Jerry Shottenkirk: My Late Pick 4 Ticket Sunday at Gulfstream January 2, 2021 | By Jerry Shottenkirk
The end of the first weekend of 2021 is a prime time to jump in at Gulfstream Park, which presents a strong Late Pick 4 challenge.

The Late Pick 4 on Sunday is stakes free but includes some quality claiming races that require leaving on the handicapping thinking cap for an extra minute or two.

I’m firing a $60 suggested ticket on the first weekend of the new year in Hallandale Beach. Here’s a look at how I see it:

Race 8 (3:42 p.m. ET, claiming)

JANUARY WON was claimed last time by Sweezey, and that’s usually a good thing. Won the last time he was at two turns and can bring the heat late in the game.

STARSHIP ARAMIS tried going 1.5 miles on turf last time and is back to a much, MUCH better set of circumstances. Loves to be on the front end and could take them to the wire.

ICONIC was claimed last out by Johnson stable and while he lacks consistency, he has some starts that would make him difficult to beat if he has a flashback.

SURF SHACK takes a class drop and the Winebaugh barn is capable of scoring over this strip.

Race 9 (4:13 p.m. ET, claiming)

MYAMANOI represents the Gargan barn, which is close to having a 50-percent success rate. Was a fast closing fourth in the Dania Beach Stakes here last year.

SHINING THROUGH ran on for third last time and has been on the board in both of his local starts. Can make up ground.

MAX’S CAUSEWAY was second last time when claimed by Maker and gets Irad Ortiz up for the first attempt for the new connections. Capable of showing late interest.

Race 10 (4:45 p.m. ET, claiming)

WELL DEFINED cruised to an easy win in a race that came off the dirt and now stays with main track. Troublesome out front.

BLESSED JOURNEY crushed N3L rivals last out and two back found it out for a win. Was claimed last out by Perez and fits here.

LIKE YOU has been with much better and this drop in class could be enough to get him home in fine fashion.

GLORY OF FLORIDA has done a lot of good over the track was claimed last time by Cazares when he ran fourth. Does his best in these one-turn mile races.

LUSITANO ran two strong races just prior to an off-the-board finish on turf. Stretches out and can be a forward factor from the first stride.

Race 11 (5:17 p.m. ET, maiden claiming)

ON A TOUR wasn’t a factor in her only start, which was in a MSW at Woodbine and his chances will improve with the start to his credit as well as additional distance. Has had several works since then and is likely to do much better here.

MISSION POSSIBLE lost a photo at this level last out in her first around two turns. Was outnodded last time and might be able to finish the job.

50-cent Late Pick 4 Sunday at Gulfstream Park:
8) #3 January Won, #9 Starship Aramis, #10 Iconic, #11 Surf Shack.
9) #1 Myamanoi, #9 Shining Through, #11 Max’s Causeway.
10) #1 Well Defined, #2 Blessed Journey, #4 Like You, #5 Glory of Florida, #6 Lusitano.
11) #3 On a Tour, #7 Mission Possible
50-cent Pick Four: 3-9-10-11 with 1-9-11 with 1-2-4-5-6 with 3-7 ($60).

Al Cimaglia: Cal Expo Pick 4 Analysis January 3, 2021 | By Al Cimaglia
Cal Expo has a 12-race card set to go on their first Sunday night of racing of the meet. The 0.20 Pick 4 begins in Race 9. The sequence has a $25,000 guaranteed pool and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 9

4-Bobs Time (5-1)-Cutting's choice over #2 has been in form and should benefit from a dry track and. Best to respect, has beaten this kind recently.
5-Danzig To Dharma (5-1)-Has had its own way for the most part versus mares and can beat this group if there is an honest pace. Can start slowly, so needs to get off the gate alertly and then find live cover to take a picture tonight.
6-Cut A Rug (6-1)-Even effort in last 2 and previously notched 2 wins with Plano steering and he is back tonight. Looking for a better try at a square price.
7-Bizys Beatle (5-1)-Drew off against NW1 with a 55.4 back half on a "good" track and now steps up. Has won 3 out of 7 on an off track and was bet down to 1/5. Using, but hoping isn't over bet.

Race 10

2-Cantholdmebackmack (3-1)-Bet down to 6/5 in last, was driven aggressively and the trip took its toll. Roland is back and should be in the mix with a smooth journey.
5-Lincoln (6-1)-Ten-year-old does not win much anymore but he has hit the basement and can be a player here at a solid price. Did roll late versus $4k claimers in last but needs to avoid a sluggish start.
7-Hi Ho's Little Rev (9/5)-Last win came on 9/18 at Haw versus NW1000L4. Drops and has been in too tough. Can beat this bunch and is hard to leave off this ticket but offers no value at 9/5.

Race 11

1-Gravelsinmytravel (7/2)-Drops into a good spot in 2nd start off the bench. Svendsen can get a good early seat and could get sucked around for 2nd win in the last 18 starts.
3-Frwil Dakota Sven (6-1)-Hasn't had much success since coming off the bench. Makes 4th start and takes a good drop-in class after breaking in last. Price should be right if can rebound with a top try as Cutting takes the lines.
5-Buzz Light (9/5)-Buzz broke stride on 12/12 and hasn't looked good since. Should enjoy the company and there is some risk to leave out, but at 9/5 doesn't offer any value.

Race 12

6-West Central Beach (6-1)-Comes off a tough trip but does try hard. Should offer a square price and even though is trip dependent Cutting can find live cover. Using and thinking the fractions could be lively and that should help.
7-Trump Train (4-1)-Loses Plano as he drives his pupil #2. That might help the price and the start will be key. If J Chappell can put in play early chances for success go up.
8-Joltin Joe (6-1)-Had a troubled trip in last but this will be the 2nd tour of duty for Roland and the journey should be smoother. Only 1-14 in 2020 but last race was the best effort in a while and that was coming off a judge's scratch.

0.20 Pick 4

4,5,6,7/2,5,7/1,3,5/6,7,8
Total Bet=$21.60

Jeff Siegel's Santa Anita Analysis/Wagering Strategies - 1/3/20 January 3, 2021
Jeff Siegel’s Santa Anita Analysis & Wagering Strategies

Specifically designed for the rolling exotic player, Jeff Siegel’s “Daily Analysis and Wagering Strategies” isolates those horses that should be included in daily doubles, pick-3s, pick-4s, pick-5s, and the pick-6.
*
The selections are posted at 6:00 a.m. and updated later in the morning to reflect late scratches and changes (approximately 10:30 a.m.).
*
*
Grade Descriptions: Grade A=Highest degree of confidence; Grade B=Solid Play. Grade C=Least preferred or pass; Grade X=probable winner but likely at odds too short to play.

RACE 1: Post: 12:30 PT Grade: B
Use: 4-Clayton Delaney; 8-Kakistocracy

Forecast: Clayton Delaney is a progressive gelding with rising numbers and continues to impress in a. m. drills. He’s most comfortable on the lead but could settle just off the pace if the situation dictates. With another forward move today, the P. D’Amato-trained son of Grazen should be hard to beat. Kakistocracy has form from last year over this course and distance that charts well with this group; the question though is whether he’s fit enough off the bench in his first outing in 11 months. The works look pretty good but the foundation may not be complete. Preference on top goes to Clayton Delaney but both should be included in rolling exotic play.
*
*
RACE 2: Post: 1:03 PT Grade: X
Single: 4-Bye Bye Miss Pie

Forecast: Bye Bye Miss Pie is listed 4/5 on the morning line for a reason – she’s trained like a rocket ship – though it needs to be pointed out that she has had some issues leaving the gate in morning trials. If the M. Puype-trained 4-year-old filly breaks with her field, she’s likely to be long gone, and even if she doesn’t the daughter of Maclean’s Music should be hard to beat. There’s no value to be found, of course, so we have the option of making her rolling exotic single or simply passing the race.
*
*
RACE 3: Post: 1:34 PT Grade: X
Single: 6-Shadow Sphinx

Forecast: Shadow Sphinx has won five of his last six starts and seems well-placed to continue his hot streak in this $50,000 turf miler for older horses. Fresh from a career top score at Del Mar in late November, the M. Glatt-trained gelding retains F. Prat, projects to settle in the second flight and then have dead aim from the quarter pole home. However, at 8/5 on the morning line and likely to go lower, the son of Pioneerof the Nile looks like another very short price logical pick. We’ll make him a rolling exotic single but otherwise sit it out.
*
*
RACE 4: Post: 2:05 PT Grade: C+
Use: 1-Awhitesportscoat; 2-Shane Zain; 5-Camby

Forecast: Here’s a spread race, a 14-runner affair for $10,000 older claimers sprinting six furlongs. We’ll go three-deep, but best advice to use as many as you can afford to. Shane Zain is a class dropper with high percentage connections and his recent speed figures indicate he could regain his best form against this softer group. The R. Baltas-trained gelding lands J. Rosario and projects to be prominent throughout and have every chance. Awhitesportscoat has nine wins during his career and has put together a series of sharp races while facing starter’s allowance foes. The rail post probably doesn’t do him any good – the son of Hansen isn’t real quick – but if he can avoid trouble and find room to rally the S. Knapp-trained gelding could make his presence felt in the final furlong. Camby, first or second in six of nine career starts over the local main track, is another dropping sharply in class and may wake up against this group. He was a winner against stronger competition here during the fall meeting, though his recent Los Alamitos form isn’t particularly encouraging.
*
*
RACE 5: Post: 2:35 PT Grade: B-
Use: 2-Jen’s Battle; 7-A G Indy; 8-Sabinos Pride

Forecast: New York shipper Jen’s Battle drops into a claimer for the first time since last summer and seems well-spotted for a return to good form in this restricted (nw-3) $35,000 seller for fillies and mares at a mile on grass. She’s adding blinkers for the first time, and while she’s a tad shy in the speed figure department she attracts J. Rosario for the same barn that won with an Eastern shipper yesterday. At 7/2 on the morning line, we’ll put the daughter of Declaration of War slightly on top. A G Indy does her best work as the controlling speed, and she seems certain to employ that strategy against today. The A. Lerner-trained filly always is suspect under pressure in the final furlong but if she can shake loose early she could take this field a very long way. Sabinos Pride has the blinkers off angle that we like, and while she’s facing older foes today she’s also dropping from $50,000 to $35,000 while moving into a restricted affair, so we suspect she’ll be highly competitive. Look for her to drop over from her outside post, secure some cover, and then try to coming running late.
*
*
RACE 6: Post: 3:05 PT Grade: B+
Single: 2-Du Jour

Forecast: Du Jour flashed plenty of ability when narrowly beaten is his debut in a strong maiden turf miler at Del Mar last November, a very promising performance in which he lost more ground than he was beaten by. Today, the son of Temple City gets Lasix, switches to dirt, and based on his recent workouts the B. Baffert-trained sophomore should be able to handle the main track just fine. With M. Smith riding him back, this sophomore colt should produce a forward move, one that figures to produce a diploma-earning victory, so at 2-1 on the morning line (and we hope we can get it) let’s make him in a win play and rolling exotic single.
*
*
RACE 7: Post: 3:35 PT Grade: B
Use: 5-She’sa Perfectlady; 6-England’s Rose

Forecast: We’ll double the seventh race, a maiden special weight grass event for older fillies and mares, with preference on top to England’s Rose. The lightly-race daughter of English Channel needs to get out of the gate cleanly – she’s been virtually left in both of her starts to date – but if she can secure a decent early position the J. Shirreffs-trained four-year-old should be capable of producing the last run. This nine furlong trip will be to her advantage as well. She’sa Perfectlady is solid in the speed figure department and was most recently a willing third in a fast, highly-rated miler. She’s another with further improvement in her and the closing style to move up at this longer distance.
*
*
RACE 8: Post: 4:05 PT Grade: B+
Single: 7-Kalypso

Forecast: Kalypso had every chance to win the mile and one-sixteenth Starlet S.-G1 at Los Alamitos last month but she hit a wall inside the furlong pole and was worn down late by stable mate Varda. They meet again over seven furlongs in this year’s edition of the Santa Ynez S.-G3 and at this shorter trip we’ll give the daughter of Brody’s Cause a good chance to gain some revenge. Drawn comfortably outside, removing blinkers, and sporting an excellent recent workout (47 1/5 seconds, second fastest of 73), she switches to J. Rosario and owns a smart stakes score over this main track during the fall season. At 5/2 on the morning line the B. Baffert-trained filly is a win play and rolling exotic single.
*
*
RACE 9: Post: 4:35 PT Grade: B+
Use: 1-Gallovie; 7-Althea Gibson

Forecast: Althea Gibson just crushed a California-bred first-level allowance field at Los Alamitos on the main track but her form suggests she’s even better on grass. Already a two-time turf sprint winner, the daughter of Grazen has a prior victory over the local lawn and sports a 58 seconds flat (fastest of 39) workout since raced. Bug girl J. Pyfer rides her back and should have her on or near the lead throughout. Gallovie turns back to a sprint after wiring the field in a state-bred allowance race on grass at Del Mar in late November. She’s probably most effective around two turns but in her presence form the R. Baltas-trained mare must be given at least a little bit of a look. We’ll have tickets using both in our rolling exotics and then we’ll press with Althea Gibson on top.

Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks Fair Grounds - Race #4

Picks
Notes

#5 Laker Mamba
Turf debut was sensational -- he tucked in behind the pace, and the moment he tipped out in the lane, it was over. He came away sharply that day and returns here with Lasix while trying winners.

#6 Royal Prince
Looks like the one to beat while adding Lasix, and he was just 9/5 in a Grade III in his most recent start. The figures are also a touch light to this point, and he's a sure underlay.

#3 Excess Magic
He has hit the wire first in both turf tries, and he has some tactical pace to work out a decent trip with these. Thinking he'll find one or two of these a bit too much, so he's best used underneath.

Race Summary
Laker Mamba checked all the boxes in that sharp turf score last time out. He showed positional pace and a big turn of foot when cut loose in the stretch. I'd happily take him as the third choice here.

Fair Grounds - Race #5

Picks
Notes

#10 Custom Cut
She made a pretty nice middle move last time out, and that sort of run can often lead to something more sustained next out over the local strip. She's got a real chance in a cheap race.

#3 Mane Priority
Goes second off the layoff after showing pace and holding second behind an easy winner last time out. With a move forward with that race under her belt, she's got a right to be tough.

#4 Cajun Music
Has shown little in those last two local starts, but the price will surely get better today, and she may be able to come along late for a piece.

Race Summary
Custom Cut can spy this pace early, and if he's able to better sustain her middle move this time around, there may not be anyone calling for her late.

Fair Grounds - Race #9

Picks
Notes

#4 Mr. Old Hat
Gets back to a more reasonable level after a pretty honest fifth with special weight company last time out. That was a fairly encouraging effort in the second start off the long break, and he could be sitting on another move forward -- that would do the trick.

#12 C F Johnathan
He has had ten chances, so I would want something like the 9/2 ML price to jump in, but he should be able to get a good spying trip from this outside draw, and there isn't much to beat in here.

#10 Antietam Road
Showed nothing at 11/1 in the debut, and now he plunges in class for this second start. He wouldn't surprise, but he's almost sure to be a bit of an underlay after the dull first try.

Race Summary
Mr. Old Hat stepped up with a decent effort last time out at the special weight level, and now he drops into a win spot. The 8/1 ML would be more than attractive.

Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks Gulfstream Park - Race #3

Picks
Notes

#2 Hercules
Made a decent run for third against open company and has the perfect pedigree for a mile; tough in the stretch of this one.

#3 Seazan
Was third in two restricted stakes races and was a well-beaten fifth last out; his best makes him a factor.

#4 Southern Passage
Was a clear winner at Churchill last out and is perfect at the one-turn one-mile distance; good late mover.

Race Summary
Hercules comes off the best effort of any of these and looks to improve of that one; well-placed here.

Gulfstream Park - Race #5

Picks
Notes

#1 Liza Star
Has spent her career battling better than this and can power her way in front as she switches to turf.

#5 Swirling Candy
Ran evenly last time out and has a good record on turf; can mix it up with these.

#6 Kitten's Covergirl
Has a good closing move on occasion and could get a speed battle in front of her.

Race Summary
Liza Star has had a very good career and has been at higher levels; she moves over to the grand but has natural speed and should be the one to catch.

Gulfstream Park - Race #7

Picks
Notes

#2 Cool Hand Coop
Was too late in his bid in his last two and could be helped by blinkers; Lopez returns aboard and should have this one rolling.

#4 Souper Highvoltage
Has shown speed going long and can benefit from turning back in distance; fits here.

#6 Sovereign Warrior
Ran on for second against similar and can be very tough if he has a similar closing move.

Race Summary
Cool Hand Coop has a good kick and the blinkers could help him stay closer early; has the talent to be a factor.

# 10 VINTAGE KITTEN 8/1

# 1 MYAMANOI 3/1

# 11 MAX'S CAUSEWAY 7/2

VINTAGE KITTEN gets the edge as the bet in here and is a formidable value bet given the line at 8/1. Demonstrates the look of a profitable play, averaging a solid 83 speed figure which is one of the strongest in this group. Has to be given consideration - I like the numbers from the last affair. Has run admirably when racing a turf route race. MYAMANOI - This colt has to be given a shot just off the earnings per start in turf route events alone. Last time out, this colt faced a stronger field. MAX'S CAUSEWAY - I would have to support this horse on the jockey and trainer numbers alone. Ortiz has recent ROI numbers which make this entrant a very good wager.

#3 GRAB THE CHANCE (ML=9/2)
#5 TIZ TRIUMPHANT (ML=4/1)

GRAB THE CHANCE - Based on morning drills, I look for this gelding to run a big race. Ochoa, the trainer, shows intent by adding Lasix in this event. A positive sign. TIZ TRIUMPHANT - I like the fact that this 1st timer has been working over the same track he'll be making his debut on. Bennett is giving this one Lasix for the first time. Very nice.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 HAIL SOUTHERN (ML=5/2), #2 ATWATER (ML=7/2), #7 T J MUNNINGS (ML=6/1),

HAIL SOUTHERN - I'm prognosticating a lackluster go of it out of him today. ATWATER - No value in making a bet on this entrant. Probably won't improve off that December 26th event. T J MUNNINGS - 6/1 is just too low of a value to take on most any thoroughbred that has run poorly in back to back efforts.

#5 LITTLE RACHEL (ML=5/2)

LITTLE RACHEL - This filly usually does her best running late. Look for her back of the pack early in the race and rolling down the lane on the tiring speed horses. She finished in the place spot December 12th, but was well in front of the show horse. This jockey and conditioner are reliable together. Winning pct when teamed up is tough to beat. Garcia will try adding the 'hood' today in hopes of an improved performance. Another way to judge class is earnings per start. This horse has the uppermost in the field. I think she'll be close at the finish. Have to make this filly a strong challenger; she comes off a solid contest on Dec 12th.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 BYE BYE MISS PIE (ML=4/5), #2 PHAROAH'S HEART (ML=5/2),

BYE BYE MISS PIE - This filly almost certainly won't be really close at the finish. PHAROAH'S HEART - Doesn't look to have enough positive angles to bear out the reward.

https://www.trackmaster.com/images/tophat.jpgGUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - LITTLE RACHEL - Comparing last speed ratings in this field, nobody beats this filly. Tops in the field with a last speed rating of 93 on December 12th.

# 6 LADYS A CARTEL 2/1

# 4 ALL PRETTIED UP 6/1

# 8 VENTURA JESS JQM 7/2

My selection in here is LADYS A CARTEL. Is tough not to examine given the company run in recently. Has run very well when racing a short race. Could provide positive gains based on formidable recent speed figures with an average of 89. ALL PRETTIED UP - May best this field here, showing solid figures of late. Has performed very well lately in short races, posting a nifty 88 avg speed fig. VENTURA JESS JQM - Earned a reliable Equibase Speed Figure in the most recent race. Can run another good one in this race. She has to be given a shot given the very good speed numbers.
