Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis August 16, 2021 | By Al Cimaglia
Yonkers Raceway begins the week with a solid 10-race card. The feature goes in Race 7, an Open Handicap Pace with a $45,000 purse. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 also begins in Race 7, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 7

3-Pyro (6-1)- Will go deeper in this leg looking to beat the ML chalk who drew post 7 and will be a tiny price. Steps-up but so do 3 others. Dube is the regular pilot, and he has gate speed to use. This Herrera trainee can be put in play early in the mile and should be in the hunt.
4-Rockapelo (4-1)-Shows a win at the Open Handicap class and Brennan can look to leave or race off cover. Has drawn outside in the last 2 and this post draw should help the cause.
5-Simple Kinda Man (4-1)-Steps-up after a win and has cashed a check at this class recently. Draws well, is in form and Yonkers record is a solid 7 wins in 18 starts.
6-Nandolo N (9/2)-Raced against the Preferred kind at the Big M and finished 2nd there and 2nd here the race before at this class. Should be a player with a smooth trip and an alert start.

Race 8

1-Funknwaffles (3-1)-Alagna entry drops to a more comfortable spot and with this post draw Buter has some choices. This 7-year-old has hit the board in 12 of 20 with 7 pictures.
6-Hickfromfrenchlick (7/2)-Regular pilot Mark MacDonald steers for the Schnittker barn and this will be the 2021 Yonkers debut for this 5-year-old. The game plan could be to get the point and has the gate speed to do so. Best to not overlook, fits and has won 3 of 5 here.

Race 9

2-Splash Brothers (7/5)-Lost by a nose at this class last week after being used from the 8 hole to get on the engine. This post draw should help and comes right back in sequence instead of missing a start. Went off at 1-2 and probably will be bet down here as well. Last week's winner isn't in this field, and got through on the rail after a 2-hole trip. This 4-year-old should be back in the winner's circle for the 5th time this year.

Race 10

1-Escapetothebeach (3-1)-Looking for more after a dull effort in last. Does its best work racing near the top of the stack and Kakaley should have this Morgan trainee forwardly placed leaving from the rail.
7-Bettor Memories (9-1)-Comes off an even try versus better and missed a start. Burke entry has enough gate speed to get a good seat and be in the mix at a nice price. Using and trying to beat the program favorite #4.

Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks Presque Isle Downs - Race #3

#3 Grounded
Can't imagine getting the 5/2 ML price at post time, but it'd feel like a really nice number if he offered it. He has been really solid in a couple of local starts and is bred to love the added ground.


#4 Vintage Kitten
He's already proven around two turns, but his two local starts have produced wildly different results. Chance, but I'd want something better than the ML price.


#1 Saint Marco
He brings pretty solid recent form with him to this one, and he might wind up getting a pretty cozy trip in the pocket from this inside draw.


Race Summary
Grounded should get a great trip right up near the top in this one while trying two turns for the first time, and both sides of the pedigree suggest this stretchout will not be a problem.


Presque Isle Downs - Race #5

#11 Night Cap
This is going to be a big test to try stakes company off the Finger Lakes runs, but she has been impressive so far and should get a nice prompting trip from the outside.


#4 Just One Time
She looks like the one to beat off a very easy stakes score with PA-breds last time out when getting over the local footing for the first time, and she should get a first-over run with these.


#8 Be Sneaky
Her sprint form stacks up okay with this bunch, but she may not offer a really appealing price while trying the local footing for the first time.


Race Summary
Night Cap can play with these at a price from the high draw, as there are a couple of speed players she can press in the early stages, and she has finished off her races with some gusto.


Presque Isle Downs - Race #7

#8 Strugar
Worth a look here while getting over the local surface, as he turned in a couple of really sharp tries over Turfway's synthetic footing over the winter. He seems like a good fit with these.


#4 Race Driver
The form is there for him to be tough, but it's also not a great sign that he's dropping in for a tag for the first time off the bench for the new barn. Tough call at a likely underlaid price.


#6 English Tide
He occasionally shows a little bit of finishing ability, and that might bring him along for a piece of this late at a price.


Race Summary
Strugar might like the local course after producing some sharp tries at Turfway this winter. He's a good fit with these and should get a great trip tracking the pace.

The Cubs (+205) are worth a look as a massive road dog against the Reds in Monday's MLB action. Yes the Cubs have lost 11 straight and aren't going to be getting a whole lot better any time soon, but the price here is just too good to pass up. Chicago will have Justin Steele on the mound, who pitched effectively in his first big league start, giving up just 3 runs in 5 innings against the Brewers. If he can pitch anything close to that, the Cubs have a decent chance here to end their losing streak. Play the Cubs +205!

Monday MLB Free play. My selection is on Atlanta over Miami at 7:10 pm et on Monday.
The Marlins just swept the Cubs at home. I suspect they'll find the going a little tougher as they welcome the Braves to Miami on Monday night, however.
Atlanta was written off by most when Ronald Acuna went down with a season-ending injury. Instead of folding the tent, the Braves have quietly played their best baseball of the season and now find themselves sitting atop the N.L. East Division standings. They just swept the Nationals in a three-game series in Washington and haven't lost consecutive games since mid-July, speaking to their incredible consistency. With that being said, they can't afford to let their foot off the gas here as they have a number of teams breathing down their neck in the N.L. playoff race.
Touki Toussaint will take the ball for Atlanta on Monday. He's sandwiched four solid outings around one bad one at home against the Brewers. In two road starts he's posted a 2.19 ERA and 0.97 WHIP. He won't be asked to do too much here and is supported by a Braves bullpen that has converted 15 saves and blown only six on the road this season.
Braxton Garrett will counter for Miami. While he has recorded a solid 2.25 ERA in three home starts this season, his 1.38 WHIP is a bit concerning. Garrett has essentially had one dominant outing in six trips to the hill this season. His other five starts have been underwhelming as he's worked five innings or less in all five of those. Across all starts he's recorded a disappointing 1.75 WHIP.
The Marlins bullpen entered yesterday's action sporting a collective 6.11 ERA and 1.39 WHIP with just one save converted and one blown over their last seven contests. Take Atlanta.

The Kansas City Royals are worth a shot today as home underdogs to the Houston Astros. Carlos Hernandez has been a pleasant surprise for the Royals, going 2-1 with a 2.96 ERA in five starts this season. We are finally getting the San Diego Padres at a good value after losing four of their last five games coming in. But their best player in Fernando Tatis Jr. returned from the IL yesterday and hit two homers to lead them to an 8-2 victory over the Diamondbacks.
Now the Padres should be able to handle the Rockies in Game 1 of this series with Tatis Jr. back on board. Colorado is just 1-5 in its last six games overall and struggling to score runs right now. The Rockies have managed just 11 runs total in those six games for an average of 1.8 runs per game.
Ryan Weathers has been roughed up of late at home, but he has been at his best on the road, posting a 2.28 ERA and 1.183 WHIP in six road starts this season. He'll be opposed by Antonio Senzatela, who is 2-9 with a 4.71 ERA and 1.428 WHIP in 19 starts this season. Senzatela is 0-2 with a 7.20 ERA in his last two starts against the Padres as well.
The Rockies are 29-63 in their last 92 games vs. a team with a winning record. Colorado is 1-6 in its last seven games as an underdog. Bet the Padres Monday.

I'll take my chances with the Rockies as a home dog against the Padres. Colorado is a different team at home than on the road. They are 38-21 at Coors Field, compared to 14-45 away from home.
The other big thing in this matchup is who San Diego will have on the mound. Padres are set to send out Ryan Weathers, who has been a complete mess here of late. In his last 3 starts, Weathers has given up 20 runs on 22 hits (6 HRs) in 19 1/3 innings. He's also got an ugly 6.51 ERA and 1.448 WHIP in 6 starts against other NL West teams this season. Coors Field is just not the place you want to be pitching when you are in a bad stretch like this. Give me the Rockies +118!
