Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Tampa Bay Lightning Preview and Predictions 04-12-2019 in NHL

The Columbus Blue Jackets gained plenty of confidence from a shocking comeback victory to open the Eastern Conference first-round series and look to match that effort when they visit the Presidents' Trophy-winning Tampa Bay Lightning for Game 2 on Friday. The Blue Jackets trailed by three goals through 29 minutes, but scored twice on special teams in the third period for a 4-3 victory Wednesday as they try to win their first playoff series in franchise history.

"I think it just shows us that we can battle against them," Columbus defenseman David Savard told reporters after scoring the second goal Wednesday. "It's good for us and we just have to believe in our game plan and stay focused. We don't really need to think about the outcome. I think if we play like this we have a chance of winning and to be in every game." Tampa Bay opened the scoring in Game 1 with Alex Killorn's short-handed goal, but gave up the tying goal while on a four-minute power play in the third period and Seth Jones got the winner with the man advantage. Defenseman Ryan McDonagh said the Lightning took their foot off the gas pedal, captain Steven Stamkos called it a lesson and coach Jon Cooper told reporters his team's biggest problem was itself. "We played with a ton of emotion in the first period and the building was jumping," Cooper said. "We clearly had them on their heels and you build that lead which is what you want to do, and I think our mentality was we want to outscore them tonight instead of build the lead and shut them down."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, CNBC, TVA, Sportsnet360; FS Ohio (Columbus), FS Sun (Tampa Bay)

ABOUT THE BLUE JACKETS: Goalie Sergei Bobrovsky came into the series with an .891 career playoff save percentage and gave up two goals on the first four shots he faced Wednesday, but turned aside all 16 in the final two periods. "In Bob's behalf, it's pretty hard when the first shot is a breakaway goal," coach John Tortorella said. ". ... We don't have a chance if he doesn't play the way he played the last 40 (minutes)." Power forward Josh Anderson deflected a McDonagh pass, leading to captain Nick Foligno's breakaway goal that made it 3-1 in the second period Wednesday, and later wheeled through the slot to score the tying goal while short-handed.

ABOUT THE LIGHTNING: Tampa Bay owned the best power play (28.2 percent) and penalty kill (85.02) in the league through the regular season, but its special teams let them down Wednesday - especially in the third period. "We get that four-minute (power play) and a chance to bury them and we give up a shorty," Stamkos said. "We just have to learn from this. ... Guys should be mad, but it's not going to be easy this time of year. We've been in this position before. We just got to get the next one." Right wing Nikita Kucherov, who led the league with 128 points, was kept off the scoresheet in Game 1 and had two shots along with two giveaways.

OVERTIME

1. The Lightning are 4-7 in Game 1 of their last 11 playoff series and have come back to win eight of the past 10 Game 2s.

2. Columbus F Alexandre Texier, who played just two regular-season games, was a plus-1 in 13 minutes, 8 seconds of playing time Wednesday.

3. Tampa Bay D Anton Stralman (lower body) sat out Game 1 and Cooper told reporters the veteran is working through some things.

PREDICTION: Lightning 4, Blue Jackets 1

Pittsburgh Penguins vs. New York Islanders Preview and Predictions 04-12-2019 in NHL

Hosting a Game 1 of a postseason series for the first time in 31 years, the New York Islanders made the wait more than worthwhile for their fans with a pulsating overtime victory. New York has a chance to take a 2-0 edge in their Eastern Conference first-round playoff series when they host Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday night.

Although the teams split four meetings during the regular season, Wednesday's matchup was the first in four months and was settled when Josh Bailey scored 4 1/2 minutes into overtime after the Islanders failed to protect three one-goal leads. "I liked our composure on the bench," Islanders coach Barry Trotz said. "There were a lot of twists and turns to that game. ... And we stayed with it. I liked our group, they didn't flinch at all, which is good." Although the Penguins scored late in regulation to force an the extra session, they are determined not to play catch-up again after allowing the opening goal less than two minutes into the series opener. "It's their home ice and we knew they were going to come out strong," Pittsburgh forward Jake Guentzel said. "Not the way we wanted to start for sure. We have to start better next game and go from there."

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network, CBC, TVAS2, AT&T Sportsnet-Pittsburgh, MSG, MSG-Plus (New York)

ABOUT THE PENGUINS: Evgeni Malkin, playing in his third game since missing more than 2 1/2 weeks to injury, scored on the power play and set up defenseman Justin Schultz's game-tying tally with 1:29 left in regulation to give him three goals and 13 points in seven playoff matchups versus New York. Phil Kessel, who finished the regular season with nine points in his last seven games, matched Malkin with a goal and an assist to give him eight points in five meetings versus the Islanders this season. Crosby was held off the scoresheet after scoring twice and collecting three assists in four previous meetings.

ABOUT THE ISLANDERS: Bailey emerged as the hero by batting in a rebound of Mathew Barzal's shot in overtime, but he had to have a short memory and recover after hitting a post in the final seconds of regulation. "That was tough to shake. I was worried I was going to have to see that one in my nightmares for a little while," Bailey said. "A little bit of redemption -- just happy to get the win. Crucial game, there's still a long way to go. But good win for us." Although Trotz said he could use both goalies in the series, Robin Lehner got the call and made 41 saves in his first career postseason start.

OVERTIME

1. Islanders F Jordan Eberle's opening goal was his first in 14 career playoff games.

2. Malkin scored his 63rd playoff goal and needs one more to move into a tie with four others for 22nd place on the all-time list.

3. Ex-Penguins F Tom Kuhnhackl got a surprise start for New York in Game 1 and had a pair of goals disallowed.

PREDICTION: Penguins 3, Islanders 2

St. Louis Blues vs. Winnipeg Jets Preview and Predictions 04-12-2019 in NHL

There were plenty of questions on how rookie Jordan Binnington would handle the Stanley Cup playoffs, but the St. Louis Blues goaltender limited the Winnipeg Jets to one goal while helping his team steal Wednesday's opening game of the series on the road. The Blues enter Game 2 on Friday with a chance to come home up 2-0 in the first-round series thanks in part to Binnington, who made 24 saves and kept his team in it until St. Louis scored twice in the game's final 16 minutes.

"That buzzer couldn't have come sooner," Binnington told reporters after an eventful playoff debut, which began with him drawing an interference penalty on Jets leading goal-scorer Mark Schefiele in the game's opening minute and concluded with him stopping a Scheifele one-timer with 12.4 seconds to play. For the Jets, the opener continued a disturbing trend of blowing third-period leads as Winnipeg could not hold a 1-0 advantage in the final 20 minutes, allowing Tyler Bozak's game-winning goal with just 2:05 to play. The Jets lost nine games in the regular season that they led after two periods and, after Patrik Laine's first-period goal, Winnipeg's high-powered offense was shut down by Binnington. "They made one more play than we did," Jets captain Blake Wheeler told the media afterward. "They sprung a couple. We'd like to clean that up."

TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, CNBC, Sportsnet, TVA, FS Midwest (St. Louis)

ABOUT THE BLUES: David Perron netted St. Louis' first goal 4:05 into the third period and Bozak finished with a team-high six shots on goal as the Blues got great work outside their high-scoring top line of Vladimir Tarasenko, Ryan O'Reilly and Brayden Schenn (no points on five shots). Binnington made two saves and St. Louis blocked three shots in the final two minutes. St. Louis played better as Game 1 unfolded, putting 10 shots on goal in the final period after combining for just 16 shots in the opening two periods.

ABOUT THE JETS: Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck made 24 saves but could not hold off the Blues in the final period, losing his fifth consecutive playoff start (dating back to four straight losses against Vegas last season). Laine scored his first goal in seven games and just his second in his past 20 contests, but the Jets finished with only 25 shots - seven coming in the final period. Bryan Little and Dustin Byfuglien assisted on the Laine goal, while Nikolaj Ehlers led Winnipeg with four shots on goal.

OVERTIME

1. Jets D Josh Morrissey returned from an upper-body injury, playing 17:15 in his first game since Feb. 24.

2. St. Louis Ds Colton Parayko and Alex Pietrangelo combined for two assists, five shots on goal and three blocked shots in Game 1.

3. O'Reilly won four faceoffs in the defensive zone in the final two minutes Wednesday.

PREDICTION: Jets 3, Blues 2

Vegas Golden Knights vs. San Jose Sharks Preview and Predictions 04-12-2019 in NHLThe San Jose Sharks doubled down on their offensive-minded defensemen by signing two-time Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson in the offseason, and the club was rewarded with two-point performances from three of its blue-liners in its playoff opener. The Sharks bid to continue their home dominance on Friday when they host the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 2 of their Western Conference first-round series.

Former Norris Trophy recipient Brent Burns scored his franchise-best 16th playoff goal by a defenseman and added an assist in Wednesday's 5-2 victory over Vegas to boost his postseason total to 45 points, which is three shy of Dan Boyle for the most in club history at the position. The 34-year-old Burns accepted both a feed and subsequent box-out from Karlsson before scoring a 3-on-3 goal after wiring a shot past Marc-Andre Fleury in the second period. Fleury, who had two shutouts en route to bouncing the Sharks in six games during last year's second-round series, allowed four goals on 32 shots while seeing five San Jose players register multi-point performances in the opener. "Definitely not the way we want to start a series," the three-time Stanley Cup-winning goaltender said. "I think we expected it was going to be intense and physical."

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network, Sportsnet 360, TVAS2, AT&T SportsNet-Rocky Mountains, NBCS California (San Jose)

ABOUT THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS: Mark Stone scored twice in the opener for Vegas, but the coveted trade deadline acquisition felt that the onus belongs on the Golden Knights to play better after mustering just 10 shots through two periods. "I don't think it has anything to do with them (the Sharks)," the 26-year-old Stone said. "It's more to do with us. We've got to focus on our own game." Linemate Max Pacioretty notched two assists to lift his postseason total to 21 points (10 goals, 11 assists) in 39 career games.

ABOUT THE SHARKS: Captain Joe Pavelski said his first-period goal was the toughest one of his career, an admission that came after he lost a few teeth on Wednesday and before he sat in a dentist's chair on Thursday after Burns' shot hit him flush in the mouth before the puck crossed the goal line. Coach Peter DeBoer labeled the 34-year-old said as "a warrior" after the contest and told NBC Sports California that he "thinks he's going to be fine." Pavelski, whose team-leading 38 goals this season were his second-most in his career, had just one of his 45 playoff tallies in last year's second-round series loss to Vegas.

OVERTIME

1. San Jose D Marc-Edouard Vlasic recorded his fifth career multi-point performance in the postseason with a goal and an assist in Game 1 while Karlsson set up a pair of tallies for his eighth multi-assist effort in the playoffs.

2. Vegas C Paul Stastny collected his sixth point in five games with an assist on Stone's second-period goal on Wednesday.

3. The Sharks are 13-7 all-time when taking a 1-0 lead in a playoff series while the Golden Knights rebounded from their lone Game 1 loss to defeat Winnipeg in last year's Western Conference final.

PREDICTION: Golden Knights 3, Sharks 2

Los Angeles Angels vs. Chicago Cubs Preview and Predictions 04-12-2019 in MLB

The Los Angeles Angels will try to continue their romp through the National League Central when they open a three-game interleague series against the host Chicago Cubs on Friday afternoon. The Angels have won six straight and are coming off a three-game sweep of Milwaukee at home.

The Cubs look to build off their first series victory of the season after closing out a three-game set against visiting Pittsburgh on Thursday with a 2-0 triumph. Chicago waited out a rain delay to win the rubber match of the series behind a dominant performance by Jose Quintana, who worked seven innings to preserve a taxed bullpen. The Angels ran their winning streak to six games with a 4-2 win over the Brewers on Wednesday despite playing without star center fielder Mike Trout, who sat out due to a right groin strain. After an off-day on Thursday, Trout - who is batting .406 with five home runs and 12 RBIs - hopes to be back in the lineup for the series opener in Chicago.

TV: 2:20 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FS West (Los Angeles), NBCS Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels LH Tyler Skaggs (1-1, 2.45 ERA) vs. Cubs LH Cole Hamels (1-0, 5.73)

After failing to get through five innings in his season debut at Oakland, Skaggs was strong last time out against Texas. The 27-year-old limited the Rangers to one run and five hits over 6 1/3 innings, striking out five and walking one. Skaggs faced the Cubs in 2013 but will pitch at Wrigley Field for the first time in his career.

Hamels had a tough time in his first outing of the season at Texas but bounced back with a quality start at Milwaukee on Saturday. The 35-year-old held the Brewers' potent offense to two runs and six hits while registering five strikeouts over six innings en route to his first win of 2019. Hamels is 4-2 with a 2.80 ERA in 11 career starts against the Angels.

WALK-OFFS

1. After a 4-for-24 start, Angels SS Andrelton Simmons is 7-for-23 with two doubles and a homer during a five-game hitting streak.

2. Cubs C Victor Caratini, who went 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI, left Thursday's game with a left hand injury - which the club fears is a fractured hamate bone.

3. The Angels' bullpen has posted a collective 1.67 ERA, the best in the majors.

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Washington Nationals Preview and Predictions 04-12-2019 in MLB

Patrick Corbin makes his third attempt at recording his first win with his new team when the Washington Nationals host the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday for the opener of their three-game series. Corbin, who landed a six-year, $140 million contract as a free agent in the offseason, did not factor in the decision in either of his first two starts this year.

Washington has scored 37 runs in its last three victories and has won six of its last nine games. Anthony Rendon is off to a torrid start, batting .429 with four home runs, seven doubles and 14 RBIs. Pittsburgh was blanked twice as it dropped two of three to the Chicago Cubs to open its eight-game road trip. Adam Frazier registered two hits in Thursday's 2-0 loss to the Cubs and is batting .310 in 42 at-bats.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, MASN2 (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates RH Trevor Williams (1-0, 2.25 ERA) vs. Nationals LH Patrick Corbin (0-0, 3.75)

Williams came away with a no-decision in his last outing as he gave up four runs - three earned - and seven hits over six innings versus Cincinnati. The 27-year-old fared better against the Reds in his season debut, scattering three hits over six scoreless innings while picking up the win. Williams is 1-1 with a 3.18 ERA in three career appearances (two starts) versus Washington.

Corbin allowed three runs - all on solo homers - and six hits in six innings against the New York Mets in his last start. The 29-year-old struck out nine and walked one in his second straight turn versus the Mets - he gave up two runs and seven hits over six frames in his club debut. Corbin is 1-2 with a 4.75 ERA in six career starts against the Pirates and he been touched for two homers by Melky Cabrera (2-for-7).

WALK-OFFS

1. Pirates RHP Jameson Taillon, who was hit in the head by a liner on Monday, is slated to start Sunday against the Nationals.

2. Washington CF Victor Robles is 6-for-16 with one homer, four RBIs and six runs scored over his last four games.

3. Pittsburgh placed Kevin Newman (hand) on the 10-day injured list and recalled fellow INF Kevin Kramer from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Chicago White Sox vs. New York Yankees Preview and Predictions 04-12-2019 in MLB

The New York Yankees' positive feelings after a series sweep in which they scored 29 runs were diminished after they surrendered 18 to find themselves swept away in their last set. The Yankees look to get back on track Friday when they begin a nine-game homestand with the opener of a three-game set versus the struggling Chicago White Sox.

"We got to tighten up a little bit, play a little bit better, but I believe we are really close to turning the corner ... this is a little bump in the road," New York manager Aaron Boone said following Wednesday's 8-6 loss to Houston. Luke Voit went deep for the second straight contest and extended his hitting streak to six games with a two-run homer in the eighth inning against the Astros. Chicago, which has limped out to its worst start to a season since 1997, has been outscored 45-14 during its five-game losing skid to send its team ERA skyrocketing to a league-worst 6.94. Tim Anderson had a pair of singles in Wednesday's 9-1 setback versus Tampa Bay to improve to 15-for-25 with two homers, five RBIs and seven runs scored during his six-game hitting streak.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, WGN (Chicago), WPIX (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox RH Lucas Giolito (1-1, 5.73 ERA) vs. Yankees LH J.A. Happ (0-1. 6.48)

Giolito took a no-hitter into the seventh inning in his first start but failed to get out of the fifth in the other, allowing five runs on six hits with four walks in a 9-2 setback versus Seattle. The 24-year-old, who will be making his first appearance at Yankee Stadium, was shelled for seven runs on six hits -- including Giancarlo Stanton's grand slam -- in five innings of a 7-3 setback against New York on Aug. 8. Aaron Hicks (back) joined Stanton (biceps) by going deep in that game, although both won't be a factor on Friday against Giolito, who has limited the Yankees' current crop of batters to a 4-for-19 performance at the plate with seven strikeouts.

Happ has yet to work out of the fifth inning in a pair of starts this season and has been taken deep three times, including once in a no-decision at Baltimore on Saturday. "It's kind of the game now," the 36-year-old said of the bullpen trend. "... I definitely think later on, I'll be out there to finish that inning." Happ owns a 4-2 mark with a 3.86 ERA in six career starts versus Chicago, with Anderson batting 6-for-10 with a solo homer against him.

WALK-OFFS

1. Chicago CF Leury Garcia has 10 hits and six runs scored in his last six games while LF Eloy Jimenez has 10 hits in his last seven.

2. New York LH CC Sabathia will come off the injured list to make his first start of the season on Saturday, Boone announced.

3. White Sox 1B Jose Abreu is 0-for-13 with four strikeouts in his last three games.

Tampa Bay Rays vs. Toronto Blue Jays Preview and Predictions 04-12-2019 in MLB

The Tampa Bay Rays have won their first four series of the season for the first time in franchise history and hope to get off to a strong start in No. 5 when they visit the slumping Toronto Blue Jays on Friday. Austin Meadows led a Tampa Bay offense that posted 24 runs during a three-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox to start the week, going 7-for-10 with a pair of homers and seven RBIs in his last two contests.

"He's got the ability to do everything well," Rays manager Kevin Cash told reporters of Meadows, who has recorded four homers and 13 RBIs overall. "He's got a chance to be a pretty special player with this opportunity that he's earned to get going here in the lineup and be a big part of our group." Ryne Stanek will pitch an inning or two to open the game for Tampa Bay on Friday while Toronto counters with rookie Trent Thornton, who is looking for his first major-league win after two strong performances this season. The Blue Jays started the year with two wins in three games but are just 2-8 since after coughing up a five-run lead and then surrendering a pair in the bottom of the ninth inning to drop a 7-6 decision at Boston on Thursday. Freddy Galvis has been a bright spot for Toronto during its slide, going 11-for-22 with three homers and six RBIs while hitting safely in six consecutive contests to raise his batting average to .395.

TV: 7:07 p.m. ET, FS Sun (Tampa Bay), Sportsnet One (Toronto)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays RH Ryne Stanek (0-0, 1.50 ERA) vs. Blue Jays RH Trent Thornton (0-0, 1.69)

Stanek opens the game for the third time this season after allowing one hit and registering five strikeouts over three scoreless innings in the first two. The 27-year-old native of Kansas had not given up a run in six frames this season before surrendering one on two hits and a walk without retiring a batter Tuesday in Chicago. Rowdy Tellez is 1-for-2 with a homer versus Stanek, who permitted two runs and six hits over 10 innings (six starts) against Toronto last year.

Thornton has given his team a chance to win in his first two major-league starts, tossing five scoreless innings against Detroit before limiting Cleveland to two runs over 5 2/3 frames last Friday. The 25-year-old from North Carolina, who is a former fifth-round draft pick of Houston, has struck out 15 batters and walked just two to start his career. Thornton posted a 9-8 record and 4.42 ERA with Triple-A Fresno last season before being acquired from the Astros in a trade for Aledmys Diaz.

WALK-OFFS

1. Toronto 1B-DH Justin Smoak, who belted a three-run homer on Thursday, recorded six shots and 14 RBIs in 19 games against Boston last year.

2. Tampa Bay LF Tommy Pham hit his first two homers of the season in Wednesday's 9-1 win and has reached base in 45 straight contests.

3. The Rays won 13 of 19 meetings last year - going 6-4 at Toronto - after losing the season series 10-9 in 2017.

Philadelphia Phillies vs. Miami Marlins Preview and Predictions 04-12-2019 in MLB

The Philadelphia Phillies made several offseason acquisitions prior to the signing of superstar Bryce Harper, with All-Star J.T. Realmuto reeled in from the Miami Marlins for fellow catcher Jorge Alfaro, a pair of pitchers and international bonus slot money. Realmuto returns to South Florida for the first time since the trade as the Phillies open a three-game series against the Marlins on Friday.

Realmuto had been slow out of the blocks with just four hits in his first seven contests before collecting five in a three-game span prior to Wednesday's 15-1 drubbing by Washington. Rhys Hoskins cooled down in back-to-back losses against the Nationals after a sterling five-game stretch in which he went 9-for-19 with four homers, 10 RBIs and five runs scored. While Philadelphia has surrendered 25 runs in its last two contests, Miami has mustered a majors-worst 34 and has been shut out three times in the last six outings following Thursday afternoon's 5-0 setback in Cincinnati. Brian Anderson collected two of the five hits recorded by the Marlins, who have lost eight of their last nine heading into the opener of their nine-game homestand.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, NBC 10 (Philadelphia), FS Florida (Miami)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Jake Arrieta (1-1, 2.77 ERA) vs. Marlins RH Sandy Alcantara (1-0, 1.50)

Arrieta answered a sterling start with another strong outing, but one bad inning in which he uncorked a run-scoring wild pitch and surrendered a pair of solo homers led to his undoing in a 6-2 setback versus Minnesota. The 2015 National League Cy Young Award recipient improved to 5-1 with a 3.00 ERA in eight career starts against the Marlins after posting a 2-1 record in four meetings last season. Starlin Castro (4-for-10, three doubles) and Curtis Granderson (10-for-32, three homers, 10 RBIs) have flustered Arrieta, although the 33-year-old hurler has kept Lewis Brinson and J.T. Riddle hitless in six at-bats apiece.

Alcantara followed up a stellar season-opening start by struggling to find the strike zone in his next trip to the mound, allowing five walks in four innings of Saturday's no-decision at Atlanta. "You can't pitch away from contact," Marlins manager Don Mattingly said of the 23-year-old Dominican's performance. "You've got to use your stuff. I really have to say it was a side step. At least it wasn't backwards. Not a step forward, a side step." Alcantara has kept the current crop of Phillies in check in his career, limiting the club to going 1-for-14 with five strikeouts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Philadelphia SS Jean Segura leads the team with 14 hits, although he is just 3-for-15 with three strikeouts in his last four games.

2. Alfaro is 4-for-10 with two blasts while driving in three runs in his last three contests to boost his team-leading totals in homers (three) and RBIs (six).

3. Phillies 3B Maikel Franco is 4-for-26 in his last seven games.

PREDICTION: Phillies 5, Marlins 4

Baltimore Orioles vs. Boston Red Sox Preview and Predictions 04-12-2019 in MLB

The Boston Red Sox created a spark with a comeback victory last time out and hope to ignite their first winning streak of the season when they host the struggling Baltimore Orioles on Friday for the opener of their four-game series. The Red Sox trailed by five runs early against Toronto on Thursday and entered the ninth inning down by one before rallying for a 7-6 victory to avoid losing their fourth straight series.

Rafael Devers singled home the winning run and has collected four hits in his last two games to give Boston three regulars batting at least .270 as he joined J.D. Martinez (hits in 12 of 13 games) and Mitch Moreland, who has homered in four straight contests in which he had an official at-bat. Eduardo Rodriguez will try to begin changing the trend after two rough outings when he takes the mound for the Red Sox in the series opener as the Orioles counter with David Hess, who has producd one good start and one poor one thus far in 2019. Baltimore has lost seven of its last eight games after a 4-1 start, giving up 31 runs while dropping the past three, and slugger Chris Davis has gone 0-for-32 this season to extend his major-league record to 53 at-bats without a hit. "It is what it is," Davis told the Baltimore Sun. "The more I try to go out there and do, or the more I try to shoulder this all by myself, the harder it gets. I have to trust the process, I have to trust the work I'm putting in. At some point, it's going to turn around."

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, MASN (Baltimore), NESN (Boston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH David Hess (1-1, 2.70 ERA) vs. Red Sox LH Eduardo Rodriguez (0-2, 12.38)

Hess suffered the loss against the New York Yankees on Sunday, when he allowed four runs and five hits - three homers - in five innings after producing two solid outings to open the season. The 25-year-old Tennessean limited his first two opponents to one hit with 10 strikeouts over 8 1/3 scoreless frames. Martinez is 2-for-2 with a pair of homers and two walks versus Hess, who went 0-2 with an 11.25 ERA in two turns against Boston last year.

Rodriguez has played a big role in Boston's early pitching struggles by permitting 12 runs - 11 earned - over eight innings in his first two starts of 2019. The 26-year-old Venezuelan has struck out seven and walked six in the early going after registering 146 strikeouts and issuing just 45 free passes last year. Joey Rickard is 5-for-15 with a homer against Rodriguez, who went 3-0 with a 1.31 ERA in five games (three starts) versus Baltimore in 2018.

WALK-OFFS

1. Orioles 1B-OF-DH Trey Mancini has launched six homers in his last 11 games and leads the team with 12 RBIs.

2. Boston 2B Dustin Pedroia, who was limited to three games last season due to injuries, has notched hits in his first two contests of 2019.

3. Baltimore INF Jonathan Villar has hit safely in 11 of his first 13 games and driven in eight runs.

New York Mets vs. Atlanta Braves Preview and Predictions 04-12-2019 in MLB

The Atlanta Braves enter Friday's home contest against the New York Mets after a 6-3 loss in Thursday's series opener, just their second defeat in the past nine games, but the day also produced a long-term win for the franchise. Nine days after locking up star outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. to an eight-year contract extension, Atlanta inked second baseman Ozzie Albies to a seven-year deal, keeping the All-Star with the Braves through at least 2026.

Albies finished 0-for-5 in the series opener but is off to a solid start in his second full big-league season, hitting .327 with an .838 OPS and manning the leadoff spot against left-handed starters. But it was an opposing infielder who stood out Thursday, as New York shortstop Amed Rosario drove in a career-high four runs - belting a three-run homer in the second and adding an RBI single in the sixth. Rosario, who hit .302 in his final 48 games a season ago, is 6-for-15 in his past four games and is hitting .283 on the season with four extra-base hits and 10 RBIs in 46 at-bats. Rookie first baseman Pete Alonso, who came into Thursday tied for second in the National League in RBIs and tied for third in homers, slugged his sixth longball of the season in the seventh and finished with two RBIs - giving him 17 in 12 games.

TV: 7:20 p.m. ET, MLB Network, SNY (New York), FS South (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Zack Wheeler (0-1, 10.24 ERA) vs. Braves RH Kyle Wright (0-1, 4.35)

Wheeler faced Washington in his first two starts and struggled in both, giving up four runs on six hits in five innings on March 31 before walking seven hitters while allowing seven runs over 4 2/3 innings Sunday. The 28-year-old has walked eight hitters over 9 2/3 innings so far, after issuing only 55 walks in 182 1/3 innings en route to a 12-7 record and 3.31 ERA a season ago. Wheeler went 1-1 with a 4.26 ERA and 1.26 WHIP against the Braves in 2018, and in 10 career starts is 5-3 with a 3.21 ERA.

Wright struggled in cold conditions in his first start of the season in Philadelphia, but pitched much better last Saturday at home against Miami, giving up two runs on five hits with four strikeouts and one walk over six innings. The 23-year-old had walked five while allowing three runs in his season debut, but threw 46 of his 77 pitches for strikes Saturday while allowing a pair of solo homers. Wright surrendered two runs in one inning of relief against the Mets as a rookie last season.

WALK-OFFS

1. New York 2B Robinson Cano finished 0-for-5 in the series opener, and is 3-for-21 with five strikeouts in his past six games to drop his average to .180.

2. Acuna slammed a 462-foot homer in the eighth Thursday, finishing a double shy of the cycle, and is 7-for-11 with five runs scored and five RBIs in his last three games.

3. New York RHP Edwin Diaz struck out two in a scoreless ninth, earning his fifth save in five chances.

Oakland Athletics vs. Texas Rangers Preview and Predictions 04-12-2019 in MLB

After averting a fifth consecutive loss to close out their first road trip of the season, the Texas Rangers enjoyed a day off before opening a nine-game homestand against the resurgent Oakland Athletics on Friday night. Oakland had dropped the first four contests of its 10-game road trip before breezing to three consecutive victories in Baltimore.

Athletics first baseman Khris Davis had the most homers in baseball with 48 a year ago and has not missed a beat, belting two for the second straight day to boost his major league-leading total to nine. "We've seen him go on some runs similar to these. A lot of times, they end up being big home runs, too," manager Bob Melvin said after his club swatted 12 homers and amassed 31 runs on 38 hits in the final three games against the Orioles. The Rangers halted a four-game slide with a 5-2 victory at Arizona on Wednesday but the good vibes were dimmed when closer Jose Leclerc had to be yanked after a second straight rocky outing. "There's always a level of concern," manager Chris Woodward said. "He legitimately is the best pitcher on our staff. We have to get him right mentally and physically."

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, NBCS California (Oakland), FS Southwest (Texas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Athletics RH Mike Fiers (2-1, 5.94 ERA) vs. Rangers LH Drew Smyly (0-1, 7.11)

Fiers will be making his fifth start of the season and will attempt to bounce back from a shellacking in Houston last time out when he was tagged for six runs and seven hits in only 1 2/3 innings. The 33-year-old did not allow a run in winning each of his previous two outings, tossing six scoreless innings against both Boston and the Los Angeles Angels. Elvis Andrus is 7-for-23 with two homers against Fiers, who owns a 3-3 record and 6.16 ERA in nine appearances (eight starts) versus Texas.

Texas has scored one run in each of Smyly's first two starts but he has not helped his cause by failing to get through the fourth inning. The 29-year-old, who made a career-high 30 starts last year, lasted three innings and allowed one run on four hits in his season debut versus Houston before getting roughed up for four runs on six hits over 3 1/3 frames in a loss at the Angels last time out. Smyly, who has not faced Oakland since July 2016, has limited Marcus Semien to one hit in seven at-bats.

WALK-OFFS

1. Oakland C Josh Phegley has three homers and seven RBIs in his last four games while hitting safely in six in a row.

2. Leclerc had a streak of 25 straight scoreless appearances before giving up four runs and four hits in his last two.

3. Athletics 2B Chad Pinder was 7-for-13 with six runs scored in his last three games while Semien has hit safely in five straight.

Cleveland Indians vs. Kansas City Royals Preview and Predictions 04-12-2019 in MLB

The Cleveland Indians haven't exactly set a torrid pace offensively while waiting for players like Francisco Lindor and Jason Kipnis to return from injury, but the pitching staff has more than held up its end of the bargain. The Indians hope to continue rolling Friday when they begin the second leg of a nine-game road trip with the opener of a three-game series against the struggling Kansas City Royals.

Cleveland is averaging 3.6 runs, ranks among the bottom three American League teams in runs scored (43) and has tallied more than four runs only three times in 12 contests so far, yet the back-to-back-to-back AL Central champions have won six of seven in large part because they have yet to allow more than two runs in any of the victories over that stretch. Shane Bieber and two relievers turned in the latest dominant effort by the Indians in Thursday's 4-0 win in Detroit, holding the Tigers to three singles and a walk. The Royals continued along their worst 12-game start since 2006 following a 7-6, 10-inning loss to Seattle on Thursday, losing for the 10th straight time after giving up a game-tying two-run triple with two outs and two strikes in the ninth inning. "What's happening can't continue throughout the whole season. It just can't," second baseman Whit Merrifield told the Kansas City Star. "Those balls aren't going to fall all year for our opponents. It's just a matter of when's it going to turn, and hopefully it's (Friday)."

TV: 8:15 p.m. ET, STO (Cleveland), FS Kansas City

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Carlos Carrasco (1-1, 7.71 ERA) vs. Royals RH Brad Keller (1-1, 2.84)

Carrasco became the first Cleveland pitcher since at least 1908 to record 12 strikeouts through five innings in Saturday's win against Toronto, doing so while allowing two runs on six hits and a walk. The performance was a huge improvement from his March 31 season debut in Minnesota in which he surrendered six runs and 10 hits in 4 1/3 frames. Merrifield (7-for-17, one home run) has thrived while Alex Gordon (5-for-35, 16 strikeouts) has struggled against Carrasco, who went 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA in two starts versus the Royals last season.

Keller turned in his third consecutive quality start Sunday in Detroit, but a lack of run support led to his first loss of the season despite yielding three runs across six innings. The 23-year-old Georgia native has allowed three earned runs or fewer in 10 of his last 11 turns and is 8-3 with a 3.00 ERA in 15 starts since last year's All-Star Game. Keller is 6-1 with a 2.80 ERA in 22 career home appearances (12 starts) and finished 1-1 with a 1.65 ERA in four games (two starts) versus the Indians in 2018.

WALK-OFFS

1. Merrifield's 31-game hitting streak was snapped with a 0-for-6 effort Thursday, one day after he broke George Brett's team record.

2. Indians OF Leonys Martin's three hits in four at-bats Thursday to match the total he mustered in the team's first five road games combined (3-for-16), while his two RBIs doubled his previous season total.

3. Cleveland's 2.57 team ERA ranks second in the majors.

San Diego Padres vs. Arizona Diamondbacks Preview and Predictions 04-12-2019 in MLB

The San Diego Padres are in sole possession of first place in the National League West 10 games or later into a season for the first time since Sept. 25, 2010. San Diego looks to remain atop the division Friday, when it visits the Arizona Diamondbacks for the second contest of their four-game series.

Manuel Margot belted the tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning and Austin Hedges launched a 449-foot, three-run blast earlier in the game as San Diego notched a 7-6 triumph on Thursday for its sixth win in eight contests. Padres rookie Fernando Tatis Jr. recorded a pair of singles for his third two-hit performance, raising his batting average to .244, but also struck out for the 17th time in just 45 at-bats. Arizona recovered from a five-run deficit to forge a tie in the seventh inning on Eduardo Escobar's three-run homer before dropping to 3-3 on its nine-game homestand. David Peralta is swinging a hot bat for the Diamondbacks as he went 2-for-5 with two RBIs to raise his average to .367.

TV: 9:40 p.m. ET, FS San Diego, FS Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres RH Chris Paddack (0-0, 1.04 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks RH Luke Weaver (0-0, 6.75)

Paddack has registered 11 strikeouts and given up just three hits over 8 2/3 innings in his first two major-league starts. The 23-year-old struggled with his command in his last outing as he issued four walks and was removed after throwing 89 pitches in 3 2/3 frames while allowing an unearned run and one hit. Paddack gave up one run and two hits while striking out seven in five innings against San Francisco on March 31 in his major-league debut.

Weaver didn't factor in the decision against Boston in his last turn as he gave up three runs and five hits over five innings. The 25-year-old is 2-1 with a 2.08 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in three career starts versus the Padres and has struggled with Margot (4-for-8) and Eric Hosmer (3-for-6). Weaver was part of the package Arizona received when it traded slugger Paul Goldschmidt to St. Louis in the offseason.

WALK-OFFS

1. Two of Padres OF Franmil Reyes' five hits this season have been homers as he also went deep in Thursday's series opener.

2. A native of San Diego, Arizona RF Adam Jones is 6-for-17 against the Padres this season after going 1-for-3 with an RBI on Thursday.

3. San Diego 3B Manny Machado has registered only two multi-hit performances in his 14 games with the club.

Milwaukee Brewers vs. Los Angeles Dodgers Preview and Predictions 04-12-2019 in MLB

The Milwaukee Brewers visit the Los Angeles Dodgers for a three-game series starting Friday in their first meeting since Los Angeles won the 2018 National League Championship Series in seven games. The clubs have already shown signs this season that they could reconvene in October, although not of late as Milwaukee was swept in three games by the Angels in Anaheim while the Dodgers lost all four in St. Louis to start the week.

"It's still early," Brewers right-hander Brandon Woodruff told reporters. "We'll look back on these games, and you won't even think about them toward the end of the season when we're winning a lot of ballgames." Los Angeles was outscored 26-12 by the Cardinals with Thursday's 11-7 loss after sweeping three from Colorado at Coors Field by a combined 29-14 last weekend. The Dodgers (8-6) lead the National League with 96 runs and 29 homers - Milwaukee (8-5) has 23 - and Los Angeles on Friday faces a right-hander who has yielded three in each of his last two starts. Corbin Burnes became the first Brewers pitcher to allow at least three homers in consecutive games since Jason Bere in 2000 and opposes Julio Urias, who pitched 3 1/3 innings over four relief appearances in the 2018 NLCS - allowing only a solo home run to Jesus Aguilar in Game 1.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, FS Wisconsin (Milwaukee), SportsNet LA, KTLA (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Corbin Burnes (0-1, 9.90 ERA) vs. Dodgers LH Julio Urias (0-0, 3.12)

Burnes makes his first road start of 2019 after allowing 11 runs across 10 innings with 18 strikeouts and four walks over his first two turns. The 24-year-old Californian made four relief appearances - three scoreless - in the 2018 NLCS, striking out six in five innings before joining the rotation this season. "Corbin is a starter for us. We've made that commitment," Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell told reporters. "The first two starts are odd, with the home runs, but his stuff has played really well, too. ... I think there's a lot of ingredients there for success. It's our job to help him get there. ..."

Urias wasn't sharp in Sunday's 12-6 victory at Colorado, allowing three runs, four hits and four walks on 74 pitches over 3 2/3 innings, but delivered an RBI single that turned into two runs because of an error. "You go out there with the confidence of putting up zeros, zero after zero, and let the offense do their job,'' the 22-year-old Mexican told reporters about his club's prodigious plate production. Urias has appeared in 28 career games - 14 home and 14 away - with a 3.05 ERA in 59 innings at Dodger Stadium compared to 4.33 in 54 frames on the road.

WALK-OFFS

1. Brewers C Yasmani Grandal, who hit 89 home runs while playing the last four years with the Dodgers, is 12-for-24 with three homers, four RBIs and four walks in his last seven games.

2. Los Angeles SS Corey Seager (.255) went 2-for-2 before leaving Thursday's contest in the fourth inning after he was hit in the left hamstring by a pitch.

3. Milwaukee INF Travis Shaw (6-for-39 this season) left Wednesday's game after getting hit on the right hand with a pitch.

Houston Astros vs. Seattle Mariners Preview and Predictions 04-12-2019 in MLB

One season after a middling 176 home runs played a role in the club missing the postseason, the rebuilt Seattle Mariners are enjoying almost unprecedented success with the long ball and doing so with a consistency that has never been seen before. The Mariners also hope to continue the second-best start in the majors since 1987 on Friday when they host the Houston Astros in the opener of a three-game series.

Seattle became the first team ever to homer in each of its first 15 games during Thursday's 7-6, 10-inning triumph at Kansas City, breaking up a shutout bid in the sixth inning with Dee Gordon's first homer of the year and capping off a late rally with another solo shot from Daniel Vogelbach in the 10th. The Mariners have hit a majors-best 36 home runs on the season - more than 20 percent of last year's total - matching the 2000 St. Louis Cardinals for the most through 15 contests while also tying last year's Boston Red Sox for the second-best 15-game start (13-2), one game off the pace set by the 1987 Milwaukee Brewers. Houston opened the season in lackluster fashion by dropping five of seven on the road before completing a perfect six-game homestand with an 8-6 victory over the New York Yankees on Wednesday. Jose Altuve got it going offensively during the Astros' first-ever sweep of the Yankees, as four of his five hits during the series left the yard.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet Southwest (Houston), ROOT Northwest (Seattle)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros LH Wade Miley (1-1, 2.31 ERA) vs. Mariners LH Wade LeBlanc (2-0, 4.76)

Miley fell one out short of producing his second consecutive quality start but still got the victory Saturday against Oakland, permitting six baserunners across 5 2/3 scoreless innings. The 32-year-old hasn't struck out more than five batters in any of his last seven regular-season starts, yet he is 4-1 over that span thanks in part to a lack of walks (seven in 34 2/3 frames). Edwin Encarnacion (7-for-15, three homers) has had his way with Miley, who is 2-1 with a 2.89 ERA in three starts against Seattle.

LeBlanc continued to benefit from excellent run support Sunday in Chicago, although he rebounded from an uneven season debut to hold the White Sox to two runs while striking out six over as many innings. The Alabama product has watched his offense score 22 runs in his two outings, including 21 in support of him. Josh Reddick (6-for-13, home run) and Altuve (4-for-8) have enjoyed much success versus LeBlanc, who went 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA in six appearances (four starts) against Houston in 2018.

WALK-OFFS

1. Mariners OF Mitch Haniger has stepped up in the ninth inning of the last two games, delivering a game-winning solo blast Wednesday and a game-tying two-run triple with two outs and two strikes Thursday.

2. Altuve became only the 11th Astro - and first since Lance Berkman in 2010 - to hit four home runs in a three-game regular-season series with his effort versus the Yankees.

3. Vogelbach is batting .462 with six homers, four doubles and 11 RBIs in the past seven games.

Colorado Rockies vs. San Francisco Giants Preview and Predictions 04-12-2019 in MLB

Not even a strong performance from their starting pitcher last time out could change the fortunes of the Colorado Rockies. The club attempts to halt its six-game slide and record just its second win in 12 contests when it continues its four-game series against the host San Francisco Giants on Friday.

Jon Gray allowed just one run and five hits over 6 2/3 innings in the series opener on Thursday but came away with the loss as the Rockies managed to register only three singles in a 1-0 defeat. Garrett Hampson notched two of them after going 3-for-30 over his first 11 contests as Colorado fell for the 10th time in 11 games following a pair of victories to open the season. Kevin Pillar belted his third homer in four contests while Jeff Samardzija combined with two relievers on a three-hitter on Thursday as San Francisco posted just its third win in nine games. Joe Panik recorded two hits in the opener, matching the total from his previous six contests as the Giants improved to 3-4 on their 10-game homestand.

TV: 10:15 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet-Rocky Mountain (Colorado), NBCS Bay Area (San Francisco)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies RH Chad Bettis (0-2, 11.88 ERA) vs. Giants LH Drew Pomeranz (0-1, 4.00)

Bettis hopes to turn things around after being battered in each of his first two starts of the year. The 29-year-old Texan yielded six runs and seven hits over 5 2/3 innings in a loss at Tampa Bay in his season debut and was tagged for six runs on seven hits and four walks without recording a strikeout over 2 2/3 frames by the Los Angeles Dodgers in a setback on Sunday. Bettis owns a 3-4 record with his lone shutout and a 4.59 ERA in 15 career games (10 starts) versus San Francisco.

Pomeranz has allowed just two runs in each of his first two turns this season but has yet to record a victory. The 30-year-old Tennessean worked five innings on the road against the Dodgers in his 2019 debut but lasted only four versus the Rays on Sunday, when he yielded six hits and three walks en route to a loss. Pomeranz, who began his career with Colorado, has gone 2-0 while giving up two runs over 14 frames in two starts and two relief appearances against his former team.

WALK-OFFS

1. Rockies 1B Mark Reynolds and OF Ian Desmond have combined to go 10-for-63 with one homer and seven RBIs this season.

2. San Francisco C Buster Posey and SS Brandon Crawford (one) have driven in a total of one run this year.

3. Colorado (3-10) has matched the worst 13-game start in franchise history.

BRUTUS HUGHES - When examining today's class figure, he will have to notch a better speed rating than last time out to battle in this dirt sprint. STIHL HARBOR - In any race of 5 1/2 furlongs, I like to bet on a contender that has been sharp in short distance events recently. Somewhat easily forgotten rating last out at Delta Downs at 5 furlongs. Don't feel this pony will improve too much in today's event.

# 6 LA VITA DOLCE 12/1

# 7 LOOSE ON KATELLA 5/2

# 5 DREAMS DIVINE 8/5

LA VITA DOLCE seems to be the wager in here and is a solid value wager given the line. She is worth a look given that the handler wins 22 percent of his races with two-year olds, which is surely among the top in the race. Always hard to beat Gonzalez and Delatorre working together, winning 33 percent of their races. A nice ROI of +33 with this jockey and trainer duo. LOOSE ON KATELLA - Arrossa has been steady with two year olds, winning at a 21 percent rate.

# 10 MCERIN 5/2

# 2 MR FRENCH (GB) 10/1

# 3 FIG JELLY 8/1

MCERIN looks quite good to best this field. Is a solid choice - given the 114 speed figure from his most recent race. Should keep the impressive string of finishes intact this time out. MR FRENCH (GB) - With a very strong 107 speed fig last time out, will clearly be a factor in this race. Has been running admirably in races of this distance, going 5 out of 8 under similar conditions. FIG JELLY - It's a good signal that Servis is using Juarez on this horse. When Servis uses Juarez there's a good chance for sizeable profits.

#4 PEACEMAKER R V F (ML=4/1)

PEACEMAKER R V F - This filly is in nice condition, having run a nice race on March 30th, finishing first. I think this filly is ready to run a good one. She's had enough races since the layoff and should be fit.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 REGAL ANTICIPATION (ML=8/5), #3 DIRTY GIRL (ML=9/5), #2 TIGHTLY TWISTED (ML=7/2),

REGAL ANTICIPATION - Difficult to put any dough on this mare on the front end. Likes to land in the money though. A 'performance bounce' is likely to happen for this horse this time around. May rebound next time. DIRTY GIRL - This thoroughbred likes to hit the board, but doesn't usually win. Leave out of the top spot. Unlikely that the speed fig she garnered on March 16th will hold up in this event. TIGHTLY TWISTED - Hard to play any horse to turn things around if there is no reward to taking the chance. Pedestrian speed fig in the last race at Parx Racing at 1 mile. Don't think this entrant will improve too much in today's event.

952 Pittsburgh at Washington
Williams & Corbin
The Nationals own advantages across the board in all the key categories we value. The biggest being the starting pitcher edge with Patrick Corbin who rates 31% better than league average. Trevor Williams grades less than average if you just chart his commonly available numbers. He's not a major strikeout pitcher which is a big component of many models. He has success in getting poor contact and missing barrels. So if you are charting Williams you must always keep that in mind, or you will be fading Trevor every start. That said, we will look to fade him here as even with the knowledge of his soft contact, we still make the Nationals a much higher favorite.

Play on: Pirates +165 at betonline

10* FREE MLB PICK (Pirates +165)
I'll take my chances here with Pittsburgh in Friday's series opener against the Nationals. Most will be looking to take Washington at home, especially with them having just scored 25 runs in back-to-back wins at Philadelphia and the Pirates getting shutout in yesterday's series finale against the Cubs.
I just feel these things have Washington way over-priced and there's just too much value with Pittsburgh. Pirates are 5-2 in their last 7 and are simply a better team than they get credit for. Hard to not give them a decent shot here with Trevor Williams on the mound. Williams has a strong 2.25 ERA and 0.917 WHIP over his first two starts and owns a 2.53 ERA and 1.125 WHIP in two career starts against Washington (both coming last year).
Nationals will send out Pat Corbin, who had a breakout 2018 season and a lot was expected of him after signing with Washington. So far he's not looked the best. He gave up 7 hits and 2 walks in his first outing and the strikeouts weren't there (4 in 6 innings). He had 9 K's in his second start, but gave up 3 HR's. I think now is as good a time as any to fade Corbin until he shows us something. Give me the Pirates +165!

MLB | Rays vs Blue Jays
Play on: Rays -125 at betonline

Scott "The Bulldog" Rickenbach MLB Game #965 Friday Free Pick Tampa Bay Rays Money Line (-) @ Toronto Blue Jays @ 7:05 ET - The Blue Jays are not a very good baseball team this season. Yes they managed to score some runs in Boston via the long ball but this is an unimpressive lineup overall and Toronto is hitting just .198 on the season. The 4-9 Blue Jays now take on the 10-3 Rays and I feel we've got great line value here with the short road favorite. Tampa Bay was off yesterday while the Jays were battling the Red Sox at Fenway Park last night. From a situational standpoint, this is a great spot for Tampa. Also, the Rays are ranked 5th in the AL for batting average right now while the Jays are near the cellar. Ryne Stanek is expected to get the start in this one for Tampa as they go with one of their "bullpen games" and no matter who starts for either team in this game I like the better team at a great price so make this play as "action" when you place your bet. The projected starter for Toronto is Trent Thornton and the young rookie has made a great impression as his first two starts have gone very well. However, he faced the Tigers and Indians. Along with the Blue Jays, Detroit and Cleveland are the only other two teams in the league that are being held under .200 at the plate so far this season. The point is that Thornton is finally going to be challenged as he now faces a lineup that has been swinging the bats much better. The Rays are 10-2 their last 12 games and scored an average of 8 runs per game in sweeping the White Sox at Chicago to begin this week. Look for the Rays to remain hot while the Jays (2-8 L10) stay cold. Free Pick TAMPA BAY

My money is on the Marlins to cash in here as a big division home dog to the Phillies. Miami's not a team you are going to want to back often, but I like this spot. There's no denying Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara has potential. He showed that in his first start of 2019, limiting the Rockies to 4 hits in 8 shutout innings. Very next start he gives up 2 runs on 4 hits and 5 walks in just 4 innings at Atlanta. If you believe in home/away splits, I think it's more than worth a shot at this price to see if Alcantara doesn't put up another strong outing at home. Bet the Marlins +160!

Play on: Orioles +252 at pinnacle

The Baltimore Orioles (5-8 Overall, 4-2 Away) are headed to Fenway Park and face the struggling Boston Red Sox (4-9 Overall, 1-1 Home).
The Orioles are fresh off a 8-5 home loss against the Oakland Athletics. Baltimore will give the ball to Davis Hess (1-1, 2.70 ERA).
Hess is 0-2 with a 11.25 ERA in his last two starts against the Red Sox. Boston hit .351 against him in those outings.
Hess is also 0-1 with a 3.64 ERA in his last start at Fenway Park. The Sox lineup crushed him, hitting .364 against him in Boston.
The Red Sox will give Eduardo Rodriguez (0-2, 12.38 ERA) the start. Rodriguez is 6-3 with a 3.62 ERA in his last 10 starts (12 outings) against the Orioles.
He has held Orioles lineups to a .245 average in those showings. Rodriguez has struggled at home though. He is 9-10, carrying a 4.56 ERA in his last 33 starts (37 showings) at Fenway.
Lineups are hitting .260 against Rodriguez in Boston.
Baltimore is hitting .265 against left hand pitching this year.
Boston has struggled hitting in Fenway. They are averaging .235 this year in their first two home games of the season.
Take the Orioles in this one. With how big the number is, the one is worth it.

Mike Fiers just gave up 6 runs in 1 2/3 innings to the Astros in his last start. Fiers has a 5.64 ERA in eight previous starts against the Rangers. 1* Free MLB Pick on Houston Astros -140
We cashed in a winner on the Mariners yesterday, as they finished up a sweep of the Royals, improving them to 13-2 on the season. Yesterday's play on Seattle was easy, as they were playing with a ton of confidence against a bad Royals team that has lost 9 straight.
Sure the confidence is going to be there, but Houston is without a doubt the better team and you can bet the Astros will be out to send their division rivals a message this weekend. Keep in mind Houston is red-hot, they have won 6 straight and just pushed across 18 runs in their 3-game sweep of the Yankees.
Starting pitching also favors the Astros. They send out Wade Miley, who has a 2.31 ERA and 1.200 WHIP in 2 starts. Seattle will turn to Wade LeBlanc, who has a 4.77 ERA and 1.500 WHIP. Miley also owns a 2.89 ERA in 3 career starts against the Mariners, while LeBlanc owns a 5.65 ERA in 6 starts vs the Astros. Take Houston!

Jack’s Free Pick Friday: Houston Astros -138
After a slow start, the Houston Astros have gotten back to reality and won six straight games. They had yesterday off and will be fresh and ready to go Friday night for Game 1 of this series in Seattle.
The Mariners have been the surprise of the league, opening 13-2 this season. That’s not going to last. They had a big comeback win in extras over the Royals last night, so they won’t be fresh and will have had to fly back to Seattle from Kansas City.
Like many Astros pitchers before him, Wade Miley is resurrecting his career in Houston. He has been sharp, going 1-1 with a 2.31 ERA and 1.200 WHIP in two starts this season. Miley is also 2-1 with a 2.89 ERA and 1.285 WHIP in three career starts against Seattle.
Wade LeBlanc has a 4.77 ERA and 1.500 WHIP in two starts this season for Seattle, and he’s 1-1 with a 5.65 ERA and 1.535 WHIP in six career starts against Houston. The Astros are 7-1 in their last eight games following an off day. Houston is 19-7 in its last 26 trips to Seattle. Bet the Astros Friday.

My 1* Free Play is on the Houston Astros (10:10 EST).
I think this one sets up great for the red hot Astros. The Mariners return home after a 6-1 road trip, but they needed ten innings to win 7-6 at Kansas City just last night. Suffice it to say, I think they’ll predictably come out flat here in the first game back in front of the home town crowd.
The Astros have had a night off after sweeping the Yankees in a three-game set. Houston has now won six straight games and I believe it’ll keep the good times rolling in this favorable spot as well.
The Mariners hand the ball to Wade LeBlanc (2-0, 4.76 ERA), who is 1-1 with a ballooned 5.65 ERA in ten career appearances vs. the Astros.
Houston goes with Wade Miley (1-1, 2.31), who is 2-1 with a 2.89 ERA in three career starts vs. his former team.
At this price, I definitely think that Miley and the surging Astros are worth a second look in this particular match-up.
Good luck…Larry

MLB | Rockies vs Giants
Play on: Rockies +133 at 5Dimes

Free MLB Baseball Prediction From Doc's Sports :
Take Colorado over San Francisco (10 p.m., Friday, April 12)
The Colorado Rockies have gotten off to a very slow start this season, and they have been playing some sloppy baseball. San Francisco has been even worse, though, and the Giants look like one of the worst teams in MLB. San Francisco is hitting a woeful .203 as a team and scoring just 2.73 runs per game. The Giants have yet to win a series, and they lost three of their first round of home games. Chad Bettis has gotten off to a terrible start and has an ERA of nearly 12.00. He is due for a big outing, and I think he will get it here. Bettis has a decent 4.29 ERA in his career in San Francisco, and I think he will be able to slow down this struggling lineup.

Friday's Tip Sheet

Game of the Night: Brewers at Dodgers – 10:05 PM EST

The National League Championship Series went seven games last October as Los Angeles staved off Milwaukee for its second consecutive pennant. The Dodgers (8-6) return to Chavez Ravine tonight after suffering a four-game sweep at the hands of the Cardinals at Busch Stadium. Los Angeles opened up a pair of early leads in Games 1 and 4 of the series, but fell apart in each defeat, while dropping an 11-7 decision to St. Louis on Thursday.

The Brewers (8-5) remain in southern California after losing all three games to the Angels earlier this week. The normally reliable Milwaukee offense was limited to two runs in two of the defeats, while overcoming a 6-0 deficit in Game 2 to take an 8-7 lead before losing, 11-8. Milwaukee was swept for the first time since dropping all five games at Pittsburgh last July before making its run towards the NL Central title.

Julio Urias (0-0, 3.12 ERA) makes his third start of the season for the Dodgers, as the southpaw seeks his first victory. Urias has been dealt a pair of no-decisions so far, as he tossed five scoreless innings and struck out seven in a 4-2 defeat to San Francisco. In his next start at Colorado, Urias was staked to a 6-0 lead, but couldn’t escape the fourth inning in a 12-6 victory.

Corbin Burnes (0-1, 9.90 ERA) counters for Milwaukee, as the right-hander has allowed 11 earned runs in 10 innings of work. Burnes struck out 12 in his season debut against the Cardinals as Milwaukee rallied from a 4-1 deficit to stun St. Louis, 5-4 with two runs in the ninth inning. In his last outing against the Cubs, Burnes was knocked around for seven runs in five innings of a 14-8 defeat as he looks for his first win as a starter after posting a 7-0 mark in relief in 2018.

The Brewers won two of the first three meetings at Miller Park last season before the splitting a four-game set at Dodger Stadium, which included Los Angeles blowing out Milwaukee, 21-5 in the series finale. In the NLCS, the Brewers took two of the first three games before the Dodgers won the next two to take a 3-2 series advantage. Milwaukee forced Game 7 with a 7-2 blowout, but the Dodgers took home the pennant with a 5-1 triumph at Miller Park.

Astros at Mariners – 10:10 PM EST

The biggest shocker through the first two weeks of the season is the success in Seattle as the Mariners (13-2) sit atop the AL West. The expectations were pretty low going into the season for the M’s after they blew up their team in the offseason, but things are going much better than anticipated. Seattle has captured all five series, including rallying past Kansas City on Thursday, 7-6 in 10 innings to grab the four-game sweep.

The team that has owned the division the last few seasons is currently looking up at the Mariners as the Astros (8-5) have overcome a slow start to win six straight games. Houston finished off a perfect 6-0 homestand after sweeping Oakland and New York, while scoring at least six runs in four of those victories. After beating Tampa Bay in the series opener, 5-1, the Astros plated three runs or less in six of the past seven games before the recent power explosion, which has resulted in a 3-1 mark to the OVER the last four contests.

It’s a battle of Wades on the mound tonight as Houston’s Wade Miley (1-1, 2.31 ERA) opposes Seattle’s Wade LeBlanc (2-0, 4.76 ERA) at T-Mobile Park. Miley rebounded from a loss at Tampa Bay in his first start to toss 5.2 scoreless innings in a 6-0 home victory over Oakland last Saturday. LeBlanc has received terrific run support in two starts as the Mariners have scored 10 and 12 runs for the southpaw. In his first outing against Boston, LeBlanc rebounded from a rough first inning to go 5.1 innings in a 10-8 win.

Houston saw plenty of success at Seattle last season by winning seven of 10 road matchups, but all three wins by the Mariners came in the series openers. The Mariners have taken care of business at home with a 5-1 record, while cashing the OVER in six of the past seven games overall.

Rockies at Giants – 10:15 PM EST

The bottom two teams in the NL West continue their four-game series at Oracle Park after San Francisco edged Colorado on Thursday, 1-0. Recently acquired Kevin Pillar lifted the Giants (5-9) with a solo home run in the seventh inning for the lone run of the night, while Jeff Samardzija put together a brilliant outing on the mound with seven scoreless innings and striking out seven.

The Rockies (3-10) started the season with consecutive wins over the Marlins, but it has gone downhill since then as Colorado has lost nine of its past 10 games to sink to the basement of the NL West. Colorado has scored six runs in five separate games, but has plated three runs or fewer in the other seven contests.

Chad Bettis (0-2, 11.88 ERA) is looking to get not only the Rockies on track, but himself after giving up 11 earned runs in 8.1 innings of losses to the Rays and Dodgers. Colorado won two of Bettis’ three starts against San Francisco last season, which included a 5-3 victory at Oracle Park last May as a +130 underdog.

The Giants send out southpaw Drew Pomeranz (0-1, 4.00 ERA), who has allowed six hits and two earned runs in each of his first two outings. Pomeranz grabbed a victory as a +180 underdog against the Dodgers in his first start prior to a 3-0 setback to Tampa Bay. San Francisco has yet to win back-to-back games this season as the Giants own an 0-4 mark off a victory, while scoring one run or less in three of those defeats.

STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Trevor Williams, Pittsburgh Pirates (1-0, 2.25 ERA, $220): Williams has picked up right where he left off last season. The right hander has a nice 0.92 WHIP to go along with his solid ERA and issued just one walk so far this season.

That said, he’s only faced the Reds this year, so we’ll have to see how he does when he steps up the level of competition as Williams and the Pirates visit the Nationals tonight. Pittsburgh is currently a +158 road dog with a total of 8.

SLUMPING

Zack Wheeler, New York Mets (0-1, 10.24 ERA, $-200): When talking about the Mets starting pitching, most people have only good things to say. Unless, your name is Zack Wheeler, whose 2019 campaign has not started well.

The right-hander has a 1.86 WHIP and a .391 opponent on base percentage through his first two starts to go along with his ugly ERA. To be fair, both of his starts have come against the Nationals, so, maybe a different opponent will get him on the right track. Wheeler and the Mets visit the Braves as light -104 dogs tonight with a total of 9.

3 STRIKES

COMFORTABLE IN KC

Cleveland starter Carlos Carrasco has never mined playing the Royals at Kauffman Stadium, even when they were good. Carrasco has made 10 starts there over the course of his career with the Indians winning eight of those games. He has pitched to a 2.90 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP while racking up 67 punch outs. Carrasco starts there tonight as a -155 road favorite and a total of 7.5. Consider Cleveland here.

OUR FAVORITE UNDER UMP

C.B. Bucknor is back behind the plate tonight in San Francisco as the Giants. Bucknor is infamously known for his inconsistent strike zone and that has been a boon for total bettors the last several seasons, as the Under has gone 39-19-3 in the last 61 games when Bucknor is calling balls and strikes. That’s a 67.2 percent cash rate in a big sample size. The total for tonight’s Rockies-Giants game is currently sitting at 8.

NLCS REMATCH

The Brewers will get a chance to avenge their NLCS loss to the Dodgers when they begin a three-game weekend set in Los Angeles tonight. The Dodgers took the series in seven games where the Under went 4-2-1 with an average of 6.7 runs per game. But both teams have been riding their offenses early in the season and today’s starters Corbin Burns and Julio Urias, have a combined ERA of 13.02 (most thanks to Burns). Take a look at the Over 8 in this NLCS rematch.

Today's biggest bets and line moves: Bettors hammer Lightning odds vs. Blue Jackets
Patrick Everson

Tampa Bay was the NHL's No. 1 regular-season team by far, yet blew a 3-0 Game 1 lead against Columbus. However, the Lightning are drawing plenty of Game 2 money as huge -270 favorites tonight.

The NHL’s best team by a mile in the regular season somehow came unglued in its playoff opener and looks to rebound Friday night. Covers checks in on the action and odds movement for three of this evening’s Stanley Cup playoff games, with insights from Will Bernanke, lead analyst for CG Analytics in Las Vegas.

Columbus Blue Jackets at Tampa Bay Lightning – Open: -260; Move: -250; Move: -260; Move: -270

Tampa Bay posted 62 wins and 128 points in the regular season, and looked every bit the part of a Stanley Cup favorite through the first period of Wednesday’s Game 1 against Columbus. The top-seeded Lightning (62-17-3-1) had a 3-0 lead at first intermission, then gave up four answered goals and lost 4-3 as hefty -250 favorites.

Columbus needed a strong late-season push to nab the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, and appeared overmatched while allowing those three first-period goals. But the Blue Jackets (48-31-3-1) got a goal in the second, then scored three goals in a six-minute stretch of the third to nab a stunning road upset as +200 underdogs.

Bettors fully expect the best team in the NHL to rebound in this 7 p.m. ET faceoff.

“Ticket count is 64 percent Tampa Bay and money 81 percent Tampa Bay,” Bernanke said of moneyline action at CG books, including at The Cosmopolitan and Venetian on the Vegas Strip. “Puck line (Tampa Bay -1.5 goals) is also 98 percent Tampa Bay, and we also took a $10,000 bet this morning on Tampa to win the series at the adjusted price of -200.

“It looks like we will need Columbus to win and/or cover the puck line. Bettors feel there is no way on earth that Tampa falls behind 2-0 to the eighth-seeded Blue Jackets.”

Pittsburgh Penguins at New York Islanders – Open: +110; Move: +115; Move: +110; Move: +105; Move: +110

Pittsburgh has the Stanley Cup pedigree, but came up short in Wednesday’s best-of-7 series opener. The Penguins (44-26-10-3) traded goals throughout Game 1, tying it at 3 late in the third period, but losing 4-3 in overtime in a pick ‘em game.

New York failed to reach the postseason the past two years, but put up a solid 103 points to make the eight-team East field this year. The Islanders (49-27-2-5) then held up on home ice against Sidney Crosby and Co., and now have a shot at a 2-0 series lead in this 7:30 p.m. ET puck drop.

“Ticket count is 2/1 on Pittsburgh, and 92 percent of the money is on the Penguins,” Bernanke said, noting a similarity to the Columbus-Tampa game. “It looks like bettors feel there is no way Pittsburgh falls down 2-0.”

Vegas Golden Knights at San Jose Sharks – Open: -135; Move: -132; Move: -135; Move: -130; Move: -135; Move: -130

Vegas was the darling newcomer to the NHL last year, streaking all the way to the Stanley Cup Final before losing to Washington. This year’s playoffs got off to a much bumpier start, as the Golden Knights (43-33-5-2) had no answer in Wednesday’s Game 1, falling behind 3-0 on the way to a 5-2 loss as even-money road underdogs.

San Jose got out of the gate quickly as it began work to avenge a second-round loss to Vegas in the 2017-18 playoffs. The Sharks (47-27-6-3) led 3-0 less than eight minutes into the second period and salted away the game with an empty-netter late in the third period to win as -120 home favorites.

“Ticket count is 3/1 Knights and money is 2/1 Knights. Bettors feel Vegas will even the series up,” Bernanke said of a 10:30 p.m. ET clash. “It looks like bettors are trying their luck with the zig-zag theory, that the team down 1-0 in the series will win Game 2. So we need the Sharks, Columbus and New York.”

Friday free play is the Orioles and Red Sox to pile up the runs as these A.L. East Division rivals land Over the total at Fenway Park.

Baltimore enters this game having played 7 in a row Over the total. The Orioles pitching staff was shellacked for 31 big runs over their last 3 games at home against Oakland, as they have now played Over the total in 10 of their 13 games played this Spring!

Boston was involved in another high-scoring game themselves yesterday, as they came from 5-0 down to win, 7-6 in walk-off fashion at home against Toronto. That makes it 9-3 Over the total for the BoSox in their 12 games played this young season.

You throw in the fact that these teams played their last pair of games last season in the Over column, and the Over is 4-2-2 the last 8 times these division-rivals have met, and the track record for Friday suggests a wager on the Over should indeed be a winning wager.

David Hess will be your Baltimore starter, and while he has been a bright spot with a 2.70 ERA through his first pair of efforts, both of those games have played Over the total, and his pair of starts last year against Boston show an ERA of 11.26!

Eduardo Rodriguez will oppose for Boston, and he is off to a shaky 0-2 start to the year with an ERA over 12. Not surprisingly, both of the southpaw's starts have landed Over the total.

Too many "offensive" numbers that cannot be ignored tonight, so until both teams start showing some positive signs on the hill, best to look for the bats to continue to make major noise.

Orioles-Red Sox Over for Friday.

Comp play for Friday is the Yankees at home to take their weekend opener by at least 2 runs over the White Sox.

New York had the day off yesterday and had to stew about getting swept in their most recent 3 games at Minute Maid Park against the Houston Astros. The Yankees may be dealing with a slew of injuries, but they did hold leads in all 3 of those games, and wound up losing all 3.

Back at home tonight, and playing a team that has lost their last 5 - all of the losses by 4 runs or more - and stands at just 3-8 for the season should bode well for getting back on the rails for the Yanks. The Chicago White Sox are the un-proud owners of the worst ERA in the American League, as they enter play tonight sporting a 6.9 team ERA.

Lucas Giolito did take a no-hitter into the 7th inning in his season debut which was good for one of the Sox three wins this season, but in his second start, Giolito was rocked by the Mariners, as he allowed 5 runs on 6 hits, while also walking 4 as he could not work past the 5th inning. This will be his second career start against New York, and his first at Yankee Stadium. Last year, Giolito allowed 7 runs on 6 hits in just 5 innings in a home loss to the Yankees.

New York will counter with the slow-starting J.A. Happ who is 0-1 in his pair of starts this year with an ERA over 6. This start against the White Sox should be to his liking, as he is a lifetime 4-2 in his 6 starts against the Pale Hose with an ERA of 3.86.

This is the first of a nine game home stand for New York, and I like it to get off on the right foot with a 2 runs or better victory over the struggling ChiSox.

My free winner for tonight is on the Boston Red Sox Run Line, over the Baltimore Orioles.

Baltimore arrives in Beantown after hosting Oakland, and while the defending World Series champs already enjoyed their home opener, now I expect electricity out of Fenway for the first Friday night game of the season.

Though pitchers are automatically listed when making Run Line wagers, I am insisting you DO NOT worry about who the scheduled starters are. In the event of a scratch, you MUST re-wager the game with the new pitcher(s) who are scheduled. This play will stand no matter who pitches for either team.

That said, Boston southpaw Eduardo Rodriguez should be on the bump, and he'll be looking to erase what has been one of the roughest starts to the season for any Boston pitcher. Rodriguez was charged with six runs on eight hits over 3 2/3 innings against the A's in his last start and has allowed 12 runs over eight innings so far this season.

Good thing for Boston backers is he was 7-4 with a 3.70 ERA at home last season. And against Baltimore last season, opposing batters hit just .229, so he will bring some confidence to the mound for this one.

Take the Sox on the Run Line here.

COMPLIMENTARY WINNER

This was supposed to be a test for the Seattle Mariners, this home series against the two-time defending American League West champion Houston Astros.

Instead, something tells me the test is on the Astros, as the M's return to Seattle after a 6-1 road trip, and riding a six-game win streak thanks to an offensive surge.

Seattle has homered in all 15 games, breaking the mark of 14 at the start of a season set by the 2002 Cleveland Indians. The M's have been led offensively by Dan Vogelbach, who has hit .462 (12-for-26) with six home runs and 11 RBIs over the past seven games.

The Mariners have hit 36 homers, tying them with the 2000 St. Louis Cardinals for the most through 15 games. No other club has scored six or more runs in 13 of its first 15 games.

Now they have a chance to make a statement against the preseason-favored Astros, and I like the M's to go off on the series lid-lifter.

Don't list pitchers, just straight action, as Seattle sends a message.

Last night I hit the Toronto Maple Leafs with my main free pick. The bonus play on the Over, but the big freebie won. So, I am back on the ice for my free play tonight, as I love the Columbus Blue Jackets and Tampa Bay Lightning to stay Under the posted number.

After the display we saw the other night, in Game 1, I don't think either goaltender was pleased with his performance. The Columbus Blue Jackets stole home ice from the league's top seed, with a 4-3 win, and Andrei Vasilevskiy will be looking to avenge the loss.

In the 13 games following contests he allowed four or more goals, Vasilevskiy has a 2.30 goals against average (GAA), including four shutouts. In seven of those games he's allowed 2 or fewer goals.

I expect Tampa's goaltender to be on point tonight.

Meanwhile, for Columbus, it'll be Sergei Bobrovsky looking to improve on how he started the game, spotting the Lightning a 3-0 lead. And remember, Bobrovsky went 37-24-1 with a 2.58 GAA, .913 save percentage and nine shutouts in 62 games, leading the NHL in shutouts, and ranking second in wins.

The two-time Vezina Trophy winner was 18-8-0 with a 2.01 GAA, .930 save percentage and seven shutouts since Feb. 1. He's got the hot hand, and will also be at his best tonight.

Play this one low.

4* UNDER Blue Jackets-Lightning
