Indiana Pacers vs. Boston Celtics Preview and Predictions 04-17-2019 in NBA

The Boston Celtics responded to the loss of one of their defensive leaders by putting forth a dominant effort on that end of the floor to begin their best-of-seven Eastern Conference playoff series with the Indiana Pacers. They'll try to maintain their stranglehold on the Pacers and take a commanding 2-0 series lead when the teams meet Wednesday night in Boston.

Despite losing guard Marcus Smart (oblique) prior to the postseason, the Celtics outmuscled Indiana -- particularly during a 26-8 third quarter -- in Sunday's 84-74 Game 1 win, their third victory over the Pacers in a span of 17 days going back to the regular season. "They missed some shots, but we were really connected," Boston coach Brad Stevens told reporters. "We were really playing hard. We were really flying around." All-Star guard Kyrie Irving and forward Marcus Morris scored 20 points apiece for the Celtics, who had a 55-42 advantage on the glass and held Indiana to 33.3 percent shooting. Cory Joseph came off the bench to lead the Pacers with 14 points, while the team's five starters combined for 38 on 15-of-44 from the floor.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, TNT, FS Indiana, NBCS Boston

ABOUT THE PACERS: Sometimes it comes down to simply making enough shots, and Indiana was nowhere close to achieving that goal in Game 1, especially during the third quarter when they were 2-of-19 from the floor. "We've got to shake this off and realize there was a lot of good in there," guard Wesley Matthews told reporters. "I don't think if we played with our eyes closed we could have an eight-point quarter again." Matthews and Joseph hit a pair of 3-pointers apiece while their teammates combined to go 2-of-17 from long range.

ABOUT THE CELTICS: Irving had to watch Boston's run to the Eastern Conference finals from the sidelines last season due to injury, but he made the most of his first playoff game with the team by leading the defensive charge. "I just try to be aggressive on the ball, be in the right spots," Irving, who also had a team-high seven assists, told the media. "I just really want to be aggressive and really be the head of the snake." Forward Jayson Tatum scored 15 points and was the only Celtic to shoot better than 50 percent from the field by hitting 6-of-11 shots -- 3-of-3 from beyond the arc.

BUZZER BEATERS
1. Celtics C Al Horford had 10 points, 11 rebounds and five assists in Game 1.

2. SF Bojan Bogdanovic led the Pacers' starting five with 12 points in the opener.

3. Boston hit 18-of-22 free throws in Game 1, while Indiana was 12-of-21.

PREDICTION: Celtics 102, Pacers 93

Detroit Pistons vs. Milwaukee Bucks Preview and Predictions 04-17-2019 in NBA

The Detroit Pistons felt the absence of Blake Griffin in Game 1 on Sunday, but even the return of an All-Star might not have been enough to overcome the Milwaukee Bucks. The Pistons will try to bounce back and steal homecourt advantage from the NBA-best Bucks when they visit Milwaukee for Game 2 on Wednesday.

Detroit fell behind 38-18 after the first quarter in Game 1 and was never in the contest before finally falling 121-86. "We didn't meet the level of physicality and then we tried - we got some cheap fouls," Pistons coach Dwane Casey told reporters. "The speed of the game, we've got to get up to. We were all over the map defensively. Didn't get anything done. But we've got another level we have to get to with our intensity, physicality, because they're coming through there with violence, Euro stepping, throwing elbows. We've got to make sure we get our level of competitiveness up to start the game. You can't spot a great team like this that many points and expect to get back into it." Most of those drives to the basket from the Bucks were coming from MVP candidate Giannis Antetokounmpo, who breezed to 24 points and 17 rebounds in 23 minutes. "I just tried to be aggressive," Antetokounmpo told reporters. "I wanted to start the game aggressive. I knew if I was in aggressive mode all game, good things would happen."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBATV, FS Detroit, FS Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

ABOUT THE PISTONS: Griffin battled a knee injury at the end of the regular season and was held out of Game 1 by the medical staff, which will have the final say in when he returns. "He's itching to play," Casey told reporters of Griffin. "He's lobbying. He wants to play. It's the medical staff. The doctors are the ones who are making those decisions. Not me. Not Blake. That's what we're working with. We have an excellent medical staff. When his body says he's ready - whether it's Wednesday night or Saturday - he'll be available." Luke Kennard led Detroit with 21 points off the bench in Game 1 while center Andrew Drummond was held to 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting before drawing a flagrant 2 foul and being ejected.

ABOUT THE BUCKS: Milwaukee coach Mike Budenholzer praised his team's readiness to start the playoffs and Antetokounmpo echoed those statements while questioning the readiness of his opponents. "I don't know if they were ready for us," Antetokounmpo told reporters. "We just tried to focus on ourselves." Seven players scored in double figures for the Bucks, who knocked down 15 3-pointers and totaled 31 assists on 44 field goals while outscoring the Pistons in the paint 52-38 in the easy win.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Griffin drew a technical foul while on the bench in Game 1 for arguing after Drummond was ejected.

2. Milwaukee PF Nikola Mirotic (thumb) scored four points in 15 minutes off the bench after missing the final 11 games of the regular season.

3. Detroit PF Thon Maker, who started in place of Griffin, was held to four points on 2-of-10 shooting, including 0-of-6 from 3-point range.

PREDICTION: Bucks 116, Pistons 96

Utah Jazz vs. Houston Rockets Preview and Predictions 04-17-2019 in NBA

The Houston Rockets annihilated Utah in the opener and look to take a 2-0 lead when they host the Jazz on Tuesday in the second game of the Western Conference first-round series. Seven players scored in double digits and the fourth-seeded Rockets made 15 3-pointers while posting an easy 122-90 victory over fifth-seeded Utah.

Houston star guard James Harden had 29 points in Game 1 but he can't get last season's five-game postseason series win over the Jazz out of mind. "I don't mean to bring up last year, but we played pretty well in Game 1 last year and they came in here in Game 2 and beat us," Harden told reporters of the second-round series. "It's only one game. They're going to make adjustments and we have to make adjustments." Utah star shooting guard Donovan Mitchell said his team has to view the 32-point trouncing as just a loss and forget about the margin of defeat. "We could have won this game by 90, lost the game by 90, won by 1, lost by 1. It's one game," Mitchell told reporters. "It's not like they get two wins. It's just about making adjustments and not overreacting to what happened."

TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, TNT, AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain (Utah), AT&T SportsNet Southwest (Houston)

ABOUT THE JAZZ: Utah had trouble halting the Rockets from the outside but also allowed center Clint Capela (16 points, 12 rebounds) to get free for easy baskets and coach Quin Snyder said the defense has to be improved in Game 2. "You're going to give something up against the Rockets," Snyder told reporters. "We just don't want to make it easy. We had some breakdowns in the half court, no question. Some of that is going to happen even when you're good, because of their ability to make plays." Mitchell scored 19 points in Game 1 but was 7-of-18 shooting and committed five turnovers.

ABOUT THE ROCKETS: Harden was 11-of-26 shooting as Utah mixed up its defenses while keeping him seven points below his season average. "They throw something at him and they might get him a little bit and he figures it out and they don't get him anymore," Houston coach Mike D'Antoni told reporters of the strategies against Harden. "He's so good offensively it makes me laugh. He's just so good I don't know what you do ... you're not stopping him. I don't care what you do." Harden, who made four 3-pointers, also had 10 assists and eight rebounds in the victory.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. SG Eric Gordon (17 points) and SFs P.J. Tucker (11) and Danuel House Jr. (11) all had three 3-pointers for the Rockets in Game 1.

2. Utah C Rudy Gobert was 8-of-10 shooting while recording 22 points and 12 rebounds in Game 1.

3. Houston PG Chris Paul (14 points, seven assists) was 7-of-12 shooting in Game 1 after being 8-of-21 in two regular-season contests against the Jazz.

PREDICTION: Rockets 119, Jazz 105

Boston Bruins vs. Toronto Maple Leafs Preview and Predictions 04-17-2019 in NHL

Mitch Marner gained the appreciation of his team -- and perhaps a few in the dental profession -- after sliding in front of a pair of blasts from David Pastrnak in the waning moments of their last contest. Marner hopes to help the Maple Leafs push the Boston Bruins to the brink of elimination on Wednesday when the clubs play Game 4 of their Eastern Conference first-round series in Toronto.

"I mean, there's dentists for a reason, so whatever. Luckily enough, it didn't hit me in the face, but it could have been a tough result if it had," Marner said on Tuesday, one day after the Maple Leafs' 3-2 win in Game 3. The 21-year-old Marner recorded his 16th point (five goals, 11 assists) in 16 career playoff games and third of the series after setting up Auston Matthews' power-play goal in the second period. Boston's vaunted top line of Patrice Bergeron, Brad Marchand and Pastrnak has combined for just six points in the series, four of which came in the club's 4-1 win in Game 2 on Saturday. By comparison, that group combined for 30 points (nine goals, 21 assists) in last year's seven-game series against Toronto, and Marchand (seven assists) and Pastrnak (six goals, three assists) also enjoyed sterling performances in four regular-season meetings versus the Maple Leafs.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network, NESN (Boston), CBC, TVAS (Toronto)

ABOUT THE BRUINS: Charlie Coyle capped a five-goal second period when he scored for the second time in as many contests, tying him with Bergeron for the team lead in goals (two). The 27-year-old Massachusetts native's scoring surge is a welcome sight considering he had just 12 points since Jan. 7 dating back to when he played with Minnesota. David Krejci also tallied in Game 3, giving him five points (three goals, two assists) in seven meetings with the Maple Leafs in 2018-19.

ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAFS: Andreas Johnsson stepped up in place of the suspended Nazem Kadri, collecting a pair of power-play points (one goal, one assist) in Game 3 while logging just over two minutes of ice time with the club enjoying the man advantage. Matthews also recorded a multi-point performance with a goal and an assist, pushing his career point total to seven (five goals, two assists) in seven career home playoff games. "It's another level when you score one in the playoffs, especially at home," the 21-year-old Matthews said. "It feels like an earthquake under you."

OVERTIME

1. Boston C Marcus Johansson (illness) and Ds John Moore (upper body) and Connor Clifton (upper body) returned to practice on Tuesday, with coach Bruce Cassidy labeling the first two players as game-time decisions for Game 4.

2. Toronto C John Tavares won 10 of his 16 faceoffs when matched up against Bergeron.

3. Bruins C Danton Heinen has two goals and an assist in his last four games

PREDICTION: Bruins 3, Maple Leafs 1

Nashville Predators vs. Dallas Stars Preview and Predictions 04-17-2019 in NHL

The Dallas Stars feel they have deserved a better fate through the first three games of their Western Conference first-round series, but the immediate goal is figuring out a way to earn a victory at home against the Nashville Predators. The Stars will look to level the series when they host the Central Division champions in Game 4 on Wednesday night.

After stealing home-ice advantage with a 3-2 victory at Nashville in the series opener, the Stars gave it right back with Monday's 3-2 setback to remain winless in three home games against the Predators this season. "It's 2-1, I think we've been the better team two out of three games," coach Jim Montgomery said after his club unleashed 42 shots on goal in Game 3. "Keep playing like that, usually hockey gods get back on your side." Nashville was relieved to have its first lead of the series after watching Dallas erase a two-goal deficit, but the team realizes there is a long way to go. "It's a huge win for us after going down in Game 1, but I don't want to talk about momentum or anything like that because it's such a dangerous thing," netminder Pekka Rinne said. "You lose that grip right away when you start thinking about it, so I think we have to prepare for Game 4 like it's Game 1 or Game 7."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, USA, Sportsnet, TVAS2, FS Tennessee (Nashville) FS Southwest

ABOUT THE PREDATORS: It wasn't just the sheer volume of saves made by Rinne that was the decisive factor in Game 3 -- he registered five of his 40 saves with Dallas on a 5-on-3 power play and kept the score tied by denying captain Jamie Benn point-blank in the third period. "Every once in while he makes one like that you roll your eyes and say, 'How did he do that?'" Nashville defenseman P.K. Subban said. "He's been doing that for a long time." Rocco Grimaldi has scored in back-to-back games after replacing forward Brian Boyle, who is week-to-week following an appendectomy.

ABOUT THE STARS: Rinne's counterpart, Ben Bishop, had not surrendered more than two goals since Feb. 4 but that streak halted in painful fashion when Mikael Granlund's seemingly harmless shot from just inside the blue line got past him for the game-winner. "You just got to put it behind you and go out and play our game," Bishop said. "Some nights, there are unfortunate bounces. Some nights, you're lucky. It doesn't change anything. It's the same routine, night in and night out." Despite an abundance of chances, Dallas is 1-for-13 on the power play in the series.

OVERTIME

1. Stars F Tyler Seguin scored the tying goal Monday and recorded a staggering 11 shots on net.

2. Predators F Wayne Simmonds also is week-to-week after taking a puck off the knee in Game 2.

3. Stars F Mats Zuccarello, who played in only two games since he was acquired via trade, has scored twice in the series.

PREDICTION: Stars 3, Predators 2

Calgary Flames vs. Colorado Avalanche Preview and Predictions 04-17-2019 in NHL

Earning the No. 1 seed has not translated into an advantage in the opening round of the playoffs, as Tampa Bay found out in the East and Calgary is hoping to avoid in the West. The Flames, who rolled up a Western Conference-best 107 points, have dropped two in a row to fall into a 2-1 series hole entering Game 4 against the host Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday night.

Nathan MacKinnon delivered the decisive tally in overtime in Game 2 and ignited Colorado by scoring twice on the power play in the first period of Monday's 6-2 romp. "We're just trying to get to four wins," MacKinnon said. "We feel good, but at the same time, we got to move on. It's two wins now, but we need to regroup and get ready for a huge game Wednesday." Calgary was overwhelmed from the outset in Game 3, allowing 21 of Colorado's 56 shots on goal in the opening period and putting the Avalanche on the power play eight times, but the players know how quickly the momentum can change. "It's a 2-1 series. We win tomorrow, we go back best-of-three with two home games," Flames captain Mark Giordano said. "If you look at it that way, it's a positive. But we have to put in the work and get the win."

TV: 10 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network, CBC, TVAS (Calgary), Altitude (Colorado)

ABOUT THE FLAMES: While both teams rely a high-powered top line, but Calgary's No. 1 unit of Johnny Gaudreau, Sean Monahan and Elias Lindholm need to start producing after being held to a collective four points through three games. "Everyone has got to be better, not just one guy," said Gaudreau, who has managed only one assist after matching MacKinnon by racking up a career-high 99 points during the regular season. Third-line forward Sam Bennett has a team-high four points while defenseman Rasmus Andersson is second on the team with three points.

ABOUT THE AVALANCHE: Cale Makar made a loud introduction just one day after signing a three-year contact with Colorado, becoming the first defenseman in league history to make his NHL debut in the playoffs and score a goal. "It's pretty weird. Pretty special, though," said Makar, a No. 4 overall pick in 2017 who led Massachusetts to the Frozen Four and was named the Hobey Baker Award winner this season. "Obviously, it's a cool moment." Forward Matt Nieto, who entered the series without a goal since Dec. 6, has notched short-handed tallies in each of the past two games.

OVERTIME

1. Avalanche F Mikko Rantanen, who missed the final eight games of the regular season, has consecutive two-point contests.

2. Flames Fs Michael Frolik and James Neal have yet to dent the scoresheet.

3. Avalanche D Samuel Girard (upper body) could rejoin the lineup after sitting out Game 3.

PREDICTION: Avalanche 4, Flames 3

RECOMMENDED CHOICES
The Walker Group Picks

# 5 SOCKS 8/5

# 4 INDIAN GEM 9/5

# 2 AUBREY 3/1

SOCKS has a decent shot to take this race. Has garnered strong Equibase Speed Figures in dirt route races in the past. Wethey has been sizzling the last month, winning at a nifty 20 percent rate. Will almost certainly come out very solid - I have liked the way this mare has moved speedily to the lead recently. INDIAN GEM - Looks solid for the conditions of this competition today, showing solid figures in dirt route races lately. Recorded a very strong Equibase Speed Fig last time out. AUBREY - Must be carefully examined here on the basis of the figs in the speed department alone. Has a very solid shot for this event if you like back class.

#7 COPPER TRAIL (ML=6/1)

COPPER TRAIL - Have to make this filly a contender; she comes off a solid race on April 1st. I think that the addition of blinks today will keep her mind on the race at hand.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 WAFFLESORPANCAKES (ML=6/5), #1A PINK HALDER (ML=5/2), #1 SPIT'S IMAGE (ML=5/2),

WAFFLESORPANCAKES - This filly almost certainly won't be right there near the finish line. PINK HALDER - Had to show me lots more last time around the track. Never made much of an impact. Don't feel this steed will make an impact in today's event. That last speed rating was mediocre when compared with today's class figure. SPIT'S IMAGE - You always think this horse has a shot to cross the finish line in first, but she comes up short often. Mahoning Valley Race Course has not been kind to this pony.

#6 CIVIL STONES (ML=6/1)
#2 YOU BETTER NOT (ML=4/1)
#4 CALLING INDIA (ML=9/5)

CIVIL STONES - I really like sprint horses that make a fast turnaround. Peltroche rode this racer for the initial time last out and comes right back this time. This pony coming off a solid race in the last 30 days is a win candidate in my book. As the only speedy sort in the race, I expect this mare to be long gone. YOU BETTER NOT - I like the fact that this first time starter's recent works have been over this track. Gets help from Hanagan with the addition of Lasix. CALLING INDIA - Trainer Viands moves this animal down in class ranks to face much lower class horses. Look for a nice effort racing against these lower level horses. After the race aboard this equine on Mar 29th, the jockey is going to be acquainted with the filly much better. I like the fact that this filly's last figure, 41, is tops in this field.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 RED BEAN SONDE (ML=2/1), #3 BINN THERE (ML=5/1),

RED BEAN SONDE - Don't feel this pony will make an impact in today's event. That last speed rating was pedestrian when compared with today's class rating. BINN THERE - Finished seventh last out. Would have to get better to finish in the money in today's event. This entrant ran a run-of-the-mill speed rating last race out. She shouldn't run much better and will probably suffer defeat today running that figure.

# 1 BIG BIRTHDAY 5/2

# 4 PAUSEFORTHECAUSE 2/1

# 2 HONOR WAY 3/1

I've got to go with BIG BIRTHDAY. Keep this filly in your exotics as Franco has given backers some double digit dividends. Is a solid contender - given the 96 speed rating from her most recent race. Is a strong contender based on figs recorded recently under today's conditions. PAUSEFORTHECAUSE - Has very good early pace and should fare strongly against this field. With a solid 100 Equibase Speed Fig last time out, will definitely be a factor in this race. HONOR WAY - She has been running admirably and the Equibase Speed Figures are among the best in this field. A nice ROI of +66 with this jock and handler duo.

Game 2 – Pacers at Celtics – 7:05 PM EST – TNT
Boston leads series, 1-0

Indiana dropped three of four matchups with Boston this season, but looked to steal Game 1 of their first round series at TD Garden. The Pacers led the Celtics, 45-38 at halftime, but Indiana went ice-cold in the third quarter by getting outscored, 26-8, while converted only two field goals. Boston finished off Indiana, 84-74 to cash as 7 ½-point favorites and easily hit the UNDER on the total of 210 ½.

The Celtics improved to 4-0 in the last four playoff series openers, led by Kyrie Irving and Marcus Morris’ 20 points apiece. Irving shot 6-of-17 in his Boston postseason debut after missing last year’s run to the Eastern Conference Finals with a knee injury. Both the Celtics and Pacers were miserable from the floor (Indiana 33%, Boston 36%), but Nate McMillan’s squad misfired on 21-of-27 attempts from three-point range, while Cory Joseph led the way with 14 points.

Boston ended a seven-game ATS slide at TD Garden, marking its first home cover since March 1 against Washington. The 74 points allowed by the Celtics marks the best defensive effort this season as Boston yielded 77 points to Chicago on December 8, while Brad Stevens’ team gave up 83 points twice to Cleveland in last year’s Eastern Conference Finals.

VegasInsider.com NBA expert Tony Mejia checks in with his take on this matchup, “It’s easy to go into Game 2 and ride the UNDER eyes-closed given the series-opening result, but keep in mind that the Pacers were only held under 90 points three times this season and bounced back to top the century mark each time they took the floor next. Since the Celtics have only had two instances where they held opponents under 100 points in consecutive games in 2019, trends favor Indiana bouncing back, but it is going to need a better game plan than it came out with to open the second half after leading at the break.”

From the Pacers’ perspective, Mejia breaks down what they need to do in order to bounce back, “Tyreke Evans will have to be more aggressive and Indiana will need Bojan Bogdanovic and Doug McDermott to shoot far better than they managed in shooting a combined 0-for-7 from 3-point range.”

Boston has won and covered in all four Game 2’s under Stevens after coming up victorious in Game 1, as all four wins came by double-digits. Indiana suffered only second ATS loss in the last 11 road playoff games dating back to 2016, while the Pacers were dealt their first postseason defeat by at least 10 points since Game 3 of the 2016 first round against the Raptors.

Game 2 – Pistons at Bucks – 8:05 PM EST – NBA TV
Milwaukee leads series, 1-0

It feels like this series was over even before it began when news broke that Pistons’ All-Star Blake Griffin was sidelined due to a lingering knee injury. Detroit didn’t have much of a chance even with Griffin available as the Pistons lost all four regular season meetings with the top-seeded Bucks, but Sunday’s Game 1 at Fiserv Forum was enough proof this series will be done quickly.

Milwaukee jumped out to a 38-18 advantage after one quarter and cruised to a 121-86 blowout over Detroit to improve to 5-0 SU and 4-0-1 ATS the last five matchups. All five Bucks’ starters finished in double-figures, led by MVP candidate Giannis Antetokounmpo’s 24-point, 17-rebound performance. The Bucks shot 49% from the floor and knocked down 15 three-pointers, while limiting Detroit to 38% shooting as reserve Luke Kennard led the Pistons with 21 points.

In the three losses at Fiserv Forum this season, the Bucks have outscored the Pistons by 23, 23, and 35, which doesn’t give Detroit backers a lot of faith even as hefty 15-point underdogs in Game 2. The last double-digit ‘dog that lost a first round series opener by more than 30 points and covered in Game 2 was the Mavericks in 2016, who tripped up the Thunder as 14-point underdogs, 85-84.

Game 2 – Jazz at Rockets – 9:35 PM EST – TNT

Houston leads series, 1-0

Last season, Houston needed five games to eliminate Utah in the second round of the playoffs. The Rockets continued their postseason domination of the Jazz in Sunday’s 122-90 rout to easily cash as 6 ½-point favorites. Seven Rockets posted double-figures, paced by James Harden’s 29 points, while Houston knocked down 15-of-41 three-pointers for its third consecutive victory over Utah since losing the first two meetings with the Jazz this season.

Utah was limited to 39% shooting from the floor, while getting outscored, 39-19 in the fourth quarter. Rudy Gobert led the Jazz with 22 points and 12 rebounds, but the Jazz misfired on 20 three-point attempts. Quin Snyder’s team lost each of their series openers last season, as they managed to grab Game 2 victories as underdogs against Oklahoma City in the first round and Houston in the second round.

Mejia is back with his thoughts for Game 2 at the Toyota Center, “This is definitely one of those matchups where the old cliché about the series not starting until the home team loses a game applies, but the Jazz need to at least save a little face before heading back to Salt Lake City. Donovan Mitchell and Joe Ingles shot a combined 8-for-22 while the bench finished an incredible 4-for-26, which included a pair of missed Grayson Allen layups that helped the Game 1 total remain just UNDER the closing number of 212.5. Jae Crowder and Royce O’Neale have been reliable all season and must be better. Considering the likelihood that they bounce back, the OVER may be the way to go in this one.”

All three matchups in Houston have finished UNDER the total, as the oddsmakers did not move off the 212 ½ number from Game 1. The Rockets moved to 7-1-1 to the UNDER in the past nine games at the Toyota Center, while improving to 6-0-1 ATS the last seven home contests. The Jazz were riding a five-game ATS hot streak as a road underdog prior to Sunday’s blowout loss, as Utah owns a 9-4 ATS mark under Snyder in the playoffs when receiving points away from Salt Lake City.

My money is on the Mariners to cash in a win at home against the Indians. Seattle has lost 5 straight after their red-hot start to the year, but this is a great spot for them to get back on track at the plate. Cleveland's Carlos Carrasco has given up 14 runs on 22 hits in a mere 10 innings of work over 3 starts. In his 2 road starts this year, he's given up 6 runs to the Twins in 4 1/3 and 6 to the Royals in less than an inning. Bet the Mariners +124!

Jack’s Free Pick Wednesday: Pittsburgh Pirates -104
I’m back on the Pirates Wednesday after cashing them in as my free play Tuesday. These are two teams going in opposite directions as the Pirates are 8-3 in their last 11 games overall, while the Tigers have lost four straight coming in.
Pittsburgh has a huge edge on the mound today behind Trevor Williams, who is picking up where he left off last season with a dominant second half. Williams has gone 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA and 0.982 WHIP in three starts this season. He is 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 0.615 WHIP in two career starts against Detroit.
Spencer Turnbull has been roughed up this season for the Tigers. He is 0-2 with a 4.80 ERA and 1.533 WHIP in three starts this season despite facing three light-hitting lineups in the Blue Jays, Royals and Indians.
Pittsburgh is 20-4 in its last 24 vs. AL teams that score 3.9 or fewer runs per game. The Tigers are hitting .203 and scoring just 2.7 runs per game this season. It’s a minor miracle they are .500 on the season with those numbers. Bet the Pirates Wednesday.

Play on: Pirates -107 at BMaker

My 1* Free Play is on the Pittsburgh Pirates (6:40 EST).
The Tigers have lost four straight and I think they’re ripe for the picking today as well.
Detroit has scored four or fewer runs in 14 of its 16 games thus far.
That doesn’t bode well for Tigers’ starter Spencer Turnbull (0-2, 4.80 ERA) who makes his eighth major league appearance and seventh career start and who is still looking for his first major league victory.
That leaves the door open for the Pirates and Trevor Williams (1-0, 2.45) who has gone at least six innings in each of his first three starts, most recently holding the Nats to two runs over seven innings of work.
Also note that in two career starts Williams has pretty much “owned” Detroit by giving up no runs and one hit over 13 innings.
I think the writing is on the wall and a major blowout is in the cards. Consider the visiting side in this one.
Good luck…Larry

1* Free NBA Pick on Pacers/Celtics OVER 203
After watching Boston and Indiana combine for a mere 158 points in the Celtics 84-74 win, I think a lot of people are going to be inclined to take the UNDER in Game 2 with a total that's 40+ more points than what they just had.
Defense is definitely going to be a staple in this series, but I think we see some regressing back to the mean in Game 2 and a much higher scoring game that finishes past the mark. Keep in mind that each of the last 3 meetings between these two saw at least 214 combined points.
OVER is 14-3 in the Pacers last 17 after scoring less than 75 points and 5-1 in their last 6 off a SU loss. OVER is 19-8 in last 27 home games off a home win by 10 or more and 14-4 in their last 18 games played in April. Take the OVER!

He beat the Phillies 15-1 while shutting them out for 6 innings in his first start on April 10th. Hellickson is 2-2 with a 3.29 ERA in 5 lifetime starts against the Giants. Jeff Samardzija is 2-8 with a. 4.99 ERA in 10 lifetime starts against the Nationals, including 0-6 with a 7.39 ERA in his last 6 starts against them, yielding 26 earned runs in 31 2/3 innings. 1 Unit FREE PLAY on Atlanta Braves -158
After getting upset in Game 1 by the Diamondbacks at home, the Braves should bounce back with a win in Game 2 Wednesday. Kevin Gausman was dominant for the Braves last season after getting traded from the Orioles. He is now 1-1 with a 2.84 ERA and 0.87 WHIP in his first three starts of 2019 as well. Zack Godley is 1-1 with a 7.41 ERA and 1.47 WHIP in three starts for the Diamondbacks in 2019. Godley has an identical 7.41 ERA and 1.59 WHIP in three previous starts against the Braves. Atlanta is 10-2 in its last 12 home games against a right-handed starter. The Braves are 6-1 in Gausman’s last seven home starts. It’s worth laying the big price on Atlanta at home today with Gausman over Godley. Give me the Braves.

MIKE LUNDIN'S BLUE JAYS @ TWINS FREE PICK
The Toronto Blue Jays picked up a 6-5 win over the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday. I expect another slugfest here Wednesday night with Blue Jays' rookie right-hander Trent Thornton going toe-to-toe with Twins righty Jake Odorizzi.
Thornton (0-1, 4.61 ERA) tossed five scoreless innings in his MLB debut on March 31, but his past two starts have not been quite as good. His last was the worst, when he allowed five runs on eight hits (three homers) in just three innings of an 11-7 loss to Tampa Bay.
Odorizzi (0-2, 6.35 ERA) gave up three runs in 4 2/3 innings of a 9-6 road loss at NY Mets last time out. He has struggled with his command all season and issued nine walks through 11 1/3 innings of work.
Over is 5-2 in Blue Jays last 7 overall. Over is 4-0 in Blue Jays last 4 games vs. a right-handed starter.
Free pick on OVER.

Yesterday, Ben Burns easily won his complimentary selection on the Raptors. Today, he takes a look at Game 2 of the Pistons/Bucks series. Admittedly, the Pistons didn't look too good in Game 1. Still, this is an awful lot of points to be giving a well-coached team. The two days off in between games will have allowed the Pistons plenty of time to make adjustments. Note that they're 11-3 SU/ATS, when playing with two day's rest. They're also 7-3 SU/ATS when they were off a game in which they trailed by 15 or more, at halftime. With the Bucks just 6-9 ATS the past 15 times that they were off a home win by 20 or more, consider grabbing all those points with the Pistons.

Houston (542) over Utah
9:35 Eastern…
Houston won 122-90 in game #1 versus Utah, can they repeat? The Rockets are now on a 32-10 SU run at home, while going 24-16-2 ATS in their building. The shocked Jazz come in on a 1-3 SU run and seemingly looked confused at times in game #1. Granted Utah shows 20-6-1 ATS off a SU loss, however they just might be in over their heads tonight. Realize NBA teams that go through a blowout loss have the tendency to rebound, and Utah has the defense (#2 in efficiency) to support a reversal. Still Houston is on an 8-3 SU run against the Jazz, while the chalk is 9-4-1 ATS L14 in the series. The Rockets have averaged 116 points the last three games. Houston is 6-0-1 ATS at home and 7-1-1 ATS against the West. In addition, the Rockets come in 4-1 ATS in the Conference Quarterfinal round. In game #1, Houston had a surprising 9.1% turnover ratio in game #1, so we’ll stay with the home unit. Good Luck.
