Analysis: The market LOVES Indy, but this line is out of wack IMO.


Nick Chubb is likely out for the Browns, but they have a more then capable backup in Kareem Hunt. The underrated injury that nobody seems to be talking about is Darius Leonard for the Colts. I would guess that Leonard misses the game this week.


The Colts closed -3.5 at Chicago, a clearly inferior team to the Browns. The Colts deserve a slight upgrade for that win, but the Browns deserve an upgrade off their dominating win against Dallas as well.

Colts a solid winner for us last weekend and it looks like a similar scenario setting up this weekend. Surprised Chicago didn't get more action to bring that line down, but too many people “in the know” knew that Chicago is a pretender and Indy is a solid team. This week, similar situation with the optics of Browns off a big win vs Dallas and coming back home vs a Indy team many feel hasn't played a tough schedule, and Rivers looks as mobile as the goal post. Chubb out for Cleveland will hurt them and Colts likely without linebacker Leonard is not good news for Indy. Metrics come in Tuesday mornings but these 2 teams are so far apart, safe to say this is a play this week. Poor prediction of line movement this year (Inverse of previous yrs) has us playing this game now before most people have had a chance to process wk 4. The value is there and we dont want to see this line move higher like it did last week with Indy and Buffalo. Both were games that just kept moving.

Survivor Pool Pick

Last year, Tierney went 161-94-1 on straight-up picks, beating the vast majority of experts on NFLPickWatch. A renowned sportswriter who's reported from seven Super Bowls, Tierney is an authority on the Survivor Pool format, which calls for picking one team to win each week but never using the same team twice.

In Week 1 -- when hundreds of thousands of Survivor players blew their entire season by picking the Colts, Eagles or 49ers -- Tierney rolled with the Ravens over the Browns. The result: Baltimore 38, Cleveland 6. Then Tierney advanced with the Steelers (Week 2), Colts (Week 3) and Rams (Week 4).

Restaurant buffets have been placed on hold — perhaps forever — amid the pandemic.

But there are enough tasty options in a buffet-like week for NFL survivor pools to help us temporarily forget about the real deal.

On Tuesday morning, all but three of the 15 games on tap carried spreads of at least six points. Three lines were double-digits, with another a half-point away.

It adds up to as many viable selections for survivalists in Week Five as you will find while grabbing your plate and silverware at a food line.

The extra-long list contains lots of appetizing choices. At the same time, few jump out as near certainties.

Hence, our meat-and-potatoes pick: Kansas City.

Why, you ask, not save the Chiefs for a week that is less buffet and more limited menu items?

After all, K.C. is perched at the top of the food chain in the NFL, one of four 4-0 teams. The Chiefs would be favored nowadays at a neutral site — think Super Bowl LV in Tampa — against anyone.

There will be no shortage of opportunities to claim them.

Yet, on closer inspection, many favorites this week are flawed. The only other one that appears semi-safe is Baltimore against Cincinnati, and the Ravens are off many survivalists boards (including mine).

The Chiefs are coming out of a Monday nighter, but short weeks are less of a challenge when the next opponent up is a rival. That is, if Chiefs-Raiders qualifies as a rival still. K.C. has won five in a row over Las Vegas, the last three by margins of 32, 18 and 31.

Vegas has allowed 30-plus points in three of four outings. It has four quarterback sacks, second fewest in the league.

After wrestling with Bill Belichick's feisty defense, Patrick Mahomes will relish the possibility of carving up Jon Gruden's.

Look at it this way: If you have followed the advice of this column, you remain alive in a pool that has thinned out considerably. Why not extend your stay with the best team at your side?

Besides, you won't be considering the Chiefs for awhile. Up next is unbeaten Buffalo on an even shorter week.

Week Five could hardly be more different than the previous one. The schedule offered few appealing choices, and one drew as an almost unprecedented level of support.

The Los Angeles Rams were embraced by a whopping 49.5 of players of pools traced by the website Survivor Grid and 44.4 percent by Run Your Pool.

L.A. was the overwhelming preference partly because Baltimore had been scooped up by survivalists in earlier weeks. Even so, the Ravens got the call by 21.3 percent, according to Run Your Pool, and 20.9 by Survivor Grid.

Each won, one narrowly, one comfortably — L.A. by eight over the New York Giants, Baltimore by 14 over Washington.

The only other team that attracted much interest was Seattle at around 10 percent.

The Seahawks disposed of Miami by eight points, completing a sweep by the primary teams on a satisfying weekend for most pool players.

This is the third trip east for the Rams, which is never easy. The good news is they play a Washington team that isn't very good and struggles on offense. Look for the Rams offense to get back on track after a so-so game last week and win this one easily.

Buffalo Bills (-1) at Tennessee Titans

This is a second straight road game for the Bills, which is always a challenge. The Titans are essentially coming off their bye after the COVID-19 postponement of their game last week. I think the Bills are rolling on offense and the Titans have defensive issues. That plays out as Josh Allen keeps it rolling.

Pick: Bills 30, Titans 27


Philadelphia Eagles (-7) at Pittsburgh Steelers

The Eagles got their first victory on the road last week, but that was against a decimated 49ers team. This Steelers team didn't play last week, so they are rested. Look for the Steelers defense to limit Carson Wentz as the Steelers stay undefeated.

Pick: Steelers 31, Eagles 21


Arizona Cardinals (-7) at New York Jets

The Cardinals are playing consecutive road games on the on the opposite coast, which is tough to do. Unless it's against the Jets. The Jets are awful and Arizona lost a game they shouldn't have last week in Carolina. They get back on track here. The Jets stay winless.

Pick: Cardinals 31, Jets 20


Las Vegas Raiders at Kansas City Chiefs (-13.5)

The Chiefs are playing on a short week, but the offense didn't look good Monday night against the Patriots. It will here. The Raiders have defensive issues, so look for Patrick Mahomes to get back on track in a big way. The Raiders won't keep up.

Pick: Chiefs 36, Raiders 19


Jacksonville Jaguars at Houston Texans (-6)

The Texans fired coach Bill O'Brien this week, so does that give them some life? Romeo Crennel takes over as interim coach. The Jaguars are a mess on defense, so this looks like a game for Deshaun Watson to get it right. I think he lights up Jacksonville. Blowout.

Pick: Texans 36, Jaguars 24


Cincinnati Bengals at Baltimore Ravens (-13)

This will be Joe Burrow against that attacking, blitzing defense of the Ravens. He's been good so far, but can he and his line hold up here? I don't think they can. Lamar Jackson will have a field day against the Bengals defense. This won't be pretty.

Pick: Ravens 37, Bengals 21


Carolina Panthers at Atlanta Falcons (-2.5)

The Falcons season is on the line here after the 0-4 start. They are so banged up on defense that it's hard to imagine them beating anybody. But I think they play like their season is on the line and pull out a division game to get their first victory. The offense clicks.

Miami Dolphins (+8) at San Francisco 49ers

This is a long trip for Miami against a beat-up 49ers team. San Francisco might have Jimmy Garoppolo back in this one. That will be good enough to get a victory they have to have. Miami won't keep up with Ryan Fitzpatrick this week, but they will hang around.

Pick: 49ers 28, Dolphins 23


New York Giants at Dallas Cowboys (-9.5)

Is this the week the Cowboys get it going. They have the perfect tonic in a Giants team that hasn't won yet and is playing out on the road for a second straight week. The Cowboys offense has been good, but the defense is a disaster. I think they pick it up here after being called out all week. It's a big number, but I will lay it.

Pick: Cowboys 35, Giants 20


Indianapolis Colts (-1.5) at Cleveland Browns

This is one of the better games of the week. The Colts defense has played well so far, but this will be the toughest challenge they have faced. I think the Browns running game without Nick Chubb will be fine with Kareem Hunt. Even so, I think the Colts come into Cleveland and beat the Browns with their defense getting it done.

Pick: Colts 21, Browns 17


Denver Broncos (+11.5) at New England Patriots

The Patriots could have Cam Newton back here, which would be huge. The quarterbacks weren't good in the loss to the Chiefs without him. Denver won at the Jets last Thursday, but struggled to do so. They will struggle here as well — no matter who plays quarterback for the Patriots.

Pick: Patriots 30, Broncos 20


Minnesota Vikings (+7) at Seattle Seahawks

The Vikings salvaged their season for the time being by beating the Texans on the road. This Seattle offense is much better than that one and Russell Wilson will have big day against the Minnesota defense. But Kirk Cousins and Dalvin Cook will keep up against a bad Seattle defense. It will be tight.

The Vikings got back on track last week, but it took playing a mess of a franchise that fired its coach/GM after the game to do so. When the dust settled, the Vikings came away with an eight-point win thanks largely to the success of the running game. But the Seahawks rank third in yards per rush allowed and are largely beatable through the air. Maybe that means Adam Thielen and Justin Jefferson will have a big day, but I can't see the Minnesota offense keeping up with Russell Wilson and Co., who get to play a Vikings defense that ranks 30th in net yards per pass attempt. The line moved 2.5 points from the lookahead toward Minnesota, but I don't see sense in that.

Both Houston and Jacksonville have struggled to limit opposing passing games through four weeks. Jacksonville has allowed a 30th-ranked 8.3 yards per pass attempt while Houston sits 21st on the list with 7.4 yards per pass attempt allowed. This is a bad sign for under bettors Sunday, as the Jags and Texans both rate top five in the NFL in pass rate, with over 64 percent of their plays ending in a pass.

Not only do these teams pass frequently, but they do so effectively. I think the wrong team is favored here. That Colts defense has looked awesome, but Indy's schedule has been pretty suspect. Can it get any worse in Big D where there is no D? In the last 3 weeks Dallas has allowed 39, 38 and 49 points but it has to be pointed out that was against two very good offenses Seattle and Atlanta and one up and coming offense in the Cleveland Browns. The NY Giants offense isn’t going to scare anyone as they seem to be getting worse 16 in week 1, then 13 then 9 and 9 again last week. Don’t over react to the Giants cover in LA last week as the Rams were in a bad spot having played back to back games on the East Coast then back at home to play the winless Giants after their last second loss to Buffalo. That loss to Buffalo was extremely draining as the Rams had rallied from a 28-3 deficit to actually take the lead with Under 2 minutes to play before losing in the final 15 seconds. The Rams clearly had a hangover effect last week and was flat. Dallas drilled the Giants in both meetings last year and I don’t see where the Giants have improved enough to narrow the gap. The Dallas offense has been almost unstoppable this year. Actually the ones that have stopped has been Dallas themselves as in the last 3 games the Cowboys have 9 TO’s. Dallas has scored 40, 31 and 38 points in their last 3 games even being on the wrong end of a 9-1 TO margin. Think how many points they would have had they not turned the ball over. The Giants defense allowed 26 points to a rusty Ben Roethlisberger in week 1 and 36 points to San Francisco with a back up QB. The only teams that didn’t score big on them was Chicago with Trubisky and last week against a flat Rams team. Dallas needs to take out some penned up frustration and given how bad the Dallas D has been even Mike McCarthy is smart enough not to take his foot off the gas with a lead and when the Giants fall behind by 2 scores and are forced to throw the ball that’s when things can get real ugly for the Giants and 2nd Year QB Daniel Jones. DALLAS 38-20. TAKE DALLAS as my 5% NFL HIGH GAME OF THE MONTH.

Lose this game and their season is suddenly very much so up in the air with the Seahawks/Rams/Cardinals all above them in their division.

Dolphins are a public dog this week, and that draws me to the 49ers even harder. I suppose most people remember seeing the lowly Eagles beat them in their own stadium and suddenly undervalue SF but hey.. I did call that Philly outright win after all. Wasn't that surprising to me.

Miami has to travel cross country, San Fran returns Jimmy G, and are in desperate need of a BIG win to turn the tide of their season and boost morale after being riddled by injuries. Miami may return Byron Jones here but that doesn't bother me, nobody on Miami's defense can come close to containing Kittle. San Fran takes this game big.

I think the common perception of them is they're 3-0 and had the #1 defense last year and Ben is back so on and so forth. The fact is this.. their 3 wins have come from opponents with a combined record of 1-11. That 1 win was the Broncos who beat the JETS, arguably the worst team in the NFL. Even then, Pitt only won their games by margins of 10, 5, and 7. Nothing special and two of those were at home.

Not sure having the additional week is that big of a deal at this point in the season and Philly finally has something to be mildly proud of with a huge win over San Francisco last week and a much needed win at that. I don't think the Eagles have any fantastic matchups by any means in this game but it's simply a contrarian play fading public sentiment towards this game grabbing a TD cushion against a team that has yet to really prove anything.

Long-time readers of my picks know I usually shy away from double-digit spreads ... unless it involves the Chiefs. Not only do I believe Kansas City's defense is underrated, but this Las Vegas defense has been a sieve so far this season, allowing 30 points per game. KC has not allowed more than 20, it's playing at home, and it needs to shake off the cobwebs from a mostly ugly game against New England last week. The Chiefs have been dominant over the Raiders in recent meetings, and Andy Reid owns Jon Gruden. I thought this might get to -10, but close to kickoff, we'll take it here. Kansas City should win by two touchdowns.

The Panthers defense is really coming together, and it did a great job against two offenses (Chargers, Cardinals) that have otherwise been solid in recent weeks. The Panthers offense is also outgaining the Falcons in yards per play, and with the Falcons giving up 30-plus in every game so far, I think we can reasonably say the Panthers are the better team here. Then you come to Dan Quinn, who is 20-35 ATS as a favorite in his career and appears to be playing out the string at 0-4 until a coaching change is made. Carolina, on the other hand, is a team on the rise that has a chance to be tied for first place after this game.

Will the Texans be extra motivated after Bill O'Brien was fired? It's unclear, but there were already reasons to believe they could handle a Jaguars team whose Week 1 win over the Colts is looking like an aberration. The Jags lost to the mighty Dolphins and Bengals the last two weeks by a combined 26 points, and now they'll be without Josh Allen and possibly a few other starters. A coach's firing hasn't historically helped teams in their next game, but the Texans are healthier and more talented, and they may even have a little extra fire. Lay the points.

The Chiefs have a defense. They haven't allowed more than 20 points in a game this season. When the Chiefs haven't looked like their dominant selves (Chargers, Pats) it occurred because the offense was slowed a bit, but that isn't likely to happen against the Raiders, who have the NFL's third worst defense by Football Outsiders' DVOA. The Chiefs won their last three games against the Raiders by a combined 103-22, and I don't think Vegas' D will be able to keep this one close either. Lay the points.

Framber Valdez was 5-3 with a 3.57 ERA this season and he has allowed just two earned runs in 12 IP this postseason. He has never faced the Rays in his career. Blake Snell was 4-2 with a 3.24 ERA this season but he was touched up for four earned runs in five innings against the Yankees. However, he did pitch 5.2 innings scoreless in his start against the Blue Jays. He has a career 2.81 ERA in the postseason but he has never gone deeper than 5.2 innings. During the regular season, the Astros were ranked 22nd in the league in OPS against lefties at .702, but they have an .846 OPS in the postseason against lefties. If the Astros are up, I wouldn’t be surprised if they put one of their bulk starters to close the game. This should be a 50-50 game.

The Falcons on back home after a short week and get to face the division rival Panthers as ATL still looks for their first win and Dan Quinn is fired coach walking, still no McCaffrey for Carolina and the Falcons have the league's second worst pass defense....before the additional injuries and short week. They have a +25% DVOA against the pass, but the interesting thing is, they are very respectable, almost great against the run so far...with a -20% defensive rush DVOA...and each goes more toward its respective directions when you remove the adjustment factor.
Atlanta opposing QBs on the season are 121/167 for 1415 yards and a 13/2 TD/INT ratio and on a similar front the Falcons allow the most fantasy points to QBs and the next closest team is 6 points behind!

Cleveland Browns +1.5 vs. Indianapolis Colts
I think the wrong team is favored here. That Colts defense has looked awesome, but Indy's schedule has been pretty suspect. The Browns just scored 49 on the Cowboys, and before you remind me how bad the Cowboys defense is, Dallas had actually been solid against the run heading into that game. The Browns O-line is just dominant right now, which makes me worry less about injuries at running back. Meanwhile, the Colts offense is not impressive at all, ranking 22nd in points per drive, 30th in third-down success rate and 28th in red-zone success rate. If that strong Browns D-line can get some pressure on Philip Rivers, I think this is game over, especially with the Colts ranking 32nd in yards per carry.

Seattle Seahawks -7 vs. Minnesota Vikings
The Vikings got back on track last week, but it took playing a mess of a franchise that fired its coach/general manager after the game to do so. When the dust settled, the Vikings came away with an eight-point win thanks largely to the success of the running game. But the Seahawks rank third in yards per rush allowed and are largely beatable through the air. Maybe that means Adam Thielen and Justin Jefferson will have a big day, but I can't see the Minnesota offense keeping up with Russell Wilson & Co., who get to play a Vikings defense that ranks 30th in net yards per pass attempt. The line moved 2.5 points from the lookahead toward Minnesota, but I don't see sense in that.

Arizona Cardinals -7 at New York Jets
So this line was Cardinals -8 on the lookahead, and the Jets lost their starting quarterback. So now it's ... -7? What kind of sense does that make? You can only explain it if you think the struggling Cardinals offense from last week is indicative of future performance, but Arizona knows it got too cute going horizontal instead of vertical. That shouldn't be an issue against this porous Jets secondary, and I'm expecting a big game out of the Cardinals offense. I don't expect a whole lot from Joe Flacco, even if the rest of the offense is starting to get healthy. Arizona gets right with a big win.

Los Angeles Rams -7 at Washington Redskins
I don't think Kyle Allen is going to make a huge difference to the Washington offense, especially with Dwayne Haskins coming off his best game of the year and still losing by double digits. While the Washington defense feels like it's been solid, this is a team that has given up 30-plus points in three straight. The Rams played the ugliest game possible last week and still beat a similarly awful team by eight points, so a cover is still on the table if the Rams should struggle. But don't worry about the west-to-east travel -- this is already the Rams' third 1 p.m. ET east coast game this season, and they should be 2-0 in them if not for a highly questionable pass interference call in the Bills loss. I think the Rams roll.
