This is a Free play on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The Bombers look to remain undefeated when they visit Hamilton this week. The Ticats are the second best team in the CFL, with just one loss on the back end of a home and home series versus Montreal. The Bombers lead the CFL in scoring defense, while the Ticats lead the league in scoring. The Ticats have padded their stats in blowout wins over Toronto and Montreal. Their last two games haven't been all that impressive, just barely beating Calgary at home, and losing on the road to Montreal. The divide between the talent in the Eastern and Western conference is as wide in the CLF as it has been in the NBA in recent years. Hottest team: Cardinals (8-2 last 10)

St. Louis has pulled into a first-place tie with Chicago atop the NL Central as the Cardinals have won 11 of 14 games since the All-Star break. The Redbirds lost their first game following the break to the Diamondbacks to slip to 44-45, but St. Louis has moved to 55-47 with the hot stretch, capped off by a four-game road sweep of the Pirates. The Cardinals have won all four series in the second half, but the next four opponents will be a major test for St. Louis as it faces the Astros, Cubs, Athletics, and Dodgers.

The lone interleague series this weekend takes place at Busch Stadium as the Cardinals welcome in the Astros in a matchup of former NL Central rivals. Houston has won seven its past eight games, but the Astros are 3-6 the last nine interleague contests. Jack Flaherty has allowed one run in each of his past three starts, but St. Louis owns a 1-5 record in his previous six outings, including an 0-3 mark at home.

Coldest team: Padres (3-9 last 12)

San Diego travels back home after a 3-6 road swing, punctuated by a 4-0 setback to the Mets on Thursday. The Padres were blanked for the first time since May 29, which also came in New York to the Yankees in a 7-0 defeat. The first half ended on a high note for the Padres, who won the final three games against the NL West-leading Dodgers on the road, but San Diego has dropped all four series since the All-Star break, including series losses to the Marlins and Mets.

The Padres return to Petco Park playing with revenge against the red-hot Giants as San Francisco pulled off a three-game sweep of San Diego in early July. Joey Lucchesi tries to get the Padres on track as the southpaw despite failing to win in his last two home starts. Lucchesi shut down the Giants at home back in late March, but lost in each of his two road matchups with San Francisco, while allowing 10 runs in 10 innings of those two defeats at Oracle Park.

Hottest pitcher: Dario Agrazal, Pirates (2-0, 2.25 ERA)

Pittsburgh has fallen apart of late by losing 11 of 13 games since the All-Star break, as the Pirates hit the road to face the Mets. The only consistent pitcher in the Pirates’ rotation of late is Agrazal, who has tossed six innings in each of his last four starts, while yielding five earned runs in this span. Pittsburgh had won three consecutive starts by Agrazal against Houston, Milwaukee, and St. Louis in the underdog role, but the Pirates dropped a 2-1 decision to the Phillies as a home favorite his last time out. The Mets have won consecutive home games only once since June 13, as New York is fresh off a shutout of San Diego.

Coldest pitcher: Sandy Alcantara, Marlins (4-9, 4.25 ERA)

The Miami right-hander tossed a gem at Philadelphia on June 21 as a +225 underdog in a 2-1 victory as he allowed one run in 7.2 innings of work. Since then, the Marlins have lost his past four starts, each coming by two runs or more. Alcantara was tagged for six runs in five innings of work in a 10-6 defeat at Los Angeles as a heavy underdog last Saturday, while the Marlins are riding an 0-5 skid in his past five home starts. Things don’t get easier for Alcantara as he opposes former Cy Young winner Zack Greinke and the Diamondbacks at home on Friday night.

Biggest OVER run: Twins (5-0 last five)

Minnesota’s offense remained on fire in Thursday’s blowout of Chicago as Nelson Cruz went deep three times in a 10-3 rout. The game easily went OVER the total of 8 ½, the first total for Minnesota that was not in double-digits since July 14 at Cleveland, a span of 10 games. The Twins have scored at least seven runs during each game of this stretch, while finally limiting an opponent to less than five runs for the first time in seven contests. Michael Pineda takes the mound for the Twins as the right-hander has seen the OVER hit in three of his last four starts, including in a 10-3 pounding of the White Sox back on June 29.

Biggest UNDER run: Phillies (9-3 last 12)

Philadelphia had high expectations placed on them before the season, but has not lived up to them yet. However, the Phillies have played better of late by winning seven of their past 10 games, while allowing two runs or fewer in four of the previous five contests. Granted, the offense hasn’t blown up in this span by scoring 10 runs in the last four games, but the Phillies grabbed road series wins against Pittsburgh and Detroit. The Phillies welcome in the division-leading Braves this weekend for a pivotal series as Jake Arrieta is coming off back-to-back starts in which he yielded one run apiece in wins over the Nationals and Pirates.

Matchup to watch: Cubs vs. Brewers

The NL Central race has tightened up between Chicago, St. Louis, and Milwaukee, who are separated by two games heading into the weekend. The Cubs visit Miller Park for the first time since early April as Chicago snapped a three-game skid in Wednesday’s 4-1 triumph at San Francisco. Chicago tries to end a dreadful 1-7 stretch in road series openers since late May, while seeking consecutive away victories for only the second time since May 1.

The Brewers also avoided a sweep in their last series by edging the Reds, 5-4 as heavy -160 favorites on Wednesday behind Yasmani Grandal’s two-run single in a three-run fifth inning to put Milwaukee up for good. Since a 2-8 slump in early July, the Crew has won six of their last nine games, but Milwaukee will be looking to improve on a 1-9 record in its past 10 home series openers.

Kyle Hendricks (7-8, 3.41 ERA) is winless in his past five starts for Chicago in spite of yielding two runs in each of his previous four outings. The latest defeat came as a -180 home favorite against the Padres last Sunday, but the blame doesn’t fall on Hendricks, who allowed four hits and two runs in seven innings of a 5-1 loss as the Cubs scored their only run in the first inning. Hendricks lost at Milwaukee on April 7 in a 4-2 setback as the right-hander tossed four innings and the Cubs couldn’t overcome an early 4-0 deficit.

The Brewers send out veteran southpaw Gio Gonzalez (2-1, 3.60 ERA), who is coming off his first start in nearly two months in an 8-3 victory at Arizona last Saturday. Gonzalez received a no-decision after pitching four innings as the Brewers rallied late for six runs to help Milwaukee to improve to 5-1 in his past six outings. The last time Gonzalez faced the Cubs at Wrigley Field on May 10, he posted 5.2 scoreless innings in a 7-0 shutout as a +115 underdog.

Betcha didn’t know: Andrew Cashner was money in the bank with the Orioles before getting dealt to the Red Sox in mid-July. The Orioles won six of his final seven starts, including four victories as an underdog of +150 or higher. Following the trade to Boston, Cashner flipped to a heavy favorite against Toronto and Baltimore and promptly lost to each of those squads, while allowing 10 runs. Cashner hasn’t had much luck with the Yankees as Boston and New York square off on Friday following the Red Sox rout of the Bronx Bombers, 19-3 on Thursday. The Orioles lost all three starts by Cashner against New York this season, while the righty last beat the Yankees as a +210 underdog in July 2018, but Baltimore picked up a walk-off win, 6-5.

Analysis

BC Lions (1-5) saw their woes continue, falling 38-25 on the road against Saskatchewan (2-3). The Lions are also a dismal 1-5 ATS, covering only in Calgary back in Week 3 as 10 1/2-point underdogs. As single-digit 'dogs, the Lions are 0-3 ATS and they also failed to cover their only pick 'em and only game as a favorite.

For the Roughriders, they picked up their eighth cover in the past 10 meetings with the Lions. The Lions are also 1-5 ATS across the past six road games, and they fell to 2-10 ATS in the past 12 against losing teams.

Calgary (3-2) failed to cover for the fourth time in five outings this season, but they were able to avoid the upset bug against lowly Toronto (0-5). The Argos picked up their second cover of the season, although they scored 17 or fewer points for the fourth time in five contests. The 'under' has connected in three of the past four for Toronto. The under is also a perfect 3-0 in the past three for the Stamps after the over hit in the first two outings.

Montreal (3-2) continues to trend in the right direction. After opening the season 0-2 SU/1-1 ATS, they have won and covered three in a row. Defense has been a major part of their turnaround, as they allowed 73 total points in the two losses, and an average of 19.3 PPG in their past three wins.

The win for the Alouettes came at the expense of Edmonton (3-2), who have now dropped two of the past three after opening 2-0 SU. The Esks are now 3-9 ATS in the past 12 during Week 6, for whatever reason. Montreal is also a perfect 8-0 ATS across their past eight games played on a Saturday, while going 8-1 ATS in the past nine against winning teams. The Esks also saw their five-game cover streak in Montreal snapped.

Winnipeg (5-0) had their most dominant showing to date, emasculating Ottawa (2-3) by a 31-1 score. The RedBlacks opened 2-0 SU/1-1 ATS, but they have now dropped three straight while failing to cover four in a row, including 0-2 SU/ATS against the Bombers. Ottawa has been outscored 60-15 in the two meetings so far.

Hamilton (4-1) returns in Week 7 after their bye, looking to improve upon their 4-1 ATS mark.

-- The Stampeders travel to Canada's capital city looking to keep the RedBlacks down. Calgary loves Week 7, as they're 8-0 ATS in their past seven during the week. The home teams swept Week 6 in the CFL straight-up while going 3-1 against the spread. The run started Thursday night with Calgary’s 26-16 victory at home against Toronto, but the Stampeders could not cover as heavy 13 ½-point favorites. On Friday night, Winnipeg stayed perfect of the year both SU and ATS with a 31-1 rout over Ottawa as 11 ½-point home favorites.

Saturday’s action started with Montreal pulling off its third-straight upset with a 20-10 victory against Edmonton closing as six-point underdogs at home. Later that night, Saskatchewan raced past British Columbia 38-25 as a six-point favorite in the first meeting in that home-and-home series.

Game Overview

The Blue Bombers continue to play extremely well on both sides of the ball. The offense is averaging 33.8 points per game complementing a defense that has only allowed a total of 80 points in its first five games. The total stayed UNDER 52 points against Ottawa and it has stayed UNDER in three of their last four contests.

Matt Nichols completed an impressive 86.2 percent of his 29 passing attempts on Friday night for 295 yards and two touchdowns. This included a franchise-high 19 completions in a row.

Hamilton is the class of the East Division behind the highest scoring offense in the CFL (37.4 PPG). Its defense has also played extremely well by holding opposing teams to an average of 20 points a game. Jeramiah Masoli has thrown for 1,517 yards and nine touchdowns in his first five games.

His top target Brandon Banks leads the CFL in receiving yards with 506 on 36 receptions. He has caught three balls for touchdowns. The Tiger-Cats are 3-0 SU and ATS at home this year with the total staying UNDER in all three games.

PRADO'S ENCORE - That recent bullet 35.0 work shows that this filly is ready for a top race today. RAGATAGTAG - She keeps getting closer at the finish with each and every start. When I handicap a race on the turf, I think sometimes class ratings are more important than speed figs. This magnificent animal has the highest average class in the entire group. (EPS) earnings per start is something that I believe can be an important handicapping aspect. This entrant is ranked at the top of the list in this bunch. KURINGAI - Boyce has this filly spotted in the ideal race.

DAME OF THRONES - This field is a whole lot tougher than the ones she met in the last event. Quite unimpressive speed figure last out at Arlington at 1 mile. Don't feel this runner will improve too much in today's race. MY JILLY - Just cannot play this questionable contender. Didn't show me anything positive last time out or on June 21st. Registered a somewhat easily forgotten speed figure last time out in a $12,500 Claiming race on July 4th. Not probable to see an improved performance off of that rating. COOLER SCHEDULE - This mount showed very little last time out of the box finishing sixth. No reason to expect any change in today's event. Can't really be sure that the latest rating of 75 is valid since it was garnered on the soft turf.

Contreras, the trainer, shows intent by adding Lasix right here. A positive sign.

I'll take my chances here with Philadelphia as a home dog against the Braves. Phillies have won 3 straight and 5 of 6 overall. Atlanta on the other hand has lost 6 of 8 and were just swept at home by the Royals. Braves getting love here with Mike Soroka on the mound, but he's got a 4.07 ERA and 1.641 WHIP in his last 3 starts and in his only start vs the Phillies (7/4), he gave up 4 runs on 9 hits in 4 2/3 innings. Phillies send out Jake Arrieta who is 5-2 with a 2.85 ERA and 1.183 WHIP in 8 career starts against the Braves. In his only start against Atlanta this year he allowed just 1 run on 6 innings. Arrieta has won 8 of his last 9 starts in July, while the Braves are 3-11 in their last 14 following an off day. Give me Philadelphia +120!

The Washington Nationals are coming off an 8-7 loss to Colorado on Thursday while the LA Dodgers had the day off to recover. The rest advantage is only one of the reasons why I think the Dodgers will prove well worth the price as a road favorite here at Nationals Park Friday night.
Additionally, the Dodgers will hand the ball to Hyun-Jin Ryu (11-2, 1.76 ERA) who has handcuffed the Nats throughout his career, boasting a 2-1 mark with a 1.35 ERA in four starts versus Washington. The Nats meanwhile turn to Anibal Sanchez (6-6, 3.80 ERA) who fell to 1-3 with a 3.89 ERA in eight career meetings with the Dodgers after surrendering three runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings when he faced them on May 10.
Washington has played exceptionally well home at Nationals Stadium lately winning 13 of its last 17 in front of the home town crowd, but note that the Dodgers are 6-1 in the last 7 meetings in Washington.

While one could make a case for a higher-scoring affair in part because of the bullpens, the Nationals are 15-4 UNDER this month and L.A. is 18-9 UNDER after two or more consecutive Under's this season. I'll go against the grain.

My free play is on the Arz D'backs at 7:10 ET. The 52-51 Arizona Diamondbacks are currently 3 1/2 games back of a wild card spot. Arizona did itself no favors by dropping FIVE of seven games against St Louis and Milwaukee coming out of the All Star break but did sweep Texas 2-0 in between those two series. Arizona opened this week by taking two of three from the MLB-worst Orioles (33-69) and now the D'backs get to spend the weekend in Miami for three games with the NL-worst Marlins. 38-62 Miami lost SEVEN of nine out of the break but got a pair of strong pitching performances in its last two contests to stop a four-game skid. The Marlinsw ere routed 9-1 in Monday's opener in Chicago against the White Sox but then won the final two games of the series 5-1 and 2-0. Zack Greinke (10-4, 2.93 ERA) will take the mound tonight for Arizona, opposed by Miami's Sandy Alcantara (4-9, 4.25 ERA). Greinke has pitched better than his record, as he owns an 0.95 WHIP and .225 BAA to go along with his sub-3.00 ERA. Since allowing seven ERs in his 2019 debut, he's held opponents to three ERs of less in 16 of 20 starts. Alcantara may be one of only two rookies with a complete game this season but he was fortunate to avoid his fourth loss in as many starts last Saturday in Los Angeles, after giving up six runs in five innings against the Dodgers (Miami would lose, 10-6). The 23-year-old owns a 7.15 ERA during a four-start winless streak in which he is 0-3 and the team, 0-4. The price is too steep for me to play Greinke as a "regular selection" but considering the Marlins are the NL's worst team and are 2-8 in Alcantara's home starts, it's worth a free play. Oh by the way, Greinke is 7-0 with a 3.19 in 12 appearances (11 starts / teams are 11-0!) versus the Marlins. Good luck...Larry

With 199 home runs on the season, the Twins (62-40) are leading the majors in dingers and are just a single homer away from crossing the 200 mark for the fifth time in franchise history. Minnesota hit five of those homers yesterday, setting a new MLB record with nine games of five home runs or more in a season.
That production doesn’t look likely to slow down tonight in Chicago when the Twins take on the struggling White Sox (45-55), especially considering the current form of Nelson Cruz. Over his past four games for the Twins, the 39-year-old has hit six dingers.
Even if Cruz doesn’t manage another homer this evening in Chicago, it’s likely a teammate will pick up the slack, as Cruz is just one of 10 Twins players with double-digit home runs.
Facing those kinds of numbers, anyone would give White Sox rookie starter Dylan Cease (1-2, 6.19 ERA) a pass for being a bit nervous. The right-hander gave up a grand slam his last time out, and will be counting on run support from a squad that’s only won a single game in their last seven against right-handed pitching.
The Twins will offer that right-handed pitching tonight in the form of Michael Pineda (6-5, 4.41 ERA).

Lance Lynn is 0-1 with a 9.65 ERA and 1.93 WHIP in two previous starts against the A’s this season. He gave up 8 earned runs in 3 1/3 innings at Oakland on April 23rd.
