As for the Red Wings, they'll be desperate to open a three-game homestand with a win after suffering six straight setbacks. They've had road heavy schedule during that stretch though and will enter this contest on a day of rest since taking a 5-2 loss in Ottawa on Wednesday.

World Series Game 3

Houston Astros at Washington Nationals

The 2019 World Series has been full of surprises across the board through two games, as the great pitching matchups everyone expected to see has resulted in 24 total runs being scored in 18 innings of play. It's been the heavily underdogged Washington Nationals who came out on the right end of both of those results, now heading home to the nation's capital for three games and a chance to clinch the organization's first ever World Series crown.

Admittedly, I'm on the wrong side of this 2-0 series lead, as most of my pre-series bets look like nothing more then good fire-starting kindle at this point. But the Astros are far from dead though, as this team still heads to Washington with a 49-37 SU record away from home this year, and most of this core was there when the Astros won Game 7 on the road of the 2017 World Series. We haven't quite reached that true “must-win” stage yet with Houston, but going down 0-3 with two more games still to go in Washington will have Houston's backs pinned against the wall and struggling to kick out.

This is why Houston went out and got a form of insurance in bringing Zack Greinke to the team, and the Astros are hoping that a guy who's spent plenty of time in National League parks in recent years will help them get back on track in this World Series with a win in a NL park. Even down 0-2 in the series, Houston still comes into Game 3 as the 'chalk', and Greinke on the hill has a lot to do with it.

So will Greinke be the guy that helps get this thing turned around, or will the underdog Nationals continue to cash and grab a stranglehold on this World Series?

Game 3 MLB Betting Odds

Houston (-125) vs Washington (+115); Total set at 8

I'll begin with discussing the side here as it really is one that probably deserves to be held off on for the most part. There are just too many narratives and scenarios that bleed into the handicapping process here to really have a true handicap of the game. I mean, you can say stuff like “Houston isn't going to lose three in a row,” or “How is Washington still an underdog now that they are at home.”

Eventually, if you are betting this side, you'll use one of those types of narratives as support for your selection, and it's as simple as that. That's not something I prefer to get into all that often, and if that's what you're looking for I'm sure you'll find plenty of it over the next 48 hours from mainstream media outlets and others out there in this industry.

Instead, I'm looking at this total, and in a series that's been full of surprises in terms of results on both the side and total, I do believe we see that pattern hold true again for Game 3.

Early action on this total for Game 3 has seen nothing but 'over' action really, as the number opened up at 7 for a short while before getting to 7.5 with plenty of juice, and now flat 8's are popping up. That's such a reactionary move based on how the first two games have gone, and the more you are reactive and not proactive in your handicapping, chances are you'll be left paying the oddsmaker more times then not.

There is no argument from me that a pitching matchup of Greinke vs Anibal Sanchez looks much worse on paper than what we saw for Games 1 and 2, and simple reasoning would suggest that if the first two games easily cashed 'over' tickets, Game 3 has to as well right? The Nats have gotten offensive contributions from everyone in their lineup through the first 18 innings, and Houston's bats aren't exactly chopped liver either right. Yet, the key word I mentioned there is “simple” and you've always got to do as much digging as possible to find long-term success with your handicapping methods.

For one, the venue change brings a couple of significant changes. Obviously the biggest one is that there is no DH for either side here, and the “automatic” out that comes with the pitcher's spot batting for the first 5+ innings isn't exactly conducive to 'over' plays. Yes, I know Greinke is actually one of the better hitting pitchers in the game, and the use of “automatic” may be a little harsh, but the point remains the same. But that's just the first layer of the iceberg, as NL parks have not been kind to 'over' plays all year long when the Astros have been involved.

During the regular season, Houston went 2- 8 O/U as visitors in a National League park, averaging just 7.7 total runs scored per game. Yes, that average run number might be a little too close for some to pull the trigger on the 'under', but it includes a two-game set at Coors Field where one of the games finished with 17 total runs. You take out both of those Coors Field appearances (the other game finished with 6 total runs), and that average runs scored number drops to 6.75 runs per game which looks a whole lot better. Let's remember too, all of those games came in much more favorable conditions for baseball back in the summer, not being outdoors in Washington in cold, late-October evening weather.

And while the Astros did have Cole or Verlander pitching in a few of those NL ballpark games – which would help support an 'under' result – is Greinke really a huge step back in terms of talent level from those guys? I wouldn't say so as his career resume stacks up quite well with both of them, and I do expect him to be at or near his best for this critical game from Houston's perspective.

Furthermore, it was back in mid-June that Greinke – then a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks – came into Nationals Park and blanked Washington in a 5-0 win that saw him finish with a stat line of 7.1 IP and just two hits allowed on 75 pitches. His last seven career starts against the Nats – going back to 2013 – have all cashed 'under' tickets, and four of them have come at this ballpark specifically. Not one of those games finished with more than 5 total runs scored, and Greinke's teams came away with three shutout victories in his most recent four starts against Washington. Sometimes guys just like the way a particular mound or stadium looks and feels, and history suggests that may be the case with Greinke in, and against Washington.

Now, Anibal Sanchez on the other side does bring a few more concerns in terms of backing the 'under', as he's not always the most consistent guy out there, but his start in the NLCS was something special and hopefully he can recapture most of that performance a few weeks later here.

Houston's bats are nowhere near warm from a full lineup perspective in the playoffs right now, and given their lack of run production visiting NL ballparks this year – 3.625 runs scored per game at NL parks not named Coors Field – I'm not sure how you can rely on them to be successful in carrying their own weight in terms of an 'over' play.

The pitching duel that everyone expected in Game 1, and a little less so in Game 2, ends up showing up in Game 3 when the majority of the market has moved on from that line of thought. Colder, outdoor baseball with no DH already lends itself that way, and the more this total climbs, the more units I'll have on the low side of this number.

After Friday nights in September were often highlighted by Pac-12 action, this week the conference gets to stand alone in the spotlight as the USC Trojans travel to Colorado to take on a beleaguered Buffaloes team that hopes a return to home soil will return the fight in the squad. Colorado's been outscored 86-10 in their last two games – road losses to Oregon and Washington State – and are catching double digits for the third straight week with USC in town.

There weren't many positives to take from those two defeats if you're Colorado, but the good news is that at home this year they own a 2-2 SU record with the two defeats coming either in OT or by just five points. That suggests that they may actually be able to hang around with this USC team on Friday night – especially if the home field support can be loud, boisterous and prove to be a factor.

The question you've got to ask yourself when breaking down this game is if that indeed will be the case for Colorado in this spot, as situationally there are a few things working in their favor. That number is quite hefty for a Trojans team to cover away from home when it comes down to it.

So after last week's best bets split the board, let's dive into this contest to see if we can find a winner for another edition of “Pac-12 After Dark.”

From a USC perspective, it's hard to look much better then they did last week in their thorough beating of Arizona (41-14) to easily cover the 10 points they were giving up. The final box score in terms of yardage numbers may not suggest the game was as big of a blowout as the final score does – thanks to numerous turnovers from Arizona – but the game was never in question after the first half was finished, and it was a nice way for the Trojans to bounce back after tough losses to Washington and Notre Dame prior.

Yet, it's extremely hard to look that good two weeks in a row if you are the Trojans, especially when you are out on the road again where you are 0-3 SU and 1-2 ATS this year. Road struggles can be the norm when you've got talented young guy(s) starting at QB, and until the Trojans prove they can go out and be as successful as they are at home, laying this kind of chalk is hard to stomach. And that's before we even get into the potential look-ahead angle that the Trojans could be facing here with a home game against Oregon – the highest ranked Pac-12 team – on deck.

Passing on laying the chalk with USC doesn't necessarily mean I'm grabbing the points with Colorado here either.

Sure, Colorado's got the benefit of being at home where they've played much better football all year, could catch a napping USC team looking past them and the like. But the Buffaloes have given up at least 30 points in all seven of their games this year, and that number has risen to 40+ the past two weeks. Even with a double digit underdog, you do want to have some inkling that they could potentially win the game outright, and giving up 30+ every week definitely makes that hard. Situationally, it does make sense to take the points with Colorado, but passing on the side is ultimately where I fall.

Instead, it's that idea that you can pencil in 30+ points for a Colorado opponent that I'm looking to take advantage of with the total, as it's not like USC isn't capable of doing that as it is. USC averages 30.7 points per game on the year already, and barring numerous turnovers themselves, should be able to be the third straight Colorado opponent to at least threaten that 40-point number.

At the same time, USC on the road has given up 30, 28, and 30 points in their three losses, so we should expect Colorado's offense to find success as well. The Buffaloes are a better team at home in the sense that the offense does move the ball, scoring 52, 34, 23, and 30 points in their four home games already this year. That's good for an average of 34.75 points per home game, and while the Trojans are the best team they've faced in this spot, asking them to put up 25+ isn't unreasonable either. I mean, all we've got to see in that case is both teams play to their averages based on the setting – USC on the road, Colorado at home – and this number should get surpassed.

USC's 0-5 O/U run isn't going to last forever, and neither is the 0-2 O/U run for Colorado given that their opponents did all that they were supposed to for 'over' bettors in those two performances. The Buffaloes are 3-1 O/U at home this year as it is, and two of the three 'unders' USC has cashed away from home were a simple FG away from having a different result.

This is a game where those things should find a way to happen, as it was just two years ago that we had a near identical side and total for USC's last trip to Colorado. That game saw the Trojans close as -14 road favorites with a total of 61.5, and the 38-24 final score came about with the two teams combining for more than 1000 yards of total offense. That kind of yardage should be put up again in this year's meeting, as 62 or more points is going to be the final result here.

Heading into the stretch run of the CFL regular season, Friday’s betting action started with Montreal squeezing past Toronto 27-24 closing as a heavy 10 ½-point home favorite. Later that night, Saskatchewan kept its West Division title hopes alive with a 27-19 road victory against British Columbia as a 7 ½-point favorite.

The two Saturday games in Week 19 saw Hamilton roll over Ottawa 33-12 to cover as a heavy 17-point home favorite ahead of Calgary’s crucial 37-33 home victory against Winnipeg as a 6 ½-point favorite.

Game Overview

Calgary comes into the backend of this West Division home-and-home series tied with Saskatchewan for first place in the standings. The Stampeders have won six of their last seven games straight-up with a costly 2-4-1 record against the spread over the same span. Reggie Begelton helped pace Saturday’s win with three catches for touchdowns as part of four receptions on the day for 62 yards. Josh Huff caught six balls for 121 yards as part of Bo Levi Mitchell’s 337 passing yards in that game.

The loss has Winnipeg eying the third playoff seed in the West with a game and a half lead over Edmonton. The Blue Bombers are limping down the stretch with just two SU wins over their last seven games. They are 6-3 ATS in their last nine contests with the total going OVER in three of their last five games. They are 6-2 ATS this season playing at home. Chris Streveler threw for just 134 yards in Saturday’s loss but he was the team’s leading rusher with 85 yards on 15 carries. Justin Medlock did go 4-for-4 kicking field goals.

I think ONE LUCKY CORONA is a quite good choice. Will most likely go to the lead and might never look back. Displays the look of a money-making play, averaging a solid 66 speed figure which is one of the best in this group of horses in this race. She has quite good class ratings, averaging 78, and has to be considered in here. ZOOMADOR - Has been racing quite well and has among the strongest speed in the race for today's distance. Has very good Equibase Speed Figures and has to be considered for a wager in this race. IM HERE TO PARTY - Could best this group based on the Equibase Speed Figure - 70 - of his last contest. Don't overlook this gelding in your wagers - very dangerous with Garcia aboard.

MERLINS MUSE - In this race here, this beautiful animal has registered the highest Equibase speed figure at the distance, so I have to give her the edge. This filly is in fine form. Ended up second on Sep 28th. Came home fast in the last race at Belmont Park. That type of move bodes well for her chances in today's race. THEATERINTHEROUND - This mare is in top condition right now. Ran third last time out and comes back soon. Handal is solid in grass sprints. This equine should have no justifications if she doesn't win. Last time around the track, ran the last quarter in less than 25 ticks. That's a good sign she can close well, and should be right there at the wire this time. LOVELY LA LA - I seem to always make money betting Brown horses on the turf. That barn has a strong win percent for this distance/surface. I like to play this handicapping theory, a pony coming back off a solid effort within the last month or so. I think the shorter distance will help this filly stay the distance. Last out on the sod, this equine was strong. Anything close in this race, and this one should win. Last time around the track, ran the last quarter in less than 25 ticks. A good sign she can close well, and should be right there at the wire in today's contest. Look at this pattern of improvement. 82/88/95 are the last 3 speed ratings. NEWPORT BREEZE - This race horse is racing on the turf for the first time. She should be tough, coming off a third place finish in her race on June 7th on a sluggish track. This equine didn't run well on a sloppy track in her last race around the track at Saratoga. You probably want to overlook that showing. SADIE LADY - I certainly see favorable signs for this racer right here.

WADADLI PRINCESS - The extended rest time will probably be too much for this horse. SUNSHINE GAL - The pace scenario just isn't too promising for this early speedster.
