# 7 MIGHTY BE SPECIAL 5/2

# 1 PM ZUPPARDO 10/1

# 2 TF I AM SPECIAL 5/1

MIGHTY BE SPECIAL is tough to overlook as the bet in here. Has been racing in the most competitive company of the group of horses lately. Has been travelling soundly and has among the most favorable speed in the race for today's distance. He must be given consideration given the very good speed numbers. PM ZUPPARDO - Has competitive early pace and should fare admirably versus this group of horses in this race. Could beat this group given the 65 speed rating garnered in his last outing. TF I AM SPECIAL - Should be carefully examined - I like the figures from the last affair. I can't pass on this gelding given one of the top rider and handler combos on the grounds.

#7 A C EFFERVESCENCE (ML=7/2)
#2 WORLD IS MY CITY (ML=12/1)

A C EFFERVESCENCE - I like to bet on this handicapping angle, a thoroughbred coming back off a sharp effort within the last month. Generally accepted angle - 3rd or 4th start after a layoff generally leads to a big effort. Going to run a good one. WORLD IS MY CITY - This filly was sharp enough to post a 'top two' workout recently. I think she's ready for today's event. The ROI when Leon and Poole partner up is out of sight. Poole brings her right back. I suggest you stick with this strong filly. This one has shown the capability to win on different tracks. Making the move from Mountaineer Park for today's event, I have to believe she's ready to run.

Vulnerable Contenders: #8 EXTREME EXCESS (ML=3/1), #10 ORPHAN QUEEN (ML=4/1), #4 DRAMA PRINCESS (ML=6/1),

EXTREME EXCESS - This racer hasn't been on the track since Dec 10th. Not even any drills. Should be difficult for this horse to beat this field off of that last speed figure. Improbable to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's class figure, so put her on the possibly overvalued contestants list. ORPHAN QUEEN - Usually I need a sprinter to have some recent success in short distance events in order to wager on her. Not probable that the speed figure she registered on Dec 19th will hold up in this contest. DRAMA PRINCESS - 69/63/58, are the declining speed ratings for this mount.

#7 APPEALING HENRY (ML=5/2)
#5 D. S. BOYD (ML=8/1)

APPEALING HENRY - The last time I saw this horse was at Aqueduct in a race with a class number of 91. Dropping significantly in Equibase class figure today puts him in a solid position in this field. He has the highest earnings per start. Check out this animal. D. S. BOYD - This horse could be tough this time, especially since Sanchez rode last out and now should be familiar with this one. I like to see fast morning drills. This gelding's last one was very good. Second fastest of the day. Thoroughbred didn't land in the top three in last race, but did beat half the field, and made up ground down the lane. A slight improvement and this horse should be right there at the finish line.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 DISRUPTOR (ML=2/1), #1 PREP PRIDE (ML=5/1), #1A THE ITALIAN (ML=5/1),

DISRUPTOR - This chalk horse hasn't been to the track in awhile. No workouts since last race. Speed kills. Plenty of speed in this race compromises this horse's chances. When scrutinizing today's class figure, he will have to earn a better speed figure than in the last race to be competitive in this dirt sprint. PREP PRIDE - Recent dropping speed figs of 61/58/55 give an indication that this horse may be going off form. This horse hasn't shown much life in the last pair of affairs. THE ITALIAN - If today's contest shapes up right, all the speedballs will force a fierce speed battle early. Too bad this horse is one of those front runners.

# 5 CINCO Y CINCO 6/1

# 1 CHEDDAR CHUB 12/1

# 6 GOTTA GET AWAY 8/5

CINCO Y CINCO is tough to overlook as the wager in here. He should definitely be considered given the very good speed figures. Must be considered based on the quite good speed figure earned in the last contest. Has posted solid speed figures in dirt route races in the past. CHEDDAR CHUB - Must be considered - I like the numbers from the last contest. Woodhouse has well above average profits at this distance/surface. GOTTA GET AWAY - Going on blinkers can produce noticeable speed increases. It's a good sign that Pino is using Sanchez on this entrant.

Tuesday's ACC Tip Sheet
David Schwab

Tuesday night’s doubleheader of college basketball betting action on ESPN features a pair of matchups in the ACC. The top-ranked Duke Blue Devils will be on the road against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons to start the night. In a heated in-state rivalry between a pair of ranked teams, the No. 15 North Carolina Tar Heels travel crosstown to Raleigh to tangle with the No. 18 North Carolina State Wolfpack.

No. 1 Duke at Wake Forest (ESPN, 7 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Duke -21.5, Total 158

Betting Matchup

Duke faced Clemson at home in Saturday’s ACC opener and it covered a hefty 15-point spread with an 87-68 victory that went OVER 151 points. The Blue Devils have covered against the spread in their last four games and the total had stayed UNDER in their previous six outings. They are 12-1 straight-up overall with a 9-4 record ATS. Freshman forward Zion Williamson connected on nine of his 11 shots for a game-high 25 points against Clemson. He also pulled down 10 rebounds while highlighting his performance with a 360-degree dunk.

The Demon Deacons slipped to 7-6 SU with a 6-7 record ATS after coming up well short against Georgia Tech in their conference opener on Saturday. They were on the wrong end of a 92-79 loss as 7 ½-point underdogs. This was Wake Forest’s third SU loss in its last four games. It returns home for Tuesday night’s contest at 3-4 ATS in seven previous home games this season. Freshman forward Jaylen Hoard was coming off his best game this season after scoring 23 points with 15 rebounds in last Wednesday’s 22-point win against Cornell. He put up 19 points against the Yellow Jackets on Saturday.

Betting Trends

-- The Blue Devils have gone 8-3 ATS in their last 11 ACC games and the total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in nine of their last 11 games following a SU win.

-- The Demon Deacons are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 home games and the total has stayed UNDER in four of their last five games played at home.

-- The home team in this matchup has covered the spread in 24 of the last 34 meetings and the total has gone OVER in five of the last seven meetings at Wake Forest.

No. 15 North Carolina at No. 18 North Carolina State (ESPN, 9 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: N.C. State -2, Total 173.5

Betting Matchup

With Saturday’s 85-60 victory on the road against Pittsburgh as 9 ½-point favorites, the Tar Heels improved to 5-1 SU and 4-1-1 ATS in their last six games. The lone loss was an eight-point setback against Kentucky on Dec. 22 as 2 ½-point favorites at home. North Carolina is 11-3 SU with a 8-4-2 record ATS. The total stayed UNDER 157 points in Saturday’s win and it has stayed UNDER in five of North Carolina’s last six games. Senior guard Cam Johnson leads the team in scoring with 16.3 points per game and he put up 15 points against the Panthers as one of three starters in double figures.

The Wolfpack opened their ACC schedule last Thursday night with an 87-82 victory against Miami as three-point road favorites. This was their seventh SU win in a row and they boosted their record to 7-1 ATS over their last eight games. NC State 13-1 SU overall with a profitable 10-3 record covering the closing number. The lone loss was to Wisconsin on Nov. 27. The Wolfpack are averaging 89.2 PPG behind a roster that has four players scoring at least 11 points a game. Senior guard Torin Dorn is leading the way with 14.5 points and junior guard Markell Johnson (12.4 points) is connecting on 50.9 percent of his three-point attempts.

Betting Trends

-- The Tar Heels have covered in four of their last five games against a team with a SU winning record and the total has stayed UNDER in five if their last six conference games.

-- The Wolfpack are 5-1 ATS in their last six home games against a team with a SU winning record on the road and the total has stayed UNDER in 10 of their last 14 home games.

-- The favorite has covered in four of the last five meetings and the total has gone OVER in six of the last seven meetings at NC State.

Tuesday's SEC Tip Sheet
Brian Edwards

Gamblers don’t have time for any sort of hangover from the College Football Playoff finals. That’s because Tuesday offers a stacked card for college basketball. Let’s take an in-depth look at a pair of SEC games before looking at some national notes in Bonus Nuggets.

**Tennessee at Missouri**

-- One offshore book opened Tennessee as an 8.5-point road favorite with a total of 140 early Monday afternoon.

-- Since Missouri joined the SEC for the 2012-13 campaign, these schools have squared off seven times. Tennessee is 4-3 both SU and ATS in those seven encounters, while the ‘under’ has cashed at a 5-2 clip. The Tigers won a 59-55 decision as two-point home favorites in last year’s showdown, with the 114 combined points diving ‘under’ the 141.5-point tally. Kevin Puryear paced the winners with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Grant Williams had 15 points, five rebounds and two steals in the losing effort. Kyle Alexander hit 6-of-6 shots from the field and finished with 12 points, four boards and three blocked shots, while Admiral Schofield contributed 11 points, five rebounds and two steals.

-- Since losing 87-81 in overtime to Kansas at Barclays Arena in Brooklyn on Nov. 23, Tennessee (12-1 straight up, 6-5-1 against the spread) has won eight games in a row while going 4-3-1 ATS. In Saturday’s SEC opener at Thompson-Boling Arena, Rick Barnes’s squad blasted Georgia 96-50 as a 13-point home ‘chalk.’ The 146 combined points slithered ‘under’ the 148-point tally. UT led 53-24 at intermission in this start-to-finish pimpslap. The Volunteers enjoyed a 45-30 rebounding advantage and limited UGA to 1-of-20 makes from 3-point land (5.0%!). Williams was the catalyst with 18 points, eight rebounds, five assists, two steals and one blocked shot. Schofield added 18 points, six boards and three assists, while Alexander produced 12 points and 14 rebounds on 6-of-8 shooting from the field.

-- Tennessee has won by double-digit margins seven times during its eight-game winning streak, including a 102-92 win at Memphis and an 83-64 home win over Wake Forest. The Vols handed Gonzaga its first loss out in Phoenix by a 76-73 count as 3.5-point underdogs. Schofield drained 6-of-10 launches from 3-point land while dropping a game-high 30 points on the Bulldogs. Williams produced 16 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists compared to only one turnover, while Jordan Bone struggled from the field (2-of-13 FGAs) and had only five points but dished out nine assists. UT had an outstanding 22/7 assist-to-turnover ratio.

-- Tennessee is No. 7 in KenPom.com’s rankings. UT is 4-1 in five games against foes ranked in KenPom’s Top 100. The Vols beat Ga. Tech 66-53 in Knoxville and knocked off Louisville 92-81 in Brooklyn.

-- Williams averages team-highs in scoring (19.9 points per game), rebounding (8.3 RPG) and steals (1.2 SPG). The junior power forward from Charlotte averages 4.1 assists and 1.7 blocked shots per game as well. Williams is burying 59.7 percent of his FGAs, 44.4 percent of his 3-balls and 79.8 percent of his free-throw attempts. Schofield, the senior small forward, averages 18.2 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. He’s made 51.7 percent of his FGAs, 45.5 percent of his 3’s and 74.1 percent of his FTAs. Alexander (10.4 PPG, 7.4 RPG) averages team-bests in field-goal percentage (68.4%) and blocked shots (1.8 BPG), while Bone (14.0 PPG) has an 83/24 assist-to-turnover ratio and has hit 85.0 of his FTAs.

-- UT is ranked seventh in the nation in FG percentage (51.3%) and 10th in scoring with its 86.3 points-per-game average. The Vols are eighth in the country in FG percentage defense (37.5%).

-- Missouri (9-3 SU, 6-5 ATS) has won six of its seven home games while compiling a 4-2 spread record. The Tigers took a devastating loss in late October when sophomore center Jontay Porter tore his ACL and MCL in his right knee to end his season before it started. Porter, who opted to return to school rather than go pro early like his brother Michael, averaged 9.9 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.7 blocked shots per game as a true freshman last year.

-- Missouri scores only 69.1 PPG to rank No. 291 in the nation out of 351 Division-1 teams. However, the Tigers can stroke it from 3-point land, ranking 20th in the country with their 39.3 percentage from beyond the arc.

-- Cuonzo Martin’s team lost three double-digit scorers and Jontay Porter from a team that went 20-13 and lost to FSU in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Senior guard Jordan Geist is the team leader in scoring (13.9 PPG), assists (2.8 APG) and steals (1.4 SPG). Sophomore power forward Jeremiah Tilmon averages team-bests in rebounding (6.7 RPG), FG percentage (56.4%) and blocked shots (0.9 BPG).

-- Since losing back-to-back games to Kansas St. and Temple, Missouri has won six straight games while going 5-0-1 ATS. A 64-62 overtime win over UCF as 2.5-point home underdogs ended the Tigers’ two-game losing streak. Since then, they’ve won five games in a row by margins of at least 14 points, including a 65-45 home win over Utah, a 71-56 home win over Xavier and a 79-63 triumph over Illinois in St. Louis. Geist put up 20 points, seven assists and six rebounds in the win over the Illini.

-- Missouri is No. 74 at KenPom, going 3-3 versus Top 100 opponents. The Tigers’ third loss was a 76-59 setback at Iowa St and they beat Oregon St. (No. 73) 69-63 on a neutral floor.

-- This is Mizzou’s first game since Dec. 29 and its SEC opener. The Tigers are off a 75-61 win over Morehead St. as 13.5-point home favorites. Mark Smith led the winners with 22 points, seven rebounds, two steals and two assists, hitting 4-of-9 from 3-point territory. Geist added 29 points, five boards, three steals and two assists without a turnover. He buried 4-of-8 launches from downtown and 7-of-12 FGAs. Puryear contributed 12 points, eight rebounds and three assists compared to just one turnover.

-- The ‘under’ is on a 4-2 run for the Tigers in their past six games. They’ve seen the ‘under’ go 6-5 overall, 4-2 in their home outings.

-- Totals have been an overall wash (6-6) for the Vols with the ‘over’ hitting in their lone road assignment. They’ve seen the ‘under’ go 5-2 in their last seven contests.

-- The ‘under’ is 8-3 in Mizzou’s past 11 SEC games, 6-2 in UT’s last eight games against SEC foes.

-- Tip-off on ESPN2 is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Eastern.

**Alabama at LSU**

-- One offshore shop opened LSU as a six-point 'chalk' with a total of 151.

-- Alabama (10-3 SU, 5-7-1 ATS) is in a vintage letdown spot here after getting a rare win over Kentucky at Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloosa on Saturday. Since losing back-to-back games at UCF and vs. Georgia State, the Crimson Tide is on a five-game winning streak and is 4-0-1 ATS during this stretch. They captured a 77-75 win over UK as five-point underdogs, with the 152 combined points going ‘over’ the 143-point total. Alabama had a 39-31 advantage over the Wildcats on the boards. Devin Mack, the transfer from Texas who sat out last season, drained 6-of-8 shots from 3-point land and scored a game-high 22 points. Donta Hall added 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Herb Jones contributed 10 points, eight boards and six assists without a turnover. Jones made all four of his FGAs and both of his FTAs, essentially playing a perfect game offensively.

-- Avery Johnson’s squad is No. 59 at KenPom, posting a 6-1 record against Top-100 foes. Alabama has a neutral-court win over Ball St. (#62), in addition to home victories over the likes of Murray St. (#61), Arizona (#55), Liberty (#65), Penn St. (#60) and Kentucky (#12). The Tide has lost a pair of games to opponents outside of KenPom’s Top 100, falling to Northeastern (#119 on a neutral court) and Georgia St. (#109 after leading by 21 at halftime in T-Town), in addition to a 70-64 defeat at UCF (#35).

-- Alabama is 1-1 both SU and ATS in a pair of road assignments.

-- Alabama advanced to the Round of 32 last year by beating Virginia Tech before falling to eventual national champion, Villanova. The Tide lost Braxton Key (7.0 PPG, 5.3 RPG) to a grad transfer and star guard Collin Sexton (19.2 PPG) early to the NBA Draft. They have everyone else back and added Mack, who is averaging 9.9 points and 3.3 RPG, and five-star recruit Kira Lewis Jr. The true freshman guard averaged 28.5 points, 5.9 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 3.9 steals per game for Hazel Green High School in the Huntsville area of North Alabama last year. Lewis is leading the Tide in scoring (14.8 PPG), assists (3.1 APG with a 40/25 assist-to-turnover ratio) and FT percentage (83.0%).

-- Hall (10.9 PPG) is averaging team-highs in rebounding (8.3 RPG), FG percentage (65.4%), and blocked shots (2.1 BPG). John Petty (10.7 PPG) is also averaging in double figures.

-- LSU (10-3 SU, 5-7 ATS) is unbeaten in eight home games with a 3-5 spread record. Since losing 82-76 at still-undefeated Houston on Dec. 12, Will Wade’s club has won three games in a row while going 2-1 ATS. The Tigers won an 81-69 decision over ULM its last time out on Dec. 28, but they failed to cover the number as 17.5-point home ‘chalk.’ Naz Reid, a freshman out of New Jersey who was a five-star recruit and McDonald’s All-American, produced 19 points (7-of-10 FGAs), 12 rebounds and four blocked shots, while Tremont Waters also had a double-double with 11 points, 10 assists and eight steals. Skylar Mays added 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field.

-- LSU is ranked No. 41 at KenPom, posting a 3-3 record against Top-100 opponents. The Tigers lost neutral-court games to FSU (in overtime) and Oklahoma St., in addition to the loss at UH. They have Top-100 neutral-floor wins over Saint Mary’s and Charleston, in addition to a home scalp of Memphis.

-- LSU finished 18-15 overall and 8-10 in SEC play last year, losing at Utah in the second round of the NIT. The Tigers lost four players out of their rotation, including center Duop Reath (12.5 PPG, 5.3 RPG), but Wade brought in a top-five recruiting class nationally and Waters elected to return for his sophomore campaign.

-- LSU is led in scoring by Mays, who averages 13.5 PPG and is shooting the lights out from the field (52.6%), 3-point range (42.6%) and the charity stripe (88.2%). Mays has a 32/15 assist-to-turnover ratio. Waters (12.5 PPG) leads the Tigers in assists (5.5 APG) and steals (3.2 SPG). In fact, he’s ranked third in the nation and tops in the SEC in steals. Reid is averaging 12.6 points and 5.8 RPG, while fellow true freshman Ja’vonte Smart, a Baton Rouge native, is averaging 10.2 PPG.

-- The ‘over’ is 10-2 overall for the Tide, 2-0 in its road assignments.

-- Totals have been an overall wash for LSU (6-6), but the ‘under’ is 5-2 in its home games. With that said, the ‘over’ has hit a 3-1 clip in the Tigers’ past four outings (two home, one neutral and one away).

-- The SEC Network will have the telecast at 8:00 p.m. Eastern.

**B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Who leads the nation in scoring? That would be Campbell’s Chris Clemons, who is scoring at a 29.3 PPG clip. The 5’9” guard out of Raleigh, N.C., also averages 5.9 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.6 steals per game. Clemons dropped a season-high 45 points on the Hoyas in a 93-85 loss at Georgetown, but the Fighting Camels took the cash as 13-point underdogs.

-- BEST ATS TEAMS: Ole Miss (12-1), Oklahoma (12-1-1), Samford (13-3), Longwood (11-2) and East Tennessee State (12-3). (S/O to ETSU alum Mister Jennings!)

-- WORST ATS TEAMS Middle Tennessee (1-12), Iona (2-11), Eastern Washington (2-11), Northern Iowa (2-11) and UT-Martin (1-10).

-- Anyone notice the Kermit Davis Factor above? You and I both!

-- Michigan State guard Joshua Langford is ‘out’ indefinitely with an ankle injury. Langford was averaging 15.0 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists per through the Spartans’ first 13 games.

-- Kansas star center Udoka Azubuike is out for the rest of the season with a torn ligament in his right hand. He sustained the injury at Friday’s practice. Azubuike was averaging 13.4 points. 6.8 rebounds and 1.6 blocked shots per in nine KU games this year. He missed a few other games earlier in the year with a sprained ankle.

-- Kudos to VSIN’s Matt Youmans, who called New Mexico as an eight-point underdog in first-half bets and +14.5 for Saturday’s home game vs. previously-unbeaten Nevada. UNM smashed the Wolf Pack by an 85-58 count to cash money-line tickets in the +900 neighborhood. Anthony Morris dropped a game-high 27 points on Nevada for the Lobos, who are atop the Mountain West Conference standings with a 2-0 record in league play.

-- With Nevada’s loss, there are only three unbeaten teams remaining: Michigan, Houston and Virginia.

Indiana Pacers vs. Cleveland Cavaliers Preview and Predictions 2019-01-08

NBA Predictions 7th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/07/2019

The Indiana Pacers missed a chance to declare themselves legitimate contenders in the Eastern Conference when they dropped a 121-105 decision at Toronto on Sunday, but there is still plenty of room for growth. The Pacers will try to bounce back when they make the third stop of a five-game trip by visiting the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday.

Indiana had a six-game winning streak come to an end on Sunday and was outscored in each quarter as Toronto steadily pulled away. "Toronto's a really good team," Pacers center Domantas Sabonis told reporters. "That's why they've been at the top of the east for the last couple of years. The way they are consistent throughout the whole game is something we need to work towards." Indiana takes a step down in competition against the Cavaliers, who own the worst record in the NBA and come into Monday's matchup riding a nine-game losing streak, capped by a 133-98 home loss to the New Orleans Pelicans on Saturday. "If you love this game and you care about being a competitor, you're going to hate times like these," Cleveland center Tristan Thompson told reporters. "You're going to have sleepless nights, and it's going to mess with you."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Indiana, FS Ohio (Cleveland) LINE: Pacers -10

ABOUT THE PACERS (26-13): Indiana went 4-of-17 from 3-point range on Sunday, with All-Star shooting guard Victor Oladipo missing all four of his attempts from beyond the arc. "They got up 33 threes tonight, we got up 17, they made most of theirs, and we didn't make enough of ours," Oladipo told reporters. "It seemed like we got cold, it's just a tough loss, it seemed like we were exhausted out there, but we just gotta figure it out. Hopefully this will be eye opening for us and we will realize we've got a lot of work to do if want to get to where we want to be." Oladipo is 10-of-36 from 3-point range over the last six games.

ABOUT THE CAVALIERS (8-32): Cleveland is struggling to keep pace in the second half and coach Larry Drew was fed up enough with the third-quarter struggles to pull four of his five starters less than four minutes into the period on Saturday. "I was just a little upset I couldn't take all five out and put five new ones in there, I only had four guys on the bench," Drew told reporters. "The message was very simple. Those guys were not playing well. Frankly, I had seen enough at that point." Reserve guard Jordan Clarkson led the team with 23 points in the loss and leads the team at an average of 16.9 points.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Cavaliers waived SG Patrick McCaw on Sunday after signing him one week earlier.

2. Pacers C Myles Turner (shoulder) sat out Sunday and is questionable for Tuesday.

3. The visiting team took the first two meetings this season, with Indiana earning a 119-107 victory at Cleveland on Oct. 27.

PREDICTION: Pacers 125, Cavaliers 109

Wizards vs. 76ers Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 01/07/2019

The Philadelphia 76ers routed Washington earlier this season and now look to beat the Wizards on back-to-back nights. The 76ers led by as many as 35 points in a 123-98 home triumph on Nov. 30 and now host the Wizards on Tuesday before the scene shifts to Washington for Wednesday's back end of the home-and-home set.

Philadelphia has won three straight games and six of its past eight and improved to 17-3 at home with Saturday's 106-100 victory over the Dallas Mavericks. Swingman Jimmy Butler (upper respiratory infection) is expected back after a two-game absence amid reports he recently challenged coach Brett Brown about his role in the offense. Washington improved to 5-17 on the road with a stellar 116-98 trouncing of the Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday that was certainly one of its best performances of a disappointing campaign. "It has to be up there, there's no question," Wizards coach Scott Brooks said afterward. "We battled. We played against one of the best teams in basketball. They've got a lot of talent. They've got three All-Stars on the floor and I think we battled them and did a lot of things well."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NBCS Washington, NBCS Philadelphia LINE: 76ers -8.5

ABOUT THE WIZARDS (16-24): Small forward Otto Porter Jr. had 20 points, six rebounds, five assists and three blocked shots in 24 minutes off the bench in the rout of the Thunder. Porter has served in a reserve role in three straight games since returning from a 10-game absence due to a knee injury and Brooks said he is considering keeping Porter in a bench role. "Otto just wants to play and play well and play the right way," Brooks told reporters. "If we keep him there for a while, who knows. But we have been playing some good basketball. I know we haven't won every game, but we've been playing hard, and we have to keep doing it. But he has a nice rhythm coming off the bench the last few games."

ABOUT THE 76ERS (26-14): Butler isn't always meshing with fellow stars Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons with Embiid saying the trio will "keep working on it," while Brown downplayed the turmoil. "I didn't feel like any of that crossed the line," Brown told reporters of Butler's strong assertions. "He's vocal. He's all in and he has opinions, but it's instigated by me. None of this should surprise anybody. He's got opinions. He wants to be heard. And he should be heard." Simmons said he has no issues with Butler - "Jimmy's been great, amazing for me," he said.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The 76ers won five of the past eight meetings after losing 10 of the previous 11 matchups.

2. Washington SG Bradley Beal scored 25 points against Oklahoma City for his 31st 20-point effort of the campaign.

3. Simmons recorded 20 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists against Dallas for his sixth triple-double of the season and 18th of his career.

PREDICTION: 76ers 110, Wizards 106

Denver Nuggets vs. Miami Heat Preview and Predictions 2019-01-08

NBA Predictions 7th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/07/2019

The Denver Nuggets look to start a new winning streak when they visit the Miami Heat on Tuesday. Denver had a five-game victory stretch halted Monday when they were outclassed 125-113 by the torrid Houston Rockets.

The Nuggets allowed 22 3-pointers and made just seven of their own during a loss to a Houston squad that won for 12th time in the past 14 games. Standout center Nikola Jokic recorded 24 points and 13 rebounds for his fourth straight double-double and he is averaging 27 points and 13 rebounds during the stretch. Miami had been playing well with eight wins in 10 games before being pounded 106-82 by the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday. The Heat will try to rebound in the opener of a three-game homestand that includes games against the Boston Celtics and Memphis Grizzlies.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, Altitude2 (Denver), FS Sun (Miami) LINE: Heat -1.5

ABOUT THE NUGGETS (26-12): Shooting guard Gary Harris was limited to 27 minutes after tweaking his hamstring during Monday's loss and he insisted after the contest that he would play against the Heat. Coach Michael Malone didn't sound as sure and told reporters there was "definitely a little bit of concern in terms of his hamstring" and that was why Harris didn't return to the game. Harris had 14 points in just his fourth contest after missing 11 straight games with a hip injury.

ABOUT THE HEAT (19-19): Miami shot just 35.6 percent from the field, including a putrid 5-of-34 from 3-point range, in the embarrassing showing against Atlanta. "If you don't bring your best effort, your best game, best focus, you can pay the price and get beat at any time," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra told reporters. "It was urgency and attention to detail that we lacked." Despite the large margin of defeat, Spoelstra didn't use Dion Waiters, prompting the shooting guard to say, "At the end of the day, that's the coach. He controls all that. That's out of my control. The only thing I can do is be ready."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Heat have won five of the past seven meetings.

2. Miami C Hassan Whiteside had just four rebounds (and two points) against the Hawks after averaging 14.3 boards over his previous three games.

3. Denver PF Paul Millsap had just six points on 2-of-6 shooting against Houston after averaging 14.7 points over the previous three games.

PREDICTION: Heat 106, Nuggets 104

Atlanta Hawks vs. Toronto Raptors Preview and Predictions 2019-01-08

NBA Predictions 7th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/07/2019

The Toronto Raptors just knocked off their two closest competitors in the Eastern Conference to become the first team in the NBA to reach 30 wins and re-establish themselves as the class of the conference. The Raptors will try to maintain their edge when they host the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday.

Toronto pulled out a 123-116 victory at Milwaukee on Saturday and had enough energy left over to knock off the Indiana Pacers 121-105 on the second night of a back-to-back on Sunday thanks to Norman Powell stepping up with 23 points on 10-of-12 shooting off the bench. "I feel really confident," Powell told reporters. "I think the coaching staff is trusting me; I've talked to them, broken down film and things like that and talking with me where I can find my spots to be aggressive and help the team and where I fit in. I feel good, just going out there and seeing what the defense is doing, see what the defense is giving me and picking my spots." The Hawks are hanging around the bottom of the standings in the East, though they are putting up some competitive performances of late. Atlanta snapped a three-game slide with a 106-82 triumph at home over the Miami Heat on Sunday and earned the win in six of the last 10 contests.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FS Southeast (Atlanta), TSN (Toronto) LINE: Raptors -14.5

ABOUT THE HAWKS (12-27): Atlanta put together one of its best performances of the season on Sunday, holding the Heat to 35.6 percent from the floor while dominating the glass 67-52. Power forward John Collins led the way on the boards with 13 rebounds to go with 13 points in his 14th double-double of the season - sixth in the last eight games. Five other players grabbed at least seven boards in the win including rookie shooting guard Kevin Huerter, who showed off his range of skills with 10 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and three steals.

ABOUT THE RAPTORS (30-12): Toronto rested star forward Kawhi Leonard on Sunday but point guard Kyle Lowry (back) returned after a six-game absence. "He pushes the tempo and, I don't know, just him, you can't really put it into context, but he just does a good job of bringing energy, pushing the pace, doing the little things, taking charges, being scrappy," point guard Delon Wright told the Toronto Sun of Lowry's contributions. Lowry contributed 12 points, eight assists and three steals to Sunday's victory but told reporters that his back was something that will need to continue to be monitored going forward.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Raptors SG Danny Green is 7-of-11 from 3-point range over the last two games after missing all eight of his attempts in the previous two contests.

2. Hawks SF DeAndre' Bembry is averaging 18 points over the last two games, pushing his season mark to 8.5.

3. Toronto took the last five in the series, including a 124-108 win at Atlanta in the first meeting this season on Nov. 21.

PREDICTION: Raptors 121, Hawks 112

Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Oklahoma City Thunder Preview and Predictions 2019-01-08

NBA Predictions 7th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/07/2019

The Minnesota Timberwolves are making some drastic changes to their basketball operations, from the front office down to the bench. The Timberwolves will be operating under an interim coach when they visit the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday after firing head coach and president of basketball operations Tom Thibodeau on Sunday.

Minnesota fired Thibodeau after he led the team to a 108-86 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday, but the Timberwolves are two games under .500 nearing the halfway point of the season after expecting to contend. "We've gone ... halfway through the season, and I don't think we're where we thought we would be, or where we think we should be," Minnesota owner Glen Taylor told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "We still have hopes to get into the playoffs, and I think with half the season left, let's see if this change will make a difference." The Thunder aren't dealing with that sort of organizational upheaval but will need to bounce back after a disappointing 116-98 loss to the Washington Wizards at home on Sunday. "We did well on the road, we had some big games that we won and just one of those nights you come home and you see an opponent like the Wizards ... you just fall into that trap," Oklahoma City forward Paul George told reporters.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBATV, FS North (Minnesota), FS Oklahoma LINE: Thunder -8

ABOUT THE TIMBERWOLVES (19-21): Minnesota named assistant Ryan Saunders - son of former coach Flip Saunders - the interim coach while general manager Scott Layden will take over some of Thibodeau's front office responsibilities. "Ryan has been around now quite a few years," Taylor told the Star Tribune. "He knows the players. The players know him. I just think that's very helpful, looking at our staff, I think he was probably the best candidate to move ahead. ... My hope would be that Ryan takes over and we play well or good enough to get into the playoffs and do well there and that Ryan would earn to be the permanent coach." The Timberwolves are winners of back-to-back games and five of their last eight.

ABOUT THE THUNDER (25-14): Russell Westbrook posted his third triple-double in the last four games with 22 points, 15 rebounds and 13 assists on Sunday but committed eight of the team's 15 turnovers. "We've talked about (Westbrook) advance passing and getting it up there. We want him to do that," Oklahoma City coach Billy Donovan told reporters. "A couple of those passes, to be honest with you, if they were probably a few more inches just a little bit further, they probably would have ended in some dunks." George added 20 points in the loss - the 14th straight game in which he scored 20 or more.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Timberwolves PG Jeff Teague is averaging 19 points and 10.5 assists in two games since returning from an ankle injury.

2. Thunder PG Dennis Schroder is 14-of-51 from the floor over the last four games.

3. Minnesota earned a 114-112 win at Oklahoma City on Dec. 23 behind 30 points from SG Andrew Wiggins.

PREDICTION: Thunder 116, Timberwolves 106

Kings vs. Suns Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 01/08/2019

The struggling Phoenix Suns look to halt their six-game losing streak when they host the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday. Phoenix has recorded just nine wins at the season's midway point and is on pace to finish with fewer than 20 for just the second time in franchise history.

Devin Booker has been the bright spot for the Suns, but he is questionable for the contest after leaving Sunday's loss to Charlotte with back spasms. The guard's availability will be determined either at the mid-day shootaround or closer to game time, depending on the level of soreness he is feeling. Sacramento snapped its four-game slide with a solid 111-95 home win over Orlando on Monday in which it led by 28 points entering the final quarter. "We definitely needed that," Kings point guard De'Aaron Fox told reporters after scoring 20 points and matching his career best of five steals. "We have given a few of the previous games away, and it was good for us to take control."

TV: 9 p.m. ET, NBCS California (Sacramento), FS Arizona (Phoenix) LINE: Kings -3.5

ABOUT THE KINGS (20-20): Prized rookie Marvin Bagley III returned from an 11-game absence due to a knee injury to contribute eight points and six rebounds in 20 minutes against Orlando. Coach Dave Joerger was unsure if he will play Bagley on the back end of consecutive games, but the No. 2 overall draft pick professed his knee is 100 percent after Monday's performance. "My game is getting up and down fast and creating for my teammates," Bagley told reporters. "I felt like I was able to do that."

ABOUT THE SUNS (9-32): Booker was limited to 54 games last season due to injuries and already has missed 10 this campaign as his durability is becoming a concern. First-year coach Igor Kokoskov denies that the issue is becoming troublesome, but it is clear his squad is deeply affected when it's missing a player who is averaging 24.8 points and 6.9 assists. "There is no frustration - that's just the basketball game," Kokoskov told reporters after Monday's practice. "He has to invest a lot of time and everything else in his body and understand that he's got to be in top shape."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Kings SG Buddy Hield scored 20 points in a 122-105 road win over the Suns on Dec. 4.

2. Phoenix SF Josh Jackson scored a season-best 22 points in the loss to Charlotte.

3. Sacramento SG Iman Shumpert (right index finger) could miss his third straight game.

Charlotte Hornets vs. LA Clippers Preview and Predictions 2019-01-08

NBA Predictions 7th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/07/2019

The Charlotte Hornets are in the midst of a six-game road trip and a stretch of nine of 11 away from home and will try to move to 2-1 in that span when they visit the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday. The Hornets began the excursion with a 123-110 loss at Western Conference-leading Denver on Saturday but picked it up on the second night of a back-to-back and grabbed a 119-113 triumph at Phoenix on Sunday.

Charlotte is trying to get back to .500 and shook off a slow start by dominating late in the victory over the Suns. "We just played with more energy and effort (in the second half)," forward Marvin Williams told reporters. "We didn't play with the most energy and effort in the first half and Phoenix did a great job of taking advantage of that. We decided in the second half to come out and really pick it up. We were able to get stops and keep scoring on offense." The Clippers won each of their last two games and six of nine after picking off the Orlando Magic 106-96 in the opener of the two-game homestand on Sunday. Los Angeles held the Magic to 37.1 percent from the floor in limiting an opponent to fewer than 100 points for the first time since a 96-86 loss at Memphis on Dec. 5.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, FS Southeast (Charlotte), FS Prime Ticket (Los Angeles) LINE: Clippers -6.5

ABOUT THE HORNETS (19-20): The key to Charlotte's strong play late on Sunday was star guard Kemba Walker, who scored 18 of his 29 points in the final five minutes. "I was just being aggressive," Walker told reporters. "(Backup point guard) Tony (Parker) did a great job of holding it down and I wanted to come in, be aggressive and make plays. I was able to get downhill and get to the basket and free-throw line as well. ... Everybody on my team wanted me to be aggressive." Walker went 10-of-31 from the floor in back-to-back losses and was 4-of-12 on Sunday before breaking out late and knocking down five of his last eight field-goal attempts.

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (23-16): Tobias Harris reached 20 points once in the previous five games and started off slow on Sunday before finding his rhythm and pouring in a team-high 28 points in the win. "It was definitely a tough start for us, myself included, but one thing my teammates kept telling me was 'keep getting to your spots, your shots are going to fall,'" Harris told reporters. "'Get downhill and create some plays.' That's what we were able to do." Harris helped make up for an off-night from fellow forward Danilo Gallinari, who went 5-of-16 from the floor and 2-of-10 from beyond the arc in the victory.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Hornets SG Jeremy Lamb (hamstring) sat out the last three games and is day-to-day.

2. Clippers G Avery Bradley is 4-of-14 from the floor over the last two games and is shooting 38.5 percent on the season.

3. Los Angeles won seven of the last eight in the series.

Knicks vs. Warriors Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 01/08/2019

The Golden State Warriors look to extend their winning streak in the all-time series to 10 games when they host the New York Knicks on Tuesday. Golden State rolled to a 128-100 victory in New York on Oct. 26 for its 26th triumph in the last 32 meetings.

The Warriors have cranked up the offense to an average of 131 points over their last three games and knocked down 21 3-pointers in Saturday's 127-123 victory over Sacramento. However, Golden State has lost its last three home contests as it was routed by 26 points by the Los Angeles Lakers and dropped one-point overtime decisions to both Portland and Houston. The Knicks are 1-4 on their six-game road trip and have lost 14 of their last 16 contests after falling 111-101 to the Trail Blazers on Monday. "I felt like the first three games of this new year, we have really come out to compete on the road and really fight to give ourselves a chance to win on the road, and hopefully we can keep building off of it," New York coach David Fizdale told reporters after the loss to Portland.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, NBA TV, MSG (New York), NBCS Bay Area (Golden State)

ABOUT THE KNICKS (10-30): Emmanuel Mudiay (17 points) and Noah Vonleh (16, 14 rebounds) were the only starters who scored in double digits against the Trail Blazers. Vonleh, who matched his career high for points, has collected 10 or more rebounds in seven of his last eight games while the double-double was his 13th of the season and came against the team with which he played parts of three seasons. "I was happy for Noah Vonleh coming back and showing he belongs in this league," Fizdale told reporters. "Mudiay is continuing to grow and develop."

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (26-14): Stephen Curry drained 10 3-pointers while scoring 42 points against the Kings and is averaging 37 over his last three games. Curry has made 20 shots from beyond the arc over his last three contests and enjoyed the matchup versus Sacramento as the two teams combined for an NBA-record 41 3-pointers. "It's a fun way to play, especially when you're shooting a high percentage," Curry told reporters. "You can shoot as many 3s as you want to, but shooting a high percentage the way it was on both ends was pretty crazy."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Warriors have won the last four home meetings and 14 of the last 16.

2. Golden State SF Kevin Durant scored 29 points against the Kings and has recorded 25 or more in each of his last five contests.

3. New York PG Frank Ntilikina (ankle) will miss his second straight game and may be sidelined the rest of the week.

PREDICTION: Warriors 131, Knicks 106

Florida Panthers vs. Pittsburgh Penguins Preview and Predictions 2019-01-08

NHL Predictions 7th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/07/2019

The Pittsburgh Penguins may have seen their season-high eight-game winning streak come to an end in their last outing, but the defeat did not slow down Kris Letang. The defenseman carries a season-high seven-game point streak (three goals, seven assists) into Tuesday's contest as the Penguins wrap up a three-game homestand versus the Florida Panthers.

Letang recorded a point for the 10th time in his last 11 games by setting up Jake Guentzel's first-period goal in Sunday's 5-3 setback to Chicago. Guentzel (two goals, two assists) joins Evgeni Malkin (one goal, three assists), Dominik Simon (two goals, two assists) and defenseman Marcus Pettersson (three assists) with three-game point streaks for Pittsburgh, which looks to finish off its homestand on a high note before heading west for a five-game road trip. Florida opens a five-game trek after answering a 6-2-0 stretch with back-to-back 4-3 losses against Buffalo and Columbus, with the latter setback coming in overtime at BB&T Center on Saturday. "We had a lot of great parts in the game, a lot of great pushes, but the one big mistake keeps haunting us. We've got to get better at that," Panthers coach Bob Boughner said.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Florida, AT&T SportsNet-Pittsburgh

ABOUT THE PANTHERS (17-16-7): Mike Hoffman has been on a goal-scoring binge, tallying in back-to-back contests and five times over his last seven games to boost his club-best total to 20. Jonathan Huberdeau also tallied versus the Blue Jackets to continue his stellar surge, as the 25-year-old has recorded 31 (seven goals, 24 assists) of his team-leading 46 points over the last 22 games. Huberdeau collected four points in three meetings last season with Pittsburgh, highlighted by a two-goal performance in a 4-3 setback on Oct. 14, 2017.

ABOUT THE PENGUINS (23-13-6): Captain Sidney Crosby, who leads the team in goals (19), assists (32) and points (51), owns a six-game home point streak (eight goals, four assists) against Florida while fellow forward Phil Kessel carries a four-game assist streak (five total) versus the club into Tuesday's tilt. While Crosby and Kessel tend to secure the majority of the headlines, the second line of Malkin, Patric Hornqvist and Simon have combined for 11 points (four goals, seven assists) in its last three contests overall. Hornqvist, in fact, has six points (three goals, three assists) in his last six games overall while Malkin has multiple points in his last two contests versus the Panthers, collecting three goals and two assists in that stretch.

OVERTIME

1. Pittsburgh C Derick Brassard has scored six of his seven goals on home ice.

2. Panthers G Roberto Luongo owns a 15-10-5 mark with four shutouts in 33 career encounters with the Penguins.

3. Letang will move past Rick Kehoe (722) on Tuesday for sole possession of sixth place on the franchise's all-time games played list.

PREDICTION: Panthers 4, Penguins 2

Carolina Hurricanes vs. New York Islanders Preview and Predictions 2019-01-08

NHL Predictions 7th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/07/2019

After breezing through a rugged stretch over the past three weeks, the surging New York Islanders will not have to leave the state for the next six games as they look to continue their push for a playoff spot. Winners of a season-high six in a row and nine of 10, New York plays five of its next six at home beginning with Tuesday's matchup versus the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Islanders rallied for three goals in the third period for a 4-3 victory at St. Louis on Saturday despite mustering a season-low 14 shots on goal. "Good teams, they find ways to win when they're not playing well," forward Jordan Eberle said after New York earned its sixth road win in the torrid 10-game span. "As a group, we're definitely feeling confident." The Hurricanes have taken advantage of a soft spot in their schedule, beating a pair of last-place clubs three times during their four-game winning streak after opening a three-game road trip with a 5-4 victory at Ottawa. Carolina is seeking a season-high fifth straight win but up next are two of the league's hottest clubs in the Islanders and NHL-best Tampa Bay.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS-Carolina, MSG Plus (New York)

ABOUT THE HURRICANES (19-17-5): Carolina has received offensive contributions from its blue-line corps during the winning streak, with the defensemen accounting for five goals and nine assists. Dougie Hamilton, part of the blockbuster trade with the Calgary Flames in the offseason, has led the charge by scoring in each of the past three games and is vying to become the first defenseman in franchise history to notch a goal in four consecutive games. "Our D is supposed to be the strong part of our team," Hamilton said after Sunday's victory. "Everyone on our D can score goals, get in the rush and make plays."

ABOUT THE ISLANDERS (23-13-4): Goaltender Robin Lehner has been one of the driving forces in the winning streak, earning his seventh consecutive victory against St. Louis and earning NHL Third Star of the Week honors on Monday after posting a 3-0-0 mark with a 1.99 goals-against average and .935 save percentage. Still, coach Barry Trotz did not name his goaltender for Tuesday's game and could go with Thomas Greiss, who already has beaten the Hurricanes three times this season, allowing one goal in each matchup. Center Valtteri Filppula (upper body) returned to practice Monday after missing two games.

OVERTIME

1. New York has not won seven in a row since a nine-game winning streak from Dec. 31, 1989 to Jan. 19, 1990.

2. Hamilton, who had a career-high 17 goals last season, had only three tallies and 10 points prior to his three-game binge.

3. The Islanders are 10-3-1 against Metropolitan Division rivals.

PREDICTION: Islanders 3, Hurricanes 2

New Jersey Devils vs. Buffalo Sabres Preview and Predictions 2019-01-08

NHL Predictions 7th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/07/2019

The slumping Buffalo Sabres are unsure if captain Jack Eichel will be back in the lineup for Tuesday night's matchup against the visiting New Jersey Devils. Eichel was back at practice on Monday after sitting out the past two games due to an upper-body injury but coach Phil Housley said he would not know until Tuesday if his top scorer will be available to play.

Although Buffalo has lost four of its last five (1-3-1) and scored a combined five goals in the four defeats, Eichel is taking a long-range approach regarding his health. "It's not a rush. You don't want to put yourself in a bad position," Eichel said. "You want to make sure you're comfortable in every situation that you put yourself in, myself and the team." New Jersey also is missing its leading scorer in reigning NHL MVP Taylor Hall, but the team has managed to go 4-2-0 in his absence entering the finale of a four-game road trip. The Devils own a six-game point streak (5-0-1) against the Sabres and have won their last six visits to Buffalo.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, MSG (New Jersey), MSG-Buffalo

ABOUT THE DEVILS (16-18-7): New Jersey did not practice Monday so there were no medical updates on Hall and rookie netminder MacKenzie Blackwood, who was injured in Friday's win at Arizona and was not available to serve as a backup to Keith Kinkaid in Sunday's loss to Vegas. Kinkaid is a logical choice to get the nod against Buffalo -- he has won all three career starts against the Sabres while turning aside 80 of 83 shots. Center Nico Hischier, the top overall pick in the 2017 draft, has scored in back-to-back contests to give him five goals and nine points over his last 10 games.

ABOUT THE SABRES (22-14-6): While Eichel's status was the No. 1 topic Monday, forward Zemgus Girgensons went through his first full practice with the team since Dec. 22 and skated on a line with Casey Mittelstadt and C.J. Smith. "(Mittelstadt's) a skilled guy," Girgensons said. "Smith has good puck vision and good handling, so I've just got to keep doing my job, create space for them, and good things will happen." If Eichel does not play, Buffalo could be without two-thirds of its top line as forward Sam Reinhart did not practice for the second straight day due to illness.

OVERTIME

1. Sabres backup G Linus Ullmark has started the past two games with G Carter Hutton mired in a six-game winless drought (0-4-2).

2. Devils F Kyle Palmieri has reached 20 goals in four straight seasons but has just two in 10 games against Buffalo.

3. Sabres F Jeff Skinner has 28 goals on the season and 13 tallies in 31 games versus New Jersey.

PREDICTION: Devils 3, Sabres 2

Minnesota Wild vs. Boston Bruins Preview and Predictions 2019-01-08

NHL Predictions 7th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/07/2019

With their lineup nearly back to full health, the Boston Bruins will look to extend their winning streak to a season-high five games as they resume a four-game homestand against the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday night. Boston beat Atlantic Division-rival Buffalo for the second time during its four-game winning streak to improve to 15-5-0 at TD Garden.

The Bruins have won seven of nine and are receiving offensive support throughout the lineup, a welcome change after they were so reliant on the No. 1 line for much of the early season. "It's huge. Obviously you saw it last game, over this stretch," forward Jacob DeBrusk said. "You need secondary scoring to win games in this league. Guys have a done great job here." The Wild will look to complete a perfect four-game road trip against Boston, where they have won eight of their last 11 meetings. Minnesota made it three wins in a row for the first time since Nov. 8-11 by blanking Montreal 1-0 on Monday night following identical 4-3 decisions over Ottawa and Toronto.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, Sportsnet, FS North, FS Wisconsin (Minnesota), NESN (Boston)

ABOUT THE WILD (21-17-3): Mikael Granlund took over the team scoring lead from Zach Parise in clutch fashion Monday night, ending a 15-game goal drought with an unassisted third-period tally for the decisive marker to give him 39 points. With Devan Dubnyk registering his first shutout of the season and 30th career in the win over Montreal, backup Alex Stalock is expected to be in net versus Boston in his first start since Dec. 6 at Calgary. Coach Bruce Boudreau did not have an update on forward Eric Fehr, who had to exit Monday's game after he was knocked into the boards by Montreal's Kenny Agostino.

ABOUT THE BRUINS (24-14-4): Goaltender Tuukka Rask has shrugged off a slow start to win all three starts while allowing a total of five goals since the Christmas break. "He does look comfortable, maybe part of that is he's getting more reps in the net," Boston coach Bruce Cassidy said. "He's certainly earning them. It appears to be his time of year, off he goes and we're just going to ride it. If that what he brings, awesome." David Backes looked at home on the No. 2 line with David Krejci and DeBrusk in his return from a three-game suspension, scoring a goal and registering five shots on net versus Buffalo.

OVERTIME

1. Rask is 4-3-1 with a 1.97 goals-against average in his career versus Minnesota.

2. Wild captain Mikko Koivu is one goal shy of 200 for his career.

3. Boston D Charlie McAvoy (lower body), out the past five games, skated Monday for the first time since he was hurt.

Flyers vs. Capitals Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 01/07/2019

The Washington Capitals didn't exactly put forth an awe-inspiring performance in their last outing, but the result proved to be just enough to prevent their first four-game skid since March 2017. The Capitals will look for a better effort on Tuesday when the Metropolitan Division leaders host the team making itself comfortable in the division's cellar: the free-falling Philadelphia Flyers.

For a club that boasts 14-time 30-goal scoring dynamo Alex Ovechkin, Washington received an offensive jolt from unlikely sources as Travis Boyd netted his fourth tally at 6:19 of the third period and Michal Kempny added his fifth with 3:52 remaining of Sunday's 3-2 win over Detroit. Habitual line-stepper Tom Wilson moved within two tallies of last season's career high by scoring his 12th goal in 22 games for Washington, which is facing Philadelphia for the first time in 2018-19 after dropping three of four encounters last campaign. The fledgling Flyers fell for the seventh straight game (0-5-2) and sustained their sixth shutout loss of the season in Monday's 3-0 setback to St. Louis -- to a goaltender (Jordan Binnington) that was making his first NHL start, no less. Rookie Carter Hart turned aside 34 shots versus the Blues, but Michal Neuvirth is in line to start Tuesday's tilt against his former team.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network, TVAS, NBCS Washington

ABOUT THE FLYERS (15-21-6): Captain Claude Giroux, who leads the team in assists (33) and points (46), has been kept off the scoresheet in five of his last seven outings while Sean Couturier (club-best 15 goals) has been held without a point in five of his last six. Both forwards look to get off their respective slides at the expense of Washington, against which Giroux collected five points (two goals, three assists) in four meetings while Couturier had seven (two goals, five assists). Jakub Voracek also collected two goals and five assists versus the Capitals last season, although he has been kept off the scoresheet in four of six outings after notching a point in 11 of his previous 13.

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (25-12-4): Coach Todd Reirden's decision to reunite Washington's top line of Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Wilson from the playoffs paid immediate benefits as Kuznetsov corralled a loose puck in front of the net and alertly fed Wilson on the right side for a one-timer at 6:57 of the first period. "That's what you've got to do in this league," Wilson said of shaking things up, per the Washington Post. "It hasn't been coming easy for us the last couple of games, and it's huge to be able to turn that one around and finish on a strong note. It's a tough league, and you've got to be sure you end those little skids." Kuznetsov's assist accounted for his 300th career point before he set up Kempny's game-winning tally.

OVERTIME

1. Philadelphia has mustered just 12 goals during its seven-game losing streak.

2. Ovechkin has flustered the Flyers throughout his career, to the tune of 55 points (33 goals, 22 assists) in 49 career encounters.

3. Philadelphia D Ivan Provorov, who has just 13 points this season, had four (one goal, three assists) against Washington in 2017-18.

Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Tampa Bay Lightning Preview and Predictions 2019-01-08

NHL Predictions 7th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/07/2019

The NHL-best Tampa Bay Lightning must rebound from a regulation loss for the first time since late November when they open a two-game homestand against the surging Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday night. The Lightning had gone 15-0-1 to pull within two games of the franchise-record point streak before hitting the post three times and dropping a 5-2 decision at San Jose on Saturday.

"We've got a lot of pride in here," Tampa Bay defenseman Ryan McDonagh told reporters. "We're proud of what we've accomplished, but there are a lot of games left. We should feel confident thinking where this team is headed." The Lightning, who lead the league in scoring (4.12) and on the power play (30.1 percent), will go after a fifth straight victory over the Blue Jackets after routing them 8-2 in Tampa on Oct. 13 with a pair of goals from Brayden Point. Columbus has points in nine of its last 11 games (8-2-1), but had dropped two of three before grinding out a 4-3 win at Florida on Saturday after defenseman Seth Jones' goal 18 seconds into overtime for coach John Tortorella's 599th career win. "Every team wants to stay away from any of those valleys, as far as winning and losing," Tortorella, who recorded 239 wins and a Stanley Cup with Tampa Bay, told reporters Saturday. "I think we've answered a number of different situations this year that way."

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FS Ohio (Columbus), FS Sun (Tampa Bay)

ABOUT THE BLUE JACKETS (24-14-3): Left wing Artemi Panarin is on one of his best offensive surges of the season, making the scoresheet in seven straight games with four goals and seven assists, to lead the team with 45 points. Right wing Cam Atkinson has been blanked in the last two contests, but tops Columbus with 24 goals at the midpoint of the season, while Jones posted a point in his last five outings. However, the Blue Jackets have not been able to solve their problems on a power play that ranks last in the league (12.9 percent) after going 0-for-23 in the last 10 contests.

ABOUT THE LIGHTNING (32-8-2): Right wing Nikita Kucherov saw his 12-game point streak come to an end and posted a minus-4 rating against San Jose, but leads the league with 69 points after a relatively slow start to the season. Point (team-most 24 goals) also saw an eight-game point streak end last time out, while captain Steven Stamkos had an assist Saturday after scoring once and setting up two at Los Angeles on Thursday. Defenseman Victor Hedman has registered a goal and six assists during a six-game point streak and has 15 of his 26 points this season on the power play.

OVERTIME

1. Columbus captain F Nick Foligno could miss his fourth straight game to be with his five-year-old daughter, who is recovering from surgery.

2. Tampa Bay G Andrei Vasilevskiy has two shutouts and a .934 save percentage in six career games against the Blue Jackets.

3. Blue Jackets D Zach Werenski needs one goal to reach double digits for the third straight season and boasts seven points in the last seven games.

Montreal Canadiens vs. Detroit Red Wings Preview and Predictions 2019-01-08

NHL Predictions 7th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/07/2019

Success has been difficult for the Detroit Red Wings to attain, regardless of where they play. Detroit looks to begin turning around its fortunes when it completes its five-game homestand Tuesday against an Original Six rival, the Montreal Canadiens.

The Red Wings have gone 1-2-1 during the stretch at Little Caesars Arena and have lost 11 of their last 13 overall (2-8-3) after dropping a 3-2 decision to Washington on Sunday. Anthony Mantha scored to become the fifth player to reach double digits in goals for Detroit, which is 2-6-2 in its last 10 at home. Montreal is coming off a 1-2-0 homestand that concluded Monday with a 1-0 loss to Minnesota. The Canadiens, who scored a total of three goals during the string at Bell Centre, have won four of their last five on the road.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, TSN2, RDS (Montreal), FS Detroit

ABOUT THE CANADIENS (22-16-5): The oft-injured David Schlemko appears to be on his way out of Montreal as the defenseman was placed on waivers Monday. The 31-year-old veteran has notched two assists in 18 games this season and 94 points in 415 career contests with seven teams. Carey Price, who has allowed a total of four goals in three contests since returning from a nagging lower-body injury, has elected to forego participating in the All-Star Game.

ABOUT THE RED WINGS (16-21-7): Dylan Larkin has landed on the scoresheet in 16 of his last 17 contests, collecting eight goals and 11 assists in that span. The 22-year-old center leads the team with 18 tallies, 41 points and four game-winning goals - all in overtime. Dallas Stars vs. St. Louis Blues Preview and Predictions 2019-01-08

NHL Predictions 7th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/07/2019

The Dallas Stars saw their five-game point streak come to an abrupt halt last time out and will try to move in a positive direction again when they visit the last-place St. Louis Blues on Tuesday in a battle of Central Division rivals. The Stars went 4-0-1, a stretch that included wins over Nashville and Washington, before giving up five unanswered goals after taking a second-period lead in a 5-1 setback at Winnipeg on Sunday.

"I think it's going to get harder," Dallas coach Jim Montgomery told reporters of his team's road ahead while sitting in a playoff position. "The intensity of the second half is going to pick up and, you know, that's one of our better road games of the year (on Sunday) and we still didn't come out on top. So you know we still got to keep staying with it and get better." The Stars won the final three meetings of 2017-18 - all at home - but have dropped seven straight regular-season games at St. Louis, which has won two of its last three overall. Jordan Binnington gave No. 1 goaltender Jake Allen (8-4-0 lifetime versus Dallas) a day off Monday and turned aside all 25 shots he faced to earn a shutout in his first NHL start as the Blues won 3-0 at Philadelphia. Ryan O'Reilly leads St. Louis with 40 points and is riding a six-game streak while David Perron brings a seven-game run into the matchup versus the Stars, against whom he's registered 10 goals and 13 assists in 32 career contests.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FS Southwest (Dallas), FS Midwest (St. Louis)

ABOUT THE STARS (22-17-4): Tyler Seguin has picked up his production level during a five-game point streak, scoring four goals while setting up three others, and leads the team with 39 points. Alexander Radulov also is wielding a hot stick, notching six of his 37 points in the last three games, and captain Jamie Benn has scored two of his team-best 17 goals over the last three contests. Defenseman John Klingberg (67 points last season) recorded just one point in his first five games following a lengthy stint on injured reserve but has registered four assists in his last four contests.

ABOUT THE BLUES (17-19-4): Vladimir Tarasenko scored on Monday to snap his five-game drought while Brayden Schenn has recorded a goal in back-to-back contests for the first time this season. Tyler Bozak joined the team in Philadelphia but was scratched due to an upper-body injury while Alex Steen left Monday's game with a similar ailment. Captain Alex Pietrangelo notched an assist for his third point in three games while fellow defenseman Carl Gunnarsson set up a goal for his first point of the season.

OVERTIME

1. St. Louis LW Jaden Schwartz has notched an assist in three consecutive games but has gone eight contests without a goal.

2. Dallas G Ben Bishop, who started his career with the Blues, is 4-5-1 with a .921 save percentage in 10 games against his former team.

3. The Blues are 1-for-18 on the power play over their last six contests, while the Stars have scored with the man advantage in five straight games.

Colorado Avalanche vs. Winnipeg Jets Preview and Predictions 2019-01-08

NHL Predictions 7th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/07/2019

The Colorado Avalanche travel to Winnipeg to face the Jets on Tuesday, and both squads feel better after snapping out of recent slumps with emphatic victories last weekend. The Avalanche squashed a six-game losing streak Friday by pounding the Rangers 6-1 as Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen each finished with three points, while the Jets defeated Dallas 5-1 on Sunday for their second victory in five games as five different Winnipeg players scored.

The Jets uncharacteristically have struggled offensively of late, scoring seven goals in their previous five games before Bryan Little and defenseman Josh Morrissey paced Winnipeg on Sunday with a goal and an assist apiece. "I thought we got back to a lot of the little things," Winnipeg defenseman Tyler Myers told reporters after the game, in which his fourth goal of the season served as the eventual game winner. "Forwards were quick down low, making quick passes, making quick plays." The Avalanche won for the first time since Jan. 19, ending an 0-4-2 stretch as MacKinnon finished with three points (one goal, two assists) entering a season-long five-game road trip. "We had to end (the skid) right now," Rantanen told the media afterward. "We still have half a year left and we're still sitting in a playoff spot, so it's in our own hands."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, Altitude TV (Denver), TSN3 (Winnipeg)

ABOUT THE AVALANCHE (20-14-8): MacKinnon's big night extended his point streak to six games (four goals, four assists) and gives him 63 points on the season (third in the NHL). Rantanen's two goals came on the power play to give him seven points in his past six games and 65 points this season (second in the league). Colorado finished 3-for-10 with the man advantage Friday, the most power-play opportunities for the Avalanche in a game since 2008.

ABOUT THE JETS (26-13-2): With forward Nikolaj Ehlers and defenseman Dustin Byfuglien sidelined by injuries, Winnipeg got a much-needed scoring boost Sunday from Myers, Little, Connor, Adam Lowry and Morrissey. Connor snapped an 11-game scoring drought early in the third period and Little's tally marked his first in 12 games. Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck shook off an early goal to make 26 saves to win for the second time in three games.

OVERTIME

1. Winnipeg F Blake Wheeler has 26 points (20 assists) in his past 20 games after picking up an assist Sunday, giving him a team-high 51 points.

2. Colorado D Tyson Barrie finished with three assists Friday, moving into first place in franchise history for points by a defenseman with 278.

3. Jets C Mark Scheifele snapped a four-game point drought with an assist Sunday, giving him 50 points on the season.

New York Rangers vs. Vegas Golden Knights Preview and Predictions 2019-01-08

NHL Predictions 7th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/07/2019

The Vegas Golden Knights have hit the jackpot with their play of late while the New York Rangers will go bankrupt if their defense continues to be as generous as it has been in recent outings. The Golden Knights aim to extend their season-high win streak to seven contests on Tuesday when they host the reeling Rangers, who have been outscored 18-3 in their last three games.

Max Pacioretty capped a whirlwind weekend in style, scoring his second game-winning goal in three nights while squeezing in the birth of his son, Michael, early Saturday morning in Las Vegas. The 30-year-old Pacioretty's heroics in Sunday's 3-2 victory over New Jersey allowed the Golden Knights to extend their point streak to nine games (7-0-2) and 11 on home ice (9-0-2), which is one behind their franchise record set last season. While Vegas has vaulted toward the top of the Pacific Division by posting a 17-3-3 mark in its last 23 contests, New York has dropped three straight five-goal decisions and 14 of 19 overall (5-9-5) to fall into sixth place in the Metropolitan. "We're fragile mentally and physically right now, the way things are going," Rangers coach David Quinn said following Sunday's 5-0 loss to Arizona.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, ESPN-Plus, Sportsnet360, Sportsnet East, Sportsnet Ontario, Sportsnet Pacific, MSG-Plus (New York), AT&T SportsNet-Rocky Mountains

ABOUT THE RANGERS (17-17-7): Chris Kreider rolled into the new calendar year with five of his club-best 20 goals to highlight a five-game point streak, only to be held off the scoresheet for the third straight outing on Sunday despite registering a team-high five shots on goal. The 27-year-old looks to locate his scoring touch versus Vegas, against which he scored in New York's 4-3 overtime loss on Dec. 16. Former Vezina Trophy recipient Henrik Lundqvist has been pulled in each of his last two games and has surrendered four goals in both career contests against the Golden Knights.

ABOUT THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS (26-15-4): New York native Alex Tuch is riding a career-best six-game point streak (two goals, five assists) and has 13 points (six goals, seven assists) in his last 16, including a two-point performance in which he scored 2:11 into overtime at Madison Square Garden last month. The 22-year-old continued his surge by setting up Pacioretty's goal in the second period versus the Devils, boosting his club-best totals in assists (19) and points (33). Paul Stastny scored and set up a goal in the first meeting with the Rangers, igniting a 10-point run (five goals, five assists) in his last 11 games.

OVERTIME

1. Vegas LW Brandon Pirri, who had nine points (six goals, three assists) in seven games in the NHL this season, was recalled from Chicago of the American Hockey League on Monday

2. Rangers C Mika Zibanejad leads the team in points (34), but his last goal came against the Golden Knights on Dec. 16.

3. Vegas' 17th-ranked power play is mired in an 0-for-16 rut.

Edmonton split the first two games of the trip before rolling to a 4-0 victory in Anaheim on Sunday. Defenseman Erik Karlsson set up all three goals in the win, giving him a total of 21 assists during his 13-game streak for the Sharks, who have earned points in seven of their last eight contests (5-1-2).

3. Edmonton C Ryan Nugent-Hopkins' next game will be his 500th in the NHL.

Texas A&M Aggies vs. Kentucky Wildcats Preview and Predictions 2019-01-08

NCAAB Predictions 7th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/07/2019

Kentucky has lost back-to-back games only 12 times under coach John Calipari and will try to avoid making it 13 when Texas A&M pays a visit to Rupp Arena on Tuesday night. The No. 18 Wildcats had a three-game winning streak snapped with a 77-75 loss at Alabama in their Southeastern Conference opener, a defeat that dropped the school four spots in the rankings.

Kentucky rallied from an 11-point deficit against the Crimson Tide and had a chance to win but Tyler Herro's 3-point attempt at the buzzer misfired. "Our league, including this Tuesday, they're all going to be close," Calipari told reporters. "They're all going to come down to the last five minutes." Texas A&M also went down to the wire in its conference opener before dropping a 73-71 decision to Arkansas, its second straight home defeat. "In this league, when you have an opportunity to win and you are at home, you got to win, so we just got to get to get better in the next couple of days and get ready for a good Kentucky team," Aggies coach Billy Kennedy said.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, SEC Network

ABOUT TEXAS A&M (6-6, 0-1 SEC): After coming off the bench in the last two non-conference games, T.J. Starks returned to the starting lineup and matched his career high with 23 points against Arkansas. Starks also had a team-high 17 points to lead Texas A&M to an 85-74 win over Kentucky last February in College Station. The Aggies continued to struggle from beyond the arc, making only 5 of 24 3-point attempts against Arkansas after going 9 of 28 in the stunning loss to Texas Southern in their previous game.

ABOUT KENTUCKY (10-3, 0-1): Four starters are averaging in double figures for the Wildcats, led by Keldon Johnson at 16.2 points per game, and that balance showed as all five starters had at least 12 points against Alabama. Kentucky struggled inside against the Crimson Tide, losing the battle of the boards 40-32 and managing only one blocked shot after registering at least four rejections in each of the first 12 games. Freshman guard Ashton Hagans scored a career-high 12 points to go with six assists and three steals.

TIP-INS

1. Wildcats F PJ Washington has at least seven rebounds in 10 of the last 11 games.

2. Aggies G Savion Flagg had 20 points and 15 rebounds versus Arkansas for his third career double-double.

3. Kentucky is 46-12 following a loss under Calipari.

Tennessee Volunteers vs. Missouri Tigers Preview and Predictions 2019-01-08

NCAAB Predictions 7th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/07/2019

After opening SEC play with a resounding victory, No. 3 Tennessee looks to run its winning streak to nine games when it visits Missouri for a conference matchup on Tuesday. It's the SEC opener for the Tigers, who enter with a six-game winning streak.

The Volunteers opened conference play with a 96-50 shellacking of visiting Georgia on Saturday - tied for their second-largest margin of victory all-time in SEC action. Tennessee already is off to its best start since 2007-08 and now has key reserve Lamonte Turner back from a nagging left shoulder injury. The Tigers have exceeded expectations in former Tennessee coach Cuonzo Martin's second season, getting off to a strong start despite losing star forward Jontay Porter to a season-ending injury in the preseason. Missouri has won each of its last five games by at least 14 points.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN2

ABOUT TENNESSEE (12-1, 1-0 SEC): The Vols are an offensive juggernaut led by the SEC's leading scorer in Grant Williams (19.9 points, 8.3 rebounds, 4.1 assists). The trio of Williams, Admiral Schofield (18.2 points, six rebounds) and 6-11 forward Kyle Alexander (10.4, 7.4) will be a tough matchup for the smaller Tigers. Point guard Jordan Bone (14 points, 6.4 assists) also is having a big season, and Turner's return adds depth to an already potent lineup.

ABOUT MISSOURI (9-3): The Tigers are not a dynamic offensive team, but they do lead the SEC in 3-point shooting at 39.3 percent. Jordan Geist (13.9 points) and Mark Smith (12, 5.4 rebounds) have lit it up from beyond the arc. The Tigers also are tough on the glass, having outrebounded 10 of their 12 opponents - with Jeremiah Tilmon (10.8 points, 6.7 rebounds) leading the way.

TIP-INS

1. Tennessee has not trailed in 110 minutes, 40 seconds of game action.

2. Missouri has not beaten a top-three team since winning at No. 3 Baylor on Jan. 21, 2012 and has not done so at home since upsetting No. 3 Oklahoma on Feb. 26, 2003.

3. The Tigers are 7-0 when committing fewer turnovers that the opposition.

Maryland Terrapins vs. Minnesota Golden Gophers Preview and Predictions 2019-01-08

NCAAB Predictions 7th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/07/2019

Minnesota looks to build off one of its best wins of the season when it hosts Maryland on Tuesday. The Golden Gophers knocked off Wisconsin 59-52 on Thursday to notch their first victory in the Border Battle series since 2014 while extending their winning streak to seven games and hope to continue their upward trajectory by improving to 8-0 at home.

"I try to stay even keeled, but it's a great win and another quality win for us," Minnesota coach Richard Pitino told reporters. "It's important for us to be able to compete in these Big Ten games and find a way to get some wins." Maryland is heading in the right direction after a 77-63 victory against Rutgers on Saturday. The Terrapins used a 16-0 first-half run to pull away from the Scarlet Knights en route to their fifth win in six games, and they hope to take another big step in their development by posting back-to-back road victories in conference play for the first time since Jan. 2017. "It's hard to win on the road and the way we did was good, but more importantly it's how we're playing," Maryland coach Mark Turgeon told reporters. "We are who we are, but we're getting better and we're talented so we're figuring it out and that's what's important."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, Big Ten Network

ABOUT MARYLAND (12-3, 3-1 Big Ten): Freshman phenom Jalen Smith scored a team-high 16 points and grabbed six rebounds against Rutgers after sinking the game-winning shot in the 74-72 victory against then No. 23 Nebraska on Jan. 2. Anthony Cowan Jr. added 15 points and three assists in the win against the Scarlet Knights to finish in double figures for the 19th consecutive time dating back to last season. Eric Ayala and Serrel Smith Jr. each tallied 11 points while Bruno Fernando narrowly missed out on his eighth double-double of the campaign after registering 10 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

ABOUT MINNESOTA (12-2, 2-1): Amir Coffey led the way with 21 points to go along with six rebounds in the win against Wisconsin to finish in double figures for the 13th time in 14 games. Dupree McBrayer added 14 points while Jordan Murphy, who has registered nine double-doubles in 2018-19, was limited to five points but pulled down 11 rebounds, and he needs nine points to become the ninth player in program history to reach 1,500 for his career. Eric Curry, who missed the first 12 games of the season with a knee injury, corralled five rebounds in his first conference contest since Mar. 5, 2017 while Nate Washington failed to see any action with Pitino revealing after the game it was purely a coach's decision.

TIP-INS

1. Minnesota is 7-0 in games decided by nine points or fewer.

2. Fernando leads the Big Ten in blocks per game (2.4).

3. Coffey tops the conference in scoring at 24 points per game.

St. John's Red Storm vs. Villanova Wildcats Preview and Predictions 2019-01-08

NCAAB Predictions 7th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/07/2019

Villanova is the defending NCAA champion, but St. John's is having a season more reminiscent of a championship campaign. The 23rd-ranked Red Storm put their 14-1 record on the line Tuesday when they visit the Wildcats in a Big East showdown.

St. John's has entered the Top 25 following a terrific first two months of the season that has featured only one loss - a controversial two-point defeat against Seton Hall. The team has won its last two games since then, including a squeaker at Georgetown over the weekend that fueled the Red Storm's return to the Top 25. "I think there's tremendous excitement, optimism, and a good feeling," coach Chris Mullin said. "I think it's great that our fan base has watched us throughout. They watched us struggle, improve, and now watch them have success. It's a genuine and authentic way to go about it." Villanova has won three straight, including Big East wins over DePaul and Providence, and hopes to avenge a loss to St. John's in the most recent meeting between the teams.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1

ABOUT ST. JOHN'S (14-1, 2-1 Big East): The Red Storm beat the Hoyas by three in overtime thanks to Shamorie Ponds' 37 points - his second 37-point effort of the season to go with performances of 35 and 32 points, as well as four other 20-point efforts. Overall, the junior standout is averaging 20.4 points while shooting over 50 percent from the field and better than 40 percent from the 3-point line - way up from his shooting percentages from the field (42.0) and the arc (25.3) a season ago. Justin Simon, who does a little bit of everything for St. John's, finished the Georgetown game with 14 points, nine rebounds, six assists, two steals and a pair of blocks.

ABOUT VILLANOVA (11-4, 2-0): Phil Booth (17.3 points) and Eric Paschall (15.7), both of whom have scored at least nine points in every game, are the senior leaders of a mostly inexperienced Wildcats team. Booth had 23 points against Providence and made multiple 3-pointers for the sixth straight game, while Paschall (13 points, 14 rebounds) notched his first double-double of the season. Cole Swider had perhaps the best game of his freshman season versus the Friars, finishing with 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting.

TIP-INS

1. Villanova G Collin Gillespie (11 ppg) has 11 total points on 4-of-14 shooting in the last two games.

2. St. John's F Marvin Clark II had shot at least 50 percent from the field in seven straight games before a 4-of-10 showing versus Georgetown.

3. Red Storm G Mustapha Heron (15.6 points) has committed at least four fouls in five straight outings.

Iowa State Cyclones vs. Baylor Bears Preview and Predictions 2019-01-08

NCAAB Predictions 7th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/07/2019

Iowa State sent a message to both the Big 12 and the NCAA at large by manhandling longtime conference power Kansas to receive its first national ranking since the 2016-17 season. The 20th-ranked Cyclones vie for their first 3-0 start in conference play since the 1999-2000 campaign when they visit Baylor on Tuesday at the Ferrell Center in Waco, Texas.

Freshman Tyrese Haliburton improved to 8-for-11 from long range by drilling four 3-point attempts in Saturday's resounding 77-60 triumph over Kansas, helping Iowa State to its fifth straight victory. "Tyrese has an infectious personality," Cyclones coach Steve Prohm said of Haliburton, who was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week. "He's got a pure heart. That's why he has been successful. He is just enjoying the journey." Baylor nearly pulled off quite the comeback in its conference opener, as its bid to erase a 19-point second-half deficit fell just a bit short in Saturday's 85-81 loss to TCU. "Down (19), we could have never made a run, but these guys are going to fight to the end," Bears coach Scott Drew said. "You just want to pull it out when you get there."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPNews

ABOUT IOWA STATE (12-2, 2-0 Big 12): Marial Shayok, who is averaging a team-best 20.1 points per game, poured in 24 versus the Jayhawks on 9-for-12 shooting to receive Big 12 Player of the Week honors. The senior guard made all five of his attempts from behind the arc, helping the Cyclones shoot a staggering 52.0 percent from 3-point range to chase Kansas out of Hilton Coliseum. Lindell Wigginton was not as fortunate following his 2-for-11 performance from the field on Saturday, but the sophomore guard erupted for a career-high 30 points in Iowa State's 75-65 win over Baylor in January 2018.

ABOUT BAYLOR (8-5, 0-1): Sophomore forward Tristan Clark answered his first double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds in the Bears' 84-44 romp over New Orleans on Dec. 29 by scoring a team-high 18 against the Horned Frogs. The sophomore forward has made at least 50 percent of his shots in every game and at least 60 percent in all but two contests this season. Clark, who leads the team in scoring (14.5) and rebounds (6.5), collected 16 points and a career-best 15 rebounds in the Bears' loss to Iowa State in January before mustering just two points in an 81-67 win over the Cyclones on Feb. 3.

TIP-INS

1. Baylor has won 13 of 15 all-time home meetings with Iowa State, with the latter's last victory coming in the 2012-13 season.

2. Cyclones G Nick Weiler-Babb recorded 15 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds in last season's January meeting with the Bears.

3. Bears G Makai Mason, who is a Yale transfer, has recorded double-digit scoring performances in nine of 10 games.

Buffalo and its balanced scoring attack host Toledo on Tuesday in a Mid-American Conference game. The 20th-ranked Bulls defeated Eastern Michigan 74-58 on Friday in their MAC opener behind senior forward Montell McRae, whose career-high 18 points - more than 11 above his season average - helped Buffalo overcome a slow start.

"We never know whose night it is to step up in the whole deal, and it was (McRae's) night to step up (Friday) and help us,'' Bulls coach Nate Oats told reporters. "Against Toledo, Tuesday, it might be somebody else's night to step up." Senior forward Nick Perkins, who scored 15 points against Eastern Michigan, reminded reporters that everything changes once conference season begins. "Conference play is a different beast than non-conference, so when you get into conference play, teams are more familiar with your offense and your defense and the way you play," Perkins told the media. "This was good for us. We won by a decent amount, but we've got a lot of stuff we need to work on." The Rockets saw their 10-game winning streak come to an end with a 79-64 loss to Ball State in their MAC opener.

Texas Longhorns vs. Oklahoma State Cowboys Preview and Predictions 2019-01-08

NCAAB Predictions 7th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/07/2019

Big 12 play is off to a favorable start for Texas, and Oklahoma State coach Mike Boynton knows the Longhorns won't feel sorry for his Cowboys and their 0-2 start in league play. Texas will try and begin 3-0 in conference play for the first time since 2010-11 on Tuesday when it visits the Cowboys, who are attempting to avoid a 0-3 start for the second time in three years.

Oklahoma State went 6-6 in non-conference play but dropped a 69-63 home contest to Iowa State before losing the first Bedlam matchup of the season at No. 22 Oklahoma 74-64 on Saturday. "We had a few breakdowns late in the game, which, they happen from time to time, but we've gotta get back and get better, and I know one thing, Texas, who is next on our schedule, won't feel sorry for us," Boynton told the Stillwater News Press. "They're hoping to make us 0-3, and so our message to our team is, anybody who feels sorry for themselves, don't show up to practice tomorrow, and I won't bother trying to play you on Tuesday." Texas, on the other hand, downed Kansas State by 20 in Manhattan to open league play and followed up with a near wire-to-wire 61-54 win over West Virginia. Sophomore guard Matt Coleman recorded a team-high 17 points and hit a step-back 3-pointer with 1:03 left to provide a five-point lead before sealing the victory about a half-minute later with two free throws.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPNU

ABOUT TEXAS (10-4, 2-0 Big 12): Coleman (10.5 points, 3.3 assists), who shot 6-of-10 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the foul line Saturday, added four rebounds and three assists without a turnover in 35 minutes as the Longhorns improved to 4-0 when shooting 50 percent from the floor. The Longhorns held the Mountaineers to 40 percent shooting, including 5-of-20 beyond the arc, and continue to impress on defense, surrendering just 50.5 points and yielding 36.3 percent shooting in the first two conference matchups, both tops in the Big 12.

ABOUT OKLAHOMA STATE (6-8, 0-2): Thomas Dziagwa (10.7 points, team-high 44 3-pointers, 45.8 3-point percentage) matched his season high with 16 points on a 4-for-8 performance beyond the arc against the Sooners. Super sub Michael Weathers (team-highs 18.6 points, 2.1 steals per 40 minutes) had 13 points, six assists and a season-high seven rebounds but shot just 3-of-12 from the floor. Junior forward Cameron McGriff leads the squad in scoring (13.2 points) and rebounding (8.0) but he's shooting just 38.5 percent from the field, while junior guard Lindy Waters III chips in 11.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.3 steals.

Duke looks to win its eighth in a row and second in conference play as it visits Wake Forest on Tuesday evening. The second-ranked Blue Devils opened ACC play with a resounding 87-68 win over Clemson on Saturday, while the Demon Deacons lost at Georgia Tech in their conference opener.

Freshman sensation Zion Williamson had 25 points and 10 rebounds, including a highlight reel 360-degree dunk that left even his coach Hall of Fame coach impressed. "There's no ceiling on how many times he can twirl, as long as he puts the damned thing in," Blue Devils coach Mike Krzyzewski told reporters after the game. Wake Forest allowed the Yellow Jackets to score their most points in an ACC regular-season game since 2005 in a 92-79 loss on Saturday, as Georgia Tech forward James Banks III scored 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting. "We had a tough time guarding Banks. We wanted to show a little bit more resistance in the paint in that regard," Wake Forest coach Danny Manning told the media after the loss.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT DUKE (12-1, 1-0 ACC): Williamson sits third in both ACC scoring (20.2 points) and rebounding (9.5) while also ranking second in field-goal percentage (66.4), fifth in blocks (1.9) and fifth in steals (2.1). RJ Barrett, the conference's leading scorer with 22.9 points per game, chipped in with 13 points against Clemson while adding nine rebounds and four assists. Tre Jones had a season-high nine assists while Cameron Reddish - the fourth member of Duke's impressive freshman class - struggled with just four points on 1-of-8 shooting and six turnovers.

ABOUT WAKE FOREST (7-6, 0-1): The Demon Deacons allowed the Yellow Jackets to shoot 55.8 percent from the field and are allowing opponents to shoot 44.9 percent on the season, which ranks 262nd out of 351 Division I teams. Offensively, junior guard Brandon Childress had a career night with highs in points (28) and 3-pointers (seven) and is averaging a team-best 17.8 points. Freshman Jaylen Hoard added 19 points on 6-of-15 shooting, while sophomore Chaundee Brown poured in 10.

TIP-INS

1. Duke has won eight straight against Wake Forest and owns a 171-78 advantage in the all-time series.

2. The Blue Devils lead the ACC and rank third in Division I at 91.2 points per game.

3. Childress average 36.5 minutes per game, second-most in the ACC.

PREDICTION: Duke 101, Wake Forest 76

Oklahoma Sooners vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders Preview and Predictions 2019-01-08

NCAAB Predictions 7th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/07/2019

The top defensive teams in the Big 12 will square off Tuesday when No. 8 Texas Tech puts its perfect home record up against No. 22 Oklahoma. The Red Raiders nearly squandered a 15-point halftime lead Saturday against Kansas State but escaped with a 63-57 victory to move to 2-0 in league play.

"I thought we showed grit," Texas Tech coach Chris Beard told reporters after his team committed 13 second-half turnovers. "We weren't playing our best at one point, but we hung in there. This is what the Big 12 is. I would love to come out here and play well for 38 minutes but that's not the reality of this league." The elite Red Raiders' defense showed up Saturday as they limited the Wildcats to 19 points on 23.1 percent shooting in the first half and they enter the week leading the nation in field goal percentage defense (33.4) and 3-point percentage defense (24.1). Oklahoma earned its first Big 12 victory Saturday in a 74-64 Bedlam win over Oklahoma State after the Sooners lost their conference opener 70-63 to No. 9 Kansas on Wednesday. Leading scorer Christian James (17.1 points per game) has recorded all six of his career double-doubles in his past seven games as the 6-4 guard finished Saturday's win with 14 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPNews

ABOUT OKLAHOMA (12-2, 1-1 Big 12): The Sooners are second in the league behind Texas Tech in field goal percentage defense (37.5) and limited the Cowboys - the Big 12's best 3-point shooting team (37.3 percent) - to a 6-for-26 shooting performance from downtown. "If we didn't stop (Oklahoma State), we would have been blown out," Sooners' forward Kristian Doolittle told the media after scoring a team-high 16 points Saturday. "We were able to disrupt their shooters, run them off the 3-point line. We did a good job executing our defense." The Sooners are sixth nationally in rebounding (43.5) and are led by James' 7.8 boards per game - fourth in the conference.

ABOUT TEXAS TECH (13-1, 2-0): The Red Raiders seemingly won Saturday's contest with their effort in the first 10 minutes as Kansas State missed its first 13 shots and Texas Tech scored the first 14 points. Davide Moretti led the Red Raiders with a career-high 19 points in Saturday's win while the Italian guard added four rebounds and two assists but committed a team-high five turnovers. Jarrett Culver sits second in Big 12 scoring (18.7 points per game) but had his worst offensive performance of the season as the focus of Kansas State's defense, finishing with a season-low nine points on 2-of-7 shooting in 37 minutes.

TIP-INS

1. Texas Tech is the only team in the country that has not allowed 70 points in a game this season.

2. Oklahoma owns a 37-24 series lead and have lost one home game against Texas Tech since the 2010-11 season.

3. The Red Raiders force their opponents into a league-best 17.3 turnovers a game.

PREDICTION: Texas Tech 65, Oklahoma 61

Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Louisiana State Tigers Preview and Predictions 2019-01-08

NCAAB Predictions 7th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/07/2019

With a stunning collapse against Georgia State just over a month ago in the back of its minds, Alabama did just enough to make sure to avoid a similar fate in a riveting home win versus No. 14 Kentucky over the weekend in its SEC opener. The Crimson Tide seek their second 2-0 start to conference play in three seasons and attempt to win six in a row for the first time under fourth-year coach Avery Johnson on Tuesday when they visit LSU.

Alabama, which coughed up a 22-point lead with just over 14 1/2 minutes remaining on Dec. 4 in an 83-80 loss to Georgia State when the Panthers buried a 3-pointer as time expired, almost had its hearts broken again Saturday as the Wildcats nearly clawed all the way back from an 11-point deficit with just over three minutes left. However, the Crimson Tide got the stop they needed this time when Kentucky guard Tyler Herro's 3-point attempt bounced off the rim in the waning seconds. Alabama's first potential six-game winning streak since 2014-15 won't come easy though, as the Tigers have won 15 straight in the Maravich Center. Rust could be a bit of a factor in this contest for LSU, which hasn't played a game since defeating Louisiana Monroe 81-69 on Dec. 28 to improve to 8-0 at home this season.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, SEC Network

ABOUT ALABAMA (10-3, 1-0 SEC): Tevin Mack (9.9 points) almost singlehandedly kept the Crimson Tide in the game early Saturday, going 6-for-6 from 3-point range en route to 20 of his team's 38 first-half points and the bulk of his season-high 22. Donta Hall (11.1 points, 8.3 rebounds) produced this third consecutive double-double with 11 points and 10 boards Saturday but did not record a block after rejecting 10 shots over the previous three games; he needs one more block to become the seventh player in program history to record 200 for his career. Sophomore Herbert Jones enjoyed the best all-round performance of his career against Kentucky, finishing with 10 points, eight rebounds and a career-best six assists without a turnover in 23 minutes.

ABOUT LSU (10-3, 0-0): After finding his groove while coming off the bench the previous two games, Tremont Waters - a 5-11 sophomore - returned to the starting lineup against the Warhawks and tallied 11 points, 10 assists and a career-high tying eight steals. The Tigers' four freshmen - Naz Reid, Emmitt Williams, Ja'vonte Smart and Darius Days - combined for 50 points, 27 rebounds and five blocks versus the Warhawks, most of which came from Reid as he supplied 17 points, 12 boards and a season-high four blocks. The three post players from that group - Reid, Williams and Days - shot 17-of-23 from the field, and Williams (12 points, eight boards) fell two rebounds short of giving LSU a third player with a double-double.

TIP-INS

1. LSU has recorded at least 11 steals in six of its last seven games and ranks seventh in the country with an SEC-best 10 per game.

2. After shooting 30.9 percent and averaging 6.1 triples in their first seven games, the Crimson Tide are converting 39 percent beyond the arc and averaging 8.3 3-pointers since.

3. The Tigers have shot 60 percent or worse from the foul line in each of the last two contests after converting 75.4 percent of their free throws over their first 11 games.

PREDICTION: LSU 77, Alabama 73

Mississippi State Bulldogs vs. South Carolina Gamecocks Preview and Predictions 2019-01-08

NCAAB Predictions 7th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/07/2019

No. 14 Mississippi State aims for its 10th consecutive victory when it opens SEC play against host South Carolina on Tuesday. The Bulldogs, who have climbed to their highest ranking since 2011, have won the last two meetings and three of the past five.

After posting a 71-69 win at Florida to begin their SEC schedule, the Gamecocks play their next two contests at home with a chance for an unexpected hot start to the conference slate following a disappointing non-conference performance. It was the second straight win following a four-game skid for South Carolina, but two of those losses came against top-five teams, and coach Frank Martin's squads are never an easy matchup. "They're just really physical. They play really hard," Bulldogs coach Ben Howland told reporters. "They really embody (Martin) in terms of the toughness and the fight that they bring. They're really tough defensively. They're always one of the best defensive teams in the country, year in and year out. It's always tough to score on that team." Howland would like to see his squad show that same mentality, saying the Bulldogs have to improve defensively going into SEC play - especially in the perimeter.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPNU

ABOUT MISSISSIPPI STATE (12-1): While Howland is disappointed with his team's performance at the defensive end, the Bulldogs have excelled on offense. Five players average double figures in scoring, with guards Quinndary Weatherspoon (17.2 points, 5.2 rebounds) and Lamar Peters (13.2, 6.2 assists) leading the way. Aric Holman (12.5 points, 8.6 rebounds) is a force in the post but also can step out and shoot 3-pointers.

ABOUT SOUTH CAROLINA (6-7, 1-0 SEC): The Gamecocks are the opposite of the Bulldogs in that they rely on their defense to make up for some offensive deficiencies. Freshman guard A.J. Lawson (13.2 points) leads the team in scoring, but its most important player is Chris Silva (12.9, 6.7 rebounds), who has scored in double figures in six consecutive games - averaging 16.2 points and 7.8 rebounds during the stretch. Hassani Gravett (10.8 points) has improved as an outside shooting threat and scored 22 points against Florida.

TIP-INS

1. The Bulldogs are 20-2 over the last two seasons and have won 12 straight when Weatherspoon scores 20 or more points.

2. Silva has gone to the free-throw line at least eight times in three straight games and is 16-of-17 over his last two contests.

3. Mississippi State is 27-1 under Howland when allowing 60 points or fewer.

Purdue Boilermakers vs. Michigan St Spartans Preview and Predictions 2019-01-08

NCAAB Predictions 7th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/07/2019

Michigan State looks to extend its winning streak to nine when it hosts Purdue in a Big Ten Conference contest Tuesday night. The No. 5 Spartans are coming off a road win over No. 17 Ohio State on Saturday, while the Boilermakers earned their third straight victory with an 86-70 decision over No. 25 Iowa on Thursday.

Junior guard Carsen Edwards is one of the most dangerous scorers in the country, ranking fourth with 25.5 points per game while shooting 39.3 percent from 3-point range. Senior guard Ryan Cline is the only other double-figure scorer for coach Matt Painter, averaging 12.6 points and dishing out a team-high 3.6 assists, and Edwards and Cline are Painter's workhorses, with each averaging better than 32 minutes of playing time. Junior forward Nick Ward is coming off a Big Ten Player of the Week award for the Spartans and is second on the team in scoring at 16.7 points on 66.2 percent shooting from the floor. Michigan State coach Tom Izzo has potentially the best point guard in the country in junior Cassius Winston, who tops the team in scoring at 17.7 points while leading the Big Ten in assists per game (7.6).

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN2

ABOUT PURDUE (9-5, 2-1 Big Ten): After the departure of Isaac Haas from last season's team, the thought was that 7-3 sophomore Matt Haarms would step right into the role of scoring big man for the Boilermakers. But Haarms has struggled a bit at times, leading Painter to move him to a reserve role over the last three contests, and Haarms has started to flourish coming off the bench like he did in his first season with Purdue. After scoring more than 10 points once in his 11 starts, Haarms has eclipsed that mark twice in his three games as a reserve, including a 14-point effort in 15 minutes against Iowa.

ABOUT MICHIGAN STATE (13-2, 4-0): With junior guard Joshua Langford sidelined with an ankle injury, Kyle Ahrens has moved into the starting lineup for Izzo, which leaves reserve moments on the wing, and freshman Aaron Henry has been getting them. The 6-6 forward played 19 minutes off the bench against Northwestern two games ago, scoring four points, grabbing five rebounds and dishing out a career-best four assists. The athletic Henry played 14 minutes against Ohio State, including key stretches late in the second half as the Spartans pulled away, providing some of the rebounding and on-the-ball defense that Langford usually provides, and likely earning more time from Izzo as long as Langford is out.

TIP-INS

1. The Boilermakers lead the Big Ten in 3-pointers made per game with 10.7, while the Spartans are No. 2 at 8.9 per contest.

2. Michigan State is ninth in the country, averaging 87.1 points, and is second in the nation in assists per game with 21.3.

3. Sophomore forward Xavier Tillman brings defensive intensity off the bench for the Spartans, leading the team in blocks (26) and steals (16).

PREDICTION: Michigan State 83, Purdue 72

North Carolina Tar Heels vs. NC State Wolfpack Preview and Predictions 2019-01-08

NCAAB Predictions 7th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/07/2019

No. 16 North Carolina State is off to its best start in 45 years and can validate that one more time when it hosts 12th-ranked North Carolina on Tuesday night for an early-season ACC showdown. The Wolfpack boast a victory over 10th-ranked Auburn and rallied from a 10-point deficit for an 87-82 triumph at Miami (Fla.) in the ACC opener Thursday to match the start of their 1973-74 NCAA championship team (13-1).

"Definitely a game to build on," N.C. State junior point guard Markell Johnson told reporters after scoring 20 points in 23 minutes Thursday. "Being down 10 on the road to come back and win is big. We feel like we can come back from anything." The Wolfpack, who have won seven straight, entered the week second in the nation in field goal shooting percentage (52.1) and will face perhaps their toughest test when they take on a North Carolina team which held Pittsburgh to 30.6 percent from the floor Saturday while winning its league opener 85-60 on the road. "I just think we locked down on defense," Tar Heels freshman guard Coby White told reporters. "We got out in transition and we ran our sets and we just played harder and with a lot of effort." North Carolina coach Roy Williams said he liked his team's poise on the road against Pitt and the Tar Heels will need the same type of effort to earn their fourth straight victory after losing three times in a six-game span.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA (11-3, 1-0 ACC): Senior guard Cameron Johnson has led a balanced offense, averaging 16.3 points on 52.3 percent shooting from the field and 48.6 from 3-point range - including 15-of-27 from behind the arc the last five games. "I just feel like I'm a little better overall physically, a little more fine-tuned," Johnson told reporters. "As I keep getting older, I keep getting a little better and more experienced, so I feel like that's all added up for me." White (14.4) is tied for second on the team in scoring after recording 22 versus Pitt and senior forward Luke Maye (14.4 points, team-high 9.9 rebounds) has two double-doubles in the last three games.

ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA STATE (13-1, 1-0): Johnson stepped up by draining 6-of-8 shots and dishing out five assists in the win against Miami and coach Kevin Keatts told reporters of the effort: "He made some big shots. I thought he played like a veteran guard in the league." Senior guard Torin Dorn was just 3-of-9 from the field last time out, but leads the team in scoring (14.5) and rebounding (6.5) while shooting 52.6 percent from the field overall. Junior guard C.J. Bryce has contributed 11.2 points per contest and sophomore guard Devon Daniels (10.5), a transfer from Utah, scored 19 versus Miami and is averaging 14 over the last four games.

TIP-INS

1. North Carolina senior G Kenny Williams (team-best 4.2 assists) is shooting just 37.6 percent from the field after finishing last season at 48.6.

2. N.C. State sophomore G Blake Harris sat out Thursday's win with a hip pointer and his status is uncertain.

3. The Tar Heels have won five of the last six meetings overall and five straight against the Wolfpack in Raleigh, N.C.

West Virginia Mountaineers vs. Kansas State Wildcats Preview and Predictions 2019-01-09

NCAAB Predictions 8th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/08/2019

Both West Virginia and Kansas State were expected to contend in the Big 12, but injuries and ineffectiveness have made for a difficult ride thus far. Both teams will be trying for their first conference win when the Mountaineers visit Kansas State on Wednesday.

West Virginia had three losses to non-power conference teams during its pre-Big 12 slate and then opened league play with setbacks to No. 8 Texas Tech at home and then at Texas on Saturday. "I thought our effort was OK," Mountaineers coach Bob Huggins - who elected to start walk-on Taevon Horton in a symbolic gesture aimed at rewarding players he sees giving effort - told reporters. "We had some breakdowns." The Wildcats lost to the same two teams from the Lone Star State, most recently dropping a 63-57 decision at Texas Tech on Saturday. West Virginia entered Tuesday ninth in the 10-team league in shooting (42.4 percent), while Kansas State was last (42.0).

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPNU

ABOUT WEST VIRGINIA (8-6, 0-2 Big 12): The Mountaineers have played without star forward Sagaba Konate (knee) for the last five games and there is uncertainty surrounding the junior's future, as family gets involved in the decision-making as it pertains to the injury. "It's not my decision," Huggins told the media after the loss in Texas. "It's he and his family and he's 21-years old, so he should be able to make those kinds of decisions for himself. It's a family situation and they have to do what they think is right. At the same time, we can't sit here and wish him back. We can't sit here and cry, 'Oh, woe is me,' because he isn't here. We've got to figure out a way to win." Freshman Derek Culver, who was suspended for the first 10 games, has helped to fill the void and is averaging 13.3 points and 9.3 rebounds over his last three games.

ABOUT KANSAS STATE (10-4, 0-2): Already without preseason Big 12 Player of the Year Dean Wade (foot), the Wildcats lost Kamau Stokes (10.8 points per game) for one game due to a foot injury of his own, but the senior guard was able to return for Saturday's tilt and scored seven points in 21 minutes. Barry Brown Jr., another senior guard, had 16 points and leads the team in scoring (13.6) and steals (1.8). Behind Brown, Wade and Stokes, junior forward Xavier Sneed is the team's fourth player averaging in double figures on the scoreboard (10.7), but he was held to four points on 1-of-8 from the floor at Texas Tech and is shooting 27.7 percent over his last five games.

TIP-INS

1. West Virginia has won nine of the last 10 meetings, including an 89-51 rout at home in the most recent encounter last February.

2. Wildcats F Makol Mawien recorded his first career double-double in the loss to Texas Tech with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

3. Mountaineers F Esa Ahmad averaged 14.3 points in non-conference play but has just 16 points on 4-of-12 shooting through the two Big 12 losses.

PREDICTION: Kansas State 65, West Virginia 60

It’s still fresh in my mind the effectiveness of the Longhorn football team during the recent bowl season, so, that just might have pointed this handicapper to the right spot on the CBB schedule for Tuesday. Clearly, Texas has an edge in SOS and available talent with a 10-4 mark, while struggling offensive unit Okie State tries to improve on their 6-8 early season run. In addition, we can’t help noting the home unit is 0-8 ATS L8 times out, 0-6 ATS versus talented units with over a .600 mark, 0-5 ATS record off a SU loss. For our money the Longhorns are the play. Good Luck.

My money is on the Cyclones to easily cash in a win and cover here at Baylor in Tuesday's Big 12 action. Iowa State is finally getting some respect as they are No. 20 after their 17-point blowout win at home over Kansas. I just don't see this team suffering a letdown against a very mediocre team like Baylor. The Bears just don't have the offensive fire-power to keep pace and I don't see the defense stopping this high-powered ISU offense. Bet the Cyclones -2.5!

The Wizards have been playing great since John Wall was put on the shelf for the season. They seem to get along better without him, and it helps that they got Otto Porter Jr. back from injury just as Wall went out. The Wizards are 3-1 SU & 4-0 ATS in their last four games overall with their only loss coming on the road by 6 at Miami as 6.5-point dogs. They also went on the road and won by 18 at Oklahoma City as 10-point dogs. And now they are catching a big number here against the 76ers tonight. It’s a 76ers team that is battling illness as both Ben Simmons and Jimmy Butler are sick, though both are expected to play tonight. Either way it’s too many points. The 76ers are 2-11 ATS off two or more consecutive wins this season. Give me the Wizards.

However, now they come back home for a quick back to back with travel involved. They face a Dallas team hell-bent on revenge as recent trips to St Louis have not gone well for the Stars. It is the perfect spot for payback too because Dallas is rested and played much better in their loss at Winnipeg Sunday than what the final score would indicate. Also, prior to the loss to the Jets, the Stars had won 4 of their 5 prior games. The Blues are an ugly 2-7 in home games with a posted total of 5.5 goals this season. Also, St Louis is 0-4 this season when playing the 2nd game of a back to back. The Blues are just 3-9 this season after winning a game by a multiple goal margin. Look for St Louis to drop to 0-3 this season when off a shutout win. The Stars improve to 9-4 on the season when off a loss by a multiple goal margin. This is no mistake by the odds makers. Alabama comes into this game off a 77-75 upset (+5) win at home over Kentucky in their conference opener. With that the Crimson Tide have won and covered 5 straight. Most would be happy to grab the 6-points, but I think there's a ton of value here with LSU.
This an absolutely brutal spot for Alabama, playing on the road just three days after putting everything they had into beating Kentucky. Making it even harder is that LSU will be out for blood, as the Tigers have lost 5 straight to the Crimson Tide.
I'm confident Alabama won't make it 6 in a row. LSU is a perfect 8-0 at home this season and are going to be jacked up with this being their conference opener and first game since Dec. 28th. Tigers should win here by double-digits easy.
Alabama is a mere 13-28 ATS last 41 when they come into a contest having won 5 or more games in a row and are 36-60 ATS last 96 as a road dog of 6 points or less. Take LSU!

These two played a high scoring game in Raleigh last year. I think we see plenty of points on Tuesday night with Luke Maye, Coby White and Cameron Johnson leading the way for UNC while Torin Dorn and Braxton Beverly playing well for the Wolfpack.

Play on: Kings -2½ -103 at pinnacle

Jack’s Free Pick Tuesday: Sacramento Kings -2.5
I realize the Sacramento Kings will be playing the 2nd of a back-to-back tonight after beating the Magic 111-95 last night. But they won’t be fatigued at all considering that game was decided by the 4th quarter and they were able to rest starters. Only one player played more than 26 minutes for the Kings last night.
The Kings should have no problem handling a Phoenix Suns team that has the worst record in the Western Conference at 9-32 this season. And the Suns are not playing well at all of late, going 0-6 SU & 1-5 ATS in their last six games overall despite playing all six games at home. They simply have zero home-court advantage this season.
The Kings already won 122-105 in Phoenix earlier this season as 5.5-point favorites, and now they are only 2.5-point favorites, which is an adjustment that is unwarranted. Especially when you consider that Devin Booker left last game with a back injury early and is questionable to play tonight. Without Booker, the Suns have zero shot, and even with him I don’t give them much of a chance tonight.
The Kings are 7-0 ATS in their last seven games vs. a team with a winning % below .400. The Suns are 7-18-1 ATS in their last 26 home games vs. a team with a losing road record. Bet the Kings Tuesday.

NBA | Knicks vs Warriors
Play on: Knicks +17 -106 at pinnacle

We think the Warriors will barely care about this game. When we see a line this big we will almost always take the points. The Warriors have played their last 11 games against Western Conference opponents. They have faced the likes of the Rockets, Blazers, Jazz, Clippers and Lakers. They had their big loss to the Rockets then had their bounce-back game against the Kings. We think that they will be sleepwalking during this one, and even if it’s a blowout we can still cover when catching this many points. The Knicks are a very bad team. But they have slight momentum with a win over the Lakers the other night and they have covered three straight after losing in Portland Monday but covering the number. Playing well against the world champs can be a season highlight for a bad team, and this will be their last chance after an early-season home blowout loss to Golden State in October. We think they will play as well as they can and that Golden State won’t care much and will probably win this one by between 10-15 without really trying too hard.

Dave’s Tuesday Free Play:
1* on Los Angeles Clippers -6.5
The Key: The Clippers are 6-3 SU & 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games overall. They are healthy and playing some great basketball as 5 of their 6 wins have come by 9 points or more. The Hornets are not healthy with Cody Zeller out and Jeremy Lamb questionable. They lost to the Mavs by 38 at home and to the Nuggets by 13 on the road in their first two games since these injuries. And they won 119-113 at Phoenix, but Devin Booker was knocked out early in that game with a back injury. The Hornets won’t be competitive on the road here against a team the caliber of the Clippers, who are 13-6 SU & 12-7 ATS at home this year. The Hornets are 5-12 SU on the road. Charlotte is also a tired team, and the Hornets are 2-19 ATS when playing 8 or more games in 14 days over the last 2 seasons. The Clippers are 12-5 ATS in the last 17 meetings, including 6-2 ATS in the last 8 meetings in LA. Take Los Angeles.

10* FREE NBA PICK (Clippers -6.5)
I'll take my chances here with Los Angeles covering the 6.5-point spread at home against the Hornets. Charlotte is a mere 5-12 on the road this season and I just haven't been impressed at all with this team. They are down big man Cody Zeller and have really struggled without him. They come in off a road win, which looks nice, but it was against the Suns and they let Phoenix shoot 52% from the field. Prior to that they lost by double-digits at Denver and by 38 at home to the Mavs. Clippers are 6-3 SU and 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games. This team continues to fly under the radar and I just don't think it's asking a lot for LA to win here by 7 or more points. Keep in mind the Hornets were at Denver on Saturday, Phoenix on Sunday and now in Los Angeles. Hard to imagine they aren't dealing with some jet lag and tired legs. Give me the Clippers -6.5!

This game features the 11-3 North Carolina and the 13-1 NC State. As per usual all the focus goes on the young and talented visiting Tar Heels but this NC State team is red hot winners of 7 straight games and are lead by some great veteran players that have the experience the Tar Heels don't have. Big rival game and I can not see NC State losing at home. Take NC State for a 10* winner.
