Thursday NHL Free play. My selection is on Columbus over Los Angeles at 7:05 pm et on Thursday.
The Blue Jackets have suddenly turned things around as they've collected at least a point in five straight games, including back-to-back wins over the Capitals and Red Wings this week, outscoring them by a combined 8-3 margin. Now they draw another winnable matchup with a Kings squad that is a prime letdown spot off a come-from-behind overtime win in Boston two nights ago. Like the Blue Jackets, the Kings have also collected at least a point in five straight games, and have also reeled off consecutive victories heading into this one. I'm just not sure their success is sustainable. They were actually outshot by a wide 40-27 margin in Boston on Tuesday. Jonathan Quick is expected to start between the pipes again on Thursday and he will be playing his fifth game in the last 10 nights, facing a whopping 134 shots in his last four contests. Take Columbus (8*).

The Coyotes are going to be hungry for this one, as the Wild have beaten them twice already this season. They're 13-8 (+4.9) in the revenge role. The Wild are tough to beat at Minnesota but not so much on the road. In fact, they're 9-1-3 in Minnesota but 7-13-3 on the road. Knowing this is their final home game before Christmas, look for the motivated Coyotes to take this one. Consider Arizona.

Bad Beat - Part 1

-- The Philadelphia Eagles (-6.5) took on the Washington Redskins at FedEx Field, and the game started off harmlessly enough. The Redskins were leading 14-10 at halftime on their home field, looking to spoil the NFC East Division title and playoff dreams of their rivals. The Eagles struck for a touchdown in the third to re-take the lead 17-14. That's when the craziness started.

RB Adrian Peterson scored just seven seconds into the fourth to make it 21-17, and the teams traded touchdowns with TE Zach Ertz going to six to re-take the lead. The Redskins booted a pair of field goals to take a 27-24 lead, and that's how it looked like it might end. At the very least, the Redskins were going to hang on for the home cover. WR Greg Ward Jr. scored with :26 left to make it 31-27, and the Eagles were on their way to a win. However, the scoring wasn't over, as any Redskins side bettor already knows all too well. QB Dwayne Haskins fumbled, and with zeroes left on the clock it was LB Nigel Bradham returning the fumble for 47 yards to make it 37-27.

Bad Beat - Part 2

-- If you had the 'under' (50) in Atlanta Falcons-San Francisco 49ers, my condolences. At 5:15 to go in regulation there were just 36 total points on the board when the Falcons scored a rushing touchdown to cut the lead to 19-17. The 49ers booted a field goal at 1:48 to make it 22-17 in favor of the Niners.

With :02 left, the Falcons scored a touchdown, as QB Matt Ryan hit WR Julio Jones on a 5-yard connection to make it 23-22. Under bettors loved that they didn't even risk a two-point conversion or extra point, should the 49ers block a kick or return a fumble or interception for two points. So game over, right? Well, the 49ers tried a crazy series of lateral that went backwards, and you knew how this one was going. The 49ers chunked it, the Falcons scooped it up at the goal line and cashed in the six to push it over with zeroes on the clock. Two absolutely atrocious beats on the day. -- There were five games with a total of 48.5 or greater -- Los Angeles Rams-Dallas Cowboys (48.5), Seattle Seahawks-Carolina Panthers (49), Cleveland Browns-Arizona Cardinals (49), Falcons-49ers (49.5 - see above) and the Houston Texans-Tennessee Titans (50.5). All but the Texans-Titans game ended up going over, and the AFC South battle probably would have gone over, too, if not for a scoreless first quarter. It was close.

The 'over' connected in the final Thursday game of the 2019 season between the New York Jets-Baltimore Ravens (44), with the over/under going 7-7 in the TNF game for the season. The Sunday nighter between the Buffalo Bills-Pittsburgh Steelers (37) was the lowest total on the board, and still wasn't even close to going over. We have the Monday nighter between the Indianapolis Colts-New Orleans Saints (46.5) still pending. The 'over' is just 17-28 (37.8%) during the 2019 primetime schedule, a stark change from previous seasons when the games under the lights were high-scoring affairs.

Officially, the 'over' finished 26-25 (51.0%) in 51 games under the lights.

In 2017, the 'over' finished 25-23-1 (52.1%) in 49 primetime games.

In 2016, the 'over' in night games went (52.9%) through 51 games.

In 2015, the 'over' finished 20-28-1 (41.7%) in 49 primetime games.

In 2014, the 'over' went 33-17 (66.0%) in primetime games, and the 'over' was 28-22 (56.0%) in 2013.

Looking Ahead - Division Matchups

-- The Bills and Patriots battle at 4:30 p.m. ET on Saturday. Buffalo is 7-0-1 ATS in the past eight games on the road, and 5-0-1 ATS in the past six as a road underdog. The Patriots are 42-19-3 ATS in their past 63 at Gillette, and 4-0 ATS in the past four appearance on a Saturday. In this series the road team is 20-8-1 ATS in the past 29 meetings, with the Bills 3-1-1 ATS in the past five trips to Foxboro.

-- The Rams and 49ers tangle, and San Francisco looks to recover after their shocking loss to Atlanta dropped them from a first-round bye in the playoffs into a wild-card position and a potential road game to kick off the playoffs. Los Angeles is 5-1 ATS in the past six games inside the division, and they're 7-2 ATS in the past nine on the road. They were trampled in Dallas in Week 15, however. San Francisco is 5-1 ATS in the past six against winning teams, but just 7-18-1 ATS in the past 26 as a favorite and 2-7-1 ATS in the past 10 inside the division. The 49ers are 6-2 ATS in the past eight meetings with the Rams, however, and the under is 5-1 in the past six meetings in the Bay Area.

-- The Giants and Redskins tangle in D.C. in a game with nothing on the line outside of pride. The bets cash the same, however. New York is 11-3 ATS in the past 14 on the road, while going 10-2 ATS in the past 12 as a road underdog. The Redskins are 2-7 ATS in the past nine at home, although they should have covered in Week 15 (see above). Ugh. The G-Men are 9-4 ATS in the past 13 meetings, while the favorite is 4-1 ATS in the past five in this series. The under is also 5-1 in the past six in this series, and 5-2 in the past seven at FedEx Field.

-- The Ravens can clinch the No. 1 overall seed in the AFC with a win over the Browns, who stunningly beat them back on Sept. 29 in Baltimore by a 40-25 score as the 'over' hit. The Ravens are 7-1 ATS in the past eight games overall, and they're 4-0 ATS in the past four on the road. The Browns are still barely alive for a playoff spot, but need to win out with help. The Browns are 3-0-1 ATS in the past four at home, but just 2-8-1 ATS in the past 11 at FirstEnergy Stadium vs. Ravens.

-- The Raiders and Chargers meet in Carson. Soon this will be Las Vegas vs. Los Angeles, which is still weird. The Raiders are 1-4 ATS in the past five meetings in this series, with the road team 7-3 ATS in the past 10 meeting. The under is 5-1 in the past six in this series.

-- The Cowboys are 16-5 ATS in the past 21 inside the NFC East, while the Eagles are 4-10 ATS in the past 14 at home while going 1-6 ATS in the past seven at home vs. Cowboys. The Eagles are also 0-4 ATS in the past four meetings overall. With the road team also 11-5 ATS in the past 16 meetings, all trends point to Dallas.

-- The Cardinals are 5-1-1 ATS in the past seven on the road, but just 1-4-1 ATS in the past six against winning teams. The Seahawks are 4-1-1 ATS in the past six overall, but they're just 2-5 ATS in the past seven at home. Arizona is 4-0 ATS in the past four trips to Seattle, and 4-1-1 ATS in the past six meetings overall. The road team is 8-1-1 ATS in the past 10 meetings overall in the series.

-- The Packers and Vikings meet on Monday night. The Packers are 2-6 ATS in the past eight battles on MNF, while the Vikings are 2-11 ATS in the past 13 on Monday, so something's gotta give. In this series the Packers are 1-4 ATS in the past five trips to the Twin Cities, while the home team is 6-1 ATS in the past seven meetings. Two of this Thursday’s top college basketball betting matchups are rematches of a previous head-to-head meeting last December.

Starting things off, the Maryland Terrapins go on the road to face the Seton Hall Pirates. Later that night, NC State will square off against the Auburn Tigers in Auburn Arena.

Betting Matchup

Maryland took a step backwards in the national rankings with last Wednesday’s 76-69 road loss to Penn State as a two-point underdog. This was the Big Ten’s Terrapins’ first straight-up loss of the season against 10 wins. They closed as heavy favorites in those first 10 games. Maryland is 5-6 against the spread and the total has stayed UNDER in three of its last four games. The team is averaging 77.1 points per game while holding opposing teams to 62.2 PPG. Senior guard Anthony Cowan Jr. leads the way with 16.5 points a game while shooting 42.7% from the field.

Saturday’s 68-48 loss to Rutgers as slight 1 ½-point road favorites was the Big East’s Pirates’ third SU loss in their last five games. They also lost to Oregon and Iowa State as slight underdogs. Seton Hall is 6-4 both SU and ATS. The total stayed UNDER 141 points in Saturday’s loss and it has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in five of the team’s last six outings. Shooting sensation Myles Powell is out indefinitely after suffering a head injury against Rutgers. The senior guard is sixth in the nation in scoring with 21.2 PPG.

Betting Trends

-- The Terrapins are 13-3 SU in their last 16 December games and the total has stayed UNDER in four of their last five games against the Big East.

-- The Pirates have failed to cover in five of their last six games played in December and the total has stayed UNDER in 12 of their last 18 games against a team from the Big Ten.

-- These two met last December with Seton Hall coming away with a 78-74 victory as a 7 ½-point road underdog. The total went OVER 140 points.

Betting Matchup

Following a season opening ACC loss to Georgia Tech, the Wolfpack have strung together eight SU wins in their last nine games. The other loss came against Memphis on Nov. 28. They have been able to cover ATS in four of their last five games following a 2-3 start against the closing number. The total has gone OVER in five of NC State’s last seven contests. This is one of the higher scoring teams in the country with an average of 82.5 PPG. Senior guard CJ Bryce is the leading scorer with 15.9 points and he has exceeded that average in three of his last five games.

The SEC’s Tigers have climbed the national ranks with a perfect SU 9-0 start. They closed as favorites in every game while going 5-4 ATS. The total has stayed UNDER in three of Auburn’s last four games. J’ Von McCormick scored 20 points in a recent victory against St. Louis in the Mike Slive Invitational. Senior guard Samir Doughty is the team’s leading scorer with 17.3 PPG. He was held to eight points in that game while shooting a dismal 16.7 percent from the field. Auburn is averaging 83.0 points while pulling down 43.0 rebounds a game.

My selection for this race is SUGAR LOVE. Is difficult not to consider based on Equibase Speed Figures which have been decent - 73 avg - of late. Martinez has her trained soundly to break quickly out of the gate. Had one of the most favorable speed figures of this group in her last affair. GRACELY - Sharp dividends over time for this jock and conditioner duo. Is a solid choice - given the 78 Equibase Speed Figure from her most recent race. LYONAISSE - Has performed soundly recently in sprint races, posting a nifty 62 avg Equibase speed fig. Clearly will improve with change in blinkers (going off) today.

The Terrapins last played on the 10th when they lost a close one at Penn State. For Mark Turgeon's team it was their first loss of the year and they will look to bounce-back tonight on the road - again - this time in North New Jersey where they will play a Seton Hall team that happens to be reeling right now as the Pirates have dropped two in a row.

The Hall has lost to Iowa State by 10 points and to Rutgers by 20 points over their last two contests, so they are in need of a game that does not get away from them at the very least tonight in front of the home crowd.

The loss of Myles Powell to a head injury he suffered against Rutgers is going to hurt, no two ways about it, but the fact we are getting a bunch of points does make it so that we do not have to win the game - just cover the game.

Seton Hall coach Kevin Williard is going to have to earn his pay tonight as Maryland has the talent - Anthony Cowan Jr. and Jalen Smith to name a pair - to blow this game open, but after the 9 day layoff between games and playing away from home once again, I will call for this game to be closer than expected.

Maryland ekes-out the road win tonight with Seton Hall getting the underdog cover.

Leave it to the Democrats to always disrupt a good thing. Because their debate is being held at Loyola Marymount University, this game will be at the Galen Center on the campus of USC.

Regardless of the locale, I'm laying the points with Loyola Marymount, as it's won three straight home games and could continue that as the de facto home team in this one.

When these two met last season in Portland, it was LMU playing one of its best all-around games of the season, scoring 85 points - the most against a D-I program all season.

Eli Scott finished with 14 points, eight rebounds, and three assists on 4-of-5 shooting, and this season, he is back.

This year's team has been phenomenal offensively, as it's been shooting the ball at an astonishing rate. Only Dayton (53.9 percent) and Kansas (52.9 percent) shoot the ball at a higher rate than Loyola's 52.0 percent (292-for-562).

Loyola has had a decent non-conference schedule, with Reno, Colorado State, Air Force, Indiana State, Duquesne and No. 20 Colorado helping the Lions prepare for the campaign.

Take Loyola in this one, as it will roll.

Goalie Carter Hart was fantastic between the pipes and I am expecting more of the same from Philadelphia Thursday night. Getting Travis Konecny back was key on Tuesday plus the Flyers got goals from Claude Giroux, Jakob Voracek and Sean Couterier in the win over the Ducks. Getting the big guys going for Philly is a key to their success and they are being undervalued here. The market activity is showing movement toward Buffalo but the Sabres have lost 13 of 19 road games this season! Also, Buffalo relies heavily on Jack Eichel and he is red hot but the Sabres need more from the rest of the hockey club and they're not getting that. Keep in mind Buffalo started the season with wins in 9 of 12. That means that since then they have lost 16 of 23 games. Atlanta is 6-22. Only Golden State has a worse record in the NBA. The Hawks have lost their last five games by an average of 17.2 points. They are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games versus Western Conference opponents. The Jazz have won three in a row. This is the start of a three-game road trip. The Jazz have been very good as a road favorite against bad teams covering eight of the last 11 times when facing opponents with a home winning percentage of less than .400. Underrated Donovan Mitchell can match Trae Young's scoring and the Jazz have a huge edge in the middle with Rudy Gobert and the Hawks missing Collins. Point guard Mike Conley is out for Utah. This is one of the most anticipated games of the entire NBA season. It’s the two teams with the best records in the NBA in the Los Angeles Lakers (24-4) and Milwaukee Bucks (24-4) squaring off. And when two elite teams get together, I usually look at backing the UNDER.
You know you’re going to get a great defensive effort from both teams with this being a matchup of the top two teams in the NBA. Plus, the reason these teams are so good is because they get after it defensively. The Bucks rank 1st in defensive efficiency while the Lakers are 4th in defensive efficiency.
There’s also some injuries here that will benefit the UNDER. The Bucks are without starting PG Eric Bledsoe and his 15 points per game. The Lakers are without Kyle Kuzma and his 11.1 points per game. Anthony Davis (27.4 PPG) is also questionable after sitting out last game with an ankle injury.

I'll gladly take my chances with the Wolfpack going into Auburn and leaving with at least a cover as a 7.5-point dog. I just feel like we are getting too good a price to pass up a play on NC State and I believe that value stems from the fact that the Tigers come in a perfect 9-0 and ranked No. 12 in the country.
I'm not about to sit here and say Auburn isn't a good team, but who have they beat? The Tigers have not played a single team from a Power 6 conference and 5 of their 9 wins have come by 10-points or less, including each of their last two. Auburn only beat St Louis by 6 last time out as a 11-point favorite and the game before barely squeaked by Furman 81-78 as a 12.5-point favorite.
NC State opened the season with an ugly loss at home to Georgia Tech, but have won 8 of their last 9 and the only loss was by 5-points to Memphis on a neutral floor. While the Wolfpack aren't ranked at the moment, this is a team many felt would end up in the Top 25 when the season started.
Let's also not overlook the fact that NC State beat Auburn 78-71 as a 2-point home dog last year. Wolfpack brought a lot back from last year's squad, while the Tigers lost 5 key pieces from their Final Four team, including three elite starters in Bryce Brown, Jared Harper and Chuma Okeke. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if NC State won outright. Give me the Wolfpack +7.5!
