Rocket Picks : Keeneland, Oaklawn Park, and Aqueduct for April 24, 2022
By: Aaron Halterman

A great week of racing continues today with solid action from around the country. For the free pick 4, we will head to Keeneland for the late sequence on the card. We will also have full card selections for Oaklawn Park and Aqueduct for the paid Rockets, so be sure to check those out. Let’s go!

Below is our free Late Pick 4 for Keeneland:

Keeneland April 24, 2022

Race 6: Allowance

#2 Fire On Time will drop down to the claiming ranks for the first time in this spot. Her speed figures stand out amongst this group, while she defeated allowance company two starts back. #1 Myeerah will move back to the dirt for this race, which seems to be her best surface.

Race 7: Ben Ali Stakes (G3)
freestar

#8 Seven Scents has been consistent at this level at Fair Grounds in his last two starts, finishing a close fourth in both races. This spot may be a bit easier today. #6 Turned Aside is a long shot with a solid shot, who drops down in class for this one after taking on tough stakes company all of last year.

Race 8: Elkhorn Stakes (G3)

#2 Exact Estimate debuts today for Chad Brown, who is having another solid Keeneland meet. Prat jumps aboard, which is a good sign. #3 Kingmaker comes in from Oaklawn Park after a couple of nice efforts. It is a good sign that he gets Luis Saez up for the ride today.

Race 9: Allowance Optional Claiming

#9 Abscond was close last time against stakes company and always seems to show up with a consistent effort. Look for more of the same out of her today. #6 Lashara runs second off of the layoff in this spot, which should lead to an improved effort. Prat jumps aboard, which is a great sign.

THE TICKET

$.50 Pick 4 (Races 6-9) 1,2,3,7 / 1,6,7,8,10 / 2,3 / 6,9 – $40

Keeneland Picks: Rosario and a price play on April 24
By J.N. Campbell

Keeneland Picks - Sunday, April 23, 2022

Race 1: 7-3-5-2
Race 2: 11-7-6-2
Race 3: 4-2-6-8
Race 4: 8-4-5-7
Race 5: 3-8-9-1
Race 6: 7-3-2-6
Race 7: 9-2-7-12
Race 8: 2-11-3-4
Race 9: 6-9-2-5
**Most Likely: Exulting #8 (Race 4)**
**Best Value: Fair Game #3 (Race 5)**

Most Likely Winner: (Race 4: Exulting #8, 9/5):

Owned by Michael Hui and trained by a guy named Maker, this gelding by Tapit has all of the skills to get the job done in this Starter. Running at Oaklawn Park, he comes to Keeneland with high hopes. If he is running at his best, then he should win against this crowd. I realize he has his moments, but Maker prepares them well, and this standard bearer is classy. The services of Tyler Gaffalione only make the argument stronger.

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #8

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 5: Fair Game #3, 8/1):

Bred and owned by Watts Humphrey, this promising filly has some inviting lines that were forged at Tampa by Vicky Oliver. A daughter of Honor Code, she has a pair of consecutive wins to her credit. I like her late running ability, and she should be ready for this class jump. Rafael Bejarano still has some of the turf riding magic that he exhibited a few years back in SoCal. The dam side is strong in turf too, and I like the price on this one. Do not count out the Oliver Barn!

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #3 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 7: Turf, 5

Race 4: #9 Sparky Star, #4 Erimo, #10 Star Contact, #12 Casa Legend

Race 5: #1 Beauty Joy, #5 Beluga, #3 Savaquin, #2 My Sugar

Race 9: #9 Cheerful Days, #7 Savvy Nine, #1 Russian Emperor, #8 Romantic Warrior

Race 10: #14 Millennium Falcon, #2 Beauty Live, #7 Golden Empire, #9 Dragon Fortune

Race 11: #11 Lucky With You, #4 Cordyceps Six, #2 Trillion Win, #3 Blaze Warrior

Race 1: Oriental Express Handicap

#10 Double Show turned his form around to finish a fast-closing sixth last start. Additional improvement has him figuring prominently in this contest. #1 Rhapsody is racing well. He’s looking to go one better after his competitive second last time out. He only needs to offset the wide gate to be a factor here, especially as a two-time winner in this grade. #9 Brave Dreams has hit the ground running across four starts in Hong Kong. He has the ability. #8 Sight Hero has been unlucky at times this term. Still, he rarely runs poorly and draws favourably.

Race 2: Sacred Kingdom Handicap

#1 Fun N Glory is after back-to-back wins. He won with authority last start and his pairing with Zac Purton commands respect. He appears capable of winning his way into Class 3. #4 Leslie looks to have his fair share of ability. Joao Moreira hops up and from gate four he gets his opportunity. #10 One Voice steps out on debut in Hong Kong. He caught the eye in his latest trial and appears forward enough to figure first-up in town. #7 Woodfire Bro charged into second on debut. Expect he takes another step forward here.

Race 3: River Dancer Handicap

#3 Golden Link doesn’t know to run a bad race. He’s a one-time winner this term who can find himself in the right spot from the draw. #5 Leading Fortune knocked up a hat-trick of wins earlier this term. He’s since held his condition and is armed with Zac Purton in a bid to recapture his winning groove after finishing third last out. #8 Precise Express scored handily last start. He got his win and looks favoured once more to contend strongly. #4 Royal Bomb is looking to snap consecutive runner-up efforts. He’s a threat.

Race 4: Able One Handicap

#9 Sparky Star is still without a win. He’s gone close several times and once again, he rates as a leading contender, especially with Zac Purton taking the reins. #4 Erimo has done well across two starts in Hong Kong, finishing second in each outing. He only needs to offset the wide gate to be a factor. #10 Star Contact has shown ability. He can bounce back after a lacklustre effort last start. #12 Casa Legend is coming to hand in Hong Kong. He’s closing in on a first win.

Race 5: Bullish Luck Handicap

#1 Beauty Joy has found his feet this campaign, twice winning from four runs – both times with Zac Purton up. Expect he rolls forward and gives this group something to run down. #5 Beluga has both the class and winning experience. He’s always a threat over this course and distance, especially after his win two starts ago. #3 Savaquin is nothing short of consistent. He’s chasing an overdue win after finishing second three times this term by very, very short margins. #2 My Sugar is consistent but does have a few soundness issues at times. Still, don’t discount.

Race 6: G1 Chairman’s Sprint Prize

#2 Wellington is easily the classiest sprinter in Hong Kong and he can assert his dominance here. He still had plenty left up his sleeve when winning last start and any improvement off that run has him taking this contest out for the second time after prevailing last year. #8 Master Eight is swiftly rising. He’s nothing short of an impressive youngster who does appear capable of figuring. #5 Hot King Prawn is getting on in age but even still, he’s put together a few solid efforts this term. Next best. #1 Sky Field will rattle home for Blake Shinn. Don’t discount, especially for trainer Caspar Fownes who is pleased where the chestnut is currently at.

Race 7: Fairy King Prawn Handicap

#2 California Concord is consistent in his spot. He gets a handy three pounds taken off with Jerry Chau’s claim who should get the run of the race. #3 Nicconi County won well on debut at Happy Valley. He needs to translate that form to the big track which will be tough but even still, he looks like a rising talent who can figure again. #9 Kumasi has his fair share of ability. He’s coming to hand slowly but with a clean run he shapes as a threat to this group’s aspirations. #8 Solid Impact is better than his record suggests. He can bounce out of the ground at any time.

Race 8: G1 FWD Champions Mile

#1 Golden Sixty was back to his imperious best last start and he should be able to despatch this field with relative ease. He has the class, the record and the ability to win back-to-back editions the FWD Champions Mile. #8 California Spangle arrives as the unknown to Hong Kong’s champion. He has a stack of speed and should run this group along from the front and, take a power of running down. #3 Waikuku can bounce back. He draws well and with a smooth run gets his chance to fight out the finish. #2 More Than This finished second in this race last year. He has claims.

Race 9: G1 FWD QEII Cup

The blinkers have come off #9 Cheerful Days who steps up to 10 furlongs for the first time across his career. He’s enjoyed a remarkable ascent this season and although this is difficult, he just might be worth taking a chance on here. He can relax throughout and have the last crack at this bunch after a luckless run earlier this month. #7 Savvy Nine can do no wrong at the minute. He’s the in-form horse who will relish getting back up in trip this weekend. #1 Russian Emperor steps out after he was found to be lame last start. He’s since overcome that issue and his best holds him in good stead. #8 Romantic Warrior steps up in grade after winning the BMW Hong Kong Derby. He’s the standout four-year-old from his crop who looks well placed to figure here.

Race 10: Vengeance Of Rain Handicap

#14 Millennium Falcon is racing well as a two-time winner now this campaign. He slots in light and gets his chance to upstage this group. #2 Beauty Live is enjoying a remarkable rise. He gets his shot again but gate 14 does make this tricky once more, even as a three-time winner from the last four starts. #7 Golden Empire is chasing a hat-trick of wins. He made his Class 3 debut a winning one last start. Expect another big effort. #9 Dragon Fortune mixes his form but his best is capable here. Don’t discount.

Race 11: Silent Witness Handicap

#11 Lucky With You steps out after failing to make an impact last time out from the wide gate. He slots in light and can bounce back from a better draw. Expect he rolls forward and tries to pinch this from there. #4 Cordyceps Six is a four-time winner this term. Blake Shinn hops aboard him again and he remains in Class 3 following his sublime effort last start. #2 Trillion Win has made his way to a triple-figure rating. Still, he has claims here as long as he can offset the awkward draw. #3 Blaze Warrior went bang last start with a win after struggling over further earlier this term. He can make his presence felt again for Joao Moreira.

Aqueduct Horses in Focus for Sunday, April 24
Posted on April 23, 2022 by David Aragona

RACE 6: EUCHARIST (#5)

Low-level claimers don’t get much more consistent than #3 Mr. Pete. This horse has finished in the money in his last 8 starts, and even more remarkably has earned a set of speed figures that are all within about a 5-point range. He’s making his first start off the claim for John Toscano here, but he hasn’t been phased by switching stables recently. I’m just concerned that there are horses in here with a higher ceiling than him, even if they may be less trustworthy. #1 Musical America is a wild card as he drops in class again and switches into the Rob Atras barn. This clearly wasn’t a good claim by Michael Dubb, as this 8-year-old’s form has completely fallen apart since getting picked up for $32k. However, his last race wasn’t as bad as it might seem, since he found himself chasing a runoff leader through unreasonable early fractions. The slight cutback shouldn’t bother him and he may be the speed from the rail. I’d use him, but I prefer #5 Eucharist. This horse made his first start off the claim for Ray Handal last time and showed subtle improvement despite finishing fourth, beaten by double-digit lengths. He was contesting an honest pace that day and was simply no match for three superior runners who crossed the wire ahead of him. Winner Crypto Cash and third-place finisher American Rule both came back to win out of that spot with strong efforts. I like the slight turnback for Eucharist and this is certainly a drop in class.

RACE 7: TACO BEAN (#8)

The connections did not shy away from trying #3 Who Hoo That’s Me in some tough spots last year. After breaking his maiden going today’s distance, he gave a very nice account of himself in the Sleepy Hollow, checking in third behind the talented Shipsational. I won’t be too hard on him for the Remsen regression, given the step up in company and trip. Jorge Abreu does not have strong numbers off layoffs, and is just 2 for 20 (10%, $1.10 ROI) off 90-180 day layoffs on dirt over 5 years. Yet this horse is coming back in a logical spot and obviously will be a handful if he merely holds his form from last year. Some of his main rivals are also 3-year-olds. However, I’m not quite as enamored with #1 Hot Rod Rumble or #2 Bourbon’s Hope. The former took many tries to break his maiden and finally did so with a lucky headbob last time. He may be the speed from the inside, but the track wasn’t as favorable to inside paths on Saturday’s card. Bourbon’s Hope was beaten by a pretty good rival last time, but this is a deeper field from top to bottom. A couple of runners exit the April 1 race at this level won by Masked Marauder. That heat came up unusually fast, I think this is a softer spot. #4 Lookin for Trouble set the pace before fading, but he was glued to the rail, which might not have been the place to be. He can bounce back, though isn’t the most appealing win candidate. My top pick at a bigger price is #8 Taco Bean, who finished just ahead of Lookin for Trouble in that April 1 affair with a similar forwardly placed trip. I’m not sure what changed for this gelding towards the end of last year, but he’s grown up into a decent racehorse after a dismal start to his career. He’s now put forth three straight respectable efforts at this level. He also showed a new dimension when closing from off the pace to get up for third two back. He rarely gets much respect due to the low-profile connections, but he’s far from impossible here if the favorite isn’t quite ready off the layoff.

RACE 9: BARREL OF QUESTS (#12)

I’m not wildly against either favorite in this state-bred maiden special weight event that closes out the card, but I also don’t want to default to either at a short price. #10 Highgate Road is probably the horse to beat as he drops out of a solid try against open company in his career debut at Tampa Bay Downs. He faced a solid field that day and earned a respectable 93 TimeformUS Speed Figure for the performance. The problem is that he’s going to be a short price getting a rider upgrade to Jose Ortiz, and these runners don’t always translate their form coming to New York. Catherine Day-Phillips is also 0 for 13 with maiden second time starters on turf over the past 5 years, with just one hitting the board. #1 Mr. Connecticut appears to be his main rival as the other short price in this affair. He ran well in all of his starts last year. He looked like he needed a race when fourth in a solid maiden event on debut, and then just missed second time out. He finished off the board as the favorite in his 2021 finale, but he was essentially blocked for the entire stretch drive. He’s better than that, but Christophe Clement doesn’t have particularly strong statistics off layoffs. I don’t see that much speed in this race, so I want to lean in another direction towards a runner who should be forwardly placed. #12 Barrel Quests is a horse that I’ve been waiting to see back on turf. This colt made just one start on turf last year in his career debut, and he didn’t run nearly as poorly as it may seem. He got a little rank heading into the first turn and then raced 3-wide without cover before fading late. He got some time off after that and has returned with some improved efforts on dirt. He actually made a nice middle move going a mile in his return, and then last time showed improved early speed in the slop before settling for second. I think he’s getting back on the right surface as a son of turf winner Barrel of Joy, who has already produced 2 multiple turf winners. He also could play out as the controlling speed if ridden as aggressively as last time.

Al Cimaglia: Cal Expo Pick 5 Analysis

April 24, 2022 | By Al Cimaglia

Tonight, Cal Expo has 9-races ready to roll with the 0.20 Pick 4 starting in Race 6. That sequence has a $25,000 guaranteed pool with a 16% takeout. The card begins with the 0.20 Pick 5 which also has a 16% takeout. The pools have been good for this sequence, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 1

2-Urgointohearmeroar (5-1)-Has been starting slowly and took the long way around in last. Did pace home in 56.1 but couldn't hit the board. Beaten chalk may reward backers this time at a better price.
4-Hay Hay Alright (2-1)-Has cashed checks versus better but not loving the short price morning line. Will respect but needs a good steer to come out on top.
6-Marced Magic (5/2)-Faded down the lane last week after being driven aggressively to get on the engine which isn't the usual plan. Svendsen sticks on this beaten odds-on chalk and will look for a big try.

Race 2

2-Brooklynsville (4-1)-Sophomore filly makes its 4th start for the Roland barn. Has shown some ability to pass down the lane and this might be the time for more assertive handling.
4-Datsyukian Deke (9/5)-Was used early on from the 7-hole and faded down the lane. Stewart might be able to work a smooth trip in the 2nd start of the season.

Race 3

5-Allmyx'sliventexas (6/5)-Won last week versus the NW4000-L5. That was the 3rd consecutive win when dropped to that class and is back in versus the same tonight.

Race 4

3-Gunny Wilson (7/5)-Wilson is 0-56 at CalX but he should top the two trotters and the 5/6. Recent form has been better than most in here so will use in case the one below finds a way to lose.
4-Native's Best Bet (6/5)-Not sure anyone deserves to be 6/5 in this field, but this looks like the one to beat. Kennedy should get into striking range and come off cover down the lane.

Race 5

6-Some Playa (8-1)-Will look for a price and Plano has some the gate speed to get a close-up seat. Could get sucked around and surprise.
7-Impressive Art (2-1)-Doesn't win often but will overlook the 1-16 record this year because this is a soft spot. Has raced well in 4 of the last 6 and should have his way with this group if the trip is smooth.

0.20 Pick 5

2,4,6/2,4/5/3,4/6,7
Total Bet=$4.80

Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks Keeneland - Race #7

Picks
Notes

#5 Bullseye Beauty
She made a middle move and flattened when last seen at Turfway, but she brings some pretty sneaky good back turf form to this one, and she might get a decent tactical trip behind a few players who want to flash pace but are unlikely to stick around late. Chance with the boys.

#8 Seven Scents
He is a pretty reliable type who tends to get good trips tracking the pace, but he also tends to be very one-paced in the lane in some of his starts, leading him to settle for shares. Would want something better than the 4/1 ML price.

#2 Maven
Tough read here for me, as the best stuff would certainly do, but he seemingly has to go from the fence with a few potential pace players lined up further outside. Seems all or nothing today with the expected trip.

Race Summary
This one brings us a very rare 'high' Betmix Lonshot Score of 51, so it might be worth poking around for some prices. Bullseye Beauty is a good fit today with the boys, and she has run well in both local starts with the boys. Look for her late.

#6 Thought
There are a few interesting players among those who have run, but few of them have shown much interest in finishing late, so I'll look for a fresh face. This one goes first out for a capable barn, and this 7f trip might suit him perfectly for the first trip to post.

#11 Guest Speaker
He finished with a little bit of energy in the comeback race at Fair Grounds, and he presumably has some upside in this second start off the bench. Capable team sends out one of the more likely winners.

#7 Anarchist
He caught a nice winner in the debut at Tampa, and he probably doesn't have to come forward much off that effort to stay in the frame with these. Logical win candidate.

Race Summary
Thought debuts in a race that seems kind of there for the taking, and maybe the Asmussen barn can land one like this near the end of the meet.

Keeneland - Race #9

Notes

#9 Abscond
She has just enough pace to avoid winding up with too much to do late, and it seems like her general baseline effort may likely prove too good for this bunch. Class relief gets her home today.

#4 Urban Fairytale
She's the most appealing alternative to the top choice who will get bet, as she's going to get a good trip while tracking the pace, and she has run well here in the past. May be just a bit more likely underneath today.

#6 Lashara
Not much to write home about in the most recent running lines, but maybe she can find a better effort with the Gulfstream comeback out of the way. A tighter try today would put her in the mix at a decent number.

Race Summary
Abscond has been in with some tough customers over the last year, and she drops in to find a group she figures to handle from off the pace. Urban Fairytale and Lashara are interesting price alternatives if you want to pass on the top choice.
