Let’s get to the quick MAC caps for tonight.

Like I mentioned last week, these are tough handicaps because this conference is all over the map. NFL officiating, melted ice cream and the flight of a fly are all more consistent than the teams in this league. But, I’ll try to provide some insights on today’s games.

Buffalo at Miami (OH) (-7.5, 57)
Giving up 56 points to Bowling Green is bad for a team’s perception. Just ask Buffalo. The Bulls are over a touchdown underdog this week to Miami and the line has inched up slightly over the last couple of days. You look at Buffalo’s recent body of work and you wonder how this team hung with Coastal Carolina and actually played halfway decent against Nebraska.

Miami’s most recent performance wasn’t a good one either with a loss to Ohio, who scored 35 points to end a three-game losing streak. Trusting either one of these teams is tough, but the betting markets are showing at least some mild sharp interest in the RedHawks.

Buffalo’s defense is one of the worst in the country, allowing 6.36 yards per play. Miami’s offense actually ranks 42nd in yards per play, so that seems to be the difference here. I think all three MAC totals are a little bit inflated tonight based on what we saw last week, but if the games do end up tailoring to offense, that helps Miami.

A slight lean to the under here, but nothing more.

Ohio at Eastern Michigan (-6, 60.5)
Easily the craziest MAC game last week was Eastern Michigan vs. Toledo, which ended 52-49. Neither offense looked ripe for that kind of performance, as my under bet went down in flames very early. The Eagles may not score a 50-burger for the third week in a row, but their offense has been much better than many expected.

Ohio is 1-3 over the last four games and they’ve been decided by a total of 13 points. Because the Bobcats run the ball so much, they’ve been able to keep games close. EMU’s run defense ranks 109th in the nation. Ohio’s is 111th, but the Eagles are only averaging 3.3 yards per carry. They need to throw the ball to be effective and Ben Bryant has done a nice job of that.

One huge difference between these two teams is red zone success. Eastern Michigan is 22nd in TD% and Ohio is 121st. EMU also has a big edge in third-down conversion rate as a top-20 offense in that department. Ohio is 94th. I’m not sure what kind of craziness the second half brings, but I like Eastern Michigan in the first half on the gray turf with some of those advantages on third down and in the red zone likely to play a role early. This is a smaller bet than normal for me.

Pick: Eastern Michigan -3.5 1H

Akron at Western Michigan (-25, 62)
Akron fired head coach Tom Arth after last week’s loss. The interim head coach is Oscar Rodriguez Jr., a man that has beaten cancer twice and served as the associate head coach. We always wonder how teams will react to the firing of a head coach. Usually they rally, at least for one game. Rodriguez seems like the kind of interim a team rallies for.

The Zips are not a good football team and look to be outgunned in this game, but they are getting a 25-point head start here in a game with a total of 62. The WMU team that you see now is not the one that somehow beat Pitt earlier in the year. They’ve lost three of four and only led Kent State by six at the half in the 64-31 win, as that game just spiraled out of control quickly for the Flashes.

It’s not a big play by any means, but we should see a really inspired effort from the Zips tonight and I think they can hang within this number. This is a smaller bet for me as well. This conference is just unpredictable, but I think it’s worth a look.

Monday Myths: Is Aqueduct a Bettors' Letdown?

Welcome to a continuing handicapping series for our Monday blog space, “Monday Myths.” Each week I’ll use the power of the Betmix database to take common handicapping assumptions and either support or dispel them with data. Betmix data powers the 1/ST BET app and its features like Angler and Birddog give data-minded horseplayers a treasure trove of information in which to query your own curiosities.

Assumption:

The opening of Aqueduct is a letdown for bettors of the New York circuit.

Background:

The year-round racing schedule in New York shifts to Aqueduct on Thursday and will continue at the winter stomping grounds until next spring. Sure, it’s not the coliseum at Belmont nor the cathedral at Saratoga in terms of a physical plant. And while the racing product, too, is an obvious drop-off, the real question poised to those betting the horses here: Is the betting also a letdown?

I dialed up the Betmix database for the past 5 years and looked at all results at Aqueduct, Belmont and Saratoga to get a feel for just how similar or different the results are between the NYRA circuit locales. I wanted to see the average win odds, percentage of winning favorites and likelihood of longshots (10-1) on the racing product. The everyday racing notwithstanding, I wanted to see how stakes races also compared at these betting markers since Belmont and Saratoga are so renowned for their championship quality.

The average win odds at Belmont has been 5.08-1.
The average win odds at Saratoga has been 5.00-1.

Favorites win 35.6% at Aqueduct.
Favorites win 35.6% at Belmont.
Favorites win 34.2% at Saratoga.

The average win odds at Aqueduct in stakes races has been 5.22-1.
The average win odds at Belmont in stakes races has been 4.51-1.
The average win odds at Saratoga in stakes races has been 4.65-1.

Stakes favorites win 38.5% at Saratoga

Stakes horses 10-1 or more have a 4.0% win rate at Aqueduct.
Stakes horses 10-1 or more have a 3.7% win rate at Belmont.
Stakes horses 10-1 or more have a 4.1% win rate at Saratoga.

Overall Findings:

Aqueduct produces a slightly lower average win payout than Belmont or Saratoga, but only .11 and .19 lower per odds point, meaning 22 cents and 38 cents per $2 wager. The percentage of winning favorites at Belmont and Aqueduct is identical with Saratoga 1.4% less likely for favorites. When it comes to upsets, Aqueduct is slightly less likely to produce an upset winner by .2% compared to Belmont and Saratoga. In the stakes races, Aqueduct has produced slightly higher average payoffs and a corresponding lower rate of winning favorites.

Bottom line:

The aesthetics are different, the quality of horses different, and more dirt racing than turf, but the results the past 5 years at Aqueduct mirror what we see on the NYRA circuit at its sister tracks, Belmont and Saratoga. There’s no massive shift in results at any of these three venues. From a betting standpoint, there’s no letdown at the Big A.

Charlie the best bet

Race 8 at Parx on Tuesday is an $18,000 Claiming contest, and the Jamie Ness-trained Dig Charlie Dig is a standout bet.

He doesn’t have the best of strike rates, but this six-time winner gained one of those victories at Parx back in September 2020. His most recent victory came at Pimlico three starts ago, winning an allowance contest in comfortable fashion.

The key trend about his form is that it has come at higher levels, including a second in a $29,000 starter optional claiming race at Parx two starts back. This is a sizable drop in grade, and a wide draw doesn’t temper enthusiasm in him.

His consistency makes him a strong and reliable bet, too, with form figures of 243222128 in 2021. He’s likely to be played late by Ruben Silvera, but he can also race close to the pace, and that versatility is another tick in the correct box.

Pitched into the lowest grade he’s faced in over a year; he’s going to be very tough to stop in his bid for a seventh-career success.

Race 9 is a $45,000 Allowance contest, and Penny Pearce’s I Am Redeemed can get his career back on track.

He’s raced exclusively at Parx thus far, winning three of his six starts. That includes a $35,000 allowance victory and a stakes success in the form of the Storm Cat back in August.

It was no surprise to see him pitched into the Grade 1 Pennsylvania Derby on his fifth start, but he was ultimately outclassed. Better was expected in the M.P. Ballezzi Appreciation Mile last time, but a wide trip ultimately cost him a chance of featuring.

Although that was a shade disappointing, he’s now back down in grade, and it’s still very early days for this classy son of Redeemed. He does have the widest stall to negotiate, but his early pace should allow Abner Adorno to find a handy position.

The form of his sole allowance win at Parx has worked out well subsequently, and the form of Pearce’s string is another big positive. He’s won with 26% of his last 50 runners, and this three-year-old could be another in the win column.

Race 7 is a $26,000 Claiming contest, and Elias Tapsas’s Mach Trial can engage top speed under Dexter Haddock.

A nine-time winner in his career, five of those victories have come at Parx. He recently won an $18,000 contest over track and distance, swinging wide but readily taking command for a comfortable score.

In two subsequent starts, he ran to similar figures, including a fair fourth in a $35,000 claiming race. That sort of form gives him a huge chance in this field and his morning line odds of 8-1 look generous.

He’s drawn well in post two, and he should get the perfect rail trip, where he can save all the ground. If the gaps open in the straight, he’ll be staying on best of all late, and he shouldn’t be far away from the show.

#5 Martinkelly Seems like there is going to be plenty going on near the top, and this guy and occasional finishing gear that might allow him to settle back off the splits and rally late at a price.
#6 Jebologist He should be able to work out a good pressing trip from this wide draw, but he has had a tendency to settle for a lot of underneath slices with similar.
#3 Hard Belle He is in with a chance here with a mild rating ability that may serve him well, but I worry that he's going to get overbet in this spot. His best stuff keeps him right there, but he doesn't always bring his A-game at a short price.
Race Summary Martinkelly would benefit if all the slightly speedier types were to go from the gate, and he isn't too far off what some of these can offer, but he'll be showing a better price on the board.

Penn National - Race #6
Picks Notes
#3 Maldives Model She comes down in class out of that stakes try, and she was a winner with open company at this condition a couple starts back while racing on the turf. The dirt form stacks up fine in a modest spot.
#7 Cloud Skipping She turned in a good effort when getting around two turns for the first time in that last one, and these invading types from Parx usually tend to class up nicely with the locals.
#8 Glowing Star The form here can be inconsistent, but her best stuff would keep her in the frame late with these. Still, she probably doesn't offer a fair price on the board for this team.
Race Summary Maldives Model would feel very attractive at anything like the 3/1 ML price while getting down in class, and she can come rolling late from off the pace. She's a pretty reliable type through nine career starts, and I'll lean heavily on her here.

Penn National - Race #8
Picks Notes
#8 False Ruling I'm a bit concerned about her facing some other chasing types, but she'll get Lasix for the first time today after a couple of hard fade jobs to open her career. Demand a fair price on what figures to be an all or nothing runner.
#6 Caprichosa Thought about putting her on top, but she's out of excuses after a dozen starts. That said, the race shape might work in her favor when many of these are going to be going the wrong way late. Steady grinding effort keeps her there.
#10 Emilia Strong She's a really serious player here, but this is her 30th career start, and it's not like she's a serious threat at the wire in most of those recent losses. Capable player isn't for me.
Race Summary Tough read in a race where the most obvious horses have 29, 12, 23 and 24 starts to their respective names, and False Ruling at least only has two. She presumably has some upside here while racing with Lasix for the first time, and maybe she gets brave on the front end and discourages some chasers.

Race Summary Zoe Ellasen sped the middle half in :56 and maintained his margin to the wire. She can rate and can handle the class hike with a duplicate performance. Bet on her to win and place.

#6 LYONS LIBERTY Met better at Harrah's Philadelphia in spring, question of readiness.

Philadelphia has covered the point spread in 4 straight games when playing without rest. The 76ers have also covered the point spread in 6 of their last 8 games after a straight-up loss. Milwaukee (4-6) has lost two in a row and five of their last six games after their 101-94 loss at Washington on Sunday. The Bucks have failed to cover the point spread in 4 straight games against teams with a winning percentage over 60%. Tuesday NHL Free play. My selection is on Edmonton over Detroit at 7:35 pm et on Tuesday.
This is a fairly straight-forward selection with the Oilers absolutely rolling right now and the Red Wings coming off consecutive wins and certainly in line for a letdown here. Note that Detroit has won back-to-back games twice previously this season and on both occasions it followed up those performances with a loss, outscored by a combined 6-2 margin. The Oilers check in a fantastic 21-7 the last 28 times they've come off a game where they gave up five or more goals, as is the case here following last Friday's wild 6-5 win over the Rangers. They've outscored the opposition by an average margin of 1.2 goals in that situation. Interestingly, Edmonton has averaged a whopping 4.3 goals when coming off a home win where it scored four goals or more over the last two seasons, outscoring opponents by 0.8 goals on average in that spot (14-game sample size). Meanwhile, the Red Wings check in averaging a woeful 1.6 goals when playing at home after scoring three goals or more in consecutive games going back to last season (nine previous occasions). Oklahoma State went 21-9 and was a No. 4 seed in last season's NCAA Tournament. That was last year.
I don't see the Cowboys stomping UT Arlington by nearly the margin that this point spread suggests.
Gone from the Cowboys' lineup is superstar Cade Cunningham, the first overall pick in the NBA draft. Then the Cowboys received tough news from the NCAA, which rejected their appeal and upheld a ruling banning Oklahoma State from playing in the 2022 NCAA Tournament. That's a tough mental blow.
Arlington returns an experienced roster from last season's 13-13 team. The Mavericks opened with an exhibition win against Southeast Oklahoma State a week ago. Greg Young, a long-time assistant, is now the Mavericks' head coach. He's not afraid to play at Oklahoma State's fast tempo. Arlington should be a lot more motivated in this game than Oklahoma State.

This is a play on the PITTSBURGH PENGUINS for our NHL Tuesday Free Play. Pittsburgh enters Tuesday having lost four of its last five games including a 5-4 loss to Minnesota on Saturday. The Penguins are now in last place in the Metropolitan Division at 4-3-1-2 and this includes a 1-0-1-0 record on the road. The offense has been average due to the injury list that they have had to endure with and the defense needs to help and carry the load. In the two road games, Pittsburgh has yet to allow a power play goal and on the season, the Penguins have allowed only two power play goals in 24 opportunities and that 91.7 percent penalty kill is the best in the NHL. The Penguins are 8-3 in their last 11 games against teams with a losing record. Chicago is coming off a win over Nashville to move to 2-9-2-0. The offense has been awful as the Blackhawks are averaging 2.15 gpg which is third worst in the NHL and their 7.3 shooting percentage is also third worst. Chicago is up there in the penalty kill as well but they have committed 42 penalties which is seventh most in the league so Pittsburgh needs to take advantage of those mistakes. Chicago is 4-15 in its last 19 home games off a home win. Here, we play against home underdogs of +100 to +150 against the money line off a win against a division rival, with a losing record in the first half of the season. Navy returns four starters and 10 letter winners after the basketball program that went 15-3 overall and 12-1 SU in the conference action last season losing only once in regulation and pulling off a straight up upset at Georgetown. Not saying the Cavaliers are not a top tier team, but their offensive cohesiveness/chemistry would be a concern here early on as new faces dot their side of the hardwood.

They are in a good spot here having yesterday off while the Atlanta Hawks will be playing the second of a back-to-back and their fifth game in seven days. Now they have to go into altitude in Salt Lake City. The Hawks have been playing awful as it is, going 1-6 SU in their last seven games and 1-7 ATS in their last eight games. They just lost by 14 on the road to a Warriors team last night that was playing the second of a back-to-back themselves. It won't get any easier against the Jazz tonight given the tough rest spot. This number might look like Utah is laying a few too many, but the spot couldn't be much worse for Atlanta. After giving up 50 to Steph Curry in last night's 113-127 loss at Golden State, the Hawks are now tasked with one of the more difficult back-to-back scenarios, having to play that second game in altitude at Utah.
On top of that, you got a Jazz team that should be highly motivated off two straight losses, the most recent being an absolute stinker in a 100-107 setback at Orlando as a 11-point favorite. Let's also not overlook the fact that these two teams just played in Atlanta last week and the Jazz cruised to a 116-98 win. This is also not the Hawks team we expected to see to start the year. Atlanta is just 4-7 SU and 3-8 ATS. That includes a 1-7 ATS run over their last 8 games. Give me the Jazz -8!

There is no other way to put it, the VGK is a MASH unit and missing better than 40% of it's cap space with Stone, Pacioretty, and Karlson all out for extended time. The Knights are filling in where it can with the players from the Henderson AHL team and whoever is left. That said, Robin Lehner has kept the team in most games and the Knights have somehow managed to not get buried to this point and are playing .500 hockey. The Kraken have been competitive but have struggled (1-5-1) on the road including a 4-3 loss on this ice in their first ever NHL game. VGK back from an East Coast trip where they split four games and should be well rested and ready to go here. Take Las Vegas.

While the Ducks have been hot, they're current winning streak has come at home. Keep in mind that Anaheim was the lowest-scoring team in the entire league last season, managing a mere 2.1 goals per game. While they've been much better so far this season, it's still early. The Canucks are off a big win of their won. That 6-3 victory will provide some momentum. The Canucks know that they hit the road for some tough games after this. Armed with this knowledge, they're going to go all out at home tonight. I expect them to get it done. Consider Vancouver.
