8-Unit Play. Take #927 Seattle (+1.5, -120) over Los Angeles Angels (9:40 p.m., Friday, Aug. 28)

I love the value on the Mariners here. I don't think that the Angels should be this big of a favorite over any team in the American League. The Angels have been one of the most overrated teams in baseball and they have been one of the worst teams to bet on in the Majors. The Angels are just 2-7 in their last nine games and they are 3-11 in their last 14 games. Los Angeles has lost four straight series. Seattle has won six of its past eight games and they have won three straight series. The Mariners offense has been strong over the last week, scoring 44 runs in their last six games while going 5-1. I think that they can keep that going against a struggling Angels pitching staff that has given up 66 runs over their last 10 games. The Angels are not locked into a starter yet. They could go with Dylan Bundy. Right now the listed starter is Andrew Heaney. I like the bet either way. I would rather Seattle face Heaney. Bundy has been very good this season and has just a 2.58 ERA. I don't think he will continue at that rate. He had a 4.79 ERA last year and a 5.45 ERA in 2018 and Bundy has allowed four runs in each of his last two starts while taking two losses. Heaney has been struggling. He has a 5.52 ERA on the season and has given up 14 runs in his last three starts in just 14 innings while taking three straight losses. Seattle is going with Nick Margevicius and he has been solid over his last three starts. He had a 3.60 ERA and has given up just 15 hits and walks combined in his last three starts. Los Angeles is just 9-20 in their last 29 series openers and 3-9 after an off day. The Angels are 16-35 in their last 51 divisional games. All of the value is on the underdog in this one. And they have the potential to cash this ticket even if they lose the game by one run. Take Seattle here.

3-Unit Play: Take 907 Twins -145 over Tigers (1:10 p.m., Friday, August 28) NOTE: I'm playing the Twins in game 1 of the double-header).
Back to back wins by Detroit and back to back losses by the Twins as the teams head into Friday but I'm betting on Minnesota. The Twins are top-7 in MLB in the offensive metrics I care about the most and in bullpen metrics I deem most important, while the Tigers are outside the top-15 in both categories. The Twins have clobbered lefties on the road, batting .278 in this spot and will take their shots at the vulnerable Matthew Boyd. The Tiger southpaw has not only been a disaster in 2020 but he's been bombed for a 7.76 ERA in his last five starts against the Twins, while giving up 13 home runs in 29 IP, for a 4.03 HRs per 9 IP ratio. Meanwhile, Twins' starter Randy Dobnak is pitching well in 2020 and didn't allow a single run and only three hits in 7 IP against Detroit last season. His team is hitting just .225 at home against righties and .217 against righties overall. I'm backing the Twins in Friday's game 1 of the double-header. Thanks & GL! Scott Spreitzer.

5-Unit Play: Take 923 Dodgers -1.5, -140 over Rangers (8:05 p.m., Friday, August 28)
When your handicap says to play the Dodgers and it's looking like a possible mismatch, the runs line play is not a bad way to go. After a runs line sweep in yesterday's double-header in San Francisco, the Dodgers are 20-4 against the runs line in their 24 wins this season. Meanwhile, the Rangers have covered the runs line in just one of their last 18 losses. Texas will face Dustin May and it's unlikely they'll post the numbers needed to hang around. May has a 3.28 ERA & 1.17 WHIP on the road this season and the Rangers have been horrible against right-handed starters. Texas is dead-last 30th in the league, batting .177 at home against righties (.197 against righties overall). And with the way Mike Minor has been pitching, the Dodgers ought to put enough on the scoreboard to win by two or more runs. I'm laying the runs line with the Dodgers on Friday. Thanks & GL! The Yankees have lost five in a row and all those injuries have seemed to catch up to them. Nonetheless, the Yanks should have some good swings against the Mets Michael Wacha who has a 6.43 ERA in three starts this season and is backed by a mediocre bullpen. Teams that have lost five straight in August are a solid 32-15 the last few years and the Pinstripes are 29-7 after a five-game span with an OBP of .285 or worse. The Mets will take on Jordan Montgomery in the opener and they are 6-24 in road games vs. a starting pitcher with good control (less than 1.75 BB's/start). The Clincher; the Metropolitans are 0-9 as an underdog of +100 to +150 this season.

The Twins Randy Dobnak is 5-1 with a 1.78 ERA has not allowed more than two runs in any of his starts this season. The same cannot be said for Detroit left-hander Matthew Boyd (0-4, 8.48 ERA). Boyd has really struggled against power-laden teams and is 3-17 vs. clubs averaging 1.25 or more HR's a game. (Tigers record) While the Tigers did take the series against the Chicago Cubs, even with that they are 21-70 when playing against a team with a winning record and 3-21 in home games vs. an AL starting pitcher whose WHIP is 1.200 or lower. Twins take the opener of the doubleheader.

2 Unit Play. Take #923 L.A. Dodgers -140 RL over Texas (8:05 p.m., Friday, Aug. 28)
After allowing 10 runs in extra innings to the Giants in defeat, Dodgers' pitchers turned right around and tossed two seven-inning shutouts yesterday and swept their doubleheader. In this interleague affair, you could hardly have two teams going in more the opposite directions. The Dodgers have won 13 of 15 while Texas has dropped 10 of 11. The same is true of the starting pitchers with L.A. Dustin May May 1-1 with a 2.79 ERA (Dodgers 5-1 in his starts) and the Rangers are countering with left-hander Mike Minor (0-5, 6.75 ERA). With Texas losing by 1.8 RPG this season and L.A. winning 2.6 RPG, the best value in this matchup is on the run line.
