Los Angeles Lakers vs. Detroit Pistons Preview and Predictions 2019-03-15

NBA Predictions 15th March 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 03/15/2019

The Detroit Pistons have absorbed back-to-back brutal beatings and attempt to bounce back when they host the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday. Detroit has averaged just 74.5 points while being whipped by margins of 28 and 34 points in consecutive road games and the poor outings follow a stretch in which the Pistons won 12 of 14 games.

Detroit scored just eight third-quarter points and 25 in the second half of Wednesday's 108-74 loss to the Miami Heat, two nights after dropping a 103-75 decision to the Brooklyn Nets. "It's about our mental fortitude and coming out and having a better mindset at the beginning of games, myself included," Pistons power forward Blake Griffin told reporters. "I'm not excluding myself from that at all. If we have any fight about us at all we'll come out and rectify that." Who knows how much fight the Lakers will put up on the second end of a back-to-back after dropping a 111-98 decision to the Toronto Raptors on Thursday. Los Angeles has lost eight of its past 10 games and the unraveling leaves the club 7 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Clippers for the final Western Conference playoff spot.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, Spectrum SportsNet (Los Angeles), FS Detroit

ABOUT THE LAKERS (31-37): Forward LeBron James scored 29 points against Toronto but only played 32 minutes as his playing time was reduced for the fourth straight game with the playoffs being a slim possibility. The season has become a large disappointment for the franchise but James said after the loss to Toronto that the poor campaign won't prevent free agents from choosing the Lakers this summer. "I don't think it changes. I think everybody knew it would be challenging," James told reporters. "We were a team built on depth and when you continue to have injuries, you depth is not as you would like it to be. We have an opportunity to get better this summer through free agency and the draft and I believe the front office and our coaching staff will make that happen."

ABOUT THE PISTONS (34-33): Detroit coach Dwane Casey is miffed at the collapses as his club sits seventh in Eastern Conference playoff race with not much margin for error. "For two games in a row now, we didn't come out in playoff mode," Casey told reporters. "There's nothing schematically. There's nothing X-and-O wise. It's our approach. We have to understand at this time of year ... the only thing you can do is scrap and play hard." Center Andre Drummond had five points and nine rebounds against Miami to snap his double-double streak at 19, leaving him tied for the franchise mark with Hall of Famer Bob Lanier (1974-75).

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Lakers SF Kyle Kuzma scored 41 points to lead the team to a 113-100 home win over the Pistons on Jan. 9.

2. Los Angeles C Tyson Chandler (neck) is expected to miss his sixth straight game.

3. Detroit PG Reggie Jackson (ankle) is questionable after being injured Wednesday.

PREDICTION: Pistons 98, Lakers 91

Charlotte Hornets vs. Washington Wizards Preview and Predictions 2019-03-15

NBA Predictions 14th March 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 03/14/2019

The Charlotte Hornets are falling out of the race for the No. 8 spot in the Eastern Conference due to a lackluster stretch that includes losses in 11 of the last 15 games. The Hornets will try to avoid letting their latest slide reach three straight losses when they visit the Washington Wizards on Friday.

Charlotte, which visits Miami on Sunday, sits two games behind the eighth-place Heat entering play on Thursday and had the misfortune of beginning the four-game trip with stops at NBA-best Milwaukee and red-hot Houston. All-Star guard Kemba Walker did all he could to drag his team to a win on Monday with 40 points on 14-of-20 shooting and 10 rebounds, but the Hornets still fell to the Rockets 118-106. Washington sits 1 1/2 games behind Charlotte and knocked off a pair of playoff hopefuls in Sacramento and Orlando in the last two contests. Those wins marked the first two of a five-game homestand for the Wizards, who will play five of the net six at home before finishing the regular season with five of eight on the road.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Southeast (Charlotte), NBCS Washington

ABOUT THE HORNETS (30-37): Charlotte's lone win in the last five outings was a 112-111 home win over Washington on Friday in which power forward Marvin Williams broke out with a season-high 30 points while going 7-of-10 from beyond the arc. Williams slumped to five points on 2-of-9 shooting the next night at Milwaukee and sat out with an illness as the Hornets suffered a 118-106 setback at Houston on Monday. Small forwards Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (knee) and Nicolas Batum (eye) were also out as Charlotte fell into a 38-19 hole after the first quarter and never recovered against the Rockets.

ABOUT THE WIZARDS (29-39): All-Star guard Bradley Beal is leading the charge for Washington and collected 23 points, seven assists and six rebounds in Wednesday's 100-90 victory over the Orlando Magic but put the focus squarely on the defense when asked what the team was doing right. "Being able to get stops," Beal told reporters. "I think in the third quarter it was a little scary, (Orlando) went on a nice little run and made some shots. Even in the fourth they did a good job of executing offense and getting some offensive rebounds. I think the difference was just limiting those things: guarding guys, keeping guys out the paint, contesting shots and limiting the shots they were getting out." The Wizards got a big boost from the bench on Wednesday as the four starters not named Beal combined to go 6-of-30 from the floor.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Hornets C Cody Zeller (knee) sat out Monday and is day-to-day.

2. Wizards PF Jabari Parker is averaging 17.3 points on 65 percent shooting in seven games this month.

3. The home team took each of the first three meetings this season, with Washington earning a 130-126 win in its own arena on Dec. 29.

PREDICTION: Wizards 115, Hornets 112

Sacramento Kings vs. Philadelphia 76ers Preview and Predictions 2019-03-15

NBA Predictions 14th March 2019 by Gracenote
Kings vs. 76ers Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 03/14/2019

The Philadelphia 76ers are in a three-way battle for the third seed in the Eastern Conference and every contest now falls in the crucial category. The 76ers look to close a homestand with their third straight victory when they face the Sacramento Kings on Friday.

Philadelphia fell a half-game behind Indiana when the Pacers won Thursday and fifth-place Boston moved within 1 1/2 games by posting a 126-120 victory over the visiting Kings. All-Star center Joel Embiid (knee) returned from an eight-game absence to post back-to-back double-doubles, averaging 25 points and 15.5 rebounds during the stretch. Sacramento's loss to the Celtics was its eighth in the past 11 games and the club has fallen five games off the pace with 15 left to play for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Shooting guard Buddy Hield scored 34 points against Boston to top 30 for the third time in the past nine contests.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NBCS California (Sacramento), NBCS Philadelphia

ABOUT THE KINGS (33-34): Rising rookie forward Marvin Bagley III (knee) returned from a five-game absence and had 14 points and six rebounds in 19 minutes. Sacramento coach Dave Joerger indicated after the contest that Bagley will play on the second end of the back-to-back and his teammates are pleased to see the No. 2 overall pick back in action. "He brings a lot of energy, rebounding and post scoring," point guard De'Aaron Fox told reporters. "He's gotten better throughout the season, so it's always helpful when he's able to play for us."

ABOUT THE 76ERS (43-25): Outside shooting isn't a specialty of point guard Ben Simmons as he has missed all 15 of his career 3-point attempts to go with a meager 58.2 percentage from the free-throw line. However, the 22-year-old Australian is shooting 70.6 percent from the line since the All-Star break - including making 25-of-32 in March - and the improvement is pleasing to coach Brett Brown. "You could almost see there was an anger that he deserved to shoot better," Brown told reporters. "It wasn't anything that beat him down. In fact, it inspired him, I saw. That's just my observation."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Kings have won the past three meetings, including 115-108 at home Feb. 2.

2. Sacramento C Willie Cauley-Stein recorded 10 points and 13 rebounds against Boston for his 20th double-double of the season.

3. Philadelphia backup F Mike Scott (illness) is questionable for Friday's game.

PREDICTION: 76ers 114, Kings 98

Portland Trail Blazers vs. New Orleans Pelicans Preview and Predictions 2019-03-15

NBA Predictions 14th March 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 03/14/2019

Portland shooting guard CJ McCollum looks to continue his torrid play when the Portland Trail Blazers visit the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday. McCollum scored 25 or more points in each of the past four games, including a 35-point outing in Tuesday's 125-104 road win over the Los Angeles Clippers.

McCollum missed his first seven shots against the Clippers and later exploded for 23 fourth-quarter points as Portland opened a three-game road trip on an exemplary note. "I don't ever get gun-shy," McCollum told reporters. "I've missed a lot of shots in my career and percentage-wise you're going to miss more than you make, especially from (3-point range). You just have to stay confident, stay aggressive and know who you are. I'm very comfortable with who I am as a basketball player and a person, so I just go out there and try to be my best self." The Pelicans have collapsed since the Anthony Davis trade drama and lost four straight games - all by double digits - and 17 of their past 26 contests. New Orleans allowed 74 second-half points and was just 10-of-47 from 3-point range while being drubbed 130-113 by the visiting Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBCS Northwest (Portland), FS New Orleans

ABOUT THE TRAIL BLAZERS (41-26): All-Star point guard Damian Lillard had 20 points and matched his season best of 12 assists against the Clippers and his career point total sits at 12,560, just two shy of second-place LaMarcus Aldridge on the franchise list. "I didn't come into the game saying 'I need to pass (Aldridge) tonight,'" Lillard said afterward. "It's a lot of games for me to do that. I was scoring some points, I was making shots but they started to give me a lot of attention with traps and all that stuff, so I was just trying to make the next play and make them pay for giving me all that attention." McCollum was the beneficiary and was 6-of-11 from 3-point range during his latest standout performance.

ABOUT THE PELICANS (30-40): Point guard Elfrid Payton had 14 points, a career-best 15 rebounds and 11 assists against Milwaukee to become the first New Orleans player since Chris Paul in 2008 to record back-to-back triple-doubles. "I definitely feel much healthier than I've been throughout the season," Payton said of the stellar stretch. "I'm kind of getting a head of steam. I've just got to try to figure out a way to turn it into wins." Davis remains on a minutes' restriction and had 21 points and 12 rebounds in 21 minutes against the Bucks.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Trail Blazers averaged 130 points while winning the season's first two meetings.

2. New Orleans PF Julius Randle scored 23 points against the Bucks to exceed 20 points for the seventh time in the past eight games.

3. Portland SG Rodney Hood (hip) is in jeopardy of missing his second straight game.

PREDICTION: Trail Blazers 125, Pelicans 118

Phoenix Suns vs. Houston Rockets Preview and Predictions 2019-03-15

NBA Predictions 14th March 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 03/14/2019

The Houston Rockets attempt to defeat Phoenix for the 10th straight time when they host the Suns on Friday. Houston prevailed in 16 of the past 18 matchups, including a 118-110 win in Phoenix on Feb. 4.

The Rockets had their nine-game winning streak halted Tuesday, when they dropped a 106-104 decision to the visiting Golden State Warriors. "Sometimes you don't learn a lot when you win," Houston coach Mike D'Antoni told reporters of the setback. "If this didn't get their attention, then we're in big trouble. It'll get their attention, and we just gotta figure some things out and do a better job." The Suns suffered a 114-97 home loss to the Utah Jazz on Wednesday for just their third loss in the past eight games. "We have to move forward. We have had a pretty good stretch here in previous games and you have to keep building on that," Phoenix standout shooting guard Devin Booker said afterward. "You are going to have lumps in the road but you've got to keep going and punch the clock every day."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FS Arizona, AT&T SportsNet Southwest (Houston)

ABOUT THE SUNS (16-53): Rookie center Deandre Ayton had a miserable game against Utah's Rudy Gobert by scoring just two points on 1-of-9 shooting. "Overall, I give myself an F-minus," Ayton told reporters afterward. "This was a bad game. I definitely put this loss on me. I just wasn't locked in. I don't know what's happening. The shots I took were pretty bad. This is definitely the worst game I've ever played. The worst by far." Gobert had 18 points and 20 rebounds and Ayton said he didn't realize that the reigning NBA Defensive Player of the Year was "super athletic."

ABOUT THE ROCKETS (42-26): Houston trailed Golden State by 10 points after one quarter and made just 11-of-41 3-pointers during its first loss since Feb. 21. "We didn't play as smart as we should or I think it would have been a different result," shooting guard Eric Gordon told reporters afterward. "You can't really have letdowns with this team because they'll make you pay, and that's what happened." Harden was a porous 2-of-12 from 3-point range while scoring 29 points as he failed to reach 30 for the third straight game, and he is just 8-of-36 from behind the arc during the stretch.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Harden scored 44 points in last month's win over the Suns.

2. Booker has scored 20 or more points in 10 consecutive games and is averaging 27.7 points during the stretch.

3. Houston PG Chris Paul scored 24 points against the Warriors after averaging 7.0 on 8-of-37 shooting over the previous four games.

PREDICTION: Rockets 129, Suns 108

First 12 Tickets Punched
Joe Nelson

Twelve teams have punched their NCAA Tournament tickets with automatic bids in the last few days and can sit back and enjoy the madness this week around the country during the remaining conference tournament games. Here is a look at those confirmed teams and what to expect in the Big Dance next week.

Murray State – Ohio Valley (27-4)
Projected #12 Seed

The Racers were a popular #12 seed in last year’s NCAA Tournament but wound up with an ugly 85-68 defeat against West Virginia as a 10-point underdog. Sophomore Ja Morant is an expected NBA lottery pick scoring nearly 25 points per game and the Racers didn’t look out of place in close losses on the road vs. Alabama and Auburn in non-conference play early this season.

Murray State beat Belmont by 12 in the OVC Final last weekend and while Belmont is a bubble team for an at-large bid, the conference as a whole did not rate as strong as in past seasons with a big gap between the top four teams and the bottom eight teams. Turnovers were a big problem for Murray State in last season’s game against West Virginia’s pressure defense and a more favorable matchup could make the Racers a threat to advance this season. This squad won’t likely present great underdog value as they will surely be considered a popular Cinderella choice as one of the most well-known small conference squads.

Gardner-Webb – Big South (23-11)
Projected #16 Seed

Gardner-Webb went from a third-place regular season finish in the Big South to punching a ticket to the Big Dance with wins over the top two teams in the conference in succession in a pair of true road games. The Runnin’ Bulldogs are likely to face a tough opening matchup and could be considered for one of the First Four games as they will likely be one of the worst rated teams in the field by some measures.

In November opportunities playing up, Gardner-Webb lost by 12 at VCU and by 28 at Virginia Tech but did take Furman to overtime on the road. With an 11-2 run to close the season, the team is playing its best down the stretch, but has also benefitted from four overtime wins on the season. Size will be an issue in most potential matchups with the entire roster 6’6” or shorter. Radford from the Big South won its First Four game by 10 points last season before being blown out by eventual national champion Villanova.

Bradley – Missouri Valley (20-14)
Projected #14 Seed

Loyola-Chicago was a Final Four team out of the Missouri Valley last season as while the conference has lost a few heavyweights in recent years this league has a great postseason track record over the past two decades. Bradley started the Valley season at 0-5 before a great turnaround and ultimately winning three games in St. Louis in three days by a combined total of eight points.

Bradley plays gritty defense and is a strong outside shooting team and they will not be an appealing draw for a top contender with Bradley a better team right now than they will be seeded, likely in the 14-15 range based on the marginal season record. Bradley beat SMU and Penn State in Mexico in November and a slow deliberate pace of play could make the Bears an upset threat in the right matchup.

Liberty – Atlantic Sun (28-6)
Projected #13 Seed

Liberty jumped from the Big South to the Atlantic Sun this season and finished tied with Lipscomb for the regular season title, besting the Bisons in the conference tournament final. The Flames won at UCLA in December and played competitively in three other major conference losses in the non-conference season. This veteran lineup will enter the tournament on an 18-2 run and will be a threat to make some noise.

Liberty deploys one of the slowest tempos in the nation on offense and excels in getting quality shots, featuring the 13th best effective field goal rate in the entire nation. The Flames are a 78 percent free throw shooting team and the team’s top players Caleb Homesley and Scottie James have enough size to compete with major conference opposition.

Wofford – Southern (29-4)
Projected #7 Seed

Wofford was pushed in a tight Southern Conference final against UNC Greensboro but has now won 20 straight games. Wofford beat South Carolina in non-conference play and the only four losses came against major conference teams in NCAA Tournament consideration including misses against North Carolina and Kansas. The Southern will be deserving of more than one bid this season, ranking as the 11th-best conference in the nation, ahead of the A-10, Conference USA, and Sun Belt, though many suspect deserving candidates UNC-Greensboro and Furman will be left out.

Wofford shoots a ton of 3-point shots and has four players hitting above 41 percent from 3-point range. The Wofford defense could have some problems in certain matchups, allowing 77 points per game in the five non-conference games vs. SEC, ACC, and Big XII teams however. Mike Young’s team made the tournament in 2014 and 2015 with first round exits but this could be the program’s best team ever and the Terriers figure to be in a tight first round pairing in a 7/10 or 8/9 draw.

Iona – Metro Atlantic (17-15)
Projected #16 Seed

Once 7-15 on the season, Iona won the final 10 games of the season to win the Metro Atlantic regular season title and tournament title, now making a fourth straight NCAA Tournament trip. The Gaels are going to be more of a threat to win a game this season as they seem destined for a First Four matchup to start the tournament against a fellow #16 seed instead of a national power.

Iona didn’t hold up particularly well in any of the recent NCAA Tournament appearances nor did they stay within double-digits in three top 100 non-conference games this season, but Tim Cluess will get another shot in the Big Dance with his up-tempo offense and a Gaels squad that shoots well from all over the floor. The starting five is all upperclassmen from a team that lost by 22 to Duke last March in the Round of 64 as a 15 seed.

Northern Kentucky – Horizon (26-8)
Projected #14 Seed

The Norse made the 2017 NCAA Tournament and gave Kentucky a scare in a 79-70 defeat in a 2/15 matchup. This year’s team could climb to the #14 line with a strong record even with no top-100 caliber wins. The Norse competed respectably in road losses to UCF and Cincinnati and held a very tough home court with just one home defeat all season.

This team has pretty good size for a smaller conference program and statistically was one of the better interior scoring teams in the nation. Free throw shooting is a concern at just 67 percent on the season but this team could be a threat to keep a tournament game tight as they also played Louisville to an eight-point game in the NIT last season. John Brannen figures to get some looks for around the nation after three straight strong seasons with this program following a 9-21 first year in 2015-16.

Fairleigh Dickinson – Northeast (20-13)
Projected #16 Seed

The Knights started the season 6-11 including going 1-4 in the first five conference games before catching fire to the tune of a 14-4 run culminating with a Northeast Championship win at St. Francis. While the overall profile isn’t a strong one for FDU ranking outside the nation’s top 200 by most measures, they had respectable losses to Providence and South Florida in the non-conference season. As an over 40 percent 3-point shooting team, this squad could shoot its way into advancing if they wind up in a First Four contest.

The Knights earned this spot despite a late season injury to Xzavier Malone-Key as a team with a very limited bench had to make some late season adjustments. With a defensive efficiency ranking near 300 nationally, this could be a favorable draw for a top seed to find its offensive rhythm early in the tournament. Last year’s Northeast representative LIU-Brooklyn lost by 10 in the First Four, though the 2017 representative Mount St. Mary’s was victorious in its 16/16 game.

Northeastern – Colonial (22-10)
Projected #13 Seed

The Huskies beat Alabama by 16 in November but lost badly vs. Virginia Tech, Davidson, and Syracuse in other big non-conference tests. The Colonial did not grade as a strong league this season but Northeastern was one of three quality teams and the Huskies are in the tournament for the first time since 2015. That team lost by only four to Notre Dame in a 3/14 contest in that appearance and the Huskies are on a 16-1 run since early January with only an overtime loss.

This is an experienced team led by its offense, featuring the fifth rated effective field goal rate nationally, while a nearly 39 percent 3-point shooting team and a strong shooting team at the line that commits few turnovers. Coupled with a deliberate pace of play the Huskies have the potential to be a sleeper for an upset next week in the right draw with a roster full of upperclassmen ready for this opportunity.

North Dakota State – Summit (17-15)
Projected #16 Seed

The Bison finished just fourth in the Summit League but navigated the conference tournament to earn this spot with league champion South Dakota State upset by the league’s #8 team Western Illinois. North Dakota State could conceivably draw the Gonzaga team they lost to by 42 in November while the Bison also lost badly in three other top 100 non-conference tests on the season.

Size will be an issue in a likely 1/16 matchup for North Dakota State but this squad has good offensive shooting numbers while featuring a very low turnover rate despite a roster without a senior. The Bison also faced Gonzaga in the 2015 NCAA Tournament with a respectable 10-point loss in a 2/15 contest. Defensively it is hard to see North Dakota State competing well against a top contender, but this squad will hit some shots.

Saint Mary’s – West Coast (22-11)
Projected #12 Seed

The Gaels would have been an interesting bubble discussion case but they didn’t leave their Tournament inclusion to the committee, turning in a stunning 60-47 upset over Gonzaga in the WCC Final. That was the only top 50 win of the season for Saint Mary’s who looked the part in close losses vs. Mississippi State and LSU, but ultimately didn’t have a lot of weight in the win column.

Saint Mary’s plays at an incredibly slow pace and works for quality shots with strong shooting numbers all over the floor, led by Jordan Ford who has scored over 21 points per game this season while a 42 percent 3-point shooter. Saint Mary’s beat VCU in a 7/10 matchup two years ago in the Big Dance and the Gaels won two NIT games last season. This squad has good size, but limited depth and the roster includes only one senior. Expect Randy Bennett’s team to control the pace of play in whatever matchup they pull.

Colgate – Patriot (23-10)
Projected #15 Seed

The Raiders will take an 11-gmae winning streak into the NCAA Tournament after winning by double-digits in all three Patriot Tournament games, which were played on their home court. Colgate didn’t look too out of place in non-conference defeats at Syracuse, South Florida, Penn State, and Pittsburgh including two 10-point losses. The Patriot is also an underrated league and last year’s representative Bucknell lost by just four to Michigan State in a 3/14 contest while Bucknell lost by just six to West Virginia in the 2017 tournament.

Like many of the teams on this list, Colgate plays at a slow pace and can shoot as a 39 percent 3-point shooting team and a strong free throw converting team. This squad has enough size to compete with larger programs as 6’10” Rapolas Ivanauskas leads the team in scoring. This could be one of the more dangerous #15 draws and even could get #14 seed consideration depending on how the remaining automatic bids fall.

The “Favorite Express” kept chugging along last night with a perfect 6-0 straight up record but a few underdogs saved face and earned a 3-3 mark against the spread. Since Monday, the ‘chalk’ has gone 21-4 SU and 16-9 ATS (64%). During this span, total bettors have watched the ‘under’ go 17-8 (68%) and that includes a 10-2 (83%) mark the past two days.

Friday’s card has eight games on tap and with the help from NBA expert and contributor Tony Mejia, let’s handicap the slate.

(Straight Up – SU, Against the Spread – ATS)

Game of the Night (NBATV, 8:05 p.m. ET)

Milwaukee (51-17 SU, 40-26-2 ATS) at Miami (32-35 SU, 36-31 ATS)

If the NBA Playoffs began today, this matchup would be the 1-8 series in the Eastern Conference and the Bucks would be very heavy favorites even though the Heat are often given respect for their pedigree.

For this game, Milwaukee opened as a six-point favorite and the number is sitting at -5 as of this morning. Mejia weighed in on the only nationally televised game on Friday.

“We’ll see if taking in the local delicacies has any effect on the East’s top team since they’ve had some time to be exposed to the “South Beach flu,” but Mike Budenholzer is expected to have a full roster in place since George Hill is coming back after missing a few games with a groin strain. Considering this is a playoff preview of the East’s most likely 1-8 matchup, the Bucks could show off how locked in they are here, especially since the Heat have really struggled at home, coming into this one 16-19 at American Airlines Arena. Milwaukee will host Miami on March 22, so they can really dig in and get to know their potential first-round matchup over the next week since both teams are back at relatively full strength,” said Mejia.

“The Bucks lost in South Florida 94-87 when these teams played on Dec. 22 and Giannis Antetokounmpo has really struggled the Heat defense. “Greek Freak” has missed 14 of his 21 field-goal attempts (33 percent) while averaging just 10.5 points through two games against the Heat, by far his lowest-scoring output against any team. With Justise Winslow, Josh Richardson and Bam Adebayo now in the starting lineup together in a mix that has really worked well for Miami, Antetokounmpo will see a number of capable defenders who can make him work. Even with Dwyane Wade questionable with elbow soreness, this is a great chance for the Heat to prove to themselves that they can hang with the top seed if they’re to square off in a series in a month’s time.”

As Mejia mentioned, Milwaukee lost its last trip to South Florida and that’s been a common them for the club. Including that setback, it has dropped five straight games at American Airlines Arena with the last win coming in the 2016 regular season. The Bucks have been held under 100 points in all of those defeats and that’s led to an easy 4-1 ‘under’ mark. However, the Bucks showed their muscle in this series recently by blasting the Heat 124-86 on Jan. 15 as 8 ½-point home favorites. Prior to that victory, Miami had captured six straight between the pair.

As a home underdog this season, Miami has gone 6-4 SU and 7-3 ATS. The ‘under’ started 5-1 in those games but the last four have gone ‘over’ the number. The total on this game opened 221 and the early money pushed it down to 219 ½. Mejia explained his handicap on the move, “With both teams likely to supply an honest effort on defense in order to send a message and keep negative plays off film that’s likely to be exhaustively reviewed, the ‘under’ is an interesting potential play. At 220, the total opened at a larger number than oddsmakers placed on the first two meetings, which were in the 215-218 range. Both easily remained below the posted number."

Out of Gas?

Detroit (34-33 SU, 33-32-2 ATS) came out of the All-Star break clicking on all cylinders, going 8-1 SU and 7-2 ATS. After that hot start, the Pistons have come back to earth with back-to-back losses and the offense was held to 74 and 75 points. The Los Angeles Lakers (31-37 SU, 26-40-2 ATS) visit Detroit tonight as heavy ‘dogs (+11) with a short-handed squad and they’re playing on no rest, which seems like a ‘get right’ game for the Pistons.

Mejia provided his thoughts on the non-conference matchup. “With LeBron James possibly sitting out, it will be interesting to see what the Lakers look like on the road after being completely overwhelmed with their best player on the floor for most of a 14-point fourth quarter. The Pistons come off an embarrassing loss in Miami and would normally be in bounce-back spot here but point guard Reggie Jackson turned his ankle late in the blowout loss and may require additional time before he can return. Blake Griffin struggled in Detroit’s 113-100 loss at Staples on Jan. 13, while Kyle Kuzma scored 41 points in one of the L.A.’s best performances without James. Before you get too excited about a potential trend, Brandon Ingram and Lonzo Ball started and combined for 15 points, 14 boards and 17 assists in that game prior to their season-ending injuries and Ivica Zubac and Michael Beasley combined for 30 points off the bench. Zubac is now with the Clippers. Beasley now plays in China. Griffin is in a 5-for-19 slump over the Pistons’ current losing streak, so you may want to stay away from this rematch altogether given all the variables in play,” said Mejia.

Injuries aside, the home team has won four straight games in this series, which includes the 113-100 win by Los Angeles from the Staples Center on Jan. 9 as a 1 ½-point home favorite mentioned by Mejia. The Pistons have won and covered their last three home encounters against the Lakers and the ‘over’ is 3-0 in those games with Detroit averaging 114.6 PPG.

Also noted above, the Pistons may not have point guard Reggie Jackson (ankle) available for this game. He’s listed as ‘questionable’ and so is the Lakers’ Josh Hart (knee), Lance Stephenson (toe) and Tyson Chandler (neck).

The Lakers are 6-4 overall this season on no rest but they limp into this game with losses in three of their last four back-to-back spots. Total bettors should note that the ‘under’ is an eye-opening 8-1-1 in those contests for Los Angeles.

Heavy Home Chalk

Along with the Pistons, we have four other teams laying nine points or more tonight and it could be hard to make a case for any underdogs pulling off the outright upsets.

Philadelphia (-9) vs. Sacramento: Of the heavy ‘dogs listed on Friday, the Kings will likely get the most attention. Sacramento has won three straight and five of its last six encounters against Philadelphia, which includes a 115-108 win on Feb. 2 as a three-point home ‘dog. The Kings are coming off a tough 126-120 loss at Boston last night in a game they led most of the way. The reason you might stay away from Sacramento comes to down to situations and the club is 1-7 SU and 0-8 ATS in its last eight games on no rest. Philadelphia has won two straight since All-Star Joel Embiid returned after missing the first eight gmes of the second-half and another win seems likely here. Total bettors should note that the 76ers are on an 8-0 ‘under’ run coming into this game.

Houston (-13) vs. Phoenix: The Suns have been decent for bettors (6-3 ATS) in the second-half but they finally had that clunker on Wednesday when they collapsed at home in a 114-97 loss. The Rockets have gone 6-1 SU and 5-2 ATS when listed as double-digit favorites this season and they’re coming off a humbling loss to Golden State on Wednesday. A bounce back win seems fitting but the Rockets have failed to cover big numbers in their last three wins over the Suns.

San Antonio (-13 ½) vs. New York: This is a revenge game for the Spurs, who were embarrassed by the Knicks 130-118 as nine-point road favorites on Feb. 24 from Madison Square Garden. San Antonio has only been a double-digit home favorite three times this season and it’s gone 3-0 SU and 1-2 ATS. New York has gone 1-7 SU and 3-5 ATS since beating San Antonio and the offense has been held under 100 points in its last four games, which has led to a 4-0 ‘under’ mark.

L.A. Clippers (-9) vs. Chicago: Seems like a high line for Los Angeles but it deserves the respect this season and it has had its way with Chicago, winning six straight games (4-2) in this series and that includes a 106-101 win at the Bulls on Jan. 25. Chicago enters this game in poor form too, going 1-5 both SU and ATS in its last six and that includes a run of three straight losses. L.A. was humbled at home by Portland on Tuesday and it hasn’t dropped back-to-back games since late January. The Clippers have gone 3-1 SU and 2-2 ATS when listed as a home favorite of nine points or more this season.
