Milwaukee Bucks vs. Toronto Raptors Preview and Predictions 05-19-2019 in NBA

The Milwaukee Bucks had their way with the Toronto Raptors in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals, grabbing a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series behind superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo and a standout bench. The Toronto Raptors will try to get back into the series at home when they host Game 3 on Sunday.

Antetokounmpo sandwiched a block between a pair of dunks to start Game 2 and finished with 30 points and 17 rebounds as Milwaukee jumped out to a big lead and cruised to a 125-103 victory. "To script those first three possessions - and the blocked shot, to me, is the one that stands out," Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer told reporters. "I think when Giannis is active and protecting the paint, protecting the rim - he plays so hard. He lays it all on the line all the time. It was a great start for us. I think everybody fed off of Giannis and how he started the game." The Raptors fell behind by 25 at the half and never got back into the game but coach Nick Nurse isn't looking to make any huge changes heading into Game 3. "We just weren't quite physical enough," Nurse told reporters after Game 2. "We weren't getting our screens set good enough. We weren't getting them off their screens good enough as well. We're going to have to be better or they're just going to look bigger and stronger than we are, and I don't necessarily think that's the case. We've got to play a little tougher."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE BUCKS: Ersan Ilyasova (17 points), Malcolm Brogdon (14) and George Hill (13) combined to go 17-of-29 from the floor off the bench in Game 2, with each of the three logging more than 20 minutes. "We have a great group of coaches who trust us, and I think it's all about chemistry," Ilyasova told reporters. "When we go to locker room, even when we lose the game, everybody stays positive. It's just we're all about the next game. I think for us it's big time when we go to the playoffs. The teams always make adjustments -- obviously with Giannis, double teams, and he sacrifices himself and finds the open guys. With the bench, we all realize the same way. When we set the tone, we have to come out with the same energy." Power forward Nikola Mirotic added 15 points in Game 2 - his highest output of the postseason.

ABOUT THE RAPTORS: Toronto center Marc Gasol struggled to two points on 1-of-9 shooting in Game 2 and placed the blame for the loss on himself. "I played really bad, and that set the tone," Gasol told reporters. "...The beginning set us in a real bad spot, and we couldn't get a grip on the game early on and I take full responsibility for that. We've got another chance to bounce back on Sunday, and that's all that matters right now." All-Star point guard Kyle Lowry scored 30 points on 10-of-15 shooting in Game 1 but slumped to 15 on 4-of-13 in Game 2.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Raptors SF Kawhi Leonard scored 31 points in each of the first two games.

2. Bucks C Brook Lopez went off for 29 points in Game 1 but slumped to six points on 1-of-7 shooting in Game 2.

3. Milwaukee is 4-0 on the road in the postseason.

PREDICTION: Bucks 113, Raptors 110

St. Louis Blues vs. San Jose Sharks Preview and Predictions 05-19-2019 in NHL

The San Jose Sharks and St. Louis Blues are comfortable with their Western Conference final shifting back to SAP Center, as the former is 7-3 in front of their own fans while the latter has made itself at home on the road with a 6-2 mark. The Sharks bid to win Game 5 of their third straight series on Sunday against the Blues, who split the first two games in San Jose.

"We're a confident group. We're a good road team and it's getting to our game early," St. Louis center Ryan O'Reilly told reporters after Friday's 2-1 win. "... We tied the series. It's a best-of-3 now and we have to start preparing for the next one." The Blues can thank Jordan Binnington for paving the way, as the 25-year-old made 29 saves to set a franchise record with his 10th postseason victory this year and became the 10th rookie goaltender to record double-digit wins in a single playoff run in league history. Tomas Hertl scored a power-play goal in the third period for his first point of the series and second on the road, as opposed to the 13 points (eight goals, five assists) he's posted at home. "We're right where I expected we would be, in a good spot going home, and we've got to get the job done," Sharks coach Peter DeBoer told reporters.

TV: 3 p.m. ET, NBC, CBC, Sportsnet, TVA

ABOUT THE BLUES: St. Louis has answered an 0-for-18 stretch on the power play by scoring twice in five opportunities with the man advantage the past two games. Tyler Bozak scored on the power play in the first period on Friday to boost his point total to four (two goals, two assists) in the past five games. "We wanted to have a really good start, and we sure did with (Ivan Barbashev's) goal and added to it with (Bozak's)," Blues forward David Perron told reporters. "It was a really good first period. We back off after that, but we got the win and that's what matters."

ABOUT THE SHARKS: With the hand pass controversy now in the rearview mirror, the talk swirling around the health of two-time Norris Trophy recipient Erik Karlsson has once again returned to the forefront. Karlsson, who missed 29 games in the regular season due to a groin issue, was a passenger on the bench for a seven-minute stretch in the latter half of the third period and was seen testing his skating during a stoppage in play. "I don't have anything for you there," DeBoer said of the health of the 28-year-old Karlsson, who notched his fourth point of the series by setting up Hertl's goal.

OVERTIME

1. St. Louis RW Vladimir Tarasenko has recorded at least a point in all four games of this series after being held off the scoresheet in seven of the previous nine contests.

2. San Jose D Brent Burns has 13 points (four goals, nine assists) in 10 home contests in the playoffs.

3. Blues D Vince Dunn will sit out his second straight game with an upper-body injury.

PREDICTION: Sharks 3, Blues 1

G3 - Bucks at Raptors
Kevin Rogers

The most dominating team from a pointspread standpoint in the playoffs is the top-seeded Bucks, who owns a 10-1 ATS record. Milwaukee travels to Toronto for Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals seeking a 3-0 series advantage at Scotiabank Arena this evening.

After the Bucks rallied for a narrow cover in the series opener, Milwaukee jumped out to a commanding 25-point halftime lead in Thursday’s Game 2 at Fiserv Forum. In spite of a 39-point third quarter for Toronto, the Raptors never really threatened in a 125-103 setback as 6 ½-point underdogs to fall into a 2-0 series hole.

Milwaukee’s offense topped the 30+ point mark in a quarter only once in Game 1, but scored 30 or more in three separate quarters in Game 2, including a 35-point output in the opening 12 minutes. MVP candidate Giannis Antetokounmpo led Milwaukee with 30 points and 17 rebounds, while three Bucks came off the bench to produce double-figure scoring, paced by 17 points from Eryan Ilyasova. For the second straight game, the Bucks weren’t great from three-point range by shooting 13-of-41, but knocked down 26 free throws and won third Game 2 of a series this postseason by more than 20 points.

Kawhi Leonard led all scorers with 31 points for Toronto, although he connected on just one three-pointer in four attempts. Kyle Lowry was terrific in the series opener with 30 points, but the Raptors’ guard continued his inconsistent playoff ways by scoring 15 points in Game 2, including a 2-of-9 effort from downtown. The only other Raptor to score in double-figures was Norman Powell with 14 off the bench as Pascal Siakam scored fewer than 10 points for only the second time in the playoffs.

The Raptors actually shot better in Game 2 than Game 1 from the floor (42% compared to 37%), but Toronto managed only 39 points in the opening half. Somehow, Toronto equaled their first half output in the third quarter, as the Raptors drilled five three-pointers during that 39-point spurt after halftime. The Raptors were able to trim a 28-point deficit in the third down to 13, but that’s as close as they got to fall into their first 2-0 hole on the road in the playoffs since the 2017 second round against Cleveland.

Toronto started the postseason with a solid 4-2 ATS record, but the Atlantic division champions have gone backwards in that department recently by covering in just two of the past eight games. The Raptors return north of the border trying to improve on a 4-3 ATS mark at Scotiabank Arena in the playoffs, while not allowing over 100 points at home in the past six postseason contests.

After watching the two teams combine for 228 points in Game 2, the oddsmakers opened the Game 3 total at 220 ½ and that’s the highest number posted in the first three games of this series. Chris David weighs in on the adjustment and provides his lean for Sunday’s total.

He said, “I’m not buying the move up by the oddsmakers and I believe we’re in for a grinder on Sunday even though Milwaukee has the potential to explode offensively on any given night. It’s crazy to realize that the Bucks are averaging 116.5 PPG in this series and the 3-point shooting has been off by their standards. Plus, that’s against a very solid Raptors defense that was allowing 96.9 PPG in the playoffs. What goes unnoticed about Milwaukee is its defense, which is only surrendering 101.4 PPG in the 14 postseason games. The worst efforts from that unit came in Game 1 of the second round, allowing 112 to Boston and the opener in this series when Toronto scored 100 points. Both those results came off layoffs and the Bucks looked flat and rusty. In every other playoff matchup on one or two days of rest, the defense has been very solid.”

“I’m assuming Raptors head coach Nick Nurse has to know by now that he can’t win a shootout, so I would expect him to slow down the game at home and muck it up. That approach has worked with Toronto so far, with the club allowing 90.4 PPG in five playoff wins at home. The Bucks came away with two road wins in this year’s regular season meetings between the pair from Canada but they only averaged 104.5 PPG. That was enough to get past Toronto, who struggled with an average of 95.5 PPG and not surprisingly the ‘under’ connected in both of those games. I’m expecting a similar outcome here and along with the game ‘under’ on Sunday, I believe a look at the Bucks Team Total Under (108 ½) is in play too,” David added.

Toronto has watched the ‘under’ go 5-2 at home in the playoffs while Milwaukee is 3-1 to the ‘over’ as a visitor in the postseason.

NBA expert Tony Mejia provides his thoughts headed into Game 3, “The Raptors have to flush Game 2 and concentrate on executing at home, where they’ve shown all season that they can beat anybody. While a lot went wrong in Milwaukee, Toronto was able to keep the Bucks from imposing their will in the third quarter, which is where the East’s top seed had gained the most separation through the first two rounds of this postseason.”

“It lost the third in Game 1 by a single point and made a run coming out of the locker room on Friday night, ultimately winning the quarter 39-31. Nurse can also take solace in Powell and Fred VanVleet and demonstrating a pulse since his team’s bench had been virtually non-existent for weeks now. At home, facing a must-win situation, this could be a spot where the Raps finally see it all come together exactly one week following the best moment in franchise history to keep Leonard’s Game 7 heroics against the 76ers from becoming a token consolation prize. Riding Toronto in the first and third quarters seems like the play here,” Mejia notes.

The Bucks are listed as a 2 ½-point underdog heading into Game 3, as Milwaukee won in both instances as a ‘dog at Boston in the second round. Mike Budenholzer’s team own a solid 9-2 ATS mark when receiving points this season, while winning in both regular season matchups at Toronto, each as a ‘dog.

Sharks, Blues confident going to Game 5
Associated Press

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) The San Jose Sharks have been at their best this postseason when they had little margin for error.

That's probably why they feel comfortable heading home for Game 5 of the Western Conference final against the Blues after a lackluster start led to a Game 4 loss in St. Louis.

Having squandered a series lead for the second time in this matchup, the Sharks know a loss Sunday could mean they won't get to play on home ice again this postseason.

''It's a great spot to be in,'' coach Peter DeBoer said Saturday. ''This is supposed to be hard. What happened with Boston on the other side, that usually doesn't happen. Usually these are all six, seven hard-fought games, hard-fought series. We're right where I expected we would be, in a good spot going home, and we've got to get the job done.''

After alternating wins in the first four games, the Sharks and Blues now have a best-of-three to decide who plays the Bruins in the Stanley Cup Final. Boston swept Carolina in the East and will have 10 days off before the start of the next round May 27.

Nothing has come easy for San Jose or St. Louis. The Blues went six games in the opening round against Winnipeg before needing double overtime in Game 7 of the second round against Dallas to make the conference final.

The Sharks, meanwhile, have endured two seven-game series - Vegas and Colorado. That's happened in part because they have appeared to let up when leading a series before responding with greater desperation.

San Jose is 0-6 this postseason when leading a series. But it is 10-2 when tied or trailing, including four wins in elimination games sparked by a comeback from 3-1 down in the opening round to the Golden Knights.

''There's a lot of emotion in the playoffs,'' Sharks captain Joe Pavelski said. ''We're in the conference finals. We've had overtime wins, we've had game sevens. We've had emotional games for sure. You just lace them back up next game and you compete.''

The Blues got a goal from Ivan Barbashev 35 seconds into Game 4 and added another late in the first period before hanging on for the 2-1 win Friday.

It was an impressive rebound from a crushing Game 3 loss when the Blues allowed the tying goal with 1:01 left in regulation and then the winner in overtime after the officials failed to see a hand pass by San Jose that set up Erik Karlsson's goal.

''We're in a good spot,'' coach Craig Berube said. ''So just pushing and keep fighting and be aggressive. Just be aggressive as a team and be confident as a team. That's our message. You're going to have ups and downs in the playoffs and you have to move on from it. You really do. As much as we had to move on from that Game 3 loss we have to move on from last night's win.''

The Sharks need to come out in Game 5 with the kind of play they showed in the final two periods Friday. They controlled the puck and hemmed the Blues into the defensive end for long stretches.

The only problem was St. Louis rookie goalie Jordan Binnington, who stopped all 11 shots in the second period and then nine of 10 in the third. He allowed only a power-play goal to Tomas Hertl on the way to his franchise-record 10th win this postseason.

Binnington improved to 11-2 this season in games following a loss.

''As soon as people start doubting him, he pulls another sick performance,'' Blues forward David Perron said.

Another big concern for the Sharks is the health of Karlsson, who played only one shift in the final 9:24 after an apparent injury. Karlsson missed 27 of the final 33 games in the regular season with groin injuries that have hampered him in the playoffs.

He's had big moments, with 14 assists and two goals, including the disputed overtime winner in Game 3 against the Blues. But he also seems to labor at times, as he did in the third period before taking an extended break when the Sharks were fighting for the tying goal.

He returned for the final 1:55 game with the goalie pulled but mostly stayed positioned at the point for passes and shots, his skating limited. DeBoer offered no update Saturday on Karlsson's condition.

The Blues will again be without defenseman Vince Dunn, who took a puck to the face in Game 3.

# 6 REFUSEING 30/1

My selection in this contest is HAMMERS VISION. Could provide positive gains based on very good recent speed figures with an average of 80. Pennington will most likely be able to get this gelding to break out early for this event. Ran a strong last race. SURFING U S A - Had one of the strongest speed figures of this group in his last race. Should be used in the exotic bets.

# 4 BIG DADDY DIRT BAG 2/1

# 5 MR BOO RADLEY 8/1

I think WASCALLYWITTLEWABBIT is a strong choice. Is a key contender - given the 79 speed figure from his most recent race. Could best this field here, showing respectable figs of late. This colt is a contender based on his earnings per start in longer quarter horse races. BIG DADDY DIRT BAG - Has been racing solidly and has among the strongest speed in the race for today's distance. Sedillo has him trained soundly to break sharply out of the gate. MR BOO RADLEY - With a formidable 58 average speed figure at the distance, seems well suited for today's contest. Must be in good form if the conditioner is bringing him back so quickly.

#1 DESERT FRONTIER (JPN) (ML=6/1)
#4 CAPTAIN REGAN (ML=3/5)

DESERT FRONTIER (JPN) - I predict an ideal trip. Stalk the leaders, and surge on the turn. The improved speed figs over the last 3 races is strong. Demczyk drops him in this clash fit and ready to go. CAPTAIN REGAN - This thoroughbred could be tough this time, especially since Oliveros rode last time around the track and now should be familiar with this one. When Oliveros and Clouston are put together on animals the ROI has been fantastic at +198. Ran in the last race against tougher competition at Mountaineer Park. The move down in class ranks should suit him well. Earnings per race is something that I feel can be a vital factor. This horse is ranked number 1 in this bunch. A repeat of that latest performance on May 4th where he recorded a rating of 72 looks lofty enough to triumph in this race.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 PIAZZA DEL CAMPO (ML=4/1), #2 DENUNCIATION (ML=5/1), #5 FARMER PHIL (ML=8/1),

PIAZZA DEL CAMPO - Hasn't been getting close at all lately. Earned a pedestrian speed rating last out in a $10,000 Claiming race on May 4th. Improbable to see an improved performance off of that number. DENUNCIATION - Don't feel this runner will make a winning move in today's event. That last speed figure was most unsatisfactory when compared with today's Equibase class figure. FARMER PHIL - 8/1 is just too low of a price to take on most any racer that has run poorly in back to back races. This gelding earned a rating in his last event which likely isn't good enough in today's event.

Prairie Meadows - Race #6 - Post: 3:17pm - Maiden Special - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $41,933 Class Rating: 75

Rating: Golden DollarGolden DollarGolden DollarGolden Dollar

#4 C J OMEGA (ML=8/1)
#3 LAUNCH LIGHT DREAM (ML=9/2)

C J OMEGA - This first timer has been getting primed in the morning at Prairie Meadows, a good sign. I have all the raw data you need right here. Dam stats for first timers, winners 50 percent of the time. LAUNCH LIGHT DREAM - I expect this mount to bewilder some fans today.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 RED WHITE AND LOUD (ML=2/1), #5 CHA CHA NOW Y'ALL (ML=4/1), #6 MR. SOLO (ML=5/1),

RED WHITE AND LOUD - This gelding notched a speed fig in his last race which probably isn't good enough today. CHA CHA NOW Y'ALL - Finished third in his most recent effort with a run-of-the-mill speed figure. When I look at today's class rating, it would take an improved performance to triumph after that in this group. MR. SOLO - Doesn't appear to be in a satisfactory spot today.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Have to go with #4 C J OMEGA on the win end if we get at least 9/5 odds
