Robert Ferringo's Picks For College Basketball

1-Unit Play. Take #808 Notre Dame (-9.5) over Wake Forest (7 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 29)
I don't know that Notre Dame should be favored by this much over pretty much anyone. However, Wake Forest may have just lost Brandon Childress, who missed Sunday's overtime loss to Virginia with a foot injury. He is the team's leading scorer and most important player. This would also leave the Demon Deacons without their two top scorers, two best players, and two primary ball handlers. The Irish are much better than their record suggests. They have played one of the toughest schedules in the ACC and five of their last six losses have come by three points or fewer (including their last two). Notre Dame should get a rare blowout.

1-Unit Play. Take #833 Oklahoma (+1) over Kansas State (8 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 29)
I'm not entirely sure why Kansas State is favored over anyone. The have dumped 11 of their last 15 games and six of their last seven. This team is a mess. Oklahoma isn't great on the road, but they are tighter on both ends of the court right now.

1-Unit Play. Take #837 South Florida (Pk) over Tulane (8 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 29)
South Florida has to be by far the biggest disappointment in the AAC this year. However, I think they will snap out of their funk and get a rare win here. They have lost five in a row and I think that they are due. USF has the better backcourt and Tulane looks allergic to defense at times. Brian Gregory is further ahead in his rebuild than Ron Hunter and it should show here.

3-Unit Play. Take #841 Marquette (+1.5) over Xavier (8:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 29)
You don't give Markus Howard points. This Xavier team has been perfectly unimpressive this year and I think they are outclassed again in this one. The Musketeers simply don't have good guard play, and losing Quentin Goodin certainly isn't helping anything. Marquette has played a really good schedule and they have proven they can win on the road against good and mediocre teams. The Golden Eagles are big enough on the inside to hold their own against the bruising Musketeers, and the visitors clearly have the better backcourt. No bet on Howard is a bad bet.

1-Unit Play. Take #844 Penn State (-5.5) over Indiana (8:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 29)
The Hoosiers have not played on the road much this year. And they have not played well on the road this season, losing three of their four away games. It is kind of insane they have only played four road games (of 20) and their have lost by 20, 16 and 9 away from home. Penn State has been really good at home and I think that they are the better team here.

3-Unit Play. Take #851 San Diego State (-10) over New Mexico (9 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 29)
New Mexico is off the rails right now. I'm not going to run through the litany of things that have happened off the court to sap this team of its four best players. But right now they are neck-and-neck with Wyoming for the worst roster in the Mountain West. Not only is this team overmatched in personnel, but they have so many distractions right now that I don't know how they expect to compete with one of the best teams in the country. New Mexico's last three losses have come by 33, 21 and 22 points. And all have come against worse teams than the Aztecs.

Let's get back on track and post a solid winner today and get on a great 7-0 Run like we are in teh NBA. Note, we likely have another 7*NBA Selection today as we aim for +7000 on the year in the NBA today. Per this game, this is the first time Coach Nate Oats will face LSU. He knows what's up. The thing here is that Coach Oats understands what this means to Bama fans to beat LSU. This is why Alabama is only a 5 point underdog on the road against LSU who just beat Texas and who is a perfect 6-0 in Conference Play. Alabama has only lost 2 conference games this year and that by 15 points (including overtime) to Florida and Kentucky and won the other 4 games. Alabama's offense is dynamic this year. They put up 77 against a Kansas State team who plays very hard defense and 83 against Auburn when they crushed the Tigers by 19 points. This team even put up 90 points on Mississippi State and teams are having issues with Coach Oats and his offense that he brought from Buffalo. You combine this witH LSU outside the top 100 on offense, they are likely to give up 80 points to Bama today but this is a LSU team that put up 80+ points on a good Florida defense as well. We are aware that this total is high but given the fact that Alabama will be a great active dog today, LSU dropping sub 70 points against Texas last game and given the pace of these teams, this game is indeed likely to go Over here.

Memphis has covered four straight games when playing the second game of a back-to-back and 6-2 ATS in their last eight games as a favorite. Take the Grizz as Memphis gets another win tonight.

The Washington Capitals will head back home to face the Nashville Predators after a big road win following the All-Star break. The club traveled to Montreal Monday night and won 4-2 against a Canadian team that was 4-1 prior to the loss. The Capitals were dominant in the performance even without their top player Alex Ovechkin. I will look for the same type of performance against this struggling Predators team tonight in Washington. The Capitals lead the Eastern Conference with a 34-11-5 overall record and is now riding a 4 game win streak while winning 7 of their last 10 games. Holtby hasn't been perfect on the season but the defense in front of him has been great. The net minder is now 19-9-4 on the season with a 3.05 goals against average but the club still ranks 5th best in the league in goals per game. Nashville is now 12th in the Western Conference with a 22-19-7 overall record. The club has struggled all season and has found no consistency on offense or defense. The Predators have won 4 of their last 10 games while losing their last contest to Toronto 5-2. The Capitals will also have a chip on their shoulder and be looking for some redemption after the Predators beat the club 6-5 back in October. Look, the Predators have payed the Capitals tough in recent years but this isn't the same Nashville squad. Washington is 4-1 in their last 5 games at home, the favorite is 4-1 in the last 5, the Predators are 0-4 in their last 4 Wednesday games and the Caps are 4-0 vs the Western Conference. Look for theCapitals to win this game 5-3 tonight in Washington.

You have Oladipo coming back today as well and it will take him and the entire team to learn their new roles with him back in the lineup. Given the Pacers loss, given Oladipo's return and given the Bulls having a let down after the Big Spurs win, we like this game to likely go Under for our 8th straight NBA Winner. I'm laying the points with Chattanooga on Wednesday night. Samford has hit the skids and even though they hung around and covered as a big dog in their most recent game, there's talk that HC Scott Padgett could be in his final season with the Bulldogs. Samford is getting out-scored 83-69 on average in conference play. Suffice it to say, they're a mess at both ends of the floor. They're also on a 1-7-1 ATS slide against teams with a winning record. Chattanooga fits the bill and have been tremendous against teams with a losing record, going 7-1-1 ATS in their last 9. The Mocs are nailing nearly 49% of their FGA in conference action, while Samford has allowed Southern Conference rivals to connect on 48% of their shots, including 40% of their 3-pointers. We also have the better rebounding team -- and it's worth noting the Bulldogs average less than 10 assists per game and commit over 15 turnovers per game. Both teams are struggling in the ACC. Wake just lost to Virginia despite not having a few of their top players on the floor. Notre Dame isn’t one of the faster tempos, but will have a lot more possessions than a team like Virginia. Wake is going to have a tough time keeping up in this game without Brandon Childress, Chaundee Brown. The Irish don’t foul and they don’t turn the ball over so Wake is going to have to earn their points the hard way. This Irish Defense isn’t great, but it’s better than the Wake Offense that just can’t be productive without their top scorers. Notre Dame has veteran leadership and can score behind the three point line. At some point the Irish will go on a run that Wake won’t be able to cut into. Take Notre Dame.

Currently, Iowa St is an LJP 4D. Sharp money has consistently been fading Villanova and Baylor and fading them hard. It's not much of a surprise for me to see the sharp money on Iowa St but even with the drop from 5 to 4, it is the biggest LJP move of the day. Tough to bet against Baylor but the sharp money keeps doing it. Maybe it will go better for them today than they did with Nova yesterday. Just glad the Nova fade didn't make it in this content. Past 3 games of all the teams in the NBA...in the first half...the Grizz have the top offensive rating and best defensive rating, coming in with a 20 net rating in the 3 wins since the debacle in Boston. Both these teams are on no rest AND travel...with the Grizz off a nice win with the Knicks off a bad loss. Grizzlies proved they can beat a team that ISN'T. bottom dweller last night as they took down the Nuggets...albeit very banged up, while the Knicks went to Charlotte and put up 92 points in a loss to the Hornets...winless most of January and in those losses the worst offensive rating and worst net rating as a team in January.
Also backing a 12-5 trend last 17 games in this specific spot with both teams on no rest.
Grizzlies are hungrier than ever, need every game they can get if they really want to possibly sneak into the playoffs...and no travel and lack of rest should stop them from imposing their will on a much lesser team!

OKC should roll over the Kings with the Kings two key big men still out with injury, Bagley and Holmes. With the Kings coming off one of the most improbable wins of all time vs the T-wolves the other night, i expect a "come down " game from them tonight. The Thunder are 18-5 ATS on the road and 5-0 ATS in their last 5 road games. OKC is also 4-1 ATS on the road after a loss, which will be the situation tonight. Okay 1 more, the thunder are also 3-0 ATS as 3/3.5 point favorites. The Kings have been terrible at home, going 8-13 ATS in their arena and only picking up 8 wins. Not to mention the Thunder have the better offense and defense. The Thunder rank 10th defensively and are 6th in FG%. A very efficient team that plays like they all have tons of experience. I think Billy Donovan is a very underrated coach. Now that he has the pieces he wants, he can truly coach the team. OKC is simply the better team however you want to put it. ATS, record wise, roster wise, coaching, offense, defense, rebounding, you name it. Thunder get the win tonight. Roll with OKC.

I love this WVU team. The grittiest team in the country. West Virginia has already beaten Texas Tech this year, (by 12 points) and they will do it once more tonight. WVU has the better offense AND defense. Known for their defense, WVU ranks 11th in the nation. You guys know my two favorite ingredients to road wins are defense and rebounding. WVU also ranks 4th in offensive rebounding and 58th in defensive rebounding. Like i said, Gritty. Having two of the best big men in the conference can also help with that haha. The Mountaineers are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games while TTU is only 4-10 ATS in their last 14, losing 4 of their last 6 games. If WVU wants a quality road win, tonight is the time to get one. The Mountaineers big men will be too much for TTU this game. Roll with West Virginia.

Marquette has been on fire as of late winning 8 of their last 9 with their last loss coming in heartbreaking fashion. After leading all game Marquette failed to close the game out vs Butler and lost in OT (we still got the cover). I know the way that game ended is going to leave a sour taste in the Coach and Players mouths and Marquette will be eager and ready to bounce back vs a spiralling Xavier team that they have already beat by 20 at home a couple weeks ago. Like i said yesterday with Butler, Xavier is a very similar team (but worse) and Marquette will exploit those weaknesses once again just like they did with Butler. Marquette will bust your zone defense. They have now scored 82 or more points in 4 straight games. There is no stopping this offense lead by Markus Howard who is averaging 28.3 PPG. Not to mention the bevy of snipers this team has, along with one of the best on ball defenders in the country with Sacar Anim. Marquette is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games as Xavier is only 1-4. Not to mention, two of Xaviers big 10 losses this season have come at home, a very inconsistent team with terrible conference play. Xaviers defense really isnt all that better than Marquette's, they are very comparable. The offenses on the other hand cannot be compared. The Golden eagles look like they have the best offense in the Nation right now. Xavier ranks 180th in offensive efficiency. Marquette has proven they can play with ANYONE, surely they can play with Xavier here tonight. I love the Golden eagles as underdogs. Go with Marquette.
