I have the Bucs rated as the better team, but I only make the game Bucs -3.5. The Saints are the NFL's third best road team ATS since 2017, going 18-9 ATS with a 5.2 PPG cover margin.

Analysis: I have these two teams rated equal, and with HFA being worth 1-1.5, clear value on the Giants getting a field goal.


Washington theoretically has the rest advantage, as they are off a bye and the Giants played on Monday Night (http://www.therxforum.com/x-apple-data-detectors://1), but that hasn’t been much of an advantage in recent memory. Since 2003, teams in the Giants situation are 25-10-1 ATS.

This is going to be considered the square teaser of the week, but we get the opportunity to fade one historically bad team, and another team that was projected to be historically bad coming into the year, and very well might be with rookie quarterback Jake Luton at the helm.


I get a lot of Ben Dinucci vibes with Jake Luton. Luton is a quarterback totally unprepared to play in the NFL who got limited reps in the offseason to due the pandemic. There's no possible way he's ready to step into the NFL and be a starting quarterback in the NFL, let alone be a capable starter for one of the worst supporting casts in the NFL. Luton was below average for draft prospects in completion %, yards per attempt, completion % vs pressure, and mobility. Jacksonville very well might have begun the tank for Lawrence strategy that we expected them to have coming into the season.


Sam Darnold appears to not be 100% healthy, and this Patriots team has had his number throughout his career. Darnold has a pathetic 4.2 YPA in his career against the Patriots. An Adam Gase led offense against a Bill Belichick led defense is about as big of a coaching mismatch as you can possibly ask for. The Patriots are not even close to the Patriots of old, but it hasn't gotten to the point where they should struggle against a Jets team that has lost all seven of their games this season by 8 points or more.


Both teams we are taking did not sell off players at the deadline, while the Jags and Jets seem prepared to make the organizational strategy of preparing for next years draft.

That’s 4 key division games in 5 weeks with a cross country road game to face a AFC opponent. I Understand that all games are important but non-conference road games are the least important on a teams schedule when it comes to tiebreakers. Buffalo is coming off a big game of their own but winning last week even though it was a tight win they slayed the dragon beating the mighty Patriots. Yes the Pats are just a shell of their former selves but for Buffalo it was a huge win that will give them the confidence knowing that they are now the kings of the division. Buffalo ranks #19 defensively in YPP allowed while Seattle is 28th. Give me the better defense getting points and I’m there. BUFFALO 31-24. TAKE BUFFALO as my 4% NFL UPSET SHOCKER.

Kansas City is coming off back to back blowout wins but if you dig deeper you see they were outgained by Denver 2 weeks as Denver killed themselves with 4 TO’s and last week they played the Jets do we need to say anymore? Point is Yes KC is good but margins of victory the last two weeks is somewhat misleading. Now let’s look at Carolina who has had an extra 3 Days to prepare for this game having played on Thursday. Matt Ruhle is doing a good job with this young team as they have been competitive in every game but one this year as they have lost by 10 or less in 7 of 8 games. Kansas City has their bye week next week then they have their big Revenge game with the Raiders after that. If I told you that Kansas City is #4 team offensively at 6.4 YPP that would not surprise you but what would is Carolina is #8 at 6.2 YPP. Defensively KC is #11 at 5.5 YPP while Carolina is #16 at 5.7. Yes KC is better in every offensive and defensive category but not by that much and after the last 2 easy wins Kansas City is feeling all Fat N Sassy. Carolina is a team that is too good to take lightly and with 3 extra days to prepare I have to grab the points here. KANSAS CITY 31-28 (Take CAROLINA +PTS) as my 3% NFL PLAY.

Analysis: You can try to hold out for a +7 but I don't think we see it.




Yes, the bears have offensive line injuries, but the titans are dealing with defensive injuries themselves and also still dearly miss LT Taylor Lewan. The titans rank 31st in the NFL in sack percentage and lack the pass rush to be able to take advantage of the Bears offensive line.


The titans also lack the defense capable of putting teams away and winning by margin. They struggled to win outright against the Broncos, Jags, Vikings, Texans, and lost outright to the Bengals. The titans were +3 in turnover margin against Pittsburgh, yet they still failed to beat them. This is an overrated team that could easily be under 500 for the season if not for some fortunate late game endings.


Chicago is also an overrated team with a winning record, but the market is more then accounting for it. I make this game Bears +4, giving us clear value in taking Chicago!

When you're looking for advice on whom to pick on gameday in the NFL, nobody beats R.J. White. In fact, if you placed $100 on each of R.J. White's NFL spread picks since the start of the 2017 season, you'd be up more than $2,300. Smart bettors tail his selections.

In the last five years the stats guru, whose picks are coveted by fans everywhere, has cashed huge twice in the world's most prestigious handicapping tournament, the Westgate Las Vegas SuperContest. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, White did not travel to Las Vegas to enter this year's contest. But he is still offering his five weekly SuperContest picks to SportsLine members.

"While the Titans are excelling on offense, with great third-down and red-zone numbers to go along with a great DVOA, the Bears can match them on each front, ranking sixth in DVOA and first in both third-down and red-zone success rate," White tells SportsLine. On the other side of the ball, the Titans' defense is awful, especially on third down, where they have the worst success rate of any team through seven games in the last 30 years. The Bears offense isn't good, but it's good enough to have some success here and keep this one close, perhaps with a chance to win."

White also is taking a road underdog that "makes plenty of sense" in one of the Week 9 games. Which team it is may surprise you. Anyone who uses this team could hit it BIG.

Here are White's picks and analysis:

Seattle Seahawks (-3) at Buffalo Bills
The Bills have not been as impressive as their 6-2 record suggests, particularly lately. The defense posted a pair of good games against limited offenses over the last two weeks but still ranks 22nd in DVOA against the pass, and that's not going to get it done against Russell Wilson. The Seahawks also have a bad pass defense, but Josh Allen has been incredibly inconsistent and has cooled off considerably from his run during the first four weeks. I think the Bills will have to catch some breaks to win this game, and though we're not laying less than three on the SuperContest line, I still like the Seahawks to continue their ATS dominance in 1 p.m. ET games.

Carolina Panthers (+10.5) at Kansas City Chiefs
Teddy Bridgewater is 19-4 ATS as an underdog in his career and 17-3 on the road. Doubt him in this matchup at your own peril. The Chiefs thrashed the worst team in the league but haven't been firing on all cylinders lately aside from that, and their struggles defending the run line up well with a Carolina offense ready to welcome Christian McCaffrey back into the fold. The Panthers have lost by more than one score just once all year, and that was thanks to turning the ball over four times. Trust Teddy to protect the ball and keep the Panthers close.

Chicago Bears (+5.5) at Tennessee Titans

Indianapolis Colts (+2.5) vs. Baltimore Ravens
Baltimore's success on offense has been due to its elite run game, as Lamar Jackson hasn't been as effective passing the ball as he was last year. But the problem for Baltimore is that the Colts bring a great defense into this matchup, one that not only defends the pass well but also ranks second in yards per rush allowed and fifth in DVOA. I do worry about the Colts offense being able to have consistent success against an equally great Ravens defense, but with several players on the unit having to miss time this week due to COVID-19 protocols, there's at least a chance Baltimore is less locked in on Sunday. I liked the Colts at this number anyway, so consider that the cherry on top.

New Orleans Saints (+4.5) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Bucs defense did a great job limiting the Saints offense in Week 1, but New Orleans was able to prevail thanks in large part to a Bucs offense that didn't seem to be on the same page yet. While that's no longer the case, I do think this will still be a close game, and taking the points at this number makes plenty of sense. The Bucs blitz a ton, but Drew Brees is second only to Patrick Mahomes in passer rating when blitzed since 2019. With his weapons back, Brees should have success and turn this into a shootout where they can cover even if New Orleans defense struggles.

The Jets have scored 36 points in their last five games combined vs. the Pats, but it gets worse; New York has scored just one offensive TD in that stretch. Bang the Under here.

And while Washington scored 25 in its last game by running the ball down Dallas' throat, they'd scored 20 or less in five straight before that. The last meeting between these two paced Under the whole way despite a late fumble return TD. Expect the same here.

The Chargers offense is led by rookie Justin Herbert's big right arm, and the total has gone Over in L.A.'s last four games. Herbert's offense ranks 11th best in DVOA.

Washington had this game won many times over in their first meeting, but QB Kyle Allen couldn't protect the football. I expect another low-scoring game between these two and the reason why I like the Giants is due to their defense. That has been the biggest improvement I've seen so far. Offensively, they can move the ball and if QB Daniel Jones can stop turning it over, they can start getting more touchdowns. Look for a bevy of field goals in this one with the Giants outkicking Washington

Arizona is a chunk-play offense, meaning if the Cardinals aren't getting splash plays, it's tough for them to move the ball on a consistent basis. However, they are able to create those plays very often in ballgames and, defensively, we've seen them become much better. Miami is a bit more methodical and will need a breakout game from Tua Tagovailoa in order to keep the pace, despite what should be a solid defensive effort.

The Rams ran 92 plays to Miami's 48. Miami's offense averaged only 3.0 yards per play, and Tagovailoa completed only 12 of his 22 passes for 4.2 yards per attempt. The Dolphins defense has been great against the pass (it ranks 3rd in DVOA), it's the worst rush defense in the NFL (32nd in DVOA). So now a Dolphins team that can't stop the run and has a rookie QB making his first career road start will be facing an Arizona offense that ranks fourth in the NFL in rushing DVOA.

Miami won yesterday but not getting much respect for the victory. Tua not getting any love today by not being able to cross the 100yrd passing mark in his debut. Rams were #7 in NFL on D coming into the game, so throwing Tua to the wolves and coming out on top looks OK by me. Miami didn't impress, but they did what they had to do. What about the Miami defense? They held the Rams in check, and many teams have found that to be a difficult task. In fact, the Model actually has Miami as a better defense than that #7 Rams D mentioned above. Miami gets a little relief by facing an AZ defense that is simply just ok, and the AZ offense is rated just behind that Rams team Miami just beat. Weather doesn't look like an issue, AZ is off the bye, but Miami will be rested. Both teams are identically rated injury wise, but 2 Cardinals tested positive for Covid, lets see what happens there. The math model is produced on Tuesdays, but its clear that tomorrow will just verify what is already clear, Miami is getting more points than they should.

Sunday update

This was looking like great value when this line was dipping below 4 this week, but now its 6. These teams have been very good to us this year, as we have been on the right side of these teams this year. Now they face each other. Nothing has changed with this game that warrants this move, IMO. Metrics solidly on the Miami side of this still, even after that Tuesday update. In fact, the data strengthened a bit. Miami has been playing very well defensively, and that's where this game needs to be won. A shootout wont favor the Fins. Hate having games with 2 Play On teams, but looking forward to this game.
