Alabama-Clemson Part IV matchups
Associated Press

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) Clemson and Alabama are playing in the College Football Playoff for the fourth straight season, and the third time for the national championship.

The winner Monday will become the first 15-0 FBS champion.

With the help of SEC Network analyst Cole Cubelic, a former Auburn offensive lineman, a breakdown of some of the key matchups that could decide Tide-Tigers Part IV.

CLEMSON ON LINE

There are few one-on-one matchups where Alabama is ever going to be at a disadvantage. Clemson's defensive line might be good enough to capitalize on some small vulnerability even without suspended 340-pound run stuffer Dexter Lawrence.

Tigers All-America defensive tackle Christian Wilkins against Alabama left guard Lester Cotton is a place where the Tigers can win one-on-one.

''Wilkins is a player who has really good quickness inside. Could be very disruptive against a player who was benched in the middle of the season for a younger player that came in and sort of took his spot and is now suspended and not going to play,'' Cubelic said.

Deonte Brown was suspended for an undisclosed NCAA violation, Alabama coach Nick Saban has said.

Alabama right tackle Jedrick Wills has occasionally had some problems in pass protection. The Tide might need to provide some help for the sophomore to deal with Clemson's defensive ends, whether it's All-American Clelin Ferrell, Cotton Bowl defensive MVP Austin Bryant or freshman Xavier Thomas, who looks like Clemson's next great pass rusher.

Clemson leads the nation with 52 sacks, led by Ferrell with 11+ and Bryant with eight, including two against Notre Dame. The Tigers also lead the nation in yards per play allowed at 4.05.

Cubelic said he would expect Clemson to rely on the defensive line to hold its own against the run and commit more players to coverage. It sounds weird to say of Alabama, but challenging this Tide team to run the ball is probably the way to go.

''They're kind of greedy,'' Cubelic said of Alabama's offense, led by quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. ''They know they're really good throwing the ball. They know they have an elite quarterback and elite wide receivers. Why not go out there and pitch it around?''

Tagovailoa, the Heisman runner-up, has a 205.19 passer efficiency rating, which would break Baker Mayfield's single-season record from last year.

Senior Albert Huggins played well filling in for Lawrence against Notre Dame, but the junior is more likely to be missed this week.

''He's probably one of the best linemen in college football, no doubt, in terms of his production and his performance,'' Saban said. ''He's played really well against us in the past.''

Q RATING

If there was a defensive player with a case to the win the Heisman Trophy this season, Alabama's Quinnen Williams was the guy. He has hardly been slowed down and it's doubtful Clemson center Justin Falcinelli, an All-ACC player, and guards John Simpson, Gage Cervenka and Sean Pollard will be a physical match for the future top-five NFL draft pick.

Williams, an All-American and Outland Trophy winner, plays differently than the recent dominant Tide nose guards such as Terrence Cody and Daron Payne. Williams often lines up in one gap, and then shoots into another gap or works his way from one shoulder of a blocker to the other. Clemson uses a lot of zone- and gap-blocking schemes, where its linemen are assigned to block a particular space rather than a man.

''The scheme is not very friendly to handle not only a guy as talented as Quinnen Williams, but the way he plays,'' Cubelic said.

The 295-pound Williams had 18 tackles for loss, including eight sacks.

FLUSTERING THE FRESHMAN

Clemson freshman quarterback Trevor Lawrence has all the physical gifts. From that standpoint, he is ready for Alabama. The challenge against the Tide for Lawrence will be as much mental as physical.

Alabama's overwhelming talent sometimes overshadows just how well-coached the players are. The Tide doesn't make many mistakes and Saban's defenses throw a lot at quarterbacks.

''The windows are going to close faster,'' Cubelic said. ''The pressure is going to be applied more quickly. The decisions are going to have to be made faster.''

Lawrence has completed 65.5 percent of his passes, with 27 touchdown passes and only four interceptions.

An underrated part of Lawrence's game is his mobility, but he hasn't used it much until late in the season. He has 86 yards on 10 carries in the last three regular-season games. Swinney said he'd like to see Lawrence take off more.

''Sometimes people will drop and play coverage and receivers will have to work and work and work to try to get open and he's confident he can rip it there,'' Swinney said.

Because Alabama is so good up front with Williams, Raekwon Davis and Isaiah Buggs (team-high 9.5 sacks), it is likely Lawrence will see a lot of seven- and eight-man coverage and get some opportunities to run.

''If Alabama is going to give you anything, you damn well better take it,'' Cubelic said.

Alabama's excellent pass rush has helped bring along a secondary that relies on talented but inexperienced corners such as freshman Patrick Surtain.

''I don't know how good the Alabama secondary is,'' Cubelic said. ''And I don't think anybody else really knows.''

Clemson has a versatile group of receivers with Tee Higgins (11 touchdowns) and Justyn Ross (eight touchdowns) both checking in at 6-foot-4, Amari Rogers (four touchdowns), who is built like a running back, and senior Hunter Renfrow, who has scored four touchdowns in two previous championship games against Alabama.

Clemson Tigers vs. Alabama Crimson Tide Preview and Predictions 2019-01-07

NCAAF Predictions 4th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/04/2019

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME STORYLINES

1. Two stalwarts of the College Football Playoff era square off for a fourth consecutive year when No. 2 Clemson takes on top-ranked Alabama for the national title Monday in Santa Clara, California. After splitting a pair of championship-game matchups following the 2015 and 2016 seasons, the Crimson Tide dispatched the Tigers 24-6 in the semifinals last year, and both emerged as early favorites to reach the title game. "I think as the season evolved, just knowing how well Clemson played all year long and how they were pretty dominant in their league, it was no surprise to me that they would end up where they are right now," Alabama coach Nick Saban told reporters. "You're always looking at the next game and not looking too far ahead and all that, but it's no surprise to me that they're in the championship game, as well."

2. The first two meetings - Alabama's 45-40 win in January 2016 and Clemson's 35-31 triumph in January 2017 - were classics that went down to the wire, and both coaches expect a similar outcome between two evenly matched teams on Monday. "When you look at this game, I think both teams are kind of mirror images of each other, to be honest with you - really good defenses, dynamic quarterbacks, very talented running backs and explosive skill, and just kind of built in the trenches. We're so similar," Clemson coach Dabo Swinney told reporters. "So it's going to come down to just execution and mentally being sharp and making those two or three plays that you don't know when they're coming. So you just have to truly play every play like it's the play." Both teams rank in the top five nationally in total offense, scoring offense and scoring defense, while Clemson is fifth Alabama 13th in total defense.

3. Clemson will be without star defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence, tight end Braden Galloway and offensive lineman Zach Giella for a second straight contest after the trio tested positive for ostarine prior to the national semifinal game. Galloway and Giella are reserves who play sparingly, but Lawrence is a critical piece of the Tigers' dominant defensive line. Alabama suspended tight end Kedrick James and offensive linemen Elliot Baker and Deonte Brown for unspecified NCAA violations prior to the semifinal game, but the latter (five starts) is the only one of the three who played a key role this season.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN. LINE: Alabama -5.5

ABOUT CLEMSON (14-0): Swinney made the bold decision to go with Trevor Lawrence as his starting quarterback four games into the season, and the move has paid off as the freshman has piled up 2,933 passing yards with 27 touchdowns and four interceptions. Lawrence's big arm gives the Tigers a downfield threat on every play, but running back Travis Etienne (1,572 yards, 22 TDs) is the workhorse on offense. Despite losing Dexter Lawrence, the defense still was dominant in last week's 30-3 victory over Notre Dame (as the Clemson were -10.5 point favorite at intertops) and possesses four players who have recorded at least 10 tackles for loss, including Clelin Ferrell (18 tackles for loss, 11.5 sacks).

ABOUT ALABAMA (14-0): The Crimson Tide have evolved from the team that was content to run the ball and slug out a low-scoring win, as quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (3,671 passing yards, 41 TDs, four interceptions) leads a high-powered offense. Alabama's best shot at attacking the Tigers is through the air as five receivers have made at least six touchdown receptions, with Jerry Jeudy (1,176 receiving yards, 13 TDs) leading the way. Alabama's defense might be the most susceptible unit on the field, having given up 454 and 507 total yards, respectively, in its last two games, so getting stops in the red zone and forcing turnovers will be key against Clemson's explosive offense.

PREDICTION: Clemson 37, Alabama 34

San Antonio Spurs vs. Detroit Pistons Preview and Predictions 2019-01-07

NBA Predictions 6th January 2019 by Gracenote
Spurs vs. Pistons Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 01/06/2019

The San Antonio Spurs are quietly one of the hottest teams in the NBA with wins in four straight and 12 of their last 15 games as they begin to sneak up the Western Conference standings. The Spurs will try to stay sharp when they begin a stretch with seven of 10 on the road by visiting the Detroit Pistons on Monday.

San Antonio ripped through a three-game homestand with wins over Boston, Toronto and Memphis, capped by Saturday's 108-88 drubbing of the Grizzlies. "They're just relentless," Memphis small forward and former Spur Kyle Anderson told reporters. "They've got high-character guys over there. They didn't get off to a good start, but they stuck with it as a team and they're obviously doing well right now, so that's going to pay off." The Pistons went the opposite way and followed up a hot start to the season with a slow decline that has them 4-13 over the last 17 contests, including a 110-105 home loss to Utah on Saturday in which they held an 18-point lead after the first quarter. "Great teams go from an 18-point lead to a 28-point lead, 25, and they keep it there," Detroit forward Blake Griffin told reporters. "We just haven't gotten to that level yet where we put our foot on people's throats and don't let up. That's the next step for us."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Southwest (San Antonio), FS Detroit

ABOUT THE SPURS (23-17): San Antonio tends to focus its offense around DeMar DeRozan, LaMarcus Aldridge and Rudy Gay, but point guard Derrick White stepped up to join that trio during the homestand. White, who averages 7.6 points on 47.3 percent shooting, averaged 20 points in the three wins while going 24-of-29 from the floor, including 5-of-6 from 3-point range. White is forming a solid combination at the point guard spot with veteran reserve Patty Mills, who scored in double figures in each of the three games of the homestand and knocked down 3-of-4 from beyond the arc in Saturday's triumph.

ABOUT THE PISTONS (17-20): Detroit committed 14 of its 18 turnovers in the second half on Saturday and let the first-quarter lead dry up quickly as the second unit struggled. "Utah's one of those teams - they're so well coached," Griffin told reporters. "They just have veteran guys who've been in playoff situations. They just grind it. Early on, we did a good job of getting in their air space, making it tough for them to get in the paint and get easy shots. And they just kept at it. Turnovers at the end killed us." Griffin was the bright spot with 34 points, 10 rebounds and five assists and is averaging 29.7 points over the last three contests.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Pistons C Zaza Pachulia (leg) sat out the last three games and is day-to-day.

2. DeRozan is averaging 10.8 rebounds over the last four games.

3. Detroit snapped a six-game losing streak in the series with a 93-79 home victory in the last meeting on Dec. 30, 2017.

PREDICTION: Spurs 107, Pistons 98

Brooklyn Nets vs. Boston Celtics Preview and Predictions 2019-01-07

NBA Predictions 6th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/06/2019

The Boston Celtics will try to extend a series of streaks when they continue a four-game homestand against the surging Brooklyn Nets on Monday. The Celtics have won the first two games of the homestand to extend their winning streak at TD Garden to four in a row, and they own nine consecutive victories over the Nets, a run that extends over three years.

Boston hopes to have star point guard Kyrie Irving back for this one after he missed the last two games with an eye issue, but the squad has barely missed their playmaker in consecutive wins over Minnesota and Dallas, posting a season-high 35 assists in the 114-93 triumph over the Mavericks on Friday. "We've really tried to emphasize that all year," coach Brad Stevens told reporters of the ball distribution. "For the most part everybody was in a good rhythm and playing well together and seeking out the right shot. We've just got to keep doing that as much as possible." The Nets have taken the first two legs of their three-game road trip and they've won 12 of 15 overall after Sunday's 117-100 win at Chicago. Guard D'Angelo Russell stayed hot with 28 points as Brooklyn improved to 10-10 on the road.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, YES (Brooklyn), NBC Sports Boston

ABOUT THE NETS (20-21): DeMarre Carroll posted his second straight 20-point effort and fellow reserve Shabazz Napier added 18 as Brooklyn's bench outscored Chicago's substitutes by a 52-29 margin. "We're getting contributions from guys with a couple of guys out," coach Kenny Atkinson told the media. "DeMarre's really coming back to life and had a huge game tonight. Shabazz, excellent, so we're getting contributions from everybody. I think that's important." Russell is averaging 26.5 points over his last four games and 9.3 assists during the team's three-game winning streak.

ABOUT THE CELTICS (23-15): Irving's absence has given swingman Gordon Hayward more of an opportunity to step into the spotlight and the former All-Star responded with a season-high 35 points against the Timberwolves before falling two assists shy of a triple-double Friday. "It was fun," Hayward told reporters after finishing with 16 points, a season-high 11 rebounds and a season high-tying eight assists against the Mavericks. "I think when we have good spacing, we have talented players and it just makes the game easier. If you make the right read, everybody gets involved and it's fun." Terry Rozier started in place of Irving the last two games and is averaging 12 points, six assists and one turnover in that span.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Celtics SG Jaylen Brown is averaging 17 points on 63.5 percent shooting in 26 minutes over his last five games.

2. Nets C Jarrett Allen had 19 points on 6-of-8 shooting Sunday and posted his fifth straight game with exactly two blocked shots.

3. The teams meet three times in a span of 22 days this month before their fourth and final encounter March 30 in Brooklyn.

PREDICTION: Celtics 111, Nets 105

Memphis Grizzlies vs. New Orleans Pelicans Preview and Predictions 2019-01-07

NBA Predictions 6th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/06/2019

The New Orleans Pelicans are not where they want to be in the standings, but at least they are starting to win some games. The Pelicans will try to earn back-to-back wins for the first time since a three-game streak from Nov. 16-19 when they host the struggling Memphis Grizzlies on Monday.

New Orleans won three of its last five games and ended a two-game road trip with a dominating performance in a 133-98 victory at Cleveland on Saturday. "It can't just be a win and a one-time thing because it's Cleveland," Pelicans star forward Anthony Davis told reporters. "We have to do it next game and the game after that, in order to get to where we want to be." The Grizzlies are sliding with losses in five straight and 12 of the last 15 games, including a 108-88 setback to begin the road trip at San Antonio on Saturday. Memphis will play five of its next seven games on the road, with trips to Miami, Houston, Boston and Toronto to come over the next two weeks.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FS South (Memphis), FS New Orleans

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (18-21): Memphis committed 21 turnovers against the Spurs and was outscored 37-19 in the second quarter to let the game slip away. "When you're playing a team that is this good, anytime you lose or miss out on possessions with opportunities for shots, it's hard to overcome," Grizzlies coach J.B. Bickerstaff told reporters. "And for us, we're not normally a high-turnover team, but they were active with their hands. Some of the decisions we made we could've been more certain with - some of the passes and spacing." Center Marc Gasol committed four turnovers in the loss and was held to six points on 2-of-9 shooting.

ABOUT THE PELICANS (18-22): New Orleans managed to take some of the things they worked on in practice into Saturday's game, and continuing that moving forward is the goal. "I think that is an important thing," Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry told reporters. "What we have to do is develop consistency on it. We can't do it this game and not do it the next game. We have to be able to take it from practice to the game situations and we have to be able to do it night after night after night, not just one night here and one night there." Davis and power forward Julius Randle each recorded a double-double in the win while point guard Jrue Holiday added 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Pelicans PF Nikola Mirotic (ankle) missed the last 11 games but could return during the two-game homestand.

2. Grizzlies SG Dillon Brooks (leg) left Saturday's contest and is day-to-day.

3. Memphis earned a 107-103 win at New Orleans on Dec. 7

Denver Nuggets vs. Houston Rockets Preview and Predictions 2019-01-07

NBA Predictions 6th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/06/2019

The Houston Rockets finally fell flat on Saturday with a 110-101 loss at the Portland Trail Blazers, but the chance to prove themselves against top teams in both conferences looms during a three-game homestand. The host Rockets will start by trying to pick off the Western Conference-leading Denver Nuggets on Monday.

Houston had a six-game winning streak come to an end with Saturday's setback and lost for just the second time in 11 games as superstar James Harden's run of 40-point games came to an end at five straight. "Honestly that streak is pretty cool for stats and whatnot, but honestly the win is more important," Harden, who finished with 38 points, told reporters. "So, came up short and now we've got another opportunity to go home and play Denver, who's playing exceptionally well. So, we've got to regroup." The Nuggets are winners of five straight and have their own superstar in center Nikola Jokic, who scored a season-high 39 points in Saturday's 123-110 victory over the Charlotte Hornets. "Tonight, I feel like he could've had 50 points," Denver coach Michael Malone told reporters of Jokic. "He missed a lot of chippies and bunnies around the basket, but 39 points, impacts the game in every way possible. And I think he understands for us to be the team that we all want to be, he has to be a big part of that and he has to be aggressive."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, Altitude (Denver), AT&T SportsNet Southwest (Houston)

ABOUT THE NUGGETS (26-11): Jokic got some help Saturday off the bench from shooting guard Gary Harris, who is being worked back into the rotation after missing nearly a month with a hip injury. Harris, who was starting for the team earlier in the season, played his third straight game since returning against the Hornets and filled up the box score with 17 points, six rebounds and five assists in 26 minutes while knocking down three 3-pointers. "I feel good," Harris told reporters. "I'm still taking it one day at a time and it's always good to get the win."

ABOUT THE ROCKETS (22-16): Harden joined Kobe Bryant and Allen Iverson as the only players with 40-plus points in five consecutive games over the last 50 years, and his string of 10 consecutive games with at least 35 points and five assists is an NBA record. "It's unbelievable now, you grade him on a sharp curve where if he gets 38, now if he doesn't get 40 it's like, 'well, what's wrong with you?'" Houston coach Mike D'Antoni told reporters of Harden. "He's gone up another level, and he'll stay up there. And that's why when people say, 'he can't continue on this tear,' yeah, he can, because he's doing it with ease, as long as he stays healthy." Harden leads the NBA in scoring at an average of 33.7 points and scored at least 30 in 12 consecutive contests.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Rockets C Clint Capela grabbed 21 rebounds in each of the last two games.

2. Nuggets PG Jamal Murray was held to eight points on 3-of-13 shooting on Saturday after going for 36 points in a win at Sacramento on Thursday.

3. Harden collected 22 points and 11 assists in a 109-99 win at Denver on Nov. 13 that extended Houston's winning streak in the series to eight straight.

Utah Jazz vs. Milwaukee Bucks Preview and Predictions 2019-01-07

NBA Predictions 6th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/06/2019

The Milwaukee Bucks missed a chance to establish themselves as the top team in the Eastern Conference and had a five-game winning streak come to an end with a 123-116 home loss to the Toronto Raptors on Saturday. The Bucks will try to finish off a six-game homestand strong when they host the Utah Jazz on Monday.

Milwaukee took the first four games of its homestand by an average of 21.3 points and held a double-digit lead in the first half against Toronto before falling. "I think we match up really well with them," Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo told reporters. "Obviously there's a chance for us to see them in the future in the playoffs. It's too far right now to talk about it. I don't think as a team we are a bit scared about the Raptors. They're obviously a really good team, but I think we match up really well with them. It was just a bad game for us tonight." The Jazz fell at Toronto to begin their four-game road trip but followed that with wins over Cleveland and Detroit to reach .500. Utah fell behind early against the Pistons on Saturday but turned up the defense and forced 14 turnovers in the second half to earn a 110-105 victory.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain (Utah), FS Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

ABOUT THE JAZZ (20-20): Shooting guard Donovan Mitchell scored 24 of his 26 points in the second half on Saturday, sparked by a heckling fan near the bench. "I just became more aggressive," Mitchell told reporters. "I stopped listening to the guy in the corner. He said something to me, and it really just snapped for me. I don't know what it was, and it shouldn't take somebody to say something to me for me to play how I did, but that's what happened." Mitchell, who added five assists and three steals at Detroit, snapped a string of three straight games scoring under 20 points.

ABOUT THE BUCKS (27-11): Antetokounmpo scored 43 points on 16-of-25 shooting and added 18 rebounds on Saturday while matching Toronto's physical play. "You know it's going to be a physical game before the game starts," Antetokounmpo told reporters. "Top two teams in the NBA going at it, they're not going to call fouls. You've got to know in the back of your head it's going to be physical. You've just got to play through it and not complain and hopefully, at the end of the day, you can get the benefit of the doubt." Antetokounmpo went 8-of-11 from the free-throw line in the loss and is shooting 69.6 percent from the stripe.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Bucks SF Khris Middleton handed out a season-high nine assists on Saturday.

2. Utah SF Thabo Sefolosha (hamstring) left Saturday's game and is day-to-day.

3. Milwaukee snapped a seven-game losing streak in the series with a 117-100 home win in the last meeting on Dec. 9, 2017.

Los Angeles Lakers vs. Dallas Mavericks Preview and Predictions 2019-01-07

NBA Predictions 6th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/06/2019

Like other teams before them, the Los Angeles Lakers are finding it hard to handle the loss of LeBron James, and they carry a season high-tying three-game losing streak into Monday's visit to the Dallas Mavericks. The Lakers are 1-5 since James was lost to a groin strain and they offered little resistance in a 108-86 loss at Minnesota on Sunday.

Power forward Kyle Kuzma (back) missed his second straight game for Los Angeles, which received only 34 points on 11-for-41 shooting from its starters. The Mavericks have played just two home games since Dec. 16 and are coming off a 1-3 road trip capped by a 106-100 loss at Philadelphia on Saturday. "At home, we're great," rookie Luke Doncic told reporters of his team's 15-3 home mark and 3-18 road record. "But we got to figure out the road. For sure we can do it. We have great guys. We just got to figure out things." Doncic had 14 points on 4-of-16 shooting in Saturday's loss.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, Spectrum SportsNet (Los Angeles), FS Southwest (Dallas)

ABOUT THE LAKERS (21-19): Los Angeles was outscored 35-19 in the first quarter Sunday after falling behind by 14 points through one period in Friday's home loss to the struggling New York Knicks, an ugly trend for a team low on weapons. "Offensively our guys were trying to play the right way, we just weren't making shots, but defensively it's unacceptable that we let that many points in," coach Luke Walton told reporters Sunday. "That's the second game in a row a team has come in in the first quarter and just scored at will." Lonzo Ball missed all four of his shots in 23 scoreless minutes at Minnesota while fellow guard Josh Hart is 5-for-23 from the field over the last two games.

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (18-21): A bright spot in the loss to Philadelphia was a 13-point, 11-rebound, eight-assist effort for rookie Jalen Brunson, who enjoyed a return trip to where he led Villanova to a pair of national championships. "(Brunson) was terrific all around," coach Rick Carlisle told reporters. "These homecoming games can be emotional and difficult and he looked like he was right at home. I was happy for him. He did a lot of very, very good things." Point guard Dennis Smith Jr. had a very different experience with a season-low two points and he's 5-for-17 from the floor over the last two contests.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Lakers won the first two meetings this season and have taken four in a row overall.

2. Los Angeles SF Brandon Ingram is 21-of-58 from the field - 0-of-4 from 3-point range - in January.

3. Mavericks rookie SG Ryan Broekhoff had a career-high 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting at Philadelphia.

PREDICTION: Mavericks 113, Lakers 106

New York Knicks vs. Portland Trail Blazers Preview and Predictions 2019-01-07

NBA Predictions 6th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/06/2019

After cooling off one of the hottest teams in the NBA, the Portland Trail Blazers take on one of the league's lesser squads when they host the New York Knicks on Monday. Behind 25 points and 15 rebounds from Jusuf Nurkic and a solid defensive job on Houston superstar James Harden, the Blazers snapped the Rockets' six-game winning streak with a 110-101 triumph Saturday.

Harden, who had scored at least 40 points in five straight games and entered the game with back-to-back triple-doubles, finished with 38 points but needed 35 shots to get there and was 5-of-17 from 3-point range. "Well, we held him under 40, so I guess that's a win," Portland coach Terry Stotts quipped with reporters after his team was victorious for the eighth time in its last 12 games. The Knicks do not have anyone even remotely on Harden's level as they endure another rebuilding campaign, but they did manage to snap an eight-game slide with a 119-112 win at the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday. Tim Hardaway Jr. led a balanced attack with 22 points as New York had its best offensive output in a regulation game since Nov. 16.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, MSG (New York), NBCS Northwest (Portland)

ABOUT THE KNICKS (10-29): Center Enes Kanter expressed displeasure over a recent reduction in playing time but he's making the most of his opportunities since the calendar turned to January, averaging 16.5 points and 13.5 rebounds in 23.5 minutes this month. Fellow reserves Trey Burke, Damyean Dotson and Mario Hezonja also scored in double figures at Los Angeles to help support a starting five that shot 19-for-60 from the floor. "I think this is a confidence-booster," Burke told reporters. "We've been in a lot of games, but it doesn't matter when you don't pull it out. ... That was putting together a complete second half. They went on a run, and we responded to it."

ABOUT THE TRAIL BLAZERS (23-17): Evan Turner received a rare start in place of sidelined forward Maurice Harkless (knee) in Saturday's win and responded with 14 points while flustering the prolific Harden. "I just had to be aggressive and try to limit what he likes to do," Turner told reporters of defending Harden. "He's an amazing offensive player, he's been on a hell of a run and obviously he's the head of the snake, so I just tried to pick him up, wear him down, tire him out and not try to get any cheap fouls." CJ McCollum chipped in 24 points and played turnover-free basketball for the third time in a span of five games.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. McCollum scored 31 points and G Damian Lillard added 29 to lead Portland to a 118-114 win at New York earlier this season.

2. Knicks PG Frank Ntilikana played just one minute Friday before injuring an ankle and is considered day-to-day.

3. Nurkic has six double-doubles over his last nine games and reached 20 in that category for the second straight season.

PREDICTION: Trail Blazers 117, Knicks 107

Magic vs. Kings Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 01/06/2019

The Sacramento Kings still are confident they are on the rise despite losing a season-high four straight games and get a chance to start proving their case when they host the road-weary Orlando Magic on Monday. Sacramento lost the four contests - all against teams in playoff position entering Sunday - by a total of 20 points after coughing up a seven-point lead in the fourth quarter of Saturday's 127-123 setback against Golden State.

"It (stinks) to lose any type of game, but especially a game we compete from the start to the end," Kings forward Justin Jackson told the Sacramento Bee after scoring a career-high 28 points on Saturday. "Credit to them for hitting all their shots, but we all played extremely hard and I think we really left it out there, and that's all that really matters." The Kings, who have not made the playoffs since 2005-06, have won four straight meetings with the Magic after registering a 107-99 road triumph on Oct. 30 behind 25 points and 11 rebounds from Buddy Hield. Orlando led by 10 after one quarter on Sunday but shot 37.1 percent overall en route to a 106-96 setback against the Los Angeles Clippers for its third loss in the first four contests of its six-game road trip. "I told them I thought our effort was more than good enough. I thought we competed well," Magic coach Steve Clifford told reporters. "(But) you gotta make shots, and I thought we missed a ton of makeable shots."

TV: 10 p.m. ET, FS Florida (Orlando), NBCS California (Sacramento)

ABOUT THE MAGIC (17-22): Nikola Vucevic, who has scored at least 22 points in five of his last seven games, did just about all he could Sunday with 16 on 7-of-17 shooting, 24 rebounds, eight assists and two blocks. Aaron Gordon added 17 points against the Clippers but has struggled from 3-point range of late - making just 5-of-21 attempts over his last five contests. Orlando's third-leading scorer, Evan Fournier has shot the ball well in his last five games - connecting on 52.8 percent overall and 9-of-20 from beyond the arc - but missed 10-of-13 shots against the Kings in October.

ABOUT THE KINGS (19-20): Hield drained a career-high eight 3-pointers on Saturday and has averaged 27.3 points over his last four games, going 22-for-41 from beyond the arc in that stretch. Jackson stepped up Saturday after totaling 13 points in his previous three games while Nemanja Bjelica has raised his production level over the last three contests, averaging 14.3 points and 10 rebounds. Second-leading scorer De'Aaron Fox (17.8 points, team-high 7.5 assists) hopes to bounce back from a 3-of-12 shooting performance against Golden State.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Orlando rookie C Mo Bamba has accumulated 28 points, 30 rebounds and 10 blocks over his last four games.

2. Sacramento G Iman Shumpert (finger) was held out of Saturday's contest and is considered day-to-day.

3. Magic F Jonathon Simmons is just 5-for-19 in his last two games after missing the previous two with an ankle injury.

Blues vs. Flyers Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 01/06/2019

The Philadelphia Flyers and St. Louis Blues seemingly can't catch a break, as the former is mired in a season-worst six-game winless skid (0-4-2) while the latter has dropped three of four to reside in the basement of the Western Conference. The Flyers and Blues look to alter their respective fortunes at the other's expense on Monday when the sputtering clubs reconvene at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

The Flyers and Blues also let third-period leads go by the boards on Saturday, as Calgary rallied to a 3-2 overtime win in Philadelphia while the New York Islanders scored three times in the session to capture a 4-3 victory. "It's tough because we're playing good hockey," Flyers forward Travis Konecny told reporetrs after snapping a 13-game goal drought. "It just seems like teams are just scoring on the one opportunity that they're getting. It usually doesn't go that way, but that's just the way it's going for us right now." Jake Allen likely can relate, as the 28-year-old allowed four goals on the Islanders' final eight shots as the Blues finished their five-game homestand on a sour note. "I've got to be better than that in the third period for this team. I lost it for them," said Allen, who has started a career high-tying 14 straight games and is 0-3-0 in three meetings with Philadelphia.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NHL Network, Sportsnet One, Sportsnet East, Sportsnet Pacific, FS Midwest (St. Louis) NBCS Philadelphia

ABOUT THE BLUES (16-19-4): Ryan O'Reilly, who leads the team in goals (16), assists (22) and points (38), scored late in the third period Saturday to extend his point streak to five games (three goals, three assists). Fellow forward David Perron was credited with an assist on that tally, giving the 30-year-old a point in six straight contests (two goals, seven assists). Former Flyer Brayden Schenn dented the scoresheet for the first time in six games with his first goal in 10 contests on Saturday, giving him eight tallies this season after erupting for a career-best 28 in 2017-18.

ABOUT THE FLYERS (15-20-6): Captain Claude Giroux, who leads the team in assists (33) and points (46), looks to rebound against St. Louis after having an eight-game home point streak halted Saturday. The 30-year-old joins Sean Couturier (club-best 15 goals) in having their way versus the Blues in 2017-18, with the former scoring twice and setting up three others while the latter recorded two goals and two assists in a pair of wins. However, Couturier (29 points) and Giroux have each been kept off the scoresheet in four of the last five games overall.

OVERTIME

1. Philadelphia rookie G Carter Hart, who will get the nod on Monday, has lost his last four starts (0-3-1) despite yielding 12 goals on 97 shots.

2. Blues RW Vladimir Tarasenko, who had two assists versus the Flyers on Jan. 6 in a 6-3 loss, has just three points (two goals, one assist) in his last 14 games.

3. Philadelphia RW Jakub Voracek has recorded just 13 of his 32 points at home this season.

Nashville Predators vs. Toronto Maple Leafs Preview and Predictions 2019-01-07

NHL Predictions 6th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/06/2019

Michael Hutchinson is slowly endearing himself to the fans of the team for which he cheered while growing up in Barrie, Ontario. Fresh off his first shutout in two years, Hutchinson will get the nod on Monday as the Toronto Maple Leafs complete a four-game homestand against the Nashville Predators.

"It's awesome, it's an amazing feeling, something you grow up thinking about as a kid and for it to actually happen is hard to put words to," the 28-year-old Hutchinson told reporters after turning aside 28 shots in Saturday's 5-0 win versus Vancouver. Auston Matthews scored a goal and set up two others for his 13th multi-point performance of the season and boost his point total to six (one goal, five assists) in his last five outings. While the Maple Leafs snapped a two-game home losing skid, the Predators answered a demoralizing 0-8-2 run away from Music City by going 2-0-1 in their last three road contests following Saturday's 4-1 triumph in Montreal. "That's what you have to do on the road. You can't give teams breathing space," former Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban, who set up both of Craig Smith's goals to reach 300 assists for his career.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Tennessee (Nashville), TVA, Sportsnet Ontario (Toronto)

ABOUT THE PREDATORS (25-15-3): Smith, who is riding a three-game goal-scoring streak and has points in five straight, has stressed the importance of fast starts as a means to get Nashville off and running. "It's the process in which we enter a game, the way we play, the passion we play on the ice," the 29-year-old Smith told reporters. "The process is more important, but we have to take ownership in how we start games." Smith's 14 goals are tied with the injured Filip Forsberg for top honors on the team.

ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAFS (27-12-2): John Tavares opened the scoring for the seventh time this season on Saturday, boosting his point total to 14 (eight goals, six assists) in his last nine games. The 28-year-old leads Toronto with 27 goals and sits one shy of 300 for his career, during which he has 10 goals - and five assists - in 12 encounters versus Nashville. Mitch Marner, who has 27 (nine goals, 18 assists) of his club-best 55 points in his last 18 games, had a goal and an assist in the Maple Leafs' 5-2 win over the Predators on March 22.

OVERTIME

1. Nashville owns a sterling 6-1-2 mark against Atlantic Division representatives this season while Toronto is 12-4-0 versus Western foes.

2. Maple Leafs D Morgan Rielly has 17 points (four goals, 13 assists) in 16 games versus Western Conference adversaries.

3. Predators G Pekka Rinne has lost six of nine career decisions (3-4-2) versus Toronto.

Minnesota Wild vs. Montreal Canadiens Preview and Predictions 2019-01-07

NHL Predictions 6th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/06/2019

The Minnesota Wild have begun to show signs of turning things around and hope to add to that momentum while continuing their mastery in the series when they visit the Montreal Canadiens on Monday night. The Wild have won three of their last four contests, including the first two of a four-game road trip, and go for a ninth straight victory against the Canadiens after routing them 7-1 on Dec. 11 at home.

"Our focus was just to build off (the 4-3 win at Toronto on Thursday) and kind of get a little snowball going here," Minnesota forward Jordan Greenway told reporters after a 4-3 win over Ottawa on Saturday. "I think we're doing the right things and it's leading to good things on the scoreboard for us." The Wild have outscored Montreal 23-5 in their last four meetings and left wing Zach Parise scored one goal and set up two others in the victory last month to push his total to 28 points in 33 career contests against the Canadiens. Montreal had won five of six games before coming out slow and suffering a 4-1 loss against Nashville on Saturday, but the Canadiens expect to be more than ready for Monday's battle. "As a professional athlete, it's not fun to be embarrassed like that," right wing Brendan Gallagher told the Montreal Gazette of the 7-1 loss at Minnesota. "It was tough walking out of the arena after being beat that badly and we want to respond better (Monday).

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FS North (Minnesota), RDS, TSN2 (Montreal)

ABOUT THE WILD (20-17-3): Parise boasts four goals and five assists during a five-game point streak while skating on a recently constructed line with Charlie Coyle (six points, last four games) and Luke Kunin (four assists, last four games). "Every team in the NHL has a line that's a go-to line," coach Bruce Boudreau told reporters. "We're hoping that we get another one, because the good teams have more than one, but right now, that's our go-to line." Parise is tied for the team lead in points (38) with fellow forward Mikael Granlund, who has no goals and 14 assists in his last 15 games.

ABOUT THE CANADIENS (22-15-5): Montreal has not been able to get its power play going despite having a skillful group, sitting 30th in the league entering Sunday at 13 percent, and faces the Wild's third-ranked penalty kill (84.7). Leading scorer Max Domi (38 points) has cooled off considerably, going 12 games without a goal despite registering seven assists in that stretch. Gallagher tops the team with 15 goals, but has managed just three assists in his last seven games, while center Phillip Danualt has been wielding a hot stick with five goals and four assists over the last seven contests.

OVERTIME

1. Montreal G Carey Price is just 4-6-0 with a 3.14 goals against average and .887 save percentage in his career against the Wild.

2. Minnesota captain C Mikko Koivu has two goals in the last three games and needs one to reach 200 in his career.

3. Canadiens D Shea Weber scored Saturday and owns 12 points with a plus-8 rating in 18 games this season.

PREDICTION: Canadiens 4, Wild 3

Calgary Flames vs. Chicago Blackhawks Preview and Predictions 2019-01-07

NHL Predictions 6th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/06/2019

The Calgary Flames have recorded two victories over the first three contests of their month-opening four-game road trip, including the 700th triumph away from home in team history, and hope to conclude it with another when they visit the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday. Calgary edged Philadelphia 3-2 on Saturday, rallying from a deficit to win in overtime.

Johnny Gaudreau extended his goal-scoring streak to four games and defenseman TJ Brodie scored 1:59 into the extra session to give the Flames points in five of their last six overall contests (4-1-1). Gaudreau, who leads the team in goals (24) and assists (38), has collected five and six, respectively, over his last four games. Chicago won five of its last six games in December but began this month with a pair of defeats before posting a 5-3 comeback victory in Pittsburgh on Sunday. Captain Jonathan Toews scored a goal and set up another in the third period while Patrick Kane finished with three assists for the Blackhawks, who are kicking off a three-game homestand.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, Sportsnet West (Calgary), NBCS Chicago

ABOUT THE FLAMES (26-13-4): David Rittich was solid in his return from a two-game absence due to a lower-body injury, making 32 saves in Saturday's victory. The 26-year-old netminder has gone 3-0-2 over his last five starts and lost in regulation just once in his last nine decisions (6-1-2). Sean Monahan has collected one goal and eight assists during his four-game point streak.

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (16-21-7): Drake Caggiula made his debut with the team on Sunday and recorded two shots, three hits and a plus-1 rating in 11 minutes, 9 seconds of ice time. The 24-year-old forward was acquired on Dec. 30 from Edmonton, where he recorded seven goals and four assists in 29 games this season, but issues with immigration prevented him from joining Chicago until Saturday. Chris Kunitz, who has been a healthy scratch on many occasions during his first campaign with the club, played on Sunday for the first time since Dec. 23 and scored his first goal of 2018-19.

OVERTIME

1. Flames LW Matthew Tkachuk recorded a goal and an assist against the Flyers to match the career-high point total (49) he registered last season.

2. Chicago D Gustav Forsling was kept out of Sunday's lineup due to an upper-torso injury.

3. Calgary assigned F Dillon Dube and G Jon Gillies to Stockton of the American Hockey League Sunday.

PREDICTION: Flames 5, Blackhawks 2

Kings vs. Sharks Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 01/06/2019

The Los Angeles Kings bid to feed off the momentum of milestone nights by a pair of their superstars when they visit the Pacific Division-rival San Jose Sharks on Monday. Jonathan Quick added to his franchise-best totals by collecting his 300th career victory while captain Anze Kopitar netted his 300th goal as Los Angeles breezed to a 4-0 triumph versus Edmonton on Saturday.

The victory was the sixth in nine outings overall for the Kings, who also evened the season series with a 3-2 overtime victory at San Jose in that stretch. Ilya Kovalchuk, who had an assist against the Oilers and will be playing in his 850th NHL game on Monday, capped a two-goal performance Dec. 22 by scoring 2:29 into the extra session against the Sharks to help Los Angeles overcome captain Joe Pavelski's tally with 31 seconds remaining in the third period. The 34-year-old Pavelski has been on a tear since early November, recording 33 (20 goals, 13 assists) of his 38 points over the last two months. Pavelski pushed his team-leading goal total to 25 by scoring in Saturday's 5-2 triumph over white-hot Tampa Bay, giving him eight points (two goals, six assists) during his five-game point streak.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network, Sportsnet

ABOUT THE KINGS (17-23-3): Kopitar joined Luc Robitaille (557), Marcel Dionne (550), Dave Taylor (431) and Bernie Nicholls (327) as the fifth King to reach the 300-goal plateau with the franchise after collecting his 10th point (three goals, seven assists) in 13 games. The 31-year-old Slovenian scored in Los Angeles' 3-2 season-opening overtime loss to San Jose to boost his career point total to 53 (18 goals, 35 assists) in 68 career encounters before being held off the scoresheet in the teams' most recent meeting. Former captain Dustin Brown, who had an assist against San Jose last month, surpassed Robitaille (1,077) for second on the Kings all-time games played list on Saturday.

ABOUT THE SHARKS (23-13-7): Brent Burns, who leads the team in assists (40) and points (47), set up three goals in his second straight contest and 10th time in his career to push his point streak to five games (three goals, nine assists). Fellow All-Star defenseman Erik Karlsson set up a pair of goals for his fourth multi-assist performance in five outings and matched a franchise record for most consecutive appearances (12) with at least one point (Rob Gaudreau, 1992-93; Jonathan Cheechoo 2005-06). Evander Kane and Logan Couture each have three goals and three assists during their respective four-game point streaks.

OVERTIME

1. San Jose has scored at least five goals in four consecutive contests for just the second time in franchise history.

2. Los Angeles D Drew Doughty notched a pair of assists versus the Oilers, giving him eight points (two goals, six assists) in his last 10 games.

3. Sharks RW Kevin Labanc, who scored in overtime of the teams' first encounter this season, has just one goal in his last 23 contests.

Top 25 Betting Recap
Joe Williams

Each week until March Madness we'll take a look at how the Top 25 fared from college basketball, but straight up and against the number, while also taking a look at their upcoming schedule.

Oklahoma (12-2 SU, 12-1-1 ATS) continues to roll right along, posting covers in nine consecutive contests. The only time they failed to cover was a 20-point paddling from Wisconsin (11-4 SU, 8-7 ATS) on a neutral-site court back on Nov. 22 as 5 1/2-point underdogs. In addition, the 'under' has connected in five of the past six games for the Sooners. As far as the Badgers, it's been all downhill since that victory against OU, as they're just 6-4 SU and 4-6 ATS over the past 10 outings.

The news out of Kansas (12-2 SU, 6-8 ATS) over the weekend wasn't good. They'll be without center Udoka Azubuike after an MRI revealed torn ligaments in his right hand during an injury in practice Friday. As a result, the Jayhawks got worked over at Iowa State (12-2 SU, 8-4-2 ATS), a team almost certain to join the Top 25 in the upcoming week. The Cyclones have won five in a row and they have covered three straight, and they should have some staying power with their next game against a ranked opponent on Jan. 16 at Texas Tech (13-1 SU, 5-9 ATS).

Speaking of the Red Raiders, they have won three in a row since a neutral-site setback against Duke (12-1 SU, 9-4 ATS) on Dec. 20. However, Texas Tech has failed to cover four in a row and seven of the past eight outings. The 'under' is also 3-1 in the past four, and 5-2 across the past seven outings.

As far as the Blue Devils, they did nothing to hurt their No. 1 ranking in a holiday break week on campus. They pushed aside Clemson (10-4 SU, 4-10 ATS) by 19 points for their fourth consecutive cover. It was a rare 'over' result in the 87-68 victory, as the 'under' was 5-0-1 in the past six games entering play, and 9-2-1 in the past 12 contests.

Perhaps I am just old, but how interesting is it that Houston (15-0 SU, 10-4-1 ATS) and N.C. State (13-1 SU, 11-3 ATS) are ranked right next to each other at No. 18 and 19? Seeing those two teams doing well reminds me of Dereck Whittenberg, Hakeem Olajuwon and Jim Valvano, as these schools met for the 1983 national title. The Wolfpack have won seven in a row since a four-point loss at Wisconsin on Nov. 27, and they have covered seven of their past eight. It appears to be clear sailing for the Cougs, as they have won all 15 games they've played while covering eight of the past 10. UH doesn't have a game on the remaining schedule against an opponent currently ranked inside the Top 25.

RECOMMENDED CHOICES
The Walker Group Picks

# 4 QUEEN FABIOLA 2/1

# 1 UNAGI 1/1

# 5 GLORY'S TEACHER 4/1

QUEEN FABIOLA looks to be a very strong contender. Reason to like this filly as she has in the irons one of the best jocks using winning percentages over the last 30 days. Has competitive early pace and will probably fare well against this field. With a quite good 57 speed rating last time out, will surely be a factor in this affair. UNAGI - This filly has been constatntly racing well in her latest outings. With a solid 54 average speed fig at the distance, seems well suited for today's race. GLORY'S TEACHER - Has been running in the most competitive company of the group of horses lately. With a solid ROI of +15 this trainer has shown very strong results with entries running at this distance and surface.

#7 PRETTY VENEZUELA (ML=4/1)
#6 JUMPIN JETT (ML=9/2)
#10 SHE'S A MONSTER (ML=20/1)
#3 PRINCESS ROSE (ML=15/1)

PRETTY VENEZUELA - Rounding her way back into form. Each of her finish positions is getting better in her recent starts. You'll be making money right and left by turning your gambling cash onto this jockey/trainer combination. I predict an ideal trip. Stalk the front runners, and make a bold move on the turn. Look at this pattern of improvement. 46/59/63 are the last three speed figures. JUMPIN JETT - This filly is in exceptional form right now. Finished third in the last race and comes back quickly. SHE'S A MONSTER - Look for this filly to show better right here in this race. Last affair at Parx Racing finishing eighth on a track listed as good is no sign of her true ability. PRINCESS ROSE - Trainer Soto gave this mare a good stiff drill. Last one was 2nd fastest of the day. Ran a less than stellar race at Parx Racing last race out. Racing without a sloppy track puts this mare at the top of my contenders roll call.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 KENDYL ELIZABETH (ML=5/2), #8 ISLAND GETAWAY (ML=5/1), #4 HANNA DUE (ML=6/1),

KENDYL ELIZABETH - This entrant hasn't been on the track since December 10th. Not even any drills. HANNA DUE - Finished first in her most recent effort with a disappointing speed figure. When I look at today's class rating, it would take an improved performance to win after that in this field.

#5 SERBIAN SYCLONE (ML=9/5)
#3 SATELLITE STORM (ML=2/1)
#1 PRIVATE JOKE (ML=5/1)

SERBIAN SYCLONE - This gelding garnered a strong speed rating of 100 in his last race. That speed rating should be good enough to score in today's event. You don't need to look any further. This horse has my cash. Way too much pace. This horse's last three speed figs (101, 105, 100) are equal to or higher than today's class rating. That's good enough for me. Another way to evaluate class is earnings per race. This thoroughbred has the highest in the field. I think he'll be close at the finish. SATELLITE STORM - This gelding is rounding his way back into shape. Should race well today. This gelding likes to be near the lead. Today's event is a shorter distance and should increase his chances to win. Going on Lasix for the first time. While a typical handicapping angle, it's still quite important to know. PRIVATE JOKE - You always have to be on the lookout for bankroll building rider/trainer tandems; we have one right here. Have to make this gelding a win candidate; he comes off a good effort on December 22nd.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 SMARTY PARTY PAPA (ML=9/2), #4 EXECUTIVE DECREE (ML=6/1), #2 GRAND PALAIS (ML=8/1),

SMARTY PARTY PAPA - The speed figure last time out doesn't fit very well in this race when I look at the class rating of today's race. Mark this racer as a likely underpriced contender. EXECUTIVE DECREE - Tough to keep chasing this kind of 'bridesmaid' horse. This gelding notched a speed rating in his last affair which likely isn't good enough in today's event. GRAND PALAIS - This pony hasn't been near the victor at the finish lately. Recorded a substandard speed fig last race out in a $12,500 Optional Claiming race on December 4th. Not likely to see an improved performance off of that fig.

# 5 MR. LOVEJOY 7/2

# 4 LONDON LEGACY 3/5

# 6 NORM'S PLACE 8/1

MR. LOVEJOY looks to be a respectable contender. Should come out strong - I have liked the way this gelding has moved speedily to the front end recently. Has to be used in the exotic bets. Garnered a very good speed figure last time out. LONDON LEGACY - Has formidable speed figures and has to be considered for a bet in this event. With one of the most favorable jockeys in terms of gains at the window, don't count this gelding out. NORM'S PLACE - Always good to invest in a handler with this kind of quite good win percentage - 19 percent - at this distance & surface. Has formidable Equibase Speed Figs and has to be considered for a bet here.

1* on San Antonio Spurs -3
The Key: The Spurs continue to get no respect from oddsmakers. That has been proven with their 12-3 SU & 13-2 ATS run in their last 15 games overall. And I don’t expect the Pistons to offer much resistance tonight. The Pistons are only 4-13 SU & 5-11-1 ATS in their last 17 games overall. The Spurs are 13-4 ATS when the line is +3 to -3 this season. San Antonio is 10-1 ATS in its last 11 games playing on one day of rest. Detroit is 0-5 ATS in its last five games when playing on one day of rest. Take San Antonio.

The Nets are hot right now, but I expect them to cool off tonight considering they’ll be playing for a second consecutive day and their 3rd game in 4 days. The Celtics are coming off back-to-back blowout home wins over the Timberwolves by 13 and the Mavericks by 21. I expect another double-digit win here against a tired Nets team. The Celtics are a very profitable 27-8 ATS in their last 35 home games. Boston is 7-1 ATS in its last eight games following a win by more than 10 points. Brooklyn is 2-8 ATS in its last 10 games playing on zero rest. Boston is 12-2 ATS in its last 14 games off a blowout home win by 20 points or more. Give me the Celtics.

10* FREE NBA PICK (Nets +10)
I'll take my chances here with Brooklyn as a double-digit dog against Boston. The Nets have to be the biggest surprise of the season right now. Brooklyn is 12-3 in their last 15 games. Even with that run, clearly this team isn't getting a ton of love for what they have done if they are getting this many points. I get the Nets are playing in the second game of a back-to-back, but I think they dig into the reserves against not only a division rival, but the team everyone came into the season thinking was the team to beat in the East. At some point Boston is likely going to start playing up to their potential, but there's no denying they haven't been the team we thought we would see. Give me the Nets +10!

This play just missed out on our premium card. The Alabama CrimsonTide and the Clemson Tigers face off on Monday and in this game the value lies with the under.
Don't be fooled by the numbers and how many points the Crimson Tide put up against Oklahoma, Tua didn't look that great.
Trevor Lawrence is also a freshman and I think there is a good chance there are a lot of nerves early in this game.

NBA | Lakers vs Mavs
Play on: Mavs -7 -110 at betonline

Jack’s Free Pick Monday: Dallas Mavericks -7
The Dallas Mavericks have been one of the best home teams in the NBA this season. They have gone 15-3 SU & 14-4 ATS in their 18 home games this year. And they return home highly motivated for a victory off back-to-back road losses at Boston and at Philadelphia.
This is an awful spot for the Lakers, who will be playing the 2nd of a back-to-back and their 3rd game in 4 days. And they are short-handed as they have been without Lebron James, Rajon Rondo and Kyle Kuzma in recent games.
When Lebron James sits, his teams are now 1-16 SU in their last 17 games without him. The Lakers lost at home to the Thunder by 7, at home to the Knicks by 7, and on the road to the Timberwolves by 22 in their last three games without him. They simply don’t have enough talent to make up for his loss, especially with both Rondo and Kuzma out as well.
Plays on favorites of 3.5 to 9.5 points (Dallas) - revenging a loss vs. opponent by 10 points or more, off two or more consecutive road losses are 32-9 (78%) ATS over the last five seasons. The Lakers are 0-6 ATS in their last six Monday games. The Mavericks are 6-0 ATS in their last six games following a loss. Dallas is 4-1 ATS in its last five home meetings with Los Angeles. Bet the Mavericks Monday.

NHL | Flames vs Blackhawks
Play on: OVER 6½ -105

Scott "The Bulldog" Rickenbach NHL Game #39 Monday Free Pick OVER the total in Chicago Blackhawks vs Calgary Flames @ 8:35 ET - The Blackhawks are off a huge 5-3 win at Pittsburgh last night and continue to play much better hockey of late. However, they face a major challenge now in a flat spot here off that big win. Chicago now is hosting a Calgary team that is loaded with speed, talent, and weapons. The Flames also have a rest edge since they were off yesterday. Calgary is off a low-scoring win over the Flyers Saturday but they faced a desperate Philly team that played very well defensively as a result. You're not going to see desperation here from the Hawks D-men after that big win over the Penguins. In other words, plenty of open ice in this one and, as a result, plenty of goals too. The Blackhawks have scored an average of 3.4 goals per game their last 8 games. Chicago has scored at least 3 goals in 5 of their last 7 games on home ice. Keep in mind a 3-3 game here guarantees us no worse than a 4-3 final and a winning ticket with the over. That is noteworthy because the Flames have scored an average of 5 goals per game their last 4 games overall. Also, prior to the win over Philadelphia, Calgary had allowed 3 or more goals in 6 of their last 7 games. The Flames have averaged scoring 3.8 goals per game in their last 5 games against the Blackhawks. The over is 9-3-1 this season when Chicago is playing with home loss revenge. Also, the over is 8-3 this season when the Blackhawks are off a game in which they scored 4 or more goals. The over is 3-1 in Calgary's last 4 games. Free Pick OVER the total in Chicago

NBA | Lakers vs Mavs
Play on: Mavs -8 -108 at pinnacle

Take the Dallas Mavericks minus the points versus the Los Angeles Lakers. Dallas (18-21) has lost their last two games after their 106-100 loss at Phoenix on Saturday. The Mavericks have bounced-back to cover the point spread in 6 straight games after a straight-up loss. Now after playing their last four games on the road, Dallas returns home where they have covered the point spread in 19 of their last 26 games. Los Angeles (21-19) is struggling with LeBron James on the shelf with his groin injury. The Lakers have failed to cover the point spread in 4 of their last 5 games after allowing at least 100 points in their last game. Los Angeles is also just 2-7-1 ATS in their last 10 games against teams with a losing record. Take Dallas minus the points. Best of luck — Frank.

#NBA FREE PICK FROM MIKE LUNDIN
Only the Denver Nuggets own a better home record in the West than the Dallas Mavericks who are 15-3 SU and 14-4 ATS at American Airlines Center.
I think we'll see a double-digit win for the home team here as it'll take on a banged up and fatigued Lakers team.
Lakers superstar LeBron James (groin) won't be back in uniform for at least another two games and power forward Kyle Kuzma has missed the last two games with a bruised lower back. Backup point guard Rajon Rondo has missed six games and won't be back for a while.
We can also note that this will be the Lakers third game in four nights and the 2nd contest of a back-to-back after taking a 108-86 loss at Minnesota on Sunday.
The Lakers claimed the first two meetings of the season, both in LA. Expect the Mavs to exact revenge in their own building tonight.

My money is on the Eagles to cash in an easy cover here as a near double-digit dog against the Bears. Eastern Washington is a mere 3-11 on the season, but aren't as bad as the record would suggest. I expect them to be a lot more competitive in league play and they have been, as they are only getting outscored by 1.7 ppg in their 3 conference games so far. Northern Colorado is 9-5 overall and 4-0 at home, but are 5-7 ATS in all line games, including 0-2 ATS mark at home. Bet Eastern Washington +9.5!

NBA | Magic vs Kings
Play on: UNDER 224 -113

1* Free NBA Pick on Magic/Kings UNDER 224
Ton of value here with the UNDER in Monday's non-conference clash between the Kings and Magic. These two teams played earlier this season in Orlando and combined for a mere 206 points with a total set at 220.5.
While Sacramento has found themselves in a lot of high-scoring games recently (OVER is 6-1 in their last 7), a lot of that had to do with the teams they were playing, all of which were strong offensive teams.
Orlando doesn't fit the bill. The Magic rank 27th in scoring at 103.4 ppg and are 28th in offensive efficiency. This is also their 5th straight game on the road and they are playing on no rest. The pace simply isn't going to be there for this team to score enough to eclipse this mark.
UNDER 11-2 in Orlando's lat 13 road games off a road loss by points or more and 9-1 in their last 10 when revenging a loss as a favorite UNDER is also 10-4 in the Kings last 14 home games vs a team with a losing road record. Take the UNDER!

In fact, Portland is on a 6-1 Under roll their last 7 games, but tonight against the Knicks, I see the points piling up.

The Knicks are playing their 5th of 6 games away from the Big Apple, and they come into Rip City having played each of their last 3 on this road trek Over the total. New York in fact, has played 8 of their last 11 games on the road Over the total, and this one shapes up to be another Over in my book.

The first meeting between the teams this year saw the Blazers take it 118-114 at Madison Square Garden as that game did land Over the total to snap a 5 game series Under run.

New York has got to be tired, as they have been on the road since December 27th, so I expect Portland to get plenty of easy baskets tonight in what should be a Blazers double-digit win when its all said and done.

Look for plenty of meaningless buckets tonight.

Knicks-Blazers Over the total.
