# 2 DENEB 5/1

# 4 ROLL TIDE ROLL 2/1

# 5 HOSWAY 6/1

I've got to go with DENEB. Put up a very strong speed figure last time out. Has a very strong shot for this event if you like back class. ROLL TIDE ROLL - He has been racing very well as of late while recording sharp Equibase speed figs. The average class fig alone makes this entrant a contender. HOSWAY - Has competitive early lick and ought to fare well against this field. With a very good 72 speed fig last time out, will clearly be a factor in this race.

#4 SEMINARA (ML=8/1)
#3 LIL HOOH'S HOOH (ML=6/1)

SEMINARA - Lots of positive 'vibrations' associated with this thoroughbred and her barn. LIL HOOH'S HOOH - This mount should be rumbling in the stretch.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 MEGALIN CANDY (ML=3/1), #2 QUICKLUCKYCOCO (ML=7/2), #7 DEFERENCE (ML=4/1),

MEGALIN CANDY - In any event of 5 furlongs, I like to support a contender that has been sharp in sprint contests of late. I can't play this confirmed non-winner. Gets the task finished once in a while. QUICKLUCKYCOCO - The speed ratings are going downward. I'm not placing a wager on this racer off of that trend. This questionable contender ran a common speed figure last time out. She shouldn't improve and will probably get beat in today's race running that figure. DEFERENCE - Can't bet on this steed in today's sprint of 5 furlongs. Hasn't even hit the board in a sprint event lately.

# 10 CLANCY'S PEPPER 6/1

# 4 POINT OF AMERICA 8/1

# 6 VALID ARGUMENT 4/1

I lean toward CLANCY'S PEPPER here. Could beat this field given the 78 Equibase Speed Fig posted in his last outing. Boasts formidable speed figures on average overall when measured up against the rest of this field. Win percentage one of the best in this group of horses in this race. POINT OF AMERICA - Will almost certainly compete quite well in the early speed battle which bodes well with this group of horses in this race. Could provide positive dividends based on very strong recent speed figs with an average of 66. VALID ARGUMENT - When this jockey and trainer team up, risk takers often make money. Ramirez has him trained quite well to break sharply out of the gate.

#6 NANO LINK (ML=8/1)
#5 GRECIAN DANCER (ML=7/5)

NANO LINK - The rest of the group may trail this thoroughbred all the way around the track. This filly gets a weight break of -7 lbs from last race. This could make a difference right here. GRECIAN DANCER - Kulp drops her down to this level. You don't need too much more handicapping data to figure that this horse has a darn good chance at this level. This horse is at the top in earnings per start. She looks nice in today's clash.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 RING FOR ESSA (ML=3/1), #1 MOXIE MOMENTUM (ML=4/1), #4 BOOM POW POW (ML=6/1),

RING FOR ESSA - You always figure that this horse has a shot to be victorious, but she just misses most every time. Doubtful that the fig she registered on March 23rd will be good enough in this affair. MOXIE MOMENTUM - Tough to put any dough on this filly on the top end. Likes to end up on the board though. Improbable that the rating she earned on March 23rd will hold up in this race. BOOM POW POW - Most likely won't make much of an impact today.

Play #6 NANO LINK to win if you can get odds of 5/2 or more

MLB | Rockies vs Rays
Play on: Rockies +126 at pinnacle

The Colorado Rockies (2-4 Overall, 2-4 Away) are looking to avoid the sweep this afternoon against the Tampa Bay Rays (5-1 Overall, 5-1 Home).
In order to stop their losing streak at four, German Marquez (1-0 1.50 ERA) must pitch well for Colorado.
Marquez was good in his first start of the year. He lasted six innings and gave up two hits. He also had three walks, which could be game changing sometimes.
Tampa Bay got the win yesterday over Colorado on the strength of eight hits. Blake Snell was brilliant in the win. He had a career high 13 strikeouts.
This afternoon, Charlie Morton (1-0 3.60 ERA) will take the ball. Morton was solid in his first start. He pitched five innings, allowing three hits and two runs against the Astros.
This game should be interesting when it comes to pitching. Look for the Rockies bats to come alive on the road this game. They are hitting just .239 this year.
Take the Rockies to avoid the sweep in W.Scott's free play of the day.

T.M. Selection: USF/DePaul over (FREE PLAY)
I had a play on USF and it would hold on for the 63-61 home victory in Game 1 of the CBI Tournament Championship on Monday. With a chance to take the title here, the defensive minded Bulls are going to be out to duplicate their performance, holding the Blue Demons to just 38.5 percent from the floor in the victory.
In Game 2 I’m expecting another competitive match-up, one which will likely be decided in the final moments again.
However this time around I expect more of an offensive affair. With the change in venue and with DePaul pushing the pace from start to finish as it looks to avoid elimination, everything points to a shootout.
USF is one of the best defensive teams in the nation, but at nearly 79 PPG average offensively for the Blue Demons, I think the Bulls’ unit gets pushed to the brink in Game 2. From a situational stand point I definitely think this one sets up great as an offensive “shootout.”

Milwaukee Brewers vs. Cincinnati Reds Preview and Predictions 04-03-2019 in MLB

The Milwaukee Brewers haven't made it easy on themselves, but they're off to a strong start and will try to finish a three-game road sweep of the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday. The Brewers are 5-1 with their five wins coming by a total of six runs, including a pair of 4-3 victories to start the series.

Milwaukee kept up its winning ways Tuesday, when Orlando Arcia's three-run homer in the sixth gave them a lead and the bullpen nailed down the team's fourth one-run victory in its first six games. The Brewers have won four straight contests and are outscoring opponents 27-25 overall. The Reds have lost three straight since an Opening Day win over Pittsburgh. Eugenio Suarez hit a solo homer in the eighth inning Tuesday for the Reds' third home run of the season, while four players in the majors had at least four entering play Tuesday.

TV: 12:35 p.m. ET, FS Wisconsin (Milwaukee), FS Ohio (Cincinnati)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Freddy Peralta (0-0, 12.00 ERA) vs. Reds RH Luis Castillo (0-0, 1.59)

Peralta had a tough time finding the zone in his season debut against St. Louis on Friday. The 22-year-old Dominican needed 39 pitches to get through the first inning and lasted only three frames, allowing four runs on six hits and three walks. The Reds have roughed up Peralta in two starts in Cincinnati, where he is 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA in 9 1/3 innings.

Castillo didn't quite live up to the hype last season, but he started 2019 with a bang. The 26-year-old Dominican struck out eight and limited Pittsburgh to one run and two hits over 5 2/3 innings in his season debut Thursday. Castillo is 2-1 with a 3.08 ERA in four starts against the Brewers.

WALK-OFFS

1. Suarez, who led the Reds with 104 RBIs last season, recorded his first two of the season Tuesday.

2. Arcia, who snapped an 0-for-16 skid to open the season with his go-ahead home run Tuesday, is 6-for-11 with a double against Castillo.

3. Reds C Tucker Barnhart is 4-for-7 with a double and a homer versus Peralta.

PREDICTION: Reds 3, Brewers 2

Philadelphia Phillies vs. Washington Nationals Preview and Predictions 04-03-2019 in MLB

Bryce Harper made himself at home in his old stomping grounds, answering a raucous crowd by belting a two-run homer to highlight his three-hit performance as the Philadelphia Phillies improved to 4-0 for the first time since 1915. Harper and the Phillies look to continue their fast start on Wednesday afternoon when they conclude the abbreviated two-game series against the Washington Nationals.

After tipping his cap to the franchise with which he spent his first seven seasons, Harper withstood the jeers from the jilted fans and provided an exclamation point in Tuesday's 8-2 romp with a monster bat flip in the direction of the Nationals' dugout. Signed to a 13-year, $330 million contract in late February, Harper's addition has ignited a Phillies' offense that has erupted for 31 runs this season. While Philadelphia is receiving contributions from fellow offseason acquisitions Andrew McCutchen and Jean Segura among others, Washington could be dealing with the subtraction of Trea Turner for a while with a reported broken right index finger after he was hit by a pitch in the first inning. Turner played in all 162 games last season for the Nationals, who are also without versatile Howie Kendrick (hamstring) and outfielder Michael A. Taylor (hip, knee).

TV: 1:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, NBCS Philadelphia, MASN2 (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Aaron Nola (1-0, 1.50 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Anibal Sanchez (2018: 7-6, 2.83)

Nola struggled to get untracked in the early going of his second straight Opening Day start, surrendering an RBI single in the second inning and issuing a career-high five walks before settling down to pick up the win in a 10-4 victory against Atlanta on Thursday. "He had some walks, but then he collected himself, and he put us on his back," manager Gabe Kapler said of the 25-year-old, who allowed just the one run on two hits in six innings. Nola handcuffed Washington last season, striking out 35 batters in five starts (33 2/3 innings) en route to posting a 3-1 mark while limiting the club to a .200 batting average.

Sanchez parlayed a strong comeback season with the Braves into a two-year, $19 million contract with Washington on Dec. 27. The 35-year-old Venezuelan struck out 135 batters in 136 2/3 innings in 2018, one year removed from posting a 3-7 record with a gaudy 6.41 ERA and 1.59 WHIP with Detroit. Sanchez has kept McCutchen (4-for-19, eight strikeouts) in check, while Harper is 4-for-14 against the hurler -- albeit with two triples and a homer.

WALK-OFFS

1. Philadelphia 3B Maikel Franco, who has matched Harper with three homers, has hit safely in all four games this season.

2. Washington 3B Anthony Rendon has multi-hit performances in three straight outings.

3. Nationals LF Juan Soto is just 3-for-16 with nine strikeouts this season.

PREDICTION: Phillies 5, Nationals 1

Chicago White Sox vs. Cleveland Indians Preview and Predictions 04-03-2019 in MLB

The Cleveland Indians rallied for a victory in their home opener and look to finish off a two-game sweep of the American League Central-rival Chicago White Sox in Wednesday afternoon's finale. The Indians fell behind by two runs in the top of the eighth inning Monday, but used four walks, two hits and an error to score four times in the bottom of the frame to earn a 5-3 victory.

"Like, man, 'this is Tribe baseball right here'," Cleveland's starting pitcher Mike Clevinger told reporters Monday of what he said to clubhouse guys while watching the comeback. "If there's anything, this reminds of me getting up to stay with the 2016 team. It wasn't all these flashy wins all the time. It was like grinding it out in the eighth and ninth inning, losing a lead, coming back. That's Tribe baseball. That's how we're going to win and I like it." Corey Kluber, who was 4-0 with a 0.96 ERA and 39 strikeouts across 28 innings against Chicago last year, gets the call Wednesday against White Sox left-hander Carlos Rodon. Chicago has managed one victory in its first four games while giving up 21 runs and batting .211 as a team, but infielder Yoan Moncada is off to a strong start by going 7-for-17 with six runs scored, a homer and four RBIs. Slugger Jose Abreu launched two homers and knocked in four runs in the early going this season and has had success against Kluber, batting .320 with five home runs and 12 RBIs in 50 at-bats.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, NBCS Chicago, STO (Cleveland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox LH Carlos Rodon (0-1, 3.38 ERA) vs. Indians RH Corey Kluber (0-1, 2.57)

Rodon allowed three runs (two earned) over 5 1/3 innings in a 5-3 loss at Kansas City on Opening Day, striking out six and walking one. The 26-year-old Miami native finished last season by losing five of six starts (0-5) with a 9.22 ERA in September, after starting the campaign with a 6-3 mark and a 2.70 ERA in his first 14 outings. Carlos Santana is 7-for-21 with a pair of doubles versus Rodon, who went 0-2 with a 3.42 ERA in four starts - walking 10 in 26 1/3 innings - against Cleveland last year.

Kluber suffered the loss Thursday at Minnesota despite giving up two runs on four hits across seven innings while throwing just 79 pitches. The 32-year-old two-time American League Cy Young winner, who won a career-high 20 games last season, struck out five and walked one in the opener after winning his last four decisions of the 2018 regular season. Yolmer Sanchez is 6-for-36 but has homered against Kluber, who is 13-4 with a 2.80 ERA in 24 career appearances (23 starts) versus the White Sox.

WALK-OFFS

1. White Sox SS Tim Anderson left the team Monday to be with his wife, who went into labor, and is not expected back until Thursday in Chicago.

2. Santana has led the Indians' offense in the first four games, going 6-for-13 with two walks and four RBIs.

3. Chicago OF Daniel Palka is 0-for-14 with six strikeouts to open the season, but has gone deep once against Kluber.

Colorado Rockies vs. Tampa Bay Rays Preview and Predictions 04-03-2019 in MLB

The Colorado Rockies hope to wake up their dormant bats and avoid a three-game sweep when they complete a season-opening road trip against the red-hot Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday afternoon. The Rockies, who were second in the National League in runs last season (780), have scored four times in the last four games after starting 2019 with a pair of comfortable wins.

Trevor Story, who owns the lone home run for Colorado through the first six contests, had the only two hits Tuesday as the Rockies could not figure out reigning American League Cy Young award winner Blake Snell in a 4-0 setback - striking out 14 times. German Marquez, who reportedly agreed to a five-year, $43 million extension with Colorado on Tuesday, will try to win his second straight to open the season and the Rays go after their sixth consecutive victory with veteran Charlie Morton on the mound. Tampa Bay scored three times in the first inning Tuesday, in part because of a challenge that overturned the second out of the frame when catcher Chris Iannetta did not have his foot on home plate for the force play and Guillermo Heredia followed with a two-run single. Rays outfielder Tommy Pham had a walk Tuesday to extend his on-base streak to 38 straight games dating back to last season, one away from tying the franchise record set by Johnny Damon in 2011.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain (Colorado), FS Sun (Tampa Bay)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies RH German Marquez (1-0, 1.50 ERA) vs. Rays RH Charlie Morton (1-0, 3.60)

Marquez, who set career highs with 14 wins and 230 strikeouts last season, was outstanding in his 2019 debut Friday while limiting Miami to one run on two hits and fanning seven with three walks. The 24-year-old Venezuelan was 8-5 on the road last season and had a 2.61 ERA after the All-Star break overall to finish his second full season in the majors with a career-most 33 starts. Marquez faces Tampa Bay for the first time in his career, but is 5-0 with a 2.29 ERA in eight interleague starts.

Morton won his Tampa Bay debut Friday against Houston, allowing two runs on three hits along with a pair of walks across five innings and 85 pitches - 54 for strikes. The 35-year-old New Jersey native, who had eight strikeouts to go over 1,000 for his career (1,002), surrendered two singles and a two-run double by Michael Brantley in his season opener. Veteran Mark Reynolds is 4-for-9 against Morton, who gave up one run over six innings in a no-decision versus Colorado last season.

WALK-OFFS

1. Rays INFs Yandy Diaz (ankle) and Daniel Robertson (illness) left Tuesday's game and are considered day-to-day.

2. Colorado placed LHP Jake McGee (knee sprain) on the 10-day disabled list and recalled RHP Carlos Estevez on Tuesday.

3. Tampa Bay INF Christian Arroyo singled home a run in the sixth inning during his 2019 debut after being recalled Monday.

Minnesota Twins vs. Kansas City Royals Preview and Predictions 04-03-2019 in MLB

The Minnesota Twins attempt to continue their early success when they visit the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday afternoon for the finale of their brief two-game series. Minnesota posted its third win in four games this season Tuesday as it rallied to record a 5-4 victory in 10 innings.

Nelson Cruz went 2-for-5 with three RBIs, giving the Twins a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning with a two-run double before delivering a run-scoring single in the 10th. The 38-year-old Dominican slugger has gone 5-for-10 with five RBIs over his last two games after recording one hit in six at-bats and driving in one run in his first two contests. Adalberto Mondesi was 3-for-5 with two RBIs while Martin Maldonado also collected three hits for Kansas City, which has dropped two straight after opening the year with back-to-back victories. Mondesi's homer was an inside-the-parker - the 99th such hit in franchise history.

TV: 1:15 p.m. ET, FS North (Minnesota), FS Kansas City

PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins RH Kyle Gibson (2018: 10-13, 3.62 ERA) vs. Royals RH Homer Bailey (2018: 1-14, 6.09)

Gibson will be making his season debut after battling E. coli in January and enduring a rough spring. The 31-year-old native of Indiana worked only 7 2/3 innings over three exhibition starts, surrendering five runs and 14 hits. Gibson has posted a 7-5 record with one complete game and a 3.59 ERA in 18 career turns against Kansas City.

Bailey, who was signed to a minor-league contract in February, is expected to join the Royals from extended spring training and attempt to turn around a career that has taken a downward spiral. The 32-year-old Texan went 0-9 over his final 11 starts for Cincinnati in 2018 and has won only nine of his 46 turns over the last four seasons. Bailey allowed six runs over 13 1/3 innings in four games (three starts) this spring but lost his only career start against Minnesota in 2012.

WALK-OFFS

1. Maldonado is 5-for-15 on the season but has yet to register his first RBI of 2019.

2. Minnesota CF Byron Buxton (back) left Tuesday's game after running into the wall in the eighth inning and is day-to-day.

3. Kansas City on Tuesday acquired C Andrew Susac from Baltimore for cash considerations.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. San Diego Padres Preview and Predictions 04-03-2019 in MLB

The Arizona Diamondbacks try for a three-game sweep of the Padres when they meet in San Diego on Wednesday afternoon. Arizona, which dropped three of four at Dodger Stadium to start the season, has scored 40 runs in its first six contests after Tuesday's 8-5 victory featured two home runs by pitcher Zach Greinke, giving the Diamondbacks 14 round-trippers this season.

Arizona, which already has yielded 18 home runs, saw its team ERA drop to 7.57 while its batting average sits at .289 after Tuesday's outburst featured eight extra-base hits. Christian Walker, who was 14-for-84 with six home runs over four years with Baltimore (2014-15) and Arizona (2017-18) entering this season, is 7-for-15 in the early going after belting his third homer on Tuesday. The Padres have allowed 18 runs in their last two games after permitting five in winning three of four over San Francisco to open the campaign. San Diego's Joey Lucchesi is coming off a strong season debut but struggled against Arizona during his rookie campaign of 2018 as he opposes Robbie Ray, who lacked command in his 2019 opener.

TV: 3:40 p.m. ET, FS Arizona, FS San Diego

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks LH Robbie Ray (0-0, 5.40 ERA) vs. Padres LH Joey Lucchesi (1-0, 0.00)

Ray threw only 53 of his 102 pitches for strikes, allowing three runs, five walks and three hits while striking out nine in five innings of Arizona's 13-inning 5-4 victory at Dodger Stadium on Friday. It was an uncharacteristic outing for the 27-year-old Tennessean, who boasts a career 2.7 strikeout-to-walk ratio and blamed his season debut to nerves. Wil Myers is 5-for-22 with two home runs, 10 walks and nine strikeouts against Ray, who is 5-4 with a 4.02 ERA in 13 games versus San Diego.

Lucchesi yielded three hits and two walks while striking out seven in 5 1/3 scoreless innings of a 4-1 victory over San Francisco on Friday. The 25-year-old Californian is tasked with being the No. 2 starter behind left-hander Eric Lauer after going 8-9 in 26 starts last season. Six came against Arizona as he was 0-5 with a 6.07 ERA in those outings, with Nick Ahmed - a career .230 hitter - doing the most damage by going 5-for-13 with two home runs.

WALK-OFFS

1. Padres RF Hunter Renfroe, who hit 26 home runs in each of the last two seasons, belted his first two of 2019 on Tuesday.

2. Diamondbacks CF Adam Jones is batting .379 with three solo home runs in his first six games with the team.

3. San Diego 3B Manny Machado is 5-for-23 this season after going 1-for-5 on Tuesday.

Detroit Tigers vs. New York Yankees Preview and Predictions 04-03-2019 in MLB

The Detroit Tigers have not seen much pop from their offense this season, but the light-hitting team enjoyed some late fireworks to even their three-game series against the host New York Yankees at one victory apiece. The Tigers look to cap their season-opening seven-game road trip on a positive note when they play the series finale on Wednesday afternoon.

After going 0-for-9 in Detroit's first series, Jordy Mercer collected both of his team's hits in Monday's 3-1 setback and followed rookie Dustin Peterson's RBI double with a run-scoring single in the ninth inning of a 3-1 win the following night. Nicholas Castellanos, who batted .379 versus New York last season, had a pair of singles as part of an 11-hit attack for the Tigers. DJ LeMahieu collected his third multi-hit performance of the season for the short-handed Yankees, who have nine players on their injured list. "One of the strengths of our organization is the depth," New York manager Aaron Boone said, before adding that each of the replacements were "capable of producing at the big-league level."

TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FS Detroit, YES (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers LH Matthew Boyd (0-1, 5.40 ERA) vs. Yankees RH Jonathan Loaisiga (2018: 2-0, 5.11)

Boyd's 10-strikeout performance in Friday's 6-0 setback at Toronto was marred by a four-run fourth inning that saw the 28-year-old extend his workload after leaving pitches over the plate. "I felt good the whole time," Boyd said. "I made a few mistakes in the fourth trying to overthrow a little bit. Unfortunately, those runs were the deciding factor in the game. Boyd rebounded from a pair of disastrous career starts against the Yankees by overcoming two solo homers and three runs total in six innings to pick up the win in an 11-7 victory on Sept. 2.

Loaisiga will be recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to make the start in place of veteran left-hander CC Sabathia, who has served his five-game suspension but will be placed on the 10-day injured list with knee and chest ailments. The 24-year-old Loaisiga started four of the nine games in which he appeared last season, recording 33 strikeouts in 24 2/3 innings. Loaisiga posted a 2-1 mark while permitting 13 runs and as many hits -- including four homers -- as he battled for the fifth starter's role in spring training.

WALK-OFFS

1. New York C Gary Sanchez, who sat out on Tuesday after hitting safely in his first four games, is expected to return to the lineup for the series finale.

2. Detroit 3B Jeimer Candelario has seven hits in his last three contests.

3. Yankees RF Aaron Judge has hit safely in all five games this season.

Baltimore Orioles vs. Toronto Blue Jays Preview and Predictions 04-03-2019 in MLB

The Baltimore Orioles hardly resemble the team that lost 115 games in 2018 as they try to complete a three-game sweep of the Blue Jays in Toronto on Wednesday afternoon. Baltimore (4-1) has won four straight on the road for the first time since taking four in a row spanning the 2016 All-Star break after Tuesday's 2-1 victory dropped Toronto to 2-4 on its season-opening seven-game homestand.

The Orioles' Trey Mancini, who hit 24 home runs in each of the last two seasons, is off to a fast start (9-for-20) with a pair of homers, five RBIs and five runs scored. Jonathan Villar has also has sprinted out of the gate (7-for-21), delivering an RBI triple and scoring on Mancini's single in the sixth inning on Tuesday. The Blue Jays have lost three straight - all by one run - and are hitting .182 while holding opponents to a .184 average. Nate Karns will serve as the Orioles' opener for the second time this season while Toronto takes a more traditional approach on the mound with Matt Shoemaker, who was sharp in his season debut.

TV: 4:07 p.m. ET, MASN (Baltimore), Sportsnet (Toronto)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Nate Karns (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. Blue Jays RH Matt Shoemaker (1-0, 0.00)

Karns pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and three walks while striking out one, in Baltimore's 5-3 victory over the Yankees in New York on Saturday. The 31-year-old Pennsylvanian was making his first appearance since May 2017 because of arm injuries, telling reporters: "I'm very grateful to be in this opportunity, and you take it one pitch at a time. I was proud of what I was able to accomplish during those two years injured. It's not done yet." Karns struck out 13 in 13 scoreless innings over two starts against Toronto in 2014 and 2015 while with Tampa Bay.

Shoemaker yielded two hits and two walks while striking out seven in seven innings of the Blue Jays' 6-0 victory over Detroit on Friday. "I grew up a Tigers fan," the 32-year-old Michigan native told reporters. "Cecil Fielder was my guy growing up. It's a little different excitement pitching against your hometown team." The Orioles' Chris Davis is 0-for-10 with seven strikeouts while Villar homered in his only at-bat versus Shoemaker, who is 2-1 with a 2.88 ERA and 33 strikeouts over 25 innings in four starts against Baltimore.

WALK-OFFS

1. Davis is 0-for-12 with seven strikeouts to start the season.

2. Toronto on Tuesday signed OF Randal Grichuk (.247 career batting average) to a five-year, $52 million contract extension.

3. Baltimore became the second team to have four pitchers record a save in their first five games (1991 San Diego Padres), according to STATS, as RH Mike Wright, LH Paul Fry, LH Richard Bleier and RH Miguel Castro each have one.

New York Mets vs. Miami Marlins Preview and Predictions 04-03-2019 in MLB

The New York Mets send reigning National League Cy Young winner Jacob deGrom to the mound Wednesday night seeking to cap an outstanding season-opening road trip with a three-game sweep of the Miami Marlins. The Mets took two of three at Washington to begin the campaign and have scored 13 runs in the first two games of the series at Marlins Park after holding on for a 6-5 victory Tuesday.

New York registered four hits and scored five times in the first inning Tuesday, including a run-scoring single by red-hot Wilson Ramos (8-for-18, four RBIs), and has put 31 on the board while winning four of five to open the season. Trevor Richards will try to cool off the Mets' offense when he takes the hill for the Marlins in the series finale and fellow right-hander deGrom attempts to match a strong effort in his season debut last week. Miami split four games with Colorado to open its season, but coughed up four runs in the ninth inning to lose Monday's game against the Mets 7-3 and outhit New York 16-9 on Tuesday only to strand 14 runners. Starlin Castro has homered in back-to-back games and boasts seven hits in the past four outings for the Marlins while teammate Lewis Brinson matched his total in the first five contests with three hits Tuesday.

TV: 6:10 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), FS Florida

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Jacob deGrom (1-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. Marlins RH Trevor Richards (0-0, 1.50)

DeGrom picked up where he left off last season, allowing five hits and one walk over six scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts to beat Washington on Opening Day. The 30-year-old Florida native had a 1.40 ERA in his last 10 starts last season to seal his first National League Cy Young award despite a 10-9 record. Miami's Brian Anderson is 4-for-10 with a homer versus deGrom, who went 0-2 with a 3.12 ERA in four starts against the Marlins in 2018 and is 4-6 all time in the series.

Richards did not give up a run in his final two outings last season and was solid in his 2019 debut, limiting Colorado to one run on four hits over six innings without being involved in the decision. The 25-year-old Illinois native finished with a 4-9 record and a 4.42 ERA a year ago, striking out 130 across 126 1/3 innings. Ramos is 2-for-3 with a home run versus Richards, who made a pair of starts against the Mets last season and went 0-1 with a 3.09 ERA - striking out 10 over 11 2/3 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Marlins veteran INF Martin Prado is 7-for-10 in the last three games after going hitless in five at-bats during the first two.

2. The Mets bullpen had allowed two runs in 13 innings to start the season before giving up three on eight hits over four frames Tuesday.

3. Anderson is 3-for-9 in the series after managing one hit in 15 at-bats against Colorado.

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Pittsburgh Pirates Preview and Predictions 04-03-2019 in MLB

The St. Louis Cardinals pulled off a dramatic comeback in the series opener against the Pirates and will be looking to complete a sweep of the two-game set Wednesday night in Pittsburgh. After dropping three of four in Milwaukee to open the season, St. Louis erased a four-run deficit to spoil Monday's home opener for the Pirates.

Paul Goldschmidt is riding a four-game RBI streak for the Cardinals, driving in a run in each contest since his three-homer eruption in Game 2. Teammate Kolten Wong also is off to a fast start, hitting safely in each of the first five games while going deep three times. Pittsburgh has received three solid outings from its starting pitchers but saw its bullpen cough up a three-run homer on Opening Day and allow all the runs from the seventh inning on in Monday's 6-5 setback. "When you're in the game, you never have it won until you win it," manager Clint Hurdle said. "It's a good ball club over there. They're always going to battle. We didn't play well enough to win."

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FS Midwest (St. Louis), AT&T Sportsnet-Pittsburgh

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Miles Mikolas (0-1, 9.00 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Jameson Taillon (0-1, 6.00 ERA)

Mikolas was 10-0 in 16 starts away from home in 2018 en route to winning 18 games but he had a rocky season debut on Opening Day, surrendering a career-high three home runs over five innings in a 5-4 loss at Milwaukee. Although he beat the Pirates only once in five starts last season, he permitted two runs or fewer in four of the outings in compiling a 2.90 ERA while striking out 26 and walking four. Adam Frazier is 5-for-15 with two doubles, two triples and two RBIs off Mikolas.

After allowing one run through six innings in his first start, Taillon was sent out for the seventh and wound up taking the loss after he was charged with four runs and six hits in six-plus innings. "I'm not going to lose too much sleep over it. I feel like I'm in a really good place," Taillon said after his streak of 22 straight starts without allowing more than three runs came to an end. The former first-round draft pick was 2-0 with a 2.11 ERA in three starts versus St. Louis last season.

EXTRA BASES

1. St. Louis has struck out a National League-worst 64 times through Monday's games, going down swinging at least 10 times in each contest.

2. Pirates IF Colin Moran homered, doubled and drove in three runs in the series opener.

3. Cardinals LF Marcell Ozuna has a hit in four of the first five games but does not have an RBI.

Chicago Cubs vs. Atlanta Braves Preview and Predictions 04-03-2019 in MLB

Ronald Acuna Jr. has made a tremendous impact for the Atlanta Braves since making his major league debut last April, and he will take the field for Wednesday's home contest against the Chicago Cubs with his future secured. The Braves and the National League Rookie of the Year reportedly agreed to an eight-year, $100-million contract extension on Tuesday's off day after the 21-year-old launched his first homer of the season in Atlanta's 8-0 home-opening victory.

After being outscored 23-11 in a season-opening sweep at Philadelphia, the Braves got homers from Acuna and center fielder Ender Inciarte, three hits from second baseman Ozzie Albies and - most notably - five scoreless, walk-free innings from their bullpen Monday. The Cubs have dropped three in a row after winning their season opener, and pitching remains a problem as Chicago has surrendered 27 runs on 34 hits across 24 1/3 innings during the losing streak. The Cubs were awful defensively in Monday's series opener, committing six errors in a nine-inning game for the first time since 1982. Third baseman Kris Bryant, coming off an injury-marred 2018, has at least one hit in each of Chicago's first four games and is 5-for-16 with two doubles and a homer to start 2019.

TV: 7:20 p.m. ET, ESPN, WGN (Chicago), FS South (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs LH Jon Lester (1-0, 3.00 ERA) vs. Braves RH Julio Teheran (0-1, 5.40)

Lester kicked off his season with a solid start on Opening Day Thursday, holding Texas to two runs on four hits with three strikeouts in six innings. It followed a spring training in which the 35-year-old gave up 18 earned runs on 23 hits over 15 1/3 innings across five starts. Lester, who shared the National League lead with 18 wins a season ago, did not face Atlanta in 2018 and is 6-2 with a 2.47 ERA in nine career starts against the Braves.

Teheran made his sixth consecutive Opening Day start for the Braves on Thursday in Philadelphia and took the loss, but pitched well in giving up three runs on four hits with two walks and seven strikeouts across five innings. The 28-year-old, who was bumped out of Atlanta's playoff starting rotation last October, struck out 21 with only two walks in 17 innings during spring training to solidify a rotation spot. Teheran is 3-1 with a 3.44 ERA in eight lifetime starts against the Cubs, winning his only start against Chicago last season.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cubs LF Kyle Schwarber, who went 5-for-12 with two homers in the season-opening series at Texas, did not start Monday in favor of rookie OF Mark Zagunis.

2. In 115 career games, Acuna has 27 homers, 66 RBIs, 17 stolen bases and a .291/.366/.548 slash line.

3. Chicago's bullpen allowed only one unearned run on two hits in 3 2/3 innings Monday.

Houston Astros vs. Texas Rangers Preview and Predictions 04-03-2019 in MLB

The Houston Astros have averaged 2.5 runs in their first six games, leaving some to wonder if they left their offense behind in spring training. Houston looks to get untracked Wednesday, when it visits the Texas Rangers for the rubber match of their three-game series.

Jose Altuve has four hits in his first 23 at-bats for the Astros, who went 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position in Tuesday's 6-4 loss to the Rangers. George Springer and Alex Bregman recorded two hits apiece, but Justin Verlander allowed four runs and six hits over four innings as he failed to complete five frames for just the second time while with the Astros. Asdrubal Cabrera led the charge for Texas with his third home run while Joey Gallo delivered a two-run single and Jose Leclerc recorded his third save. Shin-Soo Choo doubled and tripled from the leadoff spot in the victory and has notched multiple hits in six of his last 12 games against Houston.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet-Southwest (Houston), FS Southwest Plus (Texas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Gerrit Cole (0-1, 1.50 ERA) vs. Rangers LH Mike Minor (0-1, 11.57)

Cole took the loss against Tampa Bay on Friday after allowing four runs - one earned - and five hits while striking out 10 over six frames. "He was really explosive," Houston manager A.J. Hinch told reporters. "He's got some of the best stuff in the league." Nomar Mazara is hitless in 11 at-bats against the two-time All-Star, who owns a 3-0 record and 2.25 ERA in five career starts versus Texas - four of which took place last season.

Minor is looking to bounce back from a rough first outing against the Chicago Cubs on Thursday, when he allowed six runs and five hits over 4 2/3 innings. "I wasn't locating anything," Minor told reporters. "I was kind of grinding all day, even though I was getting out of the innings." The 31-year-old Tennessean is 2-2 with a 4.74 ERA in 11 career games (eight starts) against Houston and has limited Bregman to three hits in 15 at-bats.

Boston Red Sox vs. Oakland Athletics Preview and Predictions 04-03-2019 in MLB

The Boston Red Sox finally received an admirable performance from a starting pitcher, but their offense was stagnant for a second straight game. Boston attempts to put it all together when it visits the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday for the third contest of their four-game series.

Ace Chris Sale limited Oakland to one run and three hits in six innings Tuesday but suffered the hard-luck loss as the Red Sox were shut out for the second consecutive contest after scoring a total of 24 runs in their season-opening four-game series at Seattle. Mike Fiers combined with three relievers to post what has become an expected strong performance by Oakland's pitching staff. The Athletics have registered three shutouts over their last six games and have yielded a total of nine runs in that span, with six coming in their lone loss during the stretch. Slugger Khris Davis failed to homer Tuesday after going deep in four of his previous five contests while Matt Chapman has belted a shot in each of the first two games of the series.

TV: 10:07 p.m. ET, NESN (Boston), NBCS California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox RH Nathan Eovaldi (0-0, 10.80 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Marco Estrada (0-0, 2.45)

Boston's starters struggled in the season-opening series against Seattle, and Eovaldi was no exception. The 29-year-old Texan managed to last five innings in Friday's loss and escaped with a no-decision despite being battered for six runs on eight hits - three homers - and two walks. Eovaldi has made six career starts against Oakland, going 1-2 while yielding 16 runs and 40 hits over 35 frames.

Estrada, who signed a one-year contract in January after spending four seasons with Toronto, had issues in his team debut but was superb in his second turn in the rotation. The 35-year-old Mexican gave up three runs and five hits - two homers - over five frames against Seattle in his first start with Oakland before allowing two hits in six scoreless innings versus the Los Angeles Angels on Friday. Estrada is 4-8 with a 4.68 ERA in 17 career appearances (15 starts) against Boston.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Red Sox have surrendered 15 home runs in their first six games, with the starting pitchers serving up 12.

2. Oakland 1B Matt Olson (hand) had his cast and stitches removed Monday but still is more than a month away from resuming baseball-related activities.

3. Boston 2B Dustin Pedroia (knee) played nine innings of an extended spring training game Tuesday - two days before beginning a rehab assignment with Class A Greenville - and could be activated for the home opener April 9.

San Francisco Giants vs. Los Angeles Dodgers Preview and Predictions 04-03-2019 in MLB

The Los Angeles Dodgers have tied a major-league record with 17 home runs in their first six games and have a visit to homer-friendly Coors Field coming up this weekend. Before heading to Colorado, however, the Dodgers host the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday for the rubber match of their three-game series.

Cody Bellinger crushed a grand slam off Madison Bumgarner in Tuesday's 6-5 victory, giving the Dodgers' slugger five home runs and 12 RBIs. Hyun-Jin Ryu tossed seven strong innings while Enrique Hernandez and A.J. Pollock had two hits apiece for the Dodgers, who have homered in 10 straight games dating back to last season. San Francisco added to its outfield mix on Tuesday by trading pitchers Juan De Paula and Derek Law and infielder Alen Hanson to Toronto for 30-year-old veteran Kevin Pillar, who is expected to start in right field on Wednesday. A lifetime .260 hitter, Pillar is likely to see regular playing time in a Giants' lineup that has averaged 2.3 runs in its first six games.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants LH Derek Holland (0-1, 6.75 ERA) vs. Dodgers RH Ross Stripling (0-0, 0.00)

Holland gave up three runs and four hits with five strikeouts over four innings in Friday's 4-1 loss to San Diego. The 32-year-old native of Ohio is back for his second season with the Giants after going 7-9 with a 3.57 ERA in 36 games (30 starts) last year. Hernandez is 4-for-7 with a home run against Holland, who is 0-3 with a 4.56 ERA in seven career contests (five starts) versus Los Angeles - including 0-2 with a 3.07 mark in three starts at Dodger Stadium.

With Clayton Kershaw and Rich Hill both sidelined due to injury, Stripling got the call on Friday against Arizona and pitched scoreless three-hit ball into the sixth inning. The 29-year-old Texan was named to the All-Star team last season and finished the campaign with an 8-6 record and 3.02 ERA in 33 games (21 starts). Stripling is 1-2 with a 2.86 ERA in 10 career contests (three starts) against San Francisco and has limited Brandon Crawford to a pair of hits in 11 at-bats.

2. Hill (knee) will throw a bullpen session on Saturday and hopes to rejoin the rotation by the end of April.

3. Giants OF Michael Reed was designated for assignment to make room for Pillar.

Indiana Pacers vs. Detroit Pistons Preview and Predictions 04-03-2019 in NBA

The Indiana Pacers are battling for the No. 4 seed in the first round of the playoffs and snapped a three-game slide by turning away the Detroit Pistons 111-102 at home on Monday. The Pistons, who are fighting for one of the final three spots in the East playoff bracket, get a chance for some quick revenge when they host the Pacers on Wednesday.

Nothing much changed in the East on Monday, except sixth-place Detroit came one game closer to locking up its spot in the postseason as Brooklyn, Miami, Orlando and Charlotte all lost as well. "Any time you lose in a tight playoff race, you feel like you've missed an opportunity," Pistons reserve point guard Ish Smith told the team's website. "If we'd have won those during the road (trip last week), we would've had a cushion. If we beat Cleveland (in a mid-March road game), we could've had a cushion. But they're playing for playoff position as well, so it's huge for us to keep playing, keep pushing, keep pressing." Indiana is tied with Boston for the No. 4 spot, but the Celtics own the tiebreaker, and the Pacers need to avoid looking ahead to a home date with Boston on Friday. "We're trying to (turn a new page)," Indiana power forward Thaddeus Young told reporters after snapping the losing streak on Monday. "The biggest thing is just believing and staying the course."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Indiana, FS Detroit

ABOUT THE PACERS (46-32): Indiana did not have a player reach 20 points on Monday but shot 54.5 percent from the floor and placed seven scorers in double figures, including reserve guard Aaron Holiday, who scored 10 points on 3-of-4 shooting and handed out five assists in 25 minutes. "I think he's going to be a really good guard in this league," Pacers coach Nate McMillan told reporters of Holiday. "He's going to be here to play and help us. He keeps himself ready to play and when he's called upon, he's played solid minutes for us. I thought he did a solid job. We kept him in there and he did a good job of keeping Jackson in front and running the offense for us." Holiday was getting extra playing time in the absence of starting point guard Darren Collison, who is day-to-day with a groin injury.

ABOUT THE PISTONS (39-38): All-Star forward Blake Griffin (knee) missed his second consecutive game on Monday and his presence was missed in the paint on the defensive end. "I think they were getting real deep paint points," Detroit point guard Reggie Jackson told reporters of Indiana. "Guards, including myself, defensively we have to be better at keeping their guards out of the paint, allowing our bigs to get back to them so they can't come at our bigs with force. As the game went along, they became the aggressor. We get them in two days. We have to come out and hit first and hit often until the end of the game." Center Andre Drummond tried to make up for the loss of Griffin and collected 18 points, 17 rebounds, five assists and four steals in the loss.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Pacers SG Wesley Matthews (hamstring) sat out Monday and is day-to-day.

2. Pistons SG Luke Kennard is day-to-day with a foot injury.

3. Detroit knocked off Indiana 113-109 at home on Feb. 25 - its third straight home win in the series.

PREDICTION: Pacers 110, Pistons 106

New York Knicks vs. Orlando Magic Preview and Predictions 04-03-2019 in NBA

Orlando opens its final homestand of the season Wednesday night against the NBA-worst New York Knicks in an absolute must-win for the Magic in their pursuit of a playoff spot. After splitting four games on the road, capped by Monday's 121-109 loss at Toronto, Orlando found itself a half-game out of the eighth and final playoff position in the Eastern Conference but also just one game out of seventh and 1 1/2 short of sixth.

It has games against the Knicks and Atlanta at home before ending the regular season at Boston and Charlotte. "It's impossible not to look," Magic guard Evan Fournier told reporters when asked Monday if he was paying attention to the scoreboard. "We're the ninth seed right now, so we have to look at other teams." The Knicks have nearly clinched the worst record in the league but they are coming off a rare victory, riding a career-high 24 points from Luke Kornet to a 113-105 win over the Chicago Bulls on Monday. The triumph snapped a six-game slide for New York, which is flirting with the worst record in franchise history (17-65 in 2014-15).

TV: 7 p.m. ET, MSG (New York), FS Florida (Orlando)

ABOUT THE KNICKS (15-62): Kornet and the other four starters each scored at least 14 points and the quintet combined to shoot 15-of-27 from 3-point range in the win over the Bulls. "We were moving the ball, getting out in transition and playing together," guard Damyean Dotson, who made 6-of-7 from long range, told reporters. "When we move it like that, we get more shots and we are more efficient." Rookie center Mitchell Robinson received his second consecutive start and finished with 14 points on 4-of-4 from the field to go along with 10 rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots.

ABOUT THE MAGIC (38-40): Orlando raced to an early lead at Toronto before giving up 33 points in both the second and third quarters as the defensive lapses began to pile up. "We've got to know who we are," coach Steve Clifford told reporters. "We ain't scoring 115 every night. We don't have that kind of roster. We have to defend, whether we're scoring or not." Fournier led the way on the other end with 21 points after averaging 11 over his previous three games.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Magic SF Wesley Iwundu made all seven of his shot attempts Monday and is 13-for-14 from the floor over a three-game stretch.

2. Orlando has won seven straight home games.

3. The Magic took the first two meetings before New York won at home 108-103 on Feb. 26 behind Robinson, who had 17 points, 14 boards and six blocks.

PREDICTION: Magic 113, Knicks 100

Chicago Bulls vs. Washington Wizards Preview and Predictions 04-03-2019 in NBA

The Washington Wizards were eliminated from the postseason last week but are still pushing and capped a four-game road trip with a 95-90 victory at playoff-bound Denver on Sunday. The Wizards will try to make it back-to-back victories when they host the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday.

Washington, which reshaped its roster at the trade deadline by dealing small forward Otto Porter Jr. to the Bulls in a move that brought back forwards Bobby Portis Jr. and Jabari Parker, is trying to build a team that can compete next year and is not sitting All-Star guard Bradley Beal the rest of the way. Beal, who collected 17 points and six assists in Sunday's win, is developing a chemistry with the likes of Parker, Portis, rookie forward Troy Brown Jr. and center Thomas Bryant as the season winds down. Chicago would like to spend the remainder of the regular season developing chemistry among its core players but is having trouble keeping them on the floor. The Bulls are losers of five in a row and opened the two-game trip with a 113-105 loss at NBA-worst New York on Monday as four of their five starters sat out the contest.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NBCS Chicago, NBCS Washington

ABOUT THE BULLS (21-57): Chicago is missing point guard Kris Dunn (back), guard Zach LaVine (thigh), power forward Lauri Markkanen (fatigue), Porter (shoulder) and rookie center Wendell Carter Jr. (thumb), leaving plenty of minutes for players trying to prove themselves for next season. Forward JaKarr Sampson made the most of his opportunity with 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting in 30 minutes off the bench while making his team debut on Monday. "The one thing I like about JaKarr is he just competes," Bulls coach Jim Boylen told reporters. "You throw him out there at three, you throw him out there at four, you throw him out there at five, he figures it out. He gets downhill, he embraces contact, collision. He's just a tough, hard playing dude."

ABOUT THE WIZARDS (32-46): Brown, who was drafted 15th overall by Washington last June, struggled to break into the rotation until March and steadily increased his production throughout the month. The Oregon product logged a season-high 42 minutes on Sunday and scored a season-high 24 points on 9-of-16 shooting, including 5-of-7 from beyond the arc. "I thought we competed like I knew we would," Wizards coach Scott Brooks told reporters. "It was great to see Troy have a great game, make some shots. A lot of work from Troy all year long, it's definitely showing."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Bulls C Robin Lopez scored a season-high 29 points on Monday after being held to two points in a loss to Toronto on Saturday.

2. The Wizards fired president Ernie Grunfeld on Tuesday after 16 seasons.

3. Chicago outlasted Washington 126-120 in overtime at home on March 20 and took two of the first three meetings.

Boston Celtics vs. Miami Heat Preview and Predictions 04-03-2019 in NBA

The Boston Celtics continue their fight for homecourt advantage in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs while the Miami Heat are desperate to hang onto the eighth and final playoff spot as the teams finish a home-and-home set Wednesday in Florida. The Celtics got past the Heat at home 110-105 on Monday to remain in fourth place in the East by virtue of a tiebreaker with fifth-place Indiana.

"We'll see when we get there," guard Kyrie Irving told reporters of the first round of the playoffs. "I'm pretty sure I think we know who we're going to play, but we'll see how it pans out." Irving had 25 points in the contest as he helped hand Miami just its fifth loss in the last 16 games, leaving the Heat a half-game up on ninth-place Orlando in the East. Goran Dragic led Miami with 30 points while Dwyane Wade added 17 in his final regular-season visit to Boston. Following Wednesday's contest, the Heat play three of their final four games on the road, including a finale at fellow playoff hopeful Brooklyn on April 10.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBATV, NBCS Boston, FS Sun (Miami)

ABOUT THE CELTICS (46-32): Center Al Horford picked up his first triple-double in a Boston uniform with 19 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists against Miami on Monday. "I don't think we can overstate his importance to our team," coach Brad Stevens told reporters of Horford, who is averaging 19.8 points, 7.6 rebounds and 5.6 assists over his last five games. Forward Gordon Hayward chipped in 11 points off the bench and has reached double figures in a season-high five straight games.

ABOUT THE HEAT (38-39): Center Bam Adebayo contributed 18 points and 14 rebounds at Boston for his third double-double in the last five games. Each of those contests has been decided by single digits as Miami fights for a spot in the postseason amid a string of games with near-playoff intensity. "We just could not get it over the hump to close out the game," coach Erik Spoelstra told reporters Monday after his team missed a host of 3-pointers down the stretch to finish 10-of-37 from beyond the arc.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Heat SG Josh Richardson (heel) missed three straight games and SF Justise Winslow (thigh) sat out each of the last nine.

2. Celtics SF Jaylen Brown (back spasms) missed Monday's contest and is day-to-day.

3. The home team has won each of the first three meetings.

Philadelphia 76ers vs. Atlanta Hawks Preview and Predictions 04-03-2019 in NBA

The Philadelphia 76ers figure to end up with the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference but aren't delivering a strong finishing kick. Philadelphia has lost three of its last five games entering Wednesday's matchup against the host Atlanta Hawks, with two of the setbacks coming by 20 or more points.

All-Star center Joel Embiid (knee) is expected to miss his third straight game while Jimmy Butler (back) probably will miss his second consecutive contest. The 76ers badly missed both players on Monday, when they were drubbed 122-102 by Dallas in the second contest of their three-game road trip. Atlanta suffered a 117-111 defeat in San Antonio on Tuesday to reach the 50-loss mark for the second straight season. Kent Bazemore scored 26 points on 10-of-16 shooting after making just 4-of-31 shots over his previous four games.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBCS Philadelphia, FS Southeast (Atlanta)

ABOUT THE 76ERS (49-28): JJ Redick (26 points) and Tobias Harris (25) combined for half the team's points in the loss to Dallas. Redick made 4-of-11 3-point attempts while the rest of the squad was a combined 2-of-22, and Harris scored 25 for the second consecutive contest. Jonah Bolden (two points) and James Ennis III (four points) were in the starting lineup in place of Embiid and Butler, and both players were just 1-of-6 shooting.

ABOUT THE HAWKS (28-50): Second-year power forward John Collins is slated to return to the lineup after being rested on Tuesday. Atlanta knocked down 12 3-pointers in the loss to the Spurs to raise its team-record total to 1,011. "It's not so much the number of 3s we make, it's the type of 3s we make," coach Lloyd Pierce told reporters. "We're moving the defense and we're creating the shots we want and are seeking out. It's a result of our ball movement."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Hawks are 2-1 against the 76ers this season, including a 129-127 home win on March 23.

2. Atlanta F Taurean Prince (foot) likely will miss his fourth straight game.

3. Philadelphia reserve PG T.J. McConnell scored 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting against Dallas after averaging 2.3 on 6-of-24 shooting over his previous six games.

Toronto Raptors vs. Brooklyn Nets Preview and Predictions 04-03-2019 in NBA

The Brooklyn Nets are trying to lock up a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference but are struggling through a tough portion of the schedule with losses in three of the last four games - all against playoff teams. The Nets will face another team that already punched its ticket to the playoffs when they host the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday.

Brooklyn, which would start the postseason at the second-seeded Raptors if the season ended now, sits seventh in the East but is only one game ahead of ninth-place Orlando and a half-game clear of eighth-place Miami while sitting a half-game behind sixth-place Detroit in a tightly-packed race. "Yeah, that definitely helps us," Nets guard Caris LeVert told reporters about the Pistons, Heat and Magic also losing on Monday. "I'm not going to lie and say we didn't look at that. We've just got to focus on ourselves and get as many wins as we can." Toronto is tuning up for the postseason with wins in its last four games and is managing to still find the win column without extending any of its players. No starter logged more that 28 minutes in Monday's 121-109 home win over the Magic and the Raptors will continue to monitor minutes throughout the remainder of the regular season.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, TSN, RDS2 (Toronto), YES (Brooklyn)

ABOUT THE RAPTORS (55-23): Toronto shooting guard Danny Green only needed 28 minutes to score a season-high 29 points while going 11-of-15 from the floor, including 7-of-10 from 3-point range, on Monday. Green, who suffered a jammed thumb in the win and had X-rays come back negative, is 16-of-23 from beyond the arc over the last four games. The Raptors got another solid game on Monday from the center duo of Marc Gasol and Serge Ibaka, who combined for 28 points on 11-of-18 shooting (3-of-4 from beyond the arc) and 10 rebounds in the win.

ABOUT THE NETS (39-39): Brooklyn dropped a 131-121 decision to the NBA-best Milwaukee Bucks on Monday but got an encouraging performance off the bench from LeVert, who scored 24 points on 8-of-15 shooting in his best game since missing nearly three months with a foot injury. "It was his best game," Nets coach Kenny Atkinson told reporters. "From a confidence level and a physical level, that was the Caris from the beginning of the year. I loved how athletic he looked and how fast he looked. We stuck with him. He performed at a high level, and that bodes well for us going forward." Brooklyn will only play postseason contenders the rest of the way, with a two-game trip to Milwaukee and Indiana following Wednesday's home game and a home date against the Miami Heat to end the regular season.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Raptors SF OG Anunoby (concussion) missed the last three games and his return date is uncertain.

2. Nets SF Joe Harris is 12-of-18 from 3-point range over the last three games.

3. The home team took each of the first three meetings, with Brooklyn edging Toronto 106-105 in overtime at home on Dec. 7.

Charlotte Hornets vs. New Orleans Pelicans Preview and Predictions 04-03-2019 in NBA

An ill-timed losing streak has put the Charlotte Hornets in a virtual must-win situation entering Wednesday night's visit to the New Orleans Pelicans. The Hornets lost the first three legs of their four-game road trip to sink three games out of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with five to play.

"There's still a chance, and as long as there is still a chance (we have to) keep fighting," Charlotte guard Jeremy Lamb told reporters after the team fell 111-102 at Utah on Monday, despite 47 points from Kemba Walker. After they leave New Orleans, the Hornets host Toronto and then go back on the road for two more before the regular-season finale at home against fellow playoff hopeful Orlando. The Pelicans have long been out of the race in the West and are fading fast with 10 losses in their last 12 games. They've allowed at least 130 points four times in that stretch, including Sunday's 130-102 defeat against the Los Angeles Lakers at home.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FS Southeast (Charlotte), FS New Orleans

ABOUT THE HORNETS (35-42): Walker tried to will his team to a big road win at Utah, scoring 22 points in the fourth quarter alone. "I did get into a good rhythm," he told reporters. "I was trying to get downhill, trying to get to the free-throw line. Made a few 3s. It was a little too late." The rest of Charlotte's starting lineup had six total points as forwards Marvin Williams and Miles Bridges combined for 50 scoreless minutes on 0-of-9 shooting.

ABOUT THE PELICANS (32-46): Superstar forward Anthony Davis (back) missed his third straight game in the loss to the Lakers and Julius Randle had to leave the game with a finger injury after scoring 17 points in 23 minutes. Randle also had five of the team's 24 turnovers, which led to 32 points for Los Angeles, many coming in a 44-point third quarter. "You're not going to win any basketball games where you're in the thirties as far as points off turnovers," coach Alvin Gentry told reporters. "A lot of their points in the third quarter came off of turnovers. We had 12 turnovers at the half against a team that doesn't really force a lot of turnovers. We just didn't play very well."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. New Orleans PF Christian Wood, acquired last month after Milwaukee put him on waivers, is averaging 21 points, 9.7 rebounds, 2.7 blocks and 2.3 steals over his last three games.

2. Hornets C Cody Zeller (knee) has missed 11 games in a row but the team has yet to rule him out for the rest of the season.

3. The Pelicans have won five straight meetings.

Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Dallas Mavericks Preview and Predictions 04-03-2019 in NBA

Despite being out of the playoff race, the Dallas Mavericks are not going quietly down the stretch. They will seek their first three-game winning streak since December when they continue a three-game homestand against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday.

Justin Jackson scored 24 points and five others had at least 12 for Dallas in Monday's 122-102 win over Philadelphia to begin the homestand, the Mavericks' third win over a playoff team in a 10-day span. Dallas played its second straight game without star rookie Luka Doncic, who is hampered by a thigh contusion and still considered day-to-day. The Timberwolves wrapped up a 1-3 homestand with a 132-122 loss to Portland on Monday. The visit to Dallas marks the penultimate road game for Minnesota, which is 5-19 away from home against Western Conference teams.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, FS North (Minnesota), FS Southwest (Dallas)

ABOUT THE TIMBERWOLVES (34-43): Star center Karl-Anthony Towns carried Minnesota through an otherwise difficult season but the big man might be hitting a bit of a wall. He was 6-of-21 from the floor in the loss to the Trail Blazers and is shooting 34.7 percent from the floor over his last four games. Forward Andrew Wiggins is trending in the other direction with seven straight games of 20 points or more.

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (31-46): There are just three home games left for Dallas, which means three more chances for the home fans to catch a glimpse of team legend Dirk Nowitzki before he is expected to retire. "If you can get here for the last game, you want to be here for the last game in Dallas," team owner Mark Cuban told the media. "It's going to be a special night whether he likes it or wants it or not." The 40-year-old Nowitzki needs nine rebounds to pass Elgin Baylor (11,463) and move into 26th place on the NBA's all-time list and just 12 boards on the defensive end to become the fifth player in league history with 10,000.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Doncic had 26 points to lead Dallas to a 140-136 win in the first meeting at home on Oct. 20 and then 29 more in a 119-115 victory at Minnesota on Jan. 11.

2. Timberwolves C Gorgui Dieng scored a season-high 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting in the loss to Portland.

3. Mavericks C Salah Mejri notched his sixth career double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds versus Philadelphia.

San Antonio Spurs vs. Denver Nuggets Preview and Predictions 04-03-2019 in NBA

The Denver Nuggets surely saw their chances at earning the No. 1 seed evaporate and will now concentrate on protecting the No. 2 spot when they host the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday. Denver suffered a disappointing 116-102 setback at Golden State on Tuesday when a win would have moved it into a first-place tie.

The Nuggets are two games behind the Warriors with five to play after a disappointing performance, with streaking Houston just 1 1/2 behind. "It was turnovers the whole night," Nuggets coach Michael Malone told reporters. "We couldn't take care of the ball. You give up 21 points off (16) turnovers in this building, you're going to make it really hard to be in the game." San Antonio is battling Oklahoma City for the seventh seed and it rallied for a 117-111 home win over Atlanta on Tuesday. "Stops win basketball games," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich told reporters after his squad outscored the Hawks 31-21 in the final quarter. "Sure, you've got to make shots, but when we lose these games, it's because we don't make stops - especially in the fourth quarter."

TV: 9 p.m. ET, FS Southwest (San Antonio), Altitude (Denver)

ABOUT THE SPURS (45-33): Derrick White broke out of a slump with 23 points on 10-of-12 shooting against the Hawks. "He had a couple of games where he struggled, but sometimes you've got to embrace the struggle to understand how to get out of it and what you need to do to get back to yourself," standout shooting guard DeMar DeRozan told reporters of White. The 24-year-old was just 7-of-30 shooting over the previous four games and averaged only five points during the stretch.

ABOUT THE NUGGETS (51-26): Denver has dropped four of its last six games and its offense has been stagnant as only a 36-point fourth quarter allowed the club to reach 100 for just the second time in six games. "We're getting good shots, we're just not making a lot of shots that we normally make," point guard Jamal Murray told reporters. "I don't think our offense is the problem." The evidence said differently as Denver shot just 37.5 percent from the field - including 7-of-31 from 3-point range - despite the late flurry.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Spurs are 2-1 against the Nuggets this season but have lost three straight in Denver.

2. Denver SG Gary Harris is averaging just 7.8 points on 12-of-36 shooting over his last four games.

3. DeRozan scored 29 points against Atlanta and has tallied 25 or more in three of the past four contests.

PREDICTION: Nuggets 110, Spurs 105

Memphis Grizzlies vs. Portland Trail Blazers Preview and Predictions 04-03-2019 in NBA

The Portland Trail Blazers are battling the Houston Rockets for the third seed in the Western Conference. The Trail Blazers look to take another step toward securing that spot when they host the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday.

Portland has won 16 of its last 21 games after registering a 132-122 road victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday. Rodney Hood was inserted into the starting shooting guard position normally held by injured CJ McCollum (knee) and scored 21 points, his second-highest output with the club since being acquired from the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Grizzlies have dropped six of their past nine contests and opened a three-game road swing by being trounced 113-96 by the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday. Point guard Mike Conley sat out that game with an ankle injury but hopes to return against Portland as he scored a career-best 40 in a 120-111 home win over the Trail Blazers on March 5.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, FS Southeast (Memphis), NBCS Northwest (Portland)

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (31-46): Center Jonas Valanciunas is done for the season after suffering a Grade 2 sprain of his right ankle during the loss to the Clippers. Valanciunas averaged 19.9 points and 10.7 rebounds in 19 games for the Grizzlies after being acquired from Toronto in February in the Marc Gasol trade and had recorded five straight double-doubles prior to the injury. "It's really tough to see this happen at the end of the season," Memphis coach J.B. Bickerstaff told reporters. "It's a setback for our players and our fans. Injuries have made it frustrating but our guys still have no quit in them."

ABOUT THE TRAIL BLAZERS (49-28): Reserve swingman Evan Turner stood out with 13 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists against the Timberwolves to record his first triple-double in exactly four years, that one coming as a member of the Boston Celtics. Turner made all five of his field-goal attempts in 25 minutes of action while playing arguably his best game of the campaign. "I just do what I'm asked. Whatever my minutes are, just go with the flow," Turner told reporters. "Play defense. I've been distributing. That's pretty much it. I got the most minutes I've got in a while and I made shots so I'm just going with the flow. I just ride the wave and the most important thing is winning and closing the game."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Grizzlies are 2-1 against the Trail Blazers this season but Portland prevailed 99-92 on Dec. 19 in the previous meeting in the Rose City.

2. Trail Blazers C Enes Kanter had 20 points, 11 rebounds and a season-best four blocked shots in the win over Minnesota.

Utah Jazz vs. Phoenix Suns Preview and Predictions 04-03-2019 in NBA

Phoenix Suns guard Devin Booker took the prolific scoring down a notch on Monday but finally managed to guide his team into the win column with a 122-113 triumph over Cleveland that snapped a six-game slide. Booker and the Suns will get a stiffer test on Wednesday, when the playoff-bound Utah Jazz visit.

Booker scored at least 48 points in three consecutive games, starting with 59 in a 125-92 loss at Utah on March 25, but found more team success with 25 points and 13 assists in Monday's victory. "We had fun tonight," Booker told reporters. "We played together. Everybody was involved. We had some big runs. We fell apart at times, but we stuck together and came together when we needed each other the most." The Jazz are trying to lock up the No. 5 seed in the Western Conference and still have an outside shot at No. 4 as they bring a five-game winning streak into Wednesday's matchup. "We're getting connected, and that's great - even with guys out," Utah point guard Ricky Rubio told reporters after a 111-102 win over the Charlotte Hornets on Monday. "Everybody's stepping in and doing their job and raising the level even more."

TV: 10 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain (Utah), FS Arizona (Phoenix)

ABOUT THE JAZZ (47-30): Utah won 10 of its last 11 games and held the Hornets to 40 percent from the floor on Monday, including 7-of-30 from 3-point range. "Everybody that steps on the floor knows who they are and what they can contribute to the team, so it was a good effort by our group," Jazz coach Quin Snyder told reporters. "Particularly, defensively we were really good for the majority of the game, and then we had some foul trouble and (Hornets All-Star guard) Kemba (Walker) got going. But I thought the whole group was ready to play and played together." Utah will play its next three against non-playoff teams before hosting Denver and visiting the Los Angeles Clippers to finish out the regular season.

ABOUT THE SUNS (18-60): Phoenix is close to clinching one of the three worst records in the NBA and the best odds at the No. 1 pick in the draft, but coach Igor Kokoskov is pushing his team to keep playing hard. "It's very important," Kokoskov told reporters. "That's what we owe to the fans who come here. We don't have an impressive record by any means. We have a talented team who's going to be the future, but fans have not quit on this team. We don't quit on the fans starting with the bench and the players on the court." Former top-four pick Dragan Bender is trying to prove he should get a spot on the Suns' team of the future and delivered 12 points and 10 rebounds on Monday for his first double-double since Jan. 22.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Suns rookie C Deandre Ayton (ankle) sat out Monday and is day-to-day.

2. Jazz PF Derrick Favors (back) and SG Kyle Korver (knee) are both questionable for Wednesday.

3. Utah is enjoying a six-game winning streak in the series and breezed to a 114-97 triumph at Phoenix on March 13.

PREDICTION: Jazz 118, Suns 103

Houston Rockets vs. LA Clippers Preview and Predictions 04-03-2019 in NBA

The Los Angeles Clippers look to record their 14th victory in 16 games when they host the Houston Rockets on Wednesday. Houston also is hot with 17 wins in its plast 20 contests after rolling to a 130-105 victory in Sacramento on Tuesday.

The Rockets are one-half game ahead of Portland for the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference, while the Clippers are one-half game behind fifth-place Utah. "You don't need to use your energy to look at the rankings," Los Angeles forward Danilo Gallinari told reporters of the closeness of the West race. "You need to use your energy to win games." The Rockets matched the NBA record of 26 3-pointers that they set earlier this season in the rout of the Kings and have made 20 or more on 16 occasions. Houston reached the 50-win mark for the fifth time in six seasons as star guard James Harden poured in 36 points.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, NBA TV, AT&T SportsNet-Southwest (Houston), Prime Ticket (Los Angeles)

ABOUT THE ROCKETS (50-28): Harden also recorded 10 assists against Sacramento and knocked down seven 3-pointers to raise his season count to 360, which is second-best in NBA history behind Stephen Curry (402 in 2015-16). Sharpshooter Eric Gordon knocked down five 3-pointers during a 20-point effort against the Kings and has made 20 over the last five games despite missing all five of his attempts against Milwaukee on March 26. Kenneth Faried (knee) returned from a three-game absence to produce 12 points and 11 rebounds in 21 minutes.

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (47-31): Gallinari recorded 27 points and a season-best 15 rebounds in Sunday's 113-96 home victory over Memphis and leads the club with career-best averages of 19.8 and 6.2. The 30-year-old Gallinari has registered a career-high seven double-doubles this season after suffering through a tough first season with the club, when he shot just 39.8 percent from the field and saw action in only 21 games due to multiple injuries. Backup shooting guard Lou Williams scored 17 points against the Grizzlies and has recorded 15 or more in 20 of his last 21 contests.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Clippers are 2-0 against the Rockets this season, winning by three points at home and by 20 in Houston.

2. Rockets backup SG Gerald Green (thigh) is expected to miss his sixth straight game.

3. Los Angeles PG Patrick Beverley (hip pointer) is questionable for Wednesday's contest.

Ottawa Senators vs. New York Rangers Preview and Predictions 04-03-2019 in NHL

The Ottawa Senators are in full-fledged rebuilding mode after unloading their top offensive forwards at the trade deadline, but they were playing fairly well until running into the league's best team. Owning the worst record in the NHL, the Senators hit the road for the final time this season when they visit the New York Rangers on Wednesday night.

Ottawa had won five of eight but was unable to keep up with the Tampa Bay Lightning in a 5-2 loss on Monday night in the finale of a four-game homestand. The Senators have won three of their last four meetings against New York, but they enter the final three games of the season with the worst road record in the league. The Rangers, who also are in the midst of a rebuild that started prior to the 2018 trade deadline, were denied a third straight victory in Monday's 4-2 loss to the rival New Jersey Devils. "The thing that surprised me was how intense the game was for two teams out of the playoffs," New York coach David Quinn said of the matchup between the two worst teams in the Metropolitan Division.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, Sportsnet, Sportsnet1 (Ottawa), MSG-Plus (New York)

ABOUT THE SENATORS (28-45-6): Rookie Brady Tkachuk, the No. 4 overall pick in last year's draft, has scored five times in the past seven games to boost his season total to 21 goals. Tkachuk eclipsed Alexandre Daigle for the most tallies by a teenager in franchise history. "He came in really wanting to prove that he was capable of playing in the league," interim coach Marc Crawford said. "Everything we give him, he takes and just tries to implement his own identity on to the areas that we gave him. What I like most about him is he doesn't waste any shifts."

ABOUT THE RANGERS (31-35-13): Rookie Filip Chytil, selected in the first round in 2017, has not enjoyed the same success as Tkachuk but the 19-year-old finally put an end to a 22-game goal drought with his 11th tally. Fellow forward Pavel Buchnevich was riding a career-long eight-game point streak and had scored in back-to-back contests before he was forced to sit out against New Jersey after going into the concussion protocol Sunday. "We kept him out for precautionary reasons, but there's a pretty good chance you'll see him Wednesday," Quinn said.

OVERTIME

1. Rangers G Henrik Lundqvist has lost five straight starts to remain two wins shy of 20 for the season.

2. Ottawa signed G Joey Daccord to a two-year contract and could give him a start in one of the final games.

3. Rangers rookie C Brett Howden has one goal and four assists during a four-game point streak.

St. Louis Blues vs. Chicago Blackhawks Preview and Predictions 04-03-2019 in NHL

The St. Louis Blues have flipped the script since the calendar changed to 2019, collecting points in 32 of their last 42 games (28-10-4) to join Winnipeg and Nashville in their pursuit of the Central Division title. The Blues trail the Jets and Predators by two points heading into Wednesday's game against the Chicago Blackhawks at United Center.

Jordan Binnington has been an integral part of St. Louis' surge toward its seventh playoff berth in eight seasons, earning NHL Rookie of the Month honors for both February and March while raising his win total to 22 in 2019. The 25-year-old turned aside 24 shots in a 3-2 shootout victory over Colorado on Monday, improving the Blues to 7-1-1 in their last nine games. Chicago has been headed in the other direction with losses in six of its last eight contests (2-3-3), although Dylan Strome is keeping positive after his first career multi-goal performance in Monday's 4-3 overtime loss to Winnipeg. "We're working hard every day. ... There hasn't been a game where we've felt terribly about ourselves and we're right in every game," said the 22-year-old Strome, who had just one assist for his lone point in his previous seven contests.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network, TVAS

ABOUT THE BLUES (43-28-8): Vladimir Tarasenko scored his third goal in five games on Monday to boost his team-leading total to 31, with four spread over a pair of two-goal performances against Chicago in October. Brayden Schenn also tallied twice in a 4-3 overtime loss at Chicago on Oct. 13 and had two assists in St. Louis' 7-3 romp over the Blackhawks two weeks later. Ryan O'Reilly secured a pair of three-point efforts versus Chicago in that month for the Blues, who were unable to benefit from those explosive performances en route to losing three of the four meetings this season between the teams.

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (34-33-12): Captain Jonathan Toews scored and set up a goal for the second time in three outings on Monday to push his career-high point total to 78. The 30-year-old matched his personal-best total in goals with 34, with three coming right out of the gate as he completed a hat trick by scoring 2:20 into overtime of Chicago's 5-4 win over St. Louis on Oct. 6. Alex DeBrincat set up a pair of goals in that contest and tallied twice one week later in a 5-4 overtime victory versus the Blues.

OVERTIME

1. Chicago RW Patrick Kane has recorded seven (four goals, three assists) of his 105 points versus St. Louis this season.

2. Binnington beat out C Robert Thomas for NHL Rookie of the Month honors for March, with the latter collecting 12 points (four goals, eight assists) in 15 games.

3. Blackhawks G Corey Crawford has yielded 11 goals in his last three contests after surrendering 13 in his previous nine appearances.

Calgary Flames vs. Anaheim Ducks Preview and Predictions 04-03-2019 in NHL

The balance of power has shifted in the Pacific Division and there is no better example than the matchup between the visiting Calgary Flames and Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday night. The Flames, who already have clinched the division title and the top seed in the Western Conference, will go for their fourth consecutive win when they face the Ducks.

Calgary rolled to a 6-1 rout of Anaheim to kick off the current winning streak and opened its three-game California road trip with a 5-3 win at San Jose that clinched the best record in the West. "This is the time of year where you really ramp it up for playoffs, so for us we want to be playing our best hockey going into the playoffs," forward Mark Jankowski said. The Ducks had won five consecutive Pacific titles before finishing second last season and owned a 25-game home winning streak over the Flames from 2004-17, but they have muddled through a dismal season and own the second-worst record in the conference. Anaheim's struggling offense showed some life in a 2-1-1 road trip, scoring five goals in each of the two victories.

TV: 10:30 ET, Sportsnet West (Calgary) FS West (Anaheim)

ABOUT THE FLAMES (50-23-7): Calgary rested six regulars but did not miss a beat in steamrolling Los Angeles 7-2 on Monday night to reach 50 wins for the second time in franchise history. Derek Ryan scored twice and James Neal, in his sixth game since sitting out more than a month, scored one goal and set up another to extend his point streak to three games. "This is the best time of the year," Neal said. "The team has been unbelievable all year. Proud of the way our guys have played. We're going to have a great playoff run, so I'm excited for that."

ABOUT THE DUCKS (33-37-10): Rickard Rakell has been among the major offensive disappointments for Anaheim, but he is closing the season on a high note with seven goals in five games after registering a natural hat trick in Saturday's 5-1 rout of Edmonton. "It's not just the goal scoring," linemate Jakob Silfverberg of Rakell. "He's more involved all over the ice. He has the puck a lot, and that's when he's at his best. He's been getting some bounces and putting some nice ones in." Rakell needs two more goals to reach 20 for the fourth straight season.

OVERTIME

1. Flames forward Johnny Gaudreau has points in four straight games and needs three more to reach 100 for the first time.

2. Ducks rookie F Troy Terry could miss three months with broken leg sustained when blocking a shot in Calgary.

3. Flames F Sam Bennett was knocked out of Monday's game but coach Bill Peters said he will play in one of the last two games.

PREDICTION: Flames 4, Ducks 3

South Florida Bulls vs. DePaul Blue Demons Preview and Predictions 04-03-2019 in NCAAB

David Collins hit the game-winner in the closing seconds as South Florida won the first game of the College Basketball Invitational best-of-three championship 63-61 over DePaul on Monday. The Bulls look to sweep the CBI when they travel to Chicago on Wednesday to play a Blue Demons team that needs to win the next two games on their home floor to take home the tournament title.

USF seemed to have Game 1 under control leading by 11 points with 10 minutes, 21 seconds to play after back-to-back 3-pointers by Collins, but DePaul battled back and tied the contest on a 3-pointer by Eli Cain with 12 seconds left. Collins then converted a runner down the lane with 1.6 seconds left to give him 23 points for the game and the Bulls their record-setting 23rd win of the season. "We had designed a play (after a timeout), but they kind of denied the in-bound, so I had to catch it (behind) half-court," Collins explained afterward. "Basically, after that point, I knew the screen was coming up and I just tried to come off the screen. He kind of went left. I feel like I crossed over and then the big man was right there, so I just kind of picked the ball up and split it, and I just shot a floater. It just went in." Perhaps a bigger story than the shot was the USF defense which held DePaul to 38.5 percent shooting from the field and 15 3-point attempts, forcing the Blue Demons' lowest scoring output of the season - 17 below their average.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPNU

ABOUT USF (23-13): Collins (15.9 points, 3.0 assists) connected on 4-of-7 from long range, raising his shooting percentage from deep to 31.9 on the season, and the 6-3 sophomore moved into 10th place on USF's all-time season scoring list with 556 points. Junior guard Laquincy Rideau (12.8 points, 5.3 assists, 3.7 rebounds) scored nine of his 15 points after halftime, and the school's season steals leader moved within six thefts of triple digits for the season. Sophomore forward Alexis Yetna (12.0 points, 9.6 rebounds) had 10 points and eight rebounds to move into second on USF's season rebounds list with 327.

ABOUT DEPAUL (18-16): Senior guard Cain (13.4 points, 3.4 assists) led the way with 19 points and three assists while leading scorer Max Strus tallied 17 points on just 8-of-19 shooting, including 1-of-6 from the arc despite hitting at a 36.9 percent clip on 287 attempts this season. The 6-6 senior, who needs 43 points to join Mark Aguirre as the only players in program history with 700 in a season, is the key for the Blue Demons, averaging 19.9 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 3.2 3-pointers - second most in the Big East. Senior forward Femi Olujobi (12.7 points, 5.4 rebounds), who is shooting 61 percent - second best in school history - shot 3-of-9 for 11 points as the Blue Deacons played without point guard Devon Gage (8.8 points, 4.0 assists) for a second straight game (concussion).

TIP-INS

1. If DePaul wins, Game 3 will be played Friday.

2. Both games are being played at McGrath-Phillips Arena on the DePaul campus rather than Wintrust Arena in downtown Chicago.

3. DePaul holds a 15-13 edge in the series, but USF has won nine straight. The teams have not met since 2013.

PREDICTION: DePaul 76, South Florida 68

Game of the Night: Rockets (-1, 229 ½) at Clippers – 10:35 PM EST

All eight playoff spots in the Western Conference have been spoken for, but seeding for these positions are still up in the air heading into the final week of the season. The Rockets (50-28 SU, 37-38-3 ATS) reached the 50-win mark for the third straight season following last night’s 130-105 blowout of the Kings to pull off the season sweep of Sacramento. James Harden led Houston with 36 points and 10 assists, while knocking down seven three-pointers to push the Rockets temporarily into the third seed in the Western Conference ahead of Portland.

The Clippers (47-31 SU, 45-32-1 ATS) are fighting for the fifth seed in the Western Conference, but sit one half-game behind the Jazz heading into Wednesday’s action. Los Angeles continues a four-game homestand after knocking off Cleveland and Memphis easily by double-digits apiece. The Clippers won both those games on a back-to-back set, capped off by Sunday’s 113-96 win over the Grizzlies as 10-point favorites. Danilo Gallinari paced the Clippers with 27 points and 15 rebounds, as Los Angeles connected on 34-of-38 free throws.

Since losing at Utah to close out February, the Clippers have won 13 of 15 games, including an 8-1 mark at Staples Center with the lone loss coming to Portland on March 12. The last time Houston visited Staples Center on February 21, the Rockets squandered a 19-point lead in a five-point loss to the Lakers. The Rockets have caught fire ever since by winning 17 of the past 20 games, but won’t be able to have home-court advantage against the Warriors potentially in the Western Conference Finals this season.

The Clippers have captured each of the first two matchups with the Rockets this season, although both wins came back in October. Los Angeles edged Houston, 115-112 at Staples on October 21 as Chris Paul was sidelined against his former team. The game finished OVER the total of 221 after the final three matchups between these teams went UNDER last season. The Clippers claimed the second meeting at Toyota Center five days later as 3 ½-point underdogs, 133-113, but Harden sat out for Houston as the Rockets will finally have their full compliment of players this time around.

Pacers at Pistons (-3 ½, 205 ½) – 7:05 PM EST

It’s Round Two between these Central division rivals as Indiana (46-32 SU, 39-39 ATS) rallied past Detroit (39-38 SU, 40-34-3 ATS) on Monday, 111-102 to snap a three-game losing streak. The Pacers overcame an early double-digit deficit, while seven players finished in double-figures, led by Bojan Bogdanovic and Thaddeus Young scored 19 points apiece.

The Pistons continue to play without leading scorer Blake Griffin, who is sidelined with knee tendinitis, as Detroit looks to secure a playoff spot by sitting in the sixth position. Detroit was dealt its fourth straight road loss on Monday, but the Pistons have been unbeatable at Little Caesar’s Arena of late by running off 11 consecutive home victories.

Indiana has lost in its past three visits to the Motor City since the start of the 2017-18 season, while the Pacers have dropped 10 straight games away from Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The last time Indiana won away from the Hoosier State came at Washington on February 23, while covering only twice during this 10-game road skid.

Raptors (-1 ½, 226) at Nets – 7:35 PM EST

Toronto (55-23 SU, 35-43 ATS) will likely settle for the second seed in the Eastern Conference as the Raptors are three games behind the Bucks with four games remaining. In the “If the playoffs started today” hypothetical, the Raptors would take on the Nets (39-39 SU, 42-36 ATS) in the 2/7 matchup. That wouldn’t disappoint Toronto at all, as the Raptors have captured nine of the past 10 meetings with their division rivals, but the Nets have covered in two matchups this season as a heavy underdog.

The Raptors are coming off their fourth straight victory since consecutive home losses to the Thunder and Hornets as Toronto pulled away from Orlando on Monday, 121-109 as 6 ½-point favorites. Toronto outscored Orlando, 33-16 in the second quarter to overcome an early 11-point deficit as Danny Green drilled seven three-pointers and scored 29 points.

The Nets will have to work for a playoff spot over the final week of the season as Brooklyn still has to face Milwaukee and Indiana on the road, followed by hosting Miami next Wednesday. Brooklyn has dropped three of four games, including Monday’s 131-121 setback to Milwaukee to snap a four-game winning streak at Barclays Center.

Celtics (-1, 212 ½) at Heat – 7:35 PM EST

Boston (46-32 SU, 36-41-1 ATS) jumped out to a 22-4 lead over Miami on Monday, but needed every last point to hold off the Heat, 110-105 at TD Garden. Although the Celtics failed to cash as seven-point favorites, Boston remained tied with Indiana for the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference playoff race. The Celtics have slumped to a 2-9 ATS record the last 11 games, while posting an 0-7 ATS mark the past seven contests at home.

Now, Boston travels to Miami to face the Heat (38-39 SU, 42-34-1 ATS), as the Celtics were crushed in their last visit to American Airlines Arena in early January, 115-99. Miami has covered all three meetings with Boston this season and is 7-1 ATS in the past eight matchups since December 2016. The Heat have won six straight games after a loss with the streak starting in late February on the Dwyane Wade miracle three-pointer at the buzzer to stun the Warriors.

The Heat are currently on a 7-3 run at the AAA, but two of those losses have come to upper-tier Eastern Conference foes Milwaukee and Toronto. The Celtics have not been reliable as a short favorite by posting a 4-9 ATS record as chalk of 2 ½ points or less, but Boston has won six of its last nine games in the role of a road favorite.

Spurs at Nuggets (-5, 213) – 9:05 PM EST

There is a strong possibility that San Antonio and Denver can meet up in the opening round of the Western Conference playoffs. The Nuggets (51-26 SU, 39-38 ATS) are currently the second seed in the West and may have to settle for that position after losing a critical game at Golden State on Tuesday, 116-102 as 8 ½-point underdogs. Denver has lost three of four, while hoping not to fold down the stretch with Houston sitting 1 ½ games back of the second spot in the West.

The Spurs (45-33 SU, 41-35-2 ATS) travel to Denver with no rest following Tuesday’s 117-111 victory over Atlanta. San Antonio fell to 0-4 ATS the last four games, although the last three ATS defeats came when laying 10 points or more. This series has been owned by the home team since January 2017 as the Nuggets have won the last three matchups at Pepsi Center. After San Antonio beat Denver at home in late December by eight points, the past two meetings have been decided by a total of four points.

The Nuggets are riding an 8-1 run to the UNDER the last nine games at Pepsi Center, while Denver has not allowed more than 100 points in four straight home contests. However, the Spurs are 9-3 to the OVER with no rest this season, while putting together a 4-8 SU and 6-5-1 ATS mark on the second of a back-to-back set.

No weapons in the offensive lineup

Washington are 10-point favorites as they host the Bulls who are exceptionally short handed without four of their best players in Kris Dunn, Zach LaVine, Otto Porter Jr., Lauri Markkanen.

Chicago have struggled on the road winning only one of their most recent eight games, and one of six on the road versus Washington. The Under has been a profitable bet when these two teams meet up cashing in 18 of 23 at Capital One Arena. With the Bulls only eclipsing 105 points once over their last five tries, back their team total Under 108.

Slow starters

The Heat host the Celtics with Miami currently a 1-point home favorite. The Celtics have won 10 of the most recent 13 on the road versus Miami but have failed to cover the spread in five straight.

The Celtics and Heat have been two of the lower scoring first half teams in the Association with Boston averaging 52.8 on the road, and Miami 54.3 at home. Over their most recent 10, the average score at halftime has been 49-47 in favor of the Celtics. Look for another slow start, and low scoring first half. Back the first half game total Under 103.

Closing the season off strong

Both the Timberwolves and Mavericks have struggled securing rebounds, with both squads surrendering a large number of rebounds with Dallas averaging 10.3 offensive and 60.7 overall over their last three, and the Timberwolves 11.3 offensive and 58 over their most recent three.

This is a favorable spot for Karl-Anthony Towns who in both meetings this season has been efficient from the floor shooting 9-of-16 for 31 points, and 12-of-21 for 30 points with 11 boards. Look for similar numbers today versus a Mavericks team surrendering 22 points and 15.7 rebounds to opposing centers and bet Over his points, rebounds, assists total of 42.5.

Playing unselfishly

The Nuggets play on the tail end of a back-to-back after a very poor shooting effort last night against the Warriors shooting 37.5 percent from the field and 23 percent from beyond the arc versus. Today, they host a San Antonio team who have split their most recent six games, also play in the second game of a back-to-back.

Both the Nuggets and Spurs have been burned by the extra pass this season, and the Nuggets are coming off a game where they surrendered 36 assists to the Warriors. The Spurs’ DeMar DeRozan is averaging a career high in assists per game with 6.2. Look for him to find the open man and continue to help orchestrate the Spurs offense. Bet “DeRozan to get 6+ assists”.

Keeping their offenses rolling

Houston travel to Los Angeles to take on a Clippers team who have won five straight home games and 13 of 18 overall on their own court versus the Rockets.

Both teams rank in the top six in first half points per game with the Clippers averaging 59.5 at home, and the Rockets 57.8 on the road this season. In the most recent meeting between these two, offenses were clicking early on with the Clippers edging out the Rockets 70-61 entering halftime with a lead. Look for similar numbers today and back the first half game total Over 117.

1 Unit FREE PLAY on Brooklyn Nets +2.5
The Toronto Raptors really don’t have anything to play for right now. They are locked into the 2nd seed in the Eastern Conference. The Nets have everything to play for. They are trying to clinch a playoff berth in the East. They are only one game ahead of 9th place Orlando, so they could find themselves on the outside looking in if they don’t win down the stretch. Making matters more difficult is that they have the toughest remaining schedule in the NBA. This is a huge game for them. They have beaten the Raptors in their lone home meeting with them this season, and they only lost by 2 at Toronto as 10-point dogs the last time these teams met up. They clearly aren’t intimidated by the Raptors. Give the the Nets.

NBA | Jazz vs Suns
Play on: Jazz -10½ -105 at pinnacle

Jazz
Phoenix Suns guard Devin Booker took the prolific scoring down a notch on Monday but finally managed to guide his team into the win column with a 122-113 triumph over Cleveland that snapped a six-game slide. Booker and the Suns will get a stiffer test on Wednesday, when the playoff-bound Utah Jazz visit.
Booker scored at least 48 points in three consecutive games, starting with 59 in a 125-92 loss at Utah on March 25, but found more team success with 25 points and 13 assists in Monday's victory.
Utah won 10 of its last 11 games and held the Hornets to 40 percent from the floor on Monday, including 7-of-30 from 3-point range.
Utah will play its next three against non-playoff teams before hosting Denver and visiting the Los Angeles Clippers to finish out the regular season.
Utah is enjoying a six-game winning streak in the series and breezed to a 114-97 triumph at Phoenix on March 13.
Take the Jazz on the road in a rout.
