2021 Australian Open men's singles semifinals

Novak Djokovic vs. Aslan Karatsev

The first of the men's singles semifinals at the 2021 Australian Open is set for Thursday, and it's fair to say it's not the lineup anyone expected.

I said in my preview of Novak Djokovic vs. Alexander Zverev that I didn't believe there was too much wrong with the Serb after his "torn abs" claims earlier in the week, and both wagers I suggested in that match were winners.

The first set tiebreak and Over 41.5 total games both provided a healthy profit, and now a seemingly totally fit Djokovic takes on the man who few, if any, casual tennis observers heard of before this tournament -- Aslan Karatsev.

Karatsev had never even made the main draw of a grand slam before this Australian Open, and his record in main level tournaments prior to this fortnight was a distinctly unimpressive 3-10.

To be totally honest, I'd only watched a handful of Karatsev matches at most prior to this week, with the most recent of these a pretty tame loss to a fading Andreas Seppi on a slow indoor hard court in Nur-Sultan in October.

It can't be overstated how stunning this breakout week has been for the Russian, who's not exactly a spring chicken in tennis terms at 27-years-old.

In reaching the semis, Karatsev became the first male player in the Open era to make a slam semifinal in his maiden appearance. He also is the first man ranked outside the top 100 to make the last four in Melbourne since Patrick McEnroe did it way back in 1991.

Karatsev's efforts so far will see him surge up the world rankings from No. 114 to at least No. 42 when the next rankings come out on Monday.

If he beats Djokovic he'll be inside the top 30, and if he wins the tournament he'll be No. 14 in the world.

That's all highly unlikely of course, but the way his week or so has gone thus far in Melbourne anything is possible in theory.

If we look at Karatsev's main level career stats we see that prior to this tournament he'd only held serve 73 percent of the time and broken serve 20.3 percent of the time, which equates to a very mediocre hold/break total of 93.3.

That correlates pretty well with his weak record at main level, but in this tournament he has held serve 85.4 percent of the time and broken 42.4 percent of the time for a stellar 127.8 hold/break total.

That puts him at an elite level (for this tournament) overnight after being a decent Challenger player, which is unprecedented in recent times for a player of his age.

It's hard to see this run continuing though, and he was rather fortunate that G***** Dimitrov injured his back while leading Karatsev by a set in their quarterfinal.

Dimitrov could barely move in the latter stages of that match, and his capitulation has certainly allowed Karatsev's stats to look a little more impressive than they otherwise would have been.

Assuming (and we can't confidently second guess anyone's fitness in this tournament) that Djokovic's seemingly remarkable recovery from "torn abs" continues to improve after a couple more days off, it's hard to see anything other than the Serb moving into yet another Australian Open final.

He looked pretty much at full strength in his four-set win over Zverev, and surely now the nerves will kick in for Karatsev, facing the world No. 1 in a grand slam semifinal -- especially if fans are allowed back in by then.

Melbourne's snap lockdown is due to end on Wednesday, and I would expect the pressure of the situation with fans back inside Rod Laver Arena to have some sort of bearing on things in the mind of Karatsev.

The match is not an easy one to bet unless you're taking a punt on Karatsev, but Djokovic's record at hard-court grand slams when he has been a sub -1000 favorite is 87-2.

One of those losses was the U.S. Open default in September against Pablo Carreño Busta, and the other was in Melbourne in 2017 when he was taken down by Denis Istomin in five thrilling sets.

That's the sort of performance that Karatsev will need, and, based on the form he's shown this tournament, he has the weapons to do some damage. Plus he may well be physically stronger if Djokovic still does have an issue with his abs.

What is more likely though is a nervy start from Karatsev, and the only bet I'll take on in this match is for Djokovic to win the first set pretty comfortably, 6-2 (+450).

The Serb will surely want to put down a marker here early on, and, while Karatsev has a decent serve, he's no John Isner or Milos Raonic. Indeed, Djokovic has more aces per game (0.82) than Karatsev (0.64) this tournament and has held more often (91 percent compared to 85 percent). So the Russian can't really rely on huge serving to get him out of any trouble early on.

This one will either be a bit of a damp squib or one of the most memorable matches in recent times, and it seems likely it will be the former.

Novak Djokovic to win first set 6-2 (+450)

The Jets defeated the Oilers by one goal despite getting outshot 45-24 on Monday. Edmonton dished out 37 hits, while Winnipeg only managed 17 hits. Edmonton had a lot more scoring chances and should be fired up in this one. The Oilers are ranked No. 7 at home in face-off win percentage, while the Jets are ranked No. 25 on the road. Winnipeg owns a -9.2 shot differential in road games, one of the worst marks in the NHL. The Jets are 2-4 after a win while Edmonton is 3-2 after a loss. Finally, the Jets have a big revenge tilt against Vancouver on deck. Take the Oilers.

UEFA Champions League

Juve lost this past weekend 0-1 at Napoli in a clear look ahead spot to this game. However even in the loss, they played very well and generated 2.01 xG compared to just 1.06 for Napoli yet were unable to get on the scoreboard. Even still, defensively they have been fantastic for quite some time. Before that loss, they had kept six clean sheets from their last seven games which includes games against Inter Milan (twice), Roma and Napoli in the Super Cup.

Meanwhile Porto has played to four straight draws, failing to beat teams like Boavista and Belenenses, teams that a true UCL contender should be beating handedly.

Porto is the underdog here and they can be tough to beat in that role, especially at home where they were unbeaten in the group stage including a 0-0 draw against Man City, but I think we see Ronaldo do his thing here and will this team to an important leg 1 road victory and at this price, it's too hard to pass up.

Analysis: Champions League - Juventus at FC Porto
Quick Synopsis: Leg 1 of the round of 16 and a play on Italian side Juventus. The Italian side come in with what is likely their healthiest side all season anchored by a defensive back line that has only allowed 2 goals in their last 8 competitive matches. They sit 4th in Serie A in search of their 10th straight title but their focus this season has clearly been on this competition and that was highlighted with a dominating 3-0 win at Barcelona breaking their 38 game unbeaten run and winning the group. They'll be led up front by the duo of Ronaldo and Morata and will likely field a quicker midfield combo to counteract what's likely to be a congested defensive game plan through that midfield. The home side have struggled of late with 4 straight draws and 3 in league play to fall off their title chase. While these two did meet in the knockout stages 3 years back with Juventus winning 2-0 (away) and 1-0 (home) this is a much stronger Italian side this time around.
The play is Juventus +104

ANALYSIS: The Heat are an underwhelming 11-16 heading into this game, including 4-9 on the road. They had an outbreak of COVID-19 that forced them to play shorthanded for a while, and injuries also have been a problem. For this matchup with Golden State, they will be without Goran Dragic (ankle) and Avery Bradley (calf). The Warriors are 10-6 at home this season, so look for them to come away victorious here.

UEFA Champions League picks from Martin Green

Porto vs. Juventus picks (Wednesday, 3 p.m. ET)

Juventus to win (+102)
Cristiano Ronaldo to score (+105)

All eyes will be on Cristiano Ronaldo when Juventus takes on Porto in the Champions League Round of 16 on Wednesday.

The Portuguese forward has achieved legendary status across the globe after winning the Balon d'Or five times and setting a number of goal-scoring records. Yet he is especially revered in his homeland, having led Portugal to the European Championship in 2016 and the UEFA Nations League in 2019, so he can expect a warm welcome.

Porto must find a way to thwart the superstar when it hosts Juventus at Estádio do Dragão, but that is easier said than done. Ronaldo is the top scorer in Champions League history, with 132 goals in 173 appearances, and he has lifted the trophy a record five times. He already has scored four goals in four games in this season's competition, and he will be desperate to add to that total on Portuguese soil this week.

Juventus Strives for Greater Consistency

Juventus has endured an inconsistent season in Serie A. It suffered a 1-0 defeat against Napoli over the weekend, a result that left it eight points behind league-leading Inter Milan, albeit with a game in hand.

The Bianconeri are bidding for a 10th consecutive Serie A title, but they have just 12 wins in 21 games thus far. Their struggles largely can be attributed to upheaval off the pitch.

Massimiliano Allegri left in the summer of 2019 after leading the club to five straight titles, and replacement Maurizio Sarri struggled. Juventus just about held off the challenge of Inter to make it nine in a row, but the defense regressed and performance levels were underwhelming.

Sarri was axed, and Andrea Pirlo - a club legend as a player but with no managerial experience - replaced him.

Juventus has struggled for consistency under Pirlo. It still is pretty strong on defense, but it has scored fewer goals than each of its rivals in the top six in Serie A.

Porto Goes Four Games Without Winning

However, Juventus was excellent in the Champions League group stage. It won five of its six games and topped a group that also featured Barcelona, Dynamo Kiev and Ferencvaros. Its only defeat came at home against Barcelona, but Ronaldo and several other key players were missing for that contest.

Juventus beat Barcelona 3-0 at Camp Nou in the reverse fixture and clinched the top spot in the group. Ronaldo totally upstaged Lionel Messi in that game, scoring twice and looking menacing throughout.

Porto did very well to finish second in a group that included Manchester City, Olympiakos and Marseille. However, its domestic form has been a little uninspiring in recent weeks. It has drawn its last four games and trails league-leading Sporting Lisbon by eight points.

This will not be an easy game for Juventus, which is missing Paulo Dybala and Aaron Ramsey. Yet Pirlo has a large and talented squad at his disposal, and Juventus ultimately should be too strong for Porto, particularly with Ronaldo leading the line alongside the dangerous Alvaro Morata.

UEFA Champions League picks from Martin Green:

Sevilla vs. Borussia Dortmund picks (Wednesday, 3 p.m. ET)

Sevilla to win (+135)
Sevilla draw no bet (-145)
Sevilla to qualify (+110)

Sevilla will bid for its 10th consecutive victory when it hosts Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League Round of 16 on Wednesday.

Julen Lopetegui's men beat Roma, Wolves, Manchester United and Inter Milan en route to winning the Europa League last season. The final was played in August as the COVID-19 pandemic caused significant delays, meaning Sevilla had a very short offseason.

The players were understandably fatigued at the start of the 2020-21 campaign and results were a little inconsistent, but Sevilla has roared back into form in recent weeks.

It has won consecutive league games against Alaves, Cadiz, Eibar, Getafe and Huesca while defeating Leganes, Valencia, Almeria and Barcelona in Copa del Rey, with the latter victory being the most impressive. Sevilla is full of confidence right now as it has not conceded in its last seven matches, which augurs well for the meeting with Borussia Dortmund.

Turmoil in Dortmund

Sevilla is settled on and off the pitch, whereas the situation with Dortmund is pretty chaotic. Manager Lucien Favre was fired in December after his team lost 5-1 at home to newly promoted Stuttgart.

Borussia Dortmund was fifth in the Bundesliga standings at the time, and Favre paid the price for failing to fully exploit the vast potential of his young team. Assistant coach Edin Terzic was handed the reins on a temporary basis until the end of the season, but Borussia Dortmund is now sixth in the league with just one win in its last five games.

It is 15 points behind league-leading Bayern Munich and 11 in back of RB Leipzig. Erling Haaland has been brilliant on attack with 16 goals in 15 games, and the likes of Jadon Sancho, Jude Bellingham and Giovanni Reyna have shown flashes of their brilliance, but overall, Dortmund looks a little disjointed.

Several key players were missing for a 2-2 draw with Hoffenheim over the weekend, with Thomas Meunier, Dan-Axel Zagadou, Axel Witsel, Lukasz Piszczek, Roman Bürki and Marcel Schmelzer all sidelined.

A Rock-Solid Defense

A key concern for Sevilla on Wednesday will be stopping Haaland. The 20-year-old superstar fired in six goals in just four appearances during the Champions League group stage. He arguably is the world's best finisher, despite his tender age, and he could be dangerous in this game if he receives decent support from the likes of Sancho, Reyna, Julian Brandt and Marco Reus.

However, Sevilla has been extremely strong on defense this season. It has conceded just 16 goals in 22 league games and gone more than 700 minutes without giving up a single tally. In that time, it has shut out a Barcelona team featuring Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann, so it will not be too fearful of Haaland.

The defensive pairing of Diego Carlos and Jules Koundé has been remarkably strong, and Sevilla boasts tremendous quality at midfield. Key player Lucas Ocampos is injured following a horrorific tackle by Getafe's Djené, but Sevilla can bring in the talented Papu Gomez - signed from Atalanta in January - to replace him, and it should have enough quality to get the better of Dortmund in this matchup.

The UNDER in the New York/Orlando game is my strongest technical investment on Wednesday as the Magic are 11-0 UNDER since March 8, 2016, following a road loss in which they scored 15-plus points more in the second half. The UNDER is a profitable 8-2-1 since December 28, 2019, in games in which New York is a favorite, including 6-1 when the Knicks are road favorites.
The UNDER is a profitable 17-5 in New York's last 22 games after allowing 100 or more points in its previous game, 18-8 UNDER in its last 26 games overall, and 5-0 UNDER in its previous five road affairs. I also like the fact that the Knicks are 21-9-2 UNDER with rest versus conference foes, while the Magic are 15-4 UNDER with rest versus conference opponents.
Finally, New York is 10-1 UNDER this season versus subpar defensive teams that are allowing opponents to shoot 46% or better from the field. With the UNDER being a 60% winning proposition in this series over the last three seasons, take the UNDER and invest with confidence.

OKLAHOMA CITY @ MEMPHIS | 02/17 | 9:00 PM EST
OKLAHOMA CITY +7
ANALYSIS: Second of a back-to-back for both teams and neither side is playing particularly well, but the point being that Memphis probably shouldn't be -7 against anyone currently. The Grizz were obliterated on their own court Tuesday by New Orleans. OKC isn't winning often but usually is competitive. The Thunder are 4-1 ATS in their past five as dogs.

ANALYSIS: Nebraska probably deserved to cover last night, but faded badly down the stretch. The Cornhuskers got just nine points from their bench. Now they face a quick turnaround and their seventh game in the past 12 days. In this rematch, I like the Terps to notch their third straight double-digit victory.

ANALYSIS: The Hawks have lost seven of eight as they visit a Boston team that's 7-2 ATS in its last nine as a home favorite. The Celtics also are 7-2 ATS in their last nine games with zero rest. Defensively, Atlanta has crumbled, and De'Andre Hunter's absence is a big reason why. Over the last 10 games, the Hawks are allowing an average of 118.5 points on 48.4 percent shooting. Lay the points.

SACRED HEART PK
ANALYSIS: Sacred Heart hasn't played since Jan. 31 due to a COVID pause, but the Pioneers still should be favored in this spot. They won the first meeting, 65-48 at home, and have now beaten the Blue Devils 11 straight times. CCSU is rated 341st by KenPom, 28 spots behind Sacred Heart. In the first meeting, the Pioneers dominated the boards and held CCSU to 27.1 percent shooting. The Blue Devils have been held under 60 points in five of their last seven.

USC -10.5
ANALYSIS: USC has won six in a row, four of those by double digits. The Trojans have covered five straight. Arizona State has trouble on the defensive glass, which is bad news against a huge Trojans team that grabs 12.5 offensive boards per game. USC also had an extra day to prepare for this matchup. Look for the Sun Devils, who could again be without forward Marcus Bagley (ankle) and guard Josh Christopher (back), to fall to 1-7-1 ATS in their last nine road games.

DRAKE @ NORTHERN IOWA | 02/17 | 8:00 PM EST
DRAKE -5.5
ANALYSIS: This in-state rivalry has been dominated by the favorite (20-4-2 ATS last 26 meetings), and I think that continues Wednesday night in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Drake is coming off a monumental overtime win over Loyola, one day after losing to the Ramblers by 27. The Bulldogs pulled off that 51-50 win despite the continued absence of leading scorer ShanQuan Hemphill (foot surgery). Hemphill scored 8 points in 23 minutes in the first meeting with Northern Iowa, an 80-59 home win. Without him, they can cover this middling number.

ANALYSIS: The Golden Gophers have shot below 30 percent from deep in nine of their past 11 games, plus they're 0-7 SU (1-6 ATS) in true road games. While Minnesota lost by 13 at Maryland on Sunday night, Indiana has been off since losing at Ohio State on Saturday. (The Hoosiers are 10-3 ATS in their last 13 following a loss). Trayce Jackson-Davis dominated Minnesota last season, averaging 22.5 points and 13 rebounds while shooting over 70 percent. Lay it.

Richmond +2.5 over VCU
Mike Rhodes is a heck of a coach because this VCU team lost just about every starter from last year and heading down the stretch are the top team in the A-10. This team is great at home as well, but I do think Vegas is giving Richmond a lot of respect with this low line. The Spiders are just an overall solid basketball team that has the size advantage, experience, better scorers and holds the advantage in just about every other area. This team is stacked and I couldn’t imagine how great they would be if Nick Sherod was healthy this season. Richmond has not played in many conference games so when you see them sitting in 6th place it’s not a true metric of who they are. Look for the Spiders to get the road win and to prove they are contenders to win the A-10 tournament coming up in March. Take Richmond.

NEW YORK @ ORLANDO | 02/17 | 7:00 PM EST
ORLANDO +4.5
ANALYSIS: This feels like a bit of a trap game for the Knicks, who enter on a three-game winning streak. For one, they are without one of their best defenders in center Mitchell Robinson after he had surgery on Tuesday. The 7-footer averages 8.8 points, 8.4 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game. Second, this is the Knicks' lone road game amid a stretch of seven at home. Teams hate one-game trips that interrupt a long homestand. Lastly, the Magic are getting some reinforcements back in Evan Fournier, Al-Farouq Aminu and perhaps James Ennis. Orlando has covered four of the past five at home in the series.

MARQUETTE +2.5
ANALYSIS: When Butler lost 70-67 at Marquette on Feb. 2, the Bulldogs got 13 points, six rebounds and four steals from senior forward Bryce Nze. We mention this because Nze is out for the rematch here due to a groin injury. He averages 10.7 points and a team-best 7.7 rebounds this season. Marquette has lost three straight since, but those were against better teams than Butler.

MIAMI @ SACRAMENTO | 02/18 | 10:00 PM EST
SACRAMENTO +2.5
ANALYSIS: Sometimes, it's not smart at all to bet a next-day NBA game this early. Other times, it can be GREAT value. I believe this spread is stealing in favor of the Kings because Miami was at Golden State on Wednesday and surely will be gassed (maybe rest a guy or two) on Thursday in the team's fifth game of a seven-game Western Conference swing -- not to mention, Miami could be looking ahead to an NBA Finals rematch vs. the Lakers on Saturday. The Kings are on a four-game skid but pretty healthy and also well-rested, last playing on Monday. They like Thursdays, too, covering seven of the past eight on that day.

OKLAHOMA CITY +7
ANALYSIS: While the Thunder have ruled out Al Horford in the second of a back-to-back, star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will play after missing the past four with a knee sprain. The Grizz aren't listing anyone out specifically as of yet in the second of a B2B for them as well -- they were embarrassed at home by the Pelicans on Tuesday -- but are a bit thin in the backcourt with De'Anthony Melton and Desmond Bane out due to injury/personal reasons. Memphis is 2-6 ATS in its past eight.

MISSOURI ST. @ S. ILLINOIS | 02/17 | 9:15 PM EST
MISSOURI ST. -5
ANALYSIS: Missouri State enters on a five-game winning streak, the past four by double digits, which includes a 65-53 win over Southern Illinois last week at home. Sophomore forward Isiaih Mosley leads the Missouri Valley Conference in scoring at 20.3 ppg., and MSU has allowed 62 or fewer points in its last four. Southern Illinois hasn't had leading scorer Marcus Domask (16.3 ppg) since Jan. 4 due to a foot injury, and while he might be getting closer there is no indication he will play here. The Salukis are 1-7 ATS in their last eight home games vs. a team with a winning road record.

EDMONTON -140
ANALYSIS: The Oilers burned me Monday vs. the Jets when Edmonton started No. 2 netminder Mike Smith, and he was terrible before being pulled. Should be Mikko Koskinen here. The Oilers lost 6-5 but still dominated possession by outshooting the Jets 45-24. Connor McDavid could score his 500th career point tonight, which if so would accomplish the feat in 369 games -- exactly the same number of games it took McDavid's idol Sidney Crosby to score 500 points. Winnipeg is 0-8 in its past eight after allowing at least five goals in the previous game.

TENNESSEE -11.5
ANALYSIS: A few more points than I'd like to give, but the Gamecocks are on a three-game skid and shot a combined 38.9 percent in those games. That offense should be much worse here with both Jermaine Couisnard (ankle) and Justin Minaya (head injury) out. Cousinard is third on the team in scoring (9.7 ppg) and first in assists (3.6 apg), while Minaya is fourth in scoring (8.1 ppg) and first in rebounding (6.9 rpg). The Vols are 4-1 ATS in their past five vs. teams with a losing record.

DETROIT @ CHICAGO | 02/17 | 8:00 PM EST
CHICAGO -190
ANALYSIS: These rivals were not set to originally play Wednesday but the NBA quickly made a match when Pistons-Mavericks and Hornets-Bulls games were postponed. Detroit begins life without Blake Griffin -- he's still on the team but apparently won't play until the Pistons either can trade him or buy him out. Chicago has been much better on the road than at home but is clearly the more talented team here and has won the past four in the series. I just don't trust the Bulls to cover the 4.5-point spread.

VANCOUVER @ CALGARY | 02/17 | 10:00 PM EST
CALGARY -145
ANALYSIS: It's already the sixth meeting between the rivals with the Flames leading 4-1 and 2-0 at home. The Canucks are just 2-8 away this season and have lost their past five. Decent chance it's the No. 2 goaltender for both here -- Braden Holtby for Vancouver and David Rittich for Calgary, but either way the Flames are in much better shape in net. The Canucks are 4-13 in their past 17 at the Saddledome.
