Al Cimaglia: Woodbine Mohawk Park Early Pick 5 Analysis August 9, 2021 | By Al Cimaglia
Tonight's 11 race card at Woodbine Mohawk starts off as usual with the 0.20 Early Pick 5 which has a $100,000 guaranteed pool. It's a competitive sequence and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 1

3-Heavensdor Hanover (5/2)-McNair is back between the pipes and he has gotten the best out of this 5-year-old the last 2 times he has steered. Should be forwardly placed throughout and it could be the 3rd straight picture with this pilot.
7-Okeanos (7/2)-If there is speed battle up front and the fractions are lively this lightly raced 5-year-old should benefit. Makes the 2nd start off the bench and raced from the back in last but came the 2nd half in 55.3. Best to keep in mind, came off the bench and won his 2nd start as the chalk versus this class back in March of 2020. Could history repeat itself?

Race 2

4-Many Moons (7/5)-Looks a cut or two above the rest of the field. Comes off 2 straight wins and has made it looked easy. Stopped the timer in 151.3. in last and with a smooth trip it should be the 3rd win in 4 starts this year.

Race 3

2-Free Willy Hanover (3-1)-Got on the engine and didn't look back in last at 4/5 with Drury aboard but tonight he sticks with Auciello (#3-Buzz). So, Roy will do the steering in the 4th start off the bench and he could follow a similar script. Steps-up and still fits well, was cashing checks versus better at the end of 2020.
7-Mister Of All (9/2)-Team Hudon entry comes off a nice qualifier on 8-3. Goes back on Lasix tonight and could be in the mix with this crew if 100%.
8-Teddys Littleangel (10-1)-Here's another who has had some issues and comes off a decent qualifier. McNair steers and he was up in the qualifier. This pilot has had success with Teddy before and should offer a nice price in a race without a standout.

Race 4

2-Behavenmyself (7/2)-This mare has done her best work with Roy between the pipes and he is back in the bike. The Johnson barn has won at a 21% clip over the last 30 days. This mare runs hot and cold and could be sitting on a big try tonight.
6-T C Scandal (3-1)-Is only 2-22 but comes off a strong effort in last to get its 1st win at Wbsb in 3 tries. Rates a big chance off the last score and is another Johnson entry.
9-Vines To Heaven (5/2)-First start off the claim for the Moreau barn and he won with this mare on 7-26. Went off as an odds-on chalk in last and has the gate speed to get the job done from out here.

Race 5

1-Logan Park (3-1)-Took a few weeks off and had a tune-up on 8-2 to get ready for a big purse. Now returns to face Gold company which he has defeated in 2 and 3 back. Should be a main player.
5-Publicity Seeker (7/2)-Comes off 2 wins in the Dream of Glory series and has been in the mix at the wire versus Gold company at Wbsb. Winner in 5 of 9 at Mohawk draws a choice post and should be in play early on.
11-Fashion Frenzie (9/2)-Comes off a tough trip to cash a 2nd place check in last. Moreau trainee has had some issues, but the talent is there to take the top prize even from the 2nd tier. Has hit the board in 7 of 9 here with 6 pictures. The post helps the price and to best to not overlook.

Might be worth a little price look while getting back around two turns, as his most recent local route trip was pretty decent. He's short on excuses in start number 14, so demand a fair price.


#1 Gage Has a Gray
Pace will have to go from the inside and might have some company, but he tends to stick around better than the other pace and might linger for a piece.


#4 Bourbon Brown
He has never been in this easy, but he does have a tendency to give away ground late in his races. Guessing he's an overbet contender.


Race Summary
Piton is worth a look while getting back around two turns, and his even-running, occasional finishing style might work well in a race where a couple of pace players might be suspect late.


Presque Isle Downs - Race #5

#3 Elgar
He drops a bit for this one after a modest sort of try last time out, and this easier group might allow him to get over the top at a fair price.


#4 Tanners Pride
He finished last of five as the chalk in his local debut, so he'll have to prove that he's able to bounce back here at what might be a bit of an underlaid price.


#8 Blichton
He has done almost all of his lifetime work over the local footing, and he should be in line for another good tactical trip from the outside.


Race Summary
Elgar offers some price intrigues after facing better in his first two local tries. This softer spot might bring out a bit better, and he's not far off what it'd take to land this.


Presque Isle Downs - Race #7

#1 Rio Abajo
Pace has taken nicely to the local footing, and he has some forward ability from the fence that not many in here can match. Might get loose turning for home?


#2 Good On Ya
Can't argue with the overall form, and his sprint abilities in the past seem sharp enough to keep him in the mix with this bunch. Chance from a tracking spot.


#8 Lido Legacy
Finisher might come alive a little to late to make a serious dent with these, but he does have some room to step forward in this first start off the claim.


Race Summary
Rio Abajo is quick enough to battle for the lead with these, and classes up nicely after a couple of nice starts over this surface.

I think that a sprinter coming off a layoff will usually run her best in the 3rd or 4th start back. You have to be keen on that most recent race figure, 78, which is the top recent race speed rating of this group. I'm focusing on the class of this horse, and this one is the 'classiest' of the bunch.

PINK PEARL - In any event of 5 1/2 furlongs, I like to bet on a contender that has been sharp in short distance contests recently. Don't believe this runner will improve too much in today's race. PALMGIRL - Recorded a disappointing rating in the last race in a $25,000 Optional Claiming race on July 27th. Not likely to see an improved performance off of that fig.

TIME GOES ON - He looks very good in this spot and I expect will be on the lead or close at the halfway point. Must be given a shot based on the decent speed rating earned in the last affair. TAKE ME UP BRADY - Has very good Equibase Class Figures relative to this field - worth a look. Has been running very well lately and will probably be close to the front end early on.

HIDENSEEK SALLY - The July 26th event at Mountaineer Park was at a class level of (76). Dropping to a lower class rank considerably, so she should be in a good spot. My expertise says this is the only pace presser in the race. When this rider and conditioner combine forces you have to take a look. Paucar and Clouston have been great together. Have to make this mare a serious competitor; she comes off a sharp contest on Jul 26th. The 69 last race rating looks good in black and white. She has the topmost earnings per start. Check out this one.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 SOUTHERNPERFECTION (ML=6/5), #6 WORLD IS MY CITY (ML=5/1), #3 GRITTY KITTY (ML=6/1),

SOUTHERNPERFECTION - The morning-line favorite is vulnerable here with the lack of drills. WORLD IS MY CITY - Finished sixth last time. Would have to move up to finish in the money today. Could be tough for this animal to beat this field off of that last fig. Doubtful to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's class rating, so put her on the likely underpriced equines list. GRITTY KITTY - The lack of morning blow outs has to make one concerned despite the nice performance in the last race. Won't be easy for this racer to beat this group off of that last rating. Doubtful to improve enough to run a figure anywhere near today's class figure, so put her on the vulnerable competitors list.

The New York Yankees have been hit hard by COVID and injuries of late and are short-handed right now. They should not be this big of favorites over the Kansas City Royals on the road in Game 1 of this series tonight.
The Yankees are without Rizzo and Sanchez and could be without Torres tonight. They are also missing several pitchers including Cole, Chapman, Montgomery and German. It's hard to trust Jameson Taillon in this big of a favorite role considering he is 3-3 with a 5.27 ERA and 1.406 WHIP in nine road starts this season.
Carlos Hernandez has been impressive in his last two starts against the potent Chicago White Sox. He has gone 2-0 with a 0.82 ERA in those two starts while allowing just one earned run in 11 innings. The Royals have won those two games as +230 and +160 underdogs.
The Royals are 6-1 in their last seven home games. Kansas City is 6-1 in its last seven games after scoring 5 runs or more in its previous game. Bet the Royals Monday.

I think we are getting more than a good enough price to take a flyer on the Royals as a +158 home dog against the Yankees. While KC is just playing for pride at this point of the season, it's always a big deal when the pinstripes come to town. I also just think New York is being way overpriced right now.
Yankees had their 5-game losing streak snapped in a 0-2 loss to the Dbacks on Sunday. I like to fade teams off a loss following a big win streak and after a game where the offense was a complete no show.
I know NY starter Jameson Taillon has been much better here of late, but he does have a mere 5.27 ERA and 1.406 WHIP in 9 road starts. KC's Carlos Hernandez has also been very serviceable with a 3.57 ERA and 1.132 WHIP in 4 starts.
You also have a game where the heat index is expected to be over 105 degrees at first pitch and the wind is going to be blowing out to left. This really a coin flip if you ask me and it's just not being priced like it. Give me the Royals +158!

The White Sox head into this series fresh off a series sweep of the rival Cubs at Wrigley Field while the Twins return home following a surprising series win over the Astros in Houston. I believe it's Chicago that is better-suited to keep it rolling in this series-opener.
Lucas Giolito will get the nod for the visiting White Sox. He hasn't enjoyed a great deal of success on the road this season but has shown signs of turning things around lately, allowing just four earned runs in 17 1/3 innings in his last three outings away from home. Note that he has been at his best in night starts this year, recording a 3.19 ERA and 1.01 WHIP in 12 starts, averaging north of six innings per start in the process.
Behind Giolito is a White Sox bullpen that I'm high on right now, as they're relatively fresh having logged just 357 total innings this season. They've held up reasonably well on the road, recording a collective 3.75 ERA and 1.31 WHIP with 14 saves converted and nine blown.
The Twins will give Beau Burrows his first career big league start as they're simply playing out the string having been well out of playoff contention for a while now. With Burrows making his first start he's unlikely to work deep into this game, and that's worth noting as the Twins bullpen has struggled at home to the tune of a 5.14 ERA and 1.35 WHIP. The White Sox certainly aren't an ideal opponent to 'get right' against given Chicago just plated 21 runs in a three-game series against the Cubs and averages 5.0 runs per game on the road this season. Take Chicago.

This is a low O/U number. I believe that it'll likely prove to be too low. Thompson doesn't go deep into games and the Padres just saw him, at Miami, on 7/23. Musgrove was his opponent for that game. Despite that being a pitcher-friendly ballpark, the O/U line was eight. Again, I'm trying to emphasize how low tonight's number is. Having recently seen the pitchers should work in the hitters' favor tonight. Even though Musgrove has pitched well, six of his last night starts have still finished with eight or more combined runs. Another of those finished with seven. While the number is indeed low, it should be a good night for hitting at PetCo. Warm and humid. Prior to last night's pitcher's duel, seven straight Padre games had produced eight or more combined runs. Consider the Over
