Analysis: Short and sweet


New England is one of the more obvious dead nut under teams i. the NFL. This season, they are 4-9 to the under and since last season, they are 11-19 to the under. It’s easy to envision the Patriots game plan. This is the worst passing offense in the entire NFL going against one of the better pass defenses in the NFL, and any path to success for the Patriots offense is reliant on them running the ball and not turning the ball over (and shortening this game).


Miami is potentially without the following offensive weapons.

To go along with a insane amount of injuries, the Miami offense has been amongst the worst in the NFL since Tua has taken over. Bill Belichick has an extensive history of shutting down rookie quarterbacks, with stud rookie Justin Herbert being his latest victim just two weeks ago.


Considering the Dolphins injuries, these could be the two least talented offenses in the NFL. It’s a low total, but I expect this number to drop even more if the Dolphins offense gets bad news injury report wise.

Didn't my write up last week call betting the Colts a broken record? Houston is a mess. Losing players left and right the last 2 weeks. I think the last 3-4 times we have bet the Colts, it was painful and with doubt. This is the 1st time in a while that I feel no pain with a Colts Wager. That does make me paranoid, honestly. The Rivers" bashers have gone silent as he quietly has become the #1 QB at hitting his targets. He did much of his work this season with Hilton dinged up and not much of a help,….until recently. Colts really have the the cylinders firing again offensively. I don't think anyone wants to meet them in the Playoffs, as they play tough, and have excellent coaching and veteran players scattered everywhere. They will face the 4th worst Defense, which lost more players. Indy back up to #6 on offense by my ratings. Indy had a few games recently where they gave up a ton of points against GB and TN, even with those performances, they rate #4 overall defense. Houston, known for their offense in the past, is a shell of their former self, Who's left? They should pull Watson and preserve his health for that longterm contract he signed off season. The mediocre offense is only #20, and much of the season they were healthy enough on offense to be effective. I have no idea how this line sits at 7. I'm not going to get greedy on this one and see if it dips. Late season we all have to worry about playoff teams resting players and just happy to have wins. The yapping dog teams can find a way to just loosen up and do a bunch of crazy schemes and play calling, with nothing to lose. Indy is a revolving door of injuries and people coming back, but they have the key components to easily beat this dpread. We just have to hope they are interested in separation. Metrics put this line closer to 14, than 7.

Ive been working this game so much this week, it dawned on me that I had no clue where the offense was going to come from. Have to take our chances here that points will be at a premium. Miami ranks #3 in my metric model and The Patriots are at #6 somehow. These teams have a plethora of week teams on their schedules, but nevertheless., Nobody associates either of these teams as high octane, as they both have had subpar offenses as of late. Both quarterbacks are asked to do more than their fair share to contribute.

The Dallas Cowboys have been one of the worst teams in the NFL since losing starting quarterback Dak Prescott to a season ending injury. The Cowboys have went just 2-6 straight-up in those 8 games with the average margin of defeat being by 19 points per game. One of their wins came against Minnesota in a game the Cowboys scored the game winning touchdown with just over 1:30 left in the contest while also converting a 4th down and 6 to keep the drive alive. Their other win was came last game against the hapless Cincinnati Bengals by a 30-7 score but don't be fooled by that result. The Bengals were missing their starting quarterback in that game plus they fumbled on EACH of their first 3 possessions of the game leading to 17 Cowboys points. The Dallas offense failed to even gain 300 yards in the contest.
The San Francisco 49ers have had a disappointing 5-8 season so far in 2020 following a Super Bowl appearance last year. Don't be fooled by their record this is still a decent team. The Niners have been decimated with injuries this year and to make matters worse they have had to face the hardest schedule in the NFL (per Football Outsiders). In fact if the season were to end today the 49ers would have played 9 of their 13 games against teams against teams in the post-season including each one of their last six games. When San Francisco has faced off against non-playoff teams like this do in this one here against Dallas, they are 3-1 overall this year with an average win margin being by 24 points in those contests. The Niners lost 23-15 last week to Washington but they were the better of the two teams in that game as Washington scored two defensive touchdowns and San Francisco put up more than 150 yards of offense then Washington in the game. Many of the 49ers players were upset after the ugly loss and I expect them to bring their best effort to this one.

Jalen Hurts is making his first road start. I know the Eagles won last week against the Saints, but it was a day their defensive line couldn’t get any pressure and remember they were not with a typical QB as Drew Brees was still out. The Cardinals will be able to move the ball with the duel threat ability of Kyler Murray. The key in this game is the Eagles Secondary. I have never heard of some of these cornerbacks playing due to injury. Kyler Murray will role out of the pocket and with time for his receivers to break open they will absolutely light up this secondary. We have that going for us and again it’s Jalen Hurts first road game. This Eagles Offensive Line has been banged up this entire year and I would be shocked if they can stay in this game. Take the Cardinals.

New England has won its past nine games against starting rookie quarterbacks. The last rookie quarterback to beat head coach Bill Belichick was Geno Smith on October 20, 2013. Since that loss, Belichick has created misery for the following rookie quarterbacks: Derek Carr (Raiders), Marcus Mariota (Titans), Cody Kessler (Browns), Jared Goff (Rams), Deshaun Watson (Texans), Josh Allen (Bills), Sam Darnold (Jets), Daniel Jones (Giants) and Justin Herbert (Chargers).

In the two instances in which Belichick was installed as an underdog against a rookie quarterback, the Patriots won both games by a combined score of 85-23. Belichick is a profitable 10-4 ATS in his last fourteen showdowns with rookie quarterbacks, limiting the opposing offenses to just 11.8 points per game. The most recent rookie quarterback to face Belichick was Justin Herbert in Week 13, and he averaged a pathetic 3.9 yards per pass attempt with two interceptions.
Miami ranks 21st in offensive efficiency this season and the unit is averaging just 288 yards per game under quarterback Tua Tagovaila. Since Tagovaila took over as a starter in Week 8, the Dolphins have tallied 170 points in seven games. However, 51 percent of those points have come by way of either (a) special teams (b) defensive touchdowns or (c) drives following an opponent turnover. The Dolphins rank 28th in net yards per play, which indicates that they rely on turnovers and/or short fields to score points.

The matchup is extremely favorable for New England's run-heavy attack. In fact, the Dolphins are 21st in the league in defensive success rate against the run despite playing the fifth easiest schedule of opposing rush offenses. New England owns the NFL's fifth-best rushing offense (147.5 yards per game) and garnered 217 yards on the ground in its season-opener against the Dolphins.

Quarterback Cam Newton had a season-high 15 rushes attempts (75 yards and two scores) in the Week meeting, and I expect a similar output on Sunday. Consider that Miami yielded 106 rushing yards and one score to the only other mobile quarterback they faced this season - Arzona's Kyle Murray. New England will be motivated by the fact that they are underdogs in this series for the first time since 2013, and it's the first time Miami has been favored by more than one point over the Patriots since 2003.

Finally, Belichick is a profitable 7-2 SU and 8-1 ATS following a game in which the Patriots scored seven or fewer points, including 5-0 ATS on the road and 5-0 ATS as an underdog. With Belichick standing at 18-6 SU and ATS following a loss of 14 or more points, including 7-0 ATS as an underdog, take the Patriots and invest with confidence.

After abandoning designed runs with quarterback Kyle Murray for several weeks due to a nagging injury, head coach Kliff Kingsbury called Murray's number thirteen times against the Giants last week. Arizona's offense thrives when Murray uses his legs and I expect Kingsbury to continue calling designed runs now that his quarterback is healthy.
The Cardinals' offense is 14th in the league in both Total DVOA and Pass DVOA, and those numbers should improve against an injury-riddled Philadelphia secondary that is without both starting cornerbacks and three-fourths of its original secondary.
Specifically, Philadelphia cornerback Darius Slay did not travel with the team and is out with a concussion, while Avonte Maddox and Rodney McLeod were recently placed on injured reserve with knee injuries. The loss of Slay is particularly devastating in that he is usually tasked with covering the opponent's best receiver and will be replaced by reserves like Kevon Seymour and practice squad players in safety Blake Countess and cornerback Jameson Houston.

Philadelphia's backups allowed 8.0 yards per pass play and a 50% success rate against the Saints last week and will be exploited once again by an Arizona offense that employs four wide receivers a league-high 22% of the time. Wider receiver DeAndre Hopkins is averaging 2.29 yards per route run, 7th best among qualified receivers, and is primed to have a career day against a patchwork Philadelphia secondary.

Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts has reinvigorated the Eagles' offense, producing 56 yards on fourteen designed runs while also scrambling for 50 yards on four carries. The Eagles possess a top 5 rush offense despite playing the 4th most difficult schedule of opposing defenses and should move the chains against an Arizona defense that is 21st in the league in success rate allowed to opposing offenses since Week 10 when interior lineman Corey Peters was injured.

Finally, both offenses play at a fast pace, ranking second and fourth, respectively, in offensive pace (snap to snap) and first and second, respectively, in no-huddle rate. Take the OVER and invest with confidence.
