Chicago Blackhawks vs. Detroit Red Wings Preview and Predictions 2019-02-20

NHL Predictions 19th February 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 02/19/2019

Offense has not been a problem for the Chicago Blackhawks during their drive to climb into postseason contention, but the inability to slow down the opposition could hinder their late-season surge. Coming off a wild 8-7 win over Ottawa on Monday, the Blackhawks will go for their 10th victory in 12 games when they visit the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday night.

Chicago has piled up 54 goals during its 9-2-0 run but also has surrendered 20 tallies over the past four games, including Tuesday's slugfest in which both teams combined to score nine times in the first period alone. "We know we're not going to play a perfect game and we know we're going to make mistakes and give up some goals, but they should be a lot less," coach Jeremy Colliton said. The Red Wings lost both ends of a home-and-home against Philadelphia over the weekend and have dropped five of their last seven (2-4-1), including a 5-2 setback at Chicago on Feb. 10. "I think our team has done a real good job of having a short memory, learning from the last game but moving on, moving to the next challenge and that's the game against Chicago," Detroit coach Jeff Blashill said.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (25-26-9): Goaltender Corey Crawford, sidelined for more than two months due to a concussion, has been practicing for a week and seems like an obvious solution to help the defensive woes but Colliton on Monday said that hasn't been discussed. Chicago again will be without stalwart defenseman Brent Seabrook, who will not travel with the team after sitting out the game against Ottawa due to an abdominal strain. Star forward Patrick Kane notched a goal and an assist in the win over Detroit earlier this month and has scored 14 times and collected 26 assists during his 18-game point streak.

ABOUT THE RED WINGS (23-29-8): Forward Anthony Mantha was a bright spot over the weekend for Detroit, ending a nine-game drought by scoring twice in Saturday's 6-5 overtime loss before registering a team-high seven shots on goal in Sunday's 3-1 setback. "I thought he was the best player on the ice for most of the game," Blashill said. "When he skates, he's really good. When he kind of drifts, he's still able to make a lot of stick-on-puck plays, but it's hard for his teammates to know what he's doing." Gustav Nyquist, who scored in the last meeting versus Chicago, is expected back after missing Sunday's game.

OVERTIME

1. Blackhawks F Alex DeBrincat has seven goals and 17 points in nine games this month, including three assists versus Detroit.

2. Red Wings G Jimmy Howard saw action in both weekend games when backup Jonathan Bernier left Sunday's contest with a neck injury.

3. Kane has assists in 17 straight games, tied for the third-longest run in league history.

PREDICTION: Blackhawks 4, Red Wings 3

Winnipeg Jets vs. Colorado Avalanche Preview and Predictions 2019-02-20

NHL Predictions 19th February 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 02/19/2019

The Winnipeg Jets relished a bit of time off after losing five of their last seven, including back-to-back decisions to a pair of struggling teams -- one of which was the Colorado Avalanche. The Jets look to regain the previous form that catapulted them to the top of the Central Division on Wednesday when they open a three-game road trip against the Avalanche.

"You get enough experience over time, there's times when they need a wake-up call and there's times where they are grinding for it," Winnipeg coach Paul Maurice said of the time off his team received following a frenzied 11-game, 20-day stretch. Brandon Tanev scored in Thursday's 4-1 setback to Colorado before collecting a goal and an assist two nights later in a 4-3 overtime loss to Ottawa. While the Jets are clinging to a three-point lead over second-place Nashville, the Avalanche have answered a disastrous eight-game skid by winning two of their last three to reside on the fringe of a wild-card berth. "Like I said a couple days ago, this team never gives up. We're going to battle to the end. We just need to get on a winning streak and kind of help ourselves," Colorado goaltender Semyon Varlamov said after turning aside all 40 shots he faced in Monday's 3-0 victory versus Vegas.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, Sportnet (Winnipeg), Altitude (Colorado)

ABOUT THE JETS (36-19-4): Maurice told reporters that a new lower-body injury will prevent burly defenseman Dustin Byfuglien from traveling with the team on its road trip. "He's got to get more tests done so that we know exactly what we're looking at," said Maurice, who stressed that the ailment is unrelated to the 15-game absence that the 33-year-old endured from Dec. 31-Feb. 5. "Listen, so ... I'm hopeful it's not (long-term). I'm feeling pretty confident that it's not, but the tests are going to tell us." The Jets reached out to Manitoba of the American Hockey League and recalled blue-liner Tucker Poolman, who has 17 points (three goals, 14 assists) in 30 games with the Moose this season and one assist in 24 NHL games.

ABOUT THE AVALANCHE (24-24-11): Two milestones were achieved on one play Monday as captain Gabriel Landeskog recorded his 400th point by setting up Andrew Agozzino's first NHL goal to give Colorado a 2-0 lead in the second period. "I've been waiting a long time for that moment, and it was just special," said the 28-year-old Agozzino, who was playing in his first league game since the Avalanche's season finale on April 9, 2016. "It's tough to put into words. A lot of emotion when I saw it go in. Just pure excitement." Landeskog (team-leading 30 goals) has provided plenty of excitement since joining Colorado, becoming the fourth Colorado draft pick (since 1995-96) to record 400 points with the franchise -- joining Alex Tanguay (488), Paul Stastny (458) and Matt Duchene (428).

OVERTIME

1. Colorado is mired in an 0-for-26 rut on the power play in its last nine games, although it is a perfect 11-for-11 on the penalty kill in its last three.

2. Jets captain Blake Wheeler, who leads the team with 56 assists, has scored two goals and set up seven others in three meetings with the Avalanche this season.

3. Colorado RW Mikko Rantanen, who is tied with C Nathan MacKinnon with a club-best 76 points, has just two in his last nine games.

PREDICTION: Jets 5, Avalanche 3

New York Islanders vs. Calgary Flames Preview and Predictions 2019-02-20

NHL Predictions 19th February 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 02/19/2019

The New York Islanders may have matched last season's win total (35) and are four shy of their final point tally (80), but that doesn't mean the team plans to rest on its laurels. Winners of five of their last six and owners of a 21-5-2 mark in their last 28, the Islanders bid to continue their good fortune on Wednesday when they open a three-game trek through Western Canada against the Calgary Flames.

"It's a complete opposite. If you look at our defensive game from last year to this year and just the way we find a way to win tight games compared to last year," New York defenseman Ryan Pulock said. "When you're comfortable in those positions, it makes it a lot easier." The proof is in the pudding for the Metropolitan Division-leading Islanders, who boast an 8-2-2 mark in one-goal games since Dec. 15. While stingy New York opts to play it close to the vest, Pacific-best Calgary likes to keep the scoreboard operator busy and has done so to the tune of netting 10 goals while winning its last two games. Elias Lindholm set up a pair of third-period goals in Monday's 5-2 victory against Arizona to extend his point streak to five games (two goals, six assists) and boost his point total to 27 (eight goals, 19 assists) in his past 20.

TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, MSG-Plus (New York), Sportsnet1 (Calgary)

ABOUT THE ISLANDERS (35-17-6): New York captain Anders Lee scored his team-leading 19th goal and first in 12 games in Saturday's 5-2 win over Edmonton. The Islanders may have been idle since that contest, but they were busy on Tuesday by recalling left wing Andrew Ladd and defenseman Thomas Hickey from their two-game conditioning stints with Bridgeport of the American Hockey League. Ladd, who has been sidelined since Nov. 13 with a lower-body ailment, recorded five points (one goal, four assists) for the Sound Tigers while Hickey had two goals and as many assists after missing 26 games with a head injury.

ABOUT THE FLAMES (36-16-7): Captain Mark Giordano scored and set up a goal against the Coyotes to set a career high in points (57) at the tender age of 35. "You don't get too many of those," Giordano said of his tally that featured a nifty deke on goaltender Calvin Pickard midway into the second period. "That's why the (celebration) was the way it was. The boys were giving it to me a little bit, but if you're going to get one like that, I'm going to make the (celebration) count." Giordano's point total puts him just three behind Dion Phaneuf's mark of 60 for second place by a Flames defenseman in the last 25 years, well behind Al MacInnis (82, 1993-94).

OVERTIME

1. New York G Robin Lehner owns a stellar 14-3-1 mark in his last 18 decisions overall and is 3-1-1 in six career appearances against Calgary.

2. The Flames (18-5-5) are tied for the fewest regulation losses on home ice with Tampa Bay and San Jose.

3. New York swept Calgary in consecutive season series before splitting the two contests in each of the last two campaigns.

PREDICTION: Flames 4, Islanders 2

Boston Bruins vs. Vegas Golden Knights Preview and Predictions 2019-02-20

NHL Predictions 19th February 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 02/19/2019

The Boston Bruins are enhancing their position in the Eastern Conference by beating up on teams from the West. The Bruins are riding a season-high six-game winning streak -- all against Western Conference opponents -- and have earned points in nine consecutive contests as they resume their five-game road trip with a visit to the Vegas Golden Knights on Wednesday.

Boston squandered a three-goal lead before rallying for a late goal in regulation in Monday's 6-5 overtime victory at San Jose to keep the streak intact. "I mean, you never want to let up a big lead like we did, but those things happen in hockey," said defenseman Charlie McAvoy, who delivered the game-winning tally. "We never say die." The Golden Knights, who will kick off a four-game homestand against the Bruins, lost for the eighth time in 11 games in Monday's 3-0 loss at Colorado. "Just a reality check I guess," defenseman Jon Merrill said after the latest loss. "Now we go back home and get back to the drawing board and hope to get another win on Wednesday."

TV: 10 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network, TVAS

ABOUT THE BRUINS (35-17-8): Boston has managed to survive and thrive in the absence of 31-goal scorer David Pastrnak, netting 19 tallies in the four games since he was injured. The uptick in production has been boosted by scoring from the defensemen, who supplied three goals in Monday's win and have combined for four tallies and 11 points since Pastrnak was hurt. "You obviously don't replace a guy like Pasta with his scoring ability," McAvoy said. "I think you just fill it by committee and I think everyone is doing that. Just trying to be opportunistic with our chances and fortunate to see some of these go in."

ABOUT THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS (32-25-4): Vegas sits comfortably in third place in the Pacific Division despite the recent slump, which included a franchise-record five-game home losing streak that was snapped in a 5-1 win over Nashville on Saturday. "I think that we're in a spot right now that we're in a little bit of limbo between the teams behind us and the teams in front of us," defenseman Nate Schmidt said. "I think it's got to come from in our room to make a push here and do something and not just limp in." Leading scorer Alex Tuch has been limited to two assists in nine games since the All-Star break.

OVERTIME

1. Bruins F Jake DeBrusk has nine points during a four-game goal streak.

2. Vegas G Marc-Andre Fleury is 12-7-4 with a 2.43 goals-against average versus the Bruins.

3. Boston backup G Jaroslav Halak, who earned the win in a 4-1 decision over Vegas in November, will get the start Wednesday.

PREDICTION: Bruins 3, Golden Knights 2

Rutgers Scarlet Knights vs. Michigan St Spartans Preview and Predictions 2019-02-20

NCAAB Predictions 19th February 2019 by Gracenote
Michigan State looks to avoid a letdown before a big weekend showdown when it hosts Rutgers in a Big Ten Conference contest Wednesday. The No. 11 Spartans, who have won three straight, are tied with No. 7 Michigan atop the conference standings but visit the Wolverines on Sunday, while the Scarlet Knights are hoping to rebound from a heartbreaking 71-69 loss to No. 19 Iowa on Saturday.

Tom Izzo is dealing with losing another starter to injury after forward Nick Ward (15.1 points, 6.7 rebounds) suffered a fracture in his shooting hand Sunday against Ohio State and is out indefinitely. That will put more pressure on guard Cassius Winston (18.5 points, 7.4 assists) to produce as a scorer and playmaker to get others involved such as guard Matt McQuaid (8.7 points) and forward Kenny Goins (7.3, 8.9 rebounds). Rutgers has lost four of five contests but has been more competitive thanks to the play of Geo Baker (13.0 points, 51 3-pointers), whose 3-pointer with 3.3 seconds to play would have beaten Iowa if not for a last-second 3 by Joe Wieskamp. Junior forward Eugene Omoruyi (13.8 points, 7.5 rebounds) is solid in the paint, while freshmen Montez Mathis (8.8 points), Ron Harper Jr. (6.9) and Myles Johnson (4.6) are all playing significant time for coach Steve Pikiell.

TV: 6:30 p.m. ET, Big Ten Network LINE: Check Intertops for the latest line

ABOUT RUTGERS (12-13, 5-10 Big Ten): Mathis has emerged as the Scarlet Knights' third-leading scorer in his first collegiate season, but it will be his play at the defensive end against Winston that will determine how competitive Rutgers is against the Spartans. Mathis will likely try to apply pressure on Winston, who struggled against Illinois' pressing defense, and force him into turnovers, which has been a problem for Winston in Michigan State's losses this season. Baker is second in the conference in steals with 1.6 per game, but it will be the freshman - he played 20 minutes off the bench in the first meeting with Michigan State this season - who sets the defensive tone from the get-go in this contest.

ABOUT MICHIGAN STATE (21-5, 12-3): The Spartans were without McQuaid for their first meeting with Rutgers, but he'll likely make his presence felt in the rematch. McQuaid has started to be more aggressive offensively in recent contests, including a team-high 14 points in the win over Ohio State, his first time leading Michigan State in scoring this season. McQuaid will also likely draw the defensive assignment against Baker, who can take over a game offensively if he gets on a roll but will have to work hard against McQuaid's lock-down defense.

TIP-INS

1. Rutgers is last in the Big Ten in free-throw shooting (62.8 percent), with Caleb McConnell leading the team at 75.8 percent.

2. Michigan State leads the Big Ten Conference in assists per game (19.7) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.5).

3. Spartans F Xavier Tillman leads the team and ranks third in the Big Ten in field-goal percentage, hitting 61.8 percent from the field.

Villanova Wildcats vs. Georgetown Hoyas Preview and Predictions 2019-02-20

NCAAB Predictions 19th February 2019 by Gracenote
Georgetown has had 2 1/2 weeks to come up with a solution for Collin Gillespie. On Wednesday, the Hoyas will prove whether they can stop the Villanova sophomore when they host the 16th-ranked Wildcats in Big East action.

The first matchup between the teams took place on Feb. 3, when Gillespie made six 3-pointers en route to a career-high 30 points. "We just gave him too much airspace and he was able to knock down all those 3s," Georgetown coach Patrick Ewing said after his team held the rest of the Wildcats to 3-for-20 from 3-point range in contrast to Gillespie's 6-of-11 effort. Villanova enters this one having lost two of its last three, while Georgetown has dropped three of its last four. Hoyas star Jessie Govan had a day to forget against Villanova earlier this month, shooting 0-of-9 before fouling out in 13 scoreless minutes.

TV: 6:30 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1 LINE: Check Intertops for the latest line

ABOUT VILLANOVA (20-6, 11-2 Big East): The Wildcats shot only 33.3 percent from the field against St. John's with the team's three top scorers on the season - Phil Booth, Eric Paschall and Gillespie - shooting a combined 5-of-30 from the field (2-of-20 from outside the arc). Booth is just 4-of-25 from 3-point land over the last four outings, while Paschall is seeking back-to-back double-doubles for the first time this season. Gillespie followed up the strong performance against the Hoyas with a 4-of-9 effort from long range versus Creighton, but in his last three games, he is 2-of-19 from beyond the arc.

ABOUT GEORGETOWN (15-10, 5-7): Govan led the team in scoring (20) and rebounding (six) in a 90-75 loss to Seton Hall the last time out and committed two turnovers or fewer for the 13th time in 14 games. Jamorko Pickett was 3-of-6 from long distance against Seton Hall and, in the last four outings, he is 12-of-18 from 3-point land. James Akinjo comes into this one shooting 2-of-23 over the prior three contests.

TIP-INS

1. The Hoyas haven't won a game in which they've scored fewer than 75 points since the season opener.

2. Villanova F Saddiq Bey has made multiple 3-pointers in four straight games.

3. Wildcats G Joe Cremo had as many 3-pointers against St. John's (four) as in his previous four games combined.

PREDICTION: Villanova 69, Georgetown 62

Tulane Green Wave vs. Memphis Tigers Preview and Predictions 2019-02-20

NCAAB Predictions 19th February 2019 by Gracenote
Memphis should have little trouble bouncing back from a loss that virtually ended its hopes of receiving a first-round bye in the American Athletic Conference tournament when it hosts struggling Tulane on Wednesday. The Tigers lost 79-72 at Central Florida on Saturday and are tied for fifth in the American standings, two games behind Temple for the fourth and final bye position and 2 1/2 back of UCF.

"We made some mistakes at the end, but we're getting better at the right time with the (American) Tournament right around the corner," Memphis coach Penny Hardaway, whose club led 41-40 with 14:22 remaining, told reporters. The Green Wave have lost 14 straight - their longest slide since dropping 22 in a row in 1963-64 - after Sunday's 85-50 loss to No. 8 Houston, and have been outscored by an average of 24.3 points in their last three games. "We're disappointed in this year, there's no question about it," Tulane coach Mike Dunleavy Sr., who received a vote of confidence from athletic director Troy Dannen, told reporters. "Going forward (from) this year we feel good about what we have. We think our young guys are going to be good. We got some recruits coming in. We feel like we're going to be in place." Memphis has won six straight meetings, including 83-79 in New Orleans on Jan. 13 behind 27 points from senior guard Jeremiah Martin.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPNU LINE: Check Intertops for the latest line

ABOUT TULANE (4-20, 0-12 American): Sophomore guard Caleb Daniels averages a team-high 15.4 points - 15.0 in American games - after scoring 13 versus Houston and 12 against Memphis last month. Freshman guard Kevin Zhang (7.1 points) scored a career-high 25 versus Memphis but has totalled only 10 points in the last four games while senior forward Blake Paul (4.8 points, 4.2 rebounds) recorded his first career double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds - both career bests - in his first game against Memphis. Senior guard Jordan Cornish (10.7 points, 4.2 rebounds, team-high 3.8 assists), who needs 56 points for 1,000 in his career, scored three versus Houston after averaging 12 in his previous five games.

ABOUT MEMPHIS (15-11, 7-6): Martin (team highs of 17.4 points and 4.3 assists) scored 25 points Saturday and is averaging 27 over his last five games. Senior forward Kyvon Davenport (14.2 points, team-high 6.8 rebounds), who fouled out of three straight games before being whistled for 11 infractions in the last three contests, left Saturday's game after landing hard following a botched alley-oop but returned a few minutes later. Freshman guard Tyler Harris (11.5 points) is averaging 5.2 over his last five games after averaging 9.1 in his first eight American contests.

TIP-INS

1. Memphis leads the American in scoring at 81.3 per game but is last in points allowed at 76.5.

2. Tulane junior F Samir Sehic (11.2 points) grabs a club-most 7.6 rebounds - good for third in the American.

3. Hardaway was 14-6 as a NBA player against Dunleavy-coached teams, averaging 16.3 points - slightly above his career number of 15.2.

Xavier Musketeers vs. Seton Hall Pirates Preview and Predictions 2019-02-20

NCAAB Predictions 19th February 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 02/19/2019

Seton Hall is climbing its way back up the Big East standings and is currently in a tie for third place as it vies for a season sweep of visiting Xavier on Wednesday night. The Pirates had lost four in a row and five of six before bouncing back to rip off a three-game winning streak, sandwiching a pair of victories over Creighton around a rout of Georgetown.

The Pirates had lost five of six overall and five straight away from home before outlasting Creighton 81-75 on Sunday behind a combined 39 points from Myles Cale and Myles Powell. "We needed a road win, we really did," Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard said. "Proud of this team. Proud of their effort." The Musketeers also ended a four-game slide on the road with a dominant 75-61 win at Providence, the second straight game that they have allowed 61 points. Xavier will be looking to avenge an 80-70 home loss to the Pirates on Jan. 2 in which it held a 10-point second-half lead.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, CBS Sports Network

ABOUT XAVIER (13-13, 5-8 Big East): Forward Tyrique Jones was a non-factor in the first meeting with Seton Hall, managing only two points and one rebound in a season-low nine minutes, but he registered his fourth double-double in 10 games with 19 points and 12 boards at Providence. The 6-foot-9 Jones has worked well in tandem with 6-10 Zach Hankins, who scored 20 points on 10-of-13 shooting in the earlier matchup. Guard Paul Scruggs paced the Musketeers with 22 points against Seton Hall in early January, but he has more combined turnovers (10) than points (9) in the past two games.

ABOUT SETON HALL (16-9, 7-6): Powell came up one point shy of reaching 20 for the fifth straight game at Creighton and sparked the comeback against Xavier with a team-high 25 points to go along with six rebounds and eight assists. Guard Quincy McKnight, a transfer from Sacred Heart, came up big at both ends of the court as Seton Hall erased a six-point deficit in the final 4 1/2 minutes. McKnight not only scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half, but he became the ninth player in school history to make six steals in a game, including four down the stretch.

TIP-INS

1. Powell, averaging 21.6 points, also scored 30 at Xavier last season.

2. Xavier F Naji Marshall is averaging 19.7 points over the past three games.

3. Cale scored 37 points in last week's two victories.

PREDICTION: Seton Hall 78, Xavier 74

Mississippi State Bulldogs vs. Georgia Bulldogs Preview and Predictions 2019-02-20

NCAAB Predictions 19th February 2019 by Gracenote
Mississippi State looks like it has steadied itself after a bumpy stretch of its schedule, even without one of its key contributors entering Wednesday's visit to slumping Georgia. Mississippi State won its second game in a row Saturday, getting 22 points from senior guard Quinndary Weatherspoon in a 77-67 victory at Arkansas, the same day Weatherspoon's brother - Nick Weatherspoon - was suspended indefinitely for an undisclosed violation of team rules.

The Bulldogs had dropped three of four before beating Alabama and Arkansas last week, and they saw junior guard Tyson Carter score 14 of his season-high 18 points in the second half Saturday. "I thought Tyson Carter really stepped up tonight without Nick out there," Mississippi State coach Ben Howland told the media afterward. "His minutes really helped." Georgia saw its SEC losing streak extended to 10 games with an 83-79 home loss Saturday to No. 15 LSU, the Bulldogs' closest loss during their skid. "They've been good, but we haven't always brought that effort to games," Georgia coach Tom Crean told reporters postgame. "Today they did, but we fell a little short. If we can build on that, we're going to win games."

TV: 6:30 p.m. ET, SEC Network LINE: Check Intertops for the latest line

ABOUT MISSISSIPPI STATE (18-7, 6-6 SEC): Quinndary Weatherspoon began the week third in the SEC in scoring at 18.1 points per game, and his field-goal percentage (50.5) ranks fourth in the conference. Freshman forward Robert Perry recorded his fourth double-double in the past five games with 12 points and 10 rebounds and is averaging 14 points and 9.4 rebounds in that span. The Bulldogs are third in the SEC and 20th nationally in steals per game (8.5).

ABOUT GEORGIA (10-15, 1-11): The Bulldogs committed only 11 turnovers Saturday, but remain last in the SEC and rank 335th nationally at 16.2 per game. Sophomore forward Nicolas Claxton led Georgia with 17 points against LSU and leads the team in scoring at 12.5 points per game, while pulling down an SEC-best nine rebounds per contest. Junior guard Jordan Harris scored 10 points on 3-of-6 shooting Saturday, and is averaging 9.8 points per game with six double-figure outputs in his past seven contests.

TIP-INS

1. Weatherspoon scored 20-plus points for the fourth time in his past five outings, and the Bulldogs improved to 16-1 across the past two seasons when he scores at least 20 points.

2. Georgia has been outscored in 19 of 24 halves in SEC play this season.

3. Mississippi State plays three of its final five SEC games at home after Wednesday, traveling only for road trips to Auburn and No. 5 Tennessee.

Florida Gators vs. Louisiana State Tigers Preview and Predictions 2019-02-20

NCAAB Predictions 19th February 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 02/19/2019

Thanks to its upset victory at Kentucky followed by a win at Georgia, LSU made a huge leap in the rankings this week, moving up six spots to No. 15 and joining Tennessee atop the SEC standings at 11-1. Now the Tigers open a three-game homestand on Wednesday evening with a visit from Florida, one of two meetings with the Gators in the last three weeks of the regular season.

"It probably does more for Tennessee and us to be recognized with Kentucky," Tigers head coach Will Wade told reporters when asked about having teams besides Kentucky atop the SEC. "It's what we're striving to be is what they've been for a long, long time. We've got a lot of work to do. We're not going to get the benefit of the doubt on anything and we haven't earned the benefit of the doubt on anything. We've just got to keep plugging along and keep trying to work as hard as we can to try to break that stuff down. ... I don't think people are shaking in their boots when they see the Purple and Gold coming, but hopefully we can get there at some point." The Tigers are on their way, off to their best SEC start since 2009 and their best start in league road games (7-0) since 1981, with perhaps their biggest challenge ahead on Saturday against Tennessee. LSU, however, can't overlook the Gators, who are on a two-game roll and enter the matchup with the conference's top scoring defense (63.1 ppg), one that held Alabama to its lowest total in conference play this season in a 71-53 rout Saturday. Point guard Andrew Nembhard spurred Florida on to victory and was named Freshman of the Week for the second time this season after hitting all nine of his shots from the floor -- only the fourth Gator since 1996-97 with a perfect effort from the field with nine-plus shots -- and posting a career-high 21 points.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN2

ABOUT FLORIDA (14-11, 6-6 SEC): Nembhard wasn't the only freshman with a huge performance against Alabama as Keyontae Johnson produced his first career double-double with 14 points and a personal-best 13 rebounds, the fourth time in the last five games that he tallied at least nine boards. However, fellow freshman and the team's second-leading scorer Noah Locke fell far short with the first scoreless effort of his career (0-for-4) on the heels of his 1-for-9 showing last week against Vanderbilt as he struggles with hip/groin pain. In giving up just 53 points to the Crimson Tide, Florida held Alabama 22.3 points below its season average and the Gators have now held 10 major conference opponents at least 19 points below their season scoring average entering the matchup.

ABOUT LSU (21-4, 11-1): The Tigers hit 55.4 percent of their shots against Georgia after shooting a red-hot 60.7 percent (17-of-28) in the first half, with sophomore guard Tremont Waters (15.9 ppg and 6.0 apg) leading the team with 20 points and freshman guard Javonte Smart (10.4 ppg) right behind with a season-high 19. LSU will look to challenge Florida's press defense and the Tigers (82.9 ppg) rank second in the conference to Tennessee (84.8) in scoring. The Tigers lead the SEC in steals (9.6), with at least 10 in 13 games, and they are protecting the ball well with just eight turnovers in each of the last two games, including none in the second half of the Georgia win.

TIP-INS

1. LSU leads the series 63-46, but Florida won the last meeting, 73-64, a year ago.

2. All four victories in the Tigers' current winning streak have come by five points or less.

3. The Gators set a school record with 19 3-pointers in their last trip to Baton Rouge (Jan. 25, 2017).

PREDICTION: LSU 69, Florida 60

Louisville Cardinals vs. Syracuse Orange Preview and Predictions 2019-02-20

NCAAB Predictions 19th February 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 02/19/2019

Its last time out, No. 22 Louisville avoided a third straight loss - albeit barely. The Cardinals would love to post a comfortable victory Wednesday when they visit Syracuse in an ACC clash.

The Cardinals lost at Florida State and at home versus Duke before sneaking past Clemson 56-55 in their most recent contest. Louisville led the Tigers by seven with 17 seconds to go before a series of errors created quite a bit of drama, not unlike the team's second-half meltdown against Duke. "Down the stretch again, we have to figure out ways to close games better," Louisville coach Chris Mack said. "I told our team mental errors and physical errors cannot be tolerated in winning time." As for Syracuse, the team has lost two of its last three and is hoping to avoid back-to-back defeats for the first time since mid-December.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT LOUISVILLE (18-8, 9-4 ACC): The Cardinals got a strong performance against Clemson from Christen Cunningham (18 points, five assists), and it was a good thing because the other four starters shot a combined 8-of-29 from the field. The reserves shot a combined 4-of-7 from 3-point range, which could mean good news for Louisville against Syracuse's 2-3 zone, as the Cardinals' top seven scorers are all legitimate threats from outside the arc. Jordan Nwora, who leads Louisville in scoring (17.5 points per game), was 4-of-13 for 11 points with six turnovers in 31 minutes against Clemson.

ABOUT SYRACUSE (17-8, 8-4): The Orange have not been lighting it up over the previous six games, scoring 56, 77, 65, 62, 67 and 58 points. The team struggled with its shooting from the field (35 percent), the arc (5-of-25) and the foul line (11-of-22) in a 15-point defeat against North Carolina State its last time out. Leading scorer Tyus Battle, coming off a pair of strong outings, was limited to seven points in 32 minutes against the Wolfpack, and he failed to make a 3-pointer for the third time in the last four games.

TIP-INS

1. In his last six games, Orange F Elijah Hughes is shooting only 27.9 percent from the floor.

2. Syracuse G Frank Howard registered a team-high 21 points versus NC State after going 1-of-12 from the floor over the prior two contests.

3. Battle had 25 points in the lone matchup last season, a 78-73 road win for the Orange.

PREDICTION: Syracuse 64, Louisville 63

Boston College Eagles vs. NC State Wolfpack Preview and Predictions 2019-02-20

NCAAB Predictions 19th February 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 02/19/2019

North Carolina State has been unable to secure wins against the elites of the ACC, but it has a relatively favorable stretch to close out the regular season as it seeks to boost its NCAA Tournament resume. The Wolfpack begin that stretch when they host Boston College on Wednesday night.

A 94-78 setback at top-ranked Duke on Saturday was N.C. State's fourth loss to a ranked league foe in a little over two weeks and one of its last opportunities for a quality win with the Eagles (twice), Wake Forest and Georgia Tech among the final five games. "We played this league and I think we played toe to toe with everybody in the league it's just when you're playing on the road in a hostile environment, you've got to cut down your mistakes and you've got to be able to rebound the basketball," coach Kevin Keatts told the media Saturday. "But I like my team. We've fought and competed against every team in this league now, and hopefully we'll clean up some of the things we need to do when we face a team similar to Duke again." Boston College is in search of its first three-game conference winning streak in nearly four years after back-to-back triumphs over Pittsburgh and Miami (Fla.) at home. Senior guard Jordan Chatman scored 17 points and junior forward Nik Popovic added 15 and a career high-tying 14 rebounds in the 64-57 win against the Hurricanes on Sunday.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, RSN, ACC Network

ABOUT BOSTON COLLEGE (13-11, 4-8 ACC): Star junior Ky Bowman was dealing with an illness Sunday that helped to limit him to six points - his lowest total since Dec. 30, 2017 - on 3-of-11 shooting. "It's just a team effort," Chatman told reporters after boosting his scoring average to 13.8, third on the team behind Bowman (19.5) and injured freshman Wynston Tabbs (13.9). "You shoot the shots that you get and just practice, and they go in when they go in." Bowman did grab eight rebounds for the third straight game and dished out a season-high eight assists against Miami.

ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA STATE (18-8, 6-7): Senior guard Torin Dorn had a team-high 17 points at Duke and leads the Wolfpack in scoring (13.8) along with rebounds (6.7). Junior guard Markell Johnson recorded his first double-double of the season Saturday with 16 points and 10 assists and he ranks sixth in ACC action with 4.3 assists per game. C.J. Bryce, also a junior guard, hit his only two 3-point tries against the Blue Devils to improve to 7-for-12 from long range over a four-game span.

TIP-INS

1. Bowman finished with 24 points, six rebounds and four assists to help the Eagles to a 91-87 win over the Wolfpack in the most recent meeting in the second round of the 2018 ACC tournament.

2. N.C. State sophomore G Braxton Beverly is 14-for-26 from 3-point range in four games since he went 0-for-9 in a loss to Virginia Tech on Feb. 2.

3. Boston College hosts a rematch next month in the regular-season finale for both teams.

PREDICTION: N.C. State 75, Boston College 68

Arkansas Razorbacks vs. Auburn Tigers Preview and Predictions 2019-02-20

NCAAB Predictions 19th February 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 02/19/2019

Auburn looks to build off one of its best defensive performances in league play when it returns home to meet fading Arkansas on Wednesday night in a critical SEC contest. The Tigers rebounded from losses to LSU and Ole Miss to take care of business at last-place Vanderbilt on Saturday, limiting the Commodores to 33.3 percent shooting and forcing 19 turnovers in a 64-53 victory.

"It was just our effort, our energy, our defense," Auburn senior guard Malik Dunbar told reporters after posting 13 points, five rebounds and two blocks Saturday. "We really stayed with it. I feel like we came together through our losses. We fought through it, and we picked up a good win. We needed this win." Coach Bruce Pearl, whose team is 4-5 since a 13-3 start, said the Tigers "showed progress" Saturday and they will need to raise their level of play against a hungry Arkansas squad that has dropped three straight. The Razorbacks coughed up a six-point halftime lead by shooting 28.6 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes en route to a 77-67 setback versus Mississippi State at home on Saturday after losing by a point at Missouri earlier in the week. "This locker room is definitely going to be able to recover," Arkansas sophomore guard Mason Jones told the Democrat-Gazette after scoring a career-high 30 points Saturday. ". ... To be on a losing streak this late in the year, it's kind of hard, but our guys are fighters. ... We know we're chasing for something, so as long as we keep a positive attitude we're going to be good."

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, SEC Network

ABOUT ARKANSAS (14-11, 5-7 SEC): Jones drained 5-of-11 from 3-point range Saturday and raised his scoring average to 14.4, second on the team behind 6-11 sophomore forward Daniel Gafford (16.6). Gafford managed just eight points in two of the last three games, but has been the go-to player all season while leading the Razorbacks in rebounding (8.8), blocks (2.0) and connecting on a SEC-best 66.1 percent from the field. Freshman guard Isaiah Joe ranks third on the team in scoring (13.8) and is the top long range threat, shooting 43.3 percent from behind the arc with an SEC-most 87 made 3-pointers.

ABOUT AUBURN (17-8, 6-6): Senior guard Bryce Brown is second in the league in made 3-pointers (85) and tops the team in scoring (16.2), but is just 10-of-33 from the field with zero assists in the last three games. Junior guard Jared Harper scores 15.4 per game and ranks second in the league in assists (6.2) after handing out eight in the victory at Vanderbilt while sophomore Chuma Okeke averages 11.2 points and a team-best 6.8 rebounds - 9.8 in the last four. Dunbar's 13 points and five rebounds Saturday were his highest totals since scoring 10 and pulling down seven boards against Kentucky on Jan. 9.

TIP-INS

1. Arkansas junior G Jalen Harris is fourth in the league in assists (5.6) after dishing out 12 in the last two contests.

2. Auburn senior F Horace Spencer has 154 career blocks, one behind the late Korvotney Barber (2005-2009) for third in school history.

3. The Razorbacks are last in the league in free-throw percentage (66.3) despite connecting on 63-of-84 the last four games.

St. John's Red Storm vs. Providence Friars Preview and Predictions 2019-02-20

NCAAB Predictions 19th February 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 02/19/2019

Mustapha Heron provided quite the verbal statement on the heels of St. John's making a fairly large one on the floor. Fueled by their biggest comeback in nine seasons, the resilient Red Storm look to ride the momentum of their stirring win versus Villanova when they visit Providence on Wednesday at Dunkin' Donuts Center.

"We're not complacent. It's good that we beat the defending national champions, but we still have the rest of Big East play. ... We're worried about Providence and then every game after that," Heron told Newsday after Sunday's 71-65 win over the Wildcats. The junior guard, who scored 19 points to help the Red Storm overcome a 17-point deficit versus Villanova, will get his first look at the Friars after sitting out a 70-56 loss on Feb. 9 with a bruised knee. Providence's seventh win in eight outings against St. John's accounts for just its lone victory in its last six overall, as the club was outscored by 20 in the second half of a 75-61 setback to Xavier on Saturday. "We didn't do anything well, especially in the second half," Friars coach Ed Cooley told the Providence Journal. "We tried a lot of different defenses, a lot of different guys. Some days this happens and it (stinks) when it's on your watch."

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, FS1

ABOUT ST. JOHN'S (19-7, 7-6 Big East): LJ Figueroa highlighted his 22-point performance versus Villanova with a trio of 3-pointers in the second half, with one igniting an 8-0 run to give the Red Storm a 58-57 advantage with 3:12 remaining. Although the sophomore guard finished with 14 points against Providence, St. John's finished with season lows in points (56) and 3-pointers (two) en route to sustaining just its third loss in 15 home contests. Junior guard Shamorie Ponds, who leads the team in average points (20.1) and assists (5.2) per game, followed up his 20-point performance versus the Friars by shooting 6-for-26 from the field -- including 2-for-8 from 3-point range.

ABOUT PROVIDENCE (14-12, 4-9): Nate Watson, who had a team-high 18 points in the first encounter with St. John's, rolled up 16 more on 7-of-12 shooting from the field versus the Musketeers. The sophomore center didn't have much help on Saturday, however, as the rest of the starters combined to shoot a dismal 7-for-26 from the floor. Junior guard Alpha Diallo, who leads the team in points (16.4) and rebounds (8.0), was limited to just seven points while matching a season low with two boards.

TIP-INS

1. Diallo recorded a career-high 15 rebounds in the first meeting with St. John's.

2. Red Storm F Marvin Clark II is 7-for-15 from the field in his last two contests after going just 2-for-8 versus the Friars.

3. Providence G Isaiah Jackson had 12 points and seven rebounds against St. John's, his most in both categories over the last seven games.

Northwestern Wildcats vs. Ohio St Buckeyes Preview and Predictions 2019-02-20

NCAAB Predictions 19th February 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 02/19/2019

Ohio State needs to keep the air in its NCAA Tournament bubble after a deflating loss at No. 11 Michigan State last weekend and Northwestern could provide the helium Wednesday night in the first of two regular-season meetings this season. Northwestern would just be satisfied with any win after six consecutive Big Ten losses.

Ohio State has dropped consecutive games against Illinois and Michigan State after winning three in a row to start the month. In the loss at Michigan State, Ohio State led at halftime and the score was tied at 42 with 7:26 left, but the Buckeyes were outscored 20-2 the rest of the way in their late flame-out. In the second half, Ohio State's shooting woes surfaced when the team went 4-for-21 from the field in the final 20 minutes and 1-for-9 on 3-pointers. Still, Ohio State is in a better position than Northwestern, which last won 73-66 over Indiana on Jan. 22.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, Big Ten Network

ABOUT NORTHWESTERN (12-13, 3-11 Big Ten): An experienced roster with four seniors accounting for more than 70 percent of the Wildcats' points this season hasn't helped them succeed in the competitive Big Ten. Senior Vic Law leads Northwestern at 15.5 points per game, senior Dererk Pardon is behind him at 13.6, and Law (45 of 137) and senior Ryan Taylor (55 of 160) have taken more than half of Northwestern's 563 3-point shots this season. The Wildcats are a poor shooting team, connecting on 40.9 percent from the field in 25 games, but a marker of success is when they've made nine or more 3-pointers, they are unbeaten.
ABOUT OHIO STATE (16-9, 6-8): The Buckeyes hit a wall Sunday in the loss at Michigan State when point guard C.J. Jackson suffered an ankle injury in the second half and couldn't finish the game after briefly returning. Jackson, who averages 12.8 points and 4.2 rebounds and has team highs of 87 assists and 65 turnovers, said Tuesday that the ankle should be fine for Wednesday. Leading scorer Kaleb Wesson (14.4 points per game) has done a better job of staying away from early foul trouble, but his production has continued to slide in recent games.

TIP-INS

1. Sixty could be the magic number in the matchup between Northwestern, which is 0-9 when it has been held below 60 points in a game, and Ohio State, which is 9-0 when its defense allows the opponents 61 or fewer points.

2. Neither team has a prolific offense, but Ohio State (70.6 points per game) is slightly better than Northwestern (67.0).

3. Luther Muhammad has averaged the second-most minutes (29.8) for Ohio State this season as a freshman and is the team's third-leading scorer (9.5 points) and top 3-point shooter percentage-wise (42.3) despite finishing with only two points on 1-of-9 shooting from the field against Michigan State.

PREDICTION: Ohio State 68, Northwestern 59

North Carolina Tar Heels vs. Duke Blue Devils Preview and Predictions 2019-02-20

NCAAB Predictions 19th February 2019 by Gracenote
The 2018-19 season gets its first installment of the Tobacco Road rivalry Wednesday night when North Carolina visits Duke. The Blue Devils, who were just crowned the No. 1 team in the country in this week's edition of the rankings, put their nine-game win streak on the line, while the ninth-ranked Tar Heels can pull into a tie atop the ACC standings with a victory.

Freshman RJ Barrett recorded the first triple-double by a Duke player in 13 years Saturday with 23 points, 11 rebounds and a season-best 10 assists in the Blue Devils' 94-78 victory over North Carolina State. "My teammates were obviously finishing, and it was great to play with them, especially Zion (Williamson) especially at the end, just grabbing everything, finishing everything," Barrett told reporters after his historic performance. North Carolina bounced back from its home loss to No. 3 Virginia two games ago with the most lopsided conference road win in program history in smacking Wake Forest 95-57 on Saturday. "We jumped on them early," senior Kenny Williams told reporters afterward. "I think our defense was really focused and we made everything tough on them."

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN LINE: Check Intertops for the latest line

ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA (20-5, 10-2 ACC): Senior guard and leading scorer Cameron Johnson (16.3 points per game) had 27 points on 10-of-13 shooting, including 7-of-10 from long range, while also chipping in with three rebounds, three assists and three steals Saturday. Luke Maye and Coby White each added 10 points as 13 Tar Heels recorded points in the blowout. North Carolina shot 62.3 percent from the floor, including 74.1 percent in the first half, and 64 percent from the 3-point line - a program record for any road game in which they attempted 20 or more 3s.

ABOUT DUKE (23-2, 11-1): Barrett continues to lead the ACC in scoring at 22.7 points per game, though Williamson's 32-point outburst against N.C. State has him closing in on Barrett as he is now averaging 22.4 points. Tre Jones added 13 points as the Blue Devils were able to score 94 despite shooting 3-of-16 from the 3-point line. Duke dominated on the glass against the Wolfpack, winning the rebounding battle 44-26 and the Blue Devils sit second in the conference at 42.2 rebounds per game, just behind North Carolina's 42.5.

TIP-INS

1. North Carolina leads the series 96-83. The teams split a pair of regular-season games last year, with the home team winning each time, and the Tar Heels won the rubber match in the semifinals of the ACC tournament.

2. The Tar Heels are 6-0 on the road in ACC play, while the Blue Devils' only conference loss came at home.

3. North Carolina leads the ACC in scoring at 87.5 points per game and Duke is second at 86.4.

Stanford Cardinal vs. Arizona State Sun Devils Preview and Predictions 2019-02-20

NCAAB Predictions 19th February 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 02/19/2019

Arizona State has proven to be one of the most inconsistent teams in the country, but few players have been as reliable as forward Zylan Cheatham. The San Diego State transfer looks to continue his strong senior campaign Wednesday when the Sun Devils host Stanford, which has won five of its last six games to move into a three-way tie for fourth place in the Pac-12.

Cheatham recorded his league-leading 11th double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds in last Saturday's 98-87 win over Utah while junior guard Rob Edwards added a season-high 28 points. Cheatham is averaging 12 points and 11 boards in conference play for the Sun Devils, whose NCAA Tournament resume includes wins over Kansas, Mississippi State and Washington along with surprising losses to Princeton, Vanderbilt and Washington State. Coach Bobby Hurley's squad also lost 85-71 at Stanford on Jan. 12 in a game that featured 11 lead changes and 18 ties. Oscar da Silva and KZ Okpala scored 21 points apiece in the victory for Stanford, which is aiming for one of the four first-round byes at next month's Pac-12 tournament.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN2

ABOUT STANFORD (14-11, 7-6 Pac-12): Senior center Josh Sharma continued to impress with 22 points and 12 rebounds in last Saturday's 104-80 win over UCLA while Okpala added 20 points and freshman Cormac Ryan finished with a career-high 19 points while shooting 5-of-9 from 3-point range. Sophomore point guard Daejon Davis returned after missing two games due to injury and recorded 12 points and 11 assists in 38 minutes. Sharma was named Pac-12 player of the week after averaging 18 points and 10.5 boards in a sweep of the Los Angeles schools.

ABOUT ARIZONA STATE (17-8, 8-5): Edwards had just four points on 1-of-7 shooting in last week's 77-73 loss to Colorado but was 9-of-14 shooting in the win over Utah, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range and 6-of-7 from the foul line. "We got a special performance from Rob Edwards," Hurley told reporters. "When he plays like that we're very tough to deal with." Guard Luguentz Dort had 17 points against Utah and has quietly put together a strong freshman season, averaging 16.4 points and 4.5 rebounds while leading the team with 38 steals.

TIP-INS

1. Stanford holds a 50-38 lead in the series, but Arizona State has won five of the last seven meetings.

2. Stanford is 9-2 at home but 5-9 away from Maples Pavilion.

3. Arizona State leads the Pac-12 in rebounding margin at plus-6.5.

Butler Bulldogs vs. Marquette Golden Eagles Preview and Predictions 2019-02-20

NCAAB Predictions 19th February 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 02/19/2019

Tenth-ranked Marquette and high-scoring junior guard Markus Howard continue their push toward a potential Big East title and a high seed in the NCAA Tournament when they host Butler on Wednesday. Howard, who is fourth in the nation at 25.6 points per game, scored 36 in the Golden Eagles' last contest - a 92-73 victory at DePaul on Feb. 12 that left them one-half game behind No. 16 Villanova for conference supremacy.

"When I think about that, I think of how great of teammates I have," Howard told reporters about how his 1,744 points are approaching the school standard of 1,985 set by Jerel McNeal in four seasons (2005-09). "I wouldn't even be able to be on that list if it wasn't for my teammates. How selfless they are. How each and every day they trust me and my abilities and they're just happy with my success. We're all happy for each other's success." The Bulldogs have won three of their last four games after Saturday's 91-78 victory over DePaul, featuring 25 points from junior guard Kamar Baldwin, and sit fifth in the conference while squarely on the NCAA Tournament bubble. Butler's resurgence began after a 76-58 setback to Marquette on Jan. 30 - its most lopsided home loss since joining the Big East in 2013-14 - marked its third straight setback and concluded a 3-6 January. "It was a terrible way to remind ourselves of what we should be doing," Bulldogs coach LaVall Jordan told reporters. "But ever since then, win or lose, the spirit and effort and enthusiasm and energy ... guys are sacrificing and playing Butler basketball."

TV: 9 p.m. ET, CBS Sports Network

ABOUT BUTLER (15-11, 6-7 Big East): Baldwin is sixth in the conference in scoring at 17.5 points game and in free-throw percentage (85.1 percent). Senior guard Paul Jorgensen (11.8 points) has reached double figures in five straight contests - all as a reserve, averaging 13.2 in a span that began 10 against Marquette. Sophomore forward Joey Brunk (8.0 points, 4.0 rebounds) is third in the Big East in field-goal percentage (64.8) while sophomore guard Aaron Thompson (6.2 points) is fourth in the conference at 4.2 assists.

ABOUT MARQUETTE (21-4, 10-2): Howard (team-high 4.1 assists) has scored 31 or more points in four of his last five games, including 32 versus the Bulldogs last month. Junior forward Sam Hauser (15.3 points, club-high 6.8 rebounds) bounced back from a four-point effort in a 66-65 victory over Villanova on Feb. 9 with 17 versus DePaul, giving him double-figure points in nine of his last 10 games. Junior forward Sacar Anim (8.3 points) has reached double figures in four straight games for the first time in his career, averaging 13.8 during that span, after accomplishing the feat five times in the first 21 contests this season.

TIP-INS

1. Golden Eagles sophomore C Theo John leads the Big East in blocks at 2.36 per game and 2.67 in conference contests.

2. Butler's bench has outscored its opponents' reserves by an average of 16.6 points in Big East games.

3. Marquette is second in the Big East in points allowed at 69.0 after finishing last at 78.5 in 2017-18.

Creighton Bluejays vs. DePaul Blue Demons Preview and Predictions 2019-02-20

NCAAB Predictions 19th February 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 02/19/2019

Ty-Shon Alexander continues to climb the ranks in terms of 3-point shooting for Creighton, which travels to face DePaul on Wednesday in a Big East game. Alexander has a chance to set the mark for most 3-pointers by a sophomore and most consecutive games with a triple for the Bluejays, who will be in search of their ninth straight victory over the Blue Demons.

The 6-4 guard from Charlotte, N.C., who showed his scoring prowess by racking up 20 points over a six-minute span in the second half of Sunday's loss to Seton Hall, needs 19 3-pointers to pass Kyle Korver for the most 3-pointers by a sophomore and three more games with a trey to eclipse the streak of 31 consecutive games set by Booker Woodfox. Alexander currently sits in eighth place for the most 3-pointers in a season in Creighton history with 81 triples and the only Creighton sophomores in the last 40 years to average more than Alexander's 16.5 points were Doug McDermott, Rodney Buford and Bob Harstad. "You've got to let a scorer go," Creighton coach Greg McDermott said of Alexander, who had struggled, going 9-of-35 in the previous three games. "You don't talk about it. You encourage them because as soon as I doubt them, that's when the doubt is going to creep in their own mind." Femi Olujobi made it 12 consecutive games in double figures and Max Strus broke the 20-point barrier for the first time in six games, but the Blue Demons were no match for Butler on Saturday on the road.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, FSN

ABOUT CREIGHTON (13-13, 4-9 Big East): The Bluejays have struggled to win Big East games but it is of no fault of Martin Krampelj, who is one of the top players in several statistical categories. The junior from Slovenia is one of four players along with Villanova's Eric Paschall, Georgetown's Jessie Govan and Marquette's Sam Hauser in the top 10 in scoring and rebounding in league games and only he and Govan are also in the top 10 in blocked shots. The last Creighton player to average at least 16 points, eight rebounds and one block for an entire conference season was Chad Gallagher in 1989-90.

ABOUT DEPAUL (13-11, 5-8): Strus has been a model of consistency in his two seasons with the Blue Demons, scoring in double figures in 47 of 54 career games. The senior guard from Hickory Hills, Ill., needs 83 points for 1,000 at DePaul and five points for 2,000 in his collegiate career, which includes two seasons at Division II Lewis University. Strus had made 146 3-pointers at DePaul, good for seventh in school history, and needs 19 more to climb into third place behind Drake Diener (216) and Will Walker (195).

TIP-INS

1. Eli Cain needs 11 points to pass Sammy Mejia (1,494 points) for 12th all-time in DePaul history and 130 to reach the top 10.

2. The Bluejays have posted an 11-1 mark against the Blue Demons since joining the Big East and have averaged 80.8 points in those games, their most against any conference foe.

3. Alexander's streak of 29 straight games with a 3-pointer is tied for 11th longest in the nation, well behind the likes of Eastern Illinois' Mack Smith (44 games), Lafayette's Justin Jaworski (43) and Campbell's Chris Clemons (38).

PREDICTION: Creighton 83, DePaul 72

Wichita St. Shockers vs. Tulsa Golden Hurricane Preview and Predictions 2019-02-20

NCAAB Predictions 19th February 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 02/19/2019

After a disappointing 1-6 start to conference play, Wichita State reeled off four straight victories before falling 72-62 to No. 25 Cincinnati on Sunday. The Shockers are hoping a date with a familiar foe will get them back in the win column as they visit Tulsa on Wednesday for the 130th all-time meeting between the programs - with Wichita State winning 11 of the last 12 in the series.

Although the Shockers suffered through their worst shooting performance in two months on Sunday (26.8 percent), they had a positive outcome on the glass as they outrebounded the Bearcats 51-42 and turned 19 offensive boards into 24 second-chance points. "It's about small victories for us," Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall told reporters after his team fell to 1-7 in true road games. "We didn't win (Sunday's) game - we weren't supposed to win the game. (The Bearcats are) a very good team with a great home-court advantage. But we saw positives." Tulsa's only setback in its last five contests was a 79-68 defeat at Wichita State on Feb. 2 and it will be seeking revenge on its home court, where it owns a 12-2 record this season - losing only to conference-leader Cincinnati and eighth-ranked Houston. The Golden Hurricane needed overtime on Sunday to extend their winning streak to three games as they posted a 77-73 road triumph over East Carolina that saw six players hit double digits in scoring - including junior Martins Igbanu, who was 7-for-8 from the floor en route to team highs of 16 points and eight rebounds.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPNU

ABOUT WICHITA STATE (12-12, 5-7 American): Dexter Dennis recorded team highs of 14 points and 13 rebounds on Sunday for his first career double-double and the first by a Shockers freshman in 11 years. Wichita State got encouraging contributions from its three centers - Jaime Echenique, Asbjorn Midtgaard and Isaiah Poor Bear-Chandler, who combined for 17 points, 25 rebounds and six blocks against the Bearcats. In the Shockers' victory over the Golden Hurricane on Feb. 2, Markis McDuffie finished with a game-high 27 points - the most by a member of the Shockers against Tulsa since 1991.

ABOUT TULSA (16-10, 6-7): The Golden Hurricane received a dominant performance from their bench on Sunday as they outscored ECU's reserves 33-2, with Jeriah Horne registering 12 points. Tulsa's defense fueled its offense early in the contest, limiting the Pirates to 1-of-10 shooting and forcing five turnovers over the first eight minutes en route to a 17-3 lead. The Golden Hurricane continue to give a strong effort on the defensive end as their 40.1 field-goal percentage defense has them ranked third in the conference and 24th nationally.

TIP-INS

1. The Golden Hurricane have increased their 3-point accuracy during league play as they're shooting a league-best 37.9 percent from beyond the arc in 13 games, compared to 32.5 percent over their 13 non-conference contests.

2. McDuffie has made at least one 3-pointer in a career-high 15 straight games and is shooting 40.1 percent from long distance over that span.

3. Tulsa G/F DaQuan Jeffries leads the team in scoring (13.8 points), rebounds (5.5), steals (1.2) and blocks (1.2).

PREDICTION: Tulsa 75, Wichita State 72

Pittsburgh Panthers vs. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Preview and Predictions 2019-02-20

NCAAB Predictions 19th February 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 02/19/2019

Neither Pittsburgh nor Georgia Tech will enter the ACC tournament in three weeks with realistic chances of a championship run, considering the Panthers bring a nine-game losing streak into Wednesday's matchup at the Yellow Jackets, who have dropped seven in a row. But Wednesday constitutes a chance for one of the struggling teams to at least experience a victory while trying to build something positive entering the final games of league play.

The Panthers lost by six points or fewer for the third time in four games Saturday, falling 70-64 at home to No. 18 Virginia Tech as freshman guard Xavier Johnson scored 18 points, but the Panthers were unable to get over the hump after pulling close to the Hokies several times in the second half. "I understand how hard this is going to be, and it's not a quick fix," Pittsburgh coach Jeff Capel told reporters after the game, citing how the Panthers' surprising 2-2 start to ACC play may have altered some expectations about his program's potential this season. "It's frustrating. We want to be better and we're getting better." It's a similar story in Atlanta, where the Yellow Jackets sat at 3-3 in conference action before the current losing streak that continued with Saturday's 69-47 home loss to No. 17 Florida State. "Our guys give everything they have on the defensive end," Georgia Tech coach Josh Pastner told the media postgame. "We have just had a real issue with scoring."

TV: 9 p.m. ET, AT&T Sportsnet Pittsburgh, FS South (Atlanta)

ABOUT PITTSBURGH (12-14, 2-11 ACC): Johnson begins the week ninth in the ACC in scoring at 16.7 points per game, rebounding nicely from a 3-of-19 shooting performance against Boston College to hit 5-of-9 attempts against the Hokies. Senior guard Jared Wilson-Frame ranks fourth in the ACC in 3-point percentage at 38.4 percent, but is 5-of-21 from long range in his past two games after hitting 9-of-17 attempts in his previous two contests. The Panthers average 72.5 points per game, but they have failed to surpass that mark seven times during their losing streak.

ABOUT GEORGIA TECH (11-15, 3-10): The Yellow Jackets remain one of the toughest teams in the nation to score on, holding opponents to 39.2 percent shooting from the field - 13th nationally - but offense is a huge problem. Sophomore guard and leading scorer Jose Alvarado (11.6 points per game) scored 17 points Saturday, but Georgia Tech shot 27.1 percent from the field and scored a season low in points. Junior forward James Banks III ranks second in the ACC in blocked shots per game (2.4) and leads the Yellow Jackets in scoring in league games at 11.6 points per game.

TIP-INS

1. The Panthers average 14 turnovers per game, 14th in the ACC and one spot ahead of last-place Georgia Tech (15.1 per game).

2. The Yellow Jackets are averaging just 53.1 points during their losing streak, failing to reach 50 points three times.

3. Pittsburgh has lost 18 consecutive ACC road games and 21 in a row overall.

PREDICTION: Georgia Tech 63, Pittsburgh 60

Colorado Buffaloes vs. Washington St. Cougars Preview and Predictions 2019-02-20

NCAAB Predictions 19th February 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 02/19/2019

Colorado has gone from afterthought to contender in the Pac-12 in the span of a little more than two weeks. The Buffaloes now take the conference's longest active win streak (five games) on the road for Wednesday night's contest at Washington State.

The two-game road trip, which concludes with a Saturday night date at conference-leading Washington, will be the final road venture of the regular season for Colorado. On Jan. 31, following a 76-74 home loss to Oregon State, the Buffaloes were 2-6 and sitting 10th in the Pac-12, but five consecutive wins have followed, and the Buffs now find themselves tied for fifth place only a game out of a coveted top-four spot in the conference standings. "It's hard to win games any time of year, but in February it's really hard," Colorado coach Tad Boyle said after practice earlier this week. "What I'm pleased with is our team has kind of embraced and accepted an identity in terms of our defense, our rebounding, our toughness, our grit. Those are the things you have to have to win games. These guys have really turned the corner when it comes to that." Washington State also was looking like it had turned a corner a little more than a week ago with an impressive road sweep of Arizona State and Arizona - both wins of least 14 points - but the Cougars couldn't maintain the momentum Saturday as the visiting Huskies rallied for a 72-70 victory in Pullman.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, Pac-12 Network

ABOUT COLORADO (16-9, 7-6 Pac-12): The Buffs have shot an even 50 percent from the field, 85.4 percent from the free-throw line and outrebounded the opposition by an average of 6.4 per game during their five-game run. Sophomore point guard McKinley Wright, who a month ago was struggling with a shoulder injury, has averaged 15.8 points during the win streak to up his team-leading average to 13.5 while fellow sophomore Tyler Bey has averaged 15.2 and 10.8 rebounds during the roll. Along with Wright and Bey (12.3 points), forward Lucas Siewert (11.2) and guard Shane Gatling (10.3) also have double-digit season scoring averages for Colorado, whose weakness remains long-range shooting (conference-worst 31.3 3-point percentage in Pac-12 play).

ABOUT WASHINGTON STATE (10-15, 3-9): Despite a 14-point first-half lead and a career night from sophomore forward Marvin Cannon (25 points, eight rebounds), the Cougars fell short late against the Huskies. Forward Robert Franks, the Pac-12's leading scorer at 22.3 points and the team's leading rebounder (7.5), had an off night with 16 points, three rebounds, three fouls and five turnovers and so did freshman forward CJ Elleby (15.0 points, 6.6 rebounds), who finished with as many turnovers (five) as points (five) or rebounds (four). Defense and rebounding continue to be issues for Washington State which ranks 11th in the conference in points allowed (77.4) and average rebound margin (minus-2.4).

TIP-INS

1. Colorado holds a decisive 13-4 advantage in the series, but Washington State has won three of the last four meetings in Pullman.

2. The Buffaloes rolled to a 92-60 win on Jan. 10 - their most lopsided Pac-12 victory this season as Bey led the way with 26 points and 10 rebounds. Cannon scored 14 to pace the Cougars, but Franks missed the contest with a hip injury.

3. Washington State is 1-4 at home this season in Pac-12 play while Colorado is 3-4 in conference road contests.

Utah Utes vs. Washington Huskies Preview and Predictions 2019-02-20

NCAAB Predictions 19th February 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 02/19/2019

Washington is seeking its first Pac-12 regular-season championship in seven years while Utah is hoping to hang on to one of the top four spots in the conference. Those are the stakes when the Runnin' Utes visit the Huskies on Wednesday night.

Entering the week, Washington owns only one Pac-12 loss and has a three-game lead on second-place Oregon State. With three weeks remaining in the regular season, that means the Huskies are two wins and a Beavers loss away from clinching a share of the conference crown this week, and head coach Mike Hopkins said his team's plan is to stick with what's gotten it to this point. "There's nothing that we're going to put in that's any different," Hopkins said last Saturday after the Huskies rallied for a 72-70 win at Washington State. "Everybody knows we're playing zone. The bottom line is we have to be able to have our energy. We've got to be together, and that's going to be a huge part of being successful, especially down the stretch." Utah, meanwhile, is tied for third place with Arizona State, a half-game back of second-place Oregon State and a game ahead of Colorado, Stanford and USC.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1

ABOUT UTAH (14-11, 8-5 Pac-12): The Utes brought a three-game win streak into Saturday's home matchup with the Sun Devils but surrendered a season-high 98 points, missed 13 free throws and had 13 turnovers in an 11-point loss. Guards Sedrick Barefield and Parker Van Dyke had 17 points and four assists apiece as the Utes shot 53.8 percent from the field. Van Dyke, a senior reserve, is averaging 8.1 points per game on the season, but that figure is up at 18.3 over his last three games in which he's connected on 15-of-27 3-point attempts.

ABOUT WASHINGTON (20-5, 11-1): The Huskies suffered their only Pac-12 loss on Feb. 9, falling at Arizona State 75-63 and looked to have a hangover Saturday in falling behind the rival Cougars 34-20 in the first half. Washington, however, regrouped and wound up forcing 19 Washington State turnovers while receiving 20 points from leading scorer Jaylen Nowell (16.5 per game) and 18 points and 10 rebounds from steady forward Noah Dickerson. Hopkins' crew, though, has mainly got it done with defense as the Huskies' 2-3 zone ranks second in the conference in points (64.7) and field-goal percentage (41.1) allowed while forcing a Pac-12-most 16.1 turnovers per outing.

TIP-INS

1. Washington dominated the first meeting, rolling to a 69-53 win in Salt Lake City on Jan. 10 to halt Utah's six-game series win streak. The Utes hit a season scoring low and shot a season-worst 33.3 percent from the field to go along with 16 turnovers.

2. The Huskies boast the Pac-12's only undefeated home record at 12-0 while Utah is 5-3 on the road, including a 5-1 mark in conference play.

3. Washington is seeking only its third Pac-12 regular-season title in the last 33 years after winning the conference in 2011 and 2009.

Nevada Wolf Pack vs. San Diego St. Aztecs Preview and Predictions 2019-02-20

NCAAB Predictions 19th February 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 02/19/2019

Sixth-ranked Nevada has won 10 straight games by an average of 22 points since suffering its lone loss of the season at New Mexico. But the Wolf Pack, who begin the week with a 1 1/2-game lead in their quest to become the first team in Mountain West history to win three consecutive outright conference titles, now must travel to old nemesis San Diego State on Wednesday night.

The Aztecs are not only hot, having won six of their last seven games overall, but they also have won 12 straight conference games at Viejas Arena, arguably the toughest home court in the Mountain West. San Diego State is the only conference school with a winning record against Nevada since Eric Musselman took over four years ago, compiling a 5-2 mark including two in a row at Viejas Arena, and also has defeated the Wolf Pack twice in the last three years in the Mountain West Tournament in Las Vegas. Toss in the fact the game has also been designated as a "blackout" and it's easy to see why Nevada will have its work cut out for it. "The crowd in San Diego is going to be incredible," Musselman told nevadasportsnet.com. "(San Diego State) is long, athletic and last year they beat Gonzaga, and Gonzaga was (top 10) in the country. ... They're as talented as any team we've played all year, and we know that."

TV: 11 p.m. ET, CBS Sports Network

ABOUT NEVADA (24-1, 11-1 MW): The Wolf Pack's 24-1 record after 25 games is tied with the 2010-11 San Diego State team that featured a 6-7 sophomore forward named Kawhi Leonard for the best start in Mountain West history so expect SDSU's rowdy student section, nicknamed "The Show", to be extra motivated for this one. Reigning Mountain West Player of the Year Caleb Martin leads Nevada in scoring (19 points per game) but finished with just 13 points on 5-of-18 shooting, including 0-for-9 from 3-point range, in the last meeting with the Aztecs, a 90-73 loss in the semifinals of last season's Mountain West tourney. Senior forward Jordan Caroline is averaging nearly a double-double, scoring 18.8 points to go with 9.8 rebounds per game, while guard Jazz Johnson (11.3 points) and senior point guard Cody Martin (11.1) also are averaging in double figures with Cody Martin also leading the conference in assists at 5.4 per game.

ABOUT SAN DIEGO STATE (16-9, 8-4): The Aztecs, behind 19 points by guard Devin Watson and 18 points, seven rebounds and three steals from 6-10 sophomore forward Jalen McDaniels come in off a 71-65 home win over Boise State and enter the game in fourth place three games behind the Wolf Pack. McDaniels, a potential first-round NBA pick, leads the team in scoring (17.2), rebounding (8.6) and steals (1.3) with Watson (16.4 points), who is shooting 40 percent from 3-point range, and sophomore forward Matt Mitchell (10.5) also averaging in double figures. "We're excited for our opportunity ... (to play) a team capable of making a run to the Final Four," Aztecs coach Brian Dutcher said. "It will be a great challenge. I'm sure we will get their full attention also, having been fortunate to beat them twice at the end of last year. I know that we have been circled on their schedule for a long time."

TIP-INS

1. Nevada is 0-5 at Viejas Arena since moving to the Mountain West in 2012.

2. Caroline has 15 double-doubles this season and a Mountain West-best 42 in his career. Nevada is 40-2 when he posts a double-double.

3. San Diego State is 79-11 in Mountain West home games over the last 11 seasons.

PREDICTION: Nevada 75, San Diego State 70

I've got to go with MY WISE CAT. Should be given a shot in this race if only for the decent Equibase Speed Figure recorded in the last contest. Has performed quite well recently in sprint races, posting a nifty 71 avg speed figure. This handler has done very well recently with entries racing at this distance and surface. BITSY'S CARLOS - Overall the speed figures of this equine look solid in this affair. IT'S MIKE'S TURN - A solid 91 avg class rating may give this gelding a distinct class edge against this group. Should be considered - I like the figures from the last contest.

#3 SHAWNA MORGAN (ML=6/1)
#7 MIMEOGRAPH (ML=7/2)

SHAWNA MORGAN - I like to play horses that faced open company in their last race and drop into state bred races. This filly fits the bill. The addition of the 'hood' should keep her mind on business today. I always like to see a filly getting Lasix for the second time. This one fits the bill. May be extremely hard to beat this mount on the turf today. Last out scored a nice turf figure, the highest of any of these animals. MIMEOGRAPH - Dupuy brings her back again. I propose you stick with this live filly. Ran against 'open' company last time around the track, in with state breds today. This filly is tops in (EPS) earnings per start. Give the once over to this one in the saddling ring. Three consecutive improved speed figs (24-29-38) make this animal a solid contender.

Vulnerable Contenders: #10 ROCK HARD SONG (ML=3/1), #6 BELKNAP CREEK (ML=9/2), #11 EBONY NIGHTS (ML=8/1),

ROCK HARD SONG - In any contest of 5 furlongs, I like to back a contender that has been looking good in short distance races recently. BELKNAP CREEK - One should normally not invest in a pony in the next run after finishing off the board following a extended time off. Tough to wager on any entrant to turn things around if there is no reward to taking the chance. EBONY NIGHTS - Not likely for this participant to make a winning move with no recent good showings in a sprint event. Awfully hard to invest in this mount when she hasn't been showing any gumption recently.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - SHAWNA MORGAN - The clash on July 13th had a class rating of 62 while today's class rating is 48. I got to bet this one on such a big drop.

# 4 BARRABAS KEY (ARG) 9/2

# 2 BELTWAY 4/1

# 5 NATIVE HAWK 7/2

BARRABAS KEY (ARG) looks to be a quite good contender. This gelding looks very good in this race since Correas has a very strong win percentage with horses going this distance. Has posted reliable speed figures in dirt route races in the past. BELTWAY - Will almost certainly go to the front end and could never look back. Could best this field based on the speed rating - 95 - of his last contest. NATIVE HAWK - Gonzalez has a strong 22 percent win rate with entries running at this distance and surface. Could best this field based on the speed figure - 92 - of his last outing.

#7 ISABIRD (ML=3/1)

ISABIRD - Trainer Silva moves this horse to a lower level to face a lower rated field. Look for a strong race this time out. Silva has an 'uncoupled' entry here. Best to be careful of the longer priced half. That 64 fig this mare earned in her last affair tells me she's a key player this time out.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 RACING FOR CHASEN (ML=2/1), #4 DEVIL'S WILDCAT (ML=7/2), #1 ALY'S BOBCAT (ML=9/2),

RACING FOR CHASEN - Hard to put your money on the win end of any horse that finishes second and third as frequently as this entrant does. When checking today's class rating, she will have to notch a better fig than last out to vie in this dirt sprint. DEVIL'S WILDCAT - This horse hasn't shown much life in the last pair of races. Could be tough for this animal to beat this group off of that last rating. Not probable to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's class figure, so put her on the possibly overvalued equines list. ALY'S BOBCAT - This mare hasn't had any strong efforts in sprint races in the last couple of months. Quite unimpressive rating last time out at Turf Paradise at 1 mile. Don't think this runner will improve too much in today's event.

Tobacco Road Rivalry highlights this week's NCAA basketball odds and analysis
Monty Andrews

Tar Heeled and Feathered

One of the greatest rivalries in the history of college basketball resumes Wednesday night in Durham as the top-ranked Duke Blue Devils welcome the No. 8 North Carolina Tar Heels to Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils are favored in this latest tilt between two of the top programs in the country, and that probably suits the Tar Heels just fine. They're an incredible 15-6 ATS in their previous 21 visits to Durham and are an impressive 6-7 SU in their last 13 road games against the formidable Blue Devils. North Carolina has also covered in each of its past six away outings.

Aztecs All About the Under

Few teams have been able to shut Nevada down – but if any Mountain West team can keep the Wolf Pack at bay, it's the San Diego State Aztecs, who host their sixth-ranked rivals on Wednesday night. The Aztecs have rocked the under at home like few other teams in Division 1, having gone 6-20-1 O/U in their previous 27 games at Viejas Arena against teams with road winning percentages above .600. SDSU has held foes to just 65.5 points per game in their building, well below Nevada's season average of 78.7. And the Wolf Pack are 8-0 to the under in their last eight vs. teams winning at a 60 percent clip or higher.

Bearcats' Basket Barrage?

You would be hard-pressed to find a better home over option these days than the Cincinnati Bearcats, who tangle with the Central Florida Knights in a Thursday evening American Athletic Conference duel. The Bearcats have won 14 consecutive home games since opening the season with an eight-point loss to visiting Ohio and have been a tremendous totals option of late, with six straight overs at Fifth Third Arena. And while Cincinnati has achieved much of its success on the back of a defense ranked 11th in the country in scoring allowed (61.8 ppg), the offense has produced 72 or more points in eight straight at home.

Mid-Major to Watch

Liberty Flames (23-5 SU, 14-11 ATS, 9-15-1 O/U)

The Flames claimed Atlantic Sun Conference supremacy with last week's six-point statement win over host Lipscomb – and judging by the raw stats, it's hard to envision a scenario in which Liberty doesn't remain on top. The Flames have emerged as one of the top mid-major teams in the nation as we head toward the home stretch of the regular season, armed with a balanced, smart offense and fueled by one of the most tenacious scoring defenses in the entire country.

Liberty enters the week ranked inside the top-15 nationally in both field goal percentage (49.0) and free throw success rate (76.8 percent), proving to be adept both at shot selection and forcing teams to pay for fouls. And there's no quibbling at all with the Flames' approach on defense, where they have limited the opposition to an absurd 60.4 points per game (sixth-fewest in the country.) That's a major contributor to Liberty having gone 4-8-1 O/U in conference play (though it's 3-1-1 O/U in its past five).

National Title Odds

You knew that the Tennessee Volunteers' grasp on top spot was a tenuous one – and sure enough, an 86-69 thumping at the hands of then-No. 5 Kentucky has dropped the Vols into the fifth spot themselves. Oddsmakers remain somewhat optimistic, however, with Tennessee sitting at +1,400 to win the national title – tied for the fourth-best odds in the country.

Betting Trends

This week's spread trend to watch: Home underdogs, who converted at a 55 percent rate ATS (60-49-5) to provide bettors with a nice profit cushion. But the rest of the major spread-related trends once again favored Vegas – led by home favorites and road underdogs, each of whom went a stunning 97-97-5 ATS over the previous seven days worth of games.

It's a small victory, but a victory nonetheless. For the first time in what feels like forever, the over has been the "superior" outcome in non-overtime games, with 160 of 318 contests surpassing the total (50.3 percent). The under is still the dominant option for the season, converting at a 51.8-percent clip in all games and a 53.8-percent rate in non-OT affairs.

What do Rider and Marshall have in common? A lot, if you ask bettors. Both teams own the distinction of being the worst cover option of any Division I school with a winning straight-up record. Both the Broncs and the Thundering Herd (stampeding animals! Something else they share!) are 14-13 SU for the season but own identical 7-19-1 ATS marks.

NCAA-B | Villanova vs Georgetown
Play on: Georgetown +6 -109 at GTBets

1* Free NCAAB Pick on Georgetown Hoyas +6
I just think there's too much value to pass up with the Hoyas getting this many points at home. I know that Villanova has owned the series of late, but this is not the same elite Wildcats team that we have seen over the past few seasons. Villanova just blew a 19-point lead in a 71-65 loss at St John's and have lost back-to-back on the road in Big East play.
While the Wildcats defeated the Hoyas at home earlier this season, it was far from a blowout. In fact, Georgetown covered as a 11.5-point dog in a 77-65 defeat. Doing so despite only shooting 34% from the field.
Villanova also got a career game out of sophomore guard Collin Gillespie, who had 30 points thank in large part to 6 of 11 shooting from deep. Gillespie has scored a combined 29 points in the 4 games since that outburst.
There's no question that Villanova is the better all-around team, you just have to keep in mind that they are a very public team and the books are going to inflate the number on them, especially with everyone looking to back them off a loss.
Don't be fooled by the Hoyas 2-4 record at home in Big East play, all 4 conference losses at home have come by 4-points or less. Take Georgetown!

Play on: Rutgers +16½ -110 at sportsbook

I can't believe I'm going to take Rutgers, but here we are. The Scarlet Knights have lost four of their last five, but they've covered three of those contests. This team won at Northwestern and Penn State already this season and lost by two to Iowa, by five at Illinois and by 12 to Michigan. With Eugene Omoruyi in the lineup, they are a little bit better and take a little bit of pressure off Geo Baker. Michigan State has won three straight since losing three in a row earlier a month ago. The Spartans are without Nick Ward and Joshua Langford for this one. They've been a great cover for the most part although maybe they have one eye on the first of two meetings with Michigan coming up next in Ann Arbor. Last year, Sparty won this game at home by four as a 22 point favorite. They already do have a win over the Scarlet Knights back in November 78-67 on the road. It was a pretty close contest and I kinda expect that once again here.

LSU -5.5
This play just missed out on our premium card. The LSU Tigers and the Florida Gators face off on Wednesday and in this game the value lies with the Tigers.
A lot of people will probably be on the Gators in this game because of name recognition but the Tigers are the stronger team this season.
The Tigers are 9-1 over the last ten games straight up and 7-3 against the spread. The Gators are 5-5 over the last ten games and 3-7 against the spread.
Back the team playing better basketball.

NCAA-B | Xavier vs Seton Hall
Play on: Seton Hall -5 -105 at BMaker

10* FREE NCAAB PICK (Seton Hall -5)
I'll take my chances here with the Pirates covering the 5-point spread at home against the Musketeers. Seton Hall has already went on the road and beat Xavier by 10 (80-70) this season, so we know they matchup well with the Musketeers. I also simply think that the Pirates are the much better team.
Seton Hall comes in with a very mediocre 7-6 record in Big East play, but it could really be a lot better. Of the 6 conference losses for the Pirates, 4 have come by 4-points or less and 5 of the 6 have come on the road. We have really started to see this team come into form of late, as they have won 3 straight and 4 of their last 5, while covering each of their last 4.
When the Pirates get hot its a good idea to jump on board, as they have gone 11-3 ATS last 13 when coming off back-to-back covers. Xavier has won their last two which I think is playing into the favorable number. Musketeers are still just 2-6 ATS last 8 Big East games, 3-7 ATS last 10 off a cover and 1-4 ATS last 5 on the road vs a team with a winning home record. Give me the Pirates -5!

Play on: Memphis -17½ -104 at YouWager

Tulane/Memphis 7:00: Hardaway and his Tigers look to bounce back after expected loss @ UCF. The Tigers should transition to death the AAC punching bag - Tulane - which easily gives up transition buckets and can't seem to find the bottom of the net on the offensive end (65.6 PPG). The 326th ranked offense in the nation won't be able to take advantage of the Tigers' weak defense. Tulane has been outscored by an average of 24.3 PPG over their last 3 games. And the Green Wave AD just gave Dunleavy Sr. a vote of confidence. As it turns out, Hardaway can't stand Dunleavy Sr. and will do everything in his power to push the basketball up and down the floor to hang 100 on Tulane. Hardaway wants to establish recruiting dominance in the area and he should be on his way to a good start in doing so tonight.

The Florida Gators are in Joe Lunardi’s last four in line right now. They are only 14-11 on the season, but have played one of the toughest schedule in the country. And an upset road win over LSU would certainly help their cause tonight. The Gators just went on the road and upset Alabama 71-53 over the weekend and are starting to turn the corner. LSU has been getting a lot of hype with recent narrow wins over Auburn and Kentucky. They barely beat Georgia last time out, and I think they’ll struggle to put away a hungry Florida team tonight. LSU is 3-13 ATS in its last 16 games against a team that wins 51% to 60% of their games. Give me Florida.

The Seton Hall Pirates have put themselves in position to make the NCAA Tournament after going 4-1 SU & 4-1 ATS in their last five games overall to improve to 16-9 on the season. Their only loss during this stretch game 68-70 at Butler as 5.5-point underdogs.
Now the Pirates get to host a rebuilding Xavier team that they already beat 80-70 on the road in their first meeting this season. It’s a Xavier team that is just 2-6 SU & 2-6 ATS in its last eight games overall coming in to fall to 13-13 on the season. The Musketeers don’t have much to play for the rest of the way.
Xavier is just 2-6 SU & 2-6 ATS in true road games this season. Seton Hall is 7-2 ATS in its last nine meetings with Xavier, including 4-1 ATS in its last five home meetings. The Pirates are 11-3 ATS off two or more consecutive ATS wins over the last two seasons. Bet Seton Hall Wednesday.

ASA PLAY ON Over 140 Points - Denver vs South Dakota, Wednesday at 8 PM ET
Let’s start with this. The Summit League is one of the highest scoring and fastest paced overall conference in the country. The Summit is 1st in efficiency at 1.097 points per possession, 8th in tempo and 1st in EFG% offense. Denver and South Dakota are what we deem ‘average’ team in the conference and the ‘average’ points scored in a league game this year is 153 total points per contest. The Coyotes look to secure a tourney berth with a home win tonight. Denver is fighting just to get in. The Pioneers rank 31st in 3-point field-goal percentage, 4th in the conference. Denver averages 1.059PPP on the year and have shot an average of 46.4% their last five games while putting up 76PPG. The big problem for the Pioneers is their defense which is last in the Summit in DEFF while giving up nearly 79PPG. In their last five games they’ve allowed opponents to shoot over 50% while scoring an average of 87.2PPG. South Dakota just played Western Illinois who is very similar to Denver and those two teams put up 147 total points. In their last three games the Coyotes have had 5 double-digit scorers meaning you never know who exactly is going to be their main scorer on any given night. SDak has averaged 74PPG at home this year while allowing 73.6PPG on their home court. Vegas had the opening total closer to the correct number when it opened, and we now have added value with the drop. We are projecting 150.7 total points in this contest.

Take the Duke Blue Devils minus the points versus the North Carolina Tar Heels. Duke (23-2) enters this showdown coming off a 94-78 win over North Carolina State on Saturday. The Blue Devils have then covered the point spread in 10 of their last 11 games after a win at home. Duke has also covered the point spread in 4 of their last 5 home games against teams with a winning record on the road. North Carolina (20-5) comes off a 95-57 win at Wake Forest on Saturday. But the Tar Heels are just 2-6-1 ATS in their last 9 games after scoring at least 90 points in their last game. North Carolina has also failed to cover the point spread in 6 of their last 7 road games with the Total set in the 160s. Take Duke minus the points. Best of luck — Frank.

Scott "The Bulldog" Rickenbach NHL Game #72 Wednesday Free Pick Calgary Flames Money Line (-) vs New York Islanders @ 9:35 ET - Certainly I respect the Islanders and the job Barry Trotz has done there this season after the head coach led the Capitals to the Stanley Cup Championship last season. However, the Isles have lost 3 of their last 5 road games and scored an average of only 1.8 goals per game in those 5 away from home. As strong as New York is, they just don't have nearly the goal-scoring prowess of the Flames. That said, Calgary on home ice at a manageable price is the play here. The Flames are back on track after back to back wins and scoring 5 goals in each victory. Though Calgary had endured some recent struggles, most of that occurred on the road. Note that the Flames have won 7 of their last 9 home games. Also, Calgary averaged scoring a stellar 4.8 goals per game in those 9 contests on home ice. More of the same here. Free Pick CALGARY

Falcons are 19-9 ATS last 28 after 2 or more losses in a row and 8-2 in their last 10 after losing 4 of 5. They won their final 2 meetings with Nevada last season and are certainly the one team in the MWC capable of upsetting the 6th-ranked Wolf Pack. I think Nevada is laying a few too many points on the road tonight to the Aztecs. They are getting a lot of respect from the books after covering 6 straight coming in. But San Diego State is 7-2 ATS in its last 9 games overall and a formidable opponent. The Aztecs are 20-6 ATS in all home games over the last 2 seasons. The home team is 9-1 ATS in the last 10 meetings. The Wolf Pack are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 visits to SDSU. Take San Diego State.

NCAA-B | Nevada vs San Diego State
Play on: Nevada -7½ -110 at BMaker

My 1* free play is on Nevada (11:00 EST).
Nevada won’t be taking anything for granted here as it’s lost its last two played at SDSU. In fact the Wolfpack is just 2-5 vs. the Aztecs under coach Eric Musselman’s command.
SDSU is Musselman’s ex-stomping grounds and while he’s dominated the rest of the conference, he’s had little luck vs. the Aztecs.
In fact note that Viejas Arena is the only conference road location that Musselman has yet to win at.
SDSU has also eliminated Nevada from two of the three MWC tournaments that Musselman has been a part of.
But that was then and this is now. Nevada comes to town 24-1 overall and 11-1 in league play. SDSU has failed to live up to expectations this season, sitting 16-9 and 8-4.
The Aztecs are playing much better of late, having won six of seven, but I think that the “revenge” angle works here.
With a chance to avenge all of those previous losses and to throttle the Aztecs in their own building, I think this year’s version of the Wolfpack finally gets the job done.
Consider laying the points, as I expect a blowout.
Good luck…Larry

I've lost some money fading the Villanova Wildcats but last game versus St.Johns we hit our big 10* investment so I am coming back to the well as I love home dogs and Georgetown who has lost 2 straight has their backs to the wall in a must win home game that would be great for their resume. Georgetown just 9-15-1 ATS and Villanova 17-9 ATS. Look for them to lose this game ATS as we go with the sharp money tonight.

Wednesday's free play comes in the Atlantic Ten.

I will back the La Salle Explorers plus what I feel is a generous spot in their game at St. Bonaventure.

The Explorers enter this game in Olean with 5 wins over their last 7 games - all in Atlantic Ten action - and while they have failed in each of their last 3 games against the spread, they do own a winning 7-5-1 spread mark in their away games for the year.

The Bonnies are also catching some wind in their sails, as they have won their last pair of games and have also picked up the straight up win in 5 of their last 7 games.

St. Bonaventure has been nothing spectacular on their home court this year, as they are just 6-5 both straight up and against the spread in Olean this year. The Bonnies also average about a point less per game than the Explorers which makes laying close to double-digits seem a little improbable.

Series history has the Bonnies on top in the last 2 meetings both straight up and against the spread, but overall it is the Explorers holding the 6-4 straight up edge the last 10 times the teams have played one another.

With the Bonnies playing just a little better at this writing, I will look for them to pick up their 3rd win in a row, but I don't see 8 points separating the teams tonight at all.

Take La Salle plus the points.

My free play for Wednesday night is on Southern Illinois at a pick against Valparaiso.

The Salukis get the nod here, as Valpo is playing like trash of late, having lost three straight and seven of eight. And during this skid, the Crusaders have averaged a paltry 62.5 points per game. And in the losses, they're averaging 61.5 points per contest.

During the eight-game stretch, Valpo has scored 59 or less in five of those games.

So I'm going to bank on the better overall team to win its fifth in seven games, with a balanced effort at both ends of the court.

Southern Illinois, which is on a 9-3 ATS road streak, has been mighty consistent offensively, scoring 68.6 points this season and 68.1 on the road, but over its last five, it's averaged 71.4 points.

The late-season surge is happening for Southern Illinois, while Valpo can't find any rhythm.

Take the road team.

My comp play winner for Wednesday goes out on the first of two regular season meetings between North Carolina and Duke to hold Under the total from Cameron Indoor.

Knee-jerk reaction is to look for an Over between these high-scoring attacks, but the oddsmakers are no dummies, and the total for this game is just a little bit too tall.

North Carolina averages 87.5 points per game, but the Tar Heels have played Under the total in their last pair of games, and have been low in 11 of their last 15 games overall this season.

Duke comes into this game averaging 86.4 points per game, but the Blue Devils have played Under the total in 6 of their last 8 games this season, and the Under now since last year at Cameron is 20-8-1 the past 29 times they have been the host.

So that's the deal for both teams and what they have done recently, but how about when they face one another?

Glad you asked!

Last year the teams met 3 times - conference tournament included - and all 3 of those meetings held Under the posted price. Those totals by the way were 167 1/2, 159, and 155 1/2, just to give you some perspective.

Overall, the Under is on a 5-2-1 run the last 8 series meetings dating back to February of 2106.

These teams are going to score, but in the end I like another Under to punch the ticket when this one is in the books.

North Carolina-Duke Under.

My free play for Wednesday night is on Fresno State laying the points to Air Force in Mountain West play.

While everyone is so excited to give Reno love, because it is the best team in the league, keep one thing in mind: Fresno State is the only Mountain West team to win at least 10 Mountain West games in each of the last five seasons, including this season.

And this season, Fresno State has outscored four Power Five conference schools (TCU, Northwestern, Miami and Cal) by a combined score of 318-287 (+31).

The offense will be the catalyst tonight, as Fresno State is 44-3 in its last 47 games when shooting at least 50 percent from the field (6-0 this season and nine consecutive games). Air Force, meanwhile, is one of the weakest teams in the league and won't be able to defend the Bulldogs' effective scheme that can go inside, or hit from the perimeter.

The Bulldogs are 28-5 in their last 33 games with at least 10 made 3-point field goals. And since Fresno State leads the Mountain West in 3-point field goal percentage (37.9), 3-point field goal percentage defense (29.4) and 3-pointers made (10.1 per game), I'm guessing the Bulldogs will run that number up.

At the other end, the Bulldogs limit the long ball, as they rank ninth in the nation in 3-point field goal defense (29.4).

Fresno State has won the last three meetings and 10 of the last 11 games in its all-time series with Air Force.

Lay the chalk.

Wednesday night comp play comes on the ice where playing the Over in games involving the Chicago Blackhawks has been paying dividends lately.

Chicago just played on Monday night in a game they ended up an 8-7 home win over Ottawa. That game featured 9 combined first period goals, and yes, the teams did have goalies in the nets!!!

The Blackhawks head to this meeting with their Original Six brethren the Detroit Red Wings having played Over the total in 9 games in a row now, as they have scored 3 goals or more in 8 of those 9 games.

The Red Wings are not as prolific with their offense, as they are on a 3-1 Under run over their last 4 games, but they did play Over the total in their most recent meeting with the Blackhawks, as they lost a 5-2 contest in the Windy City back on the 10th of this month.

That marked the second Over in as many games between the teams in this year's season series, and also the 9th time in the last 10 meetings between the teams that the Over has cashed.

Right now Chicago's offense is humming, and their goalies are basically just giving them enough for their offense to do the heavy lifting.

Chicago-Detroit Over the total here on Wednesday night.

4* CHICAGO-DETROIT OVER
