AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE (AAC)

-- SMU kept their perfect season alive with a 45-21 win over Temple. Not only are the Mustangs 7-0 SU, they're 6-1 ATS with the 'over' cashing in each of their seven games. ... South Florida was roughed up by Navy, 35-3, as the Bulls slipped to 3-4 SU and 4-3 ATS. The Middies have quietly posted a 5-1 SU/ATS mark at the halfway point. ... Memphis tuned up a very good Tulane, 47-17, as Kenneth Gainwell became the first player to receive for 200 yards and rush for 100 yards in a single game since Troy Edwards (La. Tech) in 1997. The Tigers improved to 6-1 SU/5-2 ATS, and the 'over' has cashed in four straight. ... Cincinnati picked up a 24-13 win over Tulsa, improving to 6-1 SU/5-2 ATS. The 'under' has cashed in five of seven for the Bearcats.

ATLANTIC COAST CONFERENCE (ACC)

-- Georgia Tech pulled off one of the biggest stunners of the day at Miami-Florida, winning 28-21 in overtime. The Hurricanes have been so hard to figure out. They surprised Virginia last week, a Top 25 team, then lost to a team they were favored by 18 points. Miami is now 3-4 SU/ATS after opening in the Top 25 rankings. ... Miami will travel to Pittsburgh next week. The Panthers won at Syracuse by a 28-20 score for their fifth cover in the past six games, as they keep their Coastal Division hopes alive. The Panthers are a perfect 3-0 ATS on the road this season. ... Florida State slipped up at Wake Forest, falling 22-20, as the Seminoles just can't seem to get on track, and stay on track. The Seminoles are now 3-4 SU/2-4-1 ATS. Meanwhile, Wake recovered from last week's 62-59 loss at home to Louisville, moving to 6-1 SU/3-3-1 ATS. ... Speaking of the Cards, they were no match for Clemson, falling to the Tigers 45-10. After a 21-20 near-miss at UNC, the Tigers are 2-0 ATS, averaging 45.0 PPG, while the defense has yielded 14 or fewer points in six of seven.

BIG TEN

-- Illinois was the big story of the day, as they upended Wisconsin, 24-23 for the first signature win of the Lovie Smith era in Champaign. They won outright as 30.5-point underdogs at home, cashing at +2500 on the moneyline. It was the second-largest upset over the past 40 seasons, and largest since Northwestern beat Minnesota outright as a 32-point underdog in 1982. ... Speaking of Minnesota, there were no upset of the Gophers this week. They won 42-7 at Rutgers to improve to 7-0 SU. After opening the season 0-2-1 ATS, they have rattled off four straight covers, too. ... Michigan earned the cover at Penn State, but the Wolverines had a touchdown slip through a receiver's hands late which would have given them a chance to tie or go for two and win. The Nittany Lions are quietly 7-0 SU, but just 4-3 ATS. The 'over' result was the first since Sept. 7 after four straight 'under' results. ... Indiana picked up a 34-28 win over Maryland 34-28, in a result which was a small bad beat (see below).

BIG 12

-- The Kansas-Texas game wasn't supposed to be one of the better ones of the day, as the Longhorns were favored by 21. But it was a good ol' fashioned Texas shootout, with a total of 50 points in the fourth quarter alone. When the dust cleared, it was Texas winning 50-48 in a great game at DKR. The Jayhawks have covered back-to-back games against Oklahoma and Texas after starting out 1-4 ATS in the first five. ... Texas Tech was involved in another bad beat this week, and it was the total yet again. Iowa State won the game 34-24, going 3-0 SU and 2-0-1 ATS across the past three outings. ... As far as the Sooners were concerned, they waylaid West Virginia by a 52-14 score as the 'over' connected. The Sooners covered the largest spread of the day in college football. ... Baylor kept their record unblemished with a solid road win at Oklahoma State, 45-27. The Cowboys opened the fourth quarter with a touchdown, giving them a 27-24 lead, but the Bears stormed back with 21 unanswered points. The Bears are 7-0 SU, but just 4-3 ATS.

CONFERENCE USA

-- Western Kentucky started the season with a loss at home to FCS Central Arkansas, and it looked like it would be a lost season for the Hilltoppers. They have turned things around big time. WKU topped Charlotte 30-14 to improve to 4-0 SU/ATS in conference play. The 'under' is also a perfect 4-0 over the past four outings for WKU. ... Florida International scratched out a 32-17 win over UTEP, as the Miners managed a cover. FIU has won three straight, although they're just 2-5 ATS overall. The Miners are 0-5 SU against FBS opponents, but they have covered two of the past three. The 'under' is 3-0 in the past three for UTEP. ... Louisiana Tech fell at Texas to open the season, but they have won six in a row while covering four of the past five. ... UAB rolled to a 38-14 win over Old Dominion, 38-14. The Blazers have won and covered three in a row, and they are 5-1 ATS over the past six outings.

MID-AMERICAN (MAC)

-- Toledo was stunned last week, and this week they were short 'dogs at Ball State. The Cardinals rolled up a 52-14 win over the reeling Rockets, who suddenly find themselves 4-3 SU/3-4 ATS, and not feeling very good about their season after a hot start. ... Kent State fell 45-38 in a high-scoring affair at Ohio. The Golden Flashes are just 3-4 SU, but they're a solid 3-1 ATS across the past four, with KSU going 3-0 ATS inside the MAC. ... Miami-Ohio posted a straight-up win over Northern Illinois as short 'dogs, winning 27-24. The Redhawks are 3-4 SU/ATS overall, but they have going 3-0 SU at home, and 2-0 ATS in two games against FBS opponents while the 'over' is also 3-0 in their three home outings. ... Buffalo made it interesting, but they won and covered at Akron by a 21-0 count. The Zips slipped to 0-7 SU/ATS, while the Bulls are 3-4 SU, but a solid 3-1 ATS over the past four outings. ... Eastern Michigan surprised Western Michigan by a 34-27 count in Ypsilanti, winning outright as 8.5-point underdogs. The Eagles are now 4-3 SU, but this was their first cover since Sept. 14, an outright win at Illinois.

MOUNTAIN WEST

-- San Diego State scratched out a 27-17 road win over San Jose State, picking up their sixth win in seven tries, while covering for the third straight outing, and fifth in six contests. The Aztecs have been a favorite of total bettors, too, as the 'under' is 6-1 in seven games for SDSU. ... Nevada got waffled at Utah State, falling 36-10. The Aggies were able to cover the 21-point number, as USU is now 4-2 SU/ATS, including 3-0 SU/2-1 ATS in three MWC battles. ... Boise State had their hopes of a New Year's Day bowl game dented by BYU, falling 28-25 in Provo. The Broncos slipped to 6-1 SU, while going 4-2-1 ATS overall. The 'over' has hit in consecutive games for the first time this season for BSU. ... Air Force wasn't distracted in the Islands, winning 56-26 at Hawaii despite losing their starting quarterback, Donald Hammond, to a shoulder injury early on. The Falcons are now 5-2 SU/4-3 ATS, and the 'over' has cashed in four in a row for USAFA.

PAC-12

-- Oregon State surprised California, 21-17. The Beavers have covered five of the past six games overall. ... Arizona suffered a 41-14 road loss at USC, as the Wildcats slipped to 4-3 SU and just 2-4-1 ATS. The Trojans suffered all kinds of injuries, but depth was on display. USC is 4-3 SU/ATS, including 4-0 SU and 3-1 ATS in four games at home, while going 0-3 SU/1-2 ATS in three road games. They're on the road at Colorado next Friday. ... The Buffaloes were hammered by a 41-10 score at Washington State, as the Cougars finally got back on track. It was their first cover since Aug. 31 after an 0-5 ATS skid. ... Oregon picked up a 35-31 win at Washington, as the kept the conference's bleak playoff chances alive. The Ducks have won six in a row since falling to Auburn in a neutral-site battle on Aug. 31, and they're 3-1 ATS over the past four outings.

SOUTHEASTERN (SEC)

-- Alabama lost QB Tua Tagavailoa to a high-ankle sprain, and head coach Nick Saban said after the game that he expects Tua to miss "one to two weeks". That means QB Mac Jones will start against Arkansas next week, so watch that line carefully. The Crimson Tide won 35-13 over Tennessee even without Tua for a good chunk of the game. The Tide are now 7-0 SU, but just 3-4 ATS, and they have failed to cover consecutive games all season. ... LSU roughed up Mississippi State by a 36-13 count in Starkville, keeping their record unblemished and on a collision course with 'Bama on Nov. 2. The Tigers are 7-0 SU and 5-2 ATS. The Bulldogs are 0-3 SU/ATS over the past three outings. ... Texas A&M found a way to get it done at Mississippi, 24-17. The Aggies scored a late TD with 2:34 to go, making it 24-14. Lucky for A&M bettors, the Rebels elected to kick a field goal with :26 left to make it a one-possession game, and try for an onside kick. They didn't get it. ... Missouri was stunned at Vanderbilt, as the Commodores won outright as 21-point 'dogs (+1000 ML). It's the same Vandy team which was hammered by UNLV last week.

SUN BELT

-- Georgia State took care of Army 28-21, as the Panthers are now 5-2 SU and 4-1-2 ATS overall. That's one win away from bowl eligibility. Their only losses have been a blowout at Western Michigan, and a triple-overtime loss at Texas State. ... Appalachian State topped Louisiana-Monroe, 52-7, and their hopes of a New Year's Day bowl are alive and well, helped out by Boise's loss. The Mountaineers are now 6-0 SU and 5-1 ATS, covering four straight. ... If you had the 'under' in the Coastal Carolina-Georgia Southern game, condolensces. See below.

Bad Beats

-- With a total of 57 on the board, Iowa State held a 34-17 lead over Texas Tech with 1:30 to go. However, QB Jeff Duffey hit T.J. Vasher for a short touchdown pass to push the total 'over'. The Red Raiders were involved in a bad beat total for the second straight week, although this one wasn't nearly as raw as last week.

-- The Coastal Carolina-Ga. Southern game had a total of just 45. That looked super highin the fourth quarter, with Coastal trailing 10-7 midway through the final period. They booted a field goal to make it 10-10. The teams went to overtime, and suddenly the offensive spigot was turned on, as the teams exchanged touchdowns in both the first and second overtimes, to push the total over. Eventually it was GSU pulling out the 30-27 victory. You'll definitely be seeing this one on Scott Van Pelt's segment.

-- Indiana was up 31-28 with just under three minutes to go at Maryland. They kicked the field goal with 2:49 to go, serving up Terps side bettors a slight bad beat -- although really, it was just a backdoor cover.

-- With 2:27 to go, Auburn scored a meaningless touchdown in terms of the result. They were up 44-10 with 2:27 to go before scoring a touchdown to make it 51-10. If you were holding an 'under' (55) ticket, that was bad news.

-- In the Middle Tennessee-North Texas game, there were 53 points on the board with a total of 59.5 on the board. The Blue Raiders scored a touchdown to tie the game 30-30. Total bettors were wishing they went for two, and missed it. Eventually UNT kicked a field goal to win it 33-30 at the gun, crushing anyone who had a Blue Raiders ML ticket.

-- Over bettors in Charlotte-Western Kentucky looked to be in good shape with 44 points on the board through three quarters. They needed just four points, but received a scoreless fourth quarter instead.

4th Quarter Covers - Week 8
Joe Nelson

Glancing at the scoreboard won’t tell you the whole story in most games. Here are some of the games that went down to the wire relative to the spread in the fourth quarter last week in the eighth big weekend of the college football season in mid-October.

Each week there are several teams that cover despite not necessarily deserving it, as well as other teams that played much better than the final score shows.

Troy (-18) 37, South Alabama 13: This Wednesday Sun Belt game was a 10-10 tie just before halftime before Troy managed a pair of field goals in the final 68 seconds. The lead was just 10 through three quarters as the underdog was promising on a spread that trickled past the key number of 17 to 17½ and even a few closing lines hit 18. The game changed dramatically with a 29-yard interception return touchdown that suddenly put Troy up by exactly 17. South Alabama appeared in position to get a score to keep the underdog in position to cover in most scenarios but an intentional grounding call pushed the Jaguars out of scoring range on a fourth quarter drive and Troy burned more than eight minutes of clock and eventually added seven more to lead by 24. South Alabama would reach the Troy 36-yard-line in the final minutes looking to get back within 17 for a narrow cover but a fumble ended the threat.

UL-Lafayette (-5½) 37, Arkansas State 20: The spread on the road favorite dropped in the hours before kickoff Thursday night but Louisiana led by 14 at halftime. The Red Wolves added a third quarter field goal and an early fourth quarter touchdown to get within the number down by just four. The Ragin’ Cajuns responded with a nice kickoff return and added a touchdown five minutes later to lead by 10, actually missing on the PAT. Needing to go for it on fourth down near midfield Arkansas State fell short and gave Louisiana good field position and two plays later they hit the end zone for a 37-20 edge and for good measure got an interception to hold off a late scoring threat from Arkansas State.

Fresno State (-16½) 56, UNLV 27: Fresno State led by just eight late in the third quarter but a fumble return touchdown put the Bulldogs in range to cover the home favorite spread that fluctuated back and forth from extremes of -13½ up to -16½.The Bulldogs would then take over in the fourth quarter with three touchdowns in the span of fewer than three minutes of game clock thanks to more UNLV turnovers, with eventually a 5-0 edge in takeaways leading to the lopsided final margin for Fresno State.

Clemson (-24½) 45, Louisville 10: A touchdown just before halftime put Clemson up 17-3 after a tight first half. The highly ranked Tigers only added seven points in the third to lead by 17 but posted two quick touchdowns early in the fourth to pull away before the teams traded late scores. Clemson had two turnovers but also posted a 551-263 edge in yards.

Ohio (-9) 45, Kent State 31: This contest turned into a MAC shootout with a 24-24 tie at the half before the pace slowed with Kent State tying the game with 10 minutes to go at 31-31. Ohio would score two touchdowns in the span of just over three minutes late in the game to pull ahead by 14 but Kent State would get a late score to get back within the number with 31 seconds to go on a 3rd down play, after converting a 4th-and-7 on its own side of the 50 earlier in the drive, with a stop there ending the game and holding the favorite cover for the Bobcats.

Florida (-3½) 38, South Carolina 27: The Gamecocks looked poised for a second straight upset in the SEC East with a 20-17 lead into the fourth quarter. Florida scored to go up by four and the Gamecocks had a fumble on its next possession and then was stopped trying to convert a 4th-and-2 with the Gators responding with touchdowns, in both instances while getting away with potential penalties. The Gamecocks got back within 11 with about two minutes remaining and actually had the ball back across midfield in the final seconds but Florida escaped with an 11-point win despite an even contest that saw the Gamecocks post 33 more yards and a solid rushing edge but with the officials squarely in the spotlight.

Kansas State (+4½) 24, TCU 17: A blocked punt set-up an early Kansas State score and that proved to be the difference in this Big XII clash despite substantial production edges for TCU. Gary Patterson opted to punt in Kansas State territory several times in the game and his conservative game plan would bite in the end as Kansas State put together a 95-yard touchdown drive late in the game to break a 17-17 tie, a drive in which Kansas State more than doubled its rushing total for the game on one 61-yard scramble and wound up converting a big 4th down instead of a medium-range field goal try. TCU reached the Kansas State 36-yard line before a costly sack made the down-and-distance too much to overcome and Kansas State won despite a massive rushing deficit in a turnover free game.

Georgia Southern (-7) 30, Coastal Carolina 27: The box score doesn’t look like an overtime game but Coastal Carolina held Georgia Southern off the scoreboard in the second half and got a fourth quarter field goal to force extra time. After matching touchdowns Georgia Southern went first in overtime #2 and scored a touchdown in one play to give a glimmer of hope to those on the favorite spread commonly at -6½. It took a lengthy drive and a 4th down conversion but the Chanticleers were able to even up the score. In the third period they settled for three and Georgia Southern converted a big third down and got into the end zone on the next play.

Buffalo (-18) 21, Akron 0: To say offense was tough to come by would be quite the understatement in this MAC game as Buffalo scored a first quarter touchdown and then neither offense scored again with total yardage running at 254-196. Buffalo had two fumble return touchdowns including a fourth quarter recovery that was enough to get past the heavy road favorite spread.

Oregon (-2½) 35, Washington 31: These Pac-12 North powers provided another great game as Washington held a 31-21 lead late in the third quarter. Oregon connected for a touchdown as time expired on the third, still trailing by three as a slight road favorite with the spread coming down from -3 by kickoff. Washington was held to back-to-back 3-and-outs as a Ducks program not often known for defense has led on that side of the ball this season. That set-up a season-defining drive for Justin Herbert and the Ducks, going in front by four with five minutes to go. Washington was a serious threat late but a sack and a penalty pushed the Huskies to eventually face 3rd-and-23 and while they got a big chunk to make it a manageable 4th-and-3, Jacob Eason fell incomplete with Washington just outside of reasonable field goal range as Oregon escaped to keep the Pac-12 alive nationally while narrowly cashing the favorite tickets.

Minnesota (-29) 42, Rutgers 7: The Gophers are now the last team standing in the Big Ten West now with a 7-0 start with the past five wins coming primarily against backup quarterbacks. Rutgers wasn’t a threat to win this game but the heavy underdog cover was in play with only a 21-0 deficit heading into the fourth. Minnesota scored three times in fewer than three minutes in the fourth quarter including an interception return touchdown as a late Rutgers touchdown to eliminate the shutout wasn’t enough.

Utah (-16) 21, Arizona State 3: The Utes turned in a dominant defensive performance but covering a more than two touchdown spread requires points and Utah led just 14-3 through three quarters. A muffed punt with just over five minutes remaining handed the Utes the field position it needed and on first down Zack Moss rushed for a 32-yard score to slip past the number.

Louisiana Tech (+2½) 45, Southern Miss 30: The Golden Eagles led 27-17 late in the third quarter but Louisiana Tech went 90 yards in just over a minute to climb within three as a slight home underdog. The Bulldogs took over in the fourth quarter with back-to-back scores and added a late exclamation point with an interception return touchdown to create a misleading final result in Conference USA play.

Baylor (+6) 45, Oklahoma State 27: The Bears trailed by three in the fourth quarter of this game but scored 21 points in four minutes to storm past Oklahoma State in stunning fashion in Stillwater, moving to 4-0 in Big XII play.

Texas A&M (-6) 24, Mississippi 17: Ole Miss had a substantial yardage edge and a 14-10 third quarter lead but a 62-yard fumble return touchdown shifted the trajectory of the game putting the Aggies in front heading into the fourth quarter. Mississippi had a missed field goal and an interception on its next two possessions and on a short field Texas A&M added a fourth quarter touchdown to go up by 10. In the final minute the Rebels reached the red zone but opted to kick a field goal down two scores and did not come up with the on-side kick for a brutal narrow loss for anyone on the home underdog at +6 of +6½

Virginia Tech (+4) 43, North Carolina 41: North Carolina led early but the game was tied in the fourth quarter 24-24. Both teams traded touchdowns in the span of 40 seconds late in the fourth quarter before overtime was needed. Field goals were exchanged and then North Carolina went first in OT #2 getting seven to give the road favorite a great chance to escape. On 4th-and-3 the Hokies not only converted but got the tying score. The third and fourth overtimes featured four missed field goals and the new overtime rules went into place for the first time, trading two-point conversion attempts instead of full drives after the fourth session, effectively sealing the spread win for the underdog Hokies. Both teams failed in the conversions in OT #5. The Tar Heels came up empty again in the sixth session before the Hokies sealed the upset.

Penn State (-7½) 28, Michigan 21: A more fascinating statistical game will be tough to find as Penn State jumped out to a 21-0 lead halfway through the second quarter and then wound up held to 85 yards the rest of the game. Michigan drew within seven with a late third quarter score but Penn State would connect on one more big play that they needed with a 53-yard touchdown pass early in the final frame. Michigan answered quickly to get back within seven and within the underdog spread that was commonly +9 before falling back to +7½. Michigan’s defense got a 3-and-out, but the offense couldn’t convert reaching 1st-and-goal and eventually coming up short on 4th down at the 3-yard-line, despite posting a 417-283 total yardage edge and a 26-14 first down edge.

SMU at Houston
Joe Nelson

Thursday night college football returns with an American Athletic Conference West division battle between SMU and Houston.

SMU has been the surprise AAC leader so far while a Houston squad that has been among the most prominent teams since the conference’s origin in 2015 but has had setbacks on-and-off the field in 2019 as the spread on this game has swung four touchdowns from last season.

Venue: At TDECU Stadium in Houston, Texas
Time/TV: Thursday, October 24, 7:30 p.m. ET ESPN
Line: SMU -14½, Over/Under 65½
Last Meeting: 2018, at SMU (+14) 45, Houston 31

The AAC has produced an undefeated champion the past two seasons and while many felt that UCF’s reign could be threatened this season, most suggested that Memphis or Cincinnati would be the contenders that could move up to the top of the conference. SMU is the last undefeated team standing in the conference at 7-0 though there remains plenty of work to do for the Mustangs to even seal the West division title with a difficult November schedule ahead.

Sonny Dykes got his head coaching start at Louisiana Tech after being a long-time assistant at Texas Tech under Mike Leach and then at Arizona under Mike Stoops. He took over at California for four seasons with only one positive campaign and his start at SMU was a disaster, taking over for the Frisco Bowl in 2017 with a limited roster and coaching staff in a humiliating 51-10 result against the Louisiana Tech program he formerly coached. In 2018 the Mustangs were a competitive 5-7 squad that came up short in the final two games with a bowl bid on the line but SMU has already earned a postseason spot this season.

Shane Buechele has been a star quarterback for the Mustangs with the junior transferring after two plus seasons at Texas after ultimately losing the job to Sam Ehlinger. He has already thrown for more than 2,000 yards this season with 18 touchdowns while SMU also has more than 750 rushing yards from Xavier Jones. James Proche has been the team’s go-to receiver with 54 catches while Reggie Roberson has nearly 800 receiving yards on a staggering 18.9 yards per catch as the big-play threat.

The SMU defense lacks great numbers with at least 21 points allowed in all but one game this season but 37 points scored for the Mustangs in the season opener has been the low mark for the offense. The perfect start has come with a few close calls holding off a comeback bid at Arkansas State in August in seven-point win while also narrowly winning by three at TCU for a marquee result early in the season. SMU needed triple-overtime to beat Tulsa at home in early October with an incredible rally after trailing 30-9 to start the fourth quarter.

In addition to this road game, SMU is at Memphis next week while playing at Navy in late November while the home finale with Tulane could also be a dangerous game. Navy, Memphis, and Tulane each have just one conference loss and remain viable threats in the AAC West.

Houston is in a transition season with Dana Holgorsen taking over the program after modest success over eight seasons at West Virginia. Holgorsen was an assistant at Houston for two years in 2008 and 2009 and surprised many by jumping down to the smaller conference program after Major Applewhite was let go after two seasons. Houston gave Holgorsen a five-year deal worth $20 million as he is by a wide margin the highest paid Group of 5 head coach in the nation.

Houston quarterback D’Eriq King accounted for 50 touchdowns last season as Holgorsen was expected to inherit a quality team that would compete well right away. A tough September schedule led to a 1-3 start having to face Oklahoma and Washington State while losing the conference opener with Tulane in a wild finish. King opted to take advantage of the redshirt rules and sit out the rest of the season. Backup Clayton Tune played in several games last season but wound up injured in Houston’s loss to Cincinnati, his second game starting after taking over for King. That left Holgorsen’s son Logan to take over and despite modest production he did lead the Cougars past Connecticut last week, though by just seven points playing as a heavy favorite against one of the nation’s worst FBS teams.

Houston had only 284 yards of offense against Connecticut last week but was able to pull away with a 58-yard touchdown to break a 10-10 tie late in the third quarter. At 3-4 Holgorsen has little chance to match the marginal 8-5 campaign that got Applewhite fired last season and Houston might not be favored in any of the remaining games with a schedule that includes UCF and Memphis in the first two November tests. Tune seems to have a chance to return this week as he has been practicing at a limited level as he rehabs his hamstring. Houston also has injuries on the offensive line and linebacker corps while running back Patrick Carr is not expected to be ready to return this week.

Chances are these teams aren’t as far apart as the current records as Houston has faced a much more difficult schedule but it doesn’t appear likely that Houston’s roster will resemble the outfit that didn’t look out of place vs. quality power five teams early in the year. On a short week after last week’s convincing win over Temple this is a potentially dangerous game for SMU with Memphis next week however, a game that could ultimately decide the division title.

SMU put up 655 yards to 273 for Temple last week in a dominant showing against an Owls defense that beat Maryland, Georgia Tech, and Memphis as that will be a difficult performance for the Mustangs to match. SMU is now ranked 16th in the nation and will have a target on its back, particularly against a Houston squad that was upset by the Mustangs last season.

Last season:

A 3-5 SMU squad had played to overtime with Cincinnati the previous week before facing Houston at home, with the Cougars 7-1 on the season with at least 41 points scored in every single game. They didn’t reach that mark in this game as SMU jumped out to a 17-0 lead and led 31-14 at halftime after scoring a touchdown in the final seconds before the break, with one of Houston’s touchdowns coming on defense. The Cougars would close to within seven in the fourth quarter but mainly behind running behind Ke’Mon Freeman, SMU had a lengthy drive to put the game away inside of three minutes. SMU had a 514-365 edge in yardage with the main disparity in the passing game.

Historical Trends:

Houston is 18-10-1 S/U but just 14-14 ATS in this series since 1980 with SMU winning the past two home meetings but last winning in Houston in 2005. SMU is 1-4 ATS as a double-digit road favorite with two S/U losses going back to 1997, while only once being this big of a road favorite since 2012. Houston has covered in three of the past four games as a home underdog with two S/U wins going back to 2013, winning 36-10 vs. Louisville in 2016 in the last instance playing as this big of a home underdog.

A Little East Coast Swing

-- The Arizona Cardinals (+3.5, ML +165) kick the road and took care of the New York Giants by a 27-21 score, as rookie QB Kyler Murray outdueled fellow first-year QB Daniel Jones in the raindrops left over from the remnants of Tropical Storm Nestor. The Cardinals have now won and covered three in a row, and they're 3-3-1 SU and 5-2 ATS overall. The 'under' cashed for the second time in three trips to the Eastern Time Zone for the Cards, too. They make on final trip in Week 10 to the Eastern Time Zone, and that's after the clocks change, too, when they meet the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The San Francisco 49ers (-10) also headed east and were stuck in the muck and mire at FedEx Field in Landover, Md. against the Washington Redskins. In fact, this game was played on a natural grass surface, as opposed to the field turf at MetLife Stadium, so it was even more sloppy and muddy. The game featured no touchdowns on either side, and just three field goals by the 49ers, serving as yet another reminder to always double-check the weather before finalizing those wagers each week. The 49ers have been to the Eastern Time Zone three times in the first seven weeks, hitting the 'under' twice. They return one more time to the Eastern Time Zone in Week 13 when they battle the Baltimore Ravens.

Another west coast team visiting the Eastern Time Zone was the Los Angeles Rams against the Atlanta Falcons. Under the dome, the Rams and Falcons needn't worry about weather-related issues, but this game hit the 'under'. It was actually no fault of the Rams, as they racked up 37 points, but the Falcons lost QB Matt Ryan (ankle) to an injury in the second half, and they managed just 10 points to go well 'under' (54.5) the total. Like the other two NFC West teams above, the Rams have hit the 'under' twice in three trips East, with one more trip to meet the Pittsburgh Steelers on Week 10 after a bye.

Huge Shock

-- If you were holding a Los Angeles Chargers (+2) ticket you're probably still shaking your head. The Bolts worked it all the way down to the 1-yard line of the Tennessee Titans inside the final minute. A long play to RB Austin Ekeler was ruled down at the 1 after instant replay. Then, RB Melvin Gordon ran it in, only to be ruled down short of the goal by replay. He got another crack at it and fumbled short of the line, as the Titans held on for the 23-20 victory. At least the total wasn't also in play, too.

Total Recall

-- The highest total on the board was the Rams-Falcons (54.5) game, which went well under. The other four games on the board with totals of 48 or higher also went under, including the Cardinals-Giants (50) battle, the Kansas City Chiefs-Denver Broncos (49.5) game with a total of just 36 points, and the Baltimore Ravens-Seattle Seahawks (48.5) contest which had a total of 46 points.

The gift of the day was in the Jacksonville Jaguars-Cincinnati Bengals (44), as the Bengals were overmatched all day, but they kept fighting to the end for 'over' bettors. QB Andy Dalton scored a late rushing touchdown with :23 remaining, cutting the lead to 27-17, putting the total over by just a half-point at some shops, and an unfortunate push at others. In fact, if Scott Van Pelt includes NFL in bad beats this week on his ESPN segment, this game HAS to be on there. In fact, there were just 27 total points on the board until Jacksonville had a pick-six with 4:18 to go.

-- On the flip side, the lowest total on the board was the New Orleans Saints-Chicago Bears (37) game. This game was supposed to be a snoozefest, but the Saints nearly took care of the over themselves. For the most part this game was out of hand, although the Bears actually successfully covered an onside kick late, and nearly had a second one, making things interesting at the end. When the dust clear, there was a total of 61 points on the board, the third-highest total of points in any game on the schedule.

-- The 'under' went 2-0 in the first two primetime games of Week 7, with the Monday Night Football contest between the New England Patriots-New York Jets (43.5) still pending. The 'over' is just 5-16 (23.8%) during the 2019 primetime schedule, a stark change from previous seasons when the games under the lights were high-scoring affairs. The 'under' is a perfect 8-0 for Sunday Night Football this season, and 3-1 in the past four MNF outings.

Officially, the 'over' finished 26-25 (51.0%) in 51 games under the lights.

In 2017, the 'over' finished 25-23-1 (52.1%) in 49 primetime games.

In 2016, the 'over' in night games went (52.9%) through 51 games.

In 2015, the 'over' finished 20-28-1 (41.7%) in 49 primetime games.

In 2014, the 'over' went 33-17 (66.0%) in primetime games, and the 'over' was 28-22 (56.0%) in 2013.

Injury Report

-- Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes (kneecap) dislocated his kneecap and he is expected to miss at least a couple of weeks after exiting Thursday's game in Denver on a quarterback sneak. Enter QB Matt Moore for head coach Andy Reid, who has had success with backup quarterbacks before.

-- As mentioned, Matt Ryan (ankle) left Sunday's game and he is set to have an MRI on Monday to determine the severity.

-- Lions RB Kerryon Johnson (knee) exited early and he will have further testing to determine his availability for Week 8.

-- Vikings WR Adam Thielen (hamstring) left Sunday's game in Detroit due to a hamstring issue, and he will have a precautionary MRI. He feels optimistic he'll be ready for Thursday's game against the Redskins.

Looking Ahead

-- Vikings QB Kirk Cousins will face his former team, the Redskins, on Thursday night in a home battle at U.S. Bank Stadium. The Redskins are 2-5 ATS in their past seven appearances on a Thursday, while the Vikings are 4-1 ATS in their past five appearances on Thursday.

-- The Seahawks travel east to meet the Falcons, and they might be facing QB Matt Schaub if Ryan isn't ready to go. Unlike those teams mentioned above, Seattle has hit the 'over' twice in their two trips into the Eastern Time Zone already this season. Seattle has alternated non-covers and covers in their first seven games, going 3-4 ATS so far.

-- The winless Bengals and Rams will square off at Wembley Stadium in London in the third International Series game of the season. The favorite/undedog is 1-1 SU/ATS so far through the first two games in London, but the 'over' has cashed in each of the two England games. The last time the Bengals were in England they tied the Redskins 27-27 at Wembley Stadium on Oct. 30, 2016. The Rams lost at Twickenham Stadium in that same season a week earlier by a 17-10 count to the Giants. They're 1-2 SU/ATS in their three previous U.K. battles.

-- The Bills hit their first 'over' of the season in a win over the Dolphins in Week 7. The Bills and 49ers have the most 'under' results at 5-1. Buffalo hosts Philadelphia in Orchard Park on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET. Meanwhile, the Niners host the Panthers coming off a bye.

LAST WEEK

The Vikings (5-2 SU, 5-2 ATS) remain in second place in the NFC North behind the 6-1 Packers, but Minnesota is rolling of late by winning three consecutive games. The offense has woken up since Minnesota was limited to six points in a Week 4 loss at Chicago by scoring 28, 38, and 42 points the past three weeks. The Vikings followed up an 18-point home blowout of the Eagles by rallying past the Lions, 42-30 this past Sunday to cash as 2 ½-point road favorites.

This was a huge victory for Minnesota following an 0-2 start inside the division, as the Vikings have now played all three NFC North rivals on the road. The Vikings trailed twice by seven points in the opening half at Ford Field before grabbing a 21-14 advantage on an eight-yard touchdown run by Dalvin Cook, marking the six time in seven games that the former Florida State standout has reached the end zone.

Detroit evened the game before the half at 21-21, but the Vikings outscored the Lions in the second half, 21-9, including Cook’s second touchdown of the game and a pair of scoring tosses from Kirk Cousins. The Vikings’ quarterback finished with 337 yards and four touchdowns, as Cousins has thrown 10 touchdown passes during this three-game winning streak. Wide receiver Stefon Diggs has racked up over 300 yards the last two weeks, but was held of out the end zone after scoring three touchdowns against Philadelphia.

The Redskins (1-6 SU, 2-5 ATS) covered for the first time since a Week 1 loss at Philadelphia in last Sunday’s 9-0 home defeat to the undefeated 49ers. Washington cashed as 10-point favorites in a rainstorm at FedEx Field as the Redskins held the Niners out of the end zone. However, San Francisco managed three field goals and held Washington’s anemic offense to 154 yards and 10 first downs.

The Redskins’ offense has been limited to seven points or less three times in the past four games, with the lone exception coming in a 17-16 triumph over the winless Dolphins. The only positive for Washington the last two weeks is the defense allowing 25 points and two touchdowns, while veteran running back Adrian Peterson is coming off a 118-yard effort at Miami and 81 yards against a solid San Francisco defense.

Following last Sunday’s loss, the Redskins fell to 0-8 SU and 2-6 ATS in the past eight games at FedEx Field since edging the Cowboys in Week 7 of 2018. In the last 16 games overall, Washington owns a 3-13 record and it has scored 17, 16, and 16 points those victories.

HOME/ROAD SPLITS

The Vikings have stomped all three opponents that have invaded U.S. Bank Stadium this season with the margin of victory being 16, 20, and 18 points. Minnesota closed as 3 ½-point favorites against Atlanta in a 28-12 opening week rout, while laying 3 ½ against Philadelphia in a 38-20 Week 8 blowout. The largest number the Vikings have laid at home is 8 ½ in a Week 3 shellacking of the Raiders, 34-14, to improve to 6-2 in the past eight games in Minneapolis.

The Redskins put up 17 points in the first 20 minutes of the season opener against the Eagles. Washington squandered a 17-0 lead in a 32-27 defeat at Philadelphia, but grabbed the cover as 10-point underdogs thanks to a late touchdown with six seconds remaining. Since that 17-0 advantage, the Redskins have scored 20 points in the past 10 ½ quarters away from FedEx Field, including 'unders' against the Giants and Dolphins.

SERIES HISTORY

These teams didn’t meet in 2018, but hooked up seven of eight years from 2010-17. The Vikings outlasted the Redskins, 38-30 at FedEx Field back in 2017, as Cousins and Case Keenum started that game at quarterback – for the other team. Cousins threw for 327 yards for Washington, while Keenum tossed four touchdowns and racked up 304 yards in the win for Minnesota. Wide receiver Adam Thielen (who is out Thursday with a hamstring injury) put up 166 yards for the Vikings, marking his second-highest receiving yardage output in his career.

The last six meetings between these NFC squads have eclipsed the 'over', as the winning team has scored at least 29 points five times during this span. Washington is making its first trip to Minnesota since 2014, while the 16-point line on Thursday is the highest in this series since 1998 when the Vikings blew out the Redskins, 41-7 as 13 ½-point chalk on the way to an NFC Championship appearance.

TOTAL TALK

The total on this game opened at 40 ½ and has been pushed up to 42 as of Wednesday evening. Chris David offered up his thoughts on this week’s number and his lean.

He said, “If you’re looking at current form, this particular matchup could have you scratching your head. After watching the ‘over’ cash in each of the first three weeks of the season, the ‘under’ has gone 4-0 in the last four games for the Redskins and the Washington offense has only scored 27 points during this span, which includes last week’s 9-0 shutout loss at home to San Francisco.

Bettors riding Washington’s ‘under’ streak and Minnesota’s 2-1 ‘over’ run may be inclined to play team total wagers for this contest. Washington is hovering around 12 ½ points while Minnesota is listed at 28 ½.

David added, “Minnesota is a clear-cut bully and its 11-1 record in its last 12 games as a favorite is very impressive, plus they’ve posted a 9-1-1 ATS record during this span. The defense is a beast at home and the unit is only allowing 17.6 PPG this season, 15.6 PPG at home and they actually faced decent quarterbacks in Matt Ryan, Derek Carr and Carson Wentz. The club faces a familiar foe this week in Keenum and while some folks may buy that narrative, I don’t see it happening here. With back-to-back road games against the Chiefs and Cowboys on deck, I expect a clinical victory for Minnesota with the clock running early and often. My lean would be to the game ‘under’ and also the Redskins team total ‘under’ as well.”

For those keeping track, the ‘under’ has gone 4-3 on Thursday Night Football this season, which includes last week’s 30-6 outcome between Kansas City and Denver that went to the low side.

Washington hasn’t played in the midweek game since the 2017 season and the total went 1-1 in their games while the Redskins only managed to score 20 and 17 points. Minnesota played in one Thursday Night game in 2018 and the Vikings dropped a 38-31 decision at Los Angeles versus the Rams.

HANDICAPPER’S CORNER

The Vikings continue to own a strong home-field advantage at U.S. Bank Stadium, as NFL expert Joe Nelson checks in with their success under head coach Mike Zimmer, “His home record since taking over the Vikings is amazing at 32-13 SU and 32-12-1 ATS including going 21-7 S/U and 20-7-1 ATS since the team moved to U.S. Bank Stadium in 2016. The Vikings have only once in that time been this big of a home favorite, and that was last September’s shocking 27-6 loss to Buffalo playing as a 16.5-point favorite.”

From an offensive standpoint, these teams are on completely different ends of the spectrum, “Washington has been one of the league’s least productive offenses at 267 yards per game while 28th in the league in yards per play. Minnesota is 4th in the NFL in yards per rush and surprisingly 2nd in yards per pass attempt. Cousins passed Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes and Seattle’s Russell Wilson and is currently the top-rated passer in the NFL at this juncture while Keenum has been adequate in that measure, ranking 16th, surprisingly in-between New England’s Tom Brady and Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson,” Nelson notes.

Nelson also points out the strong record of Thursday night home favorites of 10 points or more are 19-0 SU and 15-4 ATS since 2005, which includes a 5-1 SU/ATS ledger the last five seasons. The Patriots pulled away from the Giants in Week 6 with a 35-14 drubbing as 17-point chalk, ending a five-week run of Thursday night underdogs winning and covering.

LINE MOVEMENT

In spite of Thielen sitting out this game for the Vikings, Minnesota has moved up from 15 ½-point favorites on Monday at the Westgate Superbook to 16-point chalk. The total sits at 42, which is the second-lowest total for Thursday night game this season behind the 38-spot in Week 3 between the Jaguars and Titans.

# 5 JERRYS PRIDENJOY 3/1

# 1 FREDONIAN 4/1

# 3 DESTINEDTOBEASTAR 10/1

JERRYS PRIDENJOY has a very strong shot to take this race. Has to be carefully examined against this group displaying very strong figures recently and an average speed rating of 77 under similar conditions. Recently Thornton has been sizzling which may give the edge to this gelding. With a very good 77 speed rating last time out, will clearly be a factor in this contest. FREDONIAN - The class fig of today's affair is much lower than his last contest. He has been running well and the Equibase Speed Figures are among the most competitive in this field. DESTINEDTOBEASTAR - He should have a good outing versus this softer field of horses. Garnered a strong speed figure in the most recent race. Can run another good one in this contest.

# 3 JETS FAST DASH 9/5

# 1 JESS A BOY 7/2

# 6 MIGHTY POCKET ROCKET 5/2

JETS FAST DASH looks very good to best this field. Hamilton should be able to get this gelding to break out quickly in this event. Posted a sound Equibase speed fig in the most recent race. Can run another good one in this affair. Is tough not to look at based on Equibase Speed Figures which have been quite good - 77 avg - of late. JESS A BOY - Is a solid contender based on figs put up lately under today's conditions. Players get an edge when playing this trainer in a short race. MIGHTY POCKET ROCKET - Earned a very good speed rating last time out. Exhibits the look of a profitable play, averaging a solid 77 speed fig which is one of the strongest in this group.

#4 HANGTIME (ML=8/1)
#8 BATTLE MIDWAY (ML=5/2)
#3 TINTO MESA (ML=10/1)

HANGTIME - The jockey and handler combination have a positive return on investment when they are put together. I am keen on that recent outing on October 10th at Penn National where he finished third. BATTLE MIDWAY - Racing at a similar level as last race on Sep 14th at Penn National. I think Graci has found a good spot for him, and I like his chances today. You'll be making money right and left by turning your betting money onto this jockey/conditioner combination. This gelding is utmost in earnings per start. Give the once over to this one in the saddling enclosure. TINTO MESA - Went a route in a $4,000 Claiming race at Penn National in the last race from an outside draw. Moving to the inside at a similar distance should benefit this gelding.

Vulnerable Contenders: #10 STONE CRAZY (ML=7/2), #7 SHIPTHEGRIP (ML=5/1), #9 HURRICANE BEAR (ML=6/1),

STONE CRAZY - In the last race this pony finished third. Doesn't look promising for his chances this time. This gelding registered a speed rating in his last event which likely isn't good enough in today's race. SHIPTHEGRIP - Pony ran a great speed rating last out, but that was on a track listed as good. The rating last time out doesn't fit very well in this race when I look at the Equibase class figure of today's race. Mark this thoroughbred as a possibly overvalued contestant. HURRICANE BEAR - Most unsatisfactory speed fig last time out at Penn National at 1 mile. Don't feel this mount will improve too much in today's event.

http://www.trackmaster.com/images/tophat.jpgGUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - BATTLE MIDWAY - This gelding's superior last speed number of 74, against these thoroughbreds, makes him the overwhelming choice.

#1 VICTORY BOULEVARD (ML=9/5)

VICTORY BOULEVARD - This first timer has been getting primed in the morning at Belmont Park, a good sign. I know the barn is serious today. The gelding gets Lasix for the 1st time.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 JAMFLOWMAN (ML=5/2), #3 MR. SHORTANDSIMPLE (ML=7/2), #4 HEWHOMUSTNOTBNAMED (ML=8/1),

JAMFLOWMAN - Didn't look so great last time out. Probably won't make a winning move in today's event. MR. SHORTANDSIMPLE - I find it hard to wager on any horse in a sprint event at 7/2 when he hasn't shown any competitive efforts in sprints in the last sixty days. HEWHOMUSTNOTBNAMED - If he goes off close to the morning line of 8/1, I'll have to pass.

NBA (527) ATLANTA HAWKS VS (528) DETROIT PISTONS

Take: (528) DETROIT PISTONS

Reason: Jim Feist here with your free play for Thursday, October 24, 2019. Tonight I'm looking at the NBA contest between the Atlanta Hawks and the Detroit Pistons. The Hawks open their season tonight at Detroit, while the Pistons won their opener at Indiana, 119-110 as a 7-point dog. The Pistons hit a very nice 52.6 percent from the field and an equally impressive 45.8% from beyond the 3-point arc. The Pistons will try to keep that winning going here tonight against the Hawks. Early in the season it's tough to gauge these teams yet and what they are really about. But I liked the Pistons performance on the road in their first game. I'll take Detroit here tonight against the Hawks who play their opener.

While Houston is on its third QB of the season and trying to find some offense, with the coaches son.
SMU is better than everyone has thought but this line is a little high.

Houston will keep this one close as its a major rivalry game and they have played a tough schedule so far.

My free play for tonight is on the Nashville Predators on the puck line, as they're going to take advantage of the Minnesota Wild, who will be without goaltender Devan Dubnyk.

Dubnyk was injured Tuesday in the 3-0 win over the Edmonton Oilers at Xcel Energy Center after a collision with winger Ryan Donato. He remained in the Twin Cities while the team traveled to Nashville.

Alex Stalock will start against the Predators tonight, with Kaapo Kahkonen serving as backup after the team recalled him from the minors yesterday on an emergency basis. The Wild also shifted winger Kevin Fiala (lower-body injury) to injured reserve yesterday, while winger Jordan Greenway was also injured Tuesday, leaving the game after he was blasted by Edmonton’s Josh Archibald. Greenway accompanied the team to Nashville but won’t play tonight after waking up feeling sick.

This is a banged up Wild team right now, which means the physical, fast-paced, and very talented Predators should be able to skate circles around Minnesota in front of a raucous crowd at Bridgestone.

Lay the puck line, as Pekka Rinne will be fantastic in goal for Nashville, which snapped a two-game skid with a 6-1 win over the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday. Nashville has 12 healthy forwards on the roster, with only Filip Forsberg listed day-to-day with a lower-body injury.

No worries, though. Preds roll.

Detroit got their feet wet last night with a solid 119-110 road win at Indiana, but they will be back on the hardwood again tonight for their home season opener against an Atlanta team that did not play last night and should be raring to open their second season under coach Lloyd Pierce.

The Hawks are building through the draft, and this season rookies De'Andre Hunter and Cam Reddish will join Trae Young, John Collins and Kevin Huerter as the youth movement continues for Atlanta. They also added Evan Turner to give some depth to the guard position, and Jabari Parker was also signed as a free agent in the off-season.

The Pistons will once again be without Blake Griffin who missed last night's victory and will be sidelined for roughly the first 5 games with lingering knee and hamstring issues. It was the Andre Drummond show last night with 32 points and 23 rebounds! Aged Derrick Rose also was huge with 18 points and 9 assists in the victory. My question is, can they and the rest of the team do it again on this quick turnaround?

Drummond did play a career-high 41 minutes last night, and I expect he will be a little tired in the second half of this tilt tonight. Likewise Rose, and the rest of the Detroit team.

Last year the road team won all 3 meetings in this series, with the Hawks covering in the last pair of showdowns. I like the road trend to continue with the rested Hawks taking down the unrested Pistons.

The fact that the Minnesota offense has kicked things into high gear - 36 points per game over their last 3 contests - means that this contest is going to come awfully close to landing Over the total. The fact that Washington has scored just over 8 points per game for their last 5 contests tells me that this game should fall just shy of the total the oddsmakers have established for this Thursday night Week 8 lid-lifter.

Washington has played Under the total in each of their last 4 games this year, while Minnesota - even with their latest eruptions - have held Under the posted price in 4 of their 7 thus far this season, and are on an overall run of 11-5 Under the total since the middle of last season.

Case Keenum and Adrian Peterson are former Vikings who will be making their return to the Land of 10,000 Lakes, but Peterson is gimping around this week with ankle sprains, and Keenum just does not have the weapons need for me to think that the Redskins can help in pushing the points into the Over column.

Kirk Cousins of course is the former Washington QB who was lured by the big contract out of town, and while the plays that have been getting called are working like a charm right now, the Vikings will be missing one of Cousins' main targets in Adam Theilen who will sit this one out with a bad hamstring.

Like I said, this one is going to be right there straddling that Over/Under number, but in the end I think this one falls one or two points just south of the Over.

Redskins-Vikings Under.
