Huh? The team that laid a giant egg in the league’s worst Week 1 defeat is laying more than five points? Plus, it emerges from that game beat up, with three players going down in the thrashing at the hands of Baltimore. The fates of three key members of the secondary who sat out the opener are unclear. Cincinnati came away from its opening loss reasonably healthy, and calm rookie QB Joe Burrow passed his first test with a conservative game plan that could be loosened up. Burrow won’t have to deal with the raucous Dawg Pound in what would have been an unsettling scenario.

My simulations make the Browns -2.1 points better on a neutral field, 4.7 points better in a traditional home game, and 3.8 points better in a 2020 home game. I liked a lot of what I saw from Joe Burrow in his debut in a game they likely should have won without the questionable offensive pass interference in the end zone. The Bengals with the points are a must play considering the 2.2 point edge in the model.

Baker Mayfield can only improve off his effort in Baltimore, and Joe Burrow should also be better with an NFL game under his belt. The total has gone Over in four of the past five in this series with an average final score of 49.4 points. It should be in that ballpark again, but jump now at 43.5 before before it potentially rises back up to 44 (could see a 24-20 final score). Over is the play.

Cleveland is looking to bounce back after an abysmal season-opening performance against Baltimore. On a short week, the Browns limp into a matchup versus the Bengals missing three starters on a defense that got gashed by Lamar Jackson. Now, I am not saying that rookie QB Joe Burrow is Lamar Jackson, but he may look like him this week as he'll have A.J. Green, Tyler Boyd, John Ross III and Tee Higgins matched up against a secondary that was questionable heading into Week 1 and has been made thin because of injury.

Both teams come off awful offensive performances. But I can see the Browns being more polished in Week 2, working hard on a short week. The Browns are an emotion-driven team and last week it worked against them with the sulking, but I like it to work fin their favor against the last team they defeated, in Week 14 last season. The one thing the Browns did well last week was run the ball. Take the Browns to cover.

Despite only putting up 13 points, I was impressed by Joe Burrow in his NFL debut and I expect him to have a big day here against a much worse defense in Cleveland. The Browns are incredibly beat up already, with 10 players questionable or worse on the final injury report. That will help an improved Bengals defense slow down a Browns offense that's still finding its feet under Kevin Stefanski. The Bengals have lost 13 straight on the road but are 8-5 ATS in those matchups as well as 8-3 ATS in that stretch when 'dogs of at least four points. Look for them to cash once again in that situation here.

The Heat are both 9-1 SU and ATS in the playoffs. Their only defeat was a three-point OT loss to the Milwaukee Bucks. Miami is playing its best basketball of the season and the team is healthy with a deep bench. The Heat are a tough matchup for the Celtics. These two teams are very similar in style of play, but the Heat dominated the paint in Game 1 and shot 47 percent from the field. Miami has several scorers that can beat opponents from beyond the arc. The Heat will once again will try to push the tempo. I’m not a big fan of the zig-zag theory, but some big action has come in on Boston. Either way, it will be close.

The Islanders did a great job to force a Game 5. Winning this game and forcing a Game 7 is not likely. The Lightning have outplayed the Islanders and had a ton of chances to put them away. But Tampa Bay is getting some terrific play in net and the defensemen are doing a great job of blocking shots. The Lightning are healthy and they will come out with a sense of urgency. Andrei Vasilevskiy must continue his fantastic play in net. Tampa Bay has won 15 of the last 21 meetings.

The Browns were destroyed in their opener by the Ravens. That was no surprise, but I really didn't like what I saw from Baker Mayfield and company. A competitive Bengals team had chances to win their home opener vs. the Chargers. Joe Burrow is just going to get better in each start and he has talented players around him with a solid defense. Cincinnati is 9-2 ATS in the last 11 meetings and 8-3 ATS in its last 11 as a road dog. Cleveland is just 1-4 ATS in its last five vs. AFC teams.

-The Browns got the piss beat out of them last week but I couldn't care less about that performance. The Ravens are going to be on a revenge tour after blowing last season, and they lost at home to the Browns last season. They had far more continuity and took advantage of a newly assembled coaching staff in the Browns. Can write that game off as a mismatch through and through.


As for the matchup at hand, I don't see a single advantage that Cincinnati holds over Cleveland. It's too early to call Burrow better than Baker and Mixon has a bad matchup here. Cincinnati's OLine is atrocious. There's no way around it. And now they have to go up against a top 3 defensive lineman in the NFL in Myles Garrett. He'll have an absolute field day on the edge and be pressuring Burrow to run or potentially make an errant throw as he did vs the Chargers.


Cincinnati's defense did just enough to game the game managing Tyrod Taylor from pulling away last week. I don't think they have that luxury here. Baker has big arm potential and presumably having time to sit in the pocket here is a huge plus for his style of quarterbacking. Chubb won't be locked down as he was by Baltimore as well.


Very difficult for me to see Cincinnati covering this game. Huge game for Stefanski & company to make their mark after being trashed last week by the best team in the AFC. Got the Browns by double digits in this one.
