blazers, which I believe is a good value once again.
The Mavericks have really been on a tear at home. They are 7-0 SU & 7-0 ATS in their last seven home games, which includes wins over the likes of the Thunder, Jazz, Warriors, Celtics and Clippers. Those are five of the best teams in the NBA.
Now the Mavericks should be able to win their eighth consecutive home game tonight against a struggling Portland Trail Blazers team. The Blazers are 0-7 ATS in their last seven games overall, yet they continue getting too much respect from oddsmakers tonight. They have gone 1-5 SU in their last six games with their only win coming at home by 3 over the Magic as 10-point favorites.
Dallas is 11-2 ATS in home games after having won three of its last four games coming in over the past three seasons. Portland is 0-8 ATS in its last eight games after scoring 100 points or more in its previous game. The Mavericks are 8-3 ATS in the last 11 meetings, including 6-2 ATS in the last eight meetings in Dallas. Bet the Mavericks Tuesday.

MICHIGAN @ NORTHWESTERN
Michigan is 8-0 and their last 2 wins were impressive to say the least as they beat Purdue and North Carolina by more than 15 points. They have had the good fortune of getting 5 of their wins on their home court including their last 2. They have to now play a road game at Northwestern who have held 3 of 4 visitors below 60 points scoring. They are one of the better defensive teams in the Big 10 and even better at home. With seniors Law and Pardon leading the way offensively and a spot for a Michigan let down, I will grab the points.
Take Northwestern

NBA | Kings vs Suns
Play on: Suns +6½ -103 at 5Dimes

If the Suns weren't expected to be without Booker, I may have used them as a premium play. Even without their top scoring option, I still like their chances of a cover. The Kings won last time out. However, it was only by a point and they'd dropped their previous three games. While they've won four of their last 10, only one of those 10 games resulted in a Kings' victory of greater than five points. The Suns, 0-5 SU/ATS their last five, are 3-1 ATS the past four times that they'd failed to cover five games in a row. The last two meetings here have been extremely close, the Suns winning by two and three, 97-94 and 117-115. Consider grabbing the points.

NCAA-B | West Virginia vs Florida
Play on: Florida -1½ -108 at 5Dimes

1* Free NCAAB Pick on Florida Gators -1.5
I'm expecting Florida to lay one on the Mountaineers in the second-leg of Tuesday's Jimmy V Classic (held at Madison Square Garden) double-header on ESPN.
West Virginia went 26-11 last year and come into this game with a 5-2 record and riding a 4-game winning streak. I got a lot of respect for head coach Bob Huggins, but he lost a lot from last year's team, most notably do-it-all Jevon Carter. Experience and leadership are critical for the Mountaineers success with that unique play style.
I just don't think this is going to be one of Huggins' better teams and we have already saw signs of that, as they lost at home to Buffalo in the first game of the season and later fell to Western Kentucky.
Florida comes in at 4-3, but those 3 losses are against the likes of Florida State, Oklahoma and Butler. The Gators are extremely well-balanced with 8 players averaging between 6.4 ppg and 10.9 ppg. They should have no problem cracking the West Virginia press and I think it won't take long for them to take complete control of this game.
Last time out Gators won 98-66. Going back over the last 5 seasons, neutral court favorites in a game involving two teams who are outscoring opponents by at least 8 ppg are 103-62 (62.4%) ATS if they are coming off a strong offensive game where they scored 85 or more. Take Florida!
