Monday Myths: Do Jockey Changes Make a Difference?

Welcome to a continuing handicapping series for our Monday blog space, “Monday Myths.” Each week I’ll use the power of the Betmix database to take common handicapping assumptions and either support or dispel them with data. Betmix data powers the 1/ST BET app and its features like Angler and Birddog give data-minded horseplayers a treasure trove of information in which to query your own curiosities.

Assumption:

Jockey changes can make a significant difference.

Background:

Jockeys are like Quarterbacks in football – they probably take too much blame for a loss and get too much credit for a win. But you can’t watch a race around a group of people without some comment about the riders pre-race and post-race. So how much impact do they have when a rider change is made from race to race?

Data Points:

I dialed up the Betmix database for all races in 2021 and studied the horses who made a jockey change from their previous race. I measured the jockey change as positive or negative based on bob riders’ win percentages. I looked at various class levels to see if jockey changes meant any more or less with the quality of horses.

Overall Findings:

Horses moving from a higher percentage jockey to a lower percentage jockey won 10.3% with $0.74 ROI.
Horses moving from a lower percentage jockey to a higher percentage jockey won 13.7% with $0.77 ROI.

Maiden claiming horses moving from a higher percentage jockey to a lower percentage jockey won 10.8% with $0.71 ROI.
Maiden claiming horses moving from a lower percentage jockey to a higher percentage jockey won 14.2% with $0.77 ROI.

Maiden special weight horses moving from a higher percentage jockey to a lower percentage jockey won 11.2% with $0.78 ROI.
Maiden special weight horses moving from a lower percentage jockey to a higher percentage jockey won 13.1% with $0.69 ROI.

Claiming horses moving from a higher percentage jockey to a lower percentage jockey won 11.1% with $0.75 ROI.
Claiming moving from a lower percentage jockey to a higher percentage jockey won 14.1% with $0.80 ROI.

Allowance moving from a higher percentage jockey to a lower percentage jockey won 10.9% with $0.67 ROI.
Allowance moving from a lower percentage jockey to a higher percentage jockey won 13.9% with $0.72 ROI.

Stakes horses moving from a higher percentage jockey to a lower percentage jockey won 9.1% with $0.66 ROI.
Stakes horses moving from a lower percentage jockey to a higher percentage jockey won 12.9% with $0.77 ROI.

Overall Findings:

At each class level and overall, horses going from a lower to higher percentage jockey increased their chances of victory by about 3% overall in strike rate. The findings and gap between the positive and negative jockey changes remained very consistent across the various class levels. And even though the presence of a better jockey would by assumption keep the price down on the return bid, the overall ROI for this positive jockey move still rates better than a step down in jockey in terms of value.

Bottom line:

Horses making a positive rider change aren’t automatic bets, but they’re certainly better bets than those that are going from a higher percentage jockey to a lower one. Overall, it’s safe to say a jockey change can make a statistical difference. You can go into Betmix and run your own queries for a deeper dive into this theory and any that you can create. For instance, check which trainers are more potent when changing jockeys or which tracks these kinds of moves are more or less successful.

Best Horse Racing Bets for Tuesday, January 11, 2022

The biggest surprise for me when I reviewed Mahoning Valley Race Course, Parx Racing, and Sunland Park Racetrack for my Tuesday horseracing picks was how often I found myself in agreement with the morning line. So much so, in fact, that Mahoning Valley was the only track where underdogs outnumbered favorites among my choices.

Tuesday Picks for Mahoning Valley Race Course

We’re starting with race four, a one-mile allowance race on the dirt track for Ohio-bred three-year-old’s and upward. I’m betting on the second-favored (at 7/2) I’mma Natural, ridden by Fernando Salazar Becerra.

This four-year-old gelding is a standout in this seven-horse field, finishing in the money eight of his 17 career starts, winning one. Since his maiden victory, he’s finished second in five allowance races. Yeah, he’s due.

Now in his second decade in the business, Craig Sweeting trains I’mma Natural for owner Melissa S. Edgington.

Race five is a one-mile claiming race on the dirt track for Ohio-bred three-year-old’s and upward. I’m in agreement with the morning line on this race: Bet on the 3/1 favorite, Reanimate, with veteran jockey T.D. Houghton in the irons.
This nine-year-old gelding has proven himself time and again at the journeyman level of racing, finishing in the money 37 of his 58 career starts, winning 15. That might not put him in the starting gate at Churchill Downs on Derby Day, but it’s enough to give him a huge statistical lead in this nine-horse field.

Twenty-year horseracing veteran Raquel A. Castro trains Reanimate for owner Barbara Madrigal.

Race seven is a six-furlong claiming race on the main track for Ohio-bred three-year-old’s and upward that have never won two races. My money’s on the 3/1 second-favored Ohio Cause, with Alex Gonzalez aboard.

This four-year-old gelding moneyed four of his 13 career starts, winning one. His brief history shows steady improvement, and that should help him succeed in this unimpressive field of nine.

Jake S. Radosevich trains Ohio Cause for his own JSR Stables, Inc. Radosevich has put Gonzalez in the irons for Ohio Cause’s last two races, resulting in two second-place finishes.

Incidentally, the morning line has three of the entries in this race at 20/1, and while I like a value show bet as much as the next guy, none of the three is worth the wager.
My Tuesday Picks for Parx Racing

Let’s start on the main track with race seven, 1-1/16 miles claiming run for four-year-old’s and upward. I like the 3/1 morning line favorite, Factor This In, piloted by top jockey Frankie Pennington.

This eight-year-old gelding moneyed 27 of his 50 career starts, winning 13. In this nine-horse field, he’s got a solid statistical advantage.

Ranked third in North America for wins in 2021, Jamie Ness trains Factor This In for owner Yo Berbs. Pennington was in the irons for Factor This In’s two most recent victories.

Race eight is a six-furlong starter allowance race for four-year-old’s and upward. I’ve got to back the 2/1 morning-line favorite, American Unity, ridden by Frankie Pennington.

This four-year-old colt finished in the money seven of his nine career starts, winning three, including his two most recent claiming races at Parx. Versus the rest of this seven-horse field, he’ll do just fine.

For race nine—a one-mile starter allowance race on the main track for four-year-old’s and upward—I’m buying a win ticket on the second-favored (at 7/2) Shooger Ray Too, ridden by veteran jockey Jorge A. Vargas Jr.
With only limited success at the stakes level, this five-year-old gelding finished nine of his 12 career starts in the money, winning three. Most notably, he finished third in the Stud Muffin Stakes at Aqueduct last March and second in the Birdstone Stakes (Listed) at Saratoga in August.

He was an also-ran in two other stakes races, placing sixth in the Greenwood Cup Stakes (Grade III) at Parx in September and ninth in the Queens County Stakes (Listed) at Aqueduct in December.

Tuesday’s Picks for Sunland Park Racetrack

We’re starting on the main track with race three, a one-mile starter optional claiming race for four-year-old’s and upward. I’m betting my two dollars on the second-favored (at 2/1) Southern Summer, with Alfredo J. Juarez Jr. in the irons.

This four-year-old gelding has the best of it in this short field of six, with nine money finishes in 14 career starts, three of those wins. Even more encouraging, he’s moneyed his last five races, winning two.

Casey T. Lambert trains Southern Summer for Champion Racing Stable.

Race six is a one-mile claiming race on the dirt track for New Mexico-bred four-year-old’s and upward that have never won two races. I’m betting on the 2/1 morning-line favorite, Elliot, with Luis A. Fuentes in the irons.
Elliot, a five-year-old gelding, is the statistical star of this seven-horse field, with five money finishes in 12 career starts, one of those a win. He moneyed his most recent three allowance races at Zia, and he looks to be a shoo-in for this race.

Regularly ranked in the top 100 trainers since 2009, Joel H. Marr trains Elliot for owners Teresa K. Marr, Tracy Haymes, and Todd Beedy. Marr tapped Fuentes to saddle Elliot for his last two races.

Race eight is a six-furlong allowance race for New Mexico-bred fillies and mares four years old and upward that have never won two races. I like the 5/2 morning-line favorite here– Atill I Chime, piloted by Alfredo J. Juarez Jr.

This four-year-old filly has the edge in this nine-horse field, with six money finishes in nine career starts, one of those a win. She notably finished second in the Rio Grande Senorita Thoroughbred Futurity (Black Type) at Ruidoso Downs in 2020.

There are 7 competitive races scheduled at both tracks, with the Class 3 handicap chase at Exeter at 3.05pm sure to attract some interesting runners from the top yards. All-weather fans can study the twilight card at Southwell, with the first race under lights at 4pm and the new surface now fully settled in.

#3 Reid's Fangirl She'll need better than she has shown so far, but she's getting in with the locals for the first time after a string of pretty good tries to open her career. She'll race with Lasix for the first time and should offer a decent mid-range price.
#4 Misty Mauve She'll get Lasix for this after a really good debut run here last month, but the top choice seemingly has a tactical edge on here, and that might make the difference. Capable at a short price.
#8 Eighty Eight Keys Dropper was overmatched in stakes company last time out but actually cashed a small check while adding blinkers, and maybe she can land a small piece of this at a price.
Race Summary Reid's Fangirl looks the part here while protected on the rise off the claim, and most of those who have raced in here have not shown a ton of pace. She might be able to shake free turning for home.

Parx Racing - Race #9
Picks Notes
#4 Fast Bob He might be able to land the right kind of trip from just off the splits, and he has been competitive when racing with this kind in recent starts. He should be a decent number, too.
#3 Olympic Romp He's a really reliable finisher who should be a good fit here after Ness claimed this guy in Kentucky. Mild worry that he won't get enough pace, but his form might be just a touch too good here.
#2 Shooger Ray Too He'll get some needed class relief after a trio of stakes tries, and he has been decent at these shorter trips in the past. Think he'll probably be a bit of an underlay with these.
Race Summary Fast Bob might get a bit overlooked in here after string of underneath finishes, but he should be able to land a pretty good run while tracking a little pace coming from the outside.

Parx Racing - Race #0
Picks Notes
#2 Late to the Show He went pretty evenly in the debut try with special weight company, and he drops into this more reasonable spot at second asking. Thinking he won't have to come forward too much to land this.
#3 Kodapendent He's the clear one to beat while dropping in for the first time, but he doesn't always bring a huge effort, so he might be beatable at a short kind of price.
#5 Will Take Control He comes right back at the same level off the claim, and he has shown enough tactical route pace to think he can keep in touch early with this group at 7f.
Race Summary Late to the Show ran a decent race in his career debut, and that kind of try is pretty much in line with what the likely chalk, Kodapendent, brings in some of his races. A small move forward would make 'Show pretty tough here.

Action Potential showed 3rd for a $15,400 purse on July 13. That was a nice effort after finishing 6th for a $90,000 purse. The drop in grade helped put Action Potential on competitive footing.

Ali Alley should put together a big run from the outside. The No. 7 should have a good time from the outside.

The filly showed 3rd on August 3 in her debut. As a first-time runner, Ali Alley was 3rd for a $30,000 race. That was a decent performance for the experienced filly that was previously bought at auction for $260,000 in April

After one race, Ali Alley was sold at auction for $45,000. How’s that for a big gamble and loss? In any case, running at this level should be good for her prospects.

Look for Ali Alley to have a big chance of getting Race 5 done with a win.

Canelo Bok could be in for a minor upset over Fast Dashin Rocket. He is a one-time winner in 11 races as well. Canelo Bok came close in his last attempt.

On November 18 at Evangeline, Canelo Bok placed 2nd behind Gml Holy Water by a head for a $6,000 purse. It was a solid time, clocked at 17.042 seconds at 330 yards.

The class drop served him well and all the way down to $3,800, he has to be considered a contender. For the better value, Canelo Bok over Fast Dashin Rocket looks good.

Colorado is off a much tighter than expected 4-3 win at home over Seattle just last night and I believe it'll be fatigued here in the 2nd game of the B2B. Nashville on the other hand has been off for two nights after a 4-2 win at Arizona in its most recent action. In fact, the Preds enter playing their best hockey of the season after four straight victories. Nashville scored the 5-2 win over Colorado on December 16th and I believe it has much more than a "puncher's chance" to do the same again here at home tonight. Consider the Predators.

When Alabama meets Auburn on the football field, it's called "The Iron Bowl." It's the South's greatest rivalry and among the best in college football history. However, when the two bitter rivals meet in college hoops, it's not quite the same. However, as the fourth-ranked Auburn Tigers (14-1, 3-0 SEC) and the 24th-ranked Crimson Tide (11-4, 2-1) meet tonight in Tuscaloosa, it marks the first time in almost 35 years that the rivals have played each other as AP top-25 teams. To be exact, the last time it occurred was when No. 13 Alabama hosted and beat No. 17 Auburn 88-82 on Jan 22, 1987.
Bruce Pearl made a HUGE 'splash' when took over at Tennessee for the 2005-06 season. He would go 145-61 (.704) with the Vols, leading them to NCAA berths in each of his six seasons in Knoxville, including two Sweet 16s and an Elite 8. However, he was let go and was given a three-year ban for allegations surrounding lying to NCAA investigators. He returned to the SEC with Auburn in 2014-15 and after going just 26-40 in his first two seasons, led the Tigers to 26-wins, 30 wins (Final 4 appearance) and 25 wins (NCAA tourney was canceled because of COVID). However, the Tigers suffered a 'meltdown' on the court last season, going just 13-14. The Tigers have turned things around with the help of FOUR freshmen. The 6-10 Smith leads in scoring with 15.5 PPG (adds 6.4 RPG), while the 7-0 Kessler leads in rebounding (7.7), while adding 9.9 PPG. Johnson (12.8) is a starting guard, while Green (12.7) comes off the bench. Other contributors are 6-6 guard Cambridge (7.3), fellow 6-6 guard Jasper (5.6 & 3.1 APG) and 6-8 forward Williams (7.4).
Nate Oats spent four years at Buffalo and went 59-13 in his last two, making the Big Dance each time. That allowed him the opportunity to come to Alabama and after a 16-15 first season (COVID) he led the Tide to a 26-7 record and a Sweet 16 appearance last year. Gone from that team are the 6-7 Jones (11.2 & 6.6), who was not only the SEC player-of-the-year but also the league's Defensive POY. Also gone is veteran guard Petty (12.6 & 5.2). However, the Tide have plenty of talent left. Note that Alabama did return its top-two scorers from last season and guards Shackelford and Quinerly are again leading the way. Shackelford checks in at 16.3 & 5.9 and Quinerly at 15.5 & 4.3 APG. Swingman Ellis adds 12.2 & 6.2 plus freshman center Bediako (6.8 & 4.5) is starting. Guard Davison (8.3-4.9-4.3), the 6-6 Miles (6.6) and the 6-8 Gurley (7.3 & 3.7) are all contributors.
Auburn opened 3-0 but lost 115-109 (in 2 OTs) to UConn in the Battle 4 Atlantis. However, the Tigers have won 11 in a row since, going 9-2 ATS. The highlight of Alabama's season was its 91-82 upset of then-No. 3 Gonzaga on Dec 4 in Seattle. The Tide's very next game was an 83-82 win over Houston, but the team hasn't been quite the same since. After opening 7-1 SU (6-2 ATS), Alabama has gone 4-3 SU and a money-burning 1-6 ATS. Alabama is averaging 82.5 PPG (15th) but is allowing 74.0 PPG (300th). That said, the arrival of No. 4 Auburn (on an 11-game winning streak) should be all the motivation the Tide will need for a HUGE effort in this game.
The Crimson Tide have won 10 of the last 12 games in Tuscaloosa vs the Tigers dating back to a 73-61 triumph on March 6, 2010, plus Alabama owns a 17-game home winning streak that began back on Dec 22, 2020, with an 85-69 win over East Tennessee. The football team came up short last night vs Georgia but the Crimson Tide 'roll' here on the hardwood vs the hated-Tigers.

They are coming off a 71-68 home win over Kansas State, which at first glance looks less than impressive. They were playing for just the second time in 2022, and they came out flat in the first half before rallying in the final 20 minutes to erase a 13 point deficit. The Cowboys have failed to cover in six of their last seven overall, and this looks like a tough spot for OK State.

I got no problem laying a mere 2.5-points at home with No. 24 Alabama as they host No. 4 Auburn in a big SEC showdown. As good as the Tigers have been to start out the 2021-22 season, they are getting a little too much respect in this one.
Auburn is 14-1 with a 6-1 record away from home, but only three of those road games have been true away games. They also haven't come against the stiffest of competition, as they have played USF, St. Louis and South Carolina. They did whoop up on a bad Gamecocks team, but they only won by 4 at St Louis and by just 6 at USF.
Alabama is 11-4, but have not lost on their home floor this season. The Crimson Tide are 7-0 at the Coleman Coliseum
Alabama is also 9-2 ATS last 11 off a loss by 6 or more and 15-5 ATS last 20 vs a top caliber team that is outscoring opponents by 12 or more points/game. Give me the Crimson Tide -2.5!
