The popular 0.20 Pick 5 leads off the Woodbine Mohawk card. The sequence has a $75,000 guaranteed pool and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 1

2-Royal Esteem (10-1)-4-year-old mare makes her 3rd start back after the shutdown and fits with this crew. Saftic needs to work a trip and roll off live cover.
3-Kuil Deva (8-1)-This gal is the model of consistency when it comes to picking up checks but is only 2 for the last 33 and 2 for 43 at Wbsb. Will include at this price and should be in the hunt.
5-CT Conabra (5/2)-Lightly raced Kadabra 4-year-old could take a picture tonight and has held her own versus better. Needs a good steer and to mind manners, but best to not overlook.
7-HP Bruxelles (3-1)-5-time winner in 14 starts this year broke as a 3/2 chalk in last but deserves another chance. Mario B. has the lines and he knows well. Could grind her way around and roll by down the lane.

Race 2

3-Dean B Hanover (8/5)-Drury chose the Coleman entry #1 but Cullen should be able to provide a good steer. Betting Line 2-year-old looked powerful in winning her debut all on her own in 153.3 with a 55.2 back half, so will string along.

Race 3

1-Mouth Watering (5-1)-Slow starter will need to find cover but looks to be a threat versus this bunch. McIntosch trainee should be game to the wire at a square price.
6-Isla Seelster (3-1)-0-12 record here isn't inspiring but has hit the board 5 times. Didn't return to action with a bang, first two starts were bad but has been improving. Rolled the back half in .56 last week and could be sitting on a big try.

Race 4

1-Jaydens Place (5-1)-Got sucked around last time to miss by a head against most of this field. Should be forwardly placed and a similar trip might be in the cards. Could surprise and loses McNair which should help the price.
4-Legal Bettor (7/2)-Makes 3rd start for new barn and this post draw may suit slow starter better than starting inside in previous two races. Young can work an effective trip and if pace is lively chances for a picture go up.
8-Julerica (3-1)-Makes 1st start for the Montini barn after a claim and comes off a powerful win from the 9-hole at this class. Nine-time winner in 28 starts at Wbsb could stay good and roll to another picture.

Race 5

6-Knight Angel (4-1)-Winner of >$146k in 2019 has put in 2 clean lines and now bumps up. There should be a few leaving to get the lead so JMac has to work the best trip. Angel can compete with this group, so best to respect.
7-Superlative (9/2)-This is a slow starter that can pick off foes late in the mile if pace is swift. There are more than a couple who have gate speed so this race could set-up nicely for this 5-year-old mare.
8-Cue Hall (5-1)-Drops to a spot to shine and should offer a fair price. 8-year-old had an extended layoff stretching back to last July. This will be the 5th start off the bench, should like the company and last effort was its best.

Donlin firster goes for a barn that shows a debut winner, lures Arrieta, and has some snappy works in a race where only the favorite looks tough; call at first asking.


#6 Haddy Up
Deserving heavy favorite was a speedy 2nd on debut and was bet that day too, but the price will be short and the pick looks like she can run some; backwheel time.


#5 Boozin At Bongos
Underlay was a distant 3rd to the chalk last time, so she needs to improve some 6 lengths, while facing a potential top new shooter as well; using underneath only.


Race Summary
Tab the tote on the 3, as you'd like to see her live and taking money, especially into the teeth of the heavy favorite, and it that's the case you can play her to win and place, and especially to kick off the 10% takeout Pk5 as well, since budget players might be singling 'Haddy, which means a win by the pick would knock out a good percentage of the tickets right off the bat.


Canterbury Park - Race #6

The chalk just missed on debut, drew perfectly, meets a few she just handled, and should only build off that trial run; imposing favorite.


#1 Jollyville
Stretch runner closed to be 5th behind 'Halo in her turf debut, is another who drew well, and will be a price too; can close for a share.


#7 She's Fire and Ice
Logical sort was a troubled and closing 4th to the pick last time and certainly figures, though this wide draw isn't ideal; mixed signals.


Race Summary
You won't get rich on the 2 but 9-5 doesn't seem bad based on what she just did, and where she might be going to play her aggressively to win if the tote allows, while getting some built-in value by singling her in the 10% takeout Pk5, and to kick off the late Pk4 as well, as she just looks too good for this modest group.


Canterbury Park - Race #8

#4 Morning Report
Price player ran well in a comeback that you she needed off the September break, should only improve off that, and has a versatile style to be able to be placed anywhere; upset special.


#6 Bee Bit
Classy favorite will be bet hard, as she's been facing much better of late, but she also regressed mightily last time and now drops, so she could be going the wrong way; trying to beat.


#2 First Hunter
Capable miss beat the pick last time, so obviously she hits hard here, and this post is a coup as well, but she also has no upside, and will be an underlaid price too; still, figures in the mix.


Race Summary
The price will certainly be right on the 4, as she could get overlooked with the 6 especially, but even the 2 taking a lot of play, but her return was encouraging and she should improve here too, so give her a look in all the slots, and especially in the 10% takeout Pk5, and the late Pk4 as well, as a win would go a long way in blowing both sequences up.

Tactical sprint type might get a really good run of things while just behind the pace, and she has been in with some good groups. Price should be right.


#7 Walkin Princess
Can't argue with anyone landing here after this one just romped home with better last time out, but there is some chance that she'll take a step back off the big run.


#2 Pride of Wilko
Has been in with better in recent starts and loves the local footing with 11 wins here, but her two 2020 runs haven't quite been up to her 2019 form, so she's potentially dicey at a modest price.


Race Summary
Lucky at Justice should offer a fair price here and can settle in just behind the leaders today, and if Walkin Princess takes a step back off the big run last out, she can capitalize.

Echo Alpha Six can get the right kind of run here, and there are a couple of other players in here who figure to get bet below fair value, potentially leaving this guy at a playable price.

Big step forward when adding blinkers last time out, and I'll take that one at face value and give him the nod to turn the tables on the guy who just beat him last out.


#4 Titere
Good effort going short last out, but at the end of the day he's still a 13-start maiden who would feel like a wild underlay at something like the 2/1 ML price. He can win here, but I'll take a principled stand against.


#8 Old Fort
Has some chance to wake up in the local debut, and outside of that clunker last out, his form is pretty consistent. That said, he's making his 20th start today and probably gets bet a bit.


Race Summary
Go For Four Frosty showed some forward ability when stretching out and adding blinkers last time out, and he's right in the mix again tonight with something similar -- and probably at a better number than the other two listed players here.

My selection in this contest is RECORDER. Ran a sharp last race. Overall the speed figures of this equine look quite good in this contest. Has a very solid record at the distance and surface, which makes me like this gelding. RETALIATED - Has longshot possibilities and could win at a big price. Has been consistently racing well as of late. JAZZY JUSTIN - He has solid class ratings, averaging 90, and has to be carefully examined in here. Formidable average speed figs in dirt sprint races make this horse a definite contender.

BETTYS BOMBER - Dropping in class figure points from his Oct 14th race at Presque Isle Downs. Based on that data point, I will give this animal the advantage.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 TOUCH OF LA GREY (ML=2/1), #6 MIKE MIKE (ML=5/2), #3 JUST A JOKER (ML=6/1),

TOUCH OF LA GREY - This mount hasn't been near the winner at the finish line recently. Should have at least finished in the money in the last 60 days in a sprint event to be worth a shot at short odds in a sprint. MIKE MIKE - 5/2 is not enough of a value to take on most any entrant that has run poorly in back to back efforts. The speed ratings are going downward. I'm not throwing a few bucks at this less than sharp equine off of that trend. JUST A JOKER - Didn't finish in the money on June 24th at Presque Isle Downs. Followed it up with another less than stellar performance. This horse ran a mediocre speed rating last race out. He shouldn't run better and will probably lose in today's race running that figure.

IT'S A MANS WORLD - Looking at today's class rating, this thoroughbred is meeting an easier field than last time out at Thistledown. I like to see consistency in a racehorse. Look at this gelding's PPs. Almost always in the money. This equine ran well at Thistledown on June 29th. Bounced in the last race, but should rebound today with a sharp effort. This horse is number one in earnings per race entered. He looks sharp in today's race. This gelding is rounding his way back into shape. Should race well today. TAPSHOT - When Bracho and Radosevich work together on equines the win pct has been fantastic at 32. Have to like this gelding today. If you take a look at his PP lines you see a definite trend, getting closer with each and every race. The July 13th race at Thistledown was at a class level of (58). Dropping to a lower class rank considerably, so he should be in a good spot to take this race. Last out at Thistledown this horse finished ahead of today's M/L favorite. Potential play if the public follows the morning line odds. This gelding is obviously on the improve with speed figures of 14, 44, 47 last three out.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 GIFT OF OAK (ML=4/1), #4 WAPAKONETA PHIL (ML=6/1), #1A CAPTAIN WES (ML=6/1),

GIFT OF OAK - Last performed on July 13th at Thistledown, finishing fifth. Unlikely to advance off of that effort today. WAPAKONETA PHIL - Would be taking an underlay on this participant at the likely odds of 6/1. CAPTAIN WES - Difficult to bet on any entrant to turn things around if there is no value to taking the risk. Today's affair is 5 1/2 furlongs. Hasn't finished in the money in a short distance event in the last sixty days. Not the best of omens.

ORDAINED CAT has a quite good shot to take this race. Will most likely come out sharp - I have liked the way this gelding has moved promptly to the front end recently. The speed figure of 62 from his most recent race looks solid in here. Must be considered given the class of races run lately. FULL OF GOLD - Is worth serious consideration and may be a wager - strong speed figures (60 average) at today's distance and surface as of late. With Lopez uptop him, this gelding will probably be able to break out quickly in this event. TRE - Solid average Equibase Speed Figures in dirt sprint races make this pony a solid choice.

Monday let's play Chicago and Cleveland to land Over the total.

Both teams have been showing some offense early on this season, as the Pale Hose come into this division series fresh off 3 games against the Minnesota Twins that all landed Over the total.

Chicago scored 17 runs in those 3 games, but they also allowed 27 runs to be scored against them!

Cleveland followed a pair of 2 run games on Friday and Saturday with a healthy 9 runs plated in yesterday's win over Kansas City to land Over the posted price.

Last season these teams closed by seeing 5 of their final 7 series meetings land Over the posted price and that includes Dylan Cease's lone start versus the Tribe when he allowed 4 runs on 4 hits in his 6 plus innings worked.

Free winner for you on Monday is the Miami Marlins on the run line, against the visiting Baltimore Orioles. I'm well aware the Marlins didn't leave Philly until Monday due to a couple of players contracting coronavirus, and some are quarantined there. I'm rolling with the Fish anyway.

MAKE NOTE: All Run Line/Total plays automatically list pitchers with the starters who are scheduled to go at the time of the wager, and I want you to be sure the following pitchers are the starters of record on your ticket when making your play: Asher Wojciechowski and Pablo Lopez. If one or both of these pitchers is not going, this is a no-play.

Now I have to point out that several sports books offshore and in Las Vegas have done away with the "listed pitchers" action, and I'm not sure how that's affected the auto-list with run line plays and totals. Just be sure those are the pitchers of record, at the very least, when making your wager.

That's because the Marlins should have no trouble teeing off the Orioles' fourth man in the rotation. Wojciechowski joined the Orioles last July and was a dismal 4-8 with a 4.92 ERA in 17 games, including 16 starts to close out the season.

I don't know what he's done to improve during the offseason, but I do know Miami plated 17 runs in its first three games, and that's by manufacturing runs. The Marlins belted just five home runs against Philadelphia, and will open their home season after an 11-6 shellacking of the Phillies on Sunday.

Baltimore was in Boston over the weekend, and didn't too bad in taking two of three. But to stay on the road and now have to face a team in its home opener in that nasty humidity against a starter who thrived at home - I don't like it.

Not a bad start to the season for Detroit, which took two of three in Cincinnati, following up Saturday’s 6-4 victory with Sunday’s 3-2 triumph over a Reds squad that many believe will be a surprise contender in the NL Central. After getting bombed 7-1 in Friday’s opener, the Tigers got tremendous starting and relief pitching over the weekend and cashed as hefty underdogs both times.



Today, Detroit sends righty Michael Fulmer to the mound. Fulmer, who missed all of 2019 after undergoing Tommy John surgery, is looking to rebound from a disastrous 2018 when he posted a 3-12 record. It’s a record, however, that was misleading, because Fulmer pitched far better (respectable 4.69 ERA and 1.31 WHIP) than that win/loss tally suggests.



Although it’s unlikely that Fulmer will go deep in this game (coming back from Tommy John, he’ll have his innings limited), he and the relievers who follow will get the pleasure of facing a Royals lineup that touched home plate just 5 times and produced a whopping 12 hits in three games at Cleveland over the weekend. In fact, the Royals arrive in Detroit batting under .150 as a team!


I know with no fans in the stands, home-field advantage has been diluted this season. That said, it’s interesting to note that the home team went 13-6 in this AL Central rivalry in 2019, with the Tigers taking 7 of 10 meetings in Motown. Look for that trend to continue here, as Detroit appears to be a step ahead of the Royals in the early going during this truncated season.

I really like the value here with Milwaukee on the -1.5 run line in Monday's series opener against the Pirates. This is a big game for the Brewers, who desperately need a win after losing 2 of 3 at Chicago to kickstart the season.
Milwaukee's offense has been quiet for the most part, but should be able to get going against Pirates' starter Steven Brault. Last year Brault had an ugly 5.16 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in 25 appearance (19 starts).
Adrian Houser will take the mound for the Brewers and he's coming off a strong first full season at the big league level. Houser posted a 3.72 ERA and 1.24 WHIP in 35 appearances (18 starts). I look for a strong showing here from Houser against a pretty soft Pittsburgh offense. Pirates hit just .196 with a .235 OBP in their opening series against the Cardinals. Give me the Brewers -1.5 (+110)!
