3rd race [Alw 50000s, 6F] – (2) Manolito returns from a September layoff when he was very competitive at this level. Trainer has excellent stats with long layoffs. (3) Brilliant Brooks won for $20,000 after a long layoff and was claimed. New trainer De Paz tried an Aqueduct stakes race and now seeks a spot where the horse was successful in the past. (6) Magnificent Chrome was third in a similar spot last month leaving that same stake mentioned above. (5) Jake Rocks has been competitive at this level recently.
4th race [NY, Md 25000, 6F] – (3) Merger of Equals debuted in a turf maiden special weight where he ran third for a while and now drops down to a much softer spot. (2) Exact Change was third against open company at Aqueduct following a five month layoff. (1) Mrs Bell debuted at this level in March where she set the pace and finished second. Last time, she tried a maiden special weight at Finger Lakes. (4) Lindsay’s Laugh will make her first start for Rudy Rodriguez.
6th race [NY, Md 25000, 6F] – (2) Crosstown Girl has moved from Laurel Park to the barn of Bill Morey who has good numbers with his new horses. This will be his first start against NY-breds. (1) Draw Off will make his third start off a layoff. Last time he tried the turf after running third at today’s level. (5) Eudaimonia was second at this level last month. (6) Dulce Gigante will debut for Bruce Levine who has been having his first-timers ready to run.
8th race [NY, Alw 80000 N1X, 7F] – (2) Key Point has two career starts with a debut victory at Saratoga last summer and then a narrow loss in an allowance last month for Chad Brown. (7) Montebello was last seen running in a stake in California for Bob Baffert. He is now in the barn of John Terranova. He won a maiden at Del Mar last summer and then was second in a Saratoga stake for NY-breds. (5) Colormepazzi exits a series of open company starter allowances. Back in the summer he ran second in a state-bred allowance. (6) Win for Gold was a debut winner beating a horse that is now a stakes winner.

1st race – (8) Jeremy’s Jet put in a quick gate work for his debut and may lead throughout from the outside post. (2) Sergeant Countzler was third in his debut and should be the main threat. (3) Drew’s Gold is another firster who is working fast for his debut. (6) Top of My Game was also third last time and should be in the picture. Betting strategy: 8 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-6-8.
3rd race – (1) Drena’s Star returns to a claimer and should prove best in this field. (5) Impressed is back from a layoff and is worth a look here. (6) Quick Return drops off a neck win and cannot be dismissed here. (4) Soaring Bird should fit in well with this field. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-5. REMEMBEROLDTYMES - A wise man taught me to play the lone speed horse. Take a look at this horse. It looks like Hoyte had to come to know this filly on Apr 30th when riding her for the initial time. Back on again today. This filly notched a strong speed fig of 58 in her last contest. That speed fig should be good enough to win this time around.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 VENENOSA (ML=3/1), #3 TALLY ROAD (ML=4/1), #5 VERMONT HOLIDAY (ML=6/1),

VENENOSA - Finished fourth on April 24th after the very long layoff. Doubtful if there will be improvement in this affair. No accomplishments for this questionable contender in a sprint contest over the last two months tells me that this filly is in a thorny spot TALLY ROAD - This filly hasn't had any recent favorable outcomes in short distance events. Tough to bet on her in this event. VERMONT HOLIDAY - 6/1 is not pegged at the proper price for any horse in a sprint of 7 furlongs that hasn't hit the board in a short distance contest recently. This filly hasn't been showing me anything positive in the last couple of outings.

I've got to go with DIRECT ORDER. Franco has been hot the last month, winning at a nifty 18 percent rate. Had one of the strongest Equibase Speed Figures of this group of horses in his last race. He ought to be given a shot given the formidable speed figures. CROATIAN - His 89 average has this gelding with among the best speed figures for this event. Had one of the most competitive Equibase Speed Figures of this group in his last affair. JOYCEE HAZ PIZZAZ - Will probably compete strongly in the early speed battle which bodes well with this group of horses.

Looking for a nice winner, I think Rob Atras’ gelding by Flatter fits the bill. Sadly, this one’s sire passed away just a few days ago, and we mourn the loss of such a great champion. This offspring of his should be able to handle the class and the distance. Kendrick Carmouche gets the call, and I still think this 6-yr-old has gas left in the tank. He has late speed, and if he can get into the proper position by the top of the lane … with some stiff fractions to run into … then the day should be his. If he is 7/2 come post time, then it is time for a big bet.

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 7: Cucina #4, 5/1):

When Mike Maker and Kendrick Carmouche get together, they can form quite a jockey-trainer combo … that happens in this OC62.5kn2x. The Kentucky-based trainer does not always get the respect that he deserves at NYRA courses, so when I see a shipper like this gelding by Northern Afleet, I want to get on board. He has the class rating to do battle with a group like this one, and his work tab looks solid for a barn that can get hot … and stay hot. I think his price might drift up from 5/1, and that would suit me just fine.

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 8: Dirt, 7F, ALLW80kn1x, 3+ NY Breds):

The “feature” on this Thursday card pits New York breds against one another. A quick thumb-through the numbers of one Mr. Chad Brown … he is just so tough to beat when it comes to 2nd off-the-bench, and 2nd Time Lasix. It doesn’t take a handicapping scientist to tell you that his colt by Into Mischief is going to take money, especially when you consider that Key Point’s #2 last race at Aqueduct was a near-miss … by a nose for owner Jeff Drown. Manny Franco gets the call on what should be an even-money-priced winner … and that is precisely why I want to take a shot against him. I am much more intrigued by the past form of Steve Asmussen’s A Longlongtimeago #1, Chris Englehart’s Colormepazzi #5, and John Terranova’s Montebello #7. Each of these entries could be close-to or are sure-to-be double-digit prices. They are not without merit, and I like them for different reasons. #3 Pave My Way switches back over to the turf for this race, which should help her chances after getting rained off of the surface last time out. #2 Sals Dream Girl was fourth at this level last time out, which was 175 days ago, and should show improvement today with Saez aboard.

#4 Fort Moultrie His turf form from last year was pretty good, as he turned in a couple good on the grass and only ran poorly when trying stakes company. He's probably going to get bet a bit, but I think the presence of the guy listed next might keep things just playable here.
#2 Kygo This spot is obviously a whole lot easier than most of what he has seen since arriving in the states, but I'm not sure he's a really clear cut above a couple others in here, and I wouldn't want to be here from way off the pace at too short of a price.
#7 Policy Option I'd want him on the deeper tickets off those Fair Grounds tries, as those turf conditioned claimers can have some okay horses in them, and he'll be a better fit while getting back in a claiming spot today.
Race Summary Fort Moultrie and Kygo seem likely to settle this, but the former may offer a slightly better price while getting a better trip closer to the front end early. Thinking he gets the jump and holds Kygo late.

Churchill Downs - Race #6
Picks Notes
#4 Full Charge Still like it when a barn grabs one and moves them into starter company like this, and a scan of the overall form here suggests he might be a pretty snug fit at this kind of level. Tactical player has plenty of appeal.
#7 Invisible War He ran a really good race with starter company at Fair Grounds, and I like that something similar to his recent efforts would leave him in a great spot while tracking the pace. Reliable and in the mix.
#3 Perfect Cut He looks well placed for the new team, and he's another who can land a good trip while tracking the pace. It wouldn't be a surprise to see him move up a bit here, and and he doesn't have much improving to do in order to land this.
Race Summary The form on Full Charge looks a lot better when you consider his clunkers this year came off the layoff and over synthetic footing, and his form gets really attractive when you give him a pass for those. I'd be thrilled at something like the 7/2 ML price.

Churchill Downs - Race #8
Picks Notes
#6 Dreamful On one hand, she might be a trap horse after settling for underneath slices in the last five starts, but in the end I think she's supposed to win this race from close range, as there aren't many other forward players to quicken the tempo too early.
#4 Hatari She's an appealing alternative to the top choice, and she'll offer a better number for sure. She has some pretty reliable finishing form on the grass and figures in the frame late for a piece.
#7 Youens She has been in really good form since getting back on the grass in February, and I like that she's not a desperately deep closer in a race that might not have a super quick pace. She's a threat into the far turn.
Race Summary Dreamful has good pace and an ability to stay, and she's just not meeting many others who want to force the issue early. Easy to see her blowing this open into the stretch after participating in a modest tempo. Thought we'd get much better last out from #1 Hat Tip, and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see her bounce back here. Think she's useful in the gimmicks at a big price.

This looks like a bit of a letdown spot for the Pirates after taking two out of three from the Los Angeles Dodgers last series. The Reds certainly have the advantage on the mound in this one as well, so they should not be the underdogs.
Connor Overton is 0-0 with a 2.53 ERA and 1.032 WHIP in two starts this season for the Reds. He'll be opposed by J.T. Brubaker, who is 0-2 with a 5.68 ERA and 1.421 WHIP in six starts this season. GREY STREAK - Sneaky speed on this one. He'll probably be stalking thoroughbreds on the back side, then bury them down the stretch. This colt has been posting some excellent workout times. Ran a quick time for the last quarter on March 2nd at Gulfstream Park. Anything close in this race should get the job done. That 104 fig this colt notched in his last event tells me he's a chief player today. FORT MOULTRIE - Last ran at Turfway Park and finished fifth. Reviewing his PP lines, I see he was close at the finish, within 5 of the winner.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 KYGO (GER) (ML=5/2), #3 BOHEMIAN BOY (ML=5/1), #7 POLICY OPTION (ML=8/1),

KYGO (GER) - Awfully hard to bet on this mount when he hasn't been showing any gumption lately. BOHEMIAN BOY - This runner hasn't been close at the wire recently. POLICY OPTION - This entrant likes to be on the board, but doesn't usually finish on top. Leave out of the top spot. The speed fig last time around the track doesn't fit very well in this clash when I look at the class rating of today's race. Mark this horse as a possibly overvalued contestant.
