A pair of Top 5 college basketball teams in the Atlantic 10 and the Big 12 face a test on the road this Tuesday night as the featured betting showdowns on the board.

The early game pits the No. 5 Dayton Flyers on the road against the VCU Rams. The No. 1 team in the nation will also be in action with the Baylor Bears heading to Norman to face the Oklahoma Sooners.

Betting Matchup

Dayton has a game and half lead over Rhode Island atop the Atlantic 10 standings at a perfect 12-0 straight-up. It is 23-2 overall and the current winning streak stretches to 14 games going back to late December. The Flyers are 13-11-1 against the spread after failing to cover in four of their last five games. The total has stayed UNDER in three of their last four games. Sophomore guard Obi Toppin posted 19 points in Saturday’s 71-63 road win against UMass. SEEKING A MILE - Have to give this gelding a shot. Ran a strong race last time out within the last 30 days. When a sprinter is back in a race less than 10 days after his last outing, it generally means he's fit. You have to like that most recent race speed fig, 72, which is the best most recent race speed figure of this group. BLACKTIEANDTUX - Gelding had the second fastest workout of the day prepping for this. Finished outside the top 3 last out at Mahoning Valley Race Cour, but was within five lengths of the winner. Opening at 9/2 makes me think he's got a chance. Should do well in this event. Weight shift of -5 from January 21st race at Mahoning Valley Race Cour.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 OFTEN ENOUGH (ML=3/1), #4 LUNAR HEAT (ML=4/1), #1A SHOW SLIDING HOME (ML=9/2),

OFTEN ENOUGH - This animal doesn't have a champion's spirit. Time-and-again finishes in the place or show spot. Will probably be stranded with much too much to do down the homestretch. No favorable outcomes for this pony in a short distance contest over the last couple months tells me that this gelding is in a difficult spot improbable that the rating he garnered on January 29th will be good enough in this affair. SHOW SLIDING HOME - In this type of situation, this steed's inability to close any ground in the last affair is a troubling signal. The Brain always warns me to keep away from horses in sprint contests that haven't finished in the money in sprint affairs of late. When looking at today's class rating, he will have to notch a better speed fig than last race out to compete in this dirt sprint.

SEEKING A MILE - Will almost certainly come out solid - I have liked the way this gelding has moved rapidly to the front end recently. The rapid return to the track points to a reliable effort today. They will try their best I am sure to get this losing streak placed in their rear-view mirror, but it will not be easy as Patrick Chamber's Nittany Lions are currently ranked in the Top-Ten in the nation as they bring an 8 game winning streak into this conference battle and they have also covered in each of those 8 wins.

Since Illinois is not only riding a 4 game straight up losing streak, but also riding a series skid of 6 in a row both straight up and against the spread. Throw in the fact that leading scorer Ayo Dosunmu sat out Illinois latest loss with a leg injury and is listed as questionable for this game and I have a strong inkling that this game is going to get away from the visitors and they will be heading back to Champaign saddled with a 5th straight loss.

This is a special season brewing for the Nittany Lions who are now 20-5 and led by senior forward Lamar Stevens who continues to pump in the points and enters this game just 35 points away from moving up to second on the all-time scoring list in school history.

What’s not to like about the Nittany Lions right now? They’re riding an eight-game SU and ATS winning streak, which includes four convincing victories at home: 77-61 over Northwestern, 83-77 over Minnesota, 64-49 over Indiana and Ohio State 90-76. The winning streak has lifted Penn State all the way up to second place in the Big Ten standings (10-5 record), just a game behind first-place Maryland (11-3).



Almost as impressive as the Nittany Lions’ 8-0 SU and ATS run is the fact they’ve cashed in 10 of 14 home games this season, the most recent being Saturday against Northwestern (which I gave you as a free winner). They’ve also been dynamite in this price range, going 6-2 ATS when laying five points or more.



Just as Penn State has been traveling north in the Big Ten standings, Illinois has been going south. The Illini have followed up a seven-game winning streak (5-2 ATS) by dropping four in a row (1-3 ATS). And after picking up three straight road victories, Illinois has dropped its last two on the highway, falling at Iowa (72-65) and Rutgers (72-57), both as a 4½-point underdog.



The Illini’s big problem? They can’t put the ball through the net with any regularity. They haven’t scored as many as 70 points in a game since a 79-62 win at Purdue on Jan. 18. In six game since, Illinois has averaged just 63.3 ppg. Compare that to Penn State, which is averaging 78.1 ppg during its eight-game winning streak, tallying at least 75 points in seven of those victories.



Finally, for those who believe in history, there’s this: Penn State has defeated Illinois six consecutive times and is 7-0 ATS in the last seven. The last time the Illini got the money in this rivalry? You’ve got to go all the way back to Feb. 9, 2014.

If you've followed the Big Ten this season you know how profitable it's been to simply bet the home teams - with the exceptions of Northwestern and Nebraska.

Penn State improved to 13-1 in State College with a 77-61 rout of Northwestern on Saturday. That was the Lions' eighth straight win overall, a stretch where they've gone 7-0-1 ATS.

This has been a one-sided series with PSU taking the last six straight-up and there's no reason to buck that trend considering Illinois carries a four-game losing streak into Happy Valley.

Brad Underwood's team simply isn't getting the job done on defense of late. When the Illini reeled off seven straight wins in January its foes shot just 36.9 percent. That number has jumped up to 48.9 during its current skid.

Illinois is coming off a 72-57 loss at Rutgers, a game where the Scarlet Knights shot 49.1 percent, including 7-of-15 from long-range.

Offensively the Illini struggled as well at Rutgers minus leading scorer Ayo Dosunmu as they hit just 31.1 percent. Dosunmu (15.8 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 3.3 apg) is questionable tonight with a knee injury, but with or without his services this is an Illinois team that ranks 12th in the Big Ten in offensive efficiency. By comparison, Penn State is No. 3.

The Lions are also deadly from deep, sinking 33.6 percent of their three-pointers, averaging 8.2 triples per game. They had 11 games with nine or more threes this season, including 14 in an 88-76 win at Purdue last Tuesday.

I got no problem laying the big number with Davidson on the road against the Hawks. The Wildcats are finally starting to live up their lofty preseason expectations. Davidson has won 6 of 8 and are fresh off a 93-64 blowout win on the road against the Bonnies.
That was hands down the best performance of the season for the Wildcats and there should be no taking the foot off the gas with a mere 13-11 record and 7-5 (T-6) mark in the A 10. As long as Davidson shows up ready to play, they should win and cover easy.
St. Joseph's is winless in conference play at 0-12 and enter on a streak of 3 straight losses by 17 or more. Hawks were without their best player in Ryan Daly (20.4 ppg) on Saturday at Rhode Island.
Daley is questionable, but seeing how he was in a walking boot, he's unlikely to play just 3 days later. Big time loss. He's the only St. Joe's player that is averaging double-figures. He also leads the team in rebounding, assists and steals.
Wildcats 5-1 ATS last 6 games as a favorite. Hawks 1-6 ATS last 7 as an underdog and 1-4 ATS last 5 as a home dog. Take Davidson!

The Penn State Nittany Lions are 8-0 SU & 8-0 ATS in their last eight games overall. They continue to be undervalued because they are much better than they get credit for. Look for them to handle Illinois at home tonight.
The most impressive part about this streak is their three upset road wins at Michigan State, Purdue and Michigan by a combined 26 points. They also crushed Nebraska by 12 on the road and have won their four home games by an average of 12.8 points per game.
Illinois is 0-4 SU & 1-3 ATS in its last four games overall. The Fighting Illini lost their leading scorer in Ayo Dosunmu (15.8 PPG) to a knee injury in a loss to Michigan State two games back. He didn’t play against Rutgers and they were crushed by 15 on the road last time out. Dosunmu is very questionable to return tonight.
Penn State is a perfect 12-0 ATS in its last 12 February games. The Nittany Lions are 24-8 ATS in their last 32 games after four straight games committing 14 or fewer turnovers. The Nittany Lions are 24-9-3 ATS in their last 36 games overall. Bet Penn State Tuesday.

The Illinois Fighting Illini (16-9 Overall, 8-6 Big 10) are trying to keep their NCAA tournament hopes alive as they face a Big road test against the Penn State Nittany Lions (20-5 Overall, 10-4 Big 10).
Illinois is riding a four game losing skid. Their most recent loss coming on the road against Rutgers, 72-57. The loss put Illinois at 1-4 over their last five.
Before the four straight losses, Illinois had won seven in a row and were a dark horse to win the Big 10.
Now, Illinois might need to win four of their last six and play deep into the Big 10 tournament, if they want a chance to dance in the NCAA tourny.
Penn State looks to be one of the most slept on teams in America. The Nittany Lions have won eight straight. Their last win came at home against Northwestern, 77-61.
Tonight, Penn State could be without Myreon Jones. Jones is averaging 14.4 points and has missed the past three games with an illness.
Even without Jones, I like the way Penn State has been playing. They are 13-1 at home this year and have not lost a home game since January 11th.
Look for the Fighting Illini to struggle in this one. They are 4-6 on the road this season, and shooting 32.5 percent from the field in road matchups this season.
Take the NIttany Lions to get it done and cover on the road for the win. Go Penn State!

Tuesday CBB Free play. My selection is on Pittsburgh plus the points over Florida State at 8 pm et on Tuesday.
The revenge angle is certainly fueling this line with Pitt having defeated Florida State by a bucket back in November. The Panthers limp into this game off back-to-back losses. Note that they've yet to lose three games in a row this season so they could be heading into uncharted territory here. Florida State is fresh off back-to-back close games against Duke and Syracuse - splitting those two contests. While the Seminoles would certainly like to avenge that early season loss to the Panthers, I'm not convinced that Pitt draws a great deal of motivation from the 'Noles on a Tuesday night in February. I simply feel the Panthers are a live underdog catching a generous helping of points on a court where blowouts have been few and far between in ACC play this season. Take Pittsburgh (8*).

The Dayton Flyers are cheap tonight as only 2.5-point road favorites over the VCU Rams. Dayton is 23-2 on the season and 12-0 in conference play. They beat VCU 79-65 at home in their first meeting. VCU is 1-3 SU & 1-3 ATS in its last four games overall with double-digit road losses to Rhode Island and Richmond as well as an upset home loss to George Mason as 14.5-point favorites. I just don’t see how they’re supposed to compete with Dayton tonight given those recent results. VCU is 0-6 ATS as an underdog this season. The Rams are 8-24 ATS in their last 32 games as an underdog and 3-10 ATS in their last 13 games as a home underdog. Give me Dayton.

I'll take my chances here with the Wildcats going on the road and knocking off LSU. This typically a spot where I would look to take the home team, but that's just how little trust I personally have in this Tigers team.
LSU is tied for 2nd in the SEC at 9-3 with Auburn, who both trail Kentucky by 1-game. Thing is the Tigers are extremely lucky to be sitting where they are. Of their 9 wins, 6 have come by 4 or fewer points. We have seen that good fortune catch up to them here of late, as they have lost 3 of their last 4.
I think some people are giving them a pass because all 3 of those losses were on the road, but let's not overlook the lone win at home against a bad Missouri team by a mere 4-points.
Not to mention the lack of defense they are playing. LSU is giving up 83.8 ppg over their last 5 and 78.2 ppg in conference play. Tigers rank 12th in the conference in both defensive efficiency and effective field goal defense.
Sure the Tigers offense is good, but so is Kentucky's and the Wildcats play defense. Kentucky is No. 2 in the SEC in defensive efficiency and No. 1 in effective field goal defense. They are also No. 1 in 2-point defense %. LSU's offense is No. 1 in 2-point % but just No. 8 in 3-point %.
With this being the only meeting, a win here by Kentucky would be huge for a tie-breaker. There's also extra motivation here for some Wildcats, who have not forgot last year's 71-73 loss at home to LSU, which the Tigers won on a tip-in that looked a lot like goaltending. Give me Kentucky +2.5!

Penn St has won EIGHT straight (8-0 ATS) and looks for a ninth consecutive victory and tries to stay close in the race for the Big Ten regular season crown (Nittany Lions are one game behind first-place Maryland) when it hosts Illinois on Tuesday. Penn St's current streak is its longest since joining the Big Ten in 1993. The Fighting Illini are 16-9, including 8-6 in the Big Ten (two games behind Penn State). However, unlike the Nittany Lions, Illinois has dropped FOUR straight following a seven-game winning streak.
Brad Underwood was a head coach at Stephen F Austin and Oklahoma St before being hired at Illinois back on March 18, 2017. He signed a six-year contract through 2023 worth $18 million but after two seasons in Champaign, his Fighting Illini were just 26-39 (11-27 in Big Ten play). However, as Underwood entered the current season, he returned FOUR starters from last season's team plus added 6-9 freshman center Kofi Cockburn. Illinois' seven-game winning streak had them 16-5 (8-2 in the Big Ten) and ranked 19th as January can\me to a close. However, an 0-4 start to February has the team reeling. Each of the first three losses during the slide were decided by single digits but then Illinois fell 72-57 at Rutgers on Saturday. That loss came with leading scorer Ayo Dosunmu (15.8-4.3-3.3) sidelined with a knee ailment, and his absence was felt. "Without our alpha, we competed, but you can't shoot 26 percent on the road (in the second half) and win," coach Brad Underwood said. Trouble is, Dosunmu will miss again tonight. Guards Feliz (11.2 & 4.8), Frazier (9.5) and Griffin (8.6 & 4.7) will have to step up. Illini freshman Cockburn (13.6 & 9.0) notched his 10th double-double Saturday with 10 points and 10 rebounds and is joined up front by the 6-9 Bezhanishvili (7.7 & 4.9).
Penn St won the NIT back in 2018 (26 wins) but fell off badly last season, finishing 14-18 (7-13 in the Big Ten). However, the Nittany Lions returned FOUR starters and seem to be headed to one of the school's best-ever seasons have impressed so far this season. Penn St entered the AP poll back on Dec 16 (at No. 23), giving the school its first top-25 ranking since March of 1996. Sounds impressive, right? It's even more so when one realizes that Penn St's previous top-25 ranking (to 1996) came back in 1954! As noted above, Penn St is now ranked 9th. 6-6 senior forward Lamar Stevens scored 23 points against Northwestern to boost his team-leading mark to 17.7 PPG (adds 6.8 PPG), while sophomore guard Myles Dread chipped in a season-high 16. Sophomore guard Myreon Jones, who ranks second to Stevens with 14.1 points per contest, missed his third straight game Saturday due to an illness and is questionable for this one. That means that fellow guards Brockington (9.8), Dread (8.3) and Curtis Jones (6.7) will see more time. The 6-9 Watkins adds 10.0 PPG and is the team's top rebounder at 8.0 per game.
I have no interest is 'stepping in front of' Penn St's 8-0 SU & ATS run with an Illinois team on a four-game losing streak and missing its best player (Dosunmu).
