# 8 ENID GIRL 5/1

# 2 HEZA MAGIC CORONAS 5/2

# 9 MOONS FIRST CD 6/1

My selection in this competition is ENID GIRL. The Equibase Speed Figure of 79 from her last affair looks very good in here. Has been running in the most competitive company of the group recently. As of late Vivanco has been on fire which may give the edge to this filly. HEZA MAGIC CORONAS - Looks like a sound candidate for the exotics. With a sound 71 average Equibase Speed Figure at the distance, seems well suited for today's race. MOONS FIRST CD - Ought to be given a chance - I like the figures from the last contest. The average class rating alone makes this one a solid contender.

#5 LINDAS BLACK COMET (ML=9/2)

LINDAS BLACK COMET - The jock/conditioner twosome of Solis and Puertas has a strong return on investment together. I like to wager on this angle, a horse coming back off a sharp effort within the last month.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 PRIVATE TERRACE (ML=1/1), #6 GAMBLER'S APPEAL (ML=5/1), #2 CONTESSA B. (ML=6/1),

PRIVATE TERRACE - Last raced on September 30th at Golden Gate Fields, finishing fifth. Unlikely to move up off of that performance in today's race. GAMBLER'S APPEAL - Run-of-the-mill speed figure last race out at Golden Gate Fields at 1 mile. Don't feel this horse will improve too much today. CONTESSA B. - Hard to back any horse with declining Equibase speed figures of 70/60/56. Finished third in her most recent race with a run-of-the-mill speed fig. When I look at today's Equibase class figure, it would take an improved performance to score after that in this field.

My selection in this competition is LAKOTA ROSE. With a sound 56 average speed fig at the distance, seems well suited for today's contest. Displays the look of a profitable play, averaging a solid 60 speed fig which is one of the top in this field. Poulos has shown excellent profits (+9 return on investment ) with horses in dirt route events. MARGARITA ATTACK - With a reliable 64 average speed figure at the distance, seems well suited for today's outing. EPPUR SI MUOVE - Is difficult not to examine based on Equibase Speed Figures which have been very good - 54 avg - of late.

#8 SITEENPARKSIDELANE (ML=5/1)

SITEENPARKSIDELANE - Look for this gelding to show much better in this event. Last event at Indiana Downs finishing sixth in the mud is no indication of his true ability. Is ranked number one in the field in earnings per race. A solid try right here will add to that total.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 PISTOL BOX (ML=2/1), #4 PRAY FOR KITTEN (ML=6/1), #10 FIGHTING FOR GRACE (ML=6/1),

PISTOL BOX - This gelding in all probability won't be close at the finish line. PRAY FOR KITTEN - You always think this horse has a shot to be victorious, but he comes up short most of the time. Should be difficult for this animal to beat this group off of that last speed figure. Unlikely to improve enough to run a figure anywhere near today's class figure, so put him on the vulnerable contenders list. FIGHTING FOR GRACE - Didn't end up on the board on Oct 17th at Indiana Downs. Followed it up with another less than stellar try.

Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Tennessee Titans Preview and Predictions 2018-12-06

NFL Predictions 4th December 2018 by Gracenote
Jaguars vs. Titans Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 12/04/2018

The Tennessee Titans were 15 minutes away from a third consecutive loss that would have all but snuffed out their postseason hopes, but a dramatic fourth-quarter comeback on Sunday has the team back in contention. The Titans will look to sweep the Jacksonville Jaguars for the second straight season when the AFC South Division rivals square off on Thursday in Nashville, Tenn.

Tennessee erased an early 16-point deficit in Sunday's 26-22 victory over the New York Jets but is among four teams trailing the Baltimore Ravens by one game for the sixth and final playoff slot in the AFC. "When you're playing on Monday night and Thursday night, you're playing good football and getting more TV games," Titans safety Kevin Byard said. "We have to take advantage of those and worry about us, not any of those other teams in the hunt." The Jaguars showed they haven't given up on the season, halting a seven-game losing streak by pitching a shutout in a 6-0 win over the red-hot Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. "The best we can do is play a bunch of spoilers to a bunch of teams who are in the hunt," Jacksonville safety Tashaun Gipson said. "We want to end the season in the right way. Who says we can't win five out?"

TV: 8:20 p.m. ET, FOX, NFL Network. LINE: Titans -4. O/U: 37.5

ABOUT THE JAGUARS (4-8): Jacksonville's only loss in September was a 9-6 setback to the visiting Titans in Week 3 but that was without star running back Leonard Fournette, who also sat out Sunday's victory while serving a one-game suspension. Quarterback Cody Kessler, taking over for a benched Blake Bortles, posted his first win in nine NFL starts by throwing for 150 yards and completing 18 of 24 against Indianapolis. The running game managed only 79 yards in the absence of Fournette, who rushed for 190 yards and three touchdowns in his previous two games. The Jaguars, who held Tennessee to 233 yards of total offense in the first matchup, blanked an Indy offense that averaged more then 34 points in its previous five games.

ABOUT THE TITANS (6-6): An ailing Marcus Mariota came off the bench to lift Tennessee over Jacksonville in Week 3 and produced another comeback last week by leading the Titans to 13 points in the fourth quarter, including a winning touchdown pass with 36 seconds left. "I'd rather him not have to do it, but if we have to, that has really been fun to watch," coach Mike Vrabel said. "It is exciting to have him be able to do that and keep his composure, find the guys, make plays." Wide receiver Taywan Taylor provided a spark to the offense Sunday, returning from a three-game absence with three receptions for 104 yards -- all in the fourth quarter. The Titans rank in the top 10 in total and passing yards allowed but give up 119.8 on the ground.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Tennessee has limited Jacksonville to 32 points while winning the past three meetings.

2. Fournette has 197 yards from scimmage and a TD in two matchups against the Titans.

3. Mariota has eight TD passes and two interceptions in seven games versus the Jaguars.

PREDICTION: Jaguars 19, Titans 17

New York Knicks vs. Boston Celtics Preview and Predictions 2018-12-06

NBA Predictions 5th December 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 12/05/2018

The Boston Celtics have won three straight games and figure to be fully refreshed when they host the New York Knicks on Thursday. The Celtics last played Saturday and then had four full days without a game to rest up for the Knicks' arrival.

Boston won by an average of 19.7 points during its winning streak and guard Marcus Smart was one of the many players who enjoyed the break in the schedule for a team that played 14 of its first 23 games on the road. "Just to get our bodies back right and to get our minds right and get the focus back and regroup and everything like that," Smart told reporters of the benefits. "... Sometimes you need that, especially with the schedule we've been having and constantly on the go." The Knicks have lost three of their past four games and were outscored by 15 points in the third quarter of Monday's 110-107 loss to the Washington Wizards. "We didn't come out ready," center Enes Kanter told reporters. "They had more energy and we just couldn't respond."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT, NBCS Boston

ABOUT THE KNICKS (8-17): Veteran guard Courtney Lee made his season debut against Washington and scored seven points in 16 minutes off the bench. Lee was just thankful to be on the court after suffering a scary neck injury during a preseason practice when he collided with teammate Ron Baker. "It felt good to be honest, because (my teammates) have seen the battle that I was going up against," Lee told reporters. "They saw how I came in the first day that it happened. I couldn't move my whole upper body. So it felt good to be able to be back out there because I was definitely nervous that it could have been a career-ending injury. It felt good to have my guys behind me."

ABOUT THE CELTICS (13-10): Small forward Gordon Hayward displayed his former All-Star form in Saturday's 118-109 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves when he posted season highs of 30 points and eight assists and matched his season best of nine rebounds. Hayward was off to a slow start in his return from a horrific broken left ankle suffered in last season's opener but flashed his former outside shooting prowess (4-of-5 from 3-point range) and ability to get to the line (10-of-10) against the Timberwolves. "It's slowly coming along. I think my confidence is slowly coming back, too," Hayward told reporters. "I'm still not where I want to be, but for sure, me attacking is better for our team and not being hesitant or passive."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The squads have split two meetings this season with the road team winning each time.

2. Boston SG Jaylen Brown (back) is hopeful of playing after missing the previous three games.

3. New York G Trey Burke (knee) will miss his second straight game.

PREDICTION: Celtics 110, Knicks 102

Phoenix Suns vs. Portland Trail Blazers Preview and Predictions 2018-12-06

NBA Predictions 5th December 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 12/05/2018

The slumping Portland Trail Blazers look to take advantage of struggling Phoenix when they host the Suns on Thursday. Portland has lost three straight games and six of its last seven games as it entertains a Phoenix squad with six straight setbacks and the NBA's worst record.

The Trail Blazers got off to a strong 12-5 start but losses by 43 to the Milwaukee Bucks and 28 to the Golden State Warriors began the stretch of substandard play that continued with Tuesday's 111-102 road loss against the Dallas Mavericks. "We know that we're much better than what we've been doing," star point guard Damian Lillard told reporters. "The things that we're losing games on, it doesn't come down to ability a lot of times." Phoenix has experienced a lot of low points this season but found itself trailing 36-9 after one quarter of Tuesday's 122-105 home loss to the Sacramento Kings. "We lost the game in the first quarter, then from there it was just competing to show we had character, which we did in the second half," Suns coach Igor Kokoskov told reporters afterward. "No excuses, the effort wasn't there."

TV: 10 p.m. ET, FS Arizona (Phoenix), NBCS Northwest (Portland)

ABOUT THE SUNS (4-20): Phoenix is struggling with star shooting guard Devin Booker (hamstring) and productive forward T.J. Warren (ankle) out of the lineup with injuries. The Suns have lost by an average of 14.5 points during their skid - only one of the defeats has been by single digits - and the home fans mocked the club with derisive cheers when they finally reached double digits 14-plus minutes into Tuesday's contest. "It is really hard to play a game where we don't make shots. There are going to be times like that," forward Josh Jackson told reporters afterward. "It's basketball, but the times we don't make shots we have to make sure we play good defense and not let the other team score."

ABOUT THE TRAIL BLAZERS (13-11): Frustration is adding up for a Portland squad that has made five straight playoff appearances and was playing like one of the best teams in the Western Conference earlier in the campaign. "This game was very similar to the last two we played," Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts told reporters after Tuesday's setback. "Get off to a slow start, get down at halftime, make a good comeback and fall short. I think we're all getting tired of it." Lillard scored 25 of his 33 points in the second half and has tallied 30 or more in four of the past five games.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Trail Blazers went 4-0 against the Suns last season and have prevailed in seven straight meetings.

2. Portland PF Al-Farouq Aminu is averaging 17.3 points (on 19-of-24 shooting) and 9.7 rebounds over the past three games.

3. Phoenix SG Jamal Crawford is just 9-of-32 shooting over the past four games.

PREDICTION: Trail Blazers 117, Suns 101

Houston Rockets vs. Utah Jazz Preview and Predictions 2018-12-06

NBA Predictions 5th December 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 12/05/2018

The Utah Jazz established a season high for points in their last outing and look to keep the offense churning when they host the Houston Rockets on Thursday. Utah has won four of its last six games and knocked down a franchise-record 20 3-pointers in Tuesday's 139-105 trouncing of the visiting San Antonio Spurs.

The Jazz set their 3-point mark in just 33 attempts and 10 different players connected on at least one from behind the arc during the impressive victory. "When you make a lot of 3s, it definitely helps for sure," Utah star guard Donovan Mitchell told reporters after making four 3-pointers. "But just continuing to drive the ball, finding guys on the perimeter, finding the big fella (Rudy Gobert) for the lob, whatever it may be, just making the right play was huge for us." The Rockets were at the other end of the spectrum in Monday's 103-91 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves as they scored just 29 second-half points, including nine in the fourth quarter. "For whatever reason, the second half we played without any kind of spirit or energy," Rockets coach Mike D'Antoni told reporters. "Things were going great in the first half, and then at the end of the first half we let them come back."

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, TNT, AT&T Sportsnet Southwest (Houston)

ABOUT THE ROCKETS (11-12): Houston had topped 100 points in 11 straight games prior to the flat second half that occurred in the opener of a three-game road swing. "In the second half, we just laid an egg," Rockets guard Eric Gordon told reporters. "They had everything going. You could tell by their confidence. They just played better defensively." Star guard James Harden scored 29 points for his 13th consecutive 20-point outing and 18th of the campaign while center Clint Capela scored 24 to top 20 for the sixth time in the past 11 games.

ABOUT THE JAZZ (12-13): Swingman Kyle Korver played his first home game of his second stint with the club and performed in style by making 3-of-4 from 3-point range and scoring 15 points in 15 minutes against the Spurs. Korver was acquired from the Cleveland Cavaliers for guard Alec Burks and two second-round draft picks and he expressed excitement for being back in the arena he played in from 2007-10. "It was a great first night back," Korver told reporters after the contest. "I have a lot of good memories of this place. We played really good basketball. The ball was moving. We were playing for each other."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Mitchell scored 38 points as the Jazz posted a 100-89 road victory on Oct. 24 to snap a four-game losing streak against the Rockets in the regular season.

2. Houston PG Chris Paul scored a season-low five points on 1-of-8 shooting versus the Timberwolves.

3. Utah PG Ricky Rubio is averaging 16 points on 19-of-34 shooting over the past three games.

PREDICTION: Jazz 123, Rockets 120

New York Islanders vs. Pittsburgh Penguins Preview and Predictions 2018-12-06

NHL Predictions 6th December 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 12/06/2018

The New York Islanders have successfully navigated the waters within the parameters of the Metropolitan Division far better than they have outside of it this season. Boasting a 10-2-0 mark in the division, the Islanders bid for their third win in as many meetings with the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday when the clubs reconvene at PPG Paints Arena.

New York swept a home-and-home set versus Pittsburgh on Oct. 30 and Nov. 1 to improve to 5-1-3 in its last nine games in the season series. Captain Anders Lee scored in the Islanders' 3-2 shootout victory versus the Penguins on Nov. 1 and has netted the team's first goal in three consecutive contests, including Tuesday's 3-1 setback versus Winnipeg. Pittsburgh's Patric Hornqvist matched a personal best with a four-point performance on Tuesday as he scored three times in 2:47 for the fastest hat trick in franchise history in a 6-3 win over Colorado. The 31-year-old Swede has 13 points in his last nine games, although he was held off the scoresheet in both encounters with the Islanders this season.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, MSG-Plus (New York), Sportsnet1, Sportsnet East, AT&T SportsNet-Pittsburgh

ABOUT THE ISLANDERS (13-10-3): Lee's scoring notwithstanding, New York has been held to a single goal in three of its last five contests (2-2-1). "One goal doesn't do it in this league," reigning Calder Trophy recipient Mathew Barzal said. "We've got to find a way to get on the board, whether that's the power play or 5-on-5." Barzal notched two of his team-leading 18 assists in the Islanders' 6-3 victory at Pittsburgh on Oct. 30.

ABOUT THE PENGUINS (11-10-5): Captain Sidney Crosby has tormented New York throughout his career, recording a staggering 110 points (35 goals, 75 assists) in 64 games for his highest total against any team. Crosby collected a goal and an assist in the first meeting while fellow former Hart Trophy recipient Evgeni Malkin scored in both encounters this season. Fellow forward Jake Guentzel, who set up one tally in two matches with the Islanders this season, scored his 50th career goal on Tuesday to extend his point streak to a career-high five games (four goals, three assists).

OVERTIME

1. Pittsburgh RW Phil Kessel has 13 points (three goals, 10 assists) in his last 12 games.

2. New York is 0-for-17 on the power play in the last eight contests.

3. Penguins G Casey DeSmith has yielded 12 goals in his last five games (4-1-0).

Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Philadelphia Flyers Preview and Predictions 2018-12-06

NHL Predictions 6th December 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 12/06/2018

Scoring goals hasn't been too difficult a task of late for Cam Atkinson, who has pumped in 13 to go along with six assists during his career-best 11-game point streak. Although Atkinson set a franchise record with his sixth career hat trick in his last outing, the Blue Jackets were left shaking their head after being gouged for nine goals heading into Thursday's road tilt versus the Philadelphia Flyers.

"It's embarrassing for the group. We need to be way better than that, especially in front of our home fans," said Atkinson, who saw his team answer a sizzling 8-2-1 stretch by falling for the second straight time following Tuesday's 9-6 setback to Calgary. The 29-year-old boosted his goal total to 11 in 23 career encounters versus Philadelphia after he tallied twice in the second period of Columbus' 6-3 win on Oct. 18. The Blue Jackets are a sterling 16-4-1 in their last 21 meetings with the Flyers, who spent Wednesday formally introducing Chuck Fletcher as the eighth different general manager in franchise history. "You want to get his trust as fast as you can," said captain Claude Giroux, who leads Philadelphia in assists (21) and points (30) and has recorded 24 points (eight goals, 16 assists) in 26 contests versus Columbus.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Ohio (Columbus), NBCS Philadelphia

ABOUT THE BLUE JACKETS (15-10-2): Defenseman Seth Jones mirrored Atkinson's take on Tuesday's offensive slugfest with the Flames despite extending his assist and point streaks to four and five (one goal, four assists), respectively. "Anytime there's nine goals scored, it's not always the goalie's fault. You can't always blame the goalie," the 24-year-old said. "You can't blame the forwards for not reloading. It's our job as defensemen at the end of the day to keep the puck out of the net." Sergei Bobrovsky was gashed for eight of the nine goals in that contest, but the two-time Vezina Trophy winner improved to 11-3-1 against his former team after turning aside 32 shots in the first encounter with the Flyers.

ABOUT THE FLYERS (11-12-2): Philadelphia's generous defense has come under the microscope this season, so much so that struggling blue-liner Shayne Gostisbehere appeared to tread lightly with the team undergoing a major overhaul at the top. "Anything in life, you only get one first impression, so you obviously want to be on your game. Hopefully, we can string some wins," said the 25-year-old Gostisbehere, who owns a minus-15 rating. Jakub Voracek collected a goal and an assist in Saturday's 4-2 win over Pittsburgh and has 15 points (five goals, 10 assists) in 22 career meetings with the team (Columbus) that selected him with the seventh overall pick of the 2007 NHL Draft.

OVERTIME

1. Philadelphia C Sean Couturier, who has a team-leading 10 goals, has 15 points (seven goals, eight assists) in 23 career matches with Columbus.

2. Blue Jackets LW Artemi Panarin had two of his club-best 22 assists in the first meeting with the Flyers.

3. Philadelphia has dropped eight of 13 (5-7-1) games at Wells Fargo Center this season.

PREDICTION: Blue Jackets 3, Flyers 1

Colorado Avalanche vs. Florida Panthers Preview and Predictions 2018-12-06

NHL Predictions 5th December 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 12/05/2018

Red-hot Jonathan Huberdeau looks to tie the franchise record for consecutive multi-point games and keep his Florida Panthers climbing in the Eastern Conference when they host the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday night. Huberdeau registered at least two points in six straight games - 14 points overall - to pull within one of Hall of Famer Pavel Bure (2001) for the club record and the Panthers are 3-1-2 during that stretch.

"Everything is working right now," Huberdeau, who leads the team with 31 points and is two from 300 for his career, told reporters. "It's unbelievable. I want to try to keep it simple out there, and it's been working. I just want to keep doing that game after game." Florida, which ends its monster eight-game homestand against the New York Rangers on Saturday, shut out Boston 5-0 on Tuesday and will need another big effort against the high-powered Avalanche. Colorado is second in the league in goals per game (3.64) through Tuesday and owns the NHL's top power-play unit (32.2 percent), but must sharpen up its defense after suffering a 6-3 loss at Pittsburgh on Tuesday. "We have to have a short memory," Avalanche coach Jared Bednar told reporters after his team's 11-game point streak ended. "That's what we've been preaching when we've been 9-0-2. ... I'm worried about the next game and that's the way our whole team thinks, and that's the way we approach it. It's why we've been able to sustain (the point streak). Now we've lost and the message doesn't change. It's consistent. We want to make sure that we respond and get back at it the next game."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, Altitude (Colorado), FS Florida

ABOUT THE AVALANCHE (16-7-5): Right wing Mikko Rantanen leads the league with 46 points and recorded at least one in the last nine games, posting four goals and 13 assists during the run. Nathan MacKinnon (19 goals) is next with 43 points, but has been kept off the scoresheet in two of the last three games, and the third member of the potent top line captain Gabriel Landeskog has five of his 31 points in the past four contests. Defenseman Tyson Barrie scored Tuesday in his return to the lineup after missing four games with an undisclosed injury.

ABOUT THE PANTHERS (11-10-5): Roberto Luongo returned to the lineup with 33 saves Tuesday after missing five games with a knee injury and notched his 77th career shutout to pass Ed Belfour and Tony Esposito for ninth on the NHL's all-time list. "It was great for (Luongo) to be back in there," coach Bob Boughner told reporters. "His rebound control was amazing. ... He didn't leave a lot laying around the crease." Right wing Evgenii Dadonov boasts a four-game goal streak and has at least one point in six straight while captain Aleksander Barkov is riding a five-game point streak (three goals, five assists).

OVERTIME

1. Colorado G Semyon Varlamov had a shutout in Detroit on Sunday and gave up a season high-tying six goals Tuesday.

2. Florida F Nick Bjugstad left Tuesday's game after being hit into the boards and is questionable with an upper-body injury.

3. The Avalanche took both meetings last season, including 7-3 at Florida.

Detroit Red Wings vs. Toronto Maple Leafs Preview and Predictions 2018-12-06

NHL Predictions 6th December 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 12/06/2018

Auston Matthews told reporters that he's starting to feel like his old self following a shoulder injury that forced him to miss 14 games, a prognosis that is positive for the 21-year-old and extremely negative for potential opponents. Matthews and the Toronto Maple Leafs bid to keep streaking along on Thursday as they host the Detroit Red Wings in a battle of Original Six rivals.

Matthews collected his second three-point performance in three games on Tuesday as he capped a two-goal effort by scoring with three seconds remaining in overtime of a 4-3 win over Buffalo. The top overall pick of the 2016 NHL Draft has five goals and two assists in that stretch in addition to his two tallies in Toronto's 5-3 victory over Detroit on Oct. 11. While the Maple Leafs have outscored their foes 24-11 during their five-game winning streak, the Red Wings have dropped five of seven after rebounding from a dismal start to the season by winning nine of their previous 11. Frans Nielsen recorded his second career hat trick and Gustav Nyquist tallied twice in Tuesday's 6-5 shootout loss to Tampa Bay.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Detroit, Sportsnet Ontario (Toronto)

ABOUT THE RED WINGS (12-12-4): Injuries are starting to mount for Detroit, which was still reeling from the loss of forward Anthony Mantha to a hand injury when defenseman Danny DeKeyser was on the receiving end of a slap shot from Tampa Bay star forward Steven Stamkos on Tuesday. Coach Jeff Blashill told reporters that DeKeyser is expected to be sidelined "multiple weeks" with a hand injury. "It's hard because Danny's shoes, they really can't be filled. He's a big-minute guy. It's going to be tough without him," fellow blue-liner Nick Jensen said of the Detroit native, who averages a team third-best 21:17 of ice time.

ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAFS (20-8-0): William Nylander is expected to make his season debut on Thursday, five days removed from signing a six-year contract worth $6.9 million annually. "Hopefully he can do what Auston does, jump right in like he has not missed a beat," veteran Patrick Marleau said of the 22-year-old, who has collected 61 points in each of the last two seasons and 135 (48 goals, 87 assists) in 185 career NHL games. John Tavares leads the team with 17 goals, although he was rather generous in setting up a career-high four tallies in the first encounter versus Detroit.

OVERTIME

1. Toronto C Mitch Marner has 11 of his team-leading 33 assists in his last five contests.

2. Red Wings LW Tyler Bertuzzi will sit out the second contest of his two-game suspension against the Maple Leafs after punching an unsuspecting Avalanche LW Matt Calvert on Sunday.

3. Toronto G Frederik Andersen has turned aside 38 shots in each of his last four games -- all wins.

Boston Bruins vs. Tampa Bay Lightning Preview and Predictions 2018-12-06

NHL Predictions 5th December 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 12/05/2018

The Boston Bruins may finally be feeling the effects of an injury-plagued roster and will try to manage a split in their swing through the Sunshine State when they visit the first-place Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday night in an Atlantic Division battle. The Bruins have dropped two straight, including a 5-0 setback at Florida on Tuesday, with All-Star center Patrice Bergeron and three top-six defensemen unavailable.

"Tonight it was men against boys," Boston coach Bruce Cassidy told reporters after Tuesday's setback. ". ... There are no easy answers. What we've done over the last few weeks as we've been depleted in the blue line is that we've stayed in games, played good team defense, got good goaltending and our power play has picked us up when we needed it." The Bruins, who could get defenseman Charlie McAvoy (concussion) back in the lineup soon, were 4-1-1 before their two-game slide and face the red-hot Lightning for the first time this season after being eliminated by them in the second round of the playoffs in May. Tampa Bay, which starts a four-game homestand after winning four straight and seven of its last eight contests to lead the league in points (43), rallied from a two-goal deficit twice and earned a 6-5 shootout win at Detroit on Tuesday. "We had a lot of different players step up (Tuesday)," Lightning coach Jon Cooper told reporters. "That's a sign that good things are happening."

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, TVA, NESN (Boston), FS Sun (Tampa Bay)

ABOUT THE BRUINS (14-9-4): Brandon Carlo returned the last two games after missing three weeks with a shoulder injury to give Boston three regulars on the blue line with captain Zdeno Chara (knee), McAvoy and Kevan Miller (throat) still out. Right wing David Pastrnak leads the team with 19 goals and 30 points, but has been kept off the scoresheet four times in eight games since linemate Bergeron went down with a shoulder injury. Left wing Brad Marchand (seven goals, 24 points), the other member of the top line, has been held to a goal and three assists in eight games since Bergeron (nine goals, 26 points) was knocked out of the lineup.

ABOUT THE LIGHTNING (21-7-1): Right wing Nikita Kucherov (12 goals, 30 assists) saw his 10-game point streak come to an end Tuesday, but scored the deciding tally in the shootout as Tampa Bay improved to 5-1 after regulation. Mathieu Joseph scored twice and set up Cedric Paquette for the tying short-handed goal Tuesday while their fourth-line mate Ryan Callahan registered his first multi-point effort of the season (two assists). Paquette, who already has two more goals (seven) than last season, told reporters: "I'm feeling really good. Confidence is high. I think the way our line is playing, our team's playing, we're having success just by playing simple."

OVERTIME

1. Tampa Bay G Louis Domingue, who was 8-3-0 in 11 straight starts before being rested Tuesday, should be back in net.

2. Boston G Tuukka Rask has a .934 save percentage his last five games overall and is expected between the pipes Thursday.

3. The Bruins, who lost in five games to the Lightning in the playoffs last spring, won three of four in the regular season.

Montreal Canadiens vs. Ottawa Senators Preview and Predictions 2018-12-06

NHL Predictions 5th December 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 12/05/2018

Max Domi and Jonathan Drouin are proving to be a formidable duo up front and they seek a second straight standout performance when the Montreal Canadiens go for a sweep in the home-and-home set against the host Ottawa Senators on Thursday. Domi and Drouin combined for three goals and three assists as the Canadiens pulled away for a 5-2 victory over Ottawa at home Tuesday for their second win in three games.

"I know how (Drouin) is going to pass the puck," Domi told reporters after Drouin set up Domi's team-leading 12th and 13th goals Tuesday. "You read the spin on it. He knows where the sweet spot is. Good players like (Drouin) can find that and all I had to really do was smack the puck." Domi, who had 45 points in 82 games with Arizona in 2017-18 before the offseason trade, leads Montreal with 30 in 28 outings and Drouin boasts 17 of his 25 points in the past 15 contests. The Canadiens have points in eight of the last nine meetings (7-1-1) against the Senators, who saw their season high-tying three-game winning streak come to end after giving up three goals in a 3:39 stretch late in the second period Tuesday. "Everything tonight was self-inflicted for us," Ottawa defenseman Dylan DeMelo told reporters. "They did a good job of capitalizing on their opportunities. ... It would be a setback if there's a snowball effect. If we can rectify it, and I'm very confident we can, I think when Thursday comes you'll see a better effort from us."

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, RDS, TSN2, TSN5

ABOUT THE CANADIENS (13-10-5): Right wing Brendan Gallagher scored his first goal in five games Tuesday to sit second on the team behind Domi with 12 and one ahead of linemate Tomas Tatar. Artturi Lehkonen registered three of his five goals this season in the last three games, including the final tally in Tuesday's victory, and fellow forward Paul Byron owns two assists in three games since returning from injured reserve. Former Hart and Vezina Trophy winner Carey Price (9-8-4, 3.01 goals-against average, .899 save percentage) has won two of three starts this month after finishing November with four straight losses and is expected in net Thursday.

ABOUT THE SENATORS (12-13-3): Center Matt Duchene leads the team with 34 points - 22 coming in 15 games during November - but he has managed one point (assist) and one shot on net combined in the first two games this month. Right wing Mark Stone notched his team-leading 13th goal Tuesday and boasts four tallies along with two assists in the last five games to reach 30 points - third on the team behind Duchene and defenseman Thomas Chabot (31). Gritty rookie forward Brady Tkachuk, who recorded 16 points (nine goals) in his first 14 NHL games this season, has not hit the scoresheet in three consecutive contests - a season high.

OVERTIME

1. Chabot entered Wednesday leading all defenseman in the league in points and tops Ottawa with 77 shots.

2. Montreal D Shea Weber boasts three points, a plus-four rating and 14 shots in four games since returning from offseason surgery.

3. The Senators own points in 11 of 15 home games (9-4-2) this season, but sit last in the league in penalty killing overall (70.7 percent).

Minnesota Wild vs. Calgary Flames Preview and Predictions 2018-12-06

NHL Predictions 5th December 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 12/05/2018

Coming off their biggest offensive eruption in nearly eight years, the surging Calgary Flames take aim at the fourth consecutive victory when they host the Minnesota Wild on Thursday night. The Pacific Division-leading Flames are riding a five-game point streak (4-0-1) and capped off their latest victory with a nine-goal eruption in a victory at Columbus.

Calgary erased an early three-goal deficit by scoring five times in one period for the fourth time this season -- more than all the other league teams combined. "The guys are maturing, the young guys especially," Flames head coach Bill Peters said after the 9-6 win. "The leaders do a good job leading and we don't feel like we're ever out of a game. The Wild were heading in the opposite direction of Calgary before snapping a season-worst three-game slide with a 3-2 victory at Vancouver on Tuesday night. Minnesota is 7-3-1 against Pacific Division opponents this season but has won only two of the last seven matchups against the Flames.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, FS North (Minnesota), Sportsnet West (Calgary)

ABOUT THE WILD (15-10-2): Devan Dubynk was in net for each of the past three losses and had allowed at least four goals in four straight starts before turning aside 29 of 31 shots against Vancouver to halt his slump. "That was an important game for him," Minnesota coach Bruce Boudreau said. "It could have gone south for him when the first shot on net goes in, everybody is looking to the stars. But he hung in there, and mental toughness for him, and battled his way through." Forward Jason Zucker has goals in back-to-back games but has only four points in 14 matchups against Calgary.

ABOUT THE FLAMES (17-9-2): Calgary's outburst was fueled by its top two scorers as linemates Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan each had two goals and two assists each to boost their respective point totals to 35 and 33. Gaudreau, who is riding a five-game point streak, has been on a tear with six goals and nine assists over the last eight contests and has two tallies and nine points in 11 career matchups against Minnesota. Monahan, who matched his career high by scoring 31 times last season, has goals in three straight games and eight tallies in the last nine contests to give him 17.

OVERTIME

1. Flames F Matthew Tkachuk has six goals and 13 points in the last 10 games.

2. Minnesota has 11 power-play goals in its last 10 games after converting three times Tuesday.

3. The Flames are 9-0-0 this season when Monahan notches at least two points in a game.

Washington Capitals vs. Arizona Coyotes Preview and Predictions 2018-12-06

NHL Predictions 5th December 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 12/05/2018

The Washington Capitals ascended to the top of the Metropolitan Division on the heels of a seven-game winning streak, but they have followed that up with back-to-back losses in which their defense has been repeatedly victimized. The Capitals will look to put a halt to their mini-slide when they continue their three-game road trip against the surging Arizona Coyotes on Thursday.

Offense has not been an issue for Washington, which has scored at least three goals in nine straight games, but it blew a four-goal lead in a loss to Anaheim on Sunday and allowed four tallies in the third period at Vegas on Tuesday night. "We were up there 2-1, and we just couldn't hold it," Capitals forward Jakub Vrana said after the latest defeat. "So we've just got to take the positive parts of the game and take it to the next game." The Coyotes have plenty of positives to take into Thursday's matchup against the reigning Stanley Cup champions, following a four-game slide with a four-game winning streak. Arizona has points in its last four games against the Capitals (3-0-1), including a 4-1 victory in Washington on Nov. 11.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, NBCS Washington, FS Arizona Plus

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (15-9-3): Rugged forward Tom Wilson, known for his physical play, had scored seven times during a six-game goal-scoring streak before he was knocked out of Tuesday's matchup by a blindside hit from Vegas' Ryan Reaves. With Washington not practicing Wednesday, there was no update on Wilson's condition but coach Todd Reirden lambasted Reaves for targeting Wilson. "You could hear it on every faceoff. You could hear the things that were being said," Reirden said. "It's a blindside hit where an unsuspecting player hits his head on the ice. That's disappointing."

ABOUT THE COYOTES (13-11-2): The unlikely tandem of goaltender Adin Hill and forward Nick Schmaltz -- neither of whom started the season with the team -- has fueled the hot stretch for Arizona. Hill, summoned from the minors due to injuries to starting netminder Antti Raanta and Darcy Kuemper, has earned four straight wins and surrendered two goals over his last three starts. The 22-year-old Schmaltz, a former first-round pick acquired from Chicago late last month, has made quite an impression with his new team with a pair of goals and three assists in his first four games.

OVERTIME

1. Arizona has the No. 1-ranked penalty kill with a 90.0 percent success rate.

2. Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin has eight goals during a nine-game point streak.

3. Coyotes F Clayton Keller, who is playing on a line with Schmaltz, has three goals in his last five games.

Nashville Predators vs. Vancouver Canucks Preview and Predictions 2018-12-06

NHL Predictions 5th December 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 12/05/2018

The Nashville Predators limp into Vancouver on Thursday to face the Canucks as they take a two-game trip through Western Canada with four key players on injured reserve. Nashville, though, remains in first place in the ultra-tough Central Division despite missing the exceptional services of Norris Trophy-winning defenseman P.K. Subban and center Kyle Turris (upper body), along with wingers Filip Forsberg (hand) and Viktor Arvidsson (thumb).

"It's huge motivation," Predators center Ryan Johansen told reporters about maintaining their lofty perch in the standings without four key cogs. "We have to step up. Guys need to step up, including myself, including Pekka Rinne and Roman Josi. We need everyone stepping up right now throughout our whole lineup. That'll be motivation every game." Rinne is playing like the reigning Vezina Trophy winner that he is with a 12-4-1 record and league bests of a 1.81 goals-against average and .935 save percentage while not allowing more than three goals in any of his 19 appearances this season. Vancouver has fallen on hard times since a 10-6-1 start, succumbing to Minnesota 3-2 on Tuesday for its fourth straight loss - all at home - and dropping to 1-10-2 in its last 13 games. "Our team hasn't got the results, and it's hard when you don't win, but I'll give our team credit, they're going out and competing,'' Canucks coach Travis Green told reporters. "They're not letting themselves not show up. And that's hard when you haven't won in a while."

TV: 10 p.m. ET, FS Tennessee (Nashville), Sportsnet Pacific (Vancouver)

ABOUT THE PREDATORS (19-8-1): Forsberg has a team-high 14 goals while Arvidsson potted eight in 13 games before his injury. Ryan Hartman (seven goals) and Kevin Fiala (five), who has scored in two straight games and in three of the last four, have joined the top line centered by Johansen (team highs of 24 points - three in his last two contests - and 19 assists). Josi (five goals, 19 points), Mattias Ekholm (three, 17) and Ryan Ellis (two, 13) provide offensive support from the blue line with Ellis scoring Monday in the win over Buffalo, Josi recording four assists in the last five games and Ekholm assisting in two straight contests.

ABOUT THE CANUCKS (11-16-3): Rookie Elias Pettersson burst out of the gate with 10 goals and 17 points in his first 11 career games but has only three goals and six points in his last 13 contests. Bo Horvat paces the team with 25 points and his 12 goals are one behind Pettersson for the club lead. Center Jay Beagle returned Tuesday after missing 24 games because of a broken arm and was a plus-1 with two shots and two hits in 8 minutes, 33 seconds of ice time.

OVERTIME

1. Vancouver is 0-for-12 with the man advantage over its last four games and allowed three power-play goals in three chances against Minnesota, dropping to No. 27 in the league in penalty killing at 74.8 percent.

2. Nashville has held its opponents to zero or one goal nine times this season.

3. The Predators have won the three-game series 2-1 in each of the last four seasons.

Chicago Blackhawks vs. Vegas Golden Knights Preview and Predictions 2018-12-06

NHL Predictions 6th December 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 12/06/2018

The Vegas Golden Knights began the 2018-19 campaign with a Stanley Cup hangover, losing 11 of their first 18 games after reaching the Final in their inaugural season. They appear to have cleared the cobwebs as they seek their seventh win in eight contests when they host the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday.

Vegas had its five-game winning streak snapped in Edmonton on Saturday but bounced back with a 5-3 home victory over Washington three days later. Defenseman Nate Schmidt scored his first two goals of the season in the final 1:25 of the third period, including the tiebreaker on a power play, and added an assist as the Golden Knights tallied four times in the session to notch their third straight win at T-Mobile Arena. Chicago is coming off a 4-2 setback in Anaheim on Wednesday that extended its losing streak to five games. Alex DeBrincat and defenseman Erik Gustafsson scored while Patrick Kane notched an assist for his team-leading 31st point as the Blackhawks fell for the seventh time in eight contests.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, SportsnetOne, Sportsnet360, Sportsnet East, Sportsnet Ontario, NBCS Chicago, AT&T SportsNet-Rocky Mountain (Vegas)

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (9-15-5): Kane's assist Wednesday gave him six points in his last six games and prevented him from being kept off the scoresheet in back-to-back contests for only the second time this season. Jonathan Toews is closing in on a pair of milestones after setting up a goal in the loss to the Ducks. The 30-year-old captain enters Thursday seven assists shy of 400 in the NHL and needs three points to reach 700 for his career.

ABOUT THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS (15-13-1): Vegas hopes to have Max Pacioretty back in the lineup Thursday after the 30-year-old left wing sat out the win over Washington because of an illness. Pacioretty was kept off the scoresheet in Edmonton after registering eight goals and three assists during a seven-game point streak that concluded with three consecutive two-point performances. Cody Eakin has collected six points over his last four contests, with his team-leading 11th goal on Tuesday being his 200th career point.

OVERTIME

1. Pacioretty scored only two goals in 16 contests prior to his point streak.

2. Chicago Ds Duncan Keith and rookie Henri Jokiharju both have notched 10 assists but have yet to record a goal this season.

3. Vegas C William Karlsson, who is tied for the team lead with 21 points, had his four-game goal-scoring streak halted Tuesday.

New Jersey Devils vs. Los Angeles Kings Preview and Predictions 2018-12-06

NHL Predictions 5th December 2018 by Gracenote
Devils vs. Kings Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 12/05/2018

The New Jersey Devils have been solid at home and a disaster on the road, but the team's focus right now is to end a six-game slide that has sent them plummeting to the bottom of the Eastern Conference. Having won only twice in 13 games away from home (2-10-1), New Jersey kicks off a three-game California road trip with a visit to the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night.

The Devils extended their slide with a 5-1 loss to nemesis Tampa Bay to fall for the 17th time in 22 games (5-12-5) since opening the season with four consecutive victories. "The road forces you to play simple, and just go play, not worry about momentum as much," forward Taylor Hall said. "There's no doubt about it that we're not feeling it as a team right now, and maybe a chance of scenery is good." The punchless Kings, who own the worst record in the Western Conference, have lost three of four and scored a combined four goals in that span. Los Angeles also has struggled against the Devils, getting outscored 8-1 in a two-game season sweep in 2017-18 and losing four of its last five at home versus New Jersey.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, MSG Plus (New Jersey), FS West (Los Angeles)

ABOUT THE DEVILS (9-12-5): Hall, the league's reigning Most Valuable Player, was benched for nearly 7 1/2 minutes in Monday's loss but did not dispute coach John Hynes' reason for yanking him from the lineup. "Just sometimes you gotta take your lumps and try and come back and play better," Hall said. "Everyone has a role on this team, and whether it's big or small, you have to do your best in that role." Cory Schneider, who has lost all five of his starts this season, replaced Keith Kinkaid during Monday's loss, but Hynes declined to name a starter for the matchup against Los Angeles.

ABOUT THE KINGS (10-17-1): Los Angeles has scored one goal or less 10 times and among the players who are struggling to find the net are linemates Tyler Toffoli (mired in a 10-game goal drought) and Jeff Carter, who has tallied once in his last 15. Special teams continue to be an issue for the Kings, who allowed a power-play goal and a short-handed tally in Tuesday's 2-1 setback to Arizona. Los Angeles ranks 30th in the league with the man advantage, converting on only 14.1 percent (12-for-85) of its chances while the penalty kill also is also near the bottom of the NHL at No. 28 (73.8).

OVERTIME

1. Schneider is 5-4-0 with a 2.05 goals-against average versus Los Angeles.

2. Kings G Jonathan Quick is 4-4-2 with a 2.47 GAA versus New Jersey.

3. Devils F Jesper Bratt is expected back in the lineup after sitting out the last game due to illness.

PREDICTION: Devils 3, Kings 2

Maryland Terrapins vs. Purdue Boilermakers Preview and Predictions 2018-12-06

NCAAB Predictions 5th December 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 12/05/2018

No. 24 Purdue looks to recover from back-to-back losses when it hosts 23rd-ranked Maryland on Thursday in Big Ten play. The Boilermakers dropped a 73-72 decision to No. 11 Florida State in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge before they were routed 76-57 by fifth-ranked Michigan on Saturday to slide down the national polls and hope to avoid their fourth straight loss to a ranked opponent in the last three weeks by knocking off the Terrapins for the fifth consecutive time.

"We have to go back to the drawing board and work on doing our jobs better," Purdue guard Carsen Edwards told reporters. "Doing the small things on defense and the offensive end." Maryland bounced back from its first loss of the season to fourth-ranked Virginia (76-71) with a 66-59 win against Penn State in its Big Ten opener on Saturday. The Terrapins' dynamic frontcourt duo of Bruno Fernando and Jalen Smith, who are both projected to be NBA draft picks, combined for 28 points and 21 rebounds against the Nittany Lions, and hope to lead the Terrapins to their first win against Purdue since Feb. 6, 2016. "Our biggest thing that we wanted was to come out 1-0 as I think that does a lot for our momentum in the Big Ten," Maryland guard Anthony Cowan Jr. told reporters. "It's going to be a crazy game up at Purdue and we can just get ready for that now."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, Big Ten Network

ABOUT MARYLAND (7-1, 1-0 Big Ten): Smith continued his stellar start to his college career as he led the way with 16 points to go along with eight rebounds in the win over Penn State. Cowan scored 15 points and dished out four assists while Fernando added 12 points and 13 rebounds against the Nittany Lions to become the first Terrapins player to register three straight double-doubles since Jordan Williams in 2011. Aaron Wiggins continued to provide some timely production off the bench as he added nine points while fellow freshman Eric Ayala tallied eight points and four rebounds.

ABOUT PURDUE (5-3, 0-1): Edwards scored a team-high 19 points to go along with three assists against Michigan to finish in double figures for the 28th consecutive time. Ryan Cline drained three 3-pointers en route to 15 points against the Wolverines and is 27-of-53 (51 percent) from beyond the arc over his last six games. Aaron Wheeler provided a spark off the bench as he made all three of his shots from the field to finish with eight points and collected five rebounds in 17 minutes while Evan Boudreaux was held to three points on 1-of-8 shooting after averaging 13 points in his previous three games.

TIP-INS

1. Purdue is 32-4 at home in Big Ten play since 2014-15.

2. Cowan needs 25 points to reach 1,000 for his career.

3. Edwards leads the Big Ten in scoring at 24.4 points per game.

Iowa State Cyclones vs. Iowa Hawkeyes Preview and Predictions 2018-12-06

NCAAB Predictions 5th December 2018 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 12/05/2018

Iowa State faces its first true road test of the season when it visits 19th-ranked Iowa on Thursday in the annual Cy-Hawk series. The Cyclones have won four consecutive games, including an 81-59 victory against North Dakota State on Monday, to move on the cusp on the national rankings after receiving the second-most votes (33) outside the Top 25, and hope to continue their upward trajectory by knocking off the Hawkeyes for the fifth time in the last six years.

"We know Iowa is a very good team and they have won some big games, but we have to go in there and take care of business," Iowa State forward Michael Jacobson told reporters. "We need to move the ball and try to be versatile and hopefully come out with a win." Iowa turned some heads by racing out to a 6-0 start, but expectations have been tempered after they suffered back-to-back losses in Big Ten play - including a 90-68 setback to No. 10 Michigan State on Monday. The Hawkeyes averaged 85.3 points during their six-game winning streak, but have been held to fewer than 70 while being outscored 86-46 in the paint over their last two defeats, and hope to bounce back by avoiding its first home loss to the Cyclones since 2014. "We didn't expect things to go perfectly for the whole year," Iowa forward Tyler Cook told reporters. "It's a hiccup and it doesn't change the way I look at this team."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1

ABOUT IOWA STATE (7-1): Marial Shayok scored 20 points and matched a career high with three steals in the win against North Dakota State to finish in double figures for the eighth time in as many games. Jacobson added 15 points and 10 rebounds to notch his second consecutive double-double as the Cyclones posted their fourth win of 20 or more points this season. Cameron Lard, who averaged 12.6 points and 8.1 rebounds in 2017-18, scored two points and blocked two shots in 10 minutes during his season debut Monday after missing the previous seven games due to suspension.

ABOUT IOWA (6-2): Cook scored 15 points and collected eight rebounds in the loss to Michigan State to move within 40 points of reaching 1,000 for his career. Isaiah Moss added 13 points while Jordan Bohannon drilled a pair of triples en route to 11 points against the Spartans to move within two 3-pointers of becoming the seventh player in program history to reach 200 for his career. Highly-touted freshman Joe Wieskamp produced eight points and four rebounds before suffering an ankle injury in the second half against Michigan State and his status for Thursday's clash is unknown.

TIP-INS

1. The home team has won 13 of the last 15 meetings in the rivalry.

2. Iowa State is 16-4 in December games under Steve Prohm.

3. Iowa has won 55 of its last 59 non-conference home games since 2012.

Opening Line Report - Week 14
Joe Williams

It was a strange set of games in Week 13. Underdogs were hitting all over the board, including a double-digit underdog, the Arizona Cardinals, winning outright. Joey Public got buried last Sunday, as generally they play the favorites and that wasn't the place to invest your money. The books, who were hammered a few weeks ago, certainly could use a comeback and Week 13 was it. Rarely, if ever, will books have multiple poor weeks in a season. However, there are plenty of weeks when they clean up, and if they didn't have those weeks frequently Las Vegas would like more like Fargo or Little Rock. In other words, you might beat the house here and there. You might end up ahead at times. Overall, however, the house will end up on top, and that's how Vegas was made.

(Consensus Odds as of Tuesday)

Jacksonville Jaguars at Tennessee Titans (-4.5, 37.5)

The Jaguars surprised the Indianapolis Colts by a 6-0 score last Sunday in Jacksonville, the lowest-scoring game of the 2018 National Football League regular season. Vegas isn't feeling the Jags, as they're moderate 'dogs in the Music City. Westgate SuperBook opened the Titans at -5, but the public is apparently feeling the Jags, as the line is down to -4. Several other books opened the Jags at -4 1/2 and it's also down to -4, and more movement might be likely. The total is on the move, too, ever so slightly. Southpoint opened the game at 38, and it's down to 37 1/2 there and at a majority of the other shops.

Jacksonville at Tennessee (-4.5, 37.5), 8:20 pm ET, FOX/NFLN

Jacksonville’s defense has the potential to make Blake Bortles look awful by helping pull off a second straight divisional upset as their demoted former starter again watches from the sideline. Cody Kessler benefited as the team’s strongest unit did the heavy lifting in a 6-0 win over the Colts that replaced the Titans-Jags Week 3 meeting as the lowest-scoring game of the season.

Andrew Luck underwent an on-field root canal in dealing with Jacksonville’s pressure up front and the excellence of a rejuvenated defensive backfield, throwing for 248 yards and getting intercepted once in being shutout.

With corner A.J. Bouye back to help a healthier Jalen Ramsey and impressive D.J. Hayden, the Jaguars again boast one of the league’s strongest defensive backfields. Up front, they’ll have to replace starting nose tackle Abry Jones off the unit that blanked the Colts but are still well-equipped to make life difficult for Tennessee. For more on who is in and out, read the injury report below.

Since the best the Jaguars can finish is 8-8, all success they have from this point on won’t affect their playoff chances but will certainly have a toll on the postseason picture. After snapping their seven-game losing streak by ending Indy’s five-game unbeaten run, the Jags now take aim at playing spoiler against Tennessee, which is one of four teams on the outside looking in of the AFC’s top-six, trailing the Ravens by a game.

Jacksonville will now try and snap a winless run of four games in Nashville and a 2-12 run against AFC South Division foes.

The Titans got back to .500 against the Jets on Sunday, but only barely. Despite facing veteran backup QB Josh McCown and a banged-up New York squad that hadn’t won since mid-October, Tennessee needed Marcus Mariota to find Corey Davis with 36 seconds left to cap a comeback from a 22-13 fourth-quarter deficit.

Mariota has shown a knack for saving his best for last but contributed greatly to digging last week’s hole by throwing a pick-six. He led the Titans in rushing and threw for 286 yards to wrap up his 12th career game-winning drive, which does inspire confidence since style points won’t matter against Jacksonville. The Titans have won five of six over the Jags (see series history below) and have found ways to overcome Bortles and a defense that has been among the NFL’s best in low-scoring games and shootouts no matter who the coaches have been, so Doug Marrone will have his work cut out for him on the road with a team that has won only one true road game all season, beating the Giants 20-15 in Week 1.

The Titans are 4-1 in Nashville and own conquests of the Texans, Eagles and Patriots, so they perform in front of the paying customers. They’ll have to deal with nemesis Leonard Fournette, who returns from a one-game suspension and may be the healthiest he’s been all season since he’s been bothered by injuries most of the way.

Being unable to count on him early forced Jacksonville to trade for Carlos Hyde, who is also available alongside T.J. Yeldon. Kessler comes into this one averaging 153 passing yards in his two appearances, so count on the run game being the staple of the Jags’ attack. His longest completion spans 23 yards, so it’s likely you’ll see a run defense that ranks 19th against the ground game and has been the weak link in that unit tested exhaustively.

Count on the Titans challenging Kessler to make plays in the red zone since first-year head coach Mike Vrabel and defensive coordinator Dean Pees have been especially stingy inside the 20-yard line, holding opponents to the lowest touchdown rate in the NFL (44.1 percent).

Fournette has run for 95 yards in each of his last two games, finding the end zone three times in losses to the Steelers and Bills before his one-game suspension. He wasn’t in the lineup in Week 3 and ran for just 109 yards on 33 carries in last season’s losses, scoring once. Getting him going in addition to another strong defensive outing is the ideal formula for the Jags to pull this offense.

Tennessee’s current schedule isn’t daunting, so it has an opportunity to run the table if it can keep the ball rolling by picking up where it left off in Sunday’s fourth quarter. The Titans’ lone road remaining game will be Dec. 16 vs. the Giants and their final contests will come at home against the Redskins and Colts, who each enter Week 14 at 6-6 on the heels of brutal offensive showings.

That would seem to play right into Tennessee’s wheelhouse, but a running game that was non-existent last week must emerge and Mariota has to stay healthy. Per Titans Online expert Jim Wyatt, the former No. 2 pick has gone 128-for-174, throwing for 1,656 yards, eight TDs and five interceptions in his six previous primetime games, so we’ll see if he’s up to this latest challenge. The offensive line in front of him was reshuffled on the run against the Jets as Corey Levin came into play center, so we’ll see if that change remains in place and guard Quinton Spain in relegated to a backup role.

Jacksonville also made changes in addition to the high-profile one where Bortles was left stuck holding a clipboard, starting Patrick Omameh at guard up front notorious former Giants flop Ereck Flowers started at tackle for Josh Walker. Ronnie Harrison started at safety ahead of Barry Church while Marcell Dareus moved inside, so there will again likely be some in-game variables.

As far as the elements go, snow fell in Nashville on Wednesday but we should see clear conditions and temperatures in the high 30s for this Thursday night clash.

Jacksonville Jaguars
Season win total: 9 (Over -130, Under +110)
Odds to win AFC South: OFF to OFF
Odds to win AFC: 2000/1 to 900/1
Odds to win Super Bowl: 5000/1 to 2000/1

Tennessee Titans
Season win total: 8 (Over -110, Under -110)
Odds to win AFC South: 25/1 to OFF
Odds to win AFC: 90/1 to 90/1
Odds to win Super Bowl: 200/1 to 200/1

LINE MOVEMENT

Those who faded the Jaguars to open the season are already planning what to do with their winnings. Jacksonville can no longer reach its projected season win total and will pay out +140 at Westgate by not making the postseason. The Titans are still alive to go over on wins and reach the playoffs at +145, so those who went 'no' on them playing on in January at -170 are hoping for help from the Jags here since a Tennessee loss and Houston weekend win would give the Texans the AFC South.

When the season began, Jacksonville was a 7/4 favorite to win the division, so its flop is very real. The Texans were 2/1, Tennessee was 7/2 and the Colts brought up the rear in terms of expectations at 4/1. The Texans moved from 1/10 entering Week 13 to that future coming off the board altogether as a foregone conclusion. The Jags do still have life, but placing anything on them from a futures standpoint is flushing cash down the toilet. The Titans' odds didn't budge after they survived the Jets.

As far as this matchup is concerned, the Titans were a 6.5-point favorite when the Westgate's early numbers were announced last week so the Jags' impressive shutout of the Colts altered things. Westgate opened at -5 but quickly came down to 4.5, which is where most shops opened and where it currently is available in many places. Tennessee -4 was available most of the week, but there is now a lot of -5 out there.

Tennessee is in the -225/-230 range on the money line. If you like the road 'dog outright, a payout on the Jags win will get you +190 to +200 depending on where you wager.

INJURY CONCERNS

Jacksonville's biggest absence with Fournette available again is the aforementioned Jones, who hasn't practiced due to a shin injury and will force more reshuffling from the Jags on the defensive front. DE Calais Campbell did overcome an ankle injury and has been cleared, while Ramsey (knee) is also off the injury repot. Jacksonville backup corners Tre Herndon and Quenton Meeks will join LB Lerentee McCray in the mix, so the Jags have plenty of ammo on that side of the ball.

The Titans will be without safety Dane Cruikshank and RB David Flueleen due to knee injuries but should be fine without both. Key safeties Kenny Vaccaro and Kevin Byard, DT Jaurrell Casey, corners Adoree Jackson and Malcolm Butler and WR Tajae Sharpe are all good to go. Pass-rusher Derrick Morgan is listed as questionable.

TOTAL TALK

The ‘over/under’ for this matchup opened at 38 and most betting shops are holding a number of 37 ½ as of Thursday morning. Weekly “Total Talk” writer Chris David of VegasInsider.com offered up his thoughts on this matchup:

It’s rare to see totals close in the thirties in the NFL these days and this will be the ninth total that will be in this neighborhood this season and the ‘over’ has gone 5-3 in the first eight totals that closed below 40.

One of those ‘under’ winners came between this pair as the Titans defeated the Jaguars 9-6 on Sept. 23 and the low side (39 ½) was never in doubt. This was a game dominated by the defensive units as neither offense could move the football and the pair combined for 465 total yards.

Normally I would use a vice versa handicap and lean to the high side based off the low-scoring result in the first meeting but it’s a tough argument to make. Especially with Cody Kessler under center for Jacksonville. While he wasn’t horrible last week against the Colts, expecting him to move the chains or make big plays seems like a long shot against a Titans scoring defense (18.6 PPG) that has been solid at home.

Even though Tennessee and Jacksonville both enter this game with 7-5 ‘under’ records, two of the last three meetings in Nashville have gone ‘over’ the number. One of those outcomes occurred in a Thursday contest (2016) as Tennessee ran past Jacksonville 36-22 and the ‘over’ (43 ½) connected. Including that outcome, the Titans have watched the ‘over’ cash in their last five primetime games and that includes two results this season (both on MNF).

Road underdogs haven’t played well in the midweek matchup this season but I’m expecting a competitive game. If my lean is right that the Jaguars can hang around, then it has to be a low-scoring affair. Instead of leaning to the game total, I believe the better play is the Tennessee team total under (21 ½) on Thursday.

RECENT MEETINGS (Tennessee 5-1 SU, 5-1 ATS last 8; OVER 4-2)

9/23/18 Tennessee 9-6 at Jacksonville (TEN +10, 39)
12/31/17 Tennessee 15-10 vs. Jacksonville (TEN -2.5, 40)
9/17/17 Tennessee 37-16 at Jacksonville (TEN -1, 42)
12/24/16 Jacksonville 38-17 vs. Tennessee (JAX +4, 44)
10/27/16 Tennessee 36-22 vs. Jacksonville (TEN -3, 43.5)
12/6/15 Tennessee 42-39 vs. Jacksonville (TEN -2.5, 43.5)

NEXT WEEK'S NUMBERS POSTED

Westgate Vegas opens its advance lines for the following week on Tuesdays and Week 15 currently has the Titans listed as an 1.5-point road favorite at the Giants. The Jaguars will be back home in another spoiler role as they host the Mark Sanchez-led 'Skins and are an early 6.5-point favorite.

Inside the Paint - Thursday
Chris David

If you bet the favorites in the NBA last night, then accept our congratulations as the ‘chalk’ went 10-0 straight up and 8-1-1 against the spread. The ‘over’ went 7-3 and that combination usually buries the folks behind the counter.

Tonight’s card isn’t easy but we’re focusing on a quality matchup between Houston and Utah, who met in the second round of last year’s Western Conference playoffs.

Houston (11-12 SU, 9-14 ATS) at Utah (12-13 SU, 12-13 ATS)

With a quarter of the season in the books, I don’t think many pundits would’ve expected both Houston and Utah to sit below .500 but that’s the case when the pair meet from Salt Lake City on Thursday. Injuries have played a toll on both teams and VegasInsider.com NBA expert Tony Mejia believes both clubs will get things together before the season really picks up in 2019.

He explained, “Donovan Mitchell hasn’t been healthy for most of the season and has had so many off nights that you might think he’s got a touch of Markelle Fultz’s Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. He opened December by shooting 1-for-7 from beyond the arc in a 102-100 loss to the Heat in which he missed 16 of 24 shots. Last season’s Rookie of the Year runner-up has had games where he’s gone 1-for-11 and 0-for-7 from 3-point range, so bouncing back to shoot 4-for-6 in Wednesday’s blowout win over the Spurs is a great sign for the Jazz, who have to be hoping this early-season slump comes to an end here shortly. Mitchell scored a season-best 38 points, hitting 14-for-25 shots in 100-89 win on Oct. 24 over Houston.”

“That outburst is a big deal because Mitchell only won one of nine games against Houston as a rookie, largely struggling as the Rockets swept the regular-season series before winning the Western Conference semifinal series 4-1. Getting their shooting guard going to ensure Chris Paul and James Harden have to work on the defensive end will determine whether the Jazz will hold serve at home and it bodes well that he’s done his best work thus far. Mitchell is shooting 35 percent from 3-point range in Salt Lake City as opposed to 29 percent on the road, so keep that in mind if you’re considering riding the Rockets or the under,” Mejia added.

The Rockets were listed as one-point underdogs in the October meeting Paul was suspended for that game due to his run-in with Rondo and the Lakers. For the rematch, Utah opened as a two-point home favorite and considering it was catching 4 ½ and six points in last year’s playoffs, it shows you the respect given to the Jazz from the oddsmakers or the lack of respect for the Rockets.

As Mejia mentioned, Houston got the better of Utah last year and that included a perfect 4-0 record both SU and ATS from Vivint Smart Home Arena. While that mark is impressive, the Rockets limp into this matchup with a dreadful road record (6-7 SU, 5-8 ATS) and that includes a 1-4 run heading into this game. On Monday, Houston dropped a 103-91 decision at Minnesota and it was only able to muster up nine points in the fourth quarter.

Backing Utah at home has been a great investment (3-6 SU, 3-6 ATS) but it is coming off 139-105 win over San Antonio on Tuesday as an eight-point ‘chalk’ while drilling 20-of-33 (61%) bombs from 3-point land. That victory improved the Jazz to 5-1 versus teams below .500 and while Houston is still considered a contender, it’s currently a losing club as noted above.

The total on this game opened 218 and dropped quickly to 216 ½ and I was surprised by the move. Utah has been a great ‘over’ team at home (8-1) and Houston has started to regain its form as an ‘over’ club too. Despite the scoring drought in the final 12 minutes against the T-Wolves on Monday, Houston was averaging 121.6 points per game in its previous eight games and that led to an 8-0 ‘over’ run.

After this game, the Rockets head to Dallas on Friday while the Jazz get a quick rematch at San Antonio on Sunday.

There are two other games on tap for Thursday and, based on the opening numbers, are expecting a pair of blowouts.

New York at Boston (-12 ½, Total 218 ½)

Quick revenge game for the Celtics, who lost to the Knicks 117-109 on Nov. 21 as 14 ½-point home favorites. Since that setback, Boston has won and covered four of its last five and the offense is finally coming together. The unit is averaging 117.6 PPG during this stretch and that’s helped the ‘over’ go 4-1. Despite owning a lowing record (8-17), the Knicks have returned profits for bettors (14-10-1 ATS) this season. The issue for New York is its defense (114.4 PPG) and if you’re taking the points, then you better hope they get into the 110-120 range offensively. Backing Boston as a home favorite (6-3 SU, 5-4 ATS) hasn’t been a smart decision but they have covered in five of their six wins. As a double-digit favorite this season, the Celtics have gone 2-2 both SU and ATS. Including the aforementioned upset at TD Garden a couple weeks ago, the Knicks are 1-5 SU and 2-3-1 ATS as double-digit underdogs. Total bettors should note that the ‘over’ has gone 5-1 in those games and we’ve seen the number for the rematch open a few points higher (218 ½ from 215 ½).

Phoenix at Portland (-14, Total 215)

I try not to back an underdog with the points unless I believe they can win the game outright and right now, I don’t see how you can justify taking Phoenix in this spot especially with both Devin Booker (hamstring) and TJ Warren (ankle) on the sidelines for the Suns. Portland could be missing CJ McCollum (ankle) as well tonight and making a case for the Trail Blazers is next to impossible. The club has dropped eight straight games ATS and they’re 2-6 straight up during this span. Portland has better home numbers (8-4 SU, 7-5 ATS) but its current form should have most passing tonight. For what it’s worth, the Suns have gone 1-7 SU and 4-4 ATS as double-digit underdogs this season. The Blazers have won seven straight against the Suns in this series but they’re just 3-4 ATS.

1* Free Pick on Charlotte 49ers +10.5
This is just too many points for the Demon Deacons to be laying against a capable opponent like Charlotte, who already has a win over Oklahoma State on its resume. Wake Forest brought in a lot of new faces and it's been a work in progress on the court.
The Demon Deacons' only win by more than 10 points is a 12-point victory against North Carolina A&T and they were favored by 21.5. They have losses to the likes of St. Joseph's, Houston Baptist and Richmond. They only beat CS-Fullerton and Western Carolina by 7-points a piece.
The offense has been underwhelming at times for Wake and the defense has not been good. Charlotte is a big dog here because they struggle offensively (59.3 ppg), but they play really good defense and should be able to attack this Decons defense enough to keep it within the number.
Wake Forest is a mere 7-21 ATS in their last 28 games, 2-7 ATS in their last 9 non-conference games and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 vs a team that's won fewer than 40% of their games. Take Charlotte!

NCAA-B | Maryland vs Purdue
Play on: Maryland +8½ -105 at 5Dimes

Dave’s Thursday Free Play:
1* on Maryland +8.5
The Key: I’m surprised the Purdue Boilermakers are such big favorites over Maryland tonight given that this is a rebuilding year for them with just one returning starter, while the Terrapins have three starters back. Purdue has already lost 3 games this season, losing by 6 to VA Tech on a neutral, by 1 at Florida State and by 19 at Michigan. They haven’t beaten a single worthy opponent and sit at 5-3. Maryland is 7-1 with its only loss coming to a Top 5 team in Virginia by a final of 71-76. That effort showed they could play with anyone. And after losing to Purdue by 5 at home and by 8 on the road in their two meetings last year, the Terrapins clearly want to exact some revenge. And that Purdue team was much better than this 2018-19 version, yet they didn’t win either meeting by more than 8 points. The Terrapins are 14-3 ATS after having won 4 of their last 5 games over the past 3 seasons. The Terrapins are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 road games off 3 or more consecutive home games. The Boilermakers are 7-18-2 ATS in their last 27 vs. Big Ten opponents, and 4-11 ATS in their last 15 home games. Take Maryland.

Take Under the Total in the game between the Maryland Terrapins and the Purdue Boilermakers. Maryland (7-1) looks to build off their 66-59 win over Penn State where they were 6.5-point favorites. The Terrapins have then played 6 of their last 8 games Under the Total after a point spread win. Maryland has also played 5 of their last 7 games Under the Total on the road. Purdue (5-3) has lost three of their last four games after their 76-57 loss at Michigan as a 6.5-point underdog. The Boilermakers have then played 5 of their last 6 games Under the Total after a straight-up loss. Purdue has also seen the Under go 14-6-1 in their last 21 games in Big Ten play. Take the Under. Best of luck — Frank.

Scott "The Bulldog" Rickenbach NHL Game #9 Thursday Free Pick Montreal Canadiens Money Line (-) @ Ottawa Senators @ 7:35 ET - The Canadiens are expected to have Carey Price between the pipes and he is 23-9-5 (with three shutouts!) and a sparkling .922 save percentage and 2.32 goals against average against the Senators in his career. Ottawa is likely to counter with Craig Anderson in the crease and he is only 12-12-3 with a rather unimpressive .895 save percentage and a 3.20 goals against average against the Habs in his career. Montreal did lose an outdoor game at Ottawa last season but in their last two games in this building they've outscored the Senators by a margin of 11 to 7. Also, with their 5-2 win on home ice Tuesday, the Canadiens have won their last two home meetings with the Sens by a combined score of 9 to 3. The point is that, even though this game is at the Canadian Tire Centre, the Habs for the most part have had the Senators number in recent meetings (the outdoor game being the only ugly loss). I also like the goalie edge here as the Canadiens have allowed 3 goals or less (and an average of 2.5 goals) in 6 straight games! Conversely, the Senators have allowed 4 or more goals in 15 of their last 21 games! The Habs should prove well worth laying the short price on the road in this one. Free Pick MONTREAL

These teams just faced each other on Tuesday, at Montreal. I backed the Canadiens in that one and they rewarded me with a 5-2 victory. This evening's rematch is in Ottawa though, where the Sens are much tougher to beat. Also, the Habs are just 1-4 (-3.2) when off a win by more than a goal. Going back further finds them at a money-burning 19-29 (-14.6) in that situation the past couple of seasons. While the Canadiens have dominated them in Montreal, the Sens have won the last two meetings here in the nation's capital. At an underdog price, consider revenge-minded Ottawa.

NCAA-B | Iowa State vs Iowa
Play on: Iowa State -2½ -108 at 5Dimes

Jack’s Free Pick Thursday: Iowa State -2.5
The Iowa State Cyclones are a legit contender in the Big 12 this season. They have three newcomers this year who are all contributing in a big way. Marial Shayok (19.4 PPG, 6.0 RPG), Michael Jacobson (16.8 PPG, 8.0 RPG) and Talen Horton-Tucker (14.5 PPG, 6.0 RPG) are all new this year for the Cyclones, and they are three of the better players in the Big 12 already.
Plus the Cyclones got back two key players from last year’s team from eligibility issues last time out. Cameron Lard (12.6 PPG, 8.1 RPG last year) and Zoran Talley Jr. (7.5 PPG, 4.0 RPG) both started for the Cyclones last year, and they should both be more comfortable in their second games back. The Cyclones haven’t needed them or Lindell Wigginton, last year’s leading scorer. They are off to a 7-1 start this season with their only loss coming to Arizona on a neutral. All seven wins have come by double-digits.
The Iowa Hawkeyes have been grossly overvalued here of late. They are 0-4 ATS in their last four games overall. They only beat a bad Pitt team by a single point, 69-68, at home as 11-point favorites three games ago. Then they lost to Wisconsin 66-72 as 2-point home dogs before getting blown out 68-90 at Michigan State as 11-point dogs.
Iowa State is 9-1 ATS after scoring 80 points or more in two straight games over the past two seasons. Iowa is 5-13 ATS as an underdog over the past two years. The Hawkeyes are 2-10 ATS vs. good defensive teams that allow 39% shooting or less over the last three years. Iowa is 18-37-2 ATS in its last 57 games following a loss. The Cyclones are 22-6 ATS in their last 28 road games off three or more consecutive home games. Bet Iowa State Thursday.

10* FREE NBA PICK (Celtics -13)
I'll take my chances here laying the big number with Boston, who we know is the far superior team and isn't going to be overlooking this matchup. That's because two weeks ago the Celtics lost at home to the Knicks 117-109 as a 14.5-point favorite. As you can see from that line, we are getting a better number here. That served as a wake-up call for Boston, who has won 4 of 5 and 3 straight, including an impressive 118-109 win at Minnesota last time out. Note that game against the Timberwolves was on Saturday, so they are playing on a solid 4 days of rest. Knicks have been ice cold from the field of late, shooting 41% or worse in 4 of their last 5. Celtics were a dog at Minnesota and are 9-1 ATS off an upset win as a road underdog. They are also 25-7 ATS in their last 32 when revenging a loss were they allowed 100 or more points. Give me Boston -13!

My money is on the Celtics to cash in a cover here at home against the Knicks. These two recently played at Boston and the Knicks pulled off a massive upset, taking down the Celtics 117-109 as a 14.5-point dog. Needless to say New York is going to have Boston's full attention this time around and the Celtics are playing much better basketball than they were when these two teams last met. Boston has won and covered 3 straight and have really dominated in all 3. The offense has been outstanding, as they have scored at least 118 in all 3. Knicks have been playing better, but are simply outclassed and will get the best the Celtics have to offer this time around. Bet the Celtics -12.5!

Pepperdine consistently shows a propensity to play down to their opponents.
PEPPERDINE is 4-12 ATS when playing against a team with a losing record over the last 2 seasons.
Pepperdine has also been unable or unwilling to take advantage of weak defensive sides. PEPPERDINE is 2-9 ATS versus poor defensive teams - shooting pct defense of 45% or more over the last 2 seasons.
Pepperdine is off a loss at home last time out, which is not a good omen, as they seem to continue their negative output production in the follow up , going just 4-13 ATS off a home loss over the last 3 seasons and are 2-13 ATS in road games after playing 3 consecutive home games.
Waves are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400.Waves are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games following three or more consecutive home games.Waves are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games vs. a team with a losing straight up record.Waves are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 vs. Big West.
Meanwhile, the UC Riverside The Highlanders have been explosive from behind the arc this season as their .355 3pt shooting percentage leads the Big West and eight different players have hit from downtown and are dangerous home underdogs here vs a side that has yet to win on the road this season.

NHL | Predators vs Canucks
Play on: Predators -139 at betonline

My free play is on the Nas Predators at 10:05 ET.
The Nashville Predators open a two-game trip through Western Canada in Vancouver. Norris Trophy-winning defenseman P.K. Subban and center Kyle Turris plus wingers Filip Forsberg and Viktor Arvidsson (thumb) are all on injured reserve. However, the 19-8-1 Preds remain in first place in the ultra-tough Central Division with 39 points. As for the Vancouver Canucks, they have fallen on hard times since a 10-6-1 start. Vancouver lost 3-2 to Minnesota on Tuesday for its fourth straight loss, all at home. The Canucks have now gone 1-10-2 over their last 13 games.
Nashville goaltender Pekka Rinne is playing like the reigning Vezina Trophy winner that he is, sporting a 12-4-1 record with league bests of a 1.81 GAA and .935 SP. He has not allowed more than three goals in any of his 19 appearances this season. Forsberg has a team-high 14 goals while Arvidsson scored eight in 13 games before his injury. in all, the four injured players have accounted for 29 of the team's 90 goals scored. Ryan Hartman (seven goals) and Kevin Fiala (five) have joined the top line centered by Johansen (team highs of 24 points, which includes 19 assists). Roman Josi (five goals, 19 points), Mattias Ekholm (three, 17) and Ryan Ellis (two, 13) provide offensive support from the blue line.
Vanncouver (11-16-3) has failed to make the playoffs in each of the last three seasons and is sinking in the Pacific Division. The Canucks will be looking for just their second win in 14 games. No one has stood out on offense over the last 13 games. Nioklay Goldobin, a healthy scratch against the Wild, Bo Horvat, Tyler Motte and rookie star Elias Petterson each have three goals. Vancouver ranks 23 in scoring at 2.77 GPG. Rookie Elias Pettersson burst out of the gate with 10 goals and 17 points in his first 11 career games but has only three goals and six points in his last 13 contests. Bo Horvat paces the team with 25 points and his 12 goals are one behind Pettersson for the club lead.
Nashville began the 2018-19 campaign by reeling off eight straight regulation wins on the road but the club has gone 0-3-1 away from home since then. However, the Canucks offer a great opportunity to end the team's mini-slide. The Canucks' defense allows 3.43 GPG (27th) and Jacob Markstrom is 0-2-1 with a. 3.70 GAA and an .895 save percentage in his career against Nashville. As for Anders Nilsson, he surrendered a career-worst seven goals in a home loss to the Predators on Dec. 13, 2017. Also, Nilsson has lost six straight starts while logging an .884 save percentage.Pick your poison, Vancouver. With Rinne expected to be in net, Nashville is the play.
Good luck...Larry
