Home Run Derby

Matt Severance's expert pick

The Angels' Shohei Ohtani deserves to be the betting favorite for the 2021 Home Run Derby – he is at +300 - and the No. 1 seed in the eight-man field as he leads the majors in homers and already has set a regular-season HR record for a Japanese-born player. But, wow, will he have a lot on his plate early next week at Coors Field in Denver as after competing in the Home Run Derby on Monday, Ohtani will start for the AL at designated hitter and pitch at some point in the All-Star Game on Tuesday.

Since the current bracket format was instituted in 2015, the top seed has yet to even reach the final. On the flip side, the No. 2 seed has reached the final all five years – no Derby in 2020 – and won it four of the five, including three in a row.

Thus, the pick Monday is Texas Rangers slugger and No. 2 seed Joey Gallo (+450) in his first Home Run Derby. Frankly, he's built for this event as a "three true outcome" player: Gallo usually either strikes out, walks or homers. He doesn't have to worry about whiffing here. Did you know that a few years ago, he became the first player in baseball history to hit 100 career home runs before hitting 100 singles? Gallo, a reserve for the AL in Tuesday's All-Star Game, is on a power surge of late as well for an otherwise awful Rangers squad.

Don't be surprised if Gallo hits one at least 500 feet Monday in the thin air of Denver as Gallo has two career regular-season homers that have traveled at least 490 feet. Unlike in the regular season, the baseballs at Coors Field will not be kept in a humidor beforehand. No Rangers player has won the Derby since Juan Gonzalez in 1993.

First-round HR Derby matchups (1-8 winner vs 4-5 in semifinals; 2-7 winner vs. 3-6):

No. 1 Shohei Ohtani (Angels) vs. No. 8 Juan Soto (Nationals)

No. 4 Salvador Perez (Royals) vs. No. 5 Pete Alonso (Mets)

No. 2 Joey Gallo (Rangers) vs. No. 7 Trevor Story (Rockies)

No. 3 Matt Olson (A's) vs. No. 6 Trey Mancini (Orioles)
