Al Cimaglia: Pompano Park Pick 4 Analysis-$20,000 Guaranteed Pool April 27, 2021 | By Al Cimaglia
Pompano Park has a concise 8-race card ready to go this evening. The 0.50 Pick 4 starts in Race 5. The sequence has a $20,000 guaranteed pool with a 12% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 5

1-Impacter (7-1)-In a race where only #7 shows a win at this level this Pavia trainee could offer a big price and the qualifier was fine. Hasn't raced since 2-22 and then was scratched twice. This 7-year-old has consistently cashed checks versus tougher and could surprise if ready to battle.
6-Creekside Pete (6-1)-Has been trying hard and could be the key to the race. Has the gate speed to get the top and could surprise if Ingraham can do a good job rating the mile.
7-Mighty Surf (7/2)-This is the only mare in the field and the only entry that shows a win at this class, which came back on 12-21. Does have 4 wins in 15 PPk starts but recent form has been dull. Hennessey will take the lines and he has a way of working an advantageous trip.

Race 6

4-Enzio (3-1)-The entire field is new to the straight Open classification but this 5-year-old was an impressive winner in the Open II Handicap on 4-20 at a solid at 8-1. It should be noted he trotted the back half in 56.2 to defeat the 2 below and 2 others from this group.
5-Stick With Me Kid (8/5)-Beaten odds-on chalk has Hennessey back in the bike and will offer little value. Usually is in the hunt, so it is hard to leave off the ticket. Will likely leave and will need to be better than last week.
6-The Lionking As (5/2)-Could leave like last time and get the top in front of #5 but had no answer for Enzio down the lane. Probably will follow the same script but try to steal a quarter or two.

Race 7

2-Brilliant Bob (7-1)-This 4-year-old is very camera shy going 1-39 over the past 2 years. Will consider for a pocket trip as #8 could leave to get the point. The last start was better, this field is soft and will take a swing for a solid price with this post draw.
7-Fist Fighter (6-1)-The last three starts have been good and has hit the board in 4 of 9 at the Pomp with 2 wins. Ingraham is back for his 2nd straight steer and if he puts this 4-year-old in range soon enough good things could happen.
8-Beguin Degoutier (3-1)-This 10-year-old has fallen on hard times this year and has only 1 win in 15 starts. The 8-hole won't help chances but this is a suspect group and has cashed checks versus better. Wallis needs to provide a sharp steer.

Race 8

4-E Z Noah (5/2)-Takes a meaningful drop, the trainer hands the lines to Hennessey and moves inside from post 9.
Will likely leave and look to control the pace and could be bet down.
8-Fritzie Pic Up Man (15-1)-This 10-year-old dropped in last, was bet and got on the engine but faded down the lane. That was not his usual type of trip, usually comes off cover and is in a spot to find a live flow at a big price.
9-Rocksapatriot (3-1)-Makes its 3rd start at this level and just missed in last 2, before that was facing better. Has the speed to beat this bunch but will likely need an honest pace. Should be in the hunt and this post helps the price.

Turned in a really nice effort when second in stakes company at Aqueduct, and while he's still a little bit cheap compared to some of these, he almost always runs his race locally and should get a great trip.


#7 Kid d'Oro
He's another one who shows up almost every time here, and he should be able to land a great, spying trip from this outside draw. Worry that he'll be overbet.


#3 Incite
He's quick enough to find the front if they want it while cutting back, as he isn't meeting any serious pace in here, and he has proven capable of :44 and change half miles here.


Race Summary
Town Jak should be able to keep tabs on the early leader, and his consistency makes him tough from close range in a race where most of the other logical horses have questions to answer.


Parx Racing - Race #8

#5 Chub Wagon
Tried to look around for something to beat her in this spot, but her overall form might be too good. She's probably fast enough to secure the front without too much hassle again, and she's going to be tough to reel in at a short price.


#3 Trolley Ride
The top choice's pace might discourage a couple others who want the front but won't be able to get there at this trip, and this one can rally from off the pace to round out the exacta.


#2 Ujjayi
She has a little bit of class to her, chasing eventual Grade I winner Letruska in the Houston Ladies Classic earlier this year. Think the 6f trip is a sharp ask at this point in time, but she has had success at the trip in the past going 4:2-2-0 at the distance.


Race Summary
Chub Wagon steps into stakes company for the first time, but she brings imposing form that transferred well to open company at Aqueduct last out. Talent will get bet, but she seems likely to handle this group.

Speed steps into stakes company, and this guy should be fastest of the early players. The recent form has been dazzling, and this kind of speed can stretch a group out at this 7f trip.


#6 Grit'n'grind
Price player is a late threat, but he's a bit short on class and may not get quite enough pace, but he's worth using underneath to pass the tired ones.


#10 Hockey Puck
Tactical type is entered with some confidence off the bench, and he brings a bullet work with him for the first start since September. Underneath player.


Race Summary
Breezy Gust will have some pursuers, but he looks likely to find the front, and there are a handful of others in here who are going to be coming up empty late -- he might build up an insurmountable lead.

REJOICE AN BE GLAD - She has recorded decent figures under today's conditions and will probably fare well against this group. Should definitely be carefully examined for this race if only for the quite good Equibase Speed Fig recorded in the last race. DON'T HOLD QUEENS - Should best this field here, showing quite good numbers of late.

HEADEDTOTHESTARS - I like to play horses that faced open company in their last race and drop into state bred races. This gelding fits the bill. This gelding is entered right back into a race in less than 10 days; this is a positive sign. Richard was aboard this gelding in the last race and was impressed enough to take the equine right back. While the finish was disappointing, this magnificent animal made a good stretch move last time around the track at Will Rogers Downs. Have to give a better effort right here in this race.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 DELVIN TO IT (ML=5/2), #4 CRAFTY HEAT (ML=4/1), #5 SLICK RAY (ML=5/1),

DELVIN TO IT - Just can't bet on any less than sharp equine right back after he doesn't land in the money after any long breather. CRAFTY HEAT - Difficult to wager on any racer in a sprint race at 4/1 when he hasn't shown any successful endeavors in sprints in the last couple months. SLICK RAY - Doesn't seem to have enough good aspects to justify the reward.

I'm going to take the Braves -1.5 (+125) in Game 2 of their 4-game home series against the Cubs. Atlanta won the series opener 8-7 and really should have scored more. The Braves left 10 guys on base. They should be primed for another strong offensive showing against Cubs' starter Trevor Williams.
In 4 starts, Williams owns a mere 4.66 ERA and 1.500 WHIP. Note that 3 of his 4 starts came at home. In his lone road outing, he was torched for 5 runs on 10 hits and 2 walks in just 3 1/3 innings at Pittsburgh.
The Braves will send out Ian Anderson, who finally looked like the top tier starter we expected to see out of the gate. In Anderson's last start he went into Yankee Stadium and held NY to just 4 hits in 6 2/3 scoreless innings. He should be able to build on that strong showing against the soft-hitting Cubs. This is also his first career start against Chicago, so Cubs' hitters should be at a disadvantage. Give me the Braves -1.5 (+125)!

We saw a pitcher's duel in the opener of this series last night as Philadelphia secured a 2-1 victory. I expect a much different story to unfold on Tuesday as Zach Eflin squares off against Carlos Martinez. Eflin had a fine spring, and on the face of it has pitched well through four regular season starts as well, recording a 2.77 ERA and 1.00 WHIP. However, there is reason for concern. Eflin has recorded a 49.4% hard-hit ball percentage, a 35.9% ground ball percentage and a 32.1% fly ball percentage - all considerably worse than the MLB average. On a positive note, his walk rate is down but so is his strikeout rate. Note that his two previous career starts against the Cardinals have totaled 13 and 11 runs. Carlos Martinez will counter for St. Louis. He's been a disaster going back to last season. Martinez checks in sporting an ugly 50.0% hard-hit ball percentage and 90.3 mph exit velocity off opposing bats. His strikeout rate dropped off considerably from his career average last season and we've seen further regression so far this year, down to 5.6 strikeouts per nine innings. When Martinez faced the Phillies earlier this month he was tagged for six earned runs in just five innings of work. Take the over (8*).

The Houston Astros have gotten some key guys back healthy in the lineup and are starting to rake. They have gone 4-1 in their last five games overall while averaging 7.2 runs per game during this stretch. I'll gladly back them on the Run Line today to win this game by two runs or more over the Mariners.
Seattle is off to a surprising 13-10 start this season, but we seem to see this every year with them. They get off to a great starts and then fade the rest the way. Now Marco Gonzales gets the ball for the Mariners and is just 1-2 with a 6.05 ERA and 1.343 WHIP in four starts this season, including 1-1 with an 8.68 ERA and 1.715 WHIP in two road starts.
Gonzalez is also 1-5 with a 5.31 ERA and 1.672 WHIP in eight career starts against the Astros, and his teams are 1-7 in those starts. He'll be opposed by Christian Javier, who is 2-0 with a 1.32 ERA and 0.878 WHIP in his three starts this season. He pitched 6 shutout innings in his lone career start against the Mariners last season.
Houston is 17-1 in 18 home meetings with Seattle over the past three seasons. The Astros are 42-16 in the last 58 meetings overall. Houston is 63-28 in its last 91 games as a home favorite. Bet the Astros on the Run Line Tuesday.
