Buffalo Sabres vs. Columbus Blue Jackets Preview and Predictions 2019-01-29

NHL Predictions 28th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/28/2019

The Columbus Blue Jackets had a chance to enter the All-Star break atop the ultra-competitive Metropolitan Division, only to stumble with a pair of losses in which they scored one goal in each contest. Following a nine-day layoff that included their league-mandated break, the Blue Jackets will look to get back on track when they host the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night.

Columbus, which sits four points back of the first-place New York Islanders and one behind defending Stanley Cup champion Washington, had won four in a row before the back-to-back defeats. Defenseman Seth Jones, who banged his left knee into a goal post at the All-Star Game, did not practice Monday but is expected to play Tuesday. The Sabres are four points out of the final playoff slot in the Eastern Conference but have dropped 16 of 23 since ripping off a 10-game winning streak. "I think (the break is) great. It gives us a reboot, a fresh start," Buffalo coach Phil Housley said. "Getting back to what we did in training camp. Getting back to work and focusing on areas we really need to improve."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, MSG-Buffalo, FS Ohio (Columbus)

ABOUT THE SABRES (24-18-6): Buffalo had a hold-your-breath moment during Monday's practice session when All-Star forwards Jack Eichel and Jeff Skinner -- the team's top two scorers -- were involved in a collision, leaving Eichel slow to get up. "It wasn't a good feeling," said Skinner, who slid into Eichel. "You're falling on your pants there and you don't have much control of where you're going or how to stop. But he's got pretty good reflexes and got out of the way pretty quick, so he was all right." Skinner collected a goal and an assist and Eichel set up a pair of goals in a 5-4 overtime loss at Columbus on Oct. 27.

ABOUT THE BLUE JACKETS (28-17-3): While the status of leading scorer Artemi Panarin and goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky -- both impending free agents -- are hot-button topics in Columbus, Hall of Famer Martin St. Louis joined to team the past two days in his role as special teams consultant. "This isn't Marty coming in and thinking that he's going to change it here, that he's the answer," coach John Tortorella said. "It's just a different voice, a different look sometimes. When he sees certain plays, sometimes he may see it differently." The Blue Jackets rank 27th in the league, converting on 14.6 percent of their power-play chances.

OVERTIME

1. Blue Jackets All-Star F Cam Atkinson had two goals and an assist in the All-Star Game and identical numbers versus Buffalo on Oct. 27.

2. Eichel has amassed 31 of his 52 points in 24 road games while recording 11 in 10 contests versus Columbus.

3. Bobrovsky is 10-4-1 with a 2.50 goals-against average versus the Sabres.

PREDICTION: Blue Jackets 4, Sabres 3

Winnipeg Jets vs. Boston Bruins Preview and Predictions 2019-01-29

NHL Predictions 28th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/28/2019

The Boston Bruins will resume their four-game homestand Tuesday against the Winnipeg Jets, but they'll be without their former Vezina Trophy-winning goaltender. Tuukka Rask was placed on injured reserve Monday after suffering a concussion in Boston's 3-2 loss to the New York Rangers on Jan. 19 - its last contest prior to the All-Star break.

Rask, who is tied with Tiny Thompson for first place on the franchise list with 252 victories, stopped six of the seven shots he faced before exiting in the first period as the Bruins fell to 1-1-0 on their homestand and 1-2-1 in their last four overall games. Brad Marchand tallied in the setback against New York, giving him three goals and as many assists during his four-game point streak. Winnipeg wasted a chance to move two points ahead of idle Nashville for first place in the Central Division as it dropped a 3-1 decision at Philadelphia on Monday. Jack Roslovic scored for the first time in 23 contests as the Jets fell to 1-2-0 on their four-game road trip with their fourth loss in their last five away from home.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, TSN3, TVA (Winnipeg), NESN (Boston)

ABOUT THE JETS (31-16-2): Bryan Little has collected five goals and five assists over his last nine games after setting up Roslovic's tally on Monday. The 31-year-old center, who was selected by the franchise with the 12th overall pick in the 2006 draft, is six assists shy of 300 for his career. Rookie defenseman Sami Niku, who was assigned to Manitoba of the American Hockey League prior to the All-Star break, was recalled on Sunday and registered two shots in 13 minutes, 25 seconds of ice time against the Flyers.

ABOUT THE BRUINS (27-17-5): Trent Frederic was one of several players recalled from Providence of the AHL on Monday and is expected to make his NHL debut against Winnipeg. The 20-year-old center, who was drafted 29th overall in 2016, has recorded 10 goals and seven assists in 37 games with Providence this season. Center Joakim Nordstrom, who has been sidelined since suffering a fractured fibula on Jan. 1, practiced Monday and could be in the lineup versus the Jets.

OVERTIME

1. Bruins RW David Pastrnak, who leads the team with 56 points, has notched one in four of his last five contests following a three-game drought.

2. Winnipeg captain Blake Wheeler, who began his NHL career with the Bruins, will have reached double digits in goals in each of his first 11 seasons with his next tally.

3. In addition to Frederic, Boston recalled G Zane McIntyre and LW Peter Cehlarik from Providence and assigned Cs Ryan Donato and Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson to the AHL club.

PREDICTION: Jets 4, Bruins 3

Philadelphia Flyers vs. New York Rangers Preview and Predictions 2019-01-29

NHL Predictions 28th January 2019 by Gracenote
Flyers vs. Rangers Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 01/28/2019

The New York Rangers' previous attempt to match their season-high four-game winning streak was summarily dismissed by the Philadelphia Flyers, courtesy of a 4-0 romp in November. After falling to Philadelphia once again last month, the Rangers hope the third time is the charm on Tuesday as they host the matchup between the Metropolitan Division rivals.

New York's Mika Zibanejad, who leads the team in assists (27) and points (44), joined Hall-of-Famer Rod Gilbert as the lone members of the franchise to score the game-winning goal in three straight contests. The 25-year-old Swede has recorded five tallies and four assists during his five-game point streak, although he has yet to dent the scoresheet in two meetings with the Flyers. While the Rangers prepare to begin a stretch of playing seven straight contests in the New York Metropolitan area, Philadelphia hit the ground running on Monday as it opened a string of three games in four nights with a 3-1 home victory over Winnipeg. Travis Konecny, who collected a goal and two assists in the first matchup against the Rangers, notched one of each against the Jets as the Flyers won their season-high fourth straight contest.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network, Sportsnet, MSG (New York)

ABOUT THE FLYERS (20-23-6): Philadelphia's hot streak notwithstanding, general manager Chuck Fletcher told reporters that the team expects to have a plan in place regarding soon-to-be unrestricted free agent Wayne Simmonds in the coming weeks. The 30-year-old Simmonds, who has registered four points (two goals, two assists) over his last four games and scored in the Flyers' 3-2 shootout win over New York on Dec. 23, is in the final season of a six-year deal worth an annual average of $3.97 million. Fletcher did toss the label of "untouchable" in the direction of captain Claude Giroux, who notched three of his club-leading assists (38) and points (52) in the first encounter with the Rangers.

ABOUT THE RANGERS (21-20-7): Kevin Hayes hardly could contain himself as he prepares to return to the ice on Tuesday, and thus end a nine-game absence due to an upper-body injury. The 26-year-old Hayes initially sustained the injury while crashing into the boards during a 4-3 overtime loss against Arizona on Dec. 14, however he remained in the lineup for two additional contests following a career-best nine-game point streak. Chris Kreider (team-leading 22 goals) has scored two goals and set up three others in his last four games and also tallied in the meeting with the Flyers in December.

OVERTIME

1. Philadelphia LW James van Riemsdyk has recorded seven goals and nine points in his last six games after mustering just six and 13, respectively, in his previous 26.

2. Newsday reported that Rangers C Mats Zuccarello, who has collected four goals and five assists during his five-game point streak, will sit out Tuesday's contest against the Flyers with a foot injury.

3. Philadelphia has won just one of its last nine games involving back-to-back situations.

PREDICTION: Rangers 4, Flyers 2

#1 LUCY E. (ML=8/1)

LUCY E. - When this jock and conditioner combine forces you have to take a look. Orm and West have been terrific together. Last out, this one was in a race at Mahoning Valley Race Cour in a race with a class rating of 78. Dropping drastically in class figure this time around puts her in a solid position in this race. WITHALITTLEHOPE - Has happened upon a great spot this time out.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 BEAUTIFUL NITE SKY (ML=2/1), #8 CATCHUMDENAE (ML=3/1), #5 WORLD ELITE (ML=4/1),

BEAUTIFUL NITE SKY - The chalk horse is vulnerable here with the lack of drills. This thoroughbred likes to be in the money, but doesn't usually win. Leave out of the top spot. CATCHUMDENAE - Recorded a most unsatisfactory rating last time out in a $4,000 Claiming race on Jan 15th. Doubtful to see an improved performance off of that fig. WORLD ELITE - No success for this racer in a short distance race over the last 60 days tells me that this mare is in a very difficult circumstance

# 8 JEFAZO 10/1

# 5 BLU WITHOUT YOU 9/1

# 2 POPIZAR 3/1

JEFAZO looks to be a solid contender and could score at a price in here. With a formidable jockey who has won at a quite good 16 percent rate over the last month. This has to be one of the top selections. Rodriguezcastr has an excellent ROI over the past 30 days (+20) which ought to help gamblers with this choice. BLU WITHOUT YOU - Looks competitive for the conditions of this outing today, showing solid figs in dirt sprint races lately. Garnered a respectable speed figure last time out. POPIZAR - Is worth considering and may be a bet - strong speed figures (83 average) at today's distance and surface recently. Has ran quite well in dirt sprint races.

# 5 RED SPRING 3/1

# 8 ENDLESS THYME 6/1

# 4 SEAMS DISCREET 5/2

RED SPRING has a solid shot to take this race. Put up a respectable speed rating last time out. Players should take a good look at this one as this mare has one of the best win percentages at this distance in this group of horses in this race. ENDLESS THYME - She has been racing admirably recently while recording solid speed figures. Well above average win rate at this distance/surface. SEAMS DISCREET - Has run soundly when running a dirt sprint race. As of late Arnett has provided players with a very strong winning percentage with horses moving in dirt sprint races.

#3 MAXX EFFORT (ML=8/1)
#5 RAMBLIN' MAN (ML=7/5)
#4 CATS SURFIN (ML=9/2)

MAXX EFFORT - After the event aboard this animal on Jan 9th, the rider is going to know the gelding much better. Don't often see a favorable return on investment like +390. This rider/handler duo has done well together over the last 12 months. This thoroughbred coming off a sharp effort in the last thirty days is a contender in my book. The way this race sets up this gelding will be in the 'garden' spot when they dash for the finish. RAMBLIN' MAN - Faced tougher last time out at Turf Paradise. Based on class figures, this is a weaker group, so I will put this one on my list of probable winners in this race. Just view his latest speed figure, 88. That one fits well in this field. CATS SURFIN - This jockey and trainer are consistent together. Winning percentage when teamed up is hard to beat. On board this horse on Jan 16th and Hebert is back again in the irons in today's contest. Peltier brings him right back. I advocate you stay with this live gelding.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 FAMOUS ROCK STAR (ML=8/5), #1 JIMJIMMYJAMES (ML=8/1),

FAMOUS ROCK STAR - In any affair of 6 furlongs, I like to bet on a contender that has been on the board in short distance affairs recently. JIMJIMMYJAMES - 8/1 is just too low of a price to take on most any thoroughbred that has run poorly in back to back races around the track. Tough to wager on this horse running out of the one slot. His pps show that he doesn't run well out of there.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - CATS SURFIN - With speed figures of 73 and 85, this steed is showing much improvement.

Washington Wizards vs. Cleveland Cavaliers Preview and Predictions 2019-01-29

NBA Predictions 28th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/28/2019

The Cleveland Cavaliers snapped their latest slide at six straight losses with a win over the Chicago Bulls on Sunday and will try to make it back-to-back triumphs for the first time since November when they host the Washington Wizards on Tuesday. The Cavaliers, who own the worst record in the NBA, improved to 2-18 over their last 20 games with Sunday's victory.

Cleveland came within single digits of an opponent once during its latest slide - a 100-94 setback against Miami on Friday - and coach Larry Drew was pleased with how his team executed down the stretch on Sunday. "We haven't been in that situation often, but when we do get there, it's important moving forward that we learn how to play down the stretch, we learn how to execute, how to defensively get the stops we need," Drew told reporters. "... We came up with the plays down the stretch that we needed and that's what let us come up with the win." Washington could not come up with the plays it needed on Sunday and fell to 1-1 on its three-game road trip with a 132-119 setback at San Antonio. The Wizards allowed the Spurs to shoot 57 percent from the floor and were outrebounded 56-41 while falling to 6-19 on the road.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NBCS Washington, FS Ohio (Cleveland)

ABOUT THE WIZARDS (21-28): While the defense was a problem on Sunday, Washington was pleased with the offensive efforts of point guard Tomas Satoransky, who nearly pulled off a triple-double while collecting 21 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. The 27-year-old is starting in place of All-Star John Wall (heel) and posted at least eight assists in each of the last four games. Some of those passes are finding center Thomas Bryant, who scored in double figures in each of the last seven games and posted his third double-double in that stretch with 15 points and 10 boards on Sunday.

ABOUT THE CAVALIERS (10-41): Cleveland is firmly in a rebuilding mode this season but took the ball out of the hands of the youngsters down the stretch on Sunday and instead turned to veteran point guard Matthew Dellavedova. The 28-year-old collected 16 points, five assists and four rebounds in the win while logging 22 minutes - his longest stretch in over a month. "It wasn't just what he was doing offensively as far as making shots, but he did a really good job of getting us organized and did a really good job on the defensive end just being scrappy," Drew told reporters of Dellavedova. "He was consistent with our coverages and going down toward the end there I just felt as well as he had been playing, he needed to be in there."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Cavaliers C Ante Zizic grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds on Sunday.

2. Washington SF Sam Dekker (back) sat out Sunday and is day-to-day.

3. The teams split the first two meetings, with Cleveland earning a 116-101 home win on Dec. 8.

PREDICTION: Wizards 116, Cavaliers 104

Milwaukee Bucks vs. Detroit Pistons Preview and Predictions 2019-01-29

NBA Predictions 28th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/28/2019

The Milwaukee Bucks have yet to drop back-to-back games this season and will try to keep that streak alive when they host the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday. The Bucks had a six-game winning streak come to an end at Oklahoma City on Sunday in the opener of a five-game road trip.

Milwaukee can still claim the best winning percentage in the NBA and is gearing up for a first-place showdown in the Eastern Conference with a trip to Toronto set for Thursday but needs to work out some things on the offensive end. The Bucks scored 42 points in the first half on Sunday and could not quite make up the difference with a stronger second half while dropping a 118-112 decision to the Thunder on Sunday. The Pistons have their own offensive problems to solve and are averaging 97 points while going 2-3 over the last five games, capped by a 106-101 loss at Dallas on Friday that left the team with a sour taste. "It doesn't feel good at all," Detroit coach Dwane Casey told reporters. "Again, we're not here to play close, you only get that in horseshoes and hand grenades. One thing, again, it's what, the 10th games we've lost by five points of less? Just making decisions down the stretch."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Wisconsin (Milwaukee), FS Detroit

ABOUT THE BUCKS (35-13): Milwaukee managed to make it a game after the poor first half on Sunday and was at least encouraged by the effort. "We've got to remember that we did battle back, we did fight back against a very good team that had momentum, that played well tonight," Bucks guard Malcolm Brogdon told reporters after the setback. "We did not play well tonight and we were still in the game." Superstar forward Giannis Antetokounmpo is shooting 57.5 percent from the floor on the season but was 8-of-22 from the floor against the Thunder while finishing with 27 points and 18 rebounds.

ABOUT THE PISTONS (21-27): Detroit is trying to hang around in the postseason race in the East and is kicking off a four-game homestand with Milwaukee after dropping three of the last four contests. "All games are critical," Casey told reporters. "Each time we walk out should be critical. It should be a sense of urgency, a sense of desperation. The hunger, the intensity on all of us, myself down to our equipment manager, should feel a sense of urgency. If not, we're in the wrong business." Star forward Blake Griffin is playing with a sense of urgency and is averaging 33.5 points over the last six games.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Bucks C Brook Lopez is 11-of-17 from 3-point range over the last three games.

2. Pistons PG Ish Smith (groin) missed the last four games and is questionable for Tuesday.

3. Milwaukee took the first three meetings this season by an average of 16 points.

PREDICTION: Bucks 112, Pistons 106

Thunder vs. Magic Preview and Predictions

Paul George was named an All-Star starter last week and is making himself into a dark horse MVP candidate with his play of late. George will try to lead the Oklahoma City Thunder to a sixth consecutive victory when they open a three-game road trip by visiting the Orlando Magic on Tuesday.

George controlled the game as the Thunder took down the top team in the Eastern Conference with a 118-112 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Sunday, finishing with 36 points on 12-of-21 shooting, eight 3-pointers, 13 rebounds and three assists. "He was doing everything - making 3s, midrange, dunking, floaters, he was all over the place," Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo told reporters of George. "He's been playing amazing. Down the stretch you know where the ball's going to go, it's going to go to Paul George. He closed the game out for them, and he played the right way all night." George could be in for another big night against the Magic, who are losers of three straight and are sliding out of contention in the Eastern Conference. "It's a lot of games this year that I feel like we handed away," Orlando forward Aaron Gordon told reporters after a 103-98 loss at Houston on Sunday. "We have a couple more home games coming up, so we have to take care of the crib and see if we can get on a winning streak."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Oklahoma, FS Florida (Orlando)

ABOUT THE THUNDER (31-18): George is averaging 31.4 points while shooting 54.3 percent from beyond the arc during the five-game winning streak but is taking just as much pride in his role on the other end of the floor. "We were sharp. We rotated. We helped," George told reporters of Oklahoma City's defense on Sunday. "That's what our defense is when we're number one. Tonight, we did do an excellent job of shrinking the floor and flying out to their shooters. We did a little of everything and it was enough for us to win." Former MVP Russell Westbrook recorded another triple-double with 13 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists on Sunday but suffered through a poor shooting night at 5-of-20 from the floor.

ABOUT THE MAGIC (20-30): Orlando is 1-6 in its last seven games with five of those losses coming by five or fewer points, and the team is well aware of its execution problems down the stretch. "We just gotta do it," center Nikola Vucevic told reporters. "Execute at the end, make stops at the end. That one win might get us over the hump." Vucevic collected 19 points and 17 rebounds on Sunday for his third double-double in four games but bemoaned his own lack of execution and aggressiveness after managing just two of those points in the second half.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Thunder C Steven Adams is shooting 66.9 percent from the floor in January.

2. Orlando SF Jonathon Simmons totaled two points on 1-of-7 shooting over the last two games.

3. The teams split the two-game series last season, with each protecting home court.

PREDICTION: Thunder 120, Magic 109

Chicago Bulls vs. Brooklyn Nets Preview and Predictions 2019-01-29

NBA Predictions 29th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/29/2019

The Brooklyn Nets' six-game winning streak is over, and they look to start a new stretch of victories when they host the Chicago Bulls on Tuesday. Brooklyn dropped a 112-104 decision in Boston on Monday for only the sixth loss in its last 25 games.

The Nets, who shot just 37.7 percent from the field, committed 17 turnovers in the loss to the Celtics and seemingly lacked spark. "I think we're a little fatigued right now," Brooklyn coach Kenny Atkinson told reporters. "We're on a back-to-back. This is the fatigue time in the NBA, so everybody's fatigued. We're feeling it, quite honestly." Chicago has dropped three straight games and 13 of its last 14 after falling 104-101 to visiting Cleveland on Sunday. "It's frustrating, but we just have to keep our heads up," Bulls power forward Lauri Markkanen told reporters after the loss to the NBA's worst team. "That's the beauty of this league. We have the next one coming up in two days. Nobody's going to feel sorry for us. We're going to show up for work and try to get better."

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, WGN (Chicago), YES (Brooklyn)

ABOUT THE BULLS (11-39): Victories are hard to come by for a young squad that hasn't shown improvement since Fred Hoiberg was fired as coach on Dec. 3 and replaced by Jim Boylen. Zach LaVine missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer against Cleveland as the squad dropped to 6-20 under Boylen's tutelage. "Still a work in progress," point guard Kris Dunn told reporters. "We had a coaching change, the lineup has been changing. We're just trying to stick with it, figure out what works for us. We're working on it each and every day."

ABOUT THE NETS (27-24): D'Angelo Russell scored 25 points against Boston, topping 20 for the 10th time in 13 games this month. Russell knocked down four 3-pointers for his eighth straight contest with at least two and has gone 35-for-75 from long range during the stretch. Shabazz Napier matched his season high of four 3-pointers while scoring 20 points but is just 9-for-29 overall while averaging 19 over his last two games.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Nets are 2-0 versus the Bulls this season and have won each of the last five meetings.

2. Brooklyn PG Spencer Dinwiddie (thumb) underwent surgery on Monday and could be sidelined up to six weeks.

3. Markkanen recorded 21 points and 15 rebounds against Cleveland for his sixth double-double of the season and the 20th of his career.

PREDICTION: Nets 113, Bulls 101

New Orleans Pelicans vs. Houston Rockets Preview and Predictions 2019-01-29

NBA Predictions 28th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/28/2019

James Harden looks to stretch his streak of consecutive 30-point efforts to 24 when the Houston Rockets host the New Orleans Pelicans on Tuesday. The star guard scored 40 points in Sunday's 103-98 win over the visiting Orlando Magic to reach 40 for the 12th time in the past 17 contests.

Harden has raised his play a level higher than his MVP campaign of a season ago and he helped Houston rally from a 16-point deficit to beat Orlando for its third consecutive victory. "James is going to be James," Houston point guard Chris Paul told reporters after the win. "I don't care who's on the court - me, anybody - he's going to be him. We need him to be him. That's why he's the MVP." The Pelicans dropped their last three games and they appear to be slipping out of the playoff race with star big man Anthony Davis (finger) sidelined. "We're not giving up on our season, if that's what everybody thinks," New Orleans coach Alvin Gentry told reporters after Saturday's 126-114 home loss to the San Antonio Spurs. "We've just got to keep plugging away, and some kind of way, we're going to get this thing turned around."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT, AT&T SportsNet Southwest (Houston)

ABOUT THE PELICANS (22-28): Davis will miss his fifth straight game and his absence has created an opportunity for Jahlil Okafor, who had season highs of 24 points and 15 rebounds in the loss to the Spurs. Okafor recorded three double-doubles in the four games Davis missed and made 36-of-48 shots while averaging 19.8 points, 10.8 rebounds and 2.8 blocked shots during the stretch. "Obviously it's fun to play and I was working really hard to try and stay as ready as I can," Okafor told reporters. "My teammates have been really great just supporting me from the bench, talking to me, understanding that I haven't played that much. They have been really patient with me."

ABOUT THE ROCKETS (29-20): Paul returned from a 17-game absence due to a hamstring injury and he recorded 12 points, six assists and three steals in 25 minutes against the Magic. "He looked good," Harden told reporters of Paul. "He looked like he had an extra pep in his step. He looked great and he made some big-time shots. It was good to see him back on the court." Austin Rivers moved back to the bench with Paul back and had just four points on 2-of-7 shooting and is only 21-of-67 over the past seven games.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The teams split this season's first two meetings, including the Pelicans rolling to a 131-112 win at Houston on Oct. 17.

2. New Orleans PF Julius Randle (ankle) is questionable after missing the previous two games.

3. Harden has scored 40 or more points on 18 occasions this season.

PREDICTION: Rockets 125, Pelicans 112

Suns vs. Spurs Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 01/28/2019

The San Antonio Spurs look to record their 11th consecutive home win over the Phoenix Suns when the teams clash on Tuesday. Phoenix hasn't won in San Antonio since registering a 105-101 triumph on Feb. 27, 2013.

Spurs shooting guard DeMar DeRozan (knee) is in jeopardy of missing his second straight game but the offense clicked without him in Sunday's 132-119 home win over the Washington Wizards. Seven players scored in double figures and San Antonio shot 57 percent from the field while scoring 130 or more points for the fifth time this season. The Suns have lost eight straight games and fell to 4-22 on the road with Sunday's 116-102 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. Rookie center Deandre Ayton, who averages 16.4 points and 10.6 rebounds, is expected to miss his sixth straight game due to an ankle injury.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, FS Arizona, FS Southwest (San Antonio)

ABOUT THE SUNS (29-22): Phoenix lost four games by 20 or more points during the latest slide, which is its second-longest of the season behind a 10-game skid from Nov. 25-Dec. 10. Standout shooting guard Devin Booker scored 21 points against the Lakers and is averaging 27.7 points over the past three games. Backup small forward Kelly Oubre Jr. had 14 points against Los Angeles for his 11th straight double-digit outing but was just 4-of-14 shooting and is 15-of-46 over the past three games.

ABOUT THE SPURS (28-22): Power forward LaMarcus Aldridge averaged 29 points and 10.5 rebounds in back-to-back wins over the New Orleans Pelicans and Wizards and figures to again be the focal point of the offense if DeRozan is held out. Aldridge scored 25 or more points in four of the past five games and he also tallied a career-high 56 points in a win over the Oklahoma City Thunder earlier this month. Small forward Davis Bertans (personal reasons) returned from a two-game absence to match his season best of five 3-pointers and score a season-high 21 points against Washington.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. SG Bryn Forbes is 8-of-13 from 3-point range against the Suns this season to help the Spurs win two of the first three meetings.

2. Phoenix PF Richaun Holmes (foot) returned from a four-game absence and had 12 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots versus Los Angeles for his third double-double of the season and ninth of his career.

3. San Antonio PG Derrick White is averaging 14.3 points on 17-of-25 shooting over the past three games.

PREDICTION: Spurs 121, Suns 97

76ers vs. Lakers Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 01/28/2019

All-Star center Joel Embiid is expected back in the lineup and swingman Jimmy Butler might be as well when the Philadelphia 76ers visit the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday. Embiid (back) sat out Saturday's 126-110 loss to the Denver Nuggets while Butler (wrist) missed the past three games.

The 76ers won nine of their past 13 games despite losing the opener of a four-game road trip while missing Embiid, Butler and forward Wilson Chandler (hamstring). "We did all right considering what we had to play," shooting guard JJ Redick told reporters after the setback. "Overall, we competed. We made mistakes. Young guys made mistakes. You move on." Lakers forward LeBron James (groin) has resumed practicing but is expected to miss his 17th straight contest since being injured against the Golden State Warriors on Christmas Day. Los Angeles is 6-10 without James after cruising to a 116-102 home win over the Phoenix Suns on Sunday.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE 76ERS (32-18): Veteran swingman Corey Brewer has been in the starting lineup with Butler sidelined and he had 20 points, six rebounds and four steals in 32 minutes in just his fourth game since joining the squad. "I know I can play basketball," Brewer told reporters after the strong effort. "I felt like I should have been in the league, but other GMs didn't want me." Rookie guard Landry Shamet received 28 minutes against Denver and recorded a season-high seven assists but was just 2-of-6 shooting while scoring eight points.

ABOUT THE LAKERS (26-24): Los Angeles is putting together a patchwork starting lineup with James and point guard Lonzo Ball (ankle) sidelined and the club also was without forward Kyle Kuzma (hip) against the Suns. Kuzma is hopeful of playing against Philadelphia and the Lakers would like to get another big outing from center Ivica Zubac, who had 24 points and a career-best 16 rebounds versus Phoenix. "He does a great job of getting himself open," point guard Rajon Rondo told reporters after Sunday's win. "Finding the right spots, getting into the creases where the ball can reach him. And he's able to finish. He has great touch around the rim with both hands and he's probably one of the strongest bigs in the game."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Lakers won nine of the past 15 meetings.

2. Los Angeles SG Josh Hart (knee) departed Sunday's contest and is questionable to play against the 76ers.

3. Chandler (hamstring) is expected to return after sitting out against Denver.

PREDICTION: 76ers 109, Lakers 102

Kent St. Golden Flashes vs. Western Michigan Broncos Preview and Predictions 2019-01-29

NCAAB Predictions 28th January 2019 By Charles Jay for Scores And Stats
by Charles Jay Scores & Stats on 01/28/2019

The Kent State Golden Flashes had rough circumstances under which to attempt an upset of Buffalo the other night, and it appears that they may have run out of gas near the end. Still, they are going to be a threat in the Mid-American Conference for the rest of the campaign.

The Western Michigan Broncos can't seem to get out of their own way, and even though their big man is showing some signs of regaining his form, they are losing by some alarming scores.

Can they stay within earshot of the visiting Golden Flashes on Tuesday night? They'll host the game at the Read Fieldhouse in Kalamazoo, MI.

TV: ESPN Plus, 7 PM ET. LINE: Check Intertops for the latest line

ABOUT KENT STATE: They knew they were going to be facing a rather fired-up Buffalo team that had just lost to Northern Illinois. But they still managed to give the 14th-ranked Bulls all they could handle. They did lead the game midway through the second half but then went cold in the final four minutes, opening the door for an 88-79 defeat. Jaylin Walker faced special attention from the Buffalo defense and finished below his season average with 21 points. Philip Whittington had a big game with 18 points and 13 rebounds. This brings Kent State's record to 15-5 straight-up (10-8 against the spread). But after coming back from a 17-point deficit and beating Toledo in overtime, it was more than commendable for them to come back with this effort. If you are looking for concerns in the KSU side, however, you may look at the defensive stats, as they are outside of the top 200 when it comes to defending against both two-pointers and three-pointers. And they are allowing opponents to pull down offensive rebounds almost 32% of the time, which places them outside the top 300 in that category. That means they are going to need to support Whittington, who has done his part, ranking 31st individually in Defensive Rebounding Percentage.

ABOUT WESTERN MICHIGAN: It was another day, another excruciating loss for WMU on Saturday, as they disappeared in the first half and never reappeared in a 93-67 loss to Eastern Michigan, which kept the pedal to the metal, using only six players for more than four minutes. The only player who seemed to shoot well at all for the Broncos was Seth Dugan, who scored 29 points on 12-for-16 from the field, to go with ten rebounds. They were just kind of drab in all areas, losing the rebounding battle, shooting 63% from the line, making five-of-18 from three-point range and committing 16 turnovers (compared to only seven for EMU). After their seventh-straight MAC loss to start the conference sked, they are now 6-14 straight-up and 8-9-2 against the number. Once again, WMU's inability to force turnovers is going to plague it here, as they are seventh from the bottom in that category, while Kent State is extra careful in taking care of the ball (only 16.3% of possessions with a turnover - average 11.5 per game). It would be nice if they could pull some three-pointers out of their hat, but they have hit only 31% for the season. So the hope, since Kent State has had its share of problems defending on the inside, is to turn to Dugan, who seems to have busted out of a slump with 52 points and 25 rebounds the last two games.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Going into the encounter with Buffalo, Jaylin Walker had scored 30 points in back-to-back games, and no one had done that for Kent State since 1984.

2. Kent State is 11-6-1 to the "over" this season, while Western Michigan has played 12 of 19 posted games over the total.

3. Western Michigan is currently the only team in the Mid-American Conference without a straight-up victory in league play (0-7).

PREDICTION: Kent State 77, Western Michigan 66

Tennessee Volunteers vs. South Carolina Gamecocks Preview and Predictions 2019-01-29

NCAAB Predictions 28th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/28/2019

South Carolina has been the biggest surprise during SEC play thus far and will try to send an even bigger shockwave through the league when it hosts top-ranked Tennessee on Tuesday. The Volunteers have won 14 straight contests, one shy of matching the longest streak in program history.

Tennessee hasn't lost since Nov. 23 against Kansas, and 11 of its 14 consecutive victories have come by double digits. The Vols' dominant streak has included four road wins, and they've captured six straight on opponents' home courts dating to last season. The Gamecocks struggled through the non-conference schedule but hit their stride in time for SEC play. They've lost two of their last three, including a 74-70 setback at Oklahoma State on Saturday, but have won four in a row at home.

TV: 6:30 p.m. ET, SEC Network

ABOUT TENNESSEE (18-1, 6-0 SEC): The Vols have put together an offensive juggernaut that is shooting 50.7 percent from the field, which leads the SEC and ranks third nationally. Grant Williams (20.2 points, 7.3 rebounds), who is the SEC's leading scorer, poured in 43 points in Wednesday's overtime win at Vanderbilt. Swingman Admiral Schofield (16.6 points) has extended his range to create a major matchup problem and Jordan Bone (13.1, 6.3 assists) ranks second in the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio (3.5).

ABOUT SOUTH CAROLINA (10-9, 5-1): The Gamecocks struggled to find an offensive identity early in the season but have blossomed in league play. Freshman A.J. Lawson (13.2 points) continues to lead the team in scoring by a narrow margin, but senior Hassani Gravett (11.4) has paced the team during SEC play with 15 points per contest. Chris Silva (13.1 points, 6.9 rebounds) has scored in double figures in four of the Gamecocks' six conference games, including a monster performance that included 32 points and 14 boards in a home win over Auburn last Tuesday.

TIP-INS

1. Tennessee's 6-0 start to SEC play is its best since 1981-82, when it won its first eight conference games.

2. South Carolina F Felipe Haase has made 16 consecutive free throws over his last five games.

3. The Vols are 11-0 when G Jordan Bowden (10.9 points) scores 10 or more points.

PREDICTION: Tennessee 79, South Carolina 69

Ohio Bobcats vs. Northern Illinois Huskies Preview and Predictions 2019-01-29

NCAAB Predictions 29th January 2019 By Charles Jay for Scores And Stats
by Charles Jay Scores & Stats on 01/29/2019

The Ohio Bobcats have just completed back-to-back wins in Mid-American Conference play, although observers who note their inconsistency shooting the ball are skeptical about their viability over the course of a full league season.

The Northern Illinois Huskies have recently accomplished something they hadn't done for a long time - beating a ranked team - and that may have proven to be a bit overwhelming for them in their last outing. Still, they can generate offense, which gives them an edge over many of their MAC compatriots.

Ohio and NIU clash on Tuesday night at the Convocation Center in DeKalb, IL.

TV: ESPN3, 5 PM ET. LINE: Check Intertops for the latest line

ABOUT OHIO: The Bobcats pushed their record to 3-4 in the MAC on Saturday with a 78-74 victory over Ball State. Jason Carter had 16 points and Gavin Block had 15, and despite surrendering ten triples, Ohio did force 17 turnovers. And it was another outstanding contribution off the bench for Ben Vander Plas, who pulled down a dozen rebounds. That's now 23 rebounds over the last two games for the 6-8 freshman. That was Ohio's second consecutive win, following the 81-76 victory over Western Michigan, and it raised their record to 11-8 straight-up. However, they are the least profitable Mid-American Conference team, with a 5-13 ATS mark. There is a sharp contrast in the numbers as far as shooting ability for Ohio and Northern Illinois. The Bobcats are outside of the nation's top 300 in both three-point shooting and free throw shooting, and 203rd in shooting from two-point range. Meanwhile, NIU is 23rd in three-point accuracy and 63rd in two-point shooting, so there is something of a gap to be made up. Ohio certainly hopes to do that with defense. They are especially proficient with regard to holding their opponents to one shot, ranking 15th in Defensive Rebounding Percentage, an effort that is spearheaded by Doug Taylor. They have also succeeded in making their opponents take shots in a hurry; Ohio's foes have had the ball in their possession for an average of 16.1 seconds for every trip down the floor, and that is the 11th shortest amount of time in the nation. NIU (214th in offensive possession length) doesn't appear to have a lot of interest in speeding up the game.

ABOUT NORTHERN ILLINOIS: After scoring a win over Buffalo, which was ranked 14th in the nation at the time, it might be expected that the Huskies could have a letdown in their next game. And maybe that was the case, although they did come on at the end to make it exciting in a 67-65 loss at Akron. Actually, NIU was ahead by as many as eleven points in the first half, but then the tide turned. In the end game, it was an intentional missed free throw by Eugene German that created the opportunity for the Huskies to get a tip-in to tie, but that missed as Akron escaped. German had 23 points, with Dante Thorpe scoring 16. And now NIU is 11-9 straight-up and 12-6 against the spread. They are tied with Toledo for first place in the MAC West division. German, it should be mentioned, is leading the team with 20.8 points per game. Levi Bradley, a senior from Milwaukee, has been a pretty steady performer across the board, ranking in the MAC's top 15 in the categories of scoring, field goal percentage, free throw percentage and three-point shooting percentage. Against Akron, German moved into tenth place on the school's all-time scoring list, and it also constituted the 18th straight time he has scored in double figures.

EXTRA POINTS

1. This game has experienced a time change from the original tip-off of 8 PM ET to 5 PM ET at the Convocation Center.

2. The teams met previously (January 5), as Northern Illinois came away with a 72-66 victory in overtime, behind a monster effort from Lacey James, who had 20 points and 14 rebounds.

3. NIU's win over Buffalo marked their first victory over a ranked team since February 3, 1973, when they beat Oral Roberts University, which was ranked 19th in the nation at the time.

PREDICTION: Northern Illinois 75, Ohio 60

Georgia Bulldogs vs. Arkansas Razorbacks Preview and Predictions 2019-01-29

NCAAB Predictions 28th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/28/2019

It would be unrealistic to expect Georgia to replicate its torrid shooting performance from Saturday when it travels to Arkansas on Tuesday, but the Bulldogs bring plenty of momentum into the matchup after a 98-88 home victory over Texas. Georgia, which has struggled at times offensively under first-year coach Tom Crean, hit 66.7 percent of its shots from the field - the fourth-best mark in school history - and finished 12-of-17 from 3-point range.

"I can't even tell you how huge the game was for us in terms of building confidence," Georgia sophomore forward Nicolas Claxton told reporters after the Bulldogs placed five players in double figures, led by junior guard Tyree Crump's 21 points (including a career-high six 3-pointers). The Razorbacks need a boost after losing for the fifth time in six games Saturday, a 67-64 defeat at No. 15 Texas Tech. A late Arkansas surge trimmed a double-digit deficit to three points with 26 seconds left, but an ill-timed turnover ended any upset hopes. "We were trying to get a quick score, and then we didn't even get a shot off, so that's disappointing," Arkansas coach Mike Anderson told the media afterward.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPNU

ABOUT GEORGIA (10-9, 1-5 SEC): Crump's big performance Saturday lifted his scoring average into double figures at 10.4 points per game. Georgia's frontcourt continues to lead the way for the Bulldogs as sophomore Rayshaun Hammonds averages 13.2 points and 6.4 rebounds, and Claxton contributes 12.8 points and SEC-leading 9.4 rebounds and 2.9 blocks per game. Claxton scored 16 of his 18 points Saturday in the second half while Hammonds finished with 14 points and nine rebounds.

ABOUT ARKANSAS (11-8, 2-4): Sophomore forward Daniel Gafford is the Razorbacks biggest offensive weapon, the tallest player on the roster (6-11) leading the team in scoring (16.2 points per game), rebounding (9.2) and field-goal percentage (65.9 percent). Freshman guard Isaiah Joe is second in the SEC in 3-point shooting (43.3 percent) while averaging 14.4 points per game. Gafford scored 14 points to lead Arkansas in Saturday's loss, after missing significant time in the first half with foul trouble.

TIP-INS

1. Slowing down the opposition has been an issue for both teams: Arkansas is 12th in the SEC in scoring defense (72.7 points per game allowed) while the Bulldogs are 14th (74.2).

2. The Razorbacks shot 4-for-19 from 3-point range Saturday.

3. Arkansas outlasted Georgia 80-77 in double-overtime last season in Athens, and at home owns a 10-3 advantage in the series.

PREDICTION: Arkansas 79, Georgia 77

North Carolina Tar Heels vs. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Preview and Predictions 2019-01-29

NCAAB Predictions 28th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/28/2019

North Carolina has found itself again after being blasted by Louisville at home, winning three games in a row and enjoying a week-long break that concludes with a visit to Georgia Tech on Tuesday. The No. 10-ranked Tar Heels moved into the pause from action after an impressive performance Jan. 21 against 11th-ranked Virginia Tech, a 103-82 triumph in which North Carolina made a season-best 16 shots from 3-point range.

Freshmen Coby White (27 points) and Nassir Little (23 points) led the charge against the Hokies, as the Tar Heels applied a valuable lesson that bit them in the 83-62 loss to Louisville on Jan. 12 - the worst home defeat in Roy Williams' 16 seasons as coach. "We had won two games in a row, and we played terribly against Louisville," Little told reporters after establishing a career high in points. "We just wanted to keep going, keep that energy going, keep that winning streak going." The Yellow Jackets are in the midst of a difficult stretch of their schedule, but grabbed attention by leading second-ranked Duke at halftime on the road Saturday before succumbing 66-53. "They fight, they scrap, they kick, they claw every possession," Georgia Tech coach Josh Pastner told the media after his team's first of three consecutive games against ranked opponents. "That's what we've done the entire year and I'm just really proud of our young men."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, RSN

ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA (15-4, 5-1 ACC): The Tar Heels are one of the most efficient offenses in the nation, ranking third nationally in scoring (88.1 points per game), third in assists per game (3.6) and fourth in rebound margin (10.2). Graduate guard Cameron Johnson leads a balanced scoring approach at 15.5 points per game, followed by White at 14.9 and senior forward Luke Maye at 14.4 points and 9.7 rebounds per game. White led the Tar Heels against Virginia Tech in points (27), rebounds (seven), assists (six) and steals (four).

ABOUT GEORGIA TECH (11-9, 3-4): The Yellow Jackets held Duke to 2-of-21 shooting from 3-point range Saturday and 23 points under the Blue Devils season average of points scored (89.3), with a defense ranking tied for 22nd nationally at 63.6 points per contest. Sophomore guard Jose Alvarado averages a team-best 13.5 points per game, while junior forward James Banks III scores 10.8 per contest on 57.4 percent shooting from the field. Alvarado and Banks combined for just 11 points Saturday as senior forward Abdoulaye Gueye finished with a team-high 14 points.

TIP-INS

1. Georgia Tech committed 11 of its 19 turnovers Saturday in the final 15 minutes, as a seven-point lead evaporated.

2. Maye ranks second in the ACC in rebounding and seventh in field-goal percentage (50 percent).

3. The Yellow Jackets have held their past two opponents (a win over Notre Dame and the Duke loss) to 9-of-51 shooting from 3-point range.

Virginia Cavaliers vs. NC State Wolfpack Preview and Predictions 2019-01-29

NCAAB Predictions 28th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/28/2019

Virginia looks to remain one of four one-loss teams in ACC play as it visits North Carolina State on Tuesday evening, The third-ranked Cavaliers are coming off an easy win at Notre Dame over the weekend, while the 22nd-ranked Wolfpack edged Clemson on Saturday.

Virginia silenced a sold-out Purcell Pavilion in South Bend, Ind., on Saturday afternoon by jumping to a 12-0 lead and making 16 of its first 26 field-goal attempts while holding Notre Dame scoreless for six-plus minutes to start the game. "I told the guys before if you're ready to play, you're ready to play regardless of when you get here," Virginia coach Tony Bennett told reporters after the 82-55 win. "On the road, to come out and be good defensively, our defense made them earn what they got." N.C. State, who has alternated wins and losses over its last seven games, snuck by the Tigers 69-67 as Braxton Beverly hit a game-winning 3-pointer with just one second remaining in regulation. "As soon as it left my hand, I knew I made it," Beverly told the media after the game in which Clemson's Marcquise Reed missed four free throws over the final 14 seconds to help set up Beverly's heroics.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN2

ABOUT VIRGINIA (18-1, 6-1 ACC): De'Andre Hunter scored a game-high 19 points and added seven rebounds as five Cavaliers reached double figures in scoring against Notre Dame. Kyle Guy, Virginia's leading scorer at 15 points per game, hit his average in what was a bit of a homecoming for him after he was named Indiana's Mr. Basketball in 2016. The Cavaliers shot 52.2 percent from the floor against the Fighting Irish, including 44.4 percent from long range, and won the rebounding battle 45-33 while only turning the ball over twice.

ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA STATE (16-4, 4-3): Beverly was just 2-of-9 from the field before hitting the game-winner and finished with 12 points, four rebounds and five assists. Markell Johnson scored a team-high 16 points in 23 minutes off the bench, while C.J. Bryce added 15 on 5-of-8 shooting, including a perfect 3-of-3 from 3-point range. Free-throw shooting proved to be the difference, as the Wolfpack made 12-of-13 while the Tigers made just 17-of-26.

TIP-INS

1. N.C. State leads the all-time series 82-65, but Virginia holds a six-game winning streak.

2. The Cavaliers rank first in the overall KenPom rankings as of Jan. 28.

3. Six different players have led the Wolfpack in scoring this season and five players are averaging in double figures during conference action.

Northwestern Wildcats vs. Maryland Terrapins Preview and Predictions 2019-01-29

NCAAB Predictions 28th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/28/2019

No. 24 Maryland looks to rebound from a rough week and find the form that led to seven straight victories after Christmas when it hosts Northwestern on Tuesday night in a Big Ten contest. The Terrapins had won six straight league games before losing by 14 at Michigan State last Monday and being outscored by 15 in the second half en route to a 78-67 setback against 6-14 Illinois on Saturday in New York.

"We were cruising a little bit and feeling good about ourselves," Maryland coach Mark Turgeon told reporters after Saturday's defeat. "We just weren't good when we needed to be good, and they were." The Terrapins, who beat Northwestern twice last season within 10 days, look to get back on track while leaning on junior guard Anthony Cowan Jr. (17.4 points, team-high 4.6 assists) and 6-10 sophomore forward Bruno Fernando (14.6, team-best 10.3 rebounds). The Wildcats will try to get their offense in gear again after scoring a season low in the 62-48 setback at Wisconsin on Saturday, shooting 29.6 percent from the floor with no one reaching double figures. "You don't want to panic. You got beat by a really good team on their home court," Northwestern coach Chris Collins said on the radio postgame show. "We've got to stay the course. We've got to get home, we've got to get right, and hopefully put ourselves in a position on Tuesday at Maryland to try and get a win."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1

ABOUT NORTHWESTERN (12-8, 3-6 Big Ten): Senior forward Vic Law leads the team in scoring (15.8), but has struggled the last three games - making just 5-of-29 from the field and averaging 7.7 points. Senior center Dererk Pardon adds 13.9 points per game on 61.1 percent shooting from the floor and leads the Wildcats in both rebounds (7.8) and blocks (24). Senior guard Ryan Taylor (12.0 points) is just 4-of-17 from the field the last two games while junior forward A.J. Turner (8.5 points, 3.5 assists) made just 6-of-21 shots in the past four contests and scored 4.3 per contest.

ABOUT MARYLAND (16-5, 7-3): Cowan has cooled off a bit, shooting 32.7 percent from the field the last four games, while Fernando boasts three straight double-doubles and 12 overall on the season after scoring 19 and grabbing 10 boards against Illinois. Freshman forward Jalen Smith averages 11.8 points on 50.6 percent shooting and freshman guard Aaron Wiggins (9.0 points) has drained 11-of-20 from 3-point range the last four games. Freshman guard Eric Ayala (8.6 points) tops the regulars in 3-point shooting (46.4 percent), but missed both tries against Illinois and did not score.

TIP-INS

1. Northwestern junior F Aaron Falzon has connected on 8-of-10 from 3-point range the last two games.

2. Fernando leads the Big Ten in field-goal percentage (67.4) and is second in blocks (2.0).

3. Maryland is second in the league in rebound margin (plus-10.0) and the Wildcats are 12th (minus-0.8).

Ball St. Cardinals vs. Buffalo Bulls Preview and Predictions 2019-01-29

NCAAB Predictions 28th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/28/2019

Buffalo was able to hold on to its national ranking for a 12th consecutive week heading into Tuesday's Mid-American Conference matchup with visiting Ball State. The No. 17 Bulls, who had been tied with the 1961-62 Bowling Green squad for the longest run in MAC history, will put another streak - 20 straight home wins - on the line when they face the Cardinals.

After drawing the ire of coach Nate Oats with several subpar efforts, one of which resulted in a loss last week at Northern Illinois, the Bulls responded to an early challenge from Kent State on Friday to avoid back-to-back league losses for the first time since January 2017. "Kent State is a hard place to play and they came out ready to go and punched us in the mouth early, but then our guys settled in and made the game a lot more difficult for them," Oats told the media. Dontay Caruthers was instrumental to the effort as the senior took turns guarding Kent State's Jaylin Walker, a 23.3-point per game scorer who had 10 points to help the Golden Flashes build a 25-12 lead after eight minutes but was then limited to 11 the rest of the way. Tayler Persons recorded his eighth 20-point game of the season and 27th of his career Saturday at Ohio, but it wasn't enough for the Cardinals to avoid a fifth loss in its last six games.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN3

ABOUT BALL STATE (11-9, 2-5 MAC): The Cardinals are 5-4 in true road games, but have been a much better team away from Muncie, Ind. James Whitford's squad, which is second in the league in field goal percentage (49.5) and free throw shooting (71.8), is shooting nearly 100 points better on the road and has enjoyed a plus-5.3 scoring margin on the road compared to minus-8.7 at home. The Cardinals, who have lost four league games by a total of 13 points, boast the top two shooters in the MAC in juniors Tahjai Teague (59.7 percent) and K.J. Walton (55.8) and have two players (Teague and Trey Moses) in the top 10 in rebounding.

ABOUT BUFFALO (19-2, 6-1 MAC): CJ Massinburg has scored 74 points over the last three contests, which is tied for his most over a three-game span. The senior, who is the No. 4 scorer in the MAC at 18.2 points - two spots ahead of Persons, also netted 74 from Nov. 29 to Dec. 6 last season. Massinburg has shot 52.4 percent from the field, 45.8 percent from beyond the arc and 82.6 percent from the line while averaging 6.7 rebounds and 3.0 assists over the last three games for the Bulls, who are tied for first in the MAC and were 13th in the nation with Toledo with 17.5 assists per contest entering Monday.

TIP-INS

1. The Bulls are first in the MAC and were ninth nationally in turnover margin (plus-4.5).

2. Buffalo has taken four of the last five games from Ball State, including an 83-63 victory in their only meeting last season, to forge a 15-15 tie in the series.

3. Persons, who is one of five players in Ball State history with 1,000 points and 300 assists, is second in the MAC to Walker in free throw shooting (82.4 percent).

Eastern Michigan Eagles vs. Central Michigan Chippewas Preview and Predictions 2019-01-29

NCAAB Predictions 29th January 2019 By Charles Jay for Scores And Stats
by Charles Jay Scores & Stats on 01/29/2019

The Eastern Michigan Eagles are coming off a rather easy victory last time out, and it was something that they really needed. They can do a lot of business on the boards, which is a good thing since they can't shoot straight much of the time.

The Central Michigan Chippewas didn't get to coast so much in their last outing. In fact, they had to launch an exhaustive comeback just to get close, but they ultimately missed out against Toledo.

EMU and CMU will get together on Tuesday night at the McGuirk Arena in Mount Pleasant, MI.

TV: ESPN Plus, 7 PM ET. LINE: Check Intertops for the latest line

ABOUT EASTERN MICHIGAN: It seemed simple, as EMU completed a 93-67 romp over Western Michigan on Saturday. Elijah Minnie, the 6-9 forward, had 29 points. James Thompson once again had an outstanding effort, with 14 points and 14 rebounds, and Paul Jackson had a dozen points and ten assists. It tied the widest margin of victory over their arch-rivals in the long-running series. They now have a record of 9-11 straight-up and 6-10 against the number. Eastern Michigan simply needs to shoot better. They are hitting 31.2% from three-point range, and they are likely to get shut down by Central Michigan, which has allowed opponents to shoot just 30.3% from downtown. It's a good thing that they aren't so dependent on the three-pointer, with 55.8% of their point production actually coming from two-pointers. Wherever they shoot from, the Eagles are going to have a real good chance to shoot again if they miss. They have been one of the strongest offensive rebounding teams in the country (15th to be exact). while Central Michigan has permitted its opponents to grab an offensive board 32.2% of the time. Oddly, EMU is 222nd in three-point defense, 260th in two-point defense, but third best in the nation in an area of defense which they actually don't have very much to do with, as their opponents have made just 61.8% of their free throws.

ABOUT CENTRAL MICHIGAN: They were down eleven points in the second half and still came back to make a game of it. And in fact, they had it tied with just a couple of minutes remaining. In the end, however, CMU came up short with a 76-72 loss to Toledo. If it was any consolation, they held one of the top three-point shooting teams in the country to just 5-for-25 from beyond the arc. With that loss, their third straight, Central is 14-6 straight-up and 9-8 against the pointspread. They are also 3-4 in the MAC. The guy to watch is Larry Austin, who is tops in the Mid-American Conference in assists and 21st in the nation in Assists Rate. Austin is also averaging 17.6 points per game and has a pretty good chance to break the school's one-season record for steals. On a team that gives very little in the way of playing time to its bench (just 20% of all minutes), Shawn Roundtree is the team leader in minutes played, with 34 per game. In this balanced attack, David DiLeo is the guy who keys most of the effort from downtown, and his three-point shooting percentage (39.4%) is best among the regulars. A discernible weakness here is that while Central Michigan is third in the nation in free throw attempts, they are hitting a very low percentage (64.4%, 324th nationally).

EXTRA POINTS

1. Eastern Michigan and Central Michigan first started playing basketball back in 1906. CMU holds the overall advantage in the series by a 100-93 margin.

2. EMU is tenth in the nation in offensive rebounds per game, with 14, and James Thompson is second individually with 4.4 per contest.

3. In the last meeting between these two teams (February 17), James Thompson had 22 points and 14 rebounds, with Elijah Minnie posting a double-double (13 points, ten rebounds) as EMU scored 44 second-half points en route to a 72-67 road victory.

Toledo Rockets vs. Miami (OH) Red Hawks Preview and Predictions 2019-01-29

NCAAB Predictions 28th January 2019 By Charles Jay for Scores And Stats
by Charles Jay Scores & Stats on 01/28/2019

The Toledo Rockets and Miami of Ohio RedHawks have respective offensive blueprints that might look very unusual to people who are studying the numbers.

While Toledo is a very proficient team from three-point range, they don't shoot it from there as much as you'd expect. And while Miami shoots an awful lot of its shots from downtown, they don't do it as well as you'd expect from a team that placed a big emphasis on it.

Suddenly the RedHawks are hot, and they'll play host to Toledo on Tuesday night at Millett Hall in Oxford, O.

TV: ESPN Plus, 7 PM ET. LINE: Check Intertops for the latest line

ABOUT TOLEDO: There were some concerns about how well the Rockets could bounce back from the devastating loss to Kent State, in which they blew a 17-point second half lead and lost in overtime last Tuesday. But even though had some anxiety, they did get back in the win column with a 76-72 victory over a capable Central Michigan squad on Saturday. It was another nice game for 6-11 center Luke Knapke, who had 21 points and 13 rebounds, and he's been a go-to guy lately, shooting 25-of-38 from the field with 59 points and 29 rebounds in his last three contests. Jaelan Sanford added 22 points against CMU, but like his other teammates, for the most part, he bricked from long range, hitting just two of 10. As a team, the Rockets went 5-for-25, a big comedown, when you consider that they’re one of the top 20 teams in the nation, hitting 39.1% from beyond the arc. Toledo is now 16-4 straight-up and 11-8 against the number, and they are now back over the .500 mark (4-3) in MAC play. This team could spell trouble for a lot of others if Knapke can continue to hit the boards with some aplomb because Willie Jackson is already a demon on the glass. Jackson has hit double figures in rebounds eleven times this season, and he ranks 11th in the country in Defensive Rebounding Percentage.

ABOUT MIAMI OF OHIO: The successful turnaround at Miami continues. After losing their first four games in MAC competition, they have come back with three consecutive wins, and they didn't leave a lot of room for doubt last time out against Bowling Green, flattening the Falcons 67-53 behind 25 points from Nike Sibande, the team's leading scorer, who woke up in a big way after having just thirteen points combined over the previous two games. Sibande also had seven rebounds, and that was symbolic of an effort where the RedHawks had an advantage over the nation's top rebounding team on both the offensive AND defensive boards. They also held Bowling Green to a dismal 9-for-30 from two-point range. So now Miami is 11-9 straight-up and 9-9 against the pointspread. Since the RedHawks launch 47.3% of their attempts from three-point range, it may be useful to take a look at what kind of form their top shooters have been in. Sibande is just 4-of-15 from the arc in his last three games, while Dalonte Brown has gone 6-of-15 in the last six contests. Darrian Ringo doesn't shoot the three that often, but he's 2-for-12 in his last four games.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Of their 18 games that have been posted on the board, Miami has played twelve of them under the total, and perhaps that's not surprising since they have an average possession length of 19.6 seconds (344th in the country) and an Adjusted Tempo that is 310th.

2. There's a big difference in free throw shooting prowess here; while Toledo ranks fourth in the country at the line (78.8%), Miami is #225 (68.8%). Incarnate Word leads the nation at 80.4%.

3. One stunning statistic is that the ratio of free throw attempts to field goal attempts on the part of Toledo's opponents is just 23%, which is the fourth lowest in the country.

PREDICTION: Miami of Ohio 70, Toledo 67

Wisconsin Badgers vs. Nebraska Cornhuskers Preview and Predictions 2019-01-29

NCAAB Predictions 28th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/28/2019

After building a solid early resume with a 10-1 showing against a challenging non-conference slate and rebounding from a tough start to Big Ten play, Nebraska appeared poised to enjoy one of its most successful seasons in program history as recently as two weeks ago. The Cornhuskers' fortunes have taken a dramatic turn for the worst since then, and they will be forced to play the rest of the way without one of their linchpins starting Tuesday when they host Wisconsin.

Nebraska rebounded from a 1-3 start in league action by beating Penn State and Indiana, but a 70-64 loss to No. 5 Michigan State on Jan. 17 ended a school-record 20-game home winning streak. A setback at Rutgers followed four days later, but the Cornhuskers' once-promising campaign might have reached a crossroads when senior forward Isaac Copeland was lost for the season to a torn left ACL during Saturday's 70-60 home loss to Ohio State. The resumption of conference play did not agree with the Badgers, as Wisconsin dropped three of four to begin the month. The Badgers ended that forgettable run by handing No. 6 Michigan its first loss on Jan. 19 and earned their third straight win Saturday, riding Ethan Happ's second triple-double of the season to a 62-46 triumph over Northwestern

TV: 8 p.m. ET, Big Ten Network

ABOUT WISCONSIN (14-6, 6-3 Big Ten): Happ (18.9 points, 10.4 boards, 5.2 assists) finished with 13 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists while adding two blocks and two steals against the Wildcats. "He's a nightmare ... he's like a point guard at the center position. He brings it up, he can drive you from the perimeter, he can get you from the low-post, he's a terrific passer, he's great on the offensive glass, he's great defensively, he's got great instincts and hands for steals and blocked shots. ... He is a phenomenal player and he impacts winning in so many ways," Northwestern coach Chris Collins said. Sophomore guards Brad Davison (10.7 points) and D'Mitrik Trice (14.2) took full advantage of the defensive attention Happ drew Saturday, tying for game-high scoring honors with 18 points apiece.

ABOUT NEBRASKA (13-7, 3-6): Copeland was the Cornhuskers' second-leading scorer (14.0 points), rebounder (5.4) and shot blocker (0.9); he will likely be replaced in the starting lineup by former offensive line recruit Tanner Borchardt, who has never scored more than eight points or logged more than 25 minutes in a game. The absence of Copeland figures to place even more pressure on James Palmer Jr. (19.4 points, second in the Big Ten) and Glynn Watson Jr. (13.5 points), who combined for 37 points on 12-of-27 shooting Saturday while their teammates totaled 23 points on 9-for-31 from the floor. After posting a career-high 22 points and a season-high four blocks against Penn State on Jan. 10, junior forward Isaiah Roby has totaled 28 points and five blocks in the four games since.

TIP-INS

1. Wisconsin owns an 8-4 edge in the series since Nebraska joined the conference in 2011-12, but the Cornhuskers have won three of the last four meetings.

2. Happ, who is the only player in the country averaging at least 17 points, 10 rebounds and four assists, is responsible for two of the three triple-doubles in school history (Josh Gasser, Jan. 23, 2011).

3. Since Big Ten play resumed on Jan. 2, the Cornhuskers have been outrebounded by at least nine in five of the seven games.

Kansas Jayhawks vs. Texas Longhorns Preview and Predictions 2019-01-29

NCAAB Predictions 28th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/28/2019

Kansas coach Bill Self wasn't happy about his Jayhawks' second-half struggles Saturday at No. 6 Kentucky but didn't seemed too concerned after the fact. With goals set on a 15th consecutive Big 12 regular-season championship, No. 12 Kansas returns to conference play Tuesday at Texas, a team they have dominated in recent years.

The Jayhawks scored just five field goals over the final 10 minutes, shooting a season-low 36.5 percent from the floor for the game, which resulted in a 71-63 loss in the Big 12/SEC Challenge despite yet another double-double (20 points and 15 rebounds) from Dedric Lawson. "There were too many errors and too many naked possessions offensively where we didn't get anything out of it and our shot selection was poor," Self said afterward. "If we'd won this game, I'd be happy going home, but trust me, it doesn't mean that much, it's not going to affect us in any way, shape or form preparing for our next game." Kansas, which is tied with Kansas State at 5-2 atop the Big 12 standings, held off a late run and edged Texas 82-80 two weeks ago in Lawrence behind 21 points and five 3-pointers from Lagerald Vick and 20 points and three steals from Marcus Garrett for its 10th straight win in the series. Despite a career-high 19 points by freshman guard Courtney Ramey, the Longhorns lost their second straight and for the fifth time in six tries, dropping a 98-88 decision at Georgia on Saturday in the Big 12/SEC Challenge.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT KANSAS (16-4, 5-2 Big 12): The Jayhawks are the only team in the Big 12 with two players ranked in the top eight in scoring; Lawson is second at 19.5 points while Vick is eighth at 14.8 points. Combined with his previous effort - 29 points and 15 rebounds against Iowa State - Lawson upped his career averages to a double-double with 17.9 points per game and 10.0 rebounds between his time at Memphis and Kansas. Garrett is averaging 13.8 points in his last four games, including a career-high 20 versus Texas - and his 1.8 steals per game are second in the Big 12 - while Vick is second the Big 12 in 3-point field goal percentage at 45.5 and 3-point field goals made at three per game.

ABOUT TEXAS (11-9, 3-4): The Longhorns allowed Georgia to shoot 66.7 percent from the floor, including 12-of-17 beyond the arc, while Ramey (6.4 points, 36.7 percent shooting) converted a career-high 7-of-15 from the floor, including a career-best 5-of-8 clip from 3-point range, and added five assists in a career-high 38 minutes. "We're at a crossroads right now," forward Dylan Osetkowski told the Austin American-Statesman. "It's cliche, and it's what everybody says. But we've really got to figure out what kind of team we want to be, how we want to finish off conference." Senior guard Kerwin Roach II leads Texas in scoring at 14.3 points - 10th in the Big 12 - and freshman forward Jaxson Hayes (10.5 points, 5.1 rebounds) leads the Big 12 in field-goal percentage at 74.3 percent and blocked shots at 2.7 per contest.

TIP-INS

1. The Jayhawks lead the all-time series 32-8, including a 10-6 record in games in Austin.

2. Kansas is 88-11 following a loss in the Bill Self era, including 3-0 this season. Since 2013-14, the Jayhawks are 38-3 following a loss - the resulting 88.9 win percentage is best in college basketball.

3. Lawson, a Wooden Award Midseason nominee, has six double-doubles in his last eight games, leads the Big 12 in double-doubles (14) and rebounding (11.1) and is ninth in shooting percentage (52 percent) and blocks (1.1).

Ohio St Buckeyes vs. Michigan Wolverines Preview and Predictions 2019-01-29

NCAAB Predictions 28th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/28/2019

Fifth-ranked Michigan looks to move into a tie for first place in the Big Ten standings when it hosts Ohio State on Tuesday. The Wolverines bounced back from their first loss of the season against No. 23 Wisconsin on Jan. 19 with back-to-back wins, including a 69-46 road victory against Indiana on Friday, to pull within a 1/2 game of eighth-ranked Michigan State, and hope to continue their stellar defensive play by extending their home winning streak to 20 games.

Michigan limited the Hoosiers to 27.6 percent shooting from the floor en route to its biggest margin of victory ever in Bloomington and hopes to cap off a successful January by holding its seventh opponent to fewer than 65 points this month. Ohio State notched its first win in almost four weeks when it took down Nebraska 70-60 on Saturday. The Buckeyes had dropped five straight games, including the previous three contests by double digits, before righting the ship against the Cornhuskers, and hope to add a marquee win to their NCAA Tournament resume by knocking off a Top 5 team for the third time in just over a year. "It's no secret we're playing an elite team that's having a special season," Ohio State coach Chris Holtmann told reporters. "We're looking forward to a great challenge."

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN2

ABOUT OHIO STATE (13-6, 3-5 Big Ten): Luther Muhammad stepped up in a big way for the Buckeyes as the freshman guard racked up a career-high 24 points to go along with six rebounds and three steals in the vital win against Nebraska. C.J. Jackson added 10 points and four assists against the Cornhuskers to finish in double figures for the 12th time in 14 games while moving within six assists of reaching 300 for his career. Andre Wesson also scored 10 points and Musa Jallow tallied five points and four rebounds in place of Kyle Young (7.3 points, 4.8 rebounds), who went down with a stress fracture in his leg on Jan. 22.

ABOUT MICHIGAN (19-1, 8-1): Iggy Brazdeikis led the way with 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the floor and grabbed seven rebounds in the win against Indiana to post the sixth 20-point game of his career. Zavier Simpson produced 12 points, six rebounds and five assists while Jon Teske continues to be one of the most improved players in the Big Ten as he finished with 11 points and a pair of blocks against the Hoosiers. Brazdeikis was named the Big Ten Freshman Player of the Week for the fourth time this season, which is a program record, after averaging 19 points and nine rebounds in the wins over Minnesota (59-57) and Indiana.

TIP-INS

1. Michigan has won 33 of its last 35 games dating back to last season.

2. Ohio State F Kaleb Wesson needs seven rebounds to reach 300 for his career.

Kentucky Wildcats vs. Vanderbilt Commodores Preview and Predictions 2019-01-29

NCAAB Predictions 28th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/28/2019

Kentucky is starting to get it together with defense taking center stage as it vies for a season sweep of Vanderbilt on Tuesday in an SEC game in Nashville, Tenn. The No. 6 Wildcats are coming off a 71-63 victory over No. 12 Kansas on Saturday for their sixth straight win and are yielding only 61.3 points per game during that span after permitting an average of 70.0 in the first 13 contests.

"I'd say the biggest change as far as us maturing is just our enthusiasm for defense," Kentucky senior forward Reid Travis told reporters. "We're starting to celebrate stops. We're starting to celebrate guys trying to shut down guys and things like that. ...'' The Commodores nearly upset No. 1 Tennessee on Wednesday but fell 88-83 in overtime before extending their losing streak to seven with an 86-55 setback at Oklahoma on Saturday. "You always fear after an emotional game how your team is going to respond," Vanderbilt Bryce Drew told reporters. "For the first 10 to 12 minutes (against Oklahoma), I thought we responded well. After that, we couldn't guard them one-on-one and couldn't hang on to the ball enough to keep it close." The Wildcats won the first meeting 56-47 on Jan. 12 with freshman guards Ashton Hagans and Keldon Johnson leading the comeback victory with 15 points apiece as the teams combined to shoot 11-for-41 from 3-point range.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT KENTUCKY (16-3, 5-1 SEC): Johnson (team-high 14.6 points, 5.3 rebounds) won his third SEC Freshmen of the Week honor after averaging 12.0 points and 7.5 rebounds versus Kansas and No. 21 Mississippi State, including his third double-double of the season with 15 and 10 on Saturday. Sophomore forward PJ Washington (12.7 points, club-most 8.1 rebounds) scored 21 points versus Mississippi State and 20 against Kansas - totaling 20 or more in back-to-back games for the first time in his career - while grabbing 13 boards Saturday. Travis (12.8 points, 7.0 rebounds) recorded 18 points and 12 rebounds versus Kansas - the first time since John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins and Patrick Patterson in 2009-10 that the Wildcats have had three players register a double-double in a game.

ABOUT VANDERBILT (9-10, 0-6): Sophomore guard Saben Lee averages a team-best 13.4 points after scoring 24 versus Oklahoma and 21 against Tennessee while averaging six rebounds and five assists in those games. Freshman forward Aaron Nesmith (9.9 points, 5.7 rebounds) leads the team at 14.3 points in SEC games, including a career-high 24 versus Tennessee. Forward Simisola Shittu (13.1 points, club-most 7.3 boards) paces SEC freshmen in rebounding but has averaged only 4.6 over his last five contests.

TIP-INS

1. The Wildcats are allowing 67.3 points per game with only Florida (61.5) and Missouri (66.7) yielding fewer among SEC teams.

2. The Commodores are one of three schools (Princeton, UNLV) to have made a 3-point basket in every game since the inception of the shot in 1986-87.

3. Kentucky freshman G Tyler Herro (13.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 91.1 percent free throws) leads the team at 14.6 points per conference game.

Mississippi State Bulldogs vs. Alabama Crimson Tide Preview and Predictions 2019-01-29

NCAAB Predictions 28th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/28/2019

The SEC enters Tuesday's action with three teams at 3-3 in league play and two of them will meet in Alabama, where the Crimson Tide host 21st-ranked Mississippi State. The Bulldogs have won three of their last four and the one loss in that span was at No. 6 Kentucky.

They bounced back from that result in fine fashion with a 92-84 victory over then-No. 15 Auburn on Saturday, shooting 50.9 percent in their best offensive effort in SEC action. "We were playing as a team," senior guard Quinndary Weatherspoon told reporters after tying his season high with 27 points. "I'm excited about that and I'm excited about the win." Alabama stepped out of conference play to take part in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge but fell short at Baylor 73-68 on Saturday. Senior guard Riley Norris hit all six of his shot attempts - four from beyond the arc - en route to a season-high 16 points and the Crimson Tide also shot 50.9 percent from the floor, but they had one basket in a span of over five minutes during a difficult stretch run.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, SEC Network

ABOUT MISSISSIPPI STATE (15-4, 3-3 SEC): Weatherspoon drilled 4-of-5 from 3-point range against Auburn while reaching the 20-point mark for the first time in conference play, while junior guard Lamar Peters ran the show with 16 points and a season-high 10 assists. "I just wanted to let the game come to me," Peters, who also made four 3-pointers, told reporters. "Not just force shots, play under control and be a point guard for my team." Freshman forward Reggie Perry posted his second career double-double in the win with 10 points and 11 rebounds in just 19 minutes and he's averaging seven boards per game in SEC action.

ABOUT ALABAMA (12-7, 3-3): The Crimson Tide entered last weekend ranked second in the SEC in rebounding margin (plus-6.7), but the Bears beat them on the boards 35-31, including a 16-9 advantage on the offensive glass. "We didn't play our best basketball," coach Avery Johnson told the media. "We got inside their zone and tried to make plays at the rim but we just couldn't get the ball in the basket. I don't like to see us get outrebounded and we did. We had loose balls on the floor that Baylor came up with." Freshman guard Kira Lewis Jr. leads the team in scoring (13.9) and assists (2.8) while senior forward Donta Hall (11.3 points) ranks third in the SEC in both rebounding (8.9) and field-goal percentage (61.2).

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Crimson Tide G John Petty had two points on 1-of-7 shooting in the loss to Baylor after scoring a total of 45 points on 17-of-28 from the floor over his previous two games.

2. Bulldogs F Aric Holman had four blocked shots Saturday and ranks third in the SEC with 2.3 per game.

3. Alabama won 10 of 11 meetings before Mississippi State triumphed 67-63 in the second matchup last season behind 18 points from G Nick Weatherspoon.

Pittsburgh Panthers vs. Clemson Tigers Preview and Predictions 2019-01-29

NCAAB Predictions 29th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/29/2019

Two teams looking to reverse their recent slides square off Tuesday, when Clemson hosts Pittsburgh in an ACC matchup. The Tigers have won each of the last four meetings in the all-time series.

Clemson has lost two straight overall contests and five of its last six, including a crushing 69-67 defeat at No. 22 North Carolina State on Saturday in which the host hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to hold off a late surge. The Tigers will try to put that game behind them quickly after twice squandering six-point leads in the final minute. The Panthers made a splash with home wins over Louisville and Florida State early in the ACC slate, but they've dropped three in a row and are coming off a 66-51 setback at Louisville on Saturday. Pitt has lost 18 consecutive road games, including 15 straight in conference play.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPNU

ABOUT PITTSBURGH (12-8, 2-5 ACC): The Panthers are in full rebuilding mode in coach Jeff Capel's first season, as four of their top five scorers are newcomers to the program. A trio of freshmen - Xavier Johnson (16.2 points, 4.4 assists), Trey McGowens (13.6 points) and Au'diese Toney (9.4, six rebounds) -accounts for 52.7 percent of the team's scoring output. Three-point specialist Jared Wilson-Frame (11.4 points) also averages double digits, but the Panthers' strength is at the defensive end - they hold opponents to 39.1 percent shooting overall and 29.1 percent from 3-point range.

ABOUT CLEMSON (11-8, 1-5): The Tigers have been solid defensively for most of the season, but their offensive output has dropped off considerably in ACC play. Marcquise Reed (19.3 points, 5.6 rebounds) still is putting up big numbers in conference games, but he missed four straight free throws down the stretch against N.C. State. Elijah Thomas (13.5 points, 7.8 rebounds) has matched his overall numbers in league play, but Shelton Mitchell (11.5 points) has been ice cold, shooting just 26.9 percent overall - including 2-for-19 from beyond the arc.

TIP-INS

1. Reed is the only player in the nation averaging at least 19 points, 5.5 rebounds, three assists and two steals.

2. Pittsburgh forces 16.2 turnovers per game - third-most in the ACC - and averages 19.9 points off turnovers.

3. Johnson and McGowens have combined to go 184-for-230 from the foul line, with the former leading the ACC in made free throws (93) and the latter ranking second (91).

Nevada Wolf Pack vs. UNLV Runnin' Rebels Preview and Predictions 2019-01-29

NCAAB Predictions 28th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/28/2019

Seventh-ranked Nevada holds a one-game lead in the Mountain West heading into Tuesday night's contest at UNLV. But even though the in-state north versus south rivalry can get quite heated at times, Nevada coach Eric Musselman told reporters he won't change his team's approach heading into the game against the Runnin' Rebels.

"I know it's not just another game because it's in state," Musselman told reporters. "I understand how our alumni feel. I understand how our boosters feel. I understand how our former players feel. I understand how our community feels. We want to win the game too. But, for me, every game is the Super Bowl. Every game is the seventh game of the World Championship." The Wolf Pack have won four of the last five meetings with UNLV, including a 79-74 victory in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West Tournament last March, and are winners of three straight matchups at the Thomas & Mack Center. They will be facing a UNLV team that enters the contest in a three-way tie for second place with Utah State and Fresno State, and hopes to rebound from a 94-77 loss at San Diego State on Saturday. "We have a dynamic Reno team coming in that's top 10 in the country," Rebels coach Marvin Menzies told reporters. "It's another opportunity to grow and get better and get one in the win column."

TV: 11 p.m. ET, ESPN2

ABOUT NEVADA (19-1, 6-1 Mountain West): The Wolf Pack come in off arguably their finest performance of the season, a 100-60 blowout of Colorado State that saw Nevada outscore the Rams 58-25 in the second half, shoot 56.1 percent from the floor overall - including 13-of-27 from 3-point range - and finish with a 35-5 edge in points off turnovers. "It feels real good," senior swingman Caleb Martin, who finished with 18 points and was 6-of-12 beyond the arc last time out, told reporters. "We've been feeling like we've needed a game like this for a long time. We knew we were capable of playing a game like this." Senior forward Jordan Caroline leads the team in scoring (18.7) and rebounding (9.7) followed by Caleb Martin (18.1), junior guard Jazz Johnson (11.0) and senior point guard Cody Martin (10.9) - twin brother of Caleb who also leads the league in assists (5.2).

ABOUT UNLV (11-8, 5-2): The Rebels are tied with Fresno State and Utah State for second place and a win would go a long ways to calming some of the natives around the program who have gotten restless thanks to home losses to Loyola Marymount (61-50) and Valparaiso (72-64) and an embarrassing 106-88 road loss at Air Force. Senior guard Kris Clyburn leads a balanced offense (13.1 points), but is shooting just 42.6 percent from the floor and 33.3 percent from 3-point range. Joel Ntambwe, a smooth-shooting, athletic 6-8 freshman forward, has been the team's best player averaging 12.8 points and 6.2 rebounds while also shooting 42.3 percent from 3-point range, and sophomore guard Amauri Hardy is also averaging in double figures (12.4).

TIP-INS

1. Caroline has 41 career double-doubles, including 11 this season.

2. Caleb Martin, the reigning Mountain West Player of the Year, has scored 20 or more points in the second half of a game five times this season.

3. Nevada's 40-point victory over Colorado State was its largest margin of victory under Musselman, who is now 100-30 in four seasons in Reno.

PREDICTION: Nevada 92, UNLV 72

Play on: OVER 2 -140

Take Over the Total in the match between Brighton and Hove Albion and Fulham. Brighton (7-5-11) looks to bounce-back from a 2-1 loss at Manchester United in their last English Premier League match on January 19th. The Seagulls have seen 30 combined goals scored in their twelve EPL matches this season. Furthermore, in their nine road matches against teams not in the top-six in the league, they have seen 24 combined goals scored with them averaging 1.0 Goals-Per-Game over that stretch. Fulham (3-5-15) looks to bounce-back from a 2-1 loss at home to Tottenham in their last EPL match back on January 20th. The Cottagers are last in the league by allowing 51 goals this season. They have seen 34 combined goals scored in their 11 matches at home this year. Additionally, Fulham has seen 25 combined goals scored in their nine home matches against the bottom-fourteen sides in the EPL. This game should see at least two combined goals scored (for a push at 2.0) with a good chance that at least one more goal is scored. Take the Over. Best of luck — Frank.

My money is on the Bobcats to cash in an easy cover here as a road dog against the Huskies. These are two very evenly matched teams, but I just think we are getting value here with Ohio due to the fact that they are 1-7 ATS on the road and Northern Illinois is 6-1 ATS at home. Bobcats have covered 4 of the last 5 in the series and will do it again tonight. Bet Ohio +5!

Scott "The Bulldog" Rickenbach NHL Game #77 Tuesday Free Pick Winnipeg Jets Money Line (+) @ Boston Bruins @ 7:05 ET - Normally a back to back situation for one team automatically favors the other team. The key word in that statement is normally! Tuesday features one of the exceptions. The reason is that players have a lot of rust to work off when they first come back from the All Star break. The Jets, in that regard, actually have an edge in this match-up since they were in action last night. Winnipeg fell short in a 3-1 loss on the road versus the red hot Flyers. Not only is Winnipeg 7-2 this season after scoring 1 goal or less in their prior game, the Jets are also 8-3 this season when off a loss by a margin of defeat of multiple goals. The Jets will be ready for this game and will be the more polished team with their passes and overall puck-handling skills while the Bruins certainly could be a little sloppy especially early on in this game. Boston hasn't played since the 19th. Also, the Bruins have lost 4 of their last 6 games including 3 of their last 4 on home ice. The Jets are off back to back losses and they have NOT lost 3 straight games this ENTIRE season! Boston has lost 4 of 5 games this season when playing with 3 or more days of rest between games and, in this case, the Bruins are playing their first game in 10 days! The big road dog takes advantage. Free Pick WINNIPEG

NBA | Thunder vs Magic
Play on: Thunder -5 -110 at BMaker

My 1* Free Play is on the OKC Thunder (7:05 EST).
The Thunder enter off a 118-112 home win over the Bucks, while the Magic fell 103-98 at Houston on Sunday. I think that OKC keeps the foot on the gas here in this favorable non-conference road game.
The Thunder come in with plenty of momentum with five straight victories. Overall OKC is 14-11 ATS on the road. The Thunder average 114.2 PPG and they allow 109.3. Russell Westbrook averages 21.6 points, 10.8 boards, 10.7 assists and 2.34 steals per game, while Paul George contributes 27.1 points, 8.1 boards and 2.31 steals per game.
The Magic come in on the other end of the spectrum having lost three straight. Orlando is 11-11 ATS at home and it averages 104 PPG, while conceding 107.6. Nikola Vucevic remains a force with 20.6 points, 12 boards and 3.8 assists per night.
I’ll point out though that Orlando is a poor 1-3-1 ATS in its last five home games vs. teams with a winning road record, while OKC is 4-1 ATS in its last five after allowing 100 points or more in its previous outing.
As stated off the top, I’m not predicting a letdown here (yet!) from the red hot Thunder. Consider OKC on Tuesday night.
Good luck…Larry

#NHL FREE PICK FROM MIKE LUNDIN
The Philadelphia Flyers entered the All Star break on a 3-game winning streak, and they hit the ground running when they resumed their schedule Monday by beating the visiting Winnipeg Jets 3-1.
The Flyers will play on no rest here at Madison Square Garden the following night, but I still think they'll have enough gas left in the tank to take care of business against a Rangers team that has lost three of its last 10 at home and five straight meetings with Philly.
The Rangers will be playing for the first time since Jan. 19 when they claimed a 3-2 victory as a +220 underdog to the Bruins at Boston. They're however just 7-21 in their last 28 games playing on three or more days rest and this is a good enough price to back the visitors.
Free pick on Philadelphia Flyers.

NBA | Bulls vs Nets
Play on: Nets -7 -103 at pinnacle

Nets
The Brooklyn Nets' six-game winning streak is over, and they look to start a new stretch of victories when they host the Chicago Bulls on Tuesday. Brooklyn dropped a 112-104 decision in Boston on Monday for only the sixth loss in its last 25 games.
Chicago has dropped three straight games and 13 of its last 14 after falling 104-101 to visiting Cleveland on Sunday. Victories are hard to come by for a young squad that hasn't shown improvement since Fred Hoiberg was fired as coach on Dec. 3 and replaced by Jim Boylen.
The Nets are 2-0 versus the Bulls this season and have won each of the last five meetings.
Bulls are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 games playing on 1 days rest. Nets are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games vs. a team with a losing straight up record. Bulls are 0-5 ATS in the last 5 meetings.

The Chicago Bulls are catching too many points tonight in Brooklyn given the tough situation for the Nets. They’ll be playing for a second consecutive day after a 104-112 loss in Boston last night. They won’t have much left in the tank for the Bulls tonight. And the injury list for the Nets has gotten longer recently as they’ve lost Spencer Dinwiddie, Jared Dudley, Allen Crabbe and Caris LeVert. The Dinwiddie loss is a huge one because he’s probably their most important player, and he was the latest Net to go down with injury. Brooklyn is 3-13 ATS in its last 16 home games off two straight division games. The Nets are 2-9 ATS in their last 11 games playing on zero rest. Give me the Bulls.

Play on: Pelicans +11½ -109 at GTBets

Take the New Orleans Pelicans plus the points versus the Houston Rockets. New Orleans (22-28) has lost three straight games with their 126-114 loss to San Antonio on Saturday. The Pelicans are dealing with a host of injuries right now with Anthony Davis and Nikola Mirotovic both on the shelf. But New Orleans has covered the point spread in 7 of their last 9 games after a double-digit loss. The Pelicans are also 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 road games against teams with a winning record at home. Houston (29-20) has won their last three games with their 103-98 win over Orlando as an 8.5-point favorite. The Rockets have failed to cover the point spread in 6 of their last 7 games after a straight-up win. Houston has also failed to cover the point spread in 4 of their last 5 games against teams with a losing record. Take New Orleans minus the points. Best of luck — Frank.

10* FREE NBA PICK (Rockets -9.5)
I'll take my chances here with Houston covering the big number at home against the Pelicans. This just feels like the time to jump on the Rockets, who just got Chris Paul back last time out. While Clint Capela is still out, this is as healthy as Houston has been in a while and James Harden continues to play out of his mind.
While everything is pointing up for the Rockets, things couldn't be going much worse for New Orleans. The Pelicans just received news that Anthony Davis wants to be traded. Not only putting a damper on this season, but also the future of the franchise. Davis is sidelined at that moment with a hand injury. New Orleans is also expected to be without two key pieces in Mirotic and Moore and may also be without Randle. Just not enough fire-power for the Pelicans to keep this close. Give me Houston -9.5!

Jack’s Free Pick Tuesday: Houston Rockets -9.5
All the media coverage surrounding the Anthony Davis trade request is a huge distraction for the New Orleans Pelicans. It also doesn’t help that Davis remains hurt, while the Pelicans are missing several other key players due to injury.
The Pelicans are expected to be without Davis, Nikola Mirotic and E’Twaun Moore tonight. They could also be without Julius Randle, who is questionable. That is four of their top five scores, and it’s just something they cannot recover from.
Conversely, the Rockets are getting healthier. They have Chris Paul back now to help ease the massive load James Harden has had to shoulder. Harden has done a great job in leading the Rockets to a 13-5 record in their last 18 games overall. And with Paul back now, this is a dangerous team moving forward.
New Orleans is 1-8 ATS off three or more consecutive losses this season. Houston is 10-2-1 ATS in its last 13 vs. Western Conference opponents. The Rockets are 12-4-1 ATS in their last 17 home games. Bet the Rockets Tuesday.

1* Free NCAAB Pick on Alabama Crimson Tide -2
This is too good a price to pas up on the Crimson Tide at home. Mississippi State might come into this game ranked No. 22 in the country and fresh off an impressive 92-84 home win over No. 16 Auburn, but the Bulldogs are just 1-2 in SEC play on the road.
Alabama is 7-2 at home and are simply a different team on their home. We know we are getting a big effort here from the Crimson Tide off a loss at Baylor. Alabama is a strong 6-2-1 ATS in their last 9 games off a SU loss. They are also 7-2-1 ATS last 10 vs a team with a winning record and 4-1-1 ATS last 6 at home.
Even with that big win and easy cover against Auburn, Mississippi State is just 3-7-1 ATS in their last 11 conference games. They are also just 2-7 ATS in their last 9 off a game where they covered the spread and 0-4 in their last 4 after scoring 90+ points. Take Alabama!
