Horseplayers on the Xpressbet and 1/ST BET platforms can take part in Saturday's Gulfstream Park late pick 4 hit-and-split promotion. Win your late pick 4 bet and split $2000 in additional cash with other horseplayers on the platform who found success.

Field Depth:
KING GUILLERMO is the only Grade 2 domestic winner in the field, and that came on dirt. SPACE TRAVELLER won a Group 2 in Ireland in 2019. Grade 3 winners in the lineup include ANALYZE IT, ENGLISH BEE and SOLE VOLANTE. The toughest company lines of late obviously belong to SPACE TRAVELLER in this group, who holds the class edge.

Pace:
The tempo should be fair-to-quick for this distance with DOSWELL, RENAISSANCE FROLIC, ANALYZE IT and ORDER AND LAW all wanting to press the pace that could be set by KING GUILLERMO. The pace would shift to fast if also-eligible BROWN STORM was to draw into the race.

Our Eyes:
SPACE TRAVELLER starts from the 12-hole, so Tyler Gaffalione will have to work out a trip over the narrowed GP turf course since September's unveiling of the Tapeta track. With some early pace in posts 6,8,9 and 10, it might not be as wide of a trip as the worst-case scenario. He's working very well for this and should be a big late danger.

Chad Brown, who won this race in 2019 with Instilled Regard, sends out ANALYZE IT and L'IMPERADOR, the former possessing the deeper domestic resume, but the latter perhaps being the 'now' horse. The draw and pace scenario also favor L'IMPERADOR and I like the jockey change to John Velazquez on Saturday. ANALYZE IT did wire a Belmont allowance last time out in October, but he's lost ground in the final chart call in nearly all of his starts and may be dependent on an easier pace than he'll get Saturday. ANALYZE IT has lost 5 of his last 7 when favored, so he's had plenty of chances.

Mike Maker, winner of the 2018 Fort Lauderdale with Shining Copper, counters with the trio of MEDIA BLITZ, ORDER AND LAW and ATONED. SoCal transplant MEDIA BLITZ has been first or second in all 4 lifetime starts at this distance; ORDER AND LAW also comes east off the Maker claim but stretches out from his typical mile trip; and ATONE has won 2 of his last 3 since coming to this barn. MEDIA BLITZ interests the most among this threesome that looks pretty similar on paper.

Last year's Fort Lauderdale 2-3 finishers re-match in DOSWELL and BREAKING THE RULES. Both hit similar spots in their form cycles, a few races back after extended breaks for much of 2021. BREAKING THE RULES might be slightly sharper coming out of mile races than DOSWELL, who has been going closer to marathon trips. The solid early pace expected here also would tilt the edge to late-running BREAKING THE RULES in this head-to-head.

Course winners ENGLISH BEE, RENAISSANCE FROLIC and SOLE VOLANTE defend home turf, but it's RENAISSANCE FROLIC who seems to have the course advantage. His 4 wins on this turf lifetime are more than the rest of the field's 3-for-15 record combined.

Most Certain Exotics Contender:
L'EMPERADOR has improved his margin in the last call of every start since coming to the US and catches a stakes field on the class rise that's not beyond his scope.

Best Longshot Exotics Contender:
KING GUILLERMO has the ability to pop a big effort, but lacks consistency. His lightning workout for this indicates he's on tilt and will try to take them as far as his speed will allow. That could find him holding on for a share on his best effort at a nice price.

Sending it in ($100 bankroll):
$80 win L'IMPERADOR. $10 exacta box L'IMPERADOR and SPACE TRAVELLER ($20).

Best Horse Racing Bets for Saturday, December 18, 2021
By J.W. Paine in Horse Racing

The three tracks I surveyed for my Saturday horseracing picks provided us with a stakes-rich environment for our underdog scouting and wagering pleasure.

Laurel Park and Mahoning Valley Race Course each offered a couple of state stakes races, while Turfway Park features the Prairie Bayou Stakes (Listed).

You can get the full story on all the horses in all the races with a quick visit to our recommended online racebooks.

Good luck!
Saturday’s Picks for Laurel Park

Let’s begin on the dirt track with race six, a six-furlong allowance run for fillies and mares three years old and upward. I’m backing the 7/5 morning-line favorite for this race—Fraudulent Charge piloted by Johan Rosado.

This three-year-old filly finished in the money for all seven of her career starts, winning one. Even in this very competitive field of ten, she’s a standout, finishing second in each of her four stakes races, the most recent being the Safely Kept Stakes (Listed) last month at Laurel Park.

Lacey Gaudet trains Fraudulent Charge for owners Team Gaudet and Five Hellions Farm. Gaudet has put Rosado in the irons for all seven of Fraudulent Charge’s races.

Race seven is the Maryland Juvenile Fillies Championship Stakes, a $100,000 purse, seven-furlong run on the main track for Maryland-bred or sired two-year-old fillies. I’m betting on the 7/2 second-favored Luna Belle, ridden by top jockey Denis Araujo.
Unlike the favorite, this filly has moneyed a stakes race. For the record, Luna Belle finished in the money four of her six career starts, winning one. She most recently finished second in the Smart Halo Stakes (Black Type) last month at Laurel Park.

Longtime racing veteran and co-owner Hamilton A. Smith trains Luna Belle for Deborah S. Greene and himself.

Race eight is the Maryland Juvenile Championship Stakes, a $100,000 purse, seven-furlong run on the main track for Maryland-bred or -sired two-year-olds. I’m calling this one for the third-favored (at 61) Coastal Mission, with Arnaldo Bocachica in the irons.

This gelding finished in the money for both of his career starts, winning his initial maiden attempt at Charles Town in September, then placing second in the Maryland Million Nursery Stakes (Black Type) at Laurel Park in October. Incidentally, this race’s 9/2 favorite—Local Motive—finished third in that stakes race.

The regularly top-100 ranked trainer Jeff C. Runco trains Coastal Mission for owner-breeder Coleswood Farm, Inc.
Saturday Picks for Mahoning Valley Race Course

We’re on the main track for race four, a six-furlong allowance race for Ohio-bred three-year-olds and upward that have never won four races. I like the 5/2 second-favored Wapakoneta Phil, ridden by veteran jockey T.D. Houghton.

This four-year-old gelding finished seven of his nine career starts in the money, winning his second maiden try at Thistledown last fall, an allowance race there shortly thereafter, and most recently, an allowance race at Thistledown in October. He’ll do.

Candace M. Huffman trains Wapakoneta Phil for J S Stable.

Race six is the Joshua Radosevich Memorial Stakes, a $75,000 purse, six-furlong dirt track run for Ohio-bred two-year-olds. I’m going to agree with the morning-line here and bet my two dollars on the 7/5 favorite, Thedayofthegrey, with Sonny Leon aboard.
This gelding finished in the money four of his five career starts, winning three, including the Best of Ohio Cleveland Kindergarten Stakes (Black Type) at Thistledown in August and the Loyalty Stakes (Black Type) at Belterra Park in September.

He ran out of gas in the home stretch in his most recent stakes challenge—the 1-1/16-mile Best of Ohio Juvenile Stakes (Black Type)—but at the shorter distance of this race he should do just fine.

Co-owner and thirty-year racing veteran Robert C. Cline trains Thedayofthegrey for himself and Richard M. Wilkinson.

Race seven is the Bobbie Bricker Memorial Handicap, a $75,000 purse, one mile and 70 yards stakes race for Ohio-bred fillies and mares three years old and upward. My money’s on the second-favored (at 4/1) Star Rules, with Jeffrey Sanchez in the irons.

This four-year-old filly moneyed nine of her 14 career starts, winning three, including her most recent. Notably, she finished second in both the Miss Southern Ohio Stakes at Belterra Park in September and the Ohio Debutante Handicap at Mahoning Valley last month. She scored all three of her wins in 2021.

James H. McDonald trains Star Rules for owner-breeder Doris Tummillo. Jeffrey Sanchez saddled Star Rules for her most recent victory.
My Saturday Picks for Turfway Park

We’re on the all-weather track for race five—the Prairie Bayou Stakes, 1-1/16 miles run for three-year-olds and upward. I must agree with the morning line that the 3/1 favorite, Snapper Sinclair, is the right wager for this race. He’s saddled this run by top jockey Rafael Bejarano.

As you might expect, this six-year-old has been quite aggressively campaigned at the stakes level and has garnered plenty of proof that he belongs there: 20 money finishes in 35 career starts, seven of those wins, including the Fasig-Tipton Turf Showcase Juvenile Stakes (Black Type) in 2017, the Tourist Mile Stakes (Listed) in 2019, and the TVG Stakes (Listed) in September.

If nothing else, this horse has staying power.

Steven M. Asmussen trains Snapper Sinclair for Bloom Racing Stable LLC (Jeffrey Bloom).

Race six is a 6-1/2 furlong allowance optional claiming race on the all-weather track for three-year-olds and upward. I’m betting my two dollars on the 7/2 second-favored Soaring Bird, ridden by Chase Miller.
While the favorite, Greener Pastures, has the best of it as far as overall records go, my choice of Soaring Bird has more to do with what kind of year 2021 has been. And this year, this six-year-old gelding has moneyed every single one of his eight starts, winning two.

In comparison, Greener Pastures finished in the money six of his ten 2021 starts, with three wins.

Waylon Cundiff trains Soaring Bird for owners Louis Hoagland, Gary Flood, and Michael David Portman.

Race seven is a 6-1/2 furlong allowance optional claiming race on the all-weather track for three-year-olds and upward. I gotta back the 8/5 morning-line favorite here: Visitant, ridden by veteran jockey Gerardo Corrales.

This five-year-old finishes teen of his 13 career starts in the money, winning six, including the Alcatraz Stakes (Black Type) at Golden Gate Fields in 2019 and the Kentucky Cup Classic Stakes (Listed) at Turfway Park in March of 2021.

He also finished second in the Alysheba Stakes (Grade II) at Churchill Downs in April. He’s got this.

Twenty-year racing veteran William E. Morey trains Visitant for owner-breeder Williamson Racing LLC.

Most Likely Winner: (Race 1: Early Voting #7, 5/2):

I do not normally back 1st time starters because you just never know if they really understand that a race is going on … But sometimes you come across a field that you know is going to have a hard time against them. This is one of those few moments … Chad Brown has some strong numbers when it comes to runners like these, and his colt by Gun Runner looks poised to break his maiden the 1st time out. When this conditioner gets together with Jose Ortiz, they can be downright unstoppable. Bet this one to “win” …

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #7

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 6: Bustin Pietre #2, 8/1):

Here is a nice value play for your Saturday that is trainer by Bruce Levine and ridden by Kendrick Carmouche. I like to see these 2 get together because they work in concert quite well. This gelding by Bustin Stones stepped up from an MC50k into a BT 100k last time, and did not disappoint. He went on nicely, and even though he was 8 lengths back in the end, it was still a game effort for 2nd. Stretching out a bit from 6F to 7F should not be an issue, and Carmouche is up for a 3rd time. This 2-yr-old has some major upside, and I think bettors will overlook his fitness level.

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #2 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 8: Dirt, 7F, NY Stallion Series S., $500k, 2F):

The “other” NY Stallion Series race on the docket is probably the tougher of the 2 … depending on how you look at it. Morning Matcha #6 will probably get the nod as the race time favorite, especially since she comes in with a pair of nice wins under her saddle. Those contests were a MSW80k and OC40k at Parx, but make no mistake, the Reid Barn has come to play. Kendrick Carmouche was on board for those scores, so the connections were probably thinking that this race was next. I want to use this runner in my wagering, but frankly, I think this daughter of Central Banker is going to get over bet. Instead, I am much more interested in a better priced filly like Christophe Clement’s Shigeko #11. This one by Japan is moving up in class from running in MSW75k Co., and she took on the slop back at Belmont in fine style. Winning by 6+ lengths, she drew off in a big way. Now, with Dylan Davis up, she could be a great double-digit price when this one goes off from a barn that is superhot. Last but not least, I want to consider another entry from Central Banker’s line named Bank On Anna #9. Here is a filly who dueled down the lane at Aqueduct back in early November, finishing 2nd for Phil Serpe. That MSW70k contest was a tough one, as it saw 11 break from the gate. With Jose Lezcano on board, she has the chance to take a step forward even more in this spot. What a race this one is going to be! Let’s play …

Wagering Recommendation: $2 Trifecta Box, 6/9/11

Most Likely Winner: (Race 6: Flatoutjustice #9, 6/1):

I know it seems odd to back a “Most Likely Winner” that could be in excess of 5/1 on the tote. But I have a strong feeling about this one, and I think Randy Matthews has this gelding by Flat Out pointed in the right direction. He has 48 starts to his credit, and though only 4 of those were wins, I think this spot could be right. Running at Oaklawn is tough, but the folks at Ten Strike Racing invest in some good ones. With Cristian Torres in the saddle, I think this one is a bet. He was double-entered, and Matthews chose to scratch him from the Claiming contest that he was entered in … that speaks to confidence. Let’s play this one to win!

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #9

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 1: Pit Boss #4, 6/1):

There is some major upside to this gelding by Union Rags, and it should not go unnoticed. Even though his speed figs maybe are not exactly where they need to be, the 4-yr-old has a strong late leg kick. If he can get some fairly stiff fractions, then that should help get this one home for Norm Cash. He already has a good Meet going, and I like the talent of Kylee Jordan. She gets the weight relief, and can add another win on her Oaklawn experience.

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #4 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 9: Dirt, 1 1/8th, The Tinsel S., $200k, 3+):

With all the weather rolling through Arkansas, it is tough to know how the track will setup on Saturday. What we do know is that probably the best runner in Robertino Diodoro’s stable, Lone Rock #2 is back at it, after he shipped to Del Mar to run on the BC undercard. He won in fine style in that Grade 2 race, and deserves to be the favorite in this spot. It is a class drop to be sure, and I would expect the 6-yr-old gelding by Majestic Warrior to be well-bet. If Ramon Vasquez gets a decent break, and can rate efficiently, then he probably scores. I am all for playing against this one because I just don’t see much in the way of value. I see this really as a 2-horse race, and would not be surprised to see Brad Cox’s Warrior’s Charge #7 gaming with Diodoro’s ace down the lane. They are both so classy, but I think that Cox’s 5-yr-old is overdue for a score. With Florent Geroux in the irons, he knows this one through and through. What a rubber match this is going to be!

Wagering Recommendation: $2 Exacta Cold, 7 w 2

Rocket Picks : Gulfstream, Oaklawn, and Aqueduct for December 18, 2021

The action continues today as we have hit the weekend! For the free pick 4, we will head to Aqueduct once again today, since we continue to have success at that track. There is also great action at Gulfstream Park and Oaklawn as well. Let’s see if we can hit this late pick 4 at Aqueduct!

Below is our free Late Pick 4 for Aqueduct:

Aqueduct December 18, 2021

Race 6: New York Stallion Series Stakes

#1 Unique Unions will look to make it two in a row today after an impressive maiden special weight win in his last start. #6 Geno moves to the dirt for this race after running three solid races over the turf. If he takes to the surface, he as the talent to get the job done against this group.

Race 7: Starter Allowance

#7 No Burn runs second off of the claim for Morey in this spot after a poor effort last time out. The pace should set up better for him today, though. #3 F F Rocket will get back to the dirt for this race after a complete no show on the turf last time out.

Race 8: New York Stallion Series Stakes

#6 Morning Matcha has looked impressive in her last two starts, winning by multiple lengths at Parx. She should be ready for this race today. #3 Laobans Legacy seems to be improving with each start so far. This small stretch out in distance should be to her liking.

Race 9: Allowance

#2 Uncle George has been solid over the turf, but will move to the dirt today, and has a pedigree that suggests that he will like the surface. #3 Raven Rocks will look to make it two in a row in this spot after a nice win against claiming company in his last start.

Free Horse Racing Tips Today – Saturday, December 18th, 2021
By Rob Davis

We have studied the form from all races across the country for Saturday, December 18th, and provided our best horse racing tips.

Whilst plenty of us are winding down heading into Christmas, the racing action, much like the weather, continues to heat up around the country.

Summer looks to have finally arrived for the final Saturday before Christmas which means we will get to see some tracks rated in the ‘Good’ range and the field sizes stand up. This means we will be betting with plenty of confidence and hopefully lining our Christmas stockings this week.

We have made five selections in total and are confident that we have found you some winners! So, read on below to find our best horse racing tips for this Saturday, December 18th.
Royal Randwick, Race 1 – 2. Himalaism ($4.20)

They don’t come with a much better 2yo pedigree than this I Am Invincible/Snitzerland Colt. Out of a champion stallion who has sired a 2yo Magic Millions winner, by a dam who ran second to Pierro in a Golden Slipper and won a Group 1 Lightning stakes. We think trainer Chris Waller might have been keeping this one under wraps in its two trials to date.

He wasn’t ridden out late when he loomed like he was going to go straight past them in his debut trial, and then was buried away third the fence and not asked to do much in his latest trial. Both of those hitouts have been over 900m but he looks to have had plenty in store when crossing the line and given the grounding they get in this barn, we are confident the 1200 will pose no issues. Looks a very nice horse who can get the punters off to a flying start.
Flemington, Race 2 – 2. Squid Game ($2.60)

This 3yo Shooting to Win gelding did everything right on debut when he crossed from a wide draw and camped outside the leader, Ridden out hands and heels by Michael Dee to score comfortably and he backs up again for the ride Saturday.

Stays at the 1200m and looks to be suited by the long run home at Flemington. There was solid support for him on debut where he didn’t let punters down and we expect the same from him again here.
Flemington, Race 4 – 7. Rose Quartz ($5.00)

This well bred, lightly raced daughter of Written Tycoon is handled by master conditioner Grahame Begg who has plenty of pedigree of his own when it comes to dealing with horses of the fairer sex. We really liked her will to win in her most recent run over the 1140m at Geelong where she knuckled down strongly and savaged the line late.

The step to 1200m and the vast expanses of Flemington looks an ideal place for her to kick off her foray into metropolitan racing. She was well supported at her latest win and we expect those punters to back up here so grab the good odds whilst they are on offer.

Royal Randwick, Race 5 – 1. Mubariz ($11/$3.10)

Really liked the way he found the line first up, but was given absolutely no peace by Tom Sherry last week when he was niggled the whole way and asked to do plenty of work in the run.

He boxed on steadily enough to hold down fourth there and we really like the idea of him backing up here and getting to 2000m, and hopefully apprentice Sherry is all the better for the experience and I think we take it as a positive that Waller has decided to stick with him.

He’s a European breed whose best performances have been around this middle distance trip and he’s adept on all going. Worth an each way ticket at double figure odds.
Royal Randwick, Race 8 – 2. Purple Sector ($8.00/$2.45)

He’s never won below 1500m, never won first up, he’s drawn the outside gate, and he’s certainly never been one of my horses but we think it is very hard to go past him on his recent trial especially given his quality when lined up against this opposition. Half the field are resuming here and his second trial was the most eye-catching of those lot and at close to double figure odds, we think he represents a solid each way betting choice.

He defies his breeding, being by wet track sire Pins, with all his victories coming on a good track which we are sure to get with temperatures ticking into the 30’s on Saturday at Randwick. Rawiller rode him in the trial but with him unavailable you get the next best thing in Hugh Bowman. We can’t see him not running top three against this lot.

Best Bet – 4. Rose Quartz (Flemington, Race 7)
Next Best – 2. Purple Sector (Randwick, Race 8)
Best Roughie – 1. Mubariz (Randwick, Race 5)

Today’s Racing Tips – December 18th

There are six cracking NH races on ITV on Saturday, with Ascot and Haydock staging two top level meetings with big fields and ultra competitive handicaps likely to dominate the betting markets.

The main race of the day is the 2.25pm Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot, where Nicky Henderson’s Buzz is likely to be a warm order to follow up his impressive course win here last month. At Haydock, the Tommy Whittle handicap chase is sure to be ultra competitive and a thorough test of stamina in the soft ground.
Saturday ITV Racing Tips
Time Track Selection Analysis
13:50 ASCOT GUY Nigel Twiston-Davies chaser has shaped really well in defeat twice already this season, jumping well given his relative inexperience, and has conditions to suit at Ascot on Saturday.
14:05 HAYDOCK UP FOR PAROL Jamie Snowden has a cracking team of young horses to go to battle with this winter, and his unexposed novice can revive after disappointing over fences last time out.
14:25 ASCOT BUZZ Nicky Henderson’s progressive hurdler was really impressive when winning here at the last meeting, and that form got a major boost when the third ho,e Guard Your Dreams won the International Hurdle at Cheltenham.
14:40 HAYDOCK VINTAGE CLOUDS Sue Smith’s runners have hot form in the past few weeks, with most just needing a run or two to reach peak fitness, and this reliable stayer has conditions to suit at Haydock on Saturday (with the 5lb claimer Theo Gillard booked a plus).
15:00 ASCOT CLOTH CAP Jonjo O’Neill’s chaser ran a lot better than the bare result when sixth behind Cloudy Glen at Newbury last time out (blundered at the wrong time), and should now be spot on fitness-wise after two runs this season.
15:35 ASCOT WEST CORK Dan Skelton’s lightly raced performer landed quite a touch when returning from a long absence in November, and can defy a lenient rise up the weights under Harry Skelton.

#5 Bench Walk: There are a few in here that may be a bit overbet based on their most recent starts. With 2-year-olds competing within the maiden ranks, I try to avoid judging or overvaluing one performance too harshly. Of course, we can see considerable improvement from one start to the next with adequate changes, or more experience, but sometimes based on workouts, pedigree, and trainer stats, you can find a lot of value to back to a runner in their first start.

His recent workouts have been solid and timing-wise he really looks quick. With a great draw in the center of the gate, I hope to see early speed out of this colt. He’s shown a lot more of it these past few months in the mornings.

Best Bet

Gulfstream Park, Race 9, $150,000 Harlan’s Holiday Stakes, 3:59 p.m. ET

#6 Fearless: He was the beaten favorite in his two most recent outings, but those were versus much tougher. His last outing was his first start in six months, so I would expect him even sharper with a start under his belt. Through four starts at Gulfstream Park, he’s been no worse than second and put forth his career best Brisnet Speed rating of 107 in his second start in Florida.

We’ve seen this colt produce victories off many different types of trips, and meeting a smaller field in here adds even more the appeal in case the break is slow once again. Either way, he’s going to be incredibly tough versus this group and the price should be very short at post. He’ll be a single for me across some of those multi-leg wagers as I search for value in some other races in the sequence.

Best Bet

Gulfstream Park, Race 10, $200,000 Ft. Lauderdale Stakes, 4:32 p.m. ET

#2 L’Imperator: Although his victories haven’t been flashy and his margin of victory is often pretty close, this gelding has been racing extremely well since making the move overseas and landing in the Chad Brown barn. His best efforts have been off stalking trips and he’s looked strong down the lane when he’s found clear racing room.

The race once again could set up very well for him given the inside draw to work with and speed drawing on both sides of him. He should be positioned well with a good shot to track them down late.

Longshot Play

Oaklawn Park, Race 10, 5:40 p.m. ET

#11 Seven Flat: Speaking about considerable improvements from one start to the next, this colt was much better in his second career race while stretching out in distance and showing a bit more early speed. With an outside draw to navigate from, a quicker start will very likely be imperative to avoid traffic trouble down the lane.

Blinkers will be added which could be an important addition to ensure that early speed and he will also be making his first start racing on Lasix (furosemide). As long as he takes another step forward, he looks to be a major player and should offer a nice price at post.

#1 Megacity: The Prairie Bayou Stakes features a field of 11 horses going 1 1/16 miles on dirt. During the first two weeks of the Turfway Park meet, speed held up well on the Tapeta all-weather surface. Although front-runners have not been as strong this week, anyone who has early speed has to be seriously considered nonetheless.

Megacity has won three of his last five races in gate-to-wire style. In a conditioned allowance race on turf at Keeneland last out, he set the early pace and held on to win by 1 1/2 lengths. In the process, he defeated two horses he'll face again here, Big Dreaming and Mr Dumas. He's trying a new surface here, as he has not competed on Tapeta before. However, as long as he takes to the surface, he should be able to lead this field gate-to-wire once again. He has a great post position and dominant speed on a track playing to his style.

#2 Real Money: Gerardo Corrales has established himself as the top jockey at Turfway so far. Through the first two weeks of the season, he's won 13 races from 50 mounts, good for a 26% win rate. No one else won more than five races during the first two weeks.

He's got the mount on Real Money in this race, a first-level allowance optional-claiming race at 6 1/2 furlongs. This 5-year-old gelding is taking a drop in class from second-level races at Fair Grounds and Woodbine. In his last start on the Tapeta at Woodbine, he battled on the lead before tiring late. Now, he's facing an easier field and has speed toward the inside. If he can secure a spot on the lead and toward the inside, he's going to be tough to catch.

Beginner’s Bet of the Week for Dec. 18: The Win Bet
December 16th, 2021 by John Piassek

This week marks the latest installment of a new series on America’s Best Racing, the Beginner’s Bet of the Week, sponsored by NYRA Bets. Each week, this blog will explore a new type of bet by explaining exactly what it is, how best to use that bet, and by putting the wager into practice in a race.

All the best December horse racing awaits at tracks like Santa Anita, Gulfstream Park, Aqueduct, and 300+ tracks. With NYRA Bets, new users can enjoy a $200 Sign-Up Deposit Match Bonus anytime. Just use promo code ABR200 and get in the action today! And be sure to tune into “America’s Day at the Races” running on FS2 every afternoon this weekend.

This week, we’ll discuss the most straightforward bet of all: the win bet. The basics of the bet are in the name: if the horse you bet on comes in first, you win. At NYRA tracks, the minimum wager on a win bet is $1.

The win bet is one of the few wagers where you can get a good idea of how much you’ll win before the race goes off. The big board in the infield, often known as the “tote board,” gives the current win odds of each horse, as do various TV monitors all over the track. The odds are updated based on how much money is wagered on each horse. If a horse has a lot of money wagered on them, their odds will go down. If they’re not taking that much play, their odds go up.

If a horse is on the board at 4-1, that means that you’ll receive $4 for every $1 you bet should they win. A horse at 5-2 will pay off roughly $2.50 to win for every $1 invested, while a 9-5 shot will get you back $1.80 for every $1 wagered.

A simple formula to determine how much money you would get back for a win bet it to multiply the amount wagered x your horses odds and then and back the initial amount wagered, which is returned to you. For example, if you bet $2 to win on a horse at 4-1 odds, you would win $10 ($2x4+$2=$10). If you bet $5 on a runner at 10-1 odds, you would get back $55 (5x10+5).

The win bet is best used when you find a horse you really like who will go off at a good price. Betting to win is all about finding value. If you find a horse who you think will go off at a higher price than they should, that’s a prime opportunity to place a win bet. Everyone has their own definition of value, but generally horses who go off at 1-1 or less, or “odds-on,” are not great win bets. There’s not much value to be found in getting back less than you wagered on your original proposition, and in the long run, you’d have to be correct at an exceptional rate to make money betting those kinds of horses.

Saturday’s Aqueduct Win Bet

The sixth race on Saturday at Aqueduct is the New York Stallion Series for New York-sired 2-year-old colts and geldings at seven furlongs.

My top pick in this race is #2 Bustin Pietre for trainer Bruce Levine and jockey Kendrick Carmouche. He broke his maiden in impressive style in his career debut, leading from start to finish and drawing off to win by 5 ½ lengths. In the Notebook Stakes against New York-breds next out, he was well-beaten by Senbei, who was very impressive and may be a contender on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. Bustin Pietre still ran on well in the stretch and finished second, three-quarters of a length clear of third place. There doesn’t appear to be anyone here as good as Senbei, which will make Bustin Pietre’s job a bit easier. With a good post position and tactical speed, Bustin Pietre has a great chance to pick up his first stakes win.

Aqueduct Horses in Focus for Saturday, December 18
Posted on December 17, 2021 by David Aragona

RACE 1: EARLY VOTING (#7)

Among those with experience, Matt Doyle and Iconic Adventure are arguably the two with the best credentials. The former has yet to put forth a bad effort through 3 starts. The big question mark with Matt Doyle is the stretch-out to a mile, since progeny of Violence can be more proficient sprinters. He’s obviously a contender, but could be vulnerable to a lightly-raced rival with upside. I’m more intrigued by Iconic Adventure, who comes off a poor effort finishing behind Matt Doyle in that Nov. 20 maiden affair. However, he was riding the rail eating dirt much of the way, and briefly got caught in behind a tiring runner approaching the quarter pole. He’s bred to stretch out and probably deserves one more chance. Though, the quality of that Oct. 29 race won by Hagler is in serious doubt based on the disappointing performances of multiple runbacks. Some may make the case for My Brother Cam switching surfaces, though Michael Dickinson isn’t really known for targeting dirt races, winning just 2 on this surface over the past 5 years. I’m instead going with first time starter Early Voting. This $200k yearling purchase is by leading freshman sire Gun Runner, who wins with 22% of his debut runners. The dam was unraced and she has produced two minor winners, both of whom won on the dirt. And there’s real quality in the second generation, as the dam is a half-sister to Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner and top sire Speightstown. The dam is also a full-sister to Grade 1 Los Alamitos Futurity winner Irap (13-3-4-2, $1.6 million). Chad Brown is 4 for 15 (27%, $2.21 ROI) with first time starters in Aqueduct dirt routes over the past 5 years. There are some quick-looking workouts on the tab, the most recent of which matches Sound Money, a 3-year-old in the next race.

RACE 6: STIRDATPOT (#8)

The Great White Way Division is definitely the more wide open of the two New York Stallion Series Stakes on this card. There are a couple of turf horses in the mix who could attract support. Maseta might be the most naturally talented runner in this field based on his solid third-place finish in the Central Park last time. He does have some dirt pedigree on his dam’s side, but he’s only raced on turf and will be bet for the wrong reasons. The same goes for Geno, who had a tougher trip than Maseta last time, but has all turf pedigree from his dam. I want to go for horses who have raced primarily on dirt. Unique Unions is the one to beat in my view. He was prematurely pulled up in his debut after taking some awkward strides, but he rebounded with a dominant maiden win last time at Aqueduct. He has plenty of speed and should be contesting the pace from the rail. Though there are plenty of others who could try to attain forward position. My top pick is Stirdatpot, who ships in from Kentucky. This Florida-bred colt by Trinniberg debuted against open company at Churchill Downs facing a pretty strong field. The impressive winner returned to just miss in a stakes at Oaklawn in his next start, and the seventh and eighth place runners both returned to win with significantly improved speed figures. He has the tactical speed to be prominent throughout and is drawn well towards the outside. Trainer Genevieve Londono has been enjoying a strong year and I think she’s shipping in a horse with a real chance to make an impact. And he figures to be a square price due to the unfamiliar connections. I’d also want to use some other maidens at prices underneath. Safalow’s Mission can improve off the trainer change to Linda Rice after selling for $130k at Fasig-Tipton this month. I would even give a look to massive longshot Hot Stepper, who ran better than it appears last time when conservatively ridden early. This half-brother to Broadway Bay has more ability than his running lines indicate.

RACE 9: TAPIZEARANCE (#12)

Uncle George could vie for favoritism in this NY-bred finale, which drew a full field of runners. He’s never raced on dirt but he’d be tough for this group to handle if he were able to transfer his turf form to the main track. It’s probably not a good sign that he hasn’t tried dirt before now, since he’s probably been scratched out of a few off-the-turf affairs during that time. However, he does have some pedigree to handle this surface. His dam has produced some turf runners, but she’s also thrown multiple dirt winners Sioux and Storm Prophet. He’s trained well on dirt throughout his career, so he probably deserves a chance over it. I just can’t pick him on top at what may be a relatively short price. Raven Rocks may also take some money as he makes his first start off the claim for George Weaver. He’s returning just 9 days after beating a weaker field here when making his second start off a layoff. He needs some pace to close into, and should get it with plenty of speed signed on. However, I do think he needs to improve on his recent form to make it two in a row. I’m going in a different direction with Tapizearance. This gelding ran quite well two back, as he was contesting an honest pace and held well for second. He tried tougher foes at this level last time, facing talented New York-breds Big Bobby and Seven Lilies, and understandably wasn’t as competitive. Yet he also ran better than it seems that day, as he was wide the entire way against a rail bias. Now he’s encountering a much softer field at this level, and is getting a rider upgrade to Jose Lezcano. I also find it promising that Linda Rice isn’t dropping him back in for a tag, instead electing to protect him at this allowance condition. This horse has routinely run his best races over this Aqueduct course, and I’m hopeful he can wake up with the return to this surface.

2021 Harlan’s Holiday Stakes Cheatsheet
By TwinSpires Editorial Team, Sponsored Content
December 17, 2021

By Vance Hanson (TwinSpires)

1. MIGHTY HEART (9-5) – Dual Canadian classic winner in 2020 has proven more than just a hero north of the border this season with several strong efforts at or around this level. The issue he faces here is early company from the less-classy Blue Steel, who could potentially make him expend energy he’ll need for later. Alternatively, Velazquez could choose instead to sit right behind and take first crack, which this colt has been able to do effectively in the past. Logical threat.

2. BLUE STEEL (10-1) – Victory in the Claiming Crown Iron Horse would have capped a fine season, but connections willing to take a shot at this much tougher level. In essence, though, this nickel starter type appears in over his head. However, it appears he’ll play some role as one of the more obvious pace players, either by setting it up for others and/or softening up Mighty Heart.

3. TWENTY TWICE (10-1) – His quest to get past his second allowance condition this fall gained little traction, and thus the class hike to a G3 seems ambitious. However, keep in mind he started this form cycle coming back from a very long layoff. Effort two back wasn’t bad behind a next-out winner in a fast race for the level, and probably undone last time by the slow pace. Should get stronger fractions here, though class concerns remain.

4. EYE OF A JEDI (8-1) – Enjoyed a fine Gulfstream meet last winter, finishing second in this race and the Fred W. Hooper (G3) before capping it off with an emphatic victory in the Ghostzapper (G3) around two turns. However, after a get-fit run in the slop on Sept. 17, his last two runs have been well below par. Time perhaps catching up to him as he’ll be seven soon, and so far has been no match for Fearless. Peak runs last winter were Lasix-free, so we’ll see if that has any effect here, but in general enters with form that doesn’t inspire confidence.

5. SOUTH BEND (4-1) – It’s been feast or famine for the colt this year. Stakes tries on the dirt weren’t bad, though, the grass attempts can be forgiven, and he did score a win over Mighty Heart in their mutual season debut at Keeneland. However, worth noting his two wins this year have come when he’s been allowed to run with Lasix, which isn’t allowed for this race. Inconsistency the obvious drawback.

6. FEARLESS (8-5) –Perhaps in need of that tightener last month in the one-mile overnight handicap, which he lost by a length to a rival he was conceding five pounds to. However, worth noting a prep wasn’t necessary at all when taking the Gulfstream Park Mile (G2) in February after a much longer break. Half-length loss to eventual Met Mile (G1) winner Silver State in the Oaklawn H. (G2) easily the best performance turned in by any of these this season, and anything approximating that form will make him difficult to beat here.

Handicapper's Corner: 2021 Ft. Lauderdale Stakes (G2)
12 on the turf in Ft. Lauderdale Stakes
By: John Caro, S. FL ThoroFan

Looks like it will be a lovely day for racing in South Florida with a 24% chance of rain later in the day.

Should they take it off the turf it will be run on the new Tapeta course.

There are 12 entries and an also eligible for this race. I will only write about the top 6 contenders as I see them in the field.

#2 L'Imperator - Brown/Velasquez- won last out going longer against #1 Doswell and he's 5 for 9 all on turf. He get 99 speed at this distance and is a closing type runner. The connections and the record make him my number one pick.

#8 Analyze It - Brown/Hernandez - he appears to be the speed of the speed in this test and I expect Brown will send him if for no other reason than to set up L'Imperator for a kill. He has been going 100 miles a mile at a time but in the past he can get 100 when he goes longer. ITM play.

#12 Space Traveller - Walsh/Gaffalione - Stalwart animal but gets an outside post at at Gulfstream that is not kind to most runners. He looks best going longer and can get 100 on a good day. Another ITM play.

#1 Doswell - Tagg/Alvarado - Hard not to see this one being in play as he has competed with some tough characters in the past.

From here it's kinda what you like to see in a horse's performance lines and the expectation of the jockey making the right move to get ITM.

#11 Atone - Maker/Jaramillo - Maker brings two horses to the race and for me this is the better choice. He can front run or be tactical and might pick up some pieces judging by the pace.Another thing to note is if the race goes to the Tapeta he is the one of two in the race who has decent speed on the All Weather.

#6 Renaissance Frolic - Joseph/Gonzalez - Scratch though his last performance at Kentucky Downs. This a horse that likes to be ITM a lot and he likes Gulfstream. Along with the fact that his jockey is very keen in these situations I think he has a chance to make an impact at 30 to 1.

Handigambling

Here's how I see it for Handigambling I'll play a $2.50 trifecta

2 with 1, 6, 8, 11, 12 = $ 50

From a practical standpoint that's enough spent on this race. You could make it a $0.50 wager and it will be $10

Good luck to everyone.

Al Cimaglia: Meadowlands Early Pick 4 Analysis

December 18, 2021 | By Al Cimaglia

The feature at the Meadowlands goes in Race 9, the Twas The Week Before Christmas Final with a $66,000 purse. The 0.50 Early Pick 4 starts in Race 6. The sequence has a $50,000 guaranteed pool with a 15% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 6

1-Western Fame (5-1)-This fine 8-year-old has banked >$1.9 million but has only 1 win on an off-track. Drops and went in 150.3 last week in the slop and now Tetrick will be steering. Looks like a major player and should race close to the lead from the start.
4-DA Delightful (8-1)-Came out of the same race as the one above and fits better at this level. Had an impressive finish last week and that was also the case in the previous 2 starts. Dunn will be in the bike and could be bet down off the morning line but should be a fair price.

Race 7

4-Double Account (9/2)-Made a rare break last week and was in very tough anyway. Willing to overlook with this drop to the level of a recent win and Bartlett can be aggressive here. This post draw won't hurt and might be overlooked at the windows with Gingras off to steer #9 for Burke.
6-Mystical Wynn (5-1)-Hasn't won in 9 tries at the Big M but comes off a big effort and the trip was rough. Brennan could have the pedal down and land in an up-close seat.

Race 8

4-Tellitsabb (3-1)-Yonkers shippers is having a nice year and Dunn lands the assignment. Fits well with this group in a contentious race. A picture is a possibility in M1 debut.
5-Leon David (4-1)-Got on the engine last week and those were tough conditions to wire a field. Tetrick takes a seat and will look for a better result. Might get the top and not look back.
7-Forever Fav (7/2)-This is another Yonkers shipper, and the Travis Alexander trainee is looking to add to a $182k bankroll. Gingras should be blasting out and may need to outmuscle the one above for the point. Dangerous with the lead and has the pilot who can steal a quarter.

Race 9

2-Palomar (10-1)-Has been trying hard and finishing well. This post draw should help, and this race could set-up for a closer. Looks like a major threat if near the top turning for the wire.
4-Caviart Luca (10-1)-Gingras is between the pipes, and he will be in go-mode from the start. Comes off a big try last week and almost wired the field on a very windy night.
6-Bet Nineteen (9/2)-Landed here from Hoosier on a 2-race win streak and didn't miss a beat winning his M1 debut last week. Hasn't lost since going on Lasix and best to not overlook.
7-Save Me A Dance (7/2)-Was claimed for $100k on 12-4, then put in for a $150k tag and cashed the top check. Versatile 4-year-old can win racing near the top of the stack or coming off cover.

What You Need to Know - Saturday, December 18, 2021

December 18, 2021

Jeff Siegel’s “What Your Need to Know”
December 18, 2021

AQUEDUCT - EIGHTH RACE (Post time: 3:37 ET)

The New York Stallion Series Stakes (filly division) attracted a field of 11, with recent big figure earner Morning Matcha (8/5) and the all-weather stakes winning Howdyoumakeourmoney (3-1) expected to get much of the play. A victory by either one would not be surprising. However, we are going to look elsewhere because we are inclined to distrust the form at Parx and have no idea whether ‘Money needs synthetic to show her best.

Let’s instead take a close look at the second-time starting maiden Yo Cuz. Flat out given a race in her debut, the Bill Mott-trained filly broke slowly to fall far back and trail early, remained under a stout hold to the head of the lane, and then was asked to finish up a bit and responded quite well, closing a gap on her own courage before galloping out past the entire field by the time they reached the clubhouse turn. J. L. Ortiz rides her back, and with $500,000 on the line and with the educational run out of the way this daughter of Laoban will be allowed to show what she can do. With an extra furlong to work with combined with a significant forward move that we’re expecting her to produce, she’s worth a play in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics at or near her morning line of 9/2.

*

GULFSTREAM PARK - ELEVENTH RACE (Post time: 5:05 ET)

The morning line favorite at 2-1 in this middle distance turf event for juveniles is Misbehaved, most likely because he’s trained by Todd Pletcher, who has been on fire during the first two weeks of the Gulfstream Park championship season. And, in a race in which the other contenders doesn’t look particularly formidable, punters might be included to look past the colt’s three-race resume that includes as failure as the favorite in all three starts, most recently when ninth of 11 in a similar grass affair at Belmont Park last month. Perhaps the addition of blinkers will help, and on numbers he’s still better than the others in the field with prior experience, but if he wins at a short price, so be it.

Instead, let’s take a close look at the newcomer from Kelsey Danner’s barn, Scarab, listed at an enticing 8-1 on the morning line. The son of Cairo Prince sports a steady, healthy series of workouts that should have him plenty fit for a top performance first crack out of the box. His most recent work at Palm Meadows six days ago was clocked in :47.15 seconds around dogs on turf, the same final time assigned to his older stable mate Smokin’ Jay, winner of the Allied Forces Stakes at Belmont Park in September (we’re assuming they worked together). From a solid barn with good stats across the board, this homebred 2-year-old offers plenty to like and in a race that is begging to be won by a fresh face, he fits the bill.

Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Fair Grounds - Race #6
Picks Notes
#1 Achilles He was no match for a runaway winner in the debut over the Arlington Polytrack, but he might be able to step forward off that effort and does not appear to be meeting a really deep cast in this auction price restricted maiden.
#3 Belgrade He has a big claim on this at first asking for a capable team, and as mentioned above, there isn't a whole lot to worry about on paper in this group, so he probably doesn't need to be a star to land this.
#2 Tricolour He stepped forward a bit in that second start when trying maiden claiming company in the local debut, and the blinkers give him a little bit of upside here that might be enough to be competitive with these.
Race Summary Achilles debuted in a decent spot in Chicago, and he's meeting a very modest bunch in this conditioned maiden claimer. He likely has some upside here in this second start, and he won't need much of it to score here.

Fair Grounds - Race #7
Picks Notes
#9 Warrior in Chief He'll only go if this comes over to the main track, but there is some rain in the forecast that might give him that chance. He has some pace to get in the mix early on, and he brings some pretty decent running lines with him.
#6 Midnight Tea Time He's probably a short kind of price if this is on the lawn, but his baseline form right now seems a slight cut above these, and a couple of potential pace players might set things up nicely for him.
#7 Entertainment He has turned in a few pretty nice races while showing solid route pace, but he can be a bit all or nothing in the lane, and I worry the stretchout pace of #2 Mr. Hustle might be too much of a thorn in his side.
Race Summary Warrior in Chief has a handful of recent running lines that could make him very tough from right up on the splits if this one comes over to the main track, but I'll single the likely chalk #6 Midnight Tea Time if this stays on.

Fair Grounds - Race #9
Picks Notes
#7 Beachcombing Like him on either surface today after he showed some pace and faded late off the layoff last out. He can be tighter with that race under his belt, and he may have been up on an opening quarter that was just a touch too quick last out.
#4 Attorney Tim He's 1-for-8 here, but he has shown a pretty sharp turn of foot in some of his local tries. His last was really solid, but I'm not sure he has much upside off that kind of effort, and it seems just as likely that he'd take at least a small step back off a pretty big effort by his standards.
#5 Fortuity He comes right back at the same level off the claim after scoring while in for the tag last time out, and he's protected while in for the allowance condition today. He might be a decent enough price on the move to this barn.
Race Summary Beachcombing has had an interesting career so far and has turned in all of his best career efforts over the grass here. He's a threat on the main track if this gets rained over, as his last off turf try produced an easy score on the Louisiana Downs dirt.

Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

Meadowlands - Race #5
Picks Notes
#4 CHICKEN NUGGET Never in it as the fave, wake-up candidate on another barn change.
#9 MIND TRIP Won 4 of last 5 starts at this level, draws post 9.
#2 IMMA BE Led by city block, finished last at odds-on.
Race Summary Chicken Nugget changes connections for the fourth consecuitve start and steps up in class off a well-beaten try as the favorite. He trailed most of the way from post 8, raced extremely wide on the turn and in the stretch and finished on his own courage. He seeks a re-run of a winning second-over rally two back. Bet on him to win and place.

Woodbine-Mohawk Park - Race #6
Picks Notes
#3 LONG WEEKEND A Has speed, rounding to good race, lures Filion.
#4 MAPPOS LION Won 12 of 16 and $50k as heavy favorite most starts.
#6 LANCASTER BOMBER Can be excused for comeback from post 8, seeks return to consistent form.
Race Summary Long Weekend chased the favorite through a :55.4 middle half at Flamboro before the deep-closing winner passed by. He can carry his speed farther at a good price off that much improved effort. Play 3-4 and 3-6 exactas.

Woodbine-Mohawk Park - Race #12
Picks Notes
#4 ROCKME ROLLME Lacked running room against better, goes well in here.
#2 JM JACK OF HEARTS Chased even-money winner around the track in same spot.
#9 RESPECT OUR FLAG Looks to build on $74k season, will be running late.
Race Summary Rockme Rollme saved ground in fourth, stayed in while the outer flow developed and was blocked through the stretch. He exited several fast heats prior and figures tough with class relief. Play 4-2 and 4-9 exactas.

Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

Gulfstream Park - Race #8
Picks Notes
#7 Bronx Beauty Was up in time at Monmouth last out and was runner-up in this race last year; has tuned up for a big effort here.
#3 Frank's Rockette Has lost three straight, which is unusual for this talented filly; can be a factor from the beginning.
#5 Center Aisle Won allowance races in her last two and was graded stakes placed last year; quick, but can come off the pace as well.
Race Summary Bronx Beauty is 11 of 31, and while winless at GP, still has run some good races over this strip.

Gulfstream Park - Race #9
Picks Notes
#5 South Bend Was up in time going a mile at Churchill last out and is capable of making a strong move here.
#4 Eye of a Jedi Doesn't run many bad ones over this strip and is capable of being a force on the front end.
#6 Fearless Was second in a handicap here last time and has won three of four over this track; won the G2 Gulfstream Mile on February.
Race Summary South Bend has a good closing move and will get a sharp pace in front of him.

Gulfstream Park - Race #10
Picks Notes
#12 Space Traveller His last four races were in Grade or Group 1 races and he has a eye-catching late move on occasion; well spotted here.
#8 Analyze It Comes off a win at Belmont and has been troublesome with the early lead.
#2 L'Imperator Closed well for an allowance win at Aqueduct and can be tough if he runs back to that one.
Race Summary Space Traveller has a big class edge and has defeated better company; well spotted and the one to hold off.

ANALYSIS

RACE 1: MAIDEN CLAIMING $25,000, 2-YEAR-OLDS, FILLIES, 1 MILE

7-3-4-8
9 races on today’s card, including two stakes races. #7 Middle Island (9/5) drops for a tag for the first time for the dangerous duo of Brittany Russell and Jevian Toledo. She’s closed well in both her starts after falling well off the pace. Stretches out to a mile for the first time. #3 Cuenca (7/2) stretched out to 1 1/16 miles last out, and improved 22 points from her debut. She showed a lot more early speed in that race, and will try to keep it going here. #4 Party Monster (12/1) ran a 60 in her first start while making mild ground, and can build on that race at a price.

RACE 2: ALLOWANCE (N/W1X), 3-YEAR-OLDS AND UP, FILLIES AND MARES, MD-BRED, 1 MILE

1-4-5-3

Russell and Toledo are back for more here, as #1 Miss Chesapeake (5/2) makes her third career start in this spot. She broke her maiden going away on debut on October 22, then stepped in a bit over her head in the Politely Stakes and was well-beaten. Should find these a bit easier to deal with, although it will be her first start beyond six furlongs. #4 Congress Hall (10/1) has run consistently solid figures in the 70s, and steps up from conditioned claimers. She’s been knocking on the door at this level, although she hasn’t quite been able to break through. She has no early speed, but should rally for an exotics spot. #5 Misty’s Banshee (7/2) drew off to break her maiden impressively in her last start at a mile, but struggled when stretching out around two turns last out. She should appreciate the cutback in distance.

RACE 3: MAIDEN CLAIMING $40,000, 2-YEAR-OLDS, 6 FURLONGS

2-8-6-9

#2 Scintillio (7/2) closed well in the last eighth to just miss third on debut. He has a recent bullet workout under the belt. #8 Lantau (6/1) drops back in for a tag and has the most early speed of anyone in the race. His stamina is still in question, but he should be able to hold on for an underneath spot, at least. #6 Addy’s Laddy TNT (5/2) chased the speed in both of his starts, including a third-place performance in the Timonium Juvenile last out. He’s had a consistent worktab since then, but might need a race first off the bench.

ANALYSIS

RACE 4: STARTER ALLOWANCE $5,000, 3-YEAR-OLDS AND UP, 1 1/16 MILES

2-6-7-1

#2 Iywaan (6/5) has won six times this year from twelve starts, thanks to some good tactical speed. He fell too far behind a slow pace last out, and wasn’t able to get the job done. Should race better with a more honest pace. #6 Hashtag Winning (2/1) won at this level last out, running an 88 after pressing the pace and drawing off. He was much more forwardly placed in that race than he was in his previous races. #7 Crush It (8/1) chased a loose leader and last out and closed for third, behind the solid allowance-quality runner My Friends Beer and next-out winner Goodluckchuck. He made a move for the front and drew in close before flattening out, as My Friends Beer rolled by him and he was unable to get past Goodluckchuck.

RACE 5 – MAIDEN CLAIMING $40,000, 2-YEAR-OLDS, 6 FURLONGS

4-2-3-5
#4 Blo My Budget (5/1) was well-backed on debut, and made decent ground late despite falling well behind at the start. He went off at 9/2 despite being one of only two first-time starters in the race. #2 Senator Kelly (6/1) races first out for Lacey Gaudet and has some sharp four-furlong workouts in his recent lines. If he shows any ability first time out, he can finish underneath. #3 Trash Talkin Larry (7/2) has improved in each of his four starts, peaking at a 67 last out with a solid fourth-place rally at 1 1/16 miles. Cutting back in distance should help.

RACE 6: ALLOWANCE (N/W1X), 3-YEAR-OLDS AND UP, FILLIES AND MARES, 6 FURLONGS

9-2-10-5

#9 Fraudulent Charge (7/5) made a big move to the lead in the Safely Kept Stakes only to get caught in the last few strides. She was second behind Princess Kokachin, a budding sprinting star, two races back. Shouldn’t have much trouble with these, although you won’t get rich betting her. #2 American Bastet (6/1) dueled all the way around with Pretty Lori last out, and that rival ultimately drew away by four lengths. Still, it was a big effort from American Bastet, who was making her first appearance against winners. Here, she looms as one of the main speed threats. She may get some pressure on the outside from #10 Hope Has a Name (7/2), who set the pace and drew off last out, with a career-best mark of 90. She narrowly missed her previous top two races back, with a figure of 85 earned in a game front-running victory.

ANALYSIS

RACE 7: MARYLAND JUVENILE FILLIES CHAMPIONSHIP, 2-YEAR-OLDS, FILLIES, MD-BRED/SIRED, 7 FURLONGS

7-3-4-2

The bettors will flock towards #3 Jester Calls Nojoy (4/5), shipping in for Todd Pletcher. She broke her maiden impressively at Saratoga, but has struggled against open stakes company in her last two starts. While she’s a major contender, she’ll probably be overbet because of her gaudy class lines. As such, I’ll lean towards #7 Dazzy (7/2). She ran off the screen in her debut at Belmont Park, crushing the field by twelve lengths with an impressive mark of 87. That’s not far off from Jester Calls Nojoy’s peak of 90. If she runs back to that race, she could surprise the big favorite. #4 Luna Belle (7/2) got caught in traffic in the Maryland Million Lassie, then was a fast-closing second in the Smart Halo Stakes last out. Will try to put it all together here.

RACE 8: MARYLAND JUVENILE CHAMPIONSHIP, 2-YEAR-OLDS, MD-BRED/SIRED, 7 FURLONGS
10-1-12-4
A field of thirteen has entered this race. Unlike the Juvenile Fillies Championship, where the wagering figures to be dominated by one or two horses, this a wide-open affair that could be won by many different runners. #10 Coastal Mission (6/1) made good ground while wide in the Maryland Million Nursery, despite racing on a track that was not kind to horses racing on the outside. He closed for second, following an impressive maiden win at Charles Town where he ran off the screen. His recent workouts there have been strong. I’m hoping he slides through the cracks in the betting. Street Lute’s younger half-brother, #1 Alottahope (8/1) broke his maiden in very professional style on debut, drawing off to a 2 1/4-length win with a strong figure of 84. Considering his pedigree and the Robb/Perez connections, I’d be surprised if he went off higher than his morning line. #12 Joe (5/1) also raced professionally in his dirt debut, winning by 3 1/2 lengths going a mile last out for Mike Trombetta. He’ll be forwardly placed again but runs the risk of a wide trip.

RACE 9: MAIDEN CLAIMING $10,000, 3, 4, AND 5-YEAR-OLDS, 6 FURLONGS

3-2-7-6
#3 Albertano (5/1) ran a career-best mark of 65 when he was a strong-closing second last out. Has some of the best late pace figures in a race where most of them flatten out late. #2 Hands Down (9/2) drops from the $40,000 level and checked out of traffic last out after showing speed. Might have to improve a few points to win this one but can certainly do so third time out. #7 Chauffeur (3/1) has an 0-for-16 lifetime mark, but most of those races came against better horses than he’ll see here.

FREE PICK: Kentucky Wildcats -2.5
RATING: 30*
ROT#: 716
I'm going to lay the 2.5-points with Kentucky, as they take on North Carolina in Las Vegas tonight. I think we are getting value with the Wildcats because of the fact that they come in off that ugly 62-66 loss at Notre Dame.
It was just a bad spot. Kentucky had played 7 straight cupcakes leading up to that game, it was their first true road game and they had probably the worst 3-point shooting night they will have this season going 2 of 19 from deep.
The focus will be back for this one and I'm just not so sure this North Carolina team is as good as what people think. The Tar Heels are 8-2 with their only two losses being to Purdue and Tennessee. Their big win is a 72-51 blowout of Michigan at home. A win that looks less impressive to me when I watch the Wolverines lose at home to the likes of Minnesota.
UNC had a tough time dealing with the interior defense of the Vols and that's something Calipari's team are always good at. Protecting the paint with all that size and athleticism. Tar Heels might keep it close for a while, but I expect Kentucky to pull away in this one. GIve me the Wildcats -2.5!

FRANK’S CUTTING ROOM FLOOR FOR SATURDAY, 12/18:

My “Cutting Room Floor” plays are the situations I considered the closest to being worthy of investment but did not make the “final cut” for my official plays today for subscribers. The last play I cut for Saturday afternoon was with the Eastern Michigan Eagles plus the points versus the Liberty Flames. Eastern Michigan (7-5) looks to rebound from a 31-10 upset loss at Central Michigan as a 7.5-point underdog won November 26th. The Eagles have covered the point spread in 20 of their last 27 road games after a loss on the road by at least three touchdowns. Eastern Michigan has also covered the point spread as an underdog getting 3.5 to 10 points. Liberty (7-5) has lost three in a row after a 31-16 upset loss against Army as a 3-point favorite. The Flames have failed to cover the point spread in 4 of their previous 4 losses this season. Liberty has also failed to cover the point spread in 5 of their last 6 games when laying 3.5 to 10 points. Take Eastern Michigan plus the points. Best of luck — Frank.

NHL | Senators vs Flyers
Play on: Senators +110 at linepros

The Senators have knocked off some unlikely teams lately, while the the Flyers have been picking on the small fry. Off a close loss to the Hurricanes, this will be a test to see if the Sens' new found prowess is for real. The home advantage doesn't seem to apply here. Neither team has been more successful one way or the other. Both goaltenders have impressed of late. Could be close, but I like Ottawa's chances here. Take the underdog Senators to win.

NBA | Knicks vs Celtics
Play on: UNDER 210½ -110

This is a free play on Under.

The Celtics host the Knicks in the second game of a back to back at home. The Knicks are coming off a win on the road at Houston, but they had lost four straight previously. New York ranks 23rd in the league averaging just over 105 points per game. The under is 11-5 in the Knicks last 16 games as an underdog, and the under is 8-3 in their last 11 at Boston. The Celtics have failed to reach the total in seven of their last 10 when coming off a loss.

Play on: Raphael Assuncao +240 at William Hill

DMack's Free Play for Saturday, December 18, 2021 winner is Raphael Assuncao at UFC Vegas 45
Ricky Simon is an overwhelming favorite here and not exactly sure why. He's fought three times (all spent shells) in two years, once in a year and was beaten back-to-back by Faber and Font in the two prior. Assuncao is 39, a UFC original OG, and on a three-fight losing streak and basically fighting for his UFC light. His three losses were to Garbrandt, Sandhagen, and Marlon Moraes ..... all three fighters ranked TOP 6 at bantamweight when the fights took place. Assuncao has been fighting in the organization since 2011, fought EVERYONE over that time and has wins over the likes of Dillashaw, Munhoz, Moreas and even beat Jorge Masvidal back in 2005. This guy is BIG quality and +250. Take it.
