We are at the point of the season where teams are recognizing their fate. I played on LSU last week, and that was a mistake. The Tigers know that they are heading for a disappointing season, and their level of effort reflected it. I expect to see the same thing out of Miami this week.
Manny Diaz is almost assuredly going to be fired in the very near future. The No. 1 (D'Eriq King) and No. 2 (Jake Garcia) quarterbacks are both out. The Hurricanes are 2-3 and will likely be underdogs in most of their remaining games, which means a bowl berth is unlikely (and would they want to go anyway?). There was a fight at practice last week, which resulted in a players-only meeting. Diaz said there's friction in the locker room because he's attempting to give younger guys playing time, but the older players are unwilling to give up their spot. They are a mess.
Take a look at Miami's resume, and there's not a single thing that they do well: No. 92 in offensive success rate; No. 99 in defensive success rate; No. 105 in points per dive on offense; No. 100 in points allowed per drive on defense; No. 87 in 3rd and 4th down success on offense; and No. 87 in 3rd and 4th down success on defense. There's not one area of the team that you can point to and say, “Well, they're pretty good there…” And that was with a very talented, experience quarterback. Now, you're introducing a freshman making his second appearance on the road.
Shop Around! There are still a handful of -7's available, including Circa (-110); SuperBook Sports (-110); and William Hill (-120). At -7, this is a 4-unit play for me. If it moves to -7.5 across the board, knock your unit size down a bit but this is still a strong play for me.

Even though they played Clemson two weeks ago, Boston College's strength of schedule remains one of the worst in FBS college football. The Eagles allowed 28 points to a UMass team that's 1-5 and was tied with UConn in the fourth quarter last week. The Eagles went to overtime with Missouri, who just gave up 62 points last week and has failed to cover the point spread in nine-straight games. The Eagles were out-gained by Temple, who has lost by scores of 61-14 and 52-3 so far this season. Look through Boston College's box scores this season and there really isn't much to like.
By now, we've figured out the teams that NC State struggles with: Teams that can make explosive plays through the air. Austin Kendall from Louisiana Tech was 26-of-43 for 341 yards and three touchdowns. Will Rogers from Mississippi State was 33-of-49 for 294 yards and two touchdowns. Boston College doesn't have that. Dennis Grosel has a 56.2-percent completion percentage in his career with a 19-to-10 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Clemson held Boston college to 13 points and 4.8 yards per play two weeks ago. NC State is very capable of putting on a similar performance. NC State's defense is No. 1 in 3rd and 4th down success rate; No. 9 in points allowed per drive; and No. 18 in defensive success rate.
At -3 (-115 or better) this is a 4-unit play for me. Shop around. At the time of posting, there are plenty of affordable -3's out there. If the line moves to -3.5 across the board, knock your unit size down a hair, but it's still a play for me.

Early CFB Week 7 Sharp Action

Saturday 12 p.m. ET: Michigan State at Indiana

This Big Ten clash features two teams trending in opposite directions. Michigan State (6-0 SU, 4-1-1 ATS) is undefeated and ranked 10th in the country. The Spartans just waxed Rutgers 31-13, easily covering as 4-point road favorites. Meanwhile, Indiana (2-3 SU, 1-4 ATS) is unranked and just got throttled by Penn State 24-0, failing to cover as 12.5-point road dogs. This line opened with the Spartans listed as a 3.5-point road favorite. Pros and Joes are both on the same page and neither are outsmarting themselves. They've laid the points and steamed Michigan State up from -3.5 to -4.5. Michigan State is outscoring their opponents by an average margin of 37-19. Indiana has been outscored by an average of 28-24. We've also seen some under money show up, dropping the total from 51.5 to 48.5. The forecast calls for mid 50s with 10-15 MPH winds.


Saturday 12 p.m. ET: Texas A&M at Missouri

These SEC rivals are both looking to shoot up in the conference standings with a win. Texas A&M (4-2 SU, 3-3 ATS) just posted an epic 41-38 victory over top-ranked Alabama, winning outright as 18.5-point home underdogs. On the other hand, Missouri (3-3 SU, 0-6 ATS) just edged North Texas 48-35 but failed to cover as 18.5-point home favorites. This line opened with Texas A&M listed as a 9.5-point road favorite. The public is hammering the Aggies after their big win over Alabama. However, despite this lopsided betting we've seen A&M fall from -9.5 to -9, with some books inching down to -8.5. This signals some respected money buying low on Missouri and banking on a letdown spot for A&M. Unranked home dogs vs ranked opponents are 18-10 ATS (64 percent) this season.


Saturday 3:30 p.m. ET: Purdue at Iowa

This Big Ten grudge match is currently the most heavily bet game of the afternoon. Purdue (3-2 SU, 2-3 ATS) started the season 2-0 but has since lost two straight, most recently falling to Minnesota 20-13, losing outright as 2.5-point home favorites. Meanwhile, Iowa (6-0 SU, 5-1 ATS) is undefeated and ranked 2nd in the country. The Hawkeyes just outlasted Penn State 23-20, covering as 2.5-point home favorites. This line opened with Iowa listed as a 12.5-point home favorite. The public is happy to ride the red-hot Hawkeyes and lay the double-digit spread. However, this line has actually dipped from 12.5 to 11.5. This indicates some sharp reverse line movement on road dog Purdue. Unranked conference dogs against ranked opponents are 22-17 ATS (56 percent) this season. Purdue enjoys a rest advantage as they are coming off a bye week while Iowa played last Saturday. The Boilermakers also have value as a double-digit dog with a low total (43).

Army has failed to cover 5 of 6 with rest, 4 of 5 as a road dog as well as 4 of 5 after allowing less than 100 on the ground. Normally this would be a trap game for a power conference in the middle of their league schedule. The Oklahoma State Cowboys at The Texas Longhorns
(Saturday, October 16th at 12:00 noon ET)

Texas just lost momentum against Oklahoma last Saturday.
They were innovative and wired to start the game, but made
the Sooners look like world champs in the 4th quarter.
I'm not sure they are.
In defense of Texas, you wouldn't know it, because they built
a big lead in the first half, but their defense was on the field longer,
and wore down.

The Cowboys may have played a little easier strength of schedule,
but have one of the better defenses in the country.
Probably better than the Sooners.

The Brigham Young Cougars at The Baylor Bears

BYU has been playing better than expected after returning
less players than almost any team in the country.
Baylor is talented and should be in a major bowl game.
Their wins have been a little more convincing with a tougher strength of schedule.

I like The Baylor Bears -4.5

The Iowa State Cyclones at The Kansas State Wildcats
(Saturday, October 16th at 7:30 PM ET)

Many seem to like the Under because Iowa State's defense is ranked
third in the country and they've had a pretty tough strength of schedule.

Let's look at the games/competition:
Game #1: Northern Iowa who is FCS
Game #2: Iowa who almost always has very low totals
Game #3: UNLV with a 45 point lead and the brakes on in the 4th quarter
Game #4: Baylor with 60 points scored in the game
Game:#5: Beat Kansas 59 to 7 in another non-competitive game

Conversely, Kansas State has played some of the best non-SEC defenses
in the country and averaged just about above Saturday's total in every contest.

The weather should be cooperative
I had this number at 59.

Both teams come into this game sitting at 3-3 in the MAC Conference. Central Michigan has been pretty bad against the pass which should concern them today against a Toledo team that has a lot of very good receivers. The injury bug has hit the CMU Offense pretty hard this year as a lot of good running backs and receivers are sidelined. Toledo has the better football team on both sides of the football. Both defenses returned most of their starters from last year, but the Rockets returned 24 of their top 24 tacklers from last year which is almost unheard of in college football. Take Toledo.

It's the “square” play on the board and you are getting NO line value whatsoever, but I still can't help myself. Florida should crush LSU this afternoon. Here's the list of players that LSU has lost over the last two weeks:

WR Kayshon Boutte was leading the country in touchdowns when he got injured.
In LSU's six games this season, the Tigers have used five different offensive line combinations. That's a recipe for disaster against one of the best defensive lines in the country. On the flip side, Florida will be getting significant starters back this week. Projected first-round cornerback Kaiir Elam will return this week along with starting left tackle Richard Gouraige.
Tiger Stadium was less-than-full in LSU's last game against Auburn, and we are likely to see a similar scene for this 11am ET kickoff. This will not be the “Death Valley” that's one of the most intimidating venues in college football. Coach O's coffin is being prepared, and Florida would love to deliver the final nail.

I played against Eastern Michigan last week. I lost. I'm going back to the well again. If they beat me again, well, I'll tip my cap and move on. The Eagles are 10-17 straight-up in their last 27 conference home games. No, the 2004 meeting between these two teams doesn't affect Saturday's game. But, Ball State holds a 15-7 advantage in this series. There's a talent gap between these two teams.
So far this season, Eastern Michigan has played Wisconsin (No. 24 in the Sagarin ratings), St Francis (No. 211), UMass (No. 180), Texas State (No. 150), Northern Illinois (No. 81) and Miami, Ohio (No. 104). That is an atrocious schedule. Ball State has played Army, Penn State, Toledo, Western Michigan and Wyoming. That's practically a different sport compared to what Eastern Michigan has played.
Ball State had some injury issues in the beginning of the season, but that's going to happen when you play against Penn State and Army. Those have been addressed, and the Cardinals' defense put on a fantastic performance last week. QB Drew Plitt is a 23-year-old fifth-year senior for Ball State. The Cardinals will have a pretty significant advantage at quarterback. If EMU beats me again, then I'll tip my cap. But for now, I'm laying the very small number with Ball State.

Manny Diaz is almost assuredly going to be fired in the very near future. The No. 1 (D'Eriq King) and No. 2 (Jake Garcia) quarterbacks are both out. The Hurricanes are 2-3 and will likely be underdogs in most of their remaining games, which means a bowl berth is unlikely (and would they want to go anyway?). There was a fight at practice last week, which resulted in a players-only meeting. Diaz said there's friction in the locker room because he's attempting to give younger guys playing time, but the older players are unwilling to give up their spot. They are a mess.
Take a look at Miami's resume, and there's not a single thing that they do well: No. 92 in offensive success rate; No. 99 in defensive success rate; No. 105 in points per dive on offense; No. 100 in points allowed per drive on defense; No. 87 in 3rd and 4th down success on offense; and No. 87 in 3rd and 4th down success on defense. There's not one area of the team that you can point to and say, “Well, they're pretty good there…” And that was with a very talented, experience quarterback. Now, you're introducing a freshman making his second appearance on the road.
Shop Around! There are still a handful of -7's available, including Circa (-110); SuperBook Sports (-110); and William Hill (-120). At -7, this is a 4-unit play for me. If it moves to -7.5 across the board, knock your unit size down a bit but this is still a strong play for me.

Tip your cap to UTSA for a fantastic start to the season, but the Road Runners have always been the “hunters” in Conference USA and now they are the hunted. UTSA played Illinois, Memphis and UNLV in their non-conference schedule. The Illini are a mess, UNLV hasn't won a game in two years and Memphis lost to Temple and Tulsa. How much stock are we putting into UTSA's undefeated record? Meanwhile, Rice played Arkansas, Texas and Houston. There's a little bit of a disparity there, dontcha think? UTSA wants to run the ball with Sincere McCormick. They don't have a run-and-gun passing offense that's capable of running up the score. Tossing out FCS-level Lamar, UTSA's wins have come by 7, 14, 3, 7 and 6. In their preseason NCAAF guide, The GoldSheet posted their projected spreads for every game this season. Before the season, they had this lined at UTSA -8. Have you seen enough out of either team to warrant such a steep adjustment to the -17 line we're currently seeing?

Even though they played Clemson two weeks ago, Boston College's strength of schedule remains one of the worst in FBS college football. The Eagles allowed 28 points to a UMass team that's 1-5 and was tied with UConn in the fourth quarter last week. The Eagles went to overtime with Missouri, who just gave up 62 points last week and has failed to cover the point spread in nine-straight games. The Eagles were out-gained by Temple, who has lost by scores of 61-14 and 52-3 so far this season. Look through Boston College's box scores this season and there really isn't much to like.
By now, we've figured out the teams that NC State struggles with: Teams that can make explosive plays through the air. Austin Kendall from Louisiana Tech was 26-of-43 for 341 yards and three touchdowns. Will Rogers from Mississippi State was 33-of-49 for 294 yards and two touchdowns. Boston College doesn't have that. Dennis Grosel has a 56.2-percent completion percentage in his career with a 19-to-10 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Clemson held Boston college to 13 points and 4.8 yards per play two weeks ago. NC State is very capable of putting on a similar performance. NC State's defense is No. 1 in 3rd and 4th down success rate; No. 9 in points allowed per drive; and No. 18 in defensive success rate.
At -3 (-115 or better) this is a 4-unit play for me. Shop around. At the time of posting, there are plenty of affordable -3's out there. If the line moves to -3.5 across the board, knock your unit size down a hair, but it's still a play for me.

7 Unit Play #153 Ball State -1 over Eastern Michigan (2:00pm est):

Most forget that Ball State won the MAC title last season going 7-1 overall and they returned nearly every one this year. The Cardinals got off to a slower than expected this year but much of that had to do with having to play a tough schedule early on. They had to go into Penn State where they were no match for one of the better programs in the country. The next week they had to travel again and play at one of the tougher places in all of CFB at Wyoming and had to deal with not only the high altitude there but also game time temperatures that were in the 80's. The following week the Cardinals played what most feel is the premier program in their conference next as they hosted a Toledo team that was off two straight losses and who were also looking for revenge for losses to Ball State the past two seasons. After three straight defeats it didn't look to be getting any easier for them their next game as they went up against an undefeated Army team that came into the game averaging 39 points per game. The Cardinals played their best game of the year in that one jumping out to a 21-0 lead in the 1st half and rolling to a 12 point victory while holding the Black Knights to just 16 points in the game. Last week Ball State had another big test going on the road to face a Western Michigan team who up till then looked to be the best team in the conference this year but Ball State went toe toe with the Broncos and pulled away late for another excellent performance.

On the other side of things Eastern Michigan is off to a decent 4-2 start to their season but they have also played one of the easiest schedules in CFB thus far. One of their wins this year at home over Texas State was a blowout victory but TSU was down more than 20 players in that game from covid. EMU went on the road to open conference play at the beginning of October and they lost 27-20 to Northern Illinois in a game that NIU pushed them around up front with 200+ yards rushing than the Eagles and 5 sacks overall to a 0 from EMU. Last week Eastern Michigan got a one point win over Miami Ohio but they probably shouldn't have won that game as they were out-gained by more than 100 yards in the game and were also facing a backup quarterback as well.

This is a big game for a veteran Ball State team looking to defend their conference title. I expect them to step up here and take care of business against an opponent they have a talent edge over. Take Ball State.
