Frank Carulli: Stronach 5 Analysis: Friday, Jan. 7, 2021
January 6, 2022 | By Frank Carulli
STRONACH 5 ANALYSIS
January 7, 2022
A 29-1 winner in the first leg of last week's Stronach 5 triggered a $43,647 payout for a winning $1 ticket. The first 2022 installment of the popular cross-country wager is set for Friday, Jan 7, covering five races from four tracks, all in a one-hour window. Here's an early look at the action, with an update to follow after scraches Friday morning:
LEG A: (Laurel Park, race 9, 4:28 EST) -- Going six-deep in a wide open maiden claimer. Longshot TIPSY TOURIST is worth using after she made a middle move to lead at the stretch call before finishing third at 6F two back. ICY HARBOR, part of a formidable entry if runningmate CANDY CORNER draws into the race, disappeared on a muddy track in her last start after a solid route try in the race prior. BELLSWILLBERINGING raced evenly in the 2-path after a slightly troubled start against better, but she's no bargain from post 13. PEARLYVILLE sheds weight after three in-the-money finishes in a row. EL BOCHINCHE controlled a soft pace and held second in a shorter sprint.
LEG B: (Santa Anita, race 3, 4:35 EST) -- KEYSTONE FIELD, today's solo play in the Stronach 5, took command with a 3-wide bid on the final turn but tired in the final sixteenth to finish out of the money in a longer turf marathon. What's more, he was caught by multiple graded stakes-winning turfer Red King and by Midnight Tea Time (39/5-9-11 $612k), who overcame trouble to win an allowance next out.
LEG C: (Gulfstream Park, race 9, 4:42 EST) -- Hoping a pair of promising 4-year-olds are ready to go off long layoffs. MUTASAABEQ, last seen winning a one-mile stakes race at Gulfstream a year ago, is working forwardly for his 4yo debut and gets Lasix for the first time. COLLABORATE shows a series of bullet workouts for his first start in five months. He romped twice at one-mile and was stakes-placed at today's distance at Gulfstream.
LEG D: (Golden Gate, race 3, 4:50 EST) -- FOSTER BOI won his last three starts at Golden Gate by a combined 7-1/4 lengths, now goes an extra half-furlong. KNOCKOUT BERT is another horse for the course, with two wins and a near miss in his last three 6F tries. HANDSOME GARY is 0-11 on the synthetic track but warrants a second look with three seconds in his last four sprints. MOHAWK KING raced close-up a long way before the deep closers arrived in a turf allowance. He adds blinkers but will be an underlay after the race winner, Freeport Joe, came back to win a Grade III grass route.
LEG E: (Gulfstream Park, race 10, 5:14 EST) -- Going to try to beat morning-line favorite Eagle Chief, who bid 4-wide into a contested duel and was out-kicked in the stretch to fall to 0-10 on the turf. GOLDEN INDY was pressured from the outset and battled bravely until the deep closers passed by in deep stretch in a heavily-bet debut. TRUPIA raced wide as the beaten favorite in a MSW route on the Parx main track that produced a winner. He should like the change of surface because his dam, Social Queen, was a multiple Grade III winner on the grass.

Leg A: 1, 2, 5, 6, 13
Leg B: 9
Leg C: 5, 6
Leg D: 3, 5, 6, 7

Best Horse Racing Bets for Friday, January 7, 2022
By J.W. Paine in Horse Racing
Golden Gate Fields, Gulfstream Park, and Laurel Park gave me a mix of undeniable morning-line favorites along with a surprising number of underdog moneymakers (including a few sleepers) for my Friday horseracing tout-o-rama.
Go ahead and check my math with a quick visit to one of our best horseracing wagering sites.
Good luck!
My Friday Picks for Golden Gate Fields
We’ll begin with race three, a six-furlong claiming race on the all-weather track for four-year-old’s and upward that have never won two races (maiden, claiming and starter races for $16,000 or less not considered in eligibility).
I’m buying a win ticket on the second-favored (at 3/1) Foster Boi ridden by Ruben Fuentes.
This six-year-old gelding finished in the money six of his 19 career starts, winning five. Not great but looking at his record for the past twelve months puts the correctness of my pick in perspective: Three money finishes in six starts, all three wins—including his two most recent starts.
For just a bit more perspective, the morning-line favorite, Mohawk King, last won a race in September 2020.
Ranked among the top 100 trainers for wins in 2021, Reid France trains Foster Boi for Hat Trick Racing.
Race four is a one-mile claiming race for three-year-old fillies. I’m betting my two dollars on the 8/1 sleeper, Thisonesforbarry, with Santos Rivera in the irons.
This filly had a rather in auspicious start, breaking out of the maiden class only after four also-ran performances, but her graduation victory in November was followed with second-place finish in a claiming race in December. She’ll do.
Top-ranked for both wins and earnings, Steve M. Sherman trains Thisonesforbarry for owner-breeder Huston Racing Stables. Sherman has tapped Rivera to saddle Thisonesforbarry for her last three races.
Race eight is a 5-1/2 furlong claiming run on the all-weather track for fillies and mares four years old and upward. My money’s on the 5/2 morning-line favorite, Grinningeartoear, piloted by veteran jockey Pedro M. Terrero.
This six-year-old mare finished 11 of her 16 career starts in the money, winning seven—which gives her a significant statistical lead over the rest of this eight-horse field.
Twenty-five-year horseracing veteran Manuel Badilla trains Grinningeartoear for owner-breeder Martin W. Bach. Badilla has put Terrero in the irons for Grinningeartoear’s three most recent victories.
Friday’s Picks for Gulfstream Park
Let’s start on the all-weather track with race five, a one-mile and 70 yards allowance race for Florida-bred three-year-old’s. The morning-line’s odds say this may be one of the most tightly-contested races of the day, and I’m inclined to agree.
I’m still putting my two dollars on the 3/1 favorite, Birdman Richie, ridden by top jockey Irad Ortiz Jr.
This three-year-old gelding moneyed all five of his career starts, winning one, which gives him the edge in this seven-horse field.
Larry Rivelli trains Birdman Richie for owners Patricia’s Hope LLC and Richard Ravin.
Race eight is a one-mile allowance optional claiming race on the main track for fillies and mares four years old and upward. I like the 9/5 favorite, Join the Dots, piloted by Javier Castellano.
This four-year-old filly won her single career start, which gives her the slightest of edges over the second-favored Midnight Ballerina, who has a slightly better record but hasn’t won a race since breaking her maiden in September of 2020. In this nine-horse field, Join the Dots will do fine.
A Hall of Famer with Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes, and Breeders’ Cup wins on his scorecard, Claude R. McGaughey III trains Join the Dots for Courtlandt Farms (Donald and Donna Adam).
Race nine is a 6-1/2 furlong allowance optional claiming race for four-year-olds and upward. I’m betting on the second-favored (at 3/1) Bank On Shea, with top jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. aboard.
While the morning-line favorite—Mutasaabeq—has an impressive graded stakes win on his record, that was over two years ago, and the last twelve months say this race belongs to Bank On Shea. This five-year-old moneyed all six of his career starts, winning four, including the most recent—the Affirmed Success Stakes (Black Type) at Belmont Park last April.
It’ll be tight, but I see Bank on Shea in the winner’s circle.
Top 100-ranked for both wins and earnings the past two years, Carlos A. David trains Bank On Shea for Shea D Boy’s Stable.
Friday Picks for Laurel Park
We’re on the dirt track for race six, a one mile claiming race for fillies and mares four years old and upward that have never won two races. Sorry, but I’m not buying a morning-line favorite that took 17 tries to graduate the maiden class.
In fact, I had to dive down to the 8/1 sleeper to find a horse I could tout without crossing my fingers: Tuff But Fair, ridden by Johan Rosado.
This four-year-old filly moneyed four of her nine career starts, winning one—her initial maiden attempt. Versus the rest of this nine-horse field, she’s a star.
Forty-five-year horseracing veteran Charles L. Frock trains Tuff But Fair for owner Gerald L. Burns.
Race seven is a six-furlong starter allowance race for four-year-old’s and upward. This one is Friday’s no-brainer pick: 1/2 morning-line favorite Beverly Park, with veteran jockey Mychel J. Sanchez in the irons.
This five-year-old finished 12 of his 18 career starts in the money, winning ten. Of his ten starts in 2021, he won nine. Yeah. He’ll do.
Newcomer Norman L. Cash trains Beverly Park for Built Wright Stables, LLC.
For race eight—a 1-1/16 miles allowance run on the dirt track for fillies and mares four years old and upward—I’m betting on the fourth-favored (at 5/1) Award Wanted, piloted by Xavier Perez.
This five-year-old mare moneyed eleven of her 19 career starts, winning four. Notably, she finished third in the Maryland Million Turf Distaff Starter Handicap in October here at Laurel Park. Like the M/L favorite, Award Wanted won three races in 2021.
Longtime horseracing veteran John J. Robb trains Award Wanted for owners No Guts No Glory Farm and Erica Upton.

Horse Racing Picks
Tvg Sitetakeover 992x300
Most Likely Winner: (Race 6: Warrior’s Battle #8, 4/1):
Trainer Brad Cox is starting to get his stable moving in the new year at Oaklawn, and you know what that means … He has a filly by Khozan that is coming back to the track looking to make a leap up in class. Last out in an MC40k on 5 December, she was absolutely stellar, winning easily by 7+ lengths. Florent Geroux was on her that day, and will be again this time. With a speed fig like she posted last time, it is easy to see why she can win. This is Oaklawn … the cream rises to the top!
Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #8
Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 4: Freudian Fate #5, 5/1):
Owner Maggi Moss is a force in the business, and she invests in some quality runners. Trainer Jason Barkley took this 6-yr-old by Freud on after Chris Hartman had her for a minute. Sending her into ALLW Co. @OP on 19 December was not a positive move, if you look at how she finished. The race just gave her all kinds of problems, so it will be interesting to see how she reacts at this level. Taking a step forward is not going to be easy, but she has a shot with one of Hot Springs’ best … Francisco Arrieta. That … and her price of 5/1, or higher … could make her an overlay.
Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #5 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)
Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 8: Dirt, 1 Mile, AOC80k, 3F):
A 1 Mile affair that finishes in the short stretch at Oaklawn is going to ably serve as the “feature.” In this OC80k edition, it is the 3-yr-old fillies who take center stage. A focal point will be the match-up between trainers Steve Asmussen and Brad Cox. They continue to do battle in races like these, and you can bet that this is going to be a fun one. Others will try to take them on, and that only makes for a more interesting story that will unfold. Asmussen conditions Waterworks #7 for Clark Brewster, and she is a filly by Mosler that tried to make a move as a 2-yr-old from MSW Co. into a “Non-G” race at Laurel. She was bet by the public, but did not reward them, ending up 5th out of 8. A comeback race in early December followed at Aqueduct at the same level as this race. Again, she was off-the-board. You have to wonder about this filly, and if she is just trying to find her spot. Maybe coming to Oaklawn’s dirt will be the ticket. Jockey Ricardo Santana and his trainer reunite for this battle. As for Cox, he has a pair that are drawn in. It looks like Famed #6 will get quite a bit of play, after this well-bred filly by Uncle Mo is dropping out of the Golden Rod (G2). She was 4th in that contest, and looks classy enough to scoop this field, as Florent Geroux (the only one to ride her in 3 starts) is back aboard. I actually like her stablemate more. Ice Baby #2 was at the Fair Grounds back on 17 December, and she won convincingly in a MSW32k sprint going 6F. I am betting she can, and wants, to go longer. I do love those that are sired by Frosted, and this one is going to be an excellent price at 8/1. The addition of Francisco Arrieta is solid news too. His record speaks for itself, even if he rarely works with Cox. One other runner I want to use on this ticket is from the Lauer Barn. Torte #4 was excellent @OP back in mid-December, and she was 2nd in an OC80k sprint at crazy odds—55/1. Jon Court urged her on late in the game, and she clearly outran her price on the tote. If you look through her past form, she has some nice efforts, and maybe one of these days she is going to break through with a major win. Let’s use her in a Trifecta Wheel, and see if we can cash a ticket! Cox wins this one …
Wagering Recommendation: $2 Trifecta Wheel, 2 w 4/6/7 w 4/6/7

Horse Racing Picks
Tvg Sitetakeover 992x300
Most Likely Winner: (Race 7: My Golden Bling #6, 9/5):
Anyone who is into Texas breds knows the name My Golden Song. He has had a major impact on racing at Sam Houston. Here is yet another of his offspring that is continuing the tradition of winning in the Lone Star State. Trainer Austin Gustafson has brought this mare along, and tonight she is sure to score in this ALLW Co. race. Getting the solid riding skills of Ry Eikleberry is a plus, and even off of the break, she can bring the hammer. The way the track was setting up on Friday ... very slow ... that might play into her hands. 'Cappers are mighty high on Gustafson, and he can celebrate this one in the winner's circle at Sam.
Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #6
Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 8: Texas Whirlwind #1, 8/1):
Speaking of horses that are coming off-the-bench, here is one from J.R. Caldwell's outfit that looks viable as a long shot. Last year, this young filly was strong running in MSW Co. at Sam Houston, and then up at Lone Star. In early June she capped her season with a 2nd place result in ALLW Co. in Grand Prairie. Normally, young horses like these can mature quite rapidly, and I think she has a chance to move forward. Some might argue she "needs a race," but I am not buying it. Lane Luzzi gets the call, and we are going to see what kind of ability he has aboard this homebred. Hopefully the price hovers around 8/1 ...
Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #1 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)
Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 5: Turf, 1 Mile, AOC50k, 3F):
Early on in this Sam Houston Meet, the John B. Connally Turf Course will be used sparingly. On this Friday Night, I would consider this race, an AOC50k, to be a good one to wager on. Of course, Steve Asmussen has an entry that is going to get a ton of play. Carioquinoa #1 is 2/1 on the M/L, but I do not think this filly by Gun Runner has what it takes to get to the winner’s circle. Sure, running on debut at Kentucky Downs qualifies as grass experience, but she was on the dirt next out. I do not want to accept 2/1 on this Three Chimneys homebred.
Looking elsewhere is a good plan. I am pretty keen on Circle Back Girl #7. Her Remington form does not look too bad at all, and Danny Caldwell is an owner of some renown in OKC. He just won the “Owner Title” there, and Martin Villafranco might have a good one on his hands. He is a small-time conditioner, but that does not mean he does not have ability. Trying the grass for the 1st time is the plan, and the pedigree on either side looks full of promise. Ezequiel Lara gets the call, and his lawn jockey skills are more than adequate.
As for a couple of others to include in this wager, I fancy Tyler’s Dream #4 from Greg Green’s outfit. This is a classy young filly by Carpe Diem that last ran on the dirt out at Zia Park in a “Non-G.” The winner of that contest came back and won nicely. Putting her in, if she can deal with the blades, then she could be a player. One other one that looks smart is Rollin Chrome #3 … her connection to California Chrome is not the turf link; instead it is through the dam side—Yankee Gentleman. I am up for playing a Superfecta, which could be a tidy sum if we cash!
Wagering Recommendation: $2 Superfecta Wheel, 7 w 1/3/4 w 1/3/4 w 1/3/4

Today’s Horse Racing Tips – 7th January 2022
By: Racing and Sports
Racing and Sports highlight our standout plays at Australian TAB meetings for January 7.
Australian thoroughbred Tab meetings are today held at Canterbury, Port Macquarie, Orange, Cranbourne, Stawell, Sunshine Coast, Mackay, Narrogin and Hobart.
CANTERBURY: RACE 8 @ 9:30 PM
JUNGLE BOOK (8) looks the value runner in this. Will strip fitter third-up from the spell and has placed four from five around this tricky circuit. Has won up to 2000m and on all going and should be right there at the business end. KUTAYHA (3) is an exotics player's dream only missing the top four once in 17 outings and that was a fifth last time out. Strips fitter, gets Bowman and draws low. Plenty of ticks. ATLANTIC KING (4) has been building up towards another win and must be kept safe. MACCOMO (14) has placed four from four over this trip and gets in well at the weights with the claim. In the mix. CANYONERO (5) best of the rest from the low draw.
SELECTIONS: Jungle Book each-way.
As a FREE Racing and Sports offer, below is the Canterbury Computer Card.
Upload 1
PORT MACQUARIE: RACE 8 @ 5:25 PM
MILLENNIUM JEWEL (9) has been thereabouts in all four runs since joining the new stable and strikes a winnable affair here. Gets plenty of weight relief with the 3kg claim and gets her chance to break through in a race like this. SEETHING SEB (7) will be at peak fitness for this and drawn to get a soft run from gate two. Looks a top-three player. SASIL ESROH (11) placed over this journey last time out and is one for the multiples. OPAL GLORY (2) will be rock-hard fit and may earn some minor money. KINGDOM OF GOLD (6) is a massive market watch on debut.
SELECTIONS: Millennium Jewel to win.
ORANGE: RACE 1 @ 1:35 PM
CINQUE TORRI (2) went under by 3.2L as favourite at this track and trip last time out after back-to-back wins prior to that. Back in grade with the blinkers applied first time today. Should go to the front and be hard to run down. THE DROVER (1) finished 1.8L off the winner in the same race as Cinque Torri last start and draws much better today. Goes well this track and trip and Buckley sticks which is a great push for his chances. Blinkers go on again and he'll make his presence felt. MANADRIA (4) won well two back before pulling up with a poor recovery rate after his poor performance last start. Gets in light after the 2kg claim and won't be far away. Dean Mirfin-trained duo SUPERGAZE (8) and KIMMYLEE (5) haven't won for some time but have run well here previously. They're worth keeping safe.
SELECTIONS: Expecting Cinque Torri to bounce back and win.
CRANBOURNE: RACE 8 @ 9:45 PM
MIDWEST (4) has won both runs in and keeps improving. In a top barn and keeps the handy 3kg claim. She will ride the speed and can make the hat-trick. TSUNAMI SAM (5) resumes and is also in good hands. Led and won in NZ his only start bringing two big trial wins. The colt looks to have plenty of ability and the late market will tell plenty. PRINCE OF MERCIA (8) wasn't far away at Adelaide off the 1.3L defeat at Bendigo. Peaks and winning rider Kah is reunited. Gets the blinkers again and weight relief and is a winning chance. ABSEILER (6) has been in need of the two runs in. This fellow was just beaten in a Blue Diamond preview a year ago and is one to include at odds.
SELECTIONS: Midwest sets a decent standard.
SUNSHINE COAST: RACE 3 @ 6:38 PM
THELWELL (1) went a bold race last start at Doomben when racing three wide and coming from seventh at the turn to finish second of nine runners at Doomben in a Group 3 event over 1200m at odds of $10. Will appreciate the easier field here and rates as the runner to beat. Blinkers go on for the first time. YANKEE RIVER (3) was only seventh at Doomben last time out over 1200m after a slow start but gets into a field which suits her better. One of the main dangers. MILANO BOOM (6) is a two year old filly on debut out of a Listed winning mare who can surprise, watch the markets on this runner. Blinkers on for the first time. LICENCED AND READY (5) won a recent trial and although she finished last of five runners here last start when on debut can fall into a place at odds.
SELECTIONS: Thelwell looks thrown in to win here.
SUNSHINE COAST: RACE 4 @ 7:08 PM
WINSIDE (7) fought on strongly when finishing fourth of nine runners here over 1000m last start which followed a neck second at Gold Coast over 900m when trying to lead all the way. Hard to ignore his winning chances based on recent runs. AIR SPIRIT (6) is having his third run back from a spell after coming from 11th at the turn last start to finish fifth over 1000m at this track. Has won four races from 12 starts at this track and is one of the leading hopes. MORT DOYLE (3) is having his second run back from a spell and should strip a lot fitter following a last start third of seven at Gold Coast. Winner of four races from 14 previous starts here and is a strong chance to add to that record. INVINCIBLE LAD (2) is fresh-up following an all of the win over 1000m at Tamworth beating seven rivals home. Smart enough to trouble this field fresh-up.
SELECTIONS: Mort Doyle we like each-way.
MACKAY: RACE 8 @ 5:10 PM
YUAN FEN (6) was beaten a nose at long odds when fresh-up here last start over 1200m after getting checked at the start and again with 100m to run. Will strip a lot fitter today and with a clear run should prove hard to beat. BUSTER MOON (3) is racing third-up today from a spell and following a last start fourth of 10 runners over 1200m when leading into the home straight will strip a lot fitter. Should appreciate the extra 100m in distance today having won once from four starts over that trip. DUSKY DAMSEL (5) wasn't that far away last start at Townsville when coming from ninth at the turn to finish fifth of 14 runners over 1200m. Should be right there at the finish. CHAMPAGNE AT DAWN (1) has won three races and placed three times here from nine starts including a victory two back over 1300m when defeating 10 rivals. Can return to winning form in this field.
SELECTIONS: Yuan Fen we like here.
NARROGIN: RACE 4 @ 3:50 PM
IZZY MAY (4) was out-graded two runs in town before coming here and recording an overdue win. Has more weight today but looks capable of repeating. SAX ON QUE (3) has just gone under the last two as favourite with the latest at Albany in stronger class. Has a handy 1.5kg claim and should go close. BOYISH (1) led here second-up and folded late beaten 2.2L. That was a much improved effort and fitter he can't be ruled out. BRAVE CONTENDER (2) resumes and will use the rail. It's been a long time between wins but he won't be far away if presented forward.
SELECTIONS: Going with Izzy May.
HOBART: RACE 1 @ 11:22 AM
PIIINK BEAUTY (8) made a very promising debut and should be even better for that experience, after the 3kg claim she looks the one to beat. ELMAJAY (6) is another that looked smart on debut and has won a trial since then. Winkers added and she looks the main threat to the top selection. BOLD INSTINCT (1) was fair on debut but would have come on with that run and from the handy draw will be right in the finish. FROLAND (2) didn't really know much on debut and only picked up the bit late to finish fourth. He has had a trial since his last start effort and won't be far away. Include in all multiples.
SELECTIONS: Piiink Beauty win bet.

Though this isn’t as much of a drop as it might appear at first glance, since his current connections bought him for just $22k last month at Fasig-Tipton. He’s been beaten by large margins in each of his last couple of starts after running well in his career debut over the summer. However, he was facing much tougher rivals in those races and should fare better against this weaker group. He can obviously win, but I thought there were more intriguing options. I have similar thoughts about Silver Samurai, but I’m more afraid of him due to his early speed. He figure to clear this field early under an aggressive 10-pound bug rider and seems like a real threat to take them all the way up front. Yet he’s another who looks like a short price in a competitive field. My top pick is Bointheback. Some will write him off based on his poor effort here last Friday, but he never had a chance that day when facing a pretty tough field for the maiden special weight level. Progeny of Majestic City have pretty severe distance limitations, so a mile was always going to be a stretch for him. Now he’s turning back to a more appropriate distance while dropping back in for a tag. He put in a pretty game effort at this level two back and might get overlooked despite owning competitive speed figures. There was a time not too long ago when trainer Gregory DiPrima had excellent second off the claim statistics.
RACE 4: GOLANI BRIGADE (#4)
Dark Money may win this race as he makes his first start off the claim for Rudy Rodriguez, but I find him awfully hard to trust. He put in a strong effort to win against weaker company two back at Belmont, but all of his surrounding performances are pretty lackluster. He’s definitely better than this field when he’s at his best, but we’ve seen his top efforts more and more infrequently over the past year. Furthermore, over the past 5 years Rudy Rodriguez is 0 for 11 first off the claim with horses running back in 20 days or less and this horse is running back just 6 days later. I’m similarly skeptical of Durkin’s Call, who is dropping back down in class for Linda Rice. At least in his case I can make excuses for his last two efforts, as he was too close to the pace on Dec. 17 and then was compromised by a speed-favoring track last time. However, Linda Rice isn’t handling this horse with much intention, as she jams him right back into the entries less than a week later. I want some rivals who can be more forwardly placed, both of which are shipping in from Finger Lakes. Writer’s Regret interests me off his blowout victory last time, which earned a competitive speed figure. He’s going out for underrated trainer Ralph D’Alessandro for whom he ran some big races here last year. However, the track could come up wet on Friday and that wouldn’t suit him. My top pick is Golani Brigade. This runner’s recent form at Finger Lakes is solid. He particularly ran well last time when he survived a very fast early pace to hold off a couple of closers. That form was flattered when third-place finisher Fitzpatrick returned to run well at Aqueduct in a tougher spot a few weeks ago. Golani Brigade handles wet tracks and is drawn well outside of his main pace rival.
RACE 5: CUPIDS GIRL (#8)
Shock Leader took a big step forward with the switch to turf last time, which shouldn’t come as a major surprise given her pedigree. She’s a half-sister to multiple turf winners Sand Dancer ($311k) and Shock Leader ($220k), though some other siblings handled both surfaces. She met a pretty good rival in Radio Days in the dirt debut, and seemed more professional overall second time out, showing speed before getting caught at the wire. I just don’t see the value in taking this horse at a relatively short price off turf form. The one switching surfaces who I prefer is Champagne Poetry. She took some notable action on the tote board in her debut to get bet all the way down to 5-2. She was a step slow into stride and then raced in traffic heading into the far turn before getting spun very wide approaching the quarter pole. She finished well all things considered, and the switch to dirt shouldn’t bother her at all. Carpe Diem is a versatile sire, and it’s mostly dirt pedigree on the dam’s side, as the dam is a half-sister to G2 Peter Pan winner Madefromlucky. She makes plenty of sense, but my top pick is another second time starter. Cupids Girl put in an encouraging effort on debut here in late November. She broke very slowly but quickly got herself back into the race on the backstretch. She advanced willingly while following rivals on the far turn, and briefly had to wait for room in upper stretch before switching outside. This filly finished gamely once she got into the clear, displaying some ability despite losing by over 11 lengths. That was a strong field for the level, headed by impressive debut winner Send for Me. She probably isn’t facing a rival that talented this time, and she certainly has room for improvement.

Below is our free Late Pick 4 for Aqueduct:
Aqueduct January 7, 2022
Race 5: Maiden Special Weight
#1 Charlottesometimes is a long shot worth looking at today. She needs to get back to her form on debut, which saw him finish second, but must rebound from a poor start last time out. #3 Glitter Up moves back to the dirt today after a close loss on the turf last time out.
Race 6: Claiming
#1A Cartwheel drops down in class for this race after running third against tougher horses in her last two starts. #2 Cover Photo won at a lower level last time out with ease, which should have him prepared to jump up in class and take on these horses.
Race 7: Allowance
#1 Shalimar Gardens has been facing graded stakes company in her last two starts, which makes this a pretty large drop in class today. #7 Destinationwnrscir ran third at this level last time out, and should improve today, with this being her second start off of the layoff.
Race 8: Maiden Claiming
#3 Tap the Heart will look to improve in this spot with a nice drop down in class today. #2 The Honorable Ruth also will drop down in class after finishing no worse than fourth against tougher horses in four starts.

Busan Friday: Race-By-Race Preview (January 7)
The 2022 racing season gets underway at Busan on Friday with an eight-race card from 12:00 to 18:00. All betting locations are opened but advance reservations must be made through the My Card app. Here are the previews:
Busan Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million
The new year begins with eight three-year-old filly maidens tackling the five-furlongs with four of them racing for the first time. We’ll need to draw a line through the latest effort from (4) HANEUL MISO when she was well positioned but offered little in the stretch, and instead go with what we know she is capable of from two starts back when a close 2nd. She draws well and, in this company, has every chance. (2) HWARANG BRAVO has run adequately in two starts so far. She gets a better gate in this small field today and with a top jockey on, should go closer. A couple of the first timers did well enough in their trials. (5) JEONGDEUN-RO broke well and was on pace and while she was passed by a few, she wasn’t asked for too much effort and ran on well. (6) HWARANG SKY and (7) KF ONE similarly showed promise.
Selections (4) Haneul Miso (2) Hwarang Bravo (5) Jeongdeun-Ro (6) Hwarang Sky
Next Best 7, 8
Fast Start 4, 5, 6, 7
Busan Race 2: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million
(6) JUMAL BOBAE has a 4th and a 2nd in two starts so far, the latest of which was at this distance on November 28th when he came from off the pace to run on strong. With some natural improvement and in this modest company, he can go one better today. (1) DAEHO NURI had a poor day at the office at is latest start when slowly away but if we go on his run two starts back when from a good draw, he got on pace and ran on for 5th, he can be considered for a place here. (8) UNJU BULPAE showed improvement at start number three last time out and cam maintain that positive trajectory here, while (10) SEONGSIL CHOEGO can improve on his 6th place on debut over 1000M. Debut-maker (5) I AM CHARTERED performed well enough in a November trial to suggest he can be competitive first-up.
Selections (6) Jumal Bobae (1) Daeho Nuri (8) Unju Bulpae (10) Seongsil Choego
Next Best 5, 7
Fast Start 2, 4, 8, 10
Busan Race 3: Class 6 (1400M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million
A weak maiden here and it won’t take much improvement from any of them to win. We’ll take a chance on (2) GOSUUI POWER, who returned from over six months off to run 7th of fourteen when drawn wide over 1200M on December 5th. Before the layoff he had shown ability and should have come on for that run. He has a better draw today and this may suit. (8) SENSATION PARTY was a much-improved 3rd when stepped up to this trip on December 3rd. She led for much of the way around that day and while the time wasn’t fast, she looks nicely in here and can go close again. (5) YOUNG BOSS similarly improved at his latest effort in December when 4th at 1300M and from a decent draw can be on pace here and in the hunt. (12) STATICE ran a good 2nd over 1300M on December 12th and after fifteen starts looks close to finally figuring things out. (1) A ONCE another in the frame.
Selections (2) Gosuui Power (8) Sensation Party (5) Young Boss (12) Statice
Next Best 1, 9
Fast Start 2, 5, 10, 11
Busan Race 4: Class 6 (1600M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million
(9) SEONGSIL SONYEO has been knocking at the door for a while. She comes in following a solid 4th place over 1400M and has the fastest time among these at this distance by some margin. Her running style means the draw shouldn’t matter and she could well win this. The question is whether after seventeen attempts, there is any improvement there. (7) ADELE STELLA has run 5th in both starts so far over 1000M and 1200M, both times running on well. He looks like he needs a bot of distance and gets a chance to prove it here. (4) HIT RUNNER was an on pace and improved 4th over 1400M at start number three on December 10th. He draws well to lead again and can go close. (10) GRAND CHUKJE and (2) HAEUNDAE BLUE among others in at least the placing frame.
Selections (9) Seongsil Sonyeo (7) Adele Stella (4) Hit Runner (10) Grand Chukje
Next Best 2, 8
Fast Start 2, 4, 7, 8
Busan Race 5: Class 5 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million
Big and competitive field here. (4) CATCH THE VICTORY returned from four months out to run 2nd at class and distance on December 10th. He comes up a couple of kilos in the weights but draws very well and could be the one to beat here. (1) MIND ZONE pulled off a super gate to wire victory at start number three over 1000M on December 5th. He comes up in class and in trip here but from the inside gate a big performance can’t be ruled out again. (14) COLORFUL WIND pretty much made all on debut over 1000M having previously won a trial too. She is the big loser from the draw but if she can find a decent position then she looks to have plenty of potential and should be in the finish again. (9) WONDERFUL JAZZ and the up in class (8) HOT PLAY are among several others with strong placing chances.
Selections (4) Catch The Victory (1) Mind Zone (14) Colorful Wind (9) Wonderful Jazz
Next Best 8, 13
Fast Start 1, 2, 6, 8
Busan Race 6: Class 5 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million
Another big field, this time fillies and mares only and it is very competitive. We’ll take a chance on (3) BANJIUI GIJEOK. True on her first try at this distance last time she got beaten by three of today’s rivals, but she has a runner-up finish to her name at this class and draws much better today. She has chance at potentially good odds. (4) BARAM GONGJU comes in following a 2nd place at class and distance on December 10th which followed another solid showing a month earlier. She can maintain that positive run of form and go close here. (7) CHEONGMA HWANGHU was a much-improved 2nd at class and distance last time out when leading for much of the way around. She comes up in weight but has a top jockey booked and can go close. (11) BEST HAMSEONG was a disappointing 8th on her first go at this class a month ago but she is a winner at the distance and can improve here. (8) BEST WIND is up in class following a good score over 1300M and is one of many with placing claims.
Selections (3) Banjiui Gijeok (4) Baram Gongju (7) Cheongma Hwanghu (11) Best Hamseong
Next Best 8, 5
Fast Start 3, 6, 11, 13
Busan Race 7: Class 4 (1600M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million
(10) MONGTTANG won back-to-back races in October and November which enabled him to get his chance in the Breeders’ Cup race for juveniles on December 5th. He ran very wide on the corner taking himself out of winning contention that day before working home well. He comes up in trip here and it may well suit. (1) ADELE CROWN is rapidly up in class having won his latest two, both at this distance and last time in emphatic fashion. This is a step up in terms of opposition, but he draws nicely to sit handy, and a hat-trick is a possibility. (9) ROCK PEGASUS worked home strongly to run 2nd in a fast race at class and distance on December 3rd. He has mixed his form and comes up significantly in the weights but can be in the finish again. (2) K K WON and (8) GREAT DANCE among others who can enter the calculations.
Selections (10) Mongttang (1) Adele Crown (9) Rock Pegasus (2) K K Won
Next Best 8, 4
Fast Start 4, 7, 8, 10
Busan Race 8: Class 3 (1800M) Allowance / KRW 75 Million
Great race to end with. (4) COOL GUY is up in class having run 2nd on his first try at this distance on December 17th. The time wasn’t that fast, but he previously ran a very quick mile when winning in November and down in the weights today, looks very much in this. (2) YEONGGWANGUICHUKJE has the fastest time among these for the distance and was 2nd last time on December 5th with a few of today’s rivals behind him having led for much of the way around. He could go close or one better here. (9) GREAT BOSS was 4th in that December 5th race running on from a wide draw. He draws wide and gives weight away again but should be in the hunt. (10) TOP MATE was an also-ran in that December 5th race but has the potential to go better here. (8) POWER WINDY among others capable of finishing in the money.
Selections (4) Cool Guy (2) Yeonggwanguichukje (9) Great Boss (10) Top Mate

Al Cimaglia: Cal Expo Pick 5 Analysis-$75,000 Guaranteed Pool
January 7, 2022 | By Al Cimaglia
Tonight, the 0.20 Pick 5 kicks-off the card at Cal Expo. Due to a $19,556 carryover, there will be a $75,000 guaranteed pool, and the sequence will be my focus.
Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.
Race 1
5-Shes a Showstopper (9/2)-Rough-gaited at times as was the case last week and lost all chance after breaking stride. But can down this crew if races back to the previous start.
6-Brooklyn Moonshine (9/2)-Team Plano entry can dial it up on occasion. Raced near the lead in last but was passed by #1 down the lane. Could be better tonight, was off 3 weeks before the last start and has hit the board in 25 of 46 races at CalX with 9 pictures.
7-Summer Fantasy (5/2)-Not loving the morning line price with this post draw. But best to not overlook. Did finish 2nd to better here and Roland should have in play.
Race 2
1-Hoosier Poppy (2-1)-Makes the 2nd start off the bench and is usually competitive. Versus this field that makes this 4-year-old mare a 2-1 morning line favorite. Lackey could trip out with this post draw.
5-Hongkong B (9/2)-This is a field without much form and has had excuses in both starts here. This will be the 2nd time for Lasix and will take a swing and hope the price is right.
Race 3
2-Wizzel Stix (5/2)-Raced well versus this kind last week and was nipped by a nose. The winner isn't in this field and comes right back in sequence.
4-Daybreak Girl (3-1)-Makes the 4th start since September and takes a meaningful drop. Should be at a level for success and draws well.
7-Cenalta Glory (9/2)-Comes off a nice win against this kind last week. Draws outside and Stewart takes over for Plano so the price could be better. Was used a couple of times in last and this will be the 2nd start on Lasix.
Race 4
1-Howtotrainurdragon (6-1)-Bumps up a notch after getting on the engine and not looking back. But was DQ'd and placed 8th for a pylon violation. Willing to give another chance versus this field.
3-Skyway Raider (2-1)-Should be better here with a positive driver's change and is back in at a level to post a win. On 12-3, dropped and popped with Svendsen driving. The same plan could work here.
Race 5
4-Cut A Rug (3-1)-One of a few that could race off cover and would be helped by honest fractions. Roland will likely leave and try to race near the top of the stack. Can pass a few down the lane if brings his fastball.
5-Marced Magic (9/2)-Plano's choice over the 5-6-8 drops, should like the company and was off almost 3 weeks before the last start. Should be headed for the top. Inconsistent sort has been successful at CalX hitting the board in 20 of 39 with 8 wins.
7-Bobs Time (8-1)-Stewart did well in his first steer, the 5-year-old raced better and the mare minded her manners. That try was at this class and was an improvement. Can surprise at a price if upswing continues.
0.20 Pick 5
5,6,7/1,5/2,4,7/1,3/4,5,7
Total Bet=$21.60

Jeff Siegel's Santa Anita Analysis/Workout Commentary - 1/7/22
January 7, 2022
By Jeff Siegel, Handicapper & Analyst
Specifically designed for the rolling exotic player, Jeff Siegel’s Daily Santa Anita Handicapping Analysis, Wagering Strategies, Workout Commentary, and True Odds Calculations (“TPC”) identify those horses that should be included in daily doubles, pick-3s, pick-4s, pick-5s, and the pick-6.
*
The “TOC” quantifies the findings of a personal thoroughbred analytics program that contains in its database the results of every race contested at Santa Anita since 2004. More than 75 critical factors in the fields of class, distance, surface, age, and sex have created 227 individual
algorithms that are highly specific to the race being handicapped. The result is a probability line that reflects each contender’s true odds based on a pure 100 point takeout.
The “TOC” applies its mathematical formula only to non-maiden races and displays a maximum of four runners considered the most likely contenders to win. Also listed is the specific algorithm’s sample size plus the top-rated horse’s win percentage and return on investment (ROI). It is suggested that the player utilize the program’s findings to compare each contender’s “true odds” with the morning line and/or actual wagering odds to identify potential overlays and underlays.
Also-eligible runners are not included in any of the calculations until verified as actual starters. When possible, adjustments to the “TOC” will be updated after late scratches.

Grade C=Least preferred or pass
Grade X=probable winner but likely at odds too short to play

RACE 1: Post: 12:30 PT Grade: B
Use (in order of preference): 2-Moody Jim; 1-Dubby Dubbie
Forecast: Since he’s been away since November of 2019, it’s anybody’s guess as to what shape Moody Jim (TOC=7-1; M:-5/2) is in but the now six-year-old first time gelding looked pretty good in a recent workout (see below) so with the presence of F. Prat in the saddle let’s assume the J. Mullins-trained ex-classer is fit enough to win in his first start for a claiming price. A winner over the local lawn as a 3-year-old, the son of Midshipman has back numbers that are good enough to beat this field, so let’s hope he can flash his old form and produce a winning late kick at or near his morning line of 5/2. Dubby Dubbie (TOC=9/2; ML=2-1) lands the rail and seems certain to employ gate-to-wire tactics. Clearly most effective when he’s able to establish the running, the J. Sadler-trained gelding knows how to win races (he’s eight-for-32), switches to Johnny V., and catches a favorable pace scenario. We’re expecting to see the son of Ice Box fire his best shot. We’ll prefer Moody Jim on top but include both in our rolling exotics.
Notable Workouts:
Moody Jim (December 16, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:01h TT). Grade: B+
Easy solo training track breeze for J. Mullins, final three furlongs in :12 flat and :36.3, plenty left late, never asked. Been away since November of 2019 and once had some quality, seems in fairly good shape on the comeback trail as a first-time gelding and should be a live item first time back in the proper spot for a barn that has solid stats with layoff runners.

Kazan (December 17, Santa Anita, 4f, :49.4h). Grade: B-
Broke off a couple of lengths in front of Nazuna (4f, :49.2h) and was head-and-head with that one through the lane, mild urging while perhaps a tad second best. Seems in okay shape, needs grass to show his best stuff.
View Workout Video
Best Chance (December 18, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:01.4h). Grade: B
Easy five furlong breeze while even but a tad the best with Dream Princess (same time) for J. Sadler, final half mile in :12 flat, :24.1 and :49.2, steady throughout with something left late. Might be able to perk up with a class drop.

RACE 2: Post: 1:00 PT Grade: B-
Use (in order of preference): 1-Starship Defiant; 4-Flat Out Joy
Forecast: Starship Defiant (TOC=8/5; ML=5/2) was a clever winner in a softer (nw-2) $12,500 main track miler 11 days ago and today shortens to seven furlongs while moving up in class while seeking a repeat score that looks well within her capabilities. With A. Cedillo committed to Flat Out Joy, trainer R. Hess, Jr. picks up F. Prat, who’ll likely try gate-to-wire tactics from her inside draw in a field without much early speed. Both of her career wins have been accomplished over the Santa Anita main track, so stick the daughter of Empire Way on top while also including on our ticket Flat Out Joy (TOC=2-1; ML=2-1). A one-paced grinder who usually prefers to run second or third (nine times) rather than win, the veteran mare was a beaten choice when a non-threatening third at this level at Del Mar in late November but has won over this track in the past and has hit the board in all three of here outings at this seven furlong trip.

RACE 3: Post: 1:35 PT Grade: B-
Use (in order of preference): 7-Cleopatra’s Strike; 9-Keystone Field
Forecast: This grass grab bag has nine entrants, and none can be tossed out with any degree of confidence. We’ll try to get by using just two, but the best advice is to include as many as your budget allows. Cleopatra’s Strike (TOC=4-1; M:=4-1) has won since who knows when, but the ex-classer actually is in pretty good form right now (in the frame in four of his last five starts) and drops to his lowest level ever. At age nine and with just four career wins, the son of Smart Strike certainly isn’t one to trust but on pure numbers he’s a solid fit so perhaps with the switch to K. Desormeaux he might be able to produce a winning late kick. Keystone Field TOC=6/5; M:=8/5)shows up in a seller for the first time and may have found his friends. The outside draw does him no favors but he’s another with speed figures that fit at this level and a repeat of his game win two runs back – when given a patient ride that probably brings out his best – should put him in the thick of things late.
Notable Workouts:
Family Biz (January 1, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:03.1h TT). Grade: B-
Slow and easy in training track breeze for J. Mullins, final three furlongs in :12.1 and :36.4 (may have gone a bit faster than given). Seems healthy and may improve, though her form since being claimed for $40,000 last summer at Del Mar has been dreadful.
View Workout Video
French Getaway (January 1, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:03.4h). Grade: C
Slow and easy to the top, then was ridden a bit through the lane but never really got much going, final half mile in :12.4, :25.2 and :51.1 for K. Mulhall. Nothing to get excited about.
View Workout Video
Builder (January 2, Santa Anita, 4f, :48.3h). Grade: C+
In company inside Cosmo (4f, :48.2h) and was second while about a length back at the wire despite being ridden some in the final furlong (workmate going easily), final half mile in :23.3 and :48.2 on our watches. Just an average work by veteran gelding in D. O’Neill barn.
View Workout Video
Keystone Field (December 20, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:01.4h). Grade: B-
Finished more than a length behind Dogtag (5f, 1:01.3h) for R. Mandella, splits of :12 flat, :23.4, :35.2 and 1:02 flat on our watches, not bad while mostly galloping through the lane. Seemed to handle the dirt okay so that could be an option down the road. Probably wants a class drop.

RACE 4: Post: 2:05 PT Grade: B+
Use (in order of preference: 2-Lil’s Big Shot; 4-For Love Not Money
Forecast: Lil’s Big Shot (TOC=10-1; ML=6-1) didn’t break sharply, was bounced around in tight quarters down the backstretch to lose valuable position, then finished with some interest without being knocked about and ran better the line shows when unplaced in her debut at Los Alamitos vs. maiden $50,000 foes last month. We’re expecting a much better performance today. The daughter of Mr. Big looked very sharp in a recent team drill (see below) and appears to have more than enough natural speed to outrun this bottom-rung group with a clean trip. She’s 6-1 on the morning line and is a gamble at or near that price. For Love Not Money (TOC=4/5; M:=5/2) should be included in your rolling exotics as well. Freshened since October when the wheels came off at 7/5 in race over a mile at this level, the daughter of Tiznow has looked fairly decent (see below) in recent a.m. activity and seems certain to be a better type this time around. The M. Glatt-trained filly earned a number three races back sprinting vs. maiden special weight company that puts her right there. Both should be used in rolling exotic play with preference on top to Lil’s Big Shot
Notable Workouts:
Lil’s Big Shot (January 2, Santa Anita, 4f, :48.4h). Grade: B
In blinkers, inside Really Big News (same time) for T. Yakteen while under a stout hold throughout and able to go faster if permitted, splits of :11.2, :23.2 and :48.4, better work than the final time might indicate. Didn’t get the best of runs when unplaced in her debut last month but we suspect she’ll produce a significant forward move with that bit of experience behind her. Eligible to surface in a very soft spot.
View Workout Video
For Love Not Money (December 10, Santa Anita, 4f, :50.1h). Grade: B-
Broke off about four lengths in front of Head Start (4f, :49.2h) and wound up slightly in front at the wire and then out to the seven furlong pole, never asked at any stage, splits of :12.3 and :37.4 to the wire before continuing out in :50.2 on our watches. Slow time but actually looked okay, bottom-rung maiden claimer certainly should be capable of improving last try.
View Workout Video
Golden Halo (December 19, Santa Anita, 4f, :49.4hg). Grade: C+
In blinkers, sluggish leaving the gate but then got going, wasn’t asked, and wound up even but best in half mile gate drill with Lemon Sushi (same time) for V. Brinkerhoff, splits of :25.1, :37.1 and :49.4, fair move. Blinkers may help a bit, but we’d like to see better gate quickness. Needs softest foes possible on this circuit.

Use (in order of preference): 2-Mesut; 1-Wipe the Slate
Forecast: Mesut (TOC=3/2; ML=2-1) hasn’t won in nearly three years but is superior on speed figured against this group so if he’s ever going to break the streak, this looks like an ideal spot to do it. The C. Gaines-trained gelding has two career wins – both of this turf course – and most recently finished a strong runner-up in a similar spot over this course and distance during the fall season. An unspectacular but solid and healthy recent work tab should have him fit and ready. Wipe the Slate (TOC=2-1; ML=5/2) was just claimed back by D. O’Neill out of a sharp winning race at five furlongs on grass at Del Mar that produced a career top speed figure. The son of Nyquist is protected today in a sign of confidence and recent workouts (see below) tell us he’s ready to produce another forward move. From the rail, he should be on or near the lead throughout.
Notable Workouts:
Wipe the Slate (January 2, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:00.2h). Grade: B
Never rally asked at any stage, splits of :12.1, :23.4, :35.3 and 1:00.3 on our watches, steady and even while holding his form. Was reclaimed by D. O’Neill out winning effort for $50,000 at Del Mar in mid-November; has starter’s allowance conditions.
View Workout Video
Quick Finish (December 19, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:00h). Grade: B+
Broke off slightly in front of Hit the Road (same time) for D. Blacker and maintained the advantage to the end without being asked, quite nice with splits of :12.1, :24 flat, :35.3 and 1:00.1 on our watches, something left late (workmate had to be asked a bit). Solid move, looks good, but it’s been a long time since he won. Workmate had to be niggled out to stay close, didn’t look all that great but is a grass horse working on the main track so not much more could have been expected.
View Workout Video
First Prez (January 1, Santa Anita, 4f, :49.2h). Grade: B-
In blinkers in easy solo breeze for J. Mullins, final three furlongs in :12.1 and :37.1. Looks fine, might enjoy a return to his $20,000 claim level.

RACE 6: Post: 3:05 PT Grade: B
Use (in order of preference: 6-Destiny’s Journey; 5-Take a Leap
Forecast: Destiny’s Journey (TOC=4/5; ML=9/5) will most likely be the controlling speed as she usually is, and with this slight drop in class the veteran daughter of Paynter looks well-spotted to regain her winning form. First or second in five of seven career starts over the Santa Anita main track, the S. Knapp-trained mare retains regular rider A. Cedillo and is logically the one to beat at 9/5 on the morning line. Take a Leap (TOC=10-1; ML=5/2) is worth inclusion in rolling exotic play as well, even though the analytics say no. First-off- the-claim (and dropping a notch) for clever trainer V. Cerin (23% with a massive ROI with this angle, the seven-year-old mare picks up the barn’s “go-to” rider K. Desormeaux and projects to be the most dangerous of the closers. She’s a perfect one-for-one over the Santa Anita main track and has been first or second in 11 of 27 career starts.
Notable Workouts:
Noble Contessa (December 17, Santa Anita, 6f, 1:19.1h). Grade: C+
Very slow final time but didn’t look bad while second best with Another Eddie (5f, 1:04.1h), never asked at any stage, splits of :25.1, :50.2 and 1:03.3 from the half mile pole out to the seven furlong pole. Veteran mare has been away since March but seems to be coming back in good enough shape. Likely to return in a very soft spot for E. Truman.

RACE 7: Post: 3:35 PT Grade: B+
Use (in order of preference): 7-She’s So Nice; 6-Javanica; 3-Thrilling
Forecast: The analytics can't see it, but we loved the way She’s So Nice (TOC=13-1; ML=4-1) accelerated during the late stages of her win over the local flat turf course during the fall meeting and while she’s up a notch in class in her first outing in nearly three months the P. D’Amato-trained import has the proper this unique Hillside course and should be capable of winning once again. The Irish-bred four-yar-old has been working steadily for several weeks to tick her over, retains R. Gonzalez, and figures to have a pace scenario that will compliment her late running style. Javanica (TOC=10-1); ML=4-1), as well, should be running on strongly late as well. The daughter of Medaglia d’Oro has been routing most of her career, but she does show a good runner-up try in the listed Glorious Song Stakes at Woodbine back in the fall of 2020 and this return to a sprint should allow the Godolphin homebred to settle early and blast home late. Thrilling (TOC=4/5; ML=7/2) will press the pace but could have company every step of the way. She beat a first-level allowance field over the flat course during the fall season with speed figure that makes her a fit at this level, but the very quick Greg’s Diva in the field we’re expecting the winner to among those that will be running on strongly late.
Notable Workouts:
Spirit of Bermuda (January 2, Santa Anita, 4f, :49.3h TT). Grade: C+
In blinkers, shadow roll, solo training track drill for S. Callaghan, final three furlongs in :11.3 and :36.4, not really asked much. Just an average move but maybe needs turf, hard to say how she fits on this circuit
View Workout Video
Thrilling (January 1, Santa Anita, 4f, :48.4h). Grade: C+
Ridden a bit through the lane in solo drill for M. McCarthy, splits of :12 flat and :37 flat for the final three furlongs. Okay move, nothing special, prefers turf.
View Workout Video
Sensible Cat (December 18, Santa Anita, 6f, 1:14.4h). Grade: B-
Broke off about six lengths in front of Closing Remarks (same time) and finished head-and-head with much classier workmate at the wire while being urged through the lane (‘Remarks not asked), splits of :25 flat, :37.1 and 1:02 flat to the wire being urged out to the seven furlong pole to be up in 1:14.3 for a full six furlongs on our watches. Been away since May, is a grass specialist working on dirt so not much more should have been expected.
View Workout Video
Greg’s Diva (January 2, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:03.2h). Grade: C+
In blinkers, wasn’t asked through the lane in solo training track move for P. D’Amato but was wanting to lean in just a bit, final quarter mile in :25.3. We’ve seen her look better, but recent form has been excellent so it’s hard to be too critical.

RACE 8: Post: 4:05 PT Grade: A-
Use (in order of preference): 1-Adare Manor; 3-Micro Share
Forecast: Adare Manor (TOC=4/5; ML=9/5) shows the two-sprints-and-a-stretch-out pattern that we love and since her most recent start in November at Del Mar the B. Baffert-trained filly has looked spectacular in the morning. The daughter of Uncle Mo lands the good rail and seems certain to employ gate-to-wire tactics based on her draw and the projected race shape. Her numbers are solid, the switch to Johnny V. is a positive, so we’re pretty much all in on this talented sophomore filly that listed as the co-second choice on the morning line at 9/5. We’ll take that price right now if we can get it. Micro Share (TOC=9/2; ML=8/5) closed a gap sprinting after a slow start in a promising debut while finishing a nose in front of Adare Manor in that same mid-November affair and seems certain to improve with experience and distance. ‘Manor is the quicker of the two, though, and that’s she gets preference, but we’ll include the R. Mandella-trained daughter of Upstart on our rolling exotic ticket as well, at least as a back-up or a saver.
Notable Workouts:
Adare Manor (January 2, Santa Anita, 4f, :49.1h). Grade: B+
In blinkers, looked quite good for B. Baffert inside Under the Stars (same time) while even but perhaps a tad the best with Under the Stars (same time) and Rantanen (5f, 1:03.1h, tied in at quarter pole), working under a stout pull to the wire before continuing out in good style to the seven furlong pole, splits of :12.1, :24.4, :49 flat (to the wire) before continuing out an extra eighth to be up in 1:01.2 on our watches. Daughter of Uncle Mo has the prerequisite two-sprints-and-a-stretch-out pattern and should produce a significant forward move going long next time out. Chance to be a decent sort, at the very least.
View Workout Video
Muy Chistosa (January 1, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:00.3h). Grade: B
Worked outside Con on the Run (5f, 1:00.4h) and was best in solid fashion for J. Mullins, a length clear at the wire under mild coaxing, final three furlongs in :11.3 and :36.2. Daughter of Practical Joke has been one-paced in her sprints; should have no issue with a stretch out to two-turns.
View Workout Video
Micro Share (January 2, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:01.2h). Grade: B-
Was ridden a bit through the lane and was about a half-length back at the way with Vivacious Vanessa (6f, 1:13.4h, out to seven furlong pole), slow early but okay through the lane, final quarter mile in a solid :24.2. Daughter of Upstart probably will improve with experience and distance, was hoping for a bit more but workmate is a tough customer.
View Workout Video
Indy’s Star (January 2, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:02.4h). Grade: B-
Worked outside C J Express (same time) for P. Eurton and was doing little more than galloping in the final furlong, :25.3 from the quarter pole home while stride-for-stride to the wire. Acts like a distance type and probably can be expected to improve with experience and added ground.

RACE 9: Post: 4:35 PT Grade: B+
Use (in order of preference): 4-Sweet Soulmate; 2-Dramatizer
Forecast: This $50,000 claiming turf miler for older fillies and mares looks made to order for Sweet Soulmate (TOC=5-1; M:=5/2). The daughter of Twirling Candy removes blinkers (love that angle), switches to F. Prat, and was quite impressive in a recent training track team drill for P. D’Amato that indicates she’s ready for a significant forward move. First or second in five of nine career starts, she does her best work on the front end and could easily make the running, though if other speed develops (Lila At the Beach, etc.) there’s no reason she can’t stalk, pounce and go. She’s a play at or near her morning line at 5/2. Dramatizer (TOC=9/5; ML=3-1) is the most dangerous of the closers, and after being freshened since early September, the daughter of Exaggerator returns for new trainer R. Alvarado following a healthy series of drills at San Luis Rey Downs. She could easily be a better type now and has races when facing tougher foes that make her quite dangerous. We’ll have tickets using both in our rolling exotics, with the main punch going to Sweet Soulmate.
Notable Workouts:
Badger Kitten (January 2, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:01.4h TT). Grade: B-
Under a hold inside Flint Stroll (same time) for P. D’Amato, final three furlongs in :12.1 and :36.4. Maintenance drill, broke her maiden in decent style at Del Mar in late November and will get tested on the raise.
View Workout Video
Cecile’s Chapter (December 13, Santa Anita, 4f, :48h TT). Grade: B
Nice and easy in solo half mile training track breeze for J. Gutierrez, final quarter in a sharp :24 flat without ever being asked. Was winless last year but seems in good shape, need to be realistically spotted.
View Workout Video
Sweet Soulmate (December 17, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:00h TT). Grade: B+
No blinkers, relaxed nicely between horses and was slightly best at the wire in three-horse team drill with Bodhicitta (5f, :59.4h TT, broke off a length behind) and Vulin (5f, 1:01.2h TT), finishing nicely without pressure, final three furlongs in :11.4 and :36 flat, quite nice for R. Baltas. Equipment change should help, appears ready for another forward move.

Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks
Golden Gate - Race #5
Picks Notes
#2 Lemon Zinger He's always a little bit dicey late in the lane, but he has what appears to be controlling pace with this group, and he's getting in with the easiest group he has ever seen. He can wire these.
#7 Mr Botanicals He's a really reliable finisher, but he always seems to come alive just a little bit too late to land it. Not sure he's getting the right setup to get over the top today.
#5 Union Bliss He might have a little bit of upside while cutting back, but he'll make his first start off the claim while not taking a really positive barn change. Not sure what to make of him here, but he should get a decent go of things from a spying spot.
Race Summary Lemon Zinger is probably not offering the 3/1 ML price, but he looks like the right one while dropping in class for this one. His early ability might be a bit too much for this cheap group.
Golden Gate - Race #7
Picks Notes
#8 Lightning Star He just took a leisurely spin around the track in his debut, and he may have just a touch of upside while making this second start. There is absolutely no finishing ability in this group, so maybe he sits back and tries to rally late.
#5 Better Tomorrow Interested to see what he can do while losing the blinkers and running as a gelding for the first time, but I wouldn't want to sign up for too short a price on this guy, as he might be vulnerable late.
#3 Mizzen Power He might like the new footing while trying synthetic for the first time, and he's getting into an easier spot than he has seen through three starts so far. Not impossible, but I fear he might be a little overbet.
Race Summary Lightning Star should be able to take back in the early going in a race where most of them want to be right up near the top. If he can move forward in this second start while getting a decent pace to kick at, he might be able to play here at a price.
Golden Gate - Race #8
Picks Notes
#1 Squared Shady She goes outside in after drawing posts 10 and 12 in her most recent starts, and I'm hoping they are willing to try for a trip while hugging the rail just behind some very sharp pace signed on. Maybe she gets towed into the splits a bit at a price?
#5 Grinningeartoear She proved a good fit at the level on turf last time out, and she has the right running style for a race with serious pace. She should get a great trip while settling just a touch off the pace, and she looks like the one to beat.
#8 Ima Happy Cat She was in the mix until midstretch when trying stakes company last time out, and she at least gets the best of the pace draws to attack the other speed from the outside. Grinningeartoear had her number on the grass a couple starts back, but this one seems best of the pace.
Race Summary Squared Shady will get burned up if she tries to go from the fence with a few razor-sharp pace types further outside, but I wonder if she might be able to inherit a decent trip tracking the pace by way of being outrun a bit early. Price player intrigues.

Meadowlands - Race #5
Picks Notes
#7 GO SANDY GO Rallied to win in amateur drivers' race here to punctuate a solid season.
#9 JUXTA COWGIRL Just missed in two straight, then couldn't sustain rally from post 10.
#4 DARKRSHADEOFPALE N Gapped cover on turn, finished willingly, better suited to Big M than smaller ovals.
Race Summary Go Sandy Go won eight times last year, including a December rally at the Meadowlands, and gets a driver upgrade in a suspect field, so give her the nod. Play a 4-7-9 exacta box.
Woodbine-Mohawk Park - Race #8
Picks Notes
#6 MACH IMPACT Classy 7yo can carry speed the distance off another claim.
#5 GOLDINTHEBADLANDS Won three in a row after 1-29 run to start last year.
#8 OUTKAST BLUE CHIP Plays to a steady beat, draws outside, seeks 30th win.
Race Summary Mach Impact blew a clear lead in his last three starts as a strong favorite. But he can make maximum use of his speed in this spot and could return a quick claim dividend for his new barn. Bet on him to win and place. .
Cal-Expo - Race #1
Picks Notes
#1 CAPITOL HILL Swept past the field at 34-1, moves outside in, can do it again.
#7 SUMMER FANTASY Game second behind 3-to-5 winner in fast race.
#4 JENNIE ANN Last not true, can be forward factor on best at inflated price.
Race Summary Capitol Hill was hard used three starts ago, diverted from her normal tactics two back, then looped many of the same rivals en route to a 34-1 upset last week. She can further validate that effort with a move from post 7 to the rail. Play 1-4 and 1-7 exactas.

Gulfstream Park - Race #2
Picks Notes
#3 He's Royalty Was in over his head in a handicap last out and can return to good form with this drop in class.
#2 The Great Oz Lacked a good start and he never got involved last out and is another on the class drop; can get a better run at it today.
#4 Loyal Louie Lost a photo at a similar level two back and probably make a decent late run vs. these.
Race Summary He's Royalty never got remotely close in a handicap last out and is back to more familiar rivals; big player for this price.
Gulfstream Park - Race #5
Picks Notes
#3 Souper Legacy Ran vs. Grade 1 foes at Woodbine and is well placed for his first since October.
#5 Birdman Richie Was on the board in all five starts and will show speed here; was a well beaten second last out but should get closer in this one.
#7 Hey Porter Was fourth going long last out and could pick up some pieces if the top contenders don't like the distance.
Race Summary Souper Legacy has taken on better rivals and can be in the mix from the outset.
Gulfstream Park - Race #8
Picks Notes
#8 Midnight Ballerina Has been in good races and was fourth in a good allowance last out at Churchill; can show some late energy against these.
#9 Join the Dots Was an impressive winner in her only start and should appreciate the two turns.
#7 Family Time Showed speed in races in Kentucky and New York and can be difficult to catch here.
Race Summary Midnight Ballerina gets a good pace to follow and can move up with more distance.

Fair Grounds Race Course Selections for January 7, 2022 – Horse Racing Picks
We’re off and running on the racetrack Friday at the BetOnline racebook. BetOnline has a monster card on Friday.
There are 15 thoroughbred racecourses available for wagering in the US. It feels like a summer card, except the fact that there isn’t much stakes racing.
Industry Leading 9% Cashback!
There are only six races scheduled to be run on Saturday. The biggest stakes race is the $200,000 Santa Ynez Stakes (Gr. 2) at Santa Anita Park. Santa Anita has one stakes event on the card in this one.
Elsewhere, the biggest race on the docket is the $150,000 Pippin Stakes. This isn’t much for a stakes weekend, but there are a lot of betting options nonetheless.
Our first stop is at Fair Grounds Race Course in New Orleans. Find our best Fair Grounds picks for January 7, 2022 below.

Race is is a $16,000 event covering a mile and 70 yards on the dirt. Look at Da Gold Room and Canihaveitlike that to do something meaningful.
Da Gold Room is a two-time winner in 27 career starts. In his last win, Da Gold Room won an $8,500 event on August 22. He’s gone winless in four races.
The gelding most recently showed 3rd on December 17 for a $16,000 prize. That form puts Da Gold Room in competitive standing on Friday.
Canihaveitlikethat has won just two races in 30 outings. However, he’s coming on and based on recent form has a good chance Friday.
In his last race, Canihaveitlike placed 2nd behind Upham by a head for a $16,000 purse. He was well ahead of Da Gold Room by 5 ¼ lengths. This time looks doable for a win.

The fourth at Fair Grounds is an $18,000 race covering 1 1/16 miles. Flying Fred and Unorthodox should have a chance to win.
Flying Fred has finished 11th, 6th in two attempts, and should have a better opportunity in this one. He opened as a rookie on October 27 in an $84,000 race in 11th, and then 6th for a $40,000 race on December 14.
Down to $18,000, look at Flying Fred to have an impact in the stretch run. He should face resistance from Unorthodox in the stretch.
Unorthodox is winless in nine career starts, but is heating up recently. In his last three, he’s gone 4th, 3rd, 2nd and showing improvement.
Unorthodox placed 2nd behind Koufax for an $18,000 purse on December 17 after showing 3rd on November 28 in the same class.
He has to be considered, though Flying Fred on the class drop at this price looks worthy of a play. Flying Fred should give a good account on Friday.

Race 7 covers a mile and 70 yards for $46,000 on the dirt. Distorted Verve and Misty Veil should have a big say in this one.
Distorted Verve has finished 8th, 10th, 1st, 5th, 5th, 5th in six races in her career. She was a winner on April 30 at Churchill Downs for a $115,000 purse.
Since then, Distorted Verve has finished 5th in three straight races. In her most recent attempt, she was 5th for a $127,000 assignment. The class drop should help plenty.
Misty Veil is 2 for 12 and has finished in the top-3 in her previous six races. In her last win, Misty Veil beat High Fashion by 7 ¾ lengths at Churchill Downs for a $60,000 purse.
That was too easy on Misty Veil. She has been competitive up in class since then. The filly most recently showed 3rd on November 18 in a $127,000 race. That was impressive on those terms.
On a transfer from Churchill Downs to Fair Grounds, expect Misty Veil to prevail in a $46,000 race over another class dropper.

Delta Downs Selections for January 7, 2022 – Horse Racing Picks
BetOnline has a big card this Friday. You aren’t going to find much stakes racing, but plenty of options across 15 thoroughbred racecourses in the US.
Industry Leading 9% Cashback!
You can find some of the big players like Santa Anita Park, Aqueduct Racetrack, and Oaklawn Park are offering cards this afternoon. Fair Grounds has racing in New Orleans today as well.
The biggest event is at Santa Anita with the running of the $200,000 Santa Ynez Stakes (Gr. 2). I’m passing on the Santa Anita card, and instead, playing two cards elsewhere.
We’re at Fair Grounds and Delta Downs on Friday afternoon. This is an all-Louisana day in New Orleans and Vinton. Delta Downs has a $247,000 card on offer today. Find our best Delta Downs picks for January 7, 2021 below.

The first outing at Delta Downs is a $38,000 event covering 5 furlongs on the dirt. Sadie’s Ransom and Sho Nuff should have a strong presence in this one.
Sadie’s Ransom is winless as a rookie on December 20. The filly finished 6th in a $45,000 assignment on December 20. More was expected from that debut, but a class drop should help.
Sho Nuff is winless in five races, going 5th, 6th, 2nd, 4th, 2nd in her previous five assignments. She is coming off a productive run on December 4, so that form could translate into a win on Friday.
Sho Nuff placed 2nd behind Bridled Up by a half-length for a $38,000 prize. That was a good effort for Sho Nuff. She looks comfortable in this class and should be the best if she runs a similar race.

Race 4 is a $12,000 event covering 5 furlongs on the dirt. Frank the Mayor and Oneholylion should have a chance to go to the winner’s circle this afternoon.
Oneholylion has a low strike rate with 5 wins in 50 attempts. He has finished 3rd, 3rd, 6th in his previous three assignments and his team finally gave in and dropped classes.
In his latest attempt, Oneholylion finished 6th in a $40,000 race on December 10. That was an alright attempt given the level I suppose.
Before that race, he showed 3rd on October 21 for a $12,000 race. Back to that class, expect Oneholylion to be more competitive in this one.
Frank the Mayor is 3 for 19 in his career and should be competitive on Friday. He’s finished 4th, 4th, 6th in his last three events.
Frank the Mayor came in 6th in his most recent attempt on December 30. That was an alright performance given the difficulty level for a $16,000 purse.
Down in class and distance, Frank the Mayor should be a tough runner. A loss in this type of race would be a major disappointment. Expect Frank the Mayor to be the best if he’s interested.

Post Time: 4:12 p.m. CST
Distance: 5 Furlongs
Purse:$75,000
The $75,000 Orleans Stakes is the only stakes race of the week in North America. Boyd owns Delta Downs, which owns the Orleans in Las Vegas, so I have to assume that’s where the name comes from. In this 5-furlong event, look at Kela’s Turn and Cilla to have a big chance.
Kela’s Turn is 7 for 12 in her career, and has finished in the top-3 in nine straight attempts. In her last three outings, Kela’s Turn has finished 1st, 1st, 3rd.
Two races back, Kela’s Turn struck in the $100,000 Treasure Chest Stakes with a 1 length win over Becca’s Rocket on November 12. This followed a 4 length win for a $42,000 prize.
The filly failed to make it a hat-trick on December 14 in the $75,000 Pan Zareta Stakes. She settled for 3rd and is looking for better in the Orleans. Cilla should be there to give her a fight.
Cilla is 5 for 12 and has experience in graded races. She has finished 1st, 1st, 1st, 3rd, 2nd in her last five and looks good to compete in a $75,000 ungraded stakes race.
Cilla was a half-length winner in the $250,000 Prioress Stakes (Gr. 2) on September 4 at Saratoga for her most recent winning run.
Following that attempt, she has finished 3rd in the $250,000 Lexus Raven Run Stakes (Gr. 2). Then in her most recent race, Cilla placed 2nd behind Ova Charged by ¾ lengths in the $100,000 Louisana Champions Day Ladies Sprint on December 11.
This looks like a good spot down in class for Cilla to regain her winning ways.

Aqueduct Hotlist - January 7 January 6, 2022
Today’s New York Hot List races to watch – Friday, January 7, 2022 at Aqueduct
By Matt Shifman and Bob Ehalt
Hot List Key:
A: A preferred horse to watch B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worse
* - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.
3rd race [NY, Md 40000, 6 ½ F] – (9) Gimmedamoney moves from the barn of Michael Maker to that of Mike Catalano who is based at Parx. He drops into the claiming ranks for the first time with three speed figures that top this field of state-breds. (2) Silver Samurai could be the lone speed in this field. Last time he set the pace and then finished third. (3) Winetastic will drop into a claimer and move to the dirt for his second career start for Jorge Abreu. (8) Southern Civility will make the first start of his career for veteran trainer Pat Reynolds.
5th race [Md Sp Wt, 6F] – (4) Champagne Poetry (B) made her career debut last month in a turf sprint at odds of 5-2. She raced greenly, had to steady, and still finished third. (3) Glitter Up will move from turf to dirt while exiting the same race as the Hot List horse that she beat after setting the pace. Her pedigree says that she should handle dirt racing. (9) Continentalcongres has good efforts on both turf and dirt and gets a positive rider change to Lezcano. (8) Cupids Girl finished mid-pack in her debut at Aqueduct in November after a less than ideal start.
7th race [NY, Alw 72000, 1 mi] – (1) Shalimar Gardens was fourth in a pair of Grade 2 races and now drops back to the first-level allowance for the first time in her career. She broke her maiden at Belmont Park by more than 11 lengths. (7) Destinationwnrscir was third at this level last time following a four-month layoff for trainer Charlie Baker who is having a strong Aqueduct meeting. (3) Left Leaning Lucy has three good performances against open company in claimers and now goes back to state-bred competition. (4) Voice of Spring was a maiden special winner back in May and returns here for Linda Rice.
8th race [NY, Md 25000, 6F] – (1) Endless Crusade set the pace in her last two starts at the $40,000 level, finished second and third, and now gets a favorable rider change to Jose Ortiz. (2) The Honorable Ruth has four career starts and hit the board in all of them. Now, she drops to this low level for the first time. (6) Half Birthday tried a NY Stallion Series race and got overwhelmed but was competitive in her first two starts. (7) Rock Lobster will make her debut for Rudy Rodriguez who is dangerous with first-timers that are in for a tag.
Best bets: Champagne Poetry (5th); Shalimar Gardens (7th). Best value: Gimmedamoney (3rd); Endless Crusade (8th).

*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches in the final 3 minutes and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worse
* - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.
3rd race – (3) Partner’s Hope rallied for second last time and seems well-placed for a victory here. (8) Julius the Great should appreciate the distance and switch to Tapeta. (5) Stribling has speed and will be dangerous here. (7) Midnight Tequila should be more competitive in a claimer. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-5-7-8. Doubles: 3-5-7-8 with 1-2-6-8.
4th race – (8) Batter Up Bud (B) rallied belatedly in his debut and now adds Lasix and blinkers. Should prove best here. (1) Hoorayhoorayhooray was third in his first three starts and can figure in the exacta again. (2) Klugman is working sharply for his debut and may emerge as the main threat. (6) Stone Age is another firster who could be a serious factor here. Betting strategy: 8 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-6-8
6th race – (2) Vocalize is a firster from Pletcher who should win at first asking. (4) Big Invasion can make his presence felt in his career debut. (3) American Starlet debuts for Ward and this filly cannot be ignored. (1) Comedic, another filly facing the boys, has enough speed to benefit from a rail trip. Betting strategy: 2 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-3-4.
8th race – (2) Confident comes off a sharp win at Woodbine and should prove best in this spot. (9) Join the Dots was impressive in a October debut win at Belmont and figures to be the main rival. (8) Midnight Ballerina returned from a layoff of more than a year in the slop. Should take a step forward here on a dry track. (4) Met in Miami may revert to winning form on dirt. Betting strategy: 2 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-4-8-9. Doubles: 2-4-8-9 with 1-5-6-8.
9th race – (6) Mutasaabeq has not raced in a little more than a year but is working sharply and should be another comeback winner for Pletcher. (5) Collaborate has also been absent for a while since a stakes race and should be a force if there’s no rust from the layoff. (8) Bank On Shea returns for new connections and is worth a look. (1) Chocolate Bar may appreciate the switch to the main track. Betting strategy: 6 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-5-6-8.

NBA | Kings vs Nuggets
Play on: Nuggets -8½ -110 at BetVegas
My free play is on the Den Nuggets at 9:10 ET.
The Kings and Nuggets meet tonight in Denver. The Kings are just 16-24, leaving them 11th in the West, a half-game out of sneaking into the NBA's "Play-In" round, which features the 7-10 seeds playing for the last two playoff spots. Injuries and COVID-19 absences have piled up for the Nuggets but Denver checks in at 18-18. That gives them the No. 7 seed but the team is just ONE game back of the West's No. 5 seed.
The Kings won't have center Richaun Holmes (12.6 & 8.7) against Denver after he went into COVID-19 protocol on Saturday. Terence Davis (9.5) sat out Wednesday's game with an ankle injury, and Chimezie Metu (9.1 & 6.5) is also in the protocol and will be out for Friday's game. PG Fox (20.9 & 5.2 APG) has scored 30 points in each of the Kings' last two games and is joined by guards Hield (15.7) and Haliburton (13.6-4.0-6.8) to form a terrific perimeter trio. SF Barnes (16.5 & 6.1) continues his solid play plus Baylor rookie Mitchell (9.4) has become a regular contributor. PF/C Bagley (8.0 & 7.1) is back healthy and has pulled down 12 rebounds in each of the team's last two games.
With Denver suffering injuries and COVID absences last year's MVP has taken on more and more responsibility. It would be hard for Nikola Jokic (25.7-14.2-7.0) to do more than he did Wednesday night, when he scored 26 points with 21 rebounds and 11 assists in a 115-109 loss to the Utah Jazz. "26, 21 and 11, and you lose," acting Nuggets coach Popeye Jones said after Wednesday's game. "You feel it for him. I think I've said it numerous times since I've been sitting here. Most superstars wouldn't take it. ... He's a special guy." Jokic has had to carry a bigger load with long-term injuries to Jamal Murray (knee) and Michael Porter Jr. (back). Neither is coming back soon, and things became tougher with Aaron Gordon (14.2 & 5.5 playing with a hamstring injury, while Jeff Green and Zeke Nnaji were placed on the health and safety protocol list.
The Kings lost at home to Atlanta on Wednesday night despite Trae Young, John Collins and Bogdan Bogdanovic sitting out. Unfortunately, for those hoping the Kings will finally break their 15-year playoff drought, it's not the only time Sacramento has lost to a team that is missing stars. The Kings have dropped games against the Los Angeles Lakers without LeBron James and Anthony Davis and to Dallas when Luka Doncic was sidelined. Sacramento is the worst defensive team in the league and I see Denver winning "with room to spare!"
Good luck...Larry

Play on: Nuggets -8 -107 at pinnacle
1 Unit FREE PLAY on Denver Nuggets -8
The Denver Nuggets will be hungry for a win tonight after dropping their last two to the Mavericks and Jazz. Now they host the Sacramento Kings, who are 4-10 SU & 5-9 ATS in their last 14 games overall and struggling despite playing 10 of their last 12 games at home. The Kings are 0-5 SU & 0-5 ATS in their last five road games with each of their last four road losses coming by 8 points or more. Sacramento is 6-14 ATS in its last 20 games playing on one day of rest. Denver is 58-32 ATS in its last 90 games off a home loss to a division opponent. Give me the Nuggets.

NBA | Cavs vs Blazers
Play on: Cavs -5½ -110 at Mirage
Dave's Friday Free Play:
1* on Cleveland Cavaliers -5.5
The Key: The Cleveland Cavaliers have had the last 2 days off and should be primed for a big performance against the hapless Portland Trail Blazers tonight. The Blazers remain without their 2 best players in Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum. It's a big reason why the Blazers are just 3-12 SU & 4-11 ATS in their last 15 games overall. They have been especially bad since losing McCollum as Lillard has been in and out of the lineup. The Cavaliers are 25-10-1 ATS in their last 36 games overall. The Blazers are 3-13 ATS in their last 16 games as underdogs. Portland is 2-9 ATS in its last 11 home games. Take Cleveland.

NBA | Cavs vs Blazers
Play on: Cavs -4½ -110 at Mirage
Friday NBA Free play. My selection is on Cleveland minus the points over Portland at 10:10 pm et on Friday.
This is a considerable regression spot for the Blazers considering how they've performed over their last couple of games, without the likes of Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum in the lineup. Last time out they knocked down 15 three-pointers and made 36 trips to the free throw line yet still fell by six points and scored 'only' 109 points in a home loss to the undermanned Heat (we won with Miami in that game). Two games back, Portland upset Atlanta, scoring 135 points in the process. The Blazers face a different challenge here with the Cavs rolling into town, having allowed just 103.3 points per game on the road this season where they've gone a very respectable 10-8 SU. Cleveland has lost five of its last seven games overall including a disappointing four-point loss against the red hot Grizzlies two nights ago. I like the Cavs chances of bouncing back here, noting the Blazers are a woeful 3-13 in an underdog role this season, outscored by an average margin of 13.0 points in that situation. Going back further, they're 15-29 ATS as an underdog of between 3.5 and 9.5 points over the last 2+ seasons, outscored by 9.0 points on average in that spot. Take Cleveland.
