The Walker Group Picks

# 7 MR JOSHUA 3/1

# 8 FRENCH QUARTER 12/1

# 5 STORMING MY WAY 6/1

MR JOSHUA looks to be a very good contender. Recent figs for the jock - 25 win percent - make this gelding stand out in this group. He looks solid in this slot and I expect will be on the front end or close at the midpoint. Must be carefully examined based on the very strong Equibase speed fig posted in the last competition. FRENCH QUARTER - Must be considered as he drops to compete against this softer field. STORMING MY WAY - Put up a strong speed fig in the most recent race. Can run another good one in this contest. Could best this field here, showing quite good figs of late.

#1 WHATELSE IGOT TODO (ML=7/2)

WHATELSE IGOT TODO - A big drop down in class figure points from his November 14th race at Churchill Downs. Based on that key piece of info, I will give this horse the edge. You have to expect a better performance out of this gelding in today's event. He put in a good effort on the backstretch on Nov 14th only to run evenly in the stretch drive. Morales and Shirer partnered with one another are a horse gambler's friend. Gelding was in versus 'open company' on November 14th and should find this group easier to deal with.

Vulnerable Contenders: #9 TIZ NEYNEY AND RAD (ML=4/1), #8 SOUTHERN SWAGG (ML=9/2), #10 ARCTIC DYNAFLOW (ML=5/1),

TIZ NEYNEY AND RAD - Doesn't appear to be in a cozy situation this time around. SOUTHERN SWAGG - This steed didn't go to the head of the pack and didn't close in the stretch last time he ran. The Brain always warns me to keep away from horses in sprint contests that haven't finished in the money in sprint contests lately. ARCTIC DYNAFLOW - Doubtful that the speed figure he recorded on November 24th will hold up in this race.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - WHATELSE IGOT TODO - This gelding has the top speed figure last race with a very good 74. He is the top wager here.

#2 GENERAL MACH FOUR (ML=5/2)

GENERAL MACH FOUR - All systems look good for this gelding. Last workout, 2nd fastest of the day, shows he's fit and ready. I really like sprinters that make a fast turnaround. Looking at today's Equibase class figure, this thoroughbred is up against an easier group than last time around the track at Golden Gate Fields. This gelding is in fine form, having run a strong race on Dec 31st, finishing first.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 RIVZINTHEHOUSE (ML=1/1), #5 OMACHE KID (ML=4/1), #7 JOEJOE'S KINGDOM (ML=6/1),

RIVZINTHEHOUSE - In any event of 5 furlongs, I like to support a contender that has been looking good in short distance events lately. OMACHE KID - This horse hasn't shown very much in the last couple of affairs. Don't believe this less than sharp equine will make a winning move in today's race. That last fig was mediocre when compared with today's class rating. JOEJOE'S KINGDOM - This horse ran a mediocre speed fig last time out. He shouldn't show signs of improvement and will probably get beat in today's event running that rating.

# 5 ZEPHYR TRAIN 1/1

# 6 VALLEY CAL 8/1

# 4 PHANTOM SPOT 7/5

ZEPHYR TRAIN looks to be a formidable contender. Ought to be given a chance here on the basis of the numbers in the speed department alone. With a formidable 64 Equibase Speed Fig last time out, will clearly be a factor in this affair. He looks decent in this spot and I expect will be on the lead or close at the halfway point. VALLEY CAL - Have to bet on this gelding with the sound earnings per start in dirt sprint races. PHANTOM SPOT - Posted a very good Equibase Speed Figure last time out.

Milwaukee Bucks vs. Washington Wizards Preview and Predictions 2019-01-11

Bucks vs. Wizards Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 01/10/2019

The Milwaukee Bucks just finished taking out one of the hottest teams in the NBA as superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo got the better of Houston's James Harden in a battle of MVP candidates. The Bucks will try to avoid a letdown when they make the second stop of a three-game trip by visiting the Washington Wizards on Friday.

Harden scored 42 points on Wednesday but Antetokounmpo collected 27 points, a career-high 21 rebounds and five assists while leading Milwaukee to a 116-109 victory. "I definitely think it's our belief inside this locker room, and a lot just around the league, that we have the best player in the league right here," Bucks center Brook Lopez told reporters of Antetokounmpo. "He does it in so many ways. He makes so many of his players better. He's all over the court constantly. It's so impressive to watch every night." The Wizards are trying to make their way back into the playoff picture in the East behind their own All-Star, shooting guard Bradley Beal, who guided the team to wins in four of the last six games. "We're playing well, but we have a lot to make up," Washington coach Scott Brooks told reporters. "We're so far behind. We just want to put ourselves in position to one day get to .500."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Wisconsin (Milwaukee), NBCS Washington

ABOUT THE BUCKS (29-11): Milwaukee owns the fewest losses in the NBA thanks in large part to Antetokounmpo, who is Harden's closest challenger in the race for the MVP award halfway through the season. "To be honest with you, all I care about right now is getting better, helping my team win," Antetokounmpo told reporters. "And (becoming MVP is) going to take care of itself. I know that one day it might happen. I don't know if I'm there yet, but I'm going to do whatever it takes to get there, because that's what I want to be." Antetokounmpo is averaging 26.6 points on 58.1 percent shooting, 12.8 rebounds and six assists.

ABOUT THE WIZARDS (17-25): Beal is leading the team in the absence of point guard John Wall (heel) and scored 34 points in Wednesday's 123-106 home win over the Philadelphia 76ers. "It's just extra effort," Beal told reporters of the team's improved play of late. ... It's kind of that mentality of don't let it be. Don't be that guy that is relaxing on defense. Don't be that guy that is getting beat." Beal is getting some help off the bench of late from forward Otto Porter Jr., who is averaging 15.4 points in five games since returning from a knee injury.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Bucks G Malcolm Brogdon averaged 22.5 points on 17-of-26 shooting over the last two games.

2. Washington SF Trevor Ariza scored 17 points on Wednesday after totaling six points on 2-of-16 shooting in the previous two contests.

3. The road team took each of the last five in the series.

PREDICTION: Bucks 119, Wizards 108

Atlanta Hawks vs. Philadelphia 76ers Preview and Predictions 2019-01-11

NBA Predictions 10th January 2019 by Gracenote
Hawks vs. 76ers Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 01/10/2019

The Philadelphia 76ers have played 27 games since acquiring Jimmy Butler from Minnesota in November, and the effort to fit him into an offense featuring Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons continues heading into Friday's home game against the Atlanta Hawks. The 76ers are 18-9 since trading for Butler but not all is harmonious in the City of Brotherly Love, as Butler reportedly has criticized coach Brett Brown's usage of him in the offense.

Nights like Wednesday - when Philadelphia's four-game winning streak ended with a 123-106 loss at Washington, a game the 76ers trailed by 26 points in the third quarter - do not help, even though Embiid (35 points), Butler (23) and Simmons (15) combined for 68.9 percent of the offensive output. "I think that was just lack of competitiveness," Simmons told reporters afterward. "I don't think we competed." As for Atlanta, the rebuilding Hawks went 5-1 during an impressive late December stretch, but are 1-5 since after Wednesday's 116-100 defeat at Brooklyn. "A lot of energy, a lot of movement, a lot of pace, attacking downhill, and then we just ran out of gas," Atlanta coach Lloyd Pierce said after a game in which the Hawks led by 15 points after one quarter then fell flat on the second night of a back-to-back.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Southeast (Atlanta), NBCS Philadelphia

ABOUT THE HAWKS (12-29): John Collins continues his campaign for All-Star consideration, scoring 30 points with 14 rebounds Wednesday for his 16th double-double of the season and raising his team-leading averages to 18.8 points and 10.6 rebounds. Rookie guards Trae Young and Kevin Huerter have found a rhythm offensively, Young averaging 15.9 points and 7.6 assists in his past nine games and Huerter reaching double-figures scoring in his past four games. Atlanta concludes a stretch of six road contests in seven games Friday; the Hawks are 5-19 away from home this season.

ABOUT THE 76ERS (27-15): Butler has averaged 18.3 points in 23 games since joining Philadelphia, averaging 13.9 shots per game on a team where Embiid averages 18.2 shots per contest and Simmons 11.5. Embiid ranks third in the NBA in rebounding at 13.5 per game and seventh in scoring at 26.9, while Simmons is shooting 57.1 percent from the field. Philadelphia has struggled at times defensively, sitting 22nd in the league in scoring defense (112.5).

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The 76ers are third in the NBA in assists (27 per game), fourth in rebounding (47.5) and sixth in scoring (114.6).

2. Philadelphia SG J.J. Redick missed his second game in a row with lower back tightness, but the 76ers are optimistic he could return as early as Friday.

3. Simmons scored 21 points to lift Philadelphia to a 113-92 home victory over Atlanta on Oct. 29, the 76ers' fourth consecutive triumph over the Hawks.

PREDICTION: 76ers 123, Hawks 99

Indiana Pacers vs. New York Knicks Preview and Predictions 2019-01-11

NBA Predictions 10th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/10/2019

The New York Knicks managed one win on their six-game road trip, which is one more than they posted in their last six home games. The Knicks will try to win at Madison Square Garden for the first time since Dec. 1 when the host the Indiana Pacers on Friday.

New York snapped an eight-game slide with a 119-112 win at the Los Angeles Lakers last Friday but dropped the final two stops of the six-game West Coast trip and lost 15 of the last 17 games overall. "We've got a long way to go," Knicks coach David Fizdale told reporters after finishing the road trip with a 122-95 loss at Golden State on Tuesday. "We've got a lot of work to do. We've got to learn to play complete games. Hopefully, over the second half of the season, which I expect us to continue to get better. I expect the second half for the young guys to be a little more familiar and hopefully we're going to get a little more trust between us." The Pacers are coming to the end of a five-game road trip and fell to 2-2 on the excursion after getting blasted 135-108 by the Boston Celtics on Wednesday. "It just looked like we were gassed tonight," Pacers coach Nate McMillan told reporters. "We didn't win a quarter. We knew they would come out fast, and they did. Came out very aggressive, attacking us. We weren't able to establish anything defensively against this group."

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, FS Indiana

ABOUT THE PACERS (27-14): Indiana knocked off sub-500 foes Chicago and Cleveland on the trip but fell to East contenders Toronto and Boston, and the latest loss did not sit well with star guard Victor Oladipo. "They just beat us in every category today," Oladipo told reporters. "Everything you can imagine, they beat us in, so. Got to go back to the drawing board. One of those games where they do what they need to do. They came in and dominated us. Credit them. They played well." Oladipo scored 36 points at Chicago to begin the trip but was held to 17 or fewer in each of the last three contests.

ABOUT THE KNICKS (10-31): New York is in full rebuilding mode and is shuffling veterans to the end of the rotation, opening up more minutes for rookies like small forward Kevin Knox. The 19-year-old Kentucky product shot 33.3 percent from the floor on the road trip but drew praise from Warriors superstar Kevin Durant. "I got a chance to watch a lot of the young guys in the league so far and he's one of the guys having a good year," Durant told reporters of Knox. "He was injured at the start of the season and he's coming back. Coach put him in the starting lineup and (he is) playing some great minutes. He's really starting to get a feel for the game. He has a bright future ahead of him."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Knicks are reportedly fielding trade offers for veteran C Enes Kanter, with the Sacramento Kings emerging as a possibility.

2. Pacers C Myles Turner (shoulder) sat out the last three games and is day-to-day.

3. Indiana took the first two meetings this season, including a 107-101 victory at New York on Oct. 31.

Brooklyn Nets vs. Toronto Raptors Preview and Predictions 2019-01-11

NBA Predictions 10th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/10/2019

Kawhi Leonard attempts to run his career-best streak of 20-point games to 18 when the Toronto Raptors host the Brooklyn Nets on Friday. Leonard is averaging 30.2 points during the stretch and is closing in on the franchise record 23-game streak Vince Carter recorded in 2001.

The Raptors are looking for their seventh straight home victory against the Nets and they bring a three-game winning streak into the contest after recording a 104-101 win over the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday. Leonard scored 31 points in the contest to improve Toronto's home mark to 17-14 as the club battles the Milwaukee Bucks for the top spot in the Eastern Conference. Brooklyn also defeated the Hawks in its last game, producing a 116-100 home win that leaves the streaking Nets with four wins in five games and 13 in their past 17. Guard D'Angelo Russell scored 23 points and has topped 20 in five of his last six appearances and is averaging 22.3 during the stretch.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, YES (Brooklyn), Sportsnet One (Toronto)

ABOUT THE NETS (21-22): Brooklyn trailed by 15 points after the opening quarter against the Hawks before outscoring Atlanta by 31 points over the final three quarter to easily win the contest. "Guys just vocalized that we needed to pick up the energy, just compete harder," Nets forward Joe Harris told reporters. "That's all it really boiled down to. It had nothing to do with Xs and Os, making shots, anything like that. It was just competing harder and we did a better job to help us in the defensive end in the second quarter." Backup power forward Ed Davis collected a season-best 16 rebounds off the bench for his 17th double-digit effort on the boards this season.

ABOUT THE RAPTORS (31-12): Toronto matched a franchise-record with 18 steals against the Hawks with Leonard (six) and point guard Kyle Lowry (four) each recording a season high in the category. Lowry scored 16 points in the contest, which marked the first time since Dec. 9 that he and Leonard played in the same contest. Lowry has played in back-to-back games after missing 10 of the previous 11 games due to back and hip injuries and Leonard was held out for rest when Lowry returned against the Indiana Pacers on Sunday.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Nets halted a 12-game losing streak against the Raptors by recording a 106-105 overtime home victory on Dec. 7.

2. Toronto is on the verge of signing G Patrick McCaw and it is unknown if he will be available against the Nets.

3. Brooklyn SF Jared Dudley (hamstring) is doubtful after being injured against the Hawks.

PREDICTION: Raptors 116, Nets 107

Dallas Mavericks vs. Minnesota Timberwolves Preview and Predictions 2019-01-11

NBA Predictions 10th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/10/2019

Ryan Saunders won his first game as Minnesota interim coach and looks to post another triumph when the Timberwolves host the Dallas Mavericks on Friday. The 32-year-old Saunders was promoted to the top seat on the bench when the organization fired Tom Thibodeau on Sunday.

Minnesota has won three straight contests and six of its last nine and Saunders - the son of former Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders - liked what he witnessed from his team in the 119-117 road win against the Oklahoma City Thunder. "It's unbelievable how they stayed connected throughout the whole game," Saunders told reporters. "Down the stretch, there were so many times where we could have disbanded and then the crowd could have got into us. I can't say enough about that team." Dallas posted a 104-94 victory over the visiting Phoenix Suns on Wednesday and is three games below .500 at the midway point of its schedule. "We can be a lot better," center DeAndre Jordan told reporters afterward. "I'm definitely not satisfied and happy with where we are right now - we want to be better and that's not a negative thing. That's just real. We want to be better, we know we're better."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FS Southwest (Dallas), FS North (Minnesota)

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (19-22): Rookie forward Luka Doncic reached the 30-point mark for the fourth time this season in the win over the Suns and he was solid all-around with 30 points, six rebounds, five assists, four 3-pointers and three steals. "Luka does crazy stuff all the time," Jordan told reporters after the club won for just the fourth time in 15 games. "So I'm not surprised by anything he does." Forward Harrison Barnes had 17 points against Phoenix thanks to hitting all 10 of his free-throw attempts but he was just 3-of-11 from the field and is 8-of-33 over the past three contests.

ABOUT THE TIMBERWOLVES (20-21): The players felt the environment was improved during Saunders' first game in place of stern taskmaster Thibodeau. "He fed off our energy, and we fed off his energy," Minnesota power forward Taj Gibson told reporters. "We were just trying to get a win for him." Small forward Andrew Wiggins certainly responded with season highs of 40 points and 10 rebounds for his sixth career double-double and he is averaging 27 points over the past five games.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Mavericks posted a 140-136 home win on Oct. 20 to snap a five-game losing streak against the Timberwolves.

2. Minnesota PF Derrick Rose (ankle) is expected to play Friday after missing six straight games.

3. Dallas PG Dennis Smith Jr. (back) and F Dirk Nowitzki (illness) could return after one-game absences.

Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Houston Rockets Preview and Predictions 2019-01-11

NBA Predictions 10th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/10/2019

The Houston Rockets are cooling off a bit with losses in two of their last three games after falling 116-109 to the East-leading Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday. James Harden will try to drag his team back into the win column when the Rockets take a step down in Eastern Conference foes while hosting the NBA-worst Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday.

Harden went head-to-head with his closest competitor in the NBA MVP race on Wednesday and posted his 14th straight game with 30 or more points by scoring 42 on 13-of-30 shooting, but Giannis Antetokounmpo ended up with the win. "We've just got to keep fighting," Harden told reporters. "That's what it's about. It's the grind. We've been playing some really good teams and you've just got to continue to fight. We're down a couple players, but that's no excuse." The Cavaliers scored 38 points in the first quarter on Wednesday but still couldn't avoid an 11th consecutive setback while falling 140-124 at the New Orleans Pelicans in the opener of a six-game trip. "We just have to buckle down and try to put four solid quarters together, which we haven't been able to do," Cleveland coach Larry Drew told reporters. "We just have to continue working on it."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FS Ohio (Cleveland), AT&T SportsNet Southwest (Houston)

ABOUT THE CAVALIERS (8-34): Cleveland allowed New Orleans to shoot 54.8 percent from the floor in its most recent loss but can take away some positives offensively after knocking down 14 3-pointers and placing seven scorers in double figures. The Cavaliers did not get much out of rookie point guard Collin Sexton (13 points on 2-of-12 shooting) but placed a pair of reserve point guards in double figures as Matthew Dellavedova and Cameron Payne combined for 33 points on 12-of-16 shooting. Those two were joined by reserve guard Jordan Clarkson, who scored a team-high 21 points in his third straight 20-plus performance.

ABOUT THE ROCKETS (23-17): Houston let the game slip away while getting outscored 38-23 in the third quarter but is taking some positives from Wednesday's setback. "These games are probably more important than the ones we win, just because these teams are feisty and scrappy, and they come in here and try to get a big road win," Harden told reporters. "We've got to lock back in, watch some film (Thursday), prepare, get ready for Cleveland." The Rockets shot 37.6 percent from the floor against the Bucks as center Clint Capela endured a rare tough shooting night, going 4-of-16 from the floor.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Cavaliers PF Larry Nance Jr. (knee) missed Wednesday game and is questionable for Friday.

2. Rockets SG Eric Gordon (knee) sat out the last five contests and is not expected to play Friday.

3. Cleveland knocked off Houston 117-108 at home on Nov. 24 as Sexton scored 29 points on 14-of-21 shooting.

PREDICTION: Rockets 128, Cavaliers 110

Los Angeles Lakers vs. Utah Jazz Preview and Predictions 2019-01-11

NBA Predictions 10th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/10/2019

The Utah Jazz look to post their seventh consecutive home victory over Los Angeles when they host the Lakers on Friday. Los Angeles will again be without forward LeBron James, who will miss his ninth consecutive game due to a groin injury.

The Lakers are 3-5 without James and the club announced Thursday that he will miss at least three more games prior to the next scheduled evaluation on Wednesday. Los Angeles has prevailed in its last two outings, notching double-digit victories against the Dallas Mavericks and Detroit Pistons. Utah recovered from a 21-point deficit to record a 106-93 home win over the Orlando Magic on Wednesday as star guard Donovan Mitchell was superb with 33 points and seven assists. "My biggest thing is not to change the mindset, just because we're down two point guards," Mitchell told reporters after the game, referencing injuries to Ricky Rubio (hamstring) and Dante Exum (ankle). "Just being aggressive and making the right reads. That's what I've been doing and that's what I'm going to continue to do."

TV: 10 p.m. ET, ESPN, Spectrum SportsNet (Los Angeles), AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain (Utah)

ABOUT THE LAKERS (23-19): Forward Kyle Kuzma scored a career-best 41 points in Wednesday's 113-100 victory over the Detroit Pistons and knocked down 16-of-24 attempts. "I know I'm a great shooter," Kuzma told reporters afterward. "My percentage may not reflect that, but I'm always confident shooting, and I'm always in the gym just trying to put work in every single day. It paid off (Wednesday)." His performance was certainly substantially better than Monday's win against the Mavericks when he was 4-of-20 shooting while scoring 13 points.

ABOUT THE JAZZ (21-21): Utah outscored Orlando 60-30 in the second half of Thursday's win and coach Quin Snyder was impressed with his club's unselfish play over the final 24 minutes. "We passed the ball. That's who we are," Snyder told reporters afterward. "If we start playing to not make mistakes and the ball stops moving, we'll struggle offensively. It's paramount for us to have the movement and have the passing." Point guard Raul Neto made his first start of the season with Rubio out and scored 10 points for the second straight game - the first coming on Monday against Milwaukee when Rubio departed before the game was five minutes old.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Lakers recorded a 90-83 home triumph on Nov. 23 for just their second victory in the past 13 meetings with the Jazz.

2. Utah SF Joe Ingles was 4-of-8 from 3-point range against Orlando after being just 4-of-22 over the previous six games.

3. Los Angeles PG Lonzo Ball has scored five or fewer points in three of the past five games and has 21 and 17 in the other two.

PREDICTION: Jazz 112, Lakers 104

Charlotte Hornets vs. Portland Trail Blazers Preview and Predictions 2019-01-11

NBA Predictions 10th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/10/2019

The Portland Trail Blazers look to record their 11th straight home win over Charlotte when they host the Hornets on Friday. Charlotte hasn't left town with a victory since registering a 93-85 triumph over the Trail Blazers on March 29, 2008.

The Hornets had a chance to end their drought in Portland last February when star guard Kemba Walker scored 40 points but the succumbed 109-103 in overtime. The latest visit to the Pacific Northwest is the fourth stop on a six-game trip for a squad that has dropped six of its last nine games. The Trail Blazers have won five of their past six games and they shot 56.6 percent from the field in Wednesday's 124-112 home win over the Chicago Bulls. "The end of the ball movement was turning into points," Portland point guard Damian Lillard said afterward. "We kept trusting each other and we made more shots. It was good energy in the game. We got something from a lot of guys. When we get those types of efforts from so many different people, we're going to get this type of result."

TV: 10 p.m. ET, FS Southeast (Charlotte), NBCS Northwest (Portland)

ABOUT THE HORNETS (19-21): Starting shooting guard Jeremy Lamb (hamstring) returned to the lineup after a two-game absence and recorded 16 points and six rebounds in 29 minutes during Tuesday's 128-109 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers. "He looked solid. He looked healthy," Charlotte coach James Borrego told reporters afterward. "I didn't feel like he was limited at all. He had a good performance and I think we've got him back in the mix now." Backup shooting guard Malik Monk scored 24 points against the Clippers for his fifth 20-point effort of the season.

ABOUT THE TRAIL BLAZERS (25-17): Portland has at least 25 assists in a season-best four consecutive games after producing 28 against the Bulls. Lillard had 16 points and 10 assists against Chicago for his second double-double in three games and fifth of the season. Shooting guard CJ McCollum scored 24 points on 10-of-14 shooting and he has tallied 24 or more in four of the past eight contests, topped by a 35-point performance against the Philadelphia 76ers when he made 13-of-18 shots.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Trail Blazers are 22-6 at home versus the Hornets.

2. Walker tallied just 13 points on 6-of-18 shooting against the Clippers for his second subpar performance of the month (11 points on 4-of-14 shooting versus the Dallas Mavericks on Jan. 2).

3. Portland C Jusuf Nurkic scored 18 points against Chicago and is averaging 21.8 points and 12.4 rebounds over the past five games.

PREDICTION: Trail Blazers 126, Hornets 111

Chicago Bulls vs. Golden State Warriors Preview and Predictions 2019-01-11

NBA Predictions 10th January 2019 by Gracenote
Bulls vs. Warriors Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 01/10/2019

Golden State Warriors shooting guard Klay Thompson got hot in a win over the New York Knicks on Tuesday, but it was nothing compared to the flames coming off the All-Star the last time he faced the Chicago Bulls. Thompson will try to post another historic performance when the Warriors host the Bulls on Friday.

Thompson knocked down an NBA-record 14 3-pointers in a 149-124 shellacking of Chicago on Oct. 29, going 14-of-24 from beyond the arc en route to 52 points. Thompson's second-highest scoring output of the season came on Tuesday, when knocked down 18-of-29 from the floor and hit seven 3-pointers in a 43-point performance that didn't surprise coach Steve Kerr, who told reporters: "I absolutely expect him to break through, and tonight was a night where he did so." The Bulls had similar trouble defensively at Portland on Wednesday, when they allowed the Trail Blazers to shoot 56.6 percent from the field in a 124-112 loss - their fifth consecutive setback. "We didn't have the grit when we needed at the defensive end," Chicago coach Jim Boylen told reporters. "We gave up two big offensive rebounds in the third, which I thought turned the game and gave them some light. But I told the team that I'm not discouraged at all."

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, NBCS Chicago, NBCS Bay Area (Golden State)

ABOUT THE BULLS (10-31): Power forward Lauri Markkanen was held to 10 points on 4-of-12 shooting in 32 minutes on Wednesday while missing all three of his 3-point attempts. "I know I got to get more out of me and get to my spots," Markkanen told reporters. "I don't think I got my good looks. At times, it was (frustrating). We gotta get our offense going and finding the open guy and getting everybody involved. We gotta work on that. But other guys played well." One of the guys who played well was rookie forward Wendell Carter Jr., who scored 22 points on 7-of-9 shooting in the setback.

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (27-14): Golden State reached the NBA Finals in each of the last four seasons - winning three championships - but needed Tuesday's win to snap a three-game home losing streak and is enduring an up-and-down regular season. "Who cares?" Warriors forward Kevin Durant asked reporters. "We know how to play good basketball. We end up winning 54 games or 60 games it doesn't matter. As long as we go into the playoffs in a good rhythm with good habits and healthy it don't matter if we win 55 or 60 games. Regular season is just to build your habits up, not to chase anything as far as a record's concerned. So, we'll just fall into whatever happens and we'll keep plugging away every single day." Golden State is still sitting in second place in the West and averaged 126 points in winning four of the last five games.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Warriors PG Stephen Curry handed out a season-high 14 assists in his first double-double of 2018-19 on Tuesday.

2. Bulls PF Bobby Portis is averaging 16 points on 12-of-23 shooting in two games since returning from an ankle injury.

3. The Warriors took the last three in the series, including a 143-94 triumph in the latest matchup in Golden State on Nov. 24, 2017.

PREDICTION: Warriors 125, Bulls 100

Indiana Hoosiers vs. Maryland Terrapins Preview and Predictions 2019-01-11

NCAAB Predictions 10th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/10/2019

Maryland has been on quite the roll, emerging victorious in three straight Big Ten confrontations to run its winning streak to four games. The Terrapins look to continue their good fortune on Friday night when they host 24th-ranked Indiana at Xfinity Center in College Park, Md.

Junior point guard Anthony Cowan Jr. scored 23 of his career high-tying 27 points in the second half and made all 10 of his attempts from the free-throw line as Maryland sank 24 of 27 shots from the charity stripe in Tuesday's 82-67 triumph at Minnesota. "We just keep getting better. Don't sleep on the fact that when we made our (22-7) run, we had four freshmen in there with Anthony," Maryland coach Mark Turgeon said. Indiana saw its seven-game winning streak come to a halt in Sunday's 74-63 setback at undefeated Michigan, with foul trouble limiting the minutes of senior forward Juwan Morgan (25 points) and freshman guard Romero Langford (17). "When those two guys aren't on the floor, we're a different team offensively and defensively," Hoosiers coach Archie Miller said of Morgan (16.7 points per game, 7.8 rebounds) and Langford (18.2 ppg, 5.7 rpg).

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS1

ABOUT INDIANA (12-3, 3-1 Big Ten): Langford has delivered on expectations after the highly coveted recruit committed to the Hoosiers, but his 3-point shot remains a work in progress. The 6-foot-6, 215-pound Indiana native is just 12-for-53 from long range, including 3-of-18 in his last six games. While Morgan has recorded six double-doubles this season, perimeter players Justin Smith (8.5 points per game), Aljami Durham (8.4) and Devonte Green (8.4) have stepped up on occasion while freshman Rob Phinisee drilled the buzzer-beating basket in a 71-68 win over Butler on Dec. 15.

ABOUT MARYLAND (13-3, 4-1): Freshman forward Jalen Smith continued his sharp shooting by improving to 33-for-56 from the field in his last five contests by making 7 of 10 shots from the field and 7 of 8 from the free-throw line for a season-best 21 points against the Golden Gophers. The 6-foot-10 Baltimore native established a physical presence against Minnesota senior Jordan Murphy and likely will be tasked with defending the 6-8 Morgan on Friday. Cowan scored 18 points in his last encounter versus Indiana, but his bid to tie the score with six seconds remaining in the second half caromed off the rim in a 71-68 setback on Jan. 22, 2018.

TIP-INS

1. While Maryland excelled at the free-throw line in its last outing, Indiana is shooting just 65 percent from the charity stripe this season.

2. Morgan collected 25 points, five rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots as the Hoosiers defeated the Terrapins last January.

3. Maryland sputtered out of the blocks in each game of its winning streak, trailing by nine points early against Radford and by seven versus both Rutgers and Minnesota.

PREDICTION: Maryland 78, Indiana 71

Purdue Boilermakers vs. Wisconsin Badgers Preview and Predictions 2019-01-11

NCAAB Predictions 10th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/10/2019

Purdue received quite the wake-up call in its last outing at fifth-ranked Michigan State, absorbing a lopsided drubbing to bring an end to its dominating three-game winning streak. It was the fourth loss in as many true road games for the Boilermakers, who will try to rebound when they visit Wisconsin on Friday night in a Big Ten matchup.

Purdue has played one of the nation's toughest schedules, with three of the road losses coming against ranked opponents Florida State, Michigan and Michigan State. The Boilermakers will need a bounce-back game from guard Carsen Edwards, who averages a conference-best 24.5 points but was limited to a season-low 11 points by Michigan State. Wisconsin, which sits one spot out of the Top 25 after consecutive losses to Western Kentucky and Minnesota, halted the mini-slide with an impressive 71-52 rout at Penn State on Sunday. The Badgers ended a four-game losing streak in the series with a four-point win over Purdue last season to improve to 12-4 against the Boilermakers at the Kohl Center.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, FS1

ABOUT PURDUE (9-6, 2-2 Big Ten): Purdue will be short-handed for Friday's matchup after coach Matt Painter ruled out junior center Evan Boudreaux due to a groin injury suffered in the previous game. Boudreaux, averaging 7.5 points and 4.4 rebounds, started the past four games after Matt Haarms started the first 11, but Painter may be hesitant go back to Haarms because of the spark he has provided coming off the bench. Another option for the Boilermakers is freshman Trevion Williams, who has yet to start a game but registered his first career double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds on Tuesday.

ABOUT WISCONSIN (11-4, 3-1): Forward Ethan Happ, who ranks third in the Big Ten in scoring (19.3) and second in rebounding (10.3) after collecting 22 points and eight boards in the win over Penn State, is shooting a blistering 64.7 percent in the second half this season. Brad Davison is one of two sophomores who are providing increased production of late, shooting 41.8 percent from long range and knocking down 13 of 20 3-pointers in the past five games. Classmate Nate Reuvers has scored in double figures in four of the past six games while tying a career high with five blocks against Penn State.

OVERTIME

1.Edwards scored 43 points in the two matchups versus Wisconsin last season.

2. Happ is third in the nation with 10 double-doubles.

3. Purdue has been limited to 61 points or fewer in its last four trips to Wisconsin.

PREDICTION: Wisconsin 66, Purdue 60

Buffalo Sabres vs. Carolina Hurricanes Preview and Predictions 2019-01-11

NHL Predictions 10th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/10/2019

The Carolina Hurricanes were closing in on their sixth consecutive victory last time out before letting it slip away. Carolina attempts to bounce back when it hosts the Buffalo Sabres on Friday.

The Hurricanes carried a lead into the third period at Tampa Bay on Thursday before allowing a pair of power-play goals in the latter half of the session and went on to drop a 3-1 decision. Captain Justin Williams extended his goal-scoring streak to three games and point run to five contests (four goals, one assist) by registering his 300th career goal in the setback. Buffalo has won two of its last three games after erupting for five goals in the second period on Tuesday en route to a 5-1 home triumph over New Jersey. Former Hurricane Jeff Skinner netted his team-leading 29th tally in the win for the Sabres, who have lost three straight and seven of their last eight on the road (1-5-2).

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NHL Network, MSG (Buffalo), FS Carolinas

ABOUT THE SABRES (23-14-6): Tuesday was a night to remember for a pair of Sabres as C.J. Smith and defenseman Lawrence Pilut each scored their first goal in the NHL. An undrafted left wing who signed with the team in March 2017, the 24-year-old Smith was playing in his sixth career game while Pilut - a 23-year-old Swede who also went undrafted - was skating in his 12th contest in the league. Fourteen different players registered a point against the Devils, tying the franchise record set on Nov. 2, 2006 against Tampa Bay and matched on Oct. 21, 2009 versus Florida.

ABOUT THE HURRICANES (20-18-5): Carolina could be in for a strong performance from Greg McKegg on Friday if his trend continues. The 26-year-old center, who was acquired from Pittsburgh on Feb. 26, has alternated one-goal, one-assist performances with pointless efforts over his first four games of the season. Sebastian Aho, who leads the team with 45 points, has gone two contests without one after notching two in each of his previous three games.

OVERTIME

1. Skinner is one goal away from reaching 30 for the fourth time in his nine seasons in the NHL.

2. Carolina D Jaccob Slavin was kept off the scoresheet Thursday after recording his 100th career point with a goal against the New York Islanders two nights earlier.

3. Buffalo's second period on Tuesday was its highest-scoring session since it tallied five times in the third of a 5-1 victory over Carolina on Nov. 28, 2009.

PREDICTION: Sabres 4, Hurricanes 1

Detroit Red Wings vs. Winnipeg Jets Preview and Predictions 2019-01-11

NHL Predictions 11th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/11/2019

The Winnipeg Jets aim for their third consecutive home victory when they host the Detroit Red Wings on Friday. Winnipeg scored a total of 12 goals in winning its last two contests at Bell MTS Place but managed only a pair in Thursday's 3-2 loss at Minnesota.

Mark Scheifele scored in the setback for the Jets to tie Patrick Laine for the team lead in goals (24) and give him two tallies and three assists during his modest three-game point streak. Scheifele has tallied in back-to-back contests after enduring a five-game drought. Detroit is coming off a 1-3-1 homestand that concluded with 3-2 setbacks against Washington on Sunday and Montreal two nights later. The Red Wings have lost three straight and six of their last seven on the road (1-4-2) but could receive some help Friday as defenseman Mike Green is expected to return to the lineup after missing 13 games with a lower-body injury.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FS Detroit, TSN3, TVA (Winnipeg)

ABOUT THE RED WINGS (16-22-7): Andreas Athanasiou scored both goals against the Canadiens on Tuesday to pull within one of Dylan Larkin (18) for the team lead. The 24-year-old forward has netted six tallies over his last seven contests and is one away from matching the career high he set in 2016-17. Larkin, who tops the club with 41 points, was kept off the scoresheet on Tuesday for just the second time in his last 18 games as Detroit lost for the 12th time in 14 contests.

ABOUT THE JETS (27-14-2): Scheifele's goal against the Wild drew him within one point of Blake Wheeler, who leads the club with 55. The 32-year-old Wheeler, who was held without a point on Thursday, has been kept off the scoresheet in back-to-back contests just once this season (Nov. 16 and 19). Bryan Little notched an assist on Thursday, giving him four points in his last three games and leaving him one shy of 500 for his career.

Florida Panthers vs. Calgary Flames Preview and Predictions 2019-01-11

NHL Predictions 11th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/11/2019

The Calgary Flames have reached 60 points this season in the second-least amount of games in franchise history and look to continue adding to their impressive story when they host the Florida Panthers on Friday night. The only Calgary team to get to 60 points in fewer games was the 1988-89 Stanley Cup champion (41) and the Flames made it to 60 in 45 contests after outlasting Colorado 5-3 on Wednesday.

"We were a little worried about it, coming off the trip," Calgary coach Bill Peters told reporters after his team won its third straight and earned a point for the seventh time in eight games (6-1-1). "That first game home is usually a little bit tough. But we found a way to grind it out." Right wing Johnny Gaudreau boasts seven goals and eight assists during a six-game point streak going into the matchup against the Panthers, who are in dire need of a victory while sitting 10 points out of playoff position entering Friday. Florida missed a golden chance Thursday when it surrendered a goal to Connor McDavid with 8 seconds left in regulation and went on to suffer a 4-3 setback in a shootout at Edmonton, losing for the fourth straight game (0-2-2). Left wing Jonathan Huberdeau leads the Panthers with 46 points, but has been kept off the scoresheet in two straight and three of the last five games, and Florida is 1-of-13 on the power play the past five contests.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, FS Florida, Sportsnet West (Calgary)

ABOUT THE PANTHERS (17-17-8): Four of the top five scorers were blanked in the loss at Edmonton, including captain Aleksander Barkov (four points, last four games), and Evgenii Dadonov (two points, eight contests). Left wing Mike Hoffman had an assist against the Oilers to push his season total to 39 points and registered five of his team-leading 20 goals in the past nine contests. Rookie Henrik Borgstrom,a 2016 first-round pick, recorded his fourth goal Thursday in 12 games since being recalled while fellow forward Denis Malgin scored for the third time in seven games.

ABOUT THE FLAMES (28-13-4): Gaudreau leads the lethal top trio with team highs of 26 goals and 66 points while linemates Sean Monahan (23, 54) and Elias Lindholm (21, 51) have combined for 21 points in the past six contests. Matthew Tkachuk scored Wednesday to give Calgary four players with 20 goals through 45 games for the second time in its history, matching the 1987-88 squad (Joe Mullen, Mike Bullard, Hakan Loob, Joe Nieuwendyk). Defenseman Mark Giordano leads the league with a plus-31 rating and boasts seven of his career high-matching 37 assists in the last six contests.

OVERTIME

1. Florida G Roberto Luongo, who was rested Thursday, has 27 career wins against the Flames - second only to Edmonton (28).

2. Calgary G David Rittich (16-4-3, .921 save percentage) has won four straight games, despite allowing 13 goals.

3. The Flames have won four of the last five meetings, but the Panthers won the last matchup in Calgary 6-3 in February.

PREDICTION: Flames 4, Panthers 2

Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Anaheim Ducks Preview and Predictions 2019-01-11

NHL Predictions 10th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/10/2019

The Pittsburgh Penguins begin a season-high five-game road trip Friday against the Anaheim Ducks, who are mired in a franchise-worst nine-game losing streak (0-6-3). Ottawa snapped an eight-game slide Wednesday with a 2-1 overtime victory over Anaheim, which has scored 12 goals during its skid, while Pittsburgh has no such offensive woes - recording 40 goals in winning nine of its last 10 contests.

"In the offensive zone, we're standing still," Ducks defenseman Hampus Lindholm told reporters. "If you look at the high-scoring teams in the league, it feels like they have guys flying everywhere. They involve the 'D' a lot and have forwards coming up. It's hard to defend teams with guys always on the move. A lot of times, we get stagnant. We need to find ways to get through (the opposing defense)." The Penguins' hot streak has coincided with the resurgence of Bryan Rust, who has scored 10 of his 11 goals this season in the last 13 games after recording two in Tuesday's 5-1 victory over Florida. "I've been the product of some real good plays," Rust told reporters. "Just try to keep my feet moving, get to open space and guys are finding me and I'm able to put it in." Anaheim has won three straight meetings including 4-2 on Dec. 17 in Pittsburgh as John Gibson made 28 saves, improving to 4-3-0 with a 3.47 goals-against average and .895 save percentage against his hometown team.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh, Prime Ticket (Anaheim), Sportsnet East, Sportsnet Ontario, Sportsnet Pacific

ABOUT THE PENGUINS (24-13-6): Sidney Crosby has scored five times and recorded 16 assists in his last 13 games, increasing his team-leading totals to 20 goals and 53 points. Evgeni Malkin (13 goals, 45 points) has recorded a point in all four January games (goal, four assists) and is a plus-3 during that span, improving his club-worst rating to minus-11. Patric Hornqvist (15 goals, 26 points) left Tuesday's game midway through the first period after taking a puck to the face.

ABOUT THE DUCKS (19-17-8): Rickard Rakell, who scored 87 goals in the three previous seasons but has only five in 31 games in 2018-19, returned Wednesday after missing 13 contests (ankle) and was a minus-2 with two shots in 19 minutes, 25 seconds of ice time. Ryan Getzlaf (nine goals, team-high 29 points) hasn't recorded a point in his last eight games - the longest drought of his career. Jakob Silfverberg scored Wednesday and shares the team lead in goals (11) with Pontus Aberg and Ondrej Kase, who haven't scored in seven and four games, respectively.

OVERTIME

1. Pittsburgh D Brian Dumoulin is a team-high plus-27, which was second-best in the league behind Calgary D Mark Giordano (plus-31) entering Thursday.

2. Anaheim has played a league-most 13 overtime games at home and won five of them.

3. The Penguins are 6-1-1 versus the Pacific Division while the Ducks are 7-3-1 against the Metropolitan.

PREDICTION: Penguins 3, Ducks 2

Friday's Big Ten Tips
David Schwab

The betting board for this Friday night’s action in college basketball is on the lighter side, but FOX Sports 1 has dialed up an interesting doubleheader of games in the Big Ten.

First off at 7:00 p.m. ET, No. 22 Indiana will be on the road against Maryland in College Park. In a 9:00 p.m. ET tip at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wisconsin will play host to Purdue.

No. 22 Indiana Hoosiers at Maryland Terrapins (FOX Sports 1, 7:00 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Maryland -5, Total 142 ½

Betting Matchup

Indiana is one of four Big Ten teams ranked in the current AP Top 25, but it will most likely need a win on Friday to remain on the list. The Hoosiers’ recent straight-up seven-game winning streak came to an end last Sunday in a 74-63 loss to Michigan as nine-point road underdogs. They are 1-3 against the spread on the road this season as part of a 7-8 record against the closing number overall.

The total went OVER 131 points against the Wolverines, but it has stayed UNDER in 10 of 15 games this year. Freshman guard Romeo Langford scored 17 points in Sunday’s loss after putting up 28 his previous game against Illinois.

The Terrapins could slip into the national rankings by winning this game after winning their last four outings SU with a 3-1 mark ATS. Three of the wins were against conference foes including Tuesday’s 82-67 road upset against Minnesota as two-point underdogs.

Maryland is 13-3 SU overall with a 9-7 record ATS. The total has gone OVER in its last six games. Junior guard Anthony Cowan Jr. has been this team’s leading scorer with 17.2 points per game and, with 27 points against Minnesota, he has exceeded that average in two of his last three starts.

Betting Trends

-- The Hoosiers are 5-2 ATS in their last seven Friday games and they are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games following a SU loss. The total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in 10 of their last 12 road games.

-- The Terrapins have failed to cover in 11 of their last 15 home games with a 2-5-1 record ATS in their last eight home games against a team with a SU losing record on the road. The total has gone OVER in their last four games played at home.

-- The home team in this matchup has covered the spread in the last four meetings with the total staying UNDER in four of the last five games between the two.

Purdue Boilermakers at Wisconsin Badgers (FOX Sports 1, 9:00 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Wisconsin -4 ½, Total 136 ½

Betting Matchup

Purdue opened Big Ten play in early December with a road loss to Michigan and a win at home against Maryland. In recent conference play, it beat Iowa by 16 points as a 9 ½-point home favorite before coming up well short on Tuesday night in a 77-59 loss to Michigan State as a seven-point underdog on the road. This roller-coaster ride is indicative of the Boilermakers’ overall record of 9-6 SU (7-7 ATS).

They tend to win the games they are supposed to, but they have failed to cover in two of three games this season as underdogs. Led by junior guard Carsen Edwards’ 24.5-point scoring average, Purdue is scoring 77.6 PPG. He was held to 11 points in Tuesday’s loss.

Wisconsin has been another up and down team this season at 11-4 SU with an 8-7 record ATS. Its stint in the national rankings came to an end with a stunning 83-76 loss to Western Kentucky on Dec. 29 as a 6 ½-point road favorite. The Badgers then lost to Minnesota as nine-point favorites at home before last Sunday’s 71-52 rout of Penn State as two-point road favorites.

Wisconsin’s top scorer this season has been senior forward Ethan Happ with 19.3 PPG. With 22 points in the win against the Nittany Lions, he has put up at least 19 points in three of his last four games.

Betting Trends

-- The Boilermakers have gone just 3-7-1 ATS in their last 11 road games and they are 7-18-1 ATS in their last 26 conference games. The total has stayed UNDER in four of their last five games on the road.

-- The Badgers are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 games following a SU win, but they have failed to cover in four of their last five games against a SU winning team. The total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in 11 of their last 13 Friday games.

-- The home team is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings and the total has stayed UNDER in the last four meetings at Wisconsin.

Taming the Terrapins

There has been no stopping the Maryland Terrapins, who carry a four-game winning streak into Friday's encounter with the visiting Indiana Hoosiers. Maryland has won six of seven overall while finishing above the total six consecutive times, including each of their last four home games. The Hoosiers are a dismal 1-3 SU on the road this season but have done well to limit scoring for the most part, having gone 9-2-1 to the under in their past 12 games away from Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. The teams have also finished below the number in four of their past five meetings.
Doubling Down

Combining the quirky with the concrete isn't always a solid approach but doing so this weekend could net bettors a nice payday as the Pittsburgh Panthers visit the N.C. State Wolfpack on Saturday. The Panthers bring two interesting trends into the weekend, having gone an incredible 10-1-1 ATS in their previous 12 games against teams with winning records and a ridiculous 23-5 to the under in their past 28 games played on a Saturday. But if you're thinking about creating a fun parlay here, be aware that the host Wolfpack are 7-2 ATS in their past nine home games.

Reversal of Fortune?

The Kansas Jayhawks have been a less-than-inspiring cover option this season, carrying a 7-8 ATS record into Saturday's Big 12 encounter with the host Baylor Bears. And things have been even worse away from Allen Fieldhouse; their only two losses this season have come on the road, and they're just 1-4 ATS in their past five away games overall. But the Jayhawks are in good shape to turn things around Saturday – they're 10-2 ATS in their previous 12 visits to Ferrell Center, and the road team has successfully covered in 20 of the last 28 meetings between the teams overall (with one push).

Team News

The Jayhawks will have to do without one of their most reliable big men, with center Udoka Azubuike undergoing season-ending surgery on his right hand. Azubuike was a force in the middle for Kansas, averaging 13.4 points and 6.8 rebounds while shooting better than 70 percent from the field. Kansas has lost two of its last three games without him.
The Oregon Ducks are starting to feel the pressure of having to make do without sensational center Bol Bol, who will miss the remainder of the season with a foot injury. The Ducks are just 3-3 SU and 2-4 ATS with Bol on the sidelines, compared to a 6-3 SU mark and a 5-4 ATS record with Bol – one of the top prospects in the nation – in the lineup.

National Title Odds

Duke may have fallen to No. 2 in the coaches' poll, but the Blue Devils remain a rock-solid No. 1 option in oddsmakers' eyes. Vegas has the Zion Williamson-led powerhouse as a +150 favorite to capture the national title this spring, well ahead of the runners-up Gonzaga Bulldogs (+1,100) and Michigan Wolverines (+1,100).

Oddsmakers still have faith in the Kentucky Wildcats despite their stunningly slow start. The Wildcats, who have dropped to No. 18 in both the coaches' poll and the Associated Press rankings, carry the seventh-best odds of winning the national championship at +1,700, sandwiched between the Tennessee Volunteers (+1,400) and Nevada Wolf Pack (+1,800).

Looking for a good live underdog play? Consider the Iowa State Cyclones, who are listed at +10,000 to win their first NCAA title in program history. The Cyclones were the biggest movers in both polls last week, jumping six spots to 21st in the AP poll and five spots to No. 20 in the coaches' poll after trouncing Kentucky 77-60.

Betting Trends

Road teams have been a slightly better cover option over the past seven days, converting at a 52 percent clip (162-149-2). That has closed the overall gap for the season to the width of a betting slip, with the home team covering 1,236 times and the road team making good on 1,233 occasions (with 49 pushes).

Totals betting has been a little more one-sided, with the under at 53.7 percent of non-overtime games, and 51.8 percent overall. And those trends have been even more pronounced over the previous 30 days, with 55.1 percent of non-overtime games and 52.9 percent of all contests finishing below the total.

Oklahoma continues to be the top cover/under parlay option in all of Division I. The Sooners enter the weekend with a sparkling 12-1-2 ATS record to go along with a 4-11 O/U mark. And those records are even more pronounced at Lloyd Noble Center, where Oklahoma is 6-0 ATS and 0-6 O/U entering Saturday's home date with TCU.

Friday's Essentials
Tony Mejia

Game of the Night - Chicago at Golden State (-15.5, 221.5) at Portland, 10:35 ET

Friday night’s card is filled with matchups where the home team is clearly favored. Of the nine contests, five hosts are laying nine or more points, requiring a double-digit win to pull off a cover. There’s only one game where the spread is inside five points, but that matchup pits last-place teams as the Timberwolves look to get back to .500 against the visiting Mavericks.

I’ll look at all of the night’s matchups below, but wanted to touch on the game expected to be the biggest blowout just to see if there’s any value in taking 15.5 points with the visiting Bulls in their lone visit to Oakland.

The Warriors hung 149 points in a 25-point win when these teams squared off in Chicago back on Oct. 29. Klay Thompson, who comes off a tremendous shooting game against New York, scored 52 points against the Bulls, setting an NBA record with 14 3-pointers.

Last season’s visit to Oracle produced a 143-94 loss. When it came through in February of 2017, Chicago lost 123-92. It has lost six of seven in this series.

Golden State was saddled with its largest spread of the NBA season on Tuesday night and covered the 17 points handily in an 122-95 victory over the Knicks. The Warriors built up a lead that got up to 33 points and won every quarter, riding a 43-point night from Thompson. Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant actually combined to shoot just 5-for-19 from 3-point range while Curry finished 5-for-19 from the field on his own, so the carnage would’ve been even worse had he shot his typical percentage. The 27-point margin of victory was the Warriors’ second-largest of the season, trailing only a 125-97 rout of Portland on Nov. 23 in terms of dominance.

While New York has lost 15 of 17, Chicago has dropped 22 of 28, including five straight. This will be the Bulls’ 29th consecutive game as an underdog. They’re 0-11 straight up as a double-digit ‘dog and have covered only three times in those contests. Their biggest upset came in a 98-93 win in San Antonio, which closed as a 9.5-point ‘chalk’ back on Dec. 15, in a game where they ralled from a 21-point deficit by winning the second half 55-31.

Neither leading scorer Zach LaVine nor top reserve Bobby Portis participated in that game, while Lauri Markkanen, Kris Dunn and Portis were absent in the October clash against the Warriors. Justin Holiday and Cameron Payne started in that loss but have since been moved to different teams. Holiday is now with the Grizzlies and Payne is with the Cavs.

Dunn, the team’s customary point guard and arguably the top backcourt asset due to his effectiveness on both sides of the ball, has dished out seven assists in nine of the last 11 games and has scored in double-figures in 11 of 12 since returning from an MCL sprain that cost him nearly two months. He’ll make Curry and Thompson work far harder than they had to in Chicago. LaVine and reserve guard Antonio Blakeney each scored 21 points in the 25-point loss to the Warriors, shooting a combined 6-for-12 from 3-point range. LaVine is 'probable' after suffering an ankle sprain.

The presence of Markkanen and Portis should afford their guards the luxury of more space to work with, so we should see improvement over the next few weeks if everyone can stay healthy. Dunn, LaVine, Markkanen, Portis and rookie Wendell Carter, Jr. have played in only four contests this season, losing them all. The Bulls are 5-12 under new head coach Jim Boylen, who replaced Fred Hoiberg in early December. Chicago’s current five-game losing streak is its second-largest of the season. The Bulls have lost seven games by at least 25 points.

This grueling five-game Western road swing they’re embarked upon opened with a 124-112 loss in Portland on Wednesday, allowing the Blazers to shoot nearly 57 percent while being outscored off the bench 56-41. Chicago’s trip continues on Saturday night against the Jazz before continuing Tuesday against the Lakers and concluding next Thursday in Denver. The Bulls will be heavy underdogs in each of the contests, though probably not by as many points as they’re getting tonight.

The Warriors will play seven of their next eight games after this one on the road and will visit Dallas on Sunday night. They’re expected to have one more home game before the DeMarcus Cousins experience begin since the All-Star center isn’t expected to make his debut until after Jan. 16 matchup against the Pelicans. Everyone will be asked to make some concessions to get him up to speed by the postseason, so this could be one of the final games where we’re seeing the defending champs as we know them.

The Dubs have only won four of their last eight home games and were 1-9 against the spread at Oracle prior to Wednesday’s rout of the Knicks. Incredibly, they haven’t covered consecutive games at home since Nov. 3. They lost last year’s 42nd game in Oakland against the Clippers last season, falling to 33-9. Their 27-14 record the Warriors’ worst at the halfway point since the 2013-14 season, the team’s last with Mark Jackson at the helm. They open Friday’s action 1.5 games behind the Nuggets for the top record in the Western Conference. Chicago is tied with New York at 10-31 for the third-worst mark in the entire NBA, ranking ahead of only Cleveland (8-34) and Phoenix (10-33).

Best of the Rest

Milwaukee at Washington, 7:05 p.m. ET: The Bucks approach the halfway point of their season looking for their 30th win as they try to increase the NBA’s highest winning percentage. Giannis Antetokounmpo is expected to play despite a hip issue. Milwaukee is the only team in the league with eight wins over its last 10 contests and opened a three-game road trip with an impressive victory in Houston. This will be its first meeting of the season against the Wizards, who won the last encounter between the teams last February. Washington is 4-3 since losing John Wall to heel surgery and come off an upset of the 76ers to improve to 12-7 at home. Otto Porter scored 23 points off the bench and will look to slow down Greek Freak and friends behind Trevor Ariza and Jeff Green, both of whom have played well since Markieff Morris was lost for at least six weeks due to a neck injury. The Wizards shot a season-best 48 percent (13-for-27) from 3-point range with Bradley Beal tying a season-best by shooting 6-for-11. He’s averaging 28.8 points over the last five games.

Atlanta at Philadelphia, 7:05 p.m. ET: The 76ers had their four-game win streak snapped in D.C. but will look to improve on their NBA-best home record (18-3) in order to bounce back. Philadelphia has only lost back-to-back games twice this season and cruised in its first meeting with the Hawks back on Oct. 29, outrebounding them 64-47 in a 113-92 rout. Kent Bazemore led Atlanta in scoring in that game with 18 points but is out indefinitely due to an ankle injury. The 76ers have been without guard J.J. Redick due to a back injury but may get him back tonight. Rookie shooter Landry Shamet hit eight 3-pointers filling in for Redick earlier this week and is listed as probable.

Indiana at New York, 7:35 p.m. ET, ESPN: The Pacers have followed up a 5-0 run against the spread with an 0-5 mark after getting blown out 135-108 in Boston on Wednesday. Indiana is looking to close out a five-game road swing with a 3-2 mark by taking care of business at Madison Square Garden. Center Myles Turner has been sidelined with a shoulder injury this week, which has really impacted the Indiana defense throughout his three-game absence. The Pacers have allowed 123.7 points, losing two of three to the Raptors and Celtics. He’s questionable to return tonight. Point guard Darren Collison has been playing though a leg injury and should continue at the controls. New York has dropped nine of 10 and list center Enes Kanter as questionable due to illness. He paced the Knicks with 20 points and 15 boards in their 110-99 Dec. 16 loss in Indiana but may be on the trade block and won’t accompany the team to Europe next week even if he is still on the roster. If he doesn’t play, center Luke Kornet should get additional playing time. The Pacers have seen their last seven games go ‘over’ the posted total.

Brooklyn at Toronto, 7:35 p.m. ET: The Nets have gotten Joe Harris and DeMarre Carroll back in the lineup and may see shooting guard Allen Crabbe return soon, so they’re in good shape as they attempt to build on a stretch that has seen them win four of five outright to improve to 13-4 since Dec. 7. This run began with a 106-105 OT upset of the Raptors in Brooklyn as an 8.5-point underdog in which they held a 60-41 advantage on the glass and got 29 points from D’Angelo Russell. Kawhi Leonard and Kyle Lowry played together for the first time in 2019 in Tuesday’s 104-101 win over the Hawks that they secured due to a franchise-record 18 steals. Toronto has won six in a row at home against the Nets and prevailed in 12 of the last 13 matchups.

Cleveland at Houston, 8:05 p.m. ET: The Cavs have the fewest victories in the NBA, but one of their victims were the Rockets, who they took down at the Q as a 6.5-point underdog on Nov. 24. Cleveland won 117-108 behind 29 points from rookie point guard Collin Sexton and a 20-rebound game from Tristan Thompson. James Harden scored 40 points and dished out 13 assists in the loss and will try and avoid a sweep by helping hand Cleveland its 12th consecutive defeat. Although Sexton and Thompson will be in the lineup, top reserve forward Larry Nance, Jr. (knee) remains out and wing scorer Rodney Hood (achilles) is questionable to return to the lineup. Jordan Clarkson has been the primary catalyst for the Cavs of late despite coming off the bench and is his team’s best shot at securing a cover here since the Rockets remain limited on depth. Chris Paul (hamstring) and Eric Gordon (knee) are still out. Cleveland’s last five games have all surpassed the posted total.

Dallas at Minnesota, 8:05 p.m. ET: Ryan Saunders debuted as Timberwolves’ interim head coach with an upset victory over Oklahoma City. If Andrew Wiggins can continue to play well, Minnesota has a chance of overcoming all the drama caused by the now-traded Jimmy Butler and now-fired Tom Thibodeau to make consecutive playoff appearances. He scored 40 against the Thunder. Meanwhile, the 32-year-old son of late Minnesota favorite Flip Saunders will make his home debut with everyone on the roster firmly in his corner, so this could be an emotional night at Target Center. Derrick Rose is scheduled to return from an ankle injury to try and help the Timberwolves match a season-best with a fourth straight win to climb back to .500. Dallas is an NBA-worst 3-18 on the road but beat the Timberwolves140-136 back on Oct. 20 thanks to 26 points from rookie Luka Doncic. Mavs point guard Dennis Smith, Jr. has already been ruled out due to a back issue, so J.J. Barea will likely get more minutes and rookie Jalen Brunson is likely to start. The ‘over’ is on an 11-1 run in Minnesota games. Meanwhile, the under is 7-0-1 in Dallas’ last eight contests.

L.A. Lakers at Utah, 10:05 p.m. ET, ESPN: LeBron James didn’t make the trip to Salt Lake City, so Kyle Kuzma will be in the spotlight as he returns to his old college stomping grounds. Jae Crowder will likely be assigned to slow down the second-year forward as he looks to follow up scoring 41 points in just three quarters to help L.A. crush the Pistons on Wednesday night. With Brandon Ingram and Lonzo Ball enjoying productive weeks, this could be a big week in the development of the Lakers’ young supporting cast. Currently, the Lakers reside in the No. 8 spot in the Western Conference, two games up on the Kings and these Jazz. Utah will be without point guards Ricky Rubio (thigh) and Dante Exum (ankle), so Brazilian Raul Neto is likely to start and play a major role alongside Donovan Mitchell, who should be the primary ball handler. After a dreadful start to his sophomore season in the pros, Mitchell is averaging 24.4 points and 4.2 assists this month and is shooting 16-for-34 from 3-point range, a marked improvement. Utah swept L.A. last season and will be looking to get back on track in the series after suffering a 90-83 loss at Staples in the only meeting of the season back on Nov. 23.

Charlotte at Portland, 10:05 p.m. ET: Keep an eye on Damian Lillard's availabilty here. He was holding his elbow during a blowout win over Chicago last time out and has been diagnosed with an elbow strain that the team may choose to be cautious with since they visit Denver for a more important game on Sunday. Portland has won 10 of 14, including three straight contests and would likely rely on C.J. McCollum to serve as primary playmaker if Lillard sits. Shooters Nik Stauskas and Seth Curry would be in for a bump in playing time as well. The Hornets are on their fourth stop of a six-game roadie and haven't been good outside of Charlotte, winning just five of 18 games. The Hornets are trying to get away with playing small due to the absence of starting center Cody Zeller, which may hurt them against a surging Jusuf Nurkic. Portland has won 14 of 18 matchups between these teams since '09, including 10 in a row at home.

Indiana is getting way too many points here. Maryland is better than anticipated and coming off a a couple of nice road wins over Rutgers and Minnesota. I'm not saying the Terps shouldn't be favored here, but I would have it much closer to 2.5 to 3-points. I wouldn't be shocked at all if Indiana went on the road and won.
The Hoosiers only loss in Big Ten play is a 9-point defeat at Michigan and who knows how that game goes if they don't start out in a 21-9 hole. That was their most recent game, which is worth noting, as they are a rock-solid 9-4 ATS last 13 off a SU loss.
Maryland is a mere 4-10-1 ATS last 15 home games and favorites off an upset win as a road dog are a mere 18-51 (26.1%) ATS over the last 5 seasons when they play on Friday night. Take Indiana!

NCAA-B | Wright State vs Northern Kentucky
Play on: Northern Kentucky -5½ -105 at BMaker

My 1* Free Play is on NKU.
Wright State enters off an 89-73 win over Oakland in its latest action. Cole Gentry had 22 points and four boards.
NKU also enters off a win, pulling away for a convincing 95-73 victory over Detroit. I think the Norse take advantage of home floor tonight and build off that convincing effort. Drew McDonald was a standout in the latest win for NKU with 23 points and five boards (one of five players in double digits in scoring for NKU).
It’s payback time for NKU, as WSU was the only league team to sweep the season series a year ago.
McDonald is averaging 18.6 points, 10 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game and he presents a major matchup issue no matter who he faces. WSU ranks 342nd nationally in three point percentage defense, which I think plays a big part here as well.
I’m laying the points and expecting a rout.
Good luck…Larry

NBA | Bucks vs Wizards
Play on: Wizards +6 -107 at pinnacle

Jack’s Free Pick Friday: Washington Wizards +6
The Washington Wizards have been playing a lot better since it was announced that John Wall was out for the season. Players clearly don’t get along with Wall, and they’ve been playing a lot harder and a lot smarter without him dating back to their time without him last season. And they’ve been better also due to the fact that Otto Porter Jr. has returned from injury.
The Wizards are 4-2 SU & 5-1 ATS in their last six games overall. They upset the 76ers by 17 as 3.5-point home dogs, and won by 18 as 10-point road dogs at Oklahoma City. Those two results alone show what they are capable of. And I certainly believe they can hang with the Bucks tonight.
This is clearly a letdown spot for the Bucks, who are coming off a huge National TV win on Wednesday at Houston. They won’t be nearly as motivated to face the Wizards tonight as they were the Rockets. And you can bet the Wizards will be up for this game facing the team with the best record in the Eastern Conference.
Milwaukee is 8-19 ATS in road games off two or more consecutive wins over the last three seasons. The Bucks are 1-10 ATS vs. teams who give up 110-plus points per game in the second half of the season over the last three seasons. Washington is 8-3 ATS in its last 11 home games. The underdog is 5-0 ATS in the last five meetings. Bet the Wizards Friday.

Play on: Nets +9½ -104 at pinnacle

20-9 ALL PREMIUM PICKS L8 DAYS ~ +$25,000 TOP PLAY RUN!
The Brooklyn Nets have won four of their last five games, and I think they'll hang around with the Toronto Raptors at Scotiabank Arena Friday night.
The Raptors have the most wins of any team in the NBA this season but they tend to play down to the level of weaker opposition: case in point a 104-101 win over Atlanta on Tuesday and Toronto is 1-6 ATS in its last seven games vs. a team with a losing straight up record.
Brooklyn also faced the Hawks its last time out but managed to deliver a 116-100 home win. This team is very dangerous when playing with confidence and 9-3 ATS in its last 12 games following a straight up win.
There's not really any reason for Toronto to go for the blowout here, other than the fact that Brooklyn won the first meeting of the season. Revenge spots have not been much of a motivation for Toronto so far though (4-6 ATS).
Free pick on Brooklyn Nets.

NBA | Mavs vs Wolves
Play on: Mavs +5½ -110 at Mirage

We are just not convinced the Timberwolves have righted the ship despite their three-game winning streak. Two of those wins came with the old coach, and now they have a new head man in Ryan Saunders, who won his debut last time out. That win at OKC was impressive, but less so were the wins against the Lakers without LeBron and the Magic. They face a tough test tonight. Dallas has covered in three straight meetings. This team has been bad on the road at 3-18, but they have been finding ways to cover as their 10-11 ATS record on the road demonstrates when compared to their SU record. They have covered in five of their last seven games on the road. The Mavs have a 15-7 long-term cover streak going in this series, and we think they are a big threat to get a SU road win tonight.

Play on: Cavs +14 -112 at betonline

Cavs +14
The Cavs are worth a flyer here.
Cleveland has been a team that has struggled and it's no secret. However, this is too many points here.
The Rockets are dealing with so many injuries right now, it has been tough for them to find any sort of stability. It's been pretty much James Harden or bust for them, which has caused a lot of ups and downs for them throughout their recent contests. Look for Cleveland to try and really lock in on him and force someone else to beat them.
Back Cleveland.
Good Luck, Razor Ray.

NCAA-B | Purdue vs Wisconsin
Play on: UNDER 135 -115

10* FREE NCAAB PICK (Under 135)
I'll take my chances here with the UNDER in Friday's Big Ten showdown that has Purdue visiting Wisconsin. I feel pretty good about getting a big effort here from the Boilermakers, are coming off an ugly 18-point loss at Michigan State. While Wisconsin enters off a 71-52 win at Penn State, they had lost at WKU and at home to Minnesota in their previous two, so there's no feeling good about things after that victory.
It's no secret that Wisconsin plays big time defense. The Badgers are holding opponents to a mere 61.9 ppg at home. Last time out they held the Nittany Lions guard in check and we saw the Boilermakers score just 59 points with their star Carson Edwards really struggling to get going against a stingy Spartans defense. Purdue's defense isn't the greatest, but neither is the Wisconsin offense.
UNDER is 4-1 in Purdue's last 5 road games vs a team with a winning home record and 6-1 in the Badgers last 7 vs a team with a winning record. UNDER is also 6-1 in the last 7 meetings between these two, including 4-0 in the last 4 matchups in Wisconsin. Give me the UNDER 135!

1 Unit FREE PLAY on Portland Trail Blazers -6
The Blazers have been a great bet at home over the past few seasons. They are 31-15 ATS in their last 46 home games. And this is a pretty low number here against a Hornets team that is just 1-5 ATS in their last six road games. The Hornets are 2-12 ATS off a blowout loss by 15 points or more over the last two seasons. Charlotte is 0-5 ATS in its last five road games against a team with a winning home record. The home team is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings. Portland is 9-1 ATS in its last 10 home meetings with Charlotte. Give me the Blazers.

Dave’s Friday Free Play:
1* on Los Angeles Lakers +8
The Key: The Lakers have really rallied together since Luke Walton called out both Lonzo Ball and Brandon Ingram for their lack of passion. They responded well, going 2-0 SU & 2-0 ATS in their last two games since with a 107-97 win at Dallas as 7.5-point dogs and a 113-100 throttling of Detroit at home as 1-point favorites. The Jazz are ripe for the picking right now playing without Ricky Rubio and Dante Exum due to injury, while Raul Neto is also out. The Jazz are laying too big of a price and have been very beatable at home as they are just 9-8 SU at home this year. The Jazz are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games following a win by more than 10 points. Take Los Angeles.

My money is on Chicago to cash in an easy cover here as a massive road dog against the Warriors. There's no debating who the better team is in this one, but I just think the number here has been set too high due to Golden State coming in off a 122-95 thrashing of the Knicks as a 17-point favorite and the Bulls come in off 5 straight losses and a failed cover last time out at Portland. The biggest thing here is we can count on a big effort here from the young Bulls against the defending champs. Hard to say the same about the Warriors getting up to play a team like Chicago. GS is a mere 3-7 ATS last 10 off a cover, 2-5 ATS last 7 off a win by more than 10 and 1-7 ATS last 8 at home vs a team with a losing road record. Bet the Bulls +15.5!
